(Re: Cultivating Connection, Issue 339) Kudos to Gelly Asovski for hitting the mark yet again. It is so important for kids to learn the value of money — especially since we live in a world with such a materialistic and disposable mentality. I want to point out that it’s not only money our kids don’t value, but also what they get with the money. The result is that there is a lack of caring if something gets broken or lost. Therefore, I want to share an effective way of gift-giving that helps kids learn the value of items. Whenever an occasion arises for a gift, my kids receive what we have already chosen, bought and stored away months in advance. We buy Chanukah gifts Sukkos time and birthday gifts a month or two beforehand. When they actually get that coveted gift that they’ve been dreaming about for so long, they value it much more than someone who gets a gift straight out of the shopping bag. My kids get plenty, but more importantly, they care about everything they have, because they get the gift of gift processing along with their actual gifts. C. W.

But for those who are looking to fulfill the mitzvah of getting rid of chometz in honor of Pesach — it probably won’t take four days to clean a bedroom! A kosheren Pesach! Staying Focused

YOUR VOICE IN HIS HANDS
I’ve had the same cleaning lady for over a year now. She shows up religiously each week to clean my house, and baruch Hashem, does her work well. At one point in the summer she went up a dollar per hour, which I honored. Last week, she brought me a note in English that someone had written for her, which stated that her rate will go up another $2 per hour, in addition to transportation expenses, and that she needs an answer that week due to her increase in rent. It’s Erev Pesach, and I became frantic! I really need the help and can’t afford to lose it, but is it responsible for me to give in to this rate, which will directly affect my friends, neighbors and family members, whose cleaning help costs will also go up as an effect? I told Hashem: “Ribbono Shel Olam, You are in charge of my cleaning help. I am a mother of seven little children. I have parents to take care of, and I am not dependent on my cleaning lady. Only on You.” With all the other families in mind — those barely managing to cover their monthly expenses who will not be able to swing a rise in cleaning costs — I wrote back to my cleaning lady that I will continue to fill her hours, be nice to her, and give her food and drink like a mentch, but I will not go above the going price. The next week she came back, happily, without a word. She had tried her luck, and I had tried mine. And guess what, after having been looking for cleaning help for Thursdays for the past while, I got an offer for a cleaning lady that very week. Not only does she charge a dollar less than most cleaning ladies, but she cleans really well! Yiddishe mothers, let’s stay strong and focused. This is teyere Yiddish gelt. Be nice and considerate, but stay strong, so we can all help each other get help. A Considered Housewife

PURIM Reverberations of Joy
The day of Purim is crowned with joy. At the same time, it is a day of “kol haposhet yad nosnim lo.” The gates of Heaven are unlocked — no one is turned down. What is the connection between the joy of Purim and the salvation that this day brings? THE ATMOSPHERE WAS FESTIVE. The townspeople sat around the table of Reb Elazar Rokeach, author of the Ma’aseh Rokeach, in Amsterdam, Holland. It was Purim, and they had gathered to hear the wisdom and wit of their beloved Rav. There was plenty of food and drink, and an abundance of wine. It was a place of true simchas Purim. A loud knock on the door interrupted the festivities. In walked three messengers of the Dutch queen, in their official garb. You could tell from their faces that they were on an urgent mission. Reb Elazar was the beloved head of the Jewish community, and he was revered by the Dutch as well. The messengers had come to discuss a critical matter, knowing that Reb Elazar was the right address. “The dam broke!” they blurted out. “It is a matter of time before the entire area — including all the houses and towns — will be under water!” The messengers begged the Rav to pray for the problem to be resolved before a full-blown catastrophe evolved. They expected the Rav to leave the banquet table immediately and move over to his room to pray. To their surprise, the Rav remained seated and called out, “Bring in some more wine. Let’s perform the mitzvah of ‘ad d’lo yada’ on a greater level.” The royal messengers were aghast. This was an outright offense to the royal kingdom! How could the Rav ignore the queen’s request for help? In time, the crowd grew livelier. They sang joyously and burst into spontaneous

dance. The Rav, too, took part in the joy. The messengers rushed back to the palace to repeat what they had witnessed, but before they could get the words out, they were told that the danger had passed. Amazingly, the matter of the broken dam was resolved in record time. “Surely, your mission was met with success,” the queen stated. The messengers were confused. With their own eyes, they had watched the Jewish community disregard their urgent request for prayer, choosing to party joyously instead. Yet it could not be denied that salvation had come specifically within that time frame. They shared the events with the queen, who was now bewildered herself. Soon Reb Elazar was summoned to the palace. The queen wished to present him with a certificate of acknowledgement for his efforts — and to hear more about his strange behavior. “Please explain this to me,” the queen begged. With a wide smile, the Rav replied, “You see, we Jews know that at times of danger, we can awaken Heavenly mercy by accomplishing His will. Your messengers arrived to me on the day of Purim, a day on which the primary mitzvah is to be joyous. “When I heard about the calamity, I immediately instructed the crowd to intensify the level of joy — to drink more, to dance and sing — for the joy itself would bring the awaited salvation.” And the queen of the Netherlands was
privy to one of the secrets of the Jewish People... * * * * *
Simcha is our secret key. It is a quality that enables us to connect with Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Through simcha we express our boundless love and gratitude for being children of the King. When our joy finds expression, we reach the epitome of connection with Hashem, thus opening the fountain of brachos and yeshuos. The Tiferes Shlomo of Radomsk explained this concept with a question on the Megillah. When Esther heard that Mordechai was sitting in the courtyard in sackcloth, she sent him royal garments. What was Esther thinking? Obviously something had happened if Mordechai had donned a sackcloth. He could have changed into other clothes if he so desired. Why did she send him the garments? Esther understood that some tzarah was prompting Mordechai to be in mourning mode. She sent him the clothes to imply that through the avodah of simcha, one could effect yeshuos more quickly than through grief and sorrow. Esther wanted Mordechai to change into royal garments that would gladden his heart and enable the wheels of salvation to turn into motion. Mordechai refused, but ultimately Hashem made it clear that Esther’s approach was correct. Indeed, Klal Yisroel’s salvation began only once the mindset shifted from grief to joy — once Mordechai dressed in royal garments and rode around town on the king’s horse. The day of Purim reveals our secret key. Our troubles can be resolved if we step up our level of simcha. On Purim itself, the gates of Heaven are open, because the streets below are filled with genuine, boundless joy.

Miracle in Kharkiv as Jewish Residents Evacuate Hours Before Bombing Eighteen Jewish residents of the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv are grateful to be alive after what seemed like an error actually saved their lives. Yeshiva World News reported that Chabad shluchim made arrangements for two groups to leave Kharkiv, with one departing on March 7 and the other on March 8. Due to a mix-up, the second group, all of whom lived in the same building, accidentally left a day early in place of the first group. Once the mistake was detected, the decision was made to let the group who had left continue. Hours later, their building was completely destroyed by Russian bombs. The second group managed to leave the city safely the next day. Kharkiv has been hit hard by Russian artillery. According to Hamodia, a bomb hit a shopping mall located near the city’s Great Synagogue last Thursday, shattering the shul’s windows. More than 100 Jewish residents of Kharkiv were taking shelter in the shul when the bomb exploded. “We worry for the lives of the Jews who moved to the basement of the synagogue, most of whom are elderly and cannot leave,” said Rabbi Moshe Moskovitz, chief rabbi of Kharkiv. Rabbi Moskovitz said that the situation in Kharkiv is difficult, with supplies of food and medicines running low and dangerous roads making replenishment risky. As of last week, 30,000 Jews had been safely evacuated from Kharkiv, Kyiv and other eastern and northern Ukrainian cities.
Disappointment as NYS Proposes New Substantial Equivalency Regulations for Yeshivos The battle for control of yeshivah education in New York continues, with the New York State Education Department proposing updated regulations last week that would have outsiders dictating how secular studies are taught. New York State has long required yeshivos to provide students with an education that is “substantially equivalent” to that being offered in public schools, but the definition of substantial equivalency has come into question in recent years. An earlier attempt to dictate the number of hours that particular subjects would be taught in private schools was met with significant opposition from yeshivos, private and parochial schools, prompting the state to step back and revise their proposed guidelines. But according to Hamodia, the latest regulations are still 124

