WHAT CHANUKAH LOOKS LIKE (Re: A Chanukah Party Made Elegant, Issue 174) I love looking through The Monsey View. Last week, skimming through the pages, my eyes fell upon your beautiful Chanukah party feature. I looked twice, and then three times. The party looked like a very upscale gathering, with lanterns, menu cards, fancy chargers, real flowers, dim lighting and more. And then the food! Anyone copying this would definitely end up with something spectacular… But allow me to sketch what my mother’s Chanukah party looks like. At her party, which still makes my children and me smile every year, the dining room is awash with light, and the menorah still burns brightly at the door. The decor attracts everyone with its good cheer. The colorful Chanukah tablecloth is covered with traditional delicacies, including chocolate gelt, chocolate dreidels, chips and nosh, as well as a huge stack of deep-fried potato latkes and, of course, doughnuts of every variety! The children are warned not to touch the goodies before eating dinner, which is always a simple, warm meal that is delicious and filling. And when the plates are cleared, the party begins… The music gets turned on, the games begin, and the men break out in spirited song of Haneiros Halalu… Ah freilichen Chanukah! A Happy Reader

In the wake of last week’s weather disaster, I feel like we should all take an honest look at what led up to the crisis that many of us, especially parents and school faculty, had to deal with on that fateful day. The job of meteorologists and weather reporters are to give us their most educated, accurate prediction of upcoming severe weather and road conditions. They are not “nevi’im,” and with the knowledge and information they have, they cannot possibly always be exactly on target, as we clearly saw last week. On the other hand, we have had countless situations when they predicted much worse scenarios than what actually happened. So what is a school to do? How are they to decide when to cancel school, delay school, dismiss early, etc.? Knowing that it’s impossible to know the exact weather situation that will ensue, logic would

tell us that when our children’s safety is at stake, it’s no question that schools should be super cautious when it comes to inclement weather conditions. School administrators and bus managers and principals and school secretaries are human beings, usually super nice and caring and wanting-to-please kind of people! When parents blame and complain and cry and condemn them when they feel that the outcome of the weather prediction doesn’t justify cancelling school, it makes them feel very bad and oftentimes guilty. These feelings fester and rear their heads the next time a decision has to be made. So, it is thanks to those parents who complained that when the bad weather does arrive, it comes with confusion and chaos! A STORY OF KIDDUSH HASHEM We’ve heard many stories after winter’s first snowstorm about people getting stuck in the snow and some even stranded. But here, I’d like to share a truly heartwarming story of boys who lent a helping hand to a stranger. Passing through Monsey, Mr. James West of Highland Mills, NY, was driving down Route 59 on that fateful Thursday afternoon. It was after four o’clock, and the snow was falling very heavily, causing the roads to become congested. Holding on to the steering wheel tightly, Mr. West tried his hardest to make it to his destination safely. But then, while trying to gain traction after waiting at a red light, his car slid and got stuck. As hard

Suddenly, seemingly out of nowhere, two “Jewish boys” holding their tefillin bags appeared. “Need some help?” they offered the 6-foot, 3-inch man. “We can try to help.” They began pushing the car from the rear with Mr. West pressing on the gas pedal, hoping and praying that his tires gain some traction. “Why don’t you put your tefillin in my back seat so they don’t get ruined,” Mr. West called out, over the din of the spinning wheels. “You know what tefillin are?” the boys asked, surprised. “I sure do! I teach Jewish boys at Yeshiva Degel HaTorah!” “Oh, we know that yeshivah. On Maple, right?” Mr. West responded in the affirmative. Then, the boys called out something in Hebrew, or Yiddish. And like a gushing waterfall, fifteen teenage boys came out from a nearby building. They pushed and pushed, saving the day for their grateful beneficiary. “Those guys had my car out of the snow in two minutes!” Mr. West later recalled with gratitude. “It was just unbelievable!” Ever so thankful, Mr. West got back into his car when one of the boys called out, “Just remember. Concern Throughout New York as State Issues Secular Curriculum Guidelines for Yeshivos New rules set down by New York State Department of Education commissioner MaryEllen Elia last week raise almost as many questions as answers, with vaguely worded guidelines that make local public school districts responsible for the quality of secular studies taught in yeshivos that are situated within their borders. In a conference call with reporters, Elia said that numerous factors need to be considered when determining whether schools are compliant with the new rules, including an understanding of the overall education provided by each school, reported Hamodia. The guidelines mandate that 72 minutes be dedicated daily to each of four subjects — English language arts, social studies, science and math — with additional required periods dedicated to visual arts, music and other subjects, for a total of about seven hours per day. But the rules also allow for “substantial equivalency,” with Elia noting that inspectors will need to consider the entire education provided by a school and not just the number of hours devoted to secular studies. Training sessions are due to begin next month, and community leaders have already begun working with the state to clarify the definition of substantial equivalency and how that would affect the number of hours per day devoted to secular subjects. Elia readily acknowledged that the guidelines would be more difficult to implement
in places like East Ramapo that have a much higher-thanaverage number of private schools. A statement released by the yeshivah advocacy group PEARLS called the new guidelines the result of a campaign of misinformation intended to undermine yeshivos, in addition to expressing concern that local school districts were being awarded oversight of yeshivos despite Elia’s assurances that final determinations would be made by her office. “Any attempt to impose uniformity on the almost 1,800 nonpublic schools in New York State, however well-intentioned, is only going to succeed if it appropriately accounts for the uniqueness of our schools and our educational system,” read the statement. Also mentioned was a requirement for mandatory yeshivah inspections every five years that would include scrutiny of numerous areas including curriculum, fire safety, safety drills, attendance and immunization records. Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel, executive vice president of Agudath Israel of America, said that Elia’s new guidelines included some positive elements as well as other items that could be potentially problematic. “We will work hard with our friends in the government to try and make sure that the yeshivos across the state are given their proper respect,” said Rabbi Zwiebel.
CDC and FDA Say No to Romaine After E. Coli Outbreak Romaine lettuce turned out to be an unlikely topic of conversation after the Centers for Disease Control and the United States Food and Drug Administration issued a rare warning last week advising consumers to avoid all romaine lettuce, in any form, from any source. Issued last Tuesday afternoon, the advisory was prompted by a rash of E. coli infections that sickened 32 people in eleven states in October, including 13 who were hospitalized, with one developing kidney failure. Another 18 people were sickened in Canada by the same strain of E. coli, which is believed to have been caused by tainted romaine lettuce. Experts warned that even cooking, washing or scrubbing tainted lettuce with baking soda

