It’s an art I’d long since hoped to master, and it was broken down in simple steps that really made it sound doable. And if the results will be half as beautiful as the featured masterpiece, I’ll consider myself blessed. Before I invest in molds, I would like to know where they can be purchased and if there’s a specific company you recommend.

Disposable foil molds can also be used, but since they are more flimsy, the results will be less even.

would love to attain but are sorely lacking in (myself included).

Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction, and although the story wasn’t mine, at certain stages, it could’ve been mine, with my unique twists.

Please don’t be judgmental. Although it is very important for people like me to get to Shabbos peacefully, it is a struggle each week anew. It’s an extremely humbling and often humiliating experience, and despite my best intentions and efforts, it seems that it’s not bashert for me to seamlessly slip into Shabbos with the serenity that I so yearn for.

On top of the nature of people like the writer and myself, if their offspring take after them, they make for a rambunctious, cheerful bunch that manage to hinder the mother’s best efforts to get to Shabbos calmly. In fact, sometimes the best option is to have them under Tatty’s cheerful care — out of the house!

Enjoy your organized nature, value it and cherish it. Thank Hashem that you are so organized that you can’t even relate to this struggling mother.

And I will work on accepting my shortcomings and value my strong points. Although my nature can be challenging when it comes to reaching the finish line, it makes me a flexible, attentive and giving person. Baruch Hashem, once Shabbos does arrive, the atmosphere in our home is warm, happy and peaceful.

(Re: In and Around Ramapo, Issue 179) The Torah community is looking for ways to prevent the proposed law of our mosdos being forced to teach seven hours of subjects approved by the Board of Ed to be compatible with the public schools.

At the same time, our public schools are filled with Yiddishe kinderlach whom our heimishe mosdos say can’t service them.

Perhaps we need to care and change the tide.

I have heard from Rabbi Zecharia Wallerstein that we have to take care of Hashem’s children. Mr. and Mrs. Kiszner have been doing just that. They have opened their hearts to fill a void Monsey desperately needed. May their school, Gesher HaChaim, serve as a tikkun, and may the gezeirah be abolished.

This past Motzei Shabbos, the parents and staff at Gesher Academy came together to celebrate the many milestones that the children have reached and to explore options on how to move to the next level. One parent

mentioned that his son was in public school until this year and had no interest in anything pertaining to Yiddishkeit. Now he is learning Mishnayos.

Perhaps each of us need to look into ourselves and say, “How can I bring Hashem’s children closer to Him?” Thanks to our son’s devoted melamdim and teachers, our son has grown significantly in the short time he has been at Gesher Academy. He loves going to cheder, and his cheerful face and upbeat attitude toward learning are amazing.

IN THIS WEEK’S PARSHA, we learn a valuable lesson about making a kiddush Hashem from a very surprising source: frogs. The Kli Yakar explains that during the makkah of tzfardeya, Hashem commanded the frogs to enter the ovens of the Mitzriyim. Yet we see that when Moshe davened for the makkah to stop, it says, “And Hashem did according to Moshe’s word, and the frogs died from the houses, from the courtyards, and from the fields” (Shemos 8:9). The Kli Yakar notes that only the frogs that had entered the ovens survived. Many frogs had not wanted to enter the ovens, choosing instead safer places, like the bedrooms. When it came time for the frogs to die after the makkah was over, the ones in the ovens were spared. The Kli Yakar explains that it was in the merit of their desire to make a kiddush Hashem that Hashem spared them.

The Kli Yakar also explains that Chananya, Mishael and Azarya learned a kal v’chomer from the frogs, choosing to be thrown into a fiery furnace rather than bow down to an idol. What is the background of this beautiful and inspiring story? After the Churban Beis Hamkidash, Nevuchadnezzar, ym”sh, gathered together the intellectual elite from among the Jewish people and sent them to Bavel. Among them were the young princes from Shevet Yehudah: Daniel, Chananya, Mishael and Azarya.

The boys were taken to live in the palace to be raised as nobility, and a servant was assigned to oversee their feeding. The king allotted some of his own royal food for the boys, but Daniel, just fifteen years of age, refused to defile himself with non-kosher food. He bravely asked the servant to feed them only seeds. The servant feared that if the youths did not grow well, then the king would blame him, so Daniel made a deal with him: Feed us as we ask for ten days, and then see how we look. At the end of ten days, they had grown fatter and more handsome than the other youths who were being fed the royal delicacies. This tremendous mesiras nefesh brought great bracha to Daniel,

Chananya, Mishael and Azarya. As a result of their eating kosher in Nevuchadnezzar’s palace, Hashem blessed them with knowledge and understanding. Daniel was given an extra gift because he had been the one to stand up for kashrus: He could interpret dreams.

Later, Chananya, Mishael and Azarya would be the ones to stand up and shine on their own.

It happened when Daniel was away to Alexandria that Nevuchadnezzar set up an idol and demanded that all present, when commanded, should fall down and bow before the idol. Whoever would not bow down would be thrown into the fiery furnace that had been prepared. The command was given, all of the people fell down and bowed down — except for Chananya, Mishael and Azarya. They reasoned that if the frogs in Mitzrayim could jump into an oven when they did not have a chiyuv to die al kiddush Hashem, kal v’chomer, all the more so they themselves should be willing to enter an oven to die al kiddush Hashem. However, the frogs were saved because of their willingness to sacrifice their lives — and so were Chananya, Mishael and Azarya. Choosing to make the ultimate sacrifice of their very lives is precisely what saved their lives.

Likewise, when it came time to leave Mitzrayim, only a small portion of the Bnei Yisroel made the choice to leave Mitzrayim. According to Rashi and the Mechilta, only one in five left Mitzrayim.

The remaining 80 percent of our people perished in makkas choshech. Making the choice to leave the only life they had ever known to serve Hashem in the midbar was the very act that saved them.

When Hashem gives us the opportunity to make a kiddush Hashem, it is a privilege and a gift, just as the bechirah with which we might choose whether or not to make a kiddush Hashem is a privilege and a gift. We should never be afraid to stand up and make a kiddush Hashem. No harm can come to us for doing so — indeed, our very willingness to sacrifice ourselves may be just the way to save ourselves.

