(Inbox, Issue 205) I read your letter regarding accepting children into schools and would like to comment on it. I am a member of the vaad of a local mosed that reviews applications for students applying to join our school. Our vaad has been given guidelines by our morah hora’ah in line with the standards of our mosed about what to be makpid on when determining whether a specific family is suitable for us. No mosed functions without daas Torah backing it. When parents cry out in pain about the fact that they were not accepted, I cry along with them. I have sleepless nights and daven for them to be accepted into other schools. Accepting children when a vaad does not feel the family meets the standards of the school is shortsighted. In a short time, the values of the home and school will clash, and the child will be confused and will lose the respect for either the home or the school (either way, it is catastrophic). Parents arrive at our doors promising to change and agreeing to sign anything we want them to. However, experience has taught us that too often signatures and promises are meaningless once the children are accepted into the school. Newly married couples, who are adults and make their own free choices, need to do deep soul-searching when they have their first child. Where would they eventually like to send this little baby to? The idea is not to get onto a “waiting list,” but to create a “change list.” Stop blaming the system, and look yourselves in the mirror! Ask yourself: What do I really want for my children, and am I living in accordance with the values of the mosdos I will want and beg to get into? The choices you make today will affect your children’s school choices. The decision is yours: What is more important to you — your dress, your

phone, your car, your vacation plans — or your child’s chinuch? The time to make this cheshbon hanefesh is now. Promising that change will happen when you meet with a vaad is too little, too late. L.B.

RE: THE CHEDERS AND THE CHINUCH (Inbox, Issue 205) I am writing in defense of the dedicated individuals who are in charge of balancing impossible budgets for our children’s mosdos. May I suggest a system where every parent is obligated to be a member of the tuition and administrative committees for a minimum of five years? So much of the negativity would evaporate once parents are on the other side of the table. Even the highest-paying parent’s tuition does not nearly cover the expenses of educating their child. Yes, there are struggling parents. However, tuition for too many is a last priority, and sadly, our children are paying the price. Too many schools exchange talented, devoted and capable teachers for young and inexperienced ones only because they just can’t afford higher salaries. U.A.

Though I enjoy reading The Monsey View, I was deeply disturbed by the letters in your Inbox that had so much negativity targeting our holiest institutions: batei chinuch! In order for chinuch to be successful, a partnership between school and home is crucial. Children are strongly influenced by their parents’ and other adults’ perspective, and care must be taken before discussing these issues publicly. Without adequate background information, it is easy to jump to conclusions. If there are concerns, parents would be wiser to have a respectful conversation with school personnel who have the power to make changes than to “preach to the choir.” Anyone involved in the chinuch of our children deserves our highest accolades of praise, even though they are human and make some mistakes. A.B.

THE START OF OUR DAY (Re: FYI, Issue 204) In the FYI about Monsey Chedarim, Shevy Hollander wrote that the first student of Yeshivah Degel HaTorah gets picked up at approximately 6:50 a.m. and that the last class is dismissed at 6:00 p.m. I just wanted to clarify that I get picked up at 6:41 a.m. and dropped off at 6:10 p.m. A Sixth Grader at Yeshivah Degel HaTorah

AN ISSUE RESOLVED I’d like to extend a thank you to the Highway Department. Our neighborhood was having a growing problem with water that was pooling on our properties. We even had a pair of ducks come to live in our new "backyard pond"! After getting in touch with the Highway Department, Mr. Fred Brinn himself came to check the area with a few of his workers. Despite having to rent some specialized equipment necessary to do this work, they did whatever needed to be done. And after Thursday's heavy rains, we saw that it had worked! The rainwater drained well, and our yards remained solid land! Thank you to Mr. Brinn and his capable team! The Southgate and Brockton Neighborhood

ME’ORER FOR MODESTY I would like to be me’orer the public of an important halacha in tznius that seems to be an issue in this year’s women’s and girls’ clothing. The button-down front of dresses and skirts need to reach the bottom of the dress; if it doesn’t, one should sew it down. Otherwise, there is a slit down the front of the dress, which poses a tznius issue (even if the slit is low enough). Wishing everyone a safe and healthy summer, Concerned About Tznius

From Monsey to Norfolk: Local Volunteers Run Command Center in Search for Hero Rebbi It was a heartbreaking six-day effort to find a Virginia rebbi who vanished from sight after attempting to rescue an 11-year-old boy who was struggling in rough ocean waters on a day camp trip that went horribly wrong, with Chaverim of Rockland called in to lead the search efforts. VIN News reported that Rabbi Reuven Bauman, the son of Monsey residents, was with campers and another staff member at False Cape State Park in Virginia Beach when the tragedy unfolded on July 9. Within hours, a family member contacted Chaverim of Rockland coordinator Yossi Margaretten asking for help in finding the missing rebbi. Margaretten was in contact with Rabbi Sender Haber, rav of the Norfolk kehillah, and Achiezer of the Five Towns, leveraging his local Coast Guard contacts to get in touch with the local sector unit and imploring them not to abandon their search for Rabbi Bauman. Over the next few days, Margaretten and a team of Chaverim volunteers who made the 400-mile trip to Virginia proved to be a valuable resource, running the command center and working with volunteers from various Jewish communal agencies, as well as local officials, to continue the search by boat, helicopter, jet ski and on the beaches. As the week went on, arrangements were made to hire fishing boats to continue the search throughout Shabbos. Many of the volunteers, including the Chaverim team, returned home for Shabbos, turning around after havdalah and heading back to Virginia