The advisory targeted individuals, restaurants and retailers and included whole heads of romaine, romaine hearts and bags and boxes of lettuce and salad blends that include romaine lettuce. Warnings were also issued to sanitize refrigerator drawers and shelves that were potentially affected by washing them with warm, soapy water. While consumers lined up in Costco and other local stores to return their romaine, store shelves in kosher supermarkets were stocked last Thursday with romaine lettuce and signs assuring customers that the greens were safe, despite the CDC warnings to the contrary. A letter from Bodek said that independent laboratory tests had confirmed that its products are “totally safe to eat,” while Kosher Gardens, which markets greens under its own label as well as Pos’Tiv, issued a statement indicating that its products were not associated with the national E. coli outbreak because they were grown “in our own fields under controlled environments.” Two cases of E. coli have been identified in New York. Symptoms of E. coli can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting and mild fever, and can appear three to four days after eating an item tainted by the bacteria. Anyone experiencing these symptoms is advised to contact their health care provider and local health department.

Serving food buffet-style is the perfect way to lighten the load on the hostess while keeping the party mood relaxed and informal. It also gives guests the freedom to come back for a second (and third!) helping of their favorite dishes — and to select only what they want to eat. At a buffetstyle event, even the picky eaters will find something enticing. A doughnut bar is always the most delightful part of the party for children and adults alike, and adds an amazing Chanukah spirit. You can display it on a cart and wheel it in once the main meal is over.

Deconstructed doughnuts are especially pretty, and allow guests to enjoy more of what is really their favorite part of a doughnut — the custard!
Add some churros for a break from the standard.

Fill glass jars with cappuccino, ice-cream based drinks or even chocolate milk, and add a mini doughnut on top.
Artisanal popcorn adds pop to the bar and fits right in with the doughnut fun. These mini replicas of typical mixing bowls are a favorite of mine!
These doughnut racks are inexpensive and give any table a fun Chanukah look.

EASY HOMEMADE GLAZED DOUGHNUT HOLES These are everything you want in a doughnut hole — soft with a doughy center and slightly crisp exterior, and covered in sweet, sticky glaze. Best of all, there’s no yeast involved, and that means no rising or rolling required.
DOUGHNUT HOLES • 5 cups vegetable oil, for frying • 1 cup milk • 1 large egg • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 2 T. sugar • 4½ tsp. baking powder • ½ tsp. salt • ¼ cup (½ stick) unsalted butter, melted
DIRECTIONS 1. In a bowl, whisk together the milk and egg. 2. In a separate bowl, add all dry ingredients and add to wet ingredients. Mix well. 3. Form balls using a cookie scoop. 4. Heat oil and fry.
GLAZE • 1½ cups confectioners’ sugar • 3½ T. whole milk • 2 tsp. vanilla extract

DAIRY CREAM OF BROCCOLI SOUP This is creamiest soup ever. It’s packed with flavor, perfectly thick and velvety smooth. Just top it with homemade sourdough croutons, and you’ve got a bowl of warm and hearty goodness.
INGREDIENTS • • • • •
½ stick butter ¼ cup olive oil 2 medium onions, diced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 bay leaf

1 24 oz. bag of broccoli florets 3 cups water 1 T. onion soup mix Salt and pepper to taste 2 cups half-and-half
DIRECTIONS 1. In a deep pot, melt butter and olive oil. 2. Sauté onions and garlic until lightly golden, and add bay leaf. 3. Add frozen broccoli and sauté for 15 minutes. 4. Add 3 cups of water. Bring to a boil. Add onion soup mix and salt and pepper to taste. 5. Add half-and-half. 6. Discard bay leaf and blend the soup with an immersion blender.
PARMESAN-VEGETABLE ANGEL HAIR PASTA The combination of roasted vegetable and parmesan pasta results in a dish that’s scrumptions and packed with flavor.
INGREDIENTS • ½ package angel hair pasta • 1 package cherry tomatoes on the vine • 4 purple onions • ¼ cup olive oil

