RE: “SAFETY ISSUES REGARDING HITCHHIKING” (ISSUE #120) Recently, there were a couple of letters with a common argument: hitchhiking is illegal in New York. I would like to post the text of the relevant New York Vehicle and Traffic law so it can be interpreted correctly: § 1157. Pedestrians soliciting rides, or business. (a) No person shall stand in a roadway for the purpose of soliciting a ride, or to solicit from or sell to an occupant of any vehicle. Definition of Roadway: § 140. Roadway. That portion of a highway improved, designed, marked, or ordinarily used for vehicular travel, exclusive of the shoulder and slope. Based on reading the plain language: A pedestrian waiting safely for a ride off the street (with exception to interstate highways) is not breaking the this law (just like soliciting business on the sidewalk is not against this law). A driver who stops safely to pick up a person wherever stopping and standing is permitted is not breaking this law. In fact, this section of the law refers to pedestrians only. Drivers were never prosecuted for assisting pedestrians in committing a hitchhiking crime. The “dina d’malchusa” argument is irrelevant here. Whoever wants to do this kind of chesed doesn’t have to be concerned about breaking the law. We also respect people who choose (for any reason) to do different kinds of chesed other than offering rides. However, it remains the burden of both the driver and the pedestrian to make sure it is done safely, knowing where and when to solicit/ offer rides and with whom they spend the ride. ary insinuates that teachers, rebbeim and bus drivers are different sorts of workers who receive a large salary. In American culture, tipping is most widely practiced in restaurants and always refers to a monetary gratuity. It is assumed that restaurant employees get paid less than minimum wage because the tips they earn will make up the majority of their income. Tips in our culture are meant to convey gratitude and are given primarily in the Chanukah and Purim season. It is not meant to supplement an income, but rather to show personal appreciation for the service performed, be it driving your child safely to school each morning or shlepping your grocery order up three flights of stairs. The decision of whether or not one should tip more regularly comes with an analysis of one’s financial means and/or one’s desire to express appreciation. But be aware of an indisputable fact: Without divulging the nature of my profession or those of family members, I can assure you that receiving a tip is greatly appreciated, no matter how high or low the receiver’s salary is. A child who hands a teacher, rebbe or bus driver an envelope containing even a small amount of money and accompanied by a gracious note will receive that extra smile from the teacher, rebbe or bus driver, and the parent will no doubt (hopefully) receive a handwritten acknowledgement. A delivery person who receives that bit of extra pocket money will just a little more willingly go all the way to your apartment in the multi-level/multi-unit housing project in which you may live. Also, since it is the child who usually hands the tip to the teacher, rebbe or bus driver, you are performing a hands-on demonstration of your appreciation to that person through your child. That is a wonderful lesson in middos tovos. One is not obligated by any law or moral code to tip. But many of us do tip, and we do so gladly. R.S.
THE END OF A SEARCH For the past eight years, I’ve been searching for that perfect cookie dough recipe for fun baking activities with my children, and I never seemed to get it right. In your past issue, my search has finally come to an end. The dough of the shaped cookies featured was smooth and soft and the kids loved working with it. RE: THE CHANGING FACE OF MONSEY’S SHOPPING DISTRICT (ISSUE #123) Kudos to you for presenting fascinating aspects of old Monsey. I would like to correct some facts. Shimon Mendlowitz’s butcher’s second location was at the present A&B Famous Fish store before they moved to Route 59 as Monsey Glatt. In addition, there was a small building on the property that is currently Horizon Court that housed Schlesinger’s grocery and then PrintO-Matic before they moved to the old bank. B.R.

What amazing hashgacha pratis! I was sitting at a bar mitzvah seudah on Sunday night, talking to a friend about some of the old-Monsey stores, and then on Wednesday your paper came out with a remembrance of these stores. I am not really part of “Old Monsey,” having moved here in 2004. However, reading the list of stores that I recognized and are no more or have moved to a different location gave me a feeling of being almost on par with my many “Old Monsey” friends! Thank you! An In-between Old- and New-Monsey Resident
I’m writing in regard to your feature on Old Monsey stores. As one of the sources of information for the article, it bothered me that at the time I was interviewed I forgot about Monsey’s very first housewares stores: Streicher’s Housewares. It was there that I picked up my entire housewares order with which to furnish my apartment as a kallah. I still remember some beautiful items that I took home. First in their garage, and later on at the location of The Atrium, this is one shop that molded some of my memories of an era long gone. A 1960s’ Kallah
We moved to Monsey in 1969, and I’d like to share information about Main Street as I remember it at that point. There was an old building on the site of 51 Main Street with apartments that had previously housed the Bais Medrash Elyon kollel families. The old shoemaker had his shop there, and Mr. Gelb’s optical store started off there too in the 1970s. When Mrs. Frank, who had her bakery at 19 Main Street, had that building demolished in the 1970s, Mr. Gelb moved across the street, and the shoemaker moved to the lower level of 17 Orchard Street in a shop facing Main Street. The Secor Street apartments and the adjacent property at the corner of Main Street were a gated-off estate. Later on, the shops you mentioned appeared when Mr. Unger of the fish store put up the building. On the site of 44 Main Street was a warehouse-type building that housed a carpet store (the proprietors lived in Regency apartments). Later, the Felberbaums’ two stores were there, and so was the Hass Seforim store. I believe the Franks from across the street renovated the building, and then the stores you mentioned moved in. When we arrived in 1969, there were four stores on 42 Main Street: Shimon Mendlowitz, Stern’s liquor store, Stern’s grocery store and Unger's Fish Store. The stores on 40 Main Street did not exist until much later. The name of the dry goods store on 39 Main Street was Lando’s Dry Goods, and there was also a women’s clothing store called Daphne Snodgrass. The two Lando doctors had offices two buildings down. The site of Shopper’s Haven and the attached part of the building on Robert Pitt was the American Tack Factory. When we moved here, 25 Main Street was a private home. ished the building. The gift shop you mentioned on 21 Main Street was Laura Saal; there were two apartments above it. From the corner of Orchard Street (17 Orchard Street: Dr. Kaplan, the dentist and an apartment upstairs. Downstairs was the non-Jewish taxi service, facing Main Street. Later, the old shoemaker moved from number 1 above) until 40 Main Street, there were a non-Jewish candy store that had an apartment upstairs, and at least two private homes with beautiful gated-in lawns (the site of the 40 Main Street shops). After the candy store closed, Mr. and Mrs. Surkis had a fabric store, Reb Shimshon Lauber had a take-out shop and later, Braun’s Juvenile Store and finally Klein’s pizza shop. On the current site of Euphoria was, in succession (from 1969), Mr. Peck, the jeweler; Mr. Gelbman’s butcher shop; and the WIC office. Where the paper goods store is today was a herring/pickle/candy store and later Main Street Travel. Quality Dry Goods Store was owned originally by the Kleins. Downstairs, where the furniture store is today, was a non-kosher catering company. Later it was doggrooming place called the Pampered Poodle, then Manies’ Ladies clothing and later still Kupath Ezra. Upstairs, where RCDC is today, there were three apartments. (RCDC was located in a small trailer on the property of 229 Maple Avenue, right near the gate of the nursing home.) On Corner Main and 59, after Grand Union was there, Grand Catalog Showroom was at that location. Later the original All Fresh Supermarket was located here, among the other stores. Waldbaum’s had relocated to corner Route 45 and Eckerson Road, and the stores at this location included Mr. Morte Cleaners and Streicher’s Housewares. Later the second floor was added for The Atrium hall. Horizon Court was built on the site of what was the FABER cement block company. Where Horizon Court meets Main Street, there was a small stone structure that housed the Monsey post office. The site where All Fresh is currently was originally Melnick’s Flooring Store. Later it was shared by Tina’s Nails and a Polish or Russian grocery. E.R.
I wanted to make note of an omission in your article on Monsey’s Shopping District. The storefront where Jewelry by Esther is currently located on 51 Main Street was where Bright View Optical had their original store. Only later did they move over to the other side of Main Street. SEVERAL WEEKS AGO, I wrote about a course we as a staff would be attending. So many of my clients have asked me how the training was that I feel like I owe it to my readers to share a few highlights. The course itself was a two-day training course where we learned to use the cognitive behavior model (CBT) in order to help our clients stay on track, overcome cravings and keep the weight off long-term. Most of the attendees were like us: mental health professionals, nutritionists and health coaches looking to supplement their training with a practical skill set. The gist of the CBT school of thought is that all of our actions are preceded by a thought process, and it is this thought process that actually causes our actions. Therefore, by tuning in to the thought process and revising our thoughts, we can have more control over our actions. This sounds simple; of course we think before we act! But in reality, a lot of times we are not tuned into our thought process, or are unknowingly allowing unhelpful or sabotaging thoughts to guide our actions. Let’s take dieting as our example. If I am on a diet, then why would I eat a sliver of cake? Just because it’s delicious? But if my goal is to lose weight, there must be more to it! Let’s analyze the thought process that takes place so quickly and subtly before we eat the cake that we may not even notice it. Maybe the thought is “I deserve this piece of cake after such a hard day,” or maybe it’s “A little bit won’t hurt… And my weigh-in is not until next week, and Basya will never know!” This exact thought allows me to eat the cake! Changing that thought process will change my behavior. So by teaching clients to respond to those thoughts in a timely fashion (before the cake enters the mouth), the thought is replaced by something more helpful. Some of the other tools we learned included teaching clients to eat slowly and mindfully, differentiating between true hunger and cravings and being more comfortable with the idea of being hungry. We

