THE HUNT FOR HEALTH CONTINUES (Re: The Winter Hunt for Health, Issue 230) I found the article on humidifiers to be a real eye-opener. Suddenly, all of our minor winter discomforts make sense. However, my doctor discouraged me from using a humidifier because, from his experience, they can cause more problems in the long term due to the bacteria that can breed in a humidifier and can then be blown into the air. Any advice? E.S. RUCHY REESE RESPONDS: Thank you so much for your letter! Your doctor is absolutely correct in his concern over bacteria being spread through use of humidifiers. In fact, in 2012, seven children were hospitalized in Eretz Yisroel from humidifier-associated Legionnaires’ disease, a particularly aggressive form of pneumonia that is caused by bacteria that can sometimes be found in standing water. Some of the cases were fatal, lo aleinu. As a rule, bacteria love standing water and moist environments, which means humidifiers have the potential to turn into bacteria-colonized danger zones. There’s good news, though: With proper maintenance, a humidifier is a powerful tool and not a danger. As I wrote in the article, humidifiers must be properly cleaned according to the instructions provided in the manual. This usually means that a humidifier owner must be good friends with bleach! Additionally, different types of humidifiers present varying levels of risk. Consumer Reports once did a test on different types of humidifiers to see how much bacteria each contained. Evaporative humidifiers (like the large one I have) were shown to present the least risk. Coolmist ultrasonic humidifiers were the most likely to contain and spread bacteria. And don’t forget that there are also humidifiers that filter the germs out, such as the Honeywell that was featured. In my experience, the benefit that humidifiers offer justifies the efforts involved in frequently sanitizing them.

(Re: Climbing the Money Mountain) First of all, thank you for your practical articles. Your current column on budgeting is super-informative. I hope the couple manages to figure out their financial issues fast! I’d like to use this space to address an uncomfortable reality that is happening to many mosdos. They’re struggling financially. But who isn’t nowadays, you ask? The problem is, though, that when it comes to campaigns and solicitors who call you on behalf of a mosed that hasn’t paid its rebbeim or teachers in a while (and that’s for a separate discussion!), many people don’t respond as warmly as they can. Let’s be honest. It feels so much better to donate to an organization that helps kids with cancer, r”l, or to some place in Russia that’s rebuilding their beis hachaim (and those are very important causes). However, when we hear that our sons’ chedarim can’t pay their bills, we tend to think, “Let the administrators take care of it! They’ll figure it out like they usually do.” This is precisely what Chazal meant when they told us to donate tzedakah to people in our own city first. The importance of realizing this cannot be stressed enough. Let’s hope that our schools and chedarim stay debt-free and have the ease to function without worrying about how to pay the next month’s payroll! And in that zechus, may we be zoche to raise our children easily, while seeing lots of nachas! Just Another Parent
A REASON TO WORRY? I’d like to bring up an issue that causes much unease for parents in our community — and can be easily avoided. Often, kids come home from school, and when their parents ask, “What did you do today?” the answer is something like “It’s a secret,” or “I can’t tell you; my teacher said not to!” And that’s the end of the conversation. Later, the parents might learn that the innocent secret was about a surprise performance, arts and crafts, etc. But in the terrifying world of today, the first sign that a child might be in danger is when they’re told, “Don’t tell your parents.” So why are students hearing this from their educators so often? I truly hope that teachers out there are reading this letter and will begin looking for other ways to up the excitement in their classrooms — without causing needless worrying. A Mother

PA RS H A S BO In Parshas Bo, Hashem brings Makkas Choshech to Mitzrayim. During this plague of darkness, four out of every five of the Bnei Yisroel perished, while only one out of every five survived to ultimately leave Mitzrayim, according to Rashi (on Shemos 13:18). Every Yid in the world today, aside from geirim, descends from that small minority that was zoche to leave Mitzrayim. What was the deciding factor Hashem used in determining which of the Bnei Yisroel would live and which would not? Were the few who survived tzaddikim? We know that the Bnei Yisroel who survived had zechuyos, such as keeping their Yiddishe names and manner of dress. But we also know that they were on the 49th level of tumah, and had they remained in Mitzrayim a moment longer, they would have dropped to the 50th level of tumah and would have been unredeemable. So what was the criterion that determined survival during Makkas Choshech and, subsequently, redemption from Mitzrayim? How was it decided which of the Bnei Yisroel would be zoche to live?
Rashi explains as follows: “Shehayu v’Yisroel b’oso hador resha’im v’lo hayu rotzim l’tzeis u’meisu vishloshes yemei afeilah‌ — Because there were wicked people among Yisroel of that generation who had no desire to leave, and they died during the three days of darkness‌â€? (Rashi on Shemos 10:22). The deciding factor in who would survive and merit to leave Mitzrayim was whether that person desired to be redeemed. R’ Sorotzkin, ztâ€?l, cites the Siach Yitzchok that it was only after Makkas Choshech, and before the tenth makkah, that Hashem gave us our first mitzvah, because it was after Makkas Choshech that Hashem officially chose us as His people. Those who desired Hashem’s redemption survived Makkas Choshech and were solidified as Hashem’s Chosen Nation, and they were officially given their first mitzvah as a nation, that of Rosh Chodesh. The pivotal point was the desire in their hearts. Chazal explain that “b’derech she’adam rotzeh leilach, molichin oso.â€? Hashem leads a person on the path they wish to follow, and those who desired redemption received it. It all comes down to our bechirah, which is our power of choice. In Bamidbar it states that while Bnei Yisroel left Mitzrayim, Hashem destroyed the avodah zarah in Mitzrayim. R’ Yitzchok Radviller, ztâ€?l, explains that the avodah zarah in Mitzrayim only stood as long as they were necessary to give us bechirah. Once we made our choice to follow Hashem, the avodah zarah no longer served a purpose, and they crumbled. We see this principle at play throughout the Torah. When Yaakov Avinu set out from Be’er Sheva for Charan, it says, “He arrived at the place, and he slept there, for the sun had setâ€? (Bereishis 28:11). Chazal explain that Yaakov had passed by Har Hamoriah and only realized it when he reached Charan. He

