INSPIRED BY THE BEAUTY (Re: Be My Guest, Issue 234) Your hostess packages were so beautiful. Even though I am not marrying off a child right now, it gave me great inspiration for mishloach manos. It is so helpful to know the exact measurements of the boxes and where I can pick them up. As for the cookie sticks, I couldn’t wait long to try them, and made them the very night the issue came out. They did not disappoint! S.T.

(Re: Be My Guest, Issue 234) We really enjoy The Monsey View, especially your delicious recipes and interesting ideas. Last week’s feature on hostess packages was gorgeous, but for those mechutenistas who took pressure from it, keep in mind that it’s totally extra! If someone can afford it, it’s a beautiful luxury to add to your simcha, but the many out there who can’t swing it timewise or moneywise should know that most guest rooms are stocked with water and whatever guests may need. And let’s be honest: Who really needs those

ORIGINS AND INFLUENCES (Re: FYI Yinglish, Issue 233) Your article on “Yinglish” in Issue 233 was very informative and interesting. What most people don’t know is that not only did many Yiddishisms seep into modern-day spoken English, as you mentioned, but English, too, is a language of Western Germanic origin and closely related to German. You can see this connection in many Yiddish words. Words that have a “gh” in English have a “ch” in Yiddish. Some examples are: light/licht, right/recht, high/hoich, laugh/lach, daughter/tochter, eight/acht. Other similarities would be correct/gerecht, when/ven, is/iz, in/ in, and the list goes on and on. I use this as a response to those who ask a common question: “How can Jews speak Yiddish if it’s so similar to German?” Of course, the standard answer to this is that this is what our bubbes and zeides spoke for hundreds, and likely close to one thousand, of years. Tzaddikim for generations, including the Baal Shem Tov, Vilna Gaon and many other ehrliche Yidden learned Torah in this language and made it holy. And when someone won’t accept this answer, I just tell them that if they have a problem speaking Yiddish because it’s similar to German, then they may as well not speak English, either, because it’s also Germanic in origin! (Re: A Katchke by Any Other Name, Issue 233) First of all, I want to thank you for your great work. Every single week, you produce such a beautiful publication. In regard to last week’s article by Reb Yisroel Bass, I’d like to mention a few points to ponder. I’m sure that people don’t realize what they’re doing to our language, and they don’t have any bad intentions, but authentic Yiddish is slowly and quietly disintegrating. First, for the survival of a language, it needs to be consistently spoken (and by this I don’t only mean the young ones and the men). If women and girls have only a basic grasp of the language, with a vocabulary that hardly exceeds the level of a nine- or ten-year-old, how can we expect this language to be transmitted to our generation? And many of those who do have a grasp of the language don’t even use it in conversation. The second, but equally important, requirement is that the speakers must take pride in their

language. Many of us are proud of Yiddish, but not proud enough. We don’t use authentic Yiddish words like “mantel” for coat, or “herlich” for gorgeous, and so on. These words sometimes seem outdated to our tongues. Maybe the time has come to evaluate our unjustified grudge on our mama lashon? Perhaps it’s time to realize the chashivus of our language and start speaking Yiddish “mit shtultz,” making it a point to add proper Yiddish words to our vocabulary — instead of doing the opposite. Of course, we should keep in mind the reason we speak this language, which is all about keeping our mesorah and remaining separate from the amim around us. To all manhalei hamosdos I would like to suggest: Maybe the time has come to add “Yiddish” as a subject in Yiddish-speaking girls high schools. And before we teach it to our children, we adults first have to reexamine our own attitude toward the Yiddishe shprach. After all, we give English subjects our best. We learn the language in-depth for quite a few hours each week in all schools. Is it a wonder that our girls appreciate the English language much more than a language they hardly learn, hardly read, and hardly converse in? May Hashem help us be zoche to greet Moshiach Tzidkeinu as a proud People, clinging to our own shem, lashon and kedusha. Anonymous

As the wife of a Chaverim member, I wanted to send a public thank you to those who expended so much effort into organizing the annual Chaverim appreciation event that took place a couple of weeks ago. I also want to publicly acknowledge the businesses who so graciously donated exciting gifts to be raffled off and given to the Chaverim members and their families. I was lucky to have won one such a raffle, and I was treated with such dignity when I called to claim my prize. I was made to feel so valued and was told how grateful they are that our community has Chaverim. It seems that there are good feelings all around. Thank you all! A “Behind-the-Scenes” Member

PA RS H A S B E S H A L AC H We are all familiar with the notion of a glass that is filled halfway with water. The typical understanding is that a person who views his cup as being halfempty is a pessimist, while a person who views the cup as being half-full is an optimist. A man once came to the Skulener Rebbe, ztl, and poured out his heart about the many troubles in his life. After detailing his many sufferings, the man added that he is a positive person who sees his cup as half-full. The Skulener Rebbe corrected the man, explaining that, in truth, we have all received a full portion, and it is an error to think that we only have half. No matter how much or how little may be in a person’s cup, his portion is 100% full. Whatever it is that we have been portioned is the right amount for us, but we do not always see it. Perhaps this is because we believe that there is plenty of room in our cup above the line to which it is filled. For example, a man who buys a home might look at a larger home and
assume that the home he bought could have been bigger — that there is more room in his cup and that he did not receive his full portion. In truth, however, his home represents the full portion for him. In this week’s parsha it says, â€œâ€Śv’lo yachlu lishtos mayim miMarah ki marim heim — ‌but they could not drink of the waters of Marah for they were bitterâ€? (Shemos 15:23). The Kotzker Rebbe, ztâ€?l, explains that when the pasuk says, “ki marim heim (for they were bitter),â€? it means that the people were bitter, not the water. A person who is negative will find a reason not to appreciate what he has been given. The people could not drink the water because they themselves were bitter. Even the sweetest water would have tasted bitter to them. After the people complained that they could not drink the water, Moshe Rabbeinu cried to Hashem for help.“Vayoreihu Hashem eitz vayashleich el hamayim vayimteku hamayim sham sam lo chok umishpat‌ — Hashem showed him a piece of wood and he threw it into

the water, and the water became sweet; there He gave them a chok and a mishpat‌ The Midrash notes that the wood that was cast into the waters was itself bitter, yet it caused the waters to be sweet. After the waters were sweetened, Hashem gave them a chok and a mishpat. Rashi explains that Hashem gave the people parshiyos shel Torah to occupy them. The Zichron Aharon, ztl, asks: Why it is that a chok and a mishpat were given to Klal Yisroel in the very same pasuk where the bitter waters were made sweet? He cites the Midrash Kohe-

les Rabbah that “no person leaves this world with even half of his desires fulfilled.” A person who has one wants two; the more one has, the more one wants. A person who always yearns for more will not be able to settle himself down to learn Torah and do mitzvos, for his desires will become an obsession. Klal Yisroel had not been satisfied with their portion, so they perceived the water as bitter. In that condition, they would not be able to pursue learning and mitzvos, so they needed their perspective to be corrected. A person who spends his life chasing his desires only appreciates what he had once he loses it. The Zichron Aharon explains that when Moshe threw the bitter wood into the water, it made the water bitter, which led the people to realize that the water had been sweet before. Thus, the bitter wood “sweetened” the water by making them realize it had not been bitter before. The people learned that they had perceived the water to be bitter because they had not been satisfied with what they had. Hashem had Moshe make the water more bitter after they complained because He wanted the people to develop the middah of histapkus, which they needed in order to be able to learn Torah and do mitzvos. This is why one single pasuk contains both the adding of bitter wood to sweeten the waters as well as Hashem giving out a chok and a mishpat. Once the people developed histapkus, they were then able to pursue learning and mitzvos. May we all strive to develop true histapkus, seeing our cup as completely full no matter how much they contain, and be zoche to pursue a life of Torah and mitzvos.

Police Investigating Burglary at New City Yeshivah It was an unscheduled vacation day for students at ASHAR after school officials cancelled classes on January 31 because of a burglary at the New City yeshivah. Staff arriving at the school, located on New Hempstead Road just east of the Palisades Parkway, found that multiple locked doors had been forced open just before midnight the previous night. With students already en route to the yeshivah, a message was sent out through ASHAR’s internal messaging system notifying parents of the break-in and that their children needed to be picked up because school was cancelled pending a police investigation. No one was in the building when the burglary occurred just before midnight. A statement released by the Clarkstown Police Department categorized the burglary as “a crime of opportunity with no undertones of hate.” Anyone with any information regarding the burglary is asked to call the Clarkstown Police Department at 845639-5800.

A psychiatrist hired by the defense has found Grafton Thomas, the man charged with the Chanukah stabbings in Rabbi Chaim Leibish Rottenberg’s home, mentally incompetent to stand trial. Just days after returning from Poland, where he marked the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Governor Andrew Cuomo called on the state Legislature to approve an additional $25 million in grant money to protect communal institutions against hate crimes. If approved as part of the 2021 state budget, the funding could be used to protect yeshivos, camps, day care centers and other cultural centers, and in an expansion of previous allocations, shuls. Cuomo’s remarks came at the No Hate In Our State security grant conference held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on January 30, which addressed the rising incidence of hate crimes nationwide. “New York is taking strong action, but we can’t do this alone,” said Cuomo in a statement he released. “Fighting this will take all of us together, speaking out in one voice and condemning all forms of hate.” Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, Executive Vice President of Agudath Israel of America, praised Cuomo for his efforts to increase security within the Jewish community. “At a time when Jewish people and Jewish institutions are increasingly the target of violent haters, the friendship of our friends is appreciated all the more,” said Rabbi Zwiebel. “Governor Cuomo has once again proven himself a true friend.” Cuomo had previously announced $45 million in security funding, but some have already expressed concern about a potential timeline of half a year or more for the money to be distributed. “It definitely should not be six months,” said City Councilman Chaim Deutsch. “If they announced it sooner, then we most probably would’ve seen the money for this coming summer season.” Cuomo said that the process is being expedited, but was unable to give a target date for when the funding would be available. To apply for the security grants, go to www.governor.ny.gov/applysecuring-communities-against-hate-crimes-grant-program. Organizations that operate multiple facilities are eligible to submit up to five applications.

tempted murder and both assault and burglary charges. Thomas is also facing ten hate crime charges in federal court, brought after the FBI found anti-Semitic writings in his journal and articles on his cell phone about both Jews and Nazis. Sussman had previously said that his client has no history of antiSemitic behavior or violent acts and had never been convicted of any crimes. Numerous news reports have disputed that statement, saying that Thomas had been arrested at least seven times. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan has until the beginning of next week to respond to Sussman’s statements, which already drew a reaction from Thomas Walsh, Rockland County’s new district attorney. Walsh filed a motion on January 28 calling for Sussman’s removal from the case, saying that by conducting a search and removing evidence from a home where Thomas may have lived, Sussman has become a civilian witness, rendering him unfit to act as his attorney. In an email to The Journal News, Sussman referred to Walsh’s claims as “misguided” and said that he looks forward to responding in writing on February 11 in court.

