THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTER (Re: The Smart of the Deal, Issue 161) I believe that many salespeople in Monsey took offense with your article about customer service. The message that came across was that we, the salespeople, are here only to service you, the customer, and for no other reason. And as such, customers are entitled to treat us as they wish, and we are to run around the store to heed their bidding. Customers should take into account that salespeople are human as well, and that we work extremely hard to make them happy. We are on our feet the entire day. The work is strenuous and involves dealing with so many goods and then sometimes with not-so-nice customers, too. This week, please feature what happens at the other side of the counter: Let customers know that they should hang up clothing after trying something on and not leave it all over the floor. Tell them not to eat their lunch in dressing rooms or have a saleslady run back and forth and dress their child. Explain how it’s erev yom tov/school/Shabbos in our homes as well and just as an overwhelming time for us. And perhaps, after a salesperson has helped a customer and has given her many options, know that a thank you is in order, whether the customer walks out with something or not. I was upset enough to take my very short Sunday lunch break (it’s

after 5:00 p.m., mind you) to write this letter and hope that the issue will be addressed in the coming week’s paper. Thank you, A Local Saleslady RUCHY REESE RESPONDS: Dear Local Saleslady, Having been on the other side of the counter for many years, as both an employee and as a storeowner, before settling into a writing position, I understand you well. It is hard to be on one’s feet all day, and it is hard to run around the store, and it is hard to deal with irate customers. But it is part of the job. Salespeople actually are hired only to service the customer. And, as in any business, personal pressures must be left at the door. Internal pressures, however, exist in every job. There are challenges and requirements in which some employees excel, while others struggle. This is the nature of life. As Yidden, we hope our customers understand that workers need to be treated with dignity and that they must respect both people and property. Eating lunch in a fitting room is never okay. Throwing merchandise on the floor is never okay. But asking for — and expecting — help is okay, and a customer should never be made to feel other-

wise. Customers should be aware that during hectic times they may get less help. (But a pleasant apology from the salesperson should always accompany the inability to help!) Yes, to be a great salesperson, the standards are high. And that is why Sales Superstars are being nominated throughout Monsey. The job is not easy, but those who excel deserve our thanks and recognition. Hope to see you nominated!

A MRSA MIRACLE After we consulted with several doctors and treated her with strong antibiotics, my daughter’s temperature spiked and her MRSA infection was only getting worse. It came to a point that my doctor, not wanting to take responsibility, said that I should admit her to the hospital within 24 hours. Someone suggested that I contact Rabbi Meisels from the Wound Healing Gemach and see if he could help. The transformation was miraculous. With such tenderness, he applied creams and oils and powders to soften my daughter’s skin. He did it in such a gentle and kind manner that my daughter, who had been traumatized by the ordeal and refused to let anyone touch her, was relaxed while he cleaned and treated the site. So patiently, he guided us with advice for dealing

with the MRSA and preventing it from returning. It was a tremendous chesed. Baruch Hashem, each day showed significant healing. For those of you who are dealing with a similar situation, Rabbi Meisels can be reached at 347-374-0985. Mrs. K.

RE: A GREAT GUIDE (Inbox, Issue 161) To the letter-writer requesting listings of organizations and gemachim: Your idea is great! In fact, the founder of Chaverim had this very idea, which led him to found an organization called “Chasodim of Rockland.” They have a comprehensive database of all organizations and gemachim (and much more). They can be reached at 845-426-5555. Speaking of great customer service, the volunteers who pick up the phone for Chasodim of Rockland are so kind and helpful. They should be gebentcht. Thank you for a great magazine. R.W.

In the green pages of the Business Directory, you can find a listing of organizations, plus a lot more. A Reader

Parshas Ki Seitzei

By: Malka Schneps

“ZISSY, DID YOU SEE WHAT MALKY WAS wearing last night?” said Devorah into the phone as she measured a cup of flour into the mixer. Every week, she baked challah for Bikur Cholim, just like her mother. “Look, I don’t want to be mean, of course, but she should have a little more seichel. That dress wouldn’t look good on a thin woman, let alone her.” Devorah measured another cup of flour and dumped it into the mixer. “I mean, everyone should dress according to how they look, right? I’m just saying she should be more realistic. That isn’t lashon hara, right?” Devorah added a teaspoon of salt, and then said, “Zissy, let me call you back in just a few minutes. I have to turn the mixer on.” Devorah always chatted on the phone while she baked challah for Bikur Cholim. It was a great way to keep in touch with her friends while she accomplished an important job. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Devorah’s sister Miri was also baking challah for Bikur Cholim while talking on the phone. “Chaya, did you hear? The Best Dressed Children’s Shop is having a mega sale!” exclaimed Miri as she added a cup of flour to the mixer. “Didn’t you just say you need something new for your little Chany?” Miri measured another cup of flour into the mixer, whispering, “L’kavod Shabbos Kodesh.” “Of course you still have time to catch the sale. The sale runs through Sunday. But don’t waste time either. You have to get over there while they still have good clothing left.” Miri added a teaspoon of salt to the mixer and then said, “Listen, Chaya, can I call you back in a few minutes? I need to turn on my mixer now.” Miri hung up the phone, whispered an additional tefillah for the cholim, and then turned on the mixer. Miri always chatted on the phone while she baked challah for Bikur Cholim — just as her mother had done. It was a great way to keep in touch with her friends while she performed an important mitzvah. It says in this week’s parsha, “Lo yavo Amoni u’Moavi bikahal Hashem… — An Amonite or Moabite shall not

