THE DOWNSIDE OF FOAM INSULATION In a recent issue you shared with the community the benefits of investing in foam insulation in the house to help save on utility bills, and more importantly, to create a warm, cozy, draft-free house. Last year I made the investment after loads of research, and I must say that I saw instant results. My house no longer has cold drafts, and my boiler room is no longer active due to the fact that the house maintains its heat. On top of this, I have seen a considerable difference in my utility bill. Unfortunately, this remarkable change has indeed come with a price. Being that my house is super-insulated, the contrast in temperature between inside and outside causes condensation to collect on my windows. As a result of this, I have noticed mold growth. Upon asking the fellow who oversaw my project about this issue, he responded that he is an insulation specialist and not a mold or window specialist. In the past few days, I have spoken to a number of people who are also experiencing this issue, so I just want to make the tzibur aware of this potential side effect. A Homeowner

RE: THE HEALTH OF OUR CHILDREN (ISSUE #128) Regarding the claim that unhealthy meals are served in our chedarim/schools, I beg to disagree. As a grandparent, parent of school-age children, parent of a teacher and a teacher myself (all of the above at least five different institutions), I would like to assure you that the meals served are wholesome, hearty, nutritious and delicious. Whole-wheat breads, pastas, bagels and pizza bagels are standard fare, as are yogurts. Knishes, goulash, blintzes, cholent and mashed M&S SHOE REPAIR

potatoes are also regularly on the menu. Soups served are vegetable and mushroom. Fruits include apples, peaches (when in season), occasional bananas and tangerines. I’ve recently tasted a delicious cucumber-lettuce salad, and at times there are full vegetable salads, baby carrots, baby tomatoes or corn. Baked ziti and lukshen cheese kugels are intermittent delicacies. French fries and fish sticks are part of the menu and are baked. Fleishig choices may include chicken, chicken nuggets, franks and potato kugel. I’ve seen spreads of tuna salad, egg salad, cream cheese and peanut butter (not all facilities are peanut-free). Drinks include milk, water and apple juice (on days when fleishigs is served). Naturally, not all choices appeal to all children, but that can’t be helped. Younger children generally sit at a lunch table with their teacher who serves portions. Older children will line up at a serving table with a plate and be served. There are schools/chedarim where children will serve themselves, but I fail to see the problem with that. If your own child seems to have gained weight and you believe it is due to the school lunches, I would suggest you speak to the teacher about the child’s food choices and amounts. Advice from a nutritionist would be helpful. Unfortunately, many children arrive at school without having eaten breakfast. With many two-parent working households, the concept of serving a hot, nutritious first meal of the day seems to have fallen at the wayside. Some children may also not be hungry first thing in the morning, but their appetite will have perked up once they arrive at school fully awake. In my younger parenting days, if my children heard of a home serving toast, scrambled eggs, vegetables and hot cocoa for supper, they would consider that breakfast at dinnertime. Children will perform better academically in school if they eat breakfast on a regular basis. An empty stomach will cause a child to be distracted. Their classwork and behavior will suffer. Many children leave their homes as early as 6:30 a.m. (davening schedules) and cannot possibly eat breakfast at such an early hour. Baruch Hashem, schools have incorporated breakfast as part of their daily schedule. Naturally, children who are served breakfast at home will limit their intake at school. Supper? Sorry, but with school and/or cheder dismissal ranging anywhere from 2:30 to 6:00 p.m., supper is not served. Supper is, however, served for boys in yeshivah who either reside in a yeshivah’s dormitory or boys who don’t return home until the evening hours. Generally, children return home quite hungry. Cut-up fruit is a delicious snack for the early returnees, and I’m sure you don’t need me, a stranger, outlining what constitutes a healthy supper. As to the lack of exercise programs, in that you are correct. Aside from the warmer months in which children are encouraged to participate in outdoor activities, there’s not much exercising being done indoors. Gym is generally not part of the curriculum. Perhaps you can encourage jumping jacks or calisthenics once your child returns home or consider forming/joining an after-school children’s fitness class. Hatzlacha, R.S.

RE: THE CHANGING FACE OF MONSEY’S SHOPPING DISTRICT (ISSUE #123) We love The Monsey View! Regarding the feature on Monsey’s shopping district in Issue #123, I wanted to share that the first pizza shop in town was most probably Reb Chezkela Klein in a truck driving around Rita Avenue and selling pizza, falafel and French fries (maybe soft ice cream, too) before opening his storefront shop. Ki Tov was then housed in a quaint shop that is still stand-

ing on the corner of Saddle River Road and Route 59. Sweet childhood memories from about 40 years ago. For us children who until then only ate bread from the freezer, we began getting fresh bread, milk and eggs delivered to the door in metal containers so our famous squirrels wouldn’t get to our breakfast first. What mesiras nefesh it was to deliver those items in the wee hours of the morning so Yiddishe kinderlach should have breakfast ready. We have much appreciation to the special people who started “truck shops.” Last but not least, my kids were finely dressed by the Man with the Truck with matching outfits, bubbles with big white ruffled collars in the summer and cozy velours in the winter 25 years ago for $5 apiece. A mechayah! Thanks to them, shopping was a breeze! Chaya Sury Rosenzweig

Interestingly, I’ve just pulled down a long-ago stored bag of knitting supplies. I knew it was there, but it was just one of those things that I don’t make much note of and gets pushed to the right or left when cleaning for Pesach. But now that I’m reacquainting myself with knitting, I’m glad I have. Does anyone remember the store name The Knitting Bug that used to be at 50 Route 59? Although I recall it being located in the vicinity of Shimon’s Barber Shop, according to the address on the sturdy-handled bag, it’s more likely it was located at the site of Main Street Florist. The store existed at least 18 years ago, as the telephone number shown still has the 914 area code. R.S.

