NOT A TIME TO PARTY

I’m writing in response to the trend of gourmet Nine Day dining that has become so prevalent.

Refraining from eating meat is a halachic expression of the mourning and sadness we should be feeling over the tragic loss of our Beis Hamikdash and the spiritual void that came along with that loss. Gourmet eating during the Nine Days, while not directly violating halacha, is surely opposed to the spirit of halacha. If, to our misfortune, we do not feel or understand what we are missing, let us at least feel bad about that lack and understand that indulging at this time surely does not find favor in Hashem’s eyes.

Gourmet eating, fun and materialism during the Nine Day period is a distortion of what these days are meant to be.

RE: STOP THE HIKING (Inbox, Issue 209) Last week, there was a letter from someone who was concerned about the dangers of hiking. Allow me to share my point of view.

We live in comfort. We have AC, phones and refrigerators. When a blackout occurs, we all panic.

When Suez Water informs us not to drink the water temporarily, we are at a loss.

By taking them on hiking trips, we teach our children how to live in natural surroundings. There are so many teaching opportunities: which water is safe to drink; how it can be filtered; which grass/ berries are edible; how to catch fish (fish is the simplest kosher food —no shechita needed and kosher fish are easily identifiable); how to build a fire using wet leaves; how to cook; how to keep oneself warm; how to keep safe outdoors and

protect oneself from animals; how to manage without electricity; and how to rely on the moon and stars for light and direction.

Hiking also affords us an opportunity to connect with the world around us and explore Hashems’s wonderful creation.

Many of our grandparents survived the war by hiding in the woods for days and weeks — they knew how to get around in the wilderness. They were used to it. They were taught these things.

In my opinion, all schools should take their students hiking.

It’s great exercise in clean, healthy air, and an opportunity for teaching children how to stay safe outdoors. With more education, the number of incidents will decrease, and our children will only benefit.

RE: ABOLISH THE TIPS (Inbox, Issue 209) Dear Mother, I am so sorry that you feel overwhelmed with the expenses of summer. Yes, the cost of summer day camp and tips adds up to a nice fortune.

We are so fortunate to have children, and that our children are able to attend fantastic summer day camps. And yes, the counselors in girls camps and boys camps, as well as the bus drivers, deserve tips. They work, they sweat, they smile to our precious children every day, and they try to give our kids an amazing time.

Would you want to run a camp for one day? I wouldn’t. I am so happy when summer comes and I get to see my children in the summer spirit...

Many of our local stores have exemplary service. Particularly, I’d like to give a shout-out to Generations on Morris Road. I bought a skirt, and the hem came down a few days later. Although this was a company mistake, the owner stitched the skirt for me all by herself. Our heimish stores can have better service than Amazon!

When we address whether a child is on the autism spectrum, we try to determine if his lack of socialization stems from personality and temperament or a developmental or psychiatric issue. If your son would be accepted by his peers and could participate in a game with them and yet he chooses not to do so, he’s more likely to be introverted or perhaps socially insecure or anxious. If, however, his peers perceive him to be odd or strange and they therefore don’t want to play with him, he might have developmental challenges or more serious psychiatric issues.

I would suggest that you invite over one of his peers and observe how he interacts with him. If he seems comfortable and the two children engage in mutually collaborative activities and conversations as equals, you probably have no reason to be concerned. If you see, however, that the other child has to take the lead in picking and doing the activities and relates to your son more like a younger child (i.e., not as an equal, but someone he plays with and instructs as a kind favor) or you notice that the conversations are one-sided (the peer is interested in age/cultureappropriate topics and your son is not), I would advise that you have a proper evaluation conducted.

Parshas Devarim always falls on the Shabbos preceding Tisha B’Av or, as is the case this year, on a Shabbos that is Tisha B’Av. Sefer Devarim is called “Mishnah Torah”, because the entire Sefer Devarim is a repeat of the Torah. Thirty-seven days before his passing, Moshe Rabbeinu gathered all of Klal Yisroel together and spoke to them, recounting all of the events they had experienced as a people. Indeed, the entire Sefer Devarim is the speech of Moshe Rabbeinu as told. Whereas the first four books of the Torah were the words of Hashem, the fifth sefer contains the words of Moshe Rabbeinu himself, which Hashem included in the Torah.

One of the events recounted in this week’s parsha is the incident where Bnei Yisroel had been informed that, because of their sins involving the meraglim, they were condemned to wander for 38 more years in the desert rather than enter Eretz Yisroel as originally planned, bringing the total time spent in the desert to 40 years. At that time, Hashem instructed Bnei Yisroel: “Turn yourselves around and journey into the desert by way of the Yam Suf.” (Devarim 1:40) Returning to Bamidbar where this incident was first recorded, Hashem had even told Bnei Yisroel that they were to leave the very next day to continue wandering in the desert: “Tomorrow, turn back and journey into the desert toward the Yam Suf.” (Bamidbar 13:25) Bnei Yisroel begged for mercy, as it says: “So you returned and wept

before Hashem, but Hashem would not hear your voice, nor would He listen to you. And you dwelled in Kadesh many days, as the days that you dwelled.” Rashi explains that they dwelled in Kadesh for 19 years (Devarim 1:45–46). At first glance, it appears that Bnei Yisroel davened to Hashem but Hashem ignored their tefillos. In reality, no tefillah is ever ignored or wasted, and the Netziv reveals that a closer reading of these pasukim uncovers this truth.

First Hashem told Bnei Yisroel that they would leave the very next day and then wander in the desert for 38 years. Then we see that Bnei Yisroel cried to Hashem. After that, they remained camped at Kadesh for half of the 38 years of their extended punishment. Rather than having to wander for 38 years, they would only have to wander for 19, while the first 19 years would be spent settled in one place, which is far easier. The Netziv explains that because of the tefillos of the Bnei Yisroel, Hashem softened the gezeirah.

Sefer Devarim is not a mere repetition of the Torah. The fact that Hashem includes Sefer Devarim within the Torah shows that it is as much as a part of the Torah as what came before. Sefer Devarim begins, “Eileh had’varim asher diber Moshe el kal Yisroel… — These are the words that Moshe spoke to all of Yisroel…” (Devarim 1:1). Before this time, Moshe always addressed the bnei Yisroel.

Now he addressed kal Yisroel — all of Yisroel. His words were a combination of rebuke as well as instruction and chizuk. The message here was

clear: Tears and tefillos do help.

This lesson certainly applies to times of challenge that we all invariably face. Perhaps we are davening for a person who is ill — regardless of whether that person fully recovers from that illness, every tefillah we daven does count and does make a difference. Our tefillos “work” even if we do not see the effects at all or right away or in the way we wanted, just as Bnei Yisroel davened to enter Eretz Yisroel and were answered with a decrease in the severity of the decree regarding their wandering in the desert.