also learned tools for helping clients deal with difficult situations such as weddings, vacations and food pushers, and for teaching clients to give themselves credit where credit is due, even if they weren’t perfectly “on plan.” Learning and practicing so many new tools was one highlight of the weekend. Another really special part of the weekend was the Shabbos that followed the training. Because the seminar ended at 4:00 p.m. on Erev Shabbos (the first short Shabbos of the year!), we planned to stay in a nearby hotel for Shabbos. We rented out the entire fourth floor of the hotel, and our families met us there on Friday afternoon. Each staff member participated by cooking or bringing some items, though Tanya’s husband made the bulk of it. We ushered in Shabbos minutes after the conference ended and had an incredible Nutrition by Tanya “family” Shabbaton. Our staff is an eclectic bunch, and it was really amazing to be together for a Shabbos and meet each other’s families. At one point I looked around and realized that we had Chassidish, Moroccan, Chabad, Sephardic, Ashkenazic, Hungarian, Israeli and Russian families all in one big room, enjoying each other’s company and food. I turned to my husband and said, “Hashem must love every second of this, watching His children all get along like family.” So to answer everyone’s questions, the weekend was enlightening, fun, refreshing, inspiring and wonderful! RABBI Y. Y. RUBINSTEIN tells the incredible story of how his son’s eyesight was saved. His son had been diagnosed with an incurable condition that would lead to certain blindness. Deeply depressed about his prognosis, Rabbi Rubinstein’s son boarded a plane to Eretz Yisroel so that he could seek brachos and chizuk from gedolim. Seated beside him on the plane was an ophthalmologist who had just developed a new treatment for this exact condition — the younger Rubinstein would keep his vision after all, baruch Hashem. The story has an interesting twist. When he was learning in Gateshead, Rabbi Rubinstein had volunteered in a program to learn b’chavrusa with medical students in a nearby medical school, l’shem mitzvah. As it turned out, that ophthalmologist had been the first talmid that Rabbi Rubinstein had ever taught. The chesed that Rabbi Rubenstein had performed as a young yeshivah bachur was repaid to him decades later. Chaim Walder records a number of similar stories in his book Real Life Stories 1, published by Feldheim in 2013. In one story, a young frum girl saw that the underweight non-Jewish girl next door appeared malnourished and depressed. She took pity on her neighbor and brought the girl home to feed her every day. This went on for years. The frum girl grew up and had a son with a growth disorder that would prevent him from growing more than five feet tall. If she could get approval from a special committee of three doctors, her insurance company would pay for an expensive treatment that would enable him to grow an additional five inches. When she showed up for the meeting, it turned out that one of the three doctors was the girl she had been feeding as a child. Needless to say, the application was approved. Many years later, the chesed she had done came back to reward her. In this week’s parsha, Yaakov Avinu is supposed to marry Rachel, but Lavan deceives Yaakov and substitutes Leah in Rachel’s place. Yaakov had suspected Lavan might try something like this, so he prepared in advance a way to protect himself from deception. Chazal tell us that Yaakov had given Rachel simanim as a way of making sure that it was Rachel he married

(Bava Basra 123a). Without these simanim, Yaakov was sure to discover that his kallah was not Rachel, which would lead to humiliation for Leah. To spare her sister Leah this embarrassment, Rachel gave her the simanim and stood by silently as her sister took her own place as Yaakov’s wife. This was a chesed beyond all imagination. Many years later, Rachel found herself childless. Ultimately, Hashem granted her a child, as it is written: “Vayizkor Elokim es Rachel, vayishma eileha Elokim vayiftach es rachmah — And Hashem remembered Rachel, and Hashem heard her…” (Bereishis 30:22). Rashi cites the Midrash Tanchuma (Bereishis Rabbah 73:4) that what Hashem remembered was the chesed Rachel had performed in giving over the simanim to Leah. Years after the ultimate chesed was performed, the chesed was rewarded in an ultimate way. It says in Koheles, “Shalach lachmecha al p’nei hamayim ki v’rov hayamim timtza’enu — Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it” (Koheles 11:1). Rashi comments that a person should do chesed even for a person he does not expect to see again, because he will be rewarded after many days. Rashi brings Yisro as an example. When Moshe Rabbeinu fled Mitzrayim, he was wandering in the desert. Yisro’s daughters told him about Moshe, who said, “Kir’en lo v’ochal lachem — Call him that he should eat bread” (Shemos 2:20). Rashi explains that Yisro thought that Moshe was an Egyptian man whom he would never see again, but ultimately Moshe became Yisro’s sonin-law; he reigned over Klal Yisroel, and he brought Yisro under the wings of the Shechinah. It can be hard to push ourselves to expend our precious time, energy and money, but in the end, the ultimate beneficiary of our chesed will always be ourselves. Of course, we should always aim to do chesed without thought of reward, but this information can be used to fight the yetzer hara. The next time you have an opportunity to do chesed and the yetzer hara tells you that you can’t afford the time or effort, strengthen yourself with the knowledge that it just isn’t true. We never lose out by doing chesed.

