ROOM TO DREAM.
Now that the neighbors moved
SPACE HACK
A low-backed, fluid form couch gave all the seating room needed, without the clunkiness.
DESIGN POINTER
When the client wanted to pull off a bar in his dining room, we were short on space. Instead, we used the bar as a room divider.
FUN FACT: The photo shoot was done outdoors, because we wanted to focus entirely on the furniture pieces, removing the walls and distractions that are so commonly associated with interior design.
ROOM TO GROW.
in, here’s how it all happened. COLOR STORY
This chair was originally chosen in a vibrant pink, but our client swapped it for a more monochromatic look.
SWAPPING THINGS
© Accentuations x Hello Writing
It was a brilliant move to swap the large dining area for a larger living area, creating a family room for a client that’s no longer hosting.

(Re: Harvesting Our Crop, Issue 282) In a recent issue, I read about a child who was, baruch Hashem, doing well despite the diagnosis of celiac disease. It was heartwarming to hear that she got better and went on to build a family of her own. I do want to point out that the credit for saving her life should’ve been given to the Ribbono Shel Olam. The doctor was just a shaliach and had no ability to save a person’s life. We must always look upward to the Creator for healing and thank Him when a life is saved! L.Z.

(Re: The Loss, Issue 281) I read the story about the man who decided not to fight in order to win the din Torah, but instead accepted the loss so he could gain the peace of knowing another person does not hold a grudge against him. I salute the protagonist and the strength his sacrifice took. I want to mention, though, what a dayan of a beis din once told me. When there’s a disagreement, he encourages the two parties to try to settle out of beis din first and do whatever it takes to reach a compromise without having to bring the matter to the dayanim. Of course, beis din is here for a reason and absolutely should be used when needed,

IN PURSUIT OF FULLER FILLETS (Re: Simple Suppers, Issue 280) I want to preface my question with a long-overdue thank you. Aside from really enjoying every single edition of The Monsey View with its informative and inspiring material, I have also tried and enjoyed many of the featured recipes. In fact, when I recently rewrote my Pesach cooking cards, I noticed that three-quarters of the recipes were straight out of The Monsey View. Considering that we barely use any processed ingredients over yom tov, that is truly incredible! I recently tried the fish and chips recipe that was featured a few weeks ago, and it was unanimously voted delicious by adults and children alike! But I do have one question: Is there any way to keep the fillets from shrinking so much? It would certainly enhance the presentation if the fillets would retain their original size. Keep up your amazing publication! Y.K. MIRIAM PESSY WERCBERGER RESPONDS: We are so thrilled that you enjoy our recipes. Nothing makes our work more worthwhile than readers bringing us into their kitchens. Unfortunately, when raw protein is cooked on high heat, it shrinks in size. Lots of moisture evaporates in the boiling process. You can try experimenting with lower temperatures for less shrinkage.

PARSHAS YISRO Reaching for the Peak
It wasn’t the tallest nor the most splendid of mountains. In fact, Har Sinai barely made it to the list of finalists vying for the privilege of the Torah being given on its peak. Yet Hakadosh Baruch Hu specifically selected Har Sinai as the site for Matan Torah on account of its notable modesty, imparting the message that anavah, humility, is a prerequisite for growth in Torah. Now the question begs to be asked: If Hashem was looking for a particularly humble spot to rest His Shechinah, why consider a mountain at all? Why not go directly to the valleys and give the Torah there?

“I AM STRUGGLING WITH GAAVAH,” a bachur told his rebbe. “I know it’s not a good middah, and I’m looking for a way to strengthen myself. Perhaps the Rebbe has an idea how I can cleanse these feelings from my heart?” The rebbe listened and advised the bachur to take a seat. “Wait here in my room for a couple of minutes. Soon I will explain.” There were many visitors waiting to speak with the rebbe. Some came with problems, others with questions, and each one left his personal audience uplifted, his burden lightened. The first to enter the rebbe’s room was a financially-challenged Yid. “I need to marry off my daughter, but I haven’t got even the minimal funds,” he wept. “Rebbe, I don’t know where to begin!” The rebbe turned to the bachur and said, “Please, give this poor man three hundred rubles so he could marry off his daughter.” The bachur was caught by surprise and stammered, “I don’t have anything to my name, not even a penny!” The rebbe gave the man some advice, and he left the room after thanking the rebbe profusely. Next to enter was a local talmid chacham. He had a complicated halachic shailah to discuss with the rebbe. He had sweated over the issue for a while and was waiting for the rebbe to shed some clarity on the problem. “Explain the matter to this bachur here,” the rebbe said, pointing toward the boy in the room. “He will probably be able to answer.” The bachur was bewildered and nearly jumped out of his seat. “But, Rebbe, I’ve barely had a chance to learn! There’s no way I’d be able to solve the problem of such a talmid chacham!” The rebbe proceeded to listen to the man’s question and considered all angles before issuing his brilliant psak. The man left the room astounded by the clear-cut solution he received. The next in the string of petitioners was a businessman who came to ask the rebbe’s opinion on his investments and business deals. Once again, the rebbe turned to the boy and said, “Nu, give him a good, helpful idea.” “I don’t understand business,” the bachur replied meekly. He
Anavah is to be a mountain, yet to continue being humble.
DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND
was slowly getting even more wary of this setup. What was the rebbe driving at? He didn’t need to wait long. As soon as the businessman left the room, the rebbe turned to his talmid and said, “It’s really strange! You say you aren’t wealthy, you haven’t had a chance to learn yet, and you don’t understand business. Why, then, do you need an eitzah for gaavah? What do you have that is worth bragging about?” * * * * * It should be no big deal to remain humble when one has no special attributes to his name, the rebbe was pointing out. That is called being realistic. When does true anavah come to play? When a person does have qualities to boast of, yet chooses to behave in a modest way. The Kotzker Rebbe explains that this is precisely the reason the Torah was given on a small mountain rather than in a valley. Anavah is to be a mountain, yet to continue being humble. Recognize your qualities, accept the accolades, but remember that remaining humble despite the applause is a precondition to growth in Torah.

Did You Know? The mountains Tavor and Carmel crossed the water, coming to Sinai simply to witness and take part in Matan Torah. The Gemara infers that if Tavor and Carmel, who came to learn Torah for a short time, are located in Eretz Yisroel, then the batei midrash in chutz la’aretz, where Torah is learned and disseminated regularly, will certainly merit relocating to Eretz Yisroel when Moshiach comes.

State Attorney General Hammers Cuomo for Severe Undercount in Nursing Home Deaths Governor Andrew Cuomo may finally be facing the music for thousands of COVID-related nursing home deaths, after a 76-page report by Attorney General Letitia James found that actual deaths may be double the number previously reported by Albany. According to the report, the state undercounted nursing home–related coronavirus deaths by as much as 50%, with Cuomo having ordered nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients and those who were suspected of having the virus, reported Fox News. The report also alleged that thousands of nursing home patients died statewide after contracting the virus last spring, but that previously released state data only reflected those who died in nursing homes without accounting for nursing home patients who contracted COVID-19 and later died after being transferred to hospitals. The New York State Department of Health had reported 5,957 confirmed COVID-19 deaths and 2,783 deaths that were presumed to be coronavirus-related as of January 27, but information that the attorney general’s office obtained directly from nursing homes showed significantly higher numbers. In one instance, state figures showed eleven confirmed and presumed COVID-19 deaths at one facility, while forty confirmed and presumed deaths were reported to the attorney general’s office by the same facility. The report, which examined data from 62 nursing homes, also charged that forcing facilities to accept COVID-19 patients may have put other patients in danger, and that both an insufficient supply of personal protective equipment and failure to comply with infection control protocols may have further compounded the problem. A defensive response released one day later by New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker put the number of confirmed and presumed deaths at nursing homes at 12,743, slightly lower than the 13,000 figure cited in Attorney General James’ report. Requests to obtain data from the state on nursing home deaths filed under the state’s Freedom of Information Law in September have yet to be filled, leaving the DOH facing serious criticism. State Senator James Skoufis, chairman of the Senate’s investigations committee, had threatened to file a subpoena for the information last week, saying it was “downright insulting … that six months later, the DOH is continuing to stonewall us on basic questions.” Multiple lawmakers took Cuomo to task for his nursing home failures, a topic that has been a sore spot for the governor over the last few months and one that had him attempting to shift the blame to the federal government and former President Donald Trump on several occasions. Having spent months call-

