It was already late enough on Purim for the traffic to let up. We coasted along the streets of Monsey, oblivious to the chaos and congestion that had reigned just an hour earlier. We’d spent the better part of the day in Boro Park, and had arrived back just in time for easy driving. We mapped out our route, hoping to still push in whatever possible in the two hours left to Mincha. I pulled up at corner Route 59 and College Road to withdraw some cash to fund the rest of the day. I entered Chase, happy to see that here, too, I had missed the crowds. The ATM machines were out of order, so I went in, and after a short wait, approached the teller. I handed her my debit card. “A thousand dollars, please,” I said. “I’ll take five hundred-dollar bills, ten —” “Sir,” she replied. “We only have three hundred dollars left. I’ll give you three.” “Oh, okay,” I shrugged. “So I’ll take three hundred-dollar bills, and the rest in twenties.” “Sir! You didn’t hear what I said. We have three hundred dollar left. Not more.” “You mean, nothing else? No singles? No fivedollar bills?” “Not even a quarter! Don’t you know it’s Purim today? I can give you our last fifteen twenty-dollar bills, but nothing more. We’re emptied out!” I left in shock, the last of the bank’s bills in my hand. Still shaking my head, I entered my car, marveling that the day the bank emptied out was not a day marked for self-indulgence or a day that all stores are offering super specials or the day the new season’s lines are in. The bank emptied out on a day designated for giving, when thousands upon thousands of dollars were withdrawn from Yiddish bank accounts to be given to others. Given as appreciation to rebbis and teachers, handed out freely for our community mosdos, generously distributed to the poor and the needy and other worthy causes. And I was moved, thinking how much chesed and how much goodness flowed through Monsey on this Purim day. Proud of My Brothers

The balloon will certainly be strong enough to get us all off the ground, and it can also bring us down safely.� In this week’s parsha, Moshe Rabbeinu descends from Har Sinai with a light emanating from his face. The Midrash explains that there had been a drop of ink left over after Moshe finished writing the Torah, and Hashem took that drop of ink and rubbed it on Moshe’s head. The rays of light emanating from Moshe’s face came from that drop of ink. The Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh, zy�a, asks how it could be possible that there was any ink left over in the first place. After all, Hashem prepared the ink and Hashem dictated the Torah, and Hashem is perfect, so Hashem must have prepared the exact amount of ink needed. There is a pasuk in the Torah that states that Moshe was “very humble, more than any person on the face of the earth� (Bamidbar 12:3). Moshe was such an anav that when it came time to write this pasuk, he omitted the yud in the word anav. Because he omitted the yud, there was a drop of ink left

As we begin preparing for Pesach, we turn our focus to the parallel between haughtiness and chometz. Anavah is the antidote to haughtiness, but only if it is true anavah, like that of Moshe Rabbeinu. R’ Yitzchok Radviller, zy”a, warns that the yetzer hara can bring to a person’s heart false anivus so that the person does not feel his avodah is worth anything, and he falls to despair. R’ Yitzchok Radviller warns that a person has to look at himself and see if the lowliness that he feels comes from the yetzer hara or from true tzidkas. The Alter Rebbe cites R’ Simcha Bunim of Peshischa, saying that every person should keep two pieces of paper in his pocket: one that states that he is but dust and ashes, and the other that the world was created for him. The Yismach Yisrael, zy”a, on Parshas Noach, explains that a person can use this method to stay balanced on the middle road. This concept can be compared to the balloonist. If a person begins to grow haughty, he can “release hot air from the flap” by reminding himself that he is but dust and ashes. If, on the other hand, he feels lowly and depressed, he can “add hot air into the balloon” by reminding himself that the world was created for him and that he has the power to alter the fate of the world. If we keep the proper balance, we can indeed alter the fate of the world.

More Questions Than Answers as Coronavirus Officially Proclaimed a Pandemic Coronavirus is continuing to wind its way through New York State, with a total of 173 cases reported as of Purim, the highest in the nation. This number includes 36 confirmed cases in New York City, 108 in Westchester and 6 in Rockland County. The rapid spread of the virus is being tied to Westchester’s Jewish community, where a lawyer became the state’s second confirmed coronavirus case last week, prompting the precautionary quarantine of 1,000 people and the closure of Young Israel of New Rochelle until further notice. Several community members were later confirmed to have the virus, including the shul’s rav and a seven-year-old Bronx girl who attends Westchester Torah Academy. Hoping to prevent any additional spread of the virus from New Rochelle, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday that all schools, houses of worship and other large gathering facilities within a one-mile radius would be closed from March 12 through March 25, as per the recommendation of State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker. Cuomo deployed the National Guard to New Rochelle to help deliver food to those under quarantine and to assist in cleaning public spaces in the containment area. Those measures came after coronavirus made its way across the Hudson River to Rockland County when two workers at a New Rochelle bas mitzvah attended by the initial Westchester victim were diagnosed with coronavirus after they had been at several Monsey simchos. Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert warned that anyone who attended