Honda Recall Affects Nearly One Million Odyssey Owners APPROXIMATELY 900,000 Honda Odyssey minivans sold from 2011 through 2017 are being recalled by the automaker due to reports of injuries sustained by passengers who were sitting in improperly latched second-row seats of the mega-popular vehicle. Honda said they had received reports of 46 people who were injured because the seats can fall forward if they are incorrectly installed. A statement released by Honda last week advised owners of the problem, noting, “If a second-row seat is not properly latched after adjusting it side-toside or reinstalling a removed seat, the seat may tip forward during moderate to heavy braking, increasing the risk of injury
to an occupant. This issue will not occur if a seat is properly latched.” Around 800,000 of the vehicles being recalled were sold in the United States. Bloomberg News reported that Honda will begin notifying owners of the affected vehicles via mail next month as it looks into the
best way to repair the seats to prevent future problems. All of the vehicles will be fixed for free by Honda. The second-row-seat recall comes just two months after the automaker agreed to pay $484 million to settle claims that were related to recalls of defective Takata airbags. USA Today reported that Honda also recalled more than 600,000 2011 to 2016 Odysseys last year to fix a middle seat defect that had a seat release lever accidentally remaining in an unlocked position, which could increase “the risk of injury to the seat occupant,” according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Honda said that it had received no reports of injuries linked to that defect.
Governor Blasts Petition to Rename New Bridge, Calling It “Personally Hurtful” A MOVE TO RENAME the new Governor Mario M. Cuomo bridge has left his son, Governor Andrew Cuomo, feeling slighted. A petition to restore the Tappan Zee name to the bridge has garnered 75,000 signatures, reported The Journal News. The decision to dedicate the bridge in memory of the elder Governor Cuomo was passed through the state legislature in June in a matter of days, with the younger Cuomo waiving the mandatory three-day waiting period to vote on the bill, leaving many outraged by the move. “Everybody knows it as the Tap-

pan Zee Bridge,” said Port Chester resident Monroe Mann who started the petition. “Nobody understands why this happened.” Cuomo, however, said that the bridge was a fitting legacy to his father, who served as governor for a dozen years. “I think he is respected by Democrats and Republicans all across the board,” said Cuomo. “I believe it’s mean. I believe it’s vindictive. But this is the political environment we are in.” Former Governor Malcolm Wilson’s name was added to the bridge in 1994 with the support of then-
Governor Mario Cuomo, according to Democrat and Chronicle. His daughter Katherine Wilson Conroy had opposed stripping her father’s name from the bridge, suggesting that a bridge in Cuomo’s hometown of Queens might be a more appropriate tribute to Cuomo. Wilson was a Westchester resident who also represented the county in the Assembly before becoming governor. Asked to share her thoughts on the proposed name change in June, Conroy responded simply, “What can I say? It will make me very sad if this gets done.”

While not very popular in today’s world, goat’s milk has been used for centuries, not merely for consumption, but as a powerful topical solution and all-around healing potion. Over the years, as the medicinal world progressed, the popularity of goat’s milk gradually regressed, but it’s making a welcoming comeback — in our very midst!

When I had initially set out to learn about our local goat farm, I anticipated a dialogue similar to that of the standard enterprise interviews: what prompted them to launch their business, why they opted for that particular line of work, what efforts it takes to advance their business, and so forth. But what followed was unlike anything I’d expected. Like the milk they produce, this goat farm’s backstory is just as remarkable. “What made you choose this line?” I began the interview. “ Well,”

the owner shared, “I didn’t choose this line, and neither did my mother, who originally started the farm. Interestingly, it all started with the Golden Flow milk farm, owned by my grandfather R’ Zalman Gertner.” She continued, “My mother grew up surrounded by nature and loved tending to animals. While spending the summer in the mountains one year, they chanced upon a Chabad family who reared goats. My mother spent most of her spare time on the goat farm, until she had to say goodbye as summer’s end drew near.” Little did she know that this was just the beginning. “Not long after, a man came to my grandfather in search of kosher dairy formula. His child had a heart issue that required special formula, but he couldn’t find any with a heimishe hechsher. The only alternative was goat’s milk, but goat’s milk with a heimishe hechsher proved equally hard to come by. ‘Would R’ Gertner perhaps have any leads?’ The father implored. “Right time, right place, right? My grandfather had my mother arrange for goat’s milk to be sent to this child. And goat’s milk proved to be just what the child needed, and the child, baruch Hashem, thrived.” Word spread. Before long, the de-
mand was so great, it called for a new goat farm. “My father was hesitant, though,” she went on. “It’s a great chesed, but one that requires a major undertaking. He consulted with Rabbi Shmelka Taubenfeld, who shared the following story with him, originally recounted by Reb Yom Tov Ehrlich: “It was revealed to the Baal Shem Tov that in a distant village resided a man by the name of R’ Hershel Zieg, who was muchan l’olam haba. Eager to learn what merits this man had, the Baal Shem Tov set out on a journey to locate him. It proved to be no difficult task. As he entered the village, he was greeted by jeering and taunting, with the victim of the ridicule being none other than R’ Hershel Zieg. Upon his inquiries, R’ Hershel shared his life story. His wife, of blessed memory, was a noble baalas chesed. She would cook meals for the sick and elderly, distribute the meals and care for their well-being. After her passing, R’ Hershel was a distraught man who only wished to join her. One night, his late wife appeared to him in a dream and revealed to him what a beautiful place she’s in, all in the merit of her chesed. ‘I want you to merit a place here as well,’ she told him. She then instructed him to purchase some goats and distribute the milk to the ill townsfolk every day. And so he did, regardless of the taunting it brought along with it. ‘This,’ R’ Hershel explained to the Baal Shem Tov, ‘is what is earning me that place in Gan Eden.’” This was the push R’ Gertner needed, and the goat farm was launched. “It was a big struggle, and a lengthy one. But it’s a worthy struggle,” she makes sure to clarify. “We started by sending mashgichim to distant farms,

but it didn’t work very well. We needed something closer, a farm we could manage on our own. We succeeded in obtaining some farmland, first in one place, then in another. For more than twenty years, we managed our own farm. Then, at some point, my parents had to close the farm. We went back to sending mashgichim to bigger farms, and that milk was suitable for milk consumption, but for topical use, the milk must come straight from the goat. At that point, I already owned a house of my own, with a backyard that could be put to good use. We set up our backyard to accommodate some goats, and the rest of the goats were sold.” “How did you learn about goat’s milk’s topical uses?” I probed. “When my parents first established their goat farm,” she said, “it was solely for drinking purposes. And just like the backstory, the ‘goat’s milk spritzing’ also came with no prior intention.” It all started with a bad case of cellulitis. Not wanting to go down the antibiotics route, the patient called a mekubal from Eretz Yisrael who advised him to spritz goat’s milk over the infection. Since the Gertners’ goat farm was the only frum farm of its kind, he traveled to Monsey to follow through