Rebbetzin Tzivi (Grama) Tukshinsky WILL NOW BE PROUDLY PRESENTED IN AN ABRIDGED FORM RIGHT HERE IN MONSEY! From seasoned principals and bubbies, to psychologists, kallah teachers, therapists, teachers and parents; from wide acceptance in all the most high standard, discerning Chassidish, Litvish and Sephardic circles; women in Eretz Yisroel have embraced this revolutionary mindset, easily implementing it into their daily lives – effecting huge changes in their homes. THE INSIDE NUTRITION BY TANYA:

EDITION CHAPTER 20

By: Basya Kovacs

ASIDE FROM OUR NUTRITION, fitness and product departments, there is another, lesser-known department at Nutrition by Tanya that is becoming more and more popular as we get to know our clients’ needs. This is our coaching department. Staffed by certified life coaches as well as expertly trained counselors, our coaching department is an offshoot of our nutrition program, filling a huge need for our clients. While working with clients, we found that for many people, having an excellent food plan, full support from their counselor and weekly accountability was enough to help them lose weight and keep it off. For others, despite all of the above, the struggle to stay on plan was overwhelming, and they were falling off track despite all the tools, tips and skills they were learning while being on plan. We realized that for these clients, we needed to go deeper. Working on food was not enough; we needed to address their life. And so, our coaching department was born. What is coaching, and how is it different from being on a food plan? The coach and the client work together to see what is working, what isn’t working, why it isn’t working and where the client wants to go with that. Coaching sessions are longer and allow the counselor and client to go in depth into the life of the client and address recurring issues that get in the way of the client’s success. Keep in mind that coaching isn’t therapy; it is client-driven, goal-oriented and, in our case, healthand nutrition-focused. Many clients feel that in their fifteenminute weigh-in, they touch on certain issues that are getting in the way of their success, but don’t have the time to explore these issues or address them practically. The longer session with the coach as a facilitator allows them to really take the time to get to the core of things and address it realistically. The feedback from our clients has been amazing. Many of them feel that they have

56 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 3, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

been able to overcome the roadblocks that have been keeping them stuck in the cycle of bad eating habits. This is what Etty from Monsey had to say: “After meeting with my Nutrition By Tanya counselor the first time, I felt super comfortable with the goals we set and the meal plan that was created for me. The first few weeks were great. I stuck to the plan religiously and I really started shedding pounds. Little by little, though, I slipped back into my old binge-eating routine and started dreading my weekly weigh-ins. I didn’t really understand what was happening and why I suddenly had such weak resolve and self-control. “My counselor recommended seeing the on-staff coach, which I agreed to try. Together with my coach I was able to explore the deeper emotional aspects of my eating habits. It was such a validating and empowering experience and allowed me to focus on what I really want for myself and my happiness. After my six coaching sessions, I went back to regular weekly weigh-ins with less dread, and more focus and clarity. And I am back to losing more than a pound a week!” While I am not a certified life coach, my experience helping thousands of clients get to the core issues surrounding their eating habits affords me the experience needed to make real and lasting change. So when I run out of time with a client during a weekly weigh-in and feel like there are layers and layers yet untapped, I often tell my client to sign up for a coaching package! Basya Kovacs is a nutrition counselor at Nutrition by Tanya and is the manager of the Monsey and Monroe locations. Nutrition by Tanya offers personalized and practical weight management and nutrition counseling for men, women and children. Nutrition by Tanya has locations in Boro Park, Flatbush, Williamsburg, Monsey, Lakewood, Crown Heights, Five Towns and Monroe. The office can be reached at 844-TANYA-DIET.

SHOPRITE WAS HOLDING A BIG SALE. At such low prices, Breindy* decided to stock up. She filled her wagon with a large number of bottles in many varieties. While she was in Shoprite, she also bought five toothbrushes, one for each of her children. Breindy checked out and pushed the heavy wagon to her car. As she lifted the last bag into the car, she noticed a toothbrush on the bottom of the wagon. It probably fell out of the bag, she thought. As she was about to drop the toothbrush into one of the bags, a thought stuck her: Maybe it was never rung up in the first place? With a sigh, Breindy pulled out the receipt to see if all five toothbrushes had been rung up. She looked up and down the receipt, but she had purchased so many products that the receipt was very long. It would take her a very long time to try to locate the toothbrushes in the receipt. So Breindy headed back into Shoprite with the toothbrush and the receipt, hoping that a store employee could scan the receipt electronically to see whether or not the toothbrush had been paid for. When Breindy spoke with the lady at the customer service counter, the lady explained that this could not be done; they would have to go through the entire receipt to look for the toothbrush. The lady took the receipt and slowly made her way down the long list of items. Finally, she found it. “Here it is! Four toothbrushes — you’re good to go,” said the lady. “Thank you so much, but I still need to pay for this one. I actually bought five toothbrushes, not four,” explained Breindy to the woman’s utter astonishment. In this week’s parsha, Hashem speaks to Moshe Rabbeinu from within a thorn bush. The Midrash says that this is to teach us that there is no place that is devoid of Hashem’s Presence — not even a thorn bush. The Sfas Emes concludes from this that the purpose of galus is that Klal Yisroel should reveal the extent of Hashem’s malchus, which extends to every place on Earth. He adds that the true

62 / THE MONSEY VIEW

meaning of galus is hisgalus, or revelation — that the glory of Hashem’s kingdom be revealed everywhere, in all places. The Sfas Emes goes on to explain that Klal Yisroel is unique in its ability to create openings through which kedusha can be revealed in this world. When we declared “Naaseh v’nishmah!” (Shemos 24:7), we were actualizing the light of Torah to which we had already been attached on a deep spiritual level. The Torah is embedded in the hearts of Klal Yisroel. It is hidden while we are in galus, but all we need to do is yearn for its revelation. Thus it says in the Haggadah that is was within the galus of Mitzrayim that “The Holy One, blessed be He, revealed Himself to them and redeemed them.” There, on a lonely stretch of Route 202 in Pomona, NY, far from the kedusha of Eretz Yisroel, deep in the heart of galus, one Jewish woman created an opening that revealed Hashem’s malchus. She may have thought she was being exceedingly honest (she was), and she may have concluded that she made a kiddush Hashem (she did), but she did much more than that. She carried out part of her purpose here in galus. The Gemara says that the purpose of galus is to gather in neshamos — the geirim from among the nations of the world. The Arizal explains that every object and every force has a spark of kedusha buried within it, which is its “neshamah,” and we are meant to gather these in as well. When we use an object or place to do a mitzvah, we release these sparks. It is for this reason that we have been scattered to the four corners of the Earth: to redeem sparks of holiness throughout the world. Every time we do a mitzvah, we are doing the job Hashem has assigned us to do while we are in galus. So if you find yourself in the Port Authority, the New York City subway or any other place that is difficult to imagine contains any holiness whatsoever, realize that this place may have been waiting for you to come along and recite a bracha. In doing so, you bring us one step closer to the geulah sheleimah, may it come speedily in our days.

Arctic Chill Freezes Out Hudson Ferry Service THE FRIGID TEMPERATURES that have left many area residents wondering if they are living in Alaska instead of New York have temporarily shut down the Hudson River ferry that transports riders between Haverstraw and Ossining. The Journal News reported that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced last Friday that the ferry will be closed until further notice because ice on the river prevented the ferry from making its regularly scheduled trips. Commuters can take an MTA bus from Haverstraw

to Tarrytown instead, where they can connect with Metro-North train service. New York Waterways runs 14 ferries to Ossining and 15 ferries to Haverstraw from 5:50 a.m. daily, and the last time the ferry was suspended due to freezing conditions on the Hudson was in 2015. Meanwhile, experts continue to warn everyone to keep on bundling up, as temperatures are not expected to hit the freezing mark in our area until Monday.