thought, “Is it possible that I passed by the place in which my ancestors davened, and I did not daven there?” As soon as Yaakov had thoughts of returning, the land contracted (kefitzas haderech), and Yaakov found himself at Har Hamoriah (Sanhedrin 85b). The kefitzas haderech took place upon his having thoughts of return, even before he took any action on those thoughts, such as by beginning to walk back. This shows the power of our desires. Similarly, we see in the Gemara that if a man marries a woman on the condition that he is a tzaddik, the marriage is valid even if he is rasha gamur, chas v’shalom. The Gemara explains, “Perhaps thoughts of teshuvah entered his mind” (Kiddushin 49b). Thoughts of teshuvah alone are enough to validate the marriage without any further action having been taken on those thoughts. And so it was that our desire to be redeemed from Mitzrayim was what led to our redemption. We have a mitzvah of zechiras yetzias Mitzrayim each day and night. The beginning of yetzias Mitzrayim was the desire in our heart to leave Mitzrayim and follow Hashem’s ways. Each and every day, we must desire to leave behind any hindrance to our avodas Hashem, and we must desire to cleave to Hashem. The Rosh explains that even the resha’im Dasan and Aviram were redeemed from Mitzrayim because “they did not despair of hope for redemption.” As long as we keep the fire of yearning in our hearts kindled, Hashem will surely help us. No matter what difficulties we may encounter, and no matter what mistakes we may have made, as long as in our hearts we continue to desire Hashem’s salvation, we will be zoche to it. We must always have hope.

300 Turn Out at Rockland Supervisors’ Summit It was what organizers hope will be the first step in a positive direction when 300 local residents met at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Suffern on January 23 to promote harmony between the many groups who call Rockland County home. The event was hosted by The Coalition to Combat Hatred and Promote Unity, and featured opening remarks by the supervisors of Rockland County’s five towns. Participants met in small, moderated groups to provide input on the major problems plaguing Rockland, and then convened again as a whole to listen to each group’s findings. Not surprisingly, much of the discussion focused on the growth of Rockland’s Jewish community, overdevelopment and zoning laws. For the most part, the discussions remained calm, providing a platform for people to have courteous face-to-face discussions, a first for many who attended the symposium. As the moderator for one of the more than 20 break-
away groups at the summit, Shoshana Bernstein said that she felt it was important for everyone to have an opportunity to share their thoughts. She called the summit “a baby step in the right direction” and said that she believed that honest and respectful dialogue could counter some of the misconceptions that exist in the county. Rabbi Jonathan Gewirtz of Wesley Hills said that one of the women in his group voiced concern about the amount of litter in the county. He noted that it was incumbent upon the entire Monsey community to be careful about cleaning up after themselves. “We are not supposed to leave messes for someone else,” said Rabbi Gewirtz. “A lot of the problems that we are experiencing today come from our community not living up to what we should be. We may be bnei malachim, but we also have a responsibility to others.” The symposium came on the same day that Thomas Walsh was sworn in as the county’s new district attorney. After the ceremony was completed, Walsh noted that he had resigned from his position as a supreme court judge to work for unity in Rockland. According to The Journal News, Walsh promised zero tolerance for hate crimes or any acts of anti-Semitism, racism or bigotry in the county.
Federal Judge Greenlights UTA Discrimination Lawsuit It was a good day in court for Central UTA of Monsey, as U.S. District Court Judge Vincent Briccetti refused to dismiss a case charging the Village of Airmont with illegally using zoning and building inspection laws to prevent the Cherry Lane school from expanding as a way of limiting the growth of the local Jewish community. The Journal News reported that the lawsuit was filed in November 2018 and also charged the Suffern Central School District with illegally denying busing and educational services to disabled students at the school. Judge Briccetti dismissed the busing claims as well as personal responsibility claims against fifteen defendants named in the lawsuit, but the village will be facing six claims including multiple violations of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, passed in 2000 to protect religious institutions from discriminatory zoning when