on his mekubal’s bidding. “My mother was surprised at what seemed like an odd request,” she went on. “In her 30-plus years in the field, not once had she heard of goat’s milk’s topical benefits. She spritzed as requested, and asked him to update her on the effects. Just one hour later, the man called back to share the astonishing news. The redness had faded considerably, and the infection had nearly vanished. With an additional application the following day, the infection was gone for good. He then sent another friend with an infection of a worse degree, and the same scenario followed: two ‘spritz’ applications completely healed him.” At this point in her narrative, I’ve already learned that nothing about this goat farm had been premeditated. “And assuming this also happened unintentionally, how did your herpes treatments come about?” “When a mother called about her son’s incurable herpes, my mother reckoned that it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try, with the only alternative being to ‘wait it out.’ Having been made aware of goat’s milk’s healing powers only after more than thirty years in the field, who knew what other curative powers it had, yet unknown?” One spritz into the baby’s mouth confirmed her presumption. But goat’s milk’s anti-bacterial properties are, in fact, documented in the Gemara, in an analysis over whether it may be used on Shabbos for refuah. “And what I’m going to say next should not be omitted from the article,” she says, making one final point. “People come here saying, ‘I heard this helps,’ to which I correct them by stating, ‘Hashem helps.’ And very often, people wonder, ‘Last time it helped, so why not this time?’ or ‘It helped my friend, so why doesn’t it help me?’ to which I respond: ‘It doesn’t help; Hashem helps. And since last time you felt lost, you put in a tefillah to help this be the right shaliach. But now that you came with a sureness of yourself, with your trust in the goat, it’s no surprise that it doesn’t help; it never originally helped. WHEN WHEN ONE THINKS OF KENYA, it is rare to think of religious Jews. Surrounded by Uganda, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Somalia, Kenya is a country we associate with African wildlife, the Sahara Desert, poaching and abject poverty. Ranked as one of the most corrupt political environments in the world, Kenya is long known as a country torn asunder by war and strife, the people sandwiched between a world of debased military units and barbaric guerillas. It is a place few desire to call home, and not one that the average frum Yid thinks of traveling to. And yet, that is exactly what happened with Yenty Gelb* and her mother. “My mother was very ill with Hepatitis C and diabetes, and watching her waste away was unbearable. So when we met a man who had been virtually blind and

experienced miraculous healing in Kenya, we consulted da’as Torah and were told that we should also go, as hishtadlus toward a refuah.” It wasn’t Africa alone that held healing properties, but a man named Chaim they were headed to see. “I don’t remember his last name, but I certainly remember his story… Chaim was a secular Israeli who had gone to Africa to study sharks, up close and personal. A bit too close, in fact. A shark attacked him. His injuries were so severe that none of the doctors thought he would survive. The best prognosis the doctors would give involved survival with amputation of his leg. Hashem had other plans.” A group of tribal people whom Chaim had become close to heard about his injuries and decided that their care would surpass that of the
hospital. With undoubtable ties to guerilla forces, this group attacked the hospital while brandishing weapons, leaving doctors and patients alike quaking in fear. But it was only Chaim they wanted. “They detached him from all sorts of machinery and hoisted his bed into the air, carrying it out into the jungle. They used leeches to drain the infection from the wounds and used various herbs and plants to heal him. He survived, his leg intact. After that, Chaim decided he must learn these jungle methods of healing, and that’s what his life focus became. And that’s why we went, hoping his methods could help my mother.”
SETTLING IN The flight to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, was uneventful for Yenty and her mother, though there were no kosher food options available for the long flight. “We tried to explain to them what kashrus was, because they felt bad that we weren’t eating. We told them that we eat special foods and that in order to be kosher, they need to be double-wrapped. The airline ensured us that on the next leg of our journey, which would be on a private plane from Nairobi to Mombasa, we would have kosher food. By that time, we were very hungry and really appreciated their efforts. “We ended up not having a very full meal, but we did have a hearty laugh… Once settled on the plane, a stewardess proudly came over and announced that they had kosher food for us. She then handed me an apple and a banana — both doublewrapped in plastic!” Once landed, Yenty and her mother joined a group of five other frum people who had also come for treatment and were staying in the same hotel in Mombasa. Though the accommodations were considered decent in Kenya, they were on par with the lowest-class motel in America.

“It was decrepit. There was no furniture except for beds, and those were very, very old. The bathroom had no sink; only a shower and toilet. Nothing was well-kept.”
THE HEALING Yenty and the other Yidden tried to maintain as normal a life as possible for the month they stayed in Mombasa. There was regular davening and Shabbos and kashrus. A private mashgiach had been flown in from Eretz Yisroel to oversee food production, though the menu was limited. In general, mealtime consisted only of fruits, vegetables and eggs, as per the healer Chaim’s protocol, and once a week fishermen provided them with small fish. A thin slice of watermelon was allowed for each of the patients once a day, and garlic was a staple at every meal. Chopped into small bits, garlic — known for its incredible healing properties — was eaten raw, in abundance. “We were on springs!” Yenty told me. “I wasn’t a patient, so I ate some other things as well, but we all felt so good on this diet. I needed less sleep and I just felt so healthy.”
The diet wasn’t the mainstay of the healing, though. “Chaim would stay up all night, brewing and blending different concoctions for each patient, according to whatever condition he was trying to treat. Each patient drank a half cup of their special mixture three times a day. Even now I am not sure what herbs or plants were used, but I do know that they helped!” One woman, she tells me, had arrived from Eretz Yisroel bound
to her wheelchair through paralysis. By the time the trip was over, the woman was both walking and swimming — activities no doctor had ever hoped she would do! “Was everyone helped?” I query. “Yes,” Yenty says, and then starts laughing. “Except for one person, a diabetic. There were several diabetics, including my mother, who had come on the trip. Everyone was doing fantastically, and even the yellowish skin color caused by the Hepatitis C that plagued my mother had faded. But one woman was not responding to treatment. Her diabetes was still out of control. ‘It can’t be that you are not doing well if you’re following my protocol,’ Chaim insisted. ‘I have never had a patient who didn’t improve!’ “One day Chaim sent two nurses to the woman’s room to search for contraband, and they found stashes of cookies and chocolate! The woman was self-sabotaging! She ended up going home and not benefitting due to her inability to control herself.” Everyone else was helped — while they were there, at least. “My mother was cautioned by Chaim that she must always go to sleep by 10:30 p.m. in order to give her body the strength it needed to

continue fighting, but our family situation was unique and the dynamics never allowed for that. I didn’t follow up with any of the other people who had been there, so I am not sure if the effects were long-lasting, but there certainly was a good deal of refuah while we were all there.”
BEYOND THE HOTEL WALLS Outside the hotel the view was breathtaking, and the Yidden had plenty of time to explore. An exquisite frontrow seat to the Indian Ocean was the reward for staying in Mombasa. “The ocean was so beautiful and the sand amazingly delicious to walk upon. And the water was constantly changing; one day, the water would be right next to the hotel, and other days, the water could be more than a mile out, leaving all sorts of lovely shells lying on the beach. On one of those days, everyone in our group decided to collect these shells and take them home to our families. A few days later, though, there was horrific smell in my room, and it took me a while to trace it down to the bag containing the shells. We didn’t realize that sea creatures had still been living inside and rotted away when removed from the water!” The group had a different opportunity to collect shells (this time creatureless!) when the captain of the glassbottomed boat they went on offered to dive down to the bottom of a shallow part of the ocean and bring up sea conches for $10 a piece. “A huge, gorgeous pink conch is sitting in my china