But our tefillos always count, and that includes times when we are not facing great challenges. In fact, the greatest challenge to our ability to daven is often the feeling that there is nothing to daven for, which is never the case even when things are seemingly going well. It is important that we always daven, no matter what our current life experiences. Feelings of complacency are a grave danger to our ability to daven with kavanah. It does not take much to open our eyes and our hearts to the suffering of others around us, but in particular to our own suffering, especially when we do not feel it. What greater suffering can there be than to be in galus and not feel the pain to the point of crying out to Hashem to take us back?

This Tisha B’Av, may we all focus our thoughts on what we have lost and what we continue to lose by being in galus, and may we all cry out to Hashem to end the galus and bring us home.

These are some of the things we know to be true, based upon the three-pronged litmus test through which the Rambam requires us to examine the claims of the world. He writes that we must ask ourselves about everything: 1. Is this claim easily substantiated by man’s physical senses?

2. Is this claim backed by accepted science?

3. Is there a long-held mesorah upon which this claim lies?

Being a skeptic whom life has taught to reject “mag-

ical thinking” and non-Jewish modalities that rely a healer’s power to “control energy,” ayin hara had always been a questionable topic to me. I’d always held the concept at arm’s length, having heard various opinions about its validity. Never before had I actually examined the mesorah of ayin hara.

And then, one day, I did. And I was surprised at what I found.

Allow me to demystify this vastly misunderstood part of our tradition, with great thanks to Rabbi Yossi Spitzer of Einy Yeshuah, who is a veritable font of information.

IS THERE AN ACTUAL SOURCE IN THE TORAH FOR AYIN HARA? When I first posed this question to Rabbi Spitzer, I was readily assured that pages upon pages can be filled with sources from the Tanach, Gemara, Mishnayos, and even everyday halacha that provide evidence for the existence of ayin hara.

Here are but a few examples that are taken from the Chumash itself.

In the Midbar In Parshas Ki Sisa, Moshe Rabbeinu is commanded to “take” a census of Bnei Yisroel, which Targum Onkelos explains to mean as the physical act of using coins to represent the people, rather than counting them one by one. Rashi explains that the end of the pasuk where Hashem promises that “there will be no plague among them when counting them” is a direct result of using the coins, rather than people.

As Rashi writes, “Ayin hara can affect that which has been counted, and pestilence can come upon them, as we have found in the days of Dovid.” In the second book of Shmuel, we learn that Dovid Hamelech ordered his general Yoav to take a census of the nation; immediately afterward, 70,000 people

died in a plague, which the prophet Gad announced to be a direct result of the counting of people, which brought about an ayin hara.

In the Days of Our Patriarchs When Yaakov Avinu sent 10 of his sons to seek provisions in Mitzrayim, he commanded the brothers to split up and enter through different gates, as Rashi says in Parshas Mikeitz, “So that ayin hara should not have effect on them, because all of them were of pleasant appearance and of great strength.”

Likewise, when Yaakov Avinu blessed Ephraim and Menashe, he bentched them that they should be protected from all “ra” and grow to be numerous (“v’yidgu”) in the manner of fish, which, as Rashi says there: “Like these fish that proliferate and become numerous, and ayin hara has no effect on them.”

Who Can Ayin Hara Affect... and How? “There are three ways for a person to become a recipient of an ayin hara. The first way is by frequent exposure to someone’s jealousy,” says Rabbi Spitzer.

“A stranger passing by who sees a stunning house and feels jealous, but has no connection to the owner and will never see him again, doesn’t create a worrisome ayin hara.

It’s too weak to cause any true harm.

It’s frequent exposure that we are concerned about.”

“The second way of being the recipient of an ayin hara is by having many pairs of eyes focus on you at one time, such as during a simcha.

Even at a joyful occasion where wellwishers are full of positive emotions, an ayin hara can come into being. This is due simply to the fact that so many pairs of eyes are concentrated on the baalei simcha. The energy that creates this type of ayin hara is significantly weaker than one caused by jealousy, but it does still exist.”

The final way an ayin hara is bred, Rabbi Spitzer tells me, is through an overwhelming sense of wonder.

“If we look at what Chana dav-

Anytime people are left with the feeling of “wow!” in regard to a person’s talents, wealth, beauty, etc., the risk of ayin hara needs to be taken into consideration. While these things should be appreciated for what they are, they should not always be put on public display for everyone to “ooh” and “ahh” at. Of course, if talents or other blessings can be used in avodas Hashem, they should be — but it should be done in a humble manner.

Practical Ways to Avoid Ayin Hara “Preventing an ayin hara is not about living your life with crippling fear; it’s about learning how to do things in a low-key way.” Rabbi Spitzer offers, for example, the idea of not including pictures on every upsherin pekel one’s child will be handing out.

“Take pictures and share them with family — but don’t print them on the pekelech to be distributed to every neighbor and cheder yingel.”

Technology, too (among its other issues), provides a means for ayin hara to take root, with “nachas” pictures flying around the globe at super-speed.

On this point, Rav Dessler, au-

thor of Michtav M’Eliyahu wrote: When one is jealous of another and gazes upon him with an ayin hara, this can cause damage. However, justice demands that this will only happen if the recipient of the ayin hara had previously done something to make himself vulnerable to the ayin hara. One possibility would be that he had caused the first person to be jealous of him in a very specific manner.

On this point, however, Rabbi Spitzer does caution against downplaying one’s brachos when others might feel awkward in such a scenario — such as when a childblessed woman refrains from ever speaking of her children with a close, not-yet-blessed friend. “The result of the pain caused from such avoidance is often worse than the ayin hara that might possibly result.

Be normal. Have normal interactions; just don’t live your life making ‘wow!’ statements all the time for everyone to see.”

There are many other ways to create shemirah, I am assured. These include not surrounding oneself with negative people, not making ostentatious simchos, and abandoning the keeping-up-with-the-Joneses way of life.

The Gemara in Eruvin (64b) says that should one attain wealth, he should use a portion of the gains to perform a mitzvah. Rav Dessler wrote that this is an effective method for preventing ayin hara from damaging one’s wealth. He also wrote: It is clear and well-established that one who is not selffocused, is a giver and not a taker, in all of his matters, will not arouse any jealousy.

Few of us are on that level, though we surely can set it as a goal!

Rabbi Spitzer adds that the burden to prevent an ayin hara falls on everyone. While one must obviously work to overcome feelings of jealousy, even in matters of wonderprovoking situations, one has a role

to play. When one experiences awe over something, he should immediately give credit to the Ribono Shel Olam — the one who created that wondrous person or their event.