it goes to trial. Former Mayor Philip Gigante and Airmont’s building and code inspectors are still included in the legal action. Lawyers for the village of Airmont argued in its legal filings that officials were following zoning law when they refused to allow more than 167 students in the school and that UTA had never filed any plans to construct two more buildings on the property, which had previously been home to Ateres Bais Yaakov. In his 54-page decision, Briccetti dismissed claims made by UTA relating to the two new buildings, but agreed that Airmont had acted incorrectly when it limited the property to 167 students, when for the past 20 years it had allowed 400 students at Ateres Bais Yaakov and 600 children at Camp Regesh, which were located at the same site. “Our clients are thrilled that they will get their day in court,” said Keisha Russell of First Liberty Institute, which is representing Central UTA. “We are pleased that the judge dismissed the effort by both the Village of Airmont and the Suffern School District to avoid accountability for their discriminatory actions.”
Back-to-Back Emergencies Hit Sullivan County It was a tough week upstate, with a massive fire in South Fallsburg and an Erev Shabbos bus accident near Bloomingburg both making headlines. The three-alarm fire was first reported on the morning of January 23 at a construction site on Laurel Park Road, at the future home of the Bnos Devorah Raizel Elementary School. The building was nearing completion, had been under construction for two years, and was intended to house the school’s enrollment of nearly 200 students who are currently being educated in trailers and bungalows. Fire crews from Fallsburg, Hurleyville, Loch Sheldrake and Woodbourne were unable to save the building. The Times Herald-Record reported that only a single stone tower and a steel beam survived the blaze. An emergency campaign bearing the endorsement of Rav Elya Ber Wachtfogel has been launched to raise $500,000 to rebuild the school. CHA P T ER FORT Y Recap: Miri visits Tzippy at home, where she is confronted with Tzippy’s empty fridge and the shocking truth that Tzippy has never received a stipend from Korman and that she and her husband are living on practically nothing. The sisters have a heart-to-heart talk in which they discuss how their parents, who never had money either, managed to raise a happy family. Miri, suddenly feeling rich, offers to help Tzippy find a job. When Binyamin walked into the house with his bag of laundry on Motzei Shabbos, he was greeted with upbeat music. “Sorry,” he said with a tired smile. “I thought this was my house.” “It’s always happy here!” his sister Chani said, waiting ready with her camera. “But there isn’t usually so much noise here. Can you lower the music a little?” “Mishenichnas Adar marbin b’simcha!” five-and-a-half-year-old Shloimy said knowingly. “And besides, don’t you know we’re moving? Right after Purim!” “He knows,” Esty said. “I know,” Binyamin said at the exact same time. He sat down on a chair. “Of course I know!” “Oh, so Tatty and Mommy told you?” Four-year-old Bentzy nodded understandingly. Binyamin laughed. “And if they wouldn’t have told me, my friends would have updated me. Almost all of Bnei Brak knows about it!” “Yes, and it’s a little… uncomfortable

I have to take a picture of Nati — look what he’s doing with Binyamin’s hat!” Binyamin observed his siblings having a field day with his hat, the one he had saved up for during two years of yeshivah bein hazmanim. It had served him loyally for Shabbos for half a year before he got a new one for Tzippy’s wedding, at which point he had turned it into his weekday one. But when he’d bought a hat for himself with his own money, he had chosen the best one available. Once upon a time he wouldn’t have allowed his little brothers and sisters to play with that hat, but something inside him had shifted. Maybe it had begun that first night, when he’d gone with Shabsi to learn Mishnayos and had seen the niftar’s worn hat. He had realized then that any hat, no matter how much you invest in it, is a very transient thing. In that sense, he felt like those nights with Shabsi had been beneficial for him. There was something very educational — more than that, inspirational — about the whole thing, and it had definitely been a learning experience. On the other hand, the damage had quickly exceeded the benefit. His all-nighters had pretty much destroyed his sedarim the next day and had gotten him into a major mess. Maybe the time had come to resolve the issue? Perhaps he could muster up the courage to tell his parents that he had lost something — though he had no idea what exactly the lost item was — and that he had to pay for it. He had a little bit of money saved up from his work with Shabsi. During the upcoming Pesach bein hazmanim he would be able to earn some more, although he knew that his father didn’t really like him running from one shul to the next and learning for the money. But he had this vague feeling that whatever was in the envelope was worth much more than the few hundred shekels that he’d be able to earn on his own. “You know, I think you just haven’t gotten back to yourself