Dynamite Ending for the TZB Part of the original Tappan Zee Bridge structure will be going out with a big bang sometime this month.

Explosives will be used to demolish certain parts of the original bridge, which has been replaced by the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the Federal Highway Administration confirmed, as reported by The Journal News. No official date or timeline has been given yet for the work, which will be done “in the safest way possible,” according to an FHA spokesperson.

Explosives will be detonated above the surface of the water, creating intense heat that will cut through the structure’s steel supports.

“It’s as though someone were there with a cutting torch, but the charge takes the place of putting people in harm’s way,” explained John Lipscomb of Riverkeeper, an agency that protects the Hudson River and its tributaries. “That will cut the legs out from under the span.”

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC), which headed up the bridge project, said that explosives will be used on the eastern end of the span. Demolition of the original Tappan Zee Bridge was halted in September after a pin joint popped on the structure.

“Through extensive engineering analysis, it has been determined that this is the safest method to proceed with lowering the span given its current state,” said TZC spokesperson Laura Ware. “TZC has worked with local, state and federal agencies to review the controlled demolition plans and subsequent operations to remove the steel from the Hudson River. Throughout the planning and execution of this operation, the safety of our workers and the traveling public is our top priority.”

Water Damage Causing Falling Cabinets and Deep Pools of Standing Water Has Wesley Hills Woman Suing Town, County Fed up with regular flooding that has portions of her property submerged and her entire house off kilter, a Wesley Hills woman is suing Rockland County and the Town of Ramapo.

Lime Kiln Road resident Tova Medetsky bought her home in 2002, shortly after a cell phone tower had been erected nearby, reported The Journal News. Within five years, puddles began appearing in front of her home, intensifying after storms to depths of nearly 12 inches. Mrs. Medetsky said that the problem is caused by cables from the cell tower that position a drainage culvert and basin too high to effectively divert storm runoff.

Both the town and the county have attempted to remedy the problem over the past ten years but to no avail, according to Mrs. Medetsky. Officials from three

different municipalities have been blaming each other for the water that often has the Medetskys parking on their front lawn because of standing water.

“None of them wants to accept responsibility,” said Mrs. Medetsky. “They chose to keep the cell tower at the expense of my property.”

Engineers have told the Medetskys that there is approximately three feet of water under the foundation of their home, causing the five-bedroom house to shift.

The entire kitchen is slanted, preventing drawers from closing and cabinets to fall off the walls. She estimates that it may cause over $1 million to fix the problem.

“Sometimes I just stand outside the property… and cry,” said Mrs. Medetsky. “I get so overwhelmed. This happens once a month. The water just sits there, even days after.”

Pancakes with Strawberry Cream

Using whole-grain flour and serving it with Greek yogurt turns pancakes into a wholesome meal.

Add a hearty vegetable soup for a filling and nutritious supper that’ll bring the kids to the table fast.

PANCAKES 3 eggs ¼ cup oil (for pareve version, use ⅓ cup)

1½ cups milk (can be replaced with a milk alternative or juice for pareve) 2 cups flour

¼ cup sugar

4 tsp. baking powder

STRAWBERRY CREAM 16 oz. plain Greek yogurt 6 oz. frozen strawberries, slightly thawed Sweetener of choice: stevia, sugar or sugar substitute

PANCAKES DIRECTIONS 1. Beat eggs. Add oil, sugar and milk. Beat again.

2. Mix flour and baking powder. Add to mixture and mix until combined. May remain lumpy.

3. Heat griddle/frying pan on high. Grease very lightly (or even not at all). Drop large spoonfuls of batter onto griddle. Flip as soon as bubbles appear on surface. Cook for no more than 1 minute longer. Transfer to plate.

4. Serve with strawberry cream or applesauce.

STRAWBERRY CREAM DIRECTIONS 1. Blend yogurt with strawberries using a hand blender.

Sweeten to taste.

2. For a pareve version, blend 6 ounces frozen strawberries with 1½ cups soy milk and 1 package instant vanilla pudding.

If sweating over a waffle iron is not your thing, I spotted the perfect shortcut for you in the grocery’s freezer: ready-made wholewheat waffles. Just whip up the “ice cream” and sauce, and enjoy!

WAFFLE INGREDIENTS 4 eggs

1 cup flour

2 cups milk (low fat works well)

1½ cups white whole-wheat flour

¼ cup sugar

1 T. baking powder

5 T. melted butter or oil

Pinch of salt

“ICE CREAM” INGREDIENTS 1 16 oz. container whipped cottage cheese 3 cups milk 1 package (Osem) instant vanilla pudding ¼ cup sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract

MANGO-PEACH SAUCE INGREDIENTS 16 oz. frozen mango chunks (or 1½ fresh mango) 12 oz. frozen peach slices (or 3 large peaches)

WAFFLE DIRECTIONS 1. Blend all ingredients well until light and bubbly. Cook according to your waffle maker’s instructions.

Yields about 6 waffles

“ICE CREAM” DIRECTIONS 1. Pour all ingredients into a 2-quart container and blend using a hand blender.

2. Place in freezer, and blend again after several hours.

3. Continue freezing until semi-soft, mixing every so often. Freezing takes about 12 hours.

4. To rush up the process, freeze in a large, flat container, blending/mixing occasionally. If mixture freezes solid, thaw slightly before serving.

Note: Blending throughout freezing/before serving breaks up large ice crystals, and makes the “cream” smoother and softer. This is true for all types of ice creams and sherbets.

The last few nights, Yoel had been having trouble falling asleep. He tried to close his eyes and lapse into dreamland, but in his mind, colorful lights kept blinking and lively songs kept playing as he thought about the upcoming hachnasas Sefer Torah. His father was one of the gabba’im, so he had been hearing all about the preparations for the big event.

Even now, he heard the phone ring and Tatty picking up. It was probably about the hachnasas Sefer Torah.

