HOW CAN WE GET OUT? (Re: Climbing the Money Mountain) Thanks for your great series on financing. It is very important for people to be educated on how to use their money properly.

I’m sure there are many people who have the money, but don’t know how to spend it in the right way, which leads them into debt. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, we are not zoche to fall into this category. We, baruch Hashem, have a house full of kids, and we try our best to bring in money through kosher sources, al teharas hakodesh; we are not ready to go in the direction of employment that requires Internet use. Even with my holding down a full-time job, our monthly income does not even cover a quarter (!) of our monthly expenses, which include only the bare minimum of rent, utilities, groceries and tuition. (I’m not even including cleaning help, car/taxi expenses, shoes and clothing, which we do without, and the unavoidables like appliance repair or replacement).

Our debt grows by thousands every month.

I am sure there are many out there like us who fall into this category. What is the solution for me?

PA RS H A S VA’ E I R A Yisroel*, a chassid whose family lived in Eretz Yisroel, was teaching in a yeshivah in New York back in the days when making a phone call to Eretz Yisroel was prohibitively expensive. One Thursday, Yisroel received a letter from his brother in Eretz Yisroel explaining that their father had suffered a heart attack and was critically ill. Yisroel realized that his father had probably been sick since Sunday or earlier, as the mail took some time to arrive. He became greatly concerned.

Yisroel immediately went to a rebbe in Brooklyn and gave a kvittel explaining the situation.

The rebbe replied: “The teaching of our rebbes is known: ‘Tracht gut vet zein gut — Think good and it will be good.’ I await good news.� Yisroel immediately felt calm, as the rebbe’s reply indicated that his father was still alive. Yisroel’s outlook immediately became more positive, and he began davening and saying Tehillim in anticipation of hearing good news about his father’s health. After a few days, Yisroel made the expensive call to his mother, who informed him that his father’s condition had stabilized on Thursday evening, and he was no lon-

ger in danger, baruch Hashem.

Yisroel returned to the rebbe to share the good news about his father’s improvement. When Yisroel approached the rebbe, the rebbe asked Yisroel if he had good news to share. Yisroel replied that he did indeed have good news: His father was out of danger. The rebbe asked when the improvement had taken place, and Yisroel replied that it had happened on Thursday evening. The rebbe then asked Yisroel when he had started thinking positively, and Yisroel told him that it had been Thursday evening. The rebbe concluded with a reminder to always think positively.

Tracht gut vet zein gut. Is it just a wise expression, or is there more to it? Is this Yiddish expression rooted in truth? Does it have a source in the Torah?

It says in this week’s parsha, “V’samti f’dus bein ami u’vein amecha l’machar yih’yeh ha’os hazeh — And I will make a distinction between My people and your people; this sign will come about tomorrow�

“bring down” or “pull in,” is spelled aleph-mem-nun, which has the same shoresh as emunah. Through having emunah, we bring forth hashpa’ah.

We see that having emunah and bitachon creates channels through which bracha flows, but what is the connection between emunah and bitachon and “thinking good,” and how does “thinking good” ensure that it will “be good”? The Divrei Yisroel of Modzhitz, zt”l, teaches that genuine bitachon brings a person simcha, and this simcha brings bracha, as it states, “Baruch hagever asher yivtach ba’Hashem, v’haya Hashem mivtacho — Blessed is the person who trusts in Hashem; Hashem shall be his trust” (Yirmiyahu 17:7). The word v’haya expresses simcha.

A person’s simcha proves that he truly trusts in Hashem and that therefore circumstances will get better, as it says, “Hashem shall be his trust.”

The Baal HaTanya, zt”l, teaches, “It is not one’s circumstances that determines one’s mood, but one’s mood that determines one’s circumstances.” Emunah and bitachon lead a person to understand that everything that happens to them, from big to small, comes from Hashem, which gives the person a good “mood” — a more positive outlook on life. Positive thinking, in turn, has the power to turn a painful situation around.

Furthermore, when facing times of challenge, it is only natural to fall into despair.

Rising above that despair is rising above nature, which can, in turn, draw down a reciprocal act from Hashem of bringing about a supernatural salvation.

May we all work on our emunah and bitachon to harness the power in the dictum “tracht gut vet zein good,” and may it indeed be good for us all.

Evergreen to Open Pomona Store Ending years of speculation, Evergreen will be expanding into the northern end of town, taking over the space currently occupied by a Route 202 supermarket in 2021.

When its lease expired on August 31, The Journal News reported, Stop & Shop announced that due to poor performance, it would be closing its Pomona store in the Pacesetter Park Shopping Center.

At 50,000 feet, the Pomona Evergreen will be more than 65% larger than the store’s Monsey location, which opened in 2013, and double the size of the Lakewood store, which opened in 2017. Evergreen’s owners are partners in the shopping center, which is located just over one mile east of Route 306.

The supermarket will undergo both interior and exterior renovations and will feature groceries, fresh meats, produce, baked goods, fish, sushi, a full-service deli and a health food section. Route 202 had long been considered Monsey’s final northern frontier, but in recent years, numerous families have moved into Pomona, Haverstraw and Garnerville, opening up the area to new Jewish communities.

No target date has been set yet for Evergreen’s Pomona opening, which is expected to bring 200 jobs to the area.

Bingo has also set its sights on Monsey, with a 100,000-square-foot Costco-style warehouse store slated for the Spring Valley Marketplace, according to the Rockland County Business Journal. No opening date has been announced yet for the Monsey Bingo, which is the third to open in the United States in a joint venture between Israel’s Osher Ad and the Brooklyn-based Marav USA.

Cuomo Allocates Security Funding for New Square and Monsey Security cameras and license plate readers will be making their way to the area’s Jewish communities, with Governor Andrew Cuomo announcing $680,000 in funding to be split evenly between New Square and the greater Monsey area.

Standing with New Square Mayor Israel Spitzer and Rabbi Chaim Leibish Rottenberg at a Ramapo Town Hall press conference last Monday, the governor spoke about the need for improved security measures as a deterrent to prevent hate crimes. Cuomo announced the funding with a lighthearted moment that he had shared with Mayor Spitzer.

“He wanted more license plate readers,” said Cuomo.

“I said, ‘Can’t we just get 100 Josef Glucks on all the corners?’ He said, ‘No, we need an electronic system.’”

In response, Cuomo announced that he will direct $340,000 to install license plate readers in New Square.

Cuomo allocated another $340,000 for cameras and license plate readers in Monsey, saying, “While we pray for solidarity, we march for solidarity, we gather today for solidarity, government has an additional obligation, which is the obligation to act.”

