THERE’S A BETTER OPTION

(Re: FYI: Color Psychology, Issue 335) In the section of this article describing the effect the color pink has, the author writes that it’s “a pity that boys rooms can’t be painted pink.” This is ridiculous, because the article doesn’t seem to cover the color blue, a color which research has shown — especially in the case of light-blue — to have a very calming and relaxing effect. Many people use that color for bedrooms because blue is extremely cool and relaxing. So we should be saying the opposite: Perhaps we should paint girls rooms blue, since blue may be the better of the two! D.E.

(Re: Wholesome and Heavenly, Issue 335) Thanks for the recipes this week. So far I’ve tried two of the three featured ideas, and they’re both out of this world! (Even those in my family who “don’t like healthy stuff” enjoyed them immensely.) In the date truffles I actually substituted the fresh dates for dried ones because that’s what I had at home, and they came out great. A Reader

MORE ON MISOPHONIA

(Re: My Life With Misophonia, Issue 334) The article was amazing and so well put. The phone calls kept coming from those checking if it was I who had written it! I’d like to add a few points. • As a fellow misophonia sufferer, I’d like for all of my peers to know that they are free of blame. I know that this “monster” is “self-induced.” • The closer the person is to us, the more nervous we get from the irritating sounds. Why? This remains a mystery and is as inconclusive as the entire misophonia thing. • An interesting “heimish” study conducted by yours truly and a friend found that someone who’s suffered from many ear infections as a child is more prone to have misophonia! • I’d also like to add some more popular triggers: • Sinks dripping (that broken faucet!) • Telephone messages and alerts • Chair-scraping • Recliner-rocking • A fork scraping against teeth Imo Anochi B’tzarah

(Re: My Life With Misophonia, Issue 334) I want to chime into the conversation regarding misophonia and misokinesia. First, while the article and letters suggest that there is no cure for misophonia and its sister misokinesia, I don’t see why exposure therapy should not be effective for this condition. Exposure therapy basically requires that you expose yourself over and over again to the source of your anxiety. It also requires that you do not engage in any protective actions, like closing your ears, leaving the room, or even just grimacing inwardly or outwardly in response to the trigger. This is very effective for overcoming phobias, anxiety and chronic pain (as per Dr. Sarno’s method, wherein a person stops treating and fighting his pain, which causes it to finally “burn out”). So to all of you misophonia sufferers out there, gather the children round, hand out the crunchy snacks and listen to the chomping. Have your friends call you and schmooze while they chew loudly into the phone. It’s going to be very, very painful. You might want to use the flooding technique, where you expose yourself to your trigger and do not leave until you feel the terror and anger burn out in you. If that’s too much, you can expose yourself to your trigger for shorter periods of time more frequently until the terror and anger and disgust slowly release their grip on you. Another thing I want to point out on the subject of misophoTHE MONSEY VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

nia is that many sufferers have adopted a pretty self-centered attitude in regard to their responses to different sensory stimuli. It has unfortunately become very acceptable in our society for the person who suffers from a particular sensitivity (and many of us suffer from all sorts of unique sensitivities) to expect the world to be sensitive to their needs, despite the fact that they understand that they have just that: a sensitivity. It has also become acceptable and commendable to verbalize our needs to all those around us, and so it is not common for miso sufferers to drive all those around them crazy. “Can you stop chewing so loudly?” “Keep your mouth closed when you eat.” “Stop clicking that pen!” “Sit straight in your chair.” “Ew, that’s disgusting!” All of these expressions are in contradiction to the middos of savlanus, anavah and aidelkeit. Of course, one should be exceedingly kind to miso sufferers. If you are near somebody whom you happen to know has a particular sensitivity, please work on your middos and be kind to them. It is ironic that those who will never bother others with their sensitivities will endure great suffering to accommodate other people’s sensitivities. It’s not really a contradiction; it’s the hallmark of a baal middos. In our home, whenever one child gets nervous from another, I command the “sufferer” to remove himself from the situation instead of harassing his sibling to “be quiet” or “stop singing.” It’s an ironclad rule in my home: If you don’t like it, remove yourself from the situation. Then, once the victim is no longer within earshot, I’ll approach the instigator and quietly command, “You know this bothers your brother, so stop doing it.” May all miso sufferers out there find their yeshuah b’karov. Sincerely, Chana Horowitz

THE SERVICE IS FOR YOU

(Re: All You Have To Do Is Ask, Issue 332) Thank you for your article on customer service requests. No company wants a dissatisfied consumer. I once contacted a pencil company when my pencil sharpened down to the eraser without producing a point — and received a box of pencils. I’ve reached a baggie company when a pack of plastic baggies turned out to be stuck together into one mass — and received a box of baggies. Recently, I opened a dip container and contacted the company for a refund when I found unhealthy-looking discoloration under the wrapper. They were very courteous. But my brand-new washing machine is the most significant thing I’ve ever acquired. After six years of struggling with a “lemon,”, which yielded load after load of sopping wet laundry (after the spin cycle was complete) and necessitated frequent technician visits, the company finally caved in. They informed me that the replacement part needed for the permanent repair cost more than the machine is worth, and they sent me a check covering the cost of a more upgraded washer. Customer service lines have been put in place to assist the consumer in achieving satisfaction from a product. Use them. A satisfied consumer, R.S.

We want to bring to your attention the worldwide paper shortage that is greatly impacting the printing industry, including The Monsey View. COVID-related issues, which have tremendously slowed down production over the past year, are now compounded by both the extension of a Finnish paper mill firm strike and the truckers strike in Canada, which are directly affecting our suppliers. Due to the cumulative impact on production, you may notice short-term changes in the quality of our paper. While we are doing everything we can to procure the top-grade paper we are known for, further drops in quality may be inevitable in the coming weeks. Nevertheless, you can be assured that our content will remain as superior as always. We are carefully watching the unfolding situation and will continue to update you on its repercussions. We are hopeful that this temporary issue will be resolved soon and that we will revert to our usual premium paper as soon as the situation resolves, b’ezras Hashem.

134

The Monsey View

What are various factors that make up the current paper crisis? The rapid growth of online purchases, greatly exacerbated by COVID-19 lockdowns, has channeled much of the pulp and manpower to the production of packaging materials and corrugated boxes. The shipping industry is seeing galloping cost hikes and prolonged delays due to container shortages, stalling the delivery of the goods from abroad. Further freight issues are caused by a truck driver crisis, which has led to a truck-to-load shortage this January of ten truckloads to every truck, a record high. To compound an already difficult paper situation, the ongoing paper mills strike has shut down the plants at a major Finnish forestry group, halting the work of it’s 3,000 employees. The Canada truckers protest both diverted the means for a flow of goods to cross the border and obstructed the border with its convoy, preventing Canadian paper from reaching the U.S.

Where does most of The Monsey View’s paper supply come from? Finland and Canada are from the world’s leading paper and pulp producers, and our paper is sourced from these two countries.

Why are the paper mill employees on strike? The employees of leading Finnish paper, pulp and biofuel plants have launched a strike action on January 1, after the company and its workers union failed to come to a new collective labor agreement.

How long is the strike expected to last? The strike has been extended three times since it began. The latest extension was announced Friday, February 4, and will be in effect until March 12, unless an agreement between the company and its union can be signed prior to this date.

Why are Canadian truckers on strike? On January 15, Canada imposed a vaccine mandate for the trucking industry. Under the new regulations, unvaccinated Canadian truckers reentering Canada after delivering goods must get tested for COVID-19 and quarantine. This sparked an instant reaction, and soon a large convoy of truck drivers and their supporters took to the roads in protest. It soon snowballed into blockades in the Canadian capital of Ottawa and an obstruction at the U.S.-Canada border, paralyzing parts of the country.

How long is the truckers protest expected to last? While the Canadian government has issued a state of emergency and is working on ending the protests, at time of print, the situation is still unfolding.

