(Re: Flying High, Issue 152) I wanted to send the writer of “Flying High,” Blimie, a shout-out! My kids and I look forward to her informative, humorous and witty articles each week. We love how she ties everything in nature to Hashem and His wondrous ways. Kudos! S.S.

RE: HAMOTZI OR MEZONOS? (Inbox, Issue 151) In response to the question raised in regard to which bracha to make on pizza: The answer to the question could have simply said, “Pizza dough made with water is considered Hamotzi.” How much nicer it would have been without judgment, with only the halacha explained. Perhaps Monsey seems to be an idyllic frum community where everyone is fortunate to have had a solid Bais Yaakov education, but this is far from the reality. Monsey is blessed with a very diverse population made up of up-the-hill and down-the-hill residents, in-towners and out-of-towners, baalei teshuvah, and yes, we even are privileged to have geirim in our midst, each with different educational backgrounds. Some individuals may have been their class’s valedictorian, while others may have struggled in school and missed out on foundational halachos. “A Reader” should be commended for reaching out to learn that which she didn’t know. She recognized there were both Hamotzi and Mezonos pizzas, even if she was unaware of the nuances of the halacha. Unfortunately, “A Reader” is a victim of the pervasive custom of retail pizza being Mezonos, thus creating the illusion that Mezonos is the correct bracha for pizza. S.W. may not have known the halacha, but possessed enough yiras Shamayim enough to write in to say that they were bothered after making the wrong bracha. Many would just say,

“Oh well, next time...” People should be encouraged to keep asking questions and keep learning. They should not be shamed by their lack of knowledge. (I also want to note that the halacha stated wasn’t entirely accurate. Yes, water is one of the liquids that make a dough Hamotzi, but not in all cases. When was the last time you washed on rugelach?) R.S.M.

LEAH STERN RESPONDS: My deepest apologies to those whom I offended with the insensitivity of my answer regarding the brachos question on pizza. You are right; we should not take for granted that all of our readership has background knowledge in halacha. I appreciate the letter writer who brought this to my attention, giving me the opportunity to ask mechilah. I’d like to point out that many poskim are against mezonos bread, especially if eaten as a meal, and the halachos of pizza especially are extremely complicated. Hilchos Brachos is comprehensive, and it is impossible to write one response to cover all opinions. One must be aware of this problem and consult daas Torah. I once heard (but could not verify the source) that one of the world-trusted baal machsheirim was asked why the bracha of food isn’t written on wrappers. The reply was that not every candy wrapper is long enough to accommodate a full blatt of Gemara. May we all be zoche to make proper brachos. Leah Stern

Reading the two letters regarding their writers’ lack of knowledge as to the proper bracha for (water-based) pizza, I reckon it is time to reevaluate our ideals. Why is it that after twenty years of formal schooling, and an (assumingly) solid frum upbringing, our daughters remain clueless as to the basics of halacha? This got me thinking about the broader picture. Where have our priorities strayed? Is chinuch really only about achieving top grades? If our daughters are getting an impeccable education and still reach marriage without the knowledge to conduct mundane domestic tasks with clarity and grace, then our system is failing us. It is time we rethink our priorities. To quote a famous speaker: “We do not have children just so we can stand at the side and kvell, ‘Oh! What a nachas!’” We need to shape our daughters so that when they are ripe and ready to build a home of their own, they don’t need to turn to a publication for guidance. V’al titosh Toras imecha. The Torah and its principles should be given over from mother to child. Sending our children out to school every morning should only be a supplement to their chinuch. Our tafkid runs so much deeper and wider. If we would be more involved in their day-to-day life and let them be more involved in

ours, then we’d accomplish so much more. It is our chiyuv to let our daughters experience life through domestic hands-on chores, switch back our roles to traditional ways of old, and with our binah yeseirah, teach them what life really is about. Then, when their daughter will ask, “Mommy, what bracha on the pizza?” they will know the answer with certainty and pride! L.G.

QUESTION THE QUINOA (Re: Quinoa Cuisine, Issue 151) Thank you for all the delicious and doable recipes featured in your magazine. We look forward to the menu column every week. Just a note about quinoa: It

58 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 20, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

can be infested, so you should find out how to check for bugs before use. Enjoy! A Local Cook

AN HONORABLE MENTION (RE: Boggle) Just wanted to mention how much our family is enjoying the game each week. Although we never send in our list of words, I figured I could share that my daughter found a 13-letter word this week: procrastinate. This deserves an honorable mention! Thanks again, Nadav Family

Dear Basya, Why are fruits so limited on your plan? Aren’t they healthy? Also, sometimes when I feel like I ate too much on Shabbos, I just have a few fruits for breakfast on Sunday, and then I don’t eat anything until lunch. Is this okay to do? Signed, Fan of Fruits

As you see, a serving of fruit is similar in calories and fat to bread, but is actually higher in carbohydrates and lower in protein! It is also higher in sugars, and although it’s what we call “natural sugar,” it can still cause sugar cravings. So although fruit is good for you, it shouldn’t be eaten without limit. And choosing a fruit over a slice of bread and a protein as a breakfast doesn’t do much to benefit you at all. Best of luck, Basya Please send in your nutrition question to info@nutritionbytanya.com, Attn: Basya. Parshas

