A SOLUTION RIGHT HERE (Re: Hitting the Road, Issue 207) I enjoyed the cute story of the family tying their luggage to the roof, only to have it fall off midway through their trip. We all try to figure out ways to pack in as much luggage as possible. I’m not sure if other readers know that advertised every week in The Monsey View classifieds is a gemach for roof carriers. We’ve used it, and it was a tremendous help. The gemach has many different carriers to fit all types of cars, and the one who runs it helps you attach it to your car properly. Travel safe! (Re: Week in Review, Issue 206) I recently heard about a company called CSO Radio in Lakewood that sells a unique type of alert system called Ride ‘N Remind that prevents parents from forgetting a child in a car. The system is activated when the child is put into the backseat, and when the car is turned off, a chime sounds. The rear door must be opened to deactivate the chime, and if it’s not, 40 seconds later the car alarm starts blaring. It’s been proven to save lives. I share this info in the hopes that tragedies will be averted in our community. R.R.

A CAPTIVATING SERIAL (Re: The Cuckoo Clock) I wanted to share that every week when I come home from my weekly shopping trip, I sit down to read The Monsey View. The first thing I turn to is the serial, The Cuckoo Clock. I enjoy the read so much that I call my children and grandchildren to read it too. Keep it up! M.S.

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR It was only 8:05 a.m., but it was already in the mid-70s and uncomfortably humid as I trudged up the hill near my house on the last leg of my early morning exercise hike. There was nothing I wanted to do more than get back to my air-conditioned house and, as I passed by the public school half a block from home, I saw it lying on the floor — a slightly squashed juice box, bearing a B’gan label. I kept on walking but was more than a little disturbed by the juice box, most likely dropped there by a kid who attends the summer program at that particular school. It was painfully obvious that passersby who’d spy it would be critical of our community for littering, and rightfully so; the potential for a chillul Hashem is clearly evident in this situation. Despite the heat and the realization that going back for the juice box meant I was adding more uphill steps to my walk home, I turned around and picked it up. There were a few ants crawling on it, and it still had some juice left inside, making it a rather unpleasant thing to carry home, but I just couldn’t leave it there. I have heard time and time again that if only there were more trash cans there might be less litter in our community, but honestly, that is a pretty

lame excuse. Whether it is a juice box, a potato chip bag, a freeze pop wrapper or anything else, children have to know that they need to either find a garbage can or ask a responsible adult what to do with their trash. We need to parent our kids and teach them that throwing garbage on the floor is not okay, especially because doing so paints every single member of the Monsey community in a bad light. JUST LIKE STEALING As a local store owner, I want to bring a disturbing issue to the attention of some people who may not know better. I’ve recently had several customers purchase expensive items and then dispute the charge, claiming to the credit card company that they got defective merchandise, which we refused to reimburse. Please be aware that this is geneivah, and is just like going into the store and stealing something. After all, the store owner is left without the money that he fairly earned, and such an incident also ruins the store’s reputation, despite their innocence. If indeed you have a problem with merchandise, we are more than willing to fix the issue. A Disturbed Store Owner

Pinchas By: Malka Schneps

A call recently went out to help save the life of a baby named Eliana Cohen. Eliana had been diagnosed with SMA type 2, a rare genetic disease. Because of this disease, Eliana would likely never stand or walk, and would most likely require medical assistance for eating and breathing. A narrow window opened up through which Eliana could be saved: A new drug called Zolgensma was approved in May of this year to treat Eliana’s exact condition, and only one dose of the medication would be required. With this treatment, Eliana could probably stand, walk, eat and breathe on her own — but there were two problems: (1) The treatment is only FDA approved until a child’s second birthday, which, in Eliana’s case, would be July 18 of this year, and (2) That one dose would cost a whopping $2,200,000. So, a treatment for Eliana became available in May but would disappear for her in July, and would cost more than $2 million. Eliana’s parents tried to get their health insurance to cover the treatment, even hiring an attorney and taking the insurance company to court, but the claim was denied. They were running out of time. With just five days to go before Eliana’s second birthday, after which Eliana would no longer be eligible to receive the treatment, the Cohens turned to Klal Yisroel

82 / THE MONSEY VIEW

with a plea for help in raising the money to pay for this treatment. Within three days, the entire amount was raised, and Eliana — who has since been renamed Chana — received the treatment last week. Let us continue to be mispallel for a refuah sheleimah for Chana bas Shani b’soch she’ar cholei Yisroel. In the case of Chana (Eliana), tzedakah may have improved and hopefully saved her life (by potentially lengthening it), but it may have saved more lives than her own. It says in Mishlei, “U’tzedakah tatzil mimaves — Tzedakah saves from death” (Mishlei 10:2). Giving tzedakah can also save the life of the one who gave tzedakah. And giving tzedakah can save others from death as well. That is precisely what Pinchas did when he took action and stopped the plague, according to the Vilna Gaon. The plague had been sweeping through the nation as a consequence of the transgressions of Bnei Yisroel, and 24,000 people had already died. Pinchas took action, and “turned back My anger (chamasi) from upon Bnei Yisroel” (Bamidbar 25:11). Hashem’s anger was turned back, the plague stopped, and Bnei Yisroel stopped dying. One might wonder what the connection is between the action of Pinchas and giving tzedakah. Dovid Hamelech writes, “Pinchas stood up and executed judgment, and the plague was stopped. It was accounted