Recap: Wracked with guilt over the missing envelope, Binyamin regrets doing the all-nighter jobs with Shabsi. He wonders if he should come clean with his parents about it. Devorah Potolsky worries that the new, beautiful house that they’ve won, especially on the heels of Tzippy’s grand wedding, might cause an ayin hara on the family. After extensive “detective work” to try to locate the bachur to whom she’d given the yad, Blumi admits defeat and decides to pay her siblings a large sum of money — more than the yad was worth — to make up for what she’s done. Purim was behind them, and Elisheva and her entire household of three small rooms flew into a frenzy of organizing and packing. The little ones kept competing as to who would get hold of the biggest boxes from the grocery. But Elisheva threw out at least a third of the cartons they brought home, because of all types of unidentifiable crumbs in them. “Mommy wants everything to be clean for Pesach, not just plain clean!” Rikki and Devorah tried to explain to the kids. But their explanations fell on deaf ears. It was a fun activity for the boys: to search for the boxes, ask permission from the proprietors to take them, and then drag them home — just to donate most of them to the storage room in Meir’s friend’s building. Meir’s friend Elchanan was organizing a huge bonfire for Lag Ba’omer, and he’d already started collecting boxes and wooden boards for it. Even Zeidy had already heard about the famous bonfire, and when Meir went to visit him, he rose slowly from his chair and, with the help of a broomstick, slowly nudged a large, folded cardboard box from under the bed.
“This was downstairs in the lobby,” he said to his grandson, who stared wide-eyed in delight. “I asked if I could keep it for you.” “Thank you, Zeidy!” Meir hugged the carton as best he could; his arms hardly went around it. “Mommy, can I go bring this over to Elchanan?” “Wait, not this minute,” Elisheva said. She had just leaned back in her chair and was holding a steaming cup of tea, a bit of a break from the mess at home. It was just two days to Rosh Chodesh Nissan, and they hoped to move next week. Maybe it would have been better to wait until they could close off the unit for her father, instead of renovating while they lived there, but the temptation of moving before Pesach to a new, clean, very large home was overwhelming. And, in any case, her father was not being very clear about his plans. It seemed like he would be happy to come live with them, but every time the subject came up, he kept saying, “We’ll see.” The visit ended up being cut short, after all. It was hard to sit and relax when Meir was cavorting around the fire fodder that his grandfather had given him, and pretty shortly afterward, Elisheva found herself

walking home, with the big carton dragging behind them. “Elisheva!” Sari Goodman, her third-floor neighbor, met her on the corner of the street near their house. “So, is it true that you’re really leaving us bereft here?” “Not bereft.” Elisheva smiled. “Chalilah. We wish you many long and happy years in the building here!” “I thought you’d stay,” Sari remarked in a somewhat-surprised tone. You did? Elisheva thought. Your apartment is almost double the size of mine, and you have five children, and still I’ve heard you, more than once, complain about your “tiny” home. So why do you think that with my large family, bli ayin hara, I should nevertheless stay and live here, even after I was handed this amazing opportunity? “Yes, I really did think you’d stay,” Sari repeated. “I thought you’d sell the apartment; it’s probably worth a fortune. And you have many children to marry off, bli ayin hara.” She tittered. “I’m not sure you’ll find a millionaire who’s begging to fund the weddings of the rest of your kids.” “Obviously.” Elisheva chuckled politely in return, but inside, she didn’t find it at all funny. “But Hakadosh Baruch Hu has lots of ways to help, and we decided that if He sent us this large apartment, and we really do feel that we need the space, then we are moving.” Decided? Not really. The question of whether or not they should move had never really come up; Sari Goodman’s idea hadn’t even entered their minds. Unless it had entered Eliyahu’s mind, and she just didn’t know that? The husband is usually more concerned about how he’ll pay for his children’s weddings, she thought, while the wife is typically more focused on her quality of life in the present… “Eliyahu,” she said as soon as she walked into her home. “Eliyahu?” “Tatty’s still in kollel.” Esty looked at her, baffled. “Oh, right.” Elisheva exhaled loudly and went to change into slippers. She walked into the kitchen to help her older daughters serve supper to the little ones, but the onerous thought did not leave her mind for a second. Were they moving only because of her? Was she being wasteful? The minute Eliyahu walked in — before he even took off his jacket — she dashed over to him. “Eliyahu, did you not want to move?” “Not want to move?” he echoed, his left hand still stuck in the black jacket sleeve. “What are you talking about?” “Do you think it would have been better to stay here and to sell the apartment we won so we could put away
the money for the kids?” “Not at all,” Eliyahu said. He hung up his hat. “Maybe after most of the children are married, b’ezras Hashem, and we won’t need such a big house, we can think of moving on. But right now, there isn’t a single extra room there.” “Right!” she said. She looked around. “And it’s really, really crowded here.” “So why are you even asking this, Elisheva?” “Because… someone I met today thinks that we would be better off doing that.” “So she thinks that,” he scoffed. “Well, we don’t think that way.” “She also mentioned the Australian millionaire.” Elisheva could not calm down. “Eliyahu, I think people are jealous of us. We really had some very noticeable siyata d’Shmaya this year, far beyond the norm.” “Nu?” He walked into the kitchen. “Besides it not being pleasant to have people jealous of me and talk about me, I’m also afraid of ayin hara.” Eliyahu looked at her. “We really should do something about that,” he said. “You know, I’ve also thought about it.” “You did?” “Yes, and I want you to know, the Gemara brings an idea for such a situation.” She took a towel off a chair and sat down. “What does it say?” He left the kitchen and came back a few seconds later with a Gemara in his hand. “Mesechtas Eiruvin,” he said, leafing through the sefer. “It says here: When one holds the assets of a ger, what should he do to ensure that they last? This refers to someone who receives assets without having toiled for them, and this causes people to wonder about it. And Rashi adds that people’s surprise might indeed cause an ayin hara, which would result in the assets not remaining with him.” “Nu?” “The Gemara says what such a person should do: He should take a Sefer Torah with them. Meaning, he should use some of the money to write a Sefer Torah. The reward for that will be that these assets will remain with him.” “Write a Sefer Torah?” Elisheva thought for a moment. “That’s an idea. My father always dreamed of writing a Sefer Torah in memory of the family he knows nothing about.” “And he didn’t.” “No, there was never enough money for it.” “It really is very expensive.” “So how can we do such a thing? We won’t be able to pay for a Sefer Torah from the money we’ll earn by renting out this apartment.”
“You have many children to marry off, bli ayin hara.” Sari tittered. “I’m not sure you’ll find a millionaire who’s begging to fund the weddings of the rest of your kids.”

“I’ve thought about that, too.” He stood up to make a coffee in a paper cup for himself. Those were the only cups not already packed. “We can write a Sephardic Sefer Torah. Ulush Cohen pulled the blanket a bit tighter around the bundle in her arms and waved to Bracha, her roommate. Janek was waiting outside for her, and together they walked down the stairs of the building. He stopped next to a large object at the bottom of the stairs, and looked every which way. “A baby carriage!” Ulush gasped in surprise. “Is this our carriage, Janek?” “For now, yes.” Her husband smiled. “Until we will be asked to give it back.” “It’s such a lovely carriage! There will be lots of room in it for our little doll,” Ulush gushed. She placed her precious bundle into the wooden carriage with the thick, soft, red-colored padding. The metal wheels creaked pleasantly. “Thank you, Janek! Who is it from?” “Mr. Oditcher donated three such carriages to the community va’ad, and I thought it would be more comfortable for you than holding the baby in your arms. You are very weak.” “That’s right,” Ulush whispered. No one knew how little time she had spent sleeping during this hospital stay. She’d spent most of her nights at Gustav’s bed in the pediatric ward. Over the last two days, he had actually smiled to her and even spoken a bit. He recognized her and Janek, who came in the morning. She had told him goodbye and promised to come visit again, as he needed to stay in the hospital until he would be totally well, but — “I’m going up to tell him goodbye one more time,” she said suddenly. “Who?” Janek asked, as though he didn’t understand. “Gustav.” “You’re not going up,” he declared firmly. “Why?” “We’re in a hurry now,” Janek explained, and his eyes flitted to someplace in the distance. “I made up with Shlomku Brein to come and get us on his way back to Senica; we’ll stay there until tomorrow. By then, a room will be available to rent right next door to them.” “Whose room is it?” “Horowitz. They are leaving to Italy.” “Italy?”
“Yes, there’s a ship leaving from there in two weeks.” Her eyes filled with tears. “What happened?” He tensed. “Do you also want to go? We’ll do it very soon, b’ezras Hashem. Don’t worry.” “That’s not what I’m worried about,” she whispered. “So why are you upset? Because we’ll only have one room for now? It’s just a temporary residence, you know…” “I want to see Gustav,” she almost whimpered. “I want to see Gustav.” A few people had told him that new mothers could be overly emotional, and that it was wise to go as easy as possible on them, but on this subject, he could not afford to go easy. “I’m sorry, Ulush,” he whispered, somewhat sternly, and gripped the handle of the carriage that she had let go of. “But you can’t go up to him. You mustn’t go up.” “Why not?” She inhaled deeply. Something in her husband’s voice was too tense, too scary. Too scared. His gaze skittered around and around, and then he finally whispered, “The police were here this morning. In the pediatric ward.” “No…” Her eyes widened. “The police?! Who are they looking for? Gustav?” “It’s impossible to know. They took down the names of all the children and their families there.” “I don’t like it when people make lists like that.” “No one likes it.” Shlomku Brein’s car drove up. “But at the end of the day, these are not the Germans. You don’t have to be so frightened.” “So why are you so afraid?” “Because of our connection to Gustav. We allowed ourselves to be next to him too much, and there’s no way to know what they know about his abduction and what not. It’s possible that it was a random visit, and that it has nothing to do with us. But recently the police has started to keep a very close eye on Jewish organizations, our communities, and the places where we live — and nobody likes it.” “Are you speaking now about all the Jews in general, or specifically about us and Gustav?” “Both. We mustn’t make any contact with him now or be seen with him.” Shlomku got out of the car to help them in, and Ulush wiped her eyes and picked up her baby from the carriage. “Besides,” Janek continued, “we have to start thinking ahead, about where we go from here. If the Soviets are going to lock the gates of this country, like they are doing in other places they control, we have to be on the other side when it happens.”
“No…” Her eyes widened. “The police?! Who are they looking for? Gustav?”