troubling. Private schools, which includes yeshivos, can only avoid being subject to oversight by a local school authority if they are registered as having a regents program or are accredited by a government-approved agency. The regents exemption only applies to high schools that offer regents exams and to elementary schools that are part of those high schools. At this time, there are no state-approved accrediting agencies that have any prior experience with yeshivah curriculums. The board of regents is scheduled to vote on the proposed regulations after a 60-day public comment period. The state was flooded with 140,000 comments from the public after releasing its last set of guidelines, with most opposing the proposed rules. Yeshivah advocacy group PEARLS called the regulations “disappointing” in a statement released last week, which read, “Government does not possess either the expertise or the ability to evaluate our limudei kodesh classes or those who teach them, yet these regulations require local school districts to do just that. SED [the State Education Department] heralds the possibility of third-party accreditation, but our repeated request that SED approve an accrediting agency that is familiar and experienced with yeshivah education was ignored.” Attorney Avi Schick, who has previously represented yeshivos in legal battles, noted that the regulations might be helpful to certain schools that offer regents exams, but does little for the vast majority of elementary schools. He noted that having local school districts assess the quality of a yeshivah education could be a potential violation of the First Amendment, since it would have government employees deciding on the validity of religious studies and those who teach them. Schick also said that having a state-approved accrediting agency evaluate yeshiva curriculums was equally problematic. “Unfortunately, there are currently no SED-approved agencies that have experience in accrediting yeshivos or in assessing the educational value of Jewish religious studies,” said Schick. “For these regulations to maintain even the semblance of equity and fairness, SED must broaden the accreditation option to encompass yeshivos.” The public comment period on the regulations begins on March 30 and runs through May 30. Comments can be sent via email to seregcomments@nysed.gov or mailed to 89 Washington Ave., EBA Room 1078, State Office of Religious and Independent Schools, SE Regulation Comments, Albany, NY 12234.
Hero Firefighter Saves Two-YearOld in Spring Valley Blaze A Spring Valley firefighter got what he called the best gift possible for his birthday — the opportunity to save a life. Evan Humphrey was one of several dozen firefighters who responded to the March 9th fire that had multiple people
trapped on the seventh floor of the Country Village Towers, located on Kennedy Drive. The Journal News reported that Humphrey carried a two-yearold toddler down seven flights of stairs to safety, thinking about his nieces and nephews during the rescue that took place on his 42nd birthday. “I couldn’t ask for a better present than to save a life,” said Humphrey, who is also the Wesley Hills fire inspector. “Saving a child is special.” The toddler and three adults were all transported to an area hospital for smoke inhalation as a precautionary measure. Dozens of people were evacuated from the building, with Chaverim transporting them to Spring Valley High School, where the American Red Cross had tables ready to help displaced residents, finding them places to stay and offering supplies. The fire was believed to have started at 1 p.m. on the seventh floor. It soon filled the building with thick black smoke that made it nearly impossible to see. It took 38 minutes for volunteers from the Spring Valley, Nanuet, Pearl River and Hillcrest fire departments to get the flames under control. The cause of the fire, which displaced fourteen families, remains unknown.
DMV Rolls Out New License Design With Enhanced Security Features Hoping to stay ahead of fraudsters, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has upgraded to a new design for all of its drivers’ licenses, non-driver identification cards and permits. Wash & Sets Welcome
In a statement issued on March 10, the DMV said that, effective immediately, the updated design would be used for all documents issued to new applicants, as well as those who are renewing or replacing their identification cards. Some of the new features include embossed text and images and redesigned clear panels that display a photo of the motorist when held at one angle, and their image and birth date when held at a different angle. The last time the DMV redesigned its licenses was in 2013. “At the DMV, we pride ourselves on providing secure identity documents to millions of New Yorkers, and we introduce enhanced features every few years to stay at the cutting edge of emerging trends,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “We are confident in the security features on our current ID documents. However, the new security features on our redesigned documents will keep us one step ahead of potential counterfeiters.”

CHAPTER 2 RECAP: Rabbi Chaim Simcha Ginzburg is the great-grandson of the last Rebbe of Lodz, Reb Menashe Sholom Ginzburg. Reb Menashe perished in the Holocaust, as did most of his children and chassidim. Rav Moshe is trying to rebuild the chassidus together with his brother, Yisrael Uriah, who goes by the name of Izzy. It’s a long road to build a thriving chassidus from fifteen families davening together on Shabbos, but they’re off to a good start. As Rav Chaim Simcha works on his pirush of the Rebbe’s commentary to Koheles, a package arrives — from Lodz.

ach Ganz sat back in his chair and considered. “That’s an interesting question, Rick,” he said, projecting his voice so the digital recorder heard his words cleanly. “I think Mayor Finchley may have overstepped on this one, to be honest. When I was mayor, one thing we always kept in mind was that we’re a swing county in a strong Democrat state. You’ve got to keep the balance between state politics and local sensibilities, or you’re bound to offend somebody. Go too progressive and you might find yourself out of a job come next election.” Rick Moncharch gave Zach a mischievous smile. “That’s what happened to you, right? Kicked out of the office because you weren’t conservative enough?” Zach laughed, making sure the photographers caught how comfortable he was with the joke. “I stepped down from the last race, Rick,