for him l’tzedakah…” (Tehillim 106:30–31) When it says that Pinchas turned back Hashem’s anger (heishiv es chamasi), the Vilna Gaon points out that the lashon here seemingly should have been bateil (nullified) rather than heishiv (turned back). The Vilna Gaon explains as follows. Every Jew has the obligation to give machatzis hashekel toward the korbanos tzibur. The word machatzis is spelled memches-tzadik-yud-saf. The middle letter, tzaddik, represents tzedakah. Closest to the tzaddik on either side are the letters ches and yud, which spell chai, or life. Farthest from the tzaddik are the letters mem and saf, which spell mes, or death. Staying close to tzedakah brings life, while one who distances himself from tzedakah is considered as dead. “U’tzedakah tatzil mimaves.” So we see that the act of Pinchas was considered “l’tzedakah” and that it saved many lives, but we can see this in the lashon as well. The Torah states that Pinchas turned back “chamasi.” The word chamasi is spelled chesmem-saf-yud. Without the tzaddik in the middle of the word, the ches and yud (chai) are distant, on the outside, and mem-saf (death) is at the center. Pinchas reversed this by doing tzedakah, restoring life and driving away death. May we all give tzedakah with an open hand, and merit life for ourselves and for all of Klal Yisroel.

NY Raising Smoking/Vaping Age to 21 Hoping to prevent teens from developing a deadly habit, Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation raising the legal age for smoking from 18 to 21. The legislation will go into effect on November 13 and applies to both traditional and electronic cigarettes, reported NBC News. “By raising the smoking age from 18 to 21, we can stop cigarettes and e-cigarettes from getting into the hands of young people in the first place and prevent an entire generation of New Yorkers from forming costly and potentially deadly addictions, said Cuomo.

The governor has said that marketing aimed at the more youthful market is at least partially responsible for the large number of people who begin smoking before they turn 21. The American Cancer Society estimates that 95 percent of current smokers picked up the habit before the age of 21. New York joins 16 other states in raising the legal age for smoking, though in some places it may take months, or even years, for those changes to take effect. Several areas in the state had already limited tobacco, but not e-cigarette, sales to those under 21 as of January 1, including New

York City and Rockland, Orange and Westchester Counties. Tobacco continues to be the leading cause of death in New York, with 28,000 adults dying each year as a result of smoking. Vaping, touted by some as a safer alternative, has been raising alarm bells in recent months, with teen usage increasing 160 percent from 2014 to 2018. According to Cuomo’s office, the majority of teens mistakenly believe that e-cigarettes are harmless, not realizing that they contain harmful ingredients, including high amounts of nicotine, which can be addictive.

No Serious Injuries Reported As Multiple Departments Battle Simultaneous Fires in Monsey It was a busy afternoon for local firefighters as numerous departments were called in to battle two separate blazes at the same time on July 19. The first took place in Forshay, with a fire that is believed to have started in the attic, rendering a house that was home to two families uninhabitable. The Journal News reported that approximately 70 firefighters from a dozen volunteer fire departments responded to the fire on Forshay Road, battling flames in weather that topped 90 degrees. The fire, which may have been caused by smoldering candles, worked its way down the rear of the house to the deck. No one was home at the time

88 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

of the fire, and Forshay Road was closed between Crabapple Court and South Parker Drive as fire-

fighters fought to extinguish the flames. Volunteers from the Hillcrest,

Tallman, Spring Valley, Suffern, Hillburn, Sloatsburg, Pearl River, Central Nyack, Nyack, New City, South Spring Valley and Orangeburg fire departments were rotated in and out of the building in 10- to 15-minute shifts because of the intense heat both inside and outside the home. Five firefighters were taken to the hospital for smoke-related issues and later released, with Chaverim of Rockland, Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland County, Ramapo Valley Ambulance Corps, Rockland Paramedics and Spring Hill Community Ambulance Corps all providing vital on-scene services. The Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigations has been working with the Town of Ramapo and the Ramapo Police Department to pinpoint the cause of the blaze, which does not appear to be suspicious in nature. Meanwhile, just two and a half miles south, fire crews were called to another emergency at the Chase Bank parking lot at the corner of Route 59 and College Road, where a driver reported that his car had inexplicably burst into flames while he was driving. With volunteers from the Monsey Fire Department fighting the Forshay Road house fire, crews from Suffern Volunteer Hose Company #1 stepped in and responded to the call. Both the driver and his daughter were able to safely exit the burning vehicle, and no injuries were reported.