It says in sefer Arvi Nachal that by acknowledging that Hashem created this person with tremendous wealth, looks or talents, one automatically diverts a potential ayin hara.

“Train your eyes to only look at others positively. If you have an ayin tov, there are sources that say you’ll have siyata d’Shmaya to be around others who also have ayin tovim.”

Tefillah is infinitely important as well. There are many places in davening where we beseech Hashem to protect us from an ayin hara, such in the yehi ratzon after the morning blessings in which we ask for shemirah from, “an evil person, the evil inclination…” and of course, “m’ayin hara.” Likewise, at the end of Shemoneh Esrei, we daven for protection from jealousy and all of its evil offspring. We also pray that we, ourselves, do not become jealous of other people, because, as Rabbi Spitzer points out, the best way to protect ourselves from ayin hara, is to meticulously avoid giving it to others.

Ramapo Police Honors Camp Fun Camper It was an opportunity to say thank you to our boys in blue as members of the Ramapo Police Department paid a visit to Camp Fun to take part in a celebration honoring a wheelchairbound camper.

Campers stood up as a show of respect and gratitude as the officers arrived at the camp, located in the Grandview Elementary School. Speaking in front of the boys and the police officers, camp director Menny Schwab shared Rav Shimon Schwab’s often-repeated words highlighting the importance of respecting and obeying our country’s laws.

Sergeant Chris Youngman, PO David Small, PO Julianne Franklin and PO Larry Cooperstein came to Camp Fun, speaking with the several hundred campers and entertaining them

with a dog show starring K9 Blue, a four-footed member of the Ramapo Police Department. The officers’ visit was part of a send-off for Azi, a camper heading off to spend two weeks at Camp Simcha.

In addition to receiving patches and gifts from the RPD, Azi had the opportunity to sit in a police cruiser and turn its sirens on and off. Both Azi and Camp Fun received certificates of recognition from the Ramapo Police Department.

Giving Azi a day he would never forget was a true Camp Fun moment, said Schwab.

“Azi is a hero because a year or two

ago he was playing in camp as a regular camper, and now he’s in a wheelchair, and he smiles and is happy every day,” said Schwab. “We look up to him and his attitude and how he carries himself in such an amazing way.”

Beware of Scammers Posing as O&R Reps Phone scammers are at it again, this time posing as representatives of Orange and Rockland Utilities.

The Haverstraw Police Department reported that several residents have received bogus phone calls warning them that their service will be dis-

connected due to outstanding utility bills unless they make immediate payments. Those placing the calls have been able to pass themselves off convincingly as O&R representatives, said police, who noted that scammers have been effectively able to manipu-

late Caller ID data so that calls appear to be coming directly from the utility company Anyone receiving a call of this nature is asked to contact O&R Security Services at 845-577-3526 or 877-4344100.

Coyote Warnings in Monsey Area After Attack on Airmont-Mahwah Border Monsey area residents are on the alert after a resident walking just one block south of the New York State border was bitten several times by a coyote.

The Mahwah Police Department said that the attack took place on Friday afternoon at approximately 6:15 p.m.

A woman was walking on Grenadier Drive when she was attacked by the coyote, and then chased the animal away with a baseball bat she found in

a driveway. She was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for her injuries.

Efforts to locate the animal were unsuccessful. The New Jersey Conservation Office was contacted and is attempting to track down the coyote.

Closer to central Monsey, a coyote sighting was reported on Highview Road this past weekend.

Police are urging everyone to be on

the alert for coyotes and to call 911 in the event of any sightings. Those who encounter a coyote are advised to act “as big and loud as possible” and to avoid running away or turning their back on the animal. Further precautions include never leaving small children or pets unattended outside, keeping garbage cans tightly closed and not leaving any food outside that might attract wildlife.

Recap: Tzippy’s parents purchase a beautiful apartment for the couple with Korman’s money, though Eliyahu and Elisheva still can’t shake off their discomfort about the entire deal.

In Bratislava, Theodore Heinke searches for the two missing boys in a Jewish orphanage, whose director, Rabbi Walken, is in close contact with Janek regarding the boys.

“I’ve never heard of a wedding held in a school gym.” Miri was standing in the middle of the gleaming kitchen, studying the central island that she was leaning on. She swiped a finger over the countertop.

“Everything is full of dust,” she said with disgust. “It’s only from far that it looks so shiny. And look at the filthy floor in the space where the refrigerator goes.”

Miri looked at the stained patch.

It was a pretty big area. It didn’t look to her like the size of a regular fridge, but rather of a double-sized one. Is that what her parents had bought for Tzippy? She didn’t really want to ask.

It was enough that they hadn’t even told her about this huge grant at first, for fear that she’d be jealous.

“Peretz’s mother said that we should hire a cleaning company to tackle the kitchen before the appliances arrive.” Tzippy washed her hands, and then pulled out the faucet and squirted the countertop, enjoying the novelty of the multi-setting faucet. “But I cleaned the bedroom

with Mommy yesterday, because we knew the furniture was supposed to arrive this morning.”

“Let’s start arranging your stuff on the shelves. That’s what we came for,” Miri said, trying to get a hold of herself. “So, what were we talking about?”

“The wedding,” Tzippy said lightly.

“Of course people will raise an eyebrow, but I trust my mother-in-law to make sure the wedding will be elegant.”

“It’s true that even the shabbiest hall can be dressed up nicely,” Miri agreed, “but it’s still strange to get married there. Couldn’t his mother find any other place?”

“Everything else was booked. At first we thought we could make the wedding in a shul hall, but none of those ended up being available for the date we needed. The other option was some country club type of place near Rechovot, but Tatty and Mommy didn’t want that, and neither did I. How would my friends get there?”

Even when shopping for her furniture, Mommy had refused to compromise on quality; she’d ordered a very good bedroom set. The only difference was that in the tiny bedroom in Miri’s rented apartment, there was no room for an armoire, and the order had been put on hold, waiting for the final okay before being filled.

Right now she and Yaakov had a plastic closet standing in their hallway — and it blocked the large window.

“Right.” Tzippy unzipped the suitcase and pulled out hangers. “This isn’t really all of my new stuff yet, but I preferred to bring whatever I could now, and not stuff it somewhere at home.

“HE DOESN’T have what to do,” Ulush whispered to Janek. “Take him out a bit.”

“Out?” Janek looked at Gustav, who was pacing back and forth inside the house. He opened and closed cabinets, sat onto a dining room chair, then moved to the armchair, and finally plopped down on the floor next to Edo, who was scribbling something on a paper, his tongue protruding between his lips.

“Yes. He doesn’t want to color, and that’s the only thing I have to offer them. It keeps Edo busy, especially after I gave him your fountain pen. But Gustav...” She rolled her eyes in his direction. “True, there is a small chance that someone will identify him as the missing boy from the orphanage, but I think that a short walk outside, with a hat to cover most of his face, won’t do any harm. He’s getting crabby because he’s so bored.”

