NORDKOP MOUNTAIN HIKE

(Re: Inbox, Issue 213) I want to thank The Monsey View for suggesting that I write an article on 10 familyfriendly hikes in the Monsey area. This was a great idea, and I was honored to be a central part of the hiking theme. I enjoyed writing the article and am amazed at the feedback I received from it. Many people came over to me telling me they appreciated it very much, and have tried some of the hikes. I am impressed by the broad readership of The Monsey View, as well as their professionalism in working with me to get this article published. However, I was dismayed to see a letter from the editor cautioning the Nordkop Mountain hike I suggested, as well as the full-page ad by an organization warning about this hike. I think the choice of wording was particularly strong, when just a bit of clarification would have sufficed. It has come to my attention that several people have gotten lost on this hike by not following proper hiking protocol and ethics. This is not an issue about that specific hike being improperly described, but rather general rules and protocols that must be heeded when going on a hike. Having been involved in many searches over the years, and having trained some of the local organizations in hiking protocols for searches, I have seen too often a lack of preparedness and awareness when it comes to hiking within our community. This is why we are constantly hearing about people getting lost and rescued by our fine search organizations. Perhaps I should have placed a greater emphasis on proper hiking protocol and preparedness prior to my article, although the purpose of my article was just to describe some of the

FREE CLEANING hikes. I therefore would like to take this opportunity to present some critical safety points to consider when planning a hike: 1. Know your exact route prior to heading out. This involves using a trail map, and understanding how the trails work and which route you will be taking. If you lack a good sense of direction or don’t fully understand how to read and follow the hiking maps, do not attempt to hike without someone more experienced who can guide you. 2. Make sure to tell someone where you are going and which route you are taking, so that if you get lost and are unable to make a call, they know your vicinity. 3. Do not attempt a hike without a fully-charged cell phone. Ideally you should only hike with a GPS-enabled phone or device so that you can fully track your movements and coordinates. 4. Proper footwear, clothing and gear are critical. Make sure everyone in your party has plenty of water, hiking boots (or good sneakers with a grip) and comfortable clothing. Do not climb a mountain in dress shoes, dress shirt or dress pants. 5. Do not take young children on long or difficult hikes unless everyone is well prepared and experienced. 6. Do not leave anything on the trail. It pains me when I see Lieber’s wrappers or Gefen juice boxes on the local hiking trails. 7. Unless you are an experienced hiker, do not attempt to hike on Erev Shabbos or Erev Yom Tov after morning.

Regarding the points mentioned cautioning the Nordkop Mountain hike, I have hiked this mountain numerous times and am very familiar with the entire mountain, both on and off the trail. I chose to include this mountain as one of my ten recommendations because of its proximity to Monsey and because it offers a very rewarding view for a relatively short hike. It is a straightforward hike with a single trail directly to the view. In response to each of the critical points mentioned: 1. The hike indeed climbs 350 feet in half a mile. However, due to its short distance to the top, and good footing on the hike, it is very doable for anyone in shape, including children ages six and up. It is less difficult and much shorter than other more popular hikes in the area such as Kakiat, and I objectively chose to classify it as moderate rather than difficult. I did mention a steep ascent up and felt that should suffice. 2. There is no “loop” to return to your entry point. This hike involves ascending and descending along the same trail route. When

I wrote a distance of 1.2 miles as a “round trip,” I included the distance there and back as a round trip, with a total of 1.2 miles that includes both up and down along the same route. In no way did I indicate this was a loop trail. 3. Once you have reached the second lookout, which should take 25 to 35 minutes from where the yellow trail begins, return via the same route. I thought it was obvious to return along the same route, and did not need to include it in the text, but I see it’s important to state the obvious sometimes, so that people don’t get confused. 4. It is indeed six more miles to any other trail once you go past the view, and will take you deeper into Harriman without any close exits if you continue further along the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail. In fact, many of the trails in Harriman lead to long-distance trails deep in the wilderness, and without proper planning and reading a map, you can go off base on many of the trails. The same is true for Kakiat and many of the other trails that I described. The imperative safety factor is to know where you are going and see it on a map, and understand your route. Wishing everyone a safe hike, Heshy Friedman www.harrimanhiker.com

THE GREATEST HISHTADLUS (Re: Week in Review, Issue 211) Dear Readers, As we sign the petition against the new education law, let’s each say a kapitel of Tehillim and plead with Hakadosh Baruch Hu for the gezeirah to be abolished and, b’siyata d’Shmaya, to be mechanech our children in the true Torah way. Let’s not forget what a ko’ach our tefillos have. Thousands of signatures will, iy”H, have a ko’ach in the government office. Thousands of tefillos will definitely have a ko’ach in Shamayim! E.S.

NOT EVERY DESTINATION IS FOR US (Re: Excursions Supplement) I wanted to thank you for your Excursions supplement, which has directed us so clearly to great destinations. I wanted to make people aware that that when visiting places such as amusement parks, shows are oftentimes performed by women and inappropriately dressed individuals, and thus may not be a proper destination. We recently had such an experience at Clarks in New Hampshire. Another area to be careful is at water rides in a specific amusement park. Through guarding our eyes, we will surely be blessed with shemirah Elyonah! A Reader

A SUPER SAVER (Re: Niagara Falls, Excursions Supplement) Thanks for publishing The Monsey View Excursions supplement. It is a major help when planning an outing or getaway. I have recently visited Niagara Falls, and the information provided was of great assistance. There was one vital piece of information that I felt was missing. At the Canadian side of the falls, visitors can get a pass called the “Adventure Pass.” The pass costs $90 and is valid for two days. With this pass you can have access to almost everything for no additional fee. It even includes free bus rides with the local city bus. The pass can be acquired at the Information Center. Thank you, T. M.

RE: SENSITIVITY CAN BE TAUGHT (Inbox, Issue 212) Dear Pained Mother, I cried along with your pain and your dear child’s pain as I read your heartfelt plea. Your letter was an important step, but not enough. As a mother, you are your child’s guardian, and it is your responsibility to ascertain that he does not suffer such abuse one more day. If you can’t get the school to respond to this severe matter effectively, then perhaps you can find someone, like an older and responsible sibling or friend, to ride with your child on the bus as a companion and protector who can ward off taunts and encourage your child. Another option might be to change his mode of transportation. These options are not simple, but they are certainly easier and less costly than healing a victim of verbal abuse from the deep emotional pain that can cause lifelong damage. Unfortunately, I’m talking from experience. My healthy child was ridiculed and taunted in his younger years. I was totally unaware of the situation until I noticed some serious, worrisome changes occurring in him. It was a difficult journey getting him back on track, b’ezras Hashem. Recently a caring bus driver shared with me that my younger child with a physical disability was being taunted daily by some classmates. That very day I arranged with the school to put my child on another route. I am very grateful to the responsible bus driver for being aware of what goes on on his bus and caring enough to share it with me. I wish you success in protecting your precious child from more suffering, and may you see much nachas from him. As an addition to your plea, I want to add that on the other side, all parents have a responsibility to protect their children from the severe hardships many people are unfortunately suffering due to the fact that in their childhood years they were on the giving end of abuse. Children sometimes think that it is a game or a joke. They must be taught that they are playing with fire. Another Pained Mother

ROBOCALLS REVISITED (Re: Make It Stop!, Issue 177) I would like to inform people who generate robocalls about two upsetting occurrences that I experienced today involving robocalls. 1. A robocall came in, and it tied up my line for a while and prevented me from making an outgoing call. This can certainly be a major problem if someone needs to make an urgent call quickly. 2. As I was davening Shemoneh Esrei, a robocall came in and was answered by my machine. The message continued for more than a minute, in a loud voice, which

prevented me from concentrating on my davening, forcing me to stop until the message ended. Please put an end to these calls, which are not only annoying but can also create a sakanah by tying up the phone line. Frustrated in Monsey RUCHY REESE RESPONDS: After writing the article about robocalls, I discovered a simple method to prevent those annoying calls from tying up my phone line: I just push the FLASH button and connect to a new line, leaving the robocaller droning on for as long as he pleases.

