A KOLLEL WIFE SPEAKS... About a year ago, a woman wrote in saying that these days, kollel wives have to pick up a lot of the slack at home for their husbands who are sitting and learning. After that letter, a lot of people wrote in to defend and support the kollel way of life. There seemed to be an inundation of responses, so I kept quiet at the time, but there is one more point that I would like to add. Kollel husbands are often much more involved in helping with the kids and errands and household chores than working husbands are. I am not blaming or putting down working husbands at all; I understand that they must get out early to commute to their jobs and clock in on time and stay late hours to finish their work. But making it sound as though kollel wives are suffering because their husbands are learning is far from reality. The reality is that our husbands are the ones who carpool the kids to and from their babysitters, playgroups and preschools, they are the ones who come home for lunch, at which point they can take a child to the doctor or run to the grocery for us, and they are the ones who are home to help with bedtime before running back for night seder. My friends whose husbands are working, especially those who commute to Manhattan, Brooklyn or Connecticut, etc., are the ones who have to get through the day and navigate all its obstacles alone. They do not see their husbands nearly as much as I do. Every family has to do what works for them, so please do not judge kollel husbands when we kollel wives are not only happy that our husbands are learning, but are also benefiting from it. School breakfast is a critical support for struggling families trying to stretch limited resources and provides children a significant portion of the nutrition they need to learn and be healthy.” Yes, I did think the program was implemented because of two-working-parent families, but the end result is the same. Everyone shares the same quantity of hours and minutes in a day. Some people use their time to bake batches of delicacies, some love to shop and some spend hours davening and/or say Tehillim. While one person loves nothing more than to curl up for hours with reading material, another may use that time to visit lonely hospital patients. The last thing I would suggest to someone is how to use their time, but I cannot believe that buttering a slice of bread and cutting up a vegetable is so terribly time-consuming, and if it is, perhaps waking a bit earlier would allow for some extra time. It all depends on what you would like to prioritize. Many, many parents among us have varied bus schedules and make time for breakfast. But many do not. Is this the forum for suggesting that clothing, shoes, homework, briefcases, recesses, etc., should be pre-prepared, allowing for a calmer morning? I think not. Yes, a baby may choose to throw a tantrum at that moment, the pony rubber may snap, the alarm may fail to ring and all kinds of timeconsuming scenarios may occur. No one is blaming anyone here. Time management is a skill, and, B”H, a breakfast program does exist in schools so that kinderlach with empty stomachs can be satisfied. On the other hand, since the program was initiated due to financial concerns, perhaps for many struggling families the serving of breakfast is a huge monetary bonus. R.S. P.S.: A bus driver once told me that children tend to eat their recess snacks as soon as they enter the morning bus. I wonder why? P.P.S.: French fries are served as the lunch itself? No side dishes? If this is in fact your son’s claim, I suggest you contact his cheder to verify if french fries were in fact the only food served, or if they were the only food he found appetizing while other children partook of different foods.

RE: BACKPACK SNACKS (ISSUE #132) First of all, thank you so much for such an informative publication. I really look forward to it every week. I tried the Granola Sticks recipe last week, and it was a real hit. I want to suggest to your readers some changes I made to create a more wholesome version. I used whole wheat flour and cut down on the sweeteners, using only 1 cup brown sugar and 1 cup honey. I also added ½ cup chia seeds and ½ cup wheat germ. The results were excellent. Thank you! M.S.

Your article on collecting brought to mind some “off the beaten track” collections my family has saved over the years. Several years ago, a condiment company was offering a set of books if a specific number of their food covers were saved. Same went for an ice cream company, which offered prizes for their sticks. Also, part of our quirky collections were the fake plastic credit cards issued by companies who were hoping you’d actually call them to get the real thing. Needless to say, business card collecting is still in business, and I doubt there’s a household without a stack of those cards. Let’s not forget keychain collections; rare is the souvenir store that does not have a prominent display of key chains for sale. An elderly aunt of mine proudly displays her collection of esrogim in a fruit bowl, several of which belonged to her father who was niftar 25 years ago! I knew a woman whose surname was that of an animal, and she had a ledge display exhibition of this animal in many sizes and of varied materials. Last, but far from least, my personal stationery collection is as precious to me now as it was 40-odd years ago. R.S.

I didn’t want to give it to him! I wanted it for myself!” After a few minutes of me empathizing with him about how rough it must have been to have no snack, he recovered and went on with his evening. I, on the other hand, was left pondering. Eli wanted his snack. Snack is important and delicious. But he also wanted his friendship with Aron. Aron wasn’t a bully and didn’t make him give over the snack. He requested it and my son decided to share. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that Eli was faced with two good options: A, to keep and enjoy his bag of chips, or B, to strengthen his relationship with a friend — or at the very least, not put it at risk. And I realized that my son had made a choice, and even though it didn’t feel like it, he did exactly as he wanted! The more I thought about it, the more I realized that most of the time we really do exactly as we want, even if it doesn’t seem that way. For example, if someone feels forced to visit a friend and goes anyway, even though she really isn’t in the mood, it might just mean that she values seeing herself (or having others see her) as a generous, kind person more than she values her free time. Or if someone complies with familial or societal rules even if they don’t have the same value system, that may mean that they value being accepted by a larger group more than they value their independence. In other words, even though we sometimes resent our own choices, we really do exactly what we want! Of course, this made me think about
sticking to a food plan. It made me realize that every time we are faced with temptation, we are being given two good options, and whatever we choose is a reflection of what we really want. So when I tell my sisters and sisters-inlaw that I don’t want cake at a simcha, it actually is the truth. I am well aware that cake is delicious, but I don’t want it as strongly as I want to maintain my weight! How is this helpful? Because we can only choose what we truly want when we are clear about our two choices. Meaning, if I am at a simcha and I am choosing between having cheesecake and not having cheesecake, then having cheesecake definitely wins! Of course I prefer cheesecake over no cheesecake; I am sane, after all! However, if my higher goal or value is clear in my mind, it is a completely different battle. It becomes the choice between having cheesecake and maintaining my weight! In this case, the decision is clear, and I am able to easily choose what is more valuable to me. The key is to keep your weight loss and health goals clear and focused, front and center. This way, when faced with a food-related temptation, you are able to choose what you truly value more. W hat are you doing in the produce aisle?” joked Avigayil with a wink. “And what exactly is that you’re buying?” “What I’m doing in the produce aisle is buying healthy food, and this is a kabocha squash.” Naomi laughed. “Ever since my father was niftar, I’ve been thinking about health and longevity.” “And you decided to eat more vegetables…” offered Avigayil. “Not just vegetables. I’ve transformed my entire diet, and I signed up with a personal trainer. Avigayil, my father lived to a nice old age, and in good health. I never paid much attention to my health, as you know. And where is it going? I already have high blood pressure. I had to make a change.” “That’s wonderful. Good for you. I’m so inspired,” marveled Avigayil. “Now that you mention it, you do look more fit.” “Good morning, ladies. I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation.” Naomi and Avigayil turned around to see who the stranger was. They did not recognize her. The woman continued, “Ordinarily I would never interrupt or stick my nose into someone else’s conversation, but the timing was just too perfect for me to ignore. I just came from Rebbetzin Levy’s shiur, and she discussed this very topic.” “Rebbetzin Levy spoke about nutrition?” wondered Naomi, feeling puzzled. “Well, she did mention nutrition and the mitzvah of taking care of our bodies and doing hishtadlus,” replied the woman, “but that was not the main point. The topic was longevity, and the main point she wanted to bring across was a Sforno on this week’s parsha.” “Go on,” encouraged Avigayil, “please share it with us.” “Well, it says in this week’s parsha to honor your father and your mother, so that your days will be lengthened.” Naomi and Avigayil looked at each other,