Janek approached the two children who were hunched over the brown paper that Ulush had given them. He sat down on a nearby chair. “What are you drawing, Edo?” “A bed.” The younger boy examined his creation replete with blobs of ink, and in his heart, Janek resigned himself to the loss of his pen.

“Whose bed is it?”

“Mine.”

“So where are you?”

The boy smiled sweetly up at him. “I’m not going to sleep now.”

“Oh, of course not. So what is that next to the bed?”

“Gustav made that. He also wanted to draw with the nice pen.”

“What did you draw, Gustav?”

“Nothing,” the boy said. “I tried to remember if I know how to write the Jewish language.”

Well, it did not appear that he remembered.

“If you were only three when you came to the orphanage,” Janek said gently, “then you wouldn’t have known how to write by then.”

“But you told me that they take three-year-old children with a big white cloth to a Jewish school and show them letters with honey.”

Yes, yesterday he had sat with Gustav and tried to recreate any possible memory that was stored deep in the recesses of the boy’s mind from when he was three years old. But he’d encountered only a white fog. Perhaps Gustav came from a family that did not observe Jewish tradition? That was also possible.

“But those three-year-olds still don’t learn to write, usually. They just get to know the letters a bit.”

“Oh.” Gustav’s voice was flat, and Janek’s heart went out to him.

“And you don’t know who my father and mother are?”

“Not yet.”

“So maybe I should just go back to Theodore?”

“To Theodore?” Janek controlled his voice so it didn’t sound any more astonished than it had to. “Why to Theodore? Does he know about your parents?”

“No, he doesn’t. But if you also don’t know who or where they are, then why do I have to be here?” It wasn’t an attempt to be critical of the failing efforts of the searchers.

The question was sincere and innocent, and that’s exactly why it made Janek’s throat sting.

“Because we are Jews, and so

are you,” he said softly. Edo sat quietly, coloring his thumbnail in blue.

“So what?” Gustav asked.

“I don’t know who your parents are, though we are hoping and praying that we find them.

But I do know one thing: Your parents didn’t want you to stay with Theodore.”

“Who told you that?”

“Because Jews don’t want their children to grow up like gentiles.”

“But Theodore is a good person.”

“He was nice to you, and I’m happy about that. But I’m sure that your parents would not have wanted you to stay with him.”

“But Edo’s mother wanted that. She brought him there herself.”

“Edo’s mother?” Janek slid down to the floor next to the boys. “How do you know? Did you see her?”

“Yes. And she was crying.

Theodore didn’t want to take Edo, but...” He smiled, and his words were laced with pride. “I promised him that I’d help take care of Edo, and that I wouldn’t cry at night anymore. You see,” he said sheepishly, “I was little then. I was only about five.”

Suddenly Ulush was also standing there. “You told us that,” she said quietly. “It’s so special. You saved Edo!” “Right.” Gustav kept smiling.

“Did his mother also tell you that?”

“I don’t think so. She was just crying.” He scratched his forehead. “But I think she asked me if I’m Jewish...” He stared at Janek.

“You didn’t find her either?”

“Not yet. But we’re looking.”

Janek stood up decisively from the floor. “Do you want to come for a walk with me, Gustav? We’ll buy a new pen for me, and maybe one for you as well. Do you want me to start teaching you the letters that you learned,” maybe, “when you were three?”

“Yes.” The boy stood up too.

“Wait,” Ulush said. “Give me your scarf, Janek. Not the thick

one, the thin one. It’s not so cold this evening. Wrap it around his head somehow, so his face isn’t so visible.”

The walk with Gustav was productive. The boy returned with a sparkle in his eyes, stroking the stylus pen Janek had bought for him. Ulush gave him brown paper like Edo’s, and he sat for hours sketching abstract figures.

Edo, by contrast, was getting better at drawing. He was also eating better, sleeping better at night, and within a week, his face looked much fuller.

Extensive discussions were held regarding the best way to get the boys out of the city, where they would live after they left town, and where they would go from there. There were lots of people present at these discussions, and the two children were also fully aware of them.

“I’m going to the land of the Jews,” Edo said to Ulush one day as she smeared butter onto his bread. “I’m not afraid of Jews anymore, because you’re Jewish and you’re good.”

“I also want to go,” Gustav interjected. “But what will we do there? We don’t know anyone in that place.”

“You’ll get to know lots of good people there.” Ulush pressed the two slices of bread together. “I don’t know anyone there either, but I would also love to go to Eretz Yisrael. There are good people there whom all of us would be happy to meet, even if we don’t know them yet.”

“You have Janek,” Gustav said, playing with his pen. “Edo and I don’t have anyone.”

“Maybe we’ll find someone,” Ulush said. “Gustav, do you also want some bread and butter, like Edo?” But Gustav wasn’t paying any attention to her question.

“I need to get the paper out of my hiding place,” he whispered, but she didn’t hear him. “The paper from Edo’s mother.”

Cinnamon Crumb Cake The enticing scent of cinnamon will have everyone sniffing their way into the kitchen for a chunk of some ol’-fashioned goodness.

Chocolate Poke Cake The unusual name for this cake comes from the way it gets poked to get the decadent chocolate glaze to ooze all the way down to the bottom of the cake for double the chocolate flavor.

INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS 3 cups flour 1½–2 cups sugar (depending on sweetness preference) 1 cup oil, divided

4 eggs

2 cups flour

1¼ cup sugar

2 tsp. baking powder

¾ cup oil

¼ tsp. salt

¾ cup orange juice

½ cup blanched ground almonds

2 tsp. cinnamon

CHOCOLATE GLAZE

6 eggs ¾ cup soy milk or juice

¼ cup cocoa

1 tsp. vanilla extract

2 tsp. baking powder

¼ cup oil

1 tsp. coffee, optional

1 tsp. vanilla extract

¼ cup hot water

¾ box (12 oz.) confectioners’ sugar

DIRECTIONS 1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and ½ cup oil until crumbly.

2. Remove 1 cup of crumbs, mix with cinnamon and set aside.

3. Add remaining oil and rest of ingredients to crumbs in bowl. Beat well.

DIRECTIONS 1. Beat eggs with sugar and oil. Add orange juice and beat again.

2. Mix flour with baking powder and salt, and add to bowl.

Beat.

3. Add almonds and mix until combined.

4. Preheat oven to 325°. Pour half of batter into 9x13 pan.

4. Preheat oven to 350°. Pour batter into 9x13 pan and bake for 45 minutes.

5. Sprinkle half of cinnamon crumbs evenly over batter.

5. Allow to cool in pan. With a plastic straw, poke holes into cakes at 1–2” intervals. Do not go all the way to the bottom.