Chukas

By: Malka Schneps

PARSHAS CHUKAS BEGINS, “Vay’dabeir Hashem el Moshe v’el Aharon leimor, Zos chukas haTorah asher tzivah Hashem… — Hashem spoke to Moshe and to Aharon saying, ‘This is the statute of the Torah which Hashem commanded…’” (Bamidbar 19:1–2). The parsha then goes on to describe the laws of the Parah Adumah. These laws include the ways a person can become tamei as well as tahor, yet the Torah refers to these as chukas haTorah rather than chukas hataharah or chukas hatumah. The Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh explains that by performing a chok, which is a mitzvah we do not understand, Hashem regards it as if we have kept the entire Torah. When we do a mitzvah that does not make sense to us, it shows that our true motivation in performing mitzvos is that Hashem commanded us to, and not that they make sense to us. If we only did mitzvos that made sense to us, then we would be obeying our intellect, and not Hashem. The mitzvah of the Parah Adumah is called a chok, but it is not the only chok in the Torah. So why is the chok of Parah Adumah the chok that is called “chukas haTorah”? The Kli Yakar explains that the reason for the mitzvah of the Parah Adumah is more hidden from us than other chukim. Because it is the most incomprehensible, fulfilling this particular chok provides the biggest proof that out intentions in performing this mitzvah are l’Shem Shamayim. For example, Shlomo Hamelech understood the reason for every mitzvah except the mitzvah of Parah Adumah (Bamidbar Rabbah 19:3). In fact, the only person to have understood the mitzvah of Parah Adumah was Moshe Rabbeinu, and Moshe did not come to understand it on his own — Hashem revealed the meaning to Moshe (Bamidbar Rabbah 19:6). From this medrash, we see that no person came to understand the chok of Parah Adumah on his own. But once Hashem revealed the meaning to Moshe Rabbeinu, he understood it. The Sfas Emes concludes from this medrash that the chok of Parah Adumah has meaning that can be understood by humans, but not until Hashem reveals it. The Sfas

70 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Emes cites Koheles 7:23 that Shlomo Hamelech said about the Parah Adumah, “Amarti echkamah v’hi r’chokah mimeni… — I said I will become wise, but it was far from me.” Why was the chok of Parah Adumah beyond the grasp of even one so wise as Shlomo Hamelech? The answer lies in that very description: wise. Wisdom, logic and understanding are all tools in the realm of the physical world. The Sfas Emes explains that the reasons behind the mitzvah of Parah Adumah are above the laws of nature and therefore cannot be accessed through ordinary means. The Sfas Emes concludes that we should accept the mitzvos because Hashem decreed them, regardless of our own understanding. If we do this, then Hashem actually grants us some understanding, which is why Hashem revealed understanding to Moshe. This takes us one step further. When we do chukim, we demonstrate that our intentions in keeping mitzvos are pure. But Hashem gives us a gift in return. Hashem bestows understanding upon us. When we do the chukim even though we do not understand them, this in itself is the zechus we need to acquire understanding. We are not on the level of Shlomo Hamelech, who understood all of the mitzvos except for the Parah Adumah. For most of us, there are many mitzvos that we do not properly understand — not only chukim. While we should strive to understand them all, the reality is that we do not. However, we should try to do those mitzvos with the same zerizus as the ones we do understand. If a person were to wait until he understands a mitzvah before performing it properly, he may never come to understand it at all. When you find yourself faced with a mitzvah that you do not comprehend, tell yourself that you are going to perform this mitzvah with all your heart because Hashem commanded you to do so, and then pour yourself into doing it. In that zechus, Hashem may just grant you the understanding you desire.

Official Cease and Desist Zone Created in Chestnut Ridge RESPONDING to complaints about allegedly overeager real estate agents, the State of New York’s Division of Licensing Services has added Chestnut Ridge to the list of areas where professionals are banned from asking residents if they want to sell their homes. VIN News reported that the law will be in effect for a five-year period

as of July 1, joining several communities in Queens and one in the Bronx that are currently on the state’s official protected list. Under state law, homeowners can register their residences on a list that is maintained by the state and is available to the public. Once a home has been placed on the official regis-

try, real estate professionals would be forbidden from soliciting the homeowner in an attempt to purchase their home. The law applies equally to singleand multiple-family residences. Violators could be punished by fines of up to $1,000 and could have their real estate licenses revoked.

Multiple Crews Participate in Emergency Plane Crash Rescue Drill A SIMULATED plane crash in Piermont last weekend gave emergency responders an opportunity to train for a full-fledged rescue operation. Approximately twelve fire departments sent personnel to the scene where rescuers responded to a fake scenario of a malfunctioning aircraft that skidded across the Piermont pier and crash-landed in the Hudson River, reported The Journal News. A Piermont police van covered with pallets

and bales of hay was set ablaze as a pretend airplane cockpit, with firefighters dousing the plane as marine crews from several river towns, as well as the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, donned their wetsuits and slid into the Hudson looking for crash “victims” to be rescued. Multiple volunteers stood in as fake victims wearing signs informing rescuers of their injuries so that they could be triaged and receive ap-

propriate medical treatment. Staging the drill, the third such exercise held in Piermont, is an excellent opportunity to help departments prepare for real emergencies, said Piermont Assistant Fire Chief Dan Goswick. “We can see what each department has to offer and work together when resources are needed,” said Goswick.

Emergency Connectors May Make Cuomo Bridge Shutdowns a Thing of the Past A RECENT total standstill on the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge created a colossal nightmare for commuters as all southbound lanes were closed after a tractor trailer tipped over in the early morning hours, but delays of that nature should be ancient history once the second span of the bridge opens later this year. The Journal News reported that three crossover points will be constructed between the eastbound and westbound spans of the twin bridges, giving New York State Thruway officials the ability to move traffic from one

76 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 20, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

bridge to the next in case of a serious emergency. Water lines being installed on the undersides of the bridges’ decking could also be put to use as needed by fire crews. In the case of lesser emergencies, breakdown lanes on each of the twin bridges will be put into play as needed, giving rescue vehicles access to disabled vehicles while still allowing for the free flow of traffic.

