PRAISE AND DON’T PRY It is that time of year again. Mothers and daughters are hustling, shopping for the upcoming yomim tovim and winter season. We all feel so good to be able to outfit our children so beautifully, and rightfully so! Yet for some of us, new clothing may just mean “new for me” instead of “new from the store.” That beautiful outfit may just be from their cousin, neighbor, friend or even purchased secondhand. And that’s okay. We teach our daughters to wear what’s “new for me” with pride and happiness. Until the first question comes. Following the compliment, “Your dress is so pretty,” comes the inevitable, “Where did you get it?” That question is inappropriate, not called-for, and not in the spirit of what Yidden strive for: “Mah tovu ohalecha Yaakov.” It puts children (and their mothers) on the spot and makes them feel very uncomfortable, to the point of second-guessing whether they look okay or not. Dear mothers, it is that time of year again! Let’s take a few minutes to sit down with our children and explain to them that complimenting someone’s dress is applaudable; asking where they got it is crossing boundaries. In the zechus of making everyone feel comfortable and happy this yom tov, may we all be blessed with a gmar chasimah tovah and a gut gebentcht yahr! Name Withheld

A TOUCHING KIDDUSH HASHEM During this period of the Yomim Noraim, I wanted to share a touching story of a beautiful kiddush Hashem that I witnessed. During a recent yom tov, I was sitting in the Refuah mobile waiting for our turn. Ahead of me was an entire family of both boys and girls, all of the kids whom were sick. Most of them were diagnosed with strep. After they left, the secretary turned to us and exclaimed, “Can you believe how many kids were there? They were all so quiet and well behaved. And to think they were sick, too? Did you see how the older M&S SHOE REPAIR

Your child is, baruch Hashem, ready to join a playgroup. It is overwhelming for first-time mothers (and every mother!). Here is some advice from the other side of the table. 1. Try to label all of your belongings. 2. Pay on time. There are so many expenses involved. 3. Understand that if your child comes home less clean than she came, she probably had a good time. (And if she comes home with a dirty diaper, remember that it can happen at any time. She was changed.) 4. Do not pick your child up later than closing time; even 5 or 10 minutes late is too much. Please don’t ask for exceptions. Playgroup teachers work hard, and they are not your grandmother or neighbor. 5. Your child is adorable… but so are all the other children. Please don’t keep the staff up during drop-off or pick-up times; if there’s a need to discuss anything at length, ask when would be a good time to call. 6. Therapists will always be accommodated, but please appreciate that it’s quite troublesome for the staff, especially when they have to work their schedule around the appointment. 7. Please be forgiving for any lost or broken items. 8. We are extra-careful, b’ezras Hashem, in regard to the

safety of each and every child, but children can do the unexpected, so please forgive a bite or bump, etc. 9. Dear parents, remember we’re a team with one goal: We want a safe, clean, happy environment for the children, where they can thrive and grow to be ovdei Hashem. Open communication is the key to succeed, so please be in touch (via telephone) when necessary. May Hashem send you siyata d’Shmaya and much nachas. A Playgroup Teacher

RE: PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE (Inbox, Issue 164) As the original letter-writer, I wanted to thank the Monsey resident for the reminder about being dan l’kaf zechus. Likewise, I couldn’t agree more with what Shulamis K. mentioned about mentchlichkeit while shopping. However, I’d like to point out that contrary to having a child hold the line and only later arrive with a bulging shopping wagon or other similar inconsiderable behaviors, the “shoe number system” is an official system in place. In fact, the owner of the particular store I shop at encourages customers to take a number and come back at a later point. I don’t think it would benefit anyone — and with that I include the owner, shoppers both before and after me in line, as well as my own self and family — to have my very active kids spend several hours in a crowded shoe store. The experience is overwhelming enough; I don’t think you want to be in the company of somersaulting, shoe-box toppling, noisy little boys while they wait for their turn. The Original Letter-Writer

GOING INTO YOM KIPPUR, we encounter a paradox. On the one hand, it is a mitzvah to eat and drink on Erev Yom Kippur. Indeed, Chazal say that one who eats and drinks on Erev Yom Kippur is considered to have fasted on that day as well as on Yom Kippur. On the other hand, we are encouraged to begin the fast a few minutes early, on Erev Yom Kippur. For those few minutes, there appears to be a contradiction. After all, we cannot have a mitzvah to eat, drink and fast all at the same time. The Sfas Emes explains this paradox, and in the process, sheds light on the greater meaning and purpose of Yom Kippur. On Yom Kippur, we are able to come as close to Hashem as possible while still inhabiting physical bodies. The ultimate closeness to Hashem occurs when we leave our physical bodies, in Olam Haba. The Mesillas Yesharim writes that we were created “solely to take pleasure in Hashem and to bask in the glory of His Shechinah, for this is the true pleasure and the greatest joy of any that could exist. And the place of this enjoyment is in Olam Haba. As long as we inhabit physical bodies, our ability to come close to Hashem is limited. Our bodies have needs as well as desires, and these present obstacles in our ability to come close to Hashem. A person can save up money for ten years toward a trip to Eretz Yisroel, dreaming of the opportunity to daven at the kever of a particular tzaddik. When she finally ar-

