3 Tablespoons oil

2 Tomatoes diced

Cup fresh diced onions

3 Cups Chef Tzali Frozen Diced Mixed Peppers

Zucchini diced (optional)

1 Teaspoon salt ½ Teaspoon paprika

Heat oil in large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook until translucent, 7-10 minutes, Stirring occasionally. Add remaining vegetables, sprinkle with salt and paprika and stir to mix well. Cover, reduce heat and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 45 minutes. Serve over cooked rice.

Bag Chef Tzali Frozen Mixed Peppers 4 Cloves garlic crushed ¼ Cup olive or vegetable oil 1 ½ Tablespoons soy sauce

Tablespoon chicken soup base

½ Teaspoon salt ½ Teaspoon pepper

Pre-heat oven to 475°F. In a small bowl combine oil, garlic, soy sauce, soup base, salt and pepper. Mix in Chef Tzali Mixed Peppers mix and spread out on a lined baking sheet. Roast for 10 minutes. Stir vegetables and continue roasting until lightly charred. About 7-10 minutes.

(Re: To Happy Hair Days, Issue 256) This letter is in reply to the woman who is struggling with her daughter’s frizzy hair and has a hard time brushing it in the morning. I had the same struggle. Mousse did not help me; it only made my hair more sticky and puffy. When I reached high school, I learned a technique that helped me a lot. I would take a spray bottle and fill it with conditioner and a little bit of water. Every morning, I sprayed up my hair with the mixture until it was fully wet, and then I would easily comb through it. After doing so, my hair would stay sleek and calm the entire day! (And if I was in a rush to go to school and skipped this process, my mother would tell me that my classmates would get lost in my forest of a ponytail...) I am also a lucky mother of an adorable curlyhead, writing in reference to the letter written by a mother who wanted to hear more about handling curly hair. I once went to a hair stylist who styled my daughter’s hair for a simcha, and she offered me a liquid mousse from the company Fantasia. It is mess-free and inexpensive. (I’m not sure if it’s available locally, but you can ask a professional hairdresser about it.) Since then, I spray it on my daughter’s wet hair every morning; the routine definitely takes time, but it’s also less painful and gives her hair an adorable fresh look. Hatzlacha! M.F.

FAITH IN ME (Re: The Morning Melody, Issue 255) I’d like to share yet another beautiful insight on the words “rabbah emunasecha.” Going with the previously mentioned explanations, it could have said “rabbah emunasi — how great is my faith in You.” So why does it say “how great is Your faith”? Whom does Hashem have faith in? The answer is that Hashem has faith in us. No matter what you’re going through in life, Hashem is telling you, first thing in the morning, that He has faith in you. He’s “rooting” for you; He knows you can do it and is giving you the strength to get through it. When I learned this, my mornings took on a new meaning. I might not (think I) have the confidence or the energy, but I know Someone Up There believes in me! And that, more than anything, is what can turn your life around for the better. A LIFE-CHANGING PROGRAM (Re: A Goal in Mind, Issue 255) Arrowsmith is a program that shifts one’s life forever. I feel privileged to share our family’s experience firsthand. Life before Arrowsmith is hard to express, but I can try to give you just a tiny glimpse. It was very frustrating to see my daughter in an unending cycle of failure. This created anger, low self-esteem, and low confidence. There were many temper tantrums, as well. When my daughter started with the Arrowsmith program, she immediately loved going every day to do cognitive exercises. Slowly but surely we saw the changes. Now she is a comprehending, confident, secure and calm fifteen-year-old who feels ready to climb higher than ever was possible before. My gratitude cannot ever be verbalized. BAKING LIKE THE BUBBIES (Re: The Secrets of the Kokosh Saga, Issue 246) I wrote this letter in May and didn’t get around to sending it until now, but I think the point is still relevant. I very much enjoyed reading the article about the kokosh cake saga, written with such a good sense of humor. I especially liked the instructions for neatness and saving time; this is the right way to teach young women how to be organized. As a former Home Economics teacher, I especially appreciated it. The original Hungarian name for the cake is “kakaosh,” pronounced the way it’s written. The original version calls for a dough that’s basic but delicious, made with milk and butter. The filling is not so rich — a light cocoa spread. I am very amazed that in the filling you use more than 3 cups of sugar. This seems excessive to me (considering that the dough has only 4½ cups of flour). In America we all consume too much sugar. It would be much better for parents to discourage children from

consuming such sugary treats, and encourage them to eat more fresh, healthy fruit. I try my best to persuade my grandchildren to do so, and slowly they are adapting to it. When I cut up fresh fruit and place it on the table, it always disappears! I also love to bake, and my specialty is a “kokosh.” The ingredients for the dough are very similar to yours, but the preparation is different. I fill it with crunchy walnuts and chocolate spread. My grandchildren claim that it is the best kokosh, even if it’s not so overly sweet (maybe just because they didn’t taste your cake!). Nobody wants to gain weight, but everyone enjoys a piece of delicious cake once in a while. The Shavuos cheesecake photo spread was very impressive, but after reading the recipes, I was disappointed. Why does every cheesecake recipe call for cream cheese? Why not farmer cheese, which has half the calories and is much healthier? I think it’s even tastier; products with real cheese don’t make you feel like you’re eating butter. The original Hungarian or the fine Italian cakes were not made with cream cheese, and they were delicious. I don’t even know if there was cream cheese in Europe back then. I think that everyone would appreciate a trend that shows how to bake well in a healthier way. I would love to hear your thoughts. With my best regards, R.F.

I’d like to use this forum to discuss late chasunos and the impact they have on guests. Baruch Hashem, we are up to a point where we can celebrate simchos without hurrying to finish up within the guidelines. However, the time wasted causes inconvenience and even angst for family and friends participating in the simcha. Mothers of young children spend time and money finding babysitters. Men don’t have the energy to awake on time the next morning for their avodas hakodesh, be it davening, learning or work. Bachurim wake up late — or simply don’t have the presence of mind to learn. Kids attend school late and miss important learning time. Teachers, melamdim and maggidei shiur all suffer when kids are late and miss davening and learning. Bubbies and zeidies, and elter-bubbies and elter-zeidies, stay up until late hours with mesiras nefesh, not wanting to miss a minute of the simcha, but is it fair? Mechutanim, too, are affected, with the extra fees these extra late hours incur. Even the chasan and kallah don’t have the energy to dance for three hours in a row. Perhaps the time for change has come. It was only recently that we learned how beautiful weddings can be, even when there’s only two hours of celebration. Why does a chasunah have to be seven to ten hours long? May Hashem give us the zechiyah to celebrate simchos with joyous hearts, in a way that makes it enjoyable and easy for all participants. G.S. In this perek, Reb Yochanan ben Zakai’s talmidim each list three fundamentals of Yiddishkeit. Reb Eliezer ben Horkenus, Reb Yehoshua ben Chananya and Reb Yosi Hakohen all mention different areas of ahavas Yisroel. Reb Eliezer says to respect others as you would respect yourself, Reb Yehoshua says that sinas chinam destroys a person, and Reb Yosi says to love your friend’s money as if it were your own. There couldn’t be a more fitting time to discuss this theme than now, during the Three Weeks. The Gemara says that during the era of the Second Beis Hamikdash there was Torah, there was tzedakah, and the Yidden were doing mitzvos. But at the same time, there was sinas chinam, as we see with the story of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza, to which the Gemara attributes the Churban. What happened? Due to a mix-up, Bar Kamtza, who was a staunch enemy of the baal simcha, arrived at a party instead of Kamtza, the host’s friend. The host physically picked up Bar Kamtza and threw him out of the hall, despite Bar Kamtza’s pleas that he’d pay for the entire feast to be spared the shame. And none of the chachamim or guests present stuck up for Bar Kamtza. Heartless, you might think. Until you continue to the second part of the story. In his fury at the host, Bar Kamtza went to the king and made a libel against the Yidden, saying that they were planning an uprising. To test them, the king sent a korban with Bar Kamtza to see if the Yidden would sacrifice it in the Beis Hamikdash. Intent on his evil mission, Bar Kamtza made a blemish on the animal, and the Yidden couldn’t use it. Now the king believed Bar Kamtza’s tale, and he destroyed the Beis Hamikdash and murdered millions of Yidden. Bar Kamtza was ready to have the entire Klal Yisroel destroyed because his