Okay, enough, we’ll take it from him.” “It’s fine,” Binyamin mumbled. “He’s not smashing it, so let him have a few more minutes of fun. Where are Tatty and Mommy?” “They left right after Havdalah to some lawyer for the new apartment,” Esty said. “Mommy asked that you should put the little kids to bed, Devorah.” “Thank you, my dear secretary,” Devorah replied. She looked around. “So let’s see who’s going to be the fastest one today… I think it’s going to be Yitzy. No, maybe Bentzy? I can’t guess. What do you say, Binyamin?” “Maybe everyone together?” Binyamin joined the game and hurried to volunteer his services. “I’ll make the beds in the dining room.” Working together, it took them less than a half-hour to get all the kids into bed. Something about the cheerful atmosphere helped Binyamin recover from his headache, at least somewhat. And then his parents came home. “Binyamin, how are you?” Elisheva was happy to see her son. “Did you bring home your laundry? Great. Come, let me get you something warm to drink.” The adults crowded into the kitchen. “So are we really moving in a week and a half, right after Purim?” Binyamin graciously accepted the cup of coffee his mother had prepared for him. “A little later, after rosh chodesh. In the meantime, we’ll try,” his father glanced around, “to find a renter for this apartment.” “Oh, you’re going to rent it out?” Binyamin asked. “Yes. It’s in a good location, and it could be a good income every
month. It’s an asset that’s not worth selling.” “Then maybe Mommy won’t need to work?” Chani asked excitedly. “And is it true that Zeidy is going to sell his tiny apartment instead of renting it out, because he won’t need to pay for the old-age home anymore? My friend told me she heard that.” Elisheva’s lips curved into a mirthless smile. Apparently, he’d called a few numbers that night until he found someone who could come. She’d asked for those numbers, and had received two of them. But neither turned out to be the one she’d been looking for. And she had no more nerve to call Shmuel’s friend again, to ask him to try to get her another one of the numbers that he had called that night. Maybe she should put an ad in the paper: “Seeking bachurim who learned Mishnayos on Monday, 26 Teves, at the Katz home on Ibn Gavriel Street. Bloomberg Makes a Play for Jewish Votes in Florida THE PULSE: Former New York City mayor and current candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination Michael Bloomberg addressed a Jewish audience in Aventura, Florida, on Sunday afternoon. Noting that it was the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Bloomberg addressed concerns of growing anti-Semitism. He mentioned that his father’s family was wiped out by the Nazis. Bloomberg also quoted from Sefer Vayikra and referred to it by its Hebrew name. He appealed to the crowd to do their

According to reports, Bolton wrote that President Trump told him directly that “he wanted to continue freezing $391 million in security assistance to Ukraine until officials there helped with investigations into Democrats including the Bidens.” THE IMPACT: Bolton’s account undercuts a key Re-
publican talking point that there is no direct evidence that links the president to the quid pro quo of withholding Ukrainian military aid. The public release of his account will likely increase pressure on Republican senators to call witnesses to testify at the Senate trial. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer upped the ante by saying that “John Bolton has the evidence. It’s up to four Senate Republicans to ensure that John Bolton, Mick Mulvaney and the others with direct knowledge of President Trump’s actions testify in the Senate trial.”
Republican Senator Says Impeachment Has Taught President Trump a Lesson THE PULSE: Republican Senator Mike Braun (R-IN)
said that President Trump was “taken to the carpet”
by the impeachment process and will be “instructed by what has occurred.” Braun made it clear that he did not think that the president committed an impeachable offense. However, he stated that he believed that the impeachment process will still be instructive because “if you’re pushing the envelope or doing things that may not feel right, let alone be right, you’d better be careful.” THE IMPACT: The sentiment of Senator Braun may not accurately reflect the feelings of the president. The president will probably feel emboldened by an acquittal in the Senate and will not necessarily feel bound by any sense of caution. Senator Braun is likely expressing his sentiment and those of like-minded senators who are planning to vote to acquit the president but are nevertheless conflicted by what type of message they will be sending the president and future administrations.
Dershowitz Argues That Abuse of Power Is Not an Impeachable Offense THE PULSE: During the first three days of the Senate impeachment trial, House managers laid out a detailed account of the president’s actions regarding Ukraine. They laid out their case based on their belief that the president abused his power and that he obstructed Congress by refusing to turn over documents requested by Congress and by refusing to allow administration officials to testify at the Congressional impeachment hearings. The president’s defense team chose not to engage in countering the factual basis of the House manager’s claims; rather, they decided to argue that the alleged infractions did not reach the level of impeachable offenses and did not warrant the removal of a president from office. Alan Dershowitz, one of the lead lawyers defending the president, claimed that even if the president abused his power, it is not an impeachable offense as it is not a criminal act. THE IMPACT: President Trump’s defense team is
making the most straightforward argument for Republican senators to acquit the president. Their strategy appears to be working as Republican senatorial support for Trump has held steadfast despite the constant drip of additional negative information. However, failure to directly refute the concerns that have been raised regarding the president’s actions may not resonate well with the electorate. A winning strategy for the impeachment trial may not necessarily result in a political win for the president.

Are HIGH EXPECTATIONS Holding You Back From Being Healthy?
Strongest advice to be given, when starting a program, is to set goals. You must set goals. Without goals what are you said to have accomplish? The problem that we face when making goals is that they come with expectation. Now I am sure you don’t need me to tell you this that life rarely goes the way we except it to. With this in mind we want to think what happens when these expectation don’t get met? A lot of us tend to feel like we’re the problem. “Something is wrong with me,” we’d say. “There is something wrong with the program.” “This process is not worth it.” … etc Now, this doesn’t mean you need to remove all expectation and just be ok with what ever happens.
By having high expectation on what you are going to do as well as learning to manage your assumptions on the results you believe you’re going to get, you will build the resilience to handle whatever comes your way. Before I finish off I want to make sure you understand one important point. Life is a marathon, not a race. Li Life rewards the person that is consistent not the one that sprints ahead only to give up after the first mark. There are going to be days where you don’t want to show up. That is ok! That is normal! By beating yourself up, you will burn yourself out. On the other hand by showing yourself compassion, you will surprise yourself with just how far you can go.
On the country you want to set high expectations. The way you make expectations work in your favor is recognizing where those expectations lay. Most people put their expectations on the outcomes they are hoping to get. For example : lose 4 pound every week for the next 12 weeks to be able OR to fit into this pair of pant size by the upcoming wedding in 2 months time. Instead of setting the exceptions on these types of Ins results it would be more beneficial to set the expectations on Yourself: What are you going to do?
The road ahead is going to come with its obstacles. The good news is that you can increase your chance of success. With the systemized approach of the Smith System you gain the roadmap that will guide you toward your own personal success. COOKIE STICKS