PARSHAS KI SISA On Fire

Klal Yisroel was commanded to contribute exactly a half-shekel coin per person for the Mishkan. Rashi cites the Midrash that explains that Hashem showed Moshe Rabbeinu a coin of fire and told him that this was the weight of the coin that each Yid should contribute. Why was the coin made of fire? Why did Hashem not show Moshe a regular silver coin? RAV YEHOSHUA LEIB DISKIN (1818–1898) used to share a couple of words of mussar toward the end of his shiur for his elite talmidim in the city of Brisk. One time, the topic was the nisyonos that man experiences in this world, and the means he has to overcome them. “There is the nisayon of poverty,” he said. “It’s a challenge that many of us are very familiar with on a daily and even hourly basis. But there is an even greater challenge with money, and that is the nisayon of wealth. “When a person becomes wealthy, he is liable to forget from where the money came, and he becomes tightfisted, as if he himself is the proprietor of the wealth. Worse than this,” Rav Yehoshua Leib continued, “is that wealth sometimes causes the person to forget his Creator, as the Torah says, ‘Vayishman Yeshurun vayivat… vayitosh Elokah asahu — and Yeshurun became fat and rebelled… and forsook the G-d Who made them’ (Devarim 32:15).” Later that afternoon, one of Rav Yehoshua Leib’s younger talmidim came to his home. His teeth were chattering, and his hands were trembling in fear. “What happened?” Rav Yeshoshua Leib asked.

140

“A great tragedy… I just found out that I won the lottery. I now own a large sum of money. According to what I heard today in the Rav’s shiur, wealth is dangerous, and I am so afraid…” Rav Yeshoshua Leib smiled and calmed the quivering yungerman. “True, wealth can be a great stumbling block to man — to man who is unaware of its danger. But one who recognizes the danger from the start, and prepares himself accordingly, won’t be harmed by the wealth. To the contrary! He can be a source of benefit to many people.” The Rav then told his talmid to recite the bracha Hatov V’hameitiv, and he replied with a resounding amen. * * * * *

We can take a message from the coin of fire that Hakadosh Baruch Hu showed Moshe Rabbeinu. Fire has two properties. One is tikkun — to warm, light up and cook. The other is destruction — to burn, smother and devastate. Man holds the power to decide which function of fire to use. He can use fire to build or to destroy. The same holds true of money. If a person knows the proper way to use money, his wealth can be a good thing. But if he chooses to use it foolishly, squandering it on silly things and not sharing it with those less fortunate, his money will only serve to damage and burn, just like the matbeia of fire. * * * * * There’s another lesson to be gleaned from the coin of fire, as the following tale illustrates. A wealthy man once approached Rav Chaim of Volozhin. He was known as a big ba’al tzedakah, distributing huge sums for the poor. One day, his fortune changed. His business took a turn for the worse, and he lost most of his money. “Rebbi,” he said in a brokenhearted voice, “I am going through difficult times. I don’t know how I could possibly listen

EXPRESS YOUR CREATIVITY IN GRAPHICS

Should I decrease the amount of money I give? Or should I rather continue giving, even if it means going into debt? to the cries of the poor people who are dependent on me and will now have nothing. If I want to continue giving tzedakah the way I have until now, I will have no choice but to borrow money from others. I am wondering… Should I decrease the amount of money I give? Or should I rather continue giving, even if it means going into debt for it?” Rav Chaim did not respond immediately. He sat, deep in thought for a while, pondering the situation with his sharp da’as Torah. Rav Chaim was renowned for the depth of his bitachon, which he often spread to other Yidden as well. Finally, he said, “You should continue giving on your generous standard. You needn’t worry about parnassah, because clearly, one who gives tzedakah does not lose out.” The wealthy man listened and continued his righteous ways. Several weeks later, a telegram arrived from the wealthy man. It shared the good news that Rav Chaim’s opinion had been a blessing for this man. His wheel of fortune had suddenly turned for the better again, when he won 500,000 rubles in a lottery. Rav Chaim was happy to hear the news and even repeated the tale to his talmidim in yeshivah to warm their hearts to the revealed hashgachas Hashem. * * * * *

When a person gives from his own bank account, even though it may seem as if he is losing, he is most certainly gaining. This message was hidden in the fiery coin shown to Moshe Rabbeinu. Just like when one uses a fire to kindle another flame, the original fire does not lose or get diminished, so too, when a person donates from his own pocket to tzedakah, he needn’t worry that he will lose out. The donations of the machatzis hashekel were used to count Klal Yisroel after the Cheit Ha’egel and also served as an atonement. They were melted down and recast as silver adanim, sockets that supported the beams of the Mishkan. Using the coins to create the foundation of the Mishkan implied that Klal Yisroel’s contributions provided a new basis for the Shechinah to dwell in their midst again. (Alshich)

East Ramapo Monitor Backs Rabbi, Takes Reporter to Task for Allegedly Deliberate Omissions Just days before a supposed exposé was about to run, a reporter for The Journal News has come under fire for misrepresenting facts regarding millions of dollars in federal funding destined for East Ramapo’s private schools. Early last week, The Journal News ran teaser posts on social media for an upcoming article titled “Rabbi holds the strings on $76M for East Ramapo School District.” The posts showed a white hand controlling seven puppets on strings, sitting atop piles of money, reminiscent of anti-Semitic images of moneydriven Jews exerting power and influence over others. Historically, similar images have provoked pogroms and other anti-Semitic violence including the 2018 shooting in a Pittsburgh shul that killed eleven, according to an Agudath Israel of America statement that called on The Journal News to apologize. Community Education Center director Rabbi Hersh Horowitz issued a statement identifying himself as the rabbi discussed in the article, reported Hamodia. Rabbi Horowitz said that the article, which was scheduled to be released on February 9, was not the first published by The Journal News attempting to discredit him, and that the $76 million in federal funding had been earmarked specifically for private school students, despite suggestions in the article that it had been diverted from public schools. Rabbi Horowitz also noted that all school district contracts are subject to a rigorous review process and that multiple audits have not found any issues with the CEC. State Commissioner of Education Betty Rosa ruled last October in favor of the CEC in a recent claim regarding a district contract, said Rabbi Horowitz. Bruce Singer, state-assigned monitor for the East Ramapo School District, backed up Rabbi Horowitz, saying that all of his claims were 100% accurate. Singer said that he had spoken with the article’s author, Thomas Zambito, and told him that he was misrepresenting the truth, and in the interest of fairness, should have acknowledged that the $76 million in funding was being distributed over multiple years. Singer said that he also told Zambito that multiple audits of the CEC had yielded only positive comments and all bids won by Rabbi Horowitz had been won fairly. But perhaps most disturbing were Singer’s allegations that Zambito has repeatedly attempted to 148

mislead readers in articles on funding allocated to East Ramapo’s private school community. “Mr. Zambito has written a few articles about which I have directly spoken to him and said he did not put in all the facts that the allocation of federal money is dictated by law and that the winners of the bids are publicly available,” said Singer. “And he didn’t disagree with me about my statements that he was not giving his readership the full story.” In addition to deleting the social media images promoting the upcoming article within hours of their posting, The Journal News published an apology three days later. Executive editor Mary Dolan said that the editors did not realize that the image was inflammatory or degrading. “We’re deeply sorry this passed our review,” wrote Dolan. “We condemn all forms of anti-Semitism in all ways that it is expressed. We are grateful to all who sought to educate us on the history and hate behind the image.” But Dolan stopped short of pulling the article, saying only that the paper’s editors would “reflect on our misstep over the illustration and engage in considerable outreach and listening with local Jewish communities.”

ten months or longer. The pandemic, which had employees working from home and leaving truckloads of paper returns sitting outside the IRS’ closed offices for months, is just one reason for the backlog. Also to blame, according to a new IRS inspector general report, are a lack of funding to hire new employees, inefficient practices within the agency, and outdated equipment, some of which dates back to the 1960s. In a typical year, the IRS normally has one million or fewer unprocessed returns remaining when January comes, but one IRS official estimated the number of backlogged returns at 6 million last month, while a taxpayer advocate put the number at 10 million or more. Both fall far short of the 24 million number that was just recently reported, which includes 9.7 million paper returns waiting to be processed; 4.1 million returns containing errors because of stimulus payment, pandemic relief or similar issues; 4.1 million amended returns; and 5.8 million pieces of correspondence that have yet to be resolved so that taxpayers can file their returns. According to the IRS, tax returns that are filed electronically are typically processed more quickly than paper returns.