1 tsp. basil Salt and pepper to taste 1 package fresh spinach ¾ cup parmesan cheese
DIRECTIONS 1. Cook angel hair pasta as per package instructions and drain. 2. Cut cherry tomatoes into quarters and dice onions in large dice cut. Place them onto a sheet pan and drizzle with olive oil, basil, and salt and pepper. 3. Bake at 425° for 25 minutes. 4. Take the pan out of the oven. Add spinach and toss well with the other vegetables. Bake for an additional 7 minutes, until spinach wilts. 5. In a bowl, mix the vegetables into the pasta and add the parmesan cheese. Add more salt if needed and mix well.
LEMON-HERB FISH TACOS WITH PURPLE SLAW These tacos are simple to prepare, and topped with a zesty and flavorful cabbage cilantro lime slaw. There is something incredible that happens when lime and cilantro come together with the salmon fillets — they create a mouthful of fresh and exquisite flavor.
INGREDIENTS • 12 soft corn tacos
dill • ¼ tsp. salt • ¼ tsp. pepper • 4 T. olive oil
SLAW • • • •
1 pack shredded purple cabbage 4 scallions cut into thin rings 1 cup fresh cilantro, coarsely chopped 1 small jalapeno, thinly diced
SLAW DRESSING • 2 T. mayo • 1 T. rice vinegar
These loaded hasselback potatoes are a guaranteed hit for any occasion. This recipe was inspired by one of my favorite appetizers — potatoes with a crispy skin that is covered in cheese and then dipped in sour cream.
INGREDIENTS • • • •
12 small red potatoes ½ cup olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 1 package shredded mozzarella cheese
• 1 container sour cream • Pinch of cayenne pepper • 1 bunch of scallions, sliced into thin rings
DIRECTIONS
FISH • 12 thin pieces of salmon fish (deskinned) • Juice of 1 lemon • 3 cubes frozen
SOUR CREAM–SCALLION HASSELBACK POTATOES
• Juice of 1 lime • 1 tsp. honey
DIRECTIONS 1. Mix fish with the rest of the ingredients and bake, uncovered, at 350° for 25 minutes. 2. Place the purple cabbage in a bowl and add the scallions, cilantro and jalapeno. 3. In a container, add all dressing ingredients, close the lid and shake well. 4. Add the dressing to the purple slaw and mix well. 5. Char each taco over an open-flame burner for a half minute on each side. 6. To assemble tacos, place the fish and slaw onto taco and enjoy!
1. Slice each potato thinly three-quarters way through to the bottom. 2. Place all the potatoes in a bowl and pour oil over them. 3. Massage the oil well into all slices and grooves. 4. Place the potatoes on a sheet pan, sprinkle salt and pepper, and bake at 450° for 45 minutes or until soft. 5. Remove from oven, sprinkle cheese between the slices, and bake for an additional 15 minutes. 6. Top with a dollop of sour cream, sprinkle a dash of cayenne pepper on top and garnish with scallions.
BALSAMIC BABY BELLA–SPINACH SALAD This is a great recipe for impressing guests. The fresh baby spinach, baby bella mushrooms, and the sweet mix of balsamic vinegar and honey give this salad fabulous flavor and tang. The crunch from the pecans adds amazing texture too.
INGREDIENTS • 1 package baby bella mushrooms, thinly sliced • 2 packages fresh baby spinach • 1 package honey-glazed pecans, coarsely chopped

¼ cup olive oil 1 T. toasted sesame oil 4 cloves garlic, crushed ¼ cup balsamic vinegar 1½ T. honey
DIRECTIONS 1. In a skillet, heat olive oil and toasted sesame oil. 2. Add the mushrooms and sauté for 10 minutes. 3. Add the crushed garlic and sauté for additional 5 minutes. 4. Add the balsamic vinegar and honey, and bring to a boil. Cook for additional 7 minutes. 5. Allow to cool, and toss with baby spinach. Sprinkle chopped honey-glazed pecans on top and enjoy!

Children love to perform. Highly imaginative and creative, with a natural flair for drama, you’ll find them saving up bits and scraps to serve as props and practicing for days on end for their neighborhood plays. A Chanukah family get-together is the perfect opportunity for the children to shine in a Chanukah presentation for the guests to enjoy. In the week ahead, let the children channel their energy in this wholesome and creative project. They can paint scenery, collect props and find makeshift spotlights better that you can ever imagine — so much so that in the middle of the play you might suddenly get reunited with items that have gone missing in your house. (Oh, that’s where the house plants disappeared to, and that’s why the attic light was left on, and that’s why there were no dreidels left in the Chanukah box...) But the nachas will be well worth it! This play can be modified to cater to a girls or boys cast/audience; just change the characters to female as needed.

