I would like to publicly acknowledge a bus driver who goes out of his way to help mothers have an easier day. Every time there is a storm, my daughter’s bus driver pulls up to the curb as far as possible to help us mothers avoid having to step in puddles as we retrieve our children. Last week there was a very strong storm that flooded parts of my street, and the driver actually came up onto the curb as much as he could because he saw a very deep puddle that I would have had to step in otherwise. This bus driver is a baal chesed and should be an inspiration to his fellow drivers. Thank you! We appreciate your efforts! A Mother

A FEW SCREWS CAN SAVE A LIFE I had a clear miracle this past week when a closet we’d purchase for extra pantry space fell onto my three-year-old daughter. Al pi derech hateva she shouldn’t have escaped unscathed; she most certainly should have broken bones, sustained a concussion, or worse. But Hashem’s loving hand protects even the foolish at times, and she walked away with nothing more than a bruise. We should have anchored that closet to the wall. We could have prevented it from falling. I urge you, readers, to take the time to anchor your bookcases and closets, etc., with a few solid screws. It can save a life! R.R.

APATHY THAT HARMS To a Yungerman, Do you remember this past Sunday, when the weather was sweltering hot, and you were leaving the Costco parking lot at about 6:00 p.m.? I happened to pass by when I saw a woman cry and beg you to help her out. Face wet with sweat, she was pleading with you that she feels dehydrated and like she’s about to pass out. (Re: Hey! We’ve Been Robbed, Issue 154) Thanks so much for your wonderful weekly publication! In regard to your articles about crime prevention and the importance of installing security cameras, I would like to add that when installing the system (or even if you have one installed already), please have in mind the community at large and add an additional camera that zooms in on the licence plates of passing vehicles. Such cameras have been very helpful in various crucial investigations in the past. Y.E.K.

(Re: Crime Tidbits, Issue 154) In Issue 154, on page 130, an article mentioned criminals caught with Murphy’s Law. This so-called “law” is defined as stating, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” There is nothing wrong with making fun of criminals, but it is not permissible to adopt even for this purpose the language of non-believers, conveying a message that the world is governed, chas v’shalom, by some humorous “laws” and not by hashgacha and s’char v’onesh. Clearly, this mistake has been made unintention-

(Inbox, Issue 155) I want to share a similar experience I had. I got my learner’s permit a year ago and was practicing with a friend of mine. While driving with him on one of the local streets in Monsey, I was trying to back out of a parking spot when I saw a child on a bike near the sidewalk. Instead of stopping to back, I mistakenly hit the gas pedal and hit the bike! Baruch Hashem, the child wasn’t harmed, but I was so frightened that I quickly put the car into drive mode, and proceeded to drive straight into a car in front of me. The incident was so traumatizing that I stopped driving altogether. Later, a friend asked me why I wasn’t getting driver’s license, so I told him the story and explained that I was very nervous about driving again. He then recommended that I learn to drive the right way, with a regular driving school. This is what I did, and my driving teacher encouraged and instilled confidence in me. What a mistake that I had not gone to a driving school right from the beginning. My message to all new drivers is: Make sure to learn to drive the safe and correct way right from the start. May Hashem protect us all always. A Reader Due to space constraints, it was only possible to print some of the letters we received on the topic of report cards and grades.

RE: FAILURE IS AS FAILURE DOES (Inbox, Issue 154) Though I’m not from Monsey, I visit often, and each time I come, I make sure to pick up a copy of The Monsey View. Thank you for a job well done. As an educator for many years, a letter in the June 27th issue titled “Failure Is as Failure Does” caught my attention. Please allow me to respond. My dear Heartbroken Mother! If your daughter first got B’s on her report card in reading comprehension and fluency, and when you read with her you see that she reads well, but she nevertheless scored F’s at the end of the term, then surely a quick phone call to the teacher will confirm that these marks were written in error! Mistakes can happen! A child who reads well does not get an F on her report card. Perhaps reaching out to the teacher immediately would have been a better option than choosing a public forum to vent your frustration. The report card serves an important function. It is a means of informing parents how well their child is performing in school. Children who aren’t doing well

in school don’t need a report card to tell them that they are failing. The report card doesn’t crush them. They are crushed all year by sitting in the classroom and noticing that everyone around them can read fluently and do independent work easily while they cannot! Don’t view the report card as an instrument used to the detriment of your child. See it for what it is: It is a report for parents. It is there to let parents know in which areas their child needs help and in which areas he or she is doing well. When a third-grader gets a poor grade in reading, there isn’t much he or she can do about it on their own. Most schools have a well-working remedial program for children who can benefit from the extra boost, and many parents take advantage of this or choose to engage private tutoring. As I wrote earlier, perhaps your daughter’s low marks were an error, but if it becomes evident that the marks are truly indicative of your child’s performance, it would be crucial to address the issue. Summer vacation is an ideal time to actively pursue all resources to ensure that your child’s reading is up to par before fourth grade. With best wishes for hatzlacha rabba, C. Netter

Being a mother and teacher for many years, I would like to respond to the distressed mother whose daughter received a few F’s on her report card. What was your goal in printing this letter? To make an uproar and cause other parents to doubt their teachers/schools? You presented one side of the picture. Teachers in general are kind and considerate, and please give them the benefit of the doubt. Should such a problem, or any other issue, occur again, bring it up with your teacher or principal, and if you don’t like how things are run in your school, change schools! Please, do not take away the confidence parents should have in our chinuch staff, because the one who will lose out most is yourself. These negative feelings go over to your very young children, and this is the first step of destruction for you, dear mother, and chas v’shalom, for Klal Yisroel. Remember: We must respect our mechanchim and mechanchos! A Surprised Mother and Teacher

Dear Heartbroken Mother, In your touching letter, it is easy to read between the lines. Allow me to address the points that touch you and me — the Yiddishe mamas. Our offspring are not extensions of ourselves. Their successes are gifts from Hashem. Their failures

are opportunities for us to mold ourselves as well as our children. It is our duty to plan for and employ proper assistance to aid their weaknesses. At the same time, our children need to be believed in and loved unconditionally, no matter their shortcomings. We constantly need to remind them of their precious neshamos with boundless potential and worth. But we need to feel those values at a deep inner level. If we are pained by their weaknesses, the children will feel it, and it will undermine their security. And now, my second point: When our children struggle in specific areas, we need to be truly honest with ourselves in our role as mothers. Ask yourself: What have I contributed to allow these faults to flourish? Have I chosen to deny that my child has a problem? Maybe I wasn’t involved enough with the school to pick up on them? Or perhaps I’ve failed to implement a plan of action to ease the problem? It’s easier, and let’s be honest, immature, to sit back and blame others for issues that, at the end of the day, belong to us. I write these lines only because I’m coming from where you are now. When my boys were in yeshivah, whenever they encountered any difficulty, I always managed to find fault with this maggid shiur, with that mashgiach, and so on. It took a lot of inner work, introspection and brutal honesty to come to terms with what is expected of me and my child to move forward. Blaming others did not get me anywhere. Let us be reminded of the kochos that Hashem gave us in our role as the akeres habayis. I’m convinced that the tools lie in our hands. With loads of siyata d’Shmaya and tefillah, our children will not be crushed by one young, albeit well-meaning, teacher. Wishing you a lot of hatzlacha. Dear Basya,

