I am... Mrs. C. B. Landau FOUNDER, REFUAH HELPLINE
THIS IS OUR LIFE’S MISSION! I am grateful to Hashem that we had the opportunity to dedicate the last 25 years of our life to Refuah Helpline and our ailing brothers and sisters; to stand by their side with all forms of medical aid and provide necessary advice as they make life-altering decisions. It has been HKB”H’s plan for us to have this form of chesed BE our life. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and every occasion, our team stands ready to help Cholei Yisroel on their path to a refuah shleimah. We currently have over 30 staff members servicing thousands of patient files around the world! With tremendous siyata dishmaya, we are trying to meet the demand, even with 450 calls coming into our office every day. But the lifesaving referral work, the medical research, case management, networking with top hospitals and professionals, the critical hospital transfers, the supporting of patients’ families and more, cost us MILLIONS each year and it’s a burden we can’t carry alone.
Right now, YOU can ensure the continuity of our holy mission! By taking part in our 36hour campaign this Tuesday-Wednesday September 1-2, you will ensure that these vital services continue to be made available to Cholei Yisroel and their families. My fellow Yidden, I turn to you today, pleading: In the names of Acheinu Bnei Yisroel battling for their lives, please help us in this lofty mission! Help us save the lives of our fellow Yidden! Those who’ve benefited from Refuah Helpline’s efforts know the critical importance of our efforts. Let’s help those still struggling, and in return, may we never have to ever know of such anguish!

I am Shloimy
I’M 19. MY LIFE IS NOTHING LIKE MY PEERS’
FROM MONSEY
My friends are in yeshiva while I’m in bed. Instead of rebbes and chavrusos, I have doctors and nurses. The Refuah Helpline caseworkers remind us that we’re not alone, though; every test and every appointment sees them by my side, and my doctors have an amazing respect for them! Whether it’s top notch research, or arranging for lab work to be done in the convenience of my home, the case managers are always on the case! They oversee every aspect of my ordeal as if they are family members. And they truly are! Be thankful for your health and help grant me the same.

addiction. It’s a scary word for most people. For good reason.
But it is no longer being swept under the rug.
You are no longer alone The answer for the frum community is Archstone Behavioral Health. Yes, there is a kosher family response.
Archstone Behavioral Health is a state-ofthe-art rehabilitation center in Palm Beach, Florida providing treatment for addiction while maintaining the sensitivities needed for a frum patient and their family. Their comprehensive family program helps individuals develop a strong clinical road map, directing long term recovery.
Call Moshe
The center is led by Moshe A. Yachnes, LCSW, CSAT, who has years of experience in this field, and has educated many in the frum community on the effective evidence-based treatment protocols available. Archstone, which accepts all major insurances, has been providing high-quality mental health services for nearly 20 years.

BEAUTY CLOSER TO HOME (Re: Tunnel Stunners, Issue 262) In your tunnel pictorial there was a breathtaking image of the Guoliang Tunnel in China. But you don’t have to travel that far for a heart-stopping experience like it. Have you visited Mount Washington in New Hampshire? Driving up the tallest mountain in the Northeast is not for the faint of heart. Its road has no fence, but the view is spectacular. D.R.
A FIVE-STAR RATING (Re: FYI: Outdoor Home Maintenance, Issue 262) I’m of the school of thought that reviews on products and ideas are not an accurate reflection of the overall satisfaction rates, and I proved it once more. Human nature is that when you enjoy something you don’t necessarily bother to comment, but when you take issue with it, you somehow find time to voice it. For every bad review shared, a product or service just might have many good reviews that people simply didn’t take the time to share... Here goes the review I’ve promised to write many times in the past: I wait for each Wednesday when I can pick up The Monsey View at the stands. I make sure to keep it in a safe place until Shabbos when I get to read it from cover to cover.

INBOX The Inbox, The Cuckoo Clock, and the recipes are three specifics that I would like to give you kudos for. Thank you, thank you, thank you! And now, the reason I finally did write is because after reading your FYI section this past week about outdoor maintenance, I would like to pose a question to anybody who has experience with lawn care. I recently moved to a house with a very well-kept lawn and was trying to maintain it, but when summer rolled in, the weeds came with it, and I soon realized that it’s taking over my lawn. Any idea how to kill the weeds and prevent the issue in the future? T.L.
AN OVERFLOW OF SWEETNESS (Re: A Slice of Sweetness, Issue 258) I made the cappuccino cake you featured and divided the batter between two loaf pans, as was mentioned as an alternative option in your food section. The cake was delicious! I found, though, that there was a bit too much batter for two pans. I’d like to know which loaf pans you recommend. E.T. LEAH STERN RESPONDS: While it worked for some readers, we received feedback that others also had the experience of the batter running over when divided between two loaf pans. You can divide this cake batter in three, and put each part in Propack 6223 pan for great results.
LIFTING THE LOCKS (Re: To Happy Hair Days, Issue 256) I’d like to express my greatest
// Talk of Town
appreciation to The Monsey View for creating such an amazing magazine. After following along the back and forth of shared hair care tips, I’d like to ask if anyone has some ideas on how to care for my daughter’s oily, but frizzy and dull, hair. Thank you in advance! Hair-Challenged
YOUR VOICE WATCH THE WASTE I’m not one to write in all my grievances to a magazine, yet yesterday I witnessed an appalling sight that left me quite disturbed. I was waiting on the pickup line for the school food boxes when I saw a couple of girls pick up their boxes. Immediately upon leaving the distribution area they proceeded to remove the bottles of milk from their boxes and throw them into the dumpster on the school property. I am not sure how throwing out milk is okay anywhere, but blatantly throwing it out seconds after receiving it was a horrible thing to witness. What terrible baal tashchis! As someone who is involved with food distribution for the needy families in our communities throughout the year, I find this especially hurtful. What kind of message are we sending to our children when we are okay with throwing out a perfectly good and fresh bottle of milk? What kind of message are we sending to our children when we are taking far more food boxes than are allotted for us and disposing of what we don’t need or want? I know that we are now faced with an abundance of
milk. There are still plenty of people within our community who do not have milk: non-Jewish hired help, adults without children in the school system, etc. It may take time to have the milk placed, but there are people who will take it and enjoy it. We need to be our children’s role models and teach them that food needs to be respected. We make a bracha on food to thank Hashem for our bounty. In this week’s parsha, we learn about the aveirah of baal tashchis. It is discussed how in the times of Rabbi Yehuda Hanassi in Bavel, food was plentiful. He once saw children playing with food and throwing around loaves of bread. By looking at that, he realized that as long as food was in abundance and plentiful people would not treat it with respect. The Yidden were then cursed, and it stopped raining. The crops began to die, and the people began to starve. Only then did they realize how important food is. They did teshuvah, and it began to rain again. In the merit of being more careful with food, may we be zoche to shefa and bracha in our lives. Grateful for the Abundance

