FINALLY A REMEDY (Re: Summer’s Bane, Issue 150) Lovely summer walks along Viola Park walkways mean to me allergic reactions to the poisonous plants growing on the sides. It seems that I develop poison ivy simply by having it float toward me. And my feeling is valid! Urushiol (the rash-causing substance found in poison ivy and oak plants) can become airborne! So it is important to know that it is possible to get the poison ivy/oak rash simply by being in the vicinity of the poisonous plants.

Over the years I have tried every shmear and natural remedy recommended by my GP, allergist, dermatologist, pharmacist, friend, etc.

Not a single remedy made much impact. This year, my pharmacy recommended a product called Zanfel. It’s pricey and its application requires following a specific set of directions, but it relieves the itch and thereby minimizes the spread (itching leads to scratching, causing pus to ooze, which intensifies infected sites).

Perhaps this product will ease the discomfort of my fellow sufferers.

(Inbox, Issue 155) Thank you for giving us a platform to voice our concerns. While I am writing mostly in reference to the letter about the dialect used when conversing with our cleaning help, this letter should have been written a long while ago.

We definitely should use the nicest language when conversing with our cleaning help and be mentchlich, but to me it is more important to address how much money is being charged for these cleaning services.

Am I the only one who realizes that the cost is going up every half year?

Weren’t we just paying two dollars less per hour? I was horrified to be offered a cleaning lady who wanted no less than $13 an hour. We all need their help, but can we please unite and not let this happen?

If you offer your cleaning lady more money, then most of us will no longer be able to afford our help.

Even if you feel that, yes, it’s worth paying any price to get the help, then take a minute to think about what will happen in a half year or year from now. Will you be able to afford $14 or $15 an hour? And think of other people, if you can. By agreeing to pay more, you are making our entire town lose money.

I know this may have been addressed in the past, but if we don’t all unite to deal with this problem right now, where will it lead?

Dear Deliberator, No need to eat salmon for a week straight! Here are some dinner ideas that will help you stay on track: 1. FISH. Yes, fish. Make it exciting, though. For example, make fish kabobs or fish burgers. Prepare a kani salad or even your own sushi. Try a fish other than your typical salmon and tilapia.

2. VEGGIE BURGERS. The ones by Dr. Praeger’s or Morning Star are good selections.

3. OMELETTES are not just for breakfast anymore. Get creative by making shakshuka, for example.

Adding sauteed vegetables will make this option more filling.

4. LOW-FAT CHEESE. You can make a spinach or broccoli sauté using oil spray, and add some reducedfat cheese. Or take a baked potato, top with broccoli and add cheese on top to melt.

“THIS TRIP IS GOING TO BE FANTASTIC,” said Moshe to Dovid and Yossi. “I already made our reservations. The only issue is transportation. Maybe we should rent a car and split the cost and the driving.”

“I have a great idea. Let’s borrow your father’s new car!” suggested Dovid with an impish grin.

“That would take our trip to a whole new level.”

“Oh, I don’t know about that,” countered Yossi.

“Moshe, your father is very careful with that car. I don’t think it’s worth the risk. Besides, we could never really relax if we had to worry so much over the car.”

“Oh, come on,” Dovid said. “Moshe’s father has to be one of the nicest men I know. I’m sure he’ll lend us the car if Moshe begs him. We’ll be careful, but even if something did happen to the car, he couldn’t stay mad at Moshe for long. He really loves you, Moshe.”

“Moshe’s father is a nice man, but he is also very into his car. In fact, I’m only half joking when I say that he loves that car more than anything in this world. He would forgive Moshe if something happened to the car, but he’d be very upset and less likely to trust Moshe in the future,” added Yossi.

“Maybe Yossi’s right,” said Moshe.

“Come on, Moshe. You’re so generous,” replied Dovid. “You always like to be nice to people. All you have to do is ask, and we could have a great trip.”

“No way,” asserted Yossi. “This is asking too much. Moshe should be less generous in this case.

Let’s rent a car.”

It stung Moshe a little to hear Yossi speak of his father this way, but he knew that Yossi was right. It wasn’t worth the risk to borrow the new car. Moshe agreed with Yossi that a rental was a better choice, and finally Dovid agreed.

Who is the better friend in this story, Dovid or Yossi? On the surface, it might appear that Dovid is the better friend. After all, most of what he said were compliments. Moshe is generous. Moshe’s father is nice, he loves Moshe, and he would surely forgive Moshe. Yossi, on the other hand, speaks somewhat

negatively. He says Moshe should be stingy, and he makes Moshe’s father sound very materialistic.

And yet, we can see that Yossi is being the true friend. Dovid does not have Moshe’s best interests at heart, so his compliments are not so complimentary. Yossi does have Moshe’s best interests at heart, so his insults are actually kindnesses.

In Parshas Devarim, Moshe Rabbeinu spends 37 days speaking to Klal Yisroel. Much of what Moshe says is rebuke. On the other hand, we saw in Parshas Balak that Bilaam spoke great praise of the Jewish people. It would seem that compliments are “better” than criticisms. Why, then, did Bilaam praise Klal Yisroel? Why did Moshe rebuke them?

Clearly, Moshe Rabbeinu’s actions were better than Bilaam’s, but how was the rebuke better?

Bilaam praised the Jewish people because he wanted them to feel satisfied with who they were.

Instead of seeing their own flaws, they saw only good in themselves. By thinking well of their level, they became vulnerable to sin, and this is exactly what Bilaam wanted. He then advised Balak to send in the Midianite women to entice the Yidden to sin.

Moshe Rabbeinu, l’havdil, spoke words of rebuke and criticism to the Jewish people. He wanted to motivate Klal Yisroel to do teshuvah. Giving a compliment can make a person feel better about themselves, but giving guidance and direction can help them live better lives. But giving mussar is only the first part of the process. The second part is for the recipient of the rebuke, who must be both open to hearing criticism and willing to change.