rives at the kever on a sweltering 100-degree summer day, as she cries into her siddur, chances are that her concentration will be interrupted from time to time because the heat is so oppressive. She might even think to spend less time at the kever that day than she had planned, not because she cares more about her comfort than her tefillos, but because her physical needs can be so profound that they drown out her spiritual needs. The halachos of Yom Kippur allow us to take twenty-five hours to put aside our physical needs and desires and immerse ourselves in ruchniyus. That way, we can have the closest taste to Olam Haba while still inhabiting physical bodies. In Olam Haba, we become mevatel to Hashem. It says in Yirmiyahu (17:13), “Hashem mikvei Yisroel — Hashem is the hope of Yisroel.” This pasuk can also be understood to mean that Hashem is the mikvah of Yisroel. Just as a mikvah purifies a person who immerses in it completely, so does Hashem purify us if we nullify ourselves to Him. This can be done by pushing aside our physicality. We see why fasting on Yom Kippur helps us attain closeness to Hashem, but how is this connected to eating and drinking on Erev Yom Kippur? And why do we begin the fast a few minutes early? When we put aside our need to eat and drink to attain closeness to Hashem, our hunger and thirst might interfere. Therefore, we are commanded to eat and drink on Erev Yom Kippur so that our bodies are well satisfied. Furthermore, Rabbeinu Yonah states that since we cannot experience the simcha that comes from a seudas mitzvah on Yom Kippur, we have a mitzvah to be joyful on Erev Yom Kippur through eating and drinking. (Sha’arei Teshuvah 4:9) Now we get to the overlap between Erev Yom Kippur and Yom Kippur. The light of Yom Kippur shines into the moments before Yom Kippur, and as such provides an important transition. If, when we eat and drink on Erev Yom Kippur, we focus ourselves on reaching a state of simcha, then with our bodies satisfied, we can put aside our physical needs, nullify ourselves to Hashem, and experience a taste of Olam Haba. One of the most important aspects of Yom Kippur is teshuvah. What better motivator can there be to do teshuvah than to experience a taste of Olam Haba? Once we feel the simcha of connection and closeness to Hashem, committing ourselves to keeping His Torah follows naturally. Amazingly, this connection starts with having the right intentions as we heartily enjoy our food and drink on Erev Yom Kippur. With our body’s desires satisfied, we can push aside our physical nature so that we can immerse ourselves in Hashem, the mikvah of Yisroel. Perhaps that is why we wish each other an easy fast. Gemar chasimah tovah — and an easy fast.

Time Takes Time Moshe Klein, Holistic Health Practitioner Esther came into my practice with a terrible case of psoriasis. Fire-red rashes crawled up her skin. She’d been battling this skin affliction for as long as she could remember. I employed some health kinesiology practices, and found and began treating the underlying causes. We also discussed nutritional changes she could employ, to cleanse and detox her body. Two sessions into her treatment, she skipped her appointment. When I followed up, she admitted that she felt it was taking too long, she was physically uncomfortable, and she’d returned to prescription medication, which soothes the symptoms but perpetuates the disease. Esther wasn’t ready at that time, which is okay. Sometimes, we’re not. She ended up coming back about five months later, when she was finally ready to take the slower, shorter route. But with my other clients, I like to tell them this: Time takes time. Healing takes time. And it’s okay. The world we humans have created with our infinite impatience is instant. Phones, washing machines, even houses go up in a matter of weeks. But the natural world is a world of waiting. A child grows slowly. If we were to watch it we wouldn’t notice the growth, so minute is every change. But a year later, we know it has happened. A tree grows to fifty feet tall, but it takes several years of cellular level growth to happen. Wounds heal, seasons change. But all at the leisurely pace of our natural world. A disease that has developed from years of neglect will take some time to correct itself. We have spent years eating food detrimental to our health, walking with postures that strain our systems, and pouring chemicals onto our skin. It won’t take as long to fix as it took to destroy, but it will take some time. With patience, we always see remarkable change. To learn more, listen to recorded lectures by Moshe Klein. Cuomo Announces New Safety Initiatives to Protect Schoolchildren With kids heading back to class, safety is once again a high priority, and Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced an increase in statewide patrols to protect children as they travel to and from school. Cuomo said that a one-day enforcement campaign held last April had police issuing more than 850 tickets to drivers who illegally passed stopped school buses whose lights were flashing and stop signs were extended. Drivers who fail to stop for a school bus as required by New York State law face fines ranging up to $1,000 and points on their license, as well as possible suspension of their driving privileges and jail time, depending on the number of offenses committed. In another move to ensure greater safety and prevent drunk driving, the governor also announced legislation that will subject bus drivers to random testing throughout the year. Once the new law goes into effect this winter, bus drivers will not be allowed to consume any alcohol for at least eight hours before their shift starts, an

increase of two hours over the current law. “I urge every driver to take extra precautions now that school is back in session and students are returning to class,” said Cuomo. “The safety of New York’s children is our top priority, and these precautions will keep students safe from harm, prevent traffic violations and hold reckless motorists accountable.” A statement issued by the governor’s office also charged parents with taking extra steps to prevent school bus accidents. Dangling backpack straps, long scarves, loose clothing, and drawstrings that can get stuck in bus doors or railings all pose potential hazards. Additionally, children should be taught never to pick up any dropped items while getting off the bus without the driver’s approval. Children should also be instructed to look both ways when crossing the street, although for greater safety, parents should be waiting for their children at their stop to prevent youngsters from crossing alone.