Despite the beauty of the ocean, Mombasa was a depressing sight to see. “All of the people were skeletal, and hundreds of people lined the streets every day, sitting and doing nothing, hoping for a bit of food. One little boy of about five or six approached me and stuck out his hand. I assumed he wanted money and gave him a nickel, but he shook his head and signed that he wanted food. At that moment, I had nothing to give him. My heart broke for him, especially when it was explained to me that the boy’s severely bloated stomach was actually distension, a condition caused when fluids fill up the abdomen due to extreme lack of nutrients.” It wasn’t just the children. “Everyone was so poor, so hungry! The captain who brought up the conches for us took us on the boat for a few hours one day, and I was hungry, so I pulled out an Ostreicher’s cookie to eat.” Yenty tells me, “I offered one to the captain. He put it aside, and for a long time did not touch it. ‘Why don’t you eat the cookie?’ I eventually asked him. ‘I’m saving it for my family,’ he told me, ‘so they can all share it.’ I gave him the whole bag! “We just don’t know how fortunate we are. There are people suffering so terribly around the world. You can’t imagine it until you see it. And when you see it, you have to wonder why the United Nations and other relief organizations are not doing more to help these people. Most people don’t even own a pair of shoes!” Even in the face of abject poverty, there were pockets of wealth. Yenty discovered this when she planned a trip to a jewelry store to
A QUICK LOOK AT KENYA • English and Swahili are the official languages of Kenya, but there are dozens more languages spoken across the country. • Kenya is comparable to the size of Texas. • Kenya is home to grasslands, beaches, mountains and a jungle. • Natives of Kenya are either below the poverty line or exceedingly rich. There is no middle class. • More than half of the country lives in poverty, starving on a daily basis. Most tourists rarely see this side of Kenya, as there are tourist pockets fit for kings. One area in Mombasa has opulent villas, resorts, shopping centers and upscale restaurants. • Tourist love to safari in Kenya’s grasslands where they can see lions, water buffalo, giraffes, elephants, cheetahs and other African wildlife. The tourist industry brings in hundreds of millions of dollars every year. • Elephant hunting, which was once a major “sport,” was outlawed in 1973, but poachers (those who kill animals illegally) still hunt the animals to obtain their tusks, which are made of ivory and sell well on the black market. The government has special units that monitor the grasslands, trying to prevent poachers from killing more animals. • Certain areas of water near the Mombasa shore are shark-infested. A local slaughterhouse exacerbates the issue by tossing all their rotten meat into the ocean, inviting sharks to feast there. • Most Kenyans are well-educated and intelligent, even those who live in poverty. Schooling is free, though many children cannot attend as they must work to help support their families. • Many Kenyans can even read Hebrew and carry Jewish names like Esther, Yosef and Neshama… There has been speculation that certain African tribes may be descendants of the lost tribes of Israel. • Nairobi is home to the only shul in Kenya. • Diseases run rampant in Kenya. In order to visit from the U.S., the government recommends a minimum of eight different immunizations to prevent contracting diseases common in Kenya. • In Kenya, most people sleep under a mosquito net as a safety measure against diseases that can be contracted through mosquito bites. • Mombasa was once a main port for the slave trade. A local bell was used to warn the locals whenever a slave ship entered the port, urging them to flee. The bell is still standing today. • Hundreds of thousands of refugees have recently flooded Kenya in the effort to escape ISIS and other forms of civil unrest. No longer as dangerous as in the past, Kenya is seen as a relatively stable region of Africa. • Though the government of Kenya is called a republic, it is still full of corruption. The Kenyan Army has been accused of kidnapping children to be used as soldiers, and there have been horrific ethnic massacres under the hands of the government as recently as the mid-1980s. • Bribery is exceedingly common. People can be convicted of crimes with no evidence and released with the giving of bribes. • There is no government-run transportation in the country. • Kenya has the highest rate of traffic collisions in the world, topping the list with 510 fatal crashes per 100,000 vehicles in 2004. • It is still common to give a dowry in Kenya. Dowries start at ten cows.

buy a gift for her son’s kallah. There, a diamond necklace cost $2,000 — far more than many locals would ever see in their lifetime. “There clearly were some rich people, but they were nowhere to be seen. Far away on a hill there was a magnificent house that locals were not allowed to approach due to it belonging to a rich person. They thought we were rich people, too.” Yenty chuckles. “A woman who worked in the hotel told me, ‘You rich people,’ in a conversation one day. ‘But we’re not!’ I protested. ‘My mother is sick, so we had to come,’ I told her. “‘Yes, you rich people,’ she continued to insist. ‘We poor people. We get sick, we die. Not like you,’ she said. When I insisted that Kenyans were blessed with hospitals, she looked at me with pain in her eyes. ‘The hospital isn’t for us poor people, it is only for the army.’” The suffering is of such epic proportions in Mombasa that Yenty was not allowed to leave the hotel grounds unless accompanied by a security force. “Many of the people are cannibals,” she says, shuddering, “due to either tradition or extreme hunger. Mombasa is a dangerous place to venture out into alone. I saw that myself when I was out once and took a picture of a local man. He became very upset, because as I later learned, some of the locals believe that if their picture is taken they will die. He lunged at me, but baruch Hashem, the security detail took us away. I did, however, lose several rolls of film to angry police officers whom I also feared would have harmed me had I not complied.” Fear was everywhere. Hunger, danger and fear. Yet it was there in Kenya, amid a world of corruption and poverty, that Hashem chose to hide his healing, allowing the group of Yidden to experience a reprieve from suffering and an enhancement in health that they’d never had elsewhere. Because if Hashem so wills it, the cure can be found in even the most hopeless of places and at the most hopeless of moments. Yeshuas Hashem k’heref ayin. *Name has been changed to protect privacy.

These world class mechanchim all shared the realization they were given an exceptional gift--the ability to teach and ensure the mesorah-the lifeblood of our people. While I don't for a second delude myself into thinking I’m in their league--or that what we do on stage compares to what they do in the classroom, I DID understand how and why they valued their very special gifts--because I’ve B’H seen the effect our “chinuch method” has had on children and vis a vis that, their families. I’ve seen parents who had no interest in Shabbos or kosher ultimately begin to observe Shabbos and Kashrus because they wanted to make their child who heard our songs about Keeping Shabbos and Kosher to be happy. to make our live shows about--to take the kesher that begins with the album and build on it when we’re in concert--as that’s an environment that lets you connect with children--and their families on a way more authentic and personal level. That’s why we chose to call it Uncle Moishy World because we’re planning to populate it with content from all parts of the “world” that Uncle Moishy has created for over 3 generations of children” explained Chesky who added that most of the site’s content was inspired by Moishy himself. “He told us, the #1 question he gets from children after concerts is “When are you coming back?” --straight to the point-the way the age group that makes up his fan base tends to be. Moishe’s vision for the site was in effect a 24/6 “answer” to that very question--a place where children could experience “the next best thing to Uncle Moishy actually being there”. Moishy explained that because a child’s imagination is an amazing entity, rather than limit it we want this site to be both a source and resource -- a source of fun and kosher interactive entertainment for children and a resource that parents and adult family members can use to help their children appreciate the “basics” of our people and faith--Hashem, Shabbos, Kosher, our Jewish Holidays, Mitzvos, etc.” To ensure that the site will be “all that-and then some” the group engaged the services of an award winning, Hollywood animation artist/cartoonist to execute it. “Of course, it will also provide ‘product and performance’ related content” added