Portion of Route 45 To Be Renamed for Fallen Firefighter Nearly one year after his death, Spring Valley firefighter Jared Lloyd will be honored posthumously for his heroism with a much-traveled village roadway renamed in his memory. Mid Hudson News reported that Senator Elijah ReichlinMelnick, Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski and Assemblyman Michael Lawler announced last week that Route 45 between New Hempstead Road and East Eckerson Road would be renamed the Jared Lloyd Memorial Highway. Lloyd, a member of Columbian Fire Engine Co. No. 1 for more than fifteen years, was one of the first to respond to the March 2021 fire at Evergreen Court Adult Home in Spring Valley, helping save the lives of more than 100 residents. “We must never forget his sacrifice, and by joining together to name this section of Route 45 after him, we will ensure that his legacy lives on,” said Zebrowski.

CHAPTER SIXTY-NINE RECAP: While

walking in isolation, Elazar Reiness thinks of a great shidduch idea: Effy Kreisman for Osher’s sister Ariella. Eventually, Rabbi Reiness makes it to a road, where a taxi driver finds him and brings him home. But it is already dark; the day of the longawaited meeting is over.

D

eep pain. Plain joy. Intense fury. Was it possible to be feeling all three of these emotions together, like a trio of grapes on one vine? “Rebbi, let us drink a l’chaim that you were saved.” A very late Maariv had just ended. A few bachurim brought out a bottle of liquor, opened a table, and ordered pizza. Rabbi Reiness smiled, wondering if it reached his eyes. “Sure,” he said, “but I only drink grape juice.” Borei pri hagafen. L’chaim. How sweet and juicy is the grape as its flavor spills out, much like the gratitude he felt spilling out in his heart for his safe homecoming. There were a few moments during the past day when he hadn’t been sure that the story would end quite like this… And with it was that deep, tart pain, and the tremendous void that the abandoned lot had left in Yitzchak Shikovitzer, z”l, a loss that had been transferred to his own father, who did not merit to do anything about it. And he, Elazar, was continuing on the path of both of these men. He had not merited to get the land back. He had dedicated nearly three years of his life to this effort, and it had all been for nothing. Reb Elazar studied the thin plastic cup, halffilled with the dark liquid. He didn’t regret his years here; his carpentry shop was alive and well, and the bachurim were thriving. And yet. That’s when the next emotion arose, trem-

bling with fury. There did not seem to be a chance, the lawyer had said — perhaps one and a half percent, and even that was optimistic. Reiness hadn’t been there at the time of the meeting, and the Arabs had been. And it was all over, or nearly all over. According to the lawyer, this “nearly” would not have any practical significance. The lot would stay with the Al-Alamis, and Shikovitzer’s dreams of a shul would be buried forever. Seventy years of anticipation had gone down the drain because of one boy. He liked Osher. He still did. This young, impulsive student had come here with despairfilled eyes, and those eyes were now filled with different things, far better things. But why had he done it? Why? He was angry at Osher, so very angry. True, this Yussuf had light-gray eyes, and he certainly didn’t appear Arabic. But why did Osher have to run to tell him that he was leaving Acco and that he was unhappy here? Even before all the complications that this had caused, what about the blatant ungratefulness that he had displayed? When would the kid learn some basic behavioral norms? “Rebbi, you’re not drinking!” “Thanks, boys.” Reb Elazar pushed away the full cup. “It’s too sour for me.” “So then wine, Rebbi!” Shlomo approached with a bottle. “Moriah is really light, Rebbi; it’s nothing!” “No, thanks.” He smiled and rose. “There’s nothing like you, boys. Hashem will help, right?” A babble of voices answered: “Sure!” and “What’s the question!” but he was listening out for Osher’s voice. And suddenly, he realized that he hadn’t seen him, besides at that first moment when he arrived. He closed his eyes for a moment. There was no reason to be angry at Osher; he was just the stick. There are children who struggle to learn all kinds of things, and it takes them a very long time to learn them. They need to be taught and taught and taught again, until the happy ending.

And there still could be a happy ending; he certainly believed that, even if the story with the lot had ended so dismally. He took a deep breath. “Where’s Osher?” he asked. “I hardly saw him.” “I don’t know,” someone said. “Maybe he went up to his room.” “He didn’t go up,” Dovid said. “I think I saw him leaving the yard a few min-

“What’s with Osher?” Nechemia turned his head to the window, looking out at the black sea. His mother replied, “His sister came today.” “Before I came back?” “A few minutes afterward.” “So where is she now? Not at that Arab lady, I hope…” Sarah chuckled. “She went back for one night to the room she’d rented in Acco right at the beginning. Tomorrow morning, she’ll go back to Bassi’s house.” “Why did she come? To be with Osher?” “He felt awful about this whole mess,” she said simply. “And I’m happy that he has some family who could be with him now, because you weren’t available, and I wasn’t able to be. And Nechemia is still angry at him.” “Of course I’m angry at him!” their son exclaimed heatedly. “He —” “Enough, Nechemia,” his father said. He sat silently for a few moments. First he bit his bottom lip, but as the moments passed, his pressure dissipated. He took a deep breath. “I want to speak to Yechezkel Rosenberg from Kiryat Chaim.” “Rosenberg?” Nechemia asked. “Yes. He is teaching Osher to write safrus. I want to book another lesson for this week, and a regular schedule for the coming month. I want Osher to have a clear study track.” “Really.” Sarah’s tone was somber, while Nechemia helped himself to a plate of eggplant salad straight from the pot. He sat down and began to eat. “Yes, really.” Bend the stick back to the other direction. “I also want to call his parents in Bnei Brak.” “The Erenbaums? Osher spoke to them this evening.” “He did?” He glanced at his watch. It was twelve o’clock. “Yes, and it was a good conversation. Ariella called to tell me about it. And he’s also planning to apologize to you…” “To apologize to me,” Elazar echoed. His eyes shifted to Nechemia’s face. The boy looked like he was going to choke on his food; then he stood up and left

utes after you came in, Rebbi. Can I offer the Rav some pizza? There’s plenty!” “No, thanks.” Rabbi Reiness smiled at his student. “I’m going up to sleep. I’ve had an exhausting day.” Sarah and Nechemia, his younger son, were waiting upstairs. A thick soup bubbled on the stovetop, and a plate of fresh bread sat on the table along with a dish of hot eggplant salad. Elazar felt a twinge of nausea. “You’re so pale!” Sarah said. “I think before anything, I’m making you a cup of tea.” “I prefer cold water,” Elazar said, sinking into the nearest chair. He closed his eyes. “Maybe we should go to the hospital for some tests? You had a pretty dreadful hike today.” “You really don’t look good, Tatty,” Nechemia said worriedly. “No need,” he said, with closed eyes. “Lying in the emergency room for three hours, just to hear that I probably got a bit dehydrated and need some IV fluids, and after that I’ll be able to go home to sleep? I am better off drinking some water now, through my mouth, and going to sleep without the whole ruckus.” Sarah laughed, but then grew serious. “And what about eating?” “Maybe afterward.” He opened his eyes and made a bracha on the water. He sipped it slowly, and began to feel better.

the kitchen. Rabbi Reiness drummed his fingers on the table. “I’m glad they had a good conversation,” he finally said. “In any case, I also want to speak to them. I have a shidduch for his sister.” “For Ariella?” “Yes.” “She’s not listening to shidduchim, unfortunately.” Sarah ladled some soup into a bowl. “Haven’t we spoken about this already?” “You may have mentioned something, I think. Why doesn’t she want to listen?” “Go figure. I can’t judge her.” He stood up and went to the sink to wash his hands. “I’m not judging anyone,” he said, “but I…” He paused and studied his nails. “Tell her that she has to at least listen and look into it. It’s my condition for forgiving Osher.”