More Than $100 Million in Bottle Deposits Unclaimed, Says State Report CAN’T BE BOTHERED to return those deposit bottles you bought on your last trip to the grocery store? Apparently you’re not alone. According to a report released by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, more than two billion recyclable containers sold in New York in 2016 were not returned by consumers in order to reclaim their nickel deposit. Translating that into dollars and cents, over $102 million in bottle deposits went unclaimed by consumers. In 1982, a five-cent deposit charge was enacted under state law on all beer, soda, bottled water and certain other beverages in an effort to encourage recycling and cut back on solid waste in New York. Nickel deposits that aren’t redeemed are supposed to be split between the state and the seller, with the state receiving 80 percent of the total amount. But according to the audit, which studied mandatory quarterly reports filed between April 2014 and February 2017, more than 10 percent of the state’s 356 active bottle deposit collectors either failed to file some or all of their reports, while other reports were found to contain errors. While the state’s Department of Taxation and Finance notified deposit collectors of the mistakes, no further

steps were taken and no penalties were issued. “My auditors found the state Department of Taxation and Finance’s oversight over the program can be improved so environmental programs are not getting shortchanged,” said DiNapoli. “The department needs to do a better job collecting the money that could be used to protect and preserve our state’s natural resources, parkland, waterways and beaches.” About $212.2 million in unclaimed deposits were collected by the state in 2015 and 2016.

Flu Season Hits Hard in New York OVER 1,800 CONFIRMED CASES of the flu have been reported so far this year, according to The Journal News. Fifty-four out of sixty-two counties in the state have confirmed cases of influenza, with 612 patients hospitalized as of mid-December. New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard

66 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 3, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Zucker urged everyone ages six months old and up to get immunized against the flu. The nasal spray vaccine is not recommended this year, according to Zucker. Flu typically continues through May and, based on the current number of cases already reported, experts predict that it will be a particularly bad season this year.

Worrying about Marriage Finding Comfort, Confidence and Calm in a World of Concern Based on a lecture by Rabbi Fischel Schachter

W

When I was nineteen years old and learning in Yeshiva Torah V’Daas, there was at one point three different boys expected to get married within a short time of each other. However, much to the chagrin of everyone, two of the marriages never came to fruition. In one instance, the kallah dropped the shidduch; in the other case, the boy went for a routine doctor exam only to be told that something suspicious was discovered. That, as well, caused enough worry to call off the wedding. Now there only remained one more boy scheduled to be married. His name was Shloimy, and he was my chavrusa. After hearing that these two other boys experienced such a heartbreaking reality of their future marriages disintegrating, he was extremely worried. “I am certain I will not get married,” he said to me. “The Gemara (Shabbos 106a) says that if one person in a group dies, everyone in the group should worry. Here, two boys had their weddings called off. The same is bound to happen to me.” Trying to calm him down, I said, “Shloimy, tell me what you are worried about.” And so, hesitantly, he began. “The wedding is scheduled to be in Connecticut. What if on the way to the wedding I will get a flat tire?” “That is what you’re worried about?” I exclaimed. “Don’t worry; we’ll drive behind you.” “What if you get a flat tire,” he said.

70 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 3, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

“We’ll make sure to have a pickup truck full of tires.” Still burdened with fears of the unexpected, he said, “What if there is a storm?” “So we’ll get umbrellas.” “What if they close the highways? What if there is a terrorist attack?” I didn’t know how long the list was going to be, but he continued, “What if my kallah drops the shidduch?” “Listen, Shloimy,” I said, interrupting him. “I hate to tell you this, but if your kallah hears what you are worried about, she may have good reason to call off the wedding.” I knew Shloimy was always a sensible boy, but here he was going off the deep end. Sitting there trying to help Shloimy, I wasn’t getting too far. As we continued to attempt to work matters out, a man walked into the room. Fortunately, he was a mental health professional. Walking over to him, I said, “If you don’t mind helping, Shloimy is really worried about his wedding. I do not know what to do.” “Don’t worry,” the man replied, “it’s completely normal. It is the pre-trauma period before married life. Just tell him to come over to me.” Shloimy headed over to the man and began speaking to him, and somehow I was privy to sit in on the private session. “Take a piece of paper and fold it in half,” he said to Shloimy. “On one side of the page, write the word ‘probability,’ and on the other side write ‘non-probability.’ Now, what are you worried about?” he asked.

“I am embarrassed to tell you,” Shloimy shyly muttered. “Don’t be ashamed, just go ahead.” “Well, I am worried about getting a flat tire.” “Okay, Shloimy, what are the chances of getting a flat tire?” “About 2 percent,” he answered. “Fine.” The man considered. “Let’s say 2 percent. Now write on the other side of the paper that there is 98 percent non-probability that you will get a flat tire.” “Well,” continued Shloimy, “I am also worried about a terrorist attack.” “Okay, how likely is that to happen?” “About 1 percent,” answered Shloimy. “So write 99 percent non-probability on the other side.” With each of the concerns raised, there was always more than a 90 percent non-probability chance. Concluding the talk with Shloimy, the man said, “Whenever you are worried, look at the paper and calculate what the statistics are.” After this conversation, it seemed that Shloimy felt better. As Shloimy went home that night, however, he began to fret again. What happened? His list of every possible consideration of what could go wrong grew and grew until he had a nice long list. It was close to an encyclopedia. But that wasn’t it. He started adding up the statistics as follows: 2 percent chance of a flat tire plus 1 percent chance of a terrorist attack plus 3 percent chance of a storm plus 1 percent chance that he will not be well plus 1 percent chance that the kallah will not be well and so on. At the end of the count, there was a sum total of way over 100 percent that he was not getting married. I didn’t know how to help him any longer. But finally, one day while we were in yeshivah, that all changed. As I was talking to Shloimy about his laundry list of worries, a gentleman entered the room. He was

selling raffle tickets for a menorah. It was then that the idea occurred to me. I was going to buy a raffle ticket for him. And so I did. I then went to Shloimy and said, “Shloimy, you know what? I bought a raffle ticket for you for a menorah.” He looked at me strangely. “What do you mean a raffle ticket?” “You should call your future father-in-law,” I told Shloimy,” and tell him that if he plans on buying you a menorah for Chanukah he shouldn’t, because you are going to win this raffle.” “Are you out of your mind?” Shloimy shouted. “I never win these things!” “Look,” I said, trying to calm him down. “What are the chances of you winning this menorah? It is the same as all these other worries you have. If you are so sure that these unfortunate incidents are going to happen, how come you are unsure that you are going to win the menorah?” After saying that, Shloimy calmed down a bit. I finally felt that I had done well. And, indeed, for the next two weeks, Shloimy was at peace. But then the fateful day arrived. As I walked into the yeshivah one morning, Shloimy was not there. And that wasn’t good news, because he was known for his punctuality. It was then that I was notified that a phone call awaited me. “It’s Shloimy father,” the boys told me. Uneasy and nervous, I slowly approached the payphone hanging on the wall. With shaking hands, I picked up the phone. “Hello?” “Hi, it’s Shloimy father. She called. It’s not good; come over to the house.” When I heard these words, my heart sank. His kallah must have called off the engagement. As I hung up the phone, all that could be heard among the boys standing nearby was, “She called, she called…” Walking to Shloimy’s house, my knees were shak-