Yoel lay awake, thinking about the pekalach — the bags of treats that all the kids would get, and that he, Yoel, was in charge of packing! Soon, the nosh that his father had ordered would arrive, and he would ask a few classmates to help him pack the items into bags.

But wait. He heard his father mention his

Hope. After Yoel heard the next few sentences, he understood that Tatty’s eyes were conveying his hope that Yoel, with his heart of gold and sterling middos, would understand and give his consent.

“The askan who called last night is trying

to ease their moving pains and help the children find their places in appropriate schools, especially the youngest, who is about your age.” His cell phone rang, but he ignored it — a clear sign that this was a really important conversation.

“The boy, Michoel, is having an especially hard time, and R’ Yerachmiel the askan thinks that a significant role in the preparations for the hachnasas Sefer Torah could give him a real boost and help him fit in.”

Yoel needed no more explanation. The bits and pieces he’d heard from last night’s phone call all fit together. The pekalach. His father wanted to transfer his job to the new boy — But wait. Tatty wasn’t saying that he had to be mevater. He was saying that the final decision was Yoel’s. Answer The heter to speak lashon hara in order to relieve one’s pain is not an “across-the-board permit.” It depends on the details of the incident, the extent of the pain, the intention of the speaker and more. Above all, one must consider whether this is the only way to deal with the suffering.

In the case described in the question, the questioner should look inward and think — what was the real reason that the previous friend deserted her? It’s very common among young girls that a friend who “deserts” another is feeling hurt for some reason, and therefore decides to drop the friendship for a while so as to show her friend how pained she is and to get her to apologize. But the questioner above, instead of getting the hint, possibly decided to teach her friend a lesson and choose a new friend. So now her old friend is tormenting her. If this is the case, then speaking to the new friend is no solution; it will just lead to lashon hara, revenge, grudge-holding and more. Therefore, there is no heter to tell the new friend about the previous one’s barbs.

If the questioner finds it hard to do this kind of soul-searching alone, she should consult with a different girl who is familiar with the story, or with a teacher, etc., and together they can find a way to conciliate the first friend and restore peace, be”H.

THROUGH A LENS OF ZECHUS Pitiful Pants When Tanta Blumie called, it sounded rather nice. She had winter clothes in excellent condition that were small on her Pinny and should be just right for me. She’d packed them into a bag and I was welcome to pick them up.

“You called just in time,” my mother said. “I was planning to go shopping with Shlomie tomorrow for two pairs of pants and a winter shirt. Also, I think that his Shabbos sweater is too small on him!”

The next day, I went by bus from cheder directly to the remote neighborhood where Tanta Blumie lived. I came home, plunked the huge bag down on the dining room table, and opened it, expecting to pull out clothes that were my size and looked like new…

What a disappointment!

Pants with holes in the knees; faded, stained shirts; a sweater starting to unravel at the sleeve...

Is that what Tanta Blumie expected me to wear this winter? Would she send Pinny to cheder in such clothes? For this I had to travel across town, instead of going shopping with Ima? The heated words were about to escape my mouth, but a glance at Mommy revealed that she, too, was disappointed by the contents of the bag, yet she did not say a negative word. That helped me restrain myself, too.

Then the phone rang. Tanta Blumie apologized profusely. She hadn’t been home when I’d come, and her kids had mistakenly given me the bag that was on the way to the garbage bin, instead of the one full of beautiful clothes. Now she was sending Pinny by bus to bring us the right bag…

If you’re like many of us who are blessed with a crew of young ones, the day-to-day can seem like a never-ending series of chores to be checked off our lists. It can even be easy to lose sight of the reason that we actually do all the little things we do to care for our children — which is, of course, because we love them and have a responsibility to help them grow into healthy, capable, ehrliche Yidden. Though the myriad of “kleinekeiten” that we’re always busy with may not be difficult tasks on their own, everything adds up. Multiply each task by the number of people under your care, add in the potential lack of sleep or energy and possible medical issues (or even simple burnout), divide attention into fragments... and then calculate. The sum total can be quite overwhelming indeed.

So what do you do when you feel completely tossed about by the waves of life, watching everyone around you swim gracefully as you struggle to keep one nostril above surface, grasping for but one more gulp of life-giving air?

The first thing to do is recognize you are not alone.

The overwhelmed parent is hardly an anomaly; we exist all around you (but we’ll rarely admit that!). In fact, when polling mothers about what helps them manage during these hectic “yinga yuhren,” I was bombarded with phrases like, “Finally! Someone writing an article about the challenges of raising young children!” or “I’m one of those barely floating…”

Though rewarding, being a parent is not always

work well. Going to sleep early, eating healthfully, and making “me time” a part of your weekly (or daily!) schedule can do wonders. Also important but not often mentioned is being able to see when a stressinducing situation is about to turn into a blow-up.

It’s precisely at that time that you must disengage, or at the very minimum, freeze. Those who work with the special needs population are taught an invaluable lesson that applies equally to parenting: If you’ve tried everything to defuse a situation and it’s just not working, it’s time to call for backup. As soon as someone else arrives, step out and let them handle it. Then you go calm down. But… What if there is no backup?

For some parents, help is not just a phone call away.

And that can lead to abnormal levels of stress, which can wreak havoc on our health.

Elizabeth Blackburn, a Tasmanian scientist and Nobel Prize laureate, has spent many years studying chromosomes, specifically the very ends of them, called the telomeres. Chromosomes are strands of DNA, which contain the “coding” information of the human body. They are found in the center of every cell, and are responsible for everything from hair color to the sound of one’s voice to their height potential. At the ends of every chromosome are caps of DNA called telomeres. The job of telomeres is to provide protection for the strands of genetic information, similar to how the plastic tip on a shoelace prevents the lace from unraveling. But as the cells divide and reproduce, as cells are wont to do, the new telomeres become increasingly smaller, thereby providing less protection for the chromosomes they are protecting. Over time, as the telomeres become too short, cells die. That manifests in the body as aging. Skin cells die, hair pigment cells die, people feel less youthful… But the good news is that there’s an enzyme that comes to the rescue, called telomerase, which our bodies produce, that helps us maintain the length and function of our telomeres.

So, what does that have to do with stress… and parenting?

