SERVICE AT THE STORES Thank you to The Monsey View for providing us with an excellent, helpful publication. I am amazed that you are always able to come up with new, appropriate and interesting topics to write about. A special shout-out for the weekly dvar Torah, which is beautiful and always has a practical takeaway. I would like to use this forum to thank all of the local businesses for the effort that went into enhancing our yom tov shopping experience. The grocery stores, clothing stores, shoe stores etc., really have a tremendous job in serving all of our needs, and I really appreciate all that went into figuring it out — the planning, late hours, constantly restocking of merchandise — and it was all done with such pleasant service ‎Thank you very much, and I wish everyone a wonderful year! (Re: The Meats on Your Menu, Issue 216) Thank you for making my yom tov planning a no-brainer. I tried all three meat recipes featured in The Monsey View, and they made for great yom tov and Chol Hamoed meals! Especially mouthwatering and impressive was the club steak tower. I actually served the club steak and the mushroom-chicken on two separate occasions, since my family isn’t that big on protein, and each was a hit! Suri W.

STILL INSPIRED (Re: The Key to All Good, Issue 196) The Birchas Hamazon article by T. Gestetner that you featured some time ago was truly inspiring and was shared and enjoyed at our Shabbos table. This powerful feature gave bentching a whole new meaning! It may be something worth publishing again as with the Shabbos–yom tov schedule, we have the golden opportunity to bentch countless times. I’d really appreciate if you can send me another copy of that article so I can share the inspiration. G.H.

Hashem Elokim al ha’adam…’ It does not say el ha’adam, but al ha’adam. The Tiferes Shlomo points out that by stating al ha’Adam, it means that our ability to restrain ourselves is the essence of what it means to be a person.” Rabbi Hershkowitz turned to Reuven. “But holding back is not easy, is it Reuven?” “No, Rebbi. At least not for me,” laughed Reuven, and the other boys laughed along as well. “The yetzer hara is very strong for all of us,” agreed Rabbi Hershkowitz. “But nobody has to fight this battle alone. R’ Yitzchok Radviller states that when a person knows that he cannot stand against the yetzer hara alone, and he cries out to Hashem for help, Hashem will help. Hashem will always answer our cries for help. “So here is your prize, Reuven,” stated Rabbi Hershkowitz. “You deserve it.” Holding ourselves back from temptation is very difficult. The temptations in this world are so numerous and so appealing. It may seem that restraining ourselves is “torture,” but in reality, this is why we were created. The very first challenge given to man in this world was to say no to temptation. Every time we hold ourselves back from doing something we should not do, we are fulfilling our purpose in this world, and we are helping repair the cheit of Adam Harishon. It may not be easy, but we do not have to go it alone. We need only cry out to our Father, and He will surely help.

Chol Hamoed Nor’Easter Flattens Sukkahs, Takes Out Power An early-fall storm, packing winds of nearly 50 miles per hour, tore through our area last Wednesday and Thursday, uprooting trees and leaving many scrambling as their sukkahs were heavily damaged or completely destroyed. Power outages dotted the area in Pomona, New Hempstead and Wesley Hills, and two outages left Wesley Kosher without power for several hours. The supermarket remained open for business, with emergency generators offering limited power and cash checkouts only. The store’s fresh fish was kept on ice and its meats were stored in a refrigerated truck while the deli department closed for the day because of the electrical issues. Monsey wasn’t the only community hit hard by the storm, with sukkahs in Boro Park and Lakewood destroyed by wind gusts that were reportedly as high as

65 miles per hour in Brooklyn. A group was set up to match up those who needed help fixing their sukkahs with volunteers able to assist with the repairs. Two hundred miles to the south, in Baltimore, high winds were equally problematic. “My niece’s sukkah was pushed by the wind into her neighbor’s backyard,” said Jeff Cohn of Baltimore Jewish Life. Cohn thought that he had escaped the winds when his own sukkah withstood the gusts while another located just yards away was flattened, but hours later, the winds came back with a vengeance, wreaking havoc on Cohn’s sukkah as well. According to ABC News, the storm formed off the New Jersey coast, evolving on Wednesday night into what is known as a bomb cyclone, with air pressure falling 24 millibars in less than 24 hours. Widespread power outages swept the greater New York area, with nearly 90,000 people losing power on Long Island and in Connecticut. Locally, several thousand customers reported outages in Rockland County, with over 500 left in the dark in Orange and Sullivan counties.

In Surprise Move, Nita Lowey Announces End of LongTerm Congressional Career After a Washington, D.C., career spanning 31 years, Congresswoman Nita Lowey had chosen not to seek reelection in the 2020 political races. Lowey, who represents all of Rockland County, made the surprise announcement on October 10. The first woman to head the powerful House Appropriations Committee, chairwoman of a State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee and a member of the Select Intelligence Oversight Panel, Lowey has been a staunch ally of the Jewish community for many years. The first New Yorker to chair the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Lowey was instrumental in securing federal aid after Hurricane Sandy devastated the greater New York area in 2012. Her many accomplishments during her congressional career include authoring legislation toughening drunk driving laws and requiring allergy information to be included on food labels. Lowey will continue to serve through the end of 2020 and vowed to work as diligently as ever on behalf of her constituents, categorizing her time in Congress as an “honor” and a “privilege.” A resident of Westchester County, 82-year-old Lowey was facing her first party primary since 1988, reported The Journal News, a situation that she insisted had nothing to do with her recent announcement. “To me, I made this decision because it was good for me, my family and the future,” said Lowey. The 16-term congresswoman had been serving as assistant secretary of state in Albany for over a decade when she was first elected in 1988 to represent the Bronx and Manhattan. Over time, the lines of the area served by Lowey and her district’s number changed several times, shifting north in 2013 to cover all of Rockland County and parts of Westchester as the 17th Congressional District. Lowey and her husband Stephen have been married for more than 50 years and have three children and eight grandchildren.

Jewish Community Honors Fallen Cop as NYPD Funeral Passes Through Monsey It was just a few hours before licht bentching, but dozens of Monsey residents were among the hundreds of people lining Route 59 to pay their respects to a fallen NYPD officer on October 4. Thirty-three-year-old Officer Brian Mulkeen died on September 29 while attempting to subdue an armed

man in the Bronx, reported The Journal News. His funeral was held five days later in his hometown of Monroe, with approximately 100 Kiryas Joel residents and members of Kiryas Joel Hatzolah and Kiryas Joel Public Safety standing along the funeral route to honor Officer Mulkeen. The motorcade consisted of well over 200 NYPD officers on motorcycles and dozens of cars, buses and other official vehicles. Heading south from Monroe onto the New York State Thruway and into Monsey, the procession made its way to Saddle River, New Jersey, where the six-year veteran of the NYPD was laid to rest. Airmont Road, Route 59, New County Road and Saddle River Road were all closed as the motorcade passed through, with members of the Monsey-area Jewish community standing solemnly on the side of the road. A truck parked at the edge of a Tallman shopping center bore a ten-foot black banner with the NYPD insignia and the words “The Jewish community mourns the loss of officer Brian Mulkeen and offers its deepest condolences to his family and the entire NYPD.” Dozens of Jewish children lined the sides of the road, waving small American flags as a sign of respect. Rabbi Yisroel Kahan of Oizrim said that he and his volunteers scoured local stores, buying every flag they could find and spreading word about the funeral, ensuring that local residents understood the significance of the somber event and could express their support and appreciation to Mulkeen’s family and the NYPD.