any of those affairs may have been exposed to the virus and urged them to take precautions as well. All six of the Rockland County cases are Ramapo residents, reported The Journal News. The East Ramapo School District closed all of its schools for cleaning on both Monday and Tuesday as a precautionary measure after five public school students in the district were found to have been exposed to the virus. Three students were confirmed to have the virus by Tuesday, prompting East Ramapo to close Hempstead Elementary School, Pomona Middle School and Ramapo High School through March 21, with hundreds of students, teachers, staff, visitors and parents who were in the school during the times when the exposures occurred sent into quarantine. After declaring a state of emergency on Sunday, Governor Cuomo has called on the federal government to allow private labs and automated testing for the virus in order to meet the increased demand in New York. The governor also encouraged state residents to work from home whenever possible and to avoid densely populated areas to further prevent the spread of the disease. Cuomo criticized the federal government for what he termed its sluggish response to the spread of coronavirus. “Worse than the virus now is the fear pandemic — and getting these additional facilities online will ensure we have more facts to keep people calm,” said the governor. Addressing a shortage of hand-sanitizing solution that has led to price gouging, Cuomo announced that the state would begin producing 100,000 gallons per week of NYS Clean, a hand sanitizer with a 75% alcohol content and a scent described by the governor in a lighthearted moment as having “a floral bouquet” with notes of lilac, hydrangea and tulip. The state will begin distributing NYS Clean in New Rochelle and it will be supplied to government agencies, schools, prisons, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and other agencies. Taking a swipe at Purell, Amazon and eBay, Cuomo warned that if price gouging continues, he would release the state’s lower-priced hand sanitizer to the general market, passing the savings along to the public and undercutting competitors. Brooklyn’s Jewish community has remained untouched by the virus as of late Tuesday night, but with families gathering together on Purim, experts warn that the disease is likely to continue spreading. Numerous chagigas and large gatherings were cancelled because of coronavirus, and the Orthodox Union, Yeshiva University and
the Agudah all reached out to their subscribers discussing how those affected by the outbreak should deal with their chiyuv of reading Megillas Esther on Purim. Fifteen people in New Jersey have been diagnosed with coronavirus, reported NorthJersey.com, with cases confirmed in Teaneck, Englewood and Passaic. Over 20,000 New Yorkers have signed up for COVID, the city’s text notification system that provides the latest updates for those who text COVID to 692692. A directive by Mayor Bill de Blasio warned that those who hike their prices on items in high demand because of the outbreak would be fined. Indeed, a Manhattan hardware store was slapped with a penalty after signs posted listed the price of Clorox and Lysol sprays at $20, reported NBC News. The store was also selling three packs of antibacterial wipes for $40. “This is a crisis, not a time to profit,” said de Blasio. Price gouging on coronavirus-related items can be reported in New York City to the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection by calling 311, or to the New York State Attorney General’s office at 1-800-697-1220. Overseas, the Israeli government announced on Monday afternoon that everyone arriving in Eretz Yisroel would be subject to a fourteen-day quarantine period. Looking ahead toward Pesach, yeshivah and seminary students in Eretz Yisroel who might typically be returning home as of Rosh Chodesh Nissan have been questioning their plans, unsure if they will be allowed to return after yom tov without being subjected to a quarantine period. The Centers for Disease Control and numerous departments of health have issued multiple advisories, warning anyone who is feeling sick to stay home and for the general population to wash their hands frequently with soap and water for a minimum of 20 seconds, or to use hand sanitizers that are at least 60% alcohol. People are also urged to avoid handshaking and touching their faces and are advised to routinely disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. The Jewish community at large has responded to the outbreak with increased calls for tefillah, particularly on Taanis Esther and Purim, to prevent the spread of coronavirus. A letter published by the Agudah’s Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah on Sunday read, “In light of the coronavirus disease that is spreading now in many countries, including the United States, which is impacting the health and the livelihoods of our brethren and everyone in the country, we suggest that on the upcoming day of Taanis Esther we increase our Tehillim and davening that the decree be removed from us and the entire world.”
Precautionary Quarantine: What Does It Mean? While precautionary quarantines have been making headlines in recent days, the concept of home isolation
is rare in our times. According to The Journal News, those who are instructed to go into quarantine need to: • Avoid all contact with others until the quarantine period has elapsed. • Remain at home, which includes not going to work, school, shul or other public places. • Stay in a specific room and away from others as much as possible. • Wear a face mask if they are near other family members. • Refrain from having guests. • Use a separate bathroom or clean a shared bathroom after every use. • Have food and other items left outside their door. • Avoid sharing dishes, cups, cutlery, towels and bedding with other family members. All items should be washed with soap and water after use. • Call their doctor for further instructions, if necessary.
Legislation Introduced in Albany to End License Suspensions Over Unpaid Tickets Nearly 1.7 million New York State drivers have had their licenses suspended over the past 28 months because of unpaid traffic tickets, a practice that is coming under fire by lawmakers in the State Assembly. Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein is co-sponsoring the legislation introduced by Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter to amend traffic laws and the abovementioned practice, which resulted in almost two-thirds of all license suspensions in the state over a nearly two-year period. Eichenstein noted that often drivers aren’t aware that their licenses have been suspended because of unpaid fines, and find themselves facing criminal charges and arrests, in addition to serious financial penalties. Under the new legislation, drivers would have the ability to pay down any monies owed without the risk of losing their driving privileges. A statement released by Eichenstein said that passing the legislation would give law enforcement officers the ability to focus on those who present real risks on the state’s roadways as well as those who perpetuate more serious crimes. “Let’s keep our safe and responsible drivers on the roads instead of being embroiled in needless and wasteful court appearances,” said Eichenstein. “This new legislation would represent a victory for all New York drivers.”

Recap: The Potolskys receive an overwhelming response to their ad about the broken cuckoo clock they’re selling, but so far there are no buyers. Meir Potolsky tells his mother that he thinks what makes the cuckoo bird come out and cuckoo at random times is his ball-throwing in the house. Emmanuel gets back to his questioner with the verification that Reb Yisroel’s family would love for him to move in with them, but that he, for some reason, keeps turning them down. The next morning, just as Elisheva was about to leave for the new house, there was a knock at the door. “Someone’s here to see the clock!” Chani announced loudly. Eliyahu, who was home from Shacharis already, escorted the man into the empty dining room. It was silent for a few moments; the potential buyer was probably appraising the value of the clock. “Nice piece,” Elisheva heard him say after a few minutes. “I understand it’s not working properly. Is that true?” “Yes,” Eliyahu replied. “A clockmaker once told us that there’s a problem in the delicate balance of the mechanism.” Meir was probably making desperate hinting gestures, because Eliyahu suddenly added, with a smile in his tone, “My son sometimes gets the bird to pop out. If his ball strikes a specific spot that apparently jogs the balance of the cogs or the springs back into place, the cuckoo bird works once. Meir, you threw your ball a few minutes ago, right?” “Yes,” the boy replied. “So maybe we’ll see the bird in action,” the man’s voice said. “What time does it announce?”
“Something else each time,” Meir answered bashfully. “Once it cuckooed three times; sometimes it’s five times. I don’t know how it decides.” “May I take a closer look at the clock?” “Sure,” Eliyahu said. There was a long silence, which was suddenly broken by the cuckoo bird; it cuckooed eight times. “If it’s able to work,” the man said, his voice muffled — his face was probably buried in the clock’s innards — “that means there is definitely hope.” Eliyahu smiled. “We always knew there was hope. The thing is that the repair costs money, and it wasn’t worth it for us.” “It won’t cost me money,” the man said. “I know a bit about these things, and I’ll try to tinker with it myself.” “Are you a clockmaker?” “An amateur.” “Nice.” A few seconds passed, and then the buyer said, “Alright, you told me on the phone two and a half thousand, right?” Elisheva dropped the shopping list she was holding. “No,” Eliyahu said. “We spoke about two hundred fifty.” “I don’t understand jokes so well, Rabbi

