I don’t usually reach out to comment on magazine content, and I didn’t even contact you last week when there was an ad that really disturbed me. This week, however, I saw your apology letter, and I’m reaching out to commend The Monsey View that you were strong enough to come out and write a clear-out apology, spelling out what was wrong. I told my children that they each must read this letter because they certainly noticed and discussed the ad last week. I give you a lot of credit for printing such a beautiful letter. A Reader
DRIVERS BEWARE As a service to the community, I am writing to inform drivers that Stephens Place on the corner of North Cole Avenue is poorly paved and dangerous. There are numerous potholes and small stones that cover that entire area. Just the other day I watched a car slide on the stones and lose control, hitting a pole. NON-STOP RINGING I am hoping that one of your readers can help me: Is there any any way to get off the list of these 15-times-a-day “Jewish telemarketer” phone calls? While I do love helping others and giving tzedakah, making me dash to the phone multiple times a day, including during bath and bedtime, is very annoying. RAISING THE BAR (Re: The Simple Secret to a Perfect Linen Closet, Issue 146) I really enjoy your magazine, but there is something I’d like to point out. I don’t think anyone can dispute the fact that many families struggle with parnassah on some level. Baruch Hashem, many of us have large families to provide for, and with tuition, housing and health insurance costs, I don’t need to convince anyone that making ends meet can be a challenge. Far too many families in our community are receiving government assistance for us to pretend that we have unlimited money to spend. I therefore ask that before printing an article with pictures of extremely lavish Seder tables or elaborately decorated linen closets with Ferragamo perfume and expensive linen sets, you preface it with: “This is not meant to be a standard of living. Please do not feel pressured to live this way.” Hard-working Mother and Responsible Spender THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS: As mentioned in the article, features like these are intended as a springboard for inspiration on how to maximize knickknacks, tableware or other items already in your home.
UNEXPECTED VISITOR This past Monday, May 7, I decided to take advantage of the weather and walked home through the Glen Hill shortcut, where I was met with the most frightening sight I was ever witness to. A huge brown bear was ambling among the trees, looking totally at home. Trying not to panic, I fiercely clutched the handles of my baby’s stroller and cautiously backed away in the direction from where I had come. Once on safer territory, I called Chaverim, who rushed to the scene and summoned the right departments to tackle the issue. I am publicizing this to bring awareness to all Monsey residents that there are bears in our area. Be on the lookout and be prepared, especially when taking shortcuts or visiting wooded areas. The general rule of thumb is to divide your body weight by two, and drink that many ounces per day. For instance, if you weigh 180 pounds, you need to drink approximately 90 ounces of water, which equals about 11.25 cups, each day. Additionally, if you are working out and sweating vigorously, you need to add more water to replace what is lost during exercise. The rule of thumb for exercising is to add an additional eight ounces of water (1 cup) for every fifteen minutes of exercise. So if you take a one-hour exercise class, make sure to drink an extra 4 cups of water aside from the 11.25. Any drink that has caffeine in it has the ability to dehydrate you rather than hydrate you. This is why teas, coffees, diet sodas, etc., should not be counted toward your water intake. In fact, the dehydrating effect of caffeine should actually be countered with
equivalent amounts of water. Therefore, if you drink a 20-ounce diet coke, it would be best to replace that with an additional 20 ounces of water! A great way to make drinking all this water easier is to make it pretty

Parshas Behar-Bechukosai

MANY YEARS AGO, I heard an inspiring story about a rebbetzin. Sadly, I cannot remember which rebbetzin it was, but the story is a valuable one. The rebbetzin was lying in the hospital in a coma. Even though she was not conscious, she continually reached up and made sure her hair was covered at all times. Doing mitzvos was engraved so deeply into her that she did not have to consciously order her body to do what was needed. (Perhaps someone reading this article can write in and identify the rebbetzin so that credit can go where due.) Parshas Bechukosai begins, “Im bechukosai teileichu v’es mitzvosai tishmeru va’asisem osam… — If you follow My statutes and observe My mitzvos and perform them, then I will provide your rains in their time, and the land will give its produce and the tree of the field will yield its fruit” (Vayikra 26:3). The Torah then goes on to list all of the brachos that will come upon us for complying, and all the klalos that will befall us if, chas v’shalom, we do not. The posuk appears to be redundant, first telling us “bechukosai teileichu” and then enjoining us “mitzvosai tishmeru.” If the Torah were telling us that we must perform mitzvos, it would have been enough to say so only once. By telling us twice, there must be another message here. Rashi explains this seeming redundancy by citing the Toras Kohanim regarding the deeper meaning of “teileichu.” Teileichu means “walk,” indicating a strenuous activity. He concludes that the significance for us in “v’chukosai teileichu” is that we must toil in the study of Torah. The Baal HaTanya explains the same redundancy in the posuk by taking note of the deeper meaning of the word “bechukosai.” Bechukosai has the same shoresh as the word chakikah (engraving). He explains that there are two ways to write something. One way is to apply ink to parchment. When a person writes with ink, the words never become an actual part of the parchment itself; the ink and the parchment remain separate entities. The other way of writing is by engraving. When something is