Recap: Janek Cohen enlists the help of his wife with smuggling Gustav and Edo out of the orphanage. Emil describes the escape plan to his two young Jewish charges. “And then you’ll come, and you’ll give me more candies?” Edo asked as Emil led him along the darkened corridor. Emil put a finger to his lips and smiled at the little boy. “And tell Gustav not to forget: Before he comes, he should take his candies — you know, the ones you already gave him — out of the hiding place,” the child whispered. “He has a hiding place that’s only his, and only I know where it is. He keeps all kinds of things there, like food and candy. He always puts a little bread there for me, because there’s hardly any food, and once, the director caught him and beat him. So tell him he should bring the candies from there. He said that he’s keeping the candies for me also.” “Shhhh...” This time, Emil placed his finger on Edo’s lips. “Alright, I know how to be quiet,” the boy said, miffed, and fell silent. Emil smiled at him encouragingly. They reached the door of the building. “Run to the gate,” Emil whispered. “Quickly and quietly. A nice lady is waiting for you outside. Go with her.” “Okay!” The boy forgot his injured pride and waved at the older man. “See you, Emil!”

Within three seconds, he was next to the well-trimmed tree just beyond the gate, and he stuck his head out to the street. Ulush Cohen was there in a second. “Are you the cute, little boy who is supposed to come with me now?” she asked. He nodded silently. “Come, let’s go to my house.” They walked hastily, silently. Ulush lowered her eyes to the boy with the baby face. He was scratching his shorn head, looking very confused. She smiled at him again, but he didn’t return her smile. Had she taken the wrong child? “Who told you to go to the gate?” she asked gently, stopping at the corner. The boy’s eyebrows stiffened. “No one,” he said. “I just wanted to go because Emil said that you’ll give me candies.” Her smile widened. Baruch Hashem, it was the right child. And thankfully, it was she who had asked the question and no one else. “That’s right,” she said, without knowing how she would procure candies. “I don’t have any at this moment, but afterward, you will come with me to a place where there are sweets, and good people who like you.” He stared at her for a minute, and

then shifted his eyes back to his shoes, taking step after step. A car was waiting for them at the corner, as Janek had promised. Janek himself was seated behind the wheel, with one of his friends at his side. He waited in silence until Ulush and Edo were seated in the back seat. Only when the door closed and the car lurched forward, did he murmur, “Baruch Hashem.” “Baruch Hashem.” “Was it all right?” “All perfect.” “No one saw you? No one asked anything?” “No one asked a thing. Did anyone see? Well, I hope not. Tell me something.” She suddenly switched to Yiddish. “Who told you that he’s Jewish? His eyes, his hair... Is Emil positive that this is a Jewish boy?” “Emil would not have put all of us, including himself, in danger if he wasn’t sure about it. He went into the office there and checked the documents. Edo is Jewish.” The little boy smiled at the sound of his name, but a second later, his face grew somber again. “Jewish?” He touched his blond, closely-cut hair “Yes, what do you say about that?” Janek asked him. The question wasn’t worded clearly enough for the child, and he retreated into silence. The man sitting next to Janek murmured something. “He can come to our house now, right, Ulush?” “Yes, sure,” she said. “Do you want to come to my house, sweetie?” she asked the boy. He nodded.

Something like eight, maybe less, maybe more.” “Fine,” she said. “We’ll find them a place to sleep.” ULUSH LOOKED AT the two children sitting quietly on her pair of floral armchairs. The younger

one leaned on the side of the chair so that he was closer to his older friend. “You’re not brothers, are you?” she asked in a friendly tone. “No,” the one who had introduced himself as Gustav said. “Because you look a bit alike. Your eyes are the same color.” She served them a plate with a few slices of cake on it. “I’m like his brother,” Gustav said, his mouth full of cake crumbs. “And I told Emil that he’s also Jewish, and that you should take him and also find his mother and fa-

ther.” Janek approached. “Yes, Emil told me how responsible you are.” He was holding two white papers in his hand. “He took this from the office of your orphanage,” he said. “These are the only documents you have. The orphanage gave you the name Gustav, right?” “Yes,” the boy said, eyeing the cake plate, “but I don’t remember how old I was when I arrived.” “Is it possible that this was your real name?” Janek placed another slice of cake in Gustav’s hand.

Dessert Pizzas

Recipes and text: Draizy Wercberger Food prep and styling: Yita Ruchy Grunfeld Photo credit: Moshe Grunfeld Photography 917-858-1054

In my kitchen, the Betty Crocker pizza maker reigns supreme! After using it day after day after day after day for breakfast, I wondered if I could make use out of it for desserts as well. These are the delicious results! The following three recipes for dessert pizzas are all made using store-bought pizza dough, which simplifies the process immensely. It is an extremely exciting activity for the children to be part of, and of course, it’s even more exciting for them to eat the end results!

AMAZON “MOTHERSHIP” AND HER DARLING LITTLE DRONES

There are certain sights that embed themselves in the memory because they’re just so surprising. One of those is the famous imagery of the Amazon “mothership” surrounded on all sides by little baby drones. In it, the smaller machines swarm in the airspace near the gigantic blimp from which they’ve departed, flying hither and thither, each en route to a programmed destination where they’ll drop their package.

