WORKING WITH WHAT THEY HAVE

(Re: You Call That a Pesach Kitchen? Issue 342) Sandy Eller’s description of her Pesach kitchen/laundry room reminds me of my mother’s “Pesach kitchen.” My mother has an oven in her boiler room, a sink insert in the laundry room slop sink, and a table set up for use as a counter in the playroom. Her cabinets and pantry are an assortment of grocery boxes lining the playroom walls. Nevertheless, the most delicious foods come out of this creative kitchen that gets set up each year. Kudos to all those balabustas who work with what they have to turn out a beautiful yom tov! G.V.

(Re: The First Day in the Pesach Kitchen, Issue 342) In this article, Dini Freund mentions apple rings that seem like something I’d like to try. Would you be able to share the exact recipe? Thanks for a great magazine! S.M. DINI FREUND RESPONDS: The recipe calls for yellow apples, sliced into thin rings. They should be laid out on parchment-lined cookie sheets and baked at 200°. For dried apples, bake between 2 and 2.5 hours, and for apple crisps, bake for 3 hours. They may still look a drop wet at that point, but will usually dry out if left on the counter to cool. (If they’re still too wet, you can return them to the oven for another few minutes, until the desired results are reached.)

(Your Voice, Issue 342) Dear Principal, As someone who is also currently a principal and has taught for over a decade prior to that, I couldn’t agree more with every word of your letter. I think my experience proves how true your words are. Going back some years, I was newly married and teaching. I taught with utmost devotion. My principal was thrilled, my students were thriving, and the parents were appreciative. I sat and prepared for hours! (Even when it was well past my first year.) My husband was learning in kollel (and, baruch Hashem, still is!), and every month we anxiously awaited my paycheck. Yet the meager paycheck I received wasn’t enough to cover even half of my rent. Even with my husband’s kollel paycheck, we still weren’t able to make ends meet. We found ourselves borrowing money still in shanah rishonah. When I think back to that time, I have very mixed feelings. The financial stress we faced each month was not easy. And therefore I’m asking you: Should I encourage my daughter to teach? On one hand, I’m so thankful that I was part of a school system. Working in a school environment means working in a growing environment. The discussions among employees in an office and the discussions among teachers in the teacher’s room are not to be compared. I can confidently say I would not be the person I am today had I worked in an office. I truly wish the same experience for my daughter. On the other hand, I can’t help but wonder: Had I brought home a sufficient paycheck every month, would my husband have been able to learn back then with more yishuv hadaas? But then again: Perhaps the mesirus nefesh that I had back then is precisely the reason I am zoche today to have a husband who is still learning full time? (Debt-free, by the way.) Another Principal

room, kids room, bathroom, etc.) to Spanish. The Pesach Cleaning contest is interesting to read, and it’s definitely fun to imagine living in a huge house with so many rooms, but it isn’t so applicable to me. I was wondering if perhaps next year, your contest can be geared toward young working mothers with little kids at home who live in tiny apartments In it, I would love it if our schedule can be taken into account: We leave the house with our kids, and come home with them as well. Then there is supper time, bath time, etc. We don’t have so many hours in a row to be busy with cleaning straight through; the tasks need to be divided into bite-size jobs. (And if there are mothers who have the energy to clean for a few hours straight after the kids are all in bed, please share your trick!) There’s also the fact that there are little kids around all the time, and we need ideas of how to occupy them for long enough while we do our Pesach work. When discussing tiny apartments, take into account, as well, that the master bedroom may include things like under-thebed storage, a homemade builtin office/closet, a chest for kids’ clothing, and baby paraphernalia. Similarly, the dining room may include the toy and game area, books and albums, and a homework station. The linen closet may be the only non-bedroom closet besides the coat closet, and in addition to the linens and towels, can include everything that those with bigger homes keep in their laundry room (e.g., suitcase, extra tissue boxes, electronics, etc.) Thank you! A Young Working Mother

have cleaning help ask them to add on more hours, which directly affects others. Everybody knows that cleaning help is hard to come by, especially before Pesach. Asking your help to stay longer means that she will cancel her next job. I am a working mother with two little kids, and the only way I can keep my house under control is with help. Waiting for a cleaning lady to arrive and then getting a call that “the lady wants me to stay longer” ruins my day. It is not only unfair but also halachically wrong. It’s easy to just turn a blind eye and bury your head in the sand while making things work for you, but you are causing women much heartache and headache. We’re all in this together, and we all have Pesach arriving at the same time. Please help out your fellow Yiddishe mothers by appreciating the hours your cleaning help puts in and then letting her go to her next job with a clear conscience and the knowledge that you are helping preserve another woman’s sanity. I hope that my writing this letter will accomplish something and bring many more women peace of mind and a simchas yom tov. Name Withheld