“Mazel tov, Ulush!” Tessa Lieber kissed her on both cheeks. “Show her to me! Oh, she’s so adorable and chubby!” “Yes…” Ulush Cohen smiled, and gazed at her two-day-old daughter who was sleeping in the cradle by her bed. “When are you coming back?” “Four more days, I think, if everything is all right.” “Everything is all right, yes?” Tessa studied her face closely. “I hope so.” “Because you look like something is not.” Ulush burst into tears again, which she’d been doing a lot lately. “I didn’t manage to see Edo before he left.” “Left?” “Yes, the orphanage suddenly received certificates, and they decided that since Edo is in danger, he would join the others heading to Eretz Yisroel. He left yesterday. Janek tried to arrange for him to visit, but it wasn’t possible.”

“Don’t worry, in another few months you’ll also get to Eretz Yisroel, b’ezras Hashem, and you’ll meet him there.” “First of all, I’m not so sure we’ll be able to leave. It’s becoming more complicated from week to week. And besides, what will be with him until then?” “There’s Someone Who is worrying about him more than you, Ulush, dear.” Tessa pulled over a chair and sat down, remembering belatedly to lower her voice. Besides Ulush, there were six other women lying in beds in the room. Ulush nodded and wiped her tears with her sleeve. “I brought you food.” Tessa reverted back to her usual, practical self. “Hot soup and steamed cabbage.” She glanced around. “How are you roommates? Are they all Jewish?” “They seem to be,” Ulush whispered in response. “I don’t think other women would come to a Jewish hospital.” “So, have you become friendly with

them?” “A little. Most of the time we are all busy.” A smile lit up her weary eyes. “With our babies. Or we’re sleeping.” “You really do need to sleep a lot,” Tessa cautioned, as though she’d suddenly recalled this important detail. “I’m leaving now, and you try to sleep. But before that, I want you to eat. Oh, and I just remembered — your husband will be coming at seven, and he asked if you can wait for him in the corridor.” “Sure,” Ulush said. But seven o’clock came, and Janek didn’t. Ulush stood with the baby in her arms, waiting next to her room. A minute passed, then two, and then ten and fifteen, and still there was no sign of Janek. The lights in the room behind her were already off, and she started to feel shaky. She looked around, hoping to find an abandoned chair to sit on, but the corridor was empty. Just when she’d come to the conclusion that Janek had not been able to get there, and that there was no point in waiting endlessly for him on her feet, she saw her husband. His face was red as he hurried in her direction. “Oy, I’m so sorry. You waited a long time for me,” he said guiltily. “And with the baby in your arms!” “It’s all right.” She smiled weakly. “No, go inside and put her down in the cradle,” he suggested. “She’s sleeping anyway.” Ulush didn’t object. When she returned to the corridor, she saw Janek standing and staring at the pale yellow wall. “He’s here,” he said quietly. “I found him in the pediatric ward.” “Who?” “Gustav. They found him a week ago, lying in the street. He has a bad case of pneumonia. He’s in… quite serious condition.” “Gustav?!” If Ulush’s legs had been trembling before, now they totally buckled under her. She gripped the wall. “Where is he? I’d like to see him!” “You’re going to your bed now,” her husband objected. “You won’t be allowed in to the ward now anyway.

56 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

I had to sneak in there. Tomorrow I’ll try to come back, and if they let me in, I’ll call you to join me.” But Ulush was insistent. “Why won’t they let me in?” “Because, think about it: What are you to him?” her husband whispered back. “As far as they are concerned, he is a street child, although the one who found him was a Jew. He realized that it was a Jewish child, so he brought him to this hospital, but they don’t know anything about him. The children’s ward here is very well guarded; they don’t let just any person in. Tomorrow I want to come with Rabbi Walkin and a few documents that will show that the child has a connection to us.” “Us?” “The Jewish community. I’m not going to say he was in our house, in case the police link him to the abduction from the other orphanage. Not all of the staff here is Jewish, so we can’t trust everyone. Fine, let’s talk tomorrow,” he said. “Go to sleep. Good night!” “Good night,” she murmured, and plodded heavily into the room. One of her roommates shifted in her bed, while another breathed heavily as she slept. Ulush sat down, fingering the edge of her thick blanket. Poor Gustav. What had happened to him? Why had he run away, and where had he been planning to go? Too bad she hadn’t asked Janek what exactly “a week ago” meant. Was it the day after they left their house? Two days? Who was with him now? Was he lying there alone, or had those people from the Christian place tracked him down and come to the Jewish hospital to make sure he didn’t slip away from them again? She breathed slowly and then pulled the cover over herself. Soon the baby would wake up and want to eat, and she hadn’t yet slept to regain some of her strength. She hadn’t even said Krias Shema. Three whole hours later, a little wail woke her up. Twenty minutes after that, the baby fell back asleep, but Ulush was not able to do the same.

She lay in bed, gazing at the ceiling, and thought about Gustav lying somewhere in one of the wards above her. Or was it below her? Where was the pediatric ward? She wouldn’t even know where to find him. Somehow, she found herself softly stroking the feathery head in the cradle beside her, and then she slid her feet into her slippers and padded out of the room. She almost bumped into a short nurse who was striding down the corridor carrying a wooden tray with a few vials of tightly capped medications. “You need to sleep now,” she told Ulush sternly, as though Ulush was a fiveyear-old. “Why are you walking around at this hour?” “I can’t sleep,” the younger woman said, and fixed her gaze on one of the glass vials at the edge of the tray. “Maybe if I do something I’ll be tired enough to fall asleep. Can I help you?” “No,” was all the nurse responded. “Go to your room.” As she finished her sentence, the vial landed on the gleaming floor. A small clear puddle began to spread. “Pffftt!” the nurse exclaimed, glaring at Ulush as though she had taken the vial, hurled it to the floor, and shattered it into a million pieces. “Go bring a broom! And a rag.” “Where from?” Ulush asked meekly. “From the room behind my desk.” The nurse continued walking and entered one of the rooms. Ulush hurried forward to the desk in the corner of the corridor. She entered the small room behind it and easily found a broom and a floor rag. “Good,” she heard the nurse’s voice behind her bent back. “Wipe up the whole mess so that no one slips.” Was she just imagining that she heard the nurse hissing an antiSemitic word? Perhaps, and perhaps not. In silence and with great effort, Ulush finished cleaning up the spill and the shards of glass, feeling the exhaustion spread through her every limb as she did so. She rose once the floor was gleaming again, and leaned on the