Osher I spoke to Tatty today. It was after the Rav came back, and Ariella showed up just a few minutes later. It worked out perfectly for me, because I couldn’t bring myself to look him in the eye. I just shook his hand and then ran outside. With all the police and excitement and fuss, no one really needed me around, so it was good I had someone to talk to. We went out to the street and looked out at the sea. Behind us, the yard was filled with bachurim, police, the media and just curious onlookers. I stood with Ariella in silence, like we did when we were little. “I really understand you,” she suddenly began. Without a word of apology about her pursuit of me — but it didn’t really make such a difference anymore. It was strange how Motzei Shabbos had been just last night, and I had been so furious about the whole thing, and now it didn’t matter. So she’d followed me. Big deal. So many things happened since then that I couldn’t even remember what had gotten me so angry to begin with. “I really understand you, especially the whole part with Yussuf, who lied to you when he said he was the Rav’s friend and that he was Jewish. I had something similar happen to me recently…” And then she told me how, before she came to the Bergs, she’d rented a room in an Arab lady’s house, without 160

knowing that she was an Arab. The story sounded really scary, but when she described the orange candles and the lady’s crazy talk, I just began to laugh. So did she. “Not only do I understand you,” she added afterward, “but so do Tatty and Mommy. I told them everything, and they said that they really hope that none of the boys here will insult you or blame you for anything, because it was a mistake that anyone could make. They’ll tell this to you themselves, I’m sure.” And then I called home. Tatty answered the phone. I asked him how he was doing. We hardly spoke about the Rav’s abduction and my getaway the night before. He just said that they had been worried about me and were happy that, baruch Hashem, everything was okay now. At the end of the conversation, I told him that I was learning to write safrus with the Rav’s friend, and he said, “I hope everything is okay with your Rav now, Osher. You owe him a lot of hakaras hatov.” “He looks fine,” I said. “They didn’t hurt him or anything. But I really don’t know what’s going to be with his contract. There was this issue here… I didn’t get all the details, but I know that it got very messed up now. The contract is actually why the Arabs kidnapped him.” “Yes, we heard that a serious problem has come up with that. Let’s daven that everything works out for the best.” It sounded like he wanted to say something more — maybe he wanted to suggest that I apologize to the Rav — but he didn’t say it. We were both quiet for a few seconds, and then he asked, “So, when are you going to come home for a Shabbos, Osher? We miss you. Especially now, we want to see that you’re safe and sound and in one piece.” I smiled, and I could hear him smile, too; it was an old joke at home after every trip or outing that one of us kids took. “Maybe next week, or the week after. Would you want to see something I wrote at the sofer?” I asked. “I’d love to,” Tatty replied. “But first, I want to see you.” To be continued…

SLOPPY JOE R ATATOUILLE I used dark turkey in this recipe, which can be replaced with any chopped meat. If you’re using ground white chicken or turkey, increase the oil as needed to obtain a moist dish.

INGREDIENTS 4 2 1 1 1 1 2 1 ⅓ 1 1 ½ ¼

T. oil garlic cloves, minced large onion, chopped small eggplant, diced small zucchini, diced cup diced peppers lb. ground meat (6 oz.) can tomato paste cup water T. salt tsp. sugar tsp. basil tsp. pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Line the pizza maker with two liners (since the constant mixing may cause the paper to tear). Heat the pizza maker. 2. Add the oil, onion and garlic, and cook for 5 minutes. 3. Add the remaining vegetables, and cook for an additional 10 minutes. 4. Add the rest of the ingredients, and mix until the meat is crumbly. 5. Cook for 20 minutes, stirring every few minutes.

CHICKEN STIR FRY This dish is prepared in batches and is full of great flavor and texture. You can replace the broccoli with string beans.

INGREDIENTS ⅓ 2 1 2 ½ 2 1

cup sliced almonds chicken cutlets cup chopped onion cloves garlic, minced tsp. salt Pinch of white pepper T. oil tsp. soy sauce

YOU’RE INVITED! RUTHIE’S-AUGENBRAUN’S RENAMING CELEBRATION BY: Y E H U D I S G OT T E S M A N

Hi, I’m so interested to hear about the changes happening at Ruthie’s Augenbraun’s, but can you first give me a little background. What does Ruthie’s Augenbraun’s sell? Sure, Ruthie’s has a huge selection of teens’ and womens’ wear, including basics, fashion, Shabbos, Yom Tov, and Simcha wear for all shapes and sizes. We carry teens and ladies sizes, from XS to 3X, as well as Juniors’ sizes 12-22. This covers the in-between age girls that aren’t quite children but aren’t adults yet either. Additionally, we have our own gowns, designed exclusively for Augenbraun Gowns! All gowns are available for rent and many are available to buy. We also make completely custom gowns from start to finish.

And how did you, Chanie Koplowitz, become “Ruthie”? I originally owned Augenbraun’s Gowns. Augenbraun is my maiden name. My mother, may she live and be well until 120, opened the first Augenbraun branch in Brooklyn when my first sister got married in 1995. When I got married and moved to Passaic about 20 years ago, I opened a branch in my house. When we outgrew the space about 12 years ago, we rented a store in The Monsey Hub. We were thrilled with the new customer base in Monsey and B”H our business grew. A little under 5 years ago, we heard that Ruthie was looking to sell her store so she can move closer to her family. We thought it was the perfect match for us, as we already had lots of retail and fashion experience. Baruch Hashem, the sale went through and we merged Augenbraun’s Gowns with Ruthie’s.

That’s amazing. Have you always worked exclusively in the clothing industry? No! I actually went to school for nutrition. I am a Registered Dietitian. I first worked in rehabilitation facilities and then I switched over to early intervention and worked in Monsey with nearly all of the early intervention agencies. I worked with many Monsey families to help their children with any diet issues they had. I still keep up with some of these amazing inspirational mothers. After 20 years in the dietary field, I retired because I got too busy with Ruthie’s and Augenbraun’s Gowns. (I am BH a mother of 6 and a grandmother of identical twin boys!!) It was a hard decision to make, to let go of the job that I went to school for, and along with it, the satisfaction of helping so many yiddishe kids. But, I am happy with the decision I made. There is so much to do on a daily basis at Ruthie’s Augenbraun’s. There is greeting and helping the customers,

ordering a full season’s stock, reordering basics on an almost weekly basis, designing and ordering gowns, fittings, giving the seamstresses instructions and more. There is never a shortage of things to do each day!

I’m sure! Who has time for hobbies when running a business and a home, right? Well, actually, I do have a hobby that I love. I am a runner. I started running about 8 years ago and I love the energy it gives me. So far, the longest distance I’ve run was a half marathon. I love being outdoors, and run outside in winter, spring, summer and fall!

Wow, that’s really impressive! And from what I hear, you’re not complacent about letting things just stay the same with your business and willing to pursue bigger and better. Tell me about the big change that’s coming to Ruthie’s? Yes, we’re very excited to share the news! With a lot of thought and consideration, we have decided to rename Ruthie’s. The name Ruthie’s holds a lot of value, thanks to Ruthie Saloff the original owner. She built up a beautiful store in the heart of Monsey along with hundreds of loyal customers. We thank Hashem every day that we were given this opportunity. When we first bought the store, we didn’t want to change the name, as it was a successful store and we were learning the ropes. It was scary enough to make such a huge investment - we didn’t want to rock the status quo by changing the name. But now that it has been over four years since we own the store, we are comfortable and well-established. The time has come for us to rename it. We want to make the store more personal for us. (But don’t worry, I’ll still answer you if you call me Ruthie!!)