Iowa Democratic Party Bungles Caucus Results
robbed his opponents of the limelight and bounce of victory. Senator Amy Klobuchar took advantage of the chaos by being the first candidate to address her supporters, thereby enabling her to benefit from wall-to-wall prime time coverage without actually winning the vote.
THE PULSE: The first-in-the-nation caucuses ended
in disaster and disappointment as the Iowa Democratic Party was unable to announce the timely results of its caucuses on caucus night. The party announced that the delay was due to the malfunctioning of tech systems and inconsistencies that it found in the vote. THE IMPACT: The delay threatens to undermine the
faith of voters in the accuracy of the tabulation of the Iowa caucuses. A cloud of doubt now hangs over the entire process. The delay likely benefited Joe Biden, as he was not expected to win Iowa, and the delay probably

President Trump Cruises to Victory in Iowa Republican Caucuses THE PULSE: President Donald Trump cruised to vic-
tory in the Iowa Republican caucuses on Monday night. Trump won 97% of the vote, easily defeating his challengers Joe Walsh and Bill Weld. Trump surrogates ran a
strong ground game in Iowa, and their efforts paid dividends. THE IMPACT: In 2016 Trump placed second in Iowa, three points behind Senator Ted Cruz. The 2020 results indicate that Trump has rallied the Republican base and solidified Republican support behind him. His overwhelming victory highlights the strong backing that Trump commands in the Republican party. The dismal performance of both Joe Walsh and Bill Weld puts the future of their campaigns in doubt.
Vote to Call Additional Witnesses Fails to Pass the Senate THE PULSE: The Democratic push to call witnesses and subpoena documents relevant to the impeachment of President Trump failed to pass the Senate. Senators Mitt Romney (R-UT) and Susan Collins (RME) were the only two Republican Senators to break ranks with their party and support the motion to call witnesses. Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Lamar Alexander (R-TN) were both considered possible Republican supporters of the proposal, but they declined to support the call for witnesses. Senator Alexander claimed that witnesses were unnecessary because he believed that the House managers had already proven that Trump’s actions were wrong but that the actions did not rise to the level of impeachable offenses. Senator Murkowski declined to vote in favor of calling additional witnesses, because it would create a 50-50 tie and force Chief Justice John Roberts into the position of having to break a Senate stalemate. THE IMPACT: The failure of the motion to call wit-
nesses virtually ensures that the impeachment trial will come to a quick end and that the Republicancontrolled Senate will acquit President Trump on both articles of impeachment. However, polling has shown that a majority of American voters supported the call for additional witnesses and wanted to hear from the likes of John Bolton and others. It remains to be seen if there will be political fallout from voters who may perceive the failure to call witnesses as a partisan cover-up.
Several Republican Senators Criticize President Trump on Ukraine Dealings THE PULSE: Several Republican senators have pub-
licly stated that they find President Trump’s actions concerning Ukraine to be inappropriate and wrong. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) told NPR news that “I don’t need to hear any more evidence to decide that the president did what he’s charged with doing.” Senator Murkowski (R-AK) on a speech on the Senate floor stated that the president’s “behavior was shameful and wrong.” Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) said that “some of the president’s actions in this case — including asking a foreign country to investigate a potential political opponent and the delay of aid to Ukraine — were wrong and inappropriate.” Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) also seemed to indicate that he found the president’s actions troubling. He wrote: “Just because actions meet a standard of impeachment does not mean it is in the best interest of the country to remove a president from office.” However, other Republican senators are on record stating that they did not find the president’s actions to be wrong and that they believed that the House managers failed to make a convincing case regarding the president’s wrongdoing. THE IMPACT: The senators that have been
critical of the president’s actions have also stated that they will vote to acquit the president on both articles of impeachment. Their statements criticizing his actions are merely an expression of their discomfort with the president’s actions and will likely have little practical impact. It is unlikely that these senators will favor Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) proposal to censure the president. However, their comments will provide Democrats with some political fodder. It will also enable these Republican senators to face their constituents and claim that they were not silent in the face of the president’s actions.

Trump Administration Unveils LongAwaited Middle East Peace Plan THE PULSE: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stood beside President Trump as he unveiled his long-awaited Middle East peace plan. The plan called for a twostate solution with a demilitarized Palestinian state living side by side with Israel peacefully. The deal includes a map that serves as a basis for the borders of both countries. It envisions Israel retaining control of all settlements currently under its control and having its capital in an undivided Jerusalem. Israel also maintains security control of the Jordan Valley. The Palestinian state envisioned in the proposal includes a land link between Gaza and the West Bank and a capital in areas of East Jerusalem. Israel is expected to freeze all expansion of settlements during the implementation of the deal. The deal is considered to be pro-Israel. It was accepted by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who traveled to Washington for the unveiling of the plan. The Palestinian Authority rejected the proposal outright. At a meeting of the Arab League, the foreign ministers of Arab governments criticized the deal. However, some Arab countries expressed optimism that the proposal could serve as a framework for peace between Israel and the Palestinians. THE IMPACT: It is unlikely that the Pales-
tinian Authority will engage in negotiations with Israel and the Trump administration. The Trump administration will attempt to get its allies in the Arab world to support the deal, with the hope that they can pressure the Palestinians to come to the negotiating table. There is a fear that the proposal will cause a deterioration of ties between Israel and Jordan. In order not to inflame tensions, the Trump administrations backtracked on letting Israel annex areas of the West Bank that are slated to remain under its control under this proposal. There is also concern that the Palestinian Authority will cease all security cooperation with Israel and the United States. Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has already threatened to take such action, but it is unclear if he is really committed to carrying out his threats.

Your Failures Are Helping You Live A Healthy Life
The only guarantee we have when trying to lead a healthy life is that we are going to face challenges. Perhaps you think I am the bearer of bad news.
But when you know that challenges are coming and that a challenge is an opportunity for growth, nothing is going to stop you. In fact, everything is going to help you grow and become stronger.
If you would give me a second chance I would love to show you how I am the bearer of good news in disguises.
Don’t try to avoid challenges. Seek them out. Look for the opportunity and become the best version you can become.
Challenges are here to make you - not to break you!
It is one thing to read about this on a relaxing Shabbos afternoon; it is another thing to practice this when the challenges are right up in your face.
The only reason why they feel like they are breaking us is because we don’t understand the role challenges really play in our lives.
If you would like to have a systemized approach to healthy living and have the support team in your corner reach out to me on (845) 671 - 9945
Whenever trying anything new it’s very normal and When expected that we are going to get it wrong in the beginning. Think about a baby trying to walk for its first time. Or anything that you may have tired to do for the first time like ride a bike. You were not very good at it. When we face a challenge it is life - aka, Hashem’s way of showing you where you need to improve. Instead of throwing in the towel and giving up begin to view the challenge as an opportunity for you to grow. The problem arises when we expect things to go smoothly because when the challenge comes it blindsides us and we deflect and assume the worst. There is something wrong with us or that the program is broken. So we give up until the next bit of inspiration comes along and we attempt to try another program.

FRUIT TARTS
Fruit Tarts All of the tarts featured below use the same crust and filling recipes, and are topped differently.
114 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 5, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
CRUST This tart recipe is, hands down, the best one out there, though any tart or pie crust recipe will work just as well. 1¼ cups flour
Pinch of salt
1 large egg
½ cup confectioners’ sugar
1 stick butter or margarine, cut into small cubes
½ tsp. vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS 1.
Process the flour, sugar and salt in a food processor. Add the cubed butter/margarine, and pulse until mixture becomes crumbly, about 15 pulses. Add the egg and extract and keep pulsing until the dough is no longer dry and starts to clump together, about 10 to 15 seconds. (Don’t process to the point where a ball of dough is formed; the dough should be crumbly with large clumps.)
2.
Turn the dough lightly on a floured surface and form into a ball. It should come together easily without being sticky. Flatten to form a thick disc, wrap in cling wrap, and refrigerate for an hour. (You can refrigerate for up to three days in advance, or freeze for a month.)
3.
To roll out the dough, take the dough out of the fridge and let it sit on the counter to soften for easy rolling. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into an 11-inch circle, and then place it into a 9-inch tart pan, preferably with a removable bottom. You can do this by flouring a rolling pin and rolling the dough loosely around it, then unrolling it into the pan. Brush away any excess flour on the surface. With a sharp knife, trim the edges of the pastry to fit the tart pan. Cover pan with plastic wrap and place in the freezer until firm, about 30 minutes. (Frozen dough is less prone to shrinking while baking.)
4.
To bake the crust, preheat oven to 375°, and place rack in the center. Press parchment paper or aluminum foil tightly against the crust, covering the edges to prevent them from burning. Fill with pie weights/dried beans/uncooked rice, making sure they’re fully distributed over the entire surface. Bake crust for 20 minutes, until foil no longer sticks to the dough. Transfer crust to a wire rack, remove weights and foil, and cool completely before filling.
FILLING 1 whip topping
1 carton instant vanilla pudding
1 container vanilla custard
DIRECTIONS 1.
Whip up the whip topping and add instant vanilla pudding. Once fully whipped, add readymade custard; fold it in with a spatula.
2.
Fill the tart and smooth the top with your spatula.
Note: When I want to take the easy way out, I fill the tart with just custard and sometimes custard mixed with some cherry pie filling. It’s absolutely delicious too and less of a hassle. Any of these delicious fillings complement the apples perfectly.

FRUIT TARTS
Tri-Color Apple Topping TO CREATE THE WAVE LOOK, YOU WILL NEED: 3 Granny Smith apples
3 McIntosh apples
3 Red Delicious apples
3 Golden Delicious apples
1.
Slice your apples in half-moon slices, being careful not to cut them too thick or too thin — we’re looking for a happy medium here. (If they’re too thick you won’t be able to shape them, and if they’re too thin they’ll be too flimsy.)
2.
Once the apples are sliced, all you have to do is start placing them in the tart by fanning them out, following the pattern in the picture. I started at one end and made my way to the other end. The apples will stay standing nicely; the filling acts as the base.
3.
For the apples not to brown and stay nice and shiny, prepare a mixture of ¼ cup orange juice, a tablespoon lemon juice and 2 tablespoons brown sugar. Smear with brush over the apples. For a different twist in taste, you can bake the pie: Smear the orange mixture once your pie is all arranged, and bake for 15 to 20 minutes at 350°.
TO CREATE THE OMBRE LOOK, YOU WILL NEED: 2 Red Delicious apples
2 McIntosh apples
2 Granny Smith apples
2 Bartlett pears
2 Golden Delicious apples
Cut the fruits into small cubes. Place them onto the pie following the pattern pictured.
TO CREATE THE PATTERNED LOOK, YOU WILL NEED: 2 Red Delicious apples
2 McIntosh apples
2 Granny Smith apples
Slice your apples into half moons — more to the thicker side for this version. Starting at the top, follow the pattern in the picture until you reach the bottom. You may need to cut up some apples to fill in the empty spaces once you’re done.

avement, traffic, horns blasting: A typical morning at the corner of Route 306 and Maple Avenue. It’s hard to believe that the properties surrounding this intersection were once farmland. In fact, much of Monsey had been farmland until relatively recently. Instead of cars lined up at the light, there might have been cows lined up for milking. Old pasture markers can still be seen in backyards and in the woods in the form of old stone walls.