Accepting constructive criticism can be very difficult. Change is difficult. Growth is difficult. It has been said that some people who look in the mirror and do not like what they see blame the mirror. A mature person wants to know if they have a problem so that they can take steps to correct it.

It can be hard to accept criticism rather than compliments, but being willing to accept rebuke may very well be one of the best complimentary things about us. It may be hard, but it’s surely worth it.

O&R Issues Customer Alert for Fraudulent Payment Scam A PHONY BILL PAYMENT scam that has been sweeping the nation has hit the Monsey area as well, with fraudsters demanding payments from Orange and Rockland Utilities customers for what they claim are past due gas and electric bills.

An alert issued by O&R on July 10 warned customers to be

wary of people claiming to represent the utility company calling and threatening to discontinue service unless payment is made immediately. Victims are instructed to purchase a Green Dot MoneyPak, a prepaid debit card, at a nearby pharmacy or convenience store and to call back immediately with the num-

bers on the card or risk having their service turned off that day. Fraudsters then transfer the Green Dot MoneyPak funds to another card, redeeming the money at an ATM. Anyone who has received a phone call of this nature is asked to hang up immediately and to call O&R at 1-877-434-4100.

Source of E. Coli Outbreak Finally Identified AFTER WEEKS of urging the public to avoid romaine lettuce because of an E. coli outbreak, federal officials have pinpointed the source of the problem and have declared the emergency over.

The Journal News reported that the bacteria was found in canal waters in Yuma, Arizona. According to a statement released by the Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control tested water, soil and cow manure in their attempts

to find traces of E. coli 0157:H7, the bacteria that sickened 210 people in 36 states, including 11 in New York. Five people died after consuming tainted lettuce. The outbreak was first discovered on April 4 and was proclaimed officially over on June 28.

Another E. coli outbreak that took place in November and December and sickened 25 people was also determined to be caused by leafy

greens, but was unrelated to this most recent scare.

Arrests Made in Motzei Shabbos Wesley Hills Robbery LESS THAN A WEEK after the incident occured, two local men are under arrest for taking watches, jewelry and a camera from a Wesley Hills home.

VIN News reported that the two suspects made their way into the unlocked home of Boruch and Chana Weingarden just as Shabbos was ending on July 7.

Hearing footsteps in her home, Mrs. Weingarden, the mother of nine, assumed that her husband and brother had just returned

home from shul. Walking into her kitchen, she was stunned to find two men with bandanas covering their faces. After being confronted by Mrs. Weingarden, the pair fled the house and left the area on foot.

The entire incident took just minutes. Boruch Weingarden noted that the robbers seemed familiar with the layout of his family’s East Lane home, including the location of the master bedroom and several exits.

The Ramapo Police Department arrested 20-year-old Nicholas Kurpick of Montebello and 19-year-old Lonney Mathes of Airmont on July 12. They were charged with robbery and burglary; both felony charges of the second-degree. Kurpick has two prior arrests, both for theft.

Police said that they could not comment on any details of how the arrest was made, but reminded all area residents to keep their doors locked.

THE 22ND ANNUAL KUPATH EZRAH ASIFA Reb Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin woos the assembled The 8th day of Chanukah will remain etched in our collective memory as a day of an outstanding miracle.

Reb Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, who was languishing in a Federal prison with a sentence of 27 years based on trumped up charges was suddenly pardoned by President Donald Trump and released after serving 8 ½ years of his term. The shock turned into joy, the joy turned into festivities, the festivities turned into gratitude and thanks to Hashem. Reb Sholom Mordechai attained celebrity status as he shared his saga of faith and trust in Hashem under extreme adversity. His battle cry of Emunah Bitachon Geulah, hit the Greater Jewish community as a tsunami. This was a moment in time where Jews from all walks of life joined together in unison in an unprecedented display of Achdus.

Kupath Ezrah grasped the opportunity to invite Reb Sholom Mordechai as the keynote speaker for this year’s annual Asifa. He was introduced by Rabbi Pinchos Lipschutz director of the Yated Neeman. Rav Pinchos was most instrumental in bringing Reb Sholom Mordechai’s plight to the public which helped facilitate his release. Rabbi Lipschutz talked about his longstanding relationship with Kupath Ezrah from the days when he was Talmid of Rabbi Hershel Mashinsky the founder of Kupath Ezrah, until today. He also spoke about how the Monsey community came together to support the Rubashkin family , physically, morally , and financially during their trying time.

Rabbi Rubashkin blended his passion and his wit as he shared his story of his steadfast faith in Hashem in his most harrowing and trying times. He shared how during the deepest darkest moments of his incarceration when all prospects of an early release seemed to be the most improbable, that is where he gathered his belief and reliance in Hashem. He pointed out how he was unyielding and uncompromising when it came to his religious beliefs and convictions. He would not be coerced to forfeit his Yarmulke or Tzitzis. He would not miss reciting his Tehillim every day. His observance of Mitzvos was impeccable. He studied and reviewed the Sefer Chovas Halvavos countless times. Reb Sholom Mordechai expressed his gratitude to the Monsey community for being a stalwart beacon of strength to his family while he was incarcerated. His message to the assembled was that this experience taught him that wherever we are and whatever possession we think we own, in reality does not belong to us. Hashem appoints us as emissaries to share what we have with others.

Indeed, that is the lesson of this mishnah: to recognize that everything belongs to Hashem. However, the lashon that the Tanna uses is still perplexing. Why does he tell us to “give Him what is His”? If it already belongs to Hashem, how can we give it to Him? All of us understand that we are here to improve our middos.