Use a super-large flashlight as a spotlight. Children manning the spots can do so from a ladder in the back of a room or some other creative spot.
Left side: American soldiers marching through the forest.
SOLDIER SONG 1… 2… 3… 1… 2… 3…. We are the American Army The Nazis we beat, 1-2-3… We are the strongest army! One soldier notices Chaim and hangs back while the rest of the soldiers leave. He approaches the young boy.
SOLDIER (SHLOMO): (commanding tone) What are you holding, child? Chaim holds on tighter and gets a very frightened look on his face. Tries to escape. The soldier offers him a chocolate bar and physically holds him to prevent him from escaping. Then the soldier looks at the object.
SOLDIER: (softer tone) A menorah? Where do you have this from? CHAIM: (quietly) I got it from my mother… as a yerushah.
SOLDIER: And your mother, is she alive? CHAIM: N-n-no. (sighs softly) She was killed… at home. By a Nazi. (looks scared of Shlomo and his uniform)
SOLDIER: Oy! Hashem yinkom damam! (puts hand on the boy’s shoulder) Is your father still alive?
CHAIM: Chaim. SOLDIER: And your last name? CHAIM: I don’t know (voice cracks), I forgot. I keep trying to remember, but I can’t. SOLDIER: I have an amazing idea. I’ll take you home and adopt you as a brother.
CHAIM: I don’t know; he disappeared.
CHAIM: (face lights up)
SOLDIER: Don’t be scared. My name is Shlomo Lerner, and I’m also a Yid, see? (shows his tzitzis to Chaim) Nu, continue.
SOLDIER: I’ll watch you and keep you safe until I go home to my family in America, and then I’ll take you along with me.
CHAIM: My mother gave his menorah to me before I was sent away to live with our cleaning lady… right before the war broke out. She made me promise to keep it safe.
CHAIM: To America? That’s where we’ll go? (eyes open wide)
SOLDIER: How did you manage that? CHAIM: We dug a hole under a huge stone next to our house and marked it. Now that the war is over and the cleaning lady sent me away, I came to pick it up.
SOLDIER: Yes. You’ll get to know my family. (pinches Chaim’s cheek) They’ll be so excited with you! CHAIM: Oh. (thinks a bit) But… a new language… a new home… a new family. I can’t! (whimpers) I can’t forget the image of my parents! And how will I ever know what happened to my father?
Soldier looks up at the sky with a sad expression, and Chaim looks at the menorah.
SOLDIER: Don’t worry, Chaim. Hashem will help you! You’ll like it, and you’ll start a new life as part of my family.
SOLDIER: What’s your name, tzaddik’l?
CHAIM: I’ll try. They look at each other and the scene closes.

Everyone dressed in the 1950s style Fedoras and newsboy caps should be easy to obtain. Plaid vests, knickers, knee socks and bow ties will further complete the look. You can use colored tape as suspenders.
Shlomo and Chaim, each holding a suitcase, walk toward the family.
SHLOMO: (walking to his father and hugging him) Tatty! I didn’t see you in such a long time. (leans on his shoulder) I came back alive. Hodu la’Hashem! MR. LERNER: Baruch haba, Shlomo! Oy! It’s so good to see you alive. Chaim stands off to a side. Finally Mr. Lerner notices him, goes to him and kisses him.
MR. LERNER: Shlomo, is this the child you spoke about? SHLOMO: Yes, this is Chaim. (points to family) Chaim, this is my father, and this is my mother and this here is Yankele, my little brother. They’re all thrilled to see you!

But still… YANKELE: And I’m so excited with my new brother! Yankele hugs Chaim and brings a truck or some other toy to play with him. Chaim follows without saying a word.

He always comes the second night! (she turns to Chaim) Chaim, you’re going to like him. He’s Tatty’s friend, and he’s the owner of a very large museum of antiques! (A knock at the door. Mr. Lerner opens it.)
MR. SIMON: Shalom aleichem, how are you, Harav Lerner? MR. LERNER: Good, good, baruch Hashem. Come in and I’ll introduce you to our newest family member.
Mrs. Lerner brings in a plate of latkes while Mr. Simon looks around the room. Kids start a game of dreidel. They speak quietly among themselves.
MR. SIMON: (looks around the room and spots Chaim’s menorah) This menorah, where do you have it from? MR. LERNER: Chaim brought it here with him. It’s a yerushah from his parents. MR. SIMON: (rushing over to Chaim) Chaim! This menorah! How much money would you take for this? I want it for the museum! CHAIM: (hysterical) No! Absolutely not! MR. SIMON: I’ll give you $2,000, $5,000. CHAIM: (shakes his head) MR. SIMON: $10,000.
MR. SIMON: (takes off his coat) Oh! You had a new baby?
CHAIM: (grabs the menorah and holds it tight, like in the forest)
MR. LERNER: No. (chuckles) Come meet Chaim, our newly adopted son. He’s from Europe.
SHLOMO: (approaching Chaim) Chaim, don’t worry, this is America; you don’t have to sell it.
MR. SIMON: From Europe? He survived the terrible war?
MR. SIMON: $50,000.
MR. LERNER: Yes. He’s such a nachas to us. Mr. Simon and Chaim shake hands.

MRS. LERNER: I’m making latkes; who would like some? SHLOMO, YANKELE, CHAIM: I do! MRS. LERNER: Good. Yankele, please set the table! Family sits down, and Chaim brings the dreidels.
CHAIM: Let’s play! YANKELE: I’m first! Mr. Lerner and Shlomo sit down to learn. Mrs. Lerner brings latkes. Suddenly there’s a knock at the door.
MRS. LERNER: Yankele, please open the door, YANKELE: But maybe it’s the cleaning lady. I’m scared. MR. LERNER: All right. Shlomo, please go open the door. And Yankele, it’s time for bed, go change into pajamas. YANKELE: I don’t want to go to sleep! CHAIM: Yankele, come. I’ll give you a prize, and I’ll put you to sleep. Let’s go. (they exit) As soon as they leave, a man comes in. He looks at Chaim’s menorah.
VISITOR: This menorah, where do you have it from? No one answers.
It’s just that I passed the house and I saw it. And before the war… (voice cracks) we had the exact same one. I thought it’s the only one in the world. MR. LERNER: What’s your name, Reb Yid? VISITOR: Yankel. Yankel Stern.