Vowing to take a stand against ignorance as a means of preventing hate crimes, Cuomo aims to expand public school curriculums about diversity, tolerance, Holocaust studies and cultural awareness of the Jewish community. Cuomo said that he wanted children to “understand what happened to the Jewish community. Understand the relationship between the Jewish community and New York State. And understand that New York would not be New York without the Jewish community.”

County Health Department Offering Free Radon Testing In conjunction with Radon Action Month, the Rockland County Department of Health is offering free home radon testing for low- to moderate-income families and senior citizens.

Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the U.S. and cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. It typically occurs when rocks and soil from underneath a home make their way into a building through cracks and openings in a building’s lowest level. The New York State Department of Health, the Surgeon General and the United States Environmental Protection Agency all recommend that every home be tested for radon.

The free testing kits are being offered by the health department’s Healthy Neighborhoods Program, which also offers home safety visits to identify and discuss issues including fire, carbon monoxide and cooking safety, as well as asthma triggers. Free safety products and service are distributed based on need while supplies last.

Recap: Elisheva’s father is thrilled with the apartment his daughter won. The Potolskys plans to make a suite for him there, so he could move in with them.

Elisheva and Eliyahu take a tour of their new apartment. It’s huge and loaded with lots of extras, and Elisheva feels guilty for liking it so much.

“What are you doing here, Miri?” Tzippy asked, as she bumped into her sister at the intersection of Nechemia and Chazon Ish streets.

“I went with Tatty and Mommy to see the apartment, and then I took care of some errands in this area.”

“How nice!” Tzippy chirped. “Now you can come over to me!”

Miri didn’t object. She hadn’t visited her sister since her wedding.

“I have nothing special to serve you, though.

Just some cake left over from Shabbos.”

“Please, I’m not coming to eat!” They walked into the building, and Miri took Shmuely out of the carriage. “You don’t need to feel pressured because of me.”

“That’s what you say,” Tzippy said in a low voice, and started to climb the stairs. Miri stared at her for a long moment, and then followed her sister, her baby in her arms.

“So, how’s their apartment?” Tzippy asked as she turned the key in the lock.

“It’s really nice. Huge.” Miri took a deep breath. “It’s obvious that it was designed as a very fancy place: the paint job, the moldings, gorgeous light fixtures in the whole house — including a chandelier in the dining room and a really nice piece in the dinette — and marble or ceramic floors; I don’t know the difference.

The whole house has a very modern, shiny look. I wonder how it will look like with Tatty

and Mommy’s furniture. Actually, the dining room has a built-in bookcase made of plasterwork, I think, so they don’t need to bring their old one along.”

“There are already light fixtures and a bookcase installed?”

“I don’t know if it’s actually a bookcase, but what else do you call a piece of furniture in the dining room that has lots of shelves?” Miri shrugged. “I think we automatically assume it’s for seforim; I don’t know what the original plan for it was. Maybe it was just meant for knickknacks.”

“Right, that’s the strange part here. I get the feeling that this apartment was almost ready to be moved into. Someone planned it down to the last detail.”

“That’s possible. Why is that strange?” Miri sat down on the couch in the living room.

While the apartment here might not have been as glitzy as her parents’, it was very spacious and fully furnished — on a much higher standard than her parents intended to furnish their new place.

“It sounds like someone really put a lot of thought into the apartment, and then backtracked at the last minute and sold it to U’shemartem.”

“Maybe that’s what happened. But so what?”

“Well, such sales could be very problematic.

Who knows what the story is there with the title and all the legal stuff? I don’t know enough about this American organization to know how reliable it is.

Isn’t it possible that this apartment has serious legal issues? You have no idea what kind of stories I’ve heard about Chinese auctions like that.”

“What do you mean? What kind of stories?”

“About an apartment that was built illegally, without any of the neighbors’ approval, and then it was put up as a raffle prize. The winner found himself embroiled in a whole series of legal battles just to get the apartment to become legally his.”

Miri raised her eyebrows.

“That kind of story can’t be the norm, Tzippy. I mean, I don’t understand much about titles and such things, but come on, a beautiful house they can call their own? That’s the main thing! I’m sure everything else — all the technicalities and details — will somehow work themselves out afterward.”

“You think so?”

“Absolutely.” Miri tried not to look around and focused her gaze on the plate of cake that Tzippy had set in front of her. “Anyone who owns a nice, big home has got it made! And they shouldn’t worry about details like that. They should just appreciate that they have a great place to live, have furniture, and don’t have to scramble to pay rent and struggle to cover it every month. And that they don’t have to crowd a family into a tiny, two-room apartment — with the knowledge that this is it for the next decade for sure…

Anyone like that can be nothing but happy!”

“I think that’s a bit of a narrowminded thought,” Tzippy remarked, looking at the piece of cake she’d helped herself to.

Miri looked up at her sister. “Narrow-minded?” She didn’t notice how loaded her voice sounded.

“Yes. There are more important things in life than a good apartment.”

“Oh, of course, I know that. Good children, health, shalom bayis… You don’t need to remind me that not everything begins and ends with money,

my tzadeikes sister.”

“I actually did mean something that begins and ends with money. I wasn’t talking about the more significant things in life.”

“So which something are you talking about?”

Tzippy stood up abruptly and walked over to the fridge. “Tell me the truth. What do you think is inside here right now?”

“In your refrigerator?” Miri looked at Tzippy quizzically. “How should I know?”

“Let’s put it this way: What do you have in your refrigerator right now?”

“Mine? You really want to know?”

“Here and there they did; it amounted to a few hundred shekels,” Tzippy whispered.

“That, with the money from our wedding gifts, goes mainly to pay for electricity, water, gas and the telephone bill, and the little that is left over I use for groceries.”

“So how are you managing?”

“Like you see. I think we have a balance now of a hundred and something shekels in the bank. Peretz doesn’t want an overdraft, even though the banks have a heter iska.”

“Tatty and Mommy also never had an overdraft, as far as I know.”

Tzippy came back to sit next to her sister. “I really don’t know how they managed all these years.”

“You’ll also manage,” Miri said soothingly. She laid a gentle hand on her sister’s shoulder. “Remember, there are many newlyweds who are in the exact same situation as you. B’ezras Hashem, you’ll find a job. Don’t forget that Mommy worked when we were little, and then we sold Tatty’s tea.”

“That tea caused more losses than profits, didn’t it?” Tzippy picked up another piece of cake, but then returned it to the plate.

“At first it went well. Tatty didn’t just concoct a strange brew; it was a blend of herbs, and he himself saw how they helped with his migraines. Lots of people were very grateful to him for that tea. Mommy told us about it.”

“Yes, I remember. But at one point,

A pot with vegetable soup. An eggplant-mushroom dip from Shabbos. A pan with some leftover chicken. Chocolate spread… mayonnaise… ketchup… butter…

Um… what’s on the top shelf? Apple cake, I think. That’s it.”