No one can say that he is perfect and has nothing to work on. We must constantly make a personal inventory of our middos so that we can know what to correct while we are still alive. Without this constant awareness, we don’t have the clarity to know what exactly needs to be improved.

At the same time, humans also have a desire to be unique, whether in matters of gashmiyus or ruchniyus. But what is real uniqueness in the eyes of Hakadosh Baruch Hu? The Even Shleimah (Shimloyer Rav, zt”l) in Parshas Pinchas brings down that the Baal Shem Hakadosh said on the pasuk

“Hashem malach gei’us laveish” (Tehillim 93:1) that Hashem hates gaavah and wants a person to be an anav, humble.

When a person rids himself of gaavah because of Hashem’s honor, Hashem creates for Himself a garment out of this gaavah, which is the most precious material.

The Rambam writes a pshat on the words we say every day, “L’maan yezamercha kavod” (Tehillim 30:13), as follows: If a person uses honor l’Shem Shamayim and not for his own pleasure, and he returns the honor to the Owner of the honor, then the honor will thank and praise

Once we rid ourselves of such middos, Hashem takes them and creates the most precious clothes out of them.

Hakadosh Baruch Hu for its own creation. In the words of the pasuk, “Lemaan yezamercha kavod” — the honor will sing praises to Hashem for its own creation.

The same, writes the Even Shleimah, applies to all of our bad middos. Hashem Yisborach gave us those middos so that we can grow in avodas Hashem by overpowering them and throwing them away. We must rid ourselves of middos like anger, taavah and gaavah, which prevent us from building a strong connection to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. However, once we rid ourselves of such middos, Hashem takes them and creates the most precious clothes out of them. The same is true if a person is naturally very softhearted and compassionate, and yet in a time of need

pushes away those middos to be strong and act like an achzar against the yetzer hara just for the honor of Hashem. In such instances Hashem will also create garments out of the middos that were pushed away in His honor.

Every Yid is born with a unique purpose, and none of us can fulfill the purpose of another Yid. The Nesivos Sholom writes that we can discover our purpose by recognizing what is the most difficult thing for us to change.

Even if we daven three times a day and learn the entire day, this goal remains unfulfilled unless it is addressed. To fulfill the requirement of this goal, one must use true mesiras nefesh, because simply using the power of our brain is not enough.

Now we can better understand the Tanna’s words. The Tanna is telling us that if we want to feel unique, like no one else in the world, instead of searching for uniqueness in gashmiyus’dik ways, which will never bring real simcha anyway, we should give Him what is His. Hashem gave us difficult middos to work on, and now we must overpower them and give them back to Hashem. Perhaps we feel that those traits are part of our character, but “you and whatever is yours” — even those things that make us feel unique — can also be worked on so that they can become His. And that’s why Dovid Hamelech said with pride: “For everything from You, and from Your Own hand, we give to You!” Rabbi Dovid Steiman specializes in the chinuch of today’s bachurim, enabling them to become their very best selves.

This filling entree is most appropriate for those who want to avoid serving soup in the heat. This dish is best served warm, but is delicious at room temperature as well.

1. Place wraps in metal taco shell molds and bake at 350° for ten minutes. Alternatively, grease a small round foil pan, place wrap inside, and bake.

Potato Salad

INGREDIENTS 15 loose potatoes 1 large loose carrot 1 container sour pickles 1 purple onion 1 red pepper 1 green pepper ¼ cup vinegar 2 T. salt

DIRECTIONS 1. Wash unpeeled potatoes well and place whole in a pot of water.

2. Bring to a boil and cook for approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes.

Test for doneness by piercing with a fork. Fork should go in easily without breaking the potatoes.

3. While potatoes are cooking, grate a carrot and sour pickle on medium shredder blade. Cut onion and peppers into short, thin strips.

4. Place all vegetables in a bowl with vinegar, salt, sugar and black pepper.

5. When potatoes are done, remove from pot one at a time. Rinse under cold water and slip peels off.

4 egg whites 2 T. corn starch

LETCHO 1½ large Spanish onions, diced ¼ cup oil

2 medium squash 2 large tomatoes 1 red pepper

1. Cut all chicken cutlets in half to get two thin cutlets from each.

1. Grease muffin pans.

2. Mix eggs with starch until well combined and place in a bag with chicken, making sure to coat all pieces. Place in fridge for minimum one hour up to overnight.

2. Sprinkle each muffin cup with bread crumbs, coating bottom and sides.

3. Dip each cutlet in oil mixture and lay on flat surface.

4. Place 1½ tablespoon letcho on each cutlet.

THE MINHAG IS not to partake of meat (or chicken1) nor wine (or grape juice2) from Rosh Chodesh Av.3 The reason for this is that from Rosh Chodesh Av we decrease in simcha, and Chazal tell us, “Ein simcha ela b’basar v’yayin.” Another reason is that since the korbanos consisted of meat and wine, we desist to remember it. Based on the second reason, some are machmir not to partake of meat and wine from Shivah Asar B’Tammuz since that’s when the Korban Hatamid ceased to be brought.4 One who accidently made a bracha on meat or wine should taste a little of it so that his bracha shouldn’t be l’vatalah.5 One who accidently prepared a meat dish, however, may not eat it.6 The minhag is to refrain from eating a dish that was cooked together with meat or wine7 unless it is batel b’shishim. However, a dish that was cooked in a clean meat pot may be eaten even if meat was cooked in it within the last 24 hours.8 The poskim differ on whether one may taste fleishig food on Erev Shabbos as one does every week. Some say not do it at all,9 others say one may taste it and spit it out.10 Still others say that one may even swallow what he tasted.11 If one feels that it is necessary to taste it to make sure it’s tasty, then one may taste

and even swallow a little bit.12 One may eat meat and drink wine on Shabbos even if he accepted Shabbos early.