Utility Companies Facing Penalties and Possible Franchise Losses Over Poor Storm Handling With power outages lasting a week or longer for tens of thousands of customers in the New York area, Governor Andrew Cuomo slammed four area utility providers for their abysmal response to Tropical Storm Isaias, threatening to pull their franchises. Cuomo’s remarks came amid the initial stages of a New York State Department of Public Service investigation into Con Edison, Orange & Rockland, PSEG Long Island and Central Hudson’s handling of the storm. Notice of Apparent Violation letters have been sent to all four electric companies as well as Altice-Optimum advising them that they face potentially significant fines and that immediate corrective measures need to be taken to protect customers as the hurricane season continues. According to Cuomo, the initial phase of the DPS inquiry determined that both Con Edison and Orange & Rockland failed to properly serve customers by having inaccurate com-
munications, website problems and inadequate prestaging for Isaias. The governor noted that this is the first time that the Department of Public Service has issued violation letters at the start of an investigation that is being moved along quickly, with a six-month completion target for a process that normally takes one to two years. Cuomo has warned that the state could terminate its agreements with the utility companies and has also looped the state’s Department of Financial Services into the review of the storm response. Legislation being proposed by the governor will address numerous issues associated with a potential franchise loss, which would include the ownership of the util-

ity’s assets, including substations, cables and trucks, and how they could be transferred to a new entity. “These utility companies predict when we’re going to have storms and when we’re going to have emergencies,” observed Cuomo. “That’s the art form of the business and what we pay them for. They need to do better, and we are holding them accountable.” Approximately 1.3 million New Yorkers lost power in storm-related outages.
Virtual Learning Followed by Blended Program for East Ramapo’s Public Schools It will be an all-virtual program for public school students in the East Ramapo School District, at least for September, with some not setting foot into an actual classroom until late November. Sources told The Monsey View that busing for private school students is likely to be provided, since the district is officially open even though public students will start the year learning at home. East Ramapo unveiled its four-stage plan last Friday, developed in conjunction with an educational consultation agency that charged $120,000 for its services, reported The Journal News. The plan covers approximately 9,000 students at fourteen different campuses who would be phased back into a blended program that will have children in classes for a four-day school week, followed by two weeks of virtual learning at home. All students at East Ramapo public schools would attend virtual classes through October 9, with the district supplying tablets to those who need them. Under the second part of the program, students in prioritized special education programs; kindergarten; and first, fourth, seventh and ninth grades would all start their blended learning programs in October. The next phase would have students in grades two, four, five, seven, eight, nine and ten beginning their three-week in-school/at-home rotation at the beginning and in the middle of November, with all others returning in phase four, which is set to begin on November 23. Schools will be closed on Fridays for the foreseeable future to allow for a weekly deep cleaning. The Suffern School District announced its plan two weeks ago to have students begin the year with an all-virtual learning program, saying that it would see how other districts fare before making any changes to its plans. East Ramapo Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Nateasha McVea told participants at a virtual town hall meeting earlier in the month that plans may be modified as the area’s
coronavirus rates change. She noted that the district has been working hard to keep the year as school-like as possible for students. “We are responding to a serious health crisis at this time,” said McVea. “First and foremost, the health of our students and staff are paramount.”
Court Ruling Clears the Way for Plastic Bag Ban to Resume The plastic shopping bag ban that was temporarily set aside amid coronavirus worries is set to resume soon, now that an Albany Supreme Court justice has rejected a challenge posed by a Long Island plastic bag manufacturer. Hamodia reported that Judge Gerald Connolly ruled in favor of the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation last Thursday, rejecting claims that the plastic bag ban was flawed, posed an insurmountable financial hardship and was unsafe during the pandemic. Connolly also struck down an exemption to the ban that allowed stores to use thicker-gauge plastic bags. No further legal challenges to the bag law are expected to be raised when the state legislative session resumes next year, according to Democrat & Chronicle. The DEC said that it will begin providing 30-day notices to state stores and businesses as required by law before they begin enforcing the ban again. “The court’s decision is a victory and a vindication of New York State’s efforts to end the scourge of single-use bags and a direct rebuke to the plastic bag manufacturers who tried to stop our law,” said DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos.

Recap: Both Rosenblit, the lawyer, and Blumi Hartstein’s private investigator turn up the information that the man behind all of the generous gifts is Joe Ludmir. And then Emmanuel, too, discloses the same information. Elisheva’s father tells her that Yosef Ludmir is his old friend Gustav, but he can’t imagine that Gustav would be so generous to him. After all, Gustav had abandoned him once they’d arrived in Eretz Yisroel. Maybe he’d gotten mixed up, her father had said. That sentence echoed in Elisheva’s mind the entire following day, both at work in the morning and during the busy afternoon with the children at home — even later in the day, when Miri popped in with baby Shmuely and Tzippy also turned up without calling in advance. Throughout it all, as the large dining room filled with cheerful shouts and cries, just like the dining room in the old house, Elisheva remained thoughtful. She made a large vegetable salad, fried omelets, put up a pot of soup for the next day, and packed containers of food for her married daughters. And she kept asking herself: What if Ludmir had made a mistake? The only Ludmir she’d ever heard of was that friend of her father’s. And if, indeed, he was the millionaire who seemed to be behind all of these strange events over the past ten months, then it was very likely that there was a mistake here. What did he and Tatty have with each other these days? What was this sudden spirit of philanthropy toward her family that had taken hold of Ludmir?
And based on what Emmanuel had blurted out to Eliyahu, it was not just a spurt of generosity; Ludmir considered this an old debt. This just made the whole thing even stranger. “Mommy?” Tzippy finally asked before she left. “Is everything okay?” “Yes, baruch Hashem,” she said, putting a facsimile of her regular smile on her face. “And how about you? What’s with that substituting job at the cheder office?” “Oh, like I told you, I’ll be working there again this week. My friend Avigail is moving to her apartment in Modiin Illit, so I’m taking over the subbing job she started. Didn’t you hear me telling you about it before?” “Oh. Maybe I was in the kitchen just then,” Elisheva said quickly, widening her grin. But when smiles like these are stretched, they don’t really grow; they just become more transparent and fake. So Tzippy had been telling her about her subbing job... She hadn’t even heard. Because what would happen if they would have to give everything back? “Tell me, Elisheva, are you sure you’re all there?” Blumi demanded later that night, when Elisheva found a place to pour out her strange fears and worries.