kavod was hurt. This shows that he was a rasha even before the incident and was probably well-deserving of being removed from the simcha. And now we can understand why none of the chachamim batted an eyelash at his shameful “eviction”; Bar Kamtza was obviously a notorious person. Nevertheless, even with his obvious reputation, the Gemara notes that because Bar Kamtza endured such busha, Hashem gave him the power to succeed with his evil plan that ended with the killing of so many Yidden. Such is the severity of shaming another Yid. In the days of the Noda b’Yehuda, there was a Yid by the name of Rav Dovid Becher who was the Rav of Turkey. The saintly Noda b’Yehuda wrote that before attempting to write teshuvos to Rav Becher, his hands would shake and his teeth would chatter in trepidation. He added that he had this awe before writing to only Rav Becher and one other gadol. This demonstrates how great Rav Becher was. Rav Becher was once making chasunah in another town and hired a wagon driver to take his family there. The drive took exceptionally long, and Rav Dovid was becoming stressed about keeping the large crowds waiting. He urged the driver to pick up speed, but it didn’t help. At some point, in a moment of nerves, Rav Becher muttered, “The driver’s such a shlemazel; can’t he go any quicker?” Hours later, after the chuppah, Rav Dovid suddenly remembered how he had embarrassed the wagon driver. He asked around for him, but he was gone. Devastated and determined to ask him for mechilah, he left his child’s chasunah, took two fast horses, two talmidim, and off they galloped in search of the wagon driver. After about two hours, they caught up with him on his way back. Rav Dovid got off his horse and begged the wagon driver for mechilah. The wagon driver refused, saying he had deeply hurt him. No money or gifts could placate the wagon driver. He said that only in exchange for half of Rav Dovid’s Olam Haba would he forgive him. Without a moment’s hesitation, Rav Dovid called his two talmidim to be witness that he was selling the wagon driver half of his Olam Haba for mechilah. This is the extent we have to go if we have hurt someone, because this is how grave it is to do so in the first place. As Reb Eliezer says, “Yehi chevod chavercha chaviv alecha” — we have to respect others even if they may not be the most respectable person. Every Yid has a portion in Olam Haba; clearly they are each worthy of respect, irrelevant of the impression they make. Peel away the outer layers, look beyond their appearance, status and background, and see only the honorable spark inside them. Whenever the Ahavas Yisroel of Vizhnitz went to visit a town and a huge entourage came out to greet him, he would look out for anyone in the crowd who looked like — for lack of a nicer term — a schnorrer, and he would march right over to these people and hug them. Apparently, his bekitche actually got dirty from embracing these homeless people. Afterward, what usually happened was that the other townsfolk would then also pay attention to these once-invisible simpletons and give them the due kavod every Yid deserves.

Project by Hatzalah Statewide Offers Emergency Coverage to Out-of-State Camps A relatively new Hatzalah initiative has mobilized this summer to provide coverage to the many summer camps that have relocated outside of New York State, where overnight camping has been banned because of the coronavirus outbreak. Hatzalah Statewide was created five years ago to offer emergency medical assistance to those traveling outside areas normally covered by Hatzalah, reported Hamodia. “We realized that if people are traveling out of our basic network area, then there are likely other Hatzalah members outside of the area as well,” explained Hatzalah Statewide coordinator Simcha Shain, who also serves as the Paramedic/ALS coordinator for Lakewood Hatzolah. Hatzalah Statewide, with a network of 275 members who are always on call, uses an advanced communication system that is operational worldwide. With camps moving this summer to locations such as Pennsylvania, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine where coronavirus protocols are less restrictive, Hatzalah Statewide reached out to camp directors to offer the services of members who are stationed in nearby areas. While Hatzalah Statewide does not offer transport services, it does provide emergency first aid, which can be crucial since it can take as long as 30 to 45 minutes for local first responders to arrive on scene. Additionally, a team of five Hatzalah Statewide members

are always on call to locate the nearest hospital for those in need of specialized care, ensuring that patients are taken to the medical facility that can best accommodate their specific needs. Security Funding Approved in Rockland After Chanukah Machete Attack Seven months after Monsey was devastated by a deadly Chanukah terror attack in the home of Rabbi Chaim Leibish Rottenberg, over $2.5 million in security funding will be making its way to over a dozen Jewish institutions in Rockland County. What’s Next for St. Zita’s Villa? Major changes may be afoot at a sprawling Monsey property after the death of the director of St. Zita’s Villa adult care facility located at the intersection of Saddle River Road and Grove Street. The fourteen-acre parcel of land has been owned since 1903 by a Catholic group. The New York Times reported that it was in 1938 that St. Zita’s became home to an order of nuns who’d dedicated themselves to helping homeless women in Manhattan for nearly 40 years. Over time, St. Zita’s was turned into an assisted living facility for senior women, expanding its buildings in 1968 and then again in 1990. While the New York State Department of Health website officially lists St. Zita’s Villa as a 35-bed facility, The Journal News reported that it is currently home to thirteen women, all of whom will need to be relocated. Acting administrator Prena Grishaj said that the women of St. Zita’s have become like family over the years. “It’s many days that we cry here,” said Grishaj, adding, “It was a beautiful place and it's sad to see it go.” The property is zoned R15-A, which permits residential development on 15,000-square-foot lots with accessory apartments, and includes a 30,000-square-foot building. It was listed for sale for $10 million on July 10, but when contacted by The Journal News, St. Zita’s administrator said that the building was not for sale. The listing was then changed to temporarily off the market.

When Blumi Hartstein then calls with questions about Korman, Rosenblit decides to check into the whole Korman situation a bit more. Magdiel, Eretz Yisroel, 1949 The curtain with the embroidered flowers fluttered in the light morning breeze. Gershon Ludmir was smearing a bit of Batya’s apple jam on a slice of black bread when there was a knock at the door. Batya entered, pulling almost-three-year-old Elisha behind her. “He was crying again,” she said. “The teacher said I should take him home.” She sat the child onto her lap with a scowl on her face and sighed. “What can I do? Berta Greenberg will not be very pleased if I bring him to the sewing shop for the fifth day in a row!” “I wanna go with Tatty to the tractor,” the boy declared enthusiastically. His father chuckled and offered his son some jam on a spoon. “No, sweetie. We can’t do that. Tractors are dangerous for little boys.” “Too bad summer vacation is over. When Miriam was home, there was no problem.” Batya stood up, went over to the pot of soup she’d left, and opened the lid. “If he doesn’t get used to nursery quickly, I won’t be able to go to work.” “Maybe that will be a good solution,” Gershon said. “I’m not sure your salary is worth

