I would suggest that you speak with your accountant about your situation to get advice that specifically pertains to you. For people selling investment properties, there is a “1031 Exchange,” which can be tax advantageous; in addition, if you did repairs or had other losses, you may, in some situations, be able to save on your tax liability. When I saw they realtor entering the next door condo with the same individuals that had come to look at it a few days earlier, I knew it was time to call Kollel Chatzos.

YOURVOICE A LIFE AND DEATH MATTER Dear Monsey, I just took a big swig of liquid-lifesaver. It’s dark pink, sickeningly sweet, and has kept me living more than once. To be truthful, my current presence on planet Earth probably has more to do with Hatzalah than with that bottle of Benadryl, but since we’re anyways speaking the truth here- I’ll say it like is: I appreciate that medication. You see, it’s more than just an itchy life when you have allergies- it's downright scary,
and that bottle of Benadryl is always there- sitting on my kitchen counter with his group of close friends, waiting for me just in case. There you’ll find the whole gang: our beloved Benadryl to soothe the Beast of Itch, his buddy Epi-Pen for when things get out of hand, and Prednisone for when inflammation spreads like a brush-fire gone mad. Yes, I know that I’m about to bring up a potentially stale topic. I truly do understand that all of the major publications have already done articles on

this subject, and that perhaps it’s a bit overkill to ask you to focus on it once again. But you have to realize that allergies aren’t just an article to me - it’s the ever-present nemesis that stalks my family. You see, it’s not only I that has allergies. My husband has allergies. And my kids have allergies. And we all have allergies to different things. That makes life pretty hard, with preparing different meals for each family member, and all. But it’s not the things that I can control (with Hashem’s help, of course) that bother me. I can work a little harder to feed the family, and I can even eat the same boring old dishes again and again, if that what it takes to keep us healthy. It’s outside the house that I’m concerned about; it’s the people and places that are not structured around my family’s specific needs that worry me tremendously. And for that reason, I’d like to ask the community to help me conquer this dragon, by allowing me to raise awareness on how to make the world a safer place for those of us with allergies. When one has a child with allergies, or suffers herself, there is danger everywhere. It’s in the Bamba bag you open for your child while shopping for clothing in a crowded store. It’s the leben your toddler slurps in the grocery cart as you complete your weekly order. It’s the coffee that you cradle as you
travel on the Monsey Trails Bus into the city. It's little things like cream cheese sandwiches, peanut-chew platters at simchos, and fish-gelatin candies that you send with your child for Shabbos party. It’s milkshakes, and pizza, and peanut butter sandwiches that make the difference. Don’t worry- I’m not asking you to give up your favorite foods. I’m only begging you to refrain from bringing them into public places. Because what you don’t know - can kill someone like me. It’s but miniscule traces, invisible to the naked-eye, that marks the difference between life and death. Most people don’t know it, but a highly sensitive individual can have an extreme allergic reaction if she as much as touches an object that your milky, fishy, or nutty hands may have touched previously. You may have thought that your hands were clean, but unless they were washed with an allergen-free soap, they still pose a danger. If you don’t have allergies you don’t know what to be scared of, so perhaps you’ll brush away these concerns. Let me give you an idea what allergies mean. Take a deep breath. Now hold it for two minutes. Now hold it longer. Can’t? Neither can I. My allergenic body needs oxygen just the same as your non-allergenic one. The only difference is that you can now take a fresh lungful of air. When someone is having an allergic reaction- there’s no way to do that. When I touch milk, for instance, my skin absorbs it and sends the allergen throughout my body. Slowly, without me

1. Be aware that Soy, Milk, Wheat, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Fish, and Eggs are the most common kosher foods to cause a severe allergic reaction. 2. Refrain from bringing these common foods into public places. 3. Find safe alternatives to give your children when out and about in public places. Some ideas include: rice cakes, fruit, corn chips, popcorn etc. 4. If you must bring any of these allergens into the public domain please be aware that heating these foods will cause
the allergens to become heavily airborne and may result in a call to Hatzalah…
6. Just say “NO!” When making a simcha or during Simchos Torah, for instance, refuse to have nuts and peanuts a part of the menu. It’s just not worth the risk.
As a side note I would just like to say “Thank you!” to all the people who are already making changes in life to accommodate allergenic children and adultsfrom schools to doctor offices. It may be slightly difficult, but we truly appreciate the efforts that you are making! Allergies are scary, but the good news is that they also give us a tremendous chance to work on our achdus! Dear Monsey Residents: the number of children and adults with allergies in our community is overwhelming! The numbers just keep going higher and higher! We may not be able to stop it, but we can have a role in helping to keep these members of Klal Yisroel safe. Awareness is the first step; putting these practical steps into action is the next.