YOUR VOICE KEEP OUR KINDERLACH SAFE Dear Mother, I was in a large local chain store, minding my own business and getting some shopping done. Your cart, with an adorable little girl in it, was blocking the entranceway to a section of the store. I would have had no problem maneuvering my cart to get around yours, but the guy who wanted to get a skid-laden delivery into that section found it annoying. He proclaimed in a very loud voice, “Whose cart is this?” I stepped forward, abandoning my own cart to take charge of yours — which included your daughter. He had no idea that the child wasn’t mine and couldn’t have cared less. That section had about four aisles, and your daughter kept pointing to the aisle she thought you’d gone into, but I didn’t relish being charged with kidnapping so I stayed put. I waited a few minutes until you appeared, never letting go of the cart. You seemed annoyed that the cart wasn’t in the precise place you had left it and asked your daughter, “Where did you go?” Huh? She’d

94 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 4, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

gone nowhere and was in sight the entire time. I told you we had been waiting for you, but you whisked the cart away without a backward glance (let alone a thank you). Shopper, I know how annoying it can be to shlep a child-laden, grocery-stuffed cart up and down aisles, but leaving your cart at the start of the aisle, thus blocking it while trusting in Hakadosh Baruch Hu (or a kind human soul) to babysit or move the cart aside as need be, is irresponsible and dangerous behavior. And... you’re welcome. R.S.

My Concern:

ajwachsman com

“Your hair is already perfect!” That’s what you’ll hear me tell my eightyear-old daughter EVERY morning. She brushes her hair over and over again. I’m not sure if she’s feeling insecure with her looks or if she may have some obsession. Should I be concerned? Concern or No Concern?

It can be very frustrating when children present with stubborn behaviors. Many are harmless and age-appropriate; some could be signs of a developmental issue. I would ask, “Is she fussing about anything else? Does she present with obsessive thoughts? Is she hyper-focused on things?”

Exceeding Expectations

If this is the only “obsession” you noticed, then she is probably experiencing an emotional growth curve of coming to terms with her looks. You can reassure her with positive affirmations and let her know that she is indeed attractive and presentable with or without all those brushstrokes. If constantly brushing her hair is only one of a number of compulsive behaviors you’re seeing, there might be a deeper problem at hand.

Mothers’ worries addressed by Hamaspik’s OPWDD Evaluator Dr. Blau

My Concern: My five-year-old son doesn’t have any friends! His rebbi says that he’s usually on his own, and whenever there are kids playing outside, he refuses to join the game. Should I be concerned?

Concern or No Concern? You are correct to pay attention to your son’s social life. Socialization is an integral part of a child’s development and well-being. It is important to understand the situation a little better. Is your son choosing not to socialize, or is he being rejected by his peers? Do his peers see him as awkward or even “weird,” or is he simply happier playing on his own? When we address whether a child is on the autism spectrum, we try to determine if his lack of socialization stems from personality and temperament or a developmental or psychiatric issue. If your son would be accepted by his peers and could participate in a game with them and yet chooses not to do so, he’s more likely to be introverted or perhaps socially insecure or anxious. If, however, his peers perceive him to be odd or strange and they therefore don’t want to play with him, he might have developmental challenges or more serious psychiatric issues. I would suggest that you invite over one of his peers and observe how he interacts with your son. If he seems comfortable and the two children engage in mutually collaborative activities and conversations as equals, you probably have no reason to be concerned. If you see, however, that the other child has to take the lead in picking and doing the activities and relates to your son more like a younger child (i.e., not an equal, but rather someone he plays with and instructs as a kind favor) or you notice that the conversations are one-sided (the peer is interested in age/culture-appropriate topics and your son is not), I would advise that you have a proper evaluation conducted.

Parshas Shoftim By: Malka Schneps

“This is amazing!” shouted four-year-old Chany to her brother Yehudah as they skipped ahead of their father down the trail through the woods. They were having a delightful day, exploring nature as well as bonding as a family. Then, all at once, the fun turned to fear for little Chany, as the trail ended at a brook that appeared to the small child to be a large, raging river. The water gushed past her with such a fury that it sent a shiver down her spine. “Yehudah,” Chany quivered. “I can’t cross this water. It’s too big and powerful for me. I’ll be swept away!” “You’re right,” agreed Yehudah. “It is too big and powerful for you, and if you tried to cross it, you would be swept away.” Chany turned to Yehudah, her eyes wide in fear as she whispered, “What are we going to do?” Yehudah smiled reassuringly, “I hiked this trail with Tatty many times, but I was just as scared as you the first time. This brook is definitely too big for a small child, but it is not too big for Tatty. He just picked me up and jumped across!” “That’s right.” Their father smiled as he stepped beside them. “Don’t be afraid. You just hold on to me, and I will carry you safely to the other side.” It says in this week’s parsha, “When you go out to war against your enemies… do not be afraid of them, for Hashem, your G-d,

106 / THE MONSEY VIEW

is with you…” (Devarim 20:1). The Ohr HaChaim Hakadosh explains that this pasuk is alluding to the ultimate war, a battle which we must all fight: the war against the yetzer hara. The Ohr HaChaim also points out a seemingly disheartening fact about that war — we cannot win this war. R’ Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a, explains the three reasons we cannot defeat the yetzer hara as follows: (1) The yetzer hara has far more experience in fighting this battle than we do; (2) We naturally desire everything that the yetzer hara dangles before us; and (3) After a person commits many aveiros, chas v’shalom, the yetzer hara grows even stronger. With these factors weighing down upon us, it seems impossible that we could ever succeed in defeating the yetzer hara. And now, as we proceed through Elul and work hard to do teshuvah, it seems unlikely that we would ever be able to do teshuvah. As the Ohr HaChaim states, it is not possible for us to succeed. What is the answer? Is there any hope for us? The Ohr HaChaim answers that the remedy is contained within the pasuk: “... Do not be afraid, for Hashem is with you.” If a person sincerely desires to be pure, then Hashem’s right hand receives him, he becomes attached to Hashem, and Hashem will defeat the enemy. The key here is that we must sincerely desire to be pure, and we must not be afraid, trusting Hashem. If a person sincerely de-

sires to be pure, then he will do everything within his power to fight off the enemy. We must do everything we can to purify ourselves and do teshuvah, especially now during Elul. As we make our cheshbon hanefesh, we should aim to be as honest with ourselves as possible. This week’s parsha begins, “Shoftim v’shotrim titen l’cha b’chal sh’arecha… — Judges and officers you shall appoint in all of your cities…” (Devarim 16:18). R’ Moshe Feinstein, zt”l, points out that the word “l’cha” appears superfluous. R’ Moshe concludes that the inclusion of the word “l’cha” means the Torah is not only enjoining us to set up a communal system of judges and officers, but that each of us is to appoint ourselves to act as a judge and an enforcement officer over our own behavior. But will it help? Can we ever really change our behavior? Do we have the power to win such a great battle? No, not on our own — but with Hashem’s help, we absolutely can. We must fight as hard as we can to withstand the temptations of the yetzer hara, even though we cannot win the fight on our own. But our Father is with us, and He will pick us up and carry us across, like the father in the story above. Indeed, we are all like little Chany. We see the raging river and we tremble in fear, knowing that we cannot succeed — the yetzer hara will surely sweep us away. But we need not fear. If we cling to our Father, He will carry us across safely.

State Officials Blast Rockland County Republican Party for Anti-Semitic Video Reacting to criticism from the highest-elected officials in the state, the Rockland County Republican party has retracted a disturbing video that accused the Chasidic community of masterminding a plan to take over the county. The nearly three-minute-long video addressing overdevelopment aired on social media on August 28. Set against a backdrop of ominous music and threatening clouds, the video said that Legislator Aron Wieder and his “Ramapo bloc” posed a threat to county residents, including their homes, their families, their schools, their communities, their water supply and their way of life, adding, “If they win. We lose.” New York State Attorney General Letitia James was the first

to publicly denounce the video, releasing a statement saying, “To clearly state that members of the Jewish community are a threat to families and our safety, and that they must be stopped, is despicable and completely unacceptable. Attacking those who are different than we are only breeds hate and makes us weaker.” The New York Times reported that the video was removed within 24 hours. Nick Langworthy, chairman of the state Republican party, called it “the antithesis of what the Republican party stands for.” Governor Andrew Cuomo also took a strong stance against the video, categorizing it as “disgusting.” “This type of attack and incitement against the Hasidic community is the very definition of dis-

crimination and anti-Semitism,” said Cuomo, adding, “There is no excuse for anti-Semitism masquerading as concerns over zoning or development. While this video has since been removed, its impact will still be felt by the members of the Jewish community targeted by their own neighbors.” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was another of the many elected officials who condemned the clip, saying, “The video released by the Rockland County Republican Party is anti-Semitism at its most grotesque. They should be deeply ashamed of using blatant Nazi propaganda in an attempt to incite fear. New York City is committed to supporting and defending our Jewish neighbors.”