120 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Is this where the world is up to? I pondered when I saw it. Are we really this foolish? The concept of an airborne base for autonomous flying objects seemed like a really bad idea to me, because once a technological advancement is reached by neutral or friendly parties, it’s not long until fiendish forces catch up. The good news is the Amazon mothership and her hatchlings were simply the work of a talented graphic artist — not a team of engineers. We’re not quite up to that stage… yet. But the day of the drone has arrived. WHEN ONE THINKS OF DRONES, the image that comes to mind is usually the iconic Predator, known for its bulbous nose and windowless face. That original make of Predator is credited with finding Osama bin Laden in year 2000, but it was unable to eliminate him, as Air Force captain Scott Swanson wrote: As I orbited our Predator over Tarnak Farms, a dusty jumble of buildings in a mud-walled compound just outside Kandahar, Afghanistan, we spotted a strikingly tall man in white robes being treated deferentially by a group of men... The U.S. had been searching for OBL for years and now here he was, exquisitely framed on our screen.

At that point in time, the Predator was but an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), controlled by remote pilot. Only later would it, and its successors, be upgraded to the status of Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV), capable of carrying and discharging a payload. But back in 2000, with Osama in its crosshairs, Predator pilots could do nothing but look. Since that time, the Predator has been remade and then retired, and different combat drones have taken center stage.

Moreover, drone fever has infected the non-military population, causing a new era of starry-eyed UAV enthusiasts to fly unarmed drones for sport. Many of them have even used their fascination with these machines to save lives, instead of taking them. Here are some ways drones have truly delivered, Amazon mothership notwithstanding...

Stuck on a steep cliff, able to go neither ance from disaster? up nor down, they realized they had only one option: to call for help. They dialed 112 — the Icelandic equivalent of 911 — and settled in to wait for rescuers to arrive. Meanwhile, the sun set and the two of them remained perched on the side of a mountain as the cold became even colder. Rescue teams were dispatched, but in a Explosives delivered by drone may sound like a mountainous region of thousands of miles, how were nightmare, but for those living in snow-capped mounthey to find two small human beings? tain regions, it just might be the stuff of dreams. In recent years, drones have proved extremely helpful in aiding rescuers with locating people lost in the woods, but they’ve also come in handy during disaster situations. In the 2017 hurricane season when parts of America were devastated, drones were put to good use helping rescuers find accessible routes to reach survivors. Moreover, drones specifically equipped to detect thermal changes in a landscape empowered rescuers to more easily locate living humans. ensuring that danger is kept at a distance. There are many other jobs with inherent danger that have led workers to discover the benefits of drones. Miners, for instance, are harnessing the technology to send drones into deep, dark places to scout out potential dangers such as weak structure or obstacles in shafts. Nuclear facilities have also developed a special appreciation for drones, using them to conduct inspections on equipment that would previously expose workers to high doses of radiation. With their flying eyes, drones such as the acclaimed Elios are able to enter dangerous or unknown territories and force them to give up their secrets, allowing the drone operator to safely see even minute details of an object or location — all while his feet are planted firmly on the ground. Tall buildings, high bridges, deep crevasses… all are able to be explored with the help of drones, leaving the potential dangers of scaffolding and climbing out of the equation — and opening up a world of exploration possibilities! The data a drone delivers is invaluable!

Despite one talented graphic artist’s Amazonthemed art, drones making commercial deliveries on a daily basis in our part of the world isn’t really a “thing” yet — though Amazon is actually working to make that a reality. Over in Rwanda, though, drones are local heroes. Every day, children of all ages can be seen hugging the fence at Zipline’s launch pads, cheering the drones that are manually catapulted into the air before autonomous flight takes over and the GPS systems guide them to their destinations. For these children, Zipline drones and their operators

are viewed similarly to the way we view our local EMTs. In rural, less developed countries like Rwanda, people die daily from simple infections, bleeds that shouldn’t snuff out life, and other medical complications. Many times, all it would take is a dose of medicine or enough of the right blood type to save someone. But in small backwoods hospitals, stocking sufficient amounts of blood, for instance, isn’t always possible, due to both space constraints and financial costs. Enter Zipline. Beginning in 2016, Zipline developed a system to deliver blood and

thousands of lives, and as they say, “one good deed deserves another”; Zipline has now expanded to deliver blood and medicines to many places in the country of Ghana.

Now… back to Amazon. With all of the wonderful things drones are capable of being manipulated to do, what made me bristle when I saw that mothership and her babes? The sad fact of the matter is that drones remove humans from the equation, leaving a flying object to reach its destination with little fear of anyone forcefully stopping it. Should a drone be shot down, no life would be lost, causing the deterrent of fear for personal safety to vanish. That, coupled with the abilZIPLINE DRONES ARE NO-FUSS CONTRAPTIONS THAT HAVE NO LANDING GEAR AND ARE MANUALLY LAUNCHED. A LINE SNAGS EACH ONE AND BRINGS THEM IN FOR A LANDING.