ing for an investigation into the state’s nursing home handling, Representative Nicole Malliotakis said James’s scathing report makes it clear that Zucker should be fired. “Governor Cuomo cannot hide anymore,” said Malliotakis. “On March 17, he told the people of New York and the nation ‘the buck stops on my desk.’ Now he needs to accept responsibility for his administration’s bad decisions that led to thousands of deaths of our most vulnerable and the cover-up that attempted to minimize it.”
Goodbye, Yellow Zone! Months after areas of the state were color-coded as COVID-19 clusters and subjected to tight restrictions, which were seen by many as unduly harsh, Governor Andrew Cuomo has eliminated nearly all of the zones, citing declining COVID-19 rates and the end of the post-holiday surge. The Monsey area, which also included New Square and parts of Hillcrest and Spring Valley, was among the first in the state to be designated as a red zone. A one-mile yellow buffer zone surrounded the entire red zone, with various restrictions imposed in both zones that limited the number of people allowed in shuls and imposed various stringencies on schools, many of which were required to close. The zones have changed over time, reported The Journal News, with the red zone downgraded to an orange zone in early November and then to yellow one week later, while the original yellow zone was removed entirely. New zones were announced by mid-November, as the number of active cases grew and spread throughout the county. Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht said that he was cautiously optimistic that infection rates would continue their decline with continued vigilance on masking and social distancing, ultimately leading to further easing of statewide restrictions. Specht called on both the state and the federal government to supply Rockland with more vaccines “so our residents can receive the protection they need and we can continue on the path to recovery.” County Executive Ed Day, who slammed Cuomo last week for shortchanging Rockland on desperately needed vaccines, continued to take potshots at the governor even as the news broke that Newburgh was the only area to remain a yellow zone in all of the Hudson Valley. “I am ecstatic that the governor’s onerous and unnecessary yellow zone restrictions have been lifted,” said Day. “It’s about time.” There was more good news last weekend, with Cuomo giving New York City restaurants the green light to open for indoor dining at 25% of their regular capacity as of February 14, a move that the governor hopes will jumpstart local economies. according to NBC News, many city restaurateurs feel the move is too little, too late, with eateries elsewhere in the state having had the ability to serve guests at 50% capacity for months, while they were able to open briefly from September through December before being shut down again by Cuomo because of rising infection rates. Acknowledging those concerns, Cuomo said simply “Twenty-five percent is better than zero, and that’s where we are now. If the numbers continue to get better, that number will go up.” Wedding receptions of up to 150 people will be officially permitted statewide as of March 15, subject to the approval of local health departments, with all guests required to test negative for COVID-19 and total attendance limited to 50% of a venue’s capacity. But even as he announced the positive developments, the governor warned that the possibility exists that they may be shortlived, should COVID-19 rates spike once again. “If there are facts and the facts change, we will have a different situation,” observed Cuomo. “One state response that is a given [is that] if any area’s hospital capacity hits 85% then we go back to restrictions.”
Large Private School Enrollment May Have East Ramapo Scoring Big in Federal Funding A federal coronavirus aid bill passed in December may bring the embattled East Ramapo School District as much as $66 million in aid, with the district owing the financial windfall to its 28,000 private school students. The Journal News reported that with 70% of East Ramapo’s private school students being classified as poor, the federal aid formula awarded the district more than double the $29 million in funding being given to Rockland County’s seven other school districts. East Ramapo has been plagued by financial woes for well over ten years, with the private school community complaining that New York’s funding formulas fail to take into account state-mandated expenses for nonpublic school students, who account for more than three-quarters of the schoolchildren in the district. Interim Superintendent Ray Giamartino said that the funding will help East Ramapo alleviate some of its financial concerns, even if just for one year. “If this aid comes to fruition, our East Ramapo Central School District students and community will be able to effectively provide sustained, equitable access to high-quality programs and services — with the targeted plan of supplementing social emotional–based programmatic supports by adding much-needed social workers,” said Giamartino. If approved, the $66 million in funding would be in addition to $22.3 million in funding that East Ramapo will be receiving from the federal government under the first round of the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security Act. But with the state’s pandemic adjustment cutting its school aid by the amount received in federal funding, local officials have expressed concern about the total funding allocated, saying that Albany’s cuts would come mostly from public school budgets, while the majority of the federal funding would benefit only private schools.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN RECAP: Rabbi
Reiness is worried that people have figured out the real reason he’s in Acco and why he doesn’t want to sell. Ariella arrives in Acco and settles in at the Abramovs’, where she’s renting a room. She plans to begin her search for Osher early the next morning.

racha and Shulamis sat at the table, peeling carrots for the soup, and Bassi slid a pan into the oven. “That’s it!” she announced gaily. “We’re almost finished. Who wants to go keep the little ones busy? And who wants to put linen on the beds in the shed?” “Who’s sleeping in the shed?” Bracha asked. “Uncle Elazar’s students. Uncle Elazar and Aunt Sarah will sleep in the guest room.” Shulamis went out to make the beds in the shed, which was actually a small caravan. It was connected to the house with a door and had an additional door to the outside. On nice days, Bassi used the shed as a playroom for the children, and on cold days, as a storage room for the endless mountains of laundry waiting for her, sacks of vegetables that Aryeh brought to her from Tzefas, and lots of other things that there was no room for in the house. Shulamis switched on the light. The floor was full of scraps of paper from Gadi’s paper boats. Piles of laundry that had been sitting securely on the old recliner were already spilling over onto the floor, and dozens of Clics and Legos were scattered all over the floor. Only then did Shulamis realize why the toy bins in the house had so few pieces. “Bracha!” she called into the house. “Are you coming to help me clean up in here? There isn’t even room to open the folding beds!”

Bracha joined her. “Oh, just move everything to the side,” she said, scratching her forehead. “I’m too exhausted right now to collect all of Gadi’s torn paper boats, and we don’t need all these toys in the house anyway!” “Ask Mommy if we need to clean up or not,” Shulamis said. “But first, help me move this chair with the laundry over to the side, and let’s pick up whatever clothes fell to the floor.” “Mommy will say that it doesn’t matter,” Bracha informed her. “She always says that the main thing is to greet the guests nicely; the mess doesn’t make a difference.” The closet door was a bit open, and Shulmais tugged at the handle. What was in that box? She peered inside. “Mommy!” she shrieked, jumping away from the closet. “Mommy!!! There’s an… animal here! It looks like a dog, or —” Enough. She wasn’t staying here one minute longer! In a flash, she was out of the shed and back in the warm house. “Mommy, come look at what’s in the closet!” “What’s in there?” Bassi asked from the kitchen, where she was peeling walnuts for the lettuce salad. “An animal, Mommy! There’s an animal in the shed! In a box in the closet!” “Was it sitting on the blankets?” Bassi calmly began checking the walnuts one by one. “No, it was just in the box!” “It must be Gadi’s fox cub, then.” Bassi looked at her daughter. “He found it yesterday and wanted to keep it. I told him to put it in the shed, and then totally forgot about it.” “So he should come and take it out!” Shulamis sat down on a chair in the kitchen and folded her arms. “Mommy, please, tell him to take it out!” “And where should I put it?” asked a voice from the kitchen door. “In your room?” “Gadi!! Mommy, tell him!” “Gadi,” Bassi said, “please, for Shabbos, find another place for your fox. By the way, did you give it anything to eat today?” “Sure! Early this morning, before I
ate anything myself!” “What does he eat?” asked Nechama, who was sitting on the floor with her younger brothers. She’d been quiet up until now. “You’d rather not know,” her brother replied with a grin. He glanced at Shulamis, who was still scowling. “Do you want to come help me move him away?” “Funny joke,” she snapped. “But don’t you need to go make the beds for our guests anyway?” he asked. “You make the beds, if there are foxes there!” “It’s just one fox — a very small one. A cub, really,” Gadi said. “Come on, Shulamis, since when are you such a scaredy-cat?” “Since I went to the closet in the shed to take out blankets, and almost fainted!” “But now you know about it,” her