But I try to be a fair person, so I’ll pay you its real worth in dollars.” “Really, sir, maybe I’m the one who doesn’t understand jokes.” Eliyahu sounded dumbstruck, which was much the way Elisheva herself felt as she hurried to the doorway of the dining room to finally see who the buyer was. He wore a blue cap, had a small beard, and didn’t look particularly young. “It’s not a joke. Cuckoo clocks are expensive items — don’t you know that?” “I know, but…” “But you didn’t think you had such an expensive piece in your house, huh? In any case, I’d be happy to buy it for two and a half thousand dollars — even though it’s probably worth closer to three thousand, but you will deduct some of that because it’s broken, right?” And without another word, the man went over to the clock and measured its circumference with his arms. Then he tried to lift it. “Heavy,” he stated. “Can someone help me take it down to my car?” Binyamin, who had entered the house just then and put his tefillin bag on the folding table in the hallway, heard the question. “I can help,” he offered, stepping into the dining room. “Great,” said the man. “Grab here, carefully, so nothing happens to the clock’s delicate feet, and I’ll hold it from here. Hey, one second.” He stood the clock back up, where it wobbled for a moment. “I’m sorry; I forgot about the payment.” And a stack of one hundred dollar bills was pressed into Eliyahu’s hand. “Count them,” the man directed, as he grasped the clock again. “So you don’t say later that I deceived you.” And he marched with Binyamin into the hallway and out the front door. Eliyahu stared at the bills in his hand, and then at the dining room door, silent all the while.
“Then there must have been something hidden in the clock that we didn’t know about!” Her voice climbed to a slightly hysterical pitch. “Chani checked it the day before, remember?” “Maybe there was a double wall or something that she didn’t see.” “So why do you think the man insisted on paying us so much? Uh, Mommy, do you want some help?” Elisheva suppressed a smile-cum-yawn. “Baruch Hashem, I’m done with the cooking,” she said. “And the Seder table has been set since last night. Miri came to set it before they left for Yaakov’s parents. So besides for some dishes in the sink, there really isn’t much to do.” “Go rest; I’ll wash the dishes. The kids are all sleeping, right?” “I hope so. They didn’t fall asleep so fast last night. It’s not easy to fall asleep in a new place.” “What about you, Mommy?” “Me?” Elisheva chuckled. “I only got to bed at half past three. Tzippy.” Elisheva headed to her room. Not that she’d be able to sleep, but even a bit of a rest would be good for her. Last night she’d fallen asleep fast — the physical exhaustion from the move had not allowed her the luxury of thinking too much. But the night before that, she hadn’t slept a wink. The $2,500 that had just landed in their lap rustled constantly in her ear, even though the cash wasn’t really there. What was this all about? She had sent Binyamin to a clock store that same afternoon to make some inquiries about cuckoo clocks. He’d come back with a hodgepodge of information, but one thing was clear — and she’d known it all along: This price was baffling for an old, broken cuckoo clock. Elisheva looked at the walls of her bedroom. They were painted a light beige and were a bit blinding in the light of the sun. Something about them suddenly felt stifling, obstructive. What had happened to them these past four months? What were these gifts, landing on their heads like candies at an aufruf? Of course, she had to thank Hashem a million times that these were the kinds of things being showered onto her, but something was really strange about it all. The millionaire was one thing. The penthouse, okay, it happens. But the silver yad? And the payment for the clock? Her pillow was comfortable, and her new linen was beautiful. Eliyahu hadn’t asked her; he’d used the money they had gotten and surprised her with a toaster oven, a new set of linen for their room, and another lovely, high-quality single set of linen for the bed that would be her father’s. “The bed is only coming after Pesach,” he said. “It’s a shame, but in the meantime, he can sleep on the girls’ high riser, and Devorah or Riki can sleep on a mattress.” That was another thing they had bought: a new, comfortable bed for her father, which really wasn’t a luxury, but a necessity; he needed a better bed than the high riser they had bought secondhand seven years earlier. And if you asked Eliyahu, well, the money had been given to them in an honest way, so why not use it? “After yom tov,” he’d told her soothingly a day earlier, “we’ll find out all the things you want to find out. Right now, we thank Hashem for it, and do what we have to do.” “And if it turns out to be a scam?” “A scam? What kind of scam? They’ll say the apartment isn’t ours, after all? So we’ll go back to our
old place. You know we haven’t sold it; we only rented it out for a year. At worst, we’ll have to rent something else for a while.” “And if they claim that the money for Tzippy’s wedding was given to us by mistake, or through some deception?” “We worked with a reputable lawyer, and there’s a signed contract; what are you so worried about?” “And the silver yad?” she’d asked weakly. “Right now, we’re not doing anything with it. It’s safe here with us.” “And the strange story with the cuckoo clock?” “The man came to our house, he checked the clock out, saw exactly what it was, and he made his decision and paid us. What can he say now?” “That it was a mekach ta’us, a sale based on mistaken premises.” Eliyahu must have been tired. “So in such a case, we’ll give him back the money.” “But it’s already spent! How would we pay him back?” “From wherever Hashem will give it to us.” She smiled, discerning his exhaustion. “Fine,” she’d said. But she didn’t feel fine about it at all. Maybe she was too tired. But even if she was exhausted and anxious, she could not deny how happy she was at the same time — her father was coming to her for the first days of yom tov! She so badly wished he would agree to remain for all of Pesach. Even more than that, she hoped he would like it here so much that he’d want to leave the nursing home and move in with them permanently. The children were so thrilled when he came, and Eliyahu also got along with him beautifully. He always had. And it wasn’t only because it’s easy to get along with a rather-silent father-in-law, but because they’d taken a liking to one another from the first minute they’d met. She got up from her bed and walked into the big dining room. Eliyahu was sitting there, at the Seder table, learning with Binyamin. She passed them silently and walked to the back room of the house — her father’s room, checking that everything was in order. The bed was perfectly made, and on the little plastic nightstand stood a bottle of seltzer at room temperature, just the way her father liked it, and a few plastic cups. Everything was ready for his arrival. She could go back to her bed and rest… although she was positive she still would not fall asleep.