Beach to continue their search. Taking the Coast Guard’s recommendation based on winds and tides in the area, the command center focused the search efforts on the waters near the North Carolina border, and Rabbi Bauman was found by members of Misaskim Maryland on Sunday afternoon. Two levayas were held on Monday for the 35-year-old father of five, the first in Norfolk and the second at the K’hal Adath Jeshurun chelka of the King Solomon Memorial Park in Clifton, New Jersey. Rabbi Bauman was recalled by family members, Rabbi Haber and KAJ’s chief rabbi Rav Yisroel Mantel as a true moser nefesh and a walking kiddush Hashem, who even in his death was mekadesh Shem Shamayim, bringing Klal Yisroel together in a tremendous show of achdus as people all across the world said Tehillim, gave tzedakah and did mitzvos in his merit. Distinguished by Rav Mantel as a hero for his selfless actions, Rabbi Bauman was laid to rest in the front row of the chelka amid esteemed KAJ rabbonim and community leaders including Rav Yosef Breuer, Rav Shimon Schwab, Rav Zecharia Gelley and Rav Eliyahu Glucksman.

Even Chlorinated Pools Can Be the Source of Parasitic Disease, Warns CDC With the summer season now well underway, officials at the Centers for Disease Control have issued warnings about parasites that can be contracted while swimming. Ramapo Daily Voice reported that the number of reported cases of individuals who contract cryptosporidiosis typically rises each summer. The disease is caused by cryptosporidium, a microscopic parasite which can be spread through water and can survive in chlorinated pools for as long as seven days. According to a statement released by the CDC, cryptosporidiosis is most often contracted by swallowing contaminated water in hot tubs, swimming pools and water playgrounds. Symptoms of cryptosporidiosis include diarrhea, stomach cramps, dehydration, nausea, vomiting, fever and weight-loss, which typically last for one to two weeks, although in some cases they can linger for as long as four weeks. The disease can be more serious in those with weakened immune systems.

CHA P T ER THIRT EEN

Recap: Miri is very concerned when she can’t reach her mother for days on end; Elisheva invites her over to hear the entire amazing story of what is going on in their family. Menachem Auerbach, who runs a money gemach, hears from his wife and daughter how Potolsky, who just borrowed some money before their daughter’s wedding, was buying a topof-the-line wedding gown, as well as a seemingly pricey apartment right in Bnei Brak. Bratislava 5708/1948

Ulush Cohen was wiping the small kitchen table when she heard her husband’s footsteps outside, accompanied by another set of footsteps. She quickly opened the pantry to see if they had enough ingredients for lunch. When she heard the knock, she closed the pantry and hurried to the door. “Welcome,” she said, and then moved aside. Janek walked in with two guests; she knew them already from previous visits. He saw the look of distress in her eyes as she glanced at the pantry, and quickly murmured, “They won’t be eating lunch with us.” “I can run down to the store,” Ulush replied quietly. “No, no,” Janek said. “This is really a short meeting relating to something we’d rather not discuss in the office.” “I understand.” She went back to the kitchen and her wet rag, glancing over her shoulder. From the doorway she had a view into the living room and could see the edge of the floral armchair, as well as the first section of the dining room table. Someone was sitting on the chair, and an ashtray had been put on the table. “It’s two days already…”

“The lists are closed….” “…Cooperating nicely.” “Another child…” Ulush tugged at her kerchief, opened the window to try and ward off the cigarette smoke that would inevitably waft in very soon, and took a few potatoes out of the pantry. Her husband didn’t share information about his activities and various smuggling operations, and it was better that way. He explained to her that this way, both of them were safer. But now things sounded really serious. They’d never come here to plan their next operation. She passed a hand over her forehead as she thought about the certificates that had been promised to them but had not yet materialized. She wanted to leave. She was afraid for Janek. It wasn’t that she was paranoid by nature, but it looked to her like he was taking too many risks lately. She saw him coming home in the middle of the night, dirty, sweating, exhausted and pale, and sometimes literally trembling, but he always smiled. And when she’d ask, “How was it?” he would say only, “Baruch Hashem, it ended successfully.” A chair suddenly scraped back, and Janek entered the kitchen. Ulush shuddered, as if