Responding to Bus Pass Concerns, East Ramapo Central School District Sets Up Transportation Hotline Hoping to rectify bus pass issues affecting many yeshivah students, the East Ramapo Central School District has set up a dedicated back-to-school command center to resolve all problems as quickly as possible. A spokesperson for the East Ramapo Central School District said that the errors were a result of miscommunications with certain schools. Parents whose children were issued potentially problematic bus passes can contact the command

112 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 4, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

center from now through September 30, at 845-577-6024, between 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday. The command center is also reachable via email at BackToSchool@ercsd.org. New for this year on East Ramapo bus passes is information telling parents which contractor will be transporting their children to and from school, ERCSD school board president Harry Grossman told The Monsey View. Routes to school are designated by the letters “PU” for pickup and

“DO” for drop-off at the end of the school day. The phone number of the responsible bus company is printed directly on each student’s bus pass, giving parents a greater ability to get accurate information about their child’s bus on a day-today basis. Most children in the district will be transported either by Chestnut Ridge Transportation, listed “CRT” on bus passes, or by Student Bus Co., which will be designated by the letter “S” next to a child’s bus route.

CHAPTER TWENTY Recap: Bayla Stockhammer begins to doubt the authenticity of the Korman story, and that there really was a couple named Peretz and Tziporah Genendel Korman, but she realizes that there’s too much money at stake to do anything about it now. In Bratislava, Rabbi Walkin, the head of the Jewish orphanage, offers Theodore Heinke his help in finding the missing Jewish boys. Gustav disappears from Janek Cohen’s home. Bratislava 5708/1948

“What does that mean, he disappeared?” Rabbi Walkin stopped abruptly. “When my wife returned from a shopping trip, she found only Edo at home. He told her that Gustav told him that he had to go, and he just went. And he hasn’t come back.” “How many hours have passed since then?” “It’s almost two o’clock, so it must be over four hours by now. We looked for him in every possible place. I even asked Rothstein to sniff around in the municipal hospital, but we’ve turned up nothing.” “Did he leave you a note? A message? Did he say something yesterday or this morning?” “Nothing.” “Do you think he was kidnapped?” The orphanage director pressed a hand to his forehead. “No. I’m afraid that he went back there of his own accord.” “Back? To that other place?” “Yes.” “I was there just now, meeting with the assistant director, the one who came to

look for them here.” “And you think that if I’m right, and Gustav is there, he would have told you about it?” Walkin didn’t answer right away. “I’m trying to replay the conversation with Heinke in my mind. Even though he didn’t make the effort to be particularly nice, I also got the impression that they are groping around in the dark as much as we are. I can’t imagine that the boy returned to them just a short time before…” he said slowly. “It just didn’t seem that way. On the other hand, I can’t be sure. Maybe he’s a good actor or an experienced liar. But why do you think that the boy would run back there?” “He’s been acting very… lost these past few days.” Janek sat down opposite Rabbi Walkin, pushing aside the half-filled ashtray. “We felt that he wasn’t finding himself.” “Like lots of children in his situation.” “Yes,” Janek agreed. “But he once tossed the idea out at us in such a matterof-fact way that it made me bristle. He didn’t understand what we can possibly offer him if we aren’t his parents and we

September 4, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 119 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

have no idea how to bring him to them.” “And he was happy in that place?” “Based on his stories, they seem to have treated him nicely.” “My question is,” Walkin thought aloud, “that let’s say you’re right and he went back there. How much time will it take for them to extract from him the identity of the person who smuggled him and Edo out, and where Edo is right now?” “Well, he won’t mention you at all because he’s never met you. Or anyone else from the committee. He knows only Emil, and he’s long gone.” “Right, but if Heinke connects the dots between my visit and the abduction and the child’s return, he won’t need much to prove that our orphanage, along with all the members of the Va’ad Hatzolah, are involved in this story.” Janek nodded. “Indeed, my wife is very afraid. We want to leave.” “Leave?” “Yes.” Janek’s gaze was direct, steady and very open. “I can’t put myself at risk, and I certainly can’t do it to my wife. She’s the only one left from her family, and I am the only one from mine.” “Very understandable,” Walkin said. “And what will we do with Edo?” “If we can’t find a better place for him, we will take him with us.” Janek’s voice did not sound confident at all. “No, there’s no reason for you to take the risk now, if indeed Gustav might be, at this very moment, giving over the relevant information to the management there. The last thing we need is for you to be caught while traveling with Edo. You won’t be able to deny anything.” He was thoughtful for a moment. “Go,” he finally said. “Go with your wife. I suggest that you travel to Senico; Aryeh Lieber lives there, and he’ll be happy to host you. A few Jewish families like us have settled in the city, and you’ll be comfortable there. I’ll speak with Benny, and we’ll continue cautiously searching by ourselves. We’ll update you about any developments. If necessary, we’ll send Edo to you there. He acclimated well with you, didn’t he?” “Baruch Hashem, yes. He really did.” Yerushalayim

Shaina Rosen, the principal of the Zichron Elchanan school, vacillated about whether to go to the wedding or not. In the end she decided to go. She didn’t think that her presence there would embarrass the mechutenistas; after all, although she’d given them permission to use the school gym, it wasn’t like she owned the building or anything. She also didn’t think they would suspect that she was there to make sure they were taking care of the place properly. It was just natural for her to come by to wish mazel tov to the baalei simcha at a wedding being held there. She left the house and headed for the bus stop, her thoughts on the wedding the entire time. She

hoped that the tablecloths being used were long enough and nice enough to conceal the fact that the “tables” were just students’ desks. It was a good thing the school had lots of plastic chairs and that most of them were new; what hashgacha that they had just replaced their stock of chairs at the end of last year! She just hoped that someone had arranged a better chair for the kallah. While it was true that with a beautiful chair cover even a plastic chair could look quite elegant, it still wasn’t regal enough for a kallah. Too bad she hadn’t asked the Stockhammers more details about what they were planning. Perhaps she could have helped out more… “Shaina?” Nechama Kagan tapped her cousin, who was still a few minutes away from the hall, on the shoulder. “So good to see you! Are you on the way to the wedding?” “Yes. I guess you are, too?” “Yup. I’m so glad I met you. I wanted to apologize for having worried you for no reason, apparently. If I understood correctly, that story about the chasan being sick is not at all true. Not that I’m sure what the real story is, but—” “They said they got a special grant, contingent upon the fact that they would get married today.” Shaina stuck to the story that Mrs. Stockhammer had told her on the phone. If that’s what she had been told, as far as she was concerned, that was the truth. She wasn’t going to nose around to try to find other versions of the story, juicy as they might be. “It’s possible that it’s really true. From what I understand, they bought the couple a huge apartment in the center of Bnei Brak.” “Could be.” Shaina remained unmoved. “I didn’t ask a lot of questions. I just apologized that the walls of the gym haven’t been painted for more than two years, and that it’s quite old. I hope it’s not bothering them too much now.” “Anyone who gets a hall for free says thank you and doesn’t look at the peeling walls,” Nechama said. “Though it’s hard for me to imagine Bayla, the mechuteniste, marrying off

122 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 4, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