I mean, how much material can we afford to buy?” He was quiet for a minute before saying heavily, “We can take, for now… maybe as a loan, a little bit of Ernie’s money. Even if we take only a quarter of what he sent…” She gaped at him. Not because he’d mentioned Ernie; the name came up a lot at home. But because of the very idea. “Your brother’s money?” she repeated, grasping Elisha’s hand as he climbed onto the table, threatening to tip the whole Primus with the soup pot onto himself. “I don’t know what to tell you,” Gershon said. “Four years have passed since the war

I know his wife’s family’s name from Bratislava, but I didn’t know any of them personally, and I have no idea what happened to them or where they are today.” “In any case, he sent the money to you, not to any other brother-inlaw who may have survived.” “I’ve recently begun to think,” he said, ignoring her final statement, “that maybe I can use a little of it. As a loan.” Then he hurriedly added, “But Shlomo will be furious if he hears that I took it for myself. He’s the oldest. And if we start with inheritances…” “Shlomo lives in Haifa; you haven’t spoken, written or met with him in the last two years.” “But you can be sure that if I use the money, we’ll meet all right,” Gershon said bitterly. “In any case, the money really isn’t mine. I’m thinking of it purely in terms of a loan.” “When did you last check the lists of relatives?” “In the last year, I’ve checked six times.” Gershon stood up to take a siddur so he could bentch. “The lists are not growing at the same pace they did those first years. Apparently…” He closed his eyes for a moment. “I guess I’ve just lost hope.” Batya nodded. She remembered those days when Gershon worked constantly to get any piece of information about the survivors from Europe. “I’ll check again, today or tomorrow,” he said after he finished bentching. “Elisha, do you want me to take you to nursery? I’m late anyway,” he noted to his wife. The boy jumped excitedly into his father’s arms. “He’s going to cry,” Batya

warned. “Let the teacher figure it out.” Gershon picked up his son with one hand. “Why are we sending such a little boy to school instead of leaving him home with you? So you can go to work. The teacher knows that.” “Right. Let me just turn off the fire, and I’ll leave with you.” Gershon walked along the dirt path toward the nursery school. He didn’t want to get swept back to those painful years right after the war, to the fog of the war itself, and certainly not to the years before that, to that day when he stood in the doorway of his childhood home, and his father, despite not being a Kohen, blessed him with the words of Birchas Kohanim.

Ernie was working at Fraser, the famous watch factory in Bratislava, and was quite successful. But Shlomo struggled to find his place, and after a month of living in his brother’s home in Magdiel, he’d moved to Haifa. They’d hardly been in touch since. And then ties with Europe had been totally cut off. Only a short time after the Germans had captured the Sudetenland, and Bratislava fell into their hands, Gershon had received a package with a wad of American dollars. A note was affixed to it with Ernie’s name. Two months later, a letter arrived; Gershon wasn’t sure to this day how exactly it had made it through. Ernie had briefly written some news about his family: He was living on the same street as their parents, he had a baby named for their grandmother, and because the future was very unclear, he had decided to send a sizable amount of his money to safer shores. That was the last letter. It wasn’t dated, and there was no way to know when it had been written. What had happened to Ernie since? His wife? Their daughter? Perhaps they’d had another baby? There were people who were able to relate to Gershon what had happened to his parents. They’d been taken in a big deportation on Erev Sukkos. But no one could tell him what had happened to Ernie and his young family.

Then he had left, and his parents’ and little brother’s images remained frozen in his memory as they were on that day. They had tried to write regularly, and Ernie would always add a message to each letter his parents sent. Gershon would make sure to answer him warmly; he’d always gotten along with Ernie, not like with Shlomo. Five years later, he’d sent his parents his wedding invitation, and received a warm letter with brachos and good wishes in response. Then he’d sent them a detailed letter and one wedding

The boy slipped out of his father’s arms silently and ran inside. * * * * * The council office in Magdiel was almost empty when Gershon walked in. Only Baruch, the longtime secretary, was sitting there. “Oh, are you looking for your letter from the Bureau of Missing Relatives?” “Yes,” Gershon replied. A few months earlier, Baruch had told him that his hopes and dreams were a waste of time; inevitably, they would all come crashing down. “I also searched,” he had said. “But I was there, unlike you. And I know what went on there. Maybe that’s why I’m much less optimistic than you.” Now Baruch gave him a smile. “It arrived this morning,” he said. “How did it get here so fast? I asked you to send the question just a week ago.” “That’s what the telephone is for, my friend!” Baruch chuckled and patted the gray device. “I spoke to Menachem Rosko on the phone and asked him to send me information about all the Ludmirs currently on their list.” “And the fact that you didn’t immediately let me know what he answered means that not a single new Ludmir turned up?” Right after the war, three survivors named Ludmir had appeared on the lists. But aside for a single third cousin from Poland, there were no familial ties. “No, it means that I asked him to send it to me in writing.” Baruch slid his chair back and looked into the metal box next to his desk. “You know I prefer not to be involved in these things.” He pulled out a brown envelope. “Here, take a look yourself.” Gershon reached for the envelope. “Sit here, in my chair.” Baruch

rose. “I’m going out for a smoking break. If someone looks for me, tell them I’ll be back in twenty minutes.” Gershon sat down, gently moving aside the objects on the desk. He opened the envelope. Outside, Baruch walked up and down in front of the little structure, his cigarette clamped firmly between his lips. There weren’t lots of people in Magdiel like Gershon, who still hoped. Because how many new survivors suddenly cropped up? There were some, sure. Children who were discovered. People who, for some reason, did not give in their names initially, or others who’d only just gotten to Eretz Yisroel. Then there were names that somehow came through from the

Which Yosef could it be?” “A little brother you don’t know about who was born after you left to Eretz Yisroel?” “No, no.” “A cousin?” “On the Ludmir side there were mostly girls. And none of my few boy cousins was named Yosef.” “A nephew?” Gershon gazed at the darkening sky. “I had only one married brother there; he lived on that street, and he had one daughter. Maybe it’s her? Maybe it’s a mistake, and it’s really a girl?” “Yes, it could be,” Baruch agreed. He still did not take his hand off of Gershon’s shoulder. “What are you going to do with this information now?” “I’ll be going to Yerushalayim tomorrow morning.” “You’ve got quite a journey. Where in Yerushalayim?” “The Diskin Orphanage.” “So it’s a boy? And that’s where he is? Or she is?” Gershon shook his head; it was not clear if it was a nod or a shake in the negative. “It says I can get details there.” “What can I tell you?” Baruch looked into his eyes. “Good luck. I hope you hear good news. But don’t hope too much. It’s not good for your heart, your stomach, your gallbladder, and a few other things.”

He’s from Bratislava, and he lived on our street. Ours!” “And is the first name familiar?” “No, we didn’t have a Yosef in the family.”

The Pulse: This past week I sat down with Representatives Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) and Max Rose (D-NY) to discuss their work with the Problem Solvers Caucus. Rep. Gottheimer represents New Jerseyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 5th District, which includes parts of Teaneck and Upper Saddle River. He recently fended off a primary challenge from Arati Kreibich, who received backing from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders. His victory was convincing as he defeated Kreibich by a landslide margin of 73% to 27%. Max Rose represents New Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 11th District, which includes parts of Brooklyn and Staten Island. Rose was first elected in 2018. He is a new, young and upcoming Democratic voice. Both Gottheimer and Rose are members of the Problem Solvers Caucus, which is a bipartisan group of congressional representatives who are committed to working across the aisle to solve problems facing the nation.