“I’m sure that on the door, and in the fruit and vegetable drawers, and in the freezer, there are a few more things,” Tzippy said. “But let’s not go that far.” She jerked open the two doors of her refrigerator. “Now come and see what’s in my fridge. Even Mommy’s fridge was never this empty.”

The shelves of the large refrigerator were gleaming… and almost completely bare. Miri gaped for a minute at the two lebens standing next to a small container, and then she raised her eyes to her sister.

“Right. Because slowly but surely, the competition increased. Open any advertising circular today, and you’ll see how many natural products are out there, for weight loss and migraines, fungus and warts…

And after all is said and done, Tatty is not a sales guy. The licensed institutes are much better at selling these things, and it robbed him of a lot of energy.

Plus, there were all of his expenses. He had to pay for the ingredients, and the lab for actually creating the brew according to his recipe. So when he saw that sales were steadily declining, he stopped ordering new batches. I don’t think he’s ordered anything for a few years already.”

“So how did Tatty and Mommy manage?” Tzippy repeated.

“We didn’t know, as children, to appreciate Mommy enough,” Miri murmured. “Look at how she ran our house. Some years, it was literally from nothing.

Do you remember the clothes she sewed for us? And the meals she used to cook… Go tell someone how to make chicken balls from wings. Cook the wings in boiling water so the bits of meat should be easy to take off the bone, pick it all off, and then grind it up. Use the boiling water to make delicious chicken soup. Which one of us kids was ever aware of how much effort Mommy put into making sure we’d never feel deprived?”

“I think it goes even farther than that!” Tzippy exclaimed. “Mommy herself never felt any lack; that’s the answer. And that’s why we also always felt good about the situation.”

“I don’t know if she never felt like she lacked for something.” Miri spoke slowly, shaking her head from side to side. “There may have been moments when it was hard for her. I’m sure there were. But I do think that she was very at peace with this way of life.” She rose from her seat and picked up Shmuely, making sure he hadn’t spit up on the elegant, perfect sofa or left behind any stains. Stains that might ruin the impressive, stable image that this house imprinted on the minds of all those who visited.

“I’ll help you look for a job, b’ezras Hashem,” she said, after a few seconds of silence. “Besides that, I don’t know if we have anything right now, but if I see that I do have some money that we can spare, would you want a loan?”

“I’ll ask Peretz,” Tzippy whispered. “I’m not sure he’ll want it. I’m not sure I want it, either. Like you said, there are lots of young couples in our situation, and they learn to manage. Or actually…” She looked around and smiled. “There aren’t lots of young couples in our situation.”

Miri left a few minutes later, pushing Shmuely’s carriage to the bus stop. They hadn’t yet bought a carriage of their own, but still, she felt very rich today, indeed.

U.S. and China Sign Phase I of New Trade Deal THE PULSE: President Donald Trump and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He signed “phase one” of a new trade deal. The new agreement covers a broad array of trade issues. It requires China to increase its purchases of American-made goods and agricultural products. It also includes commitments by China to crack down on patent theft and to open up its financial service markets to U.S. firms. Both countries agreed to refrain from manipulating currency exchange and interest rates that would artificially de-

value their currencies.

THE IMPACT: The signing of the “phase one” agreement is a win for President Trump. It shows that he has been able to wrest tangible commitments from China and that his campaign of exerting pressure on the communist nation has produced concrete results.

Many hailed the deal as a positive development for U.S. trade and expressed confidence that it will benefit the American consumer and economy.

However, some economists have expressed concern that the enforcement mechanisms that are integral to the deal are inadequate. China has a history of failing to fulfill its international commitments, and they feel that the agreement does not adequately address the enforcement angle. Furthermore, there is concern regarding the tariffs on Chinese imports that

still remain in place. According to Oxford Economics, the average tariff on Chinese imports is now 19.3%, up from just 3% before the trade war began. Tariffs are essentially a tax on U.S. consumers, and these tariffs will remain in effect until at least “phase two” of the trade deal is completed. Additionally, the agreement has caused concern among free-market advocates who dislike the provisions that require China to purchase U.S. goods. It is also possible that European countries that feel that such provisions put them at a disadvantage will challenge the deal by filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization.

Trump Administration Releases New Guidelines to Protect School Prayer in Public Schools THE PULSE: The Trump administration released new guidelines to promote and protect prayer in public schools. It also issued guidance to federal agencies instructing them to ease restrictions on federal funding of religious organizations and schools.

THE IMPACT: The new guidance issued on National Religious Freedom Day will undoubtedly help solidify Trump’s support from his conservative religious base.

Retaining energetic and robust support from his core supporters is an integral part of President Trump’s reelection strategy. The new guidance will be beneficial for religious organizations that are seeking funding from federal grants.

However, some religious organizations such as Agudath Israel of America have historically opposed efforts to increase school prayer in public schools. In its legislative agenda for the 97th Congress, Agudah resisted attempts to introduce voluntary school prayer in public schools. Agudah’s National Public Policy Paper expresses concern that “sensitive and impressionable children from minority faith backgrounds may feel unduly pressured to join their classmates in a religious exercise foreign to their own tradition.”

New Ukraine Disclosures Highly Problematic for Trump THE PULSE: Three new disclosures are creating problems for President Trump. In a wide-ranging interview, Lev Parnas, the now-indicted Rudy Giuliani associate, claimed that he was operating in Ukraine under the direct orders of President Trump.

He claimed that the president was fully aware of his actions and that the president was the moving force behind the campaign to pressure Ukrainian President Zelensky to publicly announce an investigation of the Bidens. He also released copies of handwritten notes and messages to back up his assertions. Furthermore, the non-partisan Government Accounting Office (GAO) concluded that the administration broke the law by withholding congressionally approved military aid to Ukraine. Lastly, the government in Kyiv announced that they were opening an investigation into the possibility that former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovich was unlawfully surveilled during her time as U.S. ambassador and possibly by elements that wanted her removed from her post.

THE IMPACT: These new developments will increase pressure on Republican Senators to hold a full impeachment trial and to call witnesses to testify.

On Sunday, South Carolina Republican Senator and staunch Trump ally Lindsey Graham conceded that a quick dismissal of impeachment charges by the Republican-controlled Senate was no longer a viable option. Republicans now find themselves in an undesirable situation. A speedy impeachment trial may be perceived as an attempted cover-up by the American public. A lengthy impeachment trial will likely result in harm to the president. In all likelihood, the impeachment trial will not result in Trump’s removal from office. However, the constant drip of negative news and the extended news cycle that focuses on the impeachment proceedings and alleged wrongdoings of the president may negatively affect Trump’s reelection prospects. According to FiveThirtyEight, national polling averages show that approximately 52% of Americans currently approve of the impeachment proceedings.