6. Carefully pour remaining batter over crumbs, and sprinkle with second half of crumbs.

6. Combine all ingredients for glaze with fork in a small bowl.

Spread half of glaze over cake. (If glaze seems too thick to spread, thin with 1 T. water.) Wait several minutes for the glaze to settle into cake, then pour remaining glaze over top. Allow glaze to set before cutting into squares.

7. Bake for 1 hour or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Chocolate Crumb Cake “Looks can be deceiving” very aptly describes this cake; it’s a lot easier to make than the impression its elegant presentation creates.

INGREDIENTS 2 cups flour

3 eggs

1 cup sugar

¾ cup orange juice

⅔ cup oil, divided

1 tsp. baking powder

2½ tsp. vanilla extract, divided

½ tsp. baking soda

CHOCOLATE MIXTURE 4 T. oil

½ cup sugar

4 T. cocoa

½ tsp. vanilla extract

2 T. flour

½ tsp. coffee

DIRECTIONS 1. In a medium bowl, combine flour, sugar, ⅓ cup oil, and ½ tsp. vanilla with fork until crumbly.

Remove 1 cup of this mixture and sprinkle evenly over bottom of 9x13 pan.

2. Combine ingredients for chocolate mixture in a small bowl or cup and pour over crumbs.

3. Add remaining oil, vanilla and rest of ingredients to crumbs in a bowl and beat until smooth. Pour carefully over chocolate and crumbs in pan.

4. Preheat oven to 350° and bake for 45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Note: If you prefer a marble effect, pour the chocolate over the cake after the batter (rather than over the crumbs). Do not mix. The chocolate will sink into the cake on its own.

It seems these days that wherever you turn various segulos are being mentioned, tried or advertised.

Singles and those waiting for children, especially, get more than their fair share of unsolicited (and probably unwanted) segulah suggestions. In one clever quip, a rabbi shared that “we’ve gone from being the am segulah to being the am segulos…”

den were in the midbar and were plagued with an attack of venomous snakes due to the lashon hara they spoke against Hashem, Moshe Rabbeinu, and the mann they ate. When the Yidden sought to do teshuvah, Hashem commanded Moshe to create a copper snake and mount it upon a pole, and those Yidden who had been bitten were instructed to gaze upon the image — and then they would be healed.

Despite the seemingly superstitious nature of this snake image, the Mishnah (Rosh Hashanah 29a) clarifies by asking the obvious question: Did the serpent kill or give life?

Rather, when Yisroel turned their eyes upward and subjugated their hearts to their Father in Heaven, they were healed. But if not — they wasted away.

With all of these quick-fix suggestions that are bandied about, who’s to know which ones “work like a charm” — but are prohibited for that exact reason — and which ones actually have a source in Yiddishkeit? How can we possibly know which segulos are permissible to try? What is it that separates prohibited voodoo-like practices from authentic but not necessarily understood traditions?

I set out to tackle that question.

WHAT IS A SEGULAH? One of the first instances of what might today be considered a segulah took place when the Yid-

The copper snake, in and of itself, was not the source of healing. It was a way to cause Bnei Yisroel to daven, to rouse their hearts in the service of Hashem. Years later, some of the Yidden forgot this and began worshipping this copper snake. Because of their deification of this object, the righteous King Chizkiyahu crushed the copper snake, destroying it in the manner one must dispose of idols.

Modern-day segulos should be viewed similarly; even when halachically acceptable, we must not lose sight of what they are really meant to achieve: to bring us closer to Hashem and cause us to daven. Perhaps, through that, we may merit to see a yeshuah.

In fact, the nature of what a segulah is actually meant to be is hinted to in the word itself.

In the Chumash, the Yidden are referred to as the “am segulah,” or a “treasured nation.” This refers to the unique relationship between Hashem and his beloved — us — Klal Yisroel. If understood in this vein, we can infer that a segulah has to do with this love relationship between ourselves and our Creator. A segulah, therefore, must be an act of investing in this love, an act of going beyond our regular efforts to give something to the Ribono Shel Olam.

Let’s examine some segulos and why they are permissible and potentially effective.

40 DAYS There’s a long list of 40-day segulos, including 40 days of Tehillim Chida, 40 days of Shir Hashirim, 40 days of Nishmas, and so on. What is it about the number 40 that features so prominently in these segulos?

Perhaps storming the heavens for 40 days is reminiscent of the 40 days of teshuvah from Rosh Chodesh Elul until Yom Kippur, a time of introspection and drawing close to Hashem.

Likewise, it rained during the mabul for 40 days in order to cleanse the world from impurity, and similarly, it takes 40 seahs of water to create a kosher mikvah.

This concept of 40 runs throughout the Torah: Moshe Rabbeinu ascended Har Sinai thrice, for 40 days each; the Yidden traversed the midbar for 40 years… The list goes on. The number 40 is representative of transformation.

Whether we choose to channel our prayers through Tehillim or Shir Hashirim or another heilige texts, the question to be asked is: How will these 40 days transform us? Can we cleanse our hearts through 40 days of davening? Can we make this a private time of introspection, teshuvah and growth?

BUYING BEFORE Perhaps you’ve heard of the segulah of buying something related to a simcha before a simcha actually happens. Here’s a great story I was personally zoche to witness: “I’m engaged!” Dina* breathlessly burst through the group home door.

“Mazel tov!” I replied. “And wow! Last time I saw you, you were down in the dumps because you’d ‘passed your prime’ and nothing was doing… So, how’d it happen?!”

My workmate, whom I hadn’t seen in a couple of weeks, settled herself on the couch and launched into her tale.

“Everyone thought I was crazy. My mother seriously began checking into mental health professionals behind my back. I’d gone from despondent to... um, planning for my wedding — without even a shidduch in sight — from one minute to the next.

“I bought myself a wedding gown and brought it home; my family really thought I’d snapped! And then, I circled the date of my chasunah on my wall calendar… And guess what? Two weeks later, here I am, a kallah!”

Dina had heard about the segulah to “buy before a simcha” and decided to give it a try. Well, it worked.

But there’s a backstory.

“I’d gone to a shiur given by a woman who pro-

fesses that positive thoughts have the power to change our destiny. I was really inspired and committed myself to thinking that good things were about to happen. And they did!”

There’s a chassidishe saying attributed to the Tzemach Tzadik of Lubavitch that goes: “Tracht gut, vet zayn gut.” Think good, and it will be good.

But is it really the act of buying before or the potentially delusional positivity we choose to engage in that brings the yeshuah? The answer is unequivocally no!

The point Dini had latched onto was that, as Yidden, we know that the openly good things we desire come straight from Hashem’s hand.