you know that. I’m still the undefeated champion around here — never lost a race once! I felt I could do more good elsewhere now.” “Right. So what’s your next move? Rumor has it that you’re planning to run for a seat in the House, and — ” “I’m not ready to discuss my current plans just yet. When I do, you’ll be the first to know. Let’s talk about the political climate surrounding Melissa Graham. That’s really why you brought me here, isn’t it?” Rick nodded. “All right. Do you think she’s telling the truth? And if so, what does it mean for the future of public school education in this county?” Zach assumed his best thoughtful-commentator face. “Well, she’s definitely right about some things, I can tell you that. When I was mayor, well, we saw some things you wouldn’t even believe. We shut down Peabody High, if you’ll recall, for very similar reasons. Look, we
all know bullying shouldn’t ever happen. The question’s not, ‘Is this happening?’ It’s, ‘What are school administrators doing to stop it?’ And I think Ms. Graham is right that we need to do more.” This interview was a good booking, Zach reflected. Rick Moncharch always treated him with respect, boosting the impression that Zach knew his stuff.
“I STEPPED DOWN FROM THE LAST RACE, RICK, YOU KNOW THAT. I’M STILL THE UNDEFEATED CHAMPION AROUND HERE — NEVER LOST A RACE ONCE! When this article would appear in a few days, it would solidify his reputation as a thoughtful commentator as well as one of the “good guys” in politics. That kind of coverage would be important when he finally did announce his run for the House, probably in a few months. They chatted a little more before Rick asked Zach for his thoughts on a recent announcement by a police officer that his station was underfunded and underequipped. “Do you think that’s true?” Rick wanted to know. This was a touchy one, of course. Most people supported law enforcement, but others saw the cops as a bunch of power-mad dictators. It was a fine balancing act saying something that let everything think you were on their side. “It’s an open secret that law enforcement is underfunded,” Zach answered after a pause. “And I do think we need to devote more resources to police departments everywhere. Particularly in diversity and sensitivity training. I remember a time when kids looked up to cops, and I think we can get there again. But we don’t give officers the resources they need to do their jobs, much less to learn how to do them better, and so we often fail them long before they fail us.” That wasn’t his best effort, Zach de-
cided. He’d managed this question with a lot more finesse a few weeks ago. Oh, well. He could always issue a clarification tomorrow, depending on how people reacted. Rick thanked him for his time, they shook hands and said the usual things, and then Zach was off to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at a nursing home. He had a staff meeting planned after that, a short speech around dinnertime (some fat cat donor was having a birthday), and then a quiet evening at home. All in all, it was going to be a busy day. * * * * *
“Izzy? It’s Chaim.” There was a brief pause, and Chaim Simcha could hear his brother smile. “Really? That must be why it said your name on the screen!” He chuckled. “Listen, while I have you, about the 501(c)(3). It’s going to take time before we get tax-deductible status, like three to six months. Just thought you should know.” Chaim Simcha switched the phone to speaker, tossed it onto the passenger seat, and started his car. The vehicle seemed to shiver in the cold as it revved reluctantly to life. “Okay, thanks. Listen, I just got a letter all the way from Lodz! Apparently, the city found some papers from the Zeide Reb Menashe. It sounds like it may be one of his lost seforim!” “What? That’s amazing! Are you sure?” Chaim Simcha pulled onto the street heading north, driving slowly through the heavy snow and ice. “There was a photo of some pages. I couldn’t make out the words, but it’s definitely his handwriting.” “Fantastic news! Are they going to ship it to us, or —” Cars zipped by in the fast lane, and Chaim Simcha’s old clunker of a car trembled. He shook his head in distaste; not safe to go that fast in this weather. “Well, that’s the problem, Izzy,” he explained, trying to keep an eye on every car nearby. “They aren’t offering to give it to us. They’re asking us to help them find who it belongs to.” “What’s that? You’re breaking up.” Chaim Simcha sighed. His shul office was full of Italian leather and rich
mahogany. Was a simple Bluetooth hookup for his car too much to ask? He wasn’t a fan of luxury living, but he did wish for a few of the more useful indulgences. He grabbed the phone and held it next to the steering wheel so Izzy could hear. “I said they’re not giving it to us! The papers included a note, in the Rebbe’s handwriting, saying that he left it to his oldest living descendant. They want us to help them figure out who that is so the rightful heir can claim it.” The light turned red, Chaim Simcha hit the breaks, and the car began to skid. For a moment, his heart leapt into his throat. Then the anti-lock brakes took over, the car slowed to a halt, and he sat there, breathing heavily. He mouthed a silent thank You to Hashem and realized that he’d dropped his phone in the panic. “Chaim? You there?” “Sorry,” Chaim Simcha shouted. He shifted into park and fished around on the floor until he found the phone. “What were you saying?” “I said it’s gonna be someone from Mischa’s side of the family. Do we know who’s the oldest?” Green light again. Chaim Simcha started driving. “Not yet. But I’m in touch with most of them. We’ll figure it out. Maybe the heir will donate the manuscript to the shul, or at least let us publish it.” He turned left into the cheder parking lot. “I’m picking up Yossele now. Gotta run.” He hung up the phone, turned the car off, and got out, bracing himself against the cold. Yossele must have seen him pull in, because the boy was already running out of the cheder building. Soon the seven-year-old raced up and hugged Chaim Simcha’s leg happily. “Good afternoon, Yossele!” Chaim Simcha said. “How was your day?” He hoisted his son into the car seat and buckled him in. “Mordechai climbed on his desk, and the rebbi made him sit down!” Yossele reported with excitement. “He wanted to jump off it like a bird!” “Ah.” Chaim Simcha put the key back in the ignition and turned. The engine whined in protest, but refused to turn over. “And at recess, we were folding papers into shapes. Gavriel made a horse!” March 16, 2022

“A horse, huh?” Chaim Simcha gritted his teeth and tried again. Once more, the engine wheezed and complained. He pumped the gas, but nothing doing. “I made a house. It had windows and a doorway and a grass in the front, but not in the back because there wasn’t enough paper…” “Ribbono Shel Olam, please let my car keep working,” Chaim Simcha muttered fervently.
CHAIM SIMCHA SIGHED. HIS SHUL OFFICE WAS FULL OF ITALIAN LEATHER AND RICH MAHOGANY. WAS A SIMPLE BLUETOOTH HOOKUP FOR HIS CAR TOO MUCH TO ASK? With an angry cough, the engine turned over, revved once, and the car was ready to roll. “Thank You!” he added. “Tatty! Are you listening to me?!” Chaim Simcha turned around. “What was that, motek? I was a little distracted.” Yossele slapped his forehead. “Uch, Taaaa-tty! Now I have to start all over!” “That’s okay, never mind,” Chaim Simcha said quickly. “Really…” * * * * *
Zach Ganz sat at his kitchen table and plucked idly at his guitar. It had been too long since he ran through a complex piece of music. It was a sad truth about politics that anything that wasn’t a part of your election strategy often ended up second fiddle, no pun intended. Zach wasn’t even running for anything. Not officially anyway; not yet. But he never seemed to find the time to play anything, which was a shame because he really needed it. 134

Today he was surprisingly exhausted, but it wasn’t even that late, so it was a perfect chance to play a little music. At one time, Zach actually thought of becoming a professional musician. Cooler heads had prevailed, though. His father reminded him that musicians never made any real money, and so Zach had gone to college and become a business major instead. With a natural talent for leadership, and a face the cameras seemed to love, it wasn’t long before he’d transitioned to politics. He’d been lucky to find a mentor in former Governor Henry Slidell, whom Zach quietly worshipped. The two had worked together for years before Slidell retired. Zach ran for his first term as mayor shortly thereafter, with Henry helping run the campaign behind the scenes, even delivering a speech or two on Zach’s behalf. One of Zach’s greatest disappointments was that the old man didn’t live to see him take office. Henry passed away just before Zach won, depriving Zach of the chance to make his teacher proud. Nothing to do about it. Henry was wherever it was that politicians went when they died. The great debating-floor in the sky or whatever. Zach wasn’t unhappy with his life choices. Sure, his true passion was music, but he’d never have ended up in this 3,000-square-foot colonial mansion on a musician’s salary. As a politician, he had friends, influence, money. It was a good life. Still, every once in a while, Zach wondered what it would have been like playing music for a living. He’d have been poorer, certainly. But would he have been happier? He was startled out of his reverie by the doorbell. He slipped his guitar back into its case, checked the security camera, then hurried to open the front door. “Brian! Geordie! What can I do for you two?” Brian Cranston gave Zach a tight smile as they shook hands. “Can we come in, Zachary? We need to talk…” TO BE CONTINUED...

MARVELOUS MEAT BOARDS B Y: R I V K Y F R I E D M A N
If you’re looking for something special to serve this Purim, charcuterie boards have become so popular for a reason. I love the fact that the host gets to sit and enjoy the meal together with the guests, and that there’s something on the board to please everyone’s palate. The best part is that the prep is fuss-free and stress-free, and the results are always showstoppingly amazing. When it comes to placing your food on the board, the rule is that there are no rules. Put your condiments and dressings in little jars and bowls, and then continue building around them as you place the rest of the components.

BURGER BOARD A burger charcuterie board is the perfect way to get your kids excited to eat something nutritious and filling. They’ll get to build their own burger (and feel like a million dollars while they’re at it!), and between the variety of veggies, meats and sides, there’s something there for everyone. Probably the best part about this build-yourown burger board is that you can prep and lay everything out ahead of time, and add the burgers at the last second. Here’s a list of components I used for the burger board. Feel free to add or change anything to your liking.

They’re the dress-up kings of the country, the address for everything in disguise. In honor of Mordechai and Esther, The Monsey View speaks with Mr. Benyomin Rosenberg of Dress Up America, the brand we all associate with superbly designed costumes bursting with color, texture and hopping Purim vibes. Let’s hear them tell their tale.
Come Adar, the community’s children can be found poring over Toys 4 U costume brochures with the same intensity as they do the toy catalogs. There are so many choices, and the decision has to be made before the booklet is torn to shreds! How many costumes does Dress Up America contribute to the costume scene every year?
We generally introduce about thirty to forty costumes a year. Half of those are usually new designs, and the other half are redesigns of our most popular numbers, which get reproduced with small changes as needed every few years. The past two years, however, due to importing difficulties, we’ve been down to about twenty new costumes a year. That’s a lot of costumes! Who comes up with the ideas?
Mr. Yossi Itzkowitz usually comes up with the initial ideas, and then Mr. Yidel Grossman and myself sift through the options, discussing new concepts and redesigns before narrowing them down to the choices of the year. We’re always on the lookout for new ideas, and the inspiration can come from a variety of places. In addition to our own ideas, sometimes we see homemade costumes that have great potential to be popular on the retail market. In fact, fans often send us their original costume ideas directly and encourage us to create them for the public! 148

Once you settle on the year’s choices, who actually designs the costumes, and how does it get from concept to production?
Mr. Grossman and myself usually settled on a basic, overall look, and then we sit down with our Chinese manufacturers to discuss the actual details of the design. When it comes to more standard costumes, however — like a clown, for instance — we often outsource the initial design, which breathes new life into an old concept. Either way, once we’re in contact with our suppliers, communication can be really tricky. We’ve found that the best way to avoid unnecessary miscommunication is to show them an actual sample of a concept similar to what we envision, and then work off that to explain exactly what we need and how it should be tweaked. Even so, it takes tens of emails going back and forth to discuss the particulars of the design, and even when that’s settled, it’ll still take four or five samples until they get it just right.