Urbanization has pushed farms in the United States farther and farther away from the places most people live. As such, city-dwellers have become extremely isolated and alienated from the field, pastures and feedlots that sustain us and give us the strength to grow, heal and learn. Countering this alienation was part of the inspiration behind the establishment of the Yiddishe Farm. Since 2012, thousands of children have participated in our experiential outdoor educational programs. The very notion of an observant Jewish farm is enough to attract visitors, but that’s not all that brings people to the green fields of Goshen, New York. In fact, the first cheder that came to us, V’Yoel Moshe of Kiryas Joel, came specifically so that their nursery children would learn that “potatoes don’t grow in the grocery.” Outside of Eretz Yisroel, agriculture has not exactly been the primary occupation of Jews, let alone frum Yidden. Of course, there were exceptions. In the Carpathian Mountains, for example, there was a robust ag culture extending to its Jewish residents. In Crimea, Ukraine, Argentina, and even Russia, Jews had participated to some degree in agricultural work. The United States itself has a long history of Jewish farming going back over one hundred years, stretching from Utah to Minnesota, and from Vineland, New Jersey, to Ellenville, New York. Goshen was once home to a robust group of Yiddish-speak-
ing cattle dealers who had resettled in the U.S. from Eastern Germany. Today there are admittedly less Jewish farms in the United States. The world is steadily becoming more urbanized (for better and for worse), and Yidden have not been exempt from this movement to the cities. The Yiddishe Farm is one of only a handful of observant Jewish farms in the United States. Farming is a particularly beautiful challenge, especially in chutz l’aretz. On tours I am often asked about daily halachos on the farm and whether we need to worry about shich’chah (no), leket (no), peyah (maybe), orlah (yes) and shemittah (no). While we don’t have shemittah, we did have a “three-day yom tov” to contend with this past year when Shabbos fell right after Shavuos. This led us to devise a creative method for keeping our seedlings hydrated on a timer. On the farm

there is a plethora of halachos that are shayich and there’s a lot to learn. First and foremost is Shabbos and yom tov. It’s no joke; most of what we do on the farm is real melacha, and when Shabbos comes, everything had better be set. Friday is often the busiest day on the farm. There is so much to do to prepare the farm for Shabbos. Think about your house, and multiply it by 227 acres! The chicken’s water jugs need to be filled, the plants watered, the eruv and mikvah checked, the bungalows prepped for Shabbos guests, the irrigation system inspected for leaks, the Shabbos clock battery tested, the grass cut, and the list goes on and on. In 2019 we had over a hundred families visit the farm, many of
them staying for Shabbos! A farm is a gantzkeit, it’s allencompassing. Many people who call our office think that a cow is what makes a farm a farm. A farm, however, is so much more. Yes, the animals are an integral component, but it is also about the cycles between us, the animals, the fields, the larger community, the air and the soil. Because of our unique profession, we end up having a lot of unusual questions for the dayan. Once,

for example, a fox made its way into our chicken coop on Tisha B’Av, as it so happened, and made a real churban. Only several chickens survived, and there was a real question as to whether these surviving chickens might have been injured as well, meaning that their kosher-looking eggs might actually be treif! I remember telling my friends about it at a bar mitzvah, and they laughed, saying, “You are living with halachos that we only learn about in yeshivah.” We are also very careful to keep the laws of orlah. Several years ago, when we were planning an addition to our blueberry field, I specifically requested that the blueberry plants be mailed to me with soil on their roots. Unfortunately, the nursery did not follow our request and sent the plants bare root, meaning that even though they were already three years old, we would have to wait another three years before we could enjoy and sell the fruit. Gam zu l’tovah — it’s a phrase you hear very often on the Yiddishe Farm. In the meantime we have our seven-year-old blueberry patch to enjoy.

We are osek in hilchos Pesach year round, as our most famous product is our line of organic whole-wheat and spelt matzos. The Yiddishe Farm is perhaps the only farm
where the fields are plowed l’shem matzos mitzvah! Before the harvest, Rabbi Yechiel Steinmetz, shlit’’a, comes to inspect the farm. Together, we ensure that the combine is spic and span. We also walk the fields to check that the grain has not sprouted on the stalk, rendering it chometz gamar. The fields also need to be inspected for wild garlic, which, fortunately, we do not have a problem with. Wild garlic produces tall stems that grow balls of tiny garlic cloves on top. These cloves are exactly the same size as wheat kernels, and if they are combined together with wheat, they can contaminate the wheat with a garlicky liquid that would disqualify it for Pesach use. Many of the halachos relevant on chol hamoed specifically deal with fieldwork and irrigation. While the farm is usually closed for Pesach, Chol Hamoed Sukkos is another story. This year was the first year that the hemp harvest fell smack in the
Because of our unique profession, we end up having a lot of unusual questions for the dayan.
middle of Sukkos. During chol hamoed we abstain from most work, and crops are usually harvested just for use during the yom tov, such as going out to the field to dig potatoes to make a kugel. However, if the crop is ripe and the weather threatens to decimate it if the harvest was to be delayed, there is an allowance to avoid devastating losses and com-
plete the harvest during chol hamoed. In addition to these, and plenty more, farm-specific halachos, there is organic certification. The Yiddishe Farm has been certified organic since our founding. For the consumer, organic certification means that you can rest assured that our products contain no harm-
ful pesticides or herbicide residues. Today’s herbicides are so powerful they can even penetrate the skin of fruits and veggies, which means that even washing and peeling will not remove all of the chemicals. For the farmer, organic means more expensive natural input and lots of paperwork and inspections. Each field, piece of equipment and seed must have a paper trail that is submitted to the certifying agency. There are scheduled inspections and random inspections. Sometimes an inspector just knocks on the door and tells me that he is taking a sample of our wheat for testing. If it comes back positive for prohibited chemicals, the field or even the whole farm can lose its organic status for three years. We choose to be certified organic because it’s the only way we can ensure our customers that we are really organic and not just “organic style.” The biggest threat to farming in this part of New York is poor government policy. All around Goshen, more and more upland farms are closing down (or have been shuttered for a long time)

and being sold for development. This mass sell-off can be traced to the dubious slogan of 1970s Department of Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz, who infamously told U.S. farmers to “Get big or get out!” He engineered a farm policy that encouraged farmers to plant as much corn and grain as physically possible, assuring them that surpluses would be sold overseas. Eventually, supply overtook demand, and the ag market crashed, taking with it small producers, many of whom tried to get big by taking on debt to plant more. Those who were left standing consolidated some of the failed farms and tried leveraging their volume to profit in a low-price market. Other farms were simply abandoned and are now being developed for housing. From 1992 to 2012, over 31 million acres of farmland were lost to development! More recently, instead of farms being consolidated as faceless mega farms or sprawling urban development, there has emerged a new model of suburban development that recognizes the huge value that farms have to offer. Most people move out of the city for the fresh air and green, grassy lawns. The train of thinking behind these new developments is that a “neighborhood farm” could provide this preserved beauty to admire as well as serve as an educational and nutritional resource for the surrounding development. New York State itself even has a special program where farmers can sell their land’s development rights to preserve the beauty of their farmland. Perhaps such a model of suburban Jewish community will one day spring up around the Yiddishe Farm in Goshen, NY. Until then we are just a short 40-minute ride from Monsey. See you this summer! ALMONDS The exquisite beauty of almond blooms is the reward of a patient farmer. He whose tree has rested, slumbering for hundreds of hours during the winter months, will see the emergent flowers delicately open, uniformly crowning his tree. After charming visitors to the orchard for two to three weeks, her petals will float to the ground, and in their stead, a small green drupe will appear. Though closely related to the peach, the fuzzy almond drupe is not known for its edible outer flesh. It is the inside that is prized. That inside will appear as the hull of the drupe begins to split, revealing the hard shell of the almond seed within. Finally, the shell will fall or be shaken down by a mechanical tree-shaker, where it will stay resting on the orchard floor until it has dried. Then it will be harvested, processed and sold.

BRAZIL NUTS High above the forest floor, cherished Brazil nut seeds are nourished by the trees they grow upon until they are finally ripe and ready to loosen their hold. Far below their treetop perch, men with broad-brimmed hard hats scurry about, gathering those that have already fallen. The hats offer protection from the plummeting seeds, for the seeds do not fall alone; up to 24 leave the tree as one, encased in a hard coconut-like shell. A blow to the head could prove fatal. The shell is so hard, in fact, that only two beings are known to be able to break it open: humans, with the help of a cutting tool, and a small rodent called the agouti. The agouti is key to the survival of the Brazil nut, for they bury the seeds for later feasting, and inevitably, forget where some are buried, allowing those to take root and blossom into new Brazil nut trees. Brazil nuts are prized for their creamy texture and incredible nutritional benefits. But despite their worldwide popularity, the Brazil nut is a picky creature; it grows only in the Amazon forest under very specific conditions. Those who have tried to cultivate plantations elsewhere have failed. Only the Creator’s command can bring forth a seed.

MACADAMIA NUTS The macadamia tree is slow to mature, usually reaching its fruit-bearing prime after twelve years, and it flourishes in warm-climate regions, such as Australia or Hawaii. Being a delicate tree, it is prone to suffering extensively should a frost set in or a strong wind blow. Its output is considerably less than that of other nut trees, but the macadamia’s sweet, buttery flavor ensures it remains a popular nut, allowing macadamia growers to charge a hefty sum for their product.