CHAPTER 14

I am almost perfect on the plan, but I haven’t lost weight in a month. I do sometimes nibble on my children’s dinner, have a few extra nuts and have a bit extra challah every Shabbos, but other than that, I am nearly perfect. Can these small extras really stop my weight loss? Signed, Feeling Stuck

Dear Stuck, Let’s talk science for a moment. It takes a cut of 3,500 calories to lose a pound. Therefore, if one cuts 500 calories per day, they will lose a pound a week. Now let’s discuss the little extras that you are having every day and attach some approximate calorie counts to those extras: • ½ cup of pasta with cheese (a few large spoonfuls) – 200 calories • ¼ cup farfel with 1 tablespoon of oil – 225 calories • 15 glazed almonds – 175 calories • 1 slice extra challah – 150–200 calories per slice • 1 tablespoon extra dip – 100 calories As you see, it is extremely easy

70 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 11, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

to mindlessly eat an extra 500 calories a day, while still feeling “on track”! So be careful with those little nibbles and extras, and see if your weight loss continues. If, after making sure not to add in small extras here and there you are still not losing weight, it may be time to readjust your plan. R. Labin 845.356.0530 Devastating Update on Klatzkin Family Many may recall the news in February of Beit Shemesh father of 9 Eliyahu Klatzkin. Klatzkin was diagnosed in 2016 with an aggressive case of cancer. For many months, the family fought for his survival, including flying to the United States to undergo extensive surgery to remove two cancerous tumors. After the tumors were removed, but the illness tragically remained, Klatzkin returned to Israel to begin what was then his only hope: medication which was not covered by the national insurance. Thus began the family’s terrifying monthly race, to acquire the $14,000 per month necessary to procure the life-prolonging medication. In a desperate appeal to the public, Eliyahu’s wife pleaded: “Our kids need their Abba back.” The ‘race,’ however, was not won. We are pained to report that on Monday of this week, July 2nd, Eliyahu lost his battle with cancer. 9 children satshiva now in their Beit Shemesh home. The youngest is just one year old. A friend of the family recalls the bris of the youngest, which took place in a time when most knew that Eliyahu’s survival was unlikely:

“There wasn’t a dry eye as Reb Eliyahu was Sandek of his newborn son,” he writes, “as everyone was thinking about the poor child, doomed to a life without a father, a life without anyone to walk him to Shul, a life with no one to learn with him at AvosUbanim.” An emergency fund has been started on the widow’s behalf. Mrs. Klatzkin is now on her own with a large family, and deeply burdened by immense medical debt, as well as the other expenses which went unpaid during their period of financial strain. During his lifetime, Rabbi Klatzkin took pride in providing for his family. Now, donations are being saved to help his wife pick up the pieces. The campaign’s goal is to allow the young mother to mourn her husband in peace, and to provide a stable future for herself and her children. Parshas Matos-Masei By: Malka Schneps

“PLEASE, COME SIT DOWN,” said Batsheva when her cleaning lady arrived, gesturing toward a seat by the kitchen table. “I would like to speak with you.” “Okay,” replied the cleaning lady, wiping a trickle of nervous sweat from her forehead. “What about?” “Well, let’s go back a few days. I went to my desk to take out an envelope of money that I had placed there, but it wasn’t there.” Batsheva looked at the cleaning lady, who was wiping away more nervous sweat. “And do you know why it wasn’t there?” The cleaning lady glanced toward the door, but she did not leave. She looked nervously at Batsheva. “Well, I was curious why it wasn’t there, so I reviewed the security camera footage until I found out. I do have cameras in my house, after all. I was very disappointed to see that you took the money.” “I will never do it again,” insisted the cleaning lady. “Of course you won’t do it again, because I cannot keep an employee who steals.” Batsheva leaned across the table and looked at the cleaning lady. “Do you know what the worst part of this story is? The money in that envelope was a bonus I had set aside for you because you do such a good job. I went to look for the envelope so I could give it to you. If you had been honest, you would have had both your bonus and your job. Now you only have your bonus.” “Well, if the money was really mine, then it wasn’t actually stealing, was it? So shouldn’t I be able to keep my job?” asked the cleaning lady cleverly. “It is true that the money in that envelope was to be yours, and in that sense I have not lost money because of this incident — but you did not know that at the time when you took the money. A relationship is not merely a set of rules and technicalities; a relationship also involves feelings, intentions and respect. Our relationship has been broken because my trust has been broken. You broke my trust. I’m sorry, but I have to let you go.” It says in Parshas Matos, “V’im heini aviha… VaHashem yislach lah… — But if her father disallows her on the day he hears it, all her vows and her prohibitions that she has imposed upon herself shall not stand, Hash-

76 / THE MONSEY VIEW

em will forgive her because her father disallowed her” (Bamidbar 30:6). You might wonder, if a woman’s father or husband cancelled her vow, why would she need forgiveness from Hashem? Rashi explains it through an example of a woman who had taken a vow of nazirus. The woman’s husband heard about the vow and cancelled it, but the woman, unaware that her vow has been cancelled, broke her vow by drinking wine and coming in contact with a dead body. The question arises: Does this woman require Hashem’s forgiveness or not? Technically, she did nothing wrong — after all, she had no longer been bound by the vow of nazirus when she drank the wine. So why should she require forgiveness? The answer is that we have a relationship with Hashem. The rules and mitzvos contained within the Torah provide us with the guidelines to this relationship, but a relationship is not only a set of rules and technicalities; our intentions matter as well. The woman in Rashi’s example intended to transgress her vow, and thus she trampled on her relationship with Hashem. Just as the cleaning lady in the story above claimed innocence based on a technicality — how could she steal what was already hers? — so, too, might the woman in Rashi’s example. We must not get so caught up in the finer details of Torah life that we lose sight of the “big picture” of what a Torah life is all about. How can we keep sight of the big picture of our relationship with Hashem when inundated by so many details of halacha? When we check for bugs in our produce, we can remind ourselves that Hashem wants us to be kadosh. When we daven, we can focus on connecting to Hashem and the fact that He wants that connection, and not just say the words out of obligation. When we light Shabbos candles, we can rejoice in our ability to bring the light of Torah into this world, which is why the reward for lighting Shabbos candles is children who are talmidei chachamim. May we all keep our relationship with Hashem strong, not only by following the “rules and regulations,” but by keeping our intentions pure.