The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a public program for children under the age of three who are either suspected of having or at risk for developmental delays or disabilities. Potentially eligible children must be referred to the county program (Rockland County, 845-364-2032) to receive EIP services. EIP is funded by New York State and county governments. All EIP services are provided at no cost to parents. Health insurance may be used for approved services. A child's eligibility for the program can be determined only by state-approved evaluators under contract, and all services must be authorized by the county.

RISING TO NEW HEIGHTS Chinese Auction to Benefit Children of Ohr V’Daas
It was approximately the 25 years ago that Dr. Tzvia Feldman found herself living in Monsey, having recently moved with her family from Eretz Yisroel in order to find better educational opportunities for her young son who was multiply handicapped. Her quest to find a special needs program geared to frum children turned up fruitless.
was viable, she sought out the advice of Rabbi Martin Schloss of the Board of Jewish Education, who she knew was well connected in Albany. “I told him about my son and that I wanted a frum class for him,” recalled Dr. Feldman. “He told me that at that time he had a list in his archives of 30,000 Jewish children with special needs who had no connection whatsoever to Judaism because the only programs available to them were either in the Catholic schools or public schools.” Ohr V’daas opened in 1991 with six children, including Dr. Feldman’s son. As word got out, demand for spots in the innovative program skyrocketed.
“All I wanted was a cute little frum program, but there was nothing here,” Dr. Feldman told The Monsey View. “There was no Gan Ezra, nothing.” Faced with having to send her child to public school in order to accommodate his needs, Dr. Feldman contemplated taking matters into her own hands and creating the kind of school that she envisioned. Unsure whether or not her plan

“People were coming out of the woodwork when they heard what we were doing,” said Dr. Feldman. “In the first year or two we went from six kids to 36, and we moved four or five times because we kept outgrowing our space.” Today Ohr V’daas, which employs an innovative approach to Applied Behavioral Analysis, has two classes and approximately 60 students who are representative of Monsey’s diverse community. The school’s student body echoes words spoken to Dr. Feldman

“He told me that children with special needs have the koach to bring achdus,” observed Dr. Feldman. “One of the most beautiful things here is that we have children from every corner of the kehilla, and Ohr V’daas is one of the few places where Yidden of all kinds have relationships, because we are all in this together.” The financial realities of a special needs institution are daunting, and Dr. Feldman estimates the actual cost of educating each child at $45 to $50 thousand per year. Approximately half of the students receive some assistance from the state and all students receive scholarships. Despite the tremendous costs involved, Ohr V’daas remains open to all.

But then I peered into the small window, and I saw the faces, the indifference, the judgment, the cruelty, and my anger fizzled out. How could I demand mothering rights, when I hadn’t even protected him? I sat back down. The quicksand of self-hatred
the glances they sent me, I could sense it was about me. “Go outside and tell them we will allow you to see your son,” the head nurse told me. “Not before you do,” I said, not clear why she was sending me outside. “Then don’t,” she said. Now that I was listening to the sounds beyond my own inner suffering and hope, I began to hear the sounds immediately beyond the hospital walls. There seemed to be a tempestuous sea of people. They were screaming, but I couldn’t make out the words. What sounded like metal, perhaps thrown glass, shattered the rainfall of human voices. My heart stilled and awoke. Curiosity refreshed me.

I pushed open the door. A young man, his movements determined and abrupt, approached me. “Did something change? Did you see the child?”

And then, two young bochurim, coming from behind the crowd, pushed a metal garbage vessel to the center of the road. They poured liquid on its contents and lit a match. A hafganah. A real protest. I clenched my teeth and watched morbidly. The street lit up. I could now see the faces in the back row. Duvid was fast approaching. My Avrumy was there. I felt anger. My children shouldn’t be a part of this. I had never allowed my children to be part of the protests. Growing up, I learned that everything can be spoken, except what couldn’t. And those things, the things that couldn’t be discussed, needed to be brought out in the open even more effectively than the words that came naturally. It didn’t always work outside of families where love existed. The Arabs and the Jews could talk until they chewed their own mouths off, and still nothing would be understood. Violence showed what words could just try to convey. Jews and Jews, sadly, needed the same method of understanding, because if there was intolerance, no words could ever bridge meaning. And I always told my children, “We don’t go.” There was a better way.