The answer is, everything.

Elissa Epel, a psychologist who studies the impact of chronic stress, approached scientist Elizabeth Blackburn with a pressing question: What happens to the telomeres of people who are under the stress load of caring for a child with chronic illness, with little or no outside help? Together they wondered: Does the worn-down look of many such caregivers correlate to the length of the their telomeres? Blackburn and Epel set out to answer those questions, and the results were startling. From the accumulated data it was clear that the decline in caregiver telomeres over

And while others have provided fantastic hacks for making tasks a bit less tedious, better organizing our homes, and ways to etch out time for physical self-care — all of which are helpful and important — there’s another aspect that should be addressed: internal self-care.

We all know the story of the woman who found a single egg during a famine, and though her beautiful children were wasting away, she locked herself into a room and consumed the egg — alone. When the children on the other side of the door banged, asking her what she was doing, she replied, “I’m making for you a mommy.” This mother knew that, sadly, one egg would not be enough to revive her household when divided amongst them, but that that one egg would enable her to provide them more love and care, and hopefully give them the morale to pull through just a bit longer.

Everyone has an “egg”; something that makes them more capable of being a better parent. In fact, many of us might even have a carton full of eggs! But no matter your life situation or individual needs, there is one egg we all share: the need to de-stress.

The Tale of the Telomeres If you’ll look at your life under a microscope, you’ll find that you can divide stress into two categories: the normal, hum-drum, run-of-the-mill stresses of getting supper on the table, clean clothes on the kids, and so on; and the out-of-the-norm stressors, the things that the most other people don’t have have to deal with on a daily basis.

LOVE Your Birth Experience time was directly related to the years they’d been caregiving and was not in direct correlation to age. Simply put, caregivers with chronic stress were literally going through the aging process earlier than peers who didn’t live with chronic stress!

There was one factor, though, that caused some of the caregivers studied to have significantly less-shortened telomeres, and that was attitude. Those who perceived life to be an overwhelmingly painful tragedy had the most worndown telomeres and least production of telomerase. Those who who viewed their situation as a challenge, however, and had a can-do attitude, had much better functioning telomeres and telomerase. Why was that?

The hypothesis proposed by Blackburn and Epel is that the function of telomerase is decreased when there is an ongoing exposure to the hormone cortisol. Cortisol is the hormone that spikes in response to stress, and it has been clearly linked to the breakdown of the body when it is subjected to significantly elevated or prolonged exposure to this hormone. (Hence the reason steroid creams, made from synthetic cortisol, can be severely damaging when used incorrectly.) In plain English, those caregivers who constantly felt stressed-out had chronically high levels of cortisol, which reduced the function of their superhero enzyme telomerase, which, in turn, hastened the death of cells and activated the aging process.

Calm.

Caring.

Confident.

Cultivating an empowered labor and birth experience.

While modern science is understandably excited with the discovery of telomere behavior, hoping to gain further understanding in order to extend human lifespan and lower disease-span, the Torah, as we well know, has shared this (and every) secret with man for thousands of years already.

The heiliger Rashi relates that when Pinchas ben Elazar, in his zealousness, dispatched of Zimri and Cozbi, his contemporaries taunted him, calling him “the son of Puti, whose mother’s father fattened calves for idols.” And then, once he was already insulted in regard to his lineage, they further tormented him by mentioning the rank of Zimri ben Salu, calling Pinchas the one “who killed a Nasi of a shevet Yisroel.”

For the majority of people, this situation would be stressful indeed, causing internal distress and turmoil. Is it any wonder, then, that immediately after Rashi tells us of the torment Pinchas suffered, Hashem says that he is giving Pinchas “brisi shalom” — his “covenant of peace”? The “brisi shalom,” according to some interpretations of the pasuk, was the gift of internal peace, because there is no greater blessing than to be free of conflicting, confusing emotions.

Despite the hecklings of the people of his time, Pinchas remained unstressed.

Fascinatingly, the Sforno writes that the “brisi shalom” was peace “mimalach hamaves.” According to some interpretations, it was precisely because Pinchas was blessed with peace — internal peace, free from the stress others intended

to impose upon him — that the malach hamaves was unable to touch him, and he lived an unbelievably long life. As Harav Moshe Meir Weiss wrote in a recent article, “...it is the lack of internal peace that causes much of the deterioration and breakdown of the human body.”

Both Torah and science acknowledge that stress is terrible, especially when chronic. So how do we tame those telomeres, up that telomerase and simply de-stress?

CHANGE YOUR BRAIN Ideally, we’d all be the glass-half-full types, but let’s face it: Many of us aren’t. (Guilty as charged!) But we can change that. We can literally rewire our brains to find satisfaction in challenges — and not only in positive outcomes.

According to Shawn Achor, a psychologist and researcher of positive psychology, our generation has wrongly chased away happiness and inner calm by creating a situation in which happiness is only the result of success.

In order to be happy, we have to score good grades, earn enough money, dress our kids the best. But such a life sets us up for consistent unhappiness, because as each success is reached, the bar is raised for a new level of success, making happiness forever elusive. We’ve taken satisfaction out of the act of living, happiness out of the daily doing, convincing ourselves it only comes as the reward for having accomplished a goal. We’ve created a vacuum where happiness belongs, and that allows stress to move into that empty space.

But our brains were designed to actually work in the opposite manner! When happy, the chemical dopamine floods our systems, creating not only a feel-good sensation, but also activating the learning centers in the brain, causing us to be able to better adapt to whatever situation is at hand. We achieve drastically more when we’re positive than when we’re negative, neutral or stressed. (And the people around us surely feel better too!)

When we were in school, the smart kid was the one who didn’t have to worry about tests and homework. She was prepared and knew all the answers or at least where to find them.

When raising a family, we are not dealing with biology, trigonometry, language and dinim. At least, not in the same way. Rather, we are dealing with breaks and sprains of different parts of the anatomy, how to balance the budget, how to speak to our children so that we are heard, and what to do with the macaroni and cheese that was scooped out with a fleishig serving spoon. Thus, everyday life puts us to the test — but often without preparation. Here are some strategies that can help you meet the challenges and manage to come out with good marks.