He’s so cute… You won’t be sorry!” The little ones began clamoring around Gadi.“We also want to see the fox!” “Sure,” their older brother said magnanimously. Within a few moments, Gadi, Bracha and the little ones were back in the shed. Shulamis stayed where she was. “What happened, sweetie?” her mother asked, still facing the counter. “How did you know I’m here?” Shulamis glanced at her mother in surprise. “You didn’t even look in my direction!” “I felt you,” Bassi joked. “Nu? Why are you so upset?” “I don’t like the smell and the dirt and the mess in our house. Gadi should have understood that we don’t welcome guests like that!” “Nu, so teach him that,” her mother suggested calmly. “You’re very different from him. You have a strong sense

of order and cleanliness, and that’s a beautiful thing. Maybe it will rub off on the other kids... Anyway, do you think you can get the kids to clean up the shed? It could be a great activity for them.” * * * * * When Shlomo and Osher entered the shed two and a half hours later, it was hard to recognize the upsidedown, stuffy caravan of earlier that afternoon. Gadi had been very creative. He’d spread two old quilts over the ironing board and laundry rack, and that concealed a lot of the mess: the laundry chair, the toys, the broken tape recorder, and an assortment of other items that no one had wanted to pick up and put away. In the middle of the room were two beds with floral linen in different shades of green, and between the beds was a plastic chair, on which rested a tray with a few plastic cups, a bottle of water, and a bag of dates. “Medjool,” Shlomo said as he studied the bag. “But where are the snacks Reb Elazar gave us, so that we shouldn’t starve a whole Shabbos with all this vegetarian food?” “They’re in the bag behind you,” Osher said. He stood near the narrow blinds, studying the view from the window. “You know, it’s so pretty over here! I would love to go outside, but they’re still in middle of their emotional family reunion out there.” “And I just want to go to sleep.” Shlomo stretched out on one of the beds. “Too bad you didn’t come with me and Matari to the assembly job this morning. That was some job, and another pair of hands wouldn’t have hurt.” “My hands definitely would have hurt…” Osher said. “What did you assemble? The dining room table you finished yesterday?” “Yeah. It wasn’t supposed to be a difficult job; otherwise, Reb Elazar wouldn’t have scheduled its assembly on a day when almost everyone was gone. But for some reason, things got a little complicated.” “It’s funny that they give us an ‘offShabbos,’” Osher mused. “As if it’s a real yeshivah…”
“It wasn’t really like that at first. This off-Shabbos business is a recent thing. But anyway, from the very first off-Shabbos there were always those of us who stayed.” He stuck his hand into the bag of snacks. “When Yeruchem was with us, he always stayed, of course, and Eliyahu also almost always stayed. But this week his uncle invited him for Shabbos.” He riffled through the bag. “This is salty stuff,” he said. “Now I want something sweet. What about you, Osher?” “Nothing. I told you, I just want to go out. Look at that tree!” Shlomo didn’t even glance out the window. “What do you want? This is the Galilee. There are a hundred other trees like that. No, not a hundred, maybe a thousand.” “I think it’s so nice for children to grow up in this kind of a setting.” “But it’s not like they can spend all day outside with the butterflies and the birds, and think about how far they have to travel to get to school each day.” Shlomo lay down on the bed. “They could just not go to school,” Osher said from the window. Then he announced, “Okay, there are only kids outside now; all the adults went in. I think I’ll go out.” “Go.” Shlomo’s eyes were closed. “Wake me up an hour before Shabbos, okay?” Osher didn’t even hear him. He was already outside, examining the tree he liked from top to bottom. “Watch out!” someone exclaimed. “You almost stepped on him!” “Huh?” Osher looked around. “Did I step on anything?” “Yes! My fox!” Osher immediately recognized the energetic kid from the previous Friday, but what the boy said next was so interesting that he couldn’t even dwell on that insulting encounter. “I’m stepping on what?” “Not on what, on who. You’re stepping on my fox!”
Osher Gadi and I sat down on the ground near the fox. “He’s so funny — look at how his nose is touching the plate! I just hope he doesn’t bite it by mistake, because

plastic plates can cut,” Gadi said. “I didn’t know foxes like scrambled eggs,” I said. “I didn’t know, either.” Gadi looked at the fox, which was sniffing the contents of the plate. “But I don’t like them, so I gave him a chance to check it out.” I looked at the fox’s thin tongue. “He’s still a cub. He should probably still be drinking mostly milk.” LL Twas OD skeptical. “Soy milk and CAGadi almond milk are really expensive, and my father says it’s bal tashchis to give it to a fox. Anyway, he seems to be managing fine on the food I give 10him.” on m“Oh.” my nose thoughtinuteIcscratched fully. “Don’t you have regular milk?” “No,” the boy said. “The lactose isn’t healthy.” “And eggs are fine?” “As long as we don’t overdo it,” he said. “Plant-based protein is best. But I have a hard time digesting soy protein, so once in two days I have to eat a hard-boiled egg or an omelet. But I really don’t like eggs.” “It’s a shame that you don’t like eggs,” a voice said from the window. I think it was Gadi’s father. “And it will be an even bigger shame if you have to shower in ice-cold water, Gadi. But anyone who wastes time on Friday afternoon will find that the hot water in the tank has run out...” “Oh, no!” Gadi jumped up. “Hot water comes from the big tank my father built on the roof, and it sometimes gets freezing toward the end of the shower. And I’m always the one who gets there last! Will you watch the fox for me in the meantime, Osher?” “Yes, sure,” I reassured him. “Check that he’s not taking too-big bites that he could choke on, that he doesn’t run to any dangerous places, and that he doesn’t climb the tree.” His expression was so serious I wanted to laugh, but I kept a straight face.
“And if something happens, call me right away, okay?” “No problem.” “And maybe you can think of a name for him, too!” I was left with the fox, which looked at me with what Mommy calls a “steady gaze” before it went back to smelling the grayish omelet in the plastic plate. I think Gadi also has ADHD, like I do. This little woodsy area is probably great for him. In the end, the fox walked away without eating the eggs, and I went back to our room. Someone rapped twice on the door and then entered. It was Reb Elazar. “Is Shlomo sleeping?” he whispered. “Yes,” I replied. “So maybe you should wake him up.” He smiled at me. It was a much calmer smile than I’d seen on him the last day and a half. It looked like

You didn’t daven Mincha yet either, right?” “Right.” Twenty minutes later, I found myself walking to shul together with Shlomo, Reb Elazar, his brother-inlaw Aryeh, and Aryeh’s sons, including Gadi, who’d left the fox wandering near one of the trees. I walked behind the rest of the group, looking around and inhaling the fresh air and smell. I sensed that this Shabbos was going to be much more interesting than I’d first thought. To be continued…