But there wasn’t always a better way. I, alone, had stood outside the doors of locked rooms, concrete faces, and iron will.

The fire crackled, sparked upward into the blackening skies. It warmed the night air and permeated the world with the stench of roasting garbage and plumes of smoke. I noticed that my jaws, now clenched, were shivering. I felt cold despite the fire which skipped and ran within the parameters of its walls. My eyes, staring straight into the depths of the fire, blurred and ran. I went back inside the building. I stumbled backward, and landed on a stair. I sat there, chin in my chest. I was still

Of whatever I would find. I couldn’t do it. Outside, everyone that I knew cared for me was doing his best to grant me this. The head nurse inserted the key and turned. “Bashefer!” I cried. “I can’t do this. But you can. We’ll go together. It’s the only way I can.”

What would I see? Did I want to see? I followed bravely, the fear growing in my bowels with every step.

The bed was big. I had time to search him out, my child. His face was small, but his eyes were large. They were open. “Chuna?” He didn’t answer. Didn’t turn. Ayelet pulled me by the arm. She smoothed the blankets around Chuna’s feet. “Here,” she said, pushing me to come toward his face. I inched forward, until I was standing nose to nose with my precious child, his face looking carved and molded by adoring, delicate fingers. “Can I kiss him?” I asked Ayelet.
Now, we were at the door. She removed a key from a yarn around her neck.
She nodded, an eyebrow raised. A tide of anger lapped at the parched beaches of my heart. You didn’t tell me what to expect. I still don’t know. He went under the knife several times in one day. And I don’t know if I can kiss my own child.

Was it anger at myself I was redirecting at Ayelet and the entire bold-faced staff? “Tell me if I can hold my child! Tell me if I can embrace him without adding to his pain. How is he? What’s wrong with him?” “It’ll take time and he’ll be out of here,” Ayelet said, getting busy with metal cabinets. It occurred to me that the body heals itself. Everything in nature repairs itself. It’s only us, people with judging hearts, who don’t. As soon as our feelings mend and we feel the joy inherent in life, we pull at the scab, expose the wound to callous hands, inflict indictment. If we would just rest, and allow intricate, beautiful nature to weave its miraculous medicine for us. But how could I? WHAT MADE YOU MOVE? My husband’s new job in the Bronx made traveling from Lakewood a three-hour nightmare. We needed to move closer right away, and Monsey was the best place to come. Having grown up in the out-of-town community of Baltimore, I appreciated the feel of Monsey. Especially my neighborhood of Wesley Hills; it’s the closest you can get to an out-of-town feel in the Tristate area. It’s also very centrally located for me; 40 minutes from Manhattan, and close enough to Flatbush and Lakewood.
ARE YOU RENTING OR DID YOU PURCHASE? When I bought my house here, it was a big commitment to settle in one place, and I was nervous. I asked Hashem to send me a sign and to help me find the right place. I’d researched at least 100 houses online and 11 in person. The

choices were daunting. And then I came to look at the house I live in now, a lovely colonial. We knocked in, and a Norwegian woman opened the door. She wasn’t expecting us this early. “I’m sorry,” I said, “but can I just have a quick look around? I’ve looked at so many houses already that if I don’t, I’m probably not going to come back.” As soon as she reluctantly opened the door wider for me, I saw the floor tiles. The foyer had the exact same tiles my parents had in the house I grew up in. They sold the house when they made aliyah, and I once returned to my childhood home, asking the owner for a quick peek inside. The new owner refused. It was a very nostalgic feeling to see that these were the same tiles that had greeted me every day of my childhood when I had come through the door. That was the first of many