And the new name is? We are changing the name to…(Drumroll please)…Monarch!!

What a beautiful name, tell me how you came up with it. We wanted a name that signified beauty. Monarch is the name of a species of butterfly. It’s the kind of name that you can picture in your mind right away. The shape and the vibrant colors are things that attract girls from a young age, and even as young girls get older, they never outgrow loving the butterfly or their desire for beautiful things. We also chose the name because it means royalty and we had in mind the pasuk “Kol Kevuda Bas Melech Penima”. We really pride ourselves on bringing in affordable clothing that doesn’t need shells or added fabric to lengthen hems! We want to provide beautiful tznius clothing that you can easily enjoy!

Are there any other changes coming along with the name change? When we bought the store 4 years ago, we updated the kind of clothing we brought in, so that they are not only tznius, but fun and fashionable as well. If you haven’t been to the store in the last few years, you should definitely come check it out. We also have an amazing staff at Ruthie’s. Anyone who is a frequent shopper knows Monica. Once you meet her, she gets to know you and will remember you and the type of clothing you like. Lilly is also great at finding what you need- she knows where everything is in the store. Both Monica and Lilly have been with Ruthie’s for many years! You can always find Deena at the register, ringing customers up and organizing incoming inventory, stock and labels. And of course the 2 Rivkis: my daughter, Rivki, and longtime Monsey resident, Rivky Glatzer, have joined me and handle many aspects of the gowns department. As for me, I’m all over the store!! Also, our on-site seamstresses will fix anything and everything you need to make your purchases a perfect fit. None of that is changing.

I understand you’re hosting a celebration to mark this exciting change. Can you give us the details? Yes! We’d like to invite all our customers and soon-to-be customers to join us for our renaming celebration to take place I”H on Sunday, February 20 from 12-3 at 48 Route 59 in the Monsey Hub. We will have Gift Card giveaways, Free slice of Pizza from Yummy’s with every $25 purchase, Photo Magnets printed on the spot and more. For any questions, we can be reached at 845-356-0009. We are looking forward to personally greeting you and hope that Monarch will always serve as your go-to shopping choice!

Out the Window BY: MALK A NEWMANN

It was 8:12 p.m., which meant that it was a total of 87 minutes since I’d first entered my crib. To be fair, I wasn’t actually sitting in a crib. But there are crib rails extending along the full width of our very tiny nursery, and I was sitting crammed in a teninch space between my one- and two-and-a-half-year-old angels as they peacefully drifted — um, no. In truth, my head was literally vibrating on the window behind me as my monkeys jumped, bounced, sang, shouted, spun, asked and begged — anything but sleep. Ten minutes later, the crisis deepened. Now, here’s a trick question: What’s worse than two kids acting out at bedtime? One kid. Because when one sleeps while the other is up, the aforementioned child’s long-prayed-for sleep is in a

Had I really gone nuts? One gaze out the window and down the four-story drop confirmed my suspicions. Yup, I had. I quickly blabbed some pathetic cover-up — “Oh yes, down there is where all the bottles live, and your bottle really, really needed his

Long COVID: post-COVID Syndrome What is Long COVID? What happens when COVID symptoms don’t go away? For most people, mild to moderate COVID symptoms of fatigue, body aches, sweating and even headaches go away after 2 weeks. However, in some people who recover from COVID, persistent health problems can wreak havoc for months. This is called Long COVID or shortly “Long-Haulers” (ie people who do not clear COVID symptoms out of their system). What are the signs of lingering COVID in your body (> 8 weeks after first infection)? According to the CDC, the most common lasting symptoms are tiredness, shortness of breath, cough, joint pain and chest pain. Other issues include mental problems such as difficulty concentrating (brain fog), depression, headaches, rapid heartbeat and even difficult sleeping.

Treatment of Long-term COVID Still feeling tired or having trouble focusing two months after your COVID infection? IV hydration or a Vitamin infusion may help you recover faster. IV Fluids drip: Hydration is essential for the immune system to function properly and help our bodies to recover from illness. IV hydration can provide your body with an efficient way to replenish, restore and detoxify. IV hydration can help reduce body aches, mental fog and general fatigue. Hydration with IV fluids is provided via intravenous drip as treatment for fluid loss in which a sterile water solution containing small amounts of salt or sugar drips directly into the patient’s bloodstream. IV Vitamin Drip: Current medical literature suggests that high doses of Vitamin C by infusion may reduce the lingering inflammation in the body after COVID infection. In addition, intravenous Vitamin C might cool down other persistent COVID related immune responses that may result in the symptoms of Long COVID. Vitamin B complex might improve neurological symptoms of Long COVID such as brain fog and difficult sleeping. (Frontiers in Immunology 11:574029) IV drip infusion with Vitamin C or Vitamin B supplements has anti-inflammatory effects and may balance the immune system response. Our state-of-the-art infusion center is staffed with experienced medical providers who can administer your IV hydration and high dose Vitamin C or B infusion in a clean, safe, and monitored environment. Helping you get back on your feet after COVID with a high standard of care is our goal. Walk of Shame BY: DA SSI LE VI

It starts out as an innocent stroll to the grocery. With me are my two fifteenmonth-old toddlers, scrubbed, fresh and adorable, if I may say so myself, duly strapped into five-point harnesses. And then one little guy gets impatient. Wriggle, wriggle, mischievous giggle… hands are free! “Here’s a bottle,” I beg, as he continues to wriggle his waist out of the strap. “Drink!” He drinks. For five seconds. Then he hurls the bottle to the floor, and as I bend down to retrieve it, he deftly climbs onto the hood, and... bam! The stroller tips backward. Frightened wails. A bruised little cheek. Sand-covered shorts. A traumatized brother stuck in the harness. I lift my fallen son, hold him tight as I straighten the double

I finally strap my runaway rascal back into his seat. The howls start, so I put a snack bag into each one’s hand. They protest — loudly. Noooo, they don’t want flutes. Some more faces turn in my direction. They want... the crumbliest, gooiest things from my bag. Here you go. Whatever it takes to keep the peace. I stroll on, hot and uncomfortable, mud stains on my skirt and blood stains on my top, as my kids litter the sidewalks with Bamba and cookie crumbs. The carriage becomes a crumb receptacle, their faces are smeared, but I walk, walk, walk. Another five minutes... I think through a clenched brain. The whining starts again. I’m detecting a wriggle. Here, a bottle. “Juice!” But no, not what he had in

the puddle? Not this little guy! Wriggle, wriggle, giggle… free! He gets up on the seat bar, hands gripping the hood with glee, and jumps. Wriggle, wriggle, giggle... free! They’re jumping in tandem now, and one of my hands is on the handlebar, maneuvering this bulky, bouncing stroller, while the other hand is holding on to these dear boys (moms of twins learn a lot of tricks) so they don’t fall. Some passersby eye me strangely. Others get a kick out of it. I see the grocery store in sight. I make a run for it. I park my dirty stroller and bring my dirty, dripping kids and self into the grocery store. I shepherd them right up to one of those defective wagons that only moms of two tiny tots know about — the kind that have bars missing on either side and can accommodate four little legs. I turn around to grab the wagon. I turn back and, “Where did they go?!” Oh, there’s one, some twenty feet to my right. I scurry in that direction, but there’s squealing some thirty feet at my left and... I’m torn. Who to get first? I run through the millisecond calculation of which side is more danger-

ous — steps or outdoor access or strangers. I scoop one up and run in the other direction in a panic. But guy number two has vanished. And there I am running and craning my neck, a disheveled mom holding a kicking, screaming, tantruming, dirty toddler in her arm, terrified for my son on the loose. I head to customer service, and there’s my son — redfaced and screaming, being held by the arms by a woman dressed to perfection shaking her head back and forth, her face disapproving. “You should not leave a kid this age out of sight for a mil lisecond,” she says through pursed lips. I nod, willing away the tears threatening to gather at the corner of my eyes. I look pathetic enough without red eyes! Beaten, with a whining kid in each arm whom I no longer even hear, I do the walk of shame back to the stroller. No, not the wagon. I need to get home — now. I hope there will be a taxi driver taking us in with all the dirt we come along with. And as I try to see who my shaliach from Heaven will be, a woman passes me, softness on her face and something in her eyes. “I know how impossible this is,” she says quietly. “Don’t let people make you feel bad when you’re doing so much good.” And she gestures to two sweet same-sized girls who seem to be way past the stage of so brutally stripping their mother of her entire ego. Now I can no longer stop the tears. I surreptitiously wipe my eyes and I know that I’ll get over it.