And maybe Blumi was right, and she wasn’t all there. “What do you mean, he could ask you to give it back?” Blumi continued. “First of all, if you’re afraid, we can stop all these inquiries right now and go back to the way things were before: Korman, of blessed memory, funded your daughter’s wedding, you won an apartment in a raffle, and what else was there? Someone bought a cuckoo clock from you for a crazy price, and an Arab contractor had a strange dream so he came by for a visit… and that’s it. What happened? Nothing. No need to investigate.” “But we already did investigate,” Elisheva said quietly. “And even if there were times when I suddenly got scared and didn’t want to know the truth — if there was a truth — now I feel that we’re at the point of no return. We can’t turn the clock back anymore. Tell me, Blumi, was this Korman also a partner in Joe Ludmir’s bank accounts?” “Yes. And not only that, but Joe Ludmir was the closest soul to him, and he was his custodian in his final years. He had power of attorney over the accounts, and he could do anything. Anything, you hear?” “So he could have also easily deceived our lawyer, if you’re saying that he could have done anything he wanted in Korman’s name.” “Anything,” Blumi affirmed. “How old is he, this Ludmir? They told us that Korman was over ninety.” “Korman really was quite old, and he had no family. Those are the only accurate details in the whole story you were told. But Ludmir, his partner, is much younger. He isn’t even eighty yet.” “So it makes sense.” “What makes sense, that he’s your father’s childhood friend?” “Yes.” “Maybe.” “Especially since the first name is the same — Yosef, Joe.

One’s an Anglicized nickname of the other… But why would he be pouring money onto us like this? Elisheva paced around the house, doing nothing but holding the phone. Riki and Devorah, who were cleaning the kitchen, heard a few fragments of sentences, and they glanced at one another. “Did something go wrong?” Devorah whispered. “I hope not,” Riki replied. “But it looks like something happened either with this house or with Tzippy’s apartment — and it’s all really the same.” Elisheva didn’t hear them. “You said that the nursing home worker spoke about a debt or something,” Blumi said. “But my father claims that there was no such thing.” “Is it possible that he simply does not remember?” Blumi asked. Her words — she made no effort to speak quietly — were heard only by Batsheva, who had no other ears with which to share her own puzzlement. “No, chas v’shalom; his memory is excellent, bli ayin hara. I’m telling you again — my father, may he live and be well, is still young. He’s seventy-five, maybe seventysix, not more. He just had a stroke that really aged him a lot.” “Oh, I didn’t mean the senior type of forgetting. I meant the type of forgetting that we all have, and especially little kids… If your father was only born during the war, then how could he remember everything that happened then? Maybe he did give his friend something at a very young age?” “Something that was valuable enough that in order to repay it seventy years later, the friend needed to give us a penthouse apartment, fund a wedding, and try to push money at us in every possible way? It’s a lot more reasonable to assume that he simply made a mistake, Blumi.” Elisheva walked into her bed-
room and opened the closet. It was arranged differently than how she’d been used to it in the old house, because of the placement of the door in this room. The drawers were on the left side, the hanging stuff was in the middle, and the shelves were on the right side. She hadn’t really liked it at first, but she was finally getting used to it. Maybe getting used to these
“No, I don’t know,” Elisheva said tiredly. “I just know that if I got something that is not mine, I don’t want to have it in my possession for even one minute. Even though — ” and she suddenly burst into tears, and leaped up to close the door to her room “ — it will be so hard for me to go back to being Elisheva from the small, crowded apartment.” To Blumi’s credit, she remained tactful and didn’t respond with something like, “Don’t worry; I’ll help you out.” Instead, after a moment of deliberation, she asked, “Do you have a tissue?” “Yes…” Elisheva sniffed. Another few moments of silence elapsed. “I’m sorry I’m crying,” Elisheva said when her voice stabilized. “I don’t know what happened to me.” “It’s very normal,” Blumi said, quoting the second psychologist she’d gone to, who would say that whenever she would burst into tears with no prior warning. “It’s… it’s a fear of sorts.” “That’s right. I was so happy for my children. For Tzippy, for Miri, whom we can help out some more now, and for the children at home who have more space, and better food and clothes. And for my father, who will be able to move in with us, and the sefer Torah we donated in his family’s memory that made him so happy…” She fell silent again, feeling totally drained. Then she added tonelessly, “Of course, I was also happy for myself all the way through.” “Also,” Blumi said. “Jewish mother that you are. Tell me, Elisheva, do you know the midrash about Eliyahu Hanavi and the deposit?” “The one he gave the poor couple for a set amount of time?” “Yes. And the woman wrote down all the acts of tzedakah that they did with the money. And

kinds of things was superfluous, if they would be going back to the old house soon. Maybe they would soon be feeling that same confused sensation, like after a surprising dream that takes you to some far-off place… No, they could not go back there so soon. The contract that they had signed with the tenants who were renting their old apartment wouldn’t be up before a year. So what would they do? Start wandering from one rental to the next? “You’re not listening to me, Elisheva,” Blumi said. “Sorry,” Elisheva apologized. “I began arranging the shelves in my closet, and I was thinking about something. What did you say?” “Now I say that your shelves are probably very organized already, and that you don’t need to do any more organizing. But before that I said that even if it is Joe Ludmir’s mistake, with all due respect, I’m not sure he can just come and take everything back right now.” “Not sure in what way?” “Legally, halachically, ethically… Do you know how such things work?”

when he returned to take it back — ” “She showed him everything they had done. Yes, I’m familiar with it.” “And he left the money with them permanently,” Blumi finished. Elisheva was quiet. Was Blumi trying to promise her that everything would stay as it was? That in the merit of doing good things with the money they had received, everything would turn out to be a non-mistake? What was she trying to say? “I’m not Eliyahu Hanavi,” Blumi answered the tacit question. “I didn’t give you anything, and I didn’t take anything away from you. I just want you to notice — what do you think, that the woman didn’t buy better food for her children with that money? And clothes? And that they didn’t fix the broken windows, or the beds, or the stacks of hay, or whatever they had then? And that she wasn’t happy with all of this?” “Probably.” “She did exactly what she needed to do with the money she’d been given. And so did you. Is that clear?” “I think so.” It wasn’t always easy to follow Blumi’s train of thought, but now Elisheva actually felt like she did understand. And something about the simple — albeit deep — message was very encouraging. “Good. Just tell me, do you want me to try to convey a message to Ludmir that you know who he is? That you would want to make contact with him, or at least hear about his motivations?” “Or tell him thank you…” Elisheva murmured. “It’s an important question, Blumi.” She took a deep breath and stood up to close her open closet doors. “I can’t decide this myself, though. I’ll ask my husband, and we’ll see, all right?” To be continued...