Instant Soup I’m a firm believer that soup should be cooked in a pot, but if the alternative is instant soup, this requires only slightly more work and is way more nutritious.

The only utensil needed for this soup is a can opener, as this soup is prepared in a pan in the oven. To decrease baking time, fully defrost veggies before you begin, and decrease cooking time by a half hour. And if you can spare those few minutes, slice three medium-sized zucchini and shred 3/4 of a pound of carrots instead of using frozen for a garden-fresh taste.

INGREDIENTS 1 cup sauteed onions 1 bag frozen sliced zucchini 1 (10 oz.) bag shredded carrots 1 (8 oz.) can mushroom pieces

This chicken is moist, flavorful and super-easy to prepare.

Back in my school days, “roite” rice, lovingly prepared by Mr. Einhorn, a”h, was a favorite on the school lunch menu. Nostalgia beckoned, and this dish was recreated.

INGREDIENTS 4 chicken cutlets ¼ cup flour 1 tsp. salt ½ tsp. paprika

1½ cups rice

⅛ tsp. black pepper

3 oz. oil

3 T. oil

4–5 oz. tomato sauce

1 T. lemon juice

3½ cups boiling water

½ cup sauteed onions

1 T. sugar

⅔ cup mini bowtie noodles 11 cups boiling water 1 T. salt Dash of white pepper

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line a deep 9x13” pan with parchment paper.

2. Place first four ingredients in the pan and bake for 1 hour.

3. Add rest of ingredients, increase the temperature to 400°, and bake for an additional 45 to 60 minutes.

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Cut each cutlet in half through the center to create eight thin cutlets.

2. Place flour, salt and spices in a parchment-lined 10x16” pan, and mix. Coat cutlets on both sides with flour mixture, and then lay cutlets in the pan.

3. Pour oil and lemon juice over cutlets. Top with sauteed onions. Cover tightly. Bake for 30 minutes.

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°.

Place all ingredients into a 6x9” pan.

2. Bake for 1 hour. Allow to cool for 5 to 10 minutes, and then fluff with a fork.

n today’s urbanized world, where once-rural places like Monsey are quickly shedding green space, Suzzane Lake remains a spot surrounded and inhabited by wildlife. In addition to deer and skunks, one can see all kinds of birds enjoying the lake, including ducks, seagulls, geese and swans.

A sign beside the lake warns residents not to feed the ducks and geese. A similar note is written in Yiddish below, but only the word “katchkes” (ducks) is present. No reference is made to geese (or genz in Yiddish).

This is not a “mistake,” but rather reflects a shift in today’s Yiddish that is unlike (and in fact more worrisome than) the myriad of other linguistic changes Yiddish is going through today. Ask many adults, even, and you will find that katchke has come to mean almost any kind of small bird, from chicks to chickens, roosters to geese, and swans. And it still means duck, too.

Yiddish is used to changes. Considering the language is estimated to be a thousand years old, it is not surprising that it has undergone plenty of transformations throughout the centuries. Most of these

changes have occurred together with geographical changes. Yiddish originates from the Rhineland in Germany, yet is most associated with Eastern Europe, where German Jewish refugees sought sanctuary following devastating expulsions and pogroms in the West. Together with our rich heritage, our ancestors brought our language with them to the East, displacing the lesser-known Jewish-Slavic language known from rabbinical sources as “Cannanic” that had been spoken by Yidden already living in Eastern Europe.

Like most languages in the world, Yiddish is not and never was a “pure” language. It has always incorporated words and grammar from other surrounding languages. The clearest example of this is the names of many fruits and vegetables.

While certain staples of our diet (onions, garlic, cabbage) retained their original

UPGRADING... names, many berries and other foods were called and then continued to be identified by the names used by our non-Jewish neighbors. In America, these Slavic and Hungarian words have been replaced by English words as a continuation of this tradition.

Grammar has shifted in a similar fashion, with the gender of words changing according to the nonJewish languages around us. For example, here in America, a shift from “dee, der, dus” to the universal “deh” in today’s Yiddish reflects the lack of gender for nouns and definite articles in English (which uses “the” universally). In Europe, we were surrounded by languages that have gendered nouns, whereas in America this is not the case. Another example of grammar changing is the shift from “Mir iz kalt” (I’m cold) to “Ich bin kalt” (formerly: I am cold-hearted; now: I’m cold). This also reflects the influence of the English standard word order.

While there remains a small group of preservationists dedicated to speaking a “pure” Yiddish, the natural linguistic shifts in grammar and vocabulary described above are less a sign of degradation than

adaptation and vitality. It’s against all odds that Yiddish is being spoken today throughout the world. So it is no wonder that it has adapted to be able to flourish.

“Katchke” is another story. By calling multiple animals that are not ducks “duck,” the language employed is failing to accurately describe the world around us. When we fail to be able to describe the world that we encounter every day, we limit ourselves and our children in their understanding and appreciation of everything the Eibishter has created.

Every language has a set of vocabulary that is very specific to a particular group or profession. This is often referred to as “jargon.” Coincidentally, Yiddish was also once referred to as a “jargon” by maskilic detractors of the language who viewed Yiddish as “corrupt.”

It is not expected of all speakers of a language to know the full vocabulary of a specific jargon. For example, English speakers who have nothing to do with sailboats wouldn’t be expected to use the correct jargon of sailing and use the terms “sheet,” “halyard,”

“jibe” and “tack” upon setting foot on a boat for the first time. In contrast, however, “ganz” and “shvan” are not part of a jargon — they are animals we encounter in Monsey almost every day.

Oversimplification of the language should not be confused with a language simply having fewer words. Yiddish, in fact, does have much fewer words than English, but it actually has more words than French. And no one says that the French language is lacking. That said, there are plenty of words that help to describe the world around us that have simply fallen out of use. Besides all of those various “katchkes” described above, another example is “dach” (roof). In today’s Yiddish there is no difference between roof (dach) and ceiling (traditionally stelyeh, sufit, belke or balkn). One can usually figure it out from context, but sometimes even this is difficult.

In addition to helping us express ourselves and interpret the world around us, Yiddish specifically serves those who speak it as a goldene keit that links us to previous generations and serves as a conduit to transmit our mesorah to future generations. Yet by simplifying our vocabulary, we are both losing our ability to understand and appreciate the Eibishter’s creations and putting our mesorah and Torah-learning at risk.