It’s Not Too Early To Think About Flu Shots, Say Experts While the calendar officially says “summer,” last year’s epic flu season has many people thinking ahead and making plans to get vaccinated early in the hopes of sparing themselves from the dreaded virus. According to the New York State Department of Health, 513 cases of the flu were confirmed in Rockland County last year in the four-month period that began on October 1. The Journal News reported that New York State had more than 128,000 labconfirmed cases of the flu last year, with 23,300 people hospitalized, the worst flu outbreak since 2009. A survey conducted by CVS Health said that 66 percent of American adults get the flu shot every year or intend to get one this year, an increase of 5 percent over last year. The Centers for Disease Control recommends that the flu shot be given to everyone six months of age or older, preferably by October in order to give the shot the necessary two weeks to build immunity against

the virus. For information on the Rockland County Department of Health’s annual flu shot clinics, call 3642534 or 364-2519.

How To Turn Your Diet Failures Into Long-Term Success The big struggle that seems to have a lot of people standing around scratching their heads is health. Specifically… weight. Being as it is the time of the high holidays, specifically Yom Kippur, I thought it would be appropriate to discuss a specific topic that for many, may be their limiting factor. Growing up, Yom Kippur has always been the heaviest day of the year. On Yom Kippur, all of us stand before Hashem and before Him, the book of life. A book of all our deeds. Even those we may have forgotten.

With the holiest of days in mind, we can say that by default we are designed to fall... To fail. One of the most common questions that people ask me is “How much weight can I expect to lose?” The truth is I can not answer that. It entirely depends on each individual and what they want to accomplish. There is one thing I can tell everyone for certain is that along the journey of health there are going to be many times when you “fail”.

weight again. And the cycle repeats itself. If we can just understand that failures are there so we can learn and atone. Failures are our lessons which will help us build the success we want out of life. Now it is all well to write that “failures aren't failure they are just lessons”. But as one client barked at me a year ago… “I would like to see you try and remember all that after you've worked so hard for over a month and have seen no results."

This is part of the process. On this day we own up for all our sins and beg that Hashem wipes them all away granting us a happy year.

But what do we do once we do fail? We throw our hands up and say “Oh well, that diet clearly didn't work.”

While all of this is true and may give this day a heavy feel, recently I heard a slightly different way of looking at Yom Kippur that can really help us in life, especially with our health.

The next logical step from that is to… give up. Then what happens?

It's a wonder to think that a day was pre determined and created in order to atone. We, you and I, are human beings.

The old habit comes back. The old weight and health problems return. Until one day you look at your reflection in the mirror and feel inspired to lose

This can be the most disheartening thing when it comes to your weight loss journey. In all honesty changing the way you look at failure to view them as lessons isn't something that comes overnight. It doesn't even come naturally to us. It is something that you work on. From an early age we've learned that failure makes us look foolish and we should avoid it at all cost.

Over time and with enough practice we can change this belief and understand that in order to grow we need to try new things and get comfortable with being uncomfortable. When we try new things it is only logical that we fail. (Remember trying to walk? Riding a bike? Script writing? Reading?) When we reflect back and ask the right questions like, “What is one thing that I can do differently to help me get closer to my goals?” Create a plan to overcome the next hurdle. The next time a box of cinnabuns are in front of you maybe you will only eat 3 instead of 12. What ever happens is another opportunity to learn. At the Smith System, each client learns what the best step is for them to take now and how to personalize it in to their life. To find out if the Smith System is the right fit for you attuned our next workshop. Details in the ad below.

Cream of Chicken Soup Recipe

104 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 13, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

INGREDIENTS 3 chicken bottoms This is a beautiful soup for yom tov as well as for all winter long. It is smooth and creamy, and its presentation is gorgeous. The mushrooms add a distinctly delicious flavor.