AL: What was the impetus for your involvement in founding the Problem Solvers Caucus? JG: When I ran for Congress in 2016, I was very frustrated by the inaction and fighting [taking place in Washington]. People seemed to go to Washington to say nasty things and yell at each other. I spent much of my career in the private sector, and I wondered why they couldn’t do what we had to do at work. You can’t get everything you want, but you can work together to move the country forward. One of the challenges in Washington is that people don’t speak to each other. If we don’t listen to each other and build relationships with each other, we can never agree on any issue. That is why I joined together with Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY) to recreate this group of 25 Republicans and 25 Democrats. We come together every week with one objective: to get things done. AL: What do you consider the most significant achievement of the Prob-

lem Solvers Caucus to date? JG: We have had many achievements, but the most important one is

a rule change, which allows us to bring the legislation that we have agreed upon to the floor for a vote. We got together to change the rules in the House, and we did it. Now any legislation that has the backing of 290 members of the House is guaranteed a vote. Through this change, we repealed a tax on surviving spouses of fallen active-duty members, we enacted environmental legislation, and we repealed a tax on 9/11 victim compensation. All of these accomplishments came about because of the rule change. We also played a significant role in getting criminal justice reform passed, in getting the government reopened after it was shut down, and in getting coronavirus assistance approved. We were also involved in ensuring that there would be no conditions attached on aid [to Israel] and in providing support for Holocaust education. AL: Recently, some mainstream Democrats have gone down to defeat

to progressive candidates. Does that mean that being a centrist who can work in a bipartisan fashion is losing its appeal among Democratic primary voters and activists? JG: Most of the country is somewhere in the middle and wants us to

get things done. They are sick and tired of us seeing people raise voices at each other. The primary system favors more extreme candidates on both sides. Nevertheless, I just got through a primary where I had someone endorsed by Bernie Sanders challenge me. My challenger also had the squad members come in to support her, but we won overwhelmingly. The message that I took away is that most voters want to elect people who can get things done, but that does not mean that they won’t continue to try to target people in Congress who work to get things done. We recently saw a pro-Israel congressman in New York go down to defeat. Still, the key is to keep on doing what we do to get things done, and I am convinced that that is what the country and our voters want us to do. MR: We’ve got to get rid of the dichotomy of the left, right and middle. What I care about is having a sense of fierce urgency to fix this country’s problems. It is amazing how unified the American people are and how unified elected officials are about recognizing the issues that we have. We have problems with crumbling infrastructure, lack of access to opportunity, income disparity — whether they are racial or socioeconomic. Look, Josh has got all the brains. One thing I do know is that Republicans and Democrats must work together if we want to solve these prob-

lems now. You never sacrifice your values, you never give up a fight, and you don’t need to compromise on everything, but you have to be able to get things done for the American people. Otherwise, what are we here for? AL: The media and the 24-hour news cycle often seem to focus on soundbites and those who refuse to compromise. The work of those who work hard to get things done is not always recognized. JG: Getting things done is not nearly as exciting as opposing parties rais-

ing voices at one another, but that’s what the public wants. Max sells his brain short, but the two of us together make up a full person. AL: There was recently some criticism of Senator Tammy Duckworth (DIL) for failing to respond forcefully to a question posed to her regarding removing a statue of George Washington. Some took this to mean that centrist Democrats are becoming more beholden to the progressive elements in the party.

WHAT IS YOUR TEEN DOING THIS SUMMER?

MR: I speak for myself. I am not afraid of anyone — left, right or center. No one tells me what to believe. I follow my values. We cannot completely eliminate our nation’s history. We should not be tearing down every statue. That being said, we should not be honoring Confederate generals and naming streets after them; they are traitors. We also need to be aware that our history comes with significant flaws, blemishes and a legacy of injustice. All this talk about statues does nothing to address some of the incredible inequities [that exist today]. We can’t allow elected officials to just talk about [statues] without really addressing the issues and working to fix them. AL: Are you concerned that bipartisan support for Israel is not as robust as it was in the past? Do you believe that there is cause for concern?

MR: I believe that bipartisan support for Israel is ironclad. It doesn’t mean that there aren’t fringes in the party, but they are fringes. We recently voted to affirm the importance of the Obama-era MOU [memorandum of understanding] and that it must remain intact. There must be no new conditions placed on aid to Israel. That would put America’s national security at risk. Again, there are fringes in the party — and by the way, there are fringes in the Republican Party as well; they may not appreciate the value of our relationship with Israel, but they are fringes.

Lemon Chiffon Cake Frank’s Bakery was an iconic shop in Monsey in years gone by. One of their specialties was a light chiffon cake with a ribbon of lemon cream running through each slice. As kids, we would relish the jelly part and leave over most of the cake. This is my attempt at recreating that specialty.

Ingredients 12 eggs, separated

1 cup oil

¼ cup seltzer

2¾ cups sugar

3 oz. orange juice

4 cups flour

3 T. vanilla sugar

3 T. fresh lemon juice

1 T. baking powder

Lemon Cream 1 container Baker’s Choice Lemon Creme

¼ cup confectioners’ sugar

¼ cup fresh lemon juice

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Beat the egg whites and add the sugars. Lower the speed and add the yolks. Add the remaining cake ingredients by alternating wet and dry ingredients. 2. Mix Baker’s Choice Lemon Creme with freshly squeezed lemon juice and confectioners’ sugar. Pour the cake batter into a lined 10x16” pan. After putting aside ¼ cup of cream for the topping, marbleize the lemon cream into the cake. 3. Place the lemon cream into a bag, and make a tiny hole at the corner of the bag. Form thin lines of lemon cream at approximately ½-inch intervals on the cake. Using a toothpick, marbleize the lemon cream. Bake for 1 hour.

Marble Ring Cake Classic Bundts are characteristically dense. The delightful thing about this Bundt is its light and airy texture. This recipe uses a 12-cup Bundt pan, sponsored by and available at Auction Mart.

Ingredients 7 eggs, separated

½ cup orange juice

2 tsp. baking powder

2 cups sugar, divided

2 cups flour

2 heaping T. cocoa

7 oz. oil

1 T. vanilla sugar

⅓ cup confectioners’ sugar

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Using an oil cooking spray that includes flour, coat the pan evenly. 2. Beat egg whites on high speed until foamy. Add one cup of sugar, and continue beating until stiff. Lower the speed, and slowly add the yolks. Add the remaining sugar. 3. Combine the oil and juice in a bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, vanilla and baking powder. Alternating wet and dry ingredients, add the contents of the two bowls to the mixer. 4. Pour three-quarters of the batter into the prepared pan. Add cocoa and confectioners’ sugar to the remaining batter. Pour into the pan and marbleize. 5. Bake for 1 hour to 1 hour and 10 minutes. Serving Suggestion: Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar and melted chocolate.

Cappuccino Trio Loaf This trilevel cake, which was originally presented as a Bundt, was passed along to my sister from a neighbor who received it from a third person, and so on. With compliments and apologies to the creator of this cake, I present my version of this winner. This impressive whopper of a loaf cake was baked in a 16-inch Wilton loaf pan, sponsored by and available at Auction Mart. Alternatively, it can be prepared as two loaf cakes using two 10-inch loaf pans.