Biden to Meet With Group of Ten Republican Senators on COVID-19 Relief THE PULSE: President Joe Biden announced that he would meet with a group of ten Republican senators who are proposing an alternative to his administration’s COVID-19 relief bill. Senator Susan Collins of Maine is leading the Republican effort, which has the support of Senators Mitt Romney (R-UT), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), and others. In a statement addressed to the president, the group said that “We recognize your calls for unity and want to work in good faith with your administration to meet the health, economic and societal challenges of the COVID crisis.” The Republican proposal would cost $600 billion, significantly less than the $1.9 trillion plan proposed by Biden. It would keep funding for vaccines and PPE but cut proposed stimulus checks from $1,400 to $1,000 and limit the payments to lower-income Americans. It would also cut additional funding to schools. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), a member of the Republican group, said that “This is the smartest and best place for the president to start on his unity promises.” THE IMPACT: President Biden has expressed a preference for a bipartisan approach to COVID-19 relief. Senator Collins (R-ME) said that “The president is sincere in his commitment
116 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 3, 2021 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
to bipartisanship. That’s the way he always operated when he was a senator. And from my conversations with him since the election, it seems clear to me that he wants to continue to operate that way.” However, Biden is also under pressure from his party’s progressive flank that would prefer that he stick with a bigger bill and get it passed on a partisan vote through reconciliation. To pass a bill with reconciliation, Biden would need the support of all Democratic senators. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has expressed opposition to some parts of Biden’s proposed bill and had harsh criticism for recent partisan comments made by Vice President Kamala Harris in favor of the administration’s COVID-19 relief proposal. Manchin said that “We’re going to try to find a bipartisan pathway forward, but we need to work together. That’s not a way of working together.” COVID-19 relief legislation is shaping up to be the first big test of the Biden administration’s stated commitment to delivering relief and working across the aisle.

pits those loyal to the populist vision of Donald Trump against those who advocate for a return to the traditional conservative values of the GOP. This week saw several heated flashpoints and clashes. LIZ CHENEY: Liz Cheney is the House Republican Conference Chair and is the third-ranking Republican in the Republican House leadership. She is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and represents Wyoming as the sole congressional representative of that state. She was one of ten congressional Republicans who voted to impeach President Trump. As such, Cheney evoked the enmity of many of her colleagues. More than 115 Republican members of Congress support removing her from her leadership position. Wyoming State Senator Republican Anthony Bouchard announced his intent to challenge Cheney in the next state primary. Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL) flew into Cheyenne to whip up support to defeat Cheney. However, Republican Senator Rob Portman (OH) pushed back against criticism of Cheney and said, “I think she’s very smart and she plays a key role in our party,” and that “I think it’s important to have her voice in the process.” Former President George W. Bush made it clear that he supports Cheney. His spokesperson announced that he intends to call Dick Cheney and “wish him a happy 80th birthday, and to thank him for his daughter’s service.” MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE: Republicans are grap-
pling with how to respond to Rep. Taylor Greene. She is an unabashed and outspoken supporter of former President Donald Trump. She was recently appointed to the House Education and Labor Committee by the Republican leadership. The Georgia first-term congresswoman is best known for her past support of QAnon conspiracy theories and for introducing articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden on his first day in office. Left-leaning Media Matters recently unearthed a 2018 social media post where she promoted a theory that a Jewish banking family with connections to powerful Democrats started the devastating wildfires that ravaged California with a laser beamed from space. She also claimed that the Parkland school shooting massacre was a “false flag” and liked a 2019 message calling for Nancy Pelosi’s execution. She posted a video in 2018 where she claimed that the “only way you get your freedoms back is (if) it’s earned with the price of blood.” Many Democrats have called on Republican leadership to rescind her committee appointments. Some have called on her to be disciplined or expelled from Congress. Republican Senator Rob Portman said, “I think Republican leaders ought to stand up and say it is totally unacceptable what she has said.” Arkansas Republican Governor Asa Hutchinson said, “I would not vote for her.” Fox’s Chris Wallace called out Republicans for showing “more visible outrage” toward Liz Cheney than to the wild conspiracy theories of Taylor Greene. However, Taylor Greene posted a message claiming that “I had a GREAT call with my all-time favorite POTUS, President Trump! I’m so
118 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 3, 2021 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
grateful for his support.” Senator Mitt Romney slammed Greene’s message with his statement that “Lies of a feather flock together: Marjorie Taylor Greene’s nonsense and the ‘big lie’ of a stolen election.” The Republican Jewish Coalition issued the following statement: “The RJC has never supported or endorsed Marjorie Taylor Greene. We are offended and appalled by her comments and her actions. We opposed her as a candidate, and we continue to oppose her now. She is far outside the mainstream of the Republican Party, and the RJC is working closely with the House Republican leadership regarding next steps in this matter.” IMPEACHMENT TRIAL: Republican senators voted overwhelmingly in favor of dismissing impeachment charges against former President Donald Trump. They argued that there is no constitutional basis for holding an impeachment trial for a president no longer in office. The vote clarifies that it is improbable that the Senate will convict President Trump in his second impeachment trial. However, Republican Senators Rob Portman and Bill Cassidy both said they would keep an open mind and cast their votes based on the trial evidence. Some Democrats have begun to float the idea of censuring President Trump instead of proceeding with impeachment. ADAM KINZINGER: Rep. Kinzinger is one of the ten
Republicans to vote to impeach President Trump. He has been on the receiving end of much Republican criticism. This week he announced the formation of a PAC geared to challenging Republicans who support Trump and ridding the party of populist influence. Kinzinger is attempting to offset the clout of Republicans who embrace Trump. Last week the Arizona Republican Party showed their allegiance to Trump when they voted to censure former Senator Jeff Flake, John McCain’s widow Cindy McCain, and Governor Doug Ducey for being anti- or not sufficiently pro-Trump. This week the South Carolina Republican Party voted to formally censure Rep. Tom Rice for his vote to impeach President Trump.
Problem Solvers Caucus Adds New Members THE PULSE: The congressional bipartisan Problem Solv-
ers Caucus chaired by Tom Reed (R-NY) and Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) announced the addition of sixteen new members for the 117th Congress. The Caucus now comprises 28 Republicans and 28 Democrats. In a statement, Tom Reed said that “The continued growth of the Caucus, including our wonderful class of new members, is a testament to the growing number of proud Republicans and proud Democrats in Congress willing to put country before party.” Josh Gottheimer said that “With this new class of Problem Solvers Caucus members, it’s clear that there is growing enthusiasm to break through the gridlock in Congress and work across the aisle to help move our nation forward. I’m honored to help lead this group in Congress at such a pivotal moment.”

We think it’s a debilitating label: an a It brings up a vision of therapists an intervention. Of panic and phobias an At least that’s what it was like for m struggled with my own child. But then I had the siyata d’Shmaya to get in touch with Rabbi Benyamin Halpern and saw the facts through the eyes of this top expert on anxiety in children, and I never looked at it the same way again. In fact, I never looked at my child — or at any child — the same way. Here I share wisdom gleaned from Rabbi Halpern’s instruction in the hopes to further his goal of empowering parents with the tools to empower their children.
Is My Child Normal? To many of us, “normal” fits into a tiny box at the very center of the spectrum of normalcy. It’s as if perfect children who behave within certain bounds, speak a certain way, and perform at a certain level are in that coveted center, and any child veering off the ideal has a disorder, a clinical problem. But in reality, “normal” covers a very wide range, which looks something like the below, and while we’re quick to diagnose and label, it’s only the extremes that fall within the range of abnormal. Disorder

<-----------|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|----------->
Normal children have fears. Normal children will voice frustrations. Normal children will speak inappropriately. Normal children will break things. Normal children will carry on, and kvetch, and resist discipline.