STRUCTURE OF A DRONE Think you know drones? Think again. Drone design has progressed far beyond the airplane-like Predator of the past. Here’s a look at some current drone designs.

Quadcopters are multirotor drones with four engines. These are the most popular, and are often used in small versions for anything ranging from SAR missions to surveillance. Trick drones, too, are popular, often used as toys for children. Many of them are small enough to fit into the palm of a hand. There are also large versions now being made that can carry human beings! Companies located as far as China and as close as Texas have already finished manufacturing some of these quadcopter vehicles and are hoping to bring what was once futuristic travel into our current reality!

The amount of engines on a drone can range anywhere from three to eight.

This blue and orange model of Amazon’s hybrid test drone was able to vertically rise and land. Amazon probably won’t be going with this design, having recently unveiled a different one that is expected to begin delivering packages in the next few months.

ity of a drone to drop a package — or payload — on any GPS coordinate or location a pilot desires, means that there is tremendous destructive potential within this technology. Now add a mothership and hundreds of drones, and you begin to feel the trepidation I felt... To make matters worse, it is highly likely that as drone fever rises, newer, better versions will be manufactured in far-off places where there is little accountability. Should powerful drones find their way into the wrong hands, the laws of warfare — which are already devastating enough — may change, eliminating faces from forces, leaving established armies fighting unknown villains. Truly anyone can become their own warlord, given the right amount of cash… The good news is, I’m not the only one who felt that bristle. Some of the more respectable countries around the world are actively at work developing protective laws and measures against rogue drones and dangerous droners. Take France, for instance THIS BULKY CONTRAPTION IS A POINT-ANDSHOOT DRONE JAMMER, THE NEROD F5.

126 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

(we’ll leave anti-Semitism on the side, for the moment): At a recent celebration in Paris, fantastical military creations were on display for the public for the first time. One of those was the Nerod F5 drone jammer. With the push of a button, military or police personnel can disrupt the GPS and communications systems of drones, causing them to fall from the sky. (Most drones are created with a fall-back option that allows them to gently glide rather than drop like dead weight, minimizing risk of harm to people in the landing path.) The truth is that the world is well

aware of the threat of drone abuse, and there are many who are working hard to ensure a high level of safety for citizens of this, and other, countries. With the passage of time and the continued inventions of man, drones will be further developed and refined, and that may bring with it both pleasant and painful news. Either way, the drones of the day have delivered a message loud and clear: All things on earth contain within them the power to either build or destroy, to give life or to take it... It is up to us to use everything wisely.

“Oh, look, a Brink’s truck!” The call comes from the backseat, and everyone turns to look. A Brink’s truck! The iconic Brink’s truck is surrounded by an aura of mystery — and power. Bullet-resistant exterior, armed guards inside… It’s a secure bank on wheels, transferring cash and other valuables from place to place. But these armored trucks aren’t afraid to announce that there’s reason for the caution — that the load they’re carrying is probably worth more than you can imagine, and then some. And indeed, every pedestrian crossing its path knows what may be inside. But to a robber… Oh, to a robber, these trucks smile and wink like the temptations they are, and sometimes the stories don’t end with a simple crossing of paths.

In 1950, a group of 11 men pulled off the Great Brink’s Robbery, or what was then called “the crime of the century.” And the robbery wasn’t so called for naught; it was the largest heist in the United States up until that point, and remained so until some three and a half decades later. The first step of the plan was executed easily as two of the robbers gained access to the Brink’s Building in Boston, where they removed the cylinders from five locks so a locksmith could create duplicate keys for them — to be used when the time would come. The planning was careful, the preparations intricate. It took two whole years until they actually acted. The same pair who’d entered the building previously also stole the alarm plans for the site; another gang member figured out the patterns of the staff’s schedules by keeping track of which lights were on in which areas of the building at what time; and a third member of the group monitored the goings-on at the building’s depot from a tenement building across the street. The group pulled off some practice runs when the building was empty, and then they sat and waited for the right moment to strike… Finally, on January 17, 1950, they were ready to act. (This was their seventh attempt; the first six had been aborted when circumstances proved less than ideal.) Clothed in peacoats and hats that matched the Brink’s uniform, they used their duplicated keys to enter the building and made it up to the second story. They en-

tered silently — their rubber shoes keeping their footfalls inaudible, their masks obscuring their faces — and immediately found five Brink’s employees who were doing what they did best — sorting and counting money. Before the employees could react, they were bound and gagged, and the band of robbers were free to grab whatever they pleased. They moved fast, gathering and then immediately dividing the loot so they could leave as quickly as they’d come. After all, they each had alibis planned that they still needed to put into place; they all wanted to be accounted for elsewhere during the time the robbery occurred. Soon each of the 11 men were clutching their cut of the loot, and they scattered. According to plan, they wouldn’t touch that money for six years, at which time the statute of limitations (the amount of time a person can be convicted of a crime) would be up. All in all, they stole $2.775 million, an unbelievable sum of money, even by today’s standards. Despite Brink’s offer of $100,000 to whoever had information about the robbery, the police and FBI had a very difficult time rounding up the thieves. Eventually some of the robbers were arrested for other crimes, the FBI managed to get some information out of a few of