engraved in stone, it becomes an inseparable part of the stone itself. (Likkutei Torah, Bechukosai) How do we engrave the Torah in ourselves? The Sfas Emes in Parshas Chukas, noting the same relationship between chukas and chakikah, explains the way to engrave the Torah within ourselves in light of what Chazal say: We must make the Torah the foremost occupation of our lives. We must learn Torah, but we must also live it with every action we perform, and we must enlighten those actions with the proper intent. We must perform every action for the sake of Hashem, and look for Hashem’s hand in every situation. Whether a person is at work or at home, serving Hashem must be their primary focus at all times. If we want to tap into the wellspring of brachos as offered in this parsha, we must make serving Hashem and living a life of Torah our healthy obsession. It must be the first thing we think and do upon awakening with Modeh Ani, and the last things on our mind as we drift off to sleep after Krias Shema, and everything in between. From davening and saying brachos to the way we speak and behave, we must always be conscious of our actions and our intentions and direct them all toward Hashem. From the mitzvos ben adam l’makom to the mitzvos bein adam l’chavero, we must always keep striving for more and better. We must not allow our mistakes to derail us, but learn from them and correct them and always keep moving forward and upward. We must be strong and fearless in addressing our issues and in fixing them where needed. The rebbetzin in the hospital was a living embodiment of this principle. She and her hair covering were not two entities, like ink on paper. Rather, her hair covering was a part of herself, like words etched in stone. Presumably, all of the mitzvos she performed were as engraved as this as well. May we all work hard to engrave the Torah and mitzvos into our neshamos and not only merit all the brachos as promised, but bring the light of Torah into this world and bring honor to Hashem.

Additional Busing Days a Possibility as Voters Head to Polls for School Board Elections THE PROPOSED 2018-2019 East Ramapo school budget, which will be up for voter approval on May 15, includes proposed changes that could include four additional days of busing for yeshivah students when public schools are not in session. The school board voted in March to disband its transportation operations and outsource its busing, a move that could lead to a $1.7 million reduction in the amount spent on getting the 33,500 children in the district to and from school, reported The Journal News. Currently, the East Ramapo transportation office employs 17 people and has 18 buses, 12 of which have exceeded their expected lifespan of ten years and five more reaching the decade mark soon. Typically, private busing companies only keep buses in use for seven years. The proposed budget calls for adjusting the public and private school calendars so that they are better aligned, a savings that will allow the district to restore busing to yeshivos on four days when public schools are not in session. The school board slashed 14 days of transportation to yeshivos several years ago, creating massive carpooling headaches for parents. If approved, East Ramapo would provide busing to yeshivah students during the public schools’ week-long winter break in February 2019. State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia
approved the proposed budget on April 24, but she warned that if voters vote down the budget, the school district would “revert to its current transportation schedule,” which would not include the four extra days of transportation. The number of private school students in East Ramapo has doubled over the past thirteen years and is anticipated to continue growing each year. East Ramapo’s transportation needs are the second largest in the state, with only New York City busing a larger number of children.
Cleaning Girl Arrested for Multiple Jewelry Thefts in KJ A CENTRAL VALLEY WOMAN was arrested after jewelry that she sold to a local pawnshop was found to belong to a Kiryas Joel woman who had reported the items stolen several months earlier. VIN News reported that 30-year-old Maria Caudillo had sold two wedding bands, two engagement rings, two bracelets and two watches to a nearby pawnshop. Four of those items were positively identified by a Kiryas Joel resident who reported a wedding band, engagement ring, diamond bracelet and gold watch missing after Caudillo had cleaned her home on January 15. Several other village residents had also filed police

reports saying that Caudillo had stolen items from their homes. One involved the theft of $130 in cash from a playroom drawer in July; another incident had a resident alleging that several unspecified pieces of jewelry were reportedly taken in November. Caudillo was charged with multiple counts of larceny in the third degree and is being held at the Orange County jail in lieu of $30,000 cash/$60,000 secured bond. Police are continuing their investigation, said Trooper Steven Nevel of the New York State Police. Anyone who may have hired Caudillo to clean for them are asked to contact police at 845-782-8497.

BROWNIE FUDGE BASE 10 T. butter or margarine, melted 1 cup sugar 2 eggs ¾ cup flour 6 T. cocoa ¼ tsp. baking powder ¼ tsp. salt
For best results, bring all cheeses to room temperature before starting to work.
FUDGE BASE DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan with parchment paper and grease the sides. 2. In a medium bowl, combine the melted butter/margarine and sugar (by hand). Add eggs and mix until combined.

CHEESECAKE DIRECTIONS 1. Using a mixer, beat the cream cheese, sugar and flour on low speed until completely combined and smooth. Use low speed to reduce the amount of air added to the batter, which can cause cracks. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. 2. Add the sour cream, and mix on low until well-combined.
6. Wrap the outside (bottom and sides) of the pan well with two layers of aluminum foil and place the pan inside another larger pan (like a roaster, for example). Fill the larger pan with warm water until about halfway up the side of the springform pan. The water should not go above the top edge of the aluminum foil.
4. Add the eggs one at a time. Mix to combine after each egg. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
7. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Turn off the oven and leave door closed for another 30 minutes. Crack open the door of the oven for another 30 minutes to allow the cheesecake to continue cooling slowly. This helps to prevent cracking.
5. When the brownie is done baking, reduce the oven temperature to 300°, remove the brownie from the oven, and pour the cheesecake batter evenly over the brownie.
8. Remove the cheesecake from the oven and remove the foil wrapping. Refrigerate until firm, 5–6 hours or overnight. Once it’s completely cool, you can remove it from the springform pan.
3. Dissolve the coffee in the boiling water, add it to the cream cheese mixture, and mix on low until well. Add the vanilla extract and mix.
TOPPING DIRECTIONS 1. Place the chocolate chips in a small, heatproof bowl. 2. Bring the heavy cream, dissolved coffee and sugar to a boil. 3. Pour the hot liquid over the chocolate chips and allow it to sit for 2-3 minutes. Then whisk until smooth. 4. Pour the chocolate ganache onto the cheesecake and spread it
evenly. 5. To make the whipped cream, whip the whip on high speed, until stiff peaks form. Fold in the instant vanilla pudding. 6. Pipe the cream onto the top of the cheesecake. (I used Wilton 1E tip.) 7. Top with Rosemarie curls. 8. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Pour it into the cheese mixture and mix on low until combined. 3. Add eggs one at a time, mixing to combine after each one. 4. Pour into the 10-inch springform pan. Place large pan, filled halfway with water, on the bottom rack of oven. Place the springform pan on the center oven rack. Bake on 350° for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Turn the oven off and leave cheesecake inside for an additional 30 minutes. Remove from oven. Allow to cool completely.