anxious child. d years of nd unending stress. me when I first Nothing is “wrong” with children who display less-than-perfect behaviors; they’re not broken, and they don’t have to be fixed. But we still have to deal with the behaviors and teach our kids to handle and express their emotions in a healthy way. And we can! Ninety percent of issues in children, Rabbi Halpern says, can be resolved by their parents without professional intervention. Indeed, with the right information and tools, children can get all the help they need right in their own homes. Parents are in a position to educate their children about emotions. Because parents have that power: to instill in their children resilience so that they don’t easily despair and get knocked over by every setback. Furthermore, they can actually teach their children how to operate and regulate what Rabbi Halpern calls the “supercomputer between their ears.”
A Candidate for Anxiety Before reading on, I invite you to close your eyes and think of some character traits you associate with children with anxiety. Irrationality? Tension? Low self-esteem? Insecurity? While people are quick to name a host of negative terms associated with anxiety, the traits that are the prime breeding ground for anxiety are actually the greatest character strengths. In fact, parents wish and daven that their children be blessed with these gifts. Because the main conditions for anxiety are creativity, sensitivity and intelligence.
Creativity An anxious child must be creative. If a kid can imagine
a bear, a thief, a bird in the shower, lightning hitting the house, with such vivid detail — if they can create in their mind something that is real enough to scare the daylights out of them — extreme creativity is at play here.
Sensitivity For a child to create a ferocious lion in his own mind, and then allow this self-made beast to scare the wits out of him, he must also be very sensitive. And what better personality trait can one ask for? Sensitivity makes the kindest child, the most attuned parent, the most caring mechanech, the ideal spouse, and the friend everyone wants to call their own. Intelligence When a child exhibits anxiety, they know every minute detail of the object of their fear. They know what a snake slithering under their bed would sound like. They know what the worst maladies feel like. They know exactly how high various animals can jump and what injuries each one is capable of causing. They know the secrets and signs of when parents are about to get divorced. They’re so knowledgeable about everything that can go wrong, and it’s their

Deescalate With Validation Humans are wired for connection, to be heard and understood, and Hashem designed us to feel relief when someone helps us hold our pain. And while we often instinctively want to dismiss or minimize strong emotions when a child expresses them (by saying, “You don’t have to be afraid,” or, “Don’t cry over such a little thing,” or, “It’s not the end of the world; big deal!”) with the belief that this will calm them down, the opposite is actually true. When emotions go unacknowledged, it leads to escalation. The child will only get more hysterical and more desperate for you to get the message that they’re in pain. Just like a baby will cry until the mother shows up, a child in pain will kvetch and complain and carry on until you show up for them emotionally. Validation, on the other hand, shows your child that they’re being heard and gives them permission to feel their emotions. This enables them to calm down. Studies have shown that as early as at eight months of age, the best way to calm a child is for the mother to scrunch up her face and mimic the child’s expression of pain to show that she feels for the child. Validation, which is explained in the steps below, is useful for reacting to any strong emotion, be it from a child, a spouse, a stranger, or even a supervisor at work.
1. Mirror: Copy facial expressions and repeat back to the child what they’re feeling. Mirroring someone’s words also gives them the opportunity to clarify what their internal experience is. They will begin to relax as soon as they feel heard.
2. Validate: Give the child permission to feel what they feel. This doesn’t mean that you agree that the intensity of the reaction is warranted. It just gives the child the message that “If I were in your place, I’d also feel sad/angry/hurt/upset. If I would be in your class, I’d also have the pressure to take that type of snack. If I’d lose the game, I’d also feel destroyed. If I would be your age, I’d also want to run a business during recess time.” This validation will further relax them.
3. Empathize: Feel their emotions along with them. Show them that it bothers you that they are in pain. When a child has a meltdown, they’re usually not looking for a solution. Even more so, they often tantrum about matters that aren’t even driving their protests! They just want to be heard, and they want you to help them carry their pain. Hear them. Validate them.
140 / THE MONSEY VIEW
intelligence that enables them to pick up that vast amount of information.
Do you have an anxious child? What a gift!
Through the Eyes of Your Child These three strengths that are at the base of a child’s anxiety give kids an imagination that makes their internal experiences, as exaggerated or unrealistic as they may be, appear real. Every child, every human being, has fears. But whereas for another child the experience is like watching their worries on a little screen — it’s there, but it doesn’t take over their entire being — children with anxiety are living their life in an IMAX theater. The events of their imagination are splashed across the entire wall, the chairs are moving, the sound effects are terrifying, they’re wearing 3D glasses, and they’re entirely absorbed in the experience. It’s a figment of their imagination, perhaps, but it feels so real, so vivid, that it makes everything else fade into the background.
The FEAR Experience: False Evidence Appears Real
So How Can You Help? Normalize it. Explain to your child what emotions are and what fear is. We are all sometimes afraid, and we often have reason to be. Fear is a sign of growth. Every time we step out of our comfort zone — whether it’s going onto a school bus for the first time, learning to ride a bicycle, or reaching out to someone of authority — the elements of fear and discomfort are there.

While people are quick to name a host of negative terms associated with anxiety, the traits that are the prime breeding ground for anxiety are actually the greatest character strengths.
Explain to your child how their talents and creativity make fears that much more real to them. It’s not a dysfunction; it’s their reality. And even though the danger may not be real, normalize that to them. Teach them that with their creativity, sensitivity and intelligence — such amazing character traits that will serve them so well in life — it makes sense that they experience their fears with such intensity.
Model with your experience. Tell your child about a time when you needed to try something new and the trepidation you felt. Or about a time you learned a new concept or skill and it was uncomfortable to dip your toes in. Use your personal experiences to normalize anxiety and to model how you overcame it. “The first time I drove over a bridge, I was so scared and it took a lot of courage. But every time I travel, it gets easier and easier. And even though I know that bridges are built safely by top engineers, and that the George Washington Bridge has never once collapsed in its 94 years of existence, I am still never fully relaxed when I get to the bridge. But I drive over it anyway, and I’m so happy to get to the other side to be able to visit Zeidy.” And teach your child that fear is control-

lable. A person is stronger than fear, and with the tools below, they can learn to manage it.
Don’t argue with logic. Don’t argue with the facts. Fear is not rational. Telling a child that “there are no snakes in New York City,” or “that kidnapper has been in jail for years already,” will not make them any less fearful. They know
The FEAR PROBLEM: Failing to Experience the Almighty’s Reality that the danger isn’t real, but the imagery is making them afraid nonetheless. In their mind’s eye, it’s happening right now and it’s terrifying. Think of an adult. They may know that an amusement ride is perfectly safe, that people don’t fall from the observatory on the 100th floor, that airplanes land safely every hour, and yet their hearts will drum fast, they’ll be sweating, and they’ll be terrified as they look down to the pavement below. You can give every logical argument to counter a fear, but imagination is deeper
than any logic, and reasoning will not help an anxious child.
Control the imagination. You can’t wipe the fear away with logic, but you can teach your child to use their powerful imagination to create positive imagery that will change the footage running through their mind. In studying fear, Rabbi Halpern came across the case of Nick Wallenda, the acrobat who crossed Niagara Falls by tightrope, and then undertook the feat of crossing the Grand Canyon. Before attempting this endeavor, Wallenda knew it wasn’t the logistics that set this apart from his previous adventures; he had the skills he needed to maintain his balance on a tightrope. It was just the component of fear that was magnified in this case. And so he dealt with his fears. But he didn’t use logic; he didn’t tell himself, “Come on, you’ve broken so many world records, and you’ll do this, too.” He didn’t even work on improving his skills. He used the power of his imagination. Using his powerful imagination, he visualized himself crossing over the Canyon — once, twice and three times — until in his mind it was clear that he could do it. He dealt with fear by imagining himself overcoming it. And he did. And that’s how we can teach our children to use the power of their imagination. Have him imagine, in clear detail, getting through the situation he fears. With guided imagery, implant images of success in your child’s mind. Have your child envision himself going into bed on his own without checking under it for snakes, and then closing his eyes and falling asleep calmly. Have your child imagine, scene by scene, how he’s entering the bathroom, locking the door, and taking a long, relaxing shower without worrying about a bird hiding there. Have your child visualize himself taking a test, scoring low, and then coming home and being okay about it. Have your child envision these positive scenes as many times as he needs before having him conquer his fears on his own. Your child has a powerful imagination. Teach him to use it. Teach him that he holds the controls to the IMAX screen. Set a worry time. Designate a set amount of time daily for talking about worries. Tell your child, “It’s okay to worry. It’s normal to worry, and I care that you’re worried. But we don’t have to deal with it the very moment the fear pops into your head. We talk about worries each evening between 8:30 and 8:45. That’s when we’ll discuss COVID-19 and a Biden presidency and riots and your fears over the Chumash test.” This teaches children not only how to deal with their fears more effectively, but it also equips them with the priceless tool of delayed gratification. Fear is usually triggered by something the child

Every time we step out of our comfort zone — whether it’s going onto a school bus for the first time, learning to ride a bicycle, or reaching out to someone of authority — the elements of fear and discomfort are there.
hears and sees, and it’s most intense in the moment. Teaching them the powerful skill of pushing off discomfort will train them that it’s okay to wait, that it’s okay to put the matter aside for a bit and get back to it later. This curbs the urgency and the panic, and it makes fears that much more manageable.
Ride the emotion. Our natural instinct is to run away from and to avoid difficult emotions and fears. But emotions are not bad, and emotions are tolerable. They are not stronger than we are; we can handle emotions. Emotions come, peak, and then go. You can run away from an emotion (and never really get rid of it), or you can ride it and let it pass. Teach children to ride difficult emotions, to let the emotion take hold of them as it gets stronger, to brave through it — and then watch it recede. Here, too, bank on past successes and model with your own experiences. Remind your child of how he overcame other fears. How he walked onto the bus the first time. How he slept over at someone else’s home, despite the discomfort. And how he only grew and came out stronger from each new experience, and conquered that fear by braving through it.