2–3 T. oil 3 Spanish onions 2–3 fresh garlic cloves, crushed (can be substituted with frozen garlic cubes ) 4½ stalks celery, diced 3 zucchinis, peeled and diced 6–8 oz. mushrooms, diced 6 cups water 1 flat T. salt ½ tsp. black pepper 2½ T. flour Roasted button mushrooms (optional)

DIRECTIONS 1. In a 6-quart pot, saute the onion in oil for about 3 minutes. 2. Add the garlic and continue sauteing for about 5 minutes. 3. Add the celery and continue sauteing for an additional 3 minutes. 4. Add the zucchini and mushrooms and continue sauteing for 5 more minutes. 5. Add the rest of the ingredients — except for the chicken — and stir to combine. 6. Place chicken bottoms in a net bag and add it to the pot. 7. Bring to a boil. Then lower the flame and let the soup simmer lightly for 1½ hours. 8. Remove chicken and blend the rest of the soup. 9. Remove chicken pieces from the bones and add to the blended soup. 10. Garnish soup with roasted button mushrooms (optional). Enjoy!

“For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before Hashem.”1 The hopeful words of the pasuk stream through the Yiddishe father’s mind as he prepares for the avodah ahead and the gravity of the day of Yom Kippur, his heart possessed by a pleading hope that he has done everything possible to earn a gut kvittel. True, on Rosh Hashanah Hashem decreed everything that will happen in the coming year, but on Yom Kippur He will sign the decree. Time seems to slow down in the last moments before going to shul for Kol Nidrei, and he reviews a checklist in his mind: “I have done teshuvah before Hashem; I have asked for forgiveness from people; I paid my financial debts; I shlugged kapparos; I ate two seudos with symbolic simanim; I lit a living candle, as well as a yizkor licht for my departed parent.” Now, dressed in his pure white kittel, he readies himself for the special task of bentching his dear kinderlach with the time-honored words of Yaakov Avinu. As the sacred day approaches, with the shefa of Hashem’s Divine benevolence flowing into this world, it is an auspicious time to connect with one’s children and convey to them Hashem’s brachos. The bracha for Erev Yom Kippur includes the Birchas Kohanim. Kohanim are conduits through whom Hashem sends His blessing to rest upon Bnei Yisroel, and fathers are Hashem’s agents who bestow His blessings upon their children.2 Why do fathers bentch their sons to be like Ephraim and Menashe? Yaakov Avinu told his eineklach, Ephraim and Menashe, that Bnei Yisroel would bentch their children in their names when he said, “B’cha yivarech Yisroel leimor…” While bentching their children, fathers are actually doing what Yaakov predicted — or commanded — his descendants to do. What an honor! Menashe and Ephraim grew up in a secular society in Mitzrayim, where the citizens were of very low character, yet they maintained their high level of spirituality and middos. This was despite the lack of morality and ethics in their surroundings, even though there were no other exemplary children like them. Therefore, when fathers say, “May Hashem make you like Ephraim and Menashe,” they can have the kavanah that if at times the beliefs and morals that they raised their children with are challenged by their peers, society or the environment, they are bentching them to have the strength to withstand those pressures and do the right thing.3 Menashe and Ephraim’s father Yosef taught them the Torah and about

the high standards of their zeide Yaakov, and they clung to his teachings. That is why Yaakov considered them his children, saying, “And now, your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Mitzrayim, before I came to you in Mitzrayim, Ephraim and Menashe, will be mine like Reuven and Shimon.”4 What’s more, fathers can daven that each child should be granted Heavenly assistance from Hakadosh Baruch Hu to rise to greatness like Ephraim and Menashe, who were chosen by Yaakov to be his children and have an inheritance in the Holy Land.5 Fathers can advise their children that, while being bentched, they should daven that their tatty’s bracha should persuade Hashem to protect them wherever they go from the influence of places like Mitzrayim, and that they should go meichayil el choyil6 as heilige, ehrliche Yidden. The children should also keep in mind that their tatty is bentching them with the koach and bracha bestowed upon him from Yaakov Avinu himself down through all the generations. During bentching, place both hands on the child’s head so the brachos will be conveyed with all your generosity of spirit and say: For a son: Yesimcha Elokim k’Ephraim v’ch’Menashe For a daughter: Yesimeich Elokim k’Sarah Rivkah Rochel v’Leah This is followed by the words of Birchas Kohanim, and thereafter by a Yehi Ratzon. The entire nusach is found at the beginning of the Yom Kippur machzor. Not only do parents bentch their children Erev Yom Kippur; rebbes may also bentch their chassidim then. Some fathers also have the custom to bentch their children Friday night with the words “Yesimcha Elokim k’Ephraim v’ch’Menashe,” followed by any brachos of their own they wish to bestow upon their children. Some do this after davening, while others say birchas habanim between Kiddush and Hamotzi. THE MONSEY VIEW / 121