and Naomi responded, “Yes, we both know that kibud av v’em ensures a long life. Thank you for reminding us, though; it never hurts to be reminded.” “Wait,” the woman said. “The Sforno says more on this pasuk. This promise of a long life doesn’t just come after the mitzvah of kibud av v’em, the fifth of the Aseres Hadibros, which means it comes after the first five of the Aseres Hadibros. Apparently, the Sforno says that all five of these mitzvos come with the promise of long life.” “Really?” said Avigayil. “I never knew that.” “Really. Well, the Sforno also holds that this long life is in Olam Haba, which is amazing. But there are opinions that this reference to lengthened days refers to both this world and the next.” “Hmm. You know what?” said Naomi. “I think I’ll call my mother right now and ask if there’s anything I can get for her while I’m here.” “Me too,” replied Avigayil, pulling out her phone. “You know what?” smiled the lady. “That’s not a bad idea at all. I think I’ll do the same.” The Sforno explains that by performing the first five of the Aseres Hadibros, a person renders honor to Hashem Himself. The result is that the person becomes part of Hashem’s eternal life. The Sforno explains what this entails. It entails knowing that Hashem created the world out of nothing. It entails accepting Hashem as the only divinity and worshiping nothing else. It entails not rebelling against Hashem in our actions, thoughts or speech. And it entails actively honoring Hashem. The Sforno’s conclusion sums it all up: We must honor Hashem because he is our Father, and after all, are we not commanded to honor our mortal parents? May we show honor to Hashem in all our ways.

omething was very wrong with my son Mendy, but I couldn’t put my finger on it. When he turned one, Mendy was not smiling or responding to his name. He didn’t see or hear what was going on; he seemed to be in his own world. I started fearing the worst. By the time Mendy was two, I knew that he had autism. My perfect child was not going to have the “perfect” life I had hoped for and envisioned. The very ground we stood on seemed to be crumbling under our feet. THE JOURNEY toward acceptance has been humbling and transformational. Accepting that my own child has autism was very difficult. It involved allowing myself to grieve more deeply than I’ve ever grieved before. I felt as if I had to close the door on my hopes for a good life for my baby. It seemed like I had failed before I even had the chance to start as a parent. My husband and I threw ourselves into advocating for our son, sourcing the “right” therapists, “right” methods and “right” interventions, yet feeling that everything was just so “wrong.” Everywhere we turned we were met with incredibly long waiting lists: for assessments, for school placements and for any sort of answer, leaving us feeling like we were languishing in purgatory as our son retreated further and further away from us. Mendy was initially a very happy and independent child who did not seem to need anything from anyone. He almost never cried and could spend the whole day entertaining himself. He would laugh to himself over secret jokes and was mostly oblivious to whoever was around. Desperate for a solution, we tried many interventions, starting with the most evidence-based methods. We started him on occupational therapy so he would learn to be more “compliant.” He went for speech therapy, where he practiced blowing, chewing and making sounds. His physical therapist worked on his poor balance and gross motor skills. When he was three years old, a teacher came to work with Mendy for three hours a day, getting him to name flash cards and repeat words. When Mendy was not focusing, he was running around, jumping or engaging in self-stimulating behaviors. The teacher would tell him to stop, repeatedly. If he cried, which he invariably did, the teacher would withhold incentives. He would whine and complain wordlessly each day. He would bang his head on the floor and bite his hands constantly in frustration and anger. When he joined a class, his days were spent in time-out because he hurt his classmates and couldn’t be around them. After a year of religiously adhering to his strict schedule, we had nothing to show for it. Nothing had worked. My happy, though disconnected, little boy turned into a rigid, stressed out and miserable child. He would cry and cry, not understanding why everyone was constantly preventing him from doing what he enjoyed or felt he needed to do to cope with whatever was around him. All the behavioral approaches that involved teaching our child to stop all the socially unacceptable things he loved doing, and getting him to comply and demonstrate acceptable behaviors on demand, took us down a blackhole into a world of misery.