One may also feed children who usually eat their Shabbos seudah before Shabbos comes in (during the summertime when Shabbos comes in late) from the Shabbos food that contains meat an hour or two before Shabbos.13 One may not give meat or wine even to children who have reached two or three years of age.14 It is brought in the name of Rav Elyashiv, zt”l, that one may be lenient and give children until the age of nine a dish that was made with meat (but not meat itself) or chicken because these are only chumros, and we are not machmir on children.15 One may eat meat and drink wine at a seudas mitzvah such as a bris, pidyon haben, bar mitzvah that is on time16 and a siyum.17 Friends and relatives may eat meat and drink wine at the seudah as long as they would have come to the seudah even if it would have taken place at another time. However, one who is coming only to partake of the meat and wine is considered as doing an aveirah.18 At a seudas mitzvah that is taking place in the week in which Tisha B’Av falls (shavua shechal bo), only close relatives (who are pasul l’eidus) and ten friends may partake of the meat and wine, but the

rest of the people attending may not.19 In a year when Tisha B’Av falls out on Shabbos this does not apply, and all friends and relatives can partake of the meat and wine like the halacha of a seudas mitzvah that takes place before shavua shechal bo.20 One is only allowed to eat meat at a seudas mitzvah at the place where the seudah is taking place; therefore one who takes some food home may not partake of it.21 Regarding a siyum, even friends and relatives who did not partake of the learning may eat meat at the seudah, as long as they would have come even if it would have taken place at another time (while following the guidelines in the previous halacha). However, according to some poskim, only those who are somehow connected to the learning — such as the gabba’im, those who supported the learning through donations, or even those who helped prepare the seudah — may be invited to the seudah, but not other friends.22 Some suggest that only one who would make a seudas siyum even if it fell out on other days may do so when it falls out in the Nine Days.23 The Mishnah Berurah rules that only a siyum that falls out naturally during the Nine Days may be celebrated with meat and wine, and one may not purposely learn slower or faster to make the siyum fall out during the Nine Days.24 There are those, however, who have the minhag to even purposely plan a siyum during these days.25 To the other extreme, the Aruch Hashulchan says that the minhag in his place was to even postpone a siyum that would naturally fall out during the Nine Days in order to be able to fully celebrate it after Tisha B’Av. To avoid having to abide by all the above conditions and in order to not put oneself in a machlokes haposkim, some have the minhag to serve fish during a seudas mitzvah instead of meat.26 Since there are many different minhagim in regard to all this, everyone should ask his rav what to do.

Since most of the Beis Hamikdash burned on the tenth of Av, the Ashkenazic minhag is to also refrain from meat and wine on the tenth of Av until chatzos.

However, in a year like this, when Tisha B’Av was postponed, the minhag is to only refrain from meat and wine until

MY USUALLY WELL-STOCKED freezer stood in the corner of my kitchen, forlorn, a hulking mass of metal emitting vapor on almost-bare ice-frosted shelves.

It contained one or two containers of soup, some plastic-wrapped chicken trays, and several hardto-identify soggy foil-wrapped somethings or other.

No challos. No kokosh cake.

Not even chocolate chip cookies.

(I guess it’s apparent that I am of Hungarian descent and live in the US of A.) This particular summer had found me, aside from the regulars — washing ice pop residue off the floors, dealing with an overflow of wet clothing, and constantly running after my kids outdoors — occupied with extra duties. First my sister-in-law’s two-year-old stayed with us for two weeks (baruch

Hashem, oif simchos), and immediately thereafter one of my children was hospitalized.

Coming on the head of all that, I faced my freezer on this Thursday morning in the Nine Days, determined to fill up those shelves.

I usually do most of my Shabbos cooking on Thursday and fulfill “to’ame’ah chaim zachu” in the form of Thursday night dinner.

Being that a fleishig meal was not an option now, I had made sure to double most of the Shabbos cooking the week before, and the menu I’d planned for this particular Thursday night was what my children call “The Breakfast Supper.”

It includes rolls, spreads and some salads, and is always a favorite.

I try not to overdo the cooking in the Nine Days, anyway. Nutritious — yes, palatable — okay, but gourmet and fancy — absolutely not.

So, some extra time, a bored cleaning lady (no laundry, no heavy cleaning) and voila! It was the perfect day for a full-fledged bake-a-thon.

Armed with lots and lots of ingredients, two cleaned ovens turned parve according to our dayan’s specifications, two mixers (my trusty old Bosch and an even older Kitchen-Aid), I got to work full force.

As the second challah dough was just starting to mix, my phone rang. The caller ID announced my husband’s workplace, but it was still pretty early in the day for the “just checking in” phone call.

“Hello,” I said over the whirr of the machine.

“Good morning to you.” My husband’s voice sounded excited, yet somewhat hesitant. “I just finished a mesechta. I know that you usually use the Shabbos food as Thursday’s supper, so I figured that it will make it much easier for you if we have a fleishige siyum tonight. I didn’t tell you about this earlier, because I wasn’t sure if I would manage to finish the learning.”

Mustering up all the excitement I was able to, I injected positivity and pride into my response and put down the phone.

Now what? My thoughts were racing as I quickly went through several menu options. First things first!

I pulled some chicken out of the freezer; chicken soup was a must if I wanted it to look like I had been cooking for Shabbos.

As for bilkelach for our festive night, at least my challah dough was up; I’d just take off some dough.

I prepared some roasted chicken that went straight into the cleaned-for-parve oven, and it was soon joined by potato kugels baked in ramekins to strike that perfect balance of a Shabbos-siyum meal, so my husband wouldn’t be the wiser.