80 / THE MONSEY VIEW

enter the assembly of Hashem; even to the tenth generation, they shall never enter the assembly of Hashem. Because they did not greet you with bread and water on the way when you left Mitzrayim…” (Devarim 23:45). It is very cruel to refuse to give water to thirsty people in the desert. The behavior of the people of Amon and Moav demonstrated a complete departure from the hachnosas orchim displayed by Lot. In contrast, Lot risked his life in Sodom to take in guests. How could his descendants have taken such a drastic turn from their ancestor’s ways? The Melitz Yosher answers that when a person does chesed because he recognizes the importance of the mitzvah and he genuinely wants to help others, then it will become ingrained in his descendants for many generations. However, if doing chesed is merely a habit, then it will not be ingrained in his descendants. As we know, Lot only excelled in performing the mitzvah of hachnosas orchim because he grew up in the home of Avraham Avinu and Sarah Imeinu. When Lot grew up and established his own home, he did the mitzvah of hachnosas orchim, but only out of habit. Thus, his descendants strayed far from his ways. The fictional story above shows how two people can do the same mitzvah, but one does it out of habit while the other does it with sincerity. The story goes one step further, as both sisters grew up in the same home with the same mother who did this mitzvah each week. As we can see, one sister is now doing the mitzvah out of habit, but the other sister is putting her heart into it. This shows that even if someone grew up in a home where they learned to do a mitzvah, they can still own the mitzvah by investing their all in it. As we approach Rosh Hashanah and make a cheshbon hanefesh, it is time to reflect on which mitzvos we may be doing out of habit. If we identify any such mitzvos, we now have the opportunity to take ownership of the mitzvah by pouring our heart into it and choosing to do the mitzvah out of love rather than habit. That way, we can take the mitzvos we already do and make them new, and at the same time ensure they get engraved into our future generations. In this zechus, may we be engraved in the Sefer Hachaim. Kesivah v’chasimah tovah!

President’s Son Responds to Balloon from Girls Camp It is an annual rite of summer at many a camp: writing a note and stuffing it inside a balloon that is then filled with helium and set free to soar up high, drifting off to destinations unknown, where maybe, just maybe, someone may find the note and write back. Occasionally campers get a response to the activity, but this summer, one camp received a response from an unlikely source: President Donald Trump’s son, Eric. The Lakewood Scoop reported that girls at a camp sent off their balloons approximately three weeks ago, filling them with small items, lights and letters before releasing them into the nighttime sky. One balloon landed more than 25 miles away on the grounds of a Briarcliff Manor golf course in Westchester, where it was spotted near the fifth hole by Eric Trump. Popping the balloon, Trump found a handwritten note and de-

cided to respond with a surprise of his own: a package containing a business card and some Trump t-shirts and hats. The package also contained a note that read: “Dear Rivky, I was walking up the 5th hole of Trump National Westchester when I saw a red balloon. I grabbed the balloon to throw [it] away, but realized there was a note inside. I popped the balloon to find a nice handwritten note from you! I hope you had a great time at camp and are getting ready to start a successful school year. Please enjoy these t-shirts and let me know if you are ever in New York City — I would love for you to visit Trump Tower. Best wishes, Eric Trump.” Unsure if the package was a hoax, the camp administrator

called the number on the business card, which was answered by Trump, and the two shared a brief conversation discussing a potential Trump visit to the camp. The camp’s administrator said that the package from Eric Trump was the talk of the camp. “The whole camp went crazy,” said the administrator. “They all wanted to see it. There was a lot of excitement.”

Palisades Parkway Police Chief Resigns A difficult year for the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department has culminated in the resignation of its chief, who was placed under arrest by detectives from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office two weeks ago. Chief Michael Coppola tendered his resignation by email last Wednesday, reported The Journal News. The 43-year-old Totowa resident did not specify the reason for his resignation, but Jim Hall, executive director of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, which oversees the PIPPD, said that he sus-

pected that Coppola’s firing was imminent. Sergeant Jock Watkins of the PIPPD will fill in for Coppola until a permanent replacement can be named. Coppola had been hit with a 90-day suspension in July after a months-long investigation of the PIPPD revealed a litany of wrongdoings that took place under his command. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office found that officers failed to follow proper procedure during police chases, illegally provided incentives to officers who wrote the

most tickets and failed to properly investigate officers who had been charged with misconduct. According to VIN News, numerous Jewish drivers complained that they had been targeted by the PIPPD over the years, including Hatzoloh drivers who were pulled over while transporting patients to the hospital. In another incident that took place in 2016, a Chaverim member who stopped to help someone change a flat tire in a Palisades Parkway gas station was given a ticket because he was not a Parkway-approved service provider.

Is "Diet Food" Making You “Tell me what I’m doing wrong. “The night is my weakness. It is the time of day when I have cravings and eat. So instead of having all the junk I started having two diet ices that are worth 20 calories each. “Is there anything wrong with that?” The truth is from a calorie perspective there is nothing wrong with this. 20 calories by itself wont hold you back. From a humanistic perspective this wa y may potentially lead to short term gains but long term failure. Let’s go through why this may be.

Fat?

What we have created is a culture that has necessity confused with luxury. This leaves us feeling: - Stressed out. - Overworked (mentally & physically). - Tired. When it comes to the end of the day- to the late night binge, the last thing you want to be doing is think about what you can and cannot eat. You just want to be able to release all the stress. Do what you want to do.. Eat what you feel li ke.. From here we can see that the food itself isn't the issue. It is the lack of control when it comes to the foods we eat.

We as humans have a limited amount of At this point you might be thinking this is obvious. resources (time, money, energy, patience etc) that You don't need to be a genius to know that we is available to us. have a control issue. The fact that I am going for "diet foods" is me practicing my control! In order to be able to live our life we have to use shortcuts to help us make routine decisions As logical as this may sound, we have the wrong (habits) allowing us to allocate all our resources to idea of what control is. the things we want. Although goi ng for "diet foods" is practicing some Since the industrial revolution beginning in the level of control it isn't the type of control you lates 1700, society has groomed us into believing require when aiming for long term success. that abundance is good. By substituting the junk food for “diet food” what Your stature is based on the amount of money you have essentially done is taken one addiction you make. and swapped it for a slightly better one. Notice we aren't even mentioning the contents of This has us believing that one of the most these "diet foods" regarding our health just the act important things in the world is making money. of replacing the usual junk for a shiny new label. The more the better. Cravings are addictions. Don't get me wrong. I understand that you need to make money to pay your bills. We need to make As long as you are on the “diet” you will control money to survive. yourself to go for the "diet foods". This makes it even mor e difficult for any counterargument. We tell ourselves that I need to make this money so I can pay my bills.