How does this method differ from other methods?
We knew we had to find a better method or we would lose him. Flying in the face of conventional wisdom and years of evidence-based knowledge felt terrifying, but I knew that I had to try for the sake of my child. After many trials that led to dead ends, we finally stumbled upon a novel approach that did not involve changing behaviors, but instead was aimed at working on his weak social, communication and relational muscles through play. This was a method called The Son-Rise Program®. This innovative program looks at autism differently. Instead of seeing it as a neurobehavioral problem, it sees autism as a social-relational disorder. Far from being a question of semantics, this different perspective means that those repetitive, exclusive and socially unacceptable behaviors are no longer our enemy. They instead become our way to enter our child’s world. Through joining his behaviors, we send him the message that we love and accept him just the way he is, and that we want to do whatever he does just because he loves it. Many well-intentioned friends were worried that we were reinforcing his stims, but what happened instead was that the more we joined him, the less he needed to do those things. He started to look at us, perhaps initially out of curiosity as to why Mommy was not stopping him anymore, but was instead doing the same thing, and then eventually out of delight over shared enjoyment. He started to trust us again, and that was the first step toward building a relationship with him. We — his parents and staff — entered his world by joining in his repetitive behaviors with an attitude of love and acceptance. We no longer judged Mendy or tried to change him. Then the magic began. Within a few weeks, he started showing an interest in the people around him. His head banging and biting stopped. He learned how to play and have fun with his family and staff. It has been one year since we started using The Son-Rise Program®, and we have seen so many breakthroughs that we dare to hope and dream for our son once again. Mendy has started speaking, and his vocabulary is increasing daily. He can now play and have fun with his siblings and friends and enjoys games like tag and storytelling. Mendy has become flexible and easygoing. He is incredibly affectionate, and not only with his family members, but also with his entire Son-Rise® team. His poor balance and gross motor skills have also greatly improved. Mendy is not the same child that he was a year ago. Now he is part of the goings-on around him. He is an active participant at the Shabbos table, runs to check who is at the door when someone knocks, makes clear what his likes and dislikes are and shows emotions and feelings! The Son-Rise Program® has not only given us back our hope, but it has taught us to parent our son with love and respect.
Most people look at the situation by saying, “How can I fix my child? How can I change him?” When we walk into The Son-Rise Program® room, on the other hand, we come in with an attitude of “How can I connect with this child and love this child more?”
How does this affect the outcome? The child does not feel threatened by the staff. He feels comfortable to just be himself. Automatically, the child is calmer and less stressed, and therefore he is able to come out of his comfort zone and join the world and connect with others and learn.
Who would benefit from The Son-Rise Program®? Any child with social, behavioral or sensory issues, whether it is a regular child with a few issues, or a child with autism.
Who are The Son-Rise Program® facilitators? Ideally, the parents should be the ones in charge of the child’s programs. But they shouldn’t be running it on their own; they should have hired help or volunteers helping them with the program. Therefore, we have set up The Playroom, a SonRise Program® Center, where children can spend their days and then follow up with home teams in the evenings.
For whom would you recommend The Son-Rise Program® Start-Up course? The course will take place from April 23 through April 27. It will be given by professional Son-Rise Program® teachers from the Option Institute®. This course is recommended for any parents with children who can benefit from The Son-Rise Program®, as well as therapists, special education teachers and anyone else who would like to work with an autistic child.

Seizing Miraculous Moments So Small, So Great Based on a lecture by Rabbi Chaim Rosenfeld
A
After David and Shimon had gotten together one morning, they both headed back to their cars and began driving behind each other down New York State Route 42. Not too long after entering the state highway, David noticed a middle-aged man standing off to the side of the road. He seemed to be collecting tzedakah for a certain cause and was in need of a ride somewhere. But before David knew it, he was already too far past the man and he decided to continue driving. Looking back in his rearview mirror, David hoped that Shimon would notice the man and offer him a lift. Sure enough, Shimon stopped off by the side of the road, and the man, who introduced himself as Zev, climbed into the car. Shimon, now sitting together with his guest passenger, was pleased to be of help. He figured that he would drive Zev for a couple of miles to his destination and continue from there. But just a few minutes into the drive, Zev began to have shortness of breath. “I don’t feel too good; I’m having chest pains.” Worried about Zev’s health, Shimon immediately pulled over and phoned Hatzolah. Shimon relayed the current situation and their location, and within minutes, Hatzolah arrived and rushed over to check on Zev. Providing him with oxygen, they proceeded to load him into the ambulance and rush him to the hospital. And sure enough, after a quick examination, the doctors determined that he had suffered

a heart attack. “If you would have waited a little bit longer,” the doctor told Shimon, “he might not have made it. You saved his life.” When Shimon heard this news, he couldn’t believe it. In no way was he expecting to save someone’s life that day as he drove down the highway. A few hours later, Shimon asked the nurse if it would be okay to visit Zev, who was now stabilized and resting in bed. Being granted permission, Shimon gently knocked on the door and entered. “How are you feeling?” Shimon asked. “Baruch Hashem, much better,” said Zev. “My only concern is that I will be unable to continue traveling around and raising funds. Maybe the reason I had this heart attack is because I am under a lot of stress. I have a big family and my daughter just recently got engaged. The problem is that I lost my job and have no means to support my family, let alone pay for the wedding. My goal was to raise $20,000, but it doesn’t seem like that will happen any longer.” As Shimon listened to Zev’s stressful predicament, he wondered if there was something he could do. “Just give me a few minutes,” he told Zev. “Let me see what I can come up with.” Shimon proceeded to walk to the room next door and take out his cellphone. And then he got to work. Calling a number of his business contacts, he told each of them the same thing. “I just met a man from Israel who lost his job, needs to support his large family, pay for his upcoming daughter’s wedding and just now suffered
a heart attack. Would you be able to give him a hand?” Within an hour, Shimon had raised $20,000. Heading back over to Zev’s room, Shimon reassured him. “Zev, you have nothing to worry about. Baruch Hashem, your heart is fine and you are on your way to recovery. And neither should you worry about raising $20,000. I took care of it all and you are set. I just made a few phone calls, and you can expect the $20,000 by tomorrow.” Zev could not believe his ears. “I never thought I would meet Eliyahu Hanavi, but I guess I just did.” Guaranteeing Zev that everything was taken care of and it was his absolute pleasure to perform an act of chesed, Shimon asked Zev to please stay in touch with him. And with that, Shimon headed off home. Later that night, Shimon decided he would make one more call. It had been a long and busy day, but he knew that he needed to speak with someone. And that someone was David. “David,” said Shimon over the phone, “you won’t believe what happened today! Do you remember the man you passed by this morning on the highway?” “Yeah,” replied David. “Well, I picked him up.” “I know that,” interrupted David, “I saw you pick him up.” “No, you don’t understand,” said Shimon. “Just a few minutes into the ride, he had a heart attack and needed to be rushed to the hospital. Baruch Hashem, he got there in time and survived. The doctor told me that he almost didn’t make it.” “That’s amazing!” said Shimon. “You’re like Eliyahu Hanavi.” “But that’s not all,” continued Shimon. “The man then told me that he had come to America to collect money because he had just lost his job and he needed to support his family and pay for his upcoming daughter’s wedding. When I heard this, I immediately called some of my business associates and asked if they could help him. Within an hour, I raised the $20,000 he needed.” When David heard this, he was even more taken aback. “You really helped this man out. What a tremen-
dous zechus you have!” As David hung up the phone and thought about what he had just heard, it suddenly hit him. His mind began to picture how after a hundred and twenty years he would come before Hashem. “So, David, did you ever save someone’s life?” “No.” “Did you ever help someone make a wedding?” “No.” And then Hashem would inform him of what could have been. “You had the opportunity to both save someone’s life and help them pay for their child’s wedding. Do you remember that day when you passed by that man on the side of the road? Had you picked him up, you could have changed the life of a fellow Jew, his family and generations to come.” David could just imagine that now Zev would continue living a healthy life and accomplishing extraordinary things. And his family, as well, would be able to live comfortably. And his daughter, too — she would go on to build a wonderful family and raise Jewish children with beautiful Torah ideals. David could have taken the first step to helping a family, which would have in turn likely led to helping a community, and perhaps at some point, the world. What an opportunity he had skipped over and Shimon had seized. In life, oftentimes the difference between changing nothing and changing the world is a moment. It all boils down to that one opportunity that seems so small, yet in truth is so great. All we must do is make sure we do not skip over those miraculous moments. Because quite literally, they can make all the difference in the world.