I enjoy baking cookie sticks. They are simple to make, yield a large quantity, and can be decorated for special occasions. Did I mention that they are irresistibly delicious and freeze well? They also make great fillers for hostess packages, as they can be kept at room temperature for a couple of days. All these cookie sticks were baked in disposable cookie sheets, which I doubled to create a sturdier pan. For easier everyday snacking, these can be cut into small bars.

Chocolate Chip Biscotti Sticks
An everyday favorite. For a healthier version, try using whole-wheat flour and turbinado sugar.
INGREDIENTS 5 eggs 1½ cups sugar 1½ cups oil 5 cups flour 1 level T. baking powder 1½ T. vanilla sugar ½ tsp. salt 1 cup mini chocolate chips
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Beat first three ingredients using a mixer fitted with the cookie hook attachment. Lower speed and add remaining ingredients, leaving chocolate chips for last. 2. Transfer dough onto parchment-lined cookie sheet. Spread out batter evenly using wet hands. Bake for 35 minutes. 3. Allow to cool, and cut into 1¼ x 6” sticks. Decorate with melted chocolate.

Almond-Crusted Sticks A marzipan-flavored delicacy.
INGREDIENTS 3 sticks margarine
5 cups flour
Pinch salt
3 eggs
1 T. baking powder
3 T. pareve milk or juice
1 egg yolk
1½ tsp. almond extract
1½ cups sugar
2 tsp. vanilla sugar
TOPPING 1 egg white
1 cup sliced almonds
Sugar for sprinkling
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Beat margarine, eggs and sugar in a mixer fitted with the cookie hook attachment. Add remaining ingredients. 2. Transfer dough to parchment-lined cookie sheet. Smooth dough using wet hands, then smear with egg white and sprinkle with almonds and sugar. Bake for 30 minutes. 3. Allow to cool, and cut into 1¼ x 6” sticks. Decorate with melted chocolate.

These are moist and chewy with a trio of flavorful additions.
INGREDIENTS 1 T. vanilla sugar
5 eggs
2 cups brown sugar ½ tsp. salt 1 cup sugar
½ cup craisins
1½ cups oil
1 cup chocolate chips
5 cups flour ½ cup cocoa 1 T. baking powder
1 cup crushed pistachios, for topping
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Beat first four ingredients in a mixer fitted with the cookie hook attachment. Add flour, cocoa, baking powder, vanilla sugar and salt. Mix well. Add craisins and chocolate chips. 2. Transfer to parchment-lined pan. Smooth dough using some water, if necessary. Sprinkle top with crushed pistachios. Bake for 40 minutes. 3. Allow to cool, and cut into 1¼ x 6” sticks. Drizzle with melted brown and white chocolate, if desired.

I was young, idealistic and eagerto-please when my husband expressed his intense desire to build a Torah-true home, one with its doors open to guests.

e’d just returned to the States after spending the few years before our marriage learning in Eretz Yisroel, and there, he’d been an appreciative recipient of gracious hospitality. He was in awe of his hosts, who despite being challenged with dire financial situations and cramped living quarters, opened their homes to him and other bachurim and nourished them, often with limited food, but always with an abundance of genuine ahavas Yisroel. Inspired, his appetite was whet, and he, too, strived for a life of increased kedusha and chesed. I nodded with sincerity. Little did I know what I was committing myself to with those few innocent head movements. Little did I know how it would impact the structure of our home and how it would change the landscape of the cozy abode that I aspired to build. My home would nurture more than just family; it would be a place where privacy is not a given. This project brought along its challenges, but the tradeoff is priceless. Hachnasas orchim was no stranger to my past. My father would sometimes walk in on Shabbos or yom tov accompanied by eccentric and downtrodden individuals, and he’d serve them much more than a hearty meal. He tended to them with respect and attentiveness and

would honor them to sing a niggun or share a dvar Torah — and woe to those of us who dared snicker in their presence. Both my maternal and paternal grandparents welcomed strangers into their homes frequently, and on yom tov we would often take shifts to help my grandmother, who lived upstairs, serve the myriads of people crowded around their modest dining room table. Even then, as youngsters, we were awed by the divine brachos that flowed in my grandmother’s pots, always accommodating the assembled with more food that their size would portray. Apartments were scarce in Brooklyn at the time of my marriage, and we were delighted to find a charming, newly renovated
flat that was both affordable and located in a great neighborhood. But my husband could not come to terms with the fact that he would not have an extra bedroom in his home in which to put up guests. So we found ourselves, a starryeyed couple during sheva brachos, in a furniture store, where we ordered a simple high-riser to adorn our meticulously furnished dining room. My husband then graciously treated me to an expensive set of custom bedspreads “to make it look like a couch.” (A few years ago we finally disposed of those beds. It was a pretty emotional parting. Who knows how many zechusim lay in those battered mattresses?) It didn’t take long for me to learn to increase the amount of food in
my husband’s lunch box, despite his being a small eater. The regards I got confirmed my suspicions that there was always someone hungrier than he was with whom he would share his repast. It was when I was newly married and preparing supper for two that my husband came home from Maariv late one evening with energized excitement, accompanied by three Israeli men who had just arrived from the airport —

But if the customer wants only specific foods, then the owner would be under no obligation to serve him. This was my first hachnasas orchim lesson.