wall for a few seconds to recover. Then she dragged herself to the nearest garbage and shook the rag over it so all the shards tumbled inside. One more deep breath, and she went back to the little room. The nurse was already seated behind her desk, drinking a cup of tea. “You cleaned it up?” she asked. “Yes,” Ulush said, returning the broom and rag to the room. As she headed back out again, the nurse glanced at her. “You’re a bit pale,” she said. “Do you feel okay?” “Yes.” Ulush remained standing near the desk. “Good. So what do you want now?” “Do you need any more help?” Ulush asked with a smile that she hoped would banish her pallor; otherwise the nurse would not believe her. The nurse turned her lips up into a smile a quarter as bright as Ulush’s. “Help? From you?” “Yes.” Ulush nodded vigorously. “Well, I don’t want your help.” “Oh…” Ulush turned her face away. Then she turned back to the woman behind the desk. “I just want to ask you something.” It was for this moment that she had worked so hard to help this anti-Semitic nurse. “Where is the children’s department in this hospital?” “One floor above us. Why?” the nurse muttered into her tea glass. “Thanks.” Ulush turned to go. No, she wouldn’t take the baby when she went upstairs, but she could not leave her alone either. She was very happy to see Ronia, the woman in the bed next to hers, awake. “Can I ask you some-

thing?” Ulush asked. Ronia stared at her in silence and nodded. “Can I put my daughter’s cradle here, next to you? I need to go out for a short time, and I want someone to take care of her if she cries.” Ronia continued staring at her silently. “She doesn’t need to eat. She ate a short time ago. And if you want, tomorrow night, I’ll watch your baby so you can sleep. She wakes you up a lot, doesn’t she?” Ronia nodded. “Thanks.” Ulush breathed and hurried to pull the cradle over to her neighbor’s bed. Then she turned and left the room, purposely choosing the other side of the corridor, where she wouldn’t have to pass the desk of the nurse in charge. At the top of the stairs was a closed door with a glass pane. She knocked lightly and tried to peek in through the window. Besides blurred moving figures, she couldn’t see a thing. Suddenly, the door was flung open, and a tall female doctor stood in the doorway. Ulush wanted to start stammering an excuse, but the doctor simply passed her by and walked out, leaving the door open. The young Jewish woman slipped inside the silent ward and closed the door behind her. She found herself in a large room with five doors. What now? Where could she go? In the middle of the room was a desk with three figures sitting at it. It was much more active here than in the corridor downstairs. She studied the desk. She had no chance of go-

ing from room to room to look for Gustav without the women there seeing her and asking questions. What would she say then? “I’m looking for the boy who was staying with me until a week ago”? Or perhaps, “I’m looking for the boy I helped abduct”? The first room was very close to her, and with one rapid stride, she crossed the threshold. It was dark, and only a small light glowed, casting weak rays on seven beds. There was no adult in the room. Ulush went from bed to bed, closely scanning the sleeping faces. No, none of them was Gustav. She hurried to leave the room before a staff member could enter and find her there. If there would have been parents there, she could have pretended to be the mother of one of the children, but apparently no one was allowed to stay the night with patients. Or perhaps none of these children had mothers… She surveyed the path that separated her from the next door. No, the light was too strong. She would be seen walking from door to door. In fact, she had already been seen. One of the personnel caught sight of her from the desk and stood up. Ulush forced herself to stand calmly. She hadn’t done anything wrong by coming here, and if she wouldn’t mention Gustav, no one would connect her to his abduction. At worst, they’d scold her for wandering around in a hospital at night and entering places she didn’t belong. The nurse approached her rapidly. “Who are you?” she asked. Ulush relaxed a bit when she heard the tone. It wasn’t suspicious,

just questioning. “I’m a patient here at the hospital,” she whispered. “What do you have?” the nurse asked. “You can’t come in here and infect the children with other illnesses.” “I don’t have anything contagious.” Ulush managed a smile as she leaned on the wall behind her. “I had a baby girl; I’m in the ward downstairs.” “Actually, right now I see that you are here, in this ward. Do you want to get sick? And infect your baby with typhus or other diseases?” “No, no,” Ulush said hastily. “So why did you come up to the pediatric ward?” “I heard there’s an abandoned child here,” Ulush whispered. “He was found in the street with pneumonia.” “So?” “Do you really not know anything about him?” “Nothing. One person asked about him and said he’d check into things — but we haven’t heard back from him.” “I might know him.” “The boy? How?” “A week ago, an orphan child disappeared from the Jewish community. I helped take care of him.” The nurse didn’t ask, “What happened to his parents?” There was no need. She looked at Ulush for a long moment before finally saying, “Come.” Then she turned and walked into one of the rooms. But the child lying in the bed there was a blond boy of about three. “It’s not him,” Ulush said quietly, overwhelmed with disappointment. To be continued...

Top Diplomat Claims Trump Linked Ukraine Aid to Political Investigations THE PULSE: William Taylor, a top U.S. diplomat,

told a congressional panel that he discovered an irregular back channel from the Trump administration to the Ukrainian government. This channel

64 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

was ostensibly led by the president’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani. He testified that he sensed “something odd” that led to “ultimately alarming circumstances” and that it threatened to undermine the U.S. relationship with Ukraine. He stated that “Ambassador (to the European Union) Sondland told me that President Trump had told him that he wants President Zelensky to state publicly that Ukraine will investigate Burisma and alleged Ukrainian interference in the 2016 U.S. election.” Taylor also testified that Ambassador Sondland was well aware of Trump’s demands. Sondland is a wealthy businessman who donated one million dollars to the Trump inauguration. Taylor’s testimony casts doubt on Sondland’s testimony to Congress last week, where he claimed

that he could not fully remember the details of events. THE IMPACT: Ambassador Taylor’s testimony is a potential bombshell. He is a well-respected diplomat with many years of diplomatic experience. He came out of retirement to assume the position of chargé d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv and to run the U.S. diplomatic mission to Ukraine. Taylor is essentially drawing a direct line tying Trump’s delay of military aid to the demand for an investigation into his political opponents. This is something that Trump and his supporters have denied. Should Taylor’s version of events be corroborated by the accounts of others, it will prove to be problematic and damaging for the president.

Mulvaney Attempts to Walk Back Quid Pro Quo THE PULSE: Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney appeared to admit that the Trump administration demanded a political quid pro quo in return for releasing military aid to Ukraine. During an interview, Mulvaney seemed to indicate that the delivery of military assistance to Ukraine was being tied to an investigation of Crowdstrike and the Democratic email server. When the reporter challenged him by saying, “What you just described is a quid pro quo. It is: Funding will not flow unless the investigation into the Democratic server happens as well,” Mulvaney responded by saying, “We do that all the time with foreign policy.” In the ensuing firestorm, Mulvaney attempted to walk back his comments by saying that what he had said had been misconstrued by a hostile media. He forcefully stated that there was no quid pro quo for investigating Hunter Biden or Burisma Holdings. He also claimed that the president and the administration were within their rights to demand an investigation of Crowdstrike and the Democratic server as it has potential implications for national election security. THE IMPACT: Mulvaney’s comments added fuel to the raging partisan fires. Leading Trump officials sought to distance themselves from Mulvaney, and his position as acting chief of staff may now be in jeopardy. BACKGROUND: Crowdstrike is the firm that was hired by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to investigate the hacking of their servers in the 2016

election. Crowdstrike and others tied the breach to Russia. There is a theory that Crowdstrike, which has ties to Ukraine, falsely targeted the Russians to increase U.S. pressure on Russia and to benefit Ukraine. The proponents of this theory claim that there is a missing DNC server located in Ukraine. However, cyber security experts say that this theory is easily disproved. Modern computing uses multiple servers to relay information. There is no such thing as one single server hosting all of the DNC emails. Furthermore, the FBI received a digital image of all of the DNC servers. The digital image is a complete record of all physical computing information. There is no benefit in retrieving another physical server located in Ukraine. Additionally, the conclusion that Russia hacked the DNC server has been reached by other technology firms and investigative bodies that have studied the issue.