SOME YEARS AGO, a certain school was dealing with serious challenges. In a relatively short amount of time, several staff members became seriously ill, and one of them passed away. The staff members felt anxious and confused and decided to turn to a gadol hador for guidance on how to stop the gezeirah. An individual was sent to contact Rav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a, on behalf of the staff, but Rav Kanievsky responded that they should consult a greater gadol, advising them to speak with Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman, zt”l. When the shaliach went to Rav Shteinman, the Rosh Yeshivah said that the staff should be careful with sinas chinam. We all know that, as the Gemara states in Gittin, sinas chinam is one of the reasons that we are still in galus. It is also widely recognized that many great blessings and yeshuos can result from true ahavas chinam. Nonetheless, because it is so difficult to excel in this area, we often choose simpler segulos, which have clear directions and are easier to follow. However, if we have a better understanding of real ahavah and clarity about the practical work needed to achieve it, we could dedicate ourselves to growing in this area and thereby bring yeshuos upon ourselves. First, we must recognize the beauty and greatness of ahavas chinam and the importance of letting go of our resentment. Second, we must understand that ahavas chinam allows us to be fully connected to Hashem Yisborach. The seforim write that we can’t be fully connected to Hashem if we are not connected to Klal Yisroel through ahavas chinam. Every Yid has a tzelem Elokim in himself, a piece of Hashem, and if we are not connected to every Yid,

June 20, 2018 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 81 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

we cannot be fully connected to Hashem. The Mishnah (5:19) teaches us: “Any love which is dependent on something, when the ‘something’ ceases, the love ceases. Any love which is not dependent on anything will never cease.” During the wedding ceremony, when we stand under the chuppah, we sing, “Mi ban siach…” — He Who understands the babble of the rose among thorns, the love of a bride, the joy of her beloved ones, may He bless the groom and bride… The seforim mention the special power of “ahavas kallah” on her yom hachuppah. What, indeed, is the kallah’s unique power? What is the “ahavas chinam” that is mentioned again and again? On the day of her chasunah, a kallah’s ahavah is pure. At that point, it doesn’t yet depend on anything, since she is at the very beginning of her relationship with her future husband, and it is her ahavas chinam that is so powerful. Many kallahs indeed use this opportunity to bentch others. In fact, a story is told of a bride who, dressed in her wedding gown, once arrived at the emergency room of a hospital in Eretz Yisroel. As she came out of the taxi, the nurses rushed to see what the emergency was on her special day and how they could help her proceed as quickly as possible to her wedding. “Everything is okay,” the kallah explained. “You see, I know that today, the day of my wedding, I have a special power to bless others. I came to the emergency room to find people who can benefit from my blessing for a refuah sheleimah.” The nurses were deeply moved by the kallah’s gesture and the thoughtfulness and compassion that she exhibited on her special day. The Torah commands us, “V’ahavta l’reiacha kamocha” — we must love others just like we love ourselves, and just the way we understand and always seek to justify our actions, so too should we do with the actions of others. Even when there are some “scratches” on our glasses — some minor things that bother us — we can still strive to look through them and see the beauty of every Yid.

Every Yid has a tzelem Elokim in himself, a piece of Hashem, and if we are not connected to every Yid, we cannot be fully connected to Hashem.

Rabbi Dovid Steiman specializes in the chinuch of today’s bachurim, enabling them to become their very best selves.

Beyond the Sandwich

By: Gitty Luria For most of us, sandwiches are the obvious on-the-go meal. They’re easy, filling and require no rewarming. Mostly, though, we fall back on sandwiches simply due to the lack of better ideas, but eating nourishing meals on the go is possible, and simpler than you might think! Here are some portable, fully-balanced meals that will take you beyond the sandwich.

TIPS AND NOTES: If you’re packing a salad to go, 2-ounce cups with lids make perfect individual dressing containers and easily fit into any lunch container, and mini Ziploc bags are great for toppings. Each of the three recipes yields approximately four servings.

How To Lose Fat For Good

Without "Dieting" “You don't give meal plans. You don't give any food restriction. The only thing I get is that you do exercise. 'At the same time you say that exercise itself doesn't help you lose weight. “How will you help me lose weight? How will you help me keep it off for good?” asked Moshe confused. “These are very important questions and I will be happy to show you how this works” I replied.

“Can I ask you something?” I asked, receiving a nod.

“Absolutely!” Moshe said and for the first time there was a gleam of hope in his eyes

“How do all other diets that you go on work?”

“Let me ask you something. Do by any chance like chocolate?” I asked

“Well, I normally get a meal plan.” Replied Moshe. “I weight myself each week to make sure I'm moving in the direction and make the right adjustment to continue in that direction.” He continued

“Is it safe to say that you know what is a healthy I began by saying, “The type of life that a person food and what isn’t?” I asked. lives is a by-product of what that person has “Of course. (With the exception of medical conditioning) “So if you have the knowledge, what seems to be holding you back from losing weight?” I “(That doesn't mean to say that someone that is asked. skinny is living a healthy lifestyle either. You can still be skinny and unhealthy.) “Honestly, I was hoping you would be able to answer that. “In order to lose weight and keep the results the It is so frustrating to know all the information but person needs to change the lifestyle when it comes to it I can’t seem to lose weight.” permanently. Moshe cried annoyed. “Remember, results only last as long as we stick to the healthy habits. “From my point of view the issue is with control.” I pointed out “By going on a temporary lifestyle program, which is what most diets promote, they will “I 100% agree with that. just get temporary results. I have no control when it comes to food.” Moshe replied nodding his head. “Does this make sense?” I asked “Right now you can’t see yourself having any “Yes, it make sense. . . control when it comes to food.” I continued. “In theory. . . “Imagine I'm a wizard and I was able to “I still don't know how you differ than all the magically give you control. other diets that I have done?” Moshe Do you think that would help you?” I asked questioned, still puzzled