Tales of a Tiny Tyrant BY: SIMA ROSEN

Being an only boy in a female-blessed family must be difficult. And being a very powerful, very bright, very adorable, very lovable, very reactive, very aggressive only boy? Difficult for the child, challenging for the mother.

With energy far surpassing his age, both mattresses are shoved onto the floor, and the bedding gets yanked off and messed up. My innards clench tighter and tighter, and feelings of inadequacy wash over me in a shameful wave. Am I raising a boundaryless monster? Am I so ill-equipped to do this parenting thing? I’ve got no fight left in me. I am so done. But Shloimy is not, and he hits and pinches and bites all in sight. I’m hovering in freefall, choking in helpless paralysis. What to do? Rescue my poor children from their brother’s wrath? Hide? Discipline my little tyrant? (Yeah, right!) I’m a defenseless ant scurrying out of the mighty giant’s reach, and my powerlessness is so frightening. I closet myself into the bathroom to get my bearings. Bad move. BrightEyed and BushyTailed BY: MIREL DISKIND

My son is four and a half years old, and his brother two and a half, when I am confined to a few weeks of bedrest. Day after day, all summer long, sheer helplessness is all I know. How to resolve a fight taking place downstairs? (You don’t.) How to take care of the house, the dust, the shopping? (You don’t, and don’t, and don’t.) How to attack the mountains of laundry growing at an alarming pace? (You teach your better half everything about casual and delicate, and order detergent pods.) My kids are passed around from aunt to aunt in the afternoons, and I sit home tight, hoping that, wherever they are, they aren’t running into the road, don’t have access to a pool. Early one bright sunny morning, the kids are in adventurous spirits. Still in pjs and teddy bear slippers, the two bushy-tailed little

people sneak down the stairs. To their mother, their muffled giggles sound more and more ominous with every passing moment. “Ari!” I call. “Moishy! Where are you going?” Some more giggles, and the quick pitter-patter of feet. “Come back!” I holler. “Hey, come back!” There is quiet, and then the quick snap of the screen door. Uh-oh. Heart beating fast in my chest, I sit up and grab the nearby cordless. I dial my husband, but there’s no answer. He’s probably davening Shacharis, I know. I try once, twice, again, just to be sure, but the call still goes to his voicemail.

By now the terror is rising to my chest. What to do? My maternal instincts are screaming for me to run, yell, do something! But I am so horribly, painfully stuck. From the window near my bed I hear snatches of very familiar giggles, but the sounds are growing ever fainter. I quickly lean over to look outside. And there they are! All the way… across the street. My aunt lives a few doors down on the other side of the street, and for some reason, the kids have decided it’s a great time to visit. They don’t even bother knocking in; they content themselves with prancing around on the driveway, like two colts enjoying the open outdoors. It’s early, too early, but what’s a mother to do? I dial my aunt’s house. Within a few minutes, the kids, tail between their legs, are led back across the street by my uncle, who shepherds them inside and firmly locks the door. Nearly weeping with relief, all I want to do is gather them into my arms, feel their hearts beating safely near mine. But I’m still stuck in my room, and the kids? They’re already off on their next great adventure.

Egging Each Other On BY: BAIL A EHRENFELD

I wait for the very last minute to dress my boys in their brand-new white suits, pristine and pressed in honor of my sister’s wedding. I pull every piece of clothing onto their energetic selves — no small feat — and settle them on the couch with some books while I run into my bedroom to get myself ready for the big night.

Yellow splatters cover their hair, their white linen suits, their new Shabbos shoes. My furniture. My pale pink carpet. The fabric couch. Not an inch was spared the glory. I take in the sight in a daze. Faintly, I back away to spare my dress, and what happens next is a blur. Did I berate them? Stamp my feet and yell? Who was the one who came to babysit these two rambunctious boys who were soon bathed and sleeping in their pajamas while my husband and I attended the wedding? When did I get to scrub the house? Were the suits even salvageable? The absolute trauma of the moment has made me forget. But I will never remember the sight of the yellow splatters ruining my sparkling plans. And I never left a case of eggs out in the open again.

WEEK 1 OF A 4-WEEK SERIES

MANAGING THE OVERWHELM By: Gelly Asovski, LCSW-R, RPT-S

A 2018 study by Welch’s juice company found that mothers work two and a half times as much as is required in a typical full-time job. According to the study, the average mother works from 6:23 a.m. to 8:31 p.m., with under two hours of free time during the day. The statistics also showed that mothers work a fourteen-hour shift on a daily basis. It’s no wonder that mothers are overwhelmed! Mothers of little kids are really amazing. Taking care of our precious kinderlach is a labor of love that can leave us feeling very stressed and exhausted at times. Children literally rely on their mother for survival. Breakfast, lunch, supper and in between, it’s all on Mommy. Dressing the kids, bathing the kids, feeding the kids, playing with the kids... again, it’s all on Mommy. Mothers, with mesirus nefesh, are also the ones getting up for the baby in the middle of the night, and they are also responsible for keeping the house clean and washing the laundry, along with all the countless other tasks of running a household. 202

Overall, mothers are entrusted with the huge achrayus of attending to the physical and emotional needs of our children, as well as with their ruchnius. When the going gets tough, we can all use some chizuk to get through the day’s challenges and focus on what’s really important: our beautiful children. Nowadays, the work-life balance is more complex than ever before, and so

many mothers work out of the home. As a child and family therapist, I have dedicated my life to helping children and families heal with the best therapies available in a heimish setting. As a registered play therapy supervisor and EMDR consultant, my goal is always to help stressed out, struggling mothers go from overwhelmed to playful, connected parents because that makes everything so much better. When we’re overwhelmed, the first task is to stop the overwhelm! Then we can focus on ways to be the happy mothers we truly want to be. Sometimes the answer lies in working on our mindset as the mother, and rearranging our schedules to make life manageable. Sometimes it’s about remembering to do more self-care so we can give our children what they need without feeling resentful. I truly believe there is a way for mothers to feel good about raising our beautiful families.

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, WE CAN ALL USE SOME CHIZUK AND TO GET THROUGH THE DAY’S CHALLENGES AND FOCUS ON WHAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT: OUR BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN.

It’s important to know that taking small baby steps consistently to reduce overwhelm really works in the long run. Here are ten tips to cut down the overwhelm in your life and feel good about being a mommy:

1.

CREATE A SUPPORT SYSTEM. Surround yourself with people who care about you and what’s going on in your life. Your friends and family can be a lifeline when you’re raising young children. Don’t underestimate the value of finding a support system. Reach out to people who understand what you’re going through, who can laugh and cry with you as you do your best to raise your family.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH.

Get help from a mentor or therapist, or take a parenting course. There’s no shame in taking care of your mental or emotional emotional health. If you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, postpartum issues or childhood trauma, help is available. The right help can make a huge difference in reducing your overwhelm as a mother.