Syria Withdrawal Receives Bipartisan Condemnation THE PULSE: The House of Representatives voted

350-64 to condemn President Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria. The House resolution expressed concern for the fate of the U.S.-allied Kurds and expressed worry about a possible regrouping of ISIS in the areas vacated by the U.S. and their Kurdish allies. According to news reports, at least 750 ISISaffiliated individuals have escaped from Kurdish detention camps due to Syrian shelling. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has blocked the House resolution from receiving a vote in the Senate. THE IMPACT: Abandoning the Kurds has the potential to harm the ability of the U.S. to forge alliances with local groups throughout the Middle East in the ongoing war on terror. Should ISIS regroup and carry out attacks, many will blame the policies of the administration. Furthermore, the withdrawal of troops will likely embolden Vladimir Putin and Russia. However, President Trump remains confident that the removal of U.S. troops will benefit the U.S. and prevent it from becoming entangled in a never-ending war. President Trump dispatched Vice President Pence and Secretary of State Pompeo to Ankara to negotiate a cease-fire. He remains confident that this cease-fire coupled with the threat of economic damage to Turkey should they egregiously violate the terms of the agreement will prove sufficient to stabilize the area and alleviate the worries expressed by many in the military establishment and many foreign policy experts.

The busy Shabbos–yom tov– Shabbos–yom tov season is over, and so is the fish–chicken soup– fish–chicken soup cycle. I would have loved for the yom tov season to last longer, but a change in the menu doesn’t seem like a bad idea. As we slowly head into winter, comforting hot soups always feel right for the cooler days and frosty nights ahead.

Creamy Butternut Soup

Sauteing the vegetables first may seem like an unnecessary waste of kitchen time, but don’t omit this step unless you really must. Slow cooking over low heat gives soup its richest flavor. Makes 6 quarts

INGREDIENTS 1 large (3 lb.) butternut squash

3 T. oil

3 large (1 lb.) carrots

⅛ tsp. white pepper

1 medium onion

1 T. salt

⅓ knob celery

Small chunk fresh ginger or ¼ tsp. ground ginger (optional)

1 sweet potato 2 large apples

70 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

3 cinnamon sticks or 1–2 tsp. cinnamon (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. Peel all vegetables and apples and cut into very large chunks. Place into an 8-quart pot with oil and saute for 2 hours on low flame. 2. Add water to cover (and fresh ginger and cinnamon sticks, if using). Raise the flame to high and bring to boil. Continue cooking for about a half hour until vegetables are soft. 3. Add salt and spices. Remove cinnamon sticks. Blend soup until very smooth, adding water if necessary.

Hearty Vegetable Bean Soup

Blending the beans into the soup makes this one rich and hearty, while completely disguising the taste for those family members who don’t really care for beans. Makes 5–6 quarts

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

2 cups (12 oz.) small white beans

1. Soak beans in very hot water for 2 hours.

1 parsnip

2. While beans are soaking, peel all vegetables and cut into very large chunks.

1 sweet potato ¼ knob celery 1 large onion 3 large (3 lbs.) squash 2 large carrots 2 garlic cloves 2 T. oil 4 tsp. salt ⅛ tsp. white pepper

72 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

3. Sauté all vegetables in oil in a 6- or 8-quart pot for 2 hours on low flame. 4. Drain, rinse and sort beans. Add to vegetables in pot, along with water to cover. 5. Raise flame and bring to boil. Lower heat and continue cooking for 1½ to 2 hours. 6. Remove carrots and sweet potatoes. Set aside. 7. Blend the rest of soup with an immersion blender until very smooth. 8. Dice carrots and sweet potatoes. Return to pot. Add salt and pepper, and more water if soup is too thick.

Instant Tomato Soup

Soup doesn’t get any faster than this! Thick and chunky, it can almost serve as a complete meal. Makes 2–3 quarts

INGREDIENTS 1 onion, diced 1 carrot, peeled and sliced 1 T. oil 1 (13.5 oz) can tomato juice 2 cups water 1 can kidney beans 1 tsp. salt ⅛ tsp. black pepper 4–6 oz. spiral pasta

74 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

DIRECTIONS 1. Saute onion and carrot in oil for 20–30 minutes. 2. Add tomato juice, water, beans, salt and pepper, and bring to a boil. 3. Stir in pasta. Cook until pasta is very soft, adding water as necessary.

Every year, even as we settle in for the winter months, we seem shocked at the cold’s impertinence. We dutifully hang the kids’ puffer jackets on their hooks and put out our cold-weather doormats, but we’re still somewhat reluctant to welcome winter’s chill. It would be surprising, then, to learn that the residents of Denmark, one of the coldest countries on the planet, have been ranked the happiest people on earth. Temperature has a subtle way of affecting our moods and behavior, but instead of allowing the predictable winter blues to get them down, Danes have embraced the weather with a comprehensive, if charming, lifestyle change. They call it hygge.

Hygge (pronounced HOO-ga, or, if you want to get all Danish about it, HEUR-geh) is perhaps best translated as “coziness,” though some will insist that it’s more about the calm, comfort and togetherness that the word represents. In Denmark, the concept encompasses every aspect of life, from their warm, welcoming homes, to the comfort food they eat, and the frequent gatherings of friends and family. Hygge, being a celebration of comfort, doesn’t necessitate large crowds. A leisurely morning read whilst sipping a cup of coffee — that’s hygge too. Over the past few years, the hygge fad seemed to take the Western world by storm, with extensive product lines — from comfort throws to scented candles — marketed as a means of achieving that inner glow. It is quite typical of our consumerist culture to immediately go the capitalist route, but it’s important to realize that hygge isn’t purchased. It doesn’t require a large home or great wealth, either. It actually seems to have been built on the opposite: contentment with basic necessities and cozy warmth — things that are, baruch Hashem, easily within reach for all of us. Yet Americans, particularly those of the female persuasion, persist in pursuing the phenomenon, even as the sought comfort and contentedness seem to elude them. What the secular

American woman fails to recognize is that she is actually searching for security and inner peace; she’s longing for the warmth of hearth and home. Hygge, etymologically, is from an Old Norse word which refers to the soul, consciousness and meaning. Aren’t we blessed that our Yiddish lifestyle provides us that in spades? The Western culture, and the New York mentality in particular, keep us incessantly driven and focused on our upcoming goals. Our cup of coffee, and even our downtime, are slated luxuries we permit ourselves only because they assist us in keeping up with the rat race. In contrast, Danes tend to build their lives around those chilled, stress-free moments. They work — so that they can relax. They cook and clean — so that they can curl up and read. It certainly sounds heavenly the way the Danish plan their days and weeks around these moments of hyggelig bliss, but we don’t doubt that even their most hygge moments fall short of the sensation surrounding the kindling of our Shabbos candles — around which we plan our entire week. Yiddishkeit reminds us that our lives have meaning, our weeks have structure, and our home-life has a purpose. When we put that priority front and center, then creating a cozy home environment for our family isn’t merely hyggelig, it’s heilig.