Democratic Convention Concludes THE PULSE: The Democratic National Convention drew
to a close on Thursday night with the acceptance speech of Joe Biden as the party’s 2020 nominee. The convention portrayed a vision of unity for America and highlighted speakers from across the political spectrum. Below are some of the highlights:
support from the progressive flank of the party who feel that he is too focused on appealing to centrist elements of the party. THE OLD GUARD: The convention featured speeches and messages from recent Democratic presidents and presidential nominees. Former presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama addressed the convention as did former party nominees senators John Kerry and Hillary Clinton. President Obama used his address to issue his sharpest criticism of the Trump administration to date.
THE 2020 PRIMARY CANDIDATES: Biden’s 2020 prima-
ry candidates came out in force to back his candidacy. Former candidates appeared throughout the convention. Keynote addresses were delivered by senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar. Warren and Sanders’ support is essential for Biden, as he has received lukewarm
116 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 26, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
THE REPUBLICANS: Several Republicans crossed the aisle to express their support for the Biden candidacy. Former Ohio Governor John Kasich delivered a keynote address. Cindy McCain spoke about her late husband John McCain’s close relationship with Joe Biden. Former New Jersey Gov-
ernor Christine Todd Whitman and former Pennsylvania Congressman Charlie Dent both issued endorsements for Biden. General Colin Powell, who served in the Bush administration (and has supported Democrats in the past), also addressed the convention. It is not that unusual for a party to highlight support from members of an opposing party. Democratic Governor Zell Miller of Georgia spoke in support of George W. Bush in 2004, and Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman spoke in favor of John McCain’s candidacy in 2008. However, the number of Republican crossovers and the amount of time allotted to Republicans at this convention is a testament to the Biden campaign’s attempts to show that he can appeal to all Americans. Many progressives griped that Republicans received more speaking time than leaders of their movement. THE STORIES: The convention also highlighted the per-
sonal life stories of individual Americans. Ady Barkan, who has ALS, spoke about how he has benefited from the ACA/ Obamacare and how he backs Biden’s plans for health care. Brayden Harrington, a thirteen-year-old boy who stutters, spoke about how Joe Biden helped him overcome his speech impediment. Michael Beale talked about how Joe Biden unexpectedly showed up for a shivah call to a woman who had donated $18 to all his campaigns beginning with the first time he ran in 1972. Much focus was placed on Biden’s personal life story, emphasizing how he coped with multiple tragedies in his life, such as the death of his wife and young child in a car accident in 1972 and the death of his son Beau at age 46 from brain cancer. THE FAMILIES: Joe Biden’s wife addressed the convention, as did the Biden children and grandchildren. Kamala Harris’ sister also spoke about her family and her sister’s fighting spirit. KAMALA HARRIS: Harris addressed the convention on
Wednesday night and received mixed reviews. Her address was considered good but not memorable, and it did not hit many highs. JOE BIDEN: Joe Biden delivered what many consider to be
the best speech of his career. Expectations were low, as Biden has a tendency to make gaffes, and many on the right have been arguing that his mental acuity is showing signs of decline. However, Biden rose to the occasion and delivered a tight, passionate and moving speech. He called out President Trump’s response to Charlottesville and his categorization of “very fine people on both sides.” He called on the country to unite and put hatred and division behind it. Fox News’ Chris Wallace called the speech “enormously effective,” and Fox’s Dana Perino said that Biden “hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth.” Republican strategist Karl Rove concurred that it was “a very good speech.” THE IMPACT: Despite the unusual virtual format due to
COVID-19, the DNC convention was billed as a success. Polls show that the Biden-Harris ticket received a bounce from the convention week. However, convention bounces tend to dis-
sipate, and it remains to be seen if the Democrats can channel the energy of the convention into a strong grassroots campaign.
Republicans Announce RNC Roster THE PULSE: The Republican National Convention will take
place Monday through Thursday. It, too, will be a mostly virtual event. President Trump will speak each night of the convention and deliver his keynote acceptance speech on Thursday night from the White House lawn. Trump’s children, Don Jr., Ivanka, Eric and Tiffany, are scheduled to address the convention. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy will speak as well. Mark and Patricia McCloskey, the St. Louis couple who waved their guns at black lives matter protesters approaching their property, will also be given a speaking slot. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani will endorse the president and make a case for reelection. Alice Marie Johnson, who was convicted for cocaine trafficking and received clemency from the president after spending 21 years in prison, will speak about the president’s work for criminal justice reform. Noticeably absent will be former Republican President George Bush and 2008 Republican nominee Senator Mitt Romney. THE IMPACT: According to Axios, the convention’s theme
will focus on the forgotten men and women of America. The convention will also include a nightly 10 p.m. surprise. The convention will undoubtedly highlight the accomplishments of President Trump’s first term. It will seek to convince Americans to allow him to finish the job and elect him to a second term.
Convention Counter Programming THE PULSE: According to past political norms, an opposing
party ceases to campaign during their opponent’s convention. However, this year is anything but ordinary. President Donald Trump held campaign events and responded in real time during the week of the DNC. The Democrats intend to follow suit and have released a slate of counter-programming that will run concurrently to the RNC. Additionally, a convention of Never Trump Republicans billed as the Convention of Founding Principles will be running a full slate of speakers parallel to the RNC. Their list includes former RNC Chairman Michael Steele, former Freedom Caucus member Mark Sanford (who shortly ran against Trump in the primaries), and Former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci. THE IMPACT: The bitter partisan divide and the heated po-
litical rancor gripping America has caused politicians to do away with many unwritten rules of political engagement. Advances in technology have also contributed to these developments. It remains to be seen if these new norms will become established for future campaigns.

BAKING BREAD WITH LOVE
Wheat and Oat Rolls
Baking bread is an art symbolized by the mitzvah of hafrashas challah. In previous generations, women were lauded for providing their families with bread, their main source of sustenance. Today, too, you can gift your family a slice of homemade wholesomeness. It’s a great way to kick off new beginnings. By: Leah Stern Photography: by C. Tarkieltaub

W H O L E-W H E AT L OAV E S Delicious and nutritious, these are approved by the most finicky of eaters! This recipe consists of a 60/40 blend. To make the dough using only whole-wheat flour, increase the water to six cups.
Ingredients
Ingredients
3 lb. Grain Brain whole-wheat flour
11 oz. warm water 1½ T. Grain Brain organic sugar 4 T. olive oil 4½ cups Grain Brain light spelt flour
2 lb. Grain Brain white flour
5½ cups warm water
3½ oz. honey
4 level T. salt
4 level T. Grain Brain yeast
6 oz. oil
Directions
2 tsp. kosher salt 2 tsp. Grain Brain dry yeast
1. Place the flours in a bowl. 2. Make a well, then pour in the honey and yeast.
Directions 1. Set the bread machine to a basic 2-pound loaf recipe. (My machine takes two hours. You can set your machine on a timer, if you’d like.)
3. Add 2 cups of water, and wait three minutes until the yeast starts to activate. 4. Add salt, oil and the rest of the water.
2. Place the water, sugar and oil in the bowl.
5. Knead until a soft dough forms. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes, and then knead the dough for another 3 minutes.
3. Pour the flour over those ingredients.
6. Cover the dough and allow it to rise for 1 hour.
4. Put the salt on one side of the bowl and the yeast on the other side, taking care that these two ingredients don’t touch each other.
7. Punch down the dough and divide it into four equal pieces. Roll out each piece into a rectangle.
5. Start the machine. Enjoy the results! Note: This recipe can be made with wholewheat flour; add an additional 2 ounces water.
8. Roll up each rectangle tightly and place it in a large loaf pan. 9. Cover the loaves, and allow them to rise for 20 minutes. 10. Set the oven at 350°. Place the loaves in the cold oven and bake for 1 hour. 11. To make rolls: Divide the dough into 28 pieces. Form balls. Bake at 350° for 40 minutes.