Leonia Bans GPS GWB Shortcuts CAN A TOWNSHIP BAN non-resident drivers from using its side streets as shortcuts? Leonia, New Jersey, certainly hopes so. CBS News reported that residents of Leonia, which is adjacent to the George Washington Bridge, have found their side streets clogged with non-residents whose navigation systems send them on local roads in an effort to get them to the bridge faster. An ordinance banning non-locals from side streets went into effect on January 22. Leonia residents will receive yellow stickers that will allow them to use side streets while all other
drivers will be restricted from those areas from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., seven days a week. Violators could face fines of up to $200. Mayor Judah Zeigler noted that he knows it may be an uphill challenge getting drivers to comply with the new restrictions. “There’s no doubt it’s going to take some education and some time,” said Zeigler.
Ullman Leaves Town Board for New Position as Ramapo Tax Collector MONSEY RESIDENT and long-time town board member Yitzy Ullman will be moving on to a new position at the Ramapo Town Hall, taking over as receiver of taxes. Nathan Oberman, now 88, has been the official tax collector in the Town of Ramapo for 21 years, but he recently submitted his retirement
papers, citing health and personal issues. Ullman said that when he heard that the position was about to be vacated, he jumped at the chance to take over for Oberman, reported The Journal News. Oberman will be remain in town hall for several months to ease the transition and to finish up this year’s
tax collection. He received a standing ovation from the town board after announcing his resignation, telling them, “It’s been a wonderful time.” Ullman pledged to computerize the town’s tax collection system in an effort to shorten lines for those who choose to pay their tax bills in person at town hall.
Interim Replacement Named After Passing of Long-Time Monsey Rav Hamachshir JUST OVER ONE WEEK after the sudden passing of a well-known fixture in the world of kashrus and the supervising rav hamachshir at multiple Monsey establishments, comes word that a replacement has been named to take over his duties in the short term. Rabbi Zushe Yosef Blech z”l was niftar unexpectedly in Baltimore on January 19. A former Monsey resident who relocated to Florida in recent years, Rabbi Blech was the founder and chief rabbinic authority of Bais

His passing left a void in the world of kashrus and many local businesses in a quandary. “We are all very shaken,” said Rabbi Moshe Elefant, chief operating officer at the Orthodox Union who worked with Rabbi Blech for many years. “We are all just trying to come to terms with a world without Rabbi Zushe Blech.” Rabbi Binyomin Taub, kashrus coordinator for the Rabbinical Council of Bergen County, will be stepping in
temporarily to take over Rabbi Blech’s duties and will be available to answer sheilos posed by Bais Benzion Kashrus’ team of expert mashgichim until more definitive arrangements can be made. Rabbi Blech received his semicha from Rabbi Yaakov Yitzchok Ruderman z”l. A well-known author and lecturer as well as an expert on biotechnology and enzymology, Rabbi Blech served as a technical and halachic consultant to multiple kashrus agencies throughout his decades-long career.

ORANGE CHICKEN This chicken takes seconds to prepare and is extremely kid-friendly. Serve it alongside rice and cooked broccoli for a well-balanced meal.
INGREDIENTS: 4 chicken breasts, cut into cubes ¾ cup bottled barbecue sauce ¾ cup orange marmalade 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
DIRECTIONS: 1. Place chicken cubes into slow cooker on medium setting for about 1½ hours. Chicken will release its own juices. 2. Drain the chicken juice from the slow cooker and add barbecue sauce, orange marmalade and soy sauce. Cook for an additional 2 hours. The sauce will thicken as it cools. 3. Sprinkle sesame seeds before serving.

HAWAIIAN SHREDDED CHICKEN I have never been disappointed by the way this chicken turns out; it is just about fail-proof. The combination of sweet, salty and tangy really hits the spot.
INGREDIENTS: 4 chicken breasts 1 bottle Hawaiian barbecue sauce 1 can crushed pineapple
DIRECTIONS: 1. Place chicken, sauce and pineapple into Crock-Pot and cook on low for 4–6 hours. 2. Shred the chicken while it is still in the slow cooker. It should shred easily. 3. Serve over rice.

ALL-IN-ONE SUPPER This is a fantastic supper: protein, starch and vegetables all in one. The vegetables included here are my favorites, but you can customize to your family’s liking. If you use green beans, it is best to add them about 30 minutes before serving.
INGREDIENTS: 6 chicken bottoms 1 pound baby red potatoes, halved 1 bag baby carrots 1 pound green beans ½ cup soy sauce ½ cup honey ¼ cup ketchup 2 cloves crushed garlic 1 tsp. dried basil ½ tsp. oregano ¼ tsp. red pepper flakes
DIRECTIONS: 1. Place chicken and vegetables on the bottom of slow cooker. 2. Combine all sauce ingredients and add to slow cooker. 3. Cook on low for 6–8 hours.

HOW OFTEN DOES A MEZUZAH HAVE TO BE CHECKED? Mezuzos should be checked twice during every seven-year period, i.e. approximately every three to four years. ARE THERE ANY CASES WHERE THE MEZUZOS HAVE TO BE CHECKED MORE FREQUENTLY? It is recommendable to have any outdoor mezuzah that is exposed to extreme elements (like direct sunlight or soaking rain) checked out more often. HOW LONG CAN A NEW HOME BE WITHOUT A MEZUZAH? When moving, if you are renting, you have up to 30 days to put up mezuzos. If you own your home, mezuzos are required immediately upon moving in.