West Nile Virus Found in Ramapo Mosquitoes THE FIRST MOSQUITOES of the year to test positive for the West Nile virus in the Lower Hudson Valley area have been reported in Ramapo. According to The Journal News, the New York State Department of Health confirmed that the infected mosquitoes were taken from a trap located in an unidentified location in the Town of Ramapo during the week of June 29. The county routinely tests for West Nile virus in mosquitoes in an effort to track the virus, which is spread by mosquitoes and can cause serious illness in some instances, particularly in those over 50. The Center for Disease Control reported that West Nile is a seasonal virus that typically peaks in the summer and lasts into the fall. Symptoms can develop in three

to fourteen days in approximately 20 percent of those who contract West Nile after being bitten by an infected mosquito, with most recovering from the virus without any medical intervention. More serious cases can present with neurological issues, as well as flulike symptoms such as headache, fever, rashes, stiff neck, nausea and swollen lymph glands. Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert advised anyone who displays symptoms of the virus to contact their doctor immediately. The best course of action to avoid West Nile is to prevent mosquito bites by: • Using mosquito repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or lemon eucalyptus oil. Check all warning labels

• •

before applying any of these items on babies. Placing netting on strollers to prevent babies from being bitten. Making sure that your window screens are in place and in good condition to keep unwanted visitors out. Limiting sources of standing water, which are optimal mosquito breeding sites, by emptying standing water in kiddie pools, flower pots, bird baths, buckets, barrels and discarded tires. Drilling holes in swings, slides, recycling bins and garbage cans if they tend to accumulate standing water. Staying indoors whenever possible during peak mosquito hours from dusk to dawn.

Safe Medication Disposal Day Scheduled for Sunday SAFE MEDICATION disposal has long been a difficult problem, with previously used methods of discarding or flushing surplus drugs down the toilet presenting possible safety and health hazards. Drug take-back days have proven to be an effective means of getting out-of-date or unused medicines, which pose a risk to children, out of the house so that they can be safely destroyed. While previously scheduled local takeback days have been scheduled on Shabbos, Rockland County has announced its first ever take-back day to be held on a Sunday in order to best serve members of the local Jewish community. The event will be coordinated

80 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 11, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

by the Spring Valley Police Department on Sunday, July 15, from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. at 58 N. Myrtle Avenue near Eli’s Bagels. Anyone who has any outdated or unused medications in their home is encouraged to bring them to the event so that they can be safely destroyed. Medications and other household items that require special disposal, including paints, aerosol cans, gasoline, chemicals, compact and fluorescent lightbulbs, batteries, small Freon appliances and electronics can also be dropped off

from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Monday through Friday at the county’s hazardous household waste facility located at 25 Fireman’s Memorial Drive in Pomona.

Eighteen days had elapsed since the disappearance of a soccer team of 12 boys and their coach in a Thai cave system, when the last members of the team were finally extricated in a complex rescue operation. The last phase of the rescue commenced on Tuesday, 10 a.m. in Thailand (11 p.m. Monday ET). Nineteen divers entered the cave, many of them on their third mission in just three days, hoping to finally bring the entire team out. Across the world, people waited breathlessly, until nine hours later, when the last boy emerged. The rescue operation on Tuesday was the third part in a threeday rescue; four members were rescued on Sunday, June 8, four on Monday, June 9, and the four final members and their coach on Tuesday. The stronger boys were rescued first. Every step of the extraction was risky in what was probably the hardest mission the rescue team had

82 / THE MONSEY VIEW

ever taken on. Fast-moving shallow water, its color referred to by a Thai Navy SEAL as “cafe latte,” made traversing through the 2.5 miles of the cave’s dark, tight and twisting passages treacherous. Each boy was fitted with full scuba gear and was accompanied by two divers to whom he was attached to by a thin line to help him dive through submerged parts of the cave. The hardest pinch to pass

through is fully submerged and so narrow that the rescue diver alongside the boy held the boy’s oxygen tank in front of him when squeezing through. An isolation ward was prepared in Chiang Rai hospital in anticipation of the successful rescue of the team, where the 13 boys are being treated. The first four boys to be rescued were allowed to be seen by their parents through a glass window. Two of the boys may be suffering from pneumonia infections, though Thai health officials say that, overall, the first two groups are “healthy and smiling.” On Tuesday morning, the doctor’s prognosis was that “This morning, all eight are in good health, with no fever and in a good mood. They miss their home and they are happy.” The group is expected to be kept in the hospital for observation for at least seven days, because of risk of rare infections and due to their weakened immune systems.

Timeline: JUNE 23 Twelve members of a soccer team, ages 11 to 16, together with their 25-year-old coach, enter Thailand's Tham Luang Nang Non cave. They are unable to exit when a sudden rainstorm floods the entrance to the cave. A search and rescue mission begins. Local officials find bicycles locked to a fence and bags and sandals close to the entrance.

JUNE 24 Handprints and footprints believed to be the boys’ are found. Relatives start to keep vigil outside the cave. The search is suspended due to rising waters.

JUNE 25 Thai Royal Navy SEAL divers enter the cave.

JUNE 26 Rushing floodwaters force divers out of the cave.

JUNE 27 U.S. military personnel, pararescuemen and survival specialists, as well as British diving experts join the search.

inside the cave, more equipment is flown in by plane, and hundreds of air tanks and important supplies are pullied into the cave.

JULY 2 Two British divers find all 12 boys and their coach alive in the cave, perched on a shelf above the floodwaters. The news is greeted with jubilation, but attention soon turns to the difficult task of getting the boys out.

after his oxygen runs out in the cave system, proving the riskiness of the operation before them.

JULY 7 Rescue efforts heighten due to forecast of heavy rains and depleting oxygen levels inside the cave, though rescue operations chief says that boys are not ready to dive to safety.

JULY 8

Medical help and supplies, fresh water, food and blankets are brought, as rescuers explore rescue options.

Eighteen expert divers enter the cave and emerge after 11 hours, as night falls, with four boys. The team takes a break to rest and to replenish oxygen and other supplies.

JULY 4

JULY 9

Boys are taught to use diving equipment, as teams pump out water around the clock to help clear a path for divers.

A 9-hour rescue mission extracts four more boys at dusk.

JULY 3

JULY 5 Expected rains worry authorities.

JULY 6 One Thai Navy SEAL diver dies

JULY 10 A third attempt is made for the four remaining boys and their coach, finally bringing them all out to safety. The three remaining Navy SEALS and a medical doctor leave the cave, too.

JUNE 28 Heavy duty pumps are brought, although downpours temporarily halt the rescue.

JUNE 29 Teams from China join the rescue effort.

JUNE 30 Australia sends their experts. A break in the rain allows divers to reach further inside the cave, but they are still a distance from where the boys are believed to be.

“Rabi (Yehudah Hanasi) would say: ‘Which is the proper path for man to choose for himself? Whatever beautifies the one who does it and beautifies him [in the eyes of] mankind.’” (Avos 2:1) THE PURPOSE OF A YID is to be fully committed to serving Hashem. We try to fulfill this obligation by davening three times each day, learning whenever we can, working to sustain our families and keeping them on the derech haTorah, and providing our children with the proper chinuch. In this mishnah, however, the Tanna adds another condition. Rabi tells us that the proper path is one that “beautifies the one who does it and beautifies him [in the eyes of] mankind.” What is the meaning of this, and why is it necessary? When serving Hashem, our avodah often becomes systematic with time. We try to protect ourselves by remaining in an environment that is sheltered from outside disturbances, and we keep “following the system” and doing things the same way again and again. Everyone recognizes that today it is so much easier to follow the path of avoseinu hakdoshim, who fought so much with their exceptional emunah to ensure that the derech haTorah will remain in their families for generations to come. Their living conditions were much worse than ours. They didn’t have all the comforts we have today, such as a choice of shuls, minyanim, mikvaos, kosher food, clothing, Yiddish schools in spacious buildings with heating and cooling systems, and so much more. For them, the path of Torah was much more difficult and was strewn with numer-

ous obstacles. If so, why is it so hard for us to find time to learn and daven properly, without interruptions and distractions? Why are we not consumed with the desire to connect to Hashem?! In the second part of birchas haTorah we ask that Hashem should “make sweet the words of Torah… and we, and our children and our grandchildren… should all know Your name.” Chazal teach us that the only way to remember Torah is by being truly amazed by every piece of Torah that we learn. Of course, we can only be amazed