You can use the analogy of a cold pool. “It’s hard to take that first jump and let the cold wash over you. You get colder and colder, but then you’ve conquered it, and you get comfortable in the water! “Emotions are temporary, and they won’t destroy you. And with each fear you overcome, life just gets bigger. You can now go to sleep without checking under your bed. You can now present a speech at school without worrying about forgetting your lines. And you can now lock
The FEAR SOLUTION: Face Emotions And Recover the door of the bathroom without being afraid.” WHATEVER CHALLENGES your child may face, know and believe that they’re awesome. Don’t get distracted by negative messages. As much as you believe in your children, that’s how much they will grow. Because behind every child who believes in himself is a parent who believes in him.

The mind is like a vast iceberg, astonishing in its brilliance and awesome in its depth. The part of our minds that we actually use represents just the tip of that iceberg, while what lies beneath the surface is more complex than we can even begin to imagine. Science claims that the human brain may contain more synapses — over 86 billion — than stars in the Milky Way galaxy. And it is through hypnosis that we can tap into and unlock our mind’s powerful potential.
WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is a heightened state of consciousness that allows a person to access their subconscious mind — the brain’s “control center” — through guided imagery and deep relaxation techniques. Studies show that hypnosis is up to 80% faster and more effective than traditional talk therapy and can be used to help treat a variety of symptoms. Hypnosis can help people release old fears, overcome trauma, let go of negative habits, develop healthier relationships, heal chronic pain, achieve relaxation, gain greater selfconfidence, and so much more. In my practice, it’s my goal, with Hashem’s help, to reconnect people with their higher selves, with others and with Hashem, in order to help all parts of the mind, body and neshamah heal and work together in harmony. This article will focus on a couple of hypnosis case studies of clients who were able to successfully use hypnotic techniques to release old fears and “reframe” past experiences.

MIRIAM
PRESENTING PROBLEM: ARACHNOPHOBIA (FEAR OF SPIDERS) A newlywed man approached me during my first few months as a consulting hypnotist and asked me to help his wife overcome her severe arachnophobia. Miriam was so terrified of spiders that it was interfering with her quality of life. Oftentimes she would wake up screaming at night, convinced there was a spider in the room. And when she actually did see one, she would shriek hysterically and run in terror. Before our session, I said some Tehillim, asking Hashem to guide me and give me the insight that I needed to help this woman. When Miriam arrived, I sat her down in a comfortable recliner and explained to her that fear is
like a tiny seed that takes root in the mind. Over time that “fear seed” can grow into a mighty tree, spreading its branches into different areas of a person’s life. Attempting to chop down the tree after it has taken root is an arduous, daunting task. Traditional talk therapy using the conscious
152 / THE MONSEY VIEW
mind would, metaphorically, pluck the leaves off of that fear tree, one by one, before moving to the branches and then finally the trunk. Hypnosis, however, utilizes the subconscious mind, which is like the control center of the brain, to bypass this long process and go directly to the root of the problem. Through guided imagery and breathing exercises, the mind gradually relaxes and is able to recall the very first moment in time when that “fear seed” was implanted in the mind. Then the mind is guided to travel back to that moment, when it is possible to pluck out the seed and reframe the fear before it has a chance to grow and spread. This advanced hypnotic technique is known as regression therapy. “But I don’t remember when I first felt scared of spiders,” Miriam protested. “You may not remember it consciously, but your subconscious mind does,” I reassured her. Using soothing imagery, I gently guided Miriam into a deep state of relaxation and then asked her subconscious mind to help find the root of her fear. Under hypnosis, Miriam regressed to the age of five and vividly recalled sitting on the floor of her room, playing quietly with her dolls. She remembered reaching into a brown cardboard box to retrieve some of her doll clothes, and as she did so, feeling a strange tickling sensation travel up her arm. She lifted
her hand out and watched a tiny, black spider crawl up her forearm and bite her. The five-year-old shrieked in terror, and her mother ran into the room to check up on her. Seeing the spider, her mother, too, panicked. The child’s own fear, compounded by her mother’s overreaction, caused Miriam to have a very strong negative association with spiders. In order to release that fear, I asked her subconscious mind to examine the scene from above, with the eyes of an adult. Removed from the drama of the event, Miriam quickly realized that the spider had only been trying to protect itself and was more afraid of her than she was of the spider. With that newfound understanding, Miriam was ready to forgive the spider for the pain it had caused her. She was also able to forgive her mother for unwittingly implanting such a strong fear inside of her as a child. Forgiveness is the key to so much emotional healing, so when she forgave both the spider and her mother, the negative energy was released. After removing the trauma of that early childhood event, I encouraged Miriam to examine and pull out all of the negative thoughts, emotions and associations with spiders and reframe them in a positive, healthier light. Miriam emerged from her session feeling calm and refreshed, amazed that she had been able to recall such a long-buried memory. Months later, her husband called to thank me profusely for my work. Miriam was now functioning normally. Her fear of spiders had dissipated and no longer interfered with her quality of life.