Now, with production and transport all over the world in such disarray since COVID-19, things have become even more difficult. This year, for instance, we ordered our stock way earlier than we normally do, but even so, some designs will probably arrive only in time for Megillahleining. The merchandise is all on the boat, but the date of expected arrival keeps getting pushed off. How does sizing work?
Sizing is a bit complicated because costumes aren’t like clothing, where you can offer a product in every size — but it doesn’t have to fit as perfectly as clothing, either. What we do is stick to small ranges, and we make sure to send our standard size charts to all of our manufacturers. This is actually one part of production that can often go wrong. It doesn’t happen often, but we’ve had costumes — or more typically accessories — arrive with their proportions completely off. This usually means that the stock isn’t salvageable, and in those cases, we generally swallow the loss and make sure to fix the problem in the next round of production. Which costumes are the most expensive to produce?
Costumes composed of more than the standard polyester translate to more complex designs and more complicated productions, and this will be reflected in the price. That’s why you’ll find that our kallah costumes, as well as our colonial-era costumes — all of which in-
Legend has it that Dress Up America has its roots in your living room. How did that come about? About 30 years ago, my husband was in the process of establishing his now-legendary toy store on Lee Avenue. That year, what would later become Toys 4 U was renamed Itzkowitz’s Toy Store from Zipper Hospital, as it had been previously known. My husband had purchased the dry goods store almost on a whim, and in the early days, when he began focusing only on toys, it was up to me to teach him all he needed to know about the world of playthings. Come Adar, we’d fill the store window with dressed-up dolls, and all day, every day, people would come in and ask to purchase exactly what the dolls were wearing, whether it was the glasses, the hats, the clothes... That’s when I thought it would be a great service to the community to provide mothers with ready-made costumes, which were rather difficult to find at the time. So I took the leap and put myself to work sewing them! It wasn’t a big deal; I’d always enjoyed sewing, and it was a very rewarding pastime.
This seems like quite some enterprise! How many styles did you create, and how many of each? I sewed four styles: kallah and “fancy lady” costumes, as well as lions and bears. I sewed each design in three sizes — small, medium and large — and created about four of each size for each design, and more if I got any orders once the stock sold out in the store. What did the costumes look like? The gowns were made of shiny material — white for the kallah and gold for the other gowns — and the latter also boasted a sash that tied into a large bow. You can be sure that they were really pretty and of top quality! The lions and bears were also complete costumes. They had full bodies as well as hoods, and were adorably furry and textured. Styles like these were really hard to come by at the time, and they were a great success. How did you work out the technicalities? Where did you get your fabrics, and where did you do your actual sewing? I got the fabrics at Kohn’s Textiles on Broadway in Williamsburg. Mr. Kohn always stocked very beautiful seasonal fabrics, and he gave me good prices. Once the material was right, it didn’t take too much more to make the costumes work. As soon as I had my supplies ready, I set myself up in a room in our apartment that served as a sort of living room. I cut out a few pieces at a time, and then sat down to sew them together. I completed a few pieces every day in this manner. A few pieces a day! Yes. I specifically chose patterns that had fewer pieces and weren’t too complex, and I worked my way through them one by one. Once I had the right patterns and fabrics, all the costumes needed were a little more added detail, and they were good to go! Wow! How many years did this last? And was it worth the effort, profit-wise? I did it for two years. I’d begin working on the costumes about two months before Purim, and I filled orders until about a week before yom tov. After these two years, more and more costume manufacturers began producing costumes, so there wasn’t that much of a need for my own anymore. Besides, I had five or six little kids at the time, so I was pretty busy. Financially, I’m not sure it was worth it, but that wasn’t really the point. It was more of a service we wanted to offer to our customers. As it turned out, it was a great thing; the costumes all sold easily, and people were really grateful.

clude lacy detail — will be priced somewhat higher than other, more standard designs. Currently, our most expensive design is our dragon costume, but that one isn’t too popular in the heimishe market. Which other designs rank high on the popularity chart?
Career costumes — firemen, policemen, doctors, construction workers, chefs, etc. — are always most popular, but the patterns in our sales very much reflect current trends. Over the past two years, for example, our doctor and nurse costumes were especially popular due to… COVID-19. Of course. As another example, one of most popular choices in the general market are policemen costumes. In 2020, however, with Black Lives Matter and anti-police sentiment overtaking the media, we saw a significant drop in sales. How often do you order stock from your manufacturers, and how many costumes do you usually order in each size?
We generally order costumes twice a year. In regard to how many costumes in each size, the short answer is: It depends! The long answer is that if a costume is only popular in the Yiddishe market, then we order a couple of hundred of it in the popular sizes, and a bit less in the very small or very large sizes. This means that for these designs, we’ll usually order close to a thousand pieces of each one. If a costume, on the other hand, is also popular in the general market, then we usually order it in the thousands. And if it’s even more popular than that,
then we’ll place multiple orders throughout the year. Modeling must be a whole separate affair. How does that work?
The modeling and photography is definitely a project of its own! As soon as our designs are ready, the first thing that happens is that our modeling photographer — of which we use several — sends out a casting call. We generally need one young boy, one young girl and one toddler. While we do get a selection of photos to choose from, we also like to hear from the photographer which children they’d recommend working with. Because even if a kid appears to be a perfect fit, if he or she is a high-spirited child who won’t have the patience to model ten costumes in a row, then it’s bound to be a long day! When it comes to policemen, astronauts and so on, do you use real logos on the costumes?
No, we don’t use actual logos — and even so, we’ve still had plenty of unhappy campers! We used to have a special-op costume with the words NAVY SEALS emblazoned on it, until we got a call from their lawyer firmly requesting that we don’t feature their designation on our costumes. During our next production, we changed the words to SPECIAL FORCES. Wow! Have you ever gotten any other memorable feedback?
Well, speaking of the U.S. military, we did get a call saying that our Air Force costume is in fact the uniform of the U.S. Navy… but as of this year, that hasn’t yet been corrected. We’ve also found a non-Jewish costume manufacturer copying our rebbe costumes! While that may not have involved direct feedback, it was a move we found pretty amusing.
Their beginnings may have been humble,
but today Dress Up America has managed to costume thousands upon thousands of frightening pirates and bumbling clowns, fluttery butterflies and blushing kallahs. Their styles may be varied, but they all have one thing in common: a story as colorful as their design.

WHAT’S IN A HAT? Depends which hat, of course. It might be functional, fashionable or fun. Hats show something about the people who wear them. Sometimes a hat is a symbol of status or rank, while some hats tell you where the wearer comes from. Hold tight and come along for a fascinating ride!
SALUTE THE QUEEN — BEARSKINS I find it hard to imagine a soldier dressed up in one of these tall fur hats marching off to war. But back in the day, they were an important part of the British soldiers’ battle uniform. One guess what their purpose was? The army figured that the tall hats would make the soldiers look very large, and that would frighten off the enemy. Yes, for real. Today the hats, called bearskins, are worn only when performing ceremonial duties, such as being part of the Queen’s Guard. That’s why millions of tourists who come to watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace identify the bearskins as a unique London icon.