afraid that she had uttered her thoughts and questions aloud, and he had come in to try to answer them. “This time we need your help, Ulush,” he whispered. “Can you close the window?” “My help?” She quickly pulled the shutters closed. “Yes. It seems that there are two children who need to be smuggled out of an institution here in the city. Tonight. We need a woman to take the younger one. A woman with a child will arouse less suspicion than a man with a child.” “Yes,” she said, focused. “Emil got a job at the place; he’s been working there for five days already.” “Where is it?” “An orphanage in the eastern part of the city. It used to be something officially Catholic; today they’ve lowered their profile a bit.” He leaned onto a chair. “It’s not supposed to be dangerous,” he said. “Emil will bring the child out, and you will continue on with him, as though you are his mother and the two of you are taking an evening walk together.” She nodded, wide-eyed. “And if they chase us?” “I don’t think anyone will chase you. Emil is the only adult there during those hours. One of our cars will be waiting at the corner.” The car wasn’t part of the original plan, but he had added it of his own accord, this very minute. While it was true that in theory Emil was watching the children during those hours, what would happen if the assistant director, who was so overprotective of his charges, happened to be out, and he would meet Ulush and recognize the child with her? She couldn’t be put in such danger. Ulush wasn’t all that brave, but she wasn’t a coward either. “Fine,” she said, and took the knife to cut the first potato. “I think I’m ready.” “I’ll give you clearer instructions later, but that’s the plan in general terms.” He was about to go back to his friends in the living room, but then he turned back to her. “If someone catches you, say that you found the child in the street and that you’re looking for whom he belongs to. He is also being told to say that he went out by himself for a walk and that no one sent him specifically to you.” She smiled. “Fine,” she said. “It will all work out, b’ezras Hashem.” “YOU WILL GO to a place with a lot of candies,” Emil said, as he leaned onto the row of faucets that protruded from the metal pole running along the wall. He brushed the child’s wet hair out of his eyes. “The gate will be open, and you’ll just walk past. A nice lady will wait for you outside, and she’ll take you to a good place, a better place than this.” Around them, the children were running around boisterously and throwing towels at one another. It was so noisy that Emil and Edo could converse easily without being heard. “And if someone catches you in the courtyard or on the street, what will you tell him?”

“That I’m going to look for candies, because I want some,” the boy replied obediently. “Very good. It’s like I didn’t tell you to go.” “And Gustav?” the little boy asked, wiping his face with a towel. “Will he also come with me?” “No.” Emil searched with his eyes for Gustav, the eight-year-old whom he had just gotten to know two days ago, but whose trust he had already acquired. It was a miracle that it was so easy to get these children to trust him; with Gustav, it seemed that he had been waiting all these years for something just like this to happen, for someone to come and take him from this place, “to my mother,” as he said. “Umm...” Emil had stammered, not wanting to shatter his dream. They didn’t talk about the subject again; they only spoke quietly about leaving. Gustav was the one who had told him about Edo, the second Jewish boy in the orphanage, and a quick visit to the locked office during the evening hours affirmed the story. There were two Jewish children here. Two children without a name or identity. The only details recorded about them were their approximate age upon arrival, the date, and the names that Theodore Heinke, the deputy director, had given them. Edo was also easy to persuade, because of his young age, but Emil had only approached him this evening, due to the risk that he would blurt something out to someone who wasn’t involved in the rescue. “Gustav is also going, but not with you. You’ll meet later on.” “He was the one who told you that it’s a good idea to take me along, right?” “Right.” “So why won’t he come with me?” “Because the nice lady can’t take two children into the street with her.” “Oh.” Edo mulled this over and then added, “When will I go?” “I’ll tell you when. You lie down nicely in bed, but don’t fall asleep. I’ll come in like I always do to tell everyone goodnight, and then I’ll talk to you.” “And I shouldn’t tell anyone, right?” “Right. You’re a very smart boy.” Emil smiled, and then he abruptly raised his voice. “Max and Berno, what are you doing over there? Do you know that you have to be in bed in five minutes? Pick up the towel, Max, because if it gets wet, you’ll have to be up early to wash it yourself, along with some other towels, you hear?” He patted the boy on the shoulder and sent him toward the door of the washing room. “In five minutes I’ll be starting to walk through the rooms, my friends.” He clapped his hands. “Anyone who wants to miss the last chapter of my suspense story should make sure not to be in bed by then.” And he sincerely hoped that the last chapter of his suspense story would have a very happy ending indeed. To be continued...

DYING EMBERS 94 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 17, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

“What’s going to be with our Nachum’ke?” Nachum’s mother looked out the window to where her son stood in the distance, baskets of produce flanking him on either side. Was this her golden boy, the brilliant child she’d been so proud of? Would he spent his life picking and selling nuts?

He was beautiful, both in terms of his countenance and in his behavior. A genteel child, Nachum was always concerned with kavod habriyos. You could rely on him to be the first to help a friend struggling with his packages or run an errand for an elderly neighbor. He was the one who smiled at everyone on the street, who ran to do any chesed he imagined one might need. Nachum brought light to his parents’ home and joy to their hearts. And he was bright, too.