PARSHAS METZORA Destructive Talk

After performing the transgression of lashon hora, the metzora was sent out of all three camps — a penalty harsher than that of any other impure person. The metzora’s purification process was lengthy and complicated. Why is the evil speaker dealt with so harshly? He did not even perform any serious act — all he did was let some words drop from his mouth. IT WAS THE DAY AFTER THE VORT. The news of the night before took the entire class by a storm. Leah was engaged! And it was a beautiful shidduch no less. The boy learned in a top yeshivah and had a great name. Her classmates were thrilled. But as it goes, everyone had an opinion to give. So it was that Chani and Nechama were sitting on a city bus, discussing the shidduch. “Who would have believed Leah would get such a top boy?” “Yeah, besides the fact that she’s a world-class neb, do you remember what she was like in her younger years?” The two went on and on, discussing all of Leah’s failures and her less-than-savvy history. “Poor, poor boy!” Chani exclaimed. Nechama nodded miserably. “Hmm. He’s in for a tough life with a wife like that.” Suddenly, the woman who was sitting in front of them turned around. “Thank you so much for sharing this information. I’ve been listening to every word, and I am so grateful I heard it.” The girls were shocked. Their mouths dropped open and they looked on, speechless. “You see, the chasan is my son. Now that I heard the truth about our kallah, I will have a talk with my son. Perhaps he’ll decide to drop the shidduch… Better to cut it off now than to

get into a sticky situation like that.” Suddenly, it hit the girls. With their careless talking, they had ruined their friend’s life. They had shamelessly disparaged a peer in a public space without thinking of the repercussions. Chani and Nechama felt terrible. It took a few moments for Nechama to find her mouth, but as soon as she did, she tried to cover up. “Really, don’t take our words to heart. We exaggerated quite a bit…” “Right,” Chani added. “Leah is really a great girl. She has so much to offer. She really, really grew since those early days of high school.” But the woman repeated adamantly, “I heard what I was supposed to hear. You can’t fudge the truth now. I’m going to talk with my son this afternoon!” Her expression was pained. Chani and Nechama were beside themselves. They both burst into tears and begged the woman to give it some more thought. “Ask other girls in our class. Find out the whole picture. We just got petty…” The woman let the girls bask in their remorse a bit longer and then she said, “Listen, girls. The truth is, I am not the mechutenista here. I have no idea who this kallah is or who the chasan is. I just wanted you to realize how destructive careless lashon hora can be.”

With their careless talking, they had ruined their friend’s life.

Chani and Nechama were beside themselves. They both burst into tears and begged the woman to give it some more thought. Indeed, life and death are in the hand of the tongue. The Chofetz Chaim writes that one who speaks lashon hora destroys worlds. Every comment he makes is liable to cause irreparable damage. How important it is to take a step back and evaluate — before uttering that statement — if it is worth paying its heavy price, both in this world and in the next. The Gemara in Arachin quotes Rav Yehoshua ben Levi, who asked what the metzora did that was so terrible that he needed to be expelled from all camps. He replied that the evil speaker made a divide between a man and his fellow brother, and as a result, he was condemned to sit separately from the rest of Klal Yisroel. From the extent of the purification process, we learn how lowly the act of speaking lashon hora is. The metzora needed to leave the camp and go through multiple steps in order to become pure, showing how meticulous the Torah is with every single word.

Did You Know? Of all human organs and limbs, the tongue moves the most quickly and most easily. The Chofetz Chaim points out that this is a chesed of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. The reward for every word of Torah is greater than all other mitzvos. Therefore, Hashem made it possible for man to speak thousands of words within minutes so he could gain the greatest possible reward.

Schumer Announces $2M Funding for Refuah Women’s Health Center Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer paid a visit to New Square last week, standing between two festive pillars of balloons to announce plans for a 10,000-square-foot women’s health center to be built at Refuah Health Center. The Journal News reported that Schumer stood with elected officials, including Congressman Mondaire Jones, State Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick, Rockland County Executive Ed Day and Ramapo Town Supervisor Michael Specht as he shared that the $2 million in federal funding to build the center had been included as part on an omnibus spending bill that was passed by the Senate in March. Schumer said that Refuah’s Center of Excellence for Women’s Health would be among the finest in New York State and that even as the leader of the Senate, he has continued advocating for those from his home state. “Having a majority leader from New York is not gornisht,” quipped Schumer. Jones praised Refuah for its excellent track record, noting, “We know that Refuah can deliver.”

Rockland Tops State in Recent Yeshiva Growth While yeshivah enrollment continues to skyrocket throughout New York’s Jewish communities, Rockland County led that list with a 25.1% jump over the last five years, according to New York State Education Department data released by Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council. A total of 12,563 new students enrolled in Rockland County yeshivos over the last ten years, with 6,518 signing up in the past five years. Rockland’s ten-year yeshivah growth rate is 63.2%, with Orange County, Queens and Brooklyn trailing behind with rates of 53.5%, 34.4% and 12.6% respectively. Currently there are 162,894 yeshivah students in New York State, with 32,345 living in Rockland County.