As soon as the feeling of “I’m on a diet” goes away (it always does) the previous addictions return.

But in all honesty if you have 4 walls with a roof, clothes for the family (don't need a new wardrobe every season) and food on the table you are living the dream of 80% of the world's population.

You will still eat the low calorie ices. After all they taste ok and there are 3 boxes in your freezer. We can't let them go to waste, we tell ourselves. After a while these low calorie ices doesn't quite hit the spot. The craving is still there.

Too stressed out and tired by the day, you continue on mindlessly looking for something that will hit that spot. When it comes time to the scale you only remember the diet ices. You are convinced that you stuck to the plan yet the weight is still not moving. "Forget about everything I might as well eat whatever I wan t." Once you come to the realization that even though we are living in the age of technology - the age of efficiency; When it comes to nature. THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS. THERE IS NO WAY OF BEING EFFICIENT. At the end of the day you have to put in the work. You have to practice control. The moment you realize that there is no shortcut to health is the moment you will start to achieve long term health . As long as you believe that there is a shortcut the next ad you see that promises you quick and easy results will be your next diet on your yo-yo string. I mean why not? ... It might work ... You know as well as I do. These “programs” claim to help you lose the initial weight and then you will go to a maintaining program. That happens almost never. 95% of people end up back where they started. Freezer Fillers By: Leah Stern Photo credit: C. Tarkieltaub I’m not into fancy side dishes during the year, but l’kavod Sukkos I do like to tap into some creativity and present new culinary creations. All of these dishes are upgraded versions of standard dishes and can be simplified if you are limited in kitchen gadgets or time. Most side dishes, with the exception of potatoes, freeze pretty well — the key is warming them up the right way. Setting your oven to a low temperature is usually the best method for rewarming. For those who use a hot plate or blech, place your pans of food into a deeper pan filled with about two inches of water, and place Ball jar cover rings into the water to elevate the food pans. This slow and steady reheating will get your food warmed up easily, without those disappointing charred bottoms.

Triangular Crepes This presentation will award you a standing ovation, and the taste won’t disappoint either. Make sure not to overheat these when warming up, because edges will dry and curl and blintz will not stand up. To create the square crepes, I used an 11-inch eco-friendly griddle pan, available at Auction Mart. The leaves cooked evenly and flipped over beautifully on the smooth surface.

CREPES

FILLING

Yields 6–7 11-inch leaves

Orange

Dash of white pepper Green

2 cups flour

1 Spanish onion, diced

1½ Spanish onions, diced

1½ cups seltzer

3 oz. oil

4 oz. oil

½ cups water

1 red pepper

8 oz. frozen peas

5 eggs

1 large carrot

8 oz. frozen string beans

3 oz. oil

1 small sweet potato

4 loose potatoes

1 tsp. sugar

4 potatoes

1 clove garlic

½ tsp. baking powder

1 clove garlic

2 tsp. salt

½ tsp. salt

2 tsp. salt

Dash of white pepper

94 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 22, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

CREPES DIRECTIONS 1. Blend all ingredients until smooth. 2. Heat oil in griddle pan until hot. Wipe excess oil with a napkin. 3. Pour approximately ž cup of batter onto the griddle and tilt to distribute evenly over pan. 4. Fry until brown spots appear, flip blintz over and fry second side. (A wide spatula works very well for flipping.)

FILLING DIRECTIONS To simplify preparation, instructions for both fillings are together. 1. Saute onions in oil. Remove a little more than half and reserve for green filling. 2. Using a food processor, finely chop pepper, carrot and sweet potato. Add to onion and saute for about 20 minutes. 3. Peel and cube all potatoes. Place in a pot with water and garlic. Place vegetables for green filling in a mesh bag and cook all of it together for 20 minutes. Remove mesh bag and finely process the green vegetables and add to the reserved onion. 4. Continue cooking the potatoes until soft. Spill most of the water and mash until soft and very finely mashed. Add salt and pepper. 5. Divide potatoes in half. Mix orange vegetables into one half and green vegetables into other half.

ASSEMBLY Each pie uses 3 crepes. 1. Lay one crepe on a flat surface, and spread half of orange filling onto it. Cover with another crepe and spread rest of orange filling over it. Place a third crepe over it. 2. Repeat directions with green filling and another 3 crepes. You will now have two square blintz pies. 3. Cut away the edges for a smooth edge. Using a ruler, cut each square into 16 2.5-inch squares. 4. Cut each square in half to form 2 triangles. (Each corner square will only result in one perfect triangle; the outer half will be a bit rounded.) 5. Serve with sauteed onions and mushrooms.

Zucchini Quiche Cups Most yom tov side dishes are carb-laden. This specialty consists of mostly vegetables. These quiches look more complicated than they are. I usually use small zucchinis, but for this recipe, I selected the widest squash available. The melon baller used for this recipe is inexpensive and available at Auction Mart.

INGREDIENTS 1 Spanish onion, diced 5 cups of scooped out zucchini 1 red pepper, diced 1 cup julienned or shredded carrots 1½ cups sliced mushrooms 2 eggs 3 heaping T. mayonnaise 3 T. cornstarch 2 tsp. salt ½ tsp. white pepper

96 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 22, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

DIRECTIONS 1. Peel zucchini (I used a julienne peeler), and slice into 2.5-inch chunks. Use a melon baller to scoop out most of the flesh from each slice while leaving the bottom intact. 2. Saute all vegetables for approximately 1 hour. Allow to cool a bit, and then mix with the rest of the ingredients. 3. Fill squash shells with mixture, and bake on 350° for 40–50 minutes, or until set.

The silicone pans are available at Auction Mart.