“I hate to tell you this, but if your kallah hears what you are worried about, she may have good reason to call off the wedding.”

ing and I felt terrible. I opened the door and headed upstairs to Shloimy's room. The room was dark, and I knew that I was in for the worst news. Turning to Shloimy, I quietly asked, “When did she call?” Shloimy said, “I don’t know, about an hour ago.” “What did she say?” As I asked this question, Shloimy immediately picked up his head in bewilderment. “What do you mean, ‘What did she say?’ She works as a secretary in a school and said that she found out that I just won a menorah. Do you know what this means?” It then hit me. “She called” not to break the engagement, but rather to congratulate Shloimy on winning the menorah. Yet Shloimy could not deal with the unexpected results of his winning. If he could win the lottery, the chances of something wrong occurring before his wedding were that much more real. When I finally understood this, I wasn’t sure if I should cry or laugh. “What do we learn from this?” Shloimy said with a crack in his voice, “What do we learn from this?” I sighed in exasperation. “You know what we learn from this? Next time you don’t ask me for advice.” Yet, despite this incident, it was not long before matters improved. After discussing the issue with the mashgiach of the yeshivah and being reassured that Hashem ultimately runs the world, Shloimy finally came to terms with handling his upcoming marriage. And baruch Hashem, without the flat tires, terrorist attacks and turbulent storms, Shloimy finally got married. In life, we tend to worry and worry and worry some more. But sometimes we would be much better off readjusting our perspective and, instead of considering everything that could go wrong, placing our trust in Hashem. While we may be led to believe that matters will go awry and the worst is inevitable, those statistics only say so much. When we are informed that we in fact won the menorah, our response should be to say to ourselves, “I know, Hashem, You are running the show. You created the world, and You determine who wins the lottery.” Rabbi Fischel Schachter is a highly acclaimed and much-loved scholar, international lecturer, storyteller and author. Cozy

Friday Night

Fare

By: Leah Stern

Now, with Shabbos coming in early, we get to enjoy the Friday night seudah at an earlier time. This allows us to spend quality time with alert and present children (and parents), and I find that some additions to the basic menu are enjoyed during these months. These traditional classics with a twist of creativity will enhance your meal and are elegant enough to serve to after-dinner guests.

STRUDEL Authentic strudel baking is a time-consuming chore that requires both skill and patience. “In der alte heim,” a true symbol of a balabusta was that she was able to stretch her dough thin enough to read a newspaper through it without tearing any holes in the delicate dough. Strudel baking has become a lost and forgotten art to us American-bred girls, but this simple-to-prepare substitute with two choice fillings will wow your guests and please their palates.

DOUGH 3 cups flour

DIRECTIONS:

6 ounces warm water

1. In a medium-sized bowl, combine all dough ingredients and mix until a smooth dough is formed.

½ cup oil

2. Divide dough in three.

2 T. baking powder

3. On a parchment paper, roll out dough into a rectangular shape that is the length of a cookie sheet, stretching it as thin as possible.

2 T. sugar

4. Prepare the desired filling and divide in three.

Pinch of salt

5. If using cranberries, spread ½ cup cranberry sauce along the center third of each dough.

1 egg, beaten

APPLE FILLING 12 apples (a combination of Granny Smith, Golden Delicious and Cortland or Macintosh works best) ¾ cup sugar 2 tsp. cinnamon Using the food processor or the thin slicer on a four-sided grater, slice apples thinly and mix with sugar and cinnamon.

6. Place apples along the center third of the dough (or on top of cranberry sauce). 7. Sprinkle filling with breadcrumbs. 8. Fold the two sides of the dough over the filling. 9. Lift the strudel, supporting it from under the parchment paper, and flip onto a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet, being careful to retain shape. 10. Brush with egg whites and sprinkle demerara sugar or sugar crystals. 11. Bake at 350° for one hour.

CRANBERRY-APPLE FILLING ¾ of the apple filling recipe 1½ cups cranberry sauce (use either canned or homemade)

TOPPINGS ½ cup bread crumbs One egg white Demerara sugar or sugar crystals

HOMEMADE CRANBERRY SAUCE This sauce is much more flavorful than the canned variety. 1 package fresh or frozen cranberries 1 cup sugar 1 cup water Bring all ingredients to a boil. Reduce heat and cook for 10–15 minutes, until the berries pop. Allow to cool.

CHESTNUTS “Kest” is popular Friday night fare among European descendants, and I was sure that there was some minhag involved. After researching it, though, I learned that its popularity stems from the fact that chestnut trees grew in abundance in Hungary and other European countries, making it widely available, inexpensive (unlike the $8.99 a pound we pay locally!) and the perfect food to serve. This nostalgic food can be roasted or cooked and tastes best when served warm.

OVEN-ROASTED METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 400°. 2. With a sharp knife, score each chestnut all around the center so it can be easily halved after baking. 3. Place them in a baking pan, single layer. 4. Bake for 30-45 minutes. 5. Remove shell before serving or cut in half and spoon out with a small spoon. Good-quality chestnuts should have a light colored texture on the inside.

COOKED METHOD 1. Place chestnuts in a small saucepan with enough water to cover. 2. Bring to a boil.

3. Cook on medium flame for approximately two and a half to three hours, until flesh is soft.

MANGO GREEN TEA My mother’s lucite tea box filled with both exotic and oldfashioned tea bags is testimony to our family’s affinity for tea. Even her young grandchildren won’t refuse a hot, sweetened drink from Bubby (served with a cinnamon stick for good measure). On Friday nights, everyone is welcome to warm up with her cozy blends brewed in jars of various sizes lined up on the kitchen counter. Green tea has antioxidants and other health benefits as well, but it is intense. So if you’re not accustomed to its flavor, start with a lighter blend and allow tea bags to steep longer only after you’re comfortable with its distinctive taste.