Judge Strikes Down State Redistricting Maps Controversial statewide redistricting maps released by the New York State legislature in Feb226

ruary have hit a snag after being ruled unconstitutional by a Supreme Court judge. NBC News reported that Judge Patrick F. McAllister of the heavily Republican Steuben County struck down the maps last week. McAllister said that the maps were deliberately drawn to give Democrats an advantage in upcoming elections, which is prohibited by a constitutional amendment passed in 2014. McAllister ordered the state legislature to draft new maps that would be reasonably acceptable to both Democrats and Republicans by April 11, with a neutral expert to be brought in at the state’s expense if they cannot be completed by the target date. McAllister noted that the state could move its scheduled June 28th primaries to as late as August 23 if the process of agreeing to new maps becomes protracted. State Democrats had been expecting a challenge to the redistricting and are appealing the decision. With the case involving a potential violation of New York State’s constitution, it could go directly to the Court of Appeals, whose members were all nominated by Governor Kathy Hochul and former governor Andrew Cuomo, both Democrats, reported Politico. “This is one step in the process,” said Senate Democratic spokesperson Mike Murphy. “We always knew this case would be decided by appellate courts. We are appealing this decision and expect this decision will be stayed.” But former U.S. Rep. John Faso, who was involved in Republican redistricting efforts, took a different view of the situation. “They very arrogantly ignored the will of the people and the constitutional prohibitions against gerrymandering,” said Faso, adding, “I think they shouldn’t arrogantly assume that the appellate courts are going to agree with them either.

As previously reported in The Monsey View, the new maps offered some benefits to the Monsey community, with the newly drawn 97th Assembly District consolidating much of the local Orthodox population into a single district. County Legislator Aron Wieder had considered running for the newly created seat but decided to bow out of the primary race last week.

Potentially Deadly Failure Prompts Smoke/ Carbon Monoxide Detector Recall Eight thousand Universal Security Instruments photoelectric detectors for both smoke and carbon monoxide are being recalled after reports of two units that failed to detect the presence of carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless and potentially fatal gas. The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a recall bulletin on March 31. It includes two models of Universal Security Instruments 2-in-1 sealed alarms — model MPC322S, which has ten-year sealed batteries and a manufacturing date of 2017JUN09, and model MPC1223, a hard-wired alarm with a ten-year sealed battery backup and a manufacturing date of 2017JUN02. The name “University Security Instruments, Inc.” or “USI Electric” is printed on the front of the detectors, with model and date code printed on the back of the alarm. According to the CPSC, the recall affects 8,000 alarms, which were sold on Walmart.com and other websites for between $50 and $80 from June 2017 to December 2019. No injuries occurred in either of the two reported incidents, but consumers are being asked to contact Universal Security Instruments for a free replacement alarm at 877-220-0046 or to click on the recall information at the company website, www.universalsecurity.com. Universal Security is advising consumers to continue using their recalled alarms until their replacements arrive. 228

CHAPTER 5 RECAP: Chaim Simcha compiles a list of the Rebbe’s children. The oldest surviving child, Mischa, was adopted by another family that later abandoned their Yiddishkeit. Some of Mischa’s descendants took their adoptive family’s last name, including Jacob Brock, a frail old man who knew the family history well. Chaim Simcha was planning to meet with Jacob to request his help in finding the manuscript’s heir, but Jacob passes away that very afternoon.

T

he levaya was an eclectic mix of cultures, with Jews of all walks of life mingling with a few frum relatives on one hand and several non-Jews on the other. Chaim Simcha was grateful that his family, despite how far many members had strayed, still managed to get along reasonably well. There were none of the “furious freiers,” as Izzy referred to some folks he’d met who hated the religion of their grandparents. Conversely, the religious Jews at the levaya showed nothing but love and respect for their less observant relatives. The eulogies were sincere and straightforward. One of Jacob’s daughters spoke about how he’d grown up, a child of the ‘60s in a lower-middle-class home. With the cards stacked against him, Jacob had worked his way up in a steel mill until he’d become the foreman, then manager. Everyone remembered his warm smile, and the way he’d related so well to everyone he knew. 236