WHAT WAS SEFER HAREFUOS? Who wrote it and why was it hidden? The Mishnah in Pesachim (4:9) tells us that Chizkiyahu Hamelech hid away a book called Sefer Harefuos – the Book of Remedies. According to the Ramban (Introduction, Commentary to the Torah), this volume was written by Shlomo Hamelech. Shlomo’s comprehensive Torah knowledge gave him great insight into all branches of natural science. Sefer Harefuos was a compendium of effective medicines, which the Ramban implies were herbal. Rashba writes that some of these remedies were naturally effective, while others were based on halachically permitted segulos (see Orach Chaim 301:27). Although its use was permitted, Chizkiyahu had the Sefer Harefuos hidden because people were relying on it instead of turning to Hashem with tefillah and teshuvah when they became sick. (Rashi, Berachos 10b and Pesachim 56a; Teshuvos HaRashba 1:413) Another tradition regarding the origin of Sefer Harefuos is cited in Tashbatz Katan. According to this tradition, when Noach was in the teivah, he became sick. A malach taught one of Noach’s sons many things about healing, and the son wrote the Sefer Harefuos based on this information. Presumably, Chizkiyahu’s reason for concealing the sefer, according to this view, was the same as according to the Ramban. The Rambam (Peirush Hamishnayos Pesachim 4:9) vehemently disagrees with the suggestion that Chizkiyahu would have outlawed a valid medical resource. Instead, he writes that Sefer Harefuos was a book of witchcraft, based on astrology, which was certainly not written by Shlomo Hamelech. According to the Rambam, it was banned because its use was halachically forbidden.

Disclaimer: The following parable is in no way intended to represent a course of action to be followed in our times! IT WAS ONE OF THOSE DAYS when Yosef seemed to get up on the wrong side of bed. Literally. As he was arising, he scraped his hand on a rusty nail. “Uh-oh, I’ve gotta go to the doctor,” he said to himself. He arrived at the local medical facility, only to find it closed. Vaguely, he saw someone handing out what looked like copies of Tehillim. “Strange,” he thought. He traveled on to the hospital and found the place in chaos. Doctors, nurses and patients were streaming out. It looked like the whole place was shutting down. “What on earth is going on here?” he demanded. Out of the corner of his eye, Yosef noticed a large “for sale” sign going up on the hospital building. Incredulous, he asked a passing doctor for an explanation. “Sorry, no time to talk,” the fellow responded. “I’m rushing to find a new job.” “Wait! Don’t you see my bleeding hand?” Yosef pleaded. “It needs urgent attention! Why is the hospital shutting down all of a sudden?” The doctor turned to him. “You didn’t hear the
news? King Chizkiyahu has shut down the entire medical profession! He’s ordered all copies of Sefer Harefuos concealed!1 Without it, there’s nothing for us doctors to do! What you have to do, my friend, is make a cheshbon hanefesh. Go to a navi for help. Do teshuvah for the aveirah that caused your injury, and Hashem will do the rest! Now, I’ve got to rush. Refuah sheleimah, my friend, and remember to daven and give tzedakah, too!” Yosef pinched himself. It had really happened. The Sefer Harefuos was no more. For as long as anyone could remember, whatever was wrong with a person, from minor ailment to life-threatening malady, was healed by the Sefer Harefuos, which told doctors whatever they needed to know. Almost no one davened for cholim these days. That comprehensive medical guide, written by none less than Shlomo Hamelech, was the key to health and healing, and it really worked. Yosef, his hand throbbing, started to think. In the distance he saw a well-respected navi. He approached the great man, and before he could open his mouth, the navi spoke. “The hand that withholds tzedakah will be sorely hurt!” The navi gave him a piercing look and turned away. “Yes, of course!” exclaimed Yosef. “Yesterday I used my now-injured hand to wave away a poor man who was bothering me for tzedakah! Oy! How could I have treated him like that? Ribono Shel Olam! Let me find that poor Yid, and I will beg him for mechilah! And please, heal my hand, and don’t let me get sick from the rusty nail!” Yosef paused. “It feels good to be reminded that Hashem is the One Who brings sickness and healing,” he reflected. On his way home, Yosef suddenly jerked his wagon to a halt. There he was! Yankel! That poor Yid! Quickly, Yosef alighted on the road and threw

himself at the startled Yankel’s feet. “Please. Forgive me for how I treated you,” Yosef implored. “How could I have ignored you in your hour of need? Hashem has taught me a lesson. Here, take this gold coin, and allow me to take you home.” As Yankel climbed into Yosef’s plush vehicle, he forgave him with all his heart. Nearing home, Yosef glanced at his hand. It wasn’t throbbing any more. Amazing! It had completely healed! ACCORDING TO RASHI2 and the Rashba3, this story perhaps represents the scale of the revolution prompted by Chizkiyahu Hamelech when he concealed Sefer Harefuos. As the Ramban writes4, when Klal Yisroel resided in their land when there was nevuah, the way to address sickness was to seek Hashem through His nevi’im. There was no place for doctors in the house of those who fulfilled Hashem’s will! The entire purpose of sickness is to awaken people to teshuvah. When Chizkiyahu saw that Sefer Harefuos was an impediment to teshuvah, he banned it, and the Sages of the day agreed with him. According to this version of events, what happened in the times of Chizkiyahu has little bearing on our lives today. We absolutely must seek qualified medical help when the need arises, and it is

a great sin not to do so. Chizkiyahu was only able to take that drastic step when Klal Yisroel was at the pinnacle of spirituality. Teshuvos Tzitz Eliezer writes5 that even many centuries ago, the Ramban referred only to the greatest of the great when he wrote that doctors have no place in the house of those who fulfill Hashem’s will. The biggest proof is that the Ramban himself was a doctor! Obviously, he was of the opinion that it was correct for people to use his services! What we can learn from this is how important it is to daven to Hashem when someone is unwell, lo aleinu. We do not have nevi’im to tell us exactly what we need to rectify, and our rabbanim can guide us on how to respond spiritually at such times. But that is no alternative to consulting a doctor and doing whatever is medically required. The Rambam has a completely different opinion as to what the Sefer Harefuos was and why it was banned. The Rambam, who was also a doctor, wrote6 that making appropriate use of medicine is just like consuming food and drink. It is inconceivable, he writes, that Chizkiyahu would have prevented the use of proper medicine. What that great king was fighting was witchcraft, he explains. Sefer Harefuos was a book of sorcery, which the Torah strictly forbids. This book was banned as part of Chizkiyahu’s program of strengthening Torah observance and distancing Am Yisroel from idolatry and its rituals. However we understand what the Sefer Harefuos was and why it was concealed, it is clear that we must avail ourselves of medical expertise when necessary, and turn to Hashem in tefillah for all our needs.