Today there is a plethora of Yiddish translations of holy texts that aid talmidim in their learning. We can find Yiddish mishnayos, even Gemaras. However, if one opens up these texts, he’ll find that many terms, specifically those that relate to flora and fauna and the general outdoors, aren’t translated into Yiddish.

A bachur might ask his rebbi, “What does that word mean?”

“Oh,” the rebbi might say, “something green that grows”.

Or, “What kind of bird is being discussed here?”

“Ver veist? Mistumeh ah katchke.”

Yiddish has always been an effective tool for protecting Yidden from outside non-Jewish influences.

If we do not take steps to counteract the oversimplification of the language, it will alienate us from our own world around us, our learning, and our understanding of the very mesorah we are trying to preserve and transmit.

In the hustle and bustle of urbanized Torahfocused lives, it’s easy to forget that the intention of and focus on the words we use do matter. Stopping to think about language is not bittul Torah, but davka farkert — something that can help promote self-confidence (“I have mastery over the language I speak; it serves me”) — and it can raise and elevate our observance and transmission of Torah knowledge.

The Satmar Rebbe, zt”l, referred to Yiddish as a “lashon kodesh.” As we all know, keeping something holy requires intention, practice and discipline. Let us be zoche to continue speaking a lashon kodesh and that it should continue to serve us in all of our pursuits.

Nestled deep in the vast Siberian forest, a city sits — its streets adorned with Yiddish signage, its main thoroughfare dubbed “Shalom Aleichem Street.”

Over in the town square, a menorah towers above the people, a testament to the Jewish nature of this town. Snippets of spoken Yiddish float through the air, for here, Mama Lashon lives.

And yet, in a twist of irony, it was Stalin — the despotic anti-Semite himself — who was largely the brains behind this city, the brains behind Birobidzhan.

The journey from Moskow on the Trans-Siberian Railroad is long and arduous, winding through the expansive Russian territories and passing through seven time zones before finally reaching the capital of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast: the city of Birobidzhan. For the modern traveler, landing in the Khabarovsk airport roughly 118 miles away circumvents much of the trip, but that final stretch is still recommended to be traveled by train.

“It’s very difficult to complete the trip by car,” Rabbi Yakov Hamer, the one who has clued me in to the existence of this Jewish gem, explains, describing the rough nature of the road. “It is especially recommended to not travel it at night; there are casualties every week.”

Perhaps this inaccessibility, even now, adds to the intrigue surrounding Birobidzhan. Certainly during the 1930s, when many thousands of Russian Yidden yearned to live

freely as Jews, the unknown held promise. When parts of the Russian Far East were specifically designated by Stalin to be a Jewish region, or oblast, it was precisely this faraway place that sparked their collective imagination, encouraging them to take the authorities at their word and leave everything behind to seek the promised better — and more openly Jewish — future in the wilds of Siberia. For days on end they traveled by rail, singing songs in great anticipation, full families and individuals alike who looked forward to a brighter tomorrow.

Few today would be naive enough to believe that Stalin’s intent in establishing the Jewish Autonomous Oblast came from purity of heart.

The speculations, in fact, vary from the government using the Yidden as a physical buffer between greater Russia and the Chinese border, which lies only a short distance from Birobidzhan, to Stalin’s desire to preserve “true communism” through the dedication of secular Yidden, who were known to be particularly ardent adherents to the communist ideals. The truth probably contains elements of both of these ideas, as well as a far more nefarious one: the all-out battle against Judaism.

The concept was brilliant, actually: Provide Yidden with a semblance of Jewish autonomy, of cultural

freedom — but subtly suck out the spirituality, leaving Yidden devoid of Yiddishkeit. To that end, one of the regional tongues of the oblast was designated as Yiddish, with Lashon Kodesh — the language of prayer and learning — being pushed to the wayside. A culture of Jewish pride, taking the form of Yiddish books, plays,

But before all of that could happen, the first pioneers had to build up the locale.

Soviet propaganda had created a fairytale-like image of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast to the point where

even Yidden from places such as America and Germany immigrated to Russia for the express purpose of joining in the building of this new Jewish land, but the reality stood in stark contrast to the displayed puppetry. When the first throngs of Yidden disembarked the Trans-Siberian Railroad in Birobidzhan, they were met with swampland, extreme temperatures with average winter lows of below -17 degrees Fahrenheit, and extreme humidity during the summer months.

Moreover, there was no infrastructure in place, and the new arrivals had to hurry and build their own homes from beams they found piled up. Being that few had craftsman experience, the work was especially tedious, and many of the homes were drafty due to poor workmanship. The conditions were so daunting that more than half of the new arrivals turned tail within six months and returned home,

ONE MITZVAH BRINGS ANOTHER Though it’s a first for Birobidzhan, it’s but one of 30 for Rabbi Avrum Shie Waldman.

Unlike most of us who will never have the chance to lay foundation stones for this fundamental mitzvah, Rabbi Waldman has been involved in helping communities build mikvaos for over 20 years. Though his first project was in Beit Shemesh, a Ukrainian community reached out to Rabbi Waldman for help with their project, and after that, one mitzvah brought another... Most of the kehillos that have contacted the Mikvah Tahara Association so far have been on the European continent, with communities in Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Germany, France, Cyprus, Malta, and Croatia having received their help. Outside of the European continent, the Association has also been blessed to help a Costa Rican community build a mikvah, and has hopes of supporting many other communities as they build their own.

“We focus on helping kehillos build mikvaos that are kosher according to all shitos,”

In an interesting twist, Rabbi Hamer tells me that the mashgiach sent to Birobidzhan was able to give a class to the local community in his own mother tongue of Yiddish.

Despite Comrade Stalin’s intentions, Yiddish is serving as a bridge to Yiddishkeit, right there in Birobidzhan!

Of course, even the Far Eastern regions of Russia were not immune to the claws of the Kremlin, and the oblast was hit hard by Stalin’s “purges” in the late ‘30s, and again post-Holocaust, after the community had burgeoned with the influx of survivors. At its peak, the Jewish population made up nearly a quarter of the population, with about 50,000 neshamos; now it is home to a meager few thousand, almost all of them still missing out on the beauty of Yiddishkeit.

But Rabbi Eliyahu Riss, Chabad shaliach to Birobidzhan, is attempting to change that.

My contact, Rabbi Yakov Hamer, director of the Mikvah Tahara Association, tells me that Rabbi Riss had been born in Birobidzhan and was inspired by the previous shaliach to become shomer Torah u’mitzvos. He moved to Eretz Yisroel, but then returned seven years ago, after he married, to take over the reins. Rabbi Hamer, himself, learned of Birobidzhan when the Chief Rabbi of Russia, the renowned Rabbi Berel Lazar, personally called and asked the Association to take part in building a mikvah in Birobidzhan.