A close friend, a sickly, thin fellow with wisps of white hair struggling to hold onto his scalp, talked about Jacob’s love of chess, the kindness he’d shown to everyone’s children, his fifteen years’ service on the school board. A member of the United Steelworkers union spoke of him as a “good provider” for his family. It was a term Chaim Simcha hated, though he was sure the man meant well. He just couldn’t stand the way it boiled a human being down to his money-making abilities, as if that was something to respect or resent in a person. Each of the speakers mentioned the time Jacob had turned a depressed and desperate man’s life around, talking him through a rough time and then giving him hope and a job when the world seemed stacked against him. Then they spoke of how that man repaid him by being such a wonderful son-in-law to Jacob’s daughter. Chaim Simcha sat through it all, listening and learning about a cousin he’d thought he’d

known. There was so much of this simple man’s life that was new to him, so much that he’d never thought to ask. Jacob had lived through history and he’d loved to talk about the past. But Chaim Simcha, like everyone else in the room, slowly realized that he hadn’t asked the right questions, or at least not enough of them. By the time the eulogies were over, Chaim Simcha found himself wishing he’d gotten to know his cousin better. But then, he thought, we never really know anyone completely, do we? Beginning with the recitation of some kapitlach of Tehillim, Chaim Simcha directed the remainder of the levaya. Then everyone got into their cars, followed the meis to the cemetery, and tramped through the snow to a spot that, save for the gaping hole in the ground, was indistinguishable from miles of snow-covered graves. Even the headstones were covered in snowdrifts, mounds of white jutting up from the ground but proclaiming nothing, their messages hidden under a sparkling brightness that reflected too much sun, but was still freezing cold and forbidding. A small crowd milled around uncertainly, stamping their feet to keep warm, their breath misting harshly in front of their faces. Jacob’s children stumbled through Kaddish, using a transliterated placard sent by Chesed Shel Emes, and then people took turns halfheartedly tossing dirt into the grave. Chaim Simcha could see the uncertainty on their faces. Should you work hard and efficiently, to do right by the niftar? Or maybe it was more respectful to work slowly, to show reluctance to let go? In that, they weren’t much different from the frum crowds, he realized. Nobody ever knew quite what to do with themselves at a time like this. Glasses on frozen faces fogged and dried and fogged again as the people formed awkward lines for the aveilim to walk between. Many of them had only the vaguest idea of what a Jewish funeral looked like, and they tried to hide their open curiosity as the Hebrew words they barely recognized rang through the frosty air. Afterward, everyone washed their hands in the freezing water at the entrance, then rushed to their cars

and turned the heat way up. Jacob Brock had sold his house to a son when he’d gone to live in the nursing home. The family met there after the levaya, Chaim Simcha trailing along after them. He found his cousins chatting pleasantly but soberly. They had loved Jacob, but this had come as a surprise to no one, Chaim Simcha himself being the only exception. Now they were simply doing their best to cope. He sat at the dining room table, present but a little apart, watching the room and trying to decide how long to stay in case they needed him. A tall woman passed by and paused, sipping tea and staring off into the distance. “He was a good man, my uncle,” she said rather suddenly. “Wha —? Oh, yes, I believe he was,” Chaim Simcha responded, shifting in his seat. “I only met him myself a few times, but he always seemed very special.” An idea struck him. “I was supposed to meet with him today, actually, to learn about Mischa’s family line. Mischa was Jacob’s father,” he added quickly. “I know who my grandfather was,” the woman said with a twinge of amusement. “And I know my cousins, too. What did you want to know?” Someone came into the room with the kosher cake platter Chaim Simcha had ordered. He snatched up a piece greedily. “Excuse me,” he said after a mezonos and a quick bite. “I haven’t eaten all day. I was curious which of Mischa’s children was born first.” “That would be Uncle Steven. He passed away ages ago.” “Any children?” Chaim Simcha asked. “Two sons and one daughter,” the woman responded. “She’s one of my best friends, actually.” “I see.” Chaim Simcha took another bite of cake. “Who’s the oldest of the three children?” “That would be Zach,” the woman said. “But if you wanted to speak with him, you missed your chance. He was at the funeral, but he left right away to go back to Morristown.” “I see. I do need to talk to him, actually. Is he a Brock? Or — Oh!” he stopped, recognition suddenly dawning. “You mean Zach Ganz, aren’t you? We’ve met once or twice.” “That’s the one,” she confirmed. “If you want his contact info, though, I can’t help... I’m not in touch with him.” “That’s all right, I think I have his number written down somewhere.” The woman considered. “He shouldn’t be too hard to find, in any case.” “Why’s that?” She gave him a surprised look. “He’s a big name over there, didn’t you know? Used to be the mayor…” TO BE CONTINUED...

Hold up a crystal to the light, and watch the colors dance along its surface. It’s easy to see how this interplay of light fascinated Daniel Swarovski as a young boy in Bohemia. Growing up in the late 1800s, Daniel spent much of his time in his father’s small crystal-processing factory, learning all about the industry.