Then I decided to invite my parents — they didn’t do that well on a prolonged milchig diet — and dressed up the table with an entree of layered vegetables in mini trifles. Dessert wasn’t too hard; I had all the ingredients for jumbo chocolate chip cookies at hand!

But I couldn’t forget about the remaining dough

that still needed to be shaped into challos. While deftly braiding them, it suddenly hit me: My husband had worked so hard to finish a mesechta to make it easier for me, and here I was, working so, so hard not to make him feel bad. Who exactly was gaining anything from all of this?

That is when I remembered a little anecdote that I had read about many years earlier.

Several weeks before her wedding, Simi, an excited kallah, went to visit her beloved grandparents. Thinking about the wonderful relationship that her grandparents shared, she posed a question: “Bubby, can you please give me some good shalom bayis tips?”

“Well, it is always good to be tuned into your husband’s likes and dislikes,” her grandmother said. “Be ready to give up of yourself for him. Let me share with you one sacrifice that I have made over the years: Knowing that Zeidy prefers the chicken thigh, I serve that to him each night, and I have the drumstick, even though I also like the thigh better.”

Just then, Zeidy walked into the kitchen and caught on to the conversation. He started laughing and said, “Really?

I always thought that I was eating the thigh because you like the drumstick! I always feel like I am giving you the choiciest part!”

Simi looked on incredulously. “I am having a hard time understanding this. For the past fifty years, you were both eating your lesser preferred part of the chicken, thinking that you are doing the other person a favor, and nobody gained anything!”

“It is not like that,” Bubby retorted. “For the past fifty years, night after night, we both invested in our marriage. That alone tastes much better than a preferred piece of chicken.”

I try not to overdo the cooking in the Nine Days anyway. Nutritious — yes, palatable — okay, but gourmet and fancy — absolutely not.

OUR MEMORIES of that evening lasted way longer than many freezers full of food would, and my secret will stay safe, because my husband doesn’t read English that well.

But in case you want to know — yes, every year around this time, I do know to casually ask, “Any siyums this year?” and plan accordingly.

A friend of ours recently said that after all of these years, he still finds paying shivah calls so intense and difficult. As much as chesed comes naturally to him in so many ways, and as much as he knows how special and appreciated this act of kindness is, it still overwhelms him.

I don’t think he’s alone.

We were raised in a culture that promotes happy endings and doesn’t dwell much on the messier, more difficult parts of life and loss. Dealing with hardship of any sort isn’t easy. We tend to distract ourselves from the sadder parts of life by keeping busy or getting involved in other things, or somehow convincing ourselves that “it’s probably for the best” and focusing on whatever silver lining we can come up with. We make retirement parties and goodbye parties, cheering people on when in all probability they’d prefer a shoulder to cry on. It’s just so much easier not to deal with the downs.

Coming to a shivah house, though, there’s nowhere to hide. The pain of loss is prevalent and palpable. We’re not meant to make it anything but

what it is. And that is the bittersweet beauty of shivah.

A woman I heard speak many years ago told of making her decision to convert to Judaism after she and her Jewish husband both lost their fathers the same year. Her husband came from a religious family and sat shivah with them. She saw the way they had the opportunity to fully grieve during shivah without distraction, whereas her Irish relatives got drunk after her father’s funeral and numbly went to work the next day.

She realized the sensitivity inherent in our mitzvos, the understanding Hakadosh Baruch Hu has for our needs, especially at such a vulnerable time. The halachos of aveilus were exactly in sync with her needs to mourn. She embraced Torah fully as a result of that recognition, convinced and confident that it was what her soul craved in all areas and stages of life.

When paying a shivah call, rather than being selfconscious about how we sound or seem, it’s probably more productive to imagine how the mourners are feeling and what their needs may be. Coming from that place of empathy is always so helpful. They’re processing a loss, and so they appreciate the support of friends and family and the desire of others to learn about their loved one They are feeling such strong emotions and are relieved to know that their feelings won’t overwhelm others. Instead of helping them see “the bright side,” visitors can be such a comfort when they hold and share the pain with them.

A high school boy went to be menachem avel his beloved rosh yeshivah, who had suffered a devastating loss. While he was there, another esteemed rosh yeshivah came in and took a seat across from the avel. The young man was anxious to hear what he believed would be powerful, inspiring words of chizuk and encouragement. Instead, he saw the visiting rabbi take the hands of his peer and, with tears in his eyes, simply say, “It must be awful. It must be so, so hard.” That taught him far more about what comfort means than any speech could have.

The word rachamim comes from the root of rechem, a womb. For the greatest compassion is found in just holding and housing another, wherever they are emotionally. We so often believe that to help someone in a sad place we need to fix things for him or her, to turn things around for the better, to make them shift to a happier place. Doing that, though, gives them the impression that what they are dealing with is too much for us, that it’ll only be tolerable if we can change it somehow. It’s when we can join another and just hold their hand or their gaze, when we can give them the message of imo anochi b’tzara (I’m with you in your pain) as Hashem does, that we really offer solace. By their seeing that their pain isn’t too much for us to share, they are reassured that they aren’t “too much” and can get through their process without needing to accommodate others’ needs for them to move on.

Also important to remember is that less is more. Part of why shivah calls are intimidating is because we assume we have to work hard at them. We may think we have to come up with the perfect memory of the loved one, or the perfect question or comment. Best is to follow the mourner’s lead. Asking a simple question like, “Which quality of your loved one stood out for you?” can allow for thoughts to flow. If the mourner asks you a question like, “Do you remember my mother/father…?” you can be honest and real. Embellishments aren’t appreciated or necessary, but real memories and impressions are special. And if silence seems the choice at the time of your visit, you shouldn’t feel pressured to fill the space with words. The avel may appreciate the chance to be comfortable being quiet and in his or her own thoughts, content with the warmth of company around while doing so.