Taking inventory of your closets and restocking your child’s wardrobe is no small adventure. And whether you are a mustmatch enthusiast or a color-coordinating expert, you will naturally gravitate toward the store whose service makes the adventure pleasant and worthwhile. It may be hard to think past the here and now as you browse, like, try and purchase, but the fact is that those clothes did not grow on the shelves. The Monsey View turned to the powers behind our local stores for an inside view on what it takes to keep Monsey fashionistas well-dressed and happy — and ready for yom tov. 132 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 26, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Preparation is key for any seller of children’s wear. Back when the April showers are doing their part to bring out the first green shoots of spring, Mrs. Bruchie Weiser of Prince and Princess is already thinking suedes and furs. Likewise, Mrs. Chana Rifky Fisch of Lily and Todd had already ordered the winter inventory for 2021 at the close of winter 2020. And for stores that carry their own private labels or custom designs, thinking even more far ahead is a must. Prince and Princess seldom creates custom designs, as it gets tough and can often be the cause of much headache. Mrs. Fisch, on the other hand, finds it worthwhile to custom-design, and so Lily and Todd does carry some private labels. As for Mrs. Pfeifer of Children’s Outlet, 90% of her inventory is designed exclusively for her store. Faster than we can fill our closets, styles are constantly evolving and changing. As one trend becomes
the rage, the previous fad turns sour, and keeping shop in this ever-changing fashion industry is a challenge of its own. Ordering the right quantities of every product in each size takes clever speculation as well as a meticulous count of going inventory so stores don’t run short or overstock. Mrs. Pfeifer says that experience has taught her that every season is different. Before the school season, when children are in uniform, weekday clothes will mostly be going in preschool sizes, whereas summertime will find skirts for teenagers disappearing off the racks. Mrs. Weiser explains that the quantity of each item ordered depends on its character. If it’s a basic pair of gray pants, then they can easily order ten in each size, but in order to avoid getting stuck with extra inventory, or fall short in supply, “we need to judge carefully,” she says. While the back-and-forth of vendor-dealing is hard work, it is exciting and gratifying at the same time. Mrs. Weiser enjoys the themes many designers use for their entire line each season. One designer, for instance, incorporated rainbows in all of her products; their girls’ sweaters, boys’ pants and baby jumpsuits all sported a rainbow motif. Mrs. Fisch found it amusing when one of her sellers took it to the next level, offering matching clothes not only for the kids, but for their parents as well! WE ASKED OUR LOYAL SHOPKEEPERS to share their perspective and tell us about how things in children’s boutiques have changed over the years. Mrs. Fisch reveals that while the cost of products didn’t see any drastic changes, it is the fashion that is changing more rapidly than ever — not only from year to year, but from one season to the next. In one given year, she can be busy with three different makes of girls’ skirts; one season printed designs are all the rage, the next they’re all in solid colors, and before you know it, only strictly black goes. Mrs. Goldberger from F&F reminisces about the purchasing mindset of 30 years ago when women would buy clothes that could last for two seasons. They would hem the lengths so it worked for this season, and then let it down come the next. “Today our customers buy sizes that fit here and now.”
As one trend becomes the rage, the previous fad turns sour, and keeping shop in this everchanging fashion industry is a challenge of its own. August 26, 2020 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 133 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

In Mrs. Weiser’s opinion, we are now living on the cutting edge more than ever before. Styles are changing so fast, and anyone with a mind for fashion can tell when a particular item was bought. It’s as if the clothes have an expiration date, and customers are reluctant to purchase something of last year’s stock.
Ordering the right quantities of every product in each size takes clever speculation as well as a meticulous count of going inventory so stores don’t run short or overstock. Mrs. Weiser shares that shoppers like to get undivided attention when they shop, and so at Prince and Princess, they increase their staff during busy seasons and train all of their employees to swiftly analyze each child, try to determine what the customer would like, and direct them to the clothes that would fit well and match their budget. As she says, “Customer service is an art.” Mrs. Pfeifer from Children’s Outlet explains that aside from putting in extra hours before the erev yom tov scramble begins, she focuses on expanding her customer service staff and training her employees to reach out to each customer and make sure that each one gets assisted in the most helpful way possible. Some customers appreciate the effort, and as is always the case when dealing with people, some don’t. Mrs. Goldberger from F&F overstocks the basics during the summer months to ensure that the stock does not run low when customers need the items. They also keep more registers open to prevent their store from turning into an endless waiting room. Anything to keep their customers happy. NOW, AS YOU TAKE TO THE SHOPS this erev yom tov, don’t be remiss in expressing your appreciation to the shopkeepers, who’ve been preparing for this season’s line before you even thought of summer.
The Monsey View would like to thank Mrs. Weiser, Mrs. Fisch, Mrs. Pfeifer and Mrs. Goldberger for sharing their time with us!