Biden Engineers an Astounding Comeback THE PULSE: Joe Biden engineered one of the most
astounding political comebacks in recent political history. After consecutive poor showings in early primary states, Biden appeared to be a weak candidate running a lackluster campaign. However, he turned things around with a commanding victory in South Carolina, which set him on a path for impressive wins in the Super Tuesday contests of March 3. Biden swept the southern states, winning

Alabama, Arkansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. He also surprised the pundits by winning the New England states of Maine and Massachusetts as well as Minnesota. THE IMPACT: Biden’s impressive haul reinvigo-
rated his campaign and reestablished him as the front-runner in the race. What had once appeared to be the unstoppable momentum of Sanders’ campaign came to a screeching halt. Biden’s delegate lead now puts him in a commanding position going forward. On the eve of the March 10 Mini Super
Tuesday contests, Biden had 652 pledged delegates, while Sanders had 575.
Trump Victorious in Republican Primaries THE PULSE: President Donald Trump continued to
score overwhelming victories in the Republican primaries. He is running virtually unopposed, as both Mark Sanford and Joe Welch ended their campaigns early on. Former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld remains in the race and has secured one pledged delegate.
Biden Rides Wave of Endorsements THE PULSE: Joe Biden is riding a wave of endorsements. He is receiving overwhelming backing from the former candidates for the 2020 Democratic nomination. Last week, Biden received endorsements from Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar and Beto O’Rourke. After Biden’s strong performance on Super Tuesday, he received endorsements from Mike Bloomberg, Kamala Harris and Corey Booker. THE IMPACT: These endorsements matter. They are indicative of the fact that the movers and shakers in the Democratic party feel that Biden is the best candidate to take on President Trump in the upcoming presidential election.
THE IMPACT: Trump’s standing among the Repub-
lican base is secure, and he continues to receive overwhelming support from this core group of supporters. To date, Trump has won over seven million primary votes, while Weld and Walsh have received a little over 300,000 combined. Weld’s strongest showings were in New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts, where he won approximately 10% of the Republican vote.

THE PULSE: Bernie Sanders received the backing of controversial civil rights activist and two-time Democratic presidential primary contender Jesse Jackson.
THE PULSE: The results of the March 3 Super Tuesday contests were disappointing for both Senator Elizabeth Warren and Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Both decided to end their campaigns and withdraw from the race. Bloomberg spent over $500 million of his own money on his campaign. He bet his success on a strong Super Tuesday showing. For all his efforts, Mayor Mike was only able to secure a victory in American Samoa. Elizabeth Warren lost the primary in her home state of Massachusetts to Joe Biden. THE IMPACT: Bloomberg’s campaign is a lesson re-
garding the limits of how much political influence money can buy. Warren’s failure is a lesson in how exaggerating or falsifying compelling personal storylines can ultimately backfire. Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard remains in the race. Still, the withdrawal of Bloomberg and Warren essentially sets up a two-way race between Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination.
THE IMPACT: Joe Biden has seen his campaign bol-
stered by overwhelming support from the African American community. Congressional Black Caucus leader Jim Clyburn’s endorsement of Biden propelled him to his convincing win in South Carolina. Sanders is undoubtedly hopeful that Jackson’s endorsement can help peel away some African American support from Biden, but it is unlikely that the endorsement will have much of an impact.
The Politics of COVID-19 THE PULSE: Democrats continue to hammer the
president and the administration over its response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Democrats fault the administration for failure to supply adequate testing kits for those suspected of having the illness. They also accuse the president of providing incorrect information regarding the disease and for downplaying the threat of the virus. Republicans accuse Democrats of induc-

THE IMPACT: Despite the infighting, Congress and the administration agreed on an $8.3 billion emergency spending package to help fight the virus. As the virus continues to spread, there is talk of bailouts for the hardest-hit industries and a possible payroll tax deduction for workers. Should the virus continue to spread, the administration will likely have to enforce quarantine areas and closure of specific industries. Leaders in both parties must focus on helping the country and not on boosting ratings and poll numbers.

the states of Michigan, Mississippi and Missouri have been called for Joe Biden. North Dakota, Idaho, and Washington have not yet announced final results. Michigan is the biggest prize of the night, as it has the biggest delegate total of the six states holding primary contests. THE IMPACT: With his wins, Biden continues to pad his delegate lead. Sanders’ path to the nomination is now highly improbable, if not virtually impossible. Calls will undoubtedly start to grow for Sanders to withdraw and cede the contest to Biden, thereby allowing Biden to focus his energies on the presidential contest against President Trump.

Sheet pan dinners are the ideal quick, easy and mess-free solution. Everything in one pan makes for happy kids and even happier mother. Enjoy these recipes for some stress-free dinners.