ARE TENANTS ALLOWED TO TAKE THEIR MEZUZOS WITH THEM WHEN MOVING TO A NEW APARTMENT, OR DO THEY HAVE TO LEAVE IT FOR THE NEXT TENANT? No, one may not remove mezuzos when moving. (There are some exceptions, such as if you know for sure that renovations, painting, etc. will be done or if a non-Jew will be moving in after you leave. It’s recommended to consult with a rav on these matters.) It is important to know, though, that the mezuzos one leaves over do not automatically become the possession of the second tenant or owner, unless they were clearly given as a gift or included in the sale contract. Otherwise, the current tenant or owner is obligated to return or pay for them. The mezuzos belong to the original owner.

WHAT ARE SOME HALACHOS PERTAINING TO MEZUZAH THAT PEOPLE ARE UNAWARE OF? It is important to remember that every room (with a few exceptions) that has an area of 36 square feet requires a mezuzah. Also, make sure to point out to your sofer which mezuzos will be used outdoors, as they require special wrapping and sealing to protect them from the weather. As an aside, many men are not aware that keeping their tefillin in a vehicle (especially during the summer months or in extremely cold weather) can cause irreversible damage to the parshios inside.

I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE a couple of stories in order to give your readers a greater appreciation of the importance of having their mezuzos checked periodically. Having a kosher mezuzah on every doorpost, besides for it being in and of itself a mitzvah, has tremendous Divine power to protect the home and the people who dwell in it. But in order for it to have that power, it must be 100 percent kosher. If it is only 99 percent kosher, it is totally pasul and invalid! A number of years ago, upon doing a mezuzah house call for a local family, an exterior mezuzah was found to have multiple holes in the first words — Shema Yisroel. Apparently, a construction worker had reaffixed the mezuzah by placing a nail into the case, thereby (unknowingly) puncturing the klaf and rendering it pasul! When I informed the owners of what was found, they revealed that their newly born baby was born with a... hole in the heart! More recently, a prominent member of the Monsey community, in need of a certain yeshuah, called us to do a mezuzah house call. All the mezuzos (and there were many) were found to be in perfect condition. There were absolutely no mistakes and no corrections required. He was a bit surprised. About a week later, this family, baruch Hashem, experienced their long-awaited yeshuah. The father approached me one day and said, “I guess it doesn’t mean that a problem must be found in a mezuzah [in order to receive help from Above]; it seems that in the zechus of doing the right thing, by doing our regular mezuzah check-up, we merited such a swift yeshuah!” Thank you for giving me this opportunity, and I hope this will help our community do this special mitzvah right.

IN THE SUMMER OF 1983, I was lucky to be able to carve out a few days for a much-needed vacation with my husband. We set our sights on scenic New Hampshire and planned a sedentary itinerary with lots of relaxation in the crisp mountain air that would include some nature strolls and perhaps a visit to a mansion or two. The drive up was pleasant enough. The first few hours passed by as swiftly as the breeze rushing past the window. When we turned onto the I-91 N for what would be the longest stretch of the journey, I folded up the cumbersome map and allowed myself to be lulled to sleep by the hum of the motor. I jerked awake when I felt the car slow down and then come to a stop. Blinking the sunlight out of my eyes, I tried to figure out where we were and took in the quaint shops lining the boulevard. My husband heard me shift in my seat and turned my way. “Welcome to New Hampshire,” he said in a proper voice, making me smile wide. “You woke up just in time. Would you like to join me for a few minutes?” I nodded and unbuckled my seatbelt. We stepped out of the car, and I followed him into a small shop that boasted a sign on its window advertising antiques. I should not have been surprised that some business would be involved in this for-pleasure-only trip. My
husband was in the jewelry line, and antique shops held great attraction for him. The glass door opened to the symphony of tinkling chimes and bells, and before our eyes we found a stereotypical second-hand shop. Dusty bookshelves and breakfronts crowded up the room next to tables full of bowls, candlesticks and other random antiques. Those things held little interest for us, and we walked straight to the shopkeeper, a wiry gentleman with leathery skin and a near-translucent, sparse beard. While I fingered a Tiffany lamp lying on a nearby cracked pedestal, my husband approached him. He seemed an affable enough fellow. “Do you happen to have any pieces of jewelry?” my husband inquired. “Nah, I don’t deal with jewelry at all,” the shopkeeper said. We turned to leave, but the proprietor emitted a low rumble from his throat in an effort to gain our attention. “Hmmph. I just might have something that would interest you. You must be Jewish, are you not?” Without waiting for a reply, he opened a glass display, moved aside a crystal decanter and reached for a small bronze rectangle. My husband stuck his hand out for it, and I watched him peer at it, turning it this way and that

in wonder. He then slid a thin, white tube out of it. “A real mezuzah,” he whispered in awe. The mezuzah holder was ornately carved, though its bronze was badly tarnished. The mezuzah itself seemed to be in great condition. We exchanged some hushed words, trying to gauge how much to offer him for it. Leaving it there was obviously not an option. “I’ll give him eighteen dollars. I think he’ll let us have it.” “Nah, let’s offer fifteen.” The shopkeeper agreed to the offered price. It didn’t seem like he’d had too great hopes for it. The money was given over. Hands were shaken. And a bronze mezuzah holder was reverently led out of the shop by its new owners. I have little recollection of what we did in New Hampshire over the following few days. What I do remember is that upon our arrival back home in Monsey, the first thing that was removed from our luggage was our newly acquired mezuzah. Our teenage son, Motty, then a student in Nitra yeshivah, admired the mezuzah from up close, devouring the story of how it landed in our possession. “I would love to take it to yeshivah with me,” he exclaimed, excitement in his eyes. “I have a maggid shiur who is a sofer. I think he would appreciate seeing it.” I looked at my husband, noticing his indecisive stance. Would he allow this possibly valuable, likely historical mezuzah out of his sight and into the hands of a young bachur? Yet he couldn’t deny his son this pleasure. “Of course you can take it. You’ll guard over it as best as you possibly can, won’t you?” THE SCREEN DOOR banged shut, and footsteps thundered across the hall floor. Motty barged into the kitchen, hat nearly squashed in his grip. “You wouldn’t believe what my maggid shiur told me when he saw the mezuzah holder.” The maggid shiur, an elderly gentleman who’d survived the Holocaust as a young man, had been a master sofer still in Europe. He was real mumcha in identifying the style of many sofrim. And so Motty reported that the maggid shiur had been tear-struck when he slipped the mezuzah out of its holder and examined it. In a trembling voice, he told my son that this very mezuzah, in this bronze case, had been affixed to the doorpost of the shul where he had davened as a child and young adult. We will never know of the mezuzah’s journey, how it crossed the ocean and landed in a forsaken little shop in New Hampshire. We can only tell the tale of how this mezuzah was reunited with someone from its past, who had kissed it fervently weekly — most poignantly as he stepped into shul the week of his aufruf.
Since this story took place over 30 years ago, some forgotten details were reconstructed.