Ingredients 8 eggs, separated 2¾ cups sugar 1½ T. vanilla sugar 1⅓ cups oil ¾ cup orange juice 2¾ cups flour 2½ tsp. baking powder ⅓ cup instant chocolate pudding 7 oz. cappuccino chips 1½ T. coffee, dissolved in: 1 T. hot water

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Beat the egg whites until fluffy, and then add the sugar and beat until stiff. Lower the speed and add the egg yolks. Add the vanilla sugar, oil, orange juice, flour and baking powder by alternating wet and dry ingredients. 2. Divide the batter into three. Mix the instant pudding into the first part, and pour it into a lined pan. Mix the cappuccino chips into the second part, and gently pour it over the first layer. Add the dissolved coffee to the third part of the batter, and pour it into the pan over the first two layers. 3. Bake for 1 hour. Lower the heat to 325°, and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes. When cool, invert the cake onto a serving platter. Optional: Drizzle with melted chocolate or two contrasting glazes. Tip: To line the pan neatly, cut a 12-inch wide parchment paper 24 inches long. Wet paper. Shake off any excess water, and flex paper into the pan, smoothing it into shape.

TISHA B’AV, WE ARE TOLD, IS A DAY TO CRY. But how exactly are we supposed to cry? What are we supposed to cry for? We know that the crying is for the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash, yet we find ourselves centuries removed from the destruction. Are we capable of emotion for a tragedy so far removed from ourselves? Can we realistically be expected to cry for the loss of something we have never experienced? It would seem worthwhile to provide an overarching approach, a paradigm that will help us understand both the Kinnos in particular as well as the day of Tisha B’Av at large in a tangible manner. 100 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 22, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Rav Shamshon Refoel Hirsch points out that although the day of Tisha B’Av carries with itself multiple restrictions, the essential feature is certainly that of taanis, of fasting. Yet one who is in aveilus, mourning the passing of a close relative, does not fast. There are many restrictions associated with different levels of aveilus, but fasting is not one of them. If Tisha B’Av is a day of mourning, how did fasting become such a central component? Looking through the words of Chazal, it is clear that fasting is not associated with aveilus, but with a sha’as tzarah, a time of potential danger or calamity. When a community stands at a point where they are at great risk, the gravity of the situation demands a call for teshuvah, for reassessment of actions, and to seek out ways for improvement. It is within this framework that we find the concept of fasting. Clearly, then, when Chazal went ahead and gave us a series of fast days, among them Tisha B’Av, though they certainly emphasized the element of aveilus, they did not intend for the day to start and end with that alone. They intended it as a day to analyze where we stand, to realize where in life we may have gone wrong, and to focus on what we can correct. It is a day of introspection, very much in the present, far more than just a day of mourning a historic loss. This, however, brings us to a most glaring question. How does the loss of the Beis Hamikdash so many years ago relate to our self-analysis today? How does the Beis Hamikdash, or

lack thereof, figure into judging our current state? By way of analogy: Suppose you’re driving from Montreal to New York, passing through the Adirondacks in one of the less inhabited areas, when you suddenly realize that there is someone you need to contact urgently. There is a problem, however. Although you have a cell phone with you, the nearest cell phone tower was recently razed to the ground in a violent act of vandalism by some hooligans. Now, as you take out your phone, you’re left with but the weakest connection. You try to make a call, but the call keeps dropping. When you finally succeed in getting through, the line is full of static, making conversation barely intelligible. You try to send a text message, but are unsure if the message was successfully transmitted. One person might be urgently attempting to contact his business partner, a different person to reach his

spouse. Each traveler in the area has their own story, yet each one suffers the same anxiety and frustration. The Beis Hamikdash did not stand merely as a place of avodah, a place where we could bring korbanos and perform other acts of avodah. The building was not an end unto itself; rather, it served as a portal, a means for us to connect with Hakadosh Baruch Hu. The building is gone, but ultimately, it is not only the building for which we mourn. One without service is certainly quite disturbed by the loss of the cell phone tower, but ultimately, cares not for the tower but for his lack of ability to connect. We, as well, mourn the loss of the physical building, but ultimately, our distress stems not from the lack of the physical structure, but for the lack of our personal ability to connect and speak to

Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Today, when we sit down and attempt to make that call, we are met with frustration. Someone sits down to

Did I just speak to Hashem? Do

I have any idea of what I just said? It didn’t feel like much of a conversation at all. These and so many more of our actions feel empty, as if we are just going through the motions without tapping into something deeper. They lack the instant electrifying effect of connecting to Hakadosh Baruch Hu — when these actions were deliberately designed to create that very connection. It is this that we are missing today. Yes, when we talk about the Churban, we talk about the Beis Hamikdash. But if we want to see the effect of its destruction, the place to look is within ourselves. It’s not so much the destruction of a building; it’s the destruction of the quality of our lives. The Seder Hayom makes a most remarkable statement. He says that proper Tisha B’Av protocol dictates that each and every person should sit down and compose his own Kinnos to recite. For those who cannot do so, the standardized Kinnos will have to suffice. What can this possibly mean? How are we supposed to compose something new that no one thought to write in the

past 2,000 years? We’ve never experienced the Beis Hamikdash, neither its glory nor its destruction, and we weren’t there to personally witness the tragedies of all the previous centuries. What can we possibly bring to the discussion? Even if we were to attempt to compose Kinnos on contemporary tragedies, wouldn’t we be better served asking two or three leaders of each generation to compose something relevant for the times? If, however, we understand the tragedy of the Churban on a personal level, the words of the Seder Hayom come to life. Only you yourself know how much you’ve tried to speak

So today, when we sit down to cry for the Churban HaBayis, we’re ultimately sitting down to cry for ourselves. The Rishonim and others indicate that the days of aveilus don’t end with Tisha B’Av; rather, they begin with the period of the Three Weeks, continue through the days of teshuvah of

New Release! Elul, and culminate with the Yomim Noraim. We are dealing with a process to rebuild that connection, a process that begins with crying and ends with repairing that connection anew. If we are to rebuild our connection with Hakadosh Baruch Hu, our first step is to properly assess what we are missing. A person can only aim as high as he can picture his goal. A child growing up from a young age in a broken home can’t really appreciate and know what to strive for in creating a beautifully constructed marriage. Who are we? How great can we really be? What does it mean to carry the title of being a Yid? We’ve grown so far removed from Hakadosh Baruch Hu that we really need to be educated and instructed, little by little, as to who we really are and how we are supposed to conduct ourselves. A large portion of the Kinnos is devoted to describing the grandeur of Klal Yisroel, of the beauty and uniqueness we carried in times gone by. This is not merely to add to our feelings of loss, but rather to serve as a primer in how we ought to be viewing ourselves. If we take the time to understand how special each and every individual member of Klal Yisroel is, and with that, come to realize just how far we have fallen, we can begin taking the first steps toward rebuilding our relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