If you are goal-oriented, you will be frustrated if your goal is to “see the avel smile” or feel better. You

can, though, set a goal for yourself to come out of the shivah house with some message you can learn from. Learning about another’s life or relationship can always move us in some way. And by telling the mourner (perhaps at a later point) what you learned about his or her loved one in the shivah house, you are giving them a sense that the legacy of their loved one lives on.

Often, the shivah house will be a busy one.

There may be multiple mourners with multiple visitors at any given point. It’s tempting to catch up with neighbors or faraway friends whom you meet there. That would lessen the impact of your visit, though, and set a tone that would diminish from the task at hand. It’s not that you aren’t experiencing connection while there together; you are connecting through playing supportive roles in unison, offering the aveilim an emotionally nurturing force field that is charged with shared love and concern.

Being part of a group in that way is meaningful, even if you can’t catch up and have a conversation.

Nothing about this article is meant to make shivah calls easier. Death and loss are anything but easy, and no tips or tools will change that. But perhaps we can embrace the roles we can play for others during their sad parts of life and be able to live the full gamut of emotional experience even when it’s uncomfortable.

The types of people who really feel the hard times will be the ones who really feel the happy times, too. Fully embracing the emotional rollercoaster of life is what makes us alive in the truest, deepest way. Hopefully, our being there for others will assure us of having Hakadosh Baruch Hu there for us, supportive and affirming and holding us through whatever needs we have and feel through all of our life’s stages. We are never too much for Him… and that is ultimately our greatest comfort.

INITIAL TRAFFIC SAFETY MODIFICATIONS AT THE INTERSECTION OF SUZANNE DRIVE AND FRANCIS PLACE The following intersection improvements are planned by the Town of Ramapo and reflect an initial phase to provide pedestrian and vehicle safety improvements. I HAD NO PREMONITION, nothing that hinted that this balmy spring day would become so tragic.

I had no idea that this very date would forever be commemorated as my sister-in-law Chaya Sury’s yahrtzeit.

Chaya Sury was always so full of life, full of wisdom and wit. She was such a caring wife to her husband and the best daughter parents could have. She was a gem of a granddaughter and the quintessential lovely daughter-in-law. She was such a good friend and neighbor to many. But most of all was the devotion she showed to her darling little and not-so-little children. She was so tuned in to their needs and

wants, and gave each child genuine love and attention. She so doted on her children, the children who were now bereft of a mother.

She was the most treasured sister-in-law ever. Her phone number was the one I would dial for every chinuch-relationship-cooking-baking-crafting question. She would listen so carefully and would always know just what to answer.

She would know when to be serious and just when to have a good laugh.

She was the life of the party and the light of my life.

AFTER a most heart-wrenching levayah, all I longed for was to sit down in a low chair and mourn.

Mourn and be comforted. But there was nobody to tell me “HaMakom yenachem,” because I was not an avel.

It didn’t matter how loud my feelings proclaimed that I had been just as close to Chaya Sury as her siblings had.

Instead, I found myself at the supermarket with a list of ingredients in my hand. I avoided meeting people’s gazes and lowered my eyes from the pitying stares as I bought all I needed to cook a meal for the aveilim. Although so many amazing friends and relatives came forth with offers for food, the first days were filled by us siblings-in-law.

I spent as much time as possible in the shivah house. With all that

pain and sorrow, there is a measure of comfort that is gleaned just by sitting together with the family and drawing strength from each other, by listening to the words of chizuk from laymen and rabbanim and from those who had already lost a loved one. It was consoling to hear about all those whose lives were touched

by Chaya Sury’s presence.

Yet most of the time, I was busy not with the memories and solace, but with dispensing drinks, picking up phones, cleaning the kitchen, refilling the tissues, taking out trash bag after trash bag, and running out for yet another few missing essentials.

Upon the urging of my husband,

I stayed home in Monsey every other day, as the shivah was taking place in the city. My children were so confused and broken and needed me to talk to them. They needed some stability during this shaky time.

They had lost a loving aunt, their father was sitting shivah, and it was hard for them to process it all. But the days spent at home were so, so much harder than the time spent at the shivah house. I felt so disconnected, yet my mind was there with my family all day. I couldn’t stop thinking about Chaya Sury.

It was so validating to hear from my dear brother-in-law Avi, Chaya Sury’s grieving husband, when the arduous week was over, “There were

more than twenty people sitting shivah, but many, many more were standing shivah with us.”

SEVERAL months passed and Chodesh Av arrived. For the first time, I acutely felt what the Nine Days really mean. I heard Hakadosh Baruch Hu telling us, “Kinderlach, to this loss, we are all biologically related. It is our collective sorrow, and one of such great magnitude. Come, sit with Me. Forget about the mundane everyday tasks for now. Let’s talk about and realize what we had and what we lost. Let’s think of what we can do to attain it again. Let’s mourn the Beis Hamikdash. And let us, together, be comforted. Nachamu ami.”

THERE IS A STORY in the biography of Monsey’s founding father, R’ Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz, zt”l, that once, while walking with his talmidim outside, one of them nonchalantly ripped off a leaf from a tree, and upon seeing this, R’ Shraga Feivel started crying.

We must realize that when stepping foot onto a trail in the woods, we are entering sacred territory.

While public parklands are indeed there for the enjoyment of all, at the same time, there are many who consider themselves stewards of the wild and take it as a personal affront when the wilderness is not given the respect it deserves.

Taking a nice hike means that you have recognized the pleasure of joining the “outdoor community” (even if it’s just for the day) and that you are committed to upholding the ethics and good practices of the outdoors. The “outdoor community” is a term used to describe like-minded individuals who wish to nourish their mind, body and soul by connecting with nature. When people venture out into the wild, they expect peace, quiet, maturity, respect, serenity and a place for introspection and rejuvenation. This is the unwritten rule of the wild.