It is exclusively about filling the needs of others: to satiate them and make them feel comfortable and wanted. Our in-house guest appearance started out slowly and infrequently, but was on a steady incline. By now we can sometimes have as many as 30 additional participants around our Shabbos table, and we have to shuffle tables and chairs during Shabbos to seat them all.

Both strangers and acquaintances often stop me to inquire how we manage to pull off this guest business. “How can you bring people into your home at all hours without prior notice?” they ask. I would love to be able to boast about my housekeeping skills and pride myself with the fact that mine is a home that’s always in tip-top shape. But in reality, our family has, baruch Hashem, been blessed with an active brood of delicious, lebedige kinderlach who spill toys and juice and manage to turn my entire house into one big play zone, leaving much clutter and mess in their wake. They, like all children, need clean clothes, nourishing food and an attentive mommy. More often than not, even with hired cleaning help, there is little time left to shine and polish. There are times when even to collect the day’s clutter isn’t within my capacity. I admit that it is often difficult to prepare a meal and a clean bed for a total stranger when the basics in my home have not yet been tended to. I try to muster the strength despite my emotional and phys-

But being that I am human as anyone else, my attitude often fails and I get stuck in negative thoughts: I’ll complain and fervently wish that I had not been put to test at such a vulnerable moment. But, baruch Hashem, although these challenges do come up, I don’t let them incapacitate me to the point of hindering our chesed activities. There is a definite line in hosting obligations. There’s a wide gap between the gracious hosting of family and friends, people who have been blessed with the security of a warm home, food and the wherewithal to hold their own fort, who are just in the mood for a reprieve — and those who are unfortunately dependent on others, even if temporarily, for a meal or a bed. There is surely a special beauty in accommodating close ones in one’s home. I, for one, enjoy this kind of hosting immensely. It treats me to social satisfaction and is way more pleasurable than serving and putting up random men whom my husband and boys entertain. But unless it’s your parents or in-laws who wish to be hosted, there is no obligation for you to open your home to provide a getaway for family and friends. When one is not in a position to handle the extra stress, declining to invite may just be the right thing. On the contrary, when a hungry person is in need

of a meal, it is a Torah obligation to help, and one should even overextend oneself to do so. That said, if one is not up to catering to guests at the time, it’s okay to find them different accommodations. Do it respectfully, and if applicable, offer an explanation. When our business faltered and our financial situation was really tough, we relied on Hashem to sponsor our activities. Through His infinite chesed and dedicated messengers, we always managed to swing our hefty food bills, baruch Hashem. The nature of our type of guesting is that although we have regulars — as well as random strangers — almost weekly, the heavy traffic when we expect dozens of orchim is usually seasonal. During those hectic times, my house resembles a mismanaged hotel. I happily let go of the extra flair. We skip fancy chargers, and even forgo china and crystals, to focus on the most important stuff: the people, food and mood. Although we do encourage people to call us in advance, we often have many unaccounted-for individuals popping in. Preparing meals without even an estimated participant list can be puzzling, but over the years, experience has taught me that the Shabbos menu is stretchable. When an influx of unexpected guests arrive and food is tight, we will start the meal with

I’ll let the men sing a few lebedige zemiros and only then serve the fish, after everyone’s hunger has been tamed. Fish portions in our home get prepared at times with rachamim and at times with “din,” the latter which my kids jokingly refer to as “salami slices.” My large pot of soup
usually feeds all, and the main dish gets served French-style with a variety of kugels so that no one gets hungry even with smaller meat portions. Many of our guests are chashuve bnei Torah from Eretz Yisoreol who are facing unbearable difficulties. They are forced to leave the comfort of their homes and forgo their tight learning schedule to figure out a way to support their families. It’s painful to watch how difficult and terribly degrading it is for them to be dependent on the mercy of their kindhearted brethren while they endure their personal galus. We are happy to give them a place to call home and an opportunity to enjoy Shabbos in a heimishe atmosphere with homemade food and lots of singing. We offer a haven where they can forget about their woes and truly rest. Their heartfelt brachos accompany our family, and we’ve merited lots of siyata d’Shmaya that we attribute to this mitzvah. Once, a family member was

faced with a medical crisis, and we were anxiously waiting for the diagnosis. We were expecting a lot of company at the time and were contemplating whether to take a reprieve and cancel all guests until the situation would settle. Finally, we decided to put up the guests despite the difficulties it entailed as a zechus for a yeshuah. From the hospital, we made phone calls and accepted all offers for help with the cooking, and a family member moved in to coordinate Shabbos. Ultimately, we merited a yeshuah way beyond our expectations — the zechus definitely stood us in good stead. Another time, I found myself in a fearful situation that caused us a lot of anxiety. When I went to take care of the issue, I encountered a poor suffering