INGREDIENTS: 2¼ cups boiling water 2–3 bags green tea 1 can Prigat Mango Nectar (11.2 ounces) 1½ tsp. vanilla sugar 1–1½ T. sugar

DIRECTIONS: 1. Steep tea bags in boiling water for approximately five minutes. 2. Remove tea bags. 3. Bring to a boil in a twoquart pot along with rest of ingredients. 4. Place on blech or hot plate at keep-warm temperature

When we think of cold winter months, we think of heated homes, sweaters and warm soup, but for animals exposed to the elements, winter means something completely different. Some animals grow a heavier coat of fur to help them survive the cold, other creatures migrate and yet others react in a completely different manner: Instead of warding off the cold or fleeing inclement weathers, these animals hibernate. Without peeking below, try to answer this: Which animal truly hibernates? Have you answered the bear? Surprisingly, while the meaning of hibernation has been redefined and stretched to include the physiological state of the bear during winter, bears do not hibernate in the true sense of the word, despite their long sleep. So what then does hibernating mean? Hibernating animals enter a physiological state of torpor, or hibernation sleep. In this state, an animal’s metabolism, heart rate and respiration slow dramatically, to only a few heartbeats and breaths each minute, and their body temperature adjusts to almost match the temperature outside. In this usually near-freezing state, these animals appear almost dead and are very difficult to wake up. However, when these warm-blooded animals don’t need to constantly maintain their body temperatures, they can conserve their energy when food is scarce. To prepare for the winter months, animals need to stockpile some source of energy. Some animals store a surplus of food in their burrows for when they awake between cycles of torpor, while other animals increase their food intake significantly to build up a reserve of extra fat that can later be used as an energy source. This fat, called brown fat, also provides body heat to hibernating animals. These fat tissues build up around the brain, heart and lungs of these animals, and when it is time to wake up from torpor, these layers of fat provide warmth to these organs to help them return to their regular body temperature. Strangely (or maybe not; this holds true for humans, too!), animals awaken after hibernation very exhausted and need some more sleep to recover from their previous sleep before joining the world fully once again.

BEARS

Back to our bears. Remarkably, bears can sleep through about six or seven months straight, without waking at all, and live off their fat supplies. Other hibernating animals, on the other hand, do get up every few days or weeks to forage for food, probably because their smaller bodies can’t stockpile as much fat as the bear. However, while the heart rate of bears drops significantly, their body temperature only drops slightly. This allows them to wake up quickly, while true hibernators are difficult to wake.

GROUND SQUIRRELS

Not to be confused with the tree squirrels we share our streets and lawns with, ground squirrels can be found in central North America. Ground squirrels hibernate in comfortable burrows with separate rooms for sleeping, storing food and so on. They wake every now and then to eat a little stored food, but when in torpor, their body temperature drops to just above burrow temperature, and their heart rate and respiration also slow dramatically.

GROUNDHOGS

These animals are popular hibernators, known for predicting the arrival of spring on Groundhog Day in early February each year. According to folklore, this is the day the groundhog appears from its burrow after hibernation. Traditionally, if the groundhog sees its shadow and retreats to his hole, frightened, it means six more weeks of winter are coming. If it is cloudy and the groundhog sees no shadow, then spring is on its way! Groundhogs, at their maximum weight to ensure survival, enter a state of torpor during the fall each year. They hibernate in winter burrows, especially dug deep to protect them from the cold, and they go through a repetitive cycle of torpor and wakefulness throughout the winter. When in torpor, their body temperature drops to about 40 degrees.

LITTLE BROWN BATS

Little brown bats, one of the most common bats in North America, hibernate for about six months, until insects return in the spring. Bats in torpor are in a near-freezing state, along with slowed metabolism and respiration, and can go minutes without drawing a breath! Similar to their preferred roosting areas, bats hibernate in dark caves or old mines, which is probably why bats are associated with all things creepy. When they return to activity in the spring, they will have lost approximately half their body weight.

92 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 3, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

OTHER DEEP SLEEPERS Hibernating creatures enter torpor when their world turns cold and food is limited. But what about animals who live under other kinds of harsh conditions, such as the dry air and extreme heat of deserts? Parallel to hibernation exists a phenomenon known as aestivation. Aestivation is a state of torpor similar to hibernation that allows animals living in such hot climates to conserve energy when there is a dire lack of resources. While ground squirrels in the north hibernate during winter, ground squirrels in the southwest aestivate during summer. For animals with high metabolic rates and bodies too tiny to store excess fat, even daily survival can be difficult, no matter the season. These animals may enter torpor for a few hours every day in order to stay alive when not foraging for food. A common example of such a creature is the hummingbird. Hummingbirds, when active, beat their wings between 12 and 80 times each second (depending on their species) and need an enormous amount of energy simply to stay alive. By becoming torpid each night, they can lower their metabolic needs and stay alive until continuing their search for food the following day. As an aside, hummingbirds sometimes loosen their grip on tree branches while sleeping. If you ever find one of these tiny creatures hanging upside down, never fear — it may be in torpor!

FATTAILED DWARF LEMURS

To prepare for drier months, fat-tailed dwarf lemurs eat an enormous amount of food, increasing their body weight by about 40 percent. Oddly, all this surplus fat settles in their tails, and this reserve of energy and water keeps them alive through their months of hibernation. These dwarf lemurs, native to Madagascar, are the the only primates known to hibernate. Unlike other hibernating animals, these lemurs do not enter torpor because the cold limits their food supply, but rather because the drought does. When researching this phenomenon, scientists discovered that contrary to popular belief, body temperature does not necessarily drop during torpor, because the body temperature of lemurs fluctuates between 49 and 86 degrees to match their environment!

COMMON POORWILL

Found in western United States, the common poorwill has the distinction of being the only bird known to go into torpor for weeks or months at a time. There is good reason the Hopi tribe of Native Americans gave this bird a name that translates to “The Sleeping One. Scientists, however, were unaware of this hibernating bird until much later, when Dr. Edmund Jaeger discovered torpid poorwills in California in the late 1940s.

We all know that feeling of “get me outta here!” that comes when we’ve been stuck in one environment for too long. It’s that ants-in-the-pants feeling of not being able to tolerate being locked in one second longer. And it’s got a name. Called “cabin fever” by the layman, it affects a large percentage of the population during the winter. Especially prominent in locales with low winter temps and scant sunlight, cabin fever can affect anyone, but appears to more often affect women than men. The term “cabin fever” is thought to have originated in the early 1900s to describe the symptoms experienced by sailors who spent extended periods of time at sea, sometimes stuck in ice traps for weeks on end. These sailors were often listless, anxious and prone to lashing out. Over time, the term began to be applied to anyone who spends too much time confined in one place, which is most typical during the winter months. Symptoms of cabin fever can manifest whenever a person feels trapped for more than a few days at a time. The American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association list the signs of cabin fever as: A lack of patience

Difficulty concentrating

Always feeling tired

Craving carbs and sugar

Feeling unproductive/unmotivated

Difficulty waking

Feeling sad or depressed

Sleep disturbances

Lethargy

Social withdrawal Irritability

Or as one man put it, “Cabin fever: Temper gets short. Very short.” It’s quite common for even close family members to find that loved ones begin irrationally irritating them when they’ve spent too much time in close quarters. Families with children, especially, are prone to increased risk of cabin fever when the winter hits. After all, keeping kids entertained indoors and out of spats can be a monumental strain on the nerves when the days just keep passing by. But that’s not to say that there’s nothing to be done for the winter blues. Here are some ideas to kick cabin fever:

ESTABLISH A ROUTINE Setting a daily schedule for wake-up, davening, clean-up, etc. can add structure and stability to the day, leaving gaps of unfilled time sparse. Even if you’re locked in for only a few days, a schedule can do much to alleviate boredom and the suffocating need to escape.