AGAINST THE BACKDROP OF THE SIMCHA INSIDE, THE PEELING WALLS AND PLASTIC CHAIRS PROBABLY STAND OUT EVEN MORE... her son in a hall with peeling walls… But I guess sometimes you have no choice in matters like these...” “Oh, look. I see they posted signs indicating the men’s and women’s entrances.” Shaina Rosen knew her school yard quite well. It had an odor that changed from time to time. During the stormy winter days, it smelled of water, mud and wet leaves. At the peak of the hot weather, there was the smell of dryness and heat, almost a scorching smell. At the beginning of the year, there was a scent — and Shaina was positive that it was something real, not imagined — of crisp new clothes and briefcases and shoes. But this smell of spicy fried chicken and steamed vegetables was not something that she ever remembered smelling there. These mouthwatering smells, together with the band’s music and the tinkle of silverware emerging from the windows, as well as the crowd of women standing in the courtyard, really generated the happy image of a regular wedding hall. “Doesn’t look like your familiar school, does it?” How was it that Nechama was always able to put her thoughts into words? That was something that had always drawn them to one another in the past. And it was this same something that also caused their relationship to constantly hit ruts. “It really looks like a simcha hall,” Shaina agreed. “I’m happy for them. I was afraid it would look more like a school function. I’m glad that the guests’ first impression is that of a regular simcha.” Nechama strode toward the right side of the school building, with

Shaina behind her. Shaina didn’t glance at her own locked office or at the darkened classrooms. She didn’t recognize any of the women who passed her on the stairs, but some of them apparently recognized her and nodded in greeting. The drumbeats of the band grew stronger, and to her unprofessional ear, the music sounded very professional. She hoped that at least the band would be able to compensate for the less-thanpretty décor of the old gym. And that the photographer would skillfully choose elegant backdrops for the pictures. One of the windows in the room had a pretty decent curtain, but it was also rather old… Shaina was suddenly very embarrassed to enter the “hall,” like a mother who is ashamed to walk into the classroom on PTA night to speak to her rambunctious daughter’s teacher. “Hello, Mrs. Rosen,” a woman greeted her. “And mazel tov!” “Simchos by all!” Shaina replied. “Did I arrive in the middle of the meal?” “No, they finished the main course a few minutes ago.” No more excuses, she told herself. Just go in and see your gym in all its shabby shame. Against the backdrop of the simcha inside, the peeling walls and plastic chairs probably stand out even more, but at least you can console yourself with the fact that because of this hall — and to your credit! — the chasan and kallah are receiving some financial support… She entered, automatically turning her head to the right of the door, where the inside knob constantly slammed into the wall, creating a large and ugly hole. From there, she knew, there was a long strip of peeling paint that reached all the way to where the old Chanukah chagigah signs from the past few years still hung. But the hole wasn’t there, and beyond it, the colorful signs had also disappeared. In their place was fabric in hues of blue and silver, draped from the ceiling along the length of all the walls. It was topped with a regal-looking blue valance that was at least ten feet high. Shaina raised

her gaze — yes, someone had managed to go all the way to the ceiling in order to cover the entire wall in this fabric! She lowered her eyes again. The hall was divided with a latticed wooden mechitzah, but she imagined that the other side of the hall was a mirror image of this one: Dark carpets covered the scratched parquet floors, and “her” plastic chairs were encased in glittery blue and silver chair covers. The oval tables — which were certainly not hers — were covered in silver linen tablecloths, and rising from the center of each one was a massive candelabra, covered with blue flower balls with dozens of little candles twinkling inside elegant glass cups. Now that the meal was over, the tables were full of dirty place settings, but even now, Shaina could see that all the tableware was top quality. Along the wall that faced the door was a three-tiered bar, but she could not see it well from where she was standing because a mass of women stood between them. Suddenly, out of nowhere, her cousin Nechama Kagan appeared at her side. “It’s amazing what they did here!” she said. “It’s like a real banquet hall! I’m telling you, this place is no less gorgeous than the fanciest halls that I know of! Come, Shaina, let me introduce you to Bayla Stockhammer, so you can see firsthand the person you did this chesed for.” “Chesed…” Shaina murmured, but her sotto voce remark was drowned out by the thudding drums. To be continued...

North Carolina’s 9th District Special Election BACKGROUND: A special election is scheduled for Tuesday, September 10, in the 9th Congressional District of North Carolina. The 9th District includes the southeastern suburbs of Charlotte and stretches to Fayetteville in the eastern part of the state. The election is a redo of a November 2018 congressional elec-

tion that was nullified due to the discovery of possible illegal activities by then-Republican-candidate Mike Harris. The race features GOP nominee State Senator Dan Bishop in a face-off against Democrat Dan McCready. McCready is a Marine Corps veteran who came within one thousand votes of winning the 2018 race. The district has been safely Republican since 1963, and in 2016, Trump carried the district by more than 11 points. However, the race is considered a tossup, and recent polling shows McCready leading Bishop by as much as 4 percentage points. WHY IT MATTERS: Being that Democrats already

have a significant majority in the House of Representatives, this election will have little impact on the makeup and governing ability of Congress. However, North Carolina 09 is considered a bellwether district with real implications for the 2020 presidential race. Much of the race is being fought over national issues. Out-of-state money from super PACs (political action committees) is pouring into the coffers of both candidates. Democrats are trying to frame the election as a referendum on the policies of the Trump administration. Republicans are attempting to paint McCready with the brush of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and the squad. Additionally, over the past few years, North Carolina has seen an influx of immigrants from red states, and this election may be an indicator of the future voting patterns of the state as a whole. In a testament to the importance of the race, President Trump intends to campaign in the 9th District on the eve of the election and hold a Make America Great Again rally at Fayetteville airport on September 9. However, the impact of Trump's visit remains to be seen. His approval ratings in the district are currently net negative, with 47 percent approving of the president's performance and 48 percent disapproving.

Trade War Intensifies BACKGROUND: On Sunday morning, a new 15 percent tariff on Chinese goods went into effect. Unlike previous tariffs, these are likely to impact the U.S. consumer directly. These tariffs will target everyday household items such as clothing, toys, home goods and electronics, costing the average American household, as per JP Morgan’s estimate, $1,000 annually. President Trump told reporters that the administration is holding trade talks with the Chinese, and he tried to strike an overall positive tone. However, the administration is still sticking with its hardline policies and tough negotiating stance. WHY IT MATTERS: The outcome of the Chinese trade war will directly impact the 2020 election. Should Trump successfully wrest concessions from

the Chinese on intellectual property rights and import duties, it will be a significant policy accomplishment. It will be a successful resolution to a decadesold problem and a fulfillment of a central campaign promise. However, should the Chinese hold tough and refuse to bend to the U.S. demands, Trump will find himself in a precarious situation. The tariffs will likely weigh on an already shaky economic environment. Trump will be faulted for the pain the tariffs are causing to rural farmers and will cause the American consumer. Additionally, it will negatively impact the carefully crafted image of Trump as a master negotiator. However, it is unlikely that Trump will be hammered on trade policies from the Democratic candidates for president. A tough stance on Chinese trade is actually in line with many of the more liberal-minded candidates, such as Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. Historically, the Republican party has been the party of free trade and open markets and has been adverse to any types of tariffs. By fighting a battle that aligns with the views of his opponents, Trump may be insulating himself from intense political blowback and criticism.

Gillibrand Withdraws From Race BACKGROUND: New York Senator Kristen Gillibrand announced that she is withdrawing her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination. Gillibrand focused her campaign on women's issues such as equal pay and paid family leave. She criticized Joe Biden for his 1980 opposition to expanding the child tax credit. Even though women make up approximately 60 percent of the Democratic base, her campaign failed to attract the necessary enthusiasm and support to make her campaign viable. WHY IT MATTERS: According to Nate Silver of

FiveThirtyEight, Gillibrand likely withdrew from the race at this point to stay in the good graces of Democratic party leaders. She possibly decided that it was prudent to save her political capital for a possible future run for governor of New York State. It is also probable that she withdrew to aid her friends and political allies Kamala Harris and Corey Booker.