Blessed with an inquisitive mind, young Nachum had outpaced his peers, his love of learning continuously fueling his efforts. While the other children were on alef, he was on beis. His brain always worked feverishly to absorb and process new information. Nachum’s parents, though simple folk, were ehrliche Yidden who lived according to the dictates of the Torah. As such, the Torah was the well from which he thirsted to drink. But who would teach him, guide him? Who would nurture his budding young mind? Who would gently cradle his soul with words of inspiration, while shaping it with yirah and ahavah? There was no one in town who was able to do the job, so Nachum’s father took the responsibility upon himself. Every day Nachum and his father would walk to the nearby distillery where the spirits that would warm the blood of local peasants was made. The work was hard (and the pay minimal!), but there were moments during the day that Nachum’s father was able to snatch for himself and his son. In those precious snippets of time, they’d learn together. At first, Nachum’s father taught the child to navigate and understand the siddur. After that, they began Chumash. Being a simple laborer, though, Nachum’s father had limited abilities for teaching Torah. He would just have to find a teacher for Nachum. After much searching, Nachum was sent to a town a short journey away from home where he was paired with a fantastic tutor who brought out the best in him. Together they learned, delving into the ins and outs of the Gemara, chazering sections time and again until Nachum knew the holy words by memory. Fathers of the boys in town would point at Nachum as a model of piousness, chastising their children, “Why can’t you be more like Nachum? Do you see the bren with which he learns?” But alas, even good things can come to an end.

Reb Ganker, Nachum’s tutor, had business to attend to outside of town, and away he went. At first, young Nachum tried to learn by himself, but the battle was difficult — for how does one stay motivated when the signature give-and-take of Jewish learning is absent? Slowly a melancholy spirit began to settle over the young Nachum, sapping the geshmak from his learning. Nachum struggled every day to fuel the fire that he knew was in him, but his spark remained a mere kindling. “Tatty,” he cried often over an open Tehillim, “I want to learn! Help me!” The townsfolk noticed the change in Nachum, and though they arranged for other talmidei chachamim to learn with Nachum, his passion had fizzled out. No longer was he the paradigm of the perfect talmid. With heaviness in his heart, Nachum returned home. He would help his sisters pick nuts in the forest and peddle them to passersby. ***** The disappointment Nachum’s mother and father felt knew no bounds. Their hearts were shattered when they saw the shell that had become their son. With love, Nachum’s father encouraged him to at least find a job that would enable him to make a decent living, rather than spend his life selling nuts on the side of the road. Nachum shared with his father that he dreamed of joining a choir because maybe, just maybe the songs of deveikus would help reignite his inspiration, and fuel the fire for learning that he dreamed would once again burn brightly. ***** “Aaaaahhhhaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!” Nachum stared with wide eyes at the chazan in front him. The powerful voice of the traveling chazan was magnificent, rising and falling as an eagle swoops through valleys and soars above clouds.

July 17, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 95 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

I can do that, too, Nachum thought, and opened his mouth to sing. A crystalline voice emerged, ringing clear and youthful. The chazan, startled, stared at him and smiled. Yes, this boy will be perfect, he thought. He had found the newest member of his choir. ***** Nachum traveled with the chazan over the length and breadth of the country, his sweet voice enhancing the choir’s harmony. There was something about the soulful music they made that spoke to him, arousing his longing for connection with his Creator. If he couldn’t learn well, at least he could sing… One day, the choir arrived in the town of Mir, ready to grace it with their lovely voices. Nachum hurried to the renowned yeshiva there, hoping to catch a glimpse of greatness. When he peeked inside he was overwhelmed by a melody sweeter than his beloved chazanus, which was coming from the mouths of hundreds of students. The beis midrash was alive with the buzz of learning! A red-hot warmth spread over his being. Nachum was filled with a righteous jealousy. I want to learn like these bochurim. I want what they have! And with that, the dying embers sparked, and the flame inside him came to life. ***** Reb Menacham Nachum Kaplan (also known as Reb Nachum of Horodno), became a great talmid chacham respected by all in his generation, though he refused many rabbinical positions in his life, preferring to remain a simple gabbai in order to better connect with the townsfolk. Most of his time was dedicated to learning, though several hours of each day were devoted to chesed, with special focus on collecting money for the Torah education of children from poor families. Having personally known the pain of losing one’s passion through lack of educational guidance, Reb Nachum worked to ensure that no child would be left without a teacher. Because no child should be left behind.

Grilling on Cedar Planks

Grilled Veggies

RECIPES, FOOD STYLING AND PHOTOS: MIRIAM PESSY WERCBERGER Grilling is easy. Grilling on wooden planks is easier! Just load up your plank, and the grill does the rest of the work. Here I’ve chosen a main and a side that have the same temp and cooking time for maximum efficiency and convenience. Always remember to presoak the wooden planks for at least an hour before grilling so they won’t burn. Also be sure to check on the food periodically, because certain parts of the grill get hotter and the planks might need rotating.