Our choosing to “tracht gut” in the face of a starkly dismal reality is actually an exercise in emunah — not just painting a smile on our faces and pretending the world is what it actually isn’t. When a Yid hands over his burden to his Creator, believing that a favorable outcome is right on the horizon — and believes it with his whole heart while letting go of fear and anxiety — it is an act (and a difficult one!) of rising above the order of nature, of acknowledging that Hashem is in control.

At that moment of pure emunah, yeshuos can happen.

MERITING WEALTH

BY BEING A SANDEK Being a sandek at a bris is considered a segulah for parnassah, because the knees of the sandek are considered to be similar to the mizbe’ach upon which the kohanim brought the ketores. It is said that Hashem rewards these kohanim with great wealth… Therefore, why not a sandek, if he is similarly offering up “ketores”?

One is certainly allowed to try this segulah. After all, helping a Yiddishe kind have a bris is a mitzvah! But it should come as no shock to anyone if the segulah “fails” — at least in a monetary manner. Gedolim have said that the riches of be-

ing a sandek can come in the form of being successful in ways other than financially; it can mean that one’s children will turn out well, that one should have a wealth of health, or of richness in learning. Sometimes segulos are fulfilled — just not in the way we might imagine!

A KOSHER INCANTATION Incantations are often forbidden, due to darchei Amori (ways of the Amorim), but one specific one, mentioned in the Gemara (Shabbos 67a), is permissible to be used. If, chas v’shalom, a person is choking on a bone from meat he is eating, you should take some of the meat and place it on his head and say the incantation of “Chad, chad, nochis, bella, bella, nochis, chad, chad.”

Harav Belsky, zt”l, related that twice he used this segulah on children who were choking, and both times the segulah worked wonders, leaving the crowd of onlookers staring in shock. What makes matters even more interesting is that Rav Belsky was greatly outspoken against matters that were unscientific in nature, such as most forms of alternative medicine, but when it came to this segulah he had no qualms — because if Chazal clearly say that something is kosher, it is kosher!

THERE ARE many segulos out there. If they have a clear mesorah from our Sages, or they rouse our hearts to turn in closeness to Hashem and do not trample on any aspect of Yiddishkeit, it probably can’t hurt to try.

But dear readers, do remember one thing: Your choosing to try out a segulah is fine and dandy — but think twice before mentioning it to an acquaintance who just might not want to hear about it… If you really care, pick up your Tehillim and draw your own heart close to Hashem and daven for a friend — there just might be no better remedy than that!

I glanced around my bedroom in wonder, nearly pinching myself to make sure it was true. The room that had been so spacious for the last five and a half years was a bit crowded, with two new cribs filling the space. Looking at my adorable little son and daughter, lying peacefully inside them, I could hardly contain my emotion. We had waited so long for this moment!

It was three weeks after their birth, and the babies had finally been released from the NICU. Now they were home, and my husband and I were elated. They were really ours! Our own precious little bundles!

We cradled them with an appreciation that probably only one who has waited for this bracha could fully understand.

Nine days later, I was home alone with my twins when Chaim began to cry. I tried to rock him, to feed him, to cuddle him, but nothing helped.

His cries only got louder. I felt so helpless, doubting my ma-

ternal capabilities. How am I supposed to relieve my baby? I thought in desperation. What more can I do?

Chaim’s wails intensified and he was throwing himself back in sharp movements, clearly in pain! I could not figure out how to calm him down.

Something must be wrong, I decided. While hospitalized in the NICU just after birth, the doctors had mentioned an issue with Chaim’s intestines that might eventually need to be corrected. They had assured me that he was all right and advised that we take him for a follow-up examination at three months of age. Maybe Chaim’s pain was related to that!

As soon as the thought crossed my mind, I felt an urge to act upon it. I called a taxi and then dialed my husband’s number, asking him to meet me at the emergency room. I don’t know how I managed to get out with my two little babies and no help. I vaguely recall grabbing the diaper bag and stuffing some diapers and bottles inside with one hand while rocking Chaim with the other.

At the hospital, Chaim was rushed in for emergency surgery. Yes, it was a flare-up in his tiny intestines.

My husband and I said Tehillim in the waiting room.

I remember rocking Suri and just davening that everything should work out well for her twin brother.

The look on the doctor’s face as he exited the operating room was not very encouraging, to say the least.

Apparently, there had been some complications during surgery. Chaim’s hemoglobin level had fallen dangerously low and he needed a transfusion.

Even after the procedure was over, things continued to go downhill. Chaim was retaining water. His stomach was bloated. The doctors could not pinpoint the source of the complications and let us know that they were unsure of how to proceed.

I was hysterical. Chaim had to recover!

My davening took on new meaning. I felt so close to Hashem; only He knew how to get us out of this situation. There is only One to turn to when the doctors lift their hands in despair.

A few days passed, and I sat by Chaim’s side in the hospital room. The recovery process wasn’t progressing; it was one step forward, two steps back. Chaim’s condition wavered between critical and stable.

Looking at little Chaim, I remembered a speech I had heard a short while before on the power of saying amen. I got the number of the speaker and called her, hoping for some chizuk.

“You called at just the right moment!” she assured me. “I am just about to leave to my son’s bar mitzvah!”

I felt a trifle uncomfortable for having called at such an inappropriate moment, but the woman put me at ease. She promised to ask the friends of the bar mitzvah boy to make a bracha shehakol on the ice cream dessert and answer amen as a zechus for my son. Before hanging up, she also suggested that we organize a family project of answering amen with kavanah.

One of my sisters designed a chart with Chaim’s full name on it and distributed copies to all of my nieces and nephews, along with stickers to stick on each time they said amen out loud.

That same week, on Friday Erev Shabbos Chazon, my husband got a call from a friend who had heard of our plight. “I run a chevras Tehillim every Shabbos afternoon in our shul,” he said. “This week, I plan to make a brachos party at the end. The zechus of all the amens will be dedicated to your son. What is his name?”

My husband and I felt so surrounded by kindness.

It was reassuring to know that others were turning to such special segulos in our zechus.

Shortly after Shabbos, Chaim opened his eyes and flashed the sweetest smile that did not leave a dry eye in the room. At that moment, I just knew everything would be okay. On Sunday, the doctors noticed that the water had begun draining, and with each passing day, Chaim’s situation improved drastically. And I just knew that we had witnessed a miracle above and beyond simple “nature.”

On Erev Shabbos Nachamu, I was sitting on my couch at home, holding little Chaim. It was unreal!

My wish is that every choleh and every person in Klal Yisroel in need of a yeshuah should merit seeing the Yad Hashem as openly as we did. Amen.

that there was a way to receive kaparah, yeshuos and bracha without giving up on anything at all. Imagine that you could live your life as you already do, without changing the way you eat, sleep or dress, and still be showered with a bounty of goodness.