PIPE IT UP — STOVEPIPE HAT
TOP OF THE LINE — TOP HAT Legend has it that John Hetherington, the hat maker who created the top hat, frightened everyone who passed as he walked through the streets wearing this tall, shiny hat. But apparently the people overcame their fear pretty quickly. Soon, the tall, plush silk hat was worn by every self-respecting English gentleman living in the 1800s. You might think this hat is quaint, but you’d be only partially right. There are still very upper-class events in England that require attendees to wear a top hat in order to be admitted.
What looks like a top hat but is a lot less elegant? Answer: the stovepipe hat. This hat got its name because it looked just like the pipe connecting the stove to the chimney in every household of the day. A stovepipe was wider than a top hat, and it was missing that distinctive flair at the very top. This hat may look familiar to you from pictures you’ve seen of the sixteenth president. Abraham Lincoln was famous for his stovepipe hat, which he was never seen without. At over six feet tall, wearing a hat that was typically between seven and eight inches high meant that he towered over everyone around him. There was another unique purpose to the hat: Lincoln used to stash important papers inside it. Whether that was to protect the papers from rain, or to have them easily accessible at all times, you’ve got to admit it was a pretty clever storage solution.
BADGE OF PRIDE — FIREFIGHTER’S HAT
NOT JUST A HAT — JESTER’S HAT Ever heard of the court jester? Jesters were medieval clowns, who entertained kings and queens with their wit and jokes. Originally, the jester’s hat was supposed to look like a donkey’s ears and tail. Over time, it slowly evolved to become this iconic three-pointed hat. Jesters also soon began dressing in gaudy, bright clothing. To match the rest of their costume, their hats took on flashy coloring as well. And don’t forget the bells that jingled at the end of each point! This hat definitely gets points for originality.
No other helmet is shaped quite like the firefighter’s helmet, which has a tall dome and long brim that extends to the back. There’s a purpose to that design. When the firefighter is involved in putting out a fire, the dome protects him from falling objects, and the extended brim directs water or burning embers to the floor, as opposed to the firefighter’s collar. Besides functionality, the helmet is also a prized possession for the firefighter; their individual department number is usually displayed on its front. More than one firefighter has admitted that they store precious items, like treasured letters, in their hats when heading out to fight a fire.

AT THE PEAK — POLICE CAP That little blue hat worn by a police officer is called a peaked cap. You’ll see a little peak at the front that gives it that name. It’s navy blue, to match the rest of the officers’ uniform. The color was chosen simply because there were leftover blue uniforms from the Civil War when the police department was standardizing police clothes. The hats — and the color — have lasted until today, and remain unique features of the police force.
HARD AT WORK — HARD HATS
WARMEST WINTER — RUSSIAN USHANKA
I always thought that hard hats were called that because they’re worn for hard labor. But that’s a dreadfully wrong assumption. Hard hats were originally made in a way that required them to be steamed, and so they were called Hard-Boiled Hats. The name was shortened over the years, and that’s how the hard hat came into existence. Hard hats became necessary when worker safety regulations were legislated. Luckily, Edward Bullard, a war veteran, had already invented a protective hat modeled after combat helmets. This helmet was cheaper and more maneuverable than an army helmet, perfect for a worker in the mines or doing construction. These days, Bullard’s company is still around, producing these protective helmets out of plastic instead of the original shellacked canvas.
No one would doubt that the Russians are experts on how to stay warm in belowfreezing temperatures. The ushanka was one great solution. Created to protect from the coldest environments, it was made entirely of warm sheepskin or rabbit fur, with flaps for the ears that tied under the chin. It provided complete and cozy coverage for the wearer. Ushankas are actually still worn today, as part of winter army uniforms (yes, for the U.S army, too!) and for anyone else who needs to stay really warm — think people going skiing or mailmen who are out all day. But I won’t deny that it still seems very Russian, and who wants to look Russian now?
FASHIONABLE FELT — THE FEZ Believe it or not, once upon a time, during the nineteenth century in the Ottoman Empire, the fez was considered a modern hat. Until then, the common head covering in the Middle East was the turban. Then Sultan Mahmud II banned the turban and replaced it with the fez to bring his country up to date. In case you were wondering, yes, it’s supposed to be red. (Though there are those in other colors as well.) The very name fez was taken from the city of Fez in Morocco, where the crimson dye for the hats was created.

THE HAT OF PUNISHMENT — DUNCE CAP Kids today don’t know how lucky they are. Not only do they not have to walk a mile to school and learn in one-room schoolhouses, but they also don’t have the fear of being punished with a dunce cap. In schools of years ago, a child who misbehaved was forced to sit in front of the classroom wearing a pointed cap with a large letter “D” on it. The D stood for dunce, which means idiot. Why does dunce mean idiot, anyway? Well, there was a philosopher by the name of Duns who taught his students to think in a very convoluted way. Other philosophers didn’t like this, and they began calling his students “the dunces” in a rather derogatory way. And yes, the philosopher and his students wore pointed caps just like the punitive dunce caps used in schools.
FIT FOR A PRINCESS — ROYAL FASCINATORS What hat does a princess wear? Nope, not a crown; it’s a fascinator! These small hats or headbands are decorated with flowers, feathers and jewels, and perched on the front or on the side of an elaborate hairstyle. They can be designed with a theme, like a butterfly garden look, or in a particular color scheme. Fascinators are actually still worn by British royalty today. Decorating a fascinator can be lots of fun for a little girl who’s a princess-wannabe. Creativity and imagination are all that’s needed to make a fabulous design. Just don’t count on it getting you invited to a royal event!
BOWLED OVER — BOWLER HAT After a while of the top hat being fashionable, people got tired of wearing such tall hats. The hats were quite inconvenient for riders on horseback, who often got stuck in tree branches. It was time for a smaller hat, and the bowler hat, named after the Bowler brothers who created it, was the answer. Once this small, round hat was fashionable, it was worn by city gentlemen as part of their formal business getup. But bowlers are actually still worn today — by Bolivian women! Apparently, the British imported the hats for railway workers, but the hats became fashionable for the women instead.
BACK ON THE RANCH — COWBOY HAT The cowboy hat was invented, like so many other useful things, almost by accident. A cowboy by the name of Stetson shaped a piece of fur into a floppy hat, and wore it as a joke. But when he discovered that it was a great protection from the strong sun, he decided to begin selling such hats to his fellow cowboys. And the rest is history, of course. Strangely enough, many historians say that cowboys more often wore bowler hats, which were sturdier and smaller than the wide-brimmed cowboy hats. Somehow, though, the iconic image of a cowboy remains associated with this floppy hat.

IDIOMATIC HATS KEEP IT UNDER YOUR HAT — Sounds like something Lincoln and firefighters do, but this idiom simply means to keep a secret. AT THE DROP OF A HAT — When you do something immediately without thinking it through, you’re doing it at the drop of a hat. No comments on what it means if you do everything this way. HANG ON TO YOUR HAT — Something special is coming! When you want someone to know there’s a surprise you’re planning, just tell them to hang on to their hat. They’ll be waiting… TALKING THROUGH YOUR HAT — This idiom refers to someone who doesn’t know what he’s saying. MAN OF MANY HATS — While this reminds me of the guy who walked around yelling, “Caps for sale,” a man of many hats actually means to fill many different jobs or roles. OLD HAT — Hearing something again and again makes it seem old hat. It’s just not interesting anymore, which is the definition of this phrase. PULL A RABBIT OUT OF A HAT — This is more than just a magic trick. When you pull a rabbit out of a hat in the middle of a story, you’re introducing a surprise twist.

It’s a time of costumes and masquerades and double vision, and we can’t always be that sure that we’re seeing right or perceiving things the way they are! But while these doppelgangers were hardly distinguishable from Hussein, many Iraqis observed that through the actions of the bodyguards, who appeared much more relaxed when a pseudo-dictator was under their watch, they knew they were seeing a fake. Another giveaway was when the cameramen weren’t as scrupulous about taking those close-up shots their leader was known to adore, because it was actually a regular citizen they were filming.