Ensuring that Families Feel Cared For

A Look at the All-New Hamaspik Theragen Clinic

Since 2011, the New York State Hamaspik Association (NYSHA) has operated the NYSHA Clinic—an “Article 16” therapy center, named for the section of state law that allows it, providing a full range of therapies for people with special needs. But now, as part of NYSHA’s ongoing mission of positive responsiveness and flexibility, NYSHA has rebranded its NYSHA Clinic “Article 16” therapy center as Hamaspik Theragen: a new name for new-and-improved therapeutic services, more grassroots outreach and a community flagship attracting and retaining the finest professionals. Hamaspik Theragen’s target audience is anyone who has graduated school aged 18 to 21 and above. (Older people are welcome, too!) As long as they are eligible for OPWDD services, Hamaspik Theragen wants to help as many people as possible. There are two reasons for school graduates to continue therapy: One, to keep progressing, and two, to maintain their current level of ability. All the effort the educational system puts into students with special needs can be lost if therapy doesn’t continue. Hamaspik Theragen’s staff get that—they have the experience working with the population in question. All of Hamaspik Theragen’s physical therapists (PTs), occupational therapists (OTs) and so on specialize in the intellectual/developmental disability (I/DD) population. So what exactly does Hamaspik Theragen provide? Besides the classic standards of OT and PT, Theragen provides speech-language pathology (SLP, a.k.a. speech therapy), nutrition counseling, psychiatry and psychological evaluations, and social work. Anyone younger than 18—meaning, teenagers and children with disabilities—can also receive psychiatry services and psychological evaluations. The clinic’s biggest success so far has been simply growing and meeting the needs of the community. With extensive outreach underway, particularly to community schools and transition counselors, families are learning about Hamaspik Theragen—with many reacting, “I didn’t know that an Article 16 clinic in our area existed!” And when that happens, and more people with disabilities and families are served, families feel taken care of—and Hamaspik Theragen truly feels that it’s doing its job.

BY: MALKY LOWINGER Can you spell auslaut? Erysipelas? Bougainvillea? Aiguillette? Neither can I. But these were just a few of the random, obscure words that were spelled correctly by twelve-, thirteen- and fourteen-year-old kids at the 2019 Scripps Spelling Bee last May. These brainy kids became the co-champions of America’s most celebrated spelling bee, which resulted in their achieving nationwide fame and a hefty $50,000 grand prize! The concept of spelling bees, those official competitions in which contestants are asked to spell words correctly, originated in the United States, and is unique among English-speaking nations because, let’s face it: Figuring out how to spell an English word merely from its pronunciation can be quite challenging.

HISTORY

The first spelling bee known to us was held in this country in 1808. The concept was widely accepted, leading to the first National Spelling Bee competition in 1925. It was in 1941 that the Scripps Howard News Service decided to sponsor the competition, turning it into a highly anticipated national event that gets plenty of media attention. It is called the Scripps National Spelling Bee to this very day. Here’s how the Scripps Spelling Bee works: Every year, 11 million students across America compete in local spelling competitions. Winners proceed to the regional, and then statewide, competitions until local champions advance to the national championship event, which was held this past year on May 30 at the Gaylord Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

UNPRECEDENTED EIGHT CHAMPIONS If you’ve ever watched a spelling bee, you know that it can be an emotional and nerve-wracking experience. The competition is fierce and tensions run high. Even in the audience, parents

pray, siblings squirm, and the atmosphere is intense. It’s not for the faint of heart. This year’s competition was especially fierce. Five hundred and sixty-five contestants competed during the four-day event, with groups of spellers being eliminated in round after round. The final showdown began at 10 a.m. and continued until past midnight. In the end, a total of eight co-champions managed to survive eight grueling rounds of spelling challenges. This marked the very first time that the championship was awarded to a group of winners. But not to worry. Each of the winners took home a championship trophy and a $50,000 cash award.

work and dedication,” he told an interviewer. “I typed up words from the dictionary and created spreadsheets, and then I’d review them after I was done.” His winning word was koinonia (huh?) which he easily spelled, because he had studied and memorized it while preparing for the competition. So is it all about memorization? Not really, says former spelling bee judge Linda Wood. “The way the children learn the words,” she points out, “is not just by rote and memorizing, but through etymology and learning roots, pronunciations, and multiple definitions.” Ananya Vinya, the 2017 champion, says it’s not just about spelling — it’s about knowledge. “By learning spelling,” said her father in a re-

GETTING READY

There’s a certain fascination in watching these focused youngsters easily rattle off the spelling of strange words like pendeloque and cernuous. How do they do it? Clearly these children are exceptionally bright, but there’s more to it than that. Fourteen-year-old Karthik Nemmani from Dallas won the competition in 2018. He says he spent considerable effort in preparing for the bee. “It requires a lot of

152 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 4, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Spelling bees have nothing to do with actual bees. In fact, the word “bee” here refers to a gathering of people who come together for a common purpose. The word originated from a Middle English word “bene,” which means a gathering of people who participate in an event together.

SPELLING THEN AND NOW By: Rikki Klein

We’ve all heard the lament that today’s kids can’t spell. With the attitude of so many of the younger generation being “I don’t need to know how to spell; I’ll just use spell-check,” it’s no wonder that they can’t. Today’s standards are pretty high, but with no remorse over the lack of knowledge in this area and no desire to improve, some children are not motivated enough to become proficient spellers. That’s quite a contrast to children of over 100 years ago. The words to the right were part of a very comprehensive test, known as the Common Exam, given to thirteenyear-old students in the Bullitt County Schools (mostly one-room schools) in 1912. Students were required to memorize a vast amount of information in various subjects, and were urged to take these tests very seriously, as test results would affect their future schooling. It’s ironic to note that there’s a typo on the master spelling list. Endeavor was spelled as eneeavor due to a typesetting error. Maybe some things don’t change after all.

cent interview, “she’s been learning a lot of languages. She’s been learning a lot of geography, country, minerals, mythology and medicine. So she’s been learning a lot about the world through words and spelling.”

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE BEE? When the fanfare subsides and the inter-

views are over, what happens next to these spelling champions? Are this year’s eight cochampions destined for greatness? Does winning a spelling competition prepare one for life? Is there any practical purpose in learning to memorize the spelling of words such as scherenschnitte, which, chances are, one will probably never put to good use? Some say no. There’s a small but vocal anti-bee movement who insist that memorizing words is a useless activity and a waste of time. It won’t help these kids gain critical thinking

and analytical skills that they can use in the future. It just fills their brains with lots of worthless information. Also, they worry that the pressure on these kids to succeed can be overwhelming. They are, after all, performing in front of many people — about a million viewers watch the competition! The pressure is huge. The disappointment when things don’t work out well can be devastating. Others disagree. Valerie Miller is a past spelling champ who is a writer and editor today. She says her spelling bee experience helped her gain confidence and poise and jumpstarted her interest in a career based on words. Many former spelling champs have gone on to lead successful professional lives, says James Maguire, who actually tracked former champions and wrote a book about it called American Bee: The National Spelling Bee and the Culture of Word Nerds. “Whatever the menu of things they’re going to do,” he says, “that skill of single-minded focus is going to help them. Not only can they do that — they can do it under pressure.” According to Maguire, “More than half a dozen former champs from the past two decades excelled in math and science and went on to become physicians.” Some of the kids really enjoy the thrill of a competition. Ned Andrews, the 1994 spelling champ, says he still loves a mental challenge and is a “longtime regular entrant” in another running competition. Another former champ, Srinnivas Ayyagari, is today an attorney seeking a job in a highly competitive field. He says that because of his experiences

as a youngster, he’s used to tough competition. “There’s something that got lit at a very young age about pushing myself against the best,” said Ayyagari, “and feeling like I had a reason to do that.” Whether they are doctors or lawyers or just plain regular folk, former spelling bee contestants gain certain qualities, including performance poise, an appreciation of hard work and a love of language. And while the pressure may be overwhelming, it’s not much different than the pressure felt by youngsters who excel at other competitions or perform in musical productions. Spellers who make it to the final rounds generally learn how to win and lose gracefully, and to do so with confidence. According to one observer, spelling bees provide the opportunity for children who lack prowess in other areas to shine.

WORDS ARE POWERFUL TOOLS These days, most cellphones and computers are equipped with spell-check, so knowing how to spell properly is quickly becoming a dying art. You can write a letter, a book report, or even a thesis, and let the laptop decide whether ratatouille is spelled with two l’s . But knowledge is power, and words are arguably our most powerful tool of communication. Using them properly and spelling them correctly are skills that are invaluable and will serve us well for the rest of our lives.