For best results, bring all cheeses to room temperature before starting to work. While this cheesecake can be baked in a 10-inch-round disposable pan, using a springform pan will result in smoother edges.
CRUST DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line the bottom of a 10-inch springform pan with parchment paper and grease the sides. 2. Combine cookies and melted butter/margarine, and press into bottom of springform pan.
CHEESECAKE DIRECTIONS 1. Mix cheeses with sugar on low speed until well-combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. 2. Mix cornstarch with milk until no clumps remain. Pour it into the cheese mixture, and mix on low until combined. 3. Add eggs one at a time, mixing to combine after each one. 4. Pour into the 10-inch springform pan. Place large pan halfway filled with water on the bottom rack of your oven. Place the springform pan on the center oven rack. Bake on 350° for 1 hour. (For a more perfect cheesecake, I use convection bake.) Turn the oven off and leave inside the oven for an additional half hour. Remove from oven. Allow to cool completely.
TOPPING DIRECTIONS Top the cheesecake with the sour cream and baklava right before serving. (Baklava topping can be frozen separately.)

1 pack Unger’s phyllo dough
1. Defrost phyllo dough overnight in the fridge.
½ cup oil (for basting pastry sheets) 2 cups chopped walnuts
2. Remove from fridge about ½ hour before preparing the recipe.
½ tsp. cinnamon
GLAZE DIRECTIONS
GLAZE
1. In a medium saucepan, combine all the ingredients for the glaze. Bring to a boil.

2. Reduce heat to medium/low and continue cooking, covered, for 4–5 minutes.

3. Allow to cool.
PASTRY DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 325°. 2. Using an inverted disposable or springform pan as a guide, cut the entire pile of pastry sheets to the size and shape of the cake. 3. Discard remaining edges of dough. 4. Cover the stack of phyllo sheets you are using with a storage bag and a damp cloth or towel on top of that. (Keep it covered the entire time to avoid dried-out dough.) 5. Combine the walnuts and cinnamon and set aside 6. Place one phyllo sheet on a parchment-lined baking sheet and baste with oil. 7. Place 2 more sheets on top of the first one, making sure to brush the top of each one with oil before placing the next sheet on top. 8. Sprinkle about ⅓ cup of the

walnut mixture on top. 9. Pile on 2 more sheets, brushing the top of each one with oil. 10. Continue this pattern, piling two sheets of dough brushed with oil, and then ⅓ cup of nuts, until you have 3–4 sheets left. 11. Top your stack with the last few pastry sheets. Don’t forget the oil on top of each one, including the last sheet. 12. Preslice the baklava so it’ll be easier to slice after it is baked, but don’t cut completely through to the bottom (so that it remains in one piece). 13. Bake for about 30 minutes or until the top of your baklava looks golden-brown. 14. Remove from oven and immediately pour cooled glaze on top of hot pastry. 15. Let sit 4–6 hours or overnight to set.

1. Preheat the oven to 350° and prepare cookie sheets with parchment paper. 2. Prepare all the ingredients on your counter. 3. Cream butter and sugars together by hand, until well-combined. Mix in the egg and the vanilla. Mix well. Add the flour, cornstarch and baking powder, and mix until combined. 4. Make tablespoon-sized balls and press them down slightly. Bake for about 8 minutes, until edges are just starting to brown. 5. Allow cookies to cool.
COOKIES The cornstarch in the recipe helps the cookies retain their shape.

STRAWBERRY FROSTING This frosting is a very bright pink. If you prefer a more pastel pink, use the frosting featured in the cupcake recipe.

1/2 to 3/4 of a raspberrry jello
4 cups confectioners’ sugar

Visit Culinary Depot for springform pans, piping bags, cookie scoops, cake carriers and all your baking needs.
6. To make the frosting, combine the butter or margarine with 2 cups of confectioners’ sugar. Mix until smooth and scrape down the sides of the bowl. 7. Add the remaining confectioners’ sugar and water. Mix until smooth. Add in half of the jello and mix well. If you prefer a brighter color, add some more jello. If the frosting is too dry, add a bit more water, 1 tablespoon at a time. 8. Pipe the frosting onto the cookies. I used the Ateco 844 tip, starting in the center and slowly moving outward around the circumference of the cookie.
I love the Ateco 844 tip. It makes such pretty swirls and flowers whichever way it’s maneuvered.