things I liked in the house. The next day, I was scheduled to come back with my husband. The agent told us to come at nine in the morning. If eleven had been too early yesterday, nine would be even harder. It’s hard to show strangers through your house, I thought. So I brought along an apple pie - my grandmother’s recipe - as a gift to the owner of the house. “You’re clearly not from New York,” my agent told me. When I presented it to the Norwegian owner, she was so moved. She told me no one had ever been so nice to her before. She walked with us from room to room, profusely thanking us. She really wanted us to have her
house, and she even lowered the price significantly for us. That’s how that humble apple pie grew in worth to several thousand dollars.
HOW DO YOU LIKE THE NEIGHBORHOOD? I love it. I like that my neighborhood has families older than mine, that the tone is already set and it’s not just a bunch of young couples starting out. I love the out-oftown friendliness. The first Shabbos, we were greeted from across the street. I hadn’t experienced that since moving out of Baltimore. We got cake and kugel and a booklet introducing us to the shuls in the neighborhood, which included resources such as babysitting. I like our shul and community, and the shiurim for women. I like the grassy lawns, space and privacy. We just found out that the property we own has its own name, much like an old English manor. It’s called Arbor Edge. I like that a lot. Our house faces the woods, and we have a long walk to shul on Shabbos, but the privacy is nice. Our relationship with the non-Jewish neighbors is cordial. One snowy Shabbos, my husband came home to find our neighbor had plowed our driveway.
WHAT’S THE MOST DIFFICULT ASPECT OF LIVING HERE? People walking around at night without reflectors. It’s the part about living in Monsey that most concerns me. These people have
families, or parents, waiting for them at home. As they walk, they’re not dreaming that they have just avoided a fatal accident. The roads here are winding and poorly lit. There are deer and other animals on the road. And then there are people. It scares and frustrates me.
HOW DO YOU FIND THE SCHOOL SYSTEM? My children are both in YSV and we love it. It’s a large school, so the children have to learn to get along with all personality types. They are an established school and we feel secure there; like they know what they stand for, and yet are very open to parents’ input. They told us at the beginning of the year: “We make mistakes. It’s your job to tell us about them, so that we can fix them.” My son has chassidishe rebbeim, and I like that.
WHAT DID YOU HAVE TO GET USED TO? People speaking Yiddish. I actually like it a lot that going into Evergreen, you get a huge mix of people- all getting along, all a part of the greater Monsey community. We have all types. The other thing I had to get used to is phenomenon of stores that open at eleven. (Or later if the owner decided to dally!) I’m up at eight, but the stores will be closed for at least three more hours.
IF YOU HAD PREVIOUSLY KNOWN EVERYTHING ABOUT MONSEY BEFORE
YOU MOVED, WOULD YOU STILL HAVE MADE THE CHANGE? I knew when I moved that I had to put myself out there to meet people. It used to be that I would feel sorry for myself and wait to be noticed. But I learned, and I would recommend this to anyone — invite yourself over and integrate yourself into the community; don’t expect anyone else to notice and include you. In our shul, we had a welcome party to greet my family and four other couples who had just moved in. They were discussing the upcoming Chanukah party, scheduled for two weeks later. I decided to volunteer, despite being unsure what the standards in this community were. The winter made it harder to meet new people, but volunteering together with other women would allow me to get to know them. They told me later that it exceeded their expectations. I joined the gym and joined the school committee for the same reason: to meet people and get to know them. Now that the Friday night seudah is getting earlier and earlier, I love having a little “extra something” to serve next to the meat. The following three salads are fantastic! They are all extra-easy to
prepare, and each is a great, light side dish served next to the kugel and farfel. I like to prepare them on Thursday and serve them for supper along with whatever else I’m preparing.

5 cucumbers, peeled and thinly sliced 1 large onion, cut into half circles 2 teaspoons salt ¼ cup vinegar ½ cup sugar ¾ cup boiling water
1. Combine cucumbers, onion and salt in a large bowl. Let sit for a half hour. The salt will cause the cucumbers and the onion to wilt. 2. Add the vinegar and sugar to the cucumbers and mix. Pour the boiling water over the cucumbers and refrigerate.

CUCUMBER SALAD This is a staple in my house. It takes but minutes to prepare and is perfect with any type of chicken or meat. Be aware that it doesn’t last as long as the storebought varieties, due to the lack of preservatives. I usually prepare it Thursday morning, and it lasts until after Shabbos.

1 bag coleslaw mix 2 teaspoons salt ¼ cup water ¼ cup vinegar ½ cup sugar 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
1. Place the coleslaw mix and the salt into a large bowl. Let sit for a half hour. 2. Pour the water, vinegar and sugar over the coleslaw. Let sit an additional half hour. 3. Add the mayonnaise. You might want to add a little more or less, according to personal taste.
COLESLAW There’s nothing quite like homemade coleslaw. It doesn’t take long to make and you cannot compare it to the store-bought taste. It’s simply much better!