CASHEW NUTS While most nuts can be found in the marketplace with their shells intact, the cashew is always sold shelled and at least partially steamed or roasted. This is due to the highly allergenic urushiol oil contained within the cashew’s shell that must be removed through heat to prevent a poison ivy– like reaction. Because consumers don’t typically see cashews in their natural state, it may come as a surprise that the cashew grows connected to a fruit called the cashew apple, which, though edible, is not considered the true fruit of the tree; that’s the title solely reserved for one of the most favored of nuts, the cashew.
The cashew nut grows attached to its accessory fruit, the cashew apple
The largest cashew tree in the world is located in Brazil. It covers around two acres of land, its original roots having branched out multiple times over, spreading farther and farther across the land.
These branches are all from one tree: The Cashew of Pirangi

HAZELNUTS
A hardy nut, the hazelnut grows well in many locales. Hazelnut trees can be found all over America, and due to their ease of care, many plant hazelnut trees in their own gardens and enjoy the bounty of a private nut tree that yields up to 25 pounds of nuts per year. When spoiled with nutrient-rich soil, the tree will dress herself in fancy foliage, but will produce less nuts. For this reason, low-nutrient soil is recommended should a humble, productive tree be desired.

PECANS Known to 16th century Spanish explorers by a name that roughly translates to “wrinkle nut,” the pecan is the darling drupe of the American South. Long gathered by the Algonquin tribe as a favored food source, the pecan steadily gained in popularity as America took form. Thomas Jefferson planted pecan trees, and then shared his bounty with George Washington, who also planted them. The beloved pecan, being a native Southern belle, is afforded great honor as the “state nut” of, not only Texas, but also Alabama and Arkansas. California forces her to share the limelight with the almond, pistachio and walnut, their other three state nuts.

WOODWORK THAT WORKS FOR YOU.
WALNUTS Somewhat of a recluse, the walnut tree does not favor growing close to many other plants. Or rather, many other plants do not favor growing close to the walnut, due its production of juglone, a growth inhibitor that can stunt the development of those nearby. Plants that overlook the walnut’s standoffish nature, and thrive despite the vibes it gives off, enjoy to spread out under its shade and blossom there. Despite its hermitish tendencies, the walnut contributes much to the world. Its wood is used for flooring and furniture, its husks to produce dyes and ink, and its shell is ground to formulate cleaning supplies. And, of course, its oils and nuts are enjoyed as food.

PISTACHIOS
Green and new to the world, these drupes still have a way to go
These laughing lovelies are dubbed “happy nuts” by the Chinese, referencing the large smiles they display when ripe. Perhaps they’re pleased to have found favor with royalty; the Queen of Sheba is said to have outlawed all but the royal court to eat pistachios. Or, perhaps they smile because they’ve weathered the weather and have produced a lovely product in spite of extreme heat and cold. Pistachios bask in the sun, handling temperatures of up to 118 degrees with grace, and chilling when temps dip as low as 14 degrees. Humidity, however, is not their friend. Once the season is over and the pistachio is fully ripe, it gives an abrupt crack and, at that moment, breaks into its signature smile.
The ripening pistachio drupe looks pretty in pink!

The simplest way to cut pineapple into even chunks is to first cut off the top and the bottom. Then cut the pineapple in half and peel well, facedown. Cut the pineapple into four quarters, and then each wedge into two, so that it results in one curved piece and one straight piece. The curved piece gets cut into 4 to 5 chunks. For the straight piece, cut off the inside half — the hard, inedible piece — and cut the remaining half into 4 to 5 chunks.

To make these pomegranate clusters, cut off the top of the pomegranate (where the crown is). Then, using a sharp knife, dig up the pith (white membrane) until you see the arils, and then gently peel away the tops until all the top arils are visible. Now, looking at the pom from the top, you will see that the pith segments it, similar to an orange. Score the outside of the pomegranate along the pith lines, and then gently pull apart each segment, without breaking it, into clusters.
The simplest way to cut melons (honeydew and cantaloupe) into even chunks is to cut it in half, scoop out the seeds, and then peel it while it’s facedown. Then cut 1-inchwide slices, and taking one slice at a time, cut out the inside to smooth the roughness, and then slice it into almost-cubes.

Let’s start with the good news. The Monsey View is excited to welcome you to the most fun pre-Pesach season you’ve ever had! And that sort of leads into, not quite bad news, but an awareness you might have been hoping to avoid: Pesach is inching closer. If you find that bit of information disconcerting, let’s go right back to discussing the fun time we’re promising. It involves contests, rewards — and best of all, a solid plan that will keep you calm and feeling accomplished as you arrive to yom tov without breaking a sweat.

The Eight-Week Countdown On Sunday, February 9, we will be starting our bite-size Pesach cleaning approach. This format is cleverly devised to keep you from ever feeling overwhelmed. After all, Pesach is about freedom and redemption, and we don’t believe that any part of the preparation should demand that you feel enslaved. To that end, this eight-week countdown is structured so that the workload is spread out to give you the time and space for an almost-leisurely approach. On this scenic route, there’s time to declutter, reorganize, give away and replace. With the proper tools (and comfy shoes!), we’ll also be encouraging you along, and you’ll find yourself enjoying the process, without the intense pressure of looming deadlines. On each day of our eight-week countdown, there will be just two short tasks of 30 minutes each. Depending on your state of organization, that much time might not even be necessary, but it’s wise to be prepared. Don’t ever set the timer for more than 15-minute increments, though. Timers are amazing tools in keeping us focused and reducing our workload, but its efficacy is diminished if the timer is set for too long. Each week, we’ll provide you with time- and energy-saving tips and tricks. Do take advantage of them and don’t be a martyr! There’s no need to work harder when it can be easier. Before we continue, here’s a little fact that won’t even surprise you: We don’t know the size of your home or the dynamics of your family, which is why we know that while everyone can benefit from the basic format of this cleaning countdown, each of us have that different area that might not be mentioned here. Wherever that is the case, make sure to pencil it into the calendar on your own.
Week 8 focuses on the master bedroom, the area where you’re least likely to serve food. While breakfast in bed is certainly sweet, it isn’t smart. Avoid bringing food into your room, and making Pesach becomes even easier. In each zone we step into, I’ll be giving you a basic list, but do make sure to write a detailed list for yourself of all possible tasks in each room. Check off the tasks as you go along to be sure that everything got done. (Lists can be saved for next year, too.)
Week 8
Week 7 is when you’ll tackle the children’s bedrooms. Here, too, we will be breaking it down every day, and skipping the closets until week 6. Being that kids’ bedrooms might still have kids walking in with some crumbs, note that we start with interiors first. Even if you find that the area might still require a once-over, the fact that the deep cleaning was already done will make your final freshening that much easier.
Week 7
Week 6
Week 5
Week 4
Week 6 will be focusing on closets, one per day. If you have more than six closets, well — lucky you! Perhaps figure out a way to double up two of the easier ones in one day.
Week 5 is also the week leading up to Purim, so there likely will be other preparations happening this week. Even so, that should not keep you from finishing the laundry room and bathrooms. These areas actually start out chometz-free! Just give it the daily halfhour to reorganize, declutter and deep clean.
Once Purim is over, we start with the second half of the marathon. At this point, the finish line is more or less in sight, and that just means the game is becoming more exciting!
Week 4 will cover the dining room and living room area. We’ll be holding off on table and chairs here, until you’re ready for it.
February 5, 2020 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 171 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Week 3 will have you focus on kitchen cabinets, leaving the pantry for last. Note that the dishes and pots can still easily be used — if you wash them well prior to putting them away (which we’d assume you do anyway!)
Week 3
Week 2 is for kitchen appliances. We’ll break it down for you, even as we recommend that you are careful not to break them down literally. Appliances don’t need to be taken apart to the point where you need an electrician to put them back together. At the end of this week you can, in theory, kasher.
Week 2
Week 1 is when we give you the opportunity to cook and prepare for yom tov. We will still mention the patio and carriages, and remind you about the kittel and vacuum cleaner bag, but for the most part, we give you free reign. At this point you will have done it — and with a smile on your face!
Stay in beat with The Monsey View for great rewards! Each week, participants who follow along the tasks of that week will enter a raffle for awesome prizes and gift certificates at your favorite local destinations! Readers who participate in the entire program will also be treated to sweet rewards upon its completion.
Here’s how to participate: 1. Roll up your sleeves and join the fun, doing each task on the designated day. 2. Once you have completed all tasks, call The Monsey View on Sunday between 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. only. 845-600-8484, ext. 803 3. Leave a clear, short voicemail, stating that you have completed the tasks for the week. Include your name and phone number. 4. Stay tuned for the lucky winners announced the following week! 5. When the program will wrap up, there will be a form for participants who’ve completed the entire program that they can fill in to earn sweet, free rewards. Stay tuned! All information must be included audibly and clearly in the voicemail for a participant to be entered into the raffle. This week’s prize:

Bite-Size
PESACH CLEANING
There are many reasons why the master bedroom is our starting point for the eight-week countdown, but logistics aside, I’m just going to mention my favorite one: It’s yours. As the homemaker, your position puts you at the heart of your operation — and this goes beyond the manual upkeep of your home. As its core, homemaking is about the homemaker herself. If your space is organized, it will declutter your mind so you can tackle the rest of your home. As we start diving into the Pesach workload, let’s first ensure that your domain is conducive to relaxation and reinvigoration.
This Week: Look at the list below, and note how we’ve broken down the tasks into little parts. Each task is a small, manageable job. Work with a timer, and you’ll have a personal cheerleading squad at your side, encouraging you to stay focused, proceed quickly and get done with time to spare.