“Who doesn't?. But it has to be dairy!” “Imagine you came home and your wife asked you to taste the chicken soup for shabbos. Right after you tasted the soup you see a piece of red Torino chocolate, your favorite. What do you do?” I asked “Well being as I’m fleshig, I wont eat it.” “Interesting...” I replied. “Well this is different. This it going against the Torah and my beliefs.” “Yes. Although, essentially what you are saying is that you do have control. “When it comes to taking care of your health you don't value as much as you do other areas of your life. (for example: religion) “Now imagine if we can bring up your health as a high priority. With this new mindset do you think it would be easier to be more consistent?” I asked. “If it is possible. That would help me stick to the plan, yes.” Moshe said “Great! This is exactly how you will lose weight and keep it off!

Meet Hershal and David. For the past 15 years, they have been sacrificing their Friday afternoons for you. They know how to fix torn and twisted wires and are professionals at identifying any problems cropping up. They are fluent in Hilchos Eiruvin and ensure that the Eruv is erect in the most 100% Halachically permissible way. Hershal and David are part of the Rockland Eruv’s hardworking and good-willing team, a trademark symbol that makes our beautiful and flourishing community thrive…

It’s a blistering Friday afternoon as I press down my gas pedal. Air condition on full blast, I look forward to finishing my endless list of errands and finally getting home. As I hit a curve in the road, something catches my eye. I slow down the car, craning my neck up to survey the Bucket Truck parked on the side of the road. Clad in a white, construction Hard Hat and Tzitzis waving in the air, a Yiddishe guy seems to putter and tinker at the pole. Not the typical sight to one for such menial tasks, I am surprised to see him work with so much passion and expertise. Beads of sweat glitter on his forehead as he continues poking, evidently engrossed in his work. I notice the “Rockland Eruv” logo emblazoned on his truck. The guy looks down at me and I flash him a smile of gratitude. A sense of great pride and appreciation encompasses me, knowing I can carry worry-free every Shabbos. Many people perceive the Eruv as a simple charity; it is a utility. They view it as a given benefit, and do not realize the web of dedicated people who are behind the effort. The Rockland Eruv is something being done by us, for us, and is truly a brilliant display of Mi Ka’amcha Yisroel. Jewish Bodkim and Volunteers are not regular task workers like public utility maintenance employees, tending to our utilities as part of their work obligations. Our fellow brethren do it out of their sense of responsibility and genuine care for our widespread community. Just like many of our previous Tzaddikim, they oftentimes trek outside in grueling weathers and conditions, merely in the name of sanctifying the Shabbos. The Rockland Eruv Committee comprises of countless Rabbanim, lay leaders and volunteers from across the entire greater Rockland area. They work well- organized and with maximum efficiency to ensure the utmost functionality of our Eruv. Solely committed to bringing this advantage to the Jews of Rockland County, the members of the Rockland Eruv dedicate hours upon hours of precious time and manpower.

They work hard and diligently, monitoring all of the Rockland Eruv’s mileage on a weekly basis, to ensure it is standing in the most Halachicallypermissible way. Every week, you rely on these anonymous welldoers to bring upon your Oneg Shabbos. With the simple pushing of a wheelchair, stroller or by merely bringing you Tallis bag to Shul, you depend on the Rockland Eruv to carry freely on Shabbos. Just like our fellow Yid in his Bucket Truck, so too we have to stretch out our hand and solicit an immense appreciation for this great and important group of people. Each of us benefits tremendously from the Rockland Eruv. It provides a security and wonderful asset which not every Jewish community is fortunate-enough to have. Originally started with the simple generosity and funds of volunteers, the costs have advanced well beyond the anticipated. Given the outstanding acclaim of Rockland as a community, the greater neighborhood continued to expand and exceed well over its original planning and initiation. The growth has not served to deter the Rockland Eruv committee from consistently planning and coordinating the continuous progression of the Eruv. On schedule Iy”H, are various appreciation events for the Bodkim, Shul Reps, and Volunteers, as well as an informative newsletter and a highly educative bimonthly booklet. The committee additionally works hand-in-hand with its workers to create accurate mapping, indicating the span of which the Rockland Eruv presently covers. With far-reaching connections all over the world, the Rockland Eruv’s board is professional and highly equipped, even able to assist other communities such as Holliswood, Queens and Bayswater, New York in the disastrous aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. As the Rockland Eruv grows into its 15th year, the Eruv board has come to rely on private funds to continue upholding its organized and efficient system. As it is custom, the luxury of benefitting should not come from anywhere but its own populace. Knowing of the Rockland Eruv trailblazer’s and volunteer’s extensive efforts, we must display our immense gratification and financial support, so they can continue blazing the path for Klal Yisroel. Together, we the greater Rockland community, will provide a priceless achievement for the sanctification of Shabbos. And together we will keep it whole in our mind, and in our life. Good Shabbos Eruv to all.

Road Trips. Planning them is always exciting. Poring over the endless options in the Excursions section, we can almost feel the wind in our faces and the squeals of laughter ring longingly in our ears. But anyone who’s been there knows that the reality is nothing like the idyllic pictures of our minds. There’s thumping of those restless feet on our backs, bickering over what music to play and the ever-persistent chants of “Are we there yet?” Whether you’re planning a road trip or are heading overseas for the summer, these DIY activities will keep your family entertained for hours and are compact enough so they won’t intrude on your already skimpy leg room.