BROCCOLI SALAD If the broccoli florets are a little too large, cut them before combining with the rest of the ingredients.
2-lb. bag frozen broccoli florets, completely defrosted 1 red onion, chopped 1 cup slivered almonds, toasted 1 cup craisins ½ cup mayonnaise 3 tablespoons sugar 3 tablespoons lemon juice
1. Combine broccoli, red onion, almonds and craisins in a large mixing bowl. 2. In a separate small bowl combine mayonnaise, sugar and lemon juice. Pour over the broccoli mixture. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

FACTS 40% of socks manufactured worldwide have their origins in China, specifically the city of Zhuji found in the Province of Zhejiang. Back in the tenth century, you would have owned socks only if you were part of the wealthy upper class. Difficult to produce, socks were considered luxury items and were considered a beautiful gifting choice. Ever wondered which part of the sock wears out the fastest? The toe! According to research (yes, someone actually spent time and money researching socks!) individuals sleeping with roommates are more likely to wear mismatched socks than people who have their own rooms. Why? In the attempt to not wake a sleeping roommate, they’ll often grab two socks with the light off- and find out later that the socks aren’t quite the perfect match they thought them to be…

CLEVER SOLUTIONS • If being mismatched isn’t your idea of high-style,
try these innovative tips to help keep track of your socks:
• Wash socks in a mesh bag to prevent socks from scampering away
• Stock up on socks of one brand/color, that way,
even if you lose one- you can match it up with a different one that looks just the same.
• Buy specially made sock-clips, available at your
local hosiery store, and clip socks together before tossing into the laundry hamper.
CREATIVE USES • When all else fails and despite your best efforts you still have a few lone socks floating arounduse these creative ideas to put the Single-Sock Crisis in its place!
SOCKS IN HALACHA One is not required to wash his hands after touching clean socks; touching sweaty socks however does require one to wash. Although Kohanim are not permitted to wear shoes when they bless the congregation, it is permissible and fitting for them to wear socks. One is not required to make the bracha of Shecheyanu when purchasing a new pair of socks.
• Thought socks were only foot-friends? They can be hand-friends, too! Slip an old cotton sock over your hand, and use it to clean up dusty blinds in a quick and easy manner! Works great for fans as well!
• Let loose the creativity by decorating odd socks
into friendly faces! Young children can then enjoy putting on a puppet show for the family.
• Crawling baby? Pad her knees by cutting off the
feet of two old socks and slide them on top of her clothing. (The same method can be used to create a mock shell; pull over elbows when in need of a sleeve extension!)
• Soothe those aching muscles with this homemade
heating pad: fill up a sock with uncooked rice and tie a knot at the end. Nuke it for 60 seconds in the microwave (in 20-second increments) and apply to aching muscles. Works wonders!

It can be frustrating to observe a child fritter away her potential, especially after repeated efforts to motivate fall flat. We call it ‘not interested,’ ‘not motivated,’ ‘not trying,’ or ‘not putting in effort,’ which really all connote the same thing: This child can, but for some reason simply doesn’t want to. Children are naturally created with certain gifts implanted within them. They possess an organic desire to learn, incredible resilience, and a powerful drive to succeed. Just watch a child during her first three years of life. (Ever heard someone call a two-yearold ‘lazy?’) They are objects in motion. So what is it that makes children lose their drive, their momentum? Having just established the premise that children are naturally driven leads us subsequently to realize that only external factors can be accountable for this lack of drive. It is tempting to lay blame on the child, claiming, ““She’s failing because she’s lazy,” or “He’s misbehaving because he’s not motivated.” The true cause of the problem, however, rests outside the child, not inside of her. What are these external forces? The possibilities are vast. They can run the gamut from peer pressure, to teacher effectiveness or outside stressors. Let’s examine three common forces that hinder children’s school performance - and what we, as parents, can do about them.
Possible External Force #1: Being Expected to Perform Above Their Skill Level One of the most common factors that cause children to lose their enthusiasm and drive for school-related tasks is the expectation that they are able to perform above their skill level. This can present itself in the form of bright child like Rechy, who has just entered sixth grade. Her teacher expects her to take notes during a lowstimulation, lecture-style lesson and subsequently be tested on the material. The teacher has not provided any in-class review or ageappropriate activities to help her retain the knowledge that she has supposedly just gained. Rechy doesn’t want to study. Is it any wonder? We most often see this scenario played out with a child who is lacking a core skill that other children her own age may already have, and yet she is expected to perform “like everyone else,” regardless of her disadvantage. It may be a learning disability or a personality profile that is holding her back from attaining the same set of skills as her peers. A child that appears unmotivated may in actuality be a child that lacks foundational reading skills, or may have a difficult time with multitasking. A boy who has difficulties pointing into the Gemara may feel that listening and reading the Gemara simultaneously may be too large of a mountain for him to scale, and thus he gives up.
Often parents will see this same lack of skill causing difficulty in other areas as well, although they may not immediately recognize it as such. Clearing the Way: Remediation and Accommodation When a child’s lack of skill is due to the teacher’s inexperience or unfamiliarity with age-appropriate skills, a call to the teacher is in order. If the child lacks ageappropriate skills, remediation is the prescribed remedy. Remediation means to remedy a gap in the child’s skill set through explicit teaching. Can a parent teach her child the skill she’s missing? In many cases, the answer is yes. Instead of asking, “Why is this child not motivated?” we ask, “What skill does my child need in order succeed at this task?” A child who reads before doing homework, for example, might simply need to learn time management skills
or the child has a short attention span, teach each step separately, and with patience. 5. Be there to support your child until the new skill becomes a habit. Don’t expect instant mastery. After determining the skill-set to work on, develop a support system of accommodations for your child. Just as it is unrealistic to expect a child who lacks some vision to see ‘like everyone’ without glasses, it is unrealistic to expect children who lack academic related skills to perform on par, without support, even after a skill has been taught. Try to discern what kind of accommodations would be helpful to your child. Does your child need more frequent breaks in order to focus better? Does your child need a modified spelling list to study from? Don’t be afraid to approach your child’s teacher to request accommodations. An effective educator will be