COUNTING DOWN...
WEEK 8 — YOUR SANCTUARY
Decluttering is a rather lengthy subject, but here’s the quick three-step crash course:
1.
Anything you don’t love, use or need is clutter. Don’t hold on to things just because you already own them.
2.
If it’s not something you enjoy — get rid of it!
3.
Even items that are neatly organized in pretty boxes are clutter if they aren’t serving a valuable purpose.
With our two tools — our clutter awareness and trusty timer — in hand, let’s tackle the night table and armoire: Remove everything, wipe over, and then replace only what you truly need.
Monday
The focus today is on your dresser drawers. It is important to note that there is absolutely no waste in disposing of that which isn’t bringing you joy. If the item has already served its purpose, then it wasn’t a waste, and if the item has no purpose, by choosing to hold on to it, you’re only compounding the waste — by wasting your space. February 10
There’s absolutely no reason to feel guilty throwing out (or giving away) something you don’t need.
Tuesday February 11
Today is the day for beds, linens and bed frames.
• Mattresses tend to be a hotbed for mold spores. Sprinkle a mix of baking soda with a pleasant-scented essential oil on the mattress and let it sit for a bit — then vacuum it clean. Flip the mattress, and do the same for the other side. •
Once a year it’s a good idea to flip your mattresses. After all, you don’t want one side to be more weighed down than the other. An easy way to remember to do this annually is to keep it in mind during the prePesach cleaning, before replacing the mattress on the freshly cleaned bed frame. Remember to ask for assistance with such heavy lifting. Don’t try proving that you’re strong. Just prove that you’re smart!
For those of us living in tighter quarters, using the area under the bed for storage makes a lot of sense, but it also makes cleaning more difficult. As you wash up the area, reconsider what you keep down there, and decide whether it’s something you love, use or need. If you wish to keep the items, try storing them in one large closed container. This keeps dust out and makes cleaning under the bed a simpler process.
Wednesday
Today is the day to catch up on the insides of the furniture and any drawers you may have missed. Follow that with polishing the furniture exterior. February 12
Do you have central heating or cooling? Those vents are dust magnets! Here’s a solution that will practically eliminate the dust entirely! After washing it clean, wax the vents with car wax! The metal will remain dust-free.
Thursday
Today we’ll focus on the washup of walls, doors, door frames and woodworks. February 13
I know that wall-washing is not a halachic requirement, but why not have freshened walls anyway? Now’s the perfect season for it, too. So here’s a quick and easy way to do it: Use the Miracle mop. Place a clean, damp, mildly soapy cloth along the bottom, and you will find that an aching back isn’t a requisite for clean walls!
To remove the all-too-common yellow staining from pillows and comforters, do not use bleach, which will not only not remove the yellow stains, but likely darken them. Instead, wash the pillows with the recipe below. Make sure to dissolve the ingredients in the hottest temperature possible, and to run the cycle on “hot.” Make sure to dry the pillow and comforter entirely, because the moistness can too easily breed bacteria. To ensure a thoroughly dry pillow or down comforter, toss some clean tennis balls into the dryer. They’ll loosen clumps and help the process go faster. If the weather and space permit it, air out the pillow and comforter in the sunlight.
Whitening Recipe 1 cup dishwasher detergent (like Cascade) ¾ cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda ½ cup distilled white vinegar 3 T. laundry detergent 3 cups HOT water
Friday
Let’s finalize our time in this zone with a thorough washup of windows, sills, shades, curtains, light fixtures and lamps. February 14
Sunday February 16
Place dissolved detergent in washing machine, and launder pillows and comforters on the hottest setting.

Life at a Glance MENACHEM, age 24: juggles three jobs LEAH, age 23: runs her own business sewing custom gowns and dresses ARON, age 3.5 MIRIAM, 18 months Both kids are in daycare. In the past year, Leah has had to cut down on work because Miriam has been sick a lot. Real numbers and real facts. Identifying details have been changed to protect privacy.
Recap: Menachem and Leah finally feel calm enough to discuss the bigger picture: why they want to get out of debt, what money means to them, and their financial dreams. They create a wish list for any unexpected money that would come in each month.
Menachem: When we were talking to our family and friends about our new resolution to live within our means (right now we’re broke) and pay off our cards, we got a lot of questions about why we decided to pay our debt instead of settling on it. When you settle your debt, you put aside money every month instead of paying the minimum payments. Eventually, the credit card company takes notice and starts calling you for the money. At that point, you tell them you can’t afford to pay, but offer to make a payment (usually about half of what you owe) in one lump sum if they write off the rest of the debt. Coach’s Take Here’s our thought process about why we didn’t want to go this route: Some people unexpectedly find themselves in a seri1. We felt it was morally wrong for ous money trap, and for them, paying off the entire debt us to not pay back what we bormight not even be an option. If that’s the case, and they rowed to live on. It sounded too can’t even meet the minimum payments, then settling on close to stealing. 2. We just couldn’t handle even one the debt could be the only way to go. In Menachem and more collection call; the stress Leah’s case, I fully agree with them and I am proud of their was really getting to us. When decision to own up to what they borrowed. Especially with you settle debt in the way dethe root cause of their debt (Menachem’s lack of income) scribed above, constant collecnow fixed, they should be able to pay it off fairly quickly. tion calls are par for the course. 3. We didn’t want to ruin our credit

scores, because we dreamed of buying a house within the next few years. Settling on your debt ruins your credit score for about seven years. 4. We both knew that we really needed to get our financial act together and that our money habits needed to change. My wife felt like if we work really hard on paying this off, then we wouldn’t fall into the same pit again, and I must say I agreed with her. As of now, we are committed to sticking to this decision and riding it out. I won’t lie — I know it’s a huge commitment and that it will be really, really hard. It’s big. It’s challenging. But I think we can make it through. And I feel that if we can get through this, we can get through anything.
Original debt

AMOUNT PAID (THIS WEEK $0)
AMOUNT LEFT (THIS WEEK $32,242)
Leah: Menachem and I have taken to calling our credit card debt “student loans,” joking that this is our lesson to never again be so financially obtuse. We’re definitely learning a ton about money: how it works, how to make it, how to use it, and how to budget so we can tell it where to go before we wonder where it went. We’re learning about saving and trying to fill up our initial $1,000 emergency fund quickly, and Menachem even started reading different books about investing money. We’re following the advice of our coach and not investing while we’re still in debt, but we want to have the knowledge we need as soon as we’ll be in the clear, so that we can set up our retirement funds and start making our money work for us.
The one big thing we did this week was negotiate our interest rates. We called up the companies of
each and every credit card we owned and managed to get our interest down really low! They had to close our cards, so we can’t put new charges on, but we were planning to do that anyway, so no loss there. I know many of our friends think we’re weird for paying off our loans instead of settling, but I know deep down that this is the right thing for us to do. I can feel the stirrings of something new; something good is happening. I can feel something positive coming. There’s a lot we stand to gain from this.

Coach’s Take Credit card companies are often very accommodating when you call them to negotiate a lower interest rate, especially when you tell them you’re having trouble paying and don’t want to have to settle on the debt. It’s worth it for them to avoid the hassle of selling your debt to collectors for pennies on the dollar, so they’ll often cut their losses and charge a smaller amount of interest. This way, they’re still making money off your debt, and they know you’re more likely to continue paying them.
Before you negotiate with credit card companies, make sure to cash out all of your credit card points and put them toward the debt. Once they close your account, you’ll still owe the balance but might not be able to get the points out.
Coach’s Take Part of taking responsibility for your own financial life is stopping to care about what people think of you. They’re not the ones paying your bills; you are. You and your spouse are the only ones who should be calling the shots in your own life.
To be continued...
Meet the Coach Eli Shimon
Eli learned financial responsibility the hard way, after he found himself owing over $30,000 in credit card debt. He turned to coaching on financial advice, made a plan, stuck to it, and paid it all off in 16 months. Having personally experienced the pain, terror and despair of crushing debt, Eli is super-passionate about educating the community. He certified as a financial coach and is committed to helping his clients get to a place of financial and personal freedom.

The Makings of an Orchard Five fruit-producing trees are the minimum number of saplings needed for a planted area to qualify as an orchard. An orchardist is the title for an expert who cultivates and cares for an orchard. Orchardists are often simply referred to as “farmers.” A group of trees that produces citrus fruits is commonly referred to as a “grove.” Orchards can take a decade or two to grow and are expected to yield produce for at least a generation.

U.S. Orchard Facts Washington is the state with the largest apple production. It boasts some 170,000 acres of orchards. Applecrest Orchards, New Hampshire, is the oldest continuously producing apple orchard in the USA, yielding fruits since 1665. Florida is the state most renowned for its oranges. It claims 70% of national production. More than 20,000 acres of vineyard dot the California wine regions, including Modesto, California, allegedly the home of the largest winery in the world. Hawaii claims the title “largest banana producers of the U.S.” Still, most of the bananas we eat come from Guatemala, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Honduras. California is the foremost fruit-producing state, followed by Iowa, Texas, Nebraska and Illinois.

Crop or Flop? KEY FACTORS FOR ORCHARD GROWTH:
Soil management Irrigation Tree canopy Nutrition
KEY AREAS OF RISK TO PRODUCTION:
Pests and diseases Poor farming practices Unpredictable weather conditions Climatic factors, such as drought, frost, hail, wind and heat
Current Crop Issues Across the USA Peaches need a consistent stretch of cold weather — known as “chill hours” — followed by warm weather. Without enough chill hours, the trees produce weak buds, and ultimately, weak fruit. An especially warm winter in 2017 destroyed nearly 85% of Georgia’s $30 million peach crop.
PEACHES –
APPLES – Apples suffer from sunburn — which presents as blemishes on their skin — when temperatures get too hot. The (expensive) solution is installing large nets above the orchards to reduce the sunlight’s intensity.
Growers in Texas were delighted at the prospect of farming lucrative Golden Kiwi fruits. Conditions seemed perfect for such subtropical fruit. The first kiwi crop was harvested in 2014, and the yield expanded each year. However, they have since been dismayed by unpredictable freezes that destroyed the crop.
KIWIS –
Famous Global Crop Failures The Irish Potato Famine marks one of the most famous crop failures in history. In the 1800s, the Irish were so enthusiastic about potatoes that it was practically all they planted and all they ate. But in 1845, fungal blight destroyed both the leaves and the edible roots of the potato plant, leaving the country with no food to eat! At least 1 million people died of hunger before the famine ended in 1852. --------------------------------------------------The Persian Famine of 1870 to 1872 was caused by two consecutive years of no rainfall. The severe drought took over 1.5 million lives. --------------------------------------------------“It was like a great white cloud, like a snowstorm, blocking out the sun,” one farmer reported. That was the effect of swarms of locusts swooping down upon farmland across the Great Plains — Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska — between 1873 and 1877. It caused $200 million of crop damage. --------------------------------------------------Ethiopia’s history is laden with famines. Insects, drought and military policies are the three leading causes. Most prominent is the 1984 to 1985 famine that killed more than 1 million people. Until today, approximately 80% of the Ethiopian population are poor farmers who live from harvest to harvest, leaving them vulnerable to crop failures.
SOUR CHERRIES – This delicate crop needs a long, cold winter and a slow, cool spring. When warmer temperatures arrive early in the season, or if the trees bud and bloom before the threat of a late freeze is over, the cherries suffer. Equally as disruptive is the Drosophila, a fruit fly, which winged its way into the sour cherry orchards in 2010. Ever since, the flies continue to lay eggs in the fruit, ruining the cherries. RASPBERRIES – If there isn’t enough rainfall or if the fields are flooded with water from excess rain, the berries suffer. Lately, unusual weather patterns affected raspberries very directly. Whereas in the past a crop would go bad once every 10 to 20 years, more recently, farmers have been losing their entire crop once every 3 to 4 years! ALMONDS – In the super-cool spring season of 2018, an abundance of rain led to a steeply decreased almond harvest.