DIAMONDS BY DESIGN When Daniel was 21 years of age, he attended the First Electrical Exhibition in Vienna. There he learned about new advances in modern machinery, including how to utilize electricity to perform tasks that until then could be done only by hand. The exhibitions sparked the grand idea in Daniel’s head to create a crystal-cutting machine that would take the place of inefficient tool grinders. It took him nine years to develop his machine. But when he finally achieved his goal, the machine was a wonder, with the ability to grind crystal to perfection. This machine worked faster than human grinders and achieved a much greater level of precision than anyone had ever dreamed. Daniel registered for a patent in 1892 and immediately began working on building a factory that would use his machine to produce precision-cut crystals. His dream was to provide “a diamond for everyone,” because his brilliantly cut crystals sparkled like diamonds, yet he hoped that the mass production would make the stones affordable for every budget. It took years to perfect the recipe for flawless crystal. His first step was opening a factory in Wattens in the Austrian Alps in 1895. There, Daniel Swarovski and his three 284

sons worked with different cuts and chemical mixtures to achieve the most brilliantly cut crystal stones. After all their experimentation, they finally reached their goal in 1913. Convinced that they could produce the most beautiful crystal in the world, the Swarovskis began mass production. They sold their crystals internationally under the Swarovski name, which soon became a household word. It marked the beginning of a time when crystal jewelry and accessories became the latest word in fashion. Swarovski crystals generated a lot of excitement in the post–World War I era. Demand for the company’s crystals constantly grew, and Swarovski’s popularity skyrocketed.

G L I N T I N G J E W E L R Y, GLITTERING HOMES Swarovski created many products from their unique crystals. Following styles and trends, Swarovski created fashionable cloth headbands adorned with crystals and provided fashion designers with an endless supply of crystals for adornment purposes. Of course, the crystals were also used for their original purpose: to create affordable jewelry that glimmered in

the light. Earrings, pendants, bracelets and necklaces were designed by Swarovski employees using both clear and colored stones. Swarovski soon expanded this collection to include watches, using Swiss mechanisms and plenty of crystal to create quality pieces. Still, it didn’t cost too much to own a Swarovski watch, because the raw materials weren’t that expensive. In home decor, Swarovski also manufactured a line of products that brought out the best in crystal. Chandeliers with thousands of hanging jewels showed off the beauty of the stones to the fullest, as did their smaller ornaments, like candlesticks made from crystal. Today, Swarovski owns some 2,800 stores worldwide, and they sell their products to an international market in 170 countries. The company employs approximately 27,000 people and grosses billions of dollars yearly.

CRYSTA L COLLECTIONS It took one little mouse to set off another frenzy of crystal excitement. In 1976, Swarovski produced a tiny crystal mouse as a collectible figurine. It was the first crystal collectible of its kind, and it quickly became a bestseller. Swarovski continued producing little figurines for their delighted fans until crystal lovers could display

S WA R OVS K I BY S I G H T Swarovski’s first logo was in the shape of an edelweiss, which is an alpine flower. It symbolized the crystals’ origin in the Alps, a place of beauty and purity. Later, the company adopted an SC symbol, which stood for Swarovski Crystals. Today, most people will recognize what’s been the distinctive Swarovski icon since 1988: a graceful swan.

a beautiful crystal collection. Their animal figurines soon included tiny crystal elephants, goldfish, tortoises and birds like the pink flamingo. Each little sculpture was created with signature Swarovski craftsmanship and quality. Swarovski makes a limited number of their figurines to increase their value. This creates a market for secondhand crystal collections as well, some of which can sell at high prices. Collecting crystal may sound like a rather strange thing to do, but when Swarovski created their Swarovski Collectors Society, 450,000 people joined. This means that nearly half a million people from all over the world became part of this group so that they could receive information on the latest in crystal. If you ever see little colored glass animals in someone’s display cabinet, you might be looking at an authentic Swarovski collection.

A WORLD OF CRYSTA L In 1995, Swarovski celebrated their centennial anniversary. To mark 100 years since the company was founded, Swarovski unveiled a grand new attraction: Crystal

A M U LT I - FAC E T E D BUSINESS Besides producing crystals for jewelry, accessories and chandeliers, Swarovski jumped into more markets. During World War I, grinding and cutting tools were hard to find, like so many other goods in that period of focus on military production. This lack of availability invited Daniel Swarovski to expand his business. Although Swarovski was focusing on crystal production and distribution at the time, the innovation behind the company was actually the grinding machine that cut the stones. Selling these cutting machines for others in similar industries, Swarovski decided, would help these manufacturers just as the machines had once helped Swarovski. Daniel developed new machines with his cutting-edge technology and marketed this new line of goods. It was the perfect move. The grinding and cutting machines were in high demand at the time, and soon this part of the business grew enough to deserve its own name. Swarovski called it Tyrolit. Until today, Swarovski sells machines under the Tyrolit name, a branch of the Swarovski group business. Swarovski soon found another market where their expertise could come into use. The chemical formulations they used to produce shimmering crystal could also create top-quality glass. In products like binoculars or telescopes, the clarity of the glass makes all the difference to the value of the device. Swarovski began producing a line of these precision tools in 1948, where their commitment to quality was soon recognized. They became a leading producer of these tools. When this branch of the business was large enough to be its own entity, it was named Swarovski Optik, which is what it is still called today. All three businesses remained part of the Swarovski Group, which was family-owned and familymanaged. In fact, the company is still family-owned, and many people who carry the name Swarovski work in the company even today.