In this week’s issue, you will become acquainted with the Seven Principles of the Leave No Trace movement. These principles are designed to communicate the best available minimum-impact guidance for enjoying the outdoors responsibly. The Seven Principles of Leave No Trace were developed to help educate and guide recreationists in sustainable minimum-impact practices that mitigate or avoid recreation-related impacts. Although Leave No Trace has its roots in backcountry and wilderness, the practices have been adapted so that they can be applied anywhere — from the backcountry, to local parks and your backyard — and for any recreational activity.

THE SEVEN PRINCIPLES 1. PLAN AHEAD AND PREPARE • Know the regulations and special concerns for the area you’ll visit.

• Prepare for extreme weather, hazards and emergencies.

• Schedule your trip to avoid times of high use.

• Visit in small groups when possible. Consider splitting larger groups into smaller groups.

• Repackage food to minimize waste.

• Use a map and compass to eliminate the use of marking paint, rock cairns or flagging.

3. DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY • Pack it in, pack it out. Inspect your campsite and rest areas for trash or spilled foods. Pack out all trash, leftover food and litter.

• To wash yourself or your dishes, carry water 200 feet away from streams or lakes and use small amounts of biodegradable soap. Scatter strained dishwater.

2. TRAVEL AND CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES • Durable surfaces include established trails and campsites, rock, gravel, dry grasses or snow.

• Protect riparian areas by camping at least 200 feet from lakes and streams.

• Good campsites are found, not made. Altering a site is not necessary.

• In popular areas: • Concentrate use on existing trails and campsites.

• Walk single file in the middle of the trail, even when wet or muddy.

• Keep campsites small. Focus activity in areas where vegetation is absent.

• In pristine areas: • Disperse use to prevent the creation of campsites and trails.

• Avoid places where impacts are just beginning.

5. MINIMIZE CAMPFIRE IMPACTS • Campfires can cause lasting impacts to the environment. Use a lightweight stove for cooking, and enjoy a candle lantern for light.

• Where fires are permitted, use established fire rings, fire pans or mound fires.

• Keep fires small. Only use sticks from the ground that can be broken by hand.

• Burn all wood and coals to ash, put out campfires completely, and then scatter cool ashes.

4. LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND • Preserve the past: Examine, but do not touch, cultural or historic structures and artifacts.

• Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them. Some mosses and lichens take decades to grow.

• Avoid introducing or transporting non-native species.

• Do not build structures, furniture or dig trenches.

6. RESPECT WILDLIFE • Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not follow or approach them.

• Never feed animals. Feeding wildlife damages their health, alters natural behaviors, and exposes them to predators and other dangers.

• Protect wildlife and your food by storing rations and trash securely.

• Control pets at all times, or leave them at home.

• Avoid wildlife during sensitive times: nesting, raising young, or winter.

7. BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER VISITORS • Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience.

• Be courteous. Yield to other users on the trail.

• Step to the downhill side of the trail when encountering pack stock (horses on dual-use trails).

• Take breaks and camp away from trails and other visitors.

• Let nature’s sounds prevail. Avoid loud voices and noises.

Others before us have committed themselves to a mission so that we can come along later and find beautiful parklands. In an effort to perpetuate their hard work, and to lead by example and make a kiddush Hashem, COMMSAR is on a mission to do the same. We have a stretch of about 8 miles of hiking trails in Harriman State Park that we maintain (in partnership with the New York–New Jersey Trail Conference), which includes adjusting trail blazes, removing hazards and trash, and making sure the trail is not overgrown with brush or blowdown trees.

We turn to the community with a plea to take this seriously. The natural world around us is so beautiful and peaceful. It is our right and our duty to see to it that it stays that way. This can only be done if we all commit to carry out what we carry in, focus more on exploring with our eyes than with our hands, and remain mentchlich to others on the trail.

Community Search and Rescue (CommSAR) is a volunteer non-profit 501c(3) search and rescue agency covering the Northeast, with emphasis on preventative education and awareness programs for individuals, groups and community agencies. We not only search for the lost in the wilderness, but also maintain trails in the woods, conduct inter-agency exercises and organize community seminars. We save lives through prevention, skill and collaboration.

Have you ever imagined the overwhelming fear the Yidden must have felt inside the walls of Yerushalayim, surrounded by hordes of Roman soldiers? And inside, the Biryonim terrorized the streets — looting, destroying, murdering. The prayers of the Yidden at that time were certainly potent, packed with the kavanah only fear, hope, hunger and faith can bring. May we feel that potency as we remember the loss of Yiddishe life, land, and of course, the heilige Beis Hamikdash — may it be speedily rebuilt, in our days.

SIEGE IS LAID The Romans rarely gave up once siege was laid to a city.

Instead, they’d cut off supply chains, cruelly preventing food and water from reaching the besieged city, hoping to starve the inhabitants out. Sieges could take anywhere from days to years. Capturing Yerushalayim took roughly four years in which the hunger was unbearable and the death count high. Famine was so severe that people resorted to even eating whatever strips of leather or refuse was found. Even excrement, mice and grass were considered a blessing to those who found them.

Children would literally snatch food from their parents hands, and parents from their childrens’.

To make matters worse, inside the city, the Biryonim destroyed or consumed any food they could find, hoping that hunger would entice the Yidden to join the rebel group in fighting the Romans.

BORN TO KILL A share in the spoils of war combined with the defining Roman principles of virtus (battlefield aggression) and disciplina (discipline) meant that Roman soldiers were known as the world’s most terrifying fighters. It was even said that Roman soldiers were as if “born ready-armed.” The bloodthirsty fighters had no qualms about slaughtering even unarmed, peace-seeking Jewish men, women and children. Even the youngest of infants were not spared when a city was captured.