My earliest association of a dictionary is that of an oversized red volume with yellowing pages. Between doing research for school assignments, looking up unfamiliar terminology we’d come across in books, and vigorous pronunciation bets, it was likely the most frequently used book in its section of our bookshelf. Later on, when my lightweight pocket version of Webster’s traveled to and from my little cubby in school, I wondered how the content of the trademark red volume could possibly have been made to fit into that little paperback. Fact is, the two were not all that similar.

THE FIRST AMERICAN ENGLISH-LANGUAGE DICTIONARY The original Webster’s Dictionary, compiled by Noah Webster, was completed in 1825. Webster spent 22 years compiling the data, during which he learned 26 new languages! There was a grand total of 70,000 words detailed in that first edition, around 50 percent of which had never been published in an English dictionary before. After three years of further editing and improving, the first American Diction-

Different variations released by dictionary publishers today include medical dictionaries, expanded editions, bilingual (translation) varieties, and a selection of abridged versions for convenient lookup and easy transporting. This explains the difference in size between the red dictionary back home and the softcover edition preferred by students nationwide.

ary of the English Language was published in 1828, priced between $15 and $20 (equal to a whopping $350 to $480 today!) per copy. Despite its hefty price and the impressive 2,500 copies sold, excessive printing costs at the time meant little profit at the end of the day, and Webster was forced to mortgage his home to finance his second version, which included an additional 5,000 words. Sadly, Webster died not long after its printing, at which point the two Merriam brothers purchased the dictionary rights and continued working on it under their new company name: Merriam-Webster. This brand remains popular today as Merriam-Webster continues to publish both print and electronic (Hangman, anybody?) dictionaries.

may find it interesting to know that there are people who actually get paid to carefully read through circulars, books and magazines during their nine-to-five jobs. These linguists, called lexicographers, are employed by dictionary publishing houses to serve as the intellects behind the myriads of definitions included in dictionaries. With utmost attention to detail, they single out and notate new words used by the English-speaking population, while

identifying words that are obsolete and should be omitted from subsequent editions. Lexicographers renew their data by adding updated words and researching origins and usage of older words. Although dictionaries are relied upon by many professors as the authority on word lists, they count on the general public to help them remain current. Anyone with evidence relating to the usage of words presently being researched is asked

If you’re a regular dictionary-reader, you already know that there are quite a few Yiddish words that have been sufficiently integrated into the English-speaking world to qualify as a dictionary entry. Some examples of these Yinglish (now that should be in the dictionary!) words are bubkes, chutzpah, glitch, schmaltz, schlep, bagel, kvetch and zaftig. Based on the muddle of Yiddish and English heard around us, there will surely be more added in the coming years.

LONGEST WORD Currently, the longest word in major English language dictionaries is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, which refers to a lung disease contracted by the inhalation of very fine silica particles, specifically from a volcano. Medically, it is actually the same ailment as silicosis, but for some reason, the disease merited a record-worthy name.

In the 1940s, many of the words added to dictionaries were related to World War II, reflecting the topic dominating the thoughts and expressions of people during that time. Words added between 1940 and 1945 include saturation (bombing), jeep, bandits (hostile aircraft), flying bombs and cannibalizing (reusing old components). In contrast, new words in recent years emit a carefree tone, mirroring the dominating culture. Some examples are Sudoku, crowdfunding, selfies and declutter.

to submit their information to dictionary companies. With new additions, the overall rule is that a word is considered for inclusion after having appeared five times, in five different places, over

FAKE WORDS Don’t take every word you see in the dictionary at face value, since fake words have managed to make their way in there over the years. Although lexicographers are known to be extremely meticulous, human error will always exist. Below, find some of those ghost-words that have been listed in the Webster, Oxford and other dictionaries.

a period of five years. To keep track of this, each potential new word is carefully recorded and assigned to an editor who will follow its usage and frequency of use for a span of five years. This means that in order

to get that word you coined (and believe will greatly enhance the English language) included in the dictionary, the trick is getting people to use your expression, especially in print.

DORD – density Dord first appeared in the Webster dictionary in 1934 and remained there until 1939, when an editor realized the word’s lack of historical basis.

ABACOT – Cap of State, made like a double crown, worn anciently by the Kings of England This word found its way into many major dictionaries from the year 1664 and on, and almost 300 years later, the primary editor of the Oxford English Dictionary uncovered that it was actually an error based on the word bycoket, which means a hat with a high crown and wide brim. At this point, abacot has rejoined the dictionary as a variant of bycoket.

MOMBLISHNESS – muttering talk The definition of this word is similar to the word mumble, which could explain the scribal error. The correct word should have been the plural of ne-moubliemie, a French term for the forget-me-not flower.

ESQUIVALIENCE – the willful avoidance of one’s official responsibilities This word was first found in the second edition of the New Oxford American Dictionary, and was exposed as a fake word by an investigator who heard there was a fake word in that edition beginning with the letter E. When he came to the conclusion that the ghost word was esquivalience, he placed a call to the dictionary’s editor-inchief, who confirmed that it was so. It turns out one of their editors had invented the word, to be used as a method of detecting a fraudster’s attempt to steal their dictionary’s content.

FEEL THE DIFFERENCE.

ON YOUR FEET. IN YOUR WALLET.

In the greater scheme of running a paper, the simplest aspect should be coordinating a Boggle competition. No research, no interviews, no headaches; draw up a diagram of letters — the base word being one that matches our theme (yes, Boggle fans, you got us!) — and format it on the page. At week’s end, look through the stack of papers, pick out the highest-scoring submissions, and you’ve got a winner without much to-do. Once upon a time, before The Monsey View became a household name, we thought so too. Here at Boggle headquarters, the journey to the present point of stability (if we can even call it that) has been full of twists and turns. We invite you to enjoy this peek behind the scenes of what it takes to run this popular column. The Monsey View was five weeks

168 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 4, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

old when we launched our Boggle game. It required little on our part: a grid with strategically placed letters, a point system and two rules to play by. Playing Rules: No adding “s” at the end of a word. All words must appear in the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Simple enough, right? Still that first week the entries came pouring in, until papers upon papers piled up into an impressive stack on the brand-new desk. Some time before print on Tuesday, we sorted all submissions, selected the one with the highest score, carefully read through the list, and in Issue 6, announced the winner and their total points. And we did the same the next week, and the next. The protest wasn’t long in coming. Which self-respecting word enthusiast accepts the indignity of falling tens of points below the winner without a good fight? “How do your winners get so many points? I think you need to make sure they’re not cheating.” “Do you allow Boggle solvers? The winner surely used one to get to this number.”

And so we specified that computer Boggle solvers were not allowed to be used. Not that it solved things all that well... As winner after winner was announced, with respectables scores near their names, like a storm, the protest gathered steam and erupted. Our readers didn’t trust us!

declaration from our diehard fans. By week 11, we were ready to take the plunge. Tediously, we typed up every last word the winner scored. Not a simple task, even today. With competition running high, there are always bound to be several contenders at the very top, which requires working with ten or so lists simultaneously, adjusting points and reshuffling the pile to determine which of these high scorers is actually the winning entry. And once we displayed those lists, oh, the scrutiny we came under! From week to week, we were astounded at how very astute Monsey Boggle fans are. Nothing slipped under the radar, not a missing point, not an ineligible word… Not, Heaven forbid, a double entry. Our fans were pas-

sionate about Boggle, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. We were passionate about it too! But oh, the work… and the countless correspondences. Do you think our fans liked what they saw in those lists? “Thank you for the fun Boggle game. Just wondering where people pick up such unique, unheardof words?”

Which self-respecting word enthusiast accepts the indignity of falling tens of points below the winner without a good fight?

“Just wondering... I see that the winner has 608 points, and in my dictionary, honour and honoured are not listed, and I checked three different dictionaries! The runnerup could have been the winner. She had 605 points!” “Which schools did these contestants attend? How old are they? What are their credentials? I consider myself a fine linguist, and I don’t know what half of these words mean!”

Many creative speculations were shared with us as to how the lists were amassed. Perhaps dictionar-

ies were being used to search for words. Perhaps people were putting word combinations into electronic dictionaries to see where it would lead them… And Boggle players wanted to know what was allowed and what wasn’t… Because if everyone was getting their words via questionable means, nobody wanted to be the low man on the totem pole. “Everyone I know is busy with the Boggle game! I want to know the exact rules, since my daughter told me that she heard from girls that they look into a dictionary while doing the Boggle. Can you specify the rules clearly?”