The Tomer Devorah says that the best yissurim are those that don’t distract a person from avodas Hashem. Whereas most forms of kaparah involve some form of detriment or withdrawal from one’s daily living, embarrassment is unique in that it doesn’t affect one’s eating, clothing, health or way of life. Therefore, the author of the sefer writes, a person should seek to be embarrassed, and rejoice when it happens, knowing that he has received the greatest form of kaparah possible.

Rav Shteinman further explains that the potency of this segulah is compounded by the fact that it hits us where it hurts most. While other forms of kaparah target the guf, embarrassment affects our nefesh, the closest thing we have to Hashem, thereby multiplying its effect manifold. In fact, Rav Chaim Vital writes that one with wise eyes seeks to be embarrassed, knowing that along with embarrassment comes life itself.

And while I knew that embarrassment was a powerful force, that shaming another was not something to be taken lightly, I never fully understood the potency of this great segulah until the day I met Neri, who was stumbling down the sidewalks of Netivot. Allow me to share his tale.

My name is Neri Abecassis. I was born in Morocco in 1951, in a small town in the area of Tafilalt. Shortly before my eleventh birthday, my family left Tafilalt for the city of Haifa.

Unlike my brothers, the move didn’t come easily for me, and I struggled to acclimate to a culture that seemed so foregin from the one we’d left behind. Time passed, and although we’d been in Haifa for years, at the age of 24 I still hadn’t settled down. My parents were worried. Being a good son, I wanted to see them happy, and so after some deliberation, I decided to take a trip down south to Netivot. There lived the Baba Sali, a great chacham and scion of the famed Abuchatzeira family, whom we knew from our days in Tafilalt. If a blessing from the Baba Sali wouldn’t help me, I didn’t think anything else could.

The trip was long, but I didn’t mind. I knew I was going to see an incredible tzaddik, and that was worth any price. After over two hours of driving, I finally arrived. I entered the home of the Baba Sali with awe. Even a simple man like me could sense the kedusha emanating from the dilapidated structure the holy Baba Sali called home. A gabbai greeted me at the door and pointed me to the one free seat in the small and crowded room. I settled myself on the rickety chair and prepared for a long wait. The room was full of people as different and varied as the stripes of the rainbow, all of us waiting for a chance to speak with the great chacham.

there for close to an hour when a sudden hush fell over the crowd. Startled by the electric quiet, I looked up, and there he was. The Baba Sali had left his room and was circling the antechamber. He paced up and down the rows of petitioners, his shining face partially cloaked by the robes he was wearing.

The tzaddik circled the room once, twice, and then slowed as he neared my seat. Just when I thought he was going to pass, the Baba Sali stopped completely, so that my entire being was nearly covered by his hovering presence. And then it started.

Even now I lack the words to describe the horror of what transpired. The Baba Sali began to berate me, loudly and harshly, in front of all the people gathered there. Again and again, the Baba Sali heaped sharp words of rebuke upon me until I felt myself withering up so completely, I was sure I was going to pass out. But he wouldn’t stop. The crowd was shocked, but I was too mortified to notice. Then, just as suddenly as it had begun, the tzaddik’s harangue drew to a close, and he returned to the room from where he’d come.

As soon as he was gone, the room erupted. I didn’t waste any time. I pushed my way out of there and fled to the refuge of my car, trembling and sweaty. I silently promised myself that come what may, I would never return there again. I traveled the long way home, angry and confused, and when I arrived, I didn’t dare tell anyone what had transpired.

Two weeks passed, and nothing changed — until this morn-

ing, when a messenger appeared at my parents’ door. He said he was sent by the Baba Sali himself, with strict instructions to have me return to Netivot. It took every ounce of my self-control to resist kicking him out of our home, and although he wheedled and pleaded, I refused to negotiate at first. How dare he even show his face? Still, he continued to beg, loudly and with tears. So afraid was I of my parents catching wind of the commotion that I complied, and before I knew it, we were on our way.

All too soon, I was there once again. Images of my previous visit flashed before my eyes, and I fought the urge to flee. This time, the gabbai beckoned me in immediately — directly to the small room where the Baba Sali was sitting.

“Neri,” the Baba Sali said, and I felt a tingle run up my spine.

“Neri,” he repeated, “what happened last time after you left?”

I looked down, afraid to meet the tzaddik’s sharp gaze.

“I was upset,” I stammered.

“And then?” he pried. “What happened on your way back?”

I was silent. What had happened on my way back? And then I remembered.

“Kavod haRav,” I replied, “there was an accident, right in front of my car. Three cars collided, barely missing mine. I remained unhurt, but the drive home was delayed by hours.”

The Baba Sali nodded, clearly hanging on to my every word. The room fell silent once again.

And then the Baba Sali told me something I will never forget as long as I live.

“Neri,” the tzaddik said, his dark eyes piercing mine, “that day when you first came to see me, I smelled the malach hamaves enter my home. I knew not for whom he had come, but I sensed that he was here. I walked and walked, and smelled, until I realized that he was hovering directly above you. My only chance at saving you was to embarrass you until you felt like dying. Hamalbin pnei chaveiro b’rabim k’ilu hargo.

Neri, my son, you cannot die twice. I killed you on that day so that you would be saved from the crash that was meant to take your life. And, Neri, if you would like to know just why you deserved to die, I can tell you that as well.”

AT THAT POINT, the Baba Sali’s words were too much to bear.

Neri left the Baba Sali’s home, running blindly, unable to process the enormity of what had just occurred. It was then that I met Neri, and he shared with me his story. Rest assured that every word is true.

The first person to daven at Rochel Imeinu’s kever was her oldest son, Yosef. He’d been sold as a slave at the age of 17, and on the way to slavery in Mitzrayim, passed and davened at his mother’s kever.

Until the mid-1800s, Rochel’s kever was marked by a tiny dome upheld by four beams.

After Yaakov buried Rochel, each of his sons (besides Binyamin, of course) placed a stone on her grave. Yaakov put a large one on top, forming the first monument on the kever. (This is one of the reasons for the minhag to put stones on a kever.)

In 1841, Sir Moses Montefiore and his wife, who were childless and thus felt a special connection to Rochel Imeinu, added walls to the dome, as well as a long room where visitors could rest or take shelter from the weather.

When Sir Moses Montefiore remodeled the kever, the iron lock on the door was made with unique keys. These keys were said to help people in situations of medical distress, and the keeper of the keys would lend them out — to both Jews and Arabs — as necessary.

In 1865, the Jewish community of Bombay, India, sponsored the drilling of a well in the courtyard.