out of the cellar of the inn, the Nazis forced the group into wagons and took them back to No Man’s Land, where they’d been told in no uncertain terms never to return. Again, they began to wander for miles upon miles, without knowing where to turn. The parents were becoming increasingly worried, and the thought began to cross their minds that they might not survive this ordeal. They decided to make a plan to at least increase the chances of survival for the older children by finding a place where they could smuggle them over the border. As for the babies, knowing they’d never be able to survive in such circumstances, they began looking for a place of shelter — perhaps a small hut or barn — where they would leave them in the hope that some caring person would find them. The families had to prove that they were upstanding people who would not be a burden on society. Some of the families immigrated to what was then known as Palestine, others to England. My father’s family was able to get mail to my grandfather’s sister who lived in New York at the time. My great-grandparents had been very unhappy when their daughter left Europe to begin a new life in the “treifene medinah,” but that was yet another example of hashgacha pratis, as it was critical that the refugees had someone advocating on their behalf on the other side of the ocean. My father’s aunt worked tirelessly for their release, and with great effort on her part, she was able to procure visas and arrange for my father’s family to immigrate to the United States. My family was eternally grateful for what my father’s aunt had done for them. The family set out from Trieste, Italy, and arrived in the United States in November of 1939 on the S.S. Saturnia, one of the last ships to leave Europe before the war. zan and shochet. In those days there was very little Jewish presence in the area; it was largely a vacation town. My aunts and uncle had no choice but to attend the local public school. One day, shortly before Pesach, my uncle came home from school with painted eggs. That was a turning point for the family, and my grandfather decided that he must open a school so that his children could get proper chinuch. That is how the Yeshiva of Spring Valley was born. My grandfather was the mashgiach ruchni of the yeshivah, as well as its first rebbi. My grandmother was also very involved in the school in its early stages. My uncle remembers many meetings dedicated to the planning and development of the yeshivah taking place around their dining room table. My grandfather was very involved in all chinuch aspects of the school until his sudden and tragic petirah in 1945 at the young age of 42. In 1973, my fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother passed away. My father and Resi continued to correspond for a short while, filling in one another on the years that had passed. One day my father received a phone call from a stranger who asked to meet him as he had a package for him. My father met the man who then presented him with the tea set from his home in Kittsee. Resi had sent it with the man when she heard he was traveling to New York and begged him not to let it out of his sight for even one second until he had hand-delivered it to my father. In 2010, my husband and I went to visit Vienna. We, too, went to the kever of my great-grandfather; at that point another 35 years had passed since my parents had been there. We also visited Julia, one of the caretaker’s daughters who was still alive at the time. She had very vivid and fond memories of my family, which she shared with us, and she sang a Jewish song that my father had taught her over 70 years earlier. I had heard so much about the shul in Kittsee, but I had never

The story of the Jews of Kittsee has been documented in newspapers and is known all over the world. We don’t understand the ways of Hashem, but we do know that all Hashem does is for the good. When the Jews of Kittsee were thrown out of their homes and were not accepted into any country, I am sure they questioned why they had to undergo such hardships. They most certainly wished they could have returned to their homes and to their previous lives. But unbeknownst to them at the time, their forced expulsion prompted their escape from Europe before it was too late, and that was in actuality what saved them. Somehow my grandfather had been able to smuggle a Sefer Torah out of Vienna and bring it to the United States. The Nazis, ym”sh, had slashed the Sefer Torah with a knife, exactly on the words “‫ כן‬,‫וכאשר יענו אותו‬ ‫ — ירבה וכן יפרוץ‬But the more they (the Egyptians) oppressed them, the more they (Klal Yisroel) proliferated and spread.” The Jews of Kittsee were similar to the Jews of Mitzrayim in this way. The more they suffered at the hands of the Nazis, the more they increased and grew stronger. Klal Yisroel was dealt an extraordinary blow during the Holocaust, but baruch Hashem, we survived as a nation, and today we continue to persevere and flourish.

how many meaningful articles I read on the Churban and how many kinnos I say, I still have trouble connecting to the deep-seated aveilus of Tisha B’Av. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the fault is mine and that my failure to internalize the unfathomable losses that have occurred on that fateful day throughout the years is further compounded by the fact that we live in a time and place where we enjoy a multitude of brachos in our lives. But last summer, when I signed up for a heritage tour in Poland, Tisha B’Av took on a greater meaning.

The tour, by Project Mesorah, wound its way from Warsaw to Krakow, stopping along the way at mekomos hakedoshos and historic sites of devastating significance. With our journey ending an hour away from my father’s hometown of Bedzin, my husband and I both knew that there was no way we could leave Poland without making a short stop in the place that, even today, my father refers to as “back home.” Of course, taking a trip that spanned both the miles and the years required some preparatory investigation. Growing up, I had always seen my father observing the exact yahrtzeit of his mother, who died when the Germans came to round up most of the town’s Jews three years after the initial invasion, and watching an interview that my father had given years earlier in preparation for our trip, I was surprised to realize that he knew

that she had been buried in a mass grave in the local Jewish cemetery. I also managed to discreetly wheedle some previously unknown details out of my father about his childhood, supplementing that information with my own research on Bedzin and its history. Apparently, Bedzin was one of the oldest cities in the Za-

An article from the Zaglembie World Organization’s archives described the horrific end of Bedzin’s Jewish community on a day that had been destined for tears, concluding with the words, “On the ninth of Av, the day Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans, the Bedzin Jewish community, Jerusalem de Zaglembie, ceased to exist.” Tisha B’Av? Had the final end to my father’s hometown, a town that had been dubbed an Eastern-European Yerushalayim, come on Tisha B’Av? The answer is, apparently, yes. And after years of not being able to relate to the concept of the Churban, it suddenly came together for me in a very personal way just as we were ready to leave for Poland. And so I found myself one picture-perfect Sunday morning last August, standing inside the locked gates of the cemetery that had been used by the Jewish communities in the neighboring towns of Bedzin and Czeladz to bury their dead since 1915. Never in my lifetime could I have ever imagined that one day I would be davening in close proximity to where the grandmother I never knew had been buried, but it seemed only right that I ended up there, bringing a nechamah of some sorts to a place where the ashes of the churban still smoldered. While many of the matzeivos in the cemetery had been restored somewhat recently, I knew that there

Could it be any more fitting to come there as living proof that my father had raised a beautiful family, and that he was having the incredible zechus of seeing a third generation carrying on the traditions that he remembered from his own youth? their torch forward, and that I was taking full responsibility for making sure that those flames continued burning brightly for my own children and grandchildren. We spent just one more hour in Bedzin. Only one of the two homes where my father had once lived was still standing. The spot where the other had once stood was now paved over and used as a parking area, a stark reminder that the Bedzin that my father still treasures in his heart was long gone. We visited one of the town’s older cemeteries, drove down streets where I knew several relatives had once lived, and stopped at the memorial for the magnificent shul that no longer was. I left one more kvittel at the memorial for Bedzin’s Jewish community that marked the spot where the Kamionka ghetto had once been before we headed off for the Katowice Airport, taking advantage of one last opportunity to take pictures of road signs bearing the name “Bedzin,” proof that the large town I always imagined as having been swallowed up by the earth really did exist. It seemed wrong in a way to feel uplifted after leaving a place where a thriving Jewish community the size of Boro Park today was wiped out, but I did. I couldn’t change the fact that terrible things happened in Bedzin, but going back and setting foot in the town that is still so much a part of my father’s identity, and davening in the place where my grandmother was buried, made me feel connected to the family members that I had always wished I had known. Much like Shabbos Nachamu comforts us with the knowledge that the tears of the Churban will one day be replaced by the joyous arrival of Moshiach, I can only hope that my trip to Bedzin brought nechamah to my father’s family in Gan Eden, showing them that there are children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren keeping their memories alive and perpetuating their legacies for future generations.

BY: GITTY KAY At this point in the summer, I'm sure you've noticed the latest tie-dye trend! You may think it's just a fun camp activity that gives kids the opportunity to ruin some old white socks â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but no! The method can be used on everything these days: clothing, shoes, hair accessories, towels or bags. And itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not only about having some crafty fun; the end results are also for real use. Follow along as I teach you three cool tie-dyeing techniques. Each one can be done with many different articles of clothing and accessories, so don't limit yourself to the three featured items. Have fun as you get color crazed!