DIY Activity Book

Supplies: Loose-leaf binder: I used a small one, about 6”x8” Hard felt: Not the sticker ones. Using soft felt for the game boards won’t work because the Velcro will tear the felt. Velcro: I used Velcro tie straps. Since the pieces are doublesided, I got the most use out of them.

Make your own activity books using felt and Velcro! Velcro will stick to the felt so the pieces don’t slide during bumpy rides, and they are easily removable for endless play. Turning the felt “game boards” into pockets will make for a neater book, the pockets providing the space to store each game’s pieces. (Note: See Othello. There an open piece of felt may work better.)

Directions: 1. To create felt pockets, measure the distance from the binder rings to the edge of the looseleaf, double it, and cut the felt to that size. 2. Fold felt in half, and using hot glue, glue sides together to create a neat “pocket.” 3. Glue two pieces of Velcro onto the inner sides of the pocket to keep game pieces from falling out. 4. Puncture three holes on the folded side by carefully twisting a knife or scissors through the felt, and slide onto binder rings. Your pockets are now all ready!

“Mommy, Are We There Yet?” Since the concept of time is difficult for children, seeing the progress visually is a great way to help your child get a sense of when they’ll finally arrive. I made this part of the activity book with felt, but you can make your own version by either using an old clock or a road strip displayed prominently in the car. As your trip progresses, move your “car” along the route. Add pictures based on the route you’re taking (airport, airplane, boat, bridge, highway, exit, etc.). For the felt board version, decorate your route as desired and glue a piece of Velcro to the back of your car. You can also use a photo of your child instead of a car. Children love seeing exactly where “they” are along the route.

Connect Four Directions: 1. Using a ruler and pen or marker, design a 7”x6” grid on one felt pocket. 2. Using a button as a guide, trace and cut felt into circles. 3. Optional: Glue a piece of Velcro onto each game piece. It makes them slideproof, but felt-on-felt doesn’t slide easily, so it’s not a must. Alternate option: Lots of spare buttons in two colors? Glue Velcro onto buttons, and use as game pieces.

Othello I prefer leaving this board open as opposed to making a pocket, so that the board should be larger. (Since all pieces for this game are Velcro, there’s no concern over the pieces sliding out.)

Directions: 1. Using a ruler, draw an 8”x8” grid on one felt board. 2. For pieces, glue together black and white Velcro pieces, leaving the rough side of the Velcro exposed on both sides (the fuzzy sides should be glued together).

102 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Tic-tac-toe Directions: 1. Using a ruler, draw a 3”x3” grid on one felt pocket. 2. For pieces, cut out felt in two different shapes or colors, or use pre-cut felt shapes. Alternate option: Use buttons in two different colors, and glue Velcro onto them.

Puzzle Directions: 1. Use a family photo, magazine clipping or any picture you like. 2. Trace pop sticks onto the back of the picture, then cut to size. Use larger pop sticks for younger children and smaller pop sticks to create a more challenging puzzle. 3. Glue picture strips onto pop sticks, and glue a piece of Velcro onto the back of each pop stick.

Kids will love Mr. Potato Head’s companionship on the go!

Directions: Cut out various features for Mr. Potato Head (see above for ideas), or print pictures to trace. Optional: Glue Velcro onto the pieces for added security.

104 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Matching Directions: 1. Cut felt into squares, and draw shapes onto them — two of each shape. 2. Glue Velcro pieces onto board, rough side up, one for each game piece.

Bonus! Loose-leaf binder covers make the perfect white boards! Attach a string to a whiteboard marker, and tie to a loose-leaf binder ring to avoid misplacing it.

Hi, Mrs. S.! How many years have you been driving in Monsey?

I’ve been taxi driving for about 35 years. I’ve had people tell me that I’m part of Monsey’s landscape, or an icon here, and I still find that so strange because I’m originally an out-of-town girl! In the beginning, my kids would send me messages with a beeper each time a customer called, and then I’d have to call back by payphone! At that point, I was only driving locally, mainly between Monsey and New Square. That’s a long time! How did you get started?

About fifteen years after my husband and I were married, he got a temporary position in South Fallsburg for the Elul zman. This was his first — and last — job, by the way. He learns all day. So at that point, my husband’s father gave him a car so he could go and come from work every day. After that zman, when the job was over, my husband said, “Let’s give back the car,” and I told him, “Uh-uh. We’ll keep the car, and I’ll make parnassah from it.” After that, the wife of a prominent dayan here in Monsey heard I had a car, and she became my first customer. And that’s how my little taxi service took off. Wow! How have things changed in Monsey over time?

Today, you know what the most difficult thing in Monsey is? And no, I’m not going to say it’s the buses or narrow streets or anything. You know what the hardest thing is? Making a left-hand turn. Traffic is crazy. I once told a customer that, and she said, “Kein ayin hara.” And you know what, she’s right! It’s also hard when young men cut me off from behind. The Monsey View did a great job making Monsey greater and cleaner, but you should also work on making Monsey safer, both for drivers and pedestrians. What do people need to know when calling for transportation?

That not everyone’s “right away” means the same thing. I have a cute story about this that goes back more than 20 years. I had a customer who had seven daughters. Whenever one of them asked their father for a ride, he said, “Don’t bother me, call Mrs. S.” And he used to tell his daughters that everyone else’s “right away” is my “twenty minutes.”

THE MONSEY VIEW / 111

So now we know what makes a great taxi driver! What makes a great customer?

The same thing! A good customer is punctual. And I can tell you which children were brought up with manners. Some kids say thank you, and one child even told me, “It’s because of you that I can go out at night. Thank you!” Then there are kids who don’t say hello, thank you, nothing. When a kid is polite, I’ll call up a parent and say, “This kid was brought up well!” Tell me about your customers. Are there any customers you’ve gotten to know well?