“Your rules specify that ‘words may not be found with a computer Boggle solver,’ and that’s why people think that to look into a regular dictionary is fine. Is that so?”

The rabble became so loud that we had to publicly address it, instead of answering reader by reader individually — or we’d need to hire a secretary just to deal with the questions... An Editor’s Bulletin printed in Issue 13 set down the law.

We have received letters from readers who are concerned that contestants are using dictionaries to find their Boggle words. We trust all submissions are completed according to the rules. A dictionary should only be used to confirm a word found on the board or to check for proper spelling before submitting your list.

Despite this neat little declaration, chaos erupted once Issue 13 went to print. The trigger? The word glew.

Five Things We Want Boggle Contestants to Know • We play fair. Very, very fair. If a word was disqualified on your list, the word was also disqualified on every other list. If you lost 2 points, so did every other entry with that word. • We work within our control. We put rules in place, we enforce them and look into the matter when a submission looks off. But quite honestly, we don’t know — and can’t know — whether a person cheated or not. • No need to call in with questions about including or excluding specific words on your list. You can be sure that every word is reviewed and scrutinized, and we’ll adjust your points accordingly. • Legibility makes our job so much easier. Space your words properly. Use a lined sheet. Write clearly. Alphabetize your list. Sort the words in columns. Not only does it make our job easier, but it also gives you a better chance at winning. (We can’t give points for illegible words.) • When faxing, leave a sufficient margin all around your page, as edges often get cropped. When emailing, send your list as an attachment, with all the information (your name, contact number and points) and the word list in the same document, so we get to deal with only one file per entry.

172 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 4, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Before that fateful day, we didn’t even know what it means. But it’s a word we will never forget. As with every word on a potential winner’s list, we consulted our dictionary when the word glew appeared. And we wondered: Does the obsolete variant of glue qualify as a word? If it’s obsolete, is it considered a word? But… if it’s in the dictionary, can it be anything but a word? We decided to honor it. Boy, did we regret it. Phone calls, emails, faxes... “I’m curious, what kind of dictionary do you use, and what edition? I looked all over, even on the computer, and did not find the word glew anywhere.” “What is this word glew you included in the winner’s list? No wonder people get such crazy scores! They make up words.”

We looked at each other helplessly, wordlessly — yes, even the Boggle authorities, who were slowly amassing a new vocabulary (sari, silt, foci, macon) — were rendered speechless. How to explain to all of Monsey the indecisiveness we’d experienced over a word that is obsolete but is in the dictionary — at least in our allinclusive dictionary? We needed rules. We needed clear direction to put an end to every maybe and question. We needed clarity, and the readers were begging for it. And apparently, it didn’t count that we were posting reminders in the Editor’s Bulletin, on a weekly basis at that point, that dictionaries may not be used for finding words. Or any other tools for that matter. “I still feel that you should clarify the rules on the game page, instead of featuring it in the Inbox. These are young teenagers playing, and they need clear rules.”

What if the entire Monsey would use the very same dictionary, we wondered. We selected the newest MerriamWebster paperback edition, made

sure Toys 4 U was stocked with them. And so Issue 14 had a note from the editor again. We received many inquiries regarding the definition of the word glew listed in last week’s Boggle winner’s list. Glew is the obsolete variant of glue, and since it was in the Merriam-Webster’s (online) dictionary, we gave the winner credit for it. As we are experiencing inconsistencies among the different editions of Merriam-Webster, please be advised that we will only be checking the words against the MerriamWebster’s 2014 (unabridged) table dictionary. Review your word lists carefully, as any list with two words not found in the Merriam-Webster table dictionary will be disregarded.

We included a picture of the actual dictionary, and pasted the same note, picture included, at the bottom of the Boggle page, where it sat for weeks on end. No ambiguities this time. Toys 4 U piled the 2014 unabridged collegiate table dictionary at the front of the store, and there it stayed until their entire stock was sold out. What do they say? From the fry-

ing pan…. And into the fire. As we took to the tedious task of painstakingly flipping through the pages of an actual paperback dictionary, searching for each word on a potential winner’s list and squinting for other tenses and word forms, we at first breathed easy, knowing all this work was worth the stunning clarity our contestants now had. One dictionary. Clear rules. Lots of work, yes. A hassle, yes. But, oh, the peace of mind. But an interesting thing happened. While the purpose of the dictionary was to limit the word choices, the entries suddenly looked like they just may be from another language. How do people know these words? We wondered, running through too many lists with unfamiliar words. And when we inquired, calling the phone numbers on submissions in puzzlement, we learned that it was our hand-picked much-thought-about dictionary that had created this mess. Because you see… these ambitious children (and children-atheart) admitted that they’d find letter combinations on the board, and then plow through the dictionaries for words beginning with those

September 4, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 173 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

letters — and then check potential words against the boards to see whether they appear there… These kids were so ambitious, that each Wednesday we’d field phone calls from anxious students calling from school to find out who the winner was… Oh, and the feedback! “I admit that the weekly Boggle contest does leave me scratching my head. I am college-educated and a professional writer, and yet when I look at the winning entry every week, I see more than just a handful of words included that I am completely unfamiliar with, and that does leave me wondering. But life isn’t all about winning, and I applaud you for coming up with an engaging, popular weekly feature that is helping us all expand our vocabularies in a fun way.” “Your Boggle game confuses me. First, the words ‎you itemized and I wrote below are NOT in our lexicon or English dictionary. I don’t know exactly from where these people picked them up, and frankly, am quite skeptical that the contestants knew these words at all. I worked hard and enjoyed playing the game, but that was all from my inherent knowledge, and I happen to be a copywriter. These words below, and other words used, seem to be coming out of some electronic device that should not be allowed in your game rules. I, for one, will not be part of this game any longer. Good luck. “Following are some of your erroneous acceptances. See for yourself. It’s laughable and the situation is see-through: Limn, obit, loti, molt, lati, loamy, croci, oaten, synod, cony, bocci, litai, introit, minatory, tabor

—”

And then there was the opposite problem, too: seemingly common words that simply did not appear in the dictionary. “I need to bring to your attention that the word malted is definitely in the dictionary. Some dictionaries have milk after the word malted. All it means is a drink made of milk and ice cream. I think you ought to consider that.” “How can you disqualify the word alec? Have your editors never heard of a smart alec?”

It took us a long time to let those dictionaries go. For a while, we desperately held onto our copy like a float, so as not to drown in the sea of Boggle papers. But when every last bit of fun was sucked out of the Boggle game, and we spent another Monday afternoon (and the evening that followed) hunched over text in font size 7, passing a verdict on yet another ludicrous word, we decided it was time to bid these dictionaries farewell. And when we let the dictionaries go, we got rid of them with a bang, and an iron fist. To make the Boggle game fair to all of our contestants, dictionaries will no longer be allowed in Boggle. Please read the new rules below.

Put your dictionaries away for school, we declared. Write words from the top of your head. Send in your list without a single flip of a page. And how our players appreciated the freedom. “Boggle is so much fun without tediously combing through the dictionary. I’m glad to shelve mine, even

if I did spend considerable effort to obtain one.”

And when we thought we could finally breathe free, a new chapter began: The Era of Senseless Words. Scores of misspellings and otherwise authentic-looking nonwords made their way onto the lists, because readers had no way of checking words they assumed can earn them points. And on top of all the work it created, it also meant a whole lot of disappointed players, since entries would get disqualified at ten non-words… It wasn’t long before we gave permission to use the dictionary for looking up words found, for spelling and authenticity only, and not ever for finding words. But then started a whole new question. “I was looking up a word (for spelling only, I promise), but then came across a word right near that entry, which I realized is on the board. Am I allowed to count it in my score?”

What do you think, dear readers? We simply didn’t know. And this is how we reached a stable point. Our current system is based on rules, trust and our discretion. A dictionary may only be used to review words already found, and not as a tool to aid in word-finding. We trust that our readers are striking this balance. So, week after week, we meticulously review (and discuss, when needed) each potential winner’s list to make sure it’s as fair as possible for every player. And when too many unusual words appear on a specific list, together we decide if the situation calls for disqualifying the board, to work off it, or to get in touch with the one who submitted it. While we wish we’d have the perfect algorithm, we still grapple each week to judge and decide which words are acceptable, which are

Before that fateful day, we didn’t even know what it means. But it’s a word we will never forget.