The real connection occurs only when there is mutual enjoyment; when Hashem enjoys us, His children, and we enjoy and appreciate the opportunity to connect to our Father in Heaven. if we fully enjoy Torah learning. Thus, acquiring real Torah knowledge is only possible by becoming connected to and truly enjoying Torah. The same applies to davening. Davening is an opportunity to connect to Hashem, but the real connection occurs only when there is mutual enjoyment; when Hashem enjoys us, His children, and we enjoy and appreciate the opportunity to connect to our Father in Heaven. A boy once came home from cheder with a test on the parsha that his parents had to sign. When the father opened the test, he saw a mark of 20%. “Tell me,” the father told his

son, “do you understand why you are davening and learning Torah each day?” “Yes, because Hashem told us to do so,” the child replied. “True, but why did Hashem tell us to do so?” the father asked. “Because that’s what He said.” “Hashem told us to do this,” the father explained, “because He wants us to be connected to Him, so that He can protect us and give us many good things. It’s in our best interest to be connected to Hashem. When you daven and learn, don’t do it for me, for your melamdim or for Hashem. Do it for yourself. Do you want a connection with Hashem that is only 20 percent there, or do you want more?” The boy clearly understood his father’s message and promised to put in more effort into his work. Hashem gave us the Torah not only so that we should be connected to Him because He wants it this way, but also so that we can gain pleasure from our relationship with Him. Hashem desires a mutually enjoyable relationship, because only when that connection is sweet and enjoyable will it remain strong and forever. This, indeed, is what Rabi Yehuda Hanasi is teaching us by saying that we must choose a path that will beautify us. When we truly take pleasure in our avodas Hashem, our avodah will beautify us from the inside, and the result will be a beautiful, mutually enjoyable connection that will help us merit Hashem’s protection, hashpa’as tovos and yeshuos in every aspect of our life. When Is A Good Time To Follow A Diet? You don't have to look very far to notice that the way we are going about losing weight is not the long term solution.

Instead, what we see is those of us that are able How many times do you have to nag your kids to stick to the structure of the diet achieve some or be nagged by your parents/spouse to get something done. level of success.

Popular diets.. Nutritionist.. The advancement and discussion of nutrition knowledge is all critical.

It seems that what makes people lose weight isn't a secret ingredient at all but rather it is the structure provided by dieting.

I mean, if we didn’t advance in our knowledge we would all still be eating trans-fat in the name of health.

This is even more evident when you look at the research regarding breakfast.

Nutritionist are very knowledgeable people. They are well versed when it comes to the relationship that food plays with the chemical balance of the body. With this depth of knowledge they can design a plan that, if followed, can predict how a person's physical and mental being should be a couple of years down the line. This is critical for those of us that need to have our body down to a science such as athletes. On the other hand those of us that don't really have so much at stake when it comes to our weight Taking extreme measures such as; calorie counting, rigid meal plans, nutrition timing, and so on are all great strategies to help bring attention to what you are eating but are completely unnecessary. Yes, we need to be healthy however, we don't have to have the physical aspect down to the tee. Most people have the idea that the special ingredient that a diet promotes, may it be the removal of an entire food groups, shakes or whatever, is the reason they lose weight.

Everyone believes that breakfast is the 'most important meal of the day.' On the days you eat breakfast you are expected to lose weight. On the days you don't eat breakfast you will gain weight. When you look at the science, you will find that there are studies that show eating breakfast helped with weight loss. There were also those that showed skipping breakfast helped with weight loss. The common dominant between the experiments were that in both studies they put the participants on a daily routine.

On the other hand if you create your own healthy structure - a structure that aligns with the things you value most, how much more likely are you to stick to the routine? When it comes to building a routine it can become very overwhelming. Where do you start? From my professional opinion after working with hundreds of different clients, the best place to start is by creating action driven goals that are aligned with your core values. Your values as a person. This is where we start at the Smith System. When you find your true values in life and you start living in harmony with them you will find that everything in your life improves substantially. Let's not forget long term weight loss success.

Having structure in your day is what helps you lose weight!

I know for some of you this may be hard to believe (I used to be a skeptic myself)

With this in mind, if you want to achieve long term success, you need to build a structure in your day that will sustain your weight loss.

But the truth is that you too can have the body and the life you want to have.

Let me ask you something. Would you like to live your life the way you want or would you rather live your life under someone else's terms? When you go on a diet plan you are living your life under someone else rule.
As humans we hate being told what to do.

If that was the case, then only some of the dietswould bring results and the other diets wouldn't If you have children or you are a child yourself work at all. you know exactly what I am talking about! That isn't happening at all...

The question is are you ready and willing to put in the work? If you think you are then I would love to show you how you can accomplish that. This winter I am going to be putting together a work shop. where we will work together to create the foundation you need to live a fulfilling life. The workshop is limited to 20 people. Superpops

Recipes and Photography by: Ruchi from @Cookstas Why do I call these Superpops? These refreshing and healthy popsicles are most definitely super — because they are each made with fresh superfruits. Superfruits refer to nutrient-rich fruits that are very beneficial because of their high amounts of antioxidants in the right combinations. The best perk of adding these fruits to your day is that they’re just so appealing! When preparing these recipes, feel free to rearrange the layers of fruit to your liking. The lemonade recipe I included is more watery than the standard recipe to make the pops more firm and slightly less sweet. You may adjust the water amount depending on your taste.

Strawberries, like most berries, boast lots of vitamin C and folate. Pair them with mangoes — another superfruit that has been shown to fight certain types of cancer and aid in memory and concentration — and you’ve got a sizeable team of nutrients at work.

StrawberryMango Superpops

DIRECTIONS INGREDIENTS For the lemonade: 4 T. sugar ½ cup hot water

1. To make the lemonade, stir the sugar and hot water in a large pitcher until dissolved. Add the lemon juice and cold water and mix well. Alternatively, you can mix 2 cups of store-bought lemonade (I prefer organic) with 1 cup of water. Set aside. 2. If using frozen strawberries, do not thaw. Slice the strawberries thinly and place into popsicle molds, about one to two slices per pop. They should fill approximately a third of the pop.

6 T. freshly squeezed lemon juice (approximately 3 lemons)

3. Peel and finely dice the mango. Add the mango pieces to the molds until filled two-thirds of the way.

2 cups cold water

4. Place another one to two strawberry slices to top off each mold.

1 cup strawberries (frozen or fresh) 1 ripe mango

94 / THE MONSEY VIEW

5. Slowly pour the lemonade mixture into each mold, leaving ¼-inch headspace. You may have extra, depending on how much fruit is in the mold. Feel free to drink the rest or save it for another Superpops recipe. 6. Freeze for about an hour (freezing time will vary) until the tops of the pops are just beginning to freeze. Insert a popsicle stick into the center of each mold and return to the freezer. Freeze until completely frozen.