DIRECTIONS INGREDIENTS 1 pound medium noodles

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 large onion

2½ T. kosher salt

¼ cup oil

½ tsp. white pepper

1 red pepper 1 yellow pepper 1 orange pepper 5 mushrooms

1. Cut onion in half. Slice thinly and saute in oil for 15 minutes. 2. Slice peppers into 2-inch strips, dice mushrooms and add to onion. Cook for 20 minutes. 3. Cook noodles and drain, but do not rinse with cold water. 4. Mix with vegetables and rest of ingredients. 5. Bake on 375° for 15 minutes. Cover with foil and lower oven to 350°. Bake for an additional 20 minutes. 6. Turn over pans to remove squares while still hot.

The brain is a marvelous thing. In only its first year, a baby’s brain doubles in size, and then continues developing at an astonishing pace. According to the National Institutes of Health, between the ages of 6 and 10, the brain shows increasing cognitive performance, and then continues to “race to wire itself” for another few years. Rapid brain development means an explosion of new ideas, deeper comprehension and growing skills. It is during these formative years that the mind is most receptive to new information, and as parents, we can recognize that thirst for knowledge in the form of a child’s endless (and often annoying!) stream of questions and fascination with the world around them. The more we push the walls of their world outward, the more knowledge a child will absorb and the deeper his brain will be taught to think. Here are a few ways that you, as a parent, can harness your child’s inborn curiosity and wonder. This year, gift your child with expanding horizons and the thrill of knowledge and discovery.

Geography As a child grows past preschool age, they gain an awareness of the enormity of the planet we live on. They will know that some countries can only be reached by plane or ship because there’s water in between. They may also know the concept of a time difference, and that family members in Eretz Yisroel are likely sleeping by the time kids here come home from school. They’re probably also aware of the fact that some people are from foreign countries, and that the languages spoken are more than the three or four they’re

familiar with. But there are still a lot of gaps in that knowledge, and for the thinking child, a whole lot of questions. Hanging a colorful and eyecatching map on your playroom wall (A) and choosing fun and educational map toys (B) will turn playtime into learn-time and abstract ideas into concrete images. See your child’s face shine when they know where home is on the map! Another great hands-on option is purchasing a globe for your child’s desk. Your child will now understand what it

means for the world to be round and why we need to travel to Europe by plane! Also available are talking globes that, while more pricey, teach children all about our planet in an interactive way. The globe featured here (C) is packed with interesting facts, questions and challenges, and touch-and-explore options that will keep children entertained — and learning! For older kids, board games like Great States (D) or Game of the States (E) offer exciting playtime that broadens their minds without them even noticing.

History When it comes to history, there’s a grand world of resources out there, and the key to this one lies in reading the right books. Whether they’re picture books about gedolim or historical fiction for tweens, every book set in a certain era brings history alive in the most wonderful way. To get a taste of American history, trivia games like BrainBox: US Presidents (A) or Professor Noggin’s Presidents of the United States (B) can be enormously fun to play. (It is worthwhile to note that both these games come in very many other versions, on topics like geography, math, etc.)

Basic Math Skills (for younger kids)

For the very young child who is learning to recognize numbers and understands that the concept of “two” or “three” is reflected in an actual numeral, The Learning Journey Match It! - Counting (A) is a great buy. Once your child is comfortable with the logic behind numbers, it’s time to up his speed by playing these fun family games. Clumsy Thief in the Candy Shop (B) is one winner that has kids adding up their cards of candy so that every pile equals 20. But thieves may come calling to snatch them! (Note: There’s a more difficult version for children ready to add up to 100.) Another great game, Learning Resources tri-

FACTa Addition and Subtraction Game (C), reinforces the relationship between three numbers and shows how adding and subtracting work hand in hand. (This is also available in another version for kids who are ready to multiply and divide.) Learning Resources Money Bags Coin Value Game (D) is another great game that improves coin counting skills. Collect and exchange money fast to get to the finish line! But logic and reasoning go further than math skills. For younger kids, Balance Beans (E) is a fantastic choice that’ll sharpen their balance skills and teach them all about the seesaw of equations.

STEM

(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math; for older kids)

B: Laser Maze

C: Swish

D: KiwiCo

To get older kids’ brains sharp and fast, try a game like Gravity Maze (A), an award-winning STEM toy that will build spatial reasoning and planning skills. Another option by the same brand would be Laser Maze (B), another winner for older kids. Also nice are simple logic card games like Swish (C) to see how how fast kids’ brains respond to being teased! For those willing to spend a little more, KiwiCo offers science project subscriptions geared for different ages (D). Once signed up, a package arrives to the door each month containing a DIY science kit (adult supervision required; that means great quality time!) that will leave your child with a tremendous sense of pride in what he or she can create! And it builds great skills, as well! Taken at another angle, biology and the human body

are also topics that are both fascinating and relevant for our children. Your Walking, Talking Body (E) by Rabbi Yeshaya Perlow (published by The Judaica Press, Inc.) is a wonderful book that is geared for children and explores their bodies alongside sweet pictures and illustrations. Based on the teachings of Rav Avigdor Miller, it is a worthwhile purchase for every home. Another book worth mentioning is Feldheim’s EncycloKIDia (F), an encyclopedia for Jewish children that is packed with fascinating pieces of information.