If weeks were defined by peanut butter sandwiches and salty tears,

I’d be able to make lunch for half of Monsey and fill a swimming pool with my pain. You see, I began my journey to Yiddishkeit and the life I now lead, as a teenager, full of selfrighteousness and high hopes for the future. Moving to the frumopolis of New York, I thought, would open all doors. I’d prove myself with my knowledge, my wisdom, my piety! Mothers would beg me to marry their sons, I would teach Torah to others just beginning their journeys, and I would eventually settle into some far-off community as the rebbetzin whom everyone would look up to… And then reality set in. Not only was I neither wise nor pious, I was also not destined to become the rebbetzin of a community, or even my own street. And those mothers? Not happening. In fact, the only shidduch I was offered at that time promptly declined when they heard my history. I was lucky, though, because at least a frum employer decided to give me a chance to prove myself. And though some of my naive expectations and attempts at fitting in caused my coworkers to giggle, work was a wonderful environment in which I became close to several amazing women who opened the door to the chassidishe world, just wide enough for me to take a peek. I was blown away by the simple beauty of this new world. It was not only the physical beauty of white, crisp tichlach and regal shtreimlach, but a spiritual beauty as well. It was as if Hashem was right there, being grasped by the outstretched arms of the hosts I watched singing hartzige zemiros on Shabbos. It was the ruchniyus of the weekly Shabbos menu, with each course passed down as a minhag of generations that spoke to me. It was the delicate refinement of the double-covered women I met that made me want to emulate them. It was the cheery-eyed toddlers who were clearly the light of their parents’ lives and the shockingly mature, respectful teens who loved to spend time with, gulp, family, that charmed me. It was the utter otherness of the community, a peek into a world largely untouched by the secular influences of my youth that drew me in, begging me to ask “why?” Why do these wonderful people live like this?

A New year. New beginnings. New opportunities. ‫–סוד האדם‬a New experience of life.

Why are they so different? Why do they have what I want, and what can I do to get it? At that point, I was a single girl, sharing a basement with another single girl, struggling to physically survive, living mostly off hope and inspiration. My trial job paid just enough to cover the rent and afforded me one bag of bread and a jar of peanut butter for the week. (Jelly, too, if I was lucky.) Truth is, there were times I earned a bit more, but that was immediately spent on seforim to broaden my knowledge of what it means to be a Yid. At least my soul was eating. Over time I proved my work capabilities and earned a full-time position, which raised my standard of living to more normative levels. But even when I was busy and surrounded by people, there was loneliness. Everyone had someone who really cared for them, except me. I was so, so alone. Painfully so. I wanted nothing more in the world than a loving family, as I’d never really been blessed with one, even prior to my frum days. And I wanted not just the family I would build with a husband (preferably frum from birth, to fill in the gaps of knowledge I’d always have, to some extent), but I wanted to go back in time, as well, and have a doting mother and father — chassidish, of course. Young girl. Big imagination, aye? But it actually happened, because nothing is beyond the power of tefillah and Hashem’s unlimited capabilities and chesed. I learned this one night, when I returned home from a very moving evening spent listening to shiurim in which the common thread was how a heartfelt prayer can change our lives. I felt as if every speaker had prepared their messages specifically for me. It was exactly what I needed to hear. With a broken heart, I took my Tehillim in hand and poured out my pain. Pages became soaked as a I pleaded with Hashem to change my destiny from that of a destitute, hopeless, futureless girl to one in which I’d blend seamlessly into the chassidishe community — with my frum-from-birth husband and children, of course. “And Tatty,” I said, “nothing is beyond You. You are the Creator of the heavens and stars, the sea and the land, and the animals that roam it. You have created the human and the destiny of man — and nothing is beyond You. So please, Tatty, go beyond the confines of the nature You have created and maintain, and grant me, please, please!, a chassidishe family to teach me what it means to actually be chassidish.”

Everyone had someone who really cared for them, except me. I was so, so alone. Painfully so.

To this day, I have never davened with as much emotion as I davened that night. I woke up the next morning and went to work as usual, but something had changed, and I felt it. I knew open and revealed goodness was on the way. Through a series of events, I ended up finding my “family.” I went from being a girl in a dark hole of a basement to becoming an honorary member of a chashuve family. My new father figure was a dayan, and his widely respected rebbetzin, my female role model. She welcomed me in as if I were their own long-lost child, showering me with attention, gifts, notes of encouragement and their precious time. Four of their children were still at home, unmarried, when I moved in, three of them girls. With their charming help, I developed not only a deeper understanding of the chassidishe world, but the ability to see the spunk of it. I wasn’t the type to smile easily, but through them, I learned that it’s okay to laugh and smile and crack a good joke. More than okay, in fact. Life is to be lived! For me, this was eye-opening. In my upbringing, emotion was largely an expression of self-centeredness. Such as, I don’t like this situation, so I am going to pout/be angry/become furious/take revenge. And jokes? They were usually sarcastic remarks about other people. Everything I’d been exposed to before becoming frum had almost always been about the “I” and rarely about another. Suffice it to say that when I became frum I distanced myself from emotion, believing that the lack of it was the correct path. I viewed Yiddishkeit as actions; this is what halacha says, so this is what we do. Tefillah, of course, was an