THE YEAR WAS 1957, AND J. EDGAR HOOVER, DIRECTOR of the FBI, was about to have his socks knocked off. Despite years of protesting that organized crime did not exist in America, he was about to be publically proven wrong. The Mafia was about to be exposed. It was in the sleepy town of Apalachin, New York, where police officers stumbled upon a summer home surrounded by black limousines and filled with expensively besuited men. Large parties of this sort were a rarity in this locale, and as soon as the squad car was sighted, dozens of panicked mobsters fled the summer home and headed for protection in the nearby woods and fields. By evening, 58 men had been detained. Hailing from all over America — from the Tristate area to California, Texas, Illinois and elsewhere — these mafiosos were the cream of the crop of organized crime. As independent leaders of the major crime families, they’d all come together in what became known as the Apalachin Summit to choose a new capo di tutti capi — boss of all bosses — the ultimate head of the Italian “family” in America. The media had a heyday broadcasting the news of the clearly identified Mafia presence, but despite the publicity, the mobsters had broken no laws by meeting and could not be convicted. The incident did serve, however, to ignite the desire of the masses to bring down the powerful crime syndicate. For years, mob presence in New York, especially, had been clearly felt by laborers and

business owners. In order to succeed in business and be safe from “mishaps,” many types of companies had to “partner” with the mob by paying protection fees. From the Fulton Fish Market to manufacturers of clothing, no one was immune. To make matters worse, many law enforcement agents were in cahoots with La Cosa Nostra — as the Italian Mafia calls itself — and major federal organizations like Hoover’s FBI (intentionally?) overlooked the existence and activities of the five major Italian crime families. Robert F. Kennedy, brother to future president John F. Kennedy, raised the cry for a national organization to spearhead the campaign against the mob. Hoover was reluctant to allow him any power in mob investigations, so it wasn’t until John F. Kennedy was elected to presidency that Robert got his chance. With his brother appointing him as Attorney General, doors began to open. Turning the already existing Justice

Department’s Organized Crime and Racketeering Section (OCRS) specifically into a Mafia-investigation division, Kennedy began recruiting daring individuals to join him in the battle to bring down the mob.
Omertà One of the agents hired by Kennedy was Gerald Shur, a Jewish man who’d grown up in New York and had repeatedly observed the mob’s presence around town. Watching his father carefully maneuver business in a Mafia-controlled environment and hearing stories of those who’d suffered for refusal to cooperate instilled a deep hatred of the mob in Gerald. As a child, he’d kept a scrapbook of news clippings following Mafia activities, hoping one day to be able to have a share in purging the world of this ugly stain on the fabric of mankind. Once hired as a member
of the OCRS, he was given opportunity to do that. There was just one problem: omertà. Omertà is the Mafia’s code of silence, binding any “family member” to a pact of secrecy in regard to mob activities. No member of the crime family ever dreamed of cooperating with the authorities; the stakes were just too high. Any mafioso found guilty of breaking omertà knew that his time was limited and could expect to meet an extremely bitter and gruesome fate. For this reason, the pact of silence was never broached for many years, leaving the workings of the mob a mystery in the minds of Americans. The long arm of the mob was too powerful a force to convince anyone with ties to La Cosa Nostra to testify against them. And then Joseph Valachi, a longterm member of the mob, agreed to break omertà in exchange for protection from Mafia retaliation. After testifying, he was shuttled off

to a private island under heavy guard where he planned to live out his imprisonment for narcotics violations. Though Valachi’s testimony did not land anyone in jail, it did shed light on the mechanics of the La Cosa Nostra that outsiders had never heard of, as well as resulting in a list of over 300 identified Mafia members. All of a sudden, the mob was real. And that was terrifying. But with that terror came comfort. No one had ever escaped the wrath of the mob until Valachi was successfully hidden and protected by government forces. Joseph Valachi died of natural causes in 1971 with an unfulfilled mob-offered bounty of $100,000 on his head. All of a sudden, former mafiosos who’d become disenchanted or had fallen out of favor became more willing to break the code of silence, as the promise of protection was enough to convince them that squealing on The Family just might be worth it…
A Controversial Program By the mid-1960s, Gerald Shur had successfully solved the question of how to protect these defectors of the mob. He’d create for them new identities, expunge their past records (in many cases), and give them the chance to start over on new turf. The Federal Witness Protection Program, also known as WITSEC (Witness Security), was born. By providing witnesses of violent crime with new names, Social Security numbers and personal histories, he hoped to throw off their pursuers and possibly even rehabilitate former criminals into law-abiding folk. In many instances, those who were enrolled in the program did become more or less law-abiding, but in a handful of others, the lack of criminal activity proved too boring, and they resorted to crime once again. For this reason, there was opposition in the government regarding WITSEC. While, on the one hand, the government finally had access to top-quality information that could land even the biggest of fish behind bars, it came with the tradeoff that potentially — and often previously — dangerous mobsters were being quietly released throughout America. (Already convicted felons who enroll in the program are given extra security precautions in prison and are not typically released.) Roughly 95 percent of participants enrolled in WITSEC are criminals. Despite these high numbers, only roughly 17 percent of WITSEC participants return to crime as compared to the almost 41 percent of those who are released under their own identities on parole. What’s more is that although La Cosa Nostra has not yet gone the way of the dodo, its influence is significantly dampened, and tremendous fear has been lifted from the masses.