DINAH
PRESENTING PROBLEM: AUTOPHOBIA (FEAR OF BEING ALONE) Dinah, a young adolescent, was brought to my practice by her concerned mother. A traumatic event involving an attempted burglary and shooting incident had taken place in their neighborhood months earlier, and while the rest of the family had, baruch Hashem, moved on emotionally, Dinah was still stuck in a state of perpetual terror. Although Dinah was over thirteen, she had begun acting like a much younger child and in-
sisted that her mother never leave her side, especially at night. She was afraid to take showers, loud noises now frightened her, and her mother was growing weary of constantly babysitting and soothing her teenage daughter when she had errands to do and a busy household to run.
154 / THE MONSEY VIEW
I began the session with both Dinah and her mother present to explain the process of hypnosis as well as to address any of their concerns. When Dinah assured me that she was comfortable, her mother left the room, and I asked Dinah for her version of the events that had taken place on that fateful night. (I’ve noticed that adolescents often feel more free to speak once their parents have left the room.) She described the events to me in detail, and we discussed her goals for the session: to release the fear from that event and to feel more confident about being alone in her home. We then proceeded with guided visualization and breathing techniques, and I gently brought Dinah to a “safe place” inside of her mind to where she could return if she ever felt afraid. I then asked her to build up a mental force field or shield in her mind that would keep her safe from the emotions of that event. Next I asked Dinah to locate the fear inside of herself and describe it to me. She did so, and we worked together on pulling all of the old fear up and out of her body and then releasing it in a healthy way. She was encouraged to replace the old fear with positive associations and thoughts,
including a sense of calm, selfconfidence and the feeling of being held in Hashem’s embrace, protected and safe. When she was ready, I asked Dinah to emotionally remove herself from the traumatic events of the attempted burglary by suggesting that she go back in time, hovering over the scene like a news reporter who is there simply to report on the events taking place below. I then invited Dinah to create a “video” of the events in her mind and asked her to begin fast-forwarding and rewinding the events in rapid succession, until all of the old, fearful energy dissipated. She did so, and we then began to work on each of the individual challenges Dinah had been experiencing since the event took place. It turned out that the reason Dinah was afraid of showers now was that she had been in the shower at the time of the incident. We released the negative shower association and then addressed the fear of her mother being absent. I encouraged her to become her own mother, in the sense of nurturing herself and giving herself the feelings of calm and protection that she needed. Finally, I had her “future walk” her life, seeing herself showering calmly and feeling totally at ease, even when she was alone in the house. Dinah emerged from the session feeling much more self-confident and happy. Within weeks, her mother reported back to me that Dinah was now, baruch Hashem, “fine” and “doing great.” She no longer needed her mother to stay home with her, and they were both able to get on with their lives.
A NEW LIFE MANTRA As part of the treatment I often ask my clients to come up with a statement, a mantra of sorts, containing a short, positive phrase that encompasses their goals. The phrase needs to contain only positive language (because the subconscious mind cannot hear negative language) and begin with the words “I am.” One client, for example, chose the mantra, “I am confident, productive and happy.” This technique is a great practice to be applied out of therapy as well. You can come up with your own mantra and use it to reprogram negative thought patterns. There are two times a day when the subconscious mind (where our proverbial mind settings are located) is wide open and can receive instructions: just before we fall asleep at night and as we awaken in the morning (referred to as the hypnagogic and the hypnopompic stages). Repeating your new life mantra, “I am (fill in the blanks),” at these times of the day — and as often as possible throughout the rest of the day — will begin to shift your perceptions and life experiences in a more positive direction. The brain is a muscle, and the more we “exercise” it by feeding it positive thoughts, the more we will see the results of those new thought patterns.
These are just two case studies culled from the nine-plus years that I’ve been successfully working with clients. The hypnosis journey has been a humbling and joyful one, because there is no better feeling in the world than knowing you’ve helped someone and truly made a difference in their lives. There’s a story told of a man who was walking at the seashore when he noticed thousands of poor starfish stranded on the beach. Taking pity on them, the man proceeded to pick them up, one by one, and hurl them back into the ocean. A bystander, watching the man’s odd behavior, approached him and asked why he was even bothering. “There are so many stranded starfish littering the beach; you’ll never be able to make a difference by throwing just a few back in!” The man regarded the bystander patiently and then bent down to retrieve another starfish. He then took aim and hurled it back into the ocean. Turning back to the other man, he replied calmly, “Made a difference to that one!” This is, essentially, how I view my hypnosis practice. I so badly want to help the entire world heal, but I can only work with clients one at a time. At every session, I do the best that I can, and place the rest in Hashem’s hands. The school gate is rusty and looks about a hundred years old. Which it probably is. Scuffed shoes, hard balls, playful shouts echo in the frosty air: recess in a boys school. Through the slats, I see boys run and jump and play, their boundless energy a sharp contrast to the deepest of winter all around them. I used to look like that once. Flyaway peyos, sparkling eyes holding the joy of promise. I was in a class just like this one, and the sudden feeling of déjà vu that washes over me brings a lump to my throat. It’s not a feeling I like, this one, so I square my shoulders and tug my ladder forward. Because I’m meant to be fixing the broken gate, and here I am, whining like a small child. As soon as the boys catch sight of me, they abandon their game, their ball, their scores, and surround me like a swarm of bees, eyes wide. A builder, with a real, real ladder and tools, in their playground, that’s like... a dream! A dream, yeah. I shuffle onward, kicking gravel with my work shoes, feeling the ache in my muscles. I hate the memories this place brings back. How one second you’re an adult — seriously, 21 years old — and the next you’re all but a boy, just a small lost boy, like you were years ago. The gate is bad news, and I distract myself with saws and screws and nails, so I don’t hear the thud of my heart, the cry of my soul. My legs are shaky and the ground below me is so near and so far, and filled with boys and wide-eyed wonder and purity so raw that even I can feel it. “Whatcha doing, Mister Builder?” His yarmulke reads Shauli, and a smattering of freckles rests delicately on his upturned nose. Cute. I ignore him for a minute, scared
my voice will crack if I open my mouth. But he is persistent, this little boy, and his smile is endearing enough. “Fixing things.” My voice is abrupt, and I hate how weak I sound. Like I need to defend myself in the face of these... these five-year-olds. Couldn’t they go back to what they were playing? Like, am I that interesting? My rescue arrives in the form of the older grades coming outside for recess. They spill out of the big double doors, groups of boys kicking a ball, kidding around, and suddenly I’m not all that interesting anymore. The yard is suddenly full, boys spreading to each corner, in groups, in pairs, alone. The gate is stubborn and old and annoying, and I wrestle with my drill, but apparently I’m no match for it. This is taking too much time and way too much energy. The ballgame going on a few feet away from me seems almost intriguing by now. These boys touch a chord in me, somehow, somewhere. I don’t know why; I’m so far from where I used to be, so hurt, but... still. Something. Something about being back in a cheder is tugging at me. Even though that’s where it all happened. That’s where I was broken, crushed. Shattered beyond repair. Just thinking about it brings tears springing to my eyes with a ferocity that shocks me. I shake my head and attack the gate in front of me. I’m not going there. Not here, not now. But when I catch sight of him, I almost keel from the jolt that goes through me. Grasping the side of my ladder so hard my knuckles turn white, I crane my neck, stretching as far as I dare. He’s partly obscured, shaded by the tall trees that edge the playground. Invisible. Alone. Just like I was, then — — and suddenly, the years fall away, and there I am, eleven years old again, and so achingly, achingly alone. In a playground filled with boys, swarming with humanity, with noise and people, but so alone, wondering how long it takes for a heart to fall apart. In his eyes I see a mirror, a pain so intense, a heart so broken, I can’t handle it. I’ve been there. Hunched shoulders, downcast eyes, cold ripping through my very core. No escape, nowhere to go. Held hostage in this torture, day in, day out. A few boys pass him, engrossed in some conversation, not noticing him, not looking, not seeing two feet in front of them. Look! I want to say, beg. Save him! And where are the rebbeim? There must be someone. Someone must be able to help, someone’s got to notice. He’s dying, right in front of their eyes; can’t they see? A few bigger boys are heading in his direction now, all gangly limbs and lanky walk, and it takes all I have not to scream, not to shout out loud until someone hears, someone notices. The pain flooding through me is so intense, my hands shake. They’re nearer now, and he’s trapped — he’s trapped with nowhere to go, darting eyes, throbbing heart, someone? Anyone? Soon it will be too late, the pain overtaking suddenly, so suddenly. I know that. I know. How many days can he survive this? How long before, before...? Fury is exploding through me, ugly and vicious and ferocious, and all I can think of is my mother, my poor mother. She thought I would be a talmid chacham. She thought her only son would make her proud. She didn’t think I would end up like this. Not her, not me. He runs, clinging to the sidelines, brushing past boys, so many of them, and he’s frightened and desperate and broken, all at once. He’s so young, too young to have his future ripped away from him. He needs a chance, a rebbi, a friend. Someone, anyone, to notice him, to talk to him, to listen to him. Someone save him. Please, someone, save him.