A Note to the Hosts • Don’t strive to be a perfect hostess. It’s difficult for guests to relax in an environment where perfection is expected. • Most guests will arrive hungry. Try to have drinks and a light snack handy. • Guests feel uncomfortable to bother their hosts with requests. Make sure their room temperature is comfortable, prepare extra pillows, negel vasser gear, toothbrushes, shoe polish, etc., for their convenience. • Be welcoming. Don’t make your guests feel like they’re a burden on you. • Provide a listening ear, but never probe for information. Respect your guests’ privacy. • Don’t expect your kids to act like angels. While it’s uncomfortable to settle a fight or deal with a full-blown tantrum with strangers around, remember that these occurrences portray your family as regular and healthy and may just make your guests feel at home.

soul we knew well right there in the office. It was someone we tended to regularly, not as a guest, but with other help he needed. He always managed to call at the most hectic times when we had to stretch in all directions to take care of his needs. As soon as I saw him, my fears dissipated. I took it as a sign that this zechus was accompanying me through this challenge, and that everything would turn out okay. It did. People always want to know how all this hosting affects our children, the dearest people in our lives. I try not to throw the brunt of the work onto them, but despite my efforts, in a project of such magnitude, there will usually be spillover. Baruch Hashem, they usually pick up on the need responsibly. My offspring may be missing out on the coziness of only-family Shabbosos (it does happen sometimes!) and of being the sole object of their parents’ attention. They do gain other benefits, though. Over the years
they have adopted loving uncles, been captivated by amazing stories, and entertained by many an interesting fellow. When my boys attend beis midrash in Eretz Yisroel, they get treated like VIPs. They are warmly welcomed and often invited by guests of ours who are thrilled to reciprocate. Additionally, our open-door policy has turned our children into perceptive, selfless and caring individuals. These positive traits take them far as they move on in life. Sometimes we do hit tough situations, or host difficult and bitter individuals whose behavior can be especially hard for my children. At those times, I gently remind them that the zechus and the everlasting benefits are theirs to keep. And I daven that in the merit of sharing the love and warmth of our home with total strangers, may they always be zoche to have their own cozy nest and never be in a position to rely upon the mercy of others.
A Note to Family and Friends Not everyone is in a position to host regularly. If you are acquainted with someone who is, keep the following in mind: • Don’t assume that you can send guests without asking if they are available to host. • Don’t give an unstable person their number or address without permission. • Don’t dump your leftover challah or food on their stoop. • Never make the mitzvah more difficult with comments such as: • “I hope you screen you guests very carefully, because such and such has happened…” • “Shabbos is meant for family time and to focus on the kids.” • “Who says it’s even a mitzvah?” • If you have the means to help with something, offer to send cake, kugels or cut-up fruits. • If the host is struggling financially, offer to help with money and have a zechus in this great mitzvah.

“My mother hinted that I should take some lessons from you about how to be a balabusta… She said everything is so very neat in your house, that everything has its place…” At that, I burst out laughing. My cousin had called me after I hosted her parents for one night, enabling them to attend the bris she was making in the morning without their having to travel from out of town in the early a.m. hours. “Don’t worry,” I assured her. “I had a few hours to clean up. My home is not usually so perfect. In fact, let’s count the things on my kitchen island at this very moment…” By the time we got to 15 items, I stopped, point proven. It’s a fact: Homes that are lived in have things about. Many, many things. And while advance notice of arriving guests gives us a chance to pretend we’re great balabustas, there’s nothing quite like unannounced or last-minute guests to send a shiver up the spine of the average housewife, whipping her into a cleaning frenzy. I mean, really, how do you preserve dignity on short notice? Here are some tips culled from homemakers like you and I, who also panic when guests haven’t booked a week or so in advance... Gather and Hide
Unless they’ll be sleeping over, guests usually visit three areas of the house: the dining and/or living room, the kitchen and the main bathroom. Those are your areas of focus.
Go through the main hosting areas, scoop up anything that’s out of place, and dump it into the basket. Then hide the basket in one of the no-go zones. You’ll deal with the mess later. (I hope!)
Run around the house and close doors to any areas that are not presentable. A closed door not only signals to guests that a room is a no-go zone, it also blocks any mess from view.