A New Way of Life For some, their induction into WITSEC is a thoughtout process, involving the witness reaching out to the U.S. Marshalls who run the program, requesting security in exchange for information. For others, the decision to join the program takes place in a matter of minutes when Marshalls swoop in and warn important witnesses of potential danger, offering to take them away to a place of safety. Loved ones, too, are taken into the program and given new identities to prevent retaliation against the witness’s spouse and children. Extended family and friends, however, are not typically allowed to be contacted, though letters and phone conversations can sometimes be arranged. Participating in WITSEC means separating oneself from one’s identity and past to start completely anew. After being taken under protection, participants and their families are hosted in government-run safe houses, which are bomb-proof and kept under heavy surveillance. During their time in the safe house, families and individuals practice acclimating into their new identities until it becomes second nature. Much effort is invested in preventing slip-ups from happening and covers from being blown. Even just the exercise of writing the new name can go on for hours and days.
Though nearly everything is new for WITSEC participants, the Marshalls are adamant that certain histories actually do follow the participants, such as children’s school grades. Despite new names, the true grades a child has earned are reported on the falsified report. Same too when it comes to fiscal matters.Though WITSEC provides funding for housing, transportation, clothing and other basic necessities the witnesses will need in starting their new lives, WITSEC will not falsify credit records or the like. WITSEC is about protecting those who hold vital information — not setting them up with the ability to engage in further crime schemes. Once all new documentation is obtained and the Marshalls are confident that those enrolled in the program are comfortable enough in their new identities, relocation happens. Witnesses do not get to choose their favorite destination as the place they’ll live, as they may have mentioned enchantment with that locale in previous conversation with someone from their past. Instead, WITSEC gives them several choices and allows them to choose where they’d like to be relocated to. Monthly stipends are provided until adequate employment is found, after which funding is phased out. Safety is of utmost concern, and in the instance that details of the witnesses’ history are leaked, the Marshalls are trained to evacuate and relocate the participants in short order. It only takes one shred of information for puzzles to be pieced together, secrets to be unearthed and lives to be destroyed; WITSEC will not take that chance. Since the program was officially founded in 1971, 8,600 witnesses and 9,900 of their family members have been protected by WITSEC. Of those who have scrupulously kept to the rules of the program, not one member has been harmed or eliminated by those they have testified against. Though many witnesses and their families acclimate well, some find the separation from their past extremely difficult. With enrollment in the Witness Protection Program being completely voluntary, if a participant chooses to revert to his previous identity and leave the program, he may, though he is strongly discouraged from doing so. Of those who have left, many have not lived to tell the tale.
The Best Protection While we pray to never be haunted by fears of dangerous pursuants and never need a program such as WITSEC, we’d be wise to recognize that a plethora of dangers do exist in this world. Fortunate for us, we are under the guard of Shomer Yisroel, who neither slumbers nor sleeps. And so too, our mezuzos provide a tremendous measure of security. WHEN I LEAVE MY HOME AT NIGHT IT’S USUALLY UNLOCKED
WONDERING HOW YOU COMPARE WITH THE GENERAL U.S. POPULATION? According to a government poll conducted this past September among 1,000 U.S. adults, only seven percent of Americans don’t lock the doors behind them when they leave their home. Among those more likely to leave their doors unlocked are those living in rural areas over city dwellers, senior citizens over younger adults and Republicans over citizens with other political leanings. It may come as as a surprise that more than three-quarters of our nation’s adults lock their doors also when at home (though it is not surprising that women are way more likely to do so than men). And then there are much greater security measures that home dwellers take to prevent break-ins. Ranging from security alarms and cameras to high-tech gadgets, there’s a huge market to provide your home with utmost protection. But all that pales in comparison to the the fortified, uber-secure homes in the world, whose affluent and influential owners take extreme measures to fortify their homes and protect their assets. This article explores five of them.

1 THE CORBI FAMILY’S HOME IN LOS ANGELES The shoemaker’s son may go barefoot, as the popular saying goes, but the same does not hold true for Al Corbi of Strategically Armored and Fortified Environments (SAFE) who installed the greatest of security measures to protect his hilltop mansion in Los Angeles, California. Despite the biometric recognition software that has rendered pocket keys unnecessary on his estate, the steel-reinforced concrete for protection against earthquakes and the sensors that sound an alarm when detecting a trespasser as far as a half a mile away, the family sleeps inside a 2,500-square-foot bulletproof panic suite, which Corbi refers to as a “safe core,” whose doors are outfitted with vault-like locking systems.
2 THE BUCKINGHAM PALACE IN LONDON Home to the Queen of England, there’s good reason for this 775-room royal home to appear on this list. It is guarded all the time by British army soldiers posted on the inside and outside of the palace, on foot and on horseback. This requires a great deal of manpower, what with the palace’s 1,514 doors and 760 windows! There are panic rooms made of thick layers of steel throughout the palace to protect the royal family in the event of danger. It is said, though, that Prince Philip feels the security measures are overdone and will refuse to make use of the panic room in an event of emergency.

THE WHITE HOUSE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. He may not be a king or queen, but the home of the most important person in our country at any given time sure gets its fair share of security measures. That protection includes iron fences around the property’s perimeter armed with alarms and sensors to detect any intruders — apparatuses that are also installed on the home itself. A team of snipers is on the rooftop, and armed agents and guards patrol the entire premises, some uniformed and others undercover. One of the main jobs of the Secret Service is to protect the first family, as well as other important government officials, and there are approximately 4,400 officers who guard the White House, Treasury building and foreign diplomatic missions in Washington.

4 FAIR FIELD ESTATE IN THE HAMPTONS, NY Just about two hours away from Monsey sits what at one point enjoyed the fame as the largest and most valuable home in the United States. In December 2017, the much-talked-about tax reform passed both the House and the Senate, and the president signed it into law, effectively reforming many different areas of the tax code. This tax reform has generated much confusion and has been a hot topic of conversation. People are interested in how this will affect them, moving forward, and if any action should be taken on their behalf to utilize the reform to their benefit. Over the next few weeks, we will attempt to simplify and explain some of the more pertinent reforms in a questionand-answer format. Q: There is a lot of recent talk about contributing money to a 529 college savings plan. What is a 529 plan? What has changed to make it more attractive as a tax strategy? Should I open a 529 account?

NEW LAW: Under the new tax law, Section 529 plans would not only permit payment of college expenses, but would be expanded to include K-12 private school tuition expenses. Thus, if you withdraw the money to pay for your child’s K-12 tuition expenses, that is now a qualified distribution and you would not be required to pay the tax on the accumulated earnings. Many people have contributed to a 529 plan and have withdrawn the money a week later to pay yeshivah and school tuition, and they will now be taking a deduction on their NYS tax return.