Find a time when everyone is rested and relaxed before you begin. 2. Demonstrate the skill in an easy to follow, step-bystep manner. 3. Make it a pleasant, even fun, experience and express confidence in your child’s abilities. 4. If the process is a long one
open to it because she knows that education is not ‘one-sizefits-all.’ If your child is struggling in multiple areas, the involvement of a learning specialist may be necessary. Possible External Force #2: Dealing with Big Tasks and Generalized Expectations Sometimes we believe that a child should be able to accomplish certain tasks that seem so doable to us, not realizing that sometimes
we have to go out of our way to teach even mundane, socalled “simple” tasks. I can hear some of you thinking, “What do you mean, I have to teach my child how to prioritize? She’s a seventh grader, for goodness sake!” or “I have to help my child get organized? She’s ten! She should know how to keep her briefcase neat.” ‘Shoulds’ are part of a category of obstacles I call “Big Tasks and Generalized Expectations.” We expect the child ‘should behave,’ ‘should study,’ ‘should do well,’ ‘should be organized,’ and ‘should do her homework.’ There are problems with this. I learned firsthand from my own misplaced expectations. At five years old, one of my children was still not getting dressed on her own. Having a five-year-old, a three-year-old, and one-yearold to dress each morning made for some stressful moments, to say the least. Raising the bar on the stress level was the voice in my head that kept saying, “She’s five. She should be able to dress herself already. She just likes to be catered to.” That is, until an occupational therapist pointed out to me that this child had severe difficulty with motor planning. She was not able to break down a large task, like dressing herself, into a couple consecutive of steps. She couldn’t even take the first step, because she didn’t know what the first step was. ‘Shoulds’ don’t tell our children how. Close your eyes and allow this image to form in your mind.: Imagine a house that

has been vandalized. The house’s contents have been emptied from drawers, closets and cabinets; strewn about in wild, haphazard piles that are several feet high. Now imagine being told to put everything back in its rightful spot. If you’re anything like me, the thought of tackling this monumental project is so overwhelming that you’d feel exhausted just thinking about it. When we express general expectations or give overly large tasks to our children, a child may become burnt out before she even begins. Incredible energy has been expended just by thinking about the monumental task before her. Clearing the way: Break It Down Luckily, there is one effective solution to both problems, and it’s this: break it down. Make it realistic and doable. With my daughter, the OT advised me to teach her and rehearse the steps to getting dressed (take off your pajamas, then put on your . . . ). The transformation was astonishing. I saw similar results when I helped children break down academic tasks into consecutive doable steps. Many children, for example, are completely baffled when they are given an open topic and asked to write about it. Some become exhausted just at the thought of filling up that daunting blank page. Some have no idea where to start, how to even find