IDENTIFY THE TRIGGER Whatever your situation, identify the trigger. Give it a name — is it the unexpectedness of each day that keeps you awake at night? The loads of laundry threatening to create an avalanche in your home? The dirty dishes taking up residence in your sink, with nary a clean plate to be found? Maybe it’s the errands — cleaners, supermarket, library, giftbuying, etc. — that cause you to invent creative reasons to avoid them.

How do you pinpoint your trigger? Be aware of your physical response to a given task. Do your innards feel like they are being gripped in a vise? When do your nerves tend to prickle?

This is how Gitty pinpointed her trigger. After tuning in to her physical responses, she found that it was not the baby that kept her up at night, but the myriad details of her son Shlomo’s upcoming bar mitzvah that were dancing a hora in her brain, not allowing her to sleep. Each morning, she would just begin gearing up for the day, and already she would stall. Her trigger was THE BAR MITZVAH. Her next step was to narrow her findings down further. After enumerating all of the arrangements that needed to be dealt with, Gitty noticed that the strongest physical reaction occurred when she thought about the kiddush. She was okay deciding on a caterer for the meal, and choosing which hall to rent for the evening was not a threat, but when she thought about the kiddush at shul, her mind froze and her heart did flip-flops. Now the trigger was recast as THE KIDDUSH. Breaking down the elements of the kiddush, she realized that her greatest fear was not knowing how many people to prepare for. The trigger now morphed into HOW MANY PEOPLE TO EXPECT. This was now whittled down to a workable project. How to get this information?

A few phone calls to her friends who were post–bar mitzvah kiddushim got her the details she needed, and she could once again sleep.

GET IT DOWN ON PAPER When negotiating a contract or a quote, it is always wise to get the numbers in writing. Same with negotiating your daily schedule. Even if you are known for your memory, don’t rely on it. Seeing things black on white, on paper or on a screen, creates a definitive timeline for the events of the day. Noting a dentist appointment in town scheduled for 10 a.m. will clearly indicate you can’t be at home for the gas technician at 10:30. If your weekly calendar is filled morning, noon and night, then that means that it isn’t wise to invite company for a relaxing get-together.

Devora does not live in the same state as her parents. Once a year, her parents visit at her home for a week’s time of bonding and creating memories. They devise a complete schedule of trips, get-togethers and fun activities to do with the grandchildren. Since September, Devora knew that they were coming the last week of January.

Months ago, Devora’s best friend asked if Devora could put up some guests the week of her daughter’s wedding.

“You can count on me!” she answered emphatically. She knew that the aufruf was Parshas Mishpatim. Not having written in either occasion in her calendar, she didn’t realize until the week before that the two events collided with one another. For the calendar to be effective, every appointment, meeting and event must appear in its proper space to ensure no double-bookings or embarrassing situations.

CALL IN THE TROOPS There are moments when it is the sheer volume of tasks that leads us to despair. The day does not stretch to cover all that needs to be done. When that’s the case, call in the troops. Whether it is a younger sibling, a neighbor’s daughter or paid help, arrange to have assistance at the time you are most inundated. Is it laundry, bedtime or bathtime? Before Shabbos? If you are overwhelmed, reach out for help. An overwrought person is not the prime candidate to win the Mother of the Year award.

Elisheva was working full time and had recently had her sixth child. The oldest was nine years old. The new baby was colicky and cried incessantly. Until recently, Elisheva felt that things were under control, but lately she dreaded the bathtime routine. It seemed that the baby was always crying in the background when she was involved with the other children.

Bathtime highlighted her inability to be in two places simultaneously. The neighbor’s teenage daughter was the youngest in her family and loved babies. Elisheva asked her neighbor if her daughter could help out during bathtime and the teenager was only too happy to hold the baby. It was a win-win situation.

RECALCULATE A young mother with one little baby has more time to devote to cooking, cleaning, shopping and laundry than a mother of six. If the budget doesn’t allow for more paid help, then try to review your expectations and see if they are realistic. Find areas where you can let up on your standards and still be okay with it. If the windows don’t get cleaned so often, or your fridge isn’t sparkling all the time, will it disturb your equilibrium?

Yehudis prided herself on keeping her house clean and tidy despite four active children under the age of six. She definitely experienced a feeling of satisfaction living in neat surroundings, but it came at a price: She was always tense when the children sat down to play, dreading the cleanup at the end of the evening. Cleanup in her house meant placing each toy in its designated container, lining them up neatly, and she loved when all was in place.

However, one day she calculated the amount of stress she was creating with her high standards and decided that reducing the tension was far more important than having each toy in its proper place.

GET EVERYONE ON BOARD As the nurturing adult in the family, we assume the role of responsibility. We are responsible to see that the house is neat, clean clothes are available, food is on hand, homework done, etc.

Nevertheless, it need not be a solo performance.

In fact, it is a great educational opportunity to teach your family to work as a team and be concerned about the other players.

Several years ago Naomi’s family had their hearts set on traveling during the children’s Pesach vacation. The only week that would work out was the last week before Pesach.

She and her husband both worked, and although she had some household help, getting ready for yom tov a week sooner was too much for one person.

Naomi created a roster delineating all the tasks with each person assigned daily chores appropriate to their age and skills. If all would be done before the last week, the trip would take place — and if not, the trip would be shelved. With the common goal, everyone did their best and were even willing to lend a helping hand to their siblings. The house was soon ready for Pesach, and they had a marvelous trip.

Ultimately, perhaps the most important thing a mother can do is be cognizant that she must do her hishtadlus, and that the outcome is not in her hands. Life-smarts is an art, and practice makes perfect — but perfection does not.

But in the daily grind of real life, the scene is not always pictureperfect. This week, we pull back the curtain on mothers who fall short of their deepest aspirations, and parenting expert Dr. Sora Yaroslawitz, DSc, OTR/L, advises them how to progress toward their goals.