This coming Monday is Tu B’Shvat and a lot of people will be eating dried fruit this weekend. Many people may be wondering, what are the benefits of buying organic dried fruit over conventional? Are there any health benefits? Here, we explore the differences between organic and non-organic dried fruit and answer some of your questions. Why is organic dried fruit so much healthier than non-organic dried fruit?
If someone has allergies should they be worried about eating dried fruit?
Some manufacturers of dried fruit use sulfur dioxide as an antioxidant to counteract oxidation that darkens the fruit and alters its flavor. However, sulfur dioxide is an unsafe additive for many sensitive individuals, in particular the 1 percent of the population who have sulfa allergies and the additional 5 percent that suffers from asthma. Some dried fruit can also contain other unwanted additives such as added sugars, industrial oils, and food colorings. To ensure that you only eat the highest quality sulfite-free dried fruit, it is best to choose Certified Organic varieties.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies sulfites as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). But a small number of people are very sensitive to sulfiting agents. For those who are sensitive or hypersensitive to sulfites, eating even a tiny amount of sulfur dioxide can trigger symptoms that range from uncomfortable to dangerous. When exposed to sulfites, sensitive individuals have been known to suffer a wide range of symptoms including itching, flushing, hives, facial swelling, low blood pressure, gastrointestinal pain, diarrhea, wheezing, asthma attacks, and, in the most rare and worst cases, life-threatening anaphylaxis. Symptoms of sulfite sensitivity usually begin within half an hour after eating food that contains sulfur dioxide. People with allergies should avoid conventional dried fruit and choose Organic dried fruit instead to be certain to avoid all sultites.
What are sulfites and does dried fruit contain sulfites? Sulfites, also known as sulfiting agents, are inorganic salts that are commonly used as preservatives by food and beverage producers. Sulfur dioxide is a compound that many dried fruit sellers add to their products to delay spoiling and to prevent them from turning brown on the shelf. The FDA requires that food manufacturers must list sulfites on the label as an ingredient if their product contains more than 10 parts per million. Most dried fruit will list sulfites, or sulfur dioxide as an ingredient. It’s still important to remember that even products that don’t list sulfites on the label may still contain sulfites.
Is sulfur in dried fruit bad for you? While the U.S. National Library of Medicine does not consider sulfur dioxide to be harmful for healthy people to consume in small amounts, according to Food Matters, the acceptable daily intake for a 10-year-old weighing 21kg (roughly 46 lbs) is just 15mg of sulphite per day; that’s the equivalent of one dried apricot. Sulfur dioxide exposure can be very harmful, even deadly to asthma sufferers and those with sulfite allergies or sensitivities, and is a toxic and dangerous chemical to both our bodies and the environment.
Why are some organic dried fruit dark and sometimes brown? In order to prevent dried fruit, or vegetables like sun-dried tomatoes, from spoilage and preserve that just picked vibrant color, manufacturers treat them with sulfites. Organic brands of dried fruits do not contain sulfur dioxide and therefore will have the naturally occurring fruit color that will turn dark and brown. While organic dried fruits won’t last as long as conventional dried fruits because they don’t contain the preservative, you can freeze them so that they last longer.
Which dried fruit are considered to be the lowest in sugar? Some fruits are naturally bitter, so when dried, a sweetener may be added to balance the flavor. Unfortunately, some brands add high fructose corn syrup, refined sugar, or even artificial sweeteners. Dried apricots are a good choice when you want a low sugar content and they provide plenty of antioxidants vital in protecting cells from free radicals. They are an excellent source of vitamins C, A, and E, potassium, and fiber, and are easy to be digested because of its lower fructose. Dried prunes are also rich in vitamin C and soluble fiber- just 2 pieces of serving per day can help make you regular that’s how potent it is. It’s great for snacking because it’ll keep you full for a longer period. They are fairly low in sugar and is a good source of iron and potassium. Raisins, dried mulberries, and dried black mission figs are also very good options. Dried peaches and apples are also a good choice.
Does one have to wash dried fruit before eating it? You should be washing nuts, seeds, and dried fruit before eating unless the packaging states that they are ready to eat. This is especially true if you have purchased them loose. This kind of food is considered to be one of the dirtiest. This is especially true for fruit that is sold by weight. Even if the nuts and seeds have been peeled, you just don't know what could have happened during storage or transportation. So there you have it. Always read the labels, and choose organic over non-organic dried fruit, especially if you have a sulfite sensitivity. Enjoy your dried fruit haul, and Happy Tu B’Shvat!
FRUIT LIST UPDATED ט"ו בשבט תש"פ
The information in this list has been excerpted and translated with permission from the 5780 Yiddish Tu B’shvat fruit guide of New Square Kashrus Council.
This list is regarding insect infestation only. Concerns of coatings of various fruits (which may be made from non-kosher fats or shellac) are not addressed on this list. In addition, one should also be careful to eat fruits which grew in Eretz Yisroel only with a reliable hechscher, in order to avoid shailos of orlah, terumos, maasros and shmitah. The following guidelines are applicable all year round.
ALMONDS
See “Nuts”. Any almond with a round drill-like hole should be discarded. (These holes are sometimes very small.) Coated almonds (honey/sugar glazed or chocolate covered) can’t be checked for holes, and should be used only with good hashgacha.
APRICOTS
Fresh: Fresh apricots are generally free of infestation. If the fruit is cracked or split, it is advisable to check the inner part of the fruit. Dried: Dried apricots grown in California are usually less infested; however, a few pieces from each batch should be inspected on the inside to confirm that there are no worms or white/brown dots (mites). Dried apricots from Turkey have been found to be infested and therefore each one should be inspected.
AVOCADOS
Avocados are generally free of infestation. There are often scales on the peel.
BLACKBERRIES Blackberries are heavily infested and should not be used. BLUEBERRIES
Blueberries (fresh & frozen) have been found to have a high rate of infestation (including insects that will not come off with washing, e.g. scales) and should not be used.
CAROB
Carob is known to be very infested. It may be used only in the following manner: The carob should be washed and cut in its width into small pieces (about ¼ inch each). The pieces should then be inspected thoroughly from all angles, for any worms or crumb-like particles. A practical tip to make the carob easier to cut, is to soak it in hot water for a few minutes to soften it.
CASHEWS
Cashews may be infested; therefore, only good-quality cashews should be used. One should make sure that there is no webbing between the cashews, and inspect a few cashews from each batch by splitting them in half and examining them for worms. מדקדקים בכשרותare מהדרto check each cashew.
CHERRIES
Grade A cherries grown in the USA are generally clean and don’t require checking. However, it's strongly recommended to open a few cherries and examine them around the pit. If those selected for inspection are found to be clean, the rest of the batch may be used. If, however, worms are found in any of those few cherries, the rest must be cut open and inspected. European cherries (sold canned) are prone to infestation and should only be used with good hashgacha.
CHESTNUTS
Raw chestnuts may be infested at the beginning of the season. One must remove both the (hard) outer and (soft) inner peel, and then cut the remaining chestnut into small pieces. The fruit should then be inspected thoroughly for worms or grey “crumbs” which is waste matter from insects.
CITRUS PEEL
Fresh or dried citrus-fruit peels should not be eaten at all, since they may have tiny dark scales (a type of insect) on them.
CRAISINS
Craisins are free of infestation, and should only be used with a good hashgacha.
CRANBERRIES
Fresh and frozen cranberries are free of infestation.
DATES
Fresh: Fresh dates (that are sold on a twig) are generally not infested. It is advisable to make sure that there are no holes on the outside of the date. Dried: USA grown Medjool dates are generally less infested than other dates (Deglet Noor, etc.). Each date should be cut open lengthwise, and inspected carefully around the pit. If one sees worms, beetles, or any signs of infestation (such as brown crumb-like particles), that date should not be used. (The small white particles are sugar crystals, and are not a sign of infestation). The dates should then be held up against a light (or placed on a light box) for a more effective inspection for worms, and to make sure that there are no small dark beetles inside the flesh. If a dark spot is detected in the flesh, inspect to see if it’s just discoloration, or if there is an insect inside. Dates from Tunisia and Pakistan have a high infestation rate of scales. It is advisable not to use them at all. Dates from Eretz Yisroel may sometimes have scales on the outer peel. It is advisable to check each date for scales.
DRIED FRUIT
One should be careful to use only fresh, high-quality dried fruits, preferably those produced in the USA. It is recommended to inspect them for insects before eating. There may be additional kashrus issues regarding dried fruit (flavors, coloring, oils, non-kosher כליםduring the drying process), therefore, one should use with a reliable hashgacha.
FIGS
Fresh: Only high-quality fresh figs should be used. If the indentation on the bottom of the fig is “wide open”, the fruit should be discarded. If the indentation has only a small natural hole, one should trim it off and cut the fruit in half. Each half should be inverted, (to resemble a yarmulke), and thoroughly inspected. If any worms (maggots) or black specks are seen, the fruit should be discarded. The worms may be very similar to the color of the fig. Some experience identifying these insects is necessary for this inspection to be effective. Dried: Dried figs are highly infested and the process of inspection is very difficult. Only someone who has experience checking figs should attempt such an inspection. One who is not an expert may eat dried figs only in the following manner: Scrape out and discard ALL inner seeds. Cut out the hole at the bottom of the fig. Wash the remainder of the fig (the skin) on both sides with water while rubbing it to remove any residue.
ESROGIM
Esrogim that are sold loose in stores as a fruit or for decoration, may have scales and should be peeled prior to cooking. Those that are sold for arba minim may be coated with shellac.
GOJI BERRIES
Dried goji berries from various places of origin have been found to be very infested, and should not be used.