Brink’s was founded in 1859 by Perry Brink, a resident of Chicago, Illinois. While Brink’s is known most for their armored trucks, today they do much more than the transporting of valuables. According to Brink’s, they are the largest cash management company, and they provide services including cash-in-transit, ATM replenishment and maintenance, transportation of valuables, cash management and payment services. At this point, Brink’s operates worldwide and employs over 62,000 people, works out of 1,200 facilities and owns 13,500 easily recognized vehicles.

them, and finally, only a couple of days before the statute of limitations would be up, the FBI arrested all gang members, besides the ones already in prison and one who was no longer alive. Shockingly, only a scarce $58,000 of the loot was recovered.

The year 1981 brought some more Brink’s drama, this time in a little hamlet in New York named Nanuet… At five minutes before 4:00 p.m., two Brink’s guards, Peter Paige and Joseph Trombino, exited Nanuet Mall with a couple of bags full of money. Unbeknownst to them, a group of robbers were watching — and waiting. The robbers ambushed the guards as soon as they began dumping the money into their armored truck, and Paige was killed on the spot. Trombino was injured, as was the driver of the Brink’s vehicle, and the robbers ran off with $1.6 million in cash. The shootout immediately attracted the attention of the police, and soon units from

THE MEMORIAL PLAQUE LOCATED AT THE SHOPS AT NANUET COMMEMORATING THE MEN WHO DIED IN THE HEIST.

Oddly, Trombino, the Brink’s guard who was injured in the attack, seemed to have a disturbing tendency to find his life in jeopardy. After nearly losing his life in this Brink’s attack, Trombino narrowly escaped the 1993 World Trade Center bombing — and he was eventually killed in the next World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001, while making a delivery in the North Tower.

all over Rockland County converged at the mall and spread out, on the lookout for the two getaway vehicles. Unfortunately, when the chase ended at the ramp to the NYS Thruway off Route 59, the robbers were ready for the police as well, and another shootout ensued. Sadly, one police officer was killed on the spot and another died an hour later. And the robbers? They got away. Thankfully, the police tracked down most of the

group before long — and found $800,000 in one of the getaway cars while they were at it — though it took five full years until all suspects were apprehended. Today, a small memorial sign stands near the entrance to Macy’s in Nanuet, at the spot where the Brink’s truck was parked. The plaque commemorates all those who lost their lives in the incident.

The Nanuet heist recently made headlines when Governor Andrew Cuomo granted parole to Judith Clark, a former radical and the driver of one of the getaway cars used in the robbery. Clark was one of the three who first went on trial after the incident, and she, as well as the two other defendants, were convicted and charged with armed robbery and three counts of murder. News of Clark’s parole was met with harsh criticism from the families of the victims, members of the law enforcement, and citizens, who all felt that letting Clark free was going against everything that the criminal justice system stands for. Cuomo was also called out for neglecting to reach out to the victims’ families and to a police officer who was injured in the shooting, which would have been the proper thing to do under the circumstances. Rockland County Executive Ed Day said that the parole board’s decision was “a cruel and unjust slap in the face to the families of the victims,” and indeed, Michael Paige, son of the Brink’s guard killed during the robbery, said that his family as well as himself were “outraged and disgusted at the decision.” According to Paige, granting Clark’s parole was “a grave injustice to my father and the two police officers and everything they stood for and died for.”

Approximately 12 years later, Brink’s was attacked again, this time in Rochester, New York. During this robbery, the fifth largest in U.S. history, four men stole a neat $7.4 million from the Brink’s Armored Car Depot. Shockingly, one of the four men accused was a former Rochester police officer. Seemed he grew tired of sitting around at the righteous side of the table.

The next time Brink’s was robbed in the United States there were no casualties, but

rather a series of almost-comical dramas instead. This time, the robbery involved a whole lot of safety vests, a tire tube, and a suspect who knew how to pull off a heist that took the media by storm. On one September day in 2008, a Brink’s armored car pulled up to a Monroe, Washington, branch of the Bank of America. Suddenly, a landscaper clad in a blue shirt, blue hat and a yellow safety vest approached the armed guard, pepper-sprayed him in the face, and ran off with $400,000 in cash. By the time police arrived, the bank’s parking lot was swarming with men dressed in clothes that perfectly matched the description of the robber’s! Turned out they were all responding to a phony ad placed a day before, and they believed they were being hired by whoever it was that instructed them to show up at this time and place wearing the clothes described in the ad… How ingenious! In the meantime, the robber escaped on… an inner tube, which took the man on a ride down the nearby Woods Creek. Apparently, this thief wasn’t running out of original ideas so fast. However, clever robber or not, he was apprehended a few months later after a homeless man left a tip for the FBI. This fellow had witnessed a practice run before the robbery took place, and he reported the information. Eventually, DNA supplied the evidence needed for a conviction, and the thief was placed behind bars.