“Usually Rabbi Lazar will instruct individual kehillos to call us to ask for partnership, but Rabbi Lazar actually

directly called myself and Rabbi Waldman, our founder, explaining that everyone in Russia knows of Birobidzhan’s history, and that this was a very important project that would have a massive impact on Yidden all over the country. Rabbi Lazar took upon himself to raise roughly a third of the funds needed, the shaliach raised about a third, following our guidance, and we actively fundraised the remaining third.”

“All of the mikvaos we build come from funds that Klal Yisroel provides, giving each donor a share in the mitzvah. Because of this, donations are always accepted and greatly appreciated.”

Through the dedication of Rabbi Lazar and Rabbi Riss, together with the Association, December 26, 2019 — just a few weeks ago — went down in history as the day a mikvah was filled for the first time in a city that has historically been home to many thousands of Yidden.

As we speak of this victory, Rabbi Hamer pulls out a calling card and makes a conference call to Rabbi Riss, who, despite the 15-hour time difference, patiently answers my questions about life in current-day Birobidzhan.

“Do you experience any anti-Semitism?” I ask.

“On the contrary,” he tells me, mentioning that there was once a satirical cartoon published about the Jewish community that created an uproar, causing non-Jews to approach the mayor (who, by the way, has Yiddish on his letterhead!) and insist that some sort of punitive action be taken.

When I ask him if he is capable of hosting guests who would like to experience Birobidzhan for themselves, he tells me that a new fleishig restaurant has just opened, and that he has sleeping arrangements and even an auditorium available for use.

“Is there anything that visitors can bring that would help the community?” I inquire, to which Rabbi Riss responds that Birobidzhan is not a rich community by any standards and that any funding he receives comes from outside the city and, usually, the country. “American dollars are always appreciated to help fund the many projects,” he says, explaining that over the last seven years, the ruble has dramatically fallen in worth when compared to the dollar, meaning that every dollar allows them to accomplish so much more than it ever would have before. A little research corroborates what Rabbi Riss says; with an average monthly income

of under $400, the typical Birobidzhan citizen doesn’t have much to their name. But heritage they do have, and the Yidden there are beginning to seek it.

Dr. Debra Caplan, when sharing her memories of Birobidzhan, said, “There were buildings that had beautiful, beautiful fronts, but if you walked around the corner, you’d see that the rest of the building wasn’t there; the front was just a facade!”

This may just be the perfect metaphor for Birobidzhan, for though the Yiddish culture of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast had its own unique beauty, it was missing the most important part: its structure. Until now, the culture of Yiddish was just a pleasant facade, but times are changing that.

“There are still areas that are missing their structure,” Rabbi Riss tells me, referring to the buildings mentioned by Dr. Caplan. “But that’s mostly changed.”

And I know that just as buildings can be built up around their facade, Yiddishkeit can be built around the culture of the Yiddish language, as well. Because despite its exquisite beauty, Yiddish is only a facade when Yiddishkeit is out of the picture. With the Risses at the helm and the sparks awakening in the townspeople, the future of the region looks bright. Soon now, I suspect, Birobidzhan will truly become a complete “building” — from every angle.

You’re good with words. And you’re always up for a challenge. Would these qualities support a career as an interpreter? Is there even a market for your skills? Does it pay well? And what exactly does an interpreter do, anyway?

As of 2018, there were 57,140 people in the United States who were officially employed as interpreters or translators.

Okay, so wait a minute. First let’s clarify: What’s the difference between an interpreter and a translator? Are they even the same thing?

Well, yes and no. They both translate from one language to another, but an interpreter translates orally, when someone is speaking, and a translator translates the written word. So the person who rewrote your favorite Artscroll biography in English? He’s a translator. The guy who speaks in English while the representative from Dubai is making a presentation at the U.N.? Interpreter.

Both careers are challenging and require excellent linguistic skills. But while a translator has the luxury of sitting at his desk and poring over a dictionary or reference manual when necessary, an interpreter must perform instantly, often in a public setting, and needs to be highly skilled in active listening and critical thinking. In other words, it’s not a job for the faint of heart.

Here’s what interpreter Brittany Charles has to say about it: “We interpreters must not only keep our language skills sharp, but also our mental agility. Interpreters must be able to think on their feet, react quickly to new situations, come up with solutions and implement them.” In short, she says, “a day in the life of an interpreter can be summed up in one word — hectic.”

Despite the fact that it’s a highly responsible position, interpreters need only to acquire a bachelor’s degree in order to get started. There is also a variety of interpreter training courses available that, when successfully completed, can lead to certification. But it seems that certification isn’t an absolute requirement. And while testing and training are always a good idea to hone one’s skills, in the end it’s the language skills, grace under pressure, quick thinking and focused concentration that will determine who can handle this as a career path.

And what about the money? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for interpreters in 2018 was $49,930, or $24 an hour.

Consecutive vs.

Simultaneous Interpreting If you’ve ever seen a General Assembly session at the U.N. — or if you’ve attended the recent Siyum HaShas — then chances are you are familiar with interpreters in real time. As it turns out, there are really two distinct types of interpreting: consecutive and simultaneous.

What’s the difference between the two?

Consecutive interpreters will translate verbally what the speaker is saying only after the speaker pauses. At a business meeting between an American manufacturer and a Chinese supplier, the interpreters will sit alongside the speak-

Siyum interpreters were hard at work during the event, translating the program into Hebrew, Russian, Spanish, French, English (during the Yiddish presentations) and Yiddish. Imagine that!

We are told that these interpreters were handed transcripts of the speeches before the Siyum so they could be prepared for their challenging task. But, of course, many of the presenters didn’t stick to the script, and the interpreters had to be alert, attentive and super-focused for hours!

Not an easy job. But what a tremendous zechus to be interpreting at that massive and unprecedented celebration of Torah!

When the speaker pauses, they will translate his words accurately and succinctly.

A consecutive interpreter will display no emotion when translating, even if the speaker does. He will speak in the first person, essentially becoming the “voice” of the speaker. And he will carry a notebook and pencil, ready to take notes on what he will be translating, especially when the speaker forgets to pause (yikes!) and goes on and on until somebody reminds him to stop.

A consecutive interpreter can work in a private setting or in public. He may be standing on stage in front of hundreds of listeners at an international forum, or he may be employed at a hospital, as a conduit between doctors and foreign patients. He may be working in a courtroom setting, translating a new immigrant’s testimony to an American judge and jury, or he may be working in the military, assisting in interrogations of captured enemies.

Needless to say, in all of these cases, the interpreter’s work is crucial, and messing up is not an option.

What can go wrong? Plenty. Even highly experienced interpreters have had moments of crisis, and not just because they discovered a ketchup stain on their shirt before appearing in front of a large audience.