Our cup of coffee, and even our downtime, are slated luxuries we permit ourselves only because they assist us in keeping up with the rat race.

A HOMEY HOME Embracing the hygge mentality allows for an instant vacation and a healthier and happier home. It helps the family bond and makes the kids feel safe and secure. As winter rears its sleepy head and reaches for us with its cold grip, let’s do our part in filling our home with the warmth and love that childhood memories are made of. Let’s break down the essential aspects of bringing the hygge feel home:

HOME & HEARTH DIM THE LIGHTS. In the winter months, we often feel the urge to brighten our homes with “daylight” bulbs. But the bright white glow disrupts the cozy ambience. It also messes with our melatonin production and sleep patterns. Warm lighting, in contrast, gives a softer and more intimate glow. So dim the lights, if possible, or switch out your bulbs for a warmer lighting. You might also choose to light some candles. Candles are a big part of hygge — Danes famously burn more candles than any other country! And if you’re lucky enough to own one, you might want to start a fire in your fireplace. Palpable warmth is a key element of the hygge atmosphere. SCENT MATTERS. Is there anything as warm and welcoming as children arriving home to a hot slow-cooked stew? Aromas, even more than tastes, have a way of taking us back to our favorite memories. Do your part in ensuring that your grown kids’ olfactory recollections will have them thinking of pleasant childhood moments. It isn’t only food that gives off a pleasant scent. You can achieve the same by diffusing essential oils or simmering a special blend on the stovetop. Make your home smell delightfully welcoming. COMFY NATURAL FIBERS. When attempting to capture hygge vibes, decor plays a huge role. Rich, natural wood and leathers, along with genuine woven

82 / THE MONSEY VIEW

wool and cozy cabled cottons, have an organic hygge feel. If thick sweaters are excessive and unneeded in your already toasty home, perhaps just cozy slippers or warm socks? Plush rugs on the cold hardwood floors add to the ambience too, and a snuggly throw on the sofa is always appreciated by those eager to cuddle up with a good book. UNPLUG. Put your phone in its charger and disconnect. The lack of distractions will allow you to be present and bond with the people who matter most. Inhale deeply, acknowledge the current moment, and be in it. Listen to your kids. Ask questions. Give answers. Just be really there. PLAY MUSIC. Your family’s favorite songs are always pleasant in the background, but why not take it further and create a “dance party” around it? Leave the camera aside. You’re making real memories, and cameras sometimes just get in the way.

FAMILY & FRIENDS Spending quality time with loved ones is a big and important part of the cozifying experience. The following activities might not be ideal for the typical school night, but do make it a point to schedule in these fun evenings. I’ve found that winter Friday nights and Motzei Shabbosos have become my kids’ favorite times. It took a concerted, but worthwhile, effort. GAME NIGHT. What are those games languishing in the closet for? Playing together is an ideal way to get to know your children — and for them to become familiar with your more playful side. Make one night a week game night. Take out the board or card games, or go for more interactive games like charades. The idea is to laugh with and enjoy the company of the people you love. Games aren’t the only way to engage your kids in a fun way. Browse through old photos and tell the stories behind them. It will bring back memories for you, while introducing the children to some family stories they haven’t yet heard. Tell them stories from your own childhood. Kids love that! PILLOW FORTS. For a truly fun evening, consider allowing the kids to build an indoor “fort” or tent (and I don’t fault any adult who decides to “help” just so they can be part of this fun pastime). Indoor camping with sheets, pillows and flashlights takes but a few minutes to clean up — but the memories last a lifetime. DRINK WARM DRINKS. Sure, a hot drink is soothing for you, but which kid doesn’t love hot chocolate? Whether you choose to introduce your children to the delight of herbal teas or indulge them with the occasional hot cocoa, the idea is to cozy up with toasty drinks, as a family. BE CRAFTY! Long, cold Sundays are perfect for cooking or baking together. Don’t focus on being fancy now; the goal isn’t perfection. Remember when your mother allowed you to lick the chocolatey goo off the beaters? Don’t deprive your kids of that delicious memory! Allow the kids to lick the spatula and eat those cookies before they’ve

fully cooled. Your activities with your kids can extend to arts and crafts, decoupage, or perhaps teaching them how to knit or crochet. Whatever you do, when done as a family, it is infinitely sweeter. SPREAD THE WARMTH! Bake something or create something for someone else. You can even write a letter to someone special. Fill your home with joy and love — and then spread it around.

BODY & SOUL Hygge activities aren’t reserved for your young brood. While the togetherness is healthy for them and undoubtedly delightful for you, you might want to indulge in your own hygge activities when the kids are out of the house. Here are some choice activities that will warm your heart and soul: Visiting the homebound or elderly, joining a Tehillim group, inviting friends over for lunch, or, if cooking and baking is a homey activity you enjoy, sign with a local bikkur cholim to perhaps cook a meal for a family that needs it. If you give the concept some thought, I’m sure there are many more ideas that will come to mind. But don’t just think of them — go for it!

Cozy Comfort Hygge, in essence, asks us to recognize our blessings and revel in the current moment. Beyond the soothing emotional and physical comfort, it hints toward deeper reflection and satisfaction. With our loud and loving families and frequently kindled candles, it is readily apparent that we don’t need Scandinavian guidance on how to fill our home with true warmth. But as we’re often told: We can learn from everyone. So perhaps the Danes can teach us a trick or two.

Now that the excitement of yom tov has passed, the days have shortened and the temperatures have dropped, our little ones are bound to be spending more time indoors. Keeping kids busy becomes the name of the game. And while some people don’t mind tons of noise and action, others of us (ahem!) prefer quiet, cozy and calm. My favorite fuzzy memory as a child is of camping out — indoors. Here’s how to do it, the updated version: SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• Sleeping bags, 1 per child, or 3 large blankets + individual blankets and pillows for each child • Flashlights The rules are simple. Gather all your little kids into one room of the house and put down sleeping bags. If you haven’t any sleeping bags, make a pallet using three large blankets as the base. Have everyone cozy up and turn on their flashlights. Turn off the overhead lights, and have some fun! You can play word games, have a kumzitz, and/or make a shadow puppet show using your hands and a flashlight. Slideshows are also a great activity. If you have the

88 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

setup, put family pictures on a slideshow and revel in the memories. A cozy way to end the evening is with an illustrated story played on the Kidslide Middos Slide Projector. My kids love watching the tales, and I love watching them get all drowsy…

Let’s face it, though: Not all the time can be drowsy hour. Homes need to be stocked with toys that will engage the minds and the hands, keeping kids occupied during those long indoor hours. The Monsey View polled local mothers to hear which toys get the most use in their playrooms:

LEGO AND DUPLO:

PLAYMAGS:

Though mothers and grandmothers usually feel calmer with the large-size Duplo, kids ages 6 and up — especially boys — gravitate toward the mini version and can stay busy with them for hours!