THREE-PRONGED APPROACH The approach the Roman army used in sieges was three-pronged: 1. Damage the defenses of the city under siege 2. Kill as many of the opposition as possible 3. Destroy enemy morale through fear, hunger, acts of brutality, etc.

ROMAN WEAPONRY Much of the Roman artillery were direct improvements of Greek inventions. Where the Greeks had used horsehair, the Romans used sinew; where the Greeks had used wood, the Romans used iron and bronze. With their powerful weaponry,

the Roman army struck fear into the hearts of men wherever they went.

The ballista was a stone-launching machine that Covered hurled heavy battering rams stones into besieged cities with incredible force.

The whirring sound of an incoming stone was said to be absolutely terrifying. We can only imagine how the Yidden felt as large stones rained down upon them with no escape.

Battering rams were used to break down city walls. The rams were so powerful that many walls fell with a single blow. The battering rams typically featured a cover that protected soldiers operating the rams from the terrified people inside the city who’d drop boiling oil or nests of stinging insects on them.

When the famine in Yerushalayim was at its worst, Titus ordered that a battering ram be used to destroy the city’s wall, but when a part of the wall fell, the Romans saw that the Yidden had already erected a new wall behind it. Between those walls a bloody battle ensued, with the Yidden taking victory in that battle. Titus had to take down multiple walls to finally reach the inner parts of the city, and the Beis Hamikdash. On that day, blood flowed like water and thousands were slaughtered.

SPOILS OF WAR Along with carting off the Menorah, paroches and vessels of the Beis Hamikdash, Titus took home thousands of Jewish slaves, many of whom were forced to build the Flavian Amphitheater — more commonly known as the Colosseum. Ten years after the Beis Hamikdash was destroyed, the Colosseum opened as free entertainment for the Roman public. In that arena, Jewish blood once again flowed like water.

Siege towers were built by the Romans to provide them an elevated place to do battle, as well as to observe the city inside. Titus had two siege towers available when he laid siege on Yerushalayim, and ordered new ones built, as well.

The Biryonim took down the towers in acts of sabotage.

A home in the original Cape Cod style

Colonial Revival Cape Cod, an architecture that was popular in the 1930s-1950s

The origins of Cape Cod homes are rooted in 17th century New England, where homes were designed in a manner to withstand the harsh Northeastern winter weather: steep roofs to prevent snow accumulation, low rooms with a large central chimney to keep in the heat and wooden shutters to keep the winds out.

In the 1930s to 1950s, during the period of Colonial Revival architecture, this style enjoyed a resurgence in popularity throughout suburbs and was adapted to modern needs. During this period, Cape Cods were constructed in almost every major city, although the majority remains on the East Coast.

Most of the Cape Cods you see today were built during the Colonial Revival era.

FYI: Though they’ve been around way earlier, the Cape Cod house got its name in the year 1800, when the president of Yale University visited Cape Cod, Massachusetts and coined the term.

ATTRIBUTES: The original Cape Cod style home is a simple, symmetrical single-story (or story-and-a-half) structure that is low and broad. Its roof is steep pitched and gabled. The space above the first floor in the past was sometimes left unfinished as an attic, but is often used for two bedrooms that have sloped ceilings. The original Cape Cod homes were unornamented, with or without windows at the two ends of the gabled roofs. These homes generally have multipaned windows, often with shutters on each side to keep the wind out, as well as a large chimney in the center of the roof to combat New England’s notorious winter chill. Many of the Colonial Revival Cape Cods feature more style, most prominent being the dormer windows, which provide light, space and ventilation to the two bedrooms on the upper level. They often also included a screened-in porch at the side, and their fireplaces, chimneys and shutters serve mostly decorative, as opposed to practical, purposes. Their interiors were adapted too, to include bigger kitchens and rooms and higher-end designs. To complete the look, Cape Cod owners at that time would often install a white picket fence around their property.

PROS: The cottage-like structure makes for a cozy, no-frills, country home, and is nostalgic of older times. No wasted space means lower utility bills and a comfortable little home. The fireplace, a central part of the structure, adds to the homey atmosphere.

Many people go for the sloping eaves, which result in bedrooms with cozy nooks. The steep gabled roof also prevents the buildup of rain or snow. Stylewise, Capes are timeless, never quite being outdated. All in all, a Cape Cod is a great option for firsttime buyers since it’s less expensive than larger homes.

CONS: While Cape Cods are the ideal starter homes, the quarters are cramped for larger families. The sloped ceiling makes the usable space in the upstairs bedrooms quite tight, and it’s hard to properly furnish them. Heating or cooling the upper level may also be difficult if it’s not properly insulated. The wood exterior is quite high maintenance, too.

t was like riding a roller-coaster. Within seconds, your orientation changes from up to down and then back up and down again. At 27, I had been seeking a shidduch for a very long time. And so many times, I had thought, “This is it! He is the one!!” and then… it fell apart. Why couldn’t I find my bashert?

I had been to all the shadchanim and decided to turn to the ultimate ShadchanHashem! I signed up for membership with Tehillim Kollel, who I knew employed sincere and dedicated men to daven for the klal, at one of their daily locations, where Tehillim Kollel representatives daven in an established place each and every day: Amuka, the Kever of Yonasan ben Uziel, renowned for being a holy site for bringing about shidduchim. I then continued my hishtadlus, trying to seek out new shadchanim that I had not yet contacted.

I am ecstatic to share that my personal roller coaster ride with Shidduchim is over.

A few months after signing up, I became engaged to my wonderful chassan! The ultimate Shadchan came through for me!