A DA R K ER SIDE OF HISTORY While Swarovski has omitted all mention of this period from their website, members of the Swarovski family are known to have been active supporters of the Nazis during World War II, even going as far as organizing a pro-Nazi march. They used their connections in the Nazi Party to grow the business during the war, so that they were not affected by the general downturn in the economy after the fighting was over. The company’s current-day owners, of course, attempt to hide this history by omitting the war years from their company’s timeline. They say the reason is to keep the owners’ personal stories out of the public eye.

Worlds (known as Kristallwelten). Set up near their very first location in the Austrian Alps, it became a tourist attraction for anyone visiting Austria as well as a great Swarovski gift shop. The exhibit is set in picturesque gardens, with a backdrop of snowcapped mountains. At the entrance, the Giant, who is fabled to have set out to discover the world’s wonders, greets visitors with a waterfall cascading from his mouth into a pond. Behind this head are the 17 rooms that make up Crystal Worlds, each with its own exhibition. These displays keep changing, so there’s no knowing what a new visitor might discover. One of the most popular rooms to

visit is the Crystal Dome. Made of 595 mirrors, it reflects colors and light from all sides for a constantly changing display. Then there’s the Crystal Forest, which is a large, illuminated ball with 10,000 crystals and strands of light stretching across the room. A highlight of Crystal Worlds is the largest hand-cut crystal in the world, which is priceless. There’s also the Crystal Cloud, which floats above a mirror pool and features 800,000 handmounted crystals. The effect is magical, with the crystals reflected in the mirrors and creating a display of light and color. 290

It was Erev Pesach 1971, and Reb Moshe was in Eretz Yisroel with his wife. Four years had passed since he’d been there last, and he was eagerly awaiting the time he’d spend basking in the court of his Rebbe, the Birchas Avraham of Slonim. He’d last bade his Rebbe farewell as a chasan, when he’d traveled home from the Slonimer yeshivah in Yerushalayim and the Rebbe who was like a second father to him. He’d left then to get married in New York, where he now lived with his wife and eighteen-month-old son. Now that he had the privilege to spend Pesach in Eretz Yisroel, he so wanted to attend the Rebbe’s Seder. But it was not something he’d easily achieve. The Birchas Avraham’s Seder wasn’t anything remotely communal. He was known to conduct a private Seder, one no outsiders were privy to. But Reb Moshe’s wish was so dear that somehow, he managed to get permission from the Rebbe to participate. Humbled and elated, he readied himself for this rare opportunity. Reb Moshe’s wife, knowing what this meant to her husband, made arrangements to stay in Bnei Brak for the first days of Pesach, where she spent the first Seder night with her widowed great-aunt, one of the precious few survivors from her mother’s family. The second Seder, since it was only the Americans who were celebrating, was spent in Malon Viznitz with her sister-in-law’s parents. Perhaps not the most comfortable of arrangements for this young woman, but she was happy to do it since she knew how much this Seder night meant for her husband. He’d be sleeping in the Slonimer yeshivah, spending time in the hallowed atmosphere that had shaped so much of the Yid he was today. * * * * * Seder night came. The Yerushalayim night was crisp as Reb Moshe walked to the Rebbe’s house, his heart swelling with emotion. With deference, he took his seat at the Rebbe’s table. He took in the sight of the Rebbe leading the Seder, awed by the palpable kedusha. This is

what he’d come for. He hung on to every move and treasured every sound, trying to absorb the ethereal experience, alert and determined not to miss a single special minute. Kadesh, Urchatz, Karpas. Every Seder ritual took on a new and deeper dimension. Yachatz. Maggid. Reb Moshe took in the sounds of the beloved Slonimer nusach in which the Haggadah was intoned by the Rebbe himself. But not for long. * * * * * Reb Moshe blinked, trying to get his bearings. As the deep slumber released its hold on him and he took in his surroundings, he suddenly remembered: He was at the Rebbe’s house. He was spending the rare Seder night right at the very table of the Birchas Avraham. He strained his ears and tried to clear his mind. The Rebbe was bentching. Dread, and a sense of deep shame, began to creep up on him. How had he fallen asleep and missed the Seder night he had so long awaited? It had never happened to him before — to fall into a sleep so deep and tight during Seder night. To sleep right through a large chunk of the Seder. To miss the special moment of Shefoch Chamascha. He looked abashedly over at the Rebbe, stamping the sleep out of his bewildered eyes. But the Birchas Avraham continued the Seder, seemingly oblivious to the slumber that had deprived Reb Moshe of the exalted experience he’d so wanted to be part of. Soon thereafter, Reb Moshe confided in his friend, a Slonimer chassid who lived in Yerushalayim with his family. The surprise the other chassid exhibited was electrifying. He too, he shared, once received permission to attend the Birchas Avraham’s Seder. And, he too, he divulged to a disbelieving Reb Moshe, uncharacteristically slept right through the heilige moments of Shefoch Chamascha. They met each others’ eyes, and understanding dawned. The Rebbe had allowed them to attend the Seder. But some things were not for anyone’s eyes but the Rebbe’s. April 6, 2022