174 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 4, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

rare, and which were reached via legitimate means. We still weigh and measure to decide whether a word is appropriate or not refined enough to be included in the list…. Do we still get complaints? Yes, we do. Are they legitimate? Very often, yes. “Honestly, do you believe the winners didn’t use dictionaries or online solvers to get those words? I try to compete every week with the

winner, and there are always words that aren’t in our community’s vocabulary. Bier, emir, jibe, luge... I mean, really? I don’t compete to win; I don’t even submit my list. I play just for the fun of it. But aren’t the honest entries falling by the wayside?”

But when we’re told, “We’re word geeks. As a family of hardy Scrabble and word game players, there are so many words we recognize by now…” are we really supposed to disqualify a le-

gitimate entry just to level the playing field? At least we know that we’ve tried it all, and that this system is the only one that works. So for now, this is how The Monsey View plays Boggle. If you can think of a more effective system, one that can circumvent all the issues that have cropped up over the years… please drop us a line! We may just have the perfect job for you.

Our brains work in mysterious ways. Sometimes they hold on to the most trivial things — and let go of important ones. By using mnemonics, we encourage our minds to remember those bits and pieces that we definitely don’t want slipping away. Mnemonics are memory devices that transform dry and forgettable pieces of information into more memorable forms. These can be songs, rhymes, images, acronyms or sentences. Most of the time, the funnier the construction of the mnemonic, the more likely you’ll remember it!

Music is a very powerful tool in terms of memory retrieval, and that’s why you’ve probably been singing song mnemonics ever since you entered preschool. Typically, that’s how children absorb the alef-beis, the ABCs, the order of the Pesach Seder, and eventually, the 50 states, the list of U.S. presidents and so on.

Rhyme mnemonics, similar to music mnemonics, take advantage of the way chants, rhymes and short little poems manage to settle themselves into our memory. (You know how difficult it is to get rid of annoying little jingles that replay endlessly in your mind...) Some popular examples would be: Thirty days has September | April, June and November… or I before E | Except after C | Or when sounded as A | As in “neighbor” and “weigh.”

The next kind of mnemonic, referred to as an image mnemonic, works very well when try-

ing to remember the definition of a word, the name of a person, or other nugget of information. To create an image mnemonic, piece together an image, creating one component for each part of the word or name, and bingo! There you have your mnemonic. Here’s an example: You cannot, for the life of you, remember the difference between stationary and stationery. To help you remember that stationary with an “a” means to remain in one place, picture a large, three-dimensional letter A surrounded by cement blocks. It can’t move, now, can it? Here’s another example: You just met a person by the name of Aryeh Weinberg. You know you’re going to forget his name — but really don’t want to. To create an image mnemonic for his name, picture a lion (for Aryeh) standing in a puddle of wine (for Weinberg). Once you associate this particular mental image with this particular person, you’ll have a very hard time forgetting his name...

Creating an acronym to remember a short list is a very popular type of mnemonic. Think of your grammar teacher listing the FANBOYS (representing the list of coordinating conjunctions: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so), or your science teacher introducing you to Roy G. Biv (representing the colors on the spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). Acronyms can be very useful if you’re stepping

into the grocery for a few things — without a list — and really, really don’t want to forget that you need BAMS, or bread, apple juice, milk and sugar.

The last — and most popular and most fun — mnemonic is the expression mnemonic, which is a great tool that can help you remember the spelling of a word, or a more complex list of items in a group. To use this mnemonic, create an expression, phrase or sentence where the first letter in each word represents either a letter or another word beginning with that letter.

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN! Compose a sentence as an expression mnemonic for either a list of items in a specific group or a difficult-to-spell word, and send it in to comments@themonseyview.com so we can share it with the rest of our readers! In your submission, please include your name, age, phone number and the school you attend. HERE’S MINE TO GET YOU STARTED: To remember the eight parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, interjection), remember to Never pet very angry alligators — promptly cease interaction!

One popular example of this would be: Please excuse my dear aunt Sally (which represents the order of operations in math: parentheses, exponents, multiply, divide, add, subtract). Another fun example, which lists the planets, is this: My very educated mother just served us noodles (for Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune). This method can also be used to remember the spelling of longer words. For example, if the wrong spelling of the word embarrass is always cause for much embarrassment, try to remember this: Every memory brings along rather ridiculous and surprising stories.)

The smooth and creamy Éclair with the perfect taste and texture was the perfect companion on a hot summer day… Well, the good news is that you don’t have to rely on memories of times gone by anymore, as the yumminess is back in stock! The same Klein's Éclair that you have been dreaming of, precisely as you remember it, is back to wow your taste buds again. It’s the exact classic recipe that you know and love - after all, there is no need to tinker or improve on perfection! The Éclair was first introduced decades ago when Klein’s was first carving a name for itself in the kosher market. In fact, the Éclair was the first frozen treat created by Klein’s after the initial line of single-flavor bars hit the market. Fast forward a few decades, and Klein’s still remains the undisputed leader of the kosher ice cream industry. And, although many new and exciting products continue to be churned out by the geniuses in the Klein’s engineering department, the classics - like the Éclair – continue

to enjoy never-ending popularity amongst old and young alike. What is the secret to the Éclair’s success? Perhaps it’s the perfect blend of vanilla, chocolate and crunchy crumbs?

Try it FREE and see what happens!

Perhaps it’s the nostalgia that the taste and aroma of the Éclair elicits? Perhaps there is just no way to know, but the fact remains that the Éclair was - and continues to be - a classic part of a perfect , cool summer! Head on over to your nearest supermarket and pick up a box of classic Klein's Éclairs today to transport yourself back to the classic yumminess that you know and love. The choice is clear: Éclair! Made in USA

Kidophilus

HAPPY GUT, HAPPY KID An oft-neglected area of health is the resident flora in the gut. Resident flora are sometimes called “friendly bacteria.” Many good bacteria exist in the intestines, or gut. They are an important part of the immune system and help keep us healthy. Being living things, these bacteria naturally multiply. However, there are many different bacteria in the intestines and they keep each other balanced. When one strain multiplies, another comes and fights it, ensuring that levels remain constant. But that’s only as long as everything is normal. THE DOWNSIDE OF ANTIBIOTICS When children are sick, they may require antibiotics. And while antibiotics are an indisputable miracle, they do have negative side effects. Antibiotics do not kill only the illness-causing bacteria, but also destroy good bacteria. This leaves all the strains of friendly bacteria out of balance and has a direct effect on overall health. It weakens the immune system and affects the digestive system. It makes it difficult to recoup strength and fight the next round of illness. A common and effective way to combat this problem is by giving probiotics prior to, along with and after rounds of antibiotics. And there’s a problem with that, though. Probiotics are delicate. They are not easily shelf-stable. More, their potency also depends on how and where they are digested.

A NATURAL SOLUTION IN KIDOPHILUS Kidophilus contains quality natural ingredients such as: CHICORY ROOT Kidophilus contains 50 mg of chicory root, which contains inulin fiber, a type of prebiotic that promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut.

BC (BACILLUS COAGULANS) 10 Million CFUs of Bacillus coagulans, or BC. BC is used for healthy digestion.

BC produces lactic acid and secretes fatty acids that help promote the growth of other flora in the digestive tract. It is a natural spore, or self-reproducing cell, and has a natural capsule. This capsule makes BC shelf-stable. More, it ensures that BC only opens in the right environment. BC is naturally resistant to heat, acids, moisture and bile. BC will not be digested before reaching the intestines, and once there, the spores will reproduce and can help in repopulating healthy bacteria.

WHEN AND WHY PROBIOTICS? Probiotics can help soothe upset stomach, aid digestion, and are especially helpful for bouts of diarrhea. Additionally, because of its hardiness, Bacillus coagulans will maintain its potency until it reaches the intended destination, the intestines.

Kidophilus contains all 10 million CFUs in a 2 mL dose. The fruit punch flavor also makes it easy to dispense to children. Can parents boost their child’s health? Now they can, with Kidophilus.