BACKGROUND: Passed in 1996 to incentivize college education, section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code was introduced and enacted to provide tax relief to those with college expenses. Congress allowed people to contribute to a state-administered plan where the funds would be deposited with an investment firm. Participants would not pay tax on the accumulated earnings if they were withdrawn for higher education expenses. Historically, this has been very attractive for parents looking for a long-term savings plan for their child’s college education. Although from a federal perspective there is no tax benefit on the initial contribution to a 529 plan, many states do have in place a tax deduction on contributions. For example, NYS grants a deduction of up to $10,000

FINAL THOUGHTS: Although seemingly allowed under the new law, the above quick turnaround was never the intended use of the NYS 529 deduction, and according to some estimates, this has the potential to cost NYS approximately 300 million dollars. As a result, other
states that currently offer 529 deductions are now considering legislative action over the coming year to adjust their 529 deduction allowances. As it pertains to new contributions in 2018, it would therefore be wise to take a wait-and-see approach, as potential changes from the state may affect your plan contribution. EACH PUZZLE PIECE WILL FIND ITS PLACE AS SOON AS YEHUDAH mentioned the name of his business, I immediately recognized it. It was a well-known, successful local company — as far as I knew — which really wasn’t the inside story. Though his business provided a great service, there was a large market for his offering and healthy competition. And somehow he felt that it was always a problem to find the right people to do things, and much of the work ended up falling right back onto his plate instead of on the people whom he had hired to do these things. Yehudah had heard about my services from an employee who had come for testing, and he was intrigued about how he could use aptitude testing to match people up with their jobs. The employee that had reached out to me had done so because he knew that he had excellent skills

dah, did not want to lose a valuable employee and was intrigued at the ability to match people to their jobs better. He reacted by picking up the phone to hear more about what I do. Kudos to him for reaching out for help instead of getting upset at his employee. Once Yehudah understood more about what my service offered, he decided to pay to have all his top employees tested to ensure that each person was in the right job and that their skills were being utilized. It made sense to him that employees who are happy would stay at their jobs and perform a lot better than people who are in poorly fitting po-

Not to mention caring, too. Once the results were in, each employee scheduled a personal review. In the meantime, I spent time understanding what Yehudah’s personal and business goals were so that this exercise would be useful to him as an individual, as a business owner and to the entire organization as a complete unit. The last, and hardest, thing to convince him of was to take testing himself. He easily saw why his employees needed it, but didn’t think that those same reasons applied to him. After all, he knew what he enjoyed, he had opened this business because it was something that he was both passionate about and good at. Quite honestly, Yehudah admitted, he was nervous that seeing his results would cause him to change the way he worked. He believed that “what you don’t know can’t hurt you.” The problem is that it can, and it was, every day. Self-awareness is usually beneficial, unless the person is not ready to deal with the truth. We agreed to wait and see. He decided that once he saw his employees go through testing, he would be able to decide. I knew that very likely, not only would he change his mind, but he would be eager to take the testing once he saw what he was missing. “What you do know can help you” is what I think he’ll be saying soon. His employees are thrilled at the opportunity to find out what their skills are and how they can match up what they do every day to what they enjoy. There is the fear of losing their jobs if they are not a good match, but it is the same fear as being fired or quitting out of frustration. This way, either their job will improve or they will finally have a clear idea of what they would enjoy. So far, we have uncovered a lot of hidden talent and added lots of possibilities for expanding services, changing responsibilities and matching up each person to what they are great at. We’ve also been able to take everyone’s future goals into consideration so that people would have long-term potential. Instead of secretly attending night courses for a new career, employees can share their interests and use them to benefit themselves and the company at the same time. If it’s not a win-win, it’s eventually a lose-lose. This company, and its employees, are transforming themselves into a winning team. PRISON OR JAIL? While the two terms are often used interchangeably, a prison and a jail are quite different. The most basic difference is the length of the inmates’ stay. Jails, generally run by local law enforcement, are designed to hold inmates for short-term and are used for those awaiting trial or serving a short sentence. Prisons are long-term detention facilities, usually run by state or federal governments, where convicted criminals typically serve their sentences for at least a year.
A FIVE-STAR PRISON The most luxurious prison in the world is the Justizzentrum Leoben Prison (Justice Center Leoben) in Austria, which is more like a luxury resort than a detention center. The decor is modern, the landscape beautiful, the amenities plentiful (private kitchenettes being one of them) and the cells spacious and full of sunlight. It makes one wonder if some detainees are not getting so much more than they would get at home, though I’d still prefer to be free! THE ROTARY JAIL The Squirrel Cage Jail in Iowa was one of the most unique prisons while in operation between 1885 and 1969. Its architecture, featuring revolving cells, allowed the jailer to keep watch on all prisoners without budging from his chair. No crime has to be committed to get to see it now, as it serves as a museum. And what an attraction it is!
THE FAMILY PRISON The prison in Aranjuez, Spain, which goes by their town name, is one where the prisoners’ families are accommodated in an effort to allow young children to bond with their incarcerated parents. The facilities in the family wing are child-oriented, and the youngsters’ overall health and comfort are of utmost priority. At the age of three, though, children are sent to live with relatives.

In Mexico, if a prisoner manages to escape, he has not broken a law. Recognizing that the desire for freedom is a basic human instinct, the government doesn’t punish anyone acting on that instinct — unless they use violence against prison personnel or property in doing so or if their escape is aided by fellow inmates or officials.
The average annual cost of incarcerating a single inmate in federal prison is approximately $29,000. Who sponsors all that? You, the taxpayer! Almost $70 billion annually is what incarceration costs add up to for the U.S. in a given year. The award for the highest prison rate in the world goes to the U.S., whether we like it or not. About 724 people for every 100,000 are currently behind bars. Where are they all detained? In the more than 5,000 jails and prisons across the U.S. Approximately 55 of them are in New York.
The world’s greatest prison escape artist is most probably Richard Lee McNair, who escaped prison three times, the last of the three times being the most ingenious. Taking advantage of his in-prison job of repairing old mail bags that were shipped out of the facility to local post offices, he created for himself an “escape pod” outfitted with a breathing tube and hid himself, in the pod, under the repaired mail bags awaiting shipment. He was shrink-wrapped and shipped out, from where he enjoyed his freedom for over a year. The next time he was caught, he was sent to ADX Florence in Colorado. Why there? “Supermax” prison ADX Florence is our country’s highest-security prison, which houses inmates deemed the most dangerous and in need of the tightest control.
As of January 25, 2018, there were 183,465 federal inmates in U.S. prisons. Since 2013, the numbers have been steadily decreasing. 2013