History’s Doppelgangers While his name might not be that familiar, his role in history is famous indeed. General Bernard Montgomery was the British general during World War II, the very one behind the plans for the D-Day invasion in Normandy. In the time leading to this historic invasion, M15, the United Kingdom’s intelligence agency, took notice of a soldier named M.E. Clifton James, an Australian actor who had an uncanny resemblance to the general. It wasn’t soon before James was sent on a mission — and fitted with a prosthetic finger to hide his World War I scar, he pulled it off. He traveled around Gibraltar and

North Africa and made sure to be eavesdropped upon by Nazi spies while talking about pretend Allied plans to attack the area. The Germans, now “clued in,” ended up moving many of their troops to Southern France, and this was one of the reasons behind the successful D-Day invasion. Joseph Stalin was another infamous leader who employed body doubles. One of his doppelgangers, known as Rashid, was said to have been dismissed from the army because of his
startling likeness to the dictator. Once home, he was recruited by a KGB agent as a sit-in for Stalin, and he’d take his place at meetings and banquets. And he wasn’t the only one. Another famous double was Felix Dadaev, whose most major outing masquerading as Stalin was when he made the public journey to the 1945 Yalta conference, while Stalin himself took a secret flight. Until the age of 88, Dadaev never divulged this side job of his, only spilling the beans in 2008 with Putin’s encouragement. Oh, but we don’t want to get started there…

lature, used to joke about his resemblance to Hussein, a fact that earned him great fame during his twelveyear stint as an actor standing in for Hussein. “The resemblance is startling, even to me,” Haleva said. “When I’m dressed up in uniform, it’s almost scary.” In 1991, during Desert Storm, he was recommended to shave his mustache to be on the safe side and stay off anyone’s “wanted” lists. When Hussein was finally captured in 2003, the first concern that had to be addressed was to convince the public that it was indeed Hussein in the flesh and not one of his decoys that had been neutralized. And many skeptics to the entire doppelganger theory then asked the question: Where are Saddam’s replicas? Did they all die with him? And as they took apart the logistical reasons doubles were not possible, they tried to prove it to be a myth, one they wanted to debunk. In a world where we can never rely on what we see or hear, will we ever really know?

“I
don’t want to die! You can go home; I’m staying here!”
Dini’s voice was emphatic. She was determined to stay put. It was a Friday night in February 1991, and we had nearly finished our Shabbos seudah. Our guests, a young couple who also lived in Bnei Brak, were faced with a long walk home. But they were young and energetic; why should a twenty-minute stroll present a problem? Why did our guest protest so vehemently at the prospect of walking home? Thirty-one years ago, the reason was obvious: the Gulf War of 1991 was being waged right over our heads. Night after night, missiles — Scuds launched from Iraq — landed somewhere in our part of the country. (A few weeks further into the war, the Patriot anti-missile system intercepted many — but not all — of Iraq’s guided rockets.) Thus, it was no surprise that Dini dreaded the trip back home that Friday night. In contrast, her husband, Shmuli, was a calm, collected man of the world. At first he tried to quell his young wife’s fears by comparing the statistical risks involved in crossing a busy road or flying across the Atlantic Ocean with those of being struck by a Scud missile hurtling into the country from Iraq. His words fell on deaf ears. Dini, still in her teens and far from home and family, was petrified, statistics notwithstanding. “My mother said we shouldn’t stay alone on Shabbos,” she pleaded. It took but a few minutes’ discussion to persuade Shmuli that they should spend the night with us. We made up the guest room. I gave Dini a spare robe of mine for the night, and my husband presented Shmuli with a pair of his pajamas — much too large, but all that we had. Shmuli made a fine show of scrutinizing the nightwear, front and back, then held up the trousers to their full width — pronouncedly greater than his own girth — and pompously announced: “The colors and the pattern are fine, but would you have an ex-

True to form, Shmuli emitted a deep sigh and said, “I guess I’ll have to sleep with my hands in the pants pockets to keep them up around my waist.” We all had a good laugh and prepared to settle down for the night, dreading what it might bring.
S
ome four hours later, the sirens wailed. Three adults dashed to our designated sealed room — but where was Shmuli? From the dark innards of the guest room, we heard him mutter, “Just a minute, Saddam. I can’t find my pajama bottoms…” A second or two later, Shmuli joined us in the sealed room, firmly grasping the waistband of his flannel PJs. We sealed off the door with the plastic sheeting suspended over it and settled down for the duration of the attack. Of course, the words of Tehillim rang out. Finally, BOOM! The Scud had landed. We breathed a sigh of relief. Baruch Hashem, we had been spared. But our relief was mingled with apprehension: Where had it landed? On open land? We fervently hoped that no SOME FOUR one had been hurt, but we HOURS LATER, would find out only after Shabbos. THE SIRENS Now, anxious to get WAILED. back to bed, we waited for the all-clear signal. Shabbos morning, Shmuli davened with the first minyan. The young couple joined us for a quick kiddush and then made their way home, with many thanks for our hospitality. The remainder of Shabbos passed peacefully. After Havdalah, we learned that several buildings had been destroyed by the Scud the previous night. Dozens of people had been injured, but thank Heaven, there were no fatalities. Over a hundred people were now homeless, but thankful to be alive.

And what would the inevitable dark of night bring upon us? Weekdays were now brightened by daytime chasunahs, bar mitzvahs and other celebrations. Some carried their masks in the government-issued carton even by day, and at night we went to bed knowing that we wouldn’t get a full night’s sleep. The radio was always on, tuned to the special channel that sooner or later

would awaken us with the code words, “Nachash tzefa — viper snake!” The war had started a few months earlier, when Iraq, led by dictator Saddam Hussein, had invaded oil-rich Kuwait and annexed it to their own territory. The United States and its allies demanded that Iraq withdraw or face attack. When Hussein refused to bring back his troops, the United States issued an ultimatum: Either they lay down their weapons by January 16, 1991, or the U.S. would take action. Saddam merely laughed scornfully and presented a counter-threat: if the U.S. dared attack, they would pepper Israel with Russianmade Scuds, loaded with chemical and biological warheads. Israel’s Home Command immediately issued orders to civilians: Each household was to seal off one room of the house so that, in case of attack, lethal gas could not penetrate. First, all windows had to be taped up so that glass would not spray the room’s occupants with glass splinters. Second, the room was to have a supply of food and drink, and also rags and bleach that would be used to seal the cracks around windows and doors. They said this would neutralize poisonous substances in case of a gas attack. The government also distributed gas masks and special protective mini-tents for infants. As the countdown to January 16 progressed, the whole country was grasped with dread. On the final day, my daughter reported that her high school class was convinced that this would be their final meeting together, and the girls bid tearful farewells to one another. Indeed, in the middle of the night between the 16th and 17th of January of 1991, the first siren tore us out of our beds 170

with its piercing wail. We rushed to our sealed room, masks in hand. They were ugly, but welcome. My husband couldn’t get the tough plastic case to open, try as he might, and as a last resort, he threw it to the floor. (It worked, but the effect on the neighbors below us was devastating. The next day, they told us they were sure