Lydia Machova, an interpreter who is also a lecturer, talks about handling a crisis situation. What do you do if the speaker is not talking directly into

the microphone and you can’t hear what he’s saying? (“Just say the truth: ‘I cannot interpret because the speaker isn’t speaking into the microphone.’”) What if the speaker uses an unfamiliar word? (“A responsible interpreter will familiarize herself ahead of time with the subject matter she will be translating, be it medical terminology, le-

galese, political processes, etc. It’s part of the job.”)

And what if the speaker attempts to make a joke that would poorly translate into another language and isn’t really funny? In an article for the BBC about interpreters, Geoff Watts writes, “Puns, sarcasm, irony and culture-specific jokes are an interpreter’s nightmare.” (Accord-

ing to Machova, the interpreter can actually say: “Mr. X just made a joke.

Please be so kind as to laugh.”)

So it’s a pretty intense career choice, after all. And yet, the ultimate challenge for a polished and professional interpreter is undoubtedly simultaneous interpreting. And yes, that’s exactly what it sounds like; a simultaneous inter-

It Started at Nuremberg During the infamous Nuremburg trials of 1945, the horrors of the Holocaust unfolded on the public stage. The trials will be remembered as a pivotal event in world history, during which an International Military Tribunal, which included judges from four countries, presided over the hearings of 22 high-ranking Nazi criminals and decided their fate.

The Nuremberg trials were also historical in that it was when simultaneous interpretation was introduced; until then, consecutive interpretation was typically used. But the trials required a faster, more-immediate interpreting technique where the ghastly testimonies could be heard in several languages accurately and in real time.

It was a tall order, but U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Leon Dostert rose to the challenge. He developed the necessary microphones and headsets, and then he hired and trained a crew of 36 interpreters who worked together in teams, broadcasting the proceedings in several languages at the same time. Dostert didn’t have tape recorders or digital technology, but his innovation set the standards for simultaneous interpreting until today.

Austrian-born Siegfried Ramler was one of the interpreters during the trials, and he lectures about it until today. Ramler is Jewish and was fourteen years old when he escaped on a Kindertransport to England.

Years later, he put his multilingualism to good use in Nuremberg.

Now in his nineties, Ramler is often asked what it was like to be interpreting the horrors of the Holocaust. How did he react to the stories of unprecedented war crimes? But he says he was too focused on the linguistics to properly process the impact of what was taking place.

“The things we saw were shocking,” he said, “but they could not be translated into feelings because we were not in a position to feel one way or another.”

Years later, Ramler says, the feelings eventually emerged. But at the trial itself, he and his colleagues remained disciplined and composed.

“We were there to interpret,” he said. And that’s what they did.

that simultaneous interpreters usually work in pairs. They interpret for twenty or thirty minutes until fatigue or burnout inevitably sets in. When that happens, the second interpreter takes over for the next half hour.

Simultaneous interpreters, says Machova, must concentrate on two things at the same time: listening to the speaker and listening to themselves.

They can’t space out for even a moment or lose their train of thought. They have to remain coherent and articulate even while listening, deciphering and processing what the speaker is saying next. Simultaneous interpreters will sit in soundproof booths (like at the U.N.) and wear earphones covering only one ear while listening to themselves with the other ear.

It takes years of practice to get it right.

According to Watts, “The

world’s most powerful computers can’t perform accurate real-time interpreting of one language to another. Yet human interpreters do it with ease.”

Well, maybe not with ease, exactly. Watts writes that “the process requires an extraordinary blend of sensory, motor and cognitive skills, all of which have to operate in unison.” This has to be done “in real time, without asking the speaker to slow down or clarify anything. ... Executing it require[s] versatility and nuance beyond the reach of the

most powerful computers.”

In fact, neuroscientists are studying the thought processes of simultaneous interpreters, fascinated by how different areas of the brain work in unison, allowing the interpreter to focus on so much at the same time.

But we digress. The bottom line is that interpreting, despite its difficulty, is a burgeoning field that is here to stay. And as the globalization of markets, economies, political systems and health industries continue to grow, it will become more

important than ever.

And those who are in it are passionate about what they do.

“This is the best job in the world for a nerd like me,” says Katty Kauffman, professional interpreter.

“I get paid to go to the best conferences and state-of-the-art events.”

And Barry Olsen, conference interpreter, adds: “This job is important because it’s what makes communication possible between countries and between people. I’ve been at it for twenty-five years, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

Recap: Menachem and Leah visit a financial coach. They agree to lock up their credit cards, take inventory of their assets (none) and debts ($33,242), and plan to use the snowball strategy for paying it off.

Leah: Budgeting is so important. It puts our goals, plans and needs into numbers. I thought making a budget would mean spending even less than I already was, but it turns out that our coach made us plan for things like babysitting and even a small allowance so that I have some pocket money (yay!). We did cut some things, like most of Menachem’s sesame chicken (yes!) and some subscriptions, but those are things we don’t mind letting go of. Things feel so organized now, so possible.

Now we know how much we really need to live on. We know how much is actually coming in, and what gap we need to fill. It doesn’t seem so out-of-reach anymore.

We also discussed priorities. Our coach says that the first things that need to be covered each month are food, shelter and transportation, and phones. Those are our basics.

We are usually super-careful about paying tuition on time, but our rav told us we should use our maaser for that while we’re in debt.

Next on my list is the cleaning help, because I really can’t manage without her. I’m glad I don’t have to give her up. I’d sooner eat less!

Coach’s Take • Budgeting helps people in all financial situations be in control of their hard-earned money.

• Anyone in debt should be on a tight budget until they’re out of this rut. Those who aren’t in debt can afford to go easier, though budgeting will help them achieve their financial goals.

Menachem: After we met last week, our coach pointed out that we needed to plan for a higher income. Within a couple of days I landed two new jobs, plus one on the side.

I now work in a restaurant from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m., and at a retail job from 12 to 7 p.m.. The hours are really long, and I'm not used to waking up before 6 in the morning, but I know it's only temporary. Once we're out of debt, I'll hopefully be able to cut hours.

I also do an extra shift on Motzei Shabbos for my first boss at his candy shop.

Friday and Sunday are his busiest days, so on Motzei Shabbos I help him make order out of Friday's chaos and set up for Sunday.

I gave up my job in sales; it just wasn’t covering and I needed the change. The biggest thing that was keeping me at my job was my fear of what people would say if I quit so fast; everyone knew I was working hard, and I kept assuring them that I was going to make it. But putting everything down on paper gave me so much clarity, and I was able to muster up the courage to put my family’s needs ahead of everyone else’s opinions.