Children of all ages love the building ability magnets add to this great toy!

CLICS: Boys and girls of all ages enjoy working together to build Clics masterpieces.

MATCHBOX CARS: Once a classic, always a classic! Anything on wheels is especially fascinating for the boys.

DOLLS: Imitation babies are popular with the younger crowd, but slightly older girls love dolls with long hair that they can style. And accessories? Always a plus!

TRAIN SET:

BOARD GAMES:

Whether designed of wood or battery-powered, train sets are a lot of fun. Though what’s not to love about a train set that emits real steam and a chugga-chugga-choo-choo?

Monopoly, Mousetrap, Scrabble… All can be loads of fun, and if Mommy or Tatty plays with the children, it’s always so much more exciting!

90 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

PUZZLES: Though older kids can get lost in a 10,000-piece puzzle, puzzles are popular even for two-year olds. Just make sure that the large wood pop-in pieces are the ones that find their way to Toddler...

MENTCHIES:

PLAYSTIX:

Though toddlers are happy to play with mentchies alone, older kids love to build scenery and then add the mentchies to the mix.

Kind of like the Lincoln Logs of the common era...

KITCHEN SET, FAKE FOOD AND DISHES: PLAYMOBIL: Playmobil is in a league of its own! Girls love to use Playmobil in a dollhouse-manner, and boys… mostly gravitate toward the emergency vehicle sets.

Nothing spurs the youngest toward imaginative play like a kitchen set and fake food! Toddlers and nursery kids love to pretend they’re baking challah and making supper.

YOM TOV TREATS THAT TURNED OUT GREAT! Though not the best toy-picker-outer on the planet, I recently earned points for choosing just the right toys for my kids for yom tov.

LEWO WOODEN PUZZLE $11.99 from Amazon

For my nearly-two-year old, I got this wooden puzzle that features simple shapes and colors. Best yet is that each shape has either one, two, three or four holes, teaching counting and problemsolving. It’s also small enough for her to carry around and keeps her engaged for up to a half hour at a time!

COOGAM 130 PCS WOODEN PATTERN BLOCKS SET $11.99 from Amazon

Remember Tangrams? Yes, my four-year old got a taste of the olden days when I gifted her this toy… and she was soon joined by her older brother and sister who were equally mesmerized. We now pull it out whenever she “doesn’t have what to do!” It keeps her mind working for up to an hour.

METAL BRAIN-TEASER PUZZLES $5.99 for 16 puzzles from Amazon

My seven-year old is a “real boy,” always onthe-go and ready for action. These brain-teaser puzzles enthralled him from the get-go, while at the same time, kept him calm and focused — a win-win all around! Even better is that these toys are pocketsized, so he keeps a few with him for those moments when he needs something to fiddle with.

AN INVITATION TO PLAY Need some great out-of-the-box ideas to build up your playroom? Check these out!

A foam puzzle floor or rug makes winter playing so much warmer!

There are some great indoor climbing bars that can be attached to the wall or ceiling, and freestanding units are also available.

An indoor swing can satisfy movement needs for homebound kids, helping to fend off cabin fever. There are various types; some can be hung from the ceiling, and others in the doorway with a rod.

All you need is a quality set of hand grips and hardware to turn one playroom wall into a rockwall gym. There are some sets that come with handles and/or a rope for added safety.

Creating a separate little area off a playroom or bedroom can provide kids with quality reading time — and they won’t even realize they’re learning

For younger kids, bookshelves like these can come to great use. (Make sure you anchor bookshelves to the wall to prevent tippage!)

Winter brings along with it a blessed routine. It’s a great time to tackle those issues that we wish were resolved once and for all. Here we address what just may be the answer to perhaps the most common one of all. “What brings clients to you?” I ask Yitty Klein, certified health and Mastery coach. “It’s usually desperation that makes a person place the first phone call,” Yitty says. The desperation to find a lasting solution to their poor eating habits, as she explains. “They all have the same question: Why? Why they are still entrenched in the same patterns if it makes them feel so horrible. Why they can’t stop, and why they can’t exercise selfcontrol, even if they want to change so badly.” By now Yitty has heard the question from countless women. They always mention different triggers, different foods, different habits. But they all ask “why?” “And there’s a reason,” Yitty says. “Food is often used as a means to soothe stress, which can turn into a habit. But the reason why people use food as a tool is different for every person. That’s why this isn’t about dieting or losing weight as much as about breaking emotionally charged cycles and habits.” Yitty offers one example (with details changed to protect privacy). Leah once called, with that typical frustration in her voice. After Yitty met with her and they explored her triggers and habits, Leah realized that her “why” had a twofold answer. First, she was worried about her son. She was concerned about his social skills, his behavior and about his performance in cheder… and her worries drove her to eat.

October 24, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 103 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Leah also second-guessed her abilities as a mother and the choices she was making, and so her mind went round and round… If she would have arranged help for her son sooner, she thought, and if she were more patient, then maybe he wouldn’t be this difficult. And these ruminations were always accompanied by chomping on food. Leah noticed that, at this point, eating while stressed had become a habit, and it started spilling over to other areas, as well. Her go-to place when stress hit was the cabinet. Yitty and Leah got started by tackling the first issue — clearing Leah’s fears and worries about her son. After successfully working on these emotions, Leah realized that the worst-case scenario she habitually played out in her head was very unlikely to happen, and that she had the ability to handle the situation if it did. Finally, she was at peace, confident that she had what it took to deal with whatever life would bring. Next, Leah worked on the disempowering guilt she was carrying by exploring the benefits her child had from being parented by her, in her way. Letting go of this guilt allowed her to relax and react better to her son. Passing this first hurdle was critical. Being at peace with her son’s difficulties allowed Leah to better access the parenting knowledge she had in her. She also realized that when she focused on his positive traits and noticed his improvements, not only didn’t she turn to food, but she also spoke to him in a much more calm and loving manner. Her son reacted very well to this, and Leah saw a drastic change in him. This made her feel so empowered and gave her strength! Leah also worked to get to a place of accepting herself unconditionally, unrelated to the choices she made or the way she looked. Though she resisted this at first, for fear of lowering her motivation to change her eating habits, she was surprised to realize that this actually played a big part in getting her on track. As soon as she was at peace with herself, the food lost its grip on her. And she now had the cooperation of her entire self instead of constant internal battles. Next, Leah worked on breaking the pattern of running for food every time stress hit — and she was surprised at how simple it was! Once she was more conscious of her habits, she was able to catch herself in advance instead of realizing what she was doing only once those cookies were gone. As soon as she felt anxious and wanted to grab a snack, she quickly distracted herself by using specific tools that quickly pulled her mind’s focus away from the cravings. After a few days of these ex-