I WAS ABOUT 25 YEARS OLD
when I figured it all out. I mean, seriously, what’s the point of all those magazine articles sharing tips on frugal buying? It’s a no-brainer!
Well. Today I am no longer 25, and the magazines are still printing those articles. Apparently, The Problem has not yet been resolved, even though we can all chant the usual tips in our sleep: Buy end-of-season (seriously? Your teen will wear this year’s style next year?). Take advantage of major sales (wow, I never thought of that!). Check the clearance aisle first (another Einstein moment!). Be prepared with a list, grab the sales, never buy something just because it’s on sale, compare prices, stack coupons… How about admitting that if these ideas work for us, then we’re doing them already, and if they don’t — well, they won’t suddenly begin accomplishing any new magic now? Let’s graduate to something a little more sophisticated than that. The first thing to keep in mind is that there is nothing that will really work for everyone. It’s nice to keep touting frugality as a virtue, but let’s face it: For some of us, that cheap find from China is only going to take up precious space in the drawer, leaving our wallet $15 skinnier on top of the money we will spend on the better brand. So assuming that the naturally frugal do already have it all figured out, here are a few things that may work for the rest of us.
Snagging those sales: Nice try, but most of us know the equation. While it’s true that waiting just a bit longer can make that coveted dress 70% cheaper, it also usually means that by then, most sizes will be gone. One idea is to do a bit of both: Buy one good item at full price so that you have something to start with, and then wait for the sales to do the rest of your shopping. This plan is not perfect, but it’s better than thinking that you need your entire winter wardrobe in time for Rosh Hashanah. As for smash-and-grab sales, that’s so personal; I’m not even going to
August 26, 2020 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 141 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
For those of you who do want the quick reminder, here’s a list of the most important no-nos: • Do NOT shop randomly. Know what you need before you leave the house, and stick to your list! • Do NOT buy an item just because it comes with a gift… that you likely don’t need (and even more likely are actually paying for). • Do NOT assume something is on sale just because it says it is. • Do NOT buy something you’re not crazy over just because it’s cheap. You know you’re not going to use it. • Do NOT go to the store hungry. (Yep, I mean it.) • Do NOT buy half an outfit with the intention of finding the perfect match for it in another store. Trust me, you will never find that second part of the outfit, and it will just end up taking up drawer real estate. • Do NOT get something that will last only as long as the first laundry (because it’s made too cheaply, or because it needs professional ironing, or because it’s white and your kids tend to eat with their fingers). • Do NOT buy three-packs if you only love two of the designs, or if you only need one of them. DO buy threepacks if they’re essentials you are definitely going to need at some point. • Do NOT use a shopping cart. You’re more likely to buy more if you can fill a cart than if you have to schlep the items around the store in your arms. And psychologically, an empty shopping cart alongside other buyers’ full ones shames a buyer into filling it more!
142 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 26, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
get into that. But to make an educated decision, remember the equation: You definitely pay less money during these community sales, but you do pay in other currencies, such as customer service and return policies (and oxygen).
How to make end-ofseason sales work: Theoretically, shopping end-of-the-season sales for next year is great. I just pulled out a stunning $70 dress that I got for my toddler for only $15 at the end of last winter. But what works for a three-year-old won’t work for a teen. And if those black-and-white sweaters are going to just sit in the closet because, who knows, we’ll be doing neon-colored geometrical shapes by then, you didn’t save money — you wasted money. This is what we did one year: At the end of the summer, my girls got beautiful, brand-name Shabbos dresses for a fraction of their original price. They wore their stunning new dresses for yom tov (that’s saving on an expensive, full-priced winter dress right there), and then we packed them up for the following year. The following summer, we pulled them out again. They were no longer as stylish, but since it was only six months later, it was still good enough to begin the season with — and we knew that we’d wait a bit, and then get them the new season’s wardrobe at lower prices, because we weren’t in a rush. Recently, as my own girls grew, I found that while older girls’ dresses are admittedly more expensive, they are also far more versatile. So now we get to shop during sales season for dresses that are appropriate all year long. A win-win! See? Beautiful math. You’re still buying end-of-season, but you’re using it immediately, while the product is still at its prime. Then, a bit later, you use it as a filler-item, and not as the main element in the wardrobe. (As an aside, end-of-season sales are great opportunities to stock up on baby gifts!)
And here are some great do’s too: • Wait! Sometimes just sleeping on it for a night helps you realize that you really don’t need that extra item on sale, and it’s not even that pretty anyway. • Look at that outfit in the store as if it’s already in your closet. Is it still exciting?
Be creative! Your preschooler doesn’t yet know that she “must” get a new outfit for yom tov. Why not make her happy with a pretty headband and new tights instead, and wait until Chanukah to shop? That’s when the stores fill their shelves with new merchandise, giving you the extra time to allow better deals to come your way. Less pressure and more time generally equal wiser choices! Headbands can be helpful in other ways, too. Ever noticed how almost anything can be completely transformed with a fabulous headband or adorable socks? Try getting a simple outfit and then dressing it up with a substantial hair accessory. Done right, your little girl will look like a million dollars with a much smaller investment on your part.
Be daring! Okay, this is almost scary to write. I, for one, am not one of those innovative people. (You know, the ones who happily use tile stickers and craft their own hammocks out of fallen tree branches.) I don’t want my dress to look like I pieced it all together, even if the idea does sound better on the pages of a magazine. However. Take a look at a dress you really, really like. What creates that wow effect? Most of the time the base is a plain dress, but there’s that really cool pocket or sleeves bunched up just so, or there’s that fur trimming, fun belt or row of buttons… You get the picture. And if Ying Yeu Hong could sew that piece on, so can you. You can get the most stunning results by taking a design you love and applying it to an otherwise plain dress. You’ll find yourself saving lots of money while creating the same effect! (A note of caution, though: There is no replacement for good-quality fabrics and sewing. So even when you get that base dress, get it from a reputable company. The only way to wear something that looks high-quality and sits well is if it actually does!)
• This is such a no-brainer that most of us always forget it: Look through your closets before heading out to shop! How many times did you spend on an entire new wardrobe only to discover that you already bought your boys extra T-shirts last year? • Follow your favorite stores’ markdown days. (Hint: In many stores it will be Tuesdays.) • For the very tiny super-organized minority among us: Take note of the styles and colors that look best on yourself or your kids. This may save you some decision-making in the stores. (However, don’t do what I did. I finally have a baby with red hair — and every single item in his wardrobe is black.) • Once in the store, close your eyes until you get to the back. The essentials are always there, forcing you to walk through endless and aggressive marketing in between. • Finished shopping? Now look through your closets again. Spend some time playing around with different combinations of items you already have. You may be able to put together even more outfits than you thought!

Tznius is beautiful! We’ve all had to do it — add that extra piece of fabric to the bottom of a dress to make it long enough to be truly tznius’dig. But sometimes adding the same color will make the piece just look like a patch. (Which is not bad, by the way — we are proud of what we just did!) In those cases, there are some tricks: Don’t add a gray or black piece to that alreadygray dress; find a different color or design or fabric for a completely new look. Or cut the dress’s hem way higher and start the new piece from there. My personal favorite is giving that girls’ dress to the seamstress, having her cut the hem asymmetrically, running up one side, and then adding a piece of fun fabric. Be creative, and you can turn an annoying patch into that wow factor that will turn the dress around!
Price comparisons: These are great… if you do them at home. Once you are out in the streets, most of the time you will not save much — definitely not enough to justify hours and hours of running from one store to the next. Instead, utilize this prudent approach in two ways that will serve you, rather than having you serving them (always a good idea in general): One, compare prices from the comfort of your own home, and two, compare general prices rather than prices on individual items. Most of the time, the same stores you are al-

ready familiar with as better-priced will carry items for less money across the board.
Finally… make it fun! Shopping doesn’t have to be traumatic. (Okay, it doesn’t have to be only traumatic.) It’s okay to pamper yourself with one higher-end piece if you can, as long as you decide on it in advance and do not allow yourself to fall prey to bad decisions once out in the stores. It’s kind of like that cheat on a good diet — you can have it, but it needs to be planned. And speaking of planning, tell your kids in advance what you are going to buy — including the expected price range (if age-appropriate), style, and anything else your kids need to hear beforehand — and save yourself maddening negotiations next to suddenly-very-very-busy shoppers. Also, turn shopping into a game — for your kids and for yourself. Who can find socks for under $3? Hey, let’s see if we can find pants for Chezky within fifteen minutes! Who’s going to be the first to find a pair of blue shoes? And even if you won’t be buying those shoes, you will be keeping the kids occupied, making them part of the experience instead of the perpetually cranky tag-alongs. You’ll also be teaching them to feel proud when they find the “right” choice instead of coveting the easy and expensive. Here’s to happy, smart and somewhat frugal shopping!