For Moshe it was just a nice place to visit. For Yakov it was his last chance to make amends with his father before his time is up. The monochromatic panorama with nary a color in sight (save the red cardinals) is now past us. The whites, grays and browns of winter have morphed into bright, happy colors. You notice the green blush on the trees hinting at the leaves yet to come, the yellow forsythias, golden daffodils, smileyfaced pansies and tulips of every hue (provided Bambi didn’t get a whiff of them yet!), and you’re thinking, “Okay, it’s time to liven up my barren porch, and bring some living, breathing, colorful flowers to proudly proclaim that SPRING IS HERE, baruch Hashem!” So here are a couple of tips on navigating the “Oh dear, where do I begin?” maze. This’ll be loads of fun, painless and downright empowering!

LIGHT CONDITION: The foremost factor to consider is light condition. Certain flowers are sun lovers, while others only thrive in the shade — so here’s the deal. Sunny translates to 6+ hours of direct sunlight per day. Dappled shade (same as part sun) means 2 to 4 hours of direct sunlight per day, and last, shady is any area receiving indirect light (and of course dense shade is low light or no light). As much as you adore ruffled petunias, if your porch is in the shade, you’re not bringing them home from Home Depot. And if you’re absolutely awed by bleeding hearts, feel free to drool over them in the store, but do not buy them for your sunny entry. Flowers that need sun but don’t get it will not be able to produce chlorophyll, will lose their green color and will subsequently die. Shade lovers, if exposed to too much sun, will roast and toast, shrivel up, and succumb. As for those part-sun/part-shade flowers, it’s important to note that the afternoon sun is stronger and hotter, so position them accordingly. Here are a few tried-and-tested favorites of mine to fit your unique requirements. BLEEDING HEARTS

So now you’re driving to Secor Farms in your Odyssey (or U-Haul). The nursery will prove to be an all-out pleasant assault to your visual and olfactory senses. The choices are beyond awesome, guaranteed to wow the bucks right outta your pocket. But you will be disciplined and somewhat restrained and will choose only those flowers that fit your category, and of course, tug at your heartstrings. The cardinal rule is this: If the fleurs do not talk to you and say, “Bring me home,” do not attempt to do so — there’ll be no love lost at home either. You arrive home awash with glee over your new friends and gingerly arrange them on your deck. Bear in mind that these marvels need almost as much care as your children do. They need to be fed (fertilized), bathed (watered), and conversed with (that’s right, like, “How positively radiant you look this morning, Zinny, I love your new colorful garb”). Treat ‘em right, and they’ll perform.

Whereas we dine three times a day, your flowers need only indulge every second week or so. One of my favorite fertilizers is Miracle Gro, especially the one labeled Bloom Booster (which has a high-phosphorus content to boost flower production). There are, of course, other Miracle Gro compounds specific to other plants with different needs. It’s imperative to follow the directions on the box exactly as indicated; too much of this good thing can scorch and burn the plant, and from there and on it’ll be downhill all the way.
In regard to watering, refrain from doing so when the sun is directly overhead — the sun will simply draw out that which you’ve poured in, and then some. The best time to water is before 7 a.m. (gasp), giving the water time to be absorbed before the sun gets really hot, or late in the afternoon. Night watering promotes mold and mildew because the leaves do not get a chance to dry out — not an ideal situation at all. Water at room temperature is best for your baskets and pots (would you enjoy a frigid shower?!), and administer slowly until you see trickling coming out of the holes on the bottoms of the pots. Just a note, planting anything in a container that does not have drainage holes spells doom for the plant — the roots will sit in pooled water and rot. You’ll easily be able to determine when your flowers need a drink: Simply insert your finger up to the first joint and see whether it’s dry. If it is, it’s time to water, otherwise, wait a bit. Deep watering is much more beneficial than shallow spritzing; your aim is to train the roots to grow southbound in search of water, rather than stay close to the surface — shallow roots means weaker plants. Try to concentrate on watering closer to the base rather than directly overhead.
PEST CONTROL:
Any threats to your flowers’ well-being must be dealt with ASAP. Spider mites, aphids and sooty mold are just a few of the marauders that will suck the life right out of your plants in a matter of a few days! Keep some NEEM on hand for the duration of the summer months; it’s a safe pesticide that, when applied correctly, will send these critters to a better place.

Okay, fellow gardeners, congratulations! You’re now officially members of the Green Thumb Society. Show me some spirit! Scoot over to the flower nursery and let your creativity flow! There are absolutely no rules as to color combinations. Who says that red and pink clash? You’re the boss here now — if you simply must have that fiery neon orange zinnia share space with the strawberry calibrachoa, intermingled with cascading purple petunias, then, by all means, go for it. Just keep in mind that muted colors, such as pinks, peaches and whites, are more striking in shadier spots, whereas bold colors, like red, orange, yellow and purple, positively pop in the sunny areas where the sun will excite them. MY PARTING LINE TO YOU IS THIS: Every morning when you greet your mates in the garden, proclaim the words, “ ”מה רבו מעשיך ה׳with great gusto, as only Hashem can make one’s garden grow and flourish — not us; we’re just helpers! It’s to Him that we owe our gratitude and thankfulness for bestowing upon our world an astonishing array of flowers in every color, shape and size, some mildly scented, some intoxicatingly so. The Taste of Tradition BY: SUSSY KRAUS There are many beautiful reasons why we eat kreplach on Shavuos. Regarding the symbolic shape, Rabbi Dovid Meisels says, “A triangle remains a triangle in every direction.” A segol, which relates to segulah, is made of three dots and also forms a triangular shape, and no matter how it’s rotated, it retains its shape. Similarly, no matter how we turn, we remain the Am Segulah, the Chosen Nation. One of the Talmidei Baal Shem writes that kreplach are eaten on the three yomim tovim when we “shlug”: Yom Kippur, Hoshana Rabbah and Purim — kaparos, hoshanos and Haman. But why Shavuos? That’s when we received the Torah, which we should use as a tool to “shlug” the Yetzer Hara. I am presenting two kreplach recipes: one for a cream cheese dough and one for a butter dough. Both are absolutely heavenly, but I tend to lean toward the latter. I must admit that I never enjoyed kreplach until I found this butter recipe; its soft and fluffy exterior and divinely sweet interior creates just the perfect combination. The buttery dough is a little more difficult to work with than the cream cheese dough, but it is totally worth the extra effort.