A Note from the Expert: Impressions of motherhood should not be based on fantasy. Although hot chocolate, bubble baths and strolls under the warm sun are all wonderful components of motherhood, they do not exclusively define motherhood. I’ve seen too many instances of reduced parent-self-esteem because mothers are not able (nor should they be able) to mimic the fantasy home described in magazines and literature or spoken about in parenting classes. Parenting guilt should be reserved for when you made a parenting mistake that disrupts your child’s normal development. It should not be associated with your inability to create a whimsical, museum-like atmosphere for your children that is the product of someone’s fantasy.

STRAIGHT TO BED The Vision Delicious-smelling wet curls rest on my shoulder as I carry my little one to bed. Hair combed through, nails trimmed, faces scrubbed squeaky clean. Ah, nothing like the magic of a bath to properly prepare a child for a restful night of sleep.

Supper was over too late. The kids are crying and tired, and I am downright exhausted. They didn’t do anything dirty today, I rationalize. I really think we can skip the bath. But they already skipped one yesterday. Um, and the day before, too. But tomorrow.

TOO TASKED The Vision

My 10th-grader bounds down the steps. She’s straightened up her room and completed a few duties around the house, responsible girl that she is, and now it’s time for her to enjoy herself. I happily see her off to her friend’s house where she’ll spend a few hours having a grand teen time.

Tomorrow, maybe it’ll be our turn, and I’ll welcome her friends here, providing them with the space to socialize, and of course, with treats and smiles. She has a few responsibilities around the house, yes, but she also has time for herself. After all, a kid is only young once!

A Tip from the Expert: Stagger, stagger, stagger! Avoid trying to put children to bed at the same time. Children need your undivided attention, at least for a few minutes, to provide closure to their day.

Allow children to play in a central location (playroom, dining/living room, kitchen) and put one child to bed a time.

Pay close attention to what your child tells you during bedtime so that he feels heard. After children have received a few moments alone with you, they will likely settle more easily. If they do not, you can always implement the Hands Full behavior management techniques for bedtime — guilt-free!

Everyone is vying for my attention, and everyone wants it now! My daughter pops out of bed on some pretense, another needs her hair shampooed and “a towel right afterward!” One woebegone little fellow, his faced pinched in a suddenly discovered hunger, wants his untouched supper plate back from the garbage can.

I run around, playing “bop the frog,” finally settling one child, only to have another pop up. I count till three. I count till ten. I give “only one more drink.” I turn on a story tape and then turn it off (“It’s not letting me sleeeep!”).

I need five things from the grocery. Would you be able to go?” Shany this, Shany that. Shany babysits.

Shany washes the dishes. And Shany folds the laundry with her magical touch. What a terrible mother I am, I berate myself when I actually have a moment to think. She’ll im yirtzeh Hashem have her own family to tend to. Am I depriving my daughter of her youth, tagging on too many responsibilities on her slim shoulders?

Although it is critical that your teenage daughter a) obey you when you make a request of her and b) help out when the situation calls for it, bear in mind that these are your daughter’s precious years to grow and develop the academic, social and age-appropriate developmental skills that are available at school and with her friends. Remember that your daughters’ great-grandmothers were more available to help their mothers because they did not attend school and were not exposed to the school routine of today’s girls.

If you find that you are overwhelmed by the tasks that are required of you to the point that you are relying too heavily on your daughter, it’s time to take in some extra household help. A few hours of outside help each week will go a long way toward establishing a healthier balance between household responsibilities and parenting.

“I have something exciting to tell you, Libby,” my husband says while I duck my head into the washing machine to retrieve the next load of linen.

Call it intuition, call it knowing that your husband never does introductions, or call it detecting the weird pitch he’s using, but I just know that what he’s going to tell me will not be my definition of exciting.

He clears his throat. Then, in a hurry, as if he doesn’t say it fast enough the enthusiasm will be lost, he says, “Mymotherisintownandshe’sthinkingofcomingforlunch.”

No reaction from my end is forthcoming. Is he for real?

“So,” he says, exhaling with relief, “exciting, huh?”

My mind is already past thinking if it is or isn’t exciting. I’m busy surveying my house, and for good reason, I panic. “When is she coming?”

“Dunno. I’d assume about 45 minutes to an hour.”

Thanks to my dear mother-in-law herself, my dining room resembles what I imagine a tapestry sale looks like in Istanbul. Freshly washed duvets, bed covers and sheets are strung across the entire room as if on display. Because to preserve the silky feel of the sateen, my mother-in-law never, ever, ever puts bed linens in the dryer, and she made sure to advise her progeny to do the same.

Obliging daughter-in-law that I am, every linen-washing day I am in a dreamland of canopies, tents and teepees, as for lack of hanging space, my couches, chairs and doors all have linens draped over them.

With the impromptu visit on the horizon, I frantically collect all of it, crumple it into a colossal ball and stuff it into… the dryer. But don’t worry, I don’t turn on the machine.

I then start thinking of what I’ll be serving. My mother-in-law is a balabusta par excellence, and we always joke that her freezer refills on its own. Like a vending machine that never empties, there are always sheets of kokosh cake and brownie

at our disposal — even two weeks before Pesach! Understandably, I’d like to make a statement and prove that I have a bit of Martha Stewart in my genes too. To my good fortune, the cleaning lady polished the windows and floors only the day before, so at least my house almost looks the part.

“Moishe,” I say, “I need your help.” I stuff the wet load I’m still holding since the dreaded call came back into the machine. There’s no way I’m adding another piece of linen to the extensive collection gracing my dining room.

“And I don’t care if you’ll be late for work. This is your mother we’re talking about. Please go to the bakery for some kokosh cake and rugelach. And don’t get anything that looks obviously storebought, like those bakery sandwich cookies dipped in sprinkles.”

“Sure!” he says. “What else?” He’s ready to do anything in the world right now, and I’m tempted to ask for a diamond tennis necklace in honor of the occasion.

With the fridge door open, I take inventory and rattle off the rest of my list. “Okay.

We have enough milk for iced coffee, and let me see… Yes. There’s lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers, so I can throw together a salad, too. So I don’t need any other veggies. You could get Nish Nosh dressing, though, from the grocery. Some crackers, too. Next stop is the bagel shop. A few bagels and some spreads should do it.”