GOOSEBERRIES Remove the outer leaves, and rinse the fruit well. GRAPEFRUIT
Grapefruit is generally free of infestation. | Peel: See "Citrus Peel"
GRAPES
Grapes sold commercially in the USA do not have inside infestation, but there are often insects on the outer surface. Each grape should be removed from the cluster, and the entire surface of each individual grape should then be thoroughly rubbed while being held under a strong stream of water. (Rubbing dislodges the insects from the grape skins). When producing “must” (grape juice) or homemade wine, one should strain the finished product through a tightly woven cloth, such as shirt fabric.
GUAVA
Fresh: Fresh guava may be infested. One should cut the fruit into thin slices and examine each one. Dried: Dried guava discs (thin round slices) may be produced from inferior quality fruit that are heavily infested. One should inquire of the Baal Hamachshir regarding the status of that particular product.
KIWIS
Kiwis are generally free of infestation. The peel may have scales, and therefore should be removed before eating.
KUMQUATS
Kumquats should only be eaten after they are peeled, due to the scale insects which may be found on the peels.
LEMONS
Lemon is generally free of infestation. | Peel: See "Citrus Peel"
MANGOS
Mangos are generally free of infestation. Occasionally there may be scales on the peel.
NECTARINES
Fresh nectarines are generally free of infestation. If the fruit is cracked or split, it is advisable to open it and check the inner part of the fruit.
NUTS
Raw nuts and nuts that are roasted without oil should preferably be purchased with a hashgacha, especially if they are marked “allergen for dairy” since they may have been packed on dairy keilim that were used for חלב עכו"ם. Roasted nuts with oil need a reliable hashgacha. It is worthwhile to check all nuts for webbing or other signs of infestation.
ORANGES
Oranges are generally free of infestation. | Peel: See "Citrus Peel"
PEACHES
Fresh peaches are generally free of infestation. If the fruit is cracked or split, it is advisable to open it and check the inner part of the fruit.
PEANUTS
American grown in-shell peanuts are generally free of infestation. It is advisable to inspect them when cracking them open.
PERSIMMONS
The leaf should be removed, and the fruit washed well. If the fruit is very soft, it should be inspected inside. If there is a dark spot on the peel, remove the peel in that area and check for inside infestation. Small black dots on the peel or inside the fruit are not a sign of infestation.
PINEAPPLES
When peeling pineapples, care should be taken to remove all brown portions that remain from the peel. The pineapple should then be rinsed, as well as the knife and any surfaces that were used for peeling. In order to use the green leaves of the pineapple for decoration, each individual leaf must first be removed from the crown and soaked in soapy water for 5 minutes, then each leaf should be rubbed thoroughly under running water. Juice: Pineapple juice is usually squeezed from the peel of the pineapple which is infested; one should ask the rav hamachshir how they handle the infestation issue.
PISTACHIOS
On rare occasions, infestation can occur in pistachios. It is preferable to check a few pistachios from each batch before eating.
PLUMS
Fresh: Fresh plums are generally free of infestation. If the fruit is cracked or split, it is advisable to open it and check the inner part of the fruit. Dried: Dried plums are generally free of infestation; it is still advisable to check a few of each lot. Dried Angelino plums are more prone to infestation and it is recommended to check them. Pomegranates sold commercially are generally free of infestation. If there is a hole on the outside (similar to a round drill hole), one should cut open the
POMEGRANATES fruit and follow the hole to ensure that there are no worms. Any inner part that is decayed should be discarded. Dark/brownish areas inside the fruit are not a sign of infestation.
RAISINS
Raisins are highly infested and should not be used, regardless of the color and the country of origin.
RASPBERRIES
Raspberries are heavily infested and should not be used.
STAR-FRUIT
Star-fruit should be thoroughly rinsed.
Fresh: Fresh strawberries are heavily infested, and should not be used. Frozen: Fairmont Frozen strawberries with our hashgacha are produced under careful supervision by expert mashgichim, who thoroughly inspect the STRAWBERRIES fruit as they are harvested, and again after the strawberries have gone through the special washing procedures. Although we are constantly trying to produce clean strawberries, in recent years, our mashgichim have not been able to satisfactorily approve strawberries as being completely insect-free; therefore they are currently out of stock.
SUNFLOWER SEEDS
Unshelled: One should purchase only high-quality unshelled sunflower seeds. Each seed should be opened by hand (not cracked open with ones teeth), and checked. Shelled: Shelled sunflower seeds are usually clean if stored properly. One should make sure that there is no webbing or beetles between the seeds.
TAMARINDS
Both sweet and sour tamarinds may be infested at times. Check for holes which are signs of infestation. Tamarind paste is made from inferior quality fruit, and should not be used.
WALNUTS
Unshelled: It is advisable to inspect walnuts (for webbing or crumbs) when cracking them open. Ground: One should ensure that there is no webbing or clumps. For copies of this list, or sponsorship and dedication opportunities, contact 848.210.2196

Klal Yisrael Prepares for Dirshu’s Colossal Celebration of Authentic Torah Achievement HaGaon HaRav Dovid Cohen, Shlita and Many Senior Gedolei Yisrael to Participate By Chaim Gold “Our FATHER is making a simcha! This is a simcha of Hashem Yisborach Himself who is saying, ‘chazu banai chavivai - Look at my dear children who forget all their difficulties and immerse themselves in Torah to such an extent that they have taken tests on all of Shas!!’” These were the impassioned words of HaGaon HaRav Shimon Galei, shlita, last month at the massive Dirshu World Siyum at the Yad Eliyahu Stadium in Tel Aviv, when he addressed thousands of Yidden who had taken Dirshu tests throughout Shas; among them more than 400 ‘Shas Yidden’ who had been tested cumulatively on all of Shas! In the United States, however, the Torah accomplishments of heroic lomdei Dirshu, especially the myriad true Shas Yidden who have invested their hearts and neshamos into learning and being tested, have never been celebrated on the grand scale that they deserve. This coming Sunday at the Prudential Arena in Newark, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and at the Newark Symphony Hall, a grand celebration of true Torah accomplishment of lomdei Torah who have learned, toiled, reviewed, reviewed and reviewed yet again and have been tested on Shas, will be celebrated by all of Klal Yisrael led by Gedolei Yisrael who represent the entire gamut of Torah Jewry! Indeed, the tens of thousands of men and women attending will collectively celebrate the simcha of our FATHER in Newark this Sunday.
Gedolei Yisrael from Eretz Yisrael and America to Grace and Address the Siyum One of the highlights of the event will be the presence of the venerated Rosh Yeshiva of Chevron, HaGaon HaRav Dovid Cohen, shlita, who will be making the journey from Eretz Yisrael specifically to attend and address the siyum. Rav Dovid has seen firsthand the colossal positive impact that learning with Dirshu programs has had on his talmidim and will share his deep impressions as well as the magnitude of the simcha that will celebrate the eternal, unbreakable bond between Klal Yisrael and the Torah Hakedosha. There will be numerous other Roshei Yeshiva, Admorim, Rabbonim and Dayanim both from the United States and abroad who will be gracing this truly historic event where the simcha of immense Torah achievement will be celebrated.
Celebrating the Creation of a New Generation of Real Kinyan Shas Yidden! The Dirshu World Siyum in America this Sunday will be a celebration of hodaah al ha’avar, thanks
for the past - thousands of Shas Yidden was a concept that many thought was nearly extinct, a dream from pre-war Europe before Hitler murdered the towering gaonim of the past -as well as a bakasha and celebration of the asid, the future. Beginning with Masechta Brachos, many thousands of new lomdim have joined Dirshu’s accountable Kinyan Shas program where, as Dirshu’s Nasi, Rav Dovid Hofstedter, shlita, recently said with tremendous emotion, “Chavrei Dirshu don’t ‘do the Daf’, they don’t ‘learn the Daf’,’ they LIVE the Daf! The Daf is their life, it is their very essence, it is the air that they breathe! A Dirshu Yid wakes up in the morning thinking about the Daf and goes to sleep thinking about the Daf. A Dirshu Yid leaves no crack and crevice in his day for the yetzer hara to enter. He takes advantage of every minute to learn; more, better, deeper. He is not satisfied with a small chelek in Torah, he wants a KINYAN and that comes with total commitment to learning.” This will be celebrated this Sunday, at the massive completely sold out events at the Prudential Center, New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), and by Dirshu women at the New Jersey Symphony Hall, all in Newark, and by tens of thousands more who will tune in on various platforms to the live-streaming of the World Siyum all over the world.
The Front Line Heroes and the Behind The Scenes Heroines The obvious heroes of Dirshu are those Yidden who day in and day out, year in and year out, plug away, learning and chazering, such as the Yid from Antwerp who was at the recent Dirshu European Siyum in London. This yungerman works in a supermarket and returns home daily at 6:00 p.m. On the week of his Dirshu test, after returning home from work, eating a quick dinner and seeing his wife and children, this yungeman goes to sleep for several hours. At 12:00 a.m., he is back in the bais medrash where he learns for 7-8 hours until Shacharis! This is something that he has done repeatedly for more than 7 years! It wasn’t a one time thing. That yungerman and any other lomeid Dirshu would not be able to do what they do without their equal partners in learning, the heroic Dirshu wives who possess unparalleled love of Torah and are willing to sacrfice so much because they love the Torah so much. Indeed, most of them don’t look at what they do as a sacrifice because the payback in simchas hachaim, love of Torah and sipuk hanefesh that their husbands and children derive as a result makes it all worthwhile. At the Newark Symphony Hall, the climactic
events at the Prudential Center will be shown live. In addition, the women there will be treated to special programing designed just for them. A keynote address will be given by the prestigious Rebbetzin Sarah Meisels, a daughter of the illustrious Bobover Rebbe, Rav Shlomo Halberstam, zt”l. There will also be a live original musical production made especially for the Dirshu World Siyum by world renowned inspirational composer and singer, Mrs. Miriam Israeli as well as live productions by Mrs. Bracha Jaffe and Mrs. Malky Giniger and much more.
Guidance and Support from Senior Gedolei Yisrael The siyum in America is the culmination and climax of an entire series of Dirshu World Siyumim throughout the World, from Yerushalayim to Manchester, from France to Johannesburg, from London to Tel Aviv… where Torah Jews have gathered to show how much they value accountable limud haTorah and how Dirshu is literally transforming the Torah landscape throughout the world. It is the Gedolei Yisrael from all over the world, however, who are setting the tone by serving as Dirshu’s guiding lights in all matters, and showing Klal Yisrael how much they value the complete revolution in limud haTorah that Dirshu has accomplished. The venerated Sar HaTorah, Rav Chaim Kanievsky, who rarely ventures from his home came with great mesiras nefesh to the Dirshu Siyum several weeks ago in Yad Eliyahu. He wrote, “In our times, there is no greater yom tov than today – when thousands of talmidei chachomim in the Dirshu program have completed Shas!” The Sanzer Rebbe, shlita, expressed his joy about the grand scale siyumim, “It is clear that more people are joining the Daf HaYomi because of the large gatherings celebrating the accomplishments of the lomdim. Recently, while travelling to and from America, I saw so many Yidden, learning the Daf HaYomi. This wasn’t always the case. Large siyumim facilitate so much limud haTorah!” Perhaps the greatest way to encapsulate the simchas haTorah of the World Siyum to be held this Sunday are the words said by the Gadol Hador, HaGaon HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, zt”l, at Dirshu’s previous World Siyum when, at the age of 103, he came with mesiras nefesh. He said, “A gathering of tzaddikim is good for them and good for the world. A gathering of Reshaim is bad for them and bad for the world. It is good,” Rav Shteinman exclaimed forcefully, “to make gatherings like this! They strengthen us all, especially in [difficult times] like this...”