Language Skills From the moment they’re born, children are learning the patterns of speech and conversation and how to form words. Never care for your infant in silence! Repeat key words, again and again, five times, twenty times, a hundred times, and after a few months, the comprehension in your baby’s eyes will show you how many concepts and ideas your constant cooing and talking planted in their minds. But why stop when the child learns to talk? Little two- and three-year-olds can learn how to rhyme (even if the words are nonsense half the time!), and why limit their vocabulary to one adjective per description? After all, something that’s “good” can just as well be “amazing,” “fabulous” or even “unbelievable.” And why should little toddlers only be told they’re “cute”? Aren’t they also “adorable,” “huggable” and so very “mature”? Such skills are easy to teach, and if you consciously make a decision to keep their little minds learning, those skills will only grow along with them. Here are some games for kids who are a little older (and a lot older) so that they can keep their skill set sharp. For little kids who are learning to spell, see Learning Resources Pop for Sight Words Game (A) (also available in another version for simple alphabet recognition), which makes it tons of fun to read. Collect cards you can read, but if you pick a POP card, they all go back in the box! The Learning Journey’s Match It! - Letters (B) is another great choice, and for kids who are a little older, the same brand makes another version called Match It! - Rhyme (C). For older kids, games like Blurt! (D) of hilarious word recall takes word fun to the next level. Then there are games like award-winning Play on Words (E) and Think Fun Word A Round Game (F) that are always great choices as well. Of course, it would be remiss to neglect mentioning books here. Books, books, books! Need I say more?

110 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 22, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Today, with the selection at Jewish bookstores a treat for the eyes, there’s something for everyone. For little kids, anything that sparks their imagination and teaches them about the world is a sure winner. Extra points for repetition in the text! For older kids, keep pushing their sights to bigger and better, because there’s no greater way to expand a child’s mind than with a book.

No one enjoys spending one of the last precious summer days standing in a long line on “nit-checking” day. But after listening to tales of bygone days, we should be grateful for the incredible system our schools have set up to keep lice and nits at bay. In fact, they’re helping us keep our children lice-free. Aside for being one of the longest English words, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, commonly known as DDT, is an agricultural pesticide. DDT is outlawed in many states because of its harmful effects on the environment, wildlife and human

118 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 22, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

health. If you were a child in the ‘60s, you might remember the “mosquito trucks” that went around spraying this colorless and odorless DDT spray to keep mosquitoes — and lice! — at bay. The kids ran after the

truck, enjoying the free sprinkler, blissfully unaware of its effects, as harmful chemicals were sprayed straight into the faces of innocent children. Some in Monsey even recall the time when those lousekilling chemicals were sprayed via helicopter during an infestation of epidemic proportions. How times have changed. Who can imagine such a harmful chemical being sprayed liberally for lice today? Almost as ridiculous as being sprayed with DDT, Mrs. M. remembers being treated for a lice epidemic as a camper in the early ‘70s. There, the camp mother would hold a large squirt bottle of kerosene and spray a liberal amount on each girl’s hair to treat the lice. Maybe the fact that all girls smelled so badly and had oil dripping from their hair ensured that they didn’t touch one another, so maybe that’s what stopped the lice from spreading, because kerosene doesn’t kill lice. At most, it’s an oldwives’ tale, and a desperate camp chose to believe it. But by now, even DDT wouldn’t help much, as most species of head lice fall under the category of super lice. Like the growing number of

superbugs, most species of lice have become resistant to all the lice-killing chemical pyrethrins found in OTC pharmaceutical products. Years of overuse and abuse have made them smarter than these chemicals. (Who remembers NIX — that magical lice-killing agent that had a list of possible side effects that caused me terrible nightmares?) So what is the proper way to get rid of a lice infestation? A lice infestation is not a sickness, but if you or your child has ever been afflicted, you know how sickening it feels. Lice and nits are not signs of neglect or a dirty home. The only way to contract lice, researchers agree, is to have direct contact with another infested child. Or dogs. Although many researchers say that you can’t catch nits from a dog, Mrs. S.’s experience proves otherwise. She recounts, “One summer, we went up to the Catskills with a yeshivah. We were assigned a house on the same block as the yeshivah’s bungalow colony, but it was in a horrible condition. The only thing we saw was hair. The couches, floors, tables and chairs were full of dog hair. We vacuumed and swept, but the hair seemed to be embedded in the place. Apparently the house belonged to a family with dogs. “We were stuck for three whole weeks of misery. The first week, no one sat on the couches. But by the time the second week rolled around, we kind of made peace with the fact. “But the misery wasn’t over yet. From the minute we got home, my scalp itched and itched. I remember my mother sighing in frustration, ‘I should just shave all this hair off.’ After two weeks of NIX, margarine, dishwashing soap and endless combing, Makkos kinim didn’t seem like such a foreign concept. I also thought shaving

What Are Lice? Head lice are wingless insects that spend their entire lives on the human scalp and feed exclusively on human blood. Nits are the eggs of a louse. They are white, resembling dandruff. They measure 0.8 millimeters long, and cling to hair follicles where they are difficult to remove. They hatch within one to two weeks.

August 22, 2018 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 119 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

might be a good idea.” With lots of kids often touching heads in schools and camps, that’s where the spreading of lice is most rampant. For decades, schools and camps have tried to have nit-free zones, and the methods varied. Years ago, the school nurse would simply shave all the infested hair. That method worked. It was quick. It was neat. It was easy. But it still doesn’t tempt many. Schools, at one point, have tried sending home infested students, but it took many years for an organized system to be put in place. I spoke to Mrs. D., likely the first woman in Monsey to step up to the challenge and create a school system for combating the issue. About 25 years ago, her child had nits. The school wasn’t equipped to deal with it, and being proactive, she knew all her work would be for naught if there was an infestation in the class or school. Until then, checking students for nits was a purely voluntary activity. Mrs. D. realized that to have a NoNit policy in school, a system had to be put in place. Over the years, she has developed and fine-tuned a system and set an example for schools all over. In fact, city schools often ask her for advice, since the camp administrations realized that the girls coming from “her” school had the least cases of infestation. One of the most basic parts of her program was designating a day before the start of the school year for

120 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 22, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

nit-checking. By now, it’s so common, it’s hard to imagine that not long ago it was a novel concept. She brings in a large staff of women to keep the lines moving quickly, and a student can only enter school with a signed note from one of the women. This ensures that the school year starts off “clean.” (She knows how

many expenses parents have at the beginning of a school year, and keeps her fees extremely low.) After that, the “nits ladies” come to school once a month to check the girls’ hair. This way, cases of infestation are caught early enough, avoiding a fullfledged breakout. Mrs. D. herself marvels at the success. When she started out, the school in question had a student body of about 600 students, and the first time she checked them, 108 girls were found to be infested. Today, 25 years later, the school has close to 2,000 students, and at most, she finds six cases on a checking day. “I also find that mothers are so much more cooperative today. Years ago, they’d get upset at me if their child had nits. Now, they cooperate and ask for guidance. That’s really the key in keeping the girls nit-free.”