This last event involving a Brink’s money bag is simply here as an attempt to restore some hope in humanity. In 2014, California resident Joe Cornell spotted a money bag falling out of the back of a Brink’s car. He picked it up and found no less than $125,000 cash inside. However, Cornell was a man of integrity, and he returned the bag to Brink’s because, as he said, “It was the right thing to do.” Brink’s was very grateful and rewarded Cornell with a $5,000 reward as well as a $5,000 donation in Cornell’s name to the charity where he worked.

There’s one thing I find more stressful than labeling belongings and packing for camp and country, and that is having my cleaning lady cancel on me when I am labeling belongings and packing for camp and country. Of all the days in the year, the day before I left for the country was the day Ariana chose to cancel. My mind, the room I was buried in, and the bulging box I was attempting to seal with tape were all equally crammed. The never-ending list was growing in one direction while my patience was thinning in the other. Amid the tumult, the doorbell chimed. Must be the grocery order, I thought, and I hurried to answer, a piece of adhesive gnarled between my teeth. By the time I got to the door, the delivery boy was gone and two boxes were waiting for me at the doorstep. I lugged them in, and as soon as the second box was safely inside, it dawned on me that only one box had been packed when my order was rung up. This meant that despite the name the labels on both boxes were sporting, one of them was not mine. When the patience reserve is at its lowest and the

nerves stretched taut, there’s no mental storage left for a delivery flop. There goes another mystery to crack, I thought impatiently as I left the two boxes at the doorstep. The delivery guy better pick up the wrong box fast. I’d risen extra-early in the morning to put together a “nosh order” for my son in yeshivah — since one of the maggidei shiurim who commuted every day at the crack of dawn was willing to take it with him the following morning — and now I had to deal with someone else’s box in addition to the myriad other things begging for my attention. “I’ll send over the delivery boy right away, and we’ll figure out who the owner of your second box is,” the delivery manager said once I reached him. Instead of letting out my frustration on the delivery manager with a vent of how fed up I was with the whole delivery system, I shlepped off another piece of tape and ferociously attacked my packing. My annoyance was a definite motivator in getting the job done. The doorbell rang again a few short minutes later. The delivery boy arrived, and I didn’t pay him much heed as he disappeared with one of the boxes. I waved him off, simply thrilled the errant box was taken care of. Now the nosh order, waiting patiently in the other box, needed to get to the maggid shiur. At last, my husband delivered the nosh box to Rabbi Berkowitz. And all the packing was done. Whew! I straightened my snood and sat down to my first meal of the day: a gourmet supper of frozen pizza. I took a bite, the oozing cheese scalding my tongue, and suddenly the phone rang. “Hi, is this Wieder?” the caller said. “Speaking. Who’s this?” “I just wanted to let you know that there’s a grocery box on our driveway with your name and address on it. It seems as though your grocery order was delivered to the wrong house.” I nearly gagged. No way. I’d had it! I dropped the plate of pizza, covered the receiver with my hand, and turned to my husband. In a hushed tone, a litany of complaints erupted. “Some nice fellow just called to inform me of a major box discovery. I don’t get it! Do

you? The delivery guy comes to pick up the box and then drops it off at a random house? I bet you the manager instructed him to return the box to the store. It’s not even our box!” My husband suppressed a chuckle and tried to appear sympathetic. But really, there wasn’t much to do at this point. The supermarket was closed by then, and we would have to wait for the morning to solve the box mystery. “Don’t lose much sleep over it,” my husband said. “As long as the nosh order is on the way, we can be calm.” I nodded in a trance, turning to wish the caller goodbye. The heaviness of the day was getting to me and I needed sleep. Desperately. As I hung up the phone, my husband suddenly slapped his forehead with his palm, emitting peals of laughter, “That’s the nosh order!” “And?” I asked, the appeal of the humor not setting in. At all. “Rabbi Berkowitz asked me to leave the box on the driveway, and he said he’d put it in his car. Apparently, the caller saw our label on the unclaimed box and must’ve thought that it was delivered to the wrong address.” “Oh, my!” I said, catching on. “I think I need to bentch the delivery guy.” I tumbled into bed. “Order saga officially over,” I declared triumphantly. Visions of my son’s grin when he’d open the box to find all of his favorite goodies made my sleep all the more peaceful. Before my brain even registered that night had descended, the velvety skies were replaced with streaks of blue and white. My son was my first caller every morning, and this morning was no different. “Hi, Mommy! How’s your day coming along?” (Ummm…almost starting.) “Thank you so much for the order! Rabbi Berkowitz just dropped it off. How did you know we were planning a barbecue?” He was chuckling. “Or are you putting me on a diet? The steel wool, onions and potatoes are for sure gonna come to good use! But the nosh? Are you going to deprive me of some goodies? I still want them!” So no, the order saga was far from over. My son’s nosh box had been dropped off whoknows-where by the delivery guy, and whoknows-whose box was delivered to my son. So if you received my son’s nosh box, I’ll take that as a sign from Above: Go ahead and enjoy it. And if you want your barbecue supplies and vegetables, I can be contacted through The Monsey View.