VISITOR: (as soon as he sees Chaim) “Chaim’l, Chaim’l! My child!” CHAIM: Tatte, Tatte! They fall on each other’s shoulders and cry.

While you should really leave the creativity up to the kids, here are some ideas that may help: For makeshift curtains you can use a coat rack with shower curtains or plastic tablecloths. For lighting effects, wrap colorful cellophane paper around flashlights, and children can be perched on stools or ladders with the spotlights. Kids can also be at light switches to blink the light when drama is needed. For costumes, Purim boxes are great for hats and ties. Superfab allows for costume-making with just scissors and glue. Garbage bags can work for choir or dance costumes. If the room isn’t too big, fake mikes can be used for effect. And, of course, a speaker system or microphone that really works will definitely delight the kids.

Razzle flavor at its best, even without the ice cream! I like to use white chocolate that contains cocoa butter for better flavor. If your pantry doesn’t stock razzle mix, create your own by combining toppings such as rice crispies, coconut, sprinkles, flavored chips and nut crunches.
INGREDIENTS 1 white baking chocolate bar (Oppenheimer’s 10.5 oz.) ½ cup crunchy peanut butter ¾ cup razzle mix (plus more for topping)
DIRECTIONS 1. Break chocolate into small pieces and place in a 24-ounce container with peanut butter. 2. Pour boiling water into a 32-ounce container and put container with chocolate and peanut butter into the hot water. Leave in water for approximately 10–15 minutes, replacing the hot water every 5 minutes. 3. Once most of the chocolate has melted, remove from water, and mix until chocolate is smooth. 4. Add razzle mix. 5. Spread onto foil-lined baking pan and sprinkle with razzle topping. 6. Allow to harden and cut into desired shapes using metal cookie cutters. 7. Decorate with colored chocolate.

These may not have a perfect, professional look, but are tempting and adorable for kids. This uses a silicon dreidel mold, available in various sizes. The mold I used, which makes three dreidels, sells for $6.99. The addition of marshmallows in the peanut chew mixture is delicious, but it makes the mixture more sticky to work with. You may choose to omit them.
INGREDIENTS 10 large marshmallows (optional)
1 cup peanut butter 1 cup corn syrup
10 Large marshmallows, cut into 2-3 pieces
1 cup sugar 5–6 cups rice crisps
DIRECTIONS 1. Melt first three ingredients in a saucepan (add marshmallows, if desired). 2. Add rice crisps and mix well. 3. Press peanut chew mixture into sides of silicon dreidel mold. Cut a few large marshmallow into pieces, press into mixture and cover with more peanut chew until mold is full. 4. Allow to harden and remove from mold. Press two halves together to form dreidel. 5. Form letters with chocolate or with alef-beis chocolate molds.

“You can give me something hard to make. You know, no kids underfoot, lots of free time.” It was two weeks after my wedding, and Breindy, a cousin through marriage, called to invite me to the extended Berkowitz family Chanukah party. After complimenting me effusively on our gorgeous wedding and exchanging polite chitchat, she asked if there’s anything I could offer for the buffet. Like an overeager student, I jumped to the occasion and offered to take the most complicated thing on her list. “Wow!” she said. “But you practically just got married. You sure?” Her voice was laced with excitement. It was probably after a dozen give-mesomething-super-easy requests, and here, without any prodding, she struck gold. “I love the kitchen,” I reiterated, looking around my diminutive kitchenette. “Feel free to give me anything.” There was a pause as she reviewed the list of food. “How about blintzes?” I gave my kitchen and the one inch of milchig counter space another glance. “Blintzes sound awesome! How many? You’re probably expecting a huge crowd, aren’t you?” “Yes! Can you make 75, and I’ll have someone else do the rest?” “Perfect. Works for me. Good luck with the rest of the phone calls!” I was already calculating that I’d need four large packages of farmer cheese and another bag of sugar. One recipe yielded about 20 blintzes, so I was going to quintuple the recipe. Unfazed by the size of my kitchen, let alone the limited counter space I had for milchigs, I got to work. My husband generously offered to fetch the groceries. “Food,” he remarked as he walked in with the bags, his eyes fixated on the grand total at the bottom of the receipt, “is really expensive. I never realized. Maybe don’t offer something so big next year. We’re on a kollel budget...”
Meet my husband, Mr. Economical. If anyone knows how to save a dollar, he’s the one. When he was a bachur, the meager allowance he received from his parents before every zman lasted like the candles and challos in the Imahos’ tents. And it’s no wonder. Contemplation and thought go into his every purchase, and only if an acquisition is deemed highly necessary does he go ahead with it. While in yeshivah, my husband would often visit a cousin of his, a popular musician in Eretz Yisroel, while he was playing at weddings. Also quite musical, my husband would cheer him on, motion for him to go an octave higher and adjust the volume of the speakers. My husband did it simply out of the goodness of his heart. Um... almost. Because wedding buffets also served cholent, and as the musician’s helper, he felt more than welcome to help himself to a a free meal! And after our wedding, the purchase of our couch was quite the parsha! It took ten stores and double that number of hours until we finally gave a deposit. Purchasing the rest of the furniture before the wedding — without him — had been a smart move. But if this was his only chasaron… “Don’t forget,” I said now, helicoptering over him to see the total, “It’s l’kavod yom tov. These expenses don’t count.” He placed the bags of groceries on the counter, and I got straight to cracking eggs. Within moments my kitchen transformed into a blintz factory, as I used every inch of it for a different function. Two frying pans were on the stovetop, the bowl holding the crepe batter was in the sink, and for lack of space, I used my garbage can (a towel covering the lid) to support the plate of hot crepes. Flip, flip, flip. I was hard at work. Over crepes and cheese filling, my husband and I schmoozed the night away. I was filling and rolling while my husband assumed the role of blintz