outlet of emotion between myself and the Bashefer, because I knew that tefillah is the avodah sheb’lev. But other mitzvos? Those were just actions… Like bentching the children Erev Yom Kippur. When you are new to the heimishe community and read a note in a siddur or a halacha sefer that a father blesses his children, and you have yet to have your own children, you really don’t know how much emotion is in this seemingly simple act. That’s why my life changed when the dayan, who I’d come to know as a tzaddik gamur, approached me Erev Yom Kippur. “I’m covering your head with this tichel,” the rebbetzin told me. “My husband wants to bless you.” With his hands perched in the air above my head — close, but not touching — the dayan mumbled the ancient words with which we bless our children, blessing me to be like Sarah, Rivkah, Rochel and Leah, our holy imahos. And then he began to sob. In between bouts of choking on his tears, the dayan cried out in his gentle, moving voice, “Tatty, bless this child who is without a father, without a mother, for whom we are standing in.” His prayer continued in this vein, invoking Heavenly mercy upon me, begging Hashem to open the floodgates of goodness and shower it down upon me. I, too, began to cry. Here was a simple act performed by an extraordinary man who transformed it into a vessel of deep connection and caring. It was a mitzvah b’shleimus, encompassing feeling, speech and action. I realized then that Yiddishkeit is not a bridge between emotion and mitzvos, two disparate things, because, on the contrary, Yiddishkeit is emotion. Yiddishkeit is feeling the joys and sorrows of other human beings. It is about putting your heart into your action, feeling, lifting your spirit ever higher in the ecstasy of deveikus. It’s about not becoming stuck in the mundane, to do mitzvos by rote. It’s about fine-tuning the instrument of emotion to focus on problems beyond our own daled amos, to truly care for other human beings. Only a few weeks after the dayan bentched me, I had my own personal Yom Kippur. I was a radiant kallah, seated upon a white throne, waiting for my (frumfrom-birth!) chasan to cover my head and face at the badeken. As he approached, flanked by the dayan on one side and my chasan’s grandfather (who stood in place of his deceased father) on the other, I knew my prayers had been accepted. And when Zaidy, a”h, a survivor of Auschwitz who retained his faith — as well as a Yid who pushed through years of losing his job every Shabbos when he came to America, and who completed Sefer Tehillim every day until his last breath — placed his hands above my dek tichel as the dayan had done, I knew I was more than doubly blessed. For though I was a girl without a father, my Tatty had truly bentched me. I am blessed.

When I was 11 years old, my mother and I met someone who claimed to be one of 24 kids. I was enchanted and hoped to achieve that amount of progeny. (However, as motherhood descended in real life, I wasn’t so sure anymore.) As practice for my dream-sized family, I devoted many loving hours to my dolls. My mother’s cleaning lady used to sew dresses galore for my dolly friends, and I lived in a world of Marianne and Susan, my favorite dolls. My mother often wondered whether I was staying up too late dressing them with all their fancy clothes, shoes and accessories, but all these play items were the perfect tools to set my vivid imagination alive and create myself worlds of adventure. My little girls did not walk in their mother’s footsteps. Dolls were not particularly interesting to them, especially not Mommy’s dolls, which I had brought from Canada in perfect condition. I had to save those dolls from getting their hair chopped off or their faces scribbled upon with permanent marker, but the truth is that I was too busy taking care of my real babies to care. As not one of my sweet little girls showed interest in

dolls, when my youngest daughter Racheli requested the expensive Buba Newyorki (also known as a New York doll) — which came with amazing clothes, lifelike hair and tons of accessories — I ignored her request, knowing full well she wouldn’t play with it enough to justify its cost. My determined little girl did not give up so fast, though. While the subject was dropped for a few months, from time to time, requests for a Buba Newyorki would surface. Racheli suggested she have a special star chart in order to acquire the desired doll. I agreed, but nothing became of it. I wasn’t sorry. I still had no interest in investing in a toy that would get minimal use. The request became a statement when I was informed she wanted to have her Buba Newyorki for her birthday. I agreed, hoping she would change her mind by the time her birthday rolled around. I assumed there was a lot of peer pressure regarding Buba Newyorki in her class. One girl had one buba with five dresses. Another girl had two dolls she shared with her sister and a whole box of clothes. And so on and on, I received an accounting of all the Buba Newyorkis in the fourth grade. Of course, no one could beat Ashira. She had a total of seven dolls: three at her home and another four at her grandmother’s home. A few days before Yom Kippur, my daughter Chava decided to check out the new local toy store. She was