So what should you do if your child’s head is itching, or if nits are found in their hair? Mrs. D.’s tried-and-proven method may take long, but it works! In this case, the long way is the short way. “The process takes a full hour. If it takes less time, you’re not doing it well enough,” she says. • Empty half of a bottle of Pantene conditioner onto the child’s hair, making sure it reaches the scalp. • If the child is truly infested, add a tablespoon of baking soda. Its abrasiveness helps the nits get detached from the hair. • Start at the nape of the neck, and work with a very small amount of hair (about 1 inch to 2 inches in the width) at a time. Comb each section two to three times with a NISKA comb, wiping the comb after each time. The lice and nits should come out. • Blow-dry the hair. The heat also works to kill the lice. • After the first full treatment, continue combing the hair with the NISKA comb twice a week for a month. • After that, comb once a month to prevent another outbreak. “It’s important to keep up with the combing,” Mrs. D. says. “One nit can mean a new outbreak.” It takes only one to two weeks for a nit to hatch into a louse, and female lice can lay between 10 and 20 eggs a day.

CARING FOR

YOUR PATENT LEATHER SCHOOL BAG So shiny, so fresh and schoolish — and before you know it, your bag is full of fingerprints and scuff marks and has lost its luster. It’s simple to make it look good as new. PREVENT DAMAGE: Dab a bit of baby powder or petroleum jelly on your bag as a coating to protect the material. EVERY SO OFTEN: A good wipe with a soft, damp cloth is great maintenance for patent leather. This will take care of dust and fingerprints before they accumulate or set in. FOR STAINS: If your bag is stained, you can use spe-

cialized patent leather cleanser, but a glass cleaner like Windex works just as well. Spray a bit onto a cloth (avoid spraying directly onto your bag) and give it a good shine. FOR SCUFF MARKS: Especially when kept on the classroom floor, scuff marks are a common, and unsightly, sight that completely ruin the beauty of your wear. To deal with those, apply a bit of nail polish onto a cotton ball, and blot it onto the scuff marks.

Good to know! These tips also work for patent leather shoes.

REPAIRING A

SNAPPED HEADBAND We all know that feeling. You treat your daughter to a costly school headband, and it frames her face adorably. Not two days pass, and snap! The headband goes the way of its predecessors. However, no need to throw it out; it may be simple to fix. WHEN THE HEADBAND IS WITHIN A CASEMENT OF FABRIC:

1. Purchase a cheap plastic headband the same size as the broken one. 2. Using scissors, gently snip open one end of the fabric surrounding the headband, near where the fabric is clumped behind the ear. (Use the side where the smaller half of the snapped headband is.) 3. Working first with the smaller piece of the broken headband and then with the rest of it, gently ease them out through the hole you made. 4. Place the fabric with whatever embellishments it has flat on a surface, facedown. 5. Holding the new headband upside down, slip it into the fabric and gently ease it in until the end. 6. Use glue gun to seal the hole, or make a few stitches with a needle and thread. WHEN THE DESIGN IS GLUED OR SEWN ONTO THE HEADBAND:

1. Purchase a cheap plastic headband of the same size. 2. First remove the ribbon or embellishments from the broken headband. To remove glue, dip a Q-tip into rubbing alcohol and saturate the area well. Wait a minute, and it’ll peel right off. 3. Glue ribbon and/or embellishments onto surface of new headband.

TIPS

PERFECT AND PAINLESS

PIGTAILS Sending off your preschooler for the first time? Make her look adorable with this simple method. 1. Start by spraying the hair to make it a little wet. 2. Using the nose as a guide, part the hair at the center with a comb.

3. Starting at one ear, move your finger upward until you reach the top of the head. Use a comb to gather the hair at that spot. 4. Tie the hair several times with a soft elastic until it is secured in place. 5. To make buns, get hold of these amazing plastic twisters, which can be used to make perfect buns or twists in one swift motion. (Simply stick point into hair right beneath elastic. Bring the ponytail into the circle, and when the end gets pulled down and out of the hair, a twist forms.) They are also great for regular ponytail twists. 6. At night, instead of the tear-inducing removal of the elastics, use this nifty Gimme Style cutter comb, which you can slip into the elastic to snip it easily and let the hair loose.

MAINTAINING

SHARP UNIFORM SKIRT PLEATS Proper ironing is the key to a pleated skirt that looks as good as the day you brought it home. The secret to easy ironing lies in the washing. If a pleated skirt is properly washed, the ironing will be much easier. 1. Wash either by hand or by machine on a nospin cycle. 2. While still wet, pleat the fabric by securing each pleat with pins, paper clips or bobby pins at the hem to hold them all in place. Let drip dry. 3. Using vinegar when pressing will keep pleats really crisp and sharp. Place anywhere from a 2:1 to 10:1 ratio of water to vinegar into a spray bottle. (The strength of the scent of the vinegar will depend on how much you use, but the smell will fade quickly.) Once the skirt is dry, spray the water-vinegar solution onto a press

132 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 22, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

cloth, and lay the cloth over the pleats. 4. Press pleats with iron on the fabric’s heat setting. Do not “iron” the pleats by moving the iron; rather press down and hold. 5. Let cool. This is an important tip to pay attention to. HACKS: • You may get away with ironing every so often if you sew down pleats at the hem before washing or secure them before drying by using one of the methods mentioned above.