MapleGlazed Salmon Hearty and easy! This fish is sophisticated, yet easy to throw together on a whim.
INGREDIENTS 4 salmon fillets 2 sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced Handful of sugar snap peas ¼ cup oil 1 tsp. salt ½ tsp. black pepper
GLAZE ½ cup maple syrup 3 T. brown sugar 1½ T. lemon juice 1 crushed garlic ¼ tsp. paprika powder Dash of black pepper
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 400°. Layer the sweet potato slices and the sugar snap peas on a sheet pan. Drizzle with oil, salt and black pepper, and mix well. Cover and bake for 45 minutes. 2. Uncover the pan and place the salmon fillets over the sweet potatoes. Combine sauce ingredients and pour over salmon, making sure the slices are well coated. 3. Lower the oven to 375°, and bake uncovered for a half-hour.

Pepper Steak Medley Your favorite meal just got easier! Enjoy this delicious dish with minimum fuss and cleanup.
INGREDIENTS 1 lb. pepper steak 1 green pepper, cut into strips 1 yellow pepper, cut into strips 1 red pepper, cut into strips 1 onion, sliced 1 box mushrooms, peeled and sliced ½ pkg. frozen broccoli 3 T. cornstarch 1 tsp. baking powder 1 cup rice 4 cups water
SAUCE 3 T. apricot jam 2 T. honey 3 T. soy sauce 1 T. duck sauce
DIRECTIONS 1. Grease a sheet pan with oil, and add peppers, onion, mushrooms and broccoli to the pan. 2. Combine the cornstarch and baking powder. Dip each piece of pepper steak into the mixture and place over vegetables. Pour the rice evenly over the pan. 3. Pour the sauce over the vegetables, meat and rice. Mix well. Pour the water evenly over the pan. Cover and bake for 2 hours at 375°, mixing once halfway through.

But the truth is that antiques are far more than just trinkets meant to sit around and gather dust. There, hidden in the world of physical objects once loved and perhaps forgotten, lies Antique… Or Just an exquisite beauty. Plain Old? There was life. And legacy. There is art. And heart. Won’t you join me and wade into the wide world of antiques?

We’ve all heard stories of people who discovered that something they’ve had lying around the house was actually worth millions even though it seemed to be just another run-of-the-mill item that had seen better days. So how do we know when something is considered an antique and when something is simply an object that’s past its prime? According to the Federal Trade Commission, an antique is an item that is at least 100 years old. Bear in mind that this 100-year rule operates on a sliding scale, and though your elter-elter-zeidy’s silver becher was made in 1921, it’s still not considered an antique… until next year. Items that are less than the 100 years old are often referred to as “vintage” and may still be valuable, given the right circumstances. But here’s the catch: Even if something is over 100 years old, that doesn’t automatically guarantee that it has value as an antique. There are factors beyond age to take into consideration. If you’re not sure whether your heirloom will benefit or lose from a good cleaning or changes to its design, check with an reputable antiques dealer, or better yet, a restoration specialist. They can give you an idea of the item’s worth and advise you how best to bring it back into service without causing deprecation to the item’s value. to antique Judaica. Admittedly, it’s a niche within a niche.
Keeper of Tashmishei Kedusha “There are currently 700 people on my mailing list from around the world.” Mr. Greenstein tells me. “About 100 are serious collectors, with 60 to 70 of them being very active. When you consider how many Yidden there are, it’s really a minuscule amount; just a drop in the bucket.” The costs of purchasing antiques is a factor that limits many from dabbling in the world of auctions, with the youngest collectors on the J.

Judaica collectors, for who can think of history when the here and now take up so much time and focus? But history begs to not be forgotten, especially when it includes so many beautiful and heilige tashmishei kedusha. Thankfully, Mr. Greenstein is devoted to safekeeping these significant parts of our past. “There are times when a Jewish person has no descendants to leave their Judaica to, and they contact me. One notable story is when a woman named Esther, who’d immigrated years before from Greece, asked me to take over a megillah that had been handed down from her mother. She had no descendants to leave it to, so I bought it from her, and at her request, gave it to my daughter who is also named Esther. I promised her that it would never leave the family.”

So, too, there are other items that Mr. Greenstein holds especially dear that could have met tragedy had they been lost to the wider world of collectors, or worse, turned into scrap metal. One such example is the becher he keeps in his private collection and uses every Friday night. “I make Kiddush with a cup made from coins from a certain chassidishe rebbe.” When I request to see a picture of the becher, Mr. Greenstein politely declines, saying that some things are meant to be kept private. But over in his Cederhurst auction house, so many other wonderful items are publicly displayed, able to be seen and appreciated. From silver Torah crowns, to menorahs, to artwork, the collection spans a broad swath of Jewish history. “What are some of the defining features of different eras and communities?” I ask. The lesson I receive is not disappointing. “If you look at silver objects from Poland in comparison to Italian-made antiques, you’ll see a difference in the luster of the items. The Polish community was poorer, and it was common for their silver to be mixed with a higher percentage of other alloys than richer communities, thereby bringing the cost down. That’s a major difference that I speak of often.” Antiques from Sefardic communities tend to be more elaborate than Ashkenazic designs, with filigree, a delicate method of using twisted silver wire to create complex works of art, being a popular style of eras past. “The construction of the antiques varies according to the era and locale,” Mr. Greenstein continues, “with design always following the style of manufacturing and style of art that was typical of the time and place.” It is fascinating to look through the collection and see the vastly different ways that Jewish communities brought hiddur to the performance of mitzvos. Perhaps even more beautiful is the fact that one man has taken upon himself to preserve these beauties for future generations to enjoy.