Dutifully, we soaked rags with bleach and laid them at the bottom of the doors to our sealed room. The sharp, acidic fumes made us cough, even with the masks on. It was hours until the all-clear signal finally sounded. We were far too overcome with fear to think of going back to bed. The dreaded war had begun. How would it end? Schools closed (sound familiar?). No teaching staff could take the responsibility for rushing an entire class of youngsters into a sealed room within a matter of seconds. In those days, few people had radios and even fewer had time to listen to one. But now, suddenly, a radio was deemed a necessity. We tuned in to a special channel that was silent until a missile was detected even before the air raid sirens went off. Then a voice blared out the code words “Nachash
tzefa — viper snake!” That gave the country a few seconds of warning to grab their masks and run for shelter. We followed the daily tallies then just as we so recently followed COVID updates. In those days we checked every morning: Where were there hits during the previous night? How many people had lost their apartments, homes, stores, cars, and how many were injured? Masks were mandatory wherever you went, but you didn’t need to wear them — only carry them with you in case the siren went off. Unlike COVID masks, these were gas masks — large, clumsy, made of black AND WHAT rubber and fitted with a large, circular filter to DAY WAS eliminate lethal fumes. Packed with each mask FEBRUARY 28, was an EpiPen to self1991, ON OUR inject in case of gas poisoning. CALENDAR? Making a chasunah? NONE OTHER A bar mitzvah? Simchos were daytime affairs, THAN PURIM! and on a smaller, simpler scale. (Again, does this sound familiar?) A siren might interrupt a chuppah and send all racing for the nearest sealed room, masks in hand. We stayed at home as much as possible. Any neighbor going out for bread or milk would knock to ask whether we needed any groceries, and we reciprocated. Chesed reached even greater heights (as during COVID, as well), but nights were tense. We slept fitfully, waiting for the wail of the siren to pierce the air and send us scrambling to get children and adults into the sealed room. As the days passed, more and more buildings crumbled under the impact of the shrieking Scuds. Over 1,300 buildings were damaged or destroyed completely, including more than 6,000 apartments. There were stories of amazing hashgacha pratis. In one instance, a family decided at the last minute to spend Shabbos in another city because a relative there needed help. While they were away, their building took a direct hit from a Scud; they lost their apartment and everything in it, but their act of Chesed meant their lives were spared. And the unsurpassable Jewish sense of humor found fertile new soil in which to plant its seeds. One popular quip described a couple who, roused from their beds by the siren, rushed to vacate their apartment as quickly as possible. A cluster of neighbors were already huddled around the door to the elevator, and the gallant husband quipped to his wife: “You go down with the elevator; I’ll go down with the building.”
S
o it went, week after week, beginning from January 17. Finally, on February 28, the wonderful news came through: Iraq had surrendered! The war was
over! And what day was February 28, 1991, on our calendar? None other than Purim! Yes, that Purim, we felt orah v’simchah, the exultation

That Purim, we rejoiced not only for the Yidden of Shushan and all its kingdoms; we also danced and sang songs of thanks to Hashem, full of praise and rejoicing for our own redemption. I’m not sure exactly when it happened, but if I had to take a guess, I would estimate that it had to be a good 25 years ago. My in-laws had come for a visit one sunny winter afternoon, and our lunchtime conversation turned toward Purim. Like just about every other selfrespecting housewife of the time, my mother-in-law was visualizing the hamantaschen she was going to make, which would be joined in her mishloach manos by several squares of her famous Hungarian brownies, nestled in paper cupcake liners (yes, that was fancy, once upon a time.) And, of course, that iconic paper plate of baked goods would be enhanced by an orange and a few pieces of candy before being slid into a clear plastic bag and finished off with a simple twist tie. But my father-in-law had other ideas. Right then and there, he announced his intention to duct tape a can of Coke and a can of arbes together in lieu of baked goods and fruit. Suffice it to say that my mother-in-law was more than horrified by the idea, and that no duct tape was involved in any of their mishloach manos, that year or any other. Just the idea of my father-in-law wrapping canned goods with precisely cut pieces of duct tape still makes me smile. But lest we think that the joy that we associate with Purim is reserved only for things that go exactly as 174

planned, humor can be found everywhere in Adar, even in situations that might not seem funny at first. Take, for example, Purim 2019. With our youngest spending the year in seminary and everyone else married, my husband and I went to Flatbush to spend Parshas Zachor with daughter number two and her family. Somehow, time always runs short on Fridays and I threw a few things into my overnight bag and rushed out the door in my royal-blue Crocs so that we could get to Brooklyn on time. We were just getting to Flatbush when I realized that I had packed everything I needed for Shabbos except for one thing. My shoes. The only footwear I had with me were the Crocs that were currently on my feet, but since it was Parshas Zachor, going to shul wasn’t optional. Borrowing shoes from my daughter was out of the question, given that my feet are several sizes larger than hers, and with just an hour left before Shabbos, trying to buy a pair of shoes was also out of
the question, leaving me with only one choice: going to shul, in Flatbush, in my Crocs, because Parshas Zachor is Parshas Zachor. Thankfully, there weren’t too many people at the hashkamah minyan that my daughter and I attended, and I made sure to keep my feet hidden under the table as much as I could. Once we were home from shul, of course, we were able to see the humor in the situation, and today I keep a pair of foldable black flats in my overnight bag, a gift from another of my daughters who wanted to make sure I was never caught shoeless again. Then there was the Purim when an ongoing gag that I had been sharing with my brother took a very unexpected turn. Having received a rock-hard, ridiculously stale, plastic-wrapped
marshmallow from my brother in his mishloach manos as a joke the year before, I decided that the only possible response would be to save it with my Purim supplies and regift it to him the following year. When Adar rolled around, I pulled out the marshmallow, which obviously hadn’t gotten any softer, and hot-glued it to my mishloach manos, which that year consisted of a bottle of chocolate flavored seltzer along with a bag of homemade, hand-dipped Oreos. I set my brother’s mishloach manos apart from all the others I had made and added a note to the marshmallow that read, “Especially for you,” extending our running joke for yet another year. It was sometime on Purim day when I lined up all of my seltzer bottles neatly in a row on my kitchen counter to make them easier to distribute. About an hour later, I noticed that my brother’s special mishloach manos was… gone. My good-hearted daughter was nice enough to check with several of our neighbors to find out if they had actually gotten my brother’s package, but they all insisted that they had received a perfectly fresh bottle of seltzer and Oreos. Five years have passed since that Purim, and to this day, I still have no idea who was the unlucky recipient of that super-stale marshmallow. I can only hope they found the incident as funny as we did. But perhaps one of our most memorable Purim moments took place in 2014. My newest son-inlaw asked if he could make a Purim seudah for his chevrah in our house. Of course, we were more than happy to donate our dining room to the cause. As the day went on, one by one, my son-in-law’s friends started showing up dressed in very creative costumes and in various states of inebriation. One of my son-in-law’s closest friends arrived holding a gift from the entire group to thank us for hosting the seudah — and you didn’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that he had had more than a little to drink before he went to Oh! Nuts to buy a chocolate platter. The large wicker basket that he was holding was filled with goodies. There was Viennese crunch, several different types of truffles, and an assortment of chocolates wrapped in light-blue foil, all of which were a perfect match to the large teddy bear that sat atop the beautifully assembled arrangement. Clearly, he never noticed that the goodies he had picked up were meant for a shalom zachor and not a Purim seudah… So as Purim draws near, just remember that no matter how carefully you plan for the day, there is an excellent chance that something will go wrong. But instead of getting stressed out when the inevitable happens, remember that Adar is all about simcha — and smile, because the times when things go awry often make the best memories, ones that have you laughing out loud even years later. PLAYROOM The playroom is one of my favorite rooms to organize. Besides suddenly realizing once again that mini Legos have a zillion pieces, it’s so much fun! In addition, the decisions you make in this room are generally easier than in the bedrooms. Playroom cleanup time can range from 2 hours to 20 hours! The reason I’m being so generous with the allotted time is simply that the playroom, in most homes, doubles (and triples!) as a homework room, utility room, crafts room and basically an overall room that hosts the bulk of the home storage, toys and crafts. I love listening to children’s choirs when I tackle this room. Find something you love — or better yet, something that both children and adults love — though watching me get excited over Playmobil begs the question of, “Who qualifies as an adult, anyway?”