FRESH AIR While it’s obviously dangerous to venture outdoors in white-out conditions during a blizzard, once the storm has settled, a romp through the snow is just what the doctor ordered. Even if there’s no snow, a half hour in the great outdoors will do wonders — as long as you take care to dress warmly.

LEARN SOMETHING NEW Been wanting to tackle a new skill for some time now? Before the blues set in, pull out those projects and get cracking. The excitement over a new skill can keep you going as the days drag on. Similarly, keeping a box filled with new toys and arts ‘n crafts can keep the kids from going at it — for a while at least!

Don’t over- or under-sleep, or you risk setting yourself up for trouble. Use alarms to wake yourself after you’ve had normative sleep, if necessary.

THAT’S SO SAD! Still spiraling downward? It may not be cabin fever; it may be Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is a form of clinical depression that some people get each year. For most people, it occurs during the winter months, though a rare few get it during the summer. SAD is unique in that the depressive symptoms set in and subside at the same times each year. Theories abound as to what causes SAD, but most medical practitioners believe that SAD can be related to either changes in the

circadian rhythm or low levels of vitamin D. In truth, they are both related to quality and quantity of sun exposure and may go hand-in-hand. A quick glance around the world reveals interesting statistics in regard to SAD. Down in Florida where the sun shines brightly throughout the year, SAD affects only about 1% of the population, whereas heading north towards the D.C. area brings the average up to about 4%. And if you head over to Alaska, you’ll find a nice amount of SADly-affected people at roughly 10% of the population. Overcast and chilly Ireland rings in with a whopping 20% of SAD-affected citizens. Surprisingly, though, Iceland seems to be the exception to the rule. Despite its northern location and short 4- to 5-hour days of sun in December and January, Icelanders have an extremely low percentage of people affected by SAD. Researchers speculate that they may either be genetically predisposed to handle the massively fluctuating daily cycles, or that their diets rich in fish, which contain high amounts of vitamin D, may help them overcome potential SADness. It was actually a doctor himself who discovered SAD and its connection to natural light. In the 1980s, Dr. Normal Rosenthal was feeling pretty down in the dumps after a move from South Africa to America, and he was curious as to why. He theorized that the drastic change in natural light exposure during the winter was to blame. Though his theory was originally met with skepticism, it has now become widely accepted. A contemporary of Dr. Rosenthal, Dr. Kern, also had the same hypothesis and proposed to researchers at the National Institute of Mental Health that perhaps lack of light was the culprit behind many a depression. Intrigued, NIMH scientists created a lightbox that simulated natural rays and exposed Dr. Kern to it. Within a few exposures, Dr. Kern began to feel better, as did other patients who also used the lightbox.

TREATMENTS FOR SAD LIGHTBOX THERAPY has become a standard treatment for those who suffer from SAD. So standard, in fact, that the state of Alaska and the Alaska Mental Health Association teamed up to create legislation for Medicaid patients to be reimbursed for lightboxes when the diagnosis is SAD. To be effective, patients must sit facing the light for 30–60 minutes daily. (It’s a great time to catch up on reading!) Most people report feeling better within a week, though the full effect takes place over several weeks. Lightboxes are relatively inexpensive and appear to be highly effective. It should be noted that the FDA has not approved light therapy as safe, nor has it labeled the therapy as dangerous, though caution should definitely be exercised in regard to lights that do not prevent UV exposure. NEGATIVE AIR IONIZATION has also been found to be helpful in some cases. By releasing dense, negatively-charged ions into the sleeping environment via machine, some people have found relief from SAD. VITAMIN D, though not fully proven by science, is touted by many doctors to relieve symptoms of SAD. It is worthwhile to have your levels tested and to supplement if levels are low. PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION may be warranted if other methods of treatment fail and there is concern over the patient’s mental health and safety. EXERCISE has proven to enhance the benefits of various therapies, though it may not always have tremendous effect when utilized alone.

A

ri was at his wits end. He had tried everything. But he was losing his kids. Both in his life and from the Torah way of life. His wife had gone off the derech and was taking their kids with her. Ari had filed for a divorce and was fighting for custody of his children, so that he could raise them to be Torahdik Jews… but he was losing. He had already spent thousands of dollars fighting the legal battle, and the final day of the court case, when the judge would make his decision, was coming soon. KAPAYI'M IN Dear ,‫כלל ישראל‬ Like so many of you reading this, I am a mother. A proud mother of 5 ‫ לעכטיגע קינדערלאך ב"ה‬. And as a mother, what do I ask? What do all mother’s ask? That we should be able to provide for our children, to help them grow up to be the best they can be, that they be happy and .‫צופרידן‬ So, when I was diagnosed 9 months ago – my first thoughts were my children. With the ‫ אייבערשטערס‬help I would get the best care possible. Research the best doctors, hear all the options – and make decisions regarding my life – my care – b’ezras Hashem, my recuperation. But – what about my children? Who will be there to greet them when they come off the buses from school, on the days when I have to be in the hospital or have no strength? Who will feed them supper, put them to bed, or even listen to their stories? We were obviously in this for the long haul – this was going to be an ordeal for minimum a year, according to the doctors predictions – whom can I give over all my family responsibilities to and know that it is not a burden on them? Kapayim. They were there from the first week. Sending volunteers to the home, and taking care of my children and home – so that I can focus on just getting better. There is no way to describe my joy in witnessing my beloved children’s faces when they come back from their day at the cabin. How excited they are with every outing, every activity – even homework is a lookedforward to activity – when done in the company of their cherished “friends”. As my 9 year old daughter said to me so eloquently, “You know, Kapayim really cares about us”. Of course she said that. They celebrated her birthday with a huge surprise party and invited all her cousins and friends. You can imagine how thrilled she was! And how thrilled I was! My 11 year old son is a proud Kapayim masmidim member. Where they get together once a week and learn hands-on ‫ ל"ט מלאכות‬with a private Rebbe; where they spend time with other children their age, who understand them, who they can associate with. Who make the difference in their lives. Which in turn, makes all the difference in my life. On Wednesday, January 10th Kapayim will be hosting a ‫ יום תפילה‬for ‫חולי‬ ‫ ישראל‬in numerous communities. Where ‫ אידן‬will be gathering to recite sefer tehillim 1,000 times in homes, offices, schools and chadarim. My name will be there .‫בתוך שאר חולי ישראל‬ So, I beg of you, daven for me. So I can continue to be there for my children – to see their joy and watch them grow. And at the same time, please donate generously to ensure that Kapayim can continue to help families who are undergoing a medical crisis. Kapayim is here for me. As shlichim of the ‫ רבוש"ע‬they ensure that my family is taken care of. Will you say – Kapayim I’m Here For You? To sign up as a hostess or to find a location nearest you please call: 718412-8560