Country Crazy

Mathematician Fun

In this first game, one passenger says the name of a country, and everyone else tries to try to think of another country’s name that starts with the last letter of the previous country (e.g., Japan–Norway–Yemen–Netherlands–Somalia–Australia…).

The person who is chosen to be “it” keeps his eyes open for any surrounding numbers. He then calls out the number and where the number was taken from. For instance, he might say, “55 – speed limit, 1072 – the address of TGI, 107 – Exit 107…” In the meantime, the rest of the players mentally add up all the numbers announced.

You can always cheat and use the name of a city, town or bungalow colony (hey, isn’t that called a country too?) instead, and feel free to play it with street names (e.g., Francis–Saddle River– Roman–North Cole...).

Mad Libs Select a storyteller. The storyteller prompts the listeners for nouns, verbs, adverbs, etc. (E.g., “Name a person, a person, now a place, another person, an adverb, an action, and a place…”) Hint: The sillier the nouns, the better! The words are then used to fill in/substitute the blanks in the storyteller’s story. You can have Eisav meet President Trump in Egypt where your cleaning lady Maria is thirstily picking flowers at the gas station. I think I want to witness that meeting!

110 / THE MONSEY VIEW

You can play this either as a team or as an individual competition, with one winner at the end. If numbers are slow in coming, increase the action by including some subtraction and multiplication. It’s probably best for the one in charge to keep track of the numbers he is announcing with a pen and paper so he can add it up calmly once the competition subsides.

Hum Dum Dum!

Tropicana on the Go:

In this game, one person hums the tune of a short part/intro of a song, and the rest of the players need to guess which song the first person is singing.

Do you remember the ditty that used to accompany sipping orange juice? Now, take “Tropicana, ropicana, opicana, picana, icana, cana, ana, na, a” to the next level! Find a fun word on any road sign and repeat the pattern. I still remember singing, “Monticello, onticello, nticello, ticello, icello, cello, ello, llo, lo, o” when we traveled up to the mountains! What word will you find?

And here’s another game for those who are fond of hearing themselves sing. Give every person a letter, and have everyone take turns belting out a song that starts with their letter. “L–Layehudim, M–Mach a Bracha, N–Na Nach Nachman…” Have everyone join in and sing their lungs out!

After choosing a word, take turns and time each player. The player who is quickest — and doesn’t get their tongue twisted — wins.

A–Z Look around and find the letters of the alphabet in the order, from A to Z. Be creative! The elusive J may just be on the license plate in front of you, and the V can be found on the Evergreen shopping bag at your feet.

And let’s not forget our loyal oldies but goodies: 20 Questions, I Spy, 1-2-3 Freeze, Made You Laugh and a good, old-fashioned, very boisterous choir!

Good deals and I? We simply don’t get along. Sales don’t speak my language, and free gifts don’t land at my doorstep. But one summer it seemed like I was finally going to experience the thrill of striking a bargain. We were traveling to the mountains, and this time we were determined to work out the cheapest workable way to get our packages to our destination. I vetoed the idea of taking two trips — first one with the packages and then another with the family — even though it was appealing pricewise. A tired and irate husband was not going to work on the busiest day of the year. We then explored a few other options. “Two hundred dollars for a van?” My husband repeated, stunned, after he called the “Heimish and affordable yungerman ready to take your packages to the mountains” from the classifieds. “How about a van large enough for two families’ packages?” I suggested. “We can then divide the cost.” “What about these cars we always see?” my husband asked suddenly, a sparkle in his eyes. “You know, the ones that have

116 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 17, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

boxes and bicycles, and sometimes boats, tied to the roof with ropes?” He flipped over from the classifieds to the picture section and closed the magazine. Search was over. “Yes, but we don’t have a car rack.” I countered. Don’t the suburban, cowboy-types travel like that? Which normal family does that? The idea didn’t sit well with me. “What’s the big deal?” my husband said. “I’m sure it’s the kind of thing that can be improvised 1-2-3. We’ll figure it out.” He was off in an instant, before I had a chance to utter another word. A couple of lessons and $22.99 later, my husband, with four sturdy ropes in hand, was ready for the experience. The day dawned soon enough, and in addition to keeping the kids fed and entertained, I still had to pack up all of our possessions, seal boxes, empty the refrigerators and garbage cans, and leave the house spotless. And my husband — he had one job: mounting the boxes that didn’t fit into the trunk onto the roof. Interestingly enough, his one job kept him a lot busier than the many I was juggling. He reread the instructions and looped the rope through the car a few times. It was tested and tugged. After some prodding, knotting and shlepping, we were finally ready to leave. Soon we were on the highway. The traffic was moving, the kids were munching on their snacks and the baby was dozing in the car seat — the surreal image of a family heading upstate. I raised my eyes Upward to offer thanks to Hashem, when I suddenly heard a loud thud. Boom! Bang! Bang! I turned around in my seat and watched as UFOs dropped from the sky right behind our car. A moment later, I identified the UFOs as our boxes. Like a game of Jenga gone awry, egg boxes were falling from the roof, one after the other. Apparently, the promises in the owner’s manual regarding the rope’s durability and resilience was a very empty one. The boxes got their share of abuse as cars mercilessly rode over them, and so the contents of each box erupted, one after the other. Forced open, they spewed forth all of their contents, which were then dispersed over the expanse of the highway. Colorful items were strewn all over, vulnerable to the wrath of the moving tires of oncoming traffic. Our possessions were doomed. My husband, in an act of hysteria, braked and opened his car door. Paralyized by pan-