He was Ol’ Lonely, who was rarely called upon for repairs, because Maytag’s machines were almost indestructible. Today, is he still so lonely? Maytag appliance owners, you tell us. Even Malka S. who fared best in this informal study, says, “I’m not sure I’m the right person for this survey. My friends tell me I’m awful for the economy.” And it seems she is. While her Hotpoint stove is still in great condition, her two sisters-in-law, who’d purchased the same piece at the same time, have had numerous repairs on theirs and replaced the ignitor at least twice, and Malka cooks for crowds regularly! Indeed, the dramatic change you see in Sarah B.’s timeline happened once she switched over to selfcleaning ovens and used the feature regularly. “In the roughly five years each of my appliances lasted, the wire on the oven ceiling that regulates the thermostat was slowly being damaged during selfcleaning, and I was constantly replacing it at a cost of about $175 a pop. After a few such repairs, it was already worth it to buy a new one. “Why is my current one still in good shape? With my kids married and out of the house, my oven only gets twenty percent of its previous use.” Wanting to hold on to her oven, A.H. says she never uses the self-clean mode or lets her oven work for hours at a time. It’s been fourteen years, and it’s still going strong. However, a look at the chart reveals that her washing machine did not fare as well! There’s even more to it. Today’s appliances are more lightweight with more streamlined, sauve designs. Most people are not ready to install in their homes yesterday’s heavy-duty clunkers, both for their sheer weight and their utilitarian appearance — and noise! We trade durability for aesthetics and convenience. Energy efficiency is another downer as far as longevity is concerned, but it does save us a pretty buck.

Pesach conjures up images of chicken, potatoes and borscht — not cheesecake and milkshakes. But if your family is like mine, preferring blintzes and yogurt over steak any day, it can be a hard call. Especially if the only milchig item we use on Pesach is milk itself, and we have no milchig kitchen paraphernalia to work with either. One year, when I was tired enough of the “ f leishig again?” complaints, I decided to learn what making my own cheese and yogurt would entail. Well, real cheese is a multi-step process, which requires more time and patience than the average balabusta can afford on Pesach. But there are shortcuts I discovered, with surprisingly good results for wholesale call Neiman's Wholesale Distributors considering the effort involved. Equipment Large cheap pot (disposable pot also works) Long-handled slotted spoon
“Shortcut” Cheese
Ingredients
Yields 4 to 5 cups of cheese
1 gallon low-fat (blue) milk Juice of 2 lemons ½ tsp. salt
This method will produce a cheese with a texture similar to ricotta cheese (or a cross between cottage and farmer cheese).
½ cup whole milk
Directions 1. Pour low-fat milk into the pot and cook until almost boiling. Watch milk carefully, as cooking milk expands. Shut the flame as soon as the milk starts to rise, or you’ll soon be crying over spilled milk. 2. Pour lemon juice into milk and stir with a slotted spoon. Milk will separate into cheesy solids and yellowish clear liquid. 3. Allow cheese to cool and settle. 4. When cool enough to handle, pour off liquid, pressing cheese against the side of the pot with the slotted spoon to drain as much as possible. 5. The cheese needs to be rinsed and drained to remove the lemony, tangy taste. To do this, pour enough water over cheese until
it looks like watery cottage cheese. Pour off water and squeeze cheese with the spoon against the side of the pot. 6. Repeat two more times. Cheese should look quite dry, similar to shredded foam chips. 7. Add ½ teaspoon salt and the whole milk. Mix well to incorporate milk into cheese. Taste and add more salt/milk if desired. (Do not use low-fat milk for this step, as it will make the cheese taste rubbery.) The cheese is now ready to be enjoyed as is or used in any recipe. This recipe freezes well, although a better texture will result if it is frozen before adding milk in step 7, and milk is added once it’s defrosted.

Real Homemade Yogurt
Making your own yogurt with commercial yogurt as a starter is quite simple, with pretty consistent results. But when I wanted to make my own starter, I asked a neighbor, who I know cooks everything heimish, for directions. “Just squeeze half a lemon into a liter of boiled and cooled milk, and let it sit until it becomes yogurt,� was her sounds-easy-as-pie answer. Needless to say, I squeezed lots of half lemons into many bottles of milk before I achieved anything close to yogurt (and soon my fridge looked like a yogurt lab with labeled containers of various white concoctions as proof of all my efforts). I hope the following directions will have you enjoying homemade yogurt a lot faster — and with a lot less effort. Making yogurt from scratch is not hard. It just requires patience, as the lemon juice takes more time to culture than with a commercial starter. Directions 1. Measure 6 ounces (¾ cup) milk into a pot and cook until almost boiling (milk will start rising). 2. Pour 4 ounces (½ cup) of the milk into a small plastic container (or cup). 3. Add lemon juice to the remaining 2 ounces of milk in the pot, and continue cooking until milk curdles and separates. Remove from heat. 4. Allow milk in the container to cool until lukewarm. Spoon 1 teaspoon of curdled milk solids (use only solids, not watery liquid) into milk, and mix gently to combine. Cover container, punching holes into cover to allow air in. Air is necessary to help the yogurt develop. 5. Now comes the test to your patience: Let the yogurt culture sit at room temperature until it thickens to yogurt consistency. This may take 2 to 3 days (yes, days). Do not try to rush this process by placing it in a warm place or near heat. I’ve turned several cultures into sour
milk that way. Just wait patiently. 6. After 2 to 3 days, when milk has thickened, cook an additional 8 ounces (1 cup) of milk until almost boiling, and cool to lukewarm. Pour this milk into a container, and stir starter into milk, mixing well. Cover the same way as above, and allow to sit at room temperature again until thickened. This step will take about 8 to 10 hours. Your starter is now ready to be turned into yogurt. 7. Measure 6 cups of milk into a pot, and heat until almost boiling (milk begins to rise). Allow to cool until lukewarm. Add starter to warm milk and mix well. You may add sugar/flavorings at this point if you wish. 8. Cover and allow to sit at room temperature until yogurt thickens. Refrigerate and enjoy! Note: I tried this only with whole milk. Low-fat milk will give you a much looser, thinner yogurt.
If, after all that time and patience, you’re left with a batch of yogurt that hasn’t set properly, the following method can be tried as a remedy before discarding the ill-fated batch.
Greek-Style Yogurt Once yogurt is ready and refrigerated, pour off all accumulated liquid. Fold 6 to 7 sheets of paper towel to fit into a yogurt container. Place folded paper towels over yogurt and cover container. Punch some holes in cover and invert the container onto a plate or into a larger container. Place into the fridge to drain for several hours. Remove wet paper towels and enjoy thick and creamy yogurt.