TIPS

Some things are so annoying, yet so part of life — a run in stockings being a perfect example. It is never welcome, but most likely to occur when you’re far away from another pair. It’s always wise to be prepared beforehand. When the inevitable occurs, keep the damage at bay with one of these methods: CLEAR NAIL POLISH: Dab the polish around the hole or at both ends of the run. Allow to dry for five minutes. HAIRSPRAY: Hairspray is another quick and easy method to prevent a run in your tights from getting any larger. Spray the area around the hole or run. Let dry and repeat. (Don’t be afraid to be heavy-handed.) Once finished, the hairspray will temporarily stiffen the fibers of your hosiery. This is a great method to use if you are in a rush, since hairspray dries almost instantly.

Desperate situations call for desperate measures… GLUE/WHITE-OUT: If you’re nowhere near nail polish or hairspray (read: not at home), most sticky substances will nip the run in the bud. BE PREPARED: Keep clear nail polish or a travel hairspray in your bag, or keep it simple — with a spare pair of stockings.

TIPS

PRESERVING VELVET SHOES (AND BAGS)

Don’t you love those plush products hinting of cold, crisp days on the horizon? But alas, by the time the season they were meant for actually arrives, it’s disappointing to see the soft material worn and stained, having lost its richness. Keep these tips in mind, and you’ll enjoy them a lot longer. Before use, spray with a stain and water protector that will prevent damage and also make stains easier to remove. Dust velvet shoes by brushing them with a soft towel or very soft brush. Once velvet gets wet, a mineral deposit remains that’s hard to be removed, so try to avoid that. Don’t wear your velvet shoes when it’s raining! And it would be wise, if not very cool, to put your velvet briefcase in a shopping bag for the duration of the downpour. If a velvet product gets wet, the first thing you should do is blot it with a water-absorbent towel, soaking up whatever you can. For watermarks, use a steamer and lightly

136 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 22, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

steam the mark from a distance. Immediately wipe with a soft, dry towel, and follow this by brushing it. Another method for removing watermarks is placing a soft towel over the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner and vacuuming the stain. This should be followed by softly brushing the stain. For stain removal, use a mix of mild dish detergent and water. Apply mixture in small amounts to fabric with a soft toothbrush, scrubbing stain softly. Let sit a few minutes and wipe away with soft cloth. If stain persists, repeat process. Always wipe or brush the material in one direction to avoid ruining the fabric.

The Halachos of Tefillah and Kavanah The Yomim Noraim are just around the corner, and as we all know, on these days, tefillah seems to take center stage. Therefore, it is fitting to review some important and often neglected halachos of davening. The biggest challenge in tefillah is kavanah, which is why the Yesod V’shoresh Ha’avodah says one should review the halachos in siman 98 of Shulchan Aruch dealing with how to attain proper kavanah each week!1 So let’s start with the halachos of that siman. The halacha says that one should try not to daven in a place or time that can disrupt his kavanah.2 This is, in fact, one reason behind the idea of being koveiah makom for tefillah.3 Kids, though, are notorious for making this halacha hard to fulfill. In fact, the Shlah Hakadosh says not to bring kids under the age of chinuch to shul because they disrupt people’s kavanah.4 But what can mothers do? They certainly can’t kick out their children every time they want to daven! However, there are a few ideas that can make davening possible: Plan around a child’s nap or before he wakes up in the morning, or have an older child or husband watch the kids. I even know someone who gives the kids a treat right before she begins to daven to keep them happy and busy. There’s another advantage to this. Sometimes children may come to resent davening, as it means that their mother will be ignoring them for the next few minutes. As soon as a mother may merely pull the siddur off the shelf, her younger children may start throwing a tantrum. Planning around naps or having the kids distracted can hopefully help a mother avoid this problem. Okay, so assuming the kids are

140 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 22, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

taken care of, transitioning from cooking, shopping, carpools, etc. to davening is still a huge challenge. The Gemara says the chasidim rishonim waited an entire hour before davening to get into the right frame of mind.5 Now, of course their davening was on a completely different level from ours today, but it is still brought down in halacha that one must clear one’s head from gashmiyus and other unrelated thoughts before davening.6 Therefore, the halacha says one should wait a short time before starting to daven.7 In that time, one should imagine how he would make sure to have his mind set while talking to a human king — and all the more so, he should have the proper kavanah as he is standing in front of Hashem, Who can even read our minds.8 Having the kavanah that one is standing before Hashem is very important since some opinions hold that if one doesn’t have this in mind, he hasn’t even fulfilled his obligation of tefillah!9 One can internalize the idea of standing before Hashem by contemplating one of the reasons given for saying “Hashem sefasai tiftach” before starting to daven. The meforshim explain that just like it is difficult for someone to speak when standing before another whom he highly reveres, similarly, during the Amidah, when we literally stand in front of the Shechinah, we ask Hashem to help us overcome this intense awe and open our mouths to daven. Having this kavanah before saying the words “Hashem sefasai tiftach” can certainly help one be mekayem the halacha that obligates one before davening to be aware that one is standing before the Shechinah.10

So at this point, shopping lists, lunch and dinner menus all have to leave the mind. Needless to say, one’s phone should be on “meeting mode,” just like it would be during a meeting with someone special. One will be surprised at how much one’s concentration can improve through having the above kavanos in mind for even a few seconds before starting to daven. We will continue iy”H next week with more halachos on kavanos during tefillah. The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.

A MINYAN TEHILLIM FOR RIGHTEOUS CHILDREN

In

the time of the Haskalah, many, many Jewish children became lost in the winds of nationalism and socialism. Parents didn’t know what to do. In those days, The Avnei Nezer, Reb Avraham Borenstein zt"l, would advise parents to say Tehillim. Parents would come, begging for help, and his reply always was, “Say Tehillim and your children won’t be swept up in the storm. There are three segulos to break a decreewear Tzitzis, give Tzedakah, and say Tehillim.” The Avnei Nezer also advised parents: “Make sure that y o u r city has a daily minyan of Talmidei Chachamim saying Tehillim, supported by the people of the city, and with these three segulos, your children would not be ruled by outside influences, and your generation will be saved!”