I have a great customer base, and I love my customers. There’s one woman, also a Mrs. S., who is the most adorable and special person. She actually made the challahs for my son’s bar mitzvah many years ago. And I’m also really close to the family of that dayan I mentioned earlier. When I lost my daughter, a”h, my customers were so mechazek me! I hadn’t even known people were aware! I have no family here, so the warmth and chizuk I get from people is great. Sometimes customers want to give me a tip, and I say, “You already gave me one!” And they say, “Yeah?” and I say, “Yeah, you called me and gave me business!”

112 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 20, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

May I ask you what your pet peeve is?

People who make me late. I’m a one-man band, you have to understand, so when I accept a call, it’s up to me to get there on time. A few months ago, I had a lady who asked me to take her to Shopper’s Haven. A few minutes later I got and accepted another call and told her when to expect me. But then, the first customer told me to wait for her at Shopper’s Haven for one minute, and that minute turned into five, and then ten. And in the meantime, my second customer was waiting! After this lady did this to me a few times, I began ignoring her calls. Then, I once picked up by mistake, and she asked, “Mrs. S., are you ignoring my calls?” And I told her, “Yes, I am!” And when she asked why, I told her that she was chronically making me wait! My parnassah is based on my reputation, so being on time is very important to me! What do you do during seasons that are busy at work and at home, like before yom tov?

Before Pesach, I stop working Rosh Chodesh Nissan. There’s only so much I can do. And I never work Erev Shabbos. What do you do in bad weather?

When there’s a snowstorm, I will go out for extreme reasons only. On the whole, I tell people to put on boots and walk! And I tell them to walk on sidewalks; the curb is there to stop cars from getting too close to pedestrians. Do you have any safety tips to share?

The things I see, Hashem yirachem! Please walk on sidewalks. Please wear reflectors — especially during dusk, when the lights of the car don’t hit the white shirt. And people should know what Rosh Chodesh means. Rosh Chodesh means there’s no moon; it’s dark outside. What’s the shortest trip you remember?

My shortest trip actually struck me as very funny, which is why I remember it even years later. There was once a family living

No, I was happy she gave me business! What’s the longest trip you remember?

Years and years ago, I once drove a woman all the way to Charlottesville, Virginia, for medical treatment, and then I drove back to pick her up a few days later. Virginia had very few airports, so this made most sense. I drove through Washington, D.C., so she could see the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Monument, and so on to add a little interest to the long and difficult trip. What was your most memorable trip?

Driving through New York City during 9/11. I had driven a woman to Brooklyn the night before, and they put me up for the night. The next morning, as I set out to leave for Monsey, the weatherman mentioned seeing smoke from the area of the Twin Towers and said they’ll report back with an update. Then, while I was trying to get out of Brooklyn and onto the Verrazano, I suddenly saw a huge fireball engulfing one of the towers. This happened from one second to the next and was a horrible thing to watch. Soon there were black papers flying all over, and the whole scene was as if out of a nightmare. What can I say? It shook me up. And then then towers fell, and there was no reception anymore. I stayed stuck in Staten Island where a wonderful family took me into their home. When did you learn that this was an act of terror?

In Staten Island I heard snippets of conversation about terrorists, but I wasn’t yet sure what was going on. Then, when we got the all-clear, I hit the road again. Driving back home on the New Jersey Turnpike, I was one of the only cars on the road. It was like a ghost town out there. I was a little afraid, so when I saw a number of Yidden on the side of the road at one point, I also pulled over, and that’s when I learned

Sure. I once drove a chassan and kallah home after the mitzvah tantz. That was very special. And I used to drive the Skvere Rebbetzin often. Many years ago, the long flight of steps from Ashel Lane to Phyllis Terrace was a dirt shortcut that people unofficially used by car. Once, before taking the Rebbetzin through the shortcut, I told her, “Rebbetzin, I hope you don’t mind cutting through here, but this is the closest thing Monsey has to a roller coaster.” She was a great sport about it and enjoyed the ride! I also drove the Belzer Rebbe’s mother, Rebbetzin Basya Bender, and many others. Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us here at The Monsey View, and may your car take you to many more wonderful places.

If you have room for shoes in the pockets, that’s great. Again, use a Ziploc bag to prevent mess. Use one of those pockets to also pack a garbage bag for dirty laundry.

Packing adults is much easier. you aren’t a frequent traveler. Having been the world over, packing is second nature to me by now. But even with experience, there will always be a measure of anxiety. Do we have enough clothing? Are we forgetting anything vital? And of course: Do we really need all this?! Having a system will make the packing much easier. I always like to start with the children’s clothing. It takes the longest time and needs the most thought. I begin with the youngest child and organize the clothing by daily wear. That means complete outfits will be stacked, one on top another inside the suitcase. For instance: pants, shirt, vest = one outfit. Or shirt, skirt = Don’t forget to make a quick one outfit. READY YOUR ROVER Before embarking on a long trip, make sure your vehicle is ready for the way. Take your car to the mechanic for a checkup, or if you’re handy: • Check levels of all fluids, including coolant, oil, and brake and windshield-washer fluids. • Check belts and hoses for damage. Replace if needed.

had spray deodorant explode over all of my clothing… Not pleasant at all. You will need four large bags: One large bag should hold the toiletries that may spill, like toothpaste, gel, deodorant, etc. Put things that need to remain hygienic, such as your tube of toothpaste, into separate small bags, and put those bags into the large one. (Depending on how many self-care products you use and their size, you may need to use more than one bag.) Use another bag for medications that aren’t prone to spilling, like Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl tablets and an EpiPen. Use a third large bag for smaller ones containing liquids, such as all the children’s versions of the above listed medications. Last, use your fourth bag for items such as combs, brushes and ponytail holders.