hoping they still had Buba Newyorkis available after their grand opening sale. Of course, there were no dolls left, but at that point Racheli couldn’t restrain herself and broke out in sobs that could drown us. I had no will to continue this fight, and allowed the girls to purchase the coveted doll in a different local (but expensive) toy store, with the idea being that we would put the doll away until birthday time. That idea didn’t last long, and soon it was agreed that Sukkos time would be appropriate for a new dolly, making the yom tov even more simcha’dig for one little girl. At this point, Yom Kippur was only one day away. The doll was kept quietly under my bed, but not for very long. The argument started by 9 a.m. “Mommy why can’t I open the doll already?” Racheli said, her sparkling brown eyes pleading. “Because we made an agreement,” I stubbornly insisted. For the next couple of hours, as I prepared the two Erev Yom Kippur meals, the requests and pleas grew stronger, something akin to a train approaching with a loud roar. While on the phone with a friend, she said, “Risa, just let her have the doll. It will keep her busy during Yom Kippur.” There was something to that, and so my resolve began to waver. As I was setting up the first Erev Yom Kippur meal, I decided to convene a beis din. I made my scholarly 16-year-old son the dayan and presented the dilemma to the kids. “Racheli is supposed to get her Buba Newyorki doll for her birthday,” I said, “but I said she could have it to enjoy on Sukkos. However, she would like to have it now.” Binyamin, the presiding judge, was no softy. He started spewing out Gemara terms and held a very strong opinion against giving the doll. I expected Racheli’s sisters to be more supportive of their little sister, but to my surprise, they weren’t. Finally, I spoke as the defending lawyer. “Racheli will enjoy her doll, and she will be happy and cooperative during Yom Kippur, which is only a bonus for me. I do believe Racheli will make a huge effort to be a good girl — not only on Yom Kippur, but overall… right, Racheli?” The sparkly brown eyes nodded vigorously in agreement, and the court case was adjourned, though the dayan just shook his head. My three girls ran over to the doll and briskly separated the doll from her box. As I peeked into the room, there before me were my three girls, ages 18, 14 and Racheli at age 9, stroking the doll’s hair and looking mesmerized. Who would have thought? That Erev Yom Kippur, I am not quite sure who stood on trial — Buba Newyorki, Racheli, her siblings or me, but it seems we all came out with a happy verdict.

With the kids spending all the pre- and post-yom tov days home, and Sukkos right around the corner, now is the perfect time to try this easy, beautiful Sukkah decoration. It is an old craft that my father, z”l, used to make, and while he did so, he’d reminisce about creating it as a young lad. Of course, this version is modernized; it uses the shiny “sukkah-star” paper, and although I prefer to attach the wings with sealing wax like my father did, I use the sealing wax sticks in a glue gun. While you should try to be as precise as possible when cutting the paper, especially the stripes, the beauty of this craft is that minor mistakes are forgiven because they get folded into fanshaped wings.

138 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 13, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

MATERIALS

• At least four (and more if you want) colorful sheets of shiny paper. I used coordinating colors in creating this sample. When using many colors, gold and/or black tie everything together very nicely. • Glue stick • Sealing wax. In the past, it would be melted over a flame. Now sealing wax is available as a candle with a wick, or as a stick that fits into a glue gun (the one I used needs a low-temp glue gun). I find the glue gun the easiest to work with. They are available in craft stores. Sealing wax can be ordered at Nostalgic Impressions (877-645-5325). For those who don’t want to bother with sealing wax, regular glue gun works well, but the end result is prettier when using sealing wax. • Gold spray paint. This is optional, but it strengthens the eggshell body. • A raw egg (and a few more to practice on)

September 13, 2018 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 139 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

DIRECTIONS

Blow out an egg: Gently wash the surface of a raw egg. Using a clean, sharp nail, or the point of a sharp knife, poke a small hole at one end of the egg. With a tooth1 pick inserted into the hole, gently pierce the yolk. You can tell that the yolk is pierced when the toothpick comes out with bits of yolk on it. Poke another, slightly larger hole on the other end of the egg. Holding it over a bowl, gently blow through the smaller hole, until the contents of the egg come out and you have a hollow shell that is ready to become the body of the bird.

Spray the 2 empty eggshell with gold spray paint and allow to dry. For best results, ease a skewer into the hole and hold the egg aloft as you spray. Pierce the other end of the skewer into a piece of foam or an empty egg carton and leave there until paint is dry. (It dries quickly.) Keep the painted eggshell in an empty egg carton until ready to use.

140 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 13, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Cut the papers to size. Please note that the measurements listed here are the measure3 ments I used for the pictured sample, and they work well for two large wings, two smaller wings that get positioned closer to the head, and a long, narrow tail. However, you can make them bigger or smaller. • Cut two 10”x14” pieces from one color for the larger wings. • Cut two 6½”x10” pieces from another color for the smaller wings. • Cut two 6”x11” pieces from a third color for the tail.

The best way to store these fragile birds is in a flat box. A bakery donut box works well TIP for one bird, and a large, clean pizza box is perfect for storing two birds.

4

Using the pictures as suggestions, cut strips of coordinating or contrasting colors and glue them onto the rectangles.

FOR THE LARGER WINGS (silver), use 14-inchlong strips. You can cut them into varying widths and amounts, and layer a narrower on a wider for more interest. I cut two strips, one wider than the other, for each wing. When ready, glue them onto the rectangle. FOR THE SMALLER WINGS (gold), use 10-inch-long strips. Here, I started with a strip that was 1Âź inches wide (maroon), and then cut another narrower half-inch strip (blue), which I glued onto the wider strip. I also used another strip (black) for the design. Make sure your two wings are identical. FOR THE TAIL, I like to crisscross different colors of paper strips. Before folding the tails along the 11-inch side, cut off some of the top in a rounded shape to get a nicely shaped, long, narrow tail.

5

Fold each paper, as pictured, to form fans.