ic, I made no move to stop him. Irrationally, we believed that the boxes could still be saved, and a chorus of honking and beeping began as my husband tried salvaging some belongings that had flown to the shoulder of this very busy highway. “Are you nuts?” a passing driver called out to my husband. “Your life is vichtiger!” It took a logical man to help us realize how maniacal our actions were. My husband, however, did manage to fill his arms with some hosiery and bathrobes that had landed on the shoulder, while inside the car, my children were tearfully eulogizing their summer socks and Play Dough. They sat facing the back of the car, and peering into the space between the boxes in the trunk, played a sad game of I Spy. “Hey, that’s my Mickey Mouse cap!” “Isn’t that the fuzzy blanket we got for Chanukah?” “Look to the left! Rifky’s Shabbos robe!” Meanwhile, my why-can’t-it-be-summerall-year daughter was rejoicing when she realized that her summer homework was an active part of the confetti dancing on the highway. The car was charged with emotions as we continued on our way, trying to determine what needed to be re-bought and reordered. It didn’t take a math whiz to figure out that the once-upon-a-time-contents of the boxes added up to an amount significantly more than the $200 a van would have cost. The kids helped by reading off the Sharpie-labeled boxes in the trunk. “Ma, the shoes are all here. Tatty’s shtreimel is here too.” “Um... What does it say on this box? H and BA? Whatever that is, it’s in here.” “Thank you, Hashem! My toys are okay! And M, I, S, C is also okay.” “Baruch Hashem it was only our packages,” my husband and I reiterated time and time again. And then at the end of the (exhausting, endless) day, I remembered something. My diamond pin! It had been pinned onto my black Shabbos sweater, which was packed into a cardboard box, which was placed on the roof of the car, which fell off and tumbled down a cliff. Goodbye diamond pin and goodbye potential bargain. But I was so grateful. Because, really, at the end of the (exhausting, endless) day, what mattered was that the kinderlach, our real diamonds, were safe and sound. And the best monetary deal doesn’t come close to that.

Nobody but the frum traveler truly understands the concept of preparing meal after meal while officially on vacation. And indeed, most road-savvy families I know have an impressive collection of coolers, ice packs, tricks and some nifty gadgets that make hotel room meals so much more doable and delicious. But, of course, space being a scarce commodity when traveling with a family, we can’t take the entire kitchen along. Here I share some gadget ideas that are really worth that space in the car.

122 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 17, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Sandwich Maker This mini appliance is inexpensive and compact, yet has so many more uses than its name implies. One year, when we traveled to Tannersville together with my sister and her family for a three-day getaway, she introduced me to its multi-functionality, and we turned out a completely different breakfast meal each of our three mornings there using this one $10 machine. Firstly, grilled cheese sandwiches make great breakfasts, lunches or, in a pinch, even suppers. There really is nothing like some melted muenster cheese oozing out of perfectly toasted and sealed slices of bread. Serve them with lots of cut-up veggies or any type of salad, or enjoy your veggies, roasted or otherwise, inside the sandwiches. Omelets are another easy breakfast prepared in the sandwich maker — half an egg fills up each “triangle” perfectly, and have the kids enjoy the uniquely shaped puffed-up breakfast (though by the time vacation is up, triangular-shaped food will have lost its novelty). You can even put the cooked eggs between two slices of bread, and place the sandwiches in the machine for another run for delicious fried egg sandwiches. Tuna melts is another version you can try. And it does not end there! French toast, if you’re up for the mess, can also be made in sandwich makers, and pancakes also do very well in this machine. Bring ready pancake batter or pancake mix, and breakfast will be ready in minutes.

Instant Kettle I’ve traveled with bottles of iced cappuccino or coffee in lieu of the morning's warm cup of joe. And I survived. But I’m sure that there are people out there who would not. And even if they are willing to pass up the warm morning brew, their kids might not take kindly to leaving their noodle soups at home. And that’s not it. A warm cup of chocolate milk makes the hotel room so homey. And if traveling long distances, you can have coffee on the go if you have an outlet in the car. You can also boil up some water, pour it into a pan (this is vacation, so turn a blind eye to aluminum concerns), add pasta and a cup of cold water (so cooked pasta shouldn’t be pasty) and seal tightly. After twenty minutes, drain water, and you’ll find that the pasta is ready to season and enjoy. So there you go — you really should take this along. I purchased this kettle on the way to our summer getaway, and it’s been serving up my daily coffee each morning since. It only leaves my counter for Shabbos. Boiled water in literally 90 seconds!