Kids in the Cart? Cleaning the house while the kids are growing is like shoveling snow while it’s still snowing. Some people would say the same for shopping; after all, kids grow fast and styles change even faster. Either way, it doesn’t seem like we can get away with avoiding this task — and if we’re doing it anyway, why not hear from experts, almost-experts and non-experts to see what works for them?
When it comes to grocery shopping, I stick to my belief that even if I book the most expensive babysitter to supervise my kids and linger in the store for hours on end, I would still get away more cheaply than if I were to take my kids to the store. And, indeed, until they no longer find it fun to spread their arms out wide and walk through two racks crammed with clothes to bring everything to the floor with them, sorry, my sheifelach, but at home you get to stay. Echoing my sentiments, Mindy says, “No, I don’t shop with my kids because I was nearly kicked out of a store when I did. Can you blame the store owner? I’m a mother of three little boys.” Apparently, though, not everyone has such exceptional children. Leah would’ve loved to shop without her children, but the impossible return policies where she lives make that, well, impossible. “I like them around when I shop,” says Leah, “so I
The opinion “If the kids are dressed and the clothing fits, why bother with the whole military headache?” is quite common. can make sure everything fits well before buying.” But she sometimes goes first to scout out the stores on her own. “I shop all by myself,” shares Libby, “or with my sister who shares my taste in clothing. Going with someone whose taste is not a reflection of my own is sometimes as bad as taking along a screaming toddler.” Sarah, whose children are made of different dough, enjoys taking her entourage of six on shopping expeditions. “My kids are pretty well-behaved in the stores, so if they’re home from school at a convenient shopping time, I gladly take them along.” Still, I am not alone in my quest to keep kids home. In my informal poll, the majority said that they keep kids home, but take them along occasionally as a treat or to avoid the schlep of a return.
Matching the Masses — or Not! Organization is the new rage. And if our closets are stocked with uniformly sized bins, to many, it’s a given that their kids, too, should be a reflection of said organization. But for some with a row of girls or boys, it would be a colossal waste of money to buy a completely new wardrobe for each child each season. “My compromise is one matching Shabbos set and one to two matching weekday outfits per season,” reasons Sarah confidently. “What I often do is pass down a set and then get a new coordinating outfit for my oldest child. This way, I get even more matching sets for the price of one outfit.” Many, however, deem matching the kids a superficial activity. The opinion “If the kids are dressed and the clothing fits, why bother with the whole military headache?” is quite common. But Chava feels differently. “I have always stood firm that my main reason for dressing my kids in matching clothes is personal pleasure,” she says. “And the proof is my kids’ matching sets of pjs and robes intended just for the home. COVID-19 proved this more than ever, and actually vindicated my ‘indulgence.’ Although we didn’t venture outdoors, my kids were dressed in matching
152 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 26, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
clothing every single day. It was therapeutic and my personal good-feeling treat.” With three boys and one little princess, as much as Miriam loves cute clothes, she doesn’t obsess over them. “My kids always match, but some things they wear for a second season, and I’m perfectly okay with that. The fact that they match has nothing to do with pressure; it’s just so much easier to keep track of what they have. I will admit that it’s cuter, too.”
Stretching the Dollar Being proactive by shopping at end-of-season sales whenever possible is a great way to save money. Personally, I was never too successful on such shopping expeditions because it usually involves buying things unnecessarily, or finding the clothes a bit too big or a bit too small when the kids actually get to wear them. Is it the reverberations of the “bilig iz teier — cheap winds up being costly” that I was raised on? Perhaps. But what doesn’t work for me works very well for others. A savvy shopper, Libby takes advantage of end-ofseason sales at expensive stores when they go at four for one. She also enjoys buying cheap and accessorizing with trendy items like shells, socks, headbands and jewelry.

“So, yeah, the accessorizing costs triple as much as the actual garment. But the 75% markdowns on the receipts still provide immense pleasure,” she says. Obviously, expenses only grow along with the size of the family. Leah, a mother of thirteen, works systematically. “Do we officially buy something new for every child every season? No. But unofficially, it does work out that growing children will need something new every season. And even when I can pass clothes down and the kids have plenty from their older siblings, I value individuality and allow every child to get at least one new thing.” As in every family, Leah admits that there are stark differences between her self-declared fifteen-year-old princess and her never-needs-anything seventeen-year-old daughter, and she uses her intuition regarding how much, how often. Sarah, who is bothered by the thought of women struggling with parnassah spending a fortune on entire new wardrobes each season, shares tips on stretching the dollar. “I’m totally okay with hand-medowns, as long as they’re in good condition and up to date. Also, I’m an amateur seamstress so I do the easy alterations, such as hems and lengthening dresses, myself. Otherwise I
154 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 26, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
give it to a professional seamstress.” Grateful to be the recipient in a hand-me-down shidduch, Chava animatedly talks about the unexpected chain of events. “At one point, my sister put me in touch with a woman who has the same family size and pattern of boys and girls as myself. The setup is amazing! Unbelievably, we haven’t turned back. And surprise, surprise! Since we’ve gotten to know each other, both of our families were blessed with new additions in the same order, as in, we both had a boy next and then a girl. And so the tradition continues!”
Storage Come the end of a season, and parting with the select few clothes that are not threadbare yet is a struggle. How do we know what should be put away for the coming year? It’s no secret that storing certain clothes may provide that momentary thrill (wow! It lasted through an entire season, and maybe more!), but a square meter of storage space can be prime real estate... For starters, if you want to store compactly, invest in vacuum bags. They literally take up half the space! Many people are obsessed with them. (As a frequent flyer, space is always a
commodity. On the lookout for tips on how to maximize luggage space, I mastered DIY vacuum bags: Stuff a garbage bag with anything that will shrink when vacuum packed. Knot the bag, but leave a small opening, just large enough for the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner. Insert the nozzle and suck. Now quickly, before any air enters, tie the bag closed.) Second, look for storage containers that suit your style, budget and space arrangements. Although plastic containers are the most popular storage options, some stay far from plastic when it comes to storing clothing. Like wine that improves with age, the unsightly yellow stains on clothing also intensify over time, and many blame the plastic containers. The stains may be invisible when you pack up your clothing, and the next year, poof! They’re prominently there. That’s why Leah stores clothes only in cardboard boxes. “If a stain wasn’t washed properly and the piece of clothing is stored in plastic, the stain becomes yellow from the chemicals of the plastic breathing onto it during storage time. And everyone knows those stains are virtually impossible to remove.” Bruchy, who I am quite confident will opt to learn professional home organizing once her little ones get a bit older, offers a plethora of ideas — and is another cardboard box fan! “I organize the stuff according to size and season and clearly label each cardboard box I store them in.” For girls’ stuff, Bruchy uses pink labels, and for boys’ stuff she uses blue. For non–gender specific items, she uses a neutral-colored label. Socks usually last through several seasons, can often be used for boys and girls interchangeably, are quite costly to replace, and take up minimal space. These are something worth putting away. Socks of a very specific color that were matched to an outfit should be stored together with the outfit. This way, if you end up passing it on, the recipient gets a complete gift, down to the last detail.
Generic-colored socks that can be used for many outfits? Store these in a labeled container or bag, and once your kids’ clothes are sorted at the start of a season, empty the bag to see which socks you can make use of. “Same goes for sets,” Chava adds. “If it’s something that you will use only together with its counterpart, store the set together. And it’s also wise to store girls’ hair accessories and shells that are very specific along with the outfit as well.” Most importantly, be real with yourself. If it’s an outfit you’ll probably never use again, you’ll be happier knowing someone else is making use of it. If a dress appears a bit faded now, it will only fade more and look way more worn when you pull it out of the box in a year’s time! “If an outfit was simply not mutzlach, and we ended up using it only once or twice that season,” shares Bruchy, “I do not save it. Whether it was because it was easier to use the comfortable, simple stuff for my kids, or for a different reason, it’s simply not worth wasting space on high-maintenance clothing.” If you don’t have a child close in age who will use the item of clothing, chances are that when it’ll fit your next son five years later, you will no longer want to use it. “Give away, give away, give away,” stresses Libby. “I get the most pleasure from giving away clothing when I’m done with them, especially at the beginning of the season — like wintry stuff at the beginning of the winter — and watching my cousins’ and friends’ kids enjoy them.” Yael Weisner, a popular professional organizer who’s been arraying the disarrayed for many years, brings a story on the topic of wasting storage space. “There was a woman who stored her down blankets in a storage room for years. ‘Why not save them for my married kids?’ she reasoned. When her kids eventually got married and asked for the blankets, their mother said, ‘Oh, where will I find them now? Take some money, and go buy new ones.’ And then there are those who pay for storage space,” Yael adds. “Let’s not even go there!” One woman lamented, “All that wasted space. Whatever I sent down to my basement stayed there! What a pity I didn’t get rid of my stuff when others would’ve still enjoyed it.” The bottom line? Use it, save it or pass it on — but whatever you choose, make sure it works for you!