DIRECTIONS I do not have the luxury of owning a milchig mixer, but if you do, just add all ingredients and mix. For the rest of us, it can easily be done by hand.
1. Combine the flour, sugar and salt in a bowl. It is important to measure the flour properly as you want the perfect dough. A measuring cup with a flat top works best, as you can fill it to the top and flatten it with a knife. Mix it well, as the dispersion of the sugar and salt in the flour will prevent clumping. 2. Add the eggs, cream cheese and sour cream, and mix with a wooden spoon until everything is coated in flour. 3. Continue kneading the dough with your hands until you can form a nice ball. 4. Add the filling ingredients to a bowl and mix well, either with a hand blender or by hand. Once the filling is prepared, put up a pot of water to boil. 5. Flour your work surface well, but not too generously, and divide the dough in four. Roll out one part thinly and shape into a square as best as possible. 6. Cut the dough into 12 or 16 squares, depending on how big you want your kreplach to be. A pizza cutter works very well at this point. Put a spoonful of the filling mixture in the center of each square. 7. Lift one corner of the square and fold it over to form a nice triangle. Pinch the corners with your fingers until it is well sealed. 8. When the water has come to a rolling boil, drop each well-sealed krepel into the pot. Make sure not to put in too many at a time. The kreplach will sink to the bottom of the pot, and after a few minutes, they will rise to the surface, indicating that they are done. Remove each krepel with a slotted spoon. 9. Once they’re cooked, you have several coating options: You can coat them in bread crumbs, lemon cookie crumbs or leave them plain. Put the kreplach in a 9x13 pan with a piece of baking paper between the layers. Do not stack them one on top of each other, as they will stick together and be difficult to separate. Store in the freezer until ready to use.

DIRECTIONS 1. In a pot, add the milk, butter, vanilla sugar, sugar and salt. Heat until the butter is fully melted and the milk is steaming. 2. Add the flour and eggs and mix well with a spoon. 3. Finish up the kneading with your hands to form a nice, smooth ball. Let the dough cool a bit until it is easier to handle. 4. Melt one stick of butter and pour into a bowl. 5. Toast some bread crumbs in a frying pan with some oil, sugar and a pinch of salt. Put it into another plate. 6. Sprinkle some cornstarch on your work surface and divide the dough in four. Roll out dough thinly, one at a time, adding cornstarch or flour as necessary. 7. Cut dough into squares, the number depending on how big or small you want your kreplach to be. 8. Mix the filling ingredients and add a dollop to each square. Fold into a triangle and pinch the edges. 9. Make sure that the kreplach are well-sealed, and drop them into boiling water. Once the kreplach rise, they are done. 10. Remove with a slotted spoon, and very gently dip into the melted butter and immediately into the toasted bread crumbs. Remember, these are very fragile at this stage until they cool off. 11. Layer in a 9x13 pan with baking paper to separate each layer.

Warming Kreplach On Shavuos, remove the kreplach from the freezer the night before serving to give them a chance to thaw properly. You can warm them by frying them in a buttered frying pan or in the oven (if you have one on and it happens to be milchig). Otherwise, it is a great idea to get a chafing rack and two Sterno 6-hour fuel cans (they cost approximately $6 in Amazing Savings). Put a roaster pan with 4 cups of hot water onto the rack, and put your 9x13 pan of kreplach on one side and another 9x13 pan of blintzes or anything else you would like to warm on the other side. Put it up early as it needs a good two to three hours to thoroughly warm through. This will save you from having an open flame or oven for three days. As soon as the meal is over, the flame should be out and the Sterno can be discarded.

It’s that time of year again, when people pop out of their houses like tulips, faces tipped upward to catch the first rays of spring’s welcome sun. For many, though, the season of rebirth is welcomed with runny noses and itchy eyes, for along with the flowers, allergies awaken. Despite being commonly called “rose fever,” the main culprits behind the sniffles and sneezes are actually tree and grass pollen; flower pollen is only minimally dispersed by wind. The term “hay fever” is also a misnomer, with neither hay being the allergen, nor fever one of its symptoms. Characterized by inflammation of eye and nasal tissue, allergic rhinitis, as it’s officially called, is estimated to affect nearly 30 percent of the worldwide population. With so many people suffering from seasonal allergies, the attempt to alleviate symptoms is a pursuit of its own.