ercises, the pull of the cabinet weakened, and at that point, completely breaking the habit was much easier to do. After that, Yitty worked with Leah to activate her desired state of calm. The reasoning? There was no way Leah could be calm and worried at the same time! Once she activated calm a number of times, it was much easier for her to tap into that feeling, and by practicing calm she didn’t fall into the cycle of worrying — and eating — all the time. Leah soon found that she was much more empowered and in control of her emotions. Finally, she felt free! THIS IS ONE client’s story, and there are many others. Empowering women and watching them free themselves of their struggles, Yitty says, is very meaningful to her. Each client has her individual issues that need to be resolved, and each one is like a mystery at first; there’s no knowing what work will follow. Working with each woman involves finding those pieces that are holding her back and tackling them one by one. And once the underlying issues are resolved, the path to success is unobstructed. Building her desire to help clients empower and appreciate themselves began when Yitty entered the world of personal training and witnessed the struggles and negative beliefs of so many women. They had much to be proud of, and yet so many of them were critical of themselves — their weight, their parenting, their perceived failures. Many were chronic dieters with no long-term success to show for their efforts. After realizing that, Yitty decided she needed more tools to help her clients, and that’s when she became an Ace Certified Health Coach and took Dina Friedman’s Mastery coaching course. Since then Yitty has watched many women overcome their emotional issues, poor self-image and destructive thought patterns that led to their inability to maintain the healthy lifestyle that they so badly wanted. Some common issues that get in the way of balanced eating habits are anxiety, guilt, OCD thought patterns, fears, loss, childhood traumas and disempowering beliefs. Very often, resentment to current eating habits only works against a person. While most people know what they should be eating, these issues get in the way. Only after working on the distressing aspects behind their eating habits, and appreciating themselves as they should, can women learn to lead happier, more-fulfilling lives. And that’s when food can once again be enjoyed in the way that it was meant to be.

Diets backfires very often as “bad” foods become irresistible and deprivation leads to desperation.

WITH YITTY KLEIN

I’ve tried so many diets. Why would this work? For years, society has glorified quick-fix diets, and more recently, people have come to realize that they don’t work as a long-term solution. Who is not familiar with the struggle of starting a diet, hoping that maybe this will finally be the solution, only to have the motivation fizzle out with time as any lost weight is regained? Diets backfire very often as “bad” foods become irresistible and deprivation leads to desperation. The failure only leads the dieter to lose belief that they will ever get their eating under control, and this further disempowers them. That happens because most people who struggle with weight have triggers and beliefs that no diet can heal. And while diets work only when motivation is high, healing underlying issues brings

I don’t have any major emotional issues, but still find myself eating when I know I shouldn’t. What can I do? It’s true that sometimes excessive eating is triggered by underlying issues. However, the cause can also be poor habits, negative thought patterns or everyday stress. What happens when you beat yourself up for eating more than you wanted to? Does the negativity help you gain selfcontrol, or does it cause you to eat even more? Many people who are trying to lose weight carry a fear of not losing weight. Subconsciously, they feel like the fear and desperation will help them get to their goal, but it usually backfires. A habit is formed by doing something repeatedly. You may find when this happens that the reaction is so subconscious you may become aware that you ate those potato chips only after the fact! There are ways to distract the mind when situations that normally instigate the snacking arise. After practicing these techniques for a week or two, the habit will lose its hold on you. At that point, it gets easier to completely break the habit; the brain changes its thought patterns and completely “forgets” the old habit, until mindless eating stops becoming a struggle. How can I let go of the desperation to lose weight?

permanent results. When food is not the enemy, eating is not a struggle since it is no longer so emotionally laden — and that’s when weight loss can follow.

When we are desperate and hyper-focused on an outcome, many things happen. We actually repel what we want, and the stress of that resistance lowers our self-control. We view ourselves with a critical lense and focus on our failures without even noticing successes. From that place we cannot make good choices. Once you understand this and see how it applies

to yourself, it’s easier to let go of desperation. That is done by seeing the benefits of staying the way you are and surrendering to reality. When you are in a peaceful place emotionally, you can much more effectively make good choices. I’m the type of person who needs rules. How can I live a healthy lifestyle with no rules? Food is not meant to be complicated. It is here to sustain us and to keep us feeling vibrant and healthy. In His great kindness, Hashem even added beautiful colors and delicious taste to our foods. When do we start looking for rules? When we eat excessively, we start resenting its effects, and eating becomes an issue. That’s when we start looking outward for advice on how to eat and end up hearing conflicting information. There are so many “shoulds” out there, and even more “should nots”! After collecting so much information, we lose confidence in our own sound judgment. By listening to your body and noticing patterns, you can know, better than anyone, what works for you — because you are unique. You can feel when your balance is right; you know when you are eating enough so you don’t feel deprived, but not so much that you will end up regretting it. By letting go of the negative programming, quieting all of the voices in your mind, and striving for a sustainable lifestyle while being kind to both your physical and emotional health, you can gain the knowledge of what is good for you. It’s as simple as that! Yitty Klein is a certified health and Mastery coach based in Monsey. She will be starting a group coaching series this winter, b’ezras Hashem, which will include invaluable information and healing activities that will help women manifest their desired lifestyle. She can be reached at 845-659-2103.

Somewhere around an hour before the zman for Motzei Simchas Torah, a feeling of mild panic grips us: We’ll be returning to our regular schedules tomorrow!

108 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Sure, the sensation starts out as anticipation, but it quickly morphs into this intense desire to get it right this time. This year, we promise, things will be different. This year I’ll be more efficient. This year I’ll be outside waiting for the children’s school buses, even before that first, impatient honk. This year the mitzvah notes won’t be hastily scribbled against the wall (or on my raised knee) and homework won’t be completed while trying to zip up jackets. This year I’m going to send the kids off with a smile and calm demeanor.

And then our wistful wishes continue to the rest of the day. Never again will laundry languish in the dryer until the clothes are needed for school… Followed by the grand idea: This year, I’ll have my ingredients ahead of time and start cooking early enough so that the kids come home to ready, delicious-smelling dinners… And of course, the clincher: Bedtime will be early and timely this year. Even I will somehow get my much-needed seven hours of sleep. These promises are whispered fervently. After all, these resolutions affect our own and our family’s immediate well-being, and we so want to do right by them.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS?

Too rarely, though, do we follow through. Sadly, the self-doubt soon kicks in as our grand goals loom unattainable. There’s this shrinking feeling of surrender. We see the mountain in front of us and wonder why we should even bother starting; we’ll never make it all the way to the top, anyway. Perhaps the first three footholds below that can get you smoothly started on your climb will make you more comfortable initiating the project, seeing how it is entirely doable. Make no mistake about it: Discipline and desire are definite prerequisites, but with the right attitude and proper tools, a successful routine is entirely within your reach.

PURPOSEFUL PLANNING It is always in the hour when Shabbos leaves us that we suddenly remember all that the week has in store. Instead of feeling overwhelmed at the stressful feeling, use it as an impetus to get your week started. Motzei Shabbos is the perfect time to plan your week. 1.