SELF-CARE IS CRITICAL

to being a healthy, good mommy! My advice is to put aside ten minutes a day to do something nice for yourself that says, “I matter as a person.” Many mothers get stuck in thinking they never have their own time to do anything, and that thought overwhelms them further. Doing little things for yourself will help you have the koach to continue parenting with love and connection. Remember, ten plus ten plus ten will add up to give you the energy you need to be the amazing mother you want to be!

JOURNALING DAILY

or several times a week really makes a difference and can help soothe jangled nerves at the end of the day. I personally have used journaling to help me cope through parenting challenges and have found it really helpful. Nowadays gratitude journals are in style — and I love it! My personal daily gratitude has always been thanking Hashem for washing machines because I can’t imagine what life would be like if I needed to schlep to the river to wash clothing.

5.

WALK DAILY.

Don’t treat exercise as an allor-nothing prospect. A brisk ten-minute walk around the corner works just fine, as long as it’s consistent. A little movement and some fresh air can make a world of a difference and reduce stress. You can take your

kids along if you can’t go alone, and then it will become an activity to enjoy together. Jumping jacks and dancing in the kitchen reduce stress and allow everyone to release energy instead of fighting with each other.

6.

DO ONE THING A DAY TO EXPRESS LOVE TO YOUR CHILDREN. A smile, a hug, a posi-

tive compliment… these really go a long way if done on a daily basis. Your child needs this love just as they need food and shelter. It’s a real mindset shift, and it makes a world of difference. Happier kids don’t act out as much, and that definitely reduces overwhelm!

7.

ACCESS THE POWER OF VISUALIZATION. So

many times, when we’re overwhelmed and at the end of our rope, we get stuck in worst-case scenarios in our heads. Our brains send us depressing messages that things will never change and that there is no hope. Visualization can help us tap into creating a new narrative — one that is hopeful. It shines the spotlight on seeing our precious children for who they really are, and doesn’t just focus on the challenges of raising them.

INSTRUCTIONS:

4. Send positive energy and love to both yourself and your children, from your heart to their hearts. 5. Believe that things will change for the better!

8.

SEEK CONNECTION WITH YOUR CHILDREN. Focus on what brings connection, not

disconnection, in your day-to-day interactions with your yummy kinderlach. If you see your children as the source of your problems, they will be your problems. Look for opportunities to connect with them through love, nurture and play. Work on finding the two-minute, five-minute and ten-minute opportunities where you can do something fun with your kids.

9. 10.

BY: CHAYA BLUSTEIN Before I had my first baby, my reaction to baby gear discussions went something like, “Aren’t these strollers all the same?” I couldn’t see any major differences between the brands of equipment I saw mothers around me sporting. But once it was me behind the handlebar of a stroller, boy did I know how every little feature could mean a completely new experience in taking care of a baby. When I was the one pushing a baby around all day, how well the wheels rolled mattered. That’s how I became slightly obsessed with baby equipment, to the point of asking other mothers at the babysitter’s door if I could try out their stroller because its movement appeared so smooth, and interrogating baby store employees for hours about every high chair function and stroller feature. Suddenly, there was a lot to explore.

Bugaboo Lynx WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: Bugaboo strollers are known for their durability and pushing ease, but many of them, like the Fox, are also very big and somewhat clumsy. With the introduction of the Lynx, Bugaboo solved that issue. The Lynx is narrower and lighter than many other full-size strollers, which makes it even easier to wheel and bump up steps. Best yet, it folds with the seat attached. Another plus is that the bassinet is sold separately, so if you want only the stroller piece, you’ll find cheaper packages available.

CON: Reclining the seat requires two hands. PRICE: Starting at: $899

WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: If you want lots of storage space and a stroller known for quality and strength, UPPAbaby Cruz is a fabulous choice. It’s easy to recline the seat, and it also comes with an adjustable leg rest. No matter the position of the seat, the stroller is easy to push and maneuver. This is a stroller built to last through constant wear and lots of use.

CON: This is a heavy stroller, which you feel every time you need to fold it or go up steps.

UPPAbaby Cruz PRICE: Starting at: $650

Mockingbird WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: When I met a friend in a baby store wheeling this stroller, I just had to ask her about it. She loves that her stroller wheels beautifully and has plenty of room in the seat to move around plus a huge storage basket. Many of its qualities, including the single-to-double feature, compare to the UPPAbaby Vista V2. But this is a full-size stroller with a difference: an affordable price tag. Check out its bottom line.

CON: Once folded, the stroller is bulky (bulkier than the Vista) and hard to fit into small spaces.

PRICE: Starting at: $395

Silver Cross Comet Eclipse WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: With its accompanying Baby Nest, a soft piece that attaches to your regular seat, this stroller is super comfortable for a newborn baby without requiring a separate bassinet piece. This stroller also boasts hardy wheels and easy pushing, which are important features in full-size strollers.

CON: The Silver Cross Comet Eclipse comes in one color only: black. It does have pretty rose-gold accents, though.

PRICE: Starting at: $849

Mima Xari WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: The Mima Xari definitely has a uniquely striking design. Its leatherette fabrics come in many colors and can be wiped clean instead of the usually required washing. One feature exclusive to this stroller is the bassinet piece that unzips out of the inside of the seat, so it’s easier than ever to switch between the seat and the bassinet. That’s pretty convenient when your baby is at the stage where he still sleeps best in a bassinet, but likes to look around when he’s awake.

CON: The zipped-in bassinet makes the seat less spacious, which may make a bigger toddler uncomfortable. PRICE: Starting at: $1,400

Cybex Eezy S Twist WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: It’s the only travel stroller I’ve seen that has both the parent-facing and the forward-facing options. When your baby’s still really tiny and you want to see him at all times, or if your baby just likes to see his mommy, this option is a useful feature. Another reason to choose Cybex strollers is their great customer service. I’ve heard from customers who got replacement pieces with no hassle from the company.

CON: This is a travel stroller, so the wheels are small. That makes it harder to push.

PRICE: Starting at: $189

WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: Well, every car-owner loves the Doona because what could be more convenient than having your car seat become your stroller? Even if you don’t own a car, many people find it useful to have a Doona around for use in taxis, trains and buses, and even on airplanes (if there are empty seats to rest it on.) People also love that it’s so tiny and doesn’t take up a lot of room in a store.

CON: The Doona is a car seat. It isn’t advised to leave babies in that position for longer than two hours, so the Doona is not convenient for long trips.

PRICE: Starting at: $500

Joolz Aer WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: If you want a lightweight stroller but don’t feel like compromising on things like a reclining option and a roomy seat for your toddler, try the Joolz Aer. It’s a high-quality stroller that has a one-hand compact fold, is light and easy to maneuver, and it’s still strong enough that it won’t tip as soon as you attach a bag to the handlebar. When a full-size stroller isn’t an option for you, the Joolz gives you quality in a smaller version.

CON: The price tag is high for a travel stroller. PRICE: Starting at: $399

WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: When I first laid eyes on this stroller, my reaction was, “I didn’t know double strollers can look so good!” Looks aside, this double stroller is lighter than other doubles and folds easily, too. Wheeling a double usually means having a hard time getting through doorways, but even with two seats, this stroller is narrow enough to resolve that issue. It also comes with a bassinet option.

CON: The Valco Baby doesn’t come with air-filled tires, which makes it harder to push on uneven ground.

Baby Jogger City Bistro WHY I LOVE THIS HIGH CHAIR: This is a cushioned chair that’s designed to be comfortable for your baby at every stage, as you can adjust its height. The cloth insert is machine washable, and you can fold the high chair for storage. It also comes with a large tray and is an all-around quality piece. CON: When opened, the chair takes up a lot of space.

Cosco Simple Fold WHY I LOVE THIS HIGH CHAIR: Many high chairs are heavy to move around, even with wheels. This one is narrow and lightweight, taking up less room even when it’s out. But it also has the option of folding up, which makes it a super space-saver for small kitchens. CON: This is not a very sturdy high chair.