PERSONALIZED TIE-DYE BEACH TOWEL Supplies:

One-step tie-dye kit (Tulip brand) This can be purchased at any local craft store or online. You can also buy fabric dye powder and use your own spray bottles. White beach towel Duct tape (or strong masking tape) Rubber gloves

Prep your work space:

You may want to do this project outdoors, as it can get a bit messy! Spread a plastic tablecloth on your work surface. Wear rubber gloves and junk clothes. An apron or smock is also a good idea!

Time to tie-dye! 1. 3

Prepare the dye according to package instructions.

2. Spread the towel on the plastic covering your work surface. 3.

3 Using tape, form the letters of your name on the towel, making them nice and big. To keep the name centered, start with the middle letter of the name in the center of the towel, and work your way out on either side.

4. Press the tape down to make sure itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nice and secure. 5.

4 Arrange the spray bottles in the color order you would like to follow.

6. Try to visualize the amount of space you will give each color. It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to be perfectly even. (If you do want perfect measurements, you can use a tape measure and make little marks spaced evenly apart.) 7.

5 Spray a generous amount of each color dye over the desired area, overlapping them a bit as you go along. Be careful when using the spray bottles, as they may drip.

6 Let the towel dry completely.

7 Carefully remove the tape.

Set the colors: 1. Place the towel in the dryer on its own for an hour. 2. Wash the towel on its own on a regular cycle, and then dry again. The colors may run a bit into the name, but the letters will still stay sharp!

3. The first few times you wash the towel between uses, wash it in its own cycle.

Get the tie-dye look with supplies you probably already have at home â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and without the mess!

Time to tie-dye! 1. Fill the spray bottle half with bleach and half with water. 2.

Set the color: 1. Place the item on its own in the washing machine and wash it on a regular cycle. Use detergent. 2. Dry it completely.

SHARPIE MARKER TIE-DYE 1

Time to tie-dye! Supplies:

Sharpie markers Rubbing alcohol Eye dropper Cup Cardboard Any item that’s made of white or light-colored fabric

Prep your work space: This activity is way safer and cleaner than the other two! Gloves and aprons are not necessary, but I do recommend covering the table you’ll be working on just to be on the safe side!

2. Choose the colors and design you plan to create. 3. Make sure the fabric you are working on is completely flat. You may want to hold it down with your other hand. 4.

3 Draw five to six dots to form a circle.

4 Pour rubbing alcohol into a cup.

5 Using the eyedropper, slowly let the alcohol drip into the center of the circle formed by the colored dots.

Watch as the colors slowly spread outward. The more alcohol you release from the dropper, the wider the colors will spread; that’s how you can control how big or small the design should be.

2 If you’ll be dyeing a double-layered item, place a cardboard in between the two layers of fabric (so the colors don’t run through to the other side).

This is a fun activity to try on any piece of scrap fabric! Play around until you get the hang of it and feel ready to try the technique on something you’d really use! This is just one pattern; enjoy exploring different designs using markers and alcohol.

7 Work on one circle at a time, leaving enough space between them so each one has room to spread.

9. The circles can be differently sized, depending on how big and how spread apart you draw the initial dots, and how much alcohol you let drip into the center.

Set the colors: 1. Iron the fabric to set the colors permanently. 2. When washing the first few times, put it in its own cycle to make sure the colors donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t run onto other articles of clothing.

Over the years, there have been many mishaps when individuals have set out on trails improperly prepared or clothed or have conducted themselves in an unsafe manner while hiking, requiring search-and-rescue teams to take to the woods and bring them back to safety. Trail safety should not be taken lightly. Please read and adhere to the safety guidelines detailed on this page. The Monsey View has featured extensive coverage on trail safety and etiquette in issues 155 through 161. Feel free to access them on our website, pick up back issues in our office, or contact our office to have the articles emailed to you.

SAFETY POINTERS Proper packing: Never leave for a hike without a proper knapsack equipped with enough water, charged cell phones, navigation devices, flashlights, emergency shelter, a first-aid kit, and some ready-to-eat, non-perishable nutrition options. Proper planning: Before leaving the trailhead, acquire a map, study it well, and know your route. Always check the weather before heading out. It gets dark in the woods around sunset, so make sure you leave enough time to get out safely. If there is a park ranger at the trailhead, check in with the ranger before heading out.

SIGNS TO KNOW:

Proper footgear: Remember to change into proper footgear, appropriate for the terrain, prior to setting out. Hikers should never hike alone, and should always share their plans with someone outside of the hiking group before heading out. Stay on track. Read and follow all markers and do not veer off the trail. Always check for ticks after a hike.

KAKIAT COUNTY PARK MONTEBELLO, NY

NOTE: There are various opinions in Jewish communities about hiking during the Nine Days, so you may wish to consult your rav for guidance.

Many have underestimated the hike difficulty of trails in this park, and over the years there have been many incidents of people ending up lost deep in the adjoining 47,000-acre Harriman State Park. For this reason, in the interest of safety, we are publishing the safest way to hike this area. PARKING: You can route with your GPS to Kakiat Park, or 584 Haverstraw Road, Montebello, NY 10901(A). There is a large parking lot in the park. You should try to park in the marked spaces. If all the marked spaces are filled, it is customary to park along the side all around the parking lot loop (but not on the road leading to the park). There is a bathroom (actually an outhouse) that is currently open, but you might want to use the one at home if you are fussy. ABOUT THE HIKES: There are two loop hikes in this park. The first one is a 2-mile strenuous hike that takes the Orange (Mountain) Trail and returns via the White (Kakiat) Trail. This is a climb 550 feet in elevation, and you need to be in shape for it. This hike offers views of the New York City skyline on a clear day, and streaming brooks at times of high water levels. The second hike takes the Blue (Old Mill) Trail and returns via the White (Kakiat) Trail. This hike is an easy, short 0.75-mile hike suitable for all families and ages. You can plan this as a nice family outing by combining it with viewing the Mahwah River from the bridge or next to it, and picnicking at the picnic pavilion or benches next to the river. Enter the hiking area through a gate across the road that goes over a bridge that crosses the Mahwah River(B). There is a place next to the river on your left where people like to picnic, as well as a park bench. There is no swimming allowed here. Further ahead on your left you can see the picnic pavilion, which currently has every second table covered to reduce occupancy to maintain social distancing(C). Trail begins straight ahead(D). Go straight ahead on the Orange. Close thereafter, you will see the White (Kakiat) Trail on your right(E). Keep going straight on the Orange (we will be returning via this White Trail). Follow the Orange Trail markers, which will curve to the left (don’t go straight on the grassy unmarked path)(F). After a little while, the Orange Trail will curve to the right(G) and cross an underground gas pipeline(H). On the other side of the gas line, the Orange Trail continues up steps(I) and begins its ascent up the mountain with the trail going over an exposed rock face in many places (watch your footing here)(J). As you go up the Orange Trail, you will see the first rock outcrop on your right. This outcrop is not the viewpoint. Continue up the Orange Trail as it passes a felled tree(K). Continue up, and you will see the next rock outcrop on your right(L). There will be what looks like a path at a straight orange blaze, which is a very steep, dangerous path and is not the way to the viewpoint. Continue and you will see a blaze where the Orange Trail turns left(M). Right past this blaze, there is an unmarked path to your right that will take you to the viewpoint(N). On a clear day, the Manhattan skyline is visible from the viewpoint(O). It is a beautiful place to rest and enjoy the view(P), but you must be really careful with your footing here, so it is not safe for small children. When you are finished at the viewpoint, carefully retrace your steps to continue on the Orange Trail. The Orange Trail makes a loop around and goes down for a little while before heading up. (If you are going along the rock face, you have taken the Orange Trail back to the parking lot. If you’ve had enough, you can return at this point by retracing the trail to the parking lot, but if you want to continue, make sure to take the Orange away from the rock face.) The Orange Trail continues up the mountain, and there is one spot where you have to climb on rock and need to be agile, step into chiseled portions of rock, and use your hands to help you get up the rock face(Q). If this is too difficult for you, then please head back. The Orange Trail continues up the mountain, with some steep portions. It is a lot safer doing this trail in the upward direction(R). Try to plant your feet on the upward portion of larger rocks or tree roots that are solidly embedded in the ground. Stepping on loose pebbles can cause you to slip. As you approach the top of the mountain, scenic views will open up on your right(S). Follow the Orange blazes, and at the top of the mountain there’s a large rock at the scenic view above a cliff face (careful here). You can see the Manhattan skyline from this location as well(T). When you are ready, continue on the Orange Trail. There are warning signs that you are entering Harriman State Park, and you should only proceed if you are well trained(U). The Orange Trail crosses the power line, and you need to be sure you cross the power line and do not head down the power line(V). On the other side of the power