Part Four
Hi, again. Last week I explained how I had pretty much given up on ever getting answers or relief for my symptoms. Full disclosure here: I did give up emotionally, as well as physically — but I was always an obedient patient. I continued seeing my many doctors, mostly out of a sense of obligation. If I was told to schedule another appointment, I did, but my focus had shifted from diagnosis to managing my symptoms, if possible. I saw a dermatologist when my rashes became too inflamed or itchy to ignore, and saw a gastroenterologist as advised by my primary care physician. Unfortunately, the only gastro who was covered by my insurance at the time wasn’t very good at his job. He, of all my doctors, should have suspected or tested me for celiac disease. I also kept up faithfully with the hematologist who managed my chronic anemia, and submitted to iron infusions once or twice a year. While I was supremely grateful to Hashem that I was one of the few patients in the infusion center not receiving chemotherapy, I still hated it.
168 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 3, 2021 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
I hated the whole medical scene. It seemed to exist on an alternate plane. Patients would leave their identities, their very personhood, outside the doors, and become cogs in the wheels of a cold and impersonal monolith. It didn’t matter who you were, what you had accomplished in your life; all that was irrelevant. In the medical field, you were just a patient, at the complete mercy of the system. Granted, I did meet and was cared for by many wonderful human beings within the system, but the system was still dehumanizing. I believe that anyone who has ever needed to be part of that scene, either personally or with a family member, knows what I am referring to. And so, time passed. My daughter, now sixteen, was born in July of 2004. She was born two months premature, and as is common in premature infants, had severe acid reflux. She started seeing a pediatric gastroenterologist when she was three weeks old. Her gastro’s office was full of brochures, including many about celiac. I’m a voracious reader who, in a pinch, will read the labels on a bottle of shampoo or package of baby wipes. Obviously, I always read the brochures available in medical offices, but this was the first time I was reading about celiac. The brochures were geared to pediatrics, and at the time I was more focused on my daughter than myself, but I remember feeling that some of what I was reading seemed all too familiar. I didn’t make the connection then, but a seed was planted. When my daughter was about five or six years old, a friend told me that there was going to be a Grand Rounds lecture at Maimonides Medical Center, focusing on the different ways that food allergies can manifest. I’m highly allergic, and this friend had children with severe food allergies, so we decided to go together. The lecture was intended for the medical staff and students at Maimonides, but they allowed people from the community to just walk in. The lecture about allergies was interesting and informative, and when it ended, the emcee announced that the next lecture would be about celiac disease, given by, if I remember correctly, a Dr. Green from Australia. He was considered the foremost authority on celiac disease at the time, according to the emcee. On a whim, I decided to stay. I didn’t know much about celiac disease and was curious to hear more. To this day, I am amazed by the chain of hashgacha pratis that ensured that I was precisely in the right place at the right time. The lecture went on for more than three hours, and I sat in my seat, completely stunned. The doctor was describing me, my life; it was as if he had been following me around forever, observing me from birth to the present time. It was the grandmother of all aha! moments, one that completely stopped me in my tracks and made every piece of the puzzle that was my life fall into place. For the first time in a very long while, I felt the stirring of hope. Going gluten-free seemed a small price to pay if it would lead me to answers I never thought I’d get. For days after the lecture, I walked around in a daze, processing, processing. At my next visit with my nutritionist, I discussed what I had learned, and ever the pragmatist, she suggested that I try the diet and see what would happen. At that point, I didn’t have a gastroenterologist. I had lost trust in my old one and never replaced him. I now know that, had I seen one then, before I went gluten-free, I would have likely received a definitive diagnosis. But I know of no way to change the past... Starting on the very day I saw my nutritionist, I cut out all gluten from my diet. Within days, I started feeling better, and just kept improving. I felt incredible, as if I could accomplish anything. At first I thought that this gluten-free diet was making me hyperactive, because I suddenly had so much energy, more than I knew what to do with! But no worries, I figured that out very quickly…

Insomnia is the most common of sleep disorders. Anyone can have a sleepless night here and there, but insomniacs have difficulty falling asleep and/ or maintaining their sleep states for up to THREE MONTHS in short-term cases of insomnia, or for even longer in cases of CHRONIC INSOMNIA.
Some people with insomnia have thermo-regulatory difficulties that prevent their bodies from sufficiently COOLING OFF in preparation for sleep. By simply lowering their heating to within the ideal zone of between 60 to 67 degrees, many insomniacs report feeling cooler and subsequently falling asleep in a deeper sleep.
Insomnia can be caused by a stress response system run amok due to anxiety or medical issues. For these sufferers, bedtime is when their bodies flood with cortisol and other hormones, raising their heart rates and blood pressure, and causing their bodies to enter a state of HYPERAROUSAL. If they do manage to sleep at all, they might awaken too early or manage only fitful sleep. Treating the underlying emotional and/or medical issues can help resolve this form of insomnia.
174 / THE MONSEY VIEW
BY THE NUMBERS Roughly 30% of our lives should be spent sleeping. About 35% of adults don’t get a full seven hours per day. Americans average 6.8 hours of sleep per night. The average amount of sleep in 1910 was 9 hours per person. Almost 20% of car accidents are associated with sleepiness. Falling asleep should take about 10 minutes. About 30% of U.S. adults suffer from insomnia and 10% from chronic insomnia. About 40% of all insomniacs have a coexisting psychiatric condition.
TIPS FOR HITTING THE SACK Having a hard time falling asleep? These tips might help. • Make sure your room is not too warm. The ideal temperature for most people is around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. • Try not to do computer work in the three hours prior to sleep. White light can prevent natural melatonin from doing its job. • Keep your room dark! • If you don’t fall asleep within a short while, leave the room until you feel drowsy. Your brain should associate your bed only with rest. • Use a white noise machine if outside sounds are disturbing you. • Try to avoid napping during the day. • Don’t rush for the melatonin! For most people, melatonin is not recommended for frequent use. It is a hormone and can be addictive. Speak to your doctor about other options first.

FATAL FAMILIAL INSOMNIA (FFI) Fatal Familial Insomnia is insomnia at its worst. FFI is a neurodegenerative disease that ultimately ends in fatality. The condition is known to occur in fewer than 100 families worldwide, but is a terror for the families it affects. The condition has been noted in patients as young as 18, but the onset of FFI is more common at around age 50. Patients with FFI simply stop sleeping. At the same time, their autonomic nervous system begins to go haywire, often causing profuse sweating, muscle twitches, incontinence and additional unpleasant symptoms. Hallucinations are common. Most patients succumb to the disease within a few months. It is truly a tragic condition, and even induced comas have not been fully effective in helping sufferers sleep.
THE MILITARY METHOD This method is said to have been developed by the U.S. Navy preflight school to combat sleep deprivation in troops during World War II. They say you’ll be asleep in a matter of minutes once you’ve mastered the technique. Does it work? Not sure, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to try! 1. Relax all the muscles in your face. 2. Drop your shoulders and release tension. 3. Drop your hands to the sides of your body. 4. Relax your chest and exhale. 5. Clear your mind and think of nothing for ten seconds. 6. if you don’t fall asleep right away, tell yourself “don’t think,” again and again.

Oy, I wish he’d…
Ahhhh….!
Oh, it’s only you. I had such a fright.
What were you thinking about?
I was thinking about my son. I want to see him settled with a good parnassah. But what? What can he do for parnassah?
Maybe open a fabric shop for him?
Nah, I don’t think so.
I have an idea!
176 / THE MONSEY VIEW
Um… maybe… maybe a bakery?
What?
Buy him barrels of wine, and tell him to open a pub! It’s a very good business! All of the goyim in the village will come buy wine from him.
Oh, no — he can’t bake.
Yes, thank you, thank you! I will do just as you suggested!
This way, please. The tavern will be here.
BO OM !
These barrels are filled with the choicest wines! You can now open a pub and earn a generous parnassah. But —
You see, son? All of this is yours.
Baruch Hashem, nothing happened! The barrel is intact, no wine spilled. These are extra-sturdy barrels! But son — remember!

Oh no!
Remember to leave the drinking for the village drunkards. You shouldn’t drink any of it! Your only interest is the profit you will make from it.
What should I remember, Father?
WHAT DOES THIS TELL US? Hashem told Am Yisroel: “And you shall be for Me a kingdom of Kohanim and a holy nation” (19:6). With these words, Hashem is telling us: “I created many pleasures in this world — many fine things, many pleasurable things. All of these wonderful things I created only for Yisroel — for you! “But don’t waste your time on the pleasures of this world. Don’t forget your main purpose. The main thing is that you be a holy nation. Keep constantly in mind the reward that awaits you at the end!” (The Dubno Maggid)