“Perfect,” Moishe says. “I’ll be home in a few.”

True to his words, he’s home very soon, arms laden with shopping bags. Then, knowing that helicoptering near me will will further tauten my nerves, he’s off to set the table.

It’s unbelievable, but I pull it off. My laundry is all hidden away, and my table is laden with very homemade-looking goodies. And the wrappers and bakery bags?

the garbage can. Thank you, Hashem, for roomy dryers. Thank you, Hashem, for bakeries. And thank you, Hashem, that mothers-in-law don’t come every day.

My husband’s face has a sheva brachos kind of glow.

It is his mother, after all, who’s coming, and he’s over the moon with joy! I can’t exactly say that my emotions mirror his, but all the tension melts away as soon as my mother-in-law arrives. She is blown away by how orderly my home is and compliments me effusively. I fill her plate and prepare her a coffee just the way she likes it.

We schmooze over cheese and lox as the steam billowing from her mug fogs her glasses. Having a mother-inlaw over is really not so bad.

“Mmmm. This is really good,” she says, sampling a slice of babka. “It tastes so much like mine. My recipe?”

She looks at me admiringly. “The layers are rolled so thinly. Kein ayin hora, with little kids home. How do you swing it all?”

I blush and nod and say nothing and think pretentious thoughts and my dear Thank you, mother-in-law interprets it as a humble acceptance.

Hashem, The afternoon proceeds beautifully. My mother-in-law that mothers- is loving every minute, and in-law don’t I’m as relaxed as they come.

It’s the proverbial quiet before come every the storm.

Soon I clear the table and day. we both settle on the couch.

Faces of pinch-worthy einiklach look down at us from the framed photographs surrounding the living area as we cover topics ranging from childrearing to — of course! — preserving bed linens. Suddenly, my mother-in-law lifts an unadorned finger. “My rings! Where are they? Did you see them?”

I look around, and she runs off to check the perimeter of the sink. She stops in her tracks. “Libby, they’re not here.”

There aren’t too many places to check, nor a cleaning lady or toddler to blame. Plus, we were in the dining room the entire time, which basically boils down the location of the elusive rings to one room. On all fours, I scavenge the floor, feeling for spherical metal objects.

But no ring turns up.

“The garbage!” I announce suddenly. “They must’ve stayed in the plastic tablecloth.”

“You’re right. I probably placed them near my plate when I went to wash.”

Oblivious to the grave I’m digging, I glove my hands quickly. My motherin-law, equally frantic, dons a pair of rubber gloves and helps me sift through the rubbish. Attacking the garbage, we look like a pair of overeager sanitation workers.

To our dismay, the tablecloth has been loosened, and the trash from within has settled to the bottom of the bag. I give the garbage bag a generous shake and the remains reshuffle.

Eggshells, cucumber peels, bread crusts, tattered receipts and old newspapers pass our hands. An entire day’s worth of garbage slowly reappears and gets thoroughly inspected. Finally, after coming across myriad “treasures,” my mother-inlaw bravely digs in her arm, only to retrieve a wrinkled paper bag emblazoned with the bakery’s logo.

“What’s this bag?” she asks.

I want to dismiss it as debris. Declare it worthless.

Warn her that it’s something venomous if touched.

Contaminated. A Measlescarrying bag. But in search of her rings, she begins inspecting it. As if protesting, the bag crinkles noisily. My mother-in-law straightens it and out comes a couple of crushed plastic containers.

The evidence is there, black on white. Only a blind person would miss the Chocolate Kokosh and Cinnamon Rugelach labels attached to the containers.

“Her recipe. Right.”

We mentioned in previous articles that when dealing with a mixture of two different types of foods or items, or a mixture of ochel (food) with pesoles (garbage),1 one can avoid issues of borer by following three conditions: 1) take what one wants to eat or use right away from what one doesn’t; 2) take it only immediately before eating or using; and 3) use one’s hands and not a kli that helps in the separation process.2 What is considered being taken?

Let’s discuss the first condition. When it comes to foods on a plate in front of someone, it is clear that what he takes with his hand is considered being taken from what is left on the plate. However, what if both parts, the ochel and the pesoles, are in one’s hands?

The peach pit Esti wants to eat a peach, but is nervous about borer because it has a pit. One way to avoid borer is to simply eat around the pit. But, ugh! Esti thinks, That is just so annoying!

So she goes through the list of rules and comes across the condition that she has to take the good from the bad. But what is considered being taken?

The halacha says that in such a case, Esti can cut the peach in half, hold the pit in one hand and the peach in the other, and pull away the hand that is holding the peach (but not the hand that is holding the pit!). This is considered taking the ochel from pesoles, since the pulling action is being done with the hand that has the ochel.3 This is only mutar to do if one also follows the condition to eat it immediately.

Chicken with bone Similarly, when eating chicken on the bone, where the separation is taking place when both parts are on the plate, the piece that one is moving is considered being taken.

So, when Mommy is cutting Shlomo’s chicken, she should hold the chicken down with a fork when cutting it, and pull the chicken away from the bone — but not the bone away from the chicken. In this way, one is following the condition of taking ochel from pesoles. Here, too, it is only mutar if one will eat it right away.

Pouring from a cup When it comes to pouring something that one is holding, there is a machlokes haposkim regarding what is considered being taken from what. Some hold that what is leaving is considered being taken from the cup that remains in one’s hand,4 whereas others hold that since the cup is in one's hand, the part remaining in the cup is considered being taken from what is leaving the cup.5 Since this is rather abstract, let’s look at an example.

According to the Mishnah Berurah’s (319:55, 62) understanding of the Taz, one is allowed to take a bit of ochel along with the pesoles, but according to the Chazon Ish (Orach Chaim siman 53) one must take all the ochel that is mixed with the pesoles. The halacha written above is according to the more machmir opinion of the Chazon Ish.

However, this is because the Mishnah Berurah went with the reasoning of the Magen Avraham that what is leaving is considered being taken. However, according to the Graz it would be assur to do this even to drink immediately. Therefore one should avoid putting oneself in a place where he has to choose between the Mishnah Berurah and the Graz by stopping the pouring before one reaches the tea that is close to the tea leaves.