To-do list: Start with jotting down all that came to mind over the weekend. Write separate columns for errands, at-home chores and business-related responsibilities. Putting it all on paper puts our mind at ease. It’s a decluttering of our brain, if you will.

2. Review your family’s schedule for the week. You likely weren’t going to miss your appointments and events, but planning for them a bit in advance permits you to prepare without any last-minute pressure. 3.

Weekly dinner menu: Planning at the start of the week (if you don’t yet have your alternating weekly menus) allows you to purchase all of your ingredients ahead of time.

Tip: Hold on to your weekly menus for an easier time planning in future weeks.

PROPER PREPARATION There is a common misconception about the people who always seem to have it all together. There’s this assumption that they are quicker, more capable or more organized. And while any of those might be true, none of those are necessary qualifications for being on top of your game. As a matter of fact, you don’t need to be particularly skilled at anything to accomplish a whole lot in that effortless manner. Anyone can do it! The secret tool is: preparation. This concept is fundamentally Yiddish: Our day starts in the

evening — hours before our night’s rest. And while there are surely many other lofty reasons for this purposeful design, in chassidus we’re taught that hachanos matter. That is why our routines should have three components: The first element of a stress-free evening routine is an efficient cleanup sequence. Ideally, it should incorporate a flowing routine that is executed as easily and mindlessly as a familiar, well-choreographed dance. The final part of the routine is to reward yourself for a job well done. But a clean kitchen and a square of chocolate, while lovely, won’t help your mornings much if you don’t get to the all-important preparations. Following are the three most important categories. 1.

Children’s clothing — and shoes. It is worthA five-minute while to issue — be it a prepare your hanging hem, own clothes missing pair of as well. You’ll matching tights, love the leior looking for the sure of your right hair accesdecisionssory — can throw free morning your morning to come. way off schedule, whereas when dealing with it in the evening, it won’t even register as an “issue.”

2. Check homework, prepare snacks, write mitzvah notes — and have them neatly prepared at a designated launchpad. (If you’ll be heading out too, double-check your own bag — and the baby’s diaper bag — as well.) 3.

Make sure that you have your breakfast and dinner ingredients. If you serve breakfast at home, keep in mind that much

Deserving an honorary mention in the list of preparations is retiring early to bed. Also, remove any distractions from your sleeping quarters — be it something that might keep you up at night, or grab your interest first thing in the morning.

110 / THE MONSEY VIEW / October 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

can be (and if they can be, they should be) prepared the night before for an easier time in the morning. As for dinner, thawing meat the night before will get your cooking started at a more reasonable hour.

PROCEED POSITIVELY Speaking of reasonable hours, there is also an unreasonable hour we try to navigate every morning. With eyes still half-closed, we suddenly become mathematicians and expertly calculate how many more minutes we can safely sleep and still make our first bus on time. Our math relies solely on the schedule of our first bus, minus the amount of time we need to get ready, plus the number of minutes that we can get away with and still not be late — and only then does our algorithm arrive at the magical number. The fallacy in our thinking is that somehow, those extra few minutes will make us more rested, and therefore more productive. But the opposite is true. Harried mothers don’t function at their best. The solution is the Fifteen-Minute Headstart. Take that expertly configured timing and subtract 15 minutes. Now lock that in as your magic number. 1.

The first step is to get up at your perfectly calibrated moment. Wash negel vasser and

say Modeh Ani with a genuine and grateful smile on your face. 2.

3.

Did you know? A smile will boost your energy, self-esteem and general mood!

The generous fifteen minutes you’ve now allotted yourself will give you ample time to make the beds, open the blinds and take out negel vasser — 2 minutes (once these become habit, they require no effort at all, as habits seldom do). Proceed with freshening up — 5 minutes — and putting on something comfortable, yet flattering —5 minutes. As women, we function at our best when we look good. Keep smiling — that smile is your most beautiful accessory! But beyond making you look and feel your best, your smile will reduce your stress hormone, cortisol, and instead invigorate you with lovely and empowering endorphins. (And if you’ve opened those blinds, as suggested, the daylight will give you a heavenly boost of serotonin — another energizing gift from Above.) The morning hours are Divinely designed to wake us up energized and happy. And as a side note: Happy people are kinder, healthier and more productive.

In Hakol Beseder lingo, we refer to the above as the Rise and Shine. When we begin our mornings with a fresh and upbeat start, we allow our days, b’ezras Hashem, to proceed in the right direction.

Don’t forget comfortable shoes! Slippers have you schlepping along, whereas a shockabsorbing sole will add a muchneeded bounce to your step.

GOOD MORNING! Now that you’re ready — and still ahead of time, technically — you don’t need to call to your children to rush and race with you to see “who can be ready first.” As a relaxed and happy mommy, you can wake them gently by rubbing their back as you wrap their blanket more tightly around them. Did you know that kids (and adults) awaken more easily when feeling warm and loved? Watch them stretch and smile as they wake up. In your still-relaxed demeanor, you can coax the kids along with their sleepy Modeh Ani and then direct them to their prepared clothing. Make no mistake about it — in your calm state you’ll soon find far more getting done. Do keep your eye on the clock, though, or better yet, set your timer for three minutes before each bus. When we’re ready too early, oddly, there’s a tendency to somehow be late. The Mesillas Yesharim says, “There’s no danger like the danger of time,” and while there are many insightful interpretations for that, let’s take it for the immediate and literal. Serve the kids the healthy breakfast or morning snack you prepared, and as you bundle them up, give them a tight squeeze. Hugs bring on a rush of the wonderful hormone called oxytocin, which will help your child feel confident and secure as they head into their day. And as you walk back into your home, take a moment to smile to your reflection in the mirror and commend yourself for the wonderful start to the day. And don’t forget to send a “thank You,” on High, for the loving dose of siyata d’Shmaya. Tziri Hershkovitz is the co-founder and author of Hakol Beseder, the popular program that has been guiding women for the past 15 years on easy, effective and enjoyable homemaking. TEA TIME! There are thousands of types of tea, but all are made from one plant. The difference between teas is due to how the leaves are processed.

Herbal teas aren’t really made of tea. They are blends of fruits and herbs that are heated and served in ways similar to tea.

Tea made from loose tea leaves is considered richer than tea made with tea bags.

Silk bags containing tea were handed out as samples to customers by American tea importer Thomas Sullivan. Some made the mistake of immersing the silk bags in hot water instead of using the traditional metal infuser to make

tea… and the tea bag was born!

The World’s Fair in St. Louis of 1904 was a very hot place to be. So hot, in fact, that nobody wanted to buy tea from seller Richard Blechynden… So he came up with the idea of pouring his product over ice. That caught people’s attention and still does! Who doesn’t love a refreshing cup of iced tea?

Iced tea is most popular in America, with the popular drink making up nearly 80 percent of the yearly tea consumption.

A traditional samovar

The samovar was the traditional method of tea preparation in Russia. It heated the water and then kept the tea hot for hours.

The English tradition of serving milk with tea was started with the surge in popularity of bone china. Being rather fragile, the china would sometimes crack when hot tea was poured inside. To protect it, milk would be added before the tea, thereby preventing the cup from undergoing thermal shock. Metal infusers predated tea bags