• Make sure your radiator is free of debris by looking into the grill. • Clean air filter if needed. (This can actually make the car run better.) • Check fluid level of battery and make sure all cables are attached with no corrosion.

Chaverim’s phone number

• Check tire pressure for appropriate inflation. Check the spare as well; you never know when you might need it. • Make sure the tread on your tires isn’t worn out. If yes, replace! Bald tires are extremely dangerous. • To prevent streaks on windows while driving, make sure that your windshield wipers are new and work well. • Take the car for a drive and check for any odd noises or pulling sensations. If there are, head to the mechanic before you leave. • Check to make sure that all seatbelts work and that car seats are properly installed. • Make sure that the registration and owner’s manual are in the glove compartment. • Program Chaverim’s number into your cell phone and pray you won’t need it...

And then there’s all those bulk items, like packages of diapers, sheitel and shtreimel boxes, tallis and tefillin, and other odds and ends. Get yourself cardboard boxes for all those extras. It reduces the amount of shlepping back and forth and keeps things from flying around. Pillows and blankets get passed around to those who need them right before you leave. As you finish packing, place all ready-to-go items in a central location. I prefer the dining room table. Only load the car when everything is done and accounted for. As for important documents, don’t even think about saving that for last minute. As soon as you plan

your trip, find out what paperwork you will need and prepare a list. The list can include passports, photo IDs and perhaps medical records. If you are a parent crossing the border with children and your spouse isn’t joining you on the trip, it is wise to have a notarized letter signed by the other parent giving permission for you take the children abroad. Without that letter, you might be not be allowed to leave the country. Put all of these things into a manila envelope. On the day you are leaving, place the envelope on the table with your car keys or cell phone on top to ensure you won’t forget it. Last, prepare a small, open-top box or milk crate with items you’ll need immediate access to, such as drinks, cups, snack items, a few diapers and baby wipes. Now you’re all set to go! Don’t forget Tefillas Haderech!

ber of images) are the perfect way to display a variety of photos you’ve taken yourself. Hallway walls are a great place for these. I have an aunt who hung a huge, 4-foot collage frame in her upstairs hallway and filled it with images of her children from babyhood onward. As a kid, I remember stopping to look at it every single time I was at her house, because there were so many adorable images in it! Now that her kids are all grown it’s even more special to look at. I also adore hanging pictures in kitchens. We spend so much of our time in the kitchen, and seeing images that bring a smile to the face is the perfect way to add a little joy to the day. My kitchen has very little wall space, but on the one wall I do have, I hung a portrait of my kids that I took one summer in the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. The image is about six years old, but I don’t ever want to take it down. Sometimes when I’m sitting and sipping my coffee, I stare at it and marvel at how much they’ve grown up and changed since that summer day (and try not to let my tears drip into my mug). Whichever way you choose to print your precious family photos, the main thing is to get them off the screen and into your home so that they can be looked at and enjoyed. The pleasure you’ll receive from seeing daily reminders of how blessed you are will add so much joy to your life, and your family will appreciate it forever.

Sprawled over 22,275 acres on the Shawangunk Ridge in Ulster County, history and nature come together in the most breathtaking way at one of New York’s largest preserves, Minnewaska State Park. There’s so much beauty to behold within the miles of this nature wonderland that you can keep coming back and still won’t cover it all. Its peaks rise some 2,000 feet above sea level, and its valleys are cut by clear streams. Stunning falls thunder down its cliffs, and three sky lakes hide in its folds, their waters crystal clear since they’re fed by rain alone (hence their name). Miles of carriage roads and footpaths provide hiking and walking areas (a trail map is available in the park office), and the jaw-dropping views from its forests and open ledges capture niflaos ha’Borei in its purest form. There are many trails to hike, of different difficulty levels and durations. Here are three notable features of Minnewaska State Park and its surrounding area:

Miracles of Today A POWER OF TEHILLIM LIVES ON

MEMBERSHIP KEEPS CHILD HEALTHY Miriam was going over the next week’s schedule with her husband, Shloimy. “Oh, Shani has a well visit appointment next week,” Miriam said. “That will make it for a busier week,” said Shloimy, “but at least it’s for a good reason!” “I know,” said Miriam, “Last winter, I was literally at the doctor with Shani every week. First it was a cold, then a bad cough, then the flu, then the infection. It was a nightmare!” “You know,” she continued, “I just realized that I haven’t taken Shani to the doctor even once this winter!! Isn’t that unbelievable?” Shloimy chuckled. “Well, it makes sense. We got her extra protection this year!” Miriam was confused, “You mean the flu shot? We always do that!” “No,” laughed Shloimy, “I mean that we signed up for Tehillim Kollel! Our whole family had extra Shmirah this year!” “You think it made a difference?” said Miriam. “I forgot that you signed us up. What do they do again?” “Of course it made a difference!” said Shloimy. “This is Tehillim Kollel we are talking about! We had the zchus of having an entire minyan of Talmidei Chachamim davening for us. Every day. Saying the entire Sefer Tehillim! Tehillim Kollel is like five zchusim rolled into one- and we are lucky enough to have their special, holy power on our side this year, praying for the wellbeing of our family! And Shani’s health this year is probably just one example of what the power of Tehillim has done for us and will do for us. Who knows what other wonderful blessings are in store? I can’t wait to find out.”

With all the talk about “going green” due to car pollution, you’d be surprised to know that in the early 20th century, horses were producing so much pollution that cars were considered the “green” alternative!

In 1896, the first driver convicted of speeding was handed a fine for “speeding” at 8 mph in a 2 mph zone, after a drawn-out 5-mile chase by a bicycle cop. Then, in 1899, a NYC cab driver was arrested for driving 12 mph, and he even got jail time for his reckless driving! But the first actual paper ticket was handed to an Ohio driver in 1904 for going 12 mph.