connoisseur, tasting one blintz too many. One thing was certain: Following a recipe that yielded over 80 blintzes had been a good idea. My husband reached for one more. “Hmmm. These are really good. Beats Bubby Berkowitz’s polochintos, and that’s saying something.” He smacked his lips. I winked. “Worth the expense?” Reaching for a napkin, he laughed. “Okay, okay. For special occasions.” “I’m looking forward to meeting your family,” I said, layering the blintzes in the pan. I imagined all of them being blown away by my culinary abilities. Four full 9x13s later, basking in a glow of accomplishment and heat, I tidied up my kitchen. The party took place on the first night of Chanukah. After a very cozy licht tzinden, a fresh couple, balancing blintz-filled pans like platinum trophies, made their way to the small, nondescript hall. Hands full, I couldn’t even protect my sheitel from the wind, but as long as it wasn’t raining — a peril to my crowning glory — I was breathing. The entranceway was teeming with kids, their faces jelly-stained and flurries of confectioners’ sugar on their cashmere gray sweaters. Streamers and balloons hung across the ceilings, and earplugs would have been nice to block out the cats’ choir of einiklach belting out Al Hanisim on top of their lungs. (Was singing four versions of Al Hanisim prearranged?) Looking where to hang up my coat, I spotted a coat rack, with one empty hanger among a Zara puffer, three shopping bags and a mink stole, and hung my kallah coat toward the rear for easy locating later. “Enjoy! After a quick inspection, I gracefully sauntered into the hall, my ticket to fame in my hands. Suddenly, an alarming smell assailed my nostrils. Wafting from the sternos was an aroma suspiciously reminiscent of sesame chicken, lo mein, stuffed cabbage and pastrami egg rolls, an aroma indisputably fleishig! Paralyzed, I observed as smoke billowed from the fuel cans and water hissed from the roasters. My mind was smoking and hissing too. Blintzes? What is wrong with you? Why didn’t you ask if the party was milchig or fleishig? Blintzes aren’t exclusive to cheese filling! You were just excited to show off. Look at what a fool you are now! Breindy, the emcee of the event, approached me, all smiles, her eyes fixated on the bekelach. “You’re right on time for the choir. Let me guess. Potato blintzes? Vegetable? Liver?” “Ummm...” I coughed. “My blintzes can be served in six hours from now.” “Oy! I can’t believe I forgot to tell you!” She looked at me, horrified, as if she had actually eaten a cheese blintz after some chicken. “I’m so sorry!” The image of my new husband, eyes sparkling as he reached for another blintz, popped up. “Don’t worry, Breindy,” I said. “We’ll have lunch for the next few weeks. They freeze amazingly well.” Then I took out my phone and called my husband. “You’re in for many special occasion lunches,” I said. “Expense is on me...”

IT’S TIME TO LIGHT THE CHANUKAH CANDLES. Moishy, as a mature boy, is trying to prepare the licht and get them to stay still in the menorah. Yanky, his younger brother, is trying to reach the matches while his father isn’t looking. Mommy is in the kitchen finishing up the latkes and doughnuts and filling the house with the delicious aroma of Chanukah. Meanwhile, Tatty is preparing his menorah with great kavanah. He thinks of his kinderlach, the lights of his world, and how he hopes that they will all grow up to be ehrliche Yidden. Chanukah is a wonderful time to fill our children with the warmth and joy of Yiddishkeit. However, as we asked last week, how indeed do we make sure that they actively participate in the yom tov and internalize its wonderful hashpaos? Before we light the licht, we must figure out exactly how we intend the Chanukah lighting to look like in our home and what we can do to make that vision a reality. Reflecting upon this is the greatest hachanah one can make for the mitzvah. The war between the Yevanim and the Chashmonaim was not about who was stronger. It was about what is the ikar and what is the tafel. When we ourselves focus on what is the ikar while doing this mitzvah and infuse our home with simchas hamitzvos, we prove by example who was really victorious in this struggle. We must try our best to put aside our exhaustion and worries and focus on filling ourselves with excitement for the mitzvah and the yom tov. Ultimately, our own attitude will influence the other members of our family, thus setting the atmosphere in our homes. The minhag on Chanukah is to look at the flames for thirty minutes. However, children cannot simply sit beside