I hate the kitchen. Elaborate cookbooks with their eye-candy recipes notwithstanding, the easiest, quickest and laziest route is the one I tend to take. Every now and then, after being forced to endure a prolonged spell in the kitchen, I go on strike. These strikes sometimes coincide with Shabbos. My story begins on a Shabbos morning of one such strike. My husband was at shul, and I was trying to decide whether to go meet him or clean up the artfully dispersed toy clutter that was decorating my apartment. Cleaning up the apartment might have seemed like the
We’ve got challah, I mused, and the overnight chicken soup and egg salad will just have to be minuscule in portion. Hopefully I’ll have enough vegetables to concoct some sort of salad, and for dessert, I can always cut up some fruit. When we got to our apartment, I casually shoved the toys blocking our paths to one side and graciously showed our guests into the living room. With no nerves to make any more polite conversation, I made a beeline for the kitchen and proceeded to tackle my “yesh me’ayin” assignment. Thankfully, my children did not so much as hint to the lack of food. Perhaps they were even more accustomed to such seudos than I’d thought. I made nothing of the tiny quantities served, though during the course of the meal, I did mention my aversion to cooking and inability to produce anything remotely gourmet. The meal took much longer than expected. Our guests (whose names turned out to be Harry and Linda) really seemed to enjoy our company and were very engaging. Despite not being frum, they had an unbelievable scope of knowledge about Yiddishkeit and were extremely proud of their heritage. I found their unapologetic attitude so inspiring, it made me wonder if we would be able to hold our heads as high as theirs in an unwelcoming society. Either way, I was relieved when they stayed on long after the meal, clearly enjoying themselves. I just hoped they had some kind of satisfying snacks awaiting them in their hotel room; they were surely starving. After making a firm resolve not to have a repeat performance of this embarrassing event, I put the matter out of my mind. Until a few days later, when a package turned up unexpectedly in our mailbox. As I opened the box, a note flew out.

Approaching the shul yard, I saw my husband coming toward me, grinning broadly. “Guess what?” he said. “We’ve got guests!” Standing a polite distance away were a keen-looking, seemingly unaffiliated middle-aged couple. They were foreign, here for business. Somehow, it had not entered their minds to make arrangements for the Shabbos meals, though they did take enough pride in their heritage to make it a point to attend shul. They seemed so relieved to have received a spontaneous invitation. Little did they know what was (or to be more precise, wasn’t) lying in store for them. “How wonderful!” I said cheerfully, hoping my face was belying my churning insides. As we walked home from shul, I desperately tried to make small talk while simultaneously performing the mental gymnastics: How was I going to stretch my humble nothing to feed another two mouths?

Menachem: I feel that my vision so far wasn’t even to get out of debt, but rather to feel like we’re not drowning anymore. I’m finally starting to feel like we’re swimming, instead of desperately splashing around treading water. We have a plan and we’re working hard; Hashem will help things fall into place. And now I feel ready to dream bigger, to set goals of how we’ll get out of debt and when we’ll finally be completely in the clear and out of the water. I want to create a calendar with goals and a schedule. But first, Leah and I have a discussion about why we want to get out of debt and what money means to us. We have a lot of dreams: We want to get out of debt so we can have financial freedom, save up to buy a house, and have enough for fun stuff — like vacations and trips with the kids to visit my parents in Europe. We want to be able to have enough put away so that we can retire early and enjoy our family. My wife says her dreams are establishing a business she can work from anywhere, and traveling four times a year. How’s that for fun? She also wants to have flexible hours so that we can have family time together on Sundays. But for now she just wants enough to go to the grocery every week... I’m starting to think it’s very doable! Our coach says the next step is a $1,000 emergency fund. We’re aiming to fill it up within the first two months. He also reads through our wish list and smiles. He says dreaming is good because it keeps us motivated. It’s an uphill climb, but you get the strength to keep going when you think of the view from the top.

• Emergencies happen, and money usually helps. Think about this: Around 66% of Americans — that’s two-thirds! — cannot cover a $1,000 emergency without going into debt. When you have the money to replace a flat tire or to cover your son’s stitches, emergencies become mere inconveniences, as opposed to catastrophes. Having an emergency fund will prevent you from making rash decisions that turn a bad situation worse.
• Another reason to have a wish list: Your budget should always balance out to zero — this way you know exactly where every dollar is going. What happens if you have a business like Leah’s, where your take-home pay varies from month to month? Put the amount that you can definitely count on each month into your regular budget. Then plan a wish list for the extras, listed in order of your priorities.
• Write up a wish list. This is good because it keeps you focused on positive thoughts for the future. The Baal HaTanya says, “Tracht gut vet zein gut.” The thoughts you put out into the world become your reality. This is known all over the world as the Law of Attraction, and it has been proven in science with quantum mechanics. Dreaming brings a smile back to your face and puts the spark back into life. A successful hotel requires numerous management roles, including a HOTEL MANAGER who is responsible for the hotel’s overall operations, a DIRECTOR OF SALES who oversees group reservations and the like, and a SHIFT LEADER who manages on-duty staff. If the hotel includes a banquet hall, conference rooms, or other such amenities, then you can expect to find an EVENT PLANNER or WEDDING COORDINATOR on staff as well.
Since many hotels feature restaurants or an in-room meal service, a full kitchen staff can often be found on premises. This typically includes a/an: who is responsible for the menu and daily kitchen operations

RECEPTIONISTS, also known as a clerks, are responsible for welcoming guests upon arrival, checking visitors in and out, distributing keys, and dealing with reservations and payments. They also handle any complaints or inquiries that may arise.
The hotel CONCIERGE is charged with providing guests with information about surrounding attractions, transportation options and local dining venues. The concierge may also book reservations on behalf of the guests and coordinate sightseeing tours and the like. BELLHOPS, also known as porters, assist guests with their luggage as they unload or load their belongings to and from the hotel. Bellhops may also escort the guests and help them gain familiarity with the hotel setup and location of accomodations. HOUSEKEEPING staff are usually tasked with making beds, replacing towels, vacuuming carpets, disinfecting bathrooms, and refreshing the rooms with new toiletries and knick-knacks as needed.