City Montessori School in Lucknow, India, is the world’s largest school and is spread over 20 campuses. The schools’ enrollment for 2015 reported 52,000 students and approximately 3,800 staff members. Husband and wife Ghandi founded the school with just five students in 1959, borrowing the 300 rupee ($5 U.S. dollar value) it cost to rent the premises.

According to the school president, there are many parents who will not take no for an answer when they’re told there’s no place for their child in this megaschool. They use pull and connections to get another chair crammed into an already-too-full classroom. Some parents are even brought down to the school to check out the conditions to convince them that there really is no room.

150 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 22, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Despite its huge number of students, nearly half of the pupils score 90% or above on national tests, and the class average is 80%.

How many classrooms does it take to house 52,000 students? 1,050. This means that on average, there are close to 50 students per class! How do teachers deal with such large class sizes? They have assistants, or “notebook checkers,” who help with grading and also with monitoring students and answering questions during class time.

In one of their campuses in which 7,500 children learn, it takes over an hour for all of them to file into the building in the morning.

The teachers are motivated to make their students do well in national exams by the cash rewards the school administration doles out to those whose students do well.

Forget about standard PTA. In addition to that, City Montessori teachers visit the homes of five students each month to observe whether home conditions, bedrooms and homework areas are conducive to the child’s ability to learn.

Since much of its student body is poor, about 25 percent of its students receive a 40 percent reduction on school fees.

Several years ago, the CMS didn’t want to admit 31 children from poor families free of charge, as is expected by law. They took the matter to court, saying that the government approached them after the term had started and the classes were full. They ended up accepting 13 of these students.

All students from kindergarten to grade 12 wear uniform — different ages wear slightly different styles, and there are separate summer and winter uniforms. Most of the tops are light blue and bottoms, navy.

What a strange call. We just barged into an elderly woman’s house for nothing.

Hi, police chief speaking. You’d better apologize to the lady whose address you sent us to.

Perhaps the local police didn’t do enough?

Let’s try asking them to check again. If they refuse, we’ll have to go to Switzerland ourselves.

Listen, I think we should go out and check the area. Here are photos of suspects.

What? You found evidence that the children were there? I’m so excited!

Oy, they hid the children. Now it’s even more complicated. What should we do?

According to security cameras from stores in the area, there’s lots of movement in and out of the building. We’ll call you back with our conclusions.

Get ready. We’re going out to search right away.

Recap: In Zurich, an old widow opens the door for the police in the home where the children had been held and insists she doesn’t know what they want from her.

The Different Styles of Monsey Homes Exploring architectural structures in our area BROUGHT TO YOU BY: YOEL GORALNIK

Featured Home Style:

TOWNHOUSE Traditionally, townhouses are tall and narrow terraced homes, designed for “vertical living” in high-density areas. (Terraced house: a house built as part of a continuous row in a uniform style.) The term “townhouse” came to be in Britain years ago, when noble families, who resided in the countryside on large properties, also had a smaller dwelling “in town” — in London — some of them terraced, and the grandest of them stand-alone buildings. Today the word townhouse is used to describe attached homes in a multi-unit complex that mimic the design of a detached home.

St. James Square in London, circa 1752, where nobility owned “townhouses” for when they’d spend time in the city

FYI: Stacked townhouses are townhouses that are divided into two units, each one on two levels and with a separate entrance leading to the street.

160 / THE MONSEY VIEW

FYI: In cities, townhouses are known as “rowhouses,” and true to their name, are arranged in a row across the entire block and are usually uniformly built.

FYI: Here in Monsey, the maximum number of townhouses built per property is three. In some areas, they’re constructed in rows of six over two properties.

ATTRIBUTES: Townhouses are single-family dwellings with at least two floors that share a wall (or two) with another house. Each townhouse, and the property on which it sits, is individually owned (except if they’re sold as condominiums; see sidebar), and especially in the suburbs, are not necessarily uniform. Each unit has its own entrance. Its floor plan is influenced by the colonial style, where the living area is on the main level and the sleeping area on the upper level.

PROS: Townhouses are usually less expensive than singlefamily homes in a given area, since they simply take up less space property-wise. Many find security in living so close to their neighbors, whether it’s those who sleep alone at home or leave their homes empty when they go away on extended leave. Being that there’s a shared wall, utility bills — especially heating and cooling — are dramatically cheaper than single-family homes. In most cases, townhouse living means you own a property, albeit not a very large one. The multilevel living is also something many find attractive for efficient home organization.

CONS: Shared property means compromising privacy, though here in the suburbs, entrance placement in townhouses often does maximize privacy. Making full use of the property for building also means smaller yards and less space for the kids to play. And even though half or a third of the property may be yours, you’ll be sharing many things with the neighbors, like swing sets, gazebos and the control of how to maintain your grass. Getting a mortgage for a townhouse can often pose problems, as it is hard to appraise. When it comes to renovating or building, even if it’s not a condo, neighbor’s easement rights may limit you.

UPGRADE POTENTIAL: Renovations are more complicated when you’re sharing a wall, and often there isn’t place to extend.

While a townhouse classifies the structure and style of the home, the term condominium, or condo in short, denotes its legal ownership status. That means that many townhouses are condos, too; many townhouses are individually owned properties and not condos; and many condos are not townhouses (such as when each homeowner owns a flat as opposed to a vertical structure). A condominium is a complex of multiple units, each of them individually owned, with a common property that is jointly owned by all the owners. So each homeowner within the complex owns the interior of his unit, and the common areas (property, grass, driveway, walkways, hallways) as well as certain amenities (elevators, well, HVAC system, common utilities) are collectively managed by the owners through their association, named the Homeowner’s Association (HOA).

So if a condo-owner wants to make interior changes to their home, nobody is keeping them back, but when it comes to anything, from planting a tree, to installing a swing set or hiring a landscaper, all the owners have to come to agreement through the HOA.