I associate the fruits inside these Superpops with sun. They just look so bright and happy! When it’s hot and sunny and you’re spending the day outdoors, you will be pleased to have these on hand. Feel free to use either type of kiwi; golden kiwi is sweeter, while the standard green ones are more tart. Both have an amazing blend of soluble and insoluble fiber to help with digestion and weight loss. Oranges and pineapples both reduce inflammation and boost your immune system.

Alternatively, you can mix 2 cups of store-bought lemonade (I prefer organic) with 1 cup of water. Set aside. 2. Cut the pineapple into very small chunks and add to the bottoms of popsicle molds, filling a quarter of each pop. 3. Slice the orange into ¼-inch slices and remove the rind by cutting around the flesh with a sharp paring knife. Cut the slices in halves or quarters and add one to two to each pop. 4. Peel and slice the kiwi into very thin slices. Add one slice to each pop.

Once you’ve mastered the other two recipes, give it all you’ve got and try these rainbow pops. It’s a perfect way to use up any extra fruit in the house. Including an array of color in your Superpops guarantees a show-stopping presentation that will leave everyone wanting another pop! In addition to the fruits in the other recipes, these include a blood orange (pricey, but worth it!) for color and nutrition, and lowcarb blueberries with a ton of antioxidants.

Admit it, at least once during the summer you think to yourself: How did people survive without air conditioning?! For me, that thought occurs at least twice daily when I dash between home and the arriving school bus. Because, let’s face it, air conditioning is clearly the world’s best invention, with indoor plumbing following behind as a close second. But air conditioning has only been around since 1902, and didn’t become widely available until nearly midcentury, meaning that people suffered in the heat for thousands of years!

But what if… those people didn’t actually suffer? (At least not everybody, all of the time.) Could it be that some ancient wisdom helped people feel cool when the temperature began to rise? Let’s explore the ways humanity has survived in the hottest of times and places.

ANCIENT EGYPT There’s good reason that ancient Egypt was considered the pinnacle of the advanced world in its heyday. Despite the scorching desert weather, which often reaches an average of 104 degrees, Egyptians beat the heat by using evaporative cooling, a technique that brought down the temperature in their homes to a more bearable degree. Mats made of reeds were soaked and then hung in the windows of Egyptian homes, allowing the wind to blow through them and evaporate the water.

104 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 11, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

When that happened, the temperature dropped, leaving inhabitants much more comfortable. Many years later, when the English occupied India, they used this same method by leaving the ends of cotton/linen curtains in a bucket of water. The curtain wicked up the water, and the breeze would filter through it, creating a cooling sensation. Back in Egypt, Paroh was also kept cool by fan-bearers who'd wave ostrich feather fans near him to create a breeze. yakhch훮l

PERSIA Over in Persia, ice was to be had year-round. The invention of the yakhcha-l, a conical building used for ice (and sometimes food) storage meant that royalty could have iced desserts in even the hottest of weather. These buildings were actually so affordable that nearly every member of society had access to a yakhcha-l. An integral part of Persian life, they are still being used today. Built with thick walls of water-resistant material, the yakhcha-l has a large underground space in which water channeled from an aqueduct rests. When air enters the yakhcha-l, the cold air comes into contact with the water and freezes it, while the hot air exits through the opening at the top. In this way, water frozen during the cold season is able to retain its chill even in the summer. Some yakhcha-ls also feature b창dgirs, or windcatchers. B창dgirs are found atop many Middle Eastern buildings, not just in Persia. Some are open only to one side, while others can have as many as eight openings. They work on the same principle: bring fresh wind in, move hot air out.

VICTORIAN ERA Air drawn down into interior of house

VICTORIAN ERA, ENGLAND The Victorians used architectural design to combat heat. Taking into consideration the nature of heat to rise, homes were designed with high ceilings to give inhabitants extra room between themselves and the hot air. Tall recessed windows placed on either side of the house acted as windcatchers, shaded the inside of the building from direct sun entry,

and harnessed the power of cross-ventilation. Covered porches also helped protect homes from direct sunlight, as well as gave the occupants a shady place to sit out of doors. Covered porches, especially wrap-arounds, were also extremely popular in the American south.

DESERT BEDOUIN DESERT BEDOUIN

Hand fan

Contrary to everything you’ve ever been told about dressing for the summer, it turns out the best color to wear in the heat is actually black, as the Bedouin are known to wear in the desert. But it all depends on how it is worn. While we’ve all been taught that white reflects the sun’s heat, we were never told that it also reflects our internal body heat — causing it to come right back at us. Black, on the other hand, absorbs both the sun’s heat and our own heat. The trick to dissipating those heats is to wear loose-fitting clothing, like bedouin robes. This captures the breeze and pushes heat out of the clothing, leaving you feeling a lot cooler. Also seemingly contrary to common wisdom is the fact that the Bedouin drink hot tea as a cooling mechanism. How does that work? Similar to Egyptian evaporative cooling, tea causes the body to sweat, which is then whisked away by breeze, after which the drinker feels cooler. Note that this only works in low-humidity environments.

CHINA

homes in caves

The imperial families of ancient China enjoyed “the cool room,” in which water was sprayed from the ceiling and wind was produced from a fan, ensuring that all who entered were treated to a form of ancient air conditioning. One of the earliest types of fans was a simple mechanism in which a door panel was hung from the ceiling and connected to foot pedals by a string. By operating the foot pedal, the panel would swing to and fro, causing a breeze. Hand fans were also popular throughout the ages in China, as well as in Japan, and were appreciated not only for their cooling capabilities, but also as works of art. In some areas of China, as well as many other places in the world, people made their homes in caves (and some still do!). These caves remain at a stable temperature year-round, typically ranging from 50–70°, depending on location. Porcelain pillows were also smooth and cool, helping to relieve the heat, though otherwise, comfort seems questionable to me...

walls lowered the temperature of their houses. Stone homes in general, such as is common in the Middle East, retain cold more easily than wooden or brick ones.

water fountains

As part of the Homestead Act, which allowed settlers to acquire a large plot of land for cheap, homesteaders were required to plant at least 40 acres of trees on a 160-acre plot. Wise homesteaders planted trees around their homes to provide protection, shade and a filter for hot air. Swimming holes were popular in rural spots for sweltering days, though cities had a notable lack of amenities for cooling down its inhabitants. Tenement housing was the worst, with many apartments packed together, thereby increasing the heat load, and it was nearly impossible to create a crossbreeze to cool the complex. Residents spent many a summer night on tenement roofs, trying to catch a breeze. Some big cities provided water fountains where people could dunk their heads to cool off. Awnings, too, provided a bit of shade in lieu of luxurious wrap-around porches. For the upper class though, it was considered uncouth to feel hot — so they just pretended they weren’t!