There are small croutons floating on top of Shlomo’s soup — and Shlomo hates croutons in his soup, and wants to pour them out. So, according to those who hold that what is left in the cup in one’s hands is considered being taken, Shlomo can pour out the croutons (even by themselves, without taking any of the wanted part along with them) because it is considered taking the ochel (the broth that is left in the bowl in his hand) from the unwanted croutons that were poured out (as long as he drinks/eats what is in the bowl right away). On the other hand, according to those who hold that what is leaving the bowl is considered being taken, this would be assur since it is considered taking the pesoles from the ochel.

Since this is a machlokes among the biggest poskim, one should try and avoid putting oneself in a situation where one has to choose between the two opinions. How does one do this?

One eitzah is to pour out the top layer of the soup that is mixed with the croutons along with the croutons.6 This way one is not separating the pesoles from the ochel since the part of the broth that is mixed with the croutons is also leaving the cup.7 This is mutar according to all opinions, and may even be left to be eaten later, because one is not separating ochel and pesoles at all.

Tea leaves in a cup Another example where this may come up is in a case of tea leaves at the bottom of a cup. One wants to pour the tea into another cup while making sure to leave the tea leaves behind. This would be problematic since one is putting himself in the machlokes haposkim of what is being considered taken from what when pouring it out. Here, one can’t even use the eitzah above because the tea leaves are on the bottom, and therefore, one can’t pour it out along with the part of the tea that it is mixed with.

So what can we do? The halacha says that in this case, where all the tea leaves are at the bottom, one can pour out the tea until one gets close to the tea leaves because the top part of the tea is not considered mixed with the tea leaves.

But one must stop once he gets close to the tea leaves since the tea that is close to the tea leaves is considered mixed with the tea leaves, and one would put himself in the machlokes of what is being taken from what.8 In this case too, one can do this and drink it later because one is not separating any ochel from pesoles.

Non-opioid analgesics are a class of painkillers used to treat mild to moderate pain.

These include acetaminophen, ibuprofen and aspirin. They are also fever reducers — or antipyretics in medical jargon.

Acetaminophen and the Tylenol brand were introduced in 1955 by McNeil Laboratories, a family-owned pharmaceutical manufacturer.

Not wanting to compete with aspirin, they marketed it as a “feverreducing product,” as opposed to one that relieves pain. (It is interesting to note that while aspirin was Bayer’s brand name, and not a generic name, many generic companies market their acetylsalicylic acid as aspirin, since Bayer’s rights to the trademark were lost or sold in many countries.) Aspirin, the king in pain-killers until that point, steeply declined in popularity as Tylenol took over the scene, and was soon joined by Ibuprofen in 1962.

McNeil generated both the brand name, Tylenol, as well as the generic name “acetaminophen.”

The original Tylenol emerged as Elixir Tylenol, a prescriptiononly liquid children’s medicine packaged in a red fire-engine box with the slogan “For your little hotheads.”

In 1960, Tylenol became available over the counter.

Acetaminophen relieves pain by elevating the pain threshold (so the body can tolerate more pain before actually feeling it) and reduces fever by influencing the heat-regulating center in the brain to reduce the body’s temperature.

Using a kitchen spoon may seem convenient in a pinch, but don’t fall for the temptation. A teaspoon is a teaspoon — in your cake — but when it comes to the exact dosing of such potentially harmful chemicals, use only the measuring tools included in the package.

While acetaminophen is harmless — and oh, so helpful! — in small doses, if taken incorrectly, it can cause severe liver damage, or worse.

One should be very careful with the dosage, and not take or administer higher doses or more frequently than the directions instruct.

It was a great idea — concentrated infant Tylenol drops so that the forcing the sickly sweet liquid down a feverish infant’s throat takes half the time. But the idea cost lives, as people confused the concentrated liquid with the regular children’s liquid, which led to incorrect dosing. In response, companies standardized both versions to the same concentration. However, always double-check labels and dosing information before administering any medication to a child. (Infant Motrin, for example, still has a different concentration than Children’s Motrin.)

Having a hard time extracting the pain-relief through that tiny opening? This new design was launched in 2011 — not to make your life harder as you try to measure the dosage with a baby in your arm, but to reduce the amount that a child can accidentally drink from the bottle.

This happens because over-the-counter medication is as commonplace as food, giving people the false confidence that there’s no danger involved.

A recent study proved the frightening fact that at least 63,000 children under the age of six experience a non-hospital medication error every year. The data was based on calls parents placed to Poison Control after realizing the error, making the actual numbers much higher, given that many parents never realize their mistake…

Although most errors weren’t serious, medication mistakes can be fatal. And being that most caregivers are exhausted and distracted when children are sick, experts urge that before administering medication to children, always: 1. Double-check that you’re giving the right medication.

2. Confirm that you’re giving the right dosage.

3. Make sure you’re not mistakenly giving the child a second dosage.

DOES THE BRAND PAY? Medical experts claim that “the only way that store brands differ from the brand names is their impact on your wallet, not your body.” Factored into the cost of brand-name products, like Tylenol, Advil or Motrin, are the often billions of dollars that research and marketing cost for the product to make it onto shelves in the first place, and not higher-quality ingredients.

The experts don’t only say it — a peek into their medicine chests will confirm that they actually believe so.

Researchers studied which brands pharmacists use at home, and shockingly (or not!), 91 percent of them buy the generic brand headache medicine to use at home.

In a study done in 2015, it came to light that the people who can name the active ingredients in Bayer, Tylenol, Advil and Aleve (without peeking, of course!) were the ones who were more likely to buy generic brands, proving once again, that the ones in the know don’t fall for marketing, but the real, hard facts (as opposed to the rest of us, who need the reassurance of a brand name).

However, and this is not to be taken lightly, if you trust the brand product more, do not settle for a generic brand. Because when it comes to painkillers, what counts most is the belief that the pill will be effective, as is proven time and again by the many studies on the placebo effect.