Stovetop Cheesecake
Nut Crust Yields one 7” crust
Ingredients ¾ cup ground almonds 6 T. potato starch
Equipment 9x13” disposable pans
Containers
7” disposable pan(s)
Plastic fork
6 T. sugar 3 egg yolks Pinch of salt
Directions 1. Mix all ingredients with a fork until well combined.
Cheese Layer
2. Grease a 7’’ disposable pan. Press mixture evenly into the pan.

2 cups homemade cheese
Yields one 7” crust

1. Dissolve potato starch in milk. Combine all ingredients with a fork until smooth.

Cover all with foil, and cook over medium-low heat for 45 minutes. Remove from water. Cool and chill in the refrigerator. This cheesecake keeps fresh for up to a week. Note: Oil may be omitted; cheesecake will be a bit drier without it.

Basic Batter Ingredients 5 eggs

6 T. potato starch 1½ cups whole milk Pinch salt ¼ cup sugar ¼ cup oil (see note)
Directions 1. Beat eggs well with a fork. 2. Dissolve potato starch in milk. Add the eggs along with remaining ingredients and beat well. Allow batter to sit for a half-hour for smoother, softer crepes/ latkes. Note: Adding oil to the batter keeps the crepes from sticking to the pan. If you don’t use oil on Pesach, you may omit the oil, and heat the frying pan to very hot before adding batter to the pan. This will cause crepes to stick to the pan less.
Pancakes Yields 6 large or 15 small pancakes. Use ½ cup potato starch for thicker pancakes.

1. To make crepes, heat frying pan on high heat. When hot, pour some batter into the pan, swirling the pan to cover the bottom with batter. Fry until the edges are brown. Flip and fry for a few seconds longer.

Cheese Latkes Yields about 15 latkes
Ingredients Basic batter 1–1 ½ cups homemade cheese ¼ cup sugar
Directions Add cheese to the basic batter and fry in hot oil.

2 T. chopped onion ½ carrot, peeled and finely shredded ½ small squash, peeled and finely shredded
Directions 1. Beat eggs with cheese and salt. 2. Heat frying pan over high heat. Add oil and onions, and saute for 2 minutes. Add shredded carrot and squash. Continue sauteing for several minutes until very soft. Remove half of the vegetables, and place them in a small bowl or plate. 3. Pour half of the egg mixture over vegetables in the pan, mixing slightly to distribute evenly. Lower flame to medium and cook, covered, until eggs are set. Slide omelet onto a plate and fold in half. 4. Return reserved vegetables to the pan (add 1 tablespoon of oil, if necessary). Pour remaining eggs over vegetables and cook as above.

Progress Report Cabinet Fever With spring’s official arrival this week comes that antsy feeling commonly referred to as spring fever. A variation of cabin fever, it hints at our readiness to get outdoors and greet the sunshine. Let’s embrace the sentiment in reverse and bring the sun’s rays inside by opening windows, welcoming the (relative) warmth, and accomplishing without overworking. This final one is bound to put a sunny smile on all of our faces!
Our progress has been slow but steady, and we’re heading into the kitchen — the central chometz hub. As you get started on the cabinets, it is understandable to feel like you’re getting ahead of yourself. But consider the following two points: 1. Even once a cabinet has already been cleaned for Pesach, the items within can absolutely still be used! After all, I suspect you wash your pots and pans prior to replacing them on the shelves. Still, as we get closer to Pesach, I do recommend that you cook dinners that aren’t technically chometz. Take inventory of your leftover ingredients, and get rid of the chometz items first. Then proceed with cooking proper dinners with rice, potatoes, cornstarch and all other chometz-free, if not kosher l’Pesach, ingredients. 2. The purpose of this cleaning is to ensure that food items aren’t hiding where they aren’t meant to be. To that end, as a year-round recommendation, I advise keeping food limited to just a few cabinets, thus leaving the rest relatively clean.

Start by creating a kitchen checklist enumerating every single cabinet, drawer and shelf in your kitchen. Near each item on the list, assign an approximate time frame — this will make the project seem smaller and more doable. Next, divide the tasks among the days of the coming week. Don’t feel daunted by the (purposefully) long list! By being overly specific, each item will have a short completion time — and you will have many more items to cross off. Crossing items off a list is one of life’s sweeter pleasures. Some more tips: • Prior to starting, clear counters of everything, especially chometz. Working on clear, clean surfaces makes the job go faster. • Be careful not to take out more than you can put back in the time you’ve allotted for the task in order to avoid overloaded kitchen counters. • Work with a timer. Among many other benefits, a timer will keep you focused on the task and push you to work fast to complete it. • Keep in mind that while the cabinets are mostly divided among the first three days, additional time is allocated for some of them on Thursday and Friday.

Due to the laws of gravity and its tendency to send dust and dirt earthbound, it’s always smart to start with the upper cabinets. For today, let’s complete the cabinets that house the least-used items. Of course, that also means reevaluating the value of those pieces, and whether it is worth the real estate it occupies. Even a wonderful gadget or a single-purpose mini appliance might be wasting your space. At the time of purchase, it might have seemed like a good idea, but if it’s only been used once (to see how well it worked — and it didn’t, really), you aren’t benefiting by holding on to it. This might apply to the bread maker, pasta maker, ice cream maker… you get the idea. If you wouldn’t have bothered replacing the item if it would’ve gotten lost, broken or stolen, then do yourself a favor and “lose” it now.

It is worthwhile to mention that there is no need to rewash your dishes at this time — unless you actually find encrusted food on them (which I’m kind of hopeful you won’t). Of course, if you have spare time and want to give your pots an extra shine, I’m not going to object. But how about this? You’ll still be cooking in these pots over the next week or two. Each time you wash one, give it special attention then.
Depending on your kitchen size, you may have more or less work today. Keep going, until you’re done!