OTHER WAYS TO KEEP COOL Okay, let’s face it. Even with all of those great inventions of way back when, people were hot, though they may have had some relief at times. (The mesiras nefesh of previous generations to sit and learn despite the heat is astounding!) In our generation, we are so blessed to have air conditioning, but did you know that much of the world still doesn’t have it? Here are some other ways to get cool: TAKE A NAP! Many people in hot climates break up the day by taking a nap, accomplishing everything they need to during the cooler morning and evening hours. (Ever tried shopping at 2 p.m. in Eretz Yisroel?) WEAR THE RIGHT MATERIAL Cotton, cotton, cotton! Need I say more? ELECTRIC FANS Window fans can provide tremendous relief when one fan is set to suck fresh air in, while the other is set to funnel hot air out.

Add a spritz of water to the fan’s breeze, and you’ve got it made! You can also put a block of ice in front of a fan to get similar cooling. SLEEP IN A HAMMOCK An invention of South America, the hammock is not only cozy, but provides great ventilation while you sleep. Not only does it allow body heat to dissipate, you can feel the breeze more easily as well. ICE PACKS Freeze a large bottle of water, put it in a pillowcase, and cuddle it like a teddy as you drift off to sleep. This cools the core temperature, leaving you more comfortable. Alternatively, you can use regular ice packs on the neck or other areas to bring relief. WET LINEN It’s probably not a great idea to completely soak your bed, but slightly wetting linen when in a situation of no AC can help you manage the heat. ACCLIMATIZE If all else fails, you’ll just have to get used to it. In general, acclimating to a new situation of heat (or cold) takes around two weeks. Over the course of time, the body learns a new normal, and rebalances its physiological response to temperatures only a short time prior considered extreme.

Summer’s a season for the kids. No one’s badgering them to pull on their hats and mittens, there’s no homework to do, and the world is suddenly larger and brighter. And hotter. But who cares? All they need to do is get wet and even wetter, and what better fun is there, anyway? Here are some ideas to get you started, and remember: The more kids playing, the more fun it’ll be!

2. 1.

Fill ‘Em Up This game needs at least four players. Take two empty seltzer bottles, and cut a 2-inch hole into the front of each of them. The holes should be positioned approximately halfway up the bottle. Tie a string around each bottle, leaving a long string hanging on each side. Position the bottles onto the heads of two players, using the dangling string to secure it around their chin. Two additional players should be armed with filled squirt guns, and each should partner with one of their bottlewearing friends. The players with the bottles should be equal distances away from the players with the squirt guns, and the game is on! Who can fill their bottle faster? Disclaimer: Some water might miss the bottle…

112 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 11, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Aim… and Splash! Divide the players into two teams, and set each team up with a bunch of water balloons and a colander. Taking turns so that each kid can get a chance to get wet, have one player from each team stand with a colander on top of their head, and have a second player from each team toss a filled water balloon into the colander. Which team will manage to catch all their water balloons? And even more fun, how many of them will pop over their heads?

3.

Pass the Balloon Give “Pass the Ball” a little more “pop,” and pass around water balloons instead. And whoever is the one “to hold it last,” gets to pop the water balloon over their head. And no gentle tapping; only a splash counts!

4.

Water Snake This is another twist on an old classic. Arrange all players in a semicircle. Position a hose on the ground directly across from them, and sweep it from side to side. Players should jump whenever the stream reaches their feet, and whoever gets their feet wet is out!

5.

Squirt Gun Race Punch a small hole onto the bottom of two (or more, depending on how many players you want competing at a time) heavier plastic cups. Thread each cup onto a long measure of string (approximately the length of a medium-sized room), and hang the two (or more) strings horizontally side by side. Hand each player a squirt gun, and position them in front of a cup so that they should face the open side of the cup, and not the bottom with the hole. Now one... two... three... squiiirt! Who will be the first to push their cup all the way to the end of the string, using only the force of water to get it there?

6.

Balls in a Square This activity can be enjoyed by even very young children. To play, form a large square on the ground (measuring approximately 15 feet x 15 feet) using string (or chalk, if it’s on pavement). Place balls of varying sizes and weights inside the square, and hand the player a hose. The player should then use the force of the water to propel all the balls outside of the square. Older players: Form two squares, fill them both with balls, and have two players compete against each other to see who can clear their square first!

7.

C R ED I T W W W. A L L FO R T HEB OY S .COM

Freeze! This is another game played with two teams and is great for older kids. The night before this game is played, take two extra-large T-shirts, drench them in water, and freeze them individually in plastic bags. Make sure the T-shirts are folded and excess water is squeezed out before you freeze them. When it’s time to play, hand each team a frozen T-shirt, and have them choose a player from their team who will actually have to put it on! Players will try to defrost this T-shirt as quickly as possible, and the team whose player first wears their T-shirt wins!

For Toddlers

What is more fun than splashing, pouring and spilling water? Set up your toddler outside with a few basins and containers filled with water, along with plastic cups, spoons, eye droppers, funnels and whatever else you can think of. Color the water with food coloring for added fun, and if your child knows colors, you can even add color-coordinating balls and have them put each ball in matching water! For preschool-aged children, you can add some colored ice cubes to up the fun factor.

Half Empty, or Half Full? Line up a few rows of plastic cups on a table, and fill half of them with water. The filled ones should be randomly scattered among the empty ones. The kids playing should line up a fair distance away from the table, and taking turns, one child at a time should approach the table blindfolded, choose a cup (no peeking or checking!) and turn it over upside-down over their head. Which lucky choosers will get splashed? Older players: Have a second blindfolded player choose the cup for you, so you don’t know what’s coming! C R E D I T: W W W . P L AY P A R T Y P L A N . C O M

For the Pool Scrabble Scramble Cut a bunch of cellulose sponges in half, and draw a letter onto each half. For added fun, the back of each “tile” can get another letter. Toss the sponges into the pool, and players can race to form words! Younger players: Have the younger kids look out for easy two-, three- or four-letter words they can form. Set difficulty level based on age and abilities. Older players: Divide older players into two teams, and have them scramble to collect sponges and form words. The team with the longest word wins!

Ping Pong Toss Throw a bunch of ping pong balls into the water, and players should race to find them and toss them into an empty tube. Younger players: Kids who are just learning to swim can challenge themselves by trying to clear the pool of ping pong balls all by themselves. Older players: Older kids can compete in teams, each with their own tube. They can then either compete to see which team will land more ping pong balls, or color half the ping pong balls before the game, assign one sort to each team, and then race to see which team can first locate and toss all their ping pong balls into their tube!

When frozen classics get boring and elaborate desserts get messy, don’t give up just yet! Here are some simple frozen treats you can make without shlepping out that blender or heating your oven.

118 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 11, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Easy Sandwich Ice Cream

ChocolateBanana Bites

Combining two old-time favorites, these ice cream sandwiches are simple to make, using classics like chocolate chip cookies and Dixie cups. Working with one at a time while leaving the rest frozen, run a butter knife around the ice cream and remove from cup. Slice in half, then place each half between two large chocolate chip cookies. Wrap in plastic wrap and freeze.

A fuel-boosting treat, these can be made simply as chocolate-covered bananas or taken up a notch with a peanut butter filling. Slice overripe bananas and freeze on a cookie sheet. Melt chocolate, adding a bit of coconut oil, if desired, for smoother consistency. Using a toothpick, dip frozen banana slices in chocolate and freeze again on a cookie sheet. For a nuttier treat, spread peanut butter over one banana slice, cover with another slice, then freeze. Once frozen, dip in melted chocolate and refreeze.