Space-Saving Tip If you are purchasing an appliance especially for your stay, you can order it and have it delivered directly to your hotel. Most hotels will hold packages until you arrive. This will save you space when you are already transporting so much food (especially important when flying to your destination), and on the way home, the new acquisitions can be transported in the empty coolers. Since toiveling might be a concern in locations where there's no keilim mikvah, consult with your halachic authority as to how to go about it. (Credit: DansDeals)

Pizza Maker If you’re thinking, "Oh, don’t talk about the pizza maker again,” I suspect that you don’t yet own one. Because, yes, it really is that awesome! This combination oven/frying pan serves as my milchig cooking station around the year. (And if I invest in one for fleishigs, I can probably forget about washing my stovetop altogether.) This is another item that I purchased before setting out on vacation. After toiveling it, I was told to wait 72 hours before using it. I used it less than 24 hours later and it’s still working after a long while, but don’t hold me accountable if yours doesn’t! Pizza makers come in many versions (with dials or without; with a single surface or double), and you can prepare almost anything in them, except foods that involve cooking liquids. It’s a toaster, a frying pan (for scrambled eggs, sunny-side ups, French toast, patties, pancakes and a whole bunch of other goodies that you should probably not be busy preparing while away), and an oven (warm up frozen waffles, pizza, vegetables, french fries, falafel balls, cheese blintzes or any frozen meal). There are also many other things that can be prepared in a pizza maker, like fish and potatoes, but since they require more work and cleanup, I’d leave these options for when I’m home. Bring one for fleishigs, and enjoy almost anything you’d prepare in a frying pan, grill and oven! Prepared marinated or breaded chicken cutlets or frozen patties, and fry them fresh. Heat up franks, and toast the rolls while you’re at it. Almost any meal can be created in this little machine.

George Foreman This is another useful piece of equipment to take along with you to serve as your fleishig cooking station. Grill marinated cutlets and steaks, franks and burgers, and potatoes. Use this grill as a sandwich press and serve up panini-style pastrami sandwiches or quesadillas stuffed with chicken cutlets, pulled beef, or just anything! And if this is your thing for a fleishig meal, you can even prepare sunny-side-ups, using the drip tray to prop up the bottom plate and keep it straight. Don't forget s'mores for dessert. Place marshmallows and some good-quality pareve chocolate (Schmerling, if you dare!) between graham crackers. Wrap it well in silver foil, and place it into the grill until done to your liking.

Multi Spice Container If you like to spice things up, package spices in 1-oz containers with lids. At least until someone makes this amazing container available with a hechsher — or even better, unfilled.

Hot Dog Warmer Honestly, I’m not sure I’d shlep this along, since franks and buns can be grilled/ toasted either on the George Foreman or in a fleishig pizza maker, and this cute little thing doesn’t really have any other uses, but if you’re being away for just one night, this might work for you!

Crock-Pot This will allow you to enjoy a warm meal as soon as you step in from the day’s excursion. You can prepare soup in a Crock-Pot; slow-boil up water and cook pasta, rice, quinoa or any other grain; and then, of course, there are the regulars: a hearty stew, roasted chicken, steaks, pulled beef, meatballs — in a nutshell, all those things the other mini appliances listed do not produce.

So which to take? Generally, when going away for just a few days, choose one device for milchigs, one for fleishigs, and add on a portable kettle to fill in.

Testimonial

YOU KNOW LIFE? I’ve been there.

And so, as I share with you my seemingly surreal experience, the joy, the awe, my wide-eyed wonder is one of hard-earned wisdom and deep, inner clarity.

My home was my world. My children were my life. Hashem has blessed me with a large family – along with its share of nisyonos. And I’ve learned to accept them – every day again – with love. Mothering has involved a son struggling spiritually, a daughter with severe autism. Oh, how I rode the waves, holding on with devotion, determination. Over time I became worn-out from the scrapes and falls and endless upward climb. I strengthened my emunah; I perfected my parenting. I tried. Then my son turned 13 years old. He was bright, capable, kind-hearted. Our hearts swelled with gratitude as he began learning in his new Yeshivah. A couple of months later, I could barely recognize him. His carefree grin was gone; his jaw was tight with tension. The light in his eyes were dimmed by a dark, hard anger. He couldn’t sit. My son couldn’t focus, didn’t talk. He was running. Always running. Away from us, away from himself, away from a world he could not make sense of. He spent his nights out. Getting up to daven, to Yeshivah each day, was a battle. Running. He wouldn’t meet my eyes. Running. He was doing his own thing, captive in his own chaotic world, in his racing, screaming mind. Running. His symptoms provided the grounds for an ADHD diagnosis. I tried, with great effort, to reach him, to connect. He shrugged, the anger too thick to penetrate. My son was just over 14 years old. His Yeshivah wanted him out. And I was paralyzed by pain. The fear of losing him, his neshama, was so intense, I sometimes found it hard to breathe. Not a second child. I was drowning in a whirlpool of terror and guilt and confusion and dread. Suddenly, I felt like running too. Instead, I discovered Sod Ha’adam - and during the course of weekly lessons, I experienced the