Kitchen drawers can always benefit from decluttering, location-conscious placement and proper organization. So after removing all items that aren’t serving a purpose and ascertaining that your drawer contents are where they ought to be for optimal kitchen efficiency, clean the drawer well and find a way to keep that drawer neat. The ideal tool is drawer organizers with neatly labeled, divided sections. Besides enabling you to find what you need easily, which increases kitchen efficiency, these organizers will also maintain order. The dividers needn’t be expensive, and some double-sided tape can keep them from sliding around. The drawer in which you keep silver foil, plastic bags, parchment paper and the like will call upon your Tetris skills, but keep in mind that a snugly fit drawer is a tidy drawer.

For obvious reasons I left food for last, but the recommendation is to plan your menu at the beginning of the week so that the chometz gamur is used early on, thus preventing the need to toss too much. If you choose to, you can still keep one cabinet for the leftover chometz you’ll be using until after Shabbos. Alternatively, you might opt to move it all to a box. The optimal choice is the one that works best for you.

Two or three easy cabinets
With the longer Friday comes the opportunity to accomplish more, and therefore I do recommend that you allocate two or three easy cabinets for today — but not much else. Work with a timer, turn on some music, and put on a pair of comfortable shoes — and a smile! With the right attitude, this work can be downright enjoyable! Now look around the room and pat yourself on the back.

Last week: Bringing their finances under control affects every area of Menachem and Leah’s life… for the better.
After sixteen months... Today is a big day for us. It’s the day we’ve been working toward for the past sixteen months. Today is the day we’ll be making our last payment on our last credit card. Baruch Hashem! Hooray! We are debt-free! We want to shout it from the rooftops, hold the echo in our hearts. We want everyone to know. We made it. We made it! We’re home free, at last. What does it feel like? Like we scaled an impossible mountain. Like we accomplished the incredible. Like our personal Kriyas Yam Suf. Victory is sweet after sweating so hard. The air seems clearer at the top; breathing feels easier. The trek was a challenge, but the view is so worth it. The beginning was harder. We were cutting back on everything, sticking to a very tight budget. And each month it seemed that only such a very small amount was getting shaved off our total debt… But as the weeks went on, and our snowball gained momentum (see Week 2 for the snowball strategy), things got easier. It became almost a game, and we’d challenge ourselves: How else can we save? Where else can we cut? How soon
can we wipe off the next credit card balance? It became so much fun — almost addictive. We used to splurge in honor of our anniversary. Well, on our last anniversary, we had a beautiful dinner at home, and went to the river to watch sunset over the water instead. Then we paid off a $500 debt. Wiped it out. And it’s hard to describe the thrill of paying off that card (it was one before our last!), because it would just seem silly on paper. But, oh, what a thrill it was! I think this may have been our best anniversary yet. All those things we told you about the door-

mat effect? Well, it’s all still true, only there are even more things happening now. We definitely gained more than just our financial freedom. There’s much more structure in our lives, and more responsibility, better communication, a stronger work ethic, financial security and peace of mind. Menachem quit smoking after about six months of budgeting (the amount he was smoking per day was expensive, and it was the only thing left to cut!). He had been trying to quit for a long time, and the financial push was a huge incentive. As of this week, he hasn’t smoked for a full ten months! And financially, if we keep up this momentum, we’ll hopefully be able to buy a house within the next year or two! We’re celebrating with a bottle of bubbly — l’chaim! — and then Menachem wants to invite our coach over for a plastic surgery confetti party to cut up our cards. He was such a big part of our success — we couldn’t have done it without him — and it would mean so much to have him over to share in the joy. We know he’s super proud, and we are too!
Coach’s Take: What’s next? Job well done! You can be so proud of yourselves! You worked hard, stuck to the plan, and kept your eyes on the goal. Now it’s time to enjoy the view! The next step in the process would be to fill your emergency fund. You’ve already got $1,000 in there, and that’s the bare minimum, appropriate while you’re in debt. Now it’s time to save up for three to six months worth of expenses. You don’t want to be in a situation where you have to go back into debt! After that, you’re free to follow your dream and start saving up for a house, as well as plan for simchos and retirement. Good for you!

For the Record Garage sales work to the nation’s advantage, because disposing of waste costs money. Perhaps that’s the reason most garage sales are not taxable in much of the USA. In some states, one must acquire a permit in order to hold a resale event. Some jurisdictions restrict the number of sales a year a person can organize without being subject to sales tax.
It’s official! National Garage Sale Day is celebrated the second weekend of August. Oregon ranks #1 as the state with the most garage sales. In Wyoming, garage sales are least popular, but that may be because it’s the least populous state...
Follow the Trail to Garage Sales… Romage Sales: In the early 1800s, shipping yards began selling unclaimed items or damaged cargo at discounted rates. Rummage Sales: Soon these sales were moved out of the shipyards and over to community centers. In about 1858, the term “rummage sale” was first used in this context. Before long, “yard sales” and “garage sales” were popping up in private yards and garages in residential neighborhoods.

A Yard Sale by Any Other Name A pop-up shop selling secondhand items can also be dubbed: moving sale, tag sale, thrift sale, attic sale and even junk sale and garbage sale. Often held by schools or organizations, the organizers of white elephant sales accept donations of items that are burdensome or have no use to their owners, and then sell these items in a fundraising effort. To avoid the hassle of making a garage sale, people sometimes showcase excess items that may be useful to others in a Free Box. A number of states have implemented such a box or location for the items to be dropped off for display. Unclaimed items are donated to charity after a while.

Private sales are held in garages, yards or driveways, and they’re most common in suburban areas. Joint sales are popular, too, in public locations. When? People organize garage sales in order to declutter, do some spring cleaning, before a move, or to earn some pocket cash. Average profit: Anywhere between $500 and $1,000.