the words to begin. When we break down a sizable task into clear steps a monumental task suddenly becomes scaled down to size. The impossible is now possible. Possible External Force#3: Failing to Believe in Her Inner Force What we see as lazy or unmotivated is really a child who’s given up; she’s lost the confidence in her own inner force.
Clearing the Way: Nurture Grit How to nurture grit? It’s simpler than you might think. Help your child learn to appreciate mistakes and accept failure. How do you react when you make a mistake, burn the supper, or forget to buy the most important item on the grocery list? How do you react when children make mistakes, spill the milk, or mess up a recipe? Right. Coming down hard on mistakes stifles grit, because children develop a fear of trying. And if they’ve tried and made a mistake, they’ll be afraid to try again. Mistakes are something to appreciate, because they are evidence of effort and learning. The only person who never makes mistakes is the person who does nothing! If we can appreciate that, we’re on the road to grit. Failure is just a mistake gone further. With each new skill we learn, we fail before we succeed. From learning to walk, to learning to ride a bike - they all have their share of failures. If we can accept our children’s failures calmly, teaching them to pick themselves up and try againwe’ve succeeded in instilling grit. As mothers, we are in a particularly powerful position to instill grit in our children just by doing what we do best – loving them and strengthening our relationship with them. A mother’s unconditional love and secure attachment will keep that natural drive alive!
With each new skill we learn, we fail before we succeed. Do you know which four letters differentiate a child who gives up easily from a child who sticks it out despite hardships and hurdles? (No, this is not a riddle. This is the current hot topic in the education world.) The answer is G-R-I- T. Grit. Grit (as in persistence, perseverance - not grit your teeth) has been the focus of thousands of research dollars. Educational researchers have found that grittiness is a better predictor of success than IQ, and children who don’t have grit often don’t succeed despite potential and talent. While this might seem obvious to those of us who’ve raised children and watched the persistent ones succeed, these findings have created entire movements of educators who’ve adopted the mission of instilling grit in their students. In some public schools, Grit is actually taught as a subject.

Last week, we spoke about home maintenance in general, and specifically about water damage. As the leaves change and the days get shorter, take the time this autumn to prepare for the oncoming cold weather. Ready the furnace for the months of work it will have ahead, and clean out the fireplace. Test them both to ensure they’ll be working when you need the heat. Don’t wait until it’s snowing to clear out your gutters. With upkeep in the fall, you’ll have peace of mind in the winter and more time to hibernate.
INSIDE THE HOUSE HEATING SYSTEM CHECKUP Be sure to change the air filter in your furnace and check its efficiency before the cold weather begins. Call in an HVAC contractor to

test the heating output and give the system a tuneup. This technician can also check for and correct possibly hazardous carbon monoxide levels generated by your heating system. Stock up on several air filters for the winter, and change them every month. If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, purchase one for the system to help lower your energy costs.

CHECK THE FIREPLACE AND CHIMNEY Most chimney sweeps recommend an annual sweeping, but depending on how often you use the fireplace, you might be able to wait on a full sweep. But if you will be using the fireplace often, call a chimney sweep for an inspection. Hopefully you will have your older, seasoned firewood now ready for use after sitting for the spring and summer. It’s recommended to keep the firewood at least 30 feet from the house and covered. Seasoned wood is best for fires, as it burns cleaner and longer.
Don’t wait until it’s snowing to clear out your gutters. After your furnace has been tuned up to its maximum efficiency, take a moment to inspect your heating ducts and vents. Dust them off and clear away anything that may have gotten into them over the summer. Then check your windows for any leaks that may compromise your heating efficiency. If you feel cold air coming in, purchase a plastic sealing kit from the hardware store and place the plastic around the window to

Disconnect garden hoses and, if practical, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to
THE GUTTERS It’s best to inspect and clean the gutters a few times during the fall, especially if there are many leafy trees around your house. If gutters remain clogged, water will spill over them and onto the ground next to the foundation, which may cause damage to the foundation. Gutters and downspouts should be kept clean and should direct water

outside faucets. This reduces the chance of freezing in the section of pipe just inside the house. IN THE GARAGE It is recommended that you empty out unused fuel from any gas-powered equipment stored in the garage, such as a lawnmower, because sediment can build up and clog the fuel lines. Store gasoline in tanks out of children’s reach and have it ready for use in your snowblower or emergency generator, if need be. TEST YOUR EMERGENCY GENERATOR It’s a good idea to have an emergency generator if you live in an area that sees a lot of ice storms, as these are a major cause of

blackouts during the winter. (Remember Hurricane Irene and Superstorm Sandy) So if you have one, haul it out and give it a test run to see if it is in good working order. Make sure you never run the generator in any enclosed space – like your garage – as it will present a carbon monoxide hazard. If you are selling your home and it is empty, have your realtor or property manager check on your home on a regular basis and arrange for the fall maintenance required. If you are not there to see what is going on, much damage can occur without you even being aware of it. An example is a home that was for sale. The homeowner did not realize that the oil had run out so the home had no heat. The pipes froze. They found out because a neighbor called the realtor advertised on the sign to tell them that water was pouring out of the home. The home had been under contract and the buyer backed out because of the extensive damage. It was a very costly to repair and the homeowner did not have the money. The home eventually sold “as is” for $125,000 less than it had been in contract before. Ouch.