FUN FACTS The ubiquitous brown vehicles are referred to not as “trucks,” but as “package cars,” since UPS wanted to distinguish itself as a delivery company as opposed to a trucking company. Their trailers, for the same reason, go by the name “feeder vehicles.”

If founder James Casey had his way, those trucks — oops! package cars — would’ve been canary yellow. But he was persuaded to go with brown, a color of sophistication, which, more importantly, camouflages dirt.

During WWII, when UPS drivers were on the battlefield on the other side of the Atlantic, many women, known as “Brown Bettys,” took over the wheel.

The billionth UPS package was delivered in 1946, almost 40 years after the company’s inception. Compare that to today, when in 2018 alone, 5.2 billion packages were delivered.

For most of its history, UPS’ main competitor was the USPS. So stiff a competitor were they that it took 68 years (1907– 1975) for UPS to realize the dream of providing coast-to-coast delivery. Today, their top competitor is FedEx, followed by DHL.

The way one customer expresses it, UPS is the best at logistics: UPS tracking: “Your package is in X City, USA, on a truck driven by Bob and will be at your door at 2:37 p.m.” FedEx: “Your package is somewhere. You’ll get it when we give it to you.”

UPS serves 220 countries and territories, and every single address in North America and Europe.

USPS: “What package?”

THE CENTER OF THE WORLD The UPS central location, known as Worldport, is in Louisville, Kentucky. This location (as well as FedEx’s “Hub” in Memphis, Tennessee) was chosen for being just a two-hour plane ride from most of the U.S. and for its fair weather. Every night some 125 planes land at Worldport, from which huge containers are unloaded and taken to the sorting center. Packages are then scanned, after which they travel on miles of conveyor belts where they are mechanically diverted to different routes. Finally, they land in the bag they belong. The bags containing the packages are automatically routed to a container, which is taken to a plane headed to the package’s destination.

152 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 24, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

About 416,000 packages are sorted per hour in Worldport. The entire process takes just a few hours, and on some runs, only two sets of human hands are involved.

More than 200 companies moved to the Louisville region to be close to Worldport.

A DELIVERER’S DAY Here’s a glimpse of what’s part and parcel of being a UPS driver. Drivers must attend and graduate Integrad, a training class that teaches them how to handle heavy boxes (carry them above the belt, and place the package down before stepping down) and to start the truck single-handedly while buckling up with the other to shave a few seconds off the route. They’re made to walk down slick surfaces and practice the right way to fall, and executives even bring penguins in as part of the course so drivers can learn some balancing tricks from these waddlers.

Many drivers learn to carry bribe material for angry dogs they meet in their day’s work who don’t take well to the invasion of their private turf. Getting bitten is unfortunately one of the occupational hazards UPS drivers face more often than they would like.

If a driver appears to be in a hurry, that’s because he is! He’s being tracked by his superiors to make sure no time is wasted. Drivers are also encouraged to avoid left turns, since this was proven to waste time; instead they’re told to turn a right-hand loop to get to their destinations, and routes are generally designed to avoid left turns.

Fortunately, UPS is understanding about their driver’s occasional need to doublepark in order to do the job, because when a driver is caught in an illegal spot it is UPS who covers the bill. In a 2013 report, it was found that New York City raked in $2.8 million alone from combined parking tickets between FedEx and UPS.

Driving a UPS truck is not a bad-paying job, averaging at about 30 dollars an hour. Included is also a pension and health care plan. If you see a UPS truck arriving with your parcel, save the driver some precious seconds by going up to the truck to fetch it. In their minute-to-minute schedule, every second saved really does count.

Drivers are kept physically fit and active by their duties, which often involve loading their own truck with hundreds of packages, and of course, dropping them off at each destination. Employees are rewarded for good behavior. Doing five years without an accident earns a driver a reward, one they can choose from a number of retailers’ catalogs. These rewards get better as a perfect driving record advances, but one avoidable accident, and they’re back to square one.

Senior drivers get to bid for preferable routes. And so they’ll usually have the rural routes — more driving, less shlepping.

UPS package cars are not equipped with heating or AC. How do drivers handle severe weather? Simple. They keep doors closed in the winter and open in the summer. There’s currently a petition in progress in response to this week’s heat wave to demand that UPS start providing their drivers with air-conditioned vehicles. It can be signed on change.org. If you see a driver with a UPS bomber jacket or Circle of Honor arm patch, it’s time to salute! He’s received it after 25 years without a single avoidable accident!

NOTABLE DELIVERIES In 1987, an iceberg chunk roughly the size of a fridge was delivered by UPS to a children’s museum in Venezuela.

In 2007, UPS shipped two 13-foot, 2,200-pound whales in tanks from Taiwan to Atlanta. The shipment required specialized trailers, a police escort, as well as aquarimum vets to monitor their charges.

In 2008, the Terracotta Army, a huge group of 2,200-year-old Chinese life-sized sculptures of terracotta warriors and horses, shipped via UPS to four American museums for exhibition. July 24, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 153 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