6

Bend in the end of each fan. This bended-in piece will be glued to the egg.

September 13, 2018 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 141 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Using a generous amount of seal7 ing wax, attach the tail to the bottom of the egg, the large wings at the sides of the egg, and the smaller wings toward the top of the egg, one at each side. (Make sure that the sides with the designs face the top when you work.)

Cut a long piece of string (for hanging) whose length is double the distance 8 you want the craft to be from the s’chach. Position the bird so that the designs are face-down, and attach the string to the center of the egg. This will ensure that the design will be visible from below when the bird is hanging in the sukkah.

I usually wait for Motzei Yom Kippur to put the finishing touches to the head. Using a piece of the beeswax that is left from the Yom Kippur candle, I soften it in boiling water and shape it into a small head, which can then be attached to the egg with some sealing wax. A piece of wax from an old havdalah candle or any beeswax candle will serve the same purpose. As a finishing touch, stick cloves on either side to serve as eyes. 9

According to the laws of physics, white is not an actual color; rather, it is the result of light being fully reflected and scattered. Paradoxically, while white only appears when all three colors of light (red, blue and green) are reflected and present, it is, in essence, achromatic, which means that it has no hue.

In marketing, white reflects cleanliness, simplicity and sophistication, and in room design, it creates the impression of space. Spacious all-white rooms, however, need to be designed cleverly to avoid feelings of cold aloofness.

COLOR PSYCHOLOGY Since white is simply light, with no details or distractions to it, it has mostly positive connotations, symbolizing purity, innocence and freshness. Because of these subtle meanings of the color, white is used worldwide to reflect goodness and perfection. IN THE U.S. FLAG

IN THE MEDICAL WORLD

While there is no early record of the what the colors on the U.S. flag symbolize, Charles Thomson, who was Secretary of the Continental Congress while it existed during the time of the American Revolution, spoke about the colors when he stated the meanings of the same colors as present on the U.S. seal. As Thomson explained the seal, “The colors of the pales (the vertical stripes) are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness and valor, and Blue, the color of the chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice.

Hospitals and other medical facilities take advantage of white to convey feelings of calm and cleanliness. While scientists of old wore beige coats, the white medical coat was introduced in the late 19th century to create the impression of sterility and cleanliness and to inspire hope for recovery.

146 / THE MONSEY VIEW

IN SCHOOL UNIFORM In several South American countries, as well as in Spain and Morocco, white coats that look almost like medical coats are worn by both teachers and students in many public elementary schools to symbolize learning.

IN THE FEATHER OF COWARDICE Based on the belief that a rooster with white feathers in his tail is a coward and “chicken,” if you will, a white feather has been used to symbolize cowardice in the face of war. In Britain during the two world wars, white feathers were handed to young men who were afraid to enlist to go fight. Contrarily, the white feather has also been used to symbolize peace. The source for this interpretation is the tale of an Indian who hung a white feather on the door of a Quaker meeting house to declare them friends.

IN THE FLAG OF DEFEAT

IN THE PICKET FENCE

The white flag is recognized worldwide as the flag of truce and also surrender and defeat, since it’s the weaker party who wants to negotiate. According to the rules of war, those carrying the white flag are neither allowed to fire their weapons nor be fired upon by the opposing side.

An icon of those living the American dream, the white picket fence of the mid-20th century symbolized the peaceful living of middle-class folks living in a nice house in a nice suburban neighborhood, along with all the success and prosperity that the dream represented.

The concept of white has strong enough connotations that the word has earned its place in plenty of idioms and expressions. A LITTLE WHITE LIE means a small lie that appears harmless and may effect an outcome that is for the greater good. In contrast, a black lie is simply a lie, where only the liar benefits while other parties may be hurt.

A WHITE ELEPHANT is the term used for an asset or venture that one cannot get rid of, and instead of proving itself useful and profitable, exists at a prohibitive cost to the owner. Where does this term originate? In Southeast Asia, monarchs very highly prized white elephants (which are actually more of a pinkish color) due to the concepts white represents. However, problems arose when pleased monarchs would gift valued subjects with white elephants — which weren’t allowed to be put to work! Instead, the elephants would only drain their owners financially due to the huge cost of maintaining such a large, but useless, animal.

The chocolate factory is about to fall apart. I must stop my sabotage before they suspect me.

I can’t fulfill their request.

I gave you lots of cash. Wait a bit. I can’t finish them off in one shot. They’ll catch us all.

Gavriel, it’s me. The missionary head.

You must understand! The anti-missionary organization is after us! We must fly them to Germany!

How do I get out of this? On one hand, I want to help the competing chocolate factory fund the missionaries, but on the other hand, I don’t want this deception revealed.

Oy, it’s dangerous for us to be seen together!

We posted men on the roof to be able to track all the anti-missionary organization’s activities, and to delay their trip until we escape with the children.

Recap: Seeing that Zurich police might back out of the operation, Avraham’s father, the head of the anti-missionary organization, thinks it’s time to fly to Zurich.