1. CLOSET Although my motto is “Empty everything!” I will let it slide when it comes to the playroom. You can still do that if you prefer to, but beware: This is a room where the kids come in, so if you empty all the toys and games at once, they may just decide to play with all of them at the same time. Vacuum corners. Work your way from the top down. GAMES: If you’re missing game pieces, call the company to send replacements. Not all the companies do. If you can’t get replacements, don’t put the box back into the closet! (Yeah, we all do that.) Tape any torn boxes. If the boxes are beyond repair, consider buying special game containers. You can also simplify it by using Sterilite’s 3-drawer storage solutions. Put the little play pieces in Ziploc bags and label everything. (I’m a huge fan of Ziplocs. All sizes.) PUZZLES: If the box needs to be discarded, cut out the

cover picture of the puzzle and put the puzzle into a Ziploc bag. LEGOS: Don’t attempt to wash them in the bathtub. A mesh bag in the wash machine works the best with mild detergent. Allow to air dry. CLICS: I haven’t tried washing them in the machine yet, but if you do and it works, drop us a line. I wash them with dish soap. A teaspoon of soap goes a long way. TOY CARS: Wipe with mild cleanser. DRESS-UP ITEMS: Wash in machine on gentle cycle. TRAIN TRACKS OR WOODEN BLOCKS: Wipe down with a damp cloth. Don’t soak them in water. DOLLS: Wipe down with a damp cloth. Detangle hair with a metal comb. Wash clothing on a gentle cycle. I’d love to go through every toy on the market, but unless
you want The Monsey View to be really, really cumbersome to lug around, we’ll stick to the basic toys. Wipe down any other hard plastic toys with a gentle cleanser. Soft toys can usually be washed in the machine on a gentle cycle. Throw away any broken toys. Give away any toys or games that your family has outgrown or that hasn’t been used in a while. This part is good to do with your kids. Wipe shelves before putting the toys and games back onto them. Wipe closet walls. Scrub with Soft Scrub where chocolaty hands have been. (It could’ve easily been mine.) Sweep bottom of the closet. Depending on the closet size, you might want to wash the floor with your trusty shmatte instead of trying to maneuver a mop in a small space. TOY TIPS: USE ONLY CLEAR CONTAINERS FOR THE PLAYROOM CLOSET. IT MAKES CLEANUP A BREEZE FOR THE KIDS. IF YOU KEEP YOUR CRAFTS IN THE PLAYROOM CLOSET, PUT THEM ON ONE OF THE TOP SHELVES SO LITTLE HANDS DON’T GET TO THEM.
2. FURNITURE Dust any furniture you have in the playroom. Wipe down the bookcase and shake out the books. Tape any torn covers. Wipe tables and chairs. Scrub if needed. Wall storage is a great way to keep things off the floor and make the room clutter-free if you don’t have space for everything in your closet. 3. CEILINGS AND WALLS Dust ceilings. Vacuum or dust the corners. Wipe light fixture with a damp cloth. If you’re removing it, make sure it is dry before you replace it. Dust your picture frames and wipe with a damp rag. Dust blinds with a slightly damp cloth. Wash windows and sills. 4. FLOOR: Sweep, dust and mop hardwood floors. RUGS: Most rugs, unless otherwise noted, can be machine washed. Air dry. CARPET: Resolve Carpet Triple Oxi Advanced works great on soiled spots. Sprinkle Febreze Powder on carpets before vacuuming to give the room a fresh, clean scent.

LINEN CLOSET This is the easiest closet in the home, and that’s why we’re sneaking it into the schedule this week, even though we know it’s a hectic one. However, the folding takes time. I suggest you do this at the quietest time of day when you can relax and just, well, fold and repeat.
Prep List: GARBAGE BAGS
VACUUM CLEANER
SHMATTES
CONTAINERS (OPTIONAL)
ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER
1. You knew this was coming! Remove everything from your closet, or one shelf at a time. Vacuum corners. Wipe shelves. Vacuum the bottom of the closet or wash floor. Torn or soiled linen should be discarded. Anything that hasn’t been used the past year should be donated. Here’s what stays in the closet: Linen and towels. That’s it! Anything else you’ve stored in there belongs elsewhere. Make it a worthy closet to look at with virtually no money or drilling involved by putting two nice bins on the floor and rolling up extra towels inside to create a “grab-and-go” convenience station for guests. 2. Fold the linens. How to fold a sheet: Spread the sheet out on a flat surface. Fold in half, wrong sides together, and tuck in corners. Fold in half again, tuck the elastic corners in. Fold in thirds lengthwise, and fold to desired size. Fold the duvet cover to the same size, and place on top. Pillow cases can be rolled up, or folded in a horizontal or vertical fashion on top of the linen set. I wish I could be in everyone’s homes to demonstrate, fold and figure out solutions to your individual needs, but alas, I’m just one person trying to put it down on paper. Feel free to ask for personalized tips! sarastyle2020@gmail. com. 3. Once the closet is done, potpourri bags can be hung on the door handle. If you’re into ribbons and flowers, dab them with lavender oil and display them nicely in the closet, or attach pins onto the flowers and stick them into the linens. I personally don’t go for any of the extras; I just spray my closets to give it that fresh scent. Right now I’m obsessed with Febreze Unstopables Fresh Fabric Refresher. 4. Blankets, throws and pillows: If you have extra shelves on top, then store them there. Otherwise they belong in storage.
Catch you next week!

Haman! Are you covering your ears yet? Can you hear the graggers, the horns, and the feet stomping? Erasing Haman’s name is definitely one mitzvah all children (and adults!) take very seriously! Did you ever wonder what Yidden did before graggers were around? Colors of Noise Erasing Haman’s Name Throughout the Generations Graggers are part of the ratchet family, which are instruments that make noise by having a stiff board mounted on a handle click against a gearwheel while it’s being swung around. Graggers are first recorded as being used by Yidden on Purim in the nineteenth century. How did children drown out Haman’s name before that? In thirteenth century Europe, children would write Haman’s name on pebbles and knock them together, so that his name would literally get erased. They would also break clay pots and bang on the shul’s tables with their hands or wooden sticks. A few hundred years later, Reb Moshe Isserles, the Rema, mentions children writing Haman’s name on pieces of wood and banging them together, so that — like with the pebbles — Haman’s name would get erased. In the seventeenth century, gunpowder became easily accessible, and Yiddishe boys in Germany wasted no time in adding it to their arsenal of noisemakers! They would use different combustible materials and generously sprinkle gunpowder or sulfur on top, which created a small explosive or firecracker. This custom quickly spread to Yiddishe communities in Poland, Lithuania, Romania and Russia.
Most modern car horns are an F note in music. 184
The Monsey View
Sometimes we need something to make noise in order to drown out other noise. Enter noisemakers! One of the most common relaxing sounds is white noise — a noise that includes all the frequencies audible to the ear, played at the same intensity. Therefore, it produces a clean, even sound that masks other noise. But did you know that besides white noise, there is pink and brown noise, too? Each one’s sound is at a slightly different frequency, which makes pink noise a little deeper, and brown noise a little rougher. Using such noises has been proven to help improve sleep, relaxation and even memory, since the smooth noise gives the brain a chance to relax. The exact opposite of white noise is... black noise! White noise includes all sound frequencies, and black noise has none — which means it’s just another name for silence!
The world record for the most people blowing party horns at one time was set on November 21, 2009, with 6,961 people in Tokyo, Japan.
A Tree in a Forest What is sound, anyway? Sound starts as a vibration in the air and is transmitted to our nerves through our ears. It is processed as a sound only at our nerve center, which brings us to the popular conundrum: If a tree falls in a forest and there is nobody around to hear it, does it actually make a sound?
By: Toby Diamant
Sounds in the Wild Animals that live underwater depend on sounds and echoes to get around and stay in contact with members of their family. Therefore, it’s no surprise that the loudest animal sounds are found in the ocean. The animal that emits the loudest sound is the blue whale, which can produce vocalizations of up to 180 decibels, which is as loud as a jet plane! Their sounds also travel the farthest and can be heard up to 99 miles away. Similarly, dolphins are known to create high-frequency clicks that create sound waves that bounce off nearby objects. This lets them know what is around them. Many other animals also use sound and howling to communicate with members of their family. Wolves, for instance, sound out unique howls to communicate with members of their family, and to warn surrounding packs of their presence.
The loudest noise ever recorded was produced when the islandvolcano Krakatoa, in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, exploded on August 27, 1883. The sound was heard 3,100 miles away.
Ancient Egyptians used small seashells to create whistles. They were also known to use reeds to create musical wind instruments.
Police car sirens usually sound at around 110 to 120 decibels. Sirens We hear emergency vehicles when they’re far away thanks to their super-loud sirens. The siren was invented in the late 1700s… as a musical instrument! It worked with a manual crank and produced a loud, high-pitched sound. After having it around for a while, however, musicians realized that the sound was too harsh for music. In the 1800s, fire stations began replacing their bells with the siren, though it still worked manually. It was only in the 1970s, after sirens went through many changes and became electronic, that police cars began sporting sirens.