the candles and feel the beauty of yom tov. It is up to us to sing beautiful niggunim with them that bring joy and touch the heart while we take in the light of the Chanukah licht. While some children enjoy singing, others are touched by a heartwarming story, so another good idea is to share with them a story that can inspire them to focus on ruchniyus in their own lives. We can help them understand, in a pleasant manner geared to their age, how the war of Chanukah was about investing more focus into ruchniyus and believing that doing so will bring joy to both the spiritual and physical aspects of our lives. We are all surrounded by so much gashmiyus, and it can be difficult to extricate ourselves from the many ways in which it takes over our lives. It is up to us to fight that internal war and figure out what we can give up and how we can strengthen the spirituality in our lives. Our ruchniyus is measured by our mesiras nefesh, the sacrifices we make for the sake of our spiritual growth. I think it is this feeling of spiritual connection that filled me with a sense of wonder on that memorable day in 1990 when I looked at the dancing flames of my Chanukah menorah for the first time. The seforim write that although no one knows where the Menorah of the Beis Hamikdash is today, the ner hamaaravi still burns and shines through all the generations to keep us strong and internally connected to the Shechinah. Every time we look at our Chanukah menorah, its flames connect us to that powerful, spiritual light that shines through all the generations and passes on the message of what is the ikar for a Yid and how we can strengthen our ruchniyus. The menorah represents this struggle between spirituality and physicality and empowers us to make the
ikar a focus in our lives. And this is the pirsumei nisa that Chazal want from us, the powerful reminder of what we are here to accomplish in this world. It is a reminder for us to assess where we are and figure out where we really want to be. The Gemara teaches us that while the Shechinah does not go below 10 tefachim (as we learn from the kapores in the Kodesh Kedashim), the menorah can stand lower than 10 tefachim. This teaches us that even if our level in ruchniyus is still very low, as long as we learn to focus on the ikar and resolve to invest sincere efforts in our avodah, the Shechinah will come to us even at our lowly level. When we put all of our efforts into showing what is the ikar, it creates a tremendous Kiddush Hashem. When we approach Chanukah with these thoughts, and with the sincere desire to connect with our children and with Hashem, lighting the menorah will take on a whole different appearance in our homes. As we light the menorah, we will be mefarsem what the main thing in life is. Ultimately, when this is our goal on Chanukah, we will pass the thirty minutes in front of the menorah with joy, together with our children. We can also dance with them or do whatever we see increases their excitement and enjoyment so that the feeling of the yom tov will remain in their minds forever. Additionally, we can connect to the menorah with a deeper understanding of our daily wars with the yetzer hara. The Nesivos Shalom writes that the only way to win the war with the yetzer hara is to believe that we will win it. The Chanukah candles can help us both believe in our ability to triumph as well as achieve our goal of increasing our focus on the ikar. THE HALACHOS AND MINHAGIM OF CHANUK AH PART 1
Is There an Obligation of Seudas Chanukah? Unlike Purim, Chazal did not obligate us to eat a seudah on Chanukah — rather, they instituted the days of Chanukah as a time for hallel and hodaah. The Levush explains that this is because on Purim our enemies wanted to destroy us physically, so the celebration involves our bodies, but on Chanukah, they weren’t seeking to kill us, as long as we wouldn’t keep mitzvos. This made the battle of Chanukah a spiritual attack, and therefore, the celebration is one of hallel and hodaah to Hashem, which is what the Yevanim tried to prevent.1 The Maamar Mordechai and the Chida suggest that the reason for having a seudah on Purim is that the neis happened through the seudah that Esther made, but on Chanukah, the neis happened through the neiros, so Chazal didn’t institute an obligation to have a seudah.2 Nevertheless, there is a source behind making seudos. The reason comes from the Midrash that says that the Mishkan was completed on the 25th of Kislev, but Hashem waited to inaugurate it until Nissan, the month in which Yitzchak was born. Hashem said He would repay Kislev with the inauguration of the Beis Hamikdash in the days of the Chashmonaim, after they’d defeat the Greeks. Therefore, there are “eight days of inaugura1

tion.”3 This designation, combined with the minhag to say words of shevach and sing zemiros on Chanukah, is why a seudah on Chanukah is considered a seudas mitzvah. The minhag is to serve dairy foods in memory of the neis that happened with Yehudis, who fed the leader of the enemy dairy foods before beheading him.4 Some also have the minhag to serve fried foods in memory of the neis that happened through oil. On Shabbos Chanukah, it is praiseworthy to add an extra dish in honor of the yom tov. All the more so when Rosh Chodesh falls on Shabbos. It is also good to add something extra to the food on Rosh Chodesh that falls on a weekday during Chanukah for pirsum ha’nes.5 Saying Hallel The full Hallel is said on every day of Chanukah. There are several reasons given for this: 1) We light a different number of lights every day, just like on Sukkos, when a different number of korbanos were brought each day. Thus, we say a full Hallel every day of Sukkos, and so too on Chanukah. 2) The miracle renewed itself every day. 3) The Torah reading for each day of Chanukah is about the offering that the Nesi’im brought each day of the Chanukas HaMishkan. brought a korban each day, we say Hallel every day.6 There is a machlokes haposkim regarding whether women are also obligated to say a full Hallel.7 Therefore, to abide by the opinions who are machmir, it is best for women to try saying the full Hallel every day of Chanukah. Ashkenazi women can also make a bracha before beginning Hallel, while Sephardic women should refrain from making the bracha and just say the Hallel itself.