wondrous revival of my heart. It became cleansed of frustration and control, as a deep fountain of pure ahavah burst forth. Guided by incredibly insightful truths, I gently began unwrapping the gift of my soul – layer after layer. So it may heal, so it may thrive, so it may give new life to those dearest to me. For those 24 life-altering weeks, Sod Ha’adam held my hand and opened new worlds, and I worked to integrate new, core concepts. Over time, I shifted to a place of light, of peace, of true acceptance, of deep connection. And in a deeply hidden part of me, I knew I was experiencing truth. Because there was that deadened part of my son’s personality that had suddenly been revived. After two months of intense inner work, my son – unbelievably! – began making proper eye-contact with me. We were able to speak, to verbally connect. It’s one year later now, and BS”D my son has reclaimed the light and peace that were essentially his. I greet him with excitement after each successful day in Yeshivah, and delight in our loving relationship. Interestingly, an old speech impediment of his has disappeared. And his face is aglow like a newborn in his mother’s arms. “I don’t know what you’re doing,” my sweet and spiritually-challenged daughter-in-law told me, “but whatever it is – I want to do it too.” I have come to a place of healing and believing - as I reconnect to the essence of each of my children. I know my heart has been reborn in its ability to accept and connect. Sod Ha’adam has been a process of rebirth – for myself and my children. I am learning to embrace myself and celebrate my uniqueness, to find peace in my being. I’m trying. And oh, the validation, when my husband, a revered Talmid Chochom, said, “A window in Shomayim has been opened for us this year.” Even my severely autistic daughter who cannot speak but would scream all day long, has developed a new, more peaceful demeanor – without new medical intervention. I may have begun this journey to help one child, but I have transformed my home and my life. Because I had sowed at the root.

The highlight of visiting new places is, for most people, the memorable sights and unusual experiences. And when that journey begins right in the hotel, well, then vacationers know they’re off to a great start!

What can be more fun than sharing breakfast with… giraffes? Giraffe Manor is situated on the grounds of a giraffe sanctuary, and with dining room windows just large enough for giraffes to poke their heads into the room, guests expect their long-necked neighbors to join the party every morning. This hotel has very few rooms and very many wannabe guests, so book early — as in one to two years early… Located in Nairobi, Kenya, this is a popular first stop for adventurists on safari.

For guests who’d like to brag about having stayed in a hotel that holds some sort of record, the tallest hotel in the world is, rather unsurprisingly, located in Dubai. Standing at 1,165 feet tall, this proud structure is comprised of two towers, with only the first few levels boasting space in between the two towers.

138 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 17, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Take a look at this hotel in Amsterdam that proudly shows off its country’s style in its Dutch home–inspired design. Here’s to hoping the inside is as fun as the outside.

The magical location of this Arctic resort provides an unforgettable experience for its guests. Located in northern Finland, this hotel offers the option of rooming in igloo-like little cabins with round glass ceilings (or chalets with an igloo-like room, as pictured), which provide incredible views of the Northern Lights.

It seems like Northern Europe likes extraordinary rooms in thrilling locations. This Swedish hotel is really cool for someone who isn’t afraid of heights. Or falling out of trees. From square rooms, with the exterior mirrored so it’s nearly invisible, to round rooms covered almost entirely by branches on the outside (some peepholes are hiding underneath), it’s hard to decide which of their many treehouses to choose for a stay.

If you’re the type who likes the idea of heights, but would rather not experience it for yourself, a room at JFK’s brand-new TWA Hotel might be the perfect place for you to stay. Their guest rooms provide fantastic views of aircraft taking off and landing, and at 4.5 inches thick, these tremendous soundproof windows were built to keep the noise out. Of course, most guests at the TWA Hotel are businessmen who can hop on a plane to New York, attend meetings or events in the hotel’s lounges or grand ballrooms, and then fly back to wherever they came from — without even leaving the airport.

While there are hotels rooms located in upcycled trains, lighthouses or even cranes, this renovated 727 is different in that the interior of the airplane was designed to recreate a typical hotel experience. The walls, covered in quaint-looking wooden panels that match the furniture, are lined with the usual airplane windows, but the views are spectacular since the aircraft was grounded level with the trees.

The Maldives, an archipelago located in the Arabian Sea, is a tropical country and the perfect place for the undersea hotel it’s famous for. What can be more peaceful than dining in what feels like a luxury fish tank — only it’s the people inside?