Homes with extensive damage from deferred maintenance cannot get a regular mortgage loan. They need to be sold for cash or be financed with a “rehab” mortgage, which is a great loan but ultimately

My client saw beyond the neglect, and purchased this home which needed $140,000 in repairs; but once it was repaired, the appraiser gave the home an “after improved’ value which was $300,000 more than what they had paid for the home. This is further proof that, case after case, the seller will sell for far below market price because a home is not in good shape; sometimes just basic neglect or some deferred maintenance.

דארט מאכט מען זיכער אריינצולייגן אין די קינדער אהבת התפילה און יראת שמים. ווער רעדט נאך פון שלש-סעודות ,וואס דאס איז די הויכפונקט פון דעם שבת ,בשעת דאס ווארעמקייט און ערנסטקייט הערשט אין די לופט ,די זמירות פון שלש-סעודות צוגייט זיך ביי אלעמען אין די גלידער ,עס ווארעמט אן די נשמה און איז מעורר אידישע קינדער צו תשובה ,עס איז א בחינה פון שפכו כמים לבך נוכח פני השם ,השתפכות הנפש אויפן העכסטן פארנעם. מזמן לזמן איז דער בית-המדרש זוכה ,אז עס ערשיינט אויפן ארט א חשוב'ער דמות ,א רב ומשפיע אדער אן אדמו"ר ,וואס וועלט אויס דעם בית-המדרש צו פראווען דארט די תפילות ועריכת-השלחנות. אין אזא שבת ,באקומען די מתפללים חיזוק ועידוד ,קענענדיג אנגיין ווייטער מיט די עבודת-הקודש. אבער עס איז נישט בלויז שבת ,אפילו די וואכן טעג זענען בבחינת שבת ,זייענדיג אנגעפילט מיט תפילות און לימוד התורה .יעדע נאכט איז פאראן א נאכט כולל אין בית-המדרש ,וואו עס זיצן צענדליגע אברכים ועוסקים בתורת השם מיט התמדה ויגיעת-התורה. אז איר וועט אריינקומען אין בית-המדרש אין די נאכט שעות, וועט איר זיך אנשטויסן מיט א קול התורה וואס הילכט אפ צווישן די פיר ווענט פון בית-המדרש ,און מאכט א תורה'דיגע סביבה ארום און ארום .אזוי אז עס לאזט זיך זאגן אויף דער שוהל ,תורה ועבודה במקום אחד. ברם זכור אותו איש לטוב ,הרבני הנכבד מו"ה ר' יודל איינהארן הי"ו ,דער עמוד התווך ובריח התיכון פון דער בית-המדרש ,וואס זארגט און מאכט זיכער פאר אלע געברויכן פון דעם בית-המדרש ,א דאנק אים איז דער בית-המדרש א באקוועמער און ליכטיגער ארט, לטובת המתפללים ,אז מען זאל קענען ממשיך זיין מיט די עבודת-הקודש און קענען דארט דינען דעם אויבערשטן ,אומגעשטערטערהייט.

ווי באקאנט האט זיך דער בית-המדרש ערווארבן א שם-טוב במשך אירע יארן פון עקזיסטענץ ,בשעת לומדי התורה והוגיה האבן געפינען א געשמאקן רואיגן וואונקל צווישן אירע פיר ווענט און דער קול התורה הילכט דארט אפ מיט א געשמאק .יעדער איינער וואס שפאצירט אריין אין בית-המדרש ,ווערט ארומגענומען מיט איר רואיגקייט און געשמאק מיט וואס דער בית-המדרש צייכנט זיך אויס. אויך די תפילות ווערן דארט אפגעראכטן מיט א ווארעמקייט און רגש דקדושה ,וועלכע ווערט שטארק געשעצט און ארויפגעקוקט ביי די שכנים ,דער אמן יהא-שמיה רבה איז א שם דבר אין די גאנצע געגנט ,ווי אזוי אידן שרייען אויס מיט א ווארעמקייט ,ווי צו זאגן "בריותיך אנחנו" .עס לאזט זיך זאגן בפה מלא ,אז אונזער בית-