ANNUAL SATMAR BIKUR CHOLIM OF MONSEY EVENT COMING UP It’s a cause that needs no explanation! For who in the greater Monsey community hasn’t heard of this renowned tzedakah! Satmar Bikur Cholim of Monsey, founded over a decade ago is modeled after the memory of the legendary paragon of Chesed, Rebetzin Alta Feige Teitelbaum O”H It has been dubbed “one long chain of “Ahavas Chesed and Kiddush Hashem”. Devoted and selfless Satmar Bikur Cholim volunteers bring hot, nourishing meals daily to all major hospitals throughout New York and New Jersey and so much more. By far, the most vital service that Satmar Bikur Cholim provides is financial assistance to cover the staggering cost of medical insurance, doctor and hospital bills, distributed to families facing a crisis. Kipmeturins who are unable to afford a convalescent home are sent to recover for a few days, enabling them to continue caring for their kinderlach. Families in crisis are given therapy and support,
enabling them to survive—and thrive. Every dollar received in donations is spent exclusively to help local patients and their families keep their heads above water. THE KOSHERFEST BUZZ WAS IN the air. I was on my way into what is known as “the world’s biggest kiddush,” and outside the Meadowlands Exposition Center, there was no question of where to go. All I had to do was follow the streams of heimishe-looking people heading in one direction. At the entrance, I showed my ID, received my badge and entered the Meadowlands-turned-kosher-food-wonderland. Inside, there were rows and rows of booths, and wherever I looked there were people and food. The floor was a hub of excitement and action where I found popular vendors proudly introducing new products and some new companies seeking to break into the kosher food

market. There were Israeli companies trying to tempt U.S. buyers, and I noticed many international companies, from Peru to the Philippines and everything in between, trying to bring their products to U.S. stores as well. I overheard buyers inquiring about products, asking questions about everything from shelf life to the amount of units in a case, and company representatives answering. Then came the shaking of hands, and deals were closed right there on the floor. I noticed that many products featured were healthier versions of existing products. KJ Poultry, for example, proudly displayed their new line of preservative-, MSG- and hormone-free (and guilt-free!) cold
cuts, chicken liver, chicken drumsticks and thighs. They even introduced fat-free turkey and chicken cold cuts, in both smoked and regular flavors, as well as chicken and turkey franks with no MSG or hormones, which are also very low in fat. Bethel Farms by Pelleh displayed their new organic dairy line, where they also introduced a variety of healthy products. Their milk, which is used in their products, contains higher levels of calcium, protein, beta-carotene (a precursor of Vitamin A), Vitamin E, omega-3 and antioxidants than conventional milk since their cows spend so much time in the sun and feed on organic grass and hay. Their organic, whole-
milk Greek yogurts contain no preservatives or binders and are an excellent source of protein and probiotics. They come in a variety of flavors, and I chose the Maple Syrup one to taste. It was creamy and delicious and has exactly two ingredients: whole milk and maple syrup! They also featured whole milk lebens in three flavors. My takeaway? Bethel Farms’ ingredients are organic and super clean, and I would definitely use their products to introduce a baby to dairy foods. Norman’s booth was a hive of activity, and with good reason! On display were their Greek I.Q. yogurts in mess-free squeezable pouches. They’re convenient, healthy and kids love them! Their two newest Lite Greek yogurt flavors, Pomegranate and Tiramisu (yum!) were also available for tasting. But Norman’s biggest unveiling was their brand-new Creme Greek Yogurt Desserts. This dessert product is a completely brand-new concept in yogurts. It’s thick and creamy and tastes like a piece of cheesecake (are you drooling yet?), but has the health benefits of probiotics. It comes in five delicious flavors: Vanilla Bean, Sweet Strawberry, Morello Cherry, Dulce De Leche and Mocha Latte. And you can’t go wrong with any of them; they are beyond fabulous. The proof? Brocha Kimmel, product demonstrator, told me that she had to place a strict one-per-person limit because people were shoving piles of the dessert into their bags. KosherCo Pure Food by Estee was another beautiful booth with delicious, clean products. Estee creates products that are good and easy for you to use. Her individually wrapped cookies come in three flavors and are tasty, convenient and nut-free. Her new marinade and glaze sauces also come in three flavors: white wine, red wine and ultimate brisket. They do not contain any preservatives, and every ingredient is recognizable. They will be in stores in six to eight weeks, and I’m looking forward to trying them. Drink Oxigen displayed their Oxigen Water and Oxigen Shot. These oxygenated products are said to improve endurance and stamina, speed up recovery time, lead to greater mental clarity and aid in jet lag recovery. They claim their water is equivalent to 10 minutes of breathing time and their shot to 50 minutes of breathing time. If you ever try either, let me know how it went… It’s wonderful to see companies picking up on the trends of healthy eating and stepping up to fill the need. Liebers came out with coconut cream and coconut milk, and Lebonne displayed their new coconut oil. I was excited to see these products with heimishe hashgachos. And have you heard of riced cauliflower? It’s all the rage now, and you don’t have to spend time making it yourself. Heaven and Earth’s frozen Organic Riced Cauliflower is now available and has the hashgacha of the OK and Rabbi Eckstein. There were also some new cookbooks on display that contain recipes using healthy ingredients. I noticed The Whole Foods from the popular Levana Kirschenbaum and The Healthy Jewish Kitchen by Paula Shoyer. Nature’s Cure booth featured a huge variety of vitamins and remedies made from natural ingredients, including an extremely effective protocol for healing MRSA. Their focus is clearing each issue completely by tackling the root of the problem and strengthening the body, and they shared amazing stories with me about clients who were helped and healed. Their newest products are teething oil and Nature’s Miracle baby pow-

der for diaper rashes. For the growing customer base seeking gluten-free products, The Gluten-Free Artisan had their glutenfree challah displayed in five flavors, including their newest one, chocolate chip challah. Their challah is hamotzi, so people on a gluten-free diet can wash on Shabbos. The owner of the company is a woman with celiac, who after fruitlessly searching for the ideal gluten-free bread, set out to create her own. I tried them, and yes, they are soft and delicious. I especially loved the Onion Flake Challah. You can find them in the freezer section of your local grocery. I also tasted glutenfree and kosher for Pesach pizza from Eytan’s, not yet available in the U.S., and it was surprisingly tasty! Another new gluten-free product featured was lasagne pasta from Gefen. As the hours passed, I wandered from booth to booth, imbibing this extraordinary experience and exploring the world of the kosher food industry. What an interesting day this was! This was my chance. The time was ripe to get started at putting my dream of opening a professional daycare into action. I was ready to have the best of both worlds: spend every moment of the day with my beautiful new baby, and hold down a full-time job. I wanted to create the environment I had dreamed of for my own children, and give working parents the ability to go to work without worry.
I DOVE INTO THE CHALLENGE, finding out what the legal requirements were, filing necessary paperwork, planning curricula, purchasing toys and supplies and hiring assistants. Finally, a few months after my son’s arrival, the daycare was born. I loved the challenge of creating my vision and worked hard to structure the days so the kids could work on developmentally appropriate milestones through play. I provided a full-time schedule, hot meals and a check-in system where parents could get updates throughout the day (e.g., Chaim had 4 ounces at 1:00