Obligation of Women in Lighting The halacha says that women are also obligated in the lighting of the Chanukah lights, because as mentioned above, the neis happened through Yehudis. Also, they too were saved from the decree of the Yevanim who’d take the women captive on the night before their wedding.8 However, the minhag is that where there are men around, the men light and not the women.9 The Chasam Sofer explains that since in the time of Chazal when the mitzvah of hadlakas neiros Chanukah was instituted everyone lit outside, they didn’t want to obligate women to go out and light among the men at night since it would detract from the kavod of women. Today, even though we light indoors, the minhag for women not to light remains in place.10 However, in a house where there are no men around, a woman must light and make the brachos in order to fulfill her obligation of lighting the candles.11 Davening After Lighting The minhag in Klal Yisroel is for women to daven after lighting the Shabbos candles to be zoche to have kids who are talmidei chachamim. The reason for this is similar to that of why we say all types of harachamans that ask for things after Birkas Hamazon, which is that tefillos said at the time of performing a mitzvah are more easily accepted.12 The reason we daven specifically for kids to become talmidei chachamim is based on the Gemara that says that one who is careful with the mitzvah of ner (lighting with good oil, nice wicks, on time, etc.) will be zoche to have banim talmidei chachamim.13 Rashi on the Gemara says that this refers to being careful with neiros Chanukah and neiros Shabbos. So, at the time of doing the mitzvah for which the reward is banim talmidei chachamim, it is an auspicious time to say a tefillah of that nature.14 According to this, it is also a segulah to daven for our children to become talmidei chachamim after lighting Chanukah candles. It is also a good time for women to daven that their husbands become talmidei chachamim.15 The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. DOUGHNUT OR DONUT? Originally, it was doughnut — and that is still its proper name — but in the 19th century the snazzier, simplified spelling was introduced in America by New York-based Display Donut Machine Corporation. Their motive was to make the word more pronounceable for the foreigners they hoped would buy their doughnut-making equipment for their startup doughnut businesses.
It took until the late 20th century for the new spelling to catch on, when all those Dunkin’ Donuts ads finally earned “donut” its place in U.S. language.
Today, this five-letter spelling has traveled way farther than Uncle Sam’s backyard. Its use has been found in New Zealand and even upon the shores of the guardians of the King’s English — in the U.K. alone.
The original name of this sweet confection can be traced back to Elizabeth Gregory, who according to sources “made a wicked deep-fried dough” and “put hazelnuts or walnuts in the center, where the dough might not cook through,” earning it the name doughnut!
Seems her son, Hanson Gregory, was not all that pleased with the nut center and decided to get rid of it, earning him credit for the ring-shaped doughnut. At the age of 16, the story goes, while on a ship, he used the galley’s tin pepper box to punch a hole through the center of the each dough before frying it.
What he was doing making doughnuts while aboard a ship seems unclear. But he definitely wasn’t the only seafarer who did not travel without this sweet treat. Admiral Richard E. Byrd was said to have taken along 100 barrels of doughnut flour (enough for two years) on one of his South Pole expeditions.
While they come in a huge variety — think doughnut twists, doughnut holes and flattened spheres — the two most common types of doughnuts are, no surprise there, ring-shaped doughnuts and filled doughnuts.
The geometric name for a doughnut ring shape is a torus.

Doughnut rings are formed one of two ways: either by joining ends of a long, thin piece of dough, or by use of a doughnut cutter that cuts both the outside and inside of the doughnut , leaving over a smooth ring.
In case you didn’t know just how much fat each of these confections have (and you actually want to know), here it is: Doughnuts contain about 25 percent of oil by weight! As for the sugar content, that depends on its filling and glaze…
Studies have shown that if a person were to add a doughnut a day to their regular diet, they would gain about one extra pound every ten days. No studies have been released to date on the weight gain accumulated after consuming three doughnuts daily for eight consecutive days… You tell me.
There is an enduring stereotype of police officers eating doughnuts. It emerged in the 1940s due to the fact that doughnut shops, which were open early in the morning and late at night to prepare fresh doughnuts for the morning rush, were the only places the cops could buy something fresh to eat during the graveyard shift.
In Clare, Michigan, there’s a doughnut shop run entirely by police officers! Doughnut and Cops, as it’s now called, was on the verge of closing down, and nine members of the police force stepped in to save this historic shop (established in 1896) from permanently closing its doors.
The Berliner is the typical round jelly-filled, sugar-dusted doughnut that originated in Germany. In the 1960s, at the beginning of the Cold War, President John F. Kennedy paid a visit to Berlin, and there, against the backdrop of the Berlin Wall, announced, “Ich bin ein Berliner,” in his very popular anti-communist speech. The grammar of this phrase was dissected time and again, with people saying that Kennedy had in essence proclaimed himself a jelly doughnut by adding the indefinite article “ein” (an) to the phrase. In the aftermath of the speech, Berlin cartoonists had a field day drawing talking doughnuts. Most argue, though, that had he simply said “I am Berliner,” it would mean he’d been born in Berlin — and not just that he was a Berliner in spirit. Furthermore, the term for doughnut actually used in West Berlin, as opposed to in other parts of Germany — where it’s Berliner — is pfannkuchen (literally, “pancake”).