APPLIANCES I confess. Cleaning and scrubbing the gas range, fridge and freezer is not something I dream about with a wistful smile on my face. However, if you get a chance to dream about anything this week, then you’re quite the lucky one. So dream on about your gas range, and it’ll practically clean itself. Wait. Practically? Being practical sounds way too confusing. Let’s just have fun and skip the practicalities. 1. OVEN Before you move your oven, line up your kids in the kitchen. As you pick your way through all of the unidentifiable items that have fallen behind and under the oven over the span of the past 365 days, hand them out to whichever child it belongs to. The lonely fork belongs to you. There are four options when cleaning your oven: Option 1: Your cleaning lady. Leave her in the kitchen and go. Run fast. Out of the house. Option 2: Your husband. Leave him in the kitchen and go. Run fast. Out, out, out. If the first two options won’t work, then I’m so sorry. The other two options are basically: You and You. Self-cleaning the oven is the quickest way to do the

oven, of course. However, it’s not the best option. The fuse sometimes blows as the heat is way higher than the normal 350–550° cooking range. You can use St. Moritz or Easy-Off, but I am not a big fan of this method either. The chemicals are very strong. So… we get back to our trusty baking soda and vinegar, which will do the best job once again. Make a paste with baking soda. Spread it on the inside of the oven and let sit overnight, about 10 to 12 hours. Take a wet rag and wipe away as much as you can. The baking soda will have turned brown at this point, so you will need to use a few shmattes. Use a spray bottle with vinegar and shpritz away any residue. 2. STOVETOP Remove the grates and put them into the sink with hot, soapy water. Scrub the ones that need scrubbing. If you need anything stronger than soap, soaking it in vinegar for a few hours will do the trick. Rubbing alcohol works wonders for the stovetop, but it is flammable, so extra caution is needed. Soft Scrub works well too. I don’t use my oven and range for a full day after I clean it.

A reminder to ask your rav about using vinegar and alcohol or anything that seems questionable to you — or to any letterwriters, for that matter.

used inside the fridge.

3. FRIDGE AND FREEZER Empty the fridge. Sort the food. Toss anything that’s past its prime stage of life. Sauces that do not contain chometz are generally okay to keep (obviously keep your specific minhagim in mind regarding any Pesach work). Just make sure they are not there since last Pesach. Just saying. Remove drawers and shelves and place them in the sink. Scrub the drawers with a sponge and dish soap. Air dry. Move and unplug your refrigerator. Scrub the floor around and where the fridge stood. Spray the interior with a multipurpose spray. Wipe down. Use an old toothbrush to wipe the seams. Careful with the rubber seals. They can tear. Plug in the fridge, and replace drawers and shelves. Wipe down bottles and jars before putting them back in. For a stainless steel exterior, try Magic Stainless Steel Cleaner Aerosol. Amazing! White vinegar works like a charm as well. Otherwise, use the multipurpose spray you

Repeat steps with your freezer. If you have a thick layer of ice on your freezer walls, the temperature is set too high. The ice takes about ten hours to defrost, so you may choose to manually chip away at the ice with rubbing alcohol and a knife. 4. TABLE AND CHAIRS Wash down the table and chairs. To avoid serving food every few minutes, leave the chairs on the table for as long as you can. When I say as long as you can, I mean about a week. (This can backfire if the kids keep running to the neighbors to beg for snacks and it’s not worth the humiliation, but hey, to each their own.) 5. FLOOR No mops when it comes to preparing your kitchen for Pesach. Get down on your hands and knees, and deal with each square inch. Give the corners extra attention, as well as the grout.

BATHROOMS I’m keeping this short and sweet. Literally. I don’t know how big your bathroom is and how much closet/shelf space you have or how many bathrooms you have in your home, but there’s one thing I do know: Come morning, the kids will be banging on the door for someone to come out. So I keep the bare minimum of stuff in there in order to keep the people in there for the barest minimum of time. I know, I know. I’m a genius. Pine-Sol Original should be your go-to multipurpose cleanser for the bathroom. It leaves mirrors streak-free

and removes scum from shower tiles. I use paper towels in the bathroom to wipe everything down. They absorb the dust and germs much better, and when done you can just discard them. Use your handheld vacuum for the floors. Most of them are excellent for bare floors and getting into corners. Last time I asked my dentist, he did indeed confirm that each child needs only one toothbrush at a time. So all the extra ones can go bye-bye. Save two for cleaning. Bandages are a treat in my home. No, I can’t substitute a bandage for a lollipop (trust me, I’ve tried), but the little ones are so happy when I treat their imaginary boo-boos with a bandage. I keep them in a Ziploc bag, divided by size. Hairbrushes: Do you really need 23 of them? Remove hair with a pencil and then shampoo brushes. Ideally, do this every two weeks or so. Cotton balls and Q-tips should be stored in a closed container since dust settles on them. Everything else, wipe down with a damp cloth. Discard outdated creams and soaps.