(L) Continuing on Orange, you will see a rock outcrap to the right.

line, the Orange Trail continues on a woods road that heads down the mountain(W). After 500 feet, you will reach the end of the Orange Trail and you must turn right onto the White Trail(X). Be careful to turn right, as turning left will take you deep into Harriman State Park, and going straight will take you farther along on the woods road. After turning right on the White Trail, the White Trail goes down the mountain and will take you back to the parking lot. The White Trail crosses the power line once(Y) and passes the gas pipelines twice. First it crosses the upper gas pipeline(Z). And then, it makes a right turn onto the lower gas pipeline(AA), continues for only about 50 feet, and then makes an immediate left off the pipeline. Be careful at these pipeline crossings, as people have gotten lost here and gone up or down the gas pipelines instead of following the trail. (A wooden post was recently placed at the lower gas pipeline for additional clarity). After three-quarters of a mile, you will reach a right turn on the White Trail, where the Blue Trail begins on your left(BB). Make a right following the White Trail out to the road to the parking lot(CC). OLD MILL TRAIL â&#x20AC;&#x201D; KAKIAT TRAIL LOOP 0.75-MILE LOOP

As soon as you cross the bridge, the Blue (Old Mill) Trail begins on your right, and the Orange (Mountain) trail begins straight ahead. Make a right on the Blue Trail(DD). This is an easy trail on level ground that goes along the Mahwah River. It passes the remnants of an old water mill, which is closed to the public but is interesting to look at. The Blue Trail loops around and ends at the White Trail. Be careful to continue straight ahead on the White Trail to get back to the parking lot. (If you make a right on the White Trail, you will go deep into Harriman State Park.) You can download the map of this hike at RocklandBuzz. com. TYPES OF BUNKERS WHAT IS A BUNKER? A bunker is a concealed shelter or hideout, usually underground, meant to protect people and property from bombs or other attacks. In contrast, blockhouses are usually above ground. Though generally used in the military, bunkers can also be used for protection against natural disasters such as earthquakes or tornadoes. The term “bunker” as we know it today refers to military hideouts dug into the ground, but this wasn’t always so. Indeed, in the 1800s the word referred to various kinds of dug-up or hidden areas, each built with a different purpose. Back then, a bunker could refer to an area in the house used for coal storage, or the section of the ship found below decks. When underground shelters were built for military use during World War I, they were referred to as “bunkers’’ only by the Germans. The English, in contrast, simply called them dugouts. During World War II, the term finally appeared in the English language in reference to military bunkers, though it still referred to dugouts built specifically by the Germans.

Bunkers come in all shapes and sizes and can be built in a variety of ways. Here are some of the more popular types: A TRENCH is a small concrete building that is dug partially into the ground. A trench bunker can be an individual bunker or part of a network of trenches. It is generally better at protecting people than a typical open trench. It provides shelter in cases of air attacks, and also from nasty weather. Like a trench, a PILLBOX is also a small building made of concrete, but the difference lies in its small windows through which inhabitants can shoot out. The term “pillbox” came to be because these bunkers resembled the boxes pills used to come in. Pillboxes were used a lot during World War I. INDUSTRIAL BUNKERS were built by many nations during the world wars to protect important industries from being bombed. For example, many mines in Germany and France were transformed into bunkers to protect them. Industrial bunkers are often built to protect food storage areas, data storage areas, and they’re sometimes even built as places people could live in. MODERN NUCLEAR BUNKERS are sealed to prevent contamination from nuclear fallout and to keep deadly radon gas and airborne toxins out, including those from biochemical weapons.

AROUND THE WORLD Apparently, the Soviets were quite concerned about nuclear war because they maintained huge bunker systems. In fact, one of the reasons the Moscow Metro and Kyiv Metro systems were dug so deeply was so they could double as nuclear shelters in case of attack. A BUNKER BENEATH THE WHITE HOUSE BUNKER BUSINESS Despite the many decades that have passed since the end of the Cold War, companies that build private nuclear bunkers are still around. For a hefty fee, your custom-made bunker can protect you from the heat, radiation and radioactive fallout of a nuclear explosion. A standard package will include a plumbing system, a filtration system for drinking water, and maybe even a power generator and shielding for electronics in case of an electromagnetic pulse attack. You’ll want to stock your bunker with plenty of dried, canned or otherwise preserved food. Here’s hoping your investment will be a complete waste of money!

BUNKERS DURING THE HOLOCAUST During the Holocaust, many Yidden tried to avoid detection from the Nazis, ym”sh, by sheltering in makeshift bunkers. These were usually cellars, attics or hidden spaces in the ghettos, or out of sight in forests or on farms. Inhabitants had to stay completely silent for fear their noise would give them away. The Nazis went from house to house seeking hiding places that sheltered Jews. They tapped walls, searched for hidden doorways, and even burned down buildings, hoping to force the Yidden to emerge from hiding.

Some of Switzerland’s bunkers later became tourist attractions and today house both hotels and museums, including the Sasso San Gottardo Museum.

The White House Secret Bunker, known as the Presidential Emergency Operations Center (PEOC), was first built during World War II when Franklin D. Roosevelt was president. It was meant to protect him in case of an aerial attack on Washington, D.C. Since then, the PEOC has been used as a place of protection and communication whenever the president or his staffers were deemed to be in danger. The PEOC is located five stories down from the East Wing of the White House. It has its own food and air supply and is surrounded by very thick concrete walls to seal it off from radiation in case of nuclear attack. The bunker is protected with vault-type doors and biometric access points. Several tunnels enter and exit the bunker. Two that we know of completely leave the White House, one of which leads to the Treasury Building and another that leads to an entrance on H Street. On September 11, 2001, when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, President George W. Bush was in Florida. However, Vice President Dick Cheney, his wife and other officials who were in Washington, D.C., at the time were immediately whisked away to the presidential bunker to keep them safe. More recently, on May 31, 2020, during the protests over George Floyd’s death, President Donald Trump was reported to have been sent to the secret bunker. The president later denied that he was in danger and declared that he had only visited the bunker for a short inspection. Which report was fake news? You decide.