MEDICAL OPTIONS Commonly prescribed medications for allergic rhinitis include antihistamines, steroids or a combination of both. These medications are available in multiple forms, ranging from pills, liquids, eye drops, creams and nose sprays, to injectable steroids in the case of emergency. (Other medical options such as decongestants are not mentioned in this article but may be prescribed as needed.)

ANTIHISTAMINES Histamine is responsible for those watery eyes and runny nose. When an allergen enters the body, histamine is released, which, as part of its mechanism, causes blood vessels to widen, resulting in itch and other symptoms of seasonal allergies. Antihistamines block histamines (hence the name), helping to knock out symptoms. There are several choices when it comes to oral antihistamines, and sometimes an allergy sufferer will have to try multiple types before finding their best med. Common ones include Zyrtec (cetirizine), Claritin (loratadine) and Allegra (fexofenadine). These antihistamines are called “second-generation” antihistamines, and for many people, induce less drowsiness than “firstgeneration” antihistamines, such as Benadryl (diphenhydramine). Most also have a longer half-life in the body, meaning less time devoted to pill-popping. There are also antihistamine eye drops and nasal sprays, such as Pantanese and Astepro sprays and Zatidor eye drops. These should not be confused with steroidal products.

Many doctors believe that steroids are the go-to drugs for seasonal allergies, but steroids, when used wrongly, come with a host of dangerous side effects. When used in a nasal spray — such as Flonase, Nasonex or Rhinocort — addiction may occur, with side effects such as swelling of the nasal membranes, severe nosebleeds and painful rashes. Nowadays, powerful steroid nasal sprays are being sold over-the-counter, leading many allergy sufferers to use these drugs without even knowing that they are using steroids, which can lead to significant health issues. Steroids in any form should only be used extremely sparingly when other methods have failed, and only then under the guidance of a doctor well-trained in steroid use and addiction. Addiction of the eye and skin can also occur when steroids are inappropriately used. Steroidal eye drops commonly prescribed are Omnipred, Ocu-dex and Prednisol. Before beginning any allergy medication, it is vital to know what you are taking, be it an antihistamine or a steroid. Misuse, and more specifi-
MEDICATED RASH RELIEF Steroid creams can safely be used by some individuals by following a very specific method, as discovered by dermatologist and UCLA Professor of Medicine, Dr. Marvin Rapaport:
PRIOR USAGE HISTORY Patients who have used steroids in the past may be, or may have been, addicted. More steroids would aggravate their condition further. Steroid addiction must be ruled out before using more steroids.
AGE OF PATIENT Babies should never, ever use steroid creams. Their skin is very thin and body size very small, causing them to absorb unsafe amounts of the medication.
AREA OF USE The face, groin and armpits absorb large amounts of steroids and become damaged very quickly. These areas should never have steroids applied to them.
TYPE OF STEROID There are seven categories of steroids, ranging from least potent (category 7) to most potent (category 1). Only a midstrength steroid should be used as needed. Too potent can be dangerous, and less potent will require long-term use to see results, which also is problematic. Make sure you know what you are using!
LENGTH OF USE Steroids can only be safely used in short bursts. Dr. Rapaport only recommends using for three or four days at a time, and then the cream must be packed away for a full month before being used again.

There are times when it is necessary to use inhaled, oral or injectable steroids to treat or prevent asthmatic flaring, which can happen during allergy season. In case of need, one should be under the guidance of a doctor who is wellversed in both benefits of steroids, as well as steroid addiction and withdrawal.
LIFESTYLE CHANGES Though lifestyle changes alone can seldom relieve an allergy sufferer from symptoms completely, they can help by minimizing exposure to allergens. Here are some tips: • Stay indoors during morning hours. Pollen levels usually reach their peak between 5 and 10 a.m. • The windier and warmer the weather, the greater the pollen; prepare accordingly. • Despite the pleasure of fresh air on a spring day, opt for closed doors and windows if your allergies are acting up. Turn on the air conditioner instead. • Do not tend to lawn care immediately after a rain, especially if it is ragweed season (end of summer) and you have an allergy. It is an asthma/allergy attack waiting to happen! Rain causes pollen to burst open, increasing chances of an allergic episode. • Shower before bed to avoid taking allergens to sleep with you. • Skip the clothesline (or porch, more commonly used here in Monsey). Drying clothing outdoors is a sure way to guarantee an allergy attack.
ALTERNATIVE ALLERGY MANAGEMENT Nobody likes to take medication when they don’t have to. Thankfully, there are non-medicinal forms of treatment that people have found helpful. They can be used in conjunction with modern medicine or alone. Here’s a sampling:
THE NETI POT Neti pots, though considered an alternative treatment, are gaining popularity even in medical circles. Many doctors now recommend their use. But what is a neti pot? Put simply, it looks somewhat like a teapot, but is used for rinsing allergens out of the nose instead of serving beverages. To use a neti pot, purified water is mixed with salt (not regular table salt) to create a saline solution, and the mixture is poured into one nostril and exits through the other. The routine is then repeated on the other side. The use of purified water is an absolute must, together with daily cleaning of the pot, due to bacteria that can build up and then enter the
graduates brain via the nose. Sounds paranoid? In 2011, two people died from use of non-sterile water in their neti pots.
LOCAL RAW HONEY The International Archives of Allergy and Immunology reported in a 2011 study that participants who ate one spoonful of raw, local honey daily before allergy season began had 60% less symptomatic days than the control group, who did not eat the honey. Unfortunately, there have not been many studies conducted on local raw honey, so the jury is still out on whether or not this method works to actually alleviate symptoms, though there are many who claim it works well. The thought behind eating local raw honey is that bees, who are constantly in contact with pollen, deposit small reserves of pollen into the honey they make, thereby exposing the eater to their allergen in small increments. In short, it is immunotherapy in a natural form. Does it work? That’s for you to say!
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) has long been known for its healing properties. From skin wounds to fungal issues, ACV is held in high regard by many users. In terms of allergies, a spoonful a day (mixed in a glass of water) may keep the doctor away. It is important to note that there are two types of ACV: the real stuff and the pasteurized stuff. When ACV is used in a medical capacity, always opt for the really smelly, dark brown version that has the words “With Mother” on it. No, Mama ain’t bottled up; “mother” refers to the enzymes and probiotics found in natural ACV. Placing a spoonful of ACV in a vaporizer is also said to be a great way to get relief from allergies.
SKIN ISSUES Along with the ever-running noses and itchy eyes often come skin rashes. Sometimes the rashes will appear even without other symptoms. ANTIHISTAMINES, as noted above, can relieve the intensity of the itch and quite often help the rash to resolve in entirety. ZINC-BASED CREAMS can also calm inflammation and reduce itch. Balmex is a great option to layer on top of emollients when itchy. OIL-BASED EMOLLIENTS should be used frequently on itchy rashes, especially within two minutes of exiting a very warm shower or bath. Lotions, which are water-based, usually aggravate rashes and should be avoided. Two of the most-tolerated emollients are Aquaphor and Eucerin, though Vaseline is often the only emollient tolerated by people with very severe rashes. NOTHING quite captures the Shavuos nostalgia as the sand art bouquets of my childhood. I’d sit over my sand art for hours, perfecting the pattern within the glass vase that would grace our Shavuos table. But come Motzei Shavuos, and that toiled-over piece of art no longer held much meaning. But I’ve got something better! Now you can make sand art bouquets you can actually eat! It is simple enough for young kids to make without the need for an adult to cook or cut. And when the craft has served its decorative purpose, it makes for a delicious candy-dipping treat!