The first American car race took place in 1895 over a 54-mile distance. The winner finished in just over 10 hours, at an average speed of 7.5 mph! To put that into context, the average cyclist today bikes at approximately double that speed!

If an hour in traffic can feel like eternity, just imagine what Chinese drivers felt in 2010 while being stuck in a traffic jam that lasted almost two weeks! No closure or major catastrophe caused this tieup; rather, it was the simple result of too many vehicles clogging the highway. Some drivers reported to have moved less than a mile per day!

The Honda Accord is the most oft-stolen vehicle, with its 1997 model topping the list. And silver is the most common color among the stolen cars! While “Student Driver” stickers are a common sight on our roads, in Japan there’s an “elderly driver” mark on cars being driven by senior citizens over 75 years of age.

Car dealers’ license plate frames aren’t mandatory, but they sure can save you heartache and money. An auto leasing employee shares, “Quite often we receive calls from pedestrians noticing vehicles about to get towed or ticketed, and upon seeing our plate frames, call to give us a heads-up. We, in turn, contact the vehicle owner to forewarn them.”

152 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 20, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Unsurprisingly, the most common vehicles leased by our community’s growing families are, of course, minivans. “I can usually tell what sect they belong to, based on their color preference,” admits one dealer. “Some sects lean toward black and grey, others burgundy and blue. Then we have those who are adamant about getting red, while other sects would take anything but red.”

“Highway Bandits,” for most of us, would conjure images of old-time stories of bandits pouncing on travelers. However, it actually refers to car repair scammers who make tempting, yet deceiving, car repair offers, generally on the street. “Don’t get into conversation with them,” advises one car dealer. “Once you start, they don’t leave you alone. The best way to get rid of them is to ask for their number ‘so you can call them when you’re ready.’ They’ll usually disappear faster than they’ve appeared.”

BIZARRE TRAFFIC LAWS

Navigating winding roads can be an arduous task. But so long as these roads are in the U.S., you’re better off than in other countries, where traffic laws are as twisted as the roads themselves.

PHILIPPINES Ever needed a great, law-enforced excuse to skip work? In Manila, it is illegal for motorists to drive in certain areas in certain times of day, on certain days of the week, based upon the last digit on their license plate. For example, if your license plate ends with a 1 or a 2, you can be fined if caught driving in the designated areas, mainly those prone to congestion, at a time when license plates 1 or 2 are prohibited from passing.

RUSSIA Originally put into law to keep license plates visible during snow season, driving a dirty car in Russia can get you ticketed. What level of dirt warrants a ticket is up for interpretation. According to a Russian poll, the majority believes it refers to a muddy license plate, with most others suggesting that the ability to write “wash me” on the layer of filth is enough to get them ticketed. But since many motorists are unaware of the details of the law, they are bound to be taken advantage of by policemen.

JAPAN Pedestrians can walk confidently along wet roads in Japan, with the assurance that they won’t be struck with a rainstorm caused by a passing car, since splashing pedestrians with your car is illegal in Japan. Especially during the summer months, when roads are flooded by typhoons, there is greater enforcement of this law.

But wait — we’ve got some strange laws in our country too! Most are archaic, but comical nonetheless. For example, in Derby, Kansas, it is illegal to screech the car’s tires while driving, and in Decatur, Illinois, it is illegal to drive without a steering wheel. In Minnesota you can be charged with public nuisance if your vehicle leaves mud on the roads, and in Youngstown, Ohio, it’s against the law to run out of gas on its roads. And before crossing the Alabama State Line, be sure to remove your blindfold, as it’s against the law to drive while blindfolded. Aren’t we glad the authorities had the foresight to implement these all-important laws!

SPAIN Wearing vision-correcting glasses isn’t good enough, it seems. By law, motorists wearing glasses are also required to keep a spare set in their car at all times, in case their glasses break or go missing. Sponsored by:

Oy, they messed up all of our important papers!

I’m so scared. Maybe it’s the missionaries? Or the bad people destroying the factory? We must run and tell Mutty’s father!

What’s that up there? A camera?

All the investigating we did about our suspicions at the factory.

How could this be? We locked it up well!

It’s very important!

Maybe we can help you?

Help! Help! Call my father quickly!

Your father? The manager? He doesn’t like to be disturbed, especially now that he’s so busy with all the issues here.

No, I want my father now!

Should we call him? Maybe he’ll get angry.

Sorry to disturb you, but your son wants an urgent meeting with you.

Maybe it’s just another club competing with you.

This is a waste of time! Talk about this at home! There are much more urgent issues at the factory!

Abba, they’re following us! They planted spying devices in our clubhouse! Bye!

What? Are you sure?

Recap: The boys arrive to their clubhouse to see that someone had been there and planted a listening device.

THE ROCKLAND COUNTY Department

of Health has detected a recent outbreak of shigellosis in Monsey and Spring Valley. Shigellosis is a diarrheal disease caused by the Shigella germ and is spreading rapidly due to its contagious components, and close physical contact without necessary hygienic precautions serves as a ready breeding ground. Shigellosis is caused by direct contact with the bacteria, such as changing diapers of children or touching people who are infected with the germ and swallowing water while swimming or drinking water that has been contaminated. Symptoms of Shigella infection are usually experienced one or two days post exposure to the bacteria, and they include Diarrhea (sometimes bloody), stomach pain, fever, and feeling the need to pass stool even when the bowels are empty. Symptoms generally persist for 5-7 days though it could last as long as 4 weeks.

You can help prevent the spread of disease in Rockland County!