Coach’s Take When planning the budget, if the income still doesn’t match the expenses: • Get out of debt fast! Dragging out the process will exhaust you before you actually get to do it. So for the short (or however long) time period, cut down on all extra expenses so you can throw all the money you have at the debt and be done with it as quickly as possible!

• Before making purchases, ask yourself, “Is it a need or a want?” Buy the needs, and the money that you save by not buying those wants can go directly toward paying off those lenders that you so desperately want to be free of. And remember that this is temporary, only until your debt is gone; nobody can live without wants forever. For now, keep in mind that cutting back today will help you live with more freedom tomorrow.

• Budgeting isn’t easy at first. It can take around three months until you get the hang of figuring out how to plan, track and organize your money, and until you can accurately predict how much money you’ll need for different categories each month. Keep going until you get it.

• Budgeting doesn’t have to feel like choking. A budget is simply a map that tells you where your money is going before you wonder where it went. Yes, if you’re

in debt you might need to separate your needs from your wants, but that’s only for the short term.

• Go through your credit card statements and look for automatic payments and subscriptions. Oftentimes, people don’t even realize that they’re still signed up for something they don’t even use anymore! One of our clients discovered that he had two Amazon Prime accounts, and he was paying for both!

• If you discover that you’re paying for a service you didn’t use in a while, try to call the company. They are often eager to please and may offer at least a partial refund.

• Same goes for your bank on late payment or overdraft fees. Try calling and asking for grace. You’ve got nothing to lose by trying, and $35 to gain!

• If you need more income, put your pride aside and take a side job to close the gap. Take an example from Menachem — there’s nothing fun or glamorous about going out on Motzei Shabbos to schlep boxes in a store, but it pays the bills! So do what you need to do, and not what everyone else thinks is cool. Their opinions don’t feed your family.

There’s a shortage of $271. It’s not an income problem, because Menachem and Leah are paying double rent this month.

To balance it out, it seems both Menachem and Leah will have to give up their allowances for this month. (It would’ve been amazing if Menachem would be willing to spend less on cigarettes, but it won’t realistically happen at this point.)

The rest of the gap will be bridged by doing without the vitamins and trying to cut the budget for gas and tolls by not traveling long-distance this month.

“Vocabugap” is a term coined by William Safire, famous author and presidential speech writer, for filler words that are borrowed from other languages when the native tongue fails to adequately express an idea.

Yiddish is replete with delightfully useful vocabugaps! After all, juicy can never compete with zaftig, worthless doesn’t sound nearly as valueless as bubkes, crazy isn’t as descriptive as meshugah, and there isn’t any other way of saying that some things just don’t feel “kosher.”

The English lexicon has long been known to adopt words from all cultures and languages, making the English language one that is forever growing. Is it any wonder that many Yiddish words have made their way over?

Many foods have made it onto American menus — and into American vernacular. At the start of the 20th century we got blintz (1903), bagel (1908) and knish (1916). Incidentally, schnitzel, assumed to be quintessentially Yiddish in origin, actually originates from German — and has been used in English ever since 1854!

Beyond our specialty dishes, our people are famous for our spunky personalities, or chutzpah (1867). We don’t complain, we kvetch (1952).

We aren’t merely proud, we kvell (1920), and we don’t just get impatient, we plotz!

Some words don’t even have English translations, which is probably why the English speakers borrowed the word in the first place.

One of those words would be megillah. We’re familiar with the term for when the story is quite long, but apparently, Americans are quite fond of this definition when the entire production or proceedings are somewhat dragged out.

Schtick is used to describe a specific person’s style or frequent activity, though it is most commonly referred to a comic routine.

There are more words with the sch- start that will sound very familiar to the Yiddish speaker, who might be pleased — or appalled — to learn that these have made it into the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.

In the English language, it is in fact not transliteration to schlep bags or to complain about the schlep. There’s something onomatopoeic about the word. Somehow a schlep actually sounds like a hassle.

We’ve also taken to adding schmaltz to our material, though this isn’t about chicken fat. Schmaltzy writing or word choices are rather overtly sentimental.

And speaking of food-related words, because we do love our food, there’s also schmear. Though this word can refer to a slather of cream cheese, to the nonYiddish speaker it also means “the entire spiel,” as in “the whole schmear.” (And, yeah, spiel is English too, though they never use it to describe play.)

In Yiddish, schmooze is as much a noun as a verb, but for the English speaker, since 1888 schmooze has been a charming verb.

To be fair, neither “shooting the breeze” nor “engaging in chit-chat” sound nearly as elaborate and in-depth as schmoozing.

Not As They Seem

Then there are Yiddish words that you might have forgotten or their origins have gone unrecognized.

In computer lingo, glitch (1958) is used to describe a minor malfunction, or snag, usually of the electronic variety. This recent addition to the English language still resembles the Yiddish verb of the same pronunciation, which means to slide. Lest you fail to see the connection, remember that colloquially, glitch does mean to slip off-track.

With Yiddish words being predominantly from Germanic origin, there are words in our English dictionaries that might sound organically Yiddish to the native Yiddish speakers, but are, in fact, of German origin: words like angst, kindergarten and wunderkind. While the vast majority of Yiddish words snuck into the English language later in the 20th century, angst first came to English with Sigmund Freud at around 1910. Kindergarten was coined in Germany in 1837, but was adopted on American shores as early as 1852.

With Yidden rising in profile in all industries, we’ve resorted to our own word choices to describe some of the more entertaining personalities we come across.

In business, what with all the gelt dealing, there is likely to be the occasional encounter with a ganef (1839). There’s also the authoritative maven (1950), the meshuggener (1900), the gossiping yenta (1923), the foolish golem (1897), and of course, the klutz (1959).

To the Yiddish speaker, the latter could be used as a verb describing extreme boredom, but in English it is solely used to describe a clumsy person.

Merriam-Webster has also welcomed the schlub, schlemiel, schlimazel and nudnik.

The Yiddish that we are most familiar with might have been cobbled together from a variety of languages, influenced by locale and circumstance, but for all of its cholent-like properties, the Yiddish language has given the dictionary perhaps as much as it has taken.

Lashon Hakodesh’s Contributions The English language has borrowed from Lashon Kodesh, as well, and considering the circumstances, that is rather sad. We can see this in the 50-year yovel, which has been corrupted and is now used as jubilee for any major anniversary, and in how readily we use the word cherubic, taken from the keruvim.

For a more entertaining word we have behemoth, which generally describes any oversized creation, but is actually derived from beheimos, the plural of beheimah.

By far, the most entertaining is the English word that arrived on the scene without a specific origin: Brouhaha is generally used to describe a fuss, an uproar, as when one is greeted by a brouhaha. To those in the know, it sounds an awful lot like a baruch haba!