Chanukah is over, menorahs and dreidels are packed away, but the bitter winter wind is still howling outside. The few colors that can be seen through the frosted windows are the brown of the bare trees, the gray of the overcast sky (and the occasional whites of winter snow), and it’ll still be a while before blooming trees and colored blossoms take their place. With most of our days spent indoors, it sure would be nice to add a dose of comfort to our homes. Fortunately, it’s easy to decorate for winter, using natural elements and cool tones. Though the browns and grays may seem dreary outside, when incorporated in the indoor décor, they can create an appealing backdrop against soothing hues of winter white. With an added touch of greenery and a bit of sunshine, you’ll create a friendly haven in the unfriendly frost.

CLEAR THAT CLUTTER The first and most significant step in sprucing up a home is tackling the clutter. No matter how superlative your design skills or refined your taste, clutter detracts from the overall function and beauty of your space. Start Pesach cleaning early and declutter one room a week. You will be awed at the transformation of your home. Box it, bag it, sell it or give it. It’s time to clear your mind by clearing some space.

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN Grace your home with indoor plants. There’s nothing that says “Hang in there; spring is coming” like being surrounded by greenery. Plants breathe new life into your indoor spaces and also detoxify the air, lending a much-needed boost to your winterized moods. Don’t plants need plenty of sunshine, though? That’s a fair question, and you’ll be surprised to know that some plants actually do better in the cooler seasons. Some suitable choices are the snake plant, which provides air-purification; the bromeliad with its striking fiery hues; the exotic foliage of the zebra plant; and the timeless peace lily, one of the easiest indoor plants to maintain.

BRING ON THE LIGHT! As it gets dark earlier in winter, adding light sources to your home can increase your sense of well-being and overall cheeriness. When possible, light some candles around your home, and when children are around, fake wax candles are a great alternative. The soft, flickering glow warms the heart and makes the evening hours rather pleasant. Decorate fake candles with burlap or lace, or even spray paint custom designs to match your dĂŠcor! Nothing holds a candle to the ambience created by a few candles.

LET THE SUNSHINE IN! With a measly few hours of sunlight each day, making the most of these rays can help lighten and brighten your space — and mood. Strategically hang mirrors to reflect windows so that beams of sunlight can bounce into the room. Mirrors also create the sense of space in small rooms. Go with the classic framed mirrors, or display your creativity with a collection of small mirrors to liven up the space. A strategic arrangement of mirrors under and around candles can also generate a magical mood with their reflecting glow flickering off them.

STEP IT UP! You walk up the stairs a hundred times a day, but do they lift your mood while you’re at it, too? If not, a makeover is in order, whether by painting the risers or wallpapering them. With endless options like wood grain wallpaper, mosaic tiles or even brick stickons, this is a fairly simple job that makes a significant difference! Also, adding LED lighting to the risers can raise the entire staircase to a whole new level!

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS Replacing knobs and drawer pulls on kitchen cabinets, the bathroom vanity or even in children’s rooms is an effortless and economical way to update a look quickly, and requires no contracting knowledge or skill. Other than using a screwdriver, of course. For a more coordinated look, match the finishes between door knobs, hinges, pulls and other hardware like faucets, hooks and towel bars. Another simple way to update the knobs is by spray-painting them in the color of choice. In the same manner, you can also revamp the other hardware in the room to achieve coordination.

PICTURE-PERFECT PLACE Send the smiling faces on your walls on a mid-winter vacation. In their place, adorn your walls with updated photos and new frames. Neutral-colored snapshots and frames of natural materials, like wood, are great choices for the winter season. Here, too, painting or spray-painting is an economical way to upcycle old frames.

SNUGGLE-INDUCING SEATING With temperatures dropping below our comfort zones, that cold

110 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 3, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

surface of the leather couch just doesn’t do it. Seating options like velvet beanbag chairs, furry area rugs and even cushioned hammocks offer a sense of cozy comfort, even if just by sight. And that leather couch? Why not make use of it if it’s already there? With slipcovers available to match any style and color scheme, your sofa can be transformed as well!

TABLESCAPES When sprucing up a home, we tend not to give the tables a second thought. But whether it’s the dining room table, coffee table or even kitchen table, this piece of furniture can either make or break the look. It is, after all, the largest piece of furniture in the room! So lay out a fur runner, position a frosted vase with snow-capped branches in the center and, of course, set out some flickering candles to complete the look.

ART ROTATION Are your walls cluttered with artwork you don’t even notice anymore? It’s difficult to appreciate a piece of art you see every day, particularly when it’s framed by neighboring masterworks. Divide your painting and art collection by season: pastel colors for spring, bright colors for summer, harvest colors for the autumn season and neutral colors for winter. With less on display, each piece of art will enhance the room like never before. You’ll also notice yourself appreciating the beauty of each piece, once lost in a sea of color.

Sprucing up a home in the winter may seem daunting, if not impossible, at first. But with these few reformations, your home will be imbued with warmth, a haven against the backdrop of a frigid outdoors.