Around that time, the kever was in an open area on the side of the road. Soon Arabs began building their own cemetery around the kever. The city of Bethlehem expanded around the site, and the grave became the center of town.

In 1996, after many terrorist attacks, a fortress was constructed. Three-foot concrete walls, barbed wire and two guard towers were built to surround the site.

In 1948, the Jordanians took control of the area. Yidden could no longer go daven there until it was reopened.

Between 1998 and 2000, a new bullet-proof building was constructed, adding more space to the main room and a hallway. This changed the iconic dome-building appearance.

During the remodeling, the historical “Kever Rochel” sign that had been plastered there since 1945 disappeared. It was found in a nearby dumpster in 2005, and the sign was immediately repaired and hung back in its place.

When a terror attack took the life of Nava Appelbaum, a kallah, one night before her chasunah, the silk fabric of the gown she never got to wear was used to create a curtain for Rochel Imeinu’s kever.

Over the years, there were times when only bulletproof, armed buses were allowed to drive through, but today, private cars can easily drive straight up to the compound.

Under the auspices of Mosdos Kever Rochel, the organization that cares for the site, a number of kollelim, including a chatzos kollel and Tehillim kollel, were established. Today, there are talmidei chachamim learning at the kever round the clock.

At Kever Rochel, Yidden of all types feel a deep connection to “Mamme Rochel,” and unburden their hearts in tefillah. Many have seen yeshuos and refuos in all areas, in the zechus of Rochel Imeinu.

Rabbi Yehuda Gasner, zt”l The tragic passing of Rabbi Yehuda Gasner, an unusually special yungerman, has left his friends and family and the thousands of people who were impacted by his truly unique combination of Torah, middos tovos, simchas hachaim, hashkafah tehorah, all encased in a beautiful wrapping of unassuming humility, are in deep mourning and pain. His passing at the young age of 25, leaving behind his special parents, his distinguished wife and two very young children, is a colossal loss.

“He was a unique and rare ben aliyah,” said Rav Elya Ber Wachtfogel, rosh yeshivah of the Yeshiva of South Fallsburg, at the levayah.

“He underwent nearly two years of unspeakable suffering, yesurim of the guf and the nefesh and he accepted that suffering with a ruach tov. This is something that is not at all common.”

A Sensitive Soul Yehuda Gasner was born in Monsey to his devoted parents, Rabbi Dovid and Mrs. Aidel Gasner. His father recalls how even from a young age, Yehuda possessed remarkable sensitivity to feelings of others that was well beyond his years. “I remember, when he was a young boy in grade school. He would attend a mishmar program where, after learning, they would give the boys hot potato kugel — something which they looked forward to with great anticipation. Once, Yehuda called his mother right after the learning part of the program and asked her to pick him up early. He didn’t want to eat the kugel even though he usually did. When his mother pressed him for the real reason for his uncharacteristic abstinence, he replied that he had heard about the bombing in Eretz Yisroel where people were nebach injured and killed. How could he enjoy his kugel when Yidden were

suffering so much?

As Yehuda grew older, progressed from middle school to mesivta in the Yeshiva of South Monsey, he developed into a budding ben aliyah who was deeply devoted to learning Torah and possessed a tremendous feeling for Yiddishkeit, middos and constantly grew in his avodas Hashem and hashkafas hachaim. This continued when he went to beis medrash in the Yeshiva of South Fallsburg and later Yeshiva Yagdil Torah of Yerushalayim. Soon after he returned to America and went to learn in Beth Medrash Govoah of Lakewood, he became engaged to Chanah Rosah Jundef, daughter of Rabbi and Mrs. Eliyahu Meir Jundef of Detroit. Perhaps there is no other way to describe the beauty of their marriage other than to say that the way they interacted with each other was a paradigm for that which Chazal tell us, when a husband and wife live in harmony, the Shechina resides among them. Their marriage was a partnership that brought the Shechina into their home. Their devotion, deep loyalty to one another, good cheer and good humor and constant efforts to protect and shield the other from pain and suffering, were very rare and deeply inspiring.

Sterling Middos and Humility of Spirit His father-in-law recalled, “If every choson conducted himself like Yehuda did, there would be no need for marriage counselors. His middos, his caring and his tremendous sensitivity to the feelings of his wife and all people, were remarkable.”Rav Lieff recalled, “Even toward the very end of his life, when the question came up as to whether he would like to be buried in Eretz Yisroel, his reaction was, “It is so expensive.” He thought of how

it would affect others, not about himself. His close friend and roommate, Rabbi Yechezkel Litke, related, “Yehuda was a unique combination. On the one hand, he was an unbelievable medakdek in everything that he did, every halacha was observed meticulously. If anyone in the dorm had a shailah in halacha, they could be fairly certain that Yehuda had already thought of that question and worked it through. He was a great masmid — every seder was a seder. At the same time, he didn’t do anything with a ‘heaviness.’

He performed everything with such a light touch. Everything he did, even his frumkeit and ehrlichkeit was encased in such a beautiful wrapping of chein, in such an easy, sweet way. He was intense, but those around him didn’t feel the intensity. Everyone loved to be around him. He was geshmak, with an uplifting sense of humor and he had the uncanny ability to make everyone in his orbit feel comfortable.”

Adom Ki Yamus B’Ohel A friend who visited him in Houston, said, “When we would come into his room, he invested such effort into just being ‘normal’, just acting like he used to — playing with his baby. You saw that even though we came to visit

and be mechazek him, his goal was to make us feel comfortable.

His rosh yeshivah in Eretz Yisroel, Rav Aryeh Berenstein, encapsulated his greatness while sobbing at the levayah. He cried, “Yehuda was such a noble naki v’tzaddik. He underwent such yesurim and simultaneously had

such simchas hachaim.”

Indeed, his childhood friend, Rav Yehoshua Yankelowitz, related that even though Yehuda knew what his matzav was, as long as he was alive, he lived with thanks to Hashem for the present.

He didn’t live thinking about the future or the past, rather he was supremely thankful for every minute of his life. Every time he was able to hold his baby… another day, another davening, was a source of simcha for him.

At the levayah in Eretz Yisroel, Rav Don Segal told over how his passing was such a tremendous blow that we have to realize that

the blow was given by the Kel Malei Rachamim. Indeed, perhaps that is what Rav Simcha Scheinberg, rosh yeshivah of Torah Ohr, meant when he said, “The niftar was a gavra rabbah but certainly, his passing was a zechus for him because without a doubt, he was a korban for Klal Yisroel.”

Rabbi Yehuda Gasner leaves behind his deeply devoted wife, Mrs. Chanah Rosah Gasner, his parents, Rabbi and Mrs. Dovid Gasner, his children Zevi and Brocha Baila, his siblings and hundreds of beloved friends. Yehi zichro baruch.