Fresh Fruit Pops Turn fruit into a refreshing summer treat by making these pops. Slice fruits and/or berries, place them in ice pop molds, then fill with lemonade, soda — or coconut water for an even healthier treat!

Cookies and Milk Take your childhood cookies and milk to a whole 'nother level by turning them into frozen treats! Dip sandwich cookies in heavy cream and freeze immediately on parchment-lined sheets. Redip once frozen for a richer cream. Vanilla yogurt also works beautifully!

Yogurt Drops

Less-Mess Ice Pops

Reminiscent of my favorite childhood treats that I no longer find in the groceries, these yogurt bites are as healthy as they are fun to eat! Fill a Ziploc bag with Greek yogurt, then pipe onto a parchmentlined cookie sheet. Optional: Sprinkle yogurt drops with sprinkles before freezing. Alternatively, this can also be made in a fruity version by using fruit puree (or applesauce). Note: yogurt bites are best consumed straight out of the freezer.

What if our ices could melt into… solids? This may sound unfeasible, but it is, in fact, possible! Using jello as its base, these ice pops “melt” into a gel-like consistency as opposed to liquid! Though they may not be 100 percent dripless, they certainly drip less. For each package of jello, add ¼ cup sugar, 1 cup boiling water, stir well and then add 1 cup lukewarm water. Freeze and enjoy!

Magic Yogurt Pops

Rainbow Trifle Bowls

Making homemade yogurt pops can’t get easier than these, made directly in their cups! Cut a slit in the yogurt cover, insert a popsicle stick, and freeze. When serving, run lukewarm water over the bottom part of the cups for a half minute to ease removal.

Turn old-fashioned freeze pops into a statement! Defrost freeze pops for about 5 minutes, then pour them into a trifle bowl to create a striking dessert!

120 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 11, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Flavor-Changing Ice Drinks Refreshing for both adults and kids, this summer treat adds a splash of color to your party! Make colorful ice cubes using soda, Kool-Aid or melted freeze pops. Fill cup with ice cubes, then fill with lemonade or soda, and enjoy the flavor change as the ice cubes melt!

Glitter Grapes Frozen grapes have always been a goto in our home, but these glitter grapes are a winner! Rinse grapes in water and fill bowls with jello powder. While grapes are still damp but not dripping wet, roll grapes in jello and freeze on parchmentlined sheets. I prefer double coating them for richer flavor. Keep frozen until ready to serve.

Magic Slushies Watch soda turn into slush right before your eyes! This takes practice, but it’s well worth it! First, shake an unopened bottle of soda vigorously for about 15 seconds, then place it in a clear space in the freezer. The goal is to get the soda as cold as possible without freezing it. This will depend on bottle size, freezer temperature and even where in the freezer it’s placed. I used a 2-liter bottle and checked it every 15 minutes after the 2-hour mark. When testing freezing time, be consistent with the bottle size as well as place in freezer so you can time it accurately. About an hour before it’s ready, place a glass cup into the freezer. Remove soda from freezer. In quick motion, unscrew the cap just a bit to let some air out. Tighten the cap again and turn bottle upside down. Turn it back upright and watch the soda magically turn into slush! Pour into the frosted glass. Enjoy!

Ice cubes aren’t just for keeping your drinks cold. Now they serve decorative purposes, too, with these original flower designs! Pour ¾ cup colored liquid (soda, Kool-Aid, freeze pops) into the bottom of a two-liter soda bottle to create these striking flowers.

Answer to Trivia #005:

What’s summer without ice cream? But what’s ice cream that leaves you with sticky messes or aching arms? Here are some tips to make your ice cream experience as smooth as ice cream should be. • Soak ice cream scoops in hot water prior to serving to make ice cream scooping a breeze. • Store ice cream tubs in freezer Ziploc bags to keep ice cream smooth. • Prevent leaky ice cream cones by sticking a mini marshmallow (or more) into the bottom of the cone. • Foil cupcake liners make the perfect disposable drip catchers for ice pops! Simply slide the stick through the liner. • Get a clear cut every time by storing your freeze pops upright between your freezer shelf slats. • Get less cloudy ice cubes by boiling purified water, cooling it and reboiling it prior to freezing.

Summer is synonymous with fresh, cool water. We enjoy drinking it, spraying it, splashing it and swimming or boating in it. Like all adventures, however, it comes with its associated risks. In this week’s article, we’ll talk about water safety.

WATER HIKING Hiking in a stream can be a lot of fun and very dangerous at the same time. When water hiking, make sure you’re wearing appropriate footwear that will stay firmly on your feet. Make sure your group stays together throughout the hike. Beware of plants that may not be your friend. Realize that water can drop suddenly and can increase in pressure and/or speed suddenly. Always check the weather to make sure there is no flash flood warning (even if it’s not raining in the area).

SWIMMING IN A LAKE Jumping into a wild lake after a long hike can be a real thrill. As adventurous as it may seem, though, it is generally not such a good idea and is outlawed in many places. You never know if you’re messing with turtles, snakes, beavers or their friends. It’s their home, and you may not always be a welcome guest. And jumping off a cliff into water can be deadly.

POOL SAFETY Never leave children alone in or near the pool, even for a moment. Make sure pool gates self-close and self-latch at a height children can't reach. Keep rescue equipment and a portable telephone near the pool.

Summer ’18 PSAR (Preventative Search & Rescue) Campaign by COMMSAR

Beware: There are reports of some commercialgrade above-ground pool ladder locks that are very climbable by toddlers! These ladder locks should not be used. CALLING FOR HELP: • Always know the location and address of the pool you’re using in case you need to call Hatzoloh.

• In case of emergency, one person should call for help while others join in the rescue. • When sending someone to call Hatzoloh or 911, ask them to come back and report to you that they called. Many times there is confusion as to who was asked to call, and ultimately, precious time is lost without professional help being called. An adult can struggle in water for about three minutes, but a child can only remain above water for less than thirty seconds. Therefore, action should be taken very quickly to rescue a drowning person. If someone is drowning where there is no lifeguard on duty, and Hatzoloh has been called, you can try rescuing the drowning victim by reaching out to them from the pool deck by hand or with an object such as a tree branch, towel, noodle or pole. You can also throw them a safety ring attached to a long rope (usually found at pools). An untrained individual approaching a drowning victim can be risky (as a drowning person may be thrashing about or may try to climb onto the rescuer to be able to breathe, pushing the rescuer under water) and should be done with great caution.

BOATING SAFETY In 81 percent of boating-related deaths last year, the boats were operated by individuals who did not possess a nationally approved boating safety education certificate. In our area, one must hold a boating safety certificate in order to legally operate a boat. And that’s a good thing. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, in 2017 there were 4,291 accidents that involved 658 deaths and 2,629 injuries as a result of recreational boating. The good news is that as a result of outreach and education, these numbers actually represent a decrease from the year before. Wear life jackets! In 84.5 percent of cases, the victims were not wearing a life jacket. Adults should wear life jackets for their own protection and to set a good example for kids. Overall, the top five primary contributing factors in accidents are operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, machinery failure and alcohol.