Catch you next week!

Pristine, white, starched. The beautiful white kittel makes it into our children’s vocabulary as Seder Night approaches. Sure enough, in many Yiddishe homes worldwide, the kittel is donned soon after the men come home from shul, so that the little children can remain awake… But what is the real purpose of the kittel on this auspicious night? What is the significance of the kittel and the fabric it is made of?

Kittel at the Seder

Shaatnez and Pesach In Sefer Bereishis, the Torah mentions the river Pishon as one of four rivers leading from Gan Eden. Rashi identifies this as the Nile River on account of the pishtan, or flax, that grew in abundance along its shores. In fact, Mitzrayim was synonymous with flax — the source of linen. Wool represents the sheep of the Korban Pesach. The mixture of wool and linen is forbidden, symbolically ensuring that Klal Yisroel and Mitzrayim remain forever separated.

318

The Monsey View

There are two reasons given by the poskim as to why we wear the white kittel to the Pesach Seder. First, it is a symbol of cheirus — freedom. Additionally, it serves as a reminder for us not to get carried away with the simcha and royalty of this night, but rather to keep our hearts and minds subservient to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Reb Pinchos of Koritz offers another explanation. Klal Yisroel was redeemed from Mitzrayim in the merit of sticking to their Jewish names, language and attire. The kittel is a garment worn only by Yidden. Wearing it to the Seder reminds us of this distinction in whose merit we were freed. Others mention that the kittel is worn because it is certainly chometz-free — after all, the last time it was worn was on Yom Kippur, a fast day.

By: T. Gestetner

Kayin, Hevel and Shaatnez Chazal say that the day that Kayin and Hevel brought their korbanos was the 14th of Nissan. Adam encouraged his sons to do so, telling them that this was a date destined for Klal Yisroel to offer a korban in the future. Hevel brought a wooly lamb, symbolizing good intentions, and Kayin brought flaxseeds — the cheapest of his produce and a sign of ill intent. The Midrash states that Hashem declared that it is not fitting to fuse a sincere korban with the korban of a sinner. Ever since, we do not combine wool and linen in a garment. Interestingly, the kohanim did wear shaatnez in the Beis Hamikdash. The purpose of the avodah was to help Klal Yisroel do teshuvah and turn their sins into mitzvos. Thus, the kohanim have the potential to change a sin like Kayin’s into a mitzvah like Hevel’s — permitting them to wear wool and linen together.

Underneath the Fabric Did you know that linen is a vegetable? Linen fibers are spun from the stems of the flax plant. (Cotton is a natural fiber as well, derived from the balls that grow around cotton seeds.) Linen has long since been considered a luxurious fabric. Cultivating flax is expensive, it is difficult to spin, and many resources are involved in its production process. Linen has been an essential fabric since ancient times. Ecru — a yellow-gray color that is a pale version of beige — is the color of unbleached linen. Natural linen can also come in varying shades of ivory, tan and gray. Although many associate linen with summer because it keeps you cool, it is also very comfortable in the winter as it is a natural temperature-regulating fabric. Pure linen shrinks by approximately 4% after its first wash. Most companies prewash the fabric before sewing it into garments. In Europe, linen was commonly used for sleepwear, bedsheets, napkins, tablecloths and other household fabrics. Thus the term “linens” came to refer to such household items, regardless of the actual fabric used.

Pros and Cons Linen keeps you cool. It is easy to clean. Linen is breathable, giving it a pleasant, fresh feel. Linen can be expensive. The fabric wrinkles easily.

13 PCS ACCOUNTING STUDENTS SELECTED AS FINALISTS FOR NJCPA SCHOLARSHIP AWARD! Every year, the NJCPA Scholarship Fund, attracts the best and brightest New Jersey students into the accounting profession by providing tuition scholarships of $6,500 dollars to each eligible student. Scholarship recipients are bright, motivated, and passionate about their chosen profession of accounting. Awards are based on academic performance, essay, and personal interview. “We are very pleased that thirteen of our FDU-PCS accounting students were selected by the NJCPA as finalists to be interviewed for the NJCPA scholarship. This is a very large number of finalists for any one school in NJ and is a reflection on our continuing excellent accounting program and the many hardworking dedicated students,” says Ron West, chair of the Accounting, Law, and Taxation Department at FDU and director of the MS in Taxation Program. With a 96 percent placement rate, this program was ranked by Eduniversal in 2021 as a Best Master’s in accounting programs. The next cohort of the acclaimed PCS/ FDU Masters in Accounting will be starting in the spring (after Pesach).