MULTIPLE-CHOICE CHALLENGE IT WAS A WASTE OF TALENT. Bracha was a smart girl with a busywork job in a construction office. She had taken the job straight out of seminary, when she had been glad to land any decent job paying above $14 an hour. A year later, she was feeling super bored and very annoyed and was wondering where her interests had gone. She originally called me to create a resume, since she had made the official decision that it was time to look for a new office job. Besides for being the only person in the office most of the day, she had little interest in the kind of work being done. She was looking for more of a social life at work, as well as work that would interest her. We spoke on the phone for a few minutes to discuss her needs and review her skills. I got a clear picture of what was going on, but

116 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 3, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

worse staying, knowing she had more to offer than construction quotes. We narrowed it down to a few jobs she had found in the classifieds section of The Monsey View, mostly administrative positions in large offices. Wanting to narrow it down even more, I asked if there were any other interests or hobbies that she had. She said that she had always been interested in health food, especially since she had been diagnosed with severe allergies as a child. Upon Bracha’s diagnosis, her mother had spent hours in the kitchen coming up with healthy alternatives. As she got older, she

I wasn’t sure I knew exactly what kind of job she wanted. Since I only like writing resumes that will likely land an interview, I have a strict policy that I don’t normally write a resume without knowing exactly what kind of job it will be used for. The problem was that Bracha didn’t either know what she was lookWe now had a better ing for. However, she did draw for employers to know what she was not looking for, so we started consider Bracha, as she there. We spoke about a had personal interest in typical day at work, and I got an idea of where her the field, which we highstrengths were. Bracha lighted on her resume. was a naturally organized person, and she worked in a very efficient way, which explained why her boss had learned more about cooking and already raised her salary twice in got more involved in preparing her the past year without being asked. own food. Bracha added that her She felt bad leaving, but felt even dream eventually was to become a

health coach to help people who suffered from severe allergies so they could enjoy food safely. As she spoke about this topic, her quieter nature livened up, and I detected the personal interest and passion she had about eating well with allergies. Once we identified Bracha’s goal of working in the health field, we were ready to take an entirely different approach to her job search. Now, in addition to interesting work in an environment where there was more of a social life, we would focus on looking for a position in the health field. This way, although Bracha wasn't trained in the field, she could learn more on the job, as well as build up her resume doing work that would help give her experience in her ultimate profession. Additionally, we now had a better draw for employers to consider Bracha, as she had personal interest in the field, which we highlighted on her resume. Now we were ready. About 24 hours later, I sent Bracha her brand-new resume. She loved seeing how great she looked on paper and was excited at her new prospects. Together, we identified three administrative positions in the field, as well as a local health coach who wasn’t officially hiring, but whom we decided to send an email to, just in case. After researching each company, I helped Bracha create a unique cover letter for each position, highlighting what she liked about their business, and why she would be a good candidate. Within a few days, she got a negative response from one, and two invitations to interview. We discussed her salary requirements and work environment before she headed off to the interviews so Bracha was fully prepared to get what she deserved. Both jobs came back to her with an offer. Now we had the excellent problem of choosing between two good jobs! We discussed pros and cons of both. One was offering slightly higher pay, but the work seemed a bit more tedious. The second offered a lower salary, but would give her a more flexible schedule where she could choose an off-day once a week if she chose to work Sundays instead. Bracha decided to go with the more flexible position, but we discussed ways she could negotiate salary by bringing up her other offer. She had an additional meeting with the company of her choice, explaining her dilemma. They were eager to hire and did not want to lose her to another offer, so they came back with the offer of a planned raise in three months if everything was satisfactory. She happily agreed to the terms, and is looking forward to starting her new job in two weeks. Shaina Keren is a Monsey-based career coach who helps people find jobs they’re good at. LOCKED IN TIME The oldest known locks, roughly 4,000 years old, are ancient Egyptian wooden bolts and their intricately designed wooden keys, which in those days were a symbol of wealth — something few could afford. Later on, ancient Romans crafted smaller and stronger locks using iron and bronze, making them light enough to be carried on one’s person. Those keys, referred to as skeleton keys, have been used for many centuries until the flat keys, which we use today, were introduced in the mid-1800s. Late 1700s and 1800s brought the inventions of double-acting tumbler locks and combination locks. Today’s locks are still based on those mechanisms, particularly time locks. The double-acting tumbler lock requires the lever to be raised to a precise height; too high or too low and the lock won’t open.

KEYED INTO OUR LANGUAGE The earliest attempts in securing doors consisted of rope knots. The most popular intricate knot, known as the “Gordian knot,” dates back to King Gordius of Phrygia, who secured the yoke of the intricately tied knot to the shaft of his chariot. Its untying was pronounced to be possible only by the man destined to conquer Asia. However, when Alexander the Great failed to undo the Gordian knot, he cut it swiftly with his sword, originating the term “to cut the Gordian Knot” — the idiom meaning to act quickly and boldly in a perplexing situation. Parts of this idiom, “Gordian” and “Gordian knot” are also commonly used to reference to an intricate problem. In Colonial America, the house key was often hung on the outside of the door. Doors were latched on the inside with a pivoted wooden bar or bolt, one end dropping into a slot in the doorpost. A string was attached and threaded through a small hole to the outside. To the visitor, the dangling string was an immediate welcome, as pulling on it raised the bolt and unlocked the door. This is the origin of our expression of hospitality, “The latch string is always out,” which means, “Come by anytime.” The term “lockout” is associated with the state of being locked out involuntarily, such as forgetting the key within the locked perimeters. By definition, lockouts are forcefully implemented by employers in the form of the temporary closing of a business or the refusal to allow employees into their workplace, essentially “locking them out.” Kind of like reverse striking, lockouts are carried out by employers in the attempt to enforce certain terms or to resist demands of employees. The most famous multi-business lockout took place in Dublin and lasted from August 1913 until January 1914!

FAMOUS LOCK-PICKERS While lock-picking is a common occurrence, one lock-picker made the headlines by picking just two locks. That may seem like no big deal until you learn the identity of this culprit: not a human but a parrot! In November of 2014, a Senegal parrot named Magic escaped from his cage while being transported. The bright green escapee is thought to have used his claws to quietly open the two padlocks on his cage, and in the opportune moment, flung the cage door open and literally flew the coop! One of the most famous lock-pickers was Harry Houdini who, during World War I, counseled the American troops on how to escape sinking ships and extricate themselves from ropes, handcuffs and other restraints in the event of capture by the Germans.

LOCKS IN NUMBERS Ever wondered how many possible combinations there are for the standard combination lock? The common combination lock, called the Simplex lock, has 1,082 possible combinations. The 5-digit dial lock has 100,000 possible combinations. The Eureka was a combination lock used for the bank vault in the U.S. Treasury Department in the 19th century. Its dial had a combination of letters and numbers with 1,073,741,824 possible combinations! Not surprisingly, lock-out calls are of the most common calls for help that Chaverim of Rockland receive. In 2017 alone, Chaverim fielded close to 3,000 such calls, of which approximately 1,200 were residential lock-outs and 1,700 auto lock-outs. A special thanks to our dedicated members!

ACROSS

No one is here. Not even footprints on the ground. Strange.

He won’t be able to escape.

We’ll catch him.

He must have thrown these pallets out the window.

We’ll call the police. They can check for fingerprints.

I succeeded in escaping. From now on, I’ll be more careful.

Careful, Avraham.

He was able to confuse us. He probably ran out the main exit.

I see a figure running. Mutty, bring me the binoculars from the clubhouse. I must identify him.

Let’s climb this tree to get a good view. Then we’ll be able to help the police identify the thief.

Recap: Gavriel distracts the security guard and children by throwing something out the window and then makes his escape through the door of the storage room.