In addition to immersing ourselves in water, we must make certain to drink enough water as well. According to the National Park Service, “During the summer months, your fluid/electrolyte loss can exceed two quarts per hour if you hike uphill in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day.” This is a serious matter for all outdoor adventurists. Wearing light-colored and lightweight clothing can help. Wearing clothing that prevents direct sun exposure (yes, long sleeves and a hat) will prevent you from losing fluids. Wearing breathable material will also make a big difference. In dryer climates (out west), your thirst mechanism is easily fooled by the dry air. Do not wait until you start feeling thirsty to begin replacing lost fluid. By the time you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated! It is always a good idea to pre-hydrate. Drink lots of fluids before you start your hike. What to drink? Water is the most logical form of hydration since it is readily available and junkless. However, when losing large amounts of water through perspiration, we need to also replenish electrolytes. Electrolytes are a group of minerals your body needs and include sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. This is where sport drinks or trail mix snacks come in. For example, salty snacks replenish sodium levels, bananas replenish potassium, almonds replenish magnesium, and apricots help replenish calcium. Drinking from lakes and streams is a no-no. The CDC cautions that “while the water flowing in the streams and rivers of the backcoun-

EVERYONE’S FAVORITE VEHICLE The first specialized ice cream truck, with a custom-built soft-serve ice cream machine, was introduced in 1956 by Mister Softee (whose trucks are still on the streets).

The first ice cream truck is credited to Harry Burt of Youngstown, Ohio, who developed a frozen ice cream on a stick in the 1920s, and wanting to promote it, employed a dozen truck drivers to sell it around town. The trucks were fitted with mechanical bells that the drivers would ring to get people’s attention. Burt’s Good Humor trucks lasted for 50 years, until the 1970s when their fleet was sold.

Even the biggest ice cream addict must admit that ice cream is a luxury and not a necessity. Surprisingly, though, the ice cream truck business fared a lot better than most during the Depression; many who had to give up on a lot of life’s pleasures could still afford the nickel a frozen treat off the truck cost. During that time, vendors also began offering the twin popsicles that parents would break in half and divide between two children. There are two basic safety measures ice cream trucks must take to protect their target customer base: the children who are lured to Mommy’s wallet, and then out to the streets. Large red signs and/or flashing lights alert other drivers to the possible presence of children near the street. In addition, the service window is always located on the curb side of the truck, so that children shouldn’t dart out onto the street unprotected.

ICE CREAM WITH A BRACHA The first kosher ice cream truck was introduced by Mr. Ephraim Klein of Klein’s ice cream fame, from where he sold delicious chalav Yisroel treats to the grandparents of today’s youngsters. On Klein’s 60th anniversary, the Klein family set out on a mission to locate the original Klein’s truck, as it was the perfect icon with which to celebrate their legacy. It took a lengthy search for it to be located in a corner in Michigan. It had the markings of the 1950s era, and after careful research, it was proven to indeed be the authentic truck. Klein’s purchased the truck, and it’s been in their possession since.

Gavriel is ruining the factory! He is guilty, and now he is threatening my friends and me… I’m scared!

Gavriel? He’s an old friend, and a very honest and loyal man.

Someone has been threatening us and has placed spying devices in the clubhouse, and we suspect it’s Gavriel. His behavior has been weird and suspicious lately.

Why are you crying? Do you want to tell me what happened?

Don’t worry, Mutty. Don’t go back to the clubhouse until Abba and I check out exactly what’s going on. Go back to playing, and don’t worry about the factory’s problems!

At night

Imma is crying? What’s going on here?

Everything is so complicated! That’s it. Tomorrow I’ll tell my friends that we’re stopping our detective activities. We’ll have to find something else to do.

Recap: Mutty confides in his mother that he suspects Gavriel of spying.

The Different Styles of Monsey Homes Exploring architectural structures in our area BY: YOEL GORALNIK

Featured Home Style:

COLONIAL

The standard “four-over-four” colonial-style home has a door in the center of the first level, with two windows on either side and five windows on the second level. Its name comes from the four rooms on each of its floors.

FINDING THE PERFECT FIT FOR YOU Yoel Goralnik | eRealtyAdvisors Inc.

845-659-1193 150 / THE MONSEY VIEW

A modern home built in the standard colonial style.

OFF-MARKET DEALS OF THE WEEK: First-time opportunity: Townhouse in the heart of Monsey with annual income of $64,000. (Current rent is way below market value; potential income: $72,000.) Asking as low as $889,000. Only for qualified buyers with proof of funds. ||| For the homeowner: House on Wolf Drive; move-in condition for as low as $469,000. ||| Attention builders: Lot in Twin area fully approved to build 3 flats of 2,100 square feet each + basement. Serious buyers only with proof of funds.

As its name implies, the basic design of colonial-style homes dates back to a time before our nation was born, when in the 1700s the colonists brought European influences with them to the Americas. That is also the reason why this style FYI: There are currently 145 colonials for home is most common in the Northsale in Monsey and its surrounding area. east and in the southern states, where the Colonial presence was. Most of the existing colonials were built in the 19th and 20th centuries. High-end contemporary homes and McMansions are inspired by the original colonial style.

ATTRIBUTES: Colonials are usually very symmetrical, with a square or rectangular shape, and generally have two stories in addition to a full basement. In most colonials, the front door, situated in the center on ground level, opens to a formal entryway and faces the dominant design element within the structure: the staircase, which leads to a hallway upstairs that bisects the second floor. Even the modern colonial homes incorporate old-world elements, and they commonly are designed with fireplaces, brick or wood facades, as well as brass furnishings and vintage decorations. The lower level houses the living area, and includes a kitchen, family room, dining room, playroom and/or study, according to the family's needs, and the sleeping quarters are on the second level.

PROS: The spacious nature of a colonial offers a lot of living space on multiple floors, and often a stately appearance, especially at the entrance. Having the sleeping quarters in a separate area allows for a more organized home. Entering to a foyer and not a hallway or room also contributes to an optimally functional home. Due to its space and design, it is the ideal home for hosting events and simchos.

FYI: West of Mississippi, colonial-style homes are extremely uncommon.

UPGRADE POTENTIAL: Due to its symmetrical design, it's very easy to add on to the side or back of colonials.

The colonial-style entranceway

First floor layout of a typical colonial; four bedrooms and two bathrooms usually make up the second floor

FYI: The most expensive colonial in the area (excluding mansions) is priced at $1,400,000, and the cheapest one at $405,000.

CONS: The high square footage of a colonial design results in higher maintenance costs: more heating, air-conditioning and cleaning help. The purchase cost of colonial homes is also usually higher than those of other architectural styles, as are their taxes. Having the bedrooms on the upper level also necessitates a lot of stair climbing.

PREVALENCE: The area with the greatest percentage of colonials is “up-the-hill Monsey. They are also popular in New City, Hillcrest and Wesley Hills. New single-family homes in the entire Monsey area are, for the most part, built in colonial style.

FYI: The first colonial homes, built by the colonists along the Eastern Seaboard, started as two-story homes with one room on each floor.