1. Lay out candy in a flower design. Lightly spray skewers and toothpicks with oil so candy can slide through more easily.

THE VERY FIRST HOUSE I organized taught me many things. I learned that just because someone is lacking in the organizational department does not mean they are any less of a housewife. I also learned to have patience, as not everyone thinks like an organizer. Most interestingly, though, I learned that a house can seem very clean on the surface while the insides of the closets will tell a whole other story. When Mrs. Klein* — who graciously allowed me to share her story on condition of anonymity — invited me in, my first thought was how neat and organized everything looked. I followed her through the house, wondering all the while why she felt it necessary to hire me. That thought instantly evaporated upon opening the first closet. It seemed that Mrs. Klein’s cleaning method was to simply stuff any item that was left out into the nearest available closet. The Klein children were growing up and were beginning to feel embarrassed when their friends saw their closets. This realization led Mrs. Klein to finally take action and call me. We walked through the house, and in each room anew, I was shocked at the disparity between the room itself and what was going on behind those innocent-looking closet

doors. The worst closet, by far, was the utility closet in the laundry room. It had accumulated years’ worth of junk found on the upper floor of the house. There were piles of school projects, balls and balls of yarn (Mrs. Klein had once unsuccessfully tried her hand at knitting), dozens of books, and even a fish tank! Confirming my suspicion, Mrs. Klein explained that she never even cleaned that closet for Pesach as it was too overwhelming; she simply sold it with the chometz, year after year. The utility closet can be a complicated and confusing closet to set up correctly. It is, technically, just a closet for miscellaneous items, and any closet that doesn’t have a clearly defined purpose can easily end up being just one big mess. The solution to this is labeled containers, preferably clear, for each group of items. This keeps each individual object exactly where it belongs, even among the many different varieties of things that are stored there. Additionally, I have found that if every item is in a container, people are much less likely to stuff in random objects whenever they’re unsure where these things should go. I prefer containers that have a latch on either end. These are easy to open
and close without having to remove any containers that may be stacked on top of the one you need. In this closet, you want to store electrical supplies such as wires and plugs, batteries, extra flashlights, and light bulbs. I like to separate light bulbs into a few containers — for chandelier bulbs, standard bulbs, fluorescent bulbs, etc. — as they take up a lot of room, and this also makes it easier to grab the one you need without having to sort through dozens of options. Generally, it’s best to separate supplies into a lot of small containers as opposed to grouping a few item types together into one big container. For example, rather than having one container for all wires, separate them into a few small containers — one for extension cords, one for chargers, etc. Using this method helps avoid the chaotic mess that some utility closets tend to become. If you do not have a garage, your tools belong in this closet as well. In fact, even if you do have a garage, storing commonly used household tools in the utility closet is still a good idea. The utility closet is usually quicker to access than the garage, so you’ll be less lazy about returning the tool to its proper home. A step stool is another smart thing to keep in the utility closet. They are so useful, and you’ll find it very convenient to have one nearby the next time you need to change a lightbulb. The best option is the type that folds flat since you can simply store it on a shelf. However, as I said earlier, the utility closet really is a miscellaneous closet, and all you have to do is make sure everything is in properly labeled containers, and it will work beautifully. In this closet, you’ll want containers for extra school supplies and for gift wrap, along with any other things you use when wrapping a present — such as bows and ribbons, for example. Being that rolls of wrapping paper are so long and therefore hard to store, look out for gift wrap organizers that are meant to hang on a door. I highly recommend using one. A good rule of thumb for the utility closet: If you can’t find a good home for an item, you can put it into the utility closet, as long as it has a labeled container. As parents, we hope that our children will grow up to be upstanding adults who have developed their middos and have grown to be exceptional human beings. To achieve this goal, we keep an eye on our children’s behavior and are often quick to criticize, correct or make demands. However, before we decide which middos we hope to “fix” in our kinderlach, it is important to know that our job is only to help them refine their character, not change it completely. The following example will help to illustrate this point. Little Moishe is playing with other children. Moishe has assigned the role of king to himself and has instructed the others to be his badiners, his