OBSESSIVE THINKING Shia came into my office with his 17 year old son, Yehuda. “For years, we’ve tried all kinds of tutors,” he shared, “but nothing worked. Yehuda can’t focus on his learning. We don’t know what else to do.” Through various methods and techniques, I saw that Yehuda was holding a lot of unprocessed guilt, shame and fear in his body. I realized that in order to help him, we needed to do the work to balance his (unprocessed) emotions which had all gone to his head. Many times someone will come into my office complaining of non-stop racing thoughts. “I can’t focus on what I need to focus on in my business,” he will say, for example. He’ll share that his business is growing and he has the potential to increase sales but he finds himself focusing on unimportant details instead of what he needs to be focusing on. He can be on vacation, in shul, at supper with his family and he’s thinking and worrying, worrying and obsessing. He has no peace because there’s always something else to worry about. This is never a way to live but mostly it’s not until the problem gets so distressing that the person will end up in my office desperate for a solution.

COMING BACK TO BITE US Nevertheless, unprocessed emotions never simply disappear. When an individual so completely disconnects from his feelings, his body gets physically tight and his consciousness ends up in his mind in the form of obsessive thinking. Obsessive thinking means thinking and worrying about anything and everything, big and small, things that may make a difference to one’s life but most often things that are meaningless to one’s life. The difference between obsessing and rational thinking is the constancy and out of control feeling one has when they’re obsessing. Their minds become like a runaway train, just racing on and on without brakes.

Their minds become like a runaway train, just racing on and on without brakes.

As with many clients, often the problem is sourced in childhood. Perhaps as a child, he was not allowed to express his feelings or when he did express them, he was told they were silly or to stop making a big deal out of nothing. He might have been mocked for his feelings, he might have been invalidated for his feelings, his feelings might have been totally ignored. In any case, he learned early on that feelings or, at least, expressing feelings was bad and the best way forward was either to deny he had any or to make sure not to tell anybody about them. In time, he may have been so successful at suppressing feelings that he completely lost touch with them.

Yossi was a kollel yungerman and father of a large family. He told me that he was having a hard time giving his wife and his children attention. He wanted to be a better husband and father but he found that his mind was constantly flying all over the place. He couldn’t concentrate long enough to sit down with his son and learn with him at night. He couldn’t connect with his children at the Shabbos table because his mind was always on some worry or another. Through our work together, Yossi came to realize that the reason for his racing mind was because his emotions weren’t properly in place. He had a lot of undigested fear locked in his body that he

was afraid to look at. All that displaced energy was going to his head and manifesting in obsessive worrying. His racing thoughts were crowding out his ability to focus on the important people in his life.

when we cannot emotionally tolerate being in our bodies, we will attempt to escape. Whether it’s through addictions or obsessive thinking.

It wasn’t easy for him but Yossi pushed through and, finally, through hard work, we got him to the point where he was able to look at his feelings and process them. Once that happened and his emotions were more balanced, his conscious mind was able to quiet down and he was able to focus much more on his wife and children.

old, unprocessed emotions which usually include, fear, shame and guilt. Only when we do the work of balancing our emotions, will we feel resilient and learn to be comfortable with ourselves, in our bodies. Only then will our distressing obsessive thinking and worrying symptoms fall away allowing us to experience peace of mind and wholesome relationships.

THE CORE ISSUE The fact is, when we cannot emotionally tolerate being in our bodies, we will attempt to escape. Whether it’s through addictions or obsessive thinking or any other dysfunctional behavior, the core issue is the same; our fear of looking at

Strapping baby snugly into a car seat before riding off may take a couple of moments, but they are moments you don’t want to miss! Time for Innovation 1930s: The World’s First Baby Seats Early car seats were initially intended to restrain children while the car was in motion — with no relation to safety! Parents wanted their kids to be at the right height to look out the window and to basically stay in one spot. The LATCH System The Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children system was developed to make it easier to install car seats. Nearly all cars made since 2002 are equipped for LATCH use.

Crash! Test Car seats must go through a crash test in order to meet federal safety standards. To conduct the test, the car seat is strapped to the center of a bench seat, and a frontal crash of 30 mph is simulated. The seat receives either a pass or a fail. The test is conducted twice — once when the seat is secured by a lap belt, and once when the LATCH system is used.

Along came some concerned parents, and… the world of car safety seats for kids took a drastic twist. Car seats for safety could be attributed to two different designers who came up with the idea at about the same time. Jean Helen Ames, a British mom, thought up the concept of a five-strap safety harness because she wanted to keep her son safe while driving. She filed a patent for what she named “the Jeenay car seat” (after herself!) in London in 1965. Around then, Denver businessman Leonard Rivkin designed an iron-framed booster seat with a similar harness system. His idea came about after his car was struck from behind and his child went flying from the back seat.

A Seat for Every Age The CDC recommends using car seats until a child is at least nine years old, following this scale:

0–2 years: Rear-facing car seat 2–5 years: Forward-facing car seat 5–9 years: Booster seat 9–12 years: As soon as the car’s seat belt fits a child

properly, they can sit without a booster seat. Until age twelve, children should sit in the back of the car only.

It may not go bad the way a bottle of milk or box of cereal does, but you may have noticed an expiration date on your car seat. The plastic may wear down, replacement parts may become unavailable, and in general, the Safety Commission would like to see you replace your child’s baby seat by the time the expiration date nears — or six years after its date of manufacture.

Beware of Imitations! As part of a 2019 investigation into counterfeit baby products sold online, CNN purchased a Doona car seat stroller. It was marked with Doona’s original branding exactly. The only difference was the price. Sure enough, the seat failed to meet the basic U.S. safety standards and crashed into pieces on impact during the 30 mph crash test.

Installation 101 While many parents believe they’ve connected their baby’s seat properly, the stats show otherwise.

96%

of parents believe their car seats are installed properly, but…

59% of car seats are NOT installed properly. (NHTSA Report, 2016)

• Parents are half as likely to strap their children into appropriate driving gear when taking a ride in someone else’s car. • NYS offers education on how to properly connect car seats by certified child passenger safety technicians at fitting stations around the state. • The NYS fine for car seat violation is between $50 and $100 and up to three points. • More and more parents have been using car seats: 1999:

15%

2008:

80%

2013:

91%

• Tennessee was the first state to regulate the Child Restraint aka Car Seat Law, 1979. • The first federal law mandating that all cars be equipped with seat belts was passed in 1968.

MISASKIM - SPARKS IN THE DARK New York - Misaskim is about to launch a 36-hour campaign to raise $1,500,00 for the aveilim, almanos and yesomim in the community. But… Almanos and yesomim? Misaskim? Misaskim is only about shiva, aren’t they? Not quite so. Long after the shiva signs, chairs, and covers have been removed, Project Yedid of Misaskim steadfastly remains at their sides. Throughout the year, Misaskim showers the almanos and yesomim with heartwarming sparks. Sparks of support, sparks of comfort, sparks of relief. School supplies. Yom Tov meals. Yom Tov packages. Chol Hamoed events. Camp packages. A simcha fund. An emergency fund. For the almanos and yesomim, each spark feels like a giant hug, making them feel embraced, cared for, and remembered.

Rayim is excited to announce the opening of a

This is in addition to the services people are more familiar with; the shiva services (with warehouses in 10 neighborhoods), meisei mitzvah and more. These incredible services amount to an annual budget of four million dollars! At Misaskim, the responsibility is enormous, especially since they do not receive government funding. The budget is rising drastically as more families are unfortunately added to the list. The 36-hour campaign will be starting on Wednesday, February 23rd, and will be live until Thursday, February 24th, at midnight. There are 3,100 almanos and yesomim who anxiously await Project Yedid’s life-changing services. Will you help Misaskim generate those sparks? They cannot do it without you. To be part of this vital mission, visit charidy.com/misaskim or call 718.540.5741