RAIL EXPLORERS
This summer was the first time that rail bikes were available this close to home. THE PCS GRADUATES PLACEMENT ADVANTAGE PCS/ Agudath Israel has made over 6,000 job placements. Employers have trusted PCS for their hiring needs. In particular, many employers are interested in hiring the well-trained PCS graduates from their Accounting and Software/ Web and App Development course. With six placement directors, the Vast Agudath Israel Network, and decades of relationship with firms, PCS course graduates have attained a very high placement rate. PCS spoke to course graduates about their experience: PCS gave me the proper training in the most relevant skills. They provided crucial interview preparation classes which made a huge difference. PCS had a personal connection with my employer, and they helped them determine that I was right for the job. -Baruch Greenberg, Software and Web Development graduate PCS helped me get an internship through their connections which was very helpful in building my resume. PCS helped me with my resume and interview process. They taught us about the recruiting process and encouraged us to network and accept internship positions. Of my classmates, all were successful in finding employment. -M.S., Masters in Accounting graduate PCS found me a part-time job while I was taking the Software course. I made connections with a former PCS student who introduced me to the head of the programming dept. From there I was asked if I would like an internship, which turned into a job. S.S. Software and Web Development graduate PCS’s contacts helped me find a job. Having a team behind me in my job search made it much less daunting. -R.L. Software and Web Development graduate

Transport of Rockland (TOR) bus service connects residents within Rockland County. As they say, “We keep Rockland rolling!” Catch That Bus! A Fair Ride
TOR is a fixed-route, flag-down bus system, which serves designated stops as shown on the schedule. The bus will also drop off or pick up at any safe spot along the route.
Standard cash fare: $2 Cash transfer: $1
The TOR #59 route, which traverses Route 59 from Nyack to Suffern, is the most heavily traveled of TOR’s 10 routes and accounts for nearly half the system’s ridership!
SuperSaver: Strip of ten tickets for $11. These can be purchased at the Town Hall, the Community Outreach Center, and Rockland Kosher Supermarket, among other locations.
Peak travel time on weekdays is between 6 and 9 in the morning and from 4 to 7 in the evening.
Children under 40 inches ride free! That’s the average height of a four-year-old.
COVID-19 Changes
Showing proof of age or a Medicare card enables senior citizens and individuals covered by Medicare to get reduced fares. Alternately, a Reduced Fare Photo ID Card can be obtained from the Rockland County Department of Public Transportation. Prepare exact fare only. Don’t expect cash change if you overpay; vouchers in the form of an electronic change card are issued for use on a future trip.
168 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 26, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
All buses park at the bus garage in Hillburn, NY.
RIDE FOR FREE! To limit close-contact interaction between driver and riders, fare collection is currently waived. COVER UP. All passengers aged two and up who are medically able to tolerate it must wear a face covering or mask that covers the mouth and nose as long as they are on a TOR bus. The drivers, too, must cover up whenever riders are on board. KEEP YOUR DISTANCE. TOR encourages social distancing onboard and at bus stops. WHEN BACK IS FRONT! Board the bus from the back whenever possible (some smaller buses don’t have rear doors). SUPER-CLEAN SURFACES. Every time a bus arrives at the garage, all high-touch surfaces such as doors, handrails, stop request cables or buttons, seats and window seals are sanitized. And this often happens more than once a day!
By: T. Gestetner
New Routes Point of Contact
Is there a route change or new route you would love to see? TOR doesn’t have funding to expand operations at this time, but they are always interested in input from customers and residents. It’s as easy as 1-2-3… 1. SPEAK UP! Reach out to the Rockland County Public Transportation Department, which oversees the TOR service. Share your ideas with them. 2. UP FOR CONSIDERATION: The suggested change will be considered, especially if it can be made at little or no additional cost. 3. CHANGE! If there is enough interest and demand, the improvements could potentially be implemented. Case in point! When community members appealed to the Public Transportation Department regarding Loop #2, the input was used to begin a routing analysis that provided justification to upgrade the route. The route was changed to bi-directional, and a stop within the Evergreen shopping center was added.
Waiting and waiting and waiting? You can call the Rockland Transit Information Center if your bus is delayed, and they can connect you with dispatch at the bus garage. Buses are sometimes behind schedule because of congestion on busier roads in our parts. Suggested wait before calling in for updates: ten to fifteen minutes beyond scheduled arrival time. The staff at the Transit Information Center can also provide information regarding other regional transit services. They even offer trip-planning assistance! The Public Transportation Department is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. P: (845) 364-3333 E: transithelp@co.rockland.ny.us www.rocklandbus.com
T.R.I.P.S. Paratransit Another division of Rockland’s bus service, TRIPS, stands for Transportation Resources Intra-county for Physically disabled and Senior citizens. The service provides curb-to-curb pick-ups by appointment for those who cannot use the standard bus routes. The trip may be made directly to your destination, or stops for other passengers may be scheduled along the way.
Facts and Figures
10 – Number of routes 43 – Buses in current fleet TOR #59 – Busiest route, most riders, most frequent service