servants. With time, Moishe’s parents notice that this pattern keeps repeating itself in different forms. For example, one day Moishe is the manager and the others are his workers, and the next day, he organizes a neighborhood performance and, predictably, takes the main role for himself. The other children are given only minor roles, whose main purpose is to make him look good on stage. Some parents become overly concerned when they observe such behavior. They worry that perhaps their child has the terrible middah of ga’avah. He is arrogant and tries to show that he is better than everyone else. They wonder whether it’s best to ignore his behavior, since Moishe doesn’t actually bully or hurt anyone, or whether they must reprimand him for always wanting to be at the center of attention. The tulip’s etymological history is a quite surprising one! The word tulip is Turkish for turban, named so for the flower’s turban-like shape. Netherlands is not only the tulip capital of the world, but also known as the “flower shop of the world,” holding the title as the largest tulip producer and manufacturer. It wasn’t always so, though. In fact, until the 16th century, Europe’s soil was probably never home to those beauties. Tulips were planted in the Himalayan area, from where they were brought to Turkey (where they were named). It was around 1560 when they were introduced to the Netherlands, where they quickly became popular, and from there they were cultivated on a massive scale.
Favored as they were (and still are), it seems the tulip has yet to win the popularity contest. The most popular flower is the rose, followed by the chrysanthemum. After that, the tulip takes third place.
The largest flower garden in the world is Keukenhof in Holland, not far from Amsterdam, where more than 7 million bulbs grow during tulip season (mid-March to mid-May). But tulip fields showcasing breathtaking patterns and colors are found in many spots throughout Holland.
Crazy for tulips? So were a whole bunch of people during the Dutch Golden Age, causing the prices to rise unproportionately in the mid-1600s. At the height of Tulip Mania (how this phenomenon was named), single tulip bulbs were said to have been valued at astronomical prices, some higher, in fact, than diamonds! Many middle-class and even poor families speculated in the tulip market. Some went as far as mortgaging their homes and businesses to purchase bulbs, in the hopes of striking it rich by selling the bulbs at even higher prices (of course, the sales and resales all occurred without the bulb ever leaving the ground). When the market crashed in 1637, it left many Dutch families in financial ruin.
There are 150 wild tulip species, and some 3,700 varieties of tulips in almost every color (although for a tulip to be blue, Photoshop is required). One famous tulip color is “Queen of the Night.” Appearing almost glossy black, this flower is a very deep, dramatic purple. Another interestingly named tulip is “Apricot Beauty,” whose name is inspired by its sweet, fruity smell.

Perusing the tulip selection at the florist, many opt for the beauty in the streaked petals (or rather tepals, as the tulip’s petals and sepals are collectively called) of some tulips. While today, most are a deliberate result of breeding, in the past, streaked tulips were a sign of flowers infected by a virus. Even today, infected tulips are still cultivated for their beautiful results, although it’s illegal to do so in many places.
Most species of tulips reach a height between 2.7 and 4 inches. Interestingly enough, the tulip can continue growing even after being cut from the ground, sometimes shooting up another inch in a vase of water!
Part of the lily family, tulips have some interesting cousins that don’t seem to resemble them at all, among them the onion.
Tulip petals are edible, but that isn’t to say you would actually enjoy to have its unpleasant taste on your tongue. Unpalatable as they are, high-end restaurateurs opt for vivid colors for gorgeous plating.
Give the tulip the ideal climate and care, and you’ll have breathtaking results, but they’re quite picky regarding where they grow well. Tulips need temperate climate, as well as low night temperature during the spring (making Holland the perfect breeding ground). While they are perennials, many treat tulips as annuals when the habitat isn’t perfect, because in less-than-ideal conditions, they do not last from year to year. Tulips need a lot of care and a lot of time, too. For bulbs to blossom in the spring, they have to be planted as early as the previous summer, as for proper growth, this species requires a long dormant period in cooler temperature. However, if you miss the boat, it’s not always too late. Tulips can be “fooled” into blooming early when they are stored in a very cool place, such as a fridge, for up to 12 weeks.
Don’t expect tulips to last too long on your lawn here in Monsey, as deer, rabbits and squirrels think you’ve placed them there just for their eating pleasure.

Allergies are nothing to sneeze at. More than 500 million individuals across the globe suffer from allergies. Among them, 50 million deal with seasonal allergies, which have become a widespread phenomenon. די ווייטאג איז גרויס .אידן שטוינען: ביסטו דאך משלנו ,די סוכה איז דיר צו הייס? גיי ,ביסטו דאך געגאנגען, נו ,צו וואס שטויסטו אין די סוכה?