p.m., a nap from 1:45–3:05). No one would worry the way I did, wondering if their child was hungry, tired or getting enough love. A huge side benefit that I had not anticipated was how much I loved being my own boss. If I had ever worried that I was lazy, unmotivated or not serious enough, I proved myself wrong every day, learning another powerful lesson: When I was not being forced to do something that I didn’t agree with or understand, I was the most active, hardworking employee I could ever wish to have. (That’s another perk to my personal-
ity type. If you’re an INTJ, you know what I’m talking about…) Self-motivation was more powerful than any boss’s dirty looks. But then, as soon I was comfortably established for a while with a great routine and a nice reputation, that niggling little entrepreneur in my head got right back to work. Not a moment’s rest. The conversation in my head went something like this: “You’ve got this figured out. Mission accomplished. What’s next?” “What’s wrong? Isn’t this enough? I’m self-employed, doing what I love, working 9 to 5, and I’m a full-time mom, thank you very much.” “Yeah, but aren’t you getting a little bored of doing the same thing every day? It’s great that kids thrive on routine, but I don’t think the same is true for you. You thrive on challenges. The challenging part of this is over. Admit it.” Okay, I’ll admit it to you all. I was bored. But what right did I have to feel bored? Wasn’t this my dream job? There were so many parts of running a daycare that I absolutely loved and couldn’t imagine giving up. Considering my personal profile, it wasn’t hard to arrive at the conclusion that what was missing in my day was intellectual work. I like new challenges, being forced to think
quickly and learn new things. Writing resumes filled all those requirements, so I expanded my side hobby into a real side job. It was something fun to look forward to at the end of the day, and nothing felt better than hearing from clients that as soon as they sent out their resume, they got called in for interviews. To me, every resume is a masterpiece, a written portrait of the individual. My goal is for the client to fall in love with themselves on paper. (Obviously, the hiring manager too…) There was only one little problem that started coming up, again and again. My first questions to someone who called to discuss a resume are: “What kind of job are looking for? Do you have a specific job in mind?” The problem is when the answer is, “I’m not sure… I have a few ideas. I can go in a few directions… I’d like a general resume to send out to a few jobs I noticed,” I apologize and explain that I only write resumes that I believe have a strong chance of getting a person a job. My homework for them is to call me back when they have three jobs in the classifieds that they would like to get. To me, writing a resume without a goal would be like selling a car without an engine. It isn’t going to get you too far. Wanting to help people come up with clear goals of what kind of job they would enjoy, I spent a lot of time on the phone with clients, trying to provide direction based on the person’s interests, ideas and dreams. I didn’t want to leave people without any solution. And even worse, if they found a job to write a resume for, that still didn’t mean that they wouldn’t hate the job. I realized that it wasn’t enough to help people just find jobs; I wanted to help people find jobs that they loved. I had basic knowledge and fascination of personality types and the psychology of work-fit, but it clearly wasn’t enough, so I searched for a solution. I researched many options for career coach training. After nixing a few programs, I struck gold. I found a program that
provided high-level career coach training that, in my opinion, put all the others to shame. My apprehension at the cost of training quickly disappeared after my first in-depth assessment with my Senior Coach. In fact, I couldn’t believe that money could buy such happiness. After an analysis of my specific skills and cognitive abilities, I was left with the most comprehensive and validating evidence of my own skills. All my habits, interests and even relationships made sense. I got right back to work, offering testing and consultations for people who needed help deciding on a career, as well as people with years of experience who just didn’t love going to work. It was thrilling to see each person’s reaction at the end of every session. It was like all the times they thought there was something wrong with them, or worried that maybe they just weren’t talented, faded away, leaving a sense of power, mission and self-confidence in their natural abilities. Finally, I had the golden keys to a lifetime of happiness at work. As for me, I felt like I finally found what I’ve been searching for. I realized that although childcare is one of my passions, there are parts of it that are best done by someone else. I hired more staff that do a better job than I could running the daily activities, which gives me a break during the day and lets me focus on the parts of childcare that I excel in. I get the intellectual stimulation from my work as a career coach, and it satisfies my needs to use my other skills on a regular basis. The work-life balance is said to be a myth. That’s the myth. I believe that there is an individual way for every person to find a place where their talents are utilized, so that work, play, family and life itself all blend to sustain each other with the happiness that comes when someone is truly living their purpose. WHEN NO MEANS NO “A TINKLER, A TAILOR, a soldier, a sailor… Lilly over the valley number one…” These sound like ancient jump rope songs, but if your kids are anything like mine, they already think you were born in the late 1800s to early 1900s, right? (“Ma, were you happy when they invented cars and

ice cream? I don’t know how you lived without them!”) My kids say they were born in the 21st century and never cease to remind me that I was not. Therefore, they sometimes feel they know how to parent themselves better than the parents they woke up to find themselves related to.
My kids are strong. And they outnumber me by a lot! All those great opinions on how I should be mothering them can sometimes cause me to doubt myself. Then I snap back into reality and thank Hashem for giving these wonderful neshamos a healthy, strong mother: me! Yes, I have it inside me to learn what is right for my family and to stick to it even when the milk spills or the kid tantrums. The most important lessons I can teach my young ones are boundaries and firmness. Solid rules give children a sense of security. They know where they belong, what they should be doing and at what time. They grow a spine and gain confidence that carries over into their lives in every area. Knowing this gives me the reassurance that makes it possible for me to
stand my ground even during the most difficult time. My child can be crying that it’s so silly and unfair that I’m not allowing her to meet the neighbors at a certain event. When I tell her in a gentle voice and loving way that the kashrus standards of that event do not match our family’s principles, I am giving her something to lean on forever. She will get the message that she is a bas melech and will eventually want to act accordingly.
After all, you won’t find a rav or gadol near anything questionable. It’s simply beneath them. I don’t punish my children with the word “no.” I give them the greatest opportunity of elevating themselves and pushing higher and searching for better. Every time they want to do something and don’t, their selfcontrol muscle grows stronger. A chelek of Hashem is always inside them. It may be dusty from disuse, but it is always theirs for the taking. I’m just teaching them that not everything that glitters is gold. I teach them not to get blindsided by the fifty-cent shiny knockoffs and only to hold out for the real diamonds. When my children sense I’m being wishy-washy and say, “Yes, no, maybe so, I’m not sure, I don’t know…” their kid alarm goes off and flashes “Unsafe! Unsafe!” (“But, Mommy, it’s not fair, Adam and Chava didn’t need a mommy and a tatty! I can also do what I want!” “Yes, sweetie, you’re right, but everyone after that was not so lucky. Hashem gave all the rest of us mothers and fathers to teach us and to love us and to be strong for their kinderlach. I am so happy to be your mother!”) I can fake it until I make it. It’s okay if on the inside I am fearful of putting my foot down. On the outside I take a deep breath and speak firmly the truth I believe in. “We take a shower before bed.” Or, “Henny, we don’t talk to strangers.” When a child asks me a question, I can either let him know that I am taking time to think about it, or, if I have an answer ready, that it is not negotiable. I don’t want to teach my son that Mommy is unsure of her final answer. Sometimes my kids think if I say “no” it means “ask

Until I turn a lovely shade of purple or change my answer to “yes,” whichever comes first. No one has to be on my page: not my mother-in-law, cousin or former mailman. THE BIGGEST GIFT I can give my family is a strong and stable mommy for my kids to lean against. They want to know that they can push and I will be there to hold them upright, steady and firm. My embrace doesn’t waver; my morals don’t fall over like a garbage can in the wind. They may think they would prefer a mother who allows ice cream for breakfast or believes in a “No bedtimes” or “School is optional” policy. But really, they are asking me whether I will be there to catch them if they ever fall off a cliff. I want to be there even earlier. I want to build gates and safety zones so my children never find themselves without love or protection. They may kick and scream against the barrier, but deep down, I know they are holding on tight and are grateful for the safe haven we call home.

MILK THROUGH THE AGES The practice of milk delivery to homes began in the late 1700s, but it took decades until the milkmen had it down to an art. The first milkmen would make deliveries in horse-drawn wagons or carts and fill customers’ jugs straight from their churns, and only much later, in 1880, were the first glass bottles patented. Bottles would either have the name of the dairy they belonged to embossed on the side, or they would have an easily identifiable shape so they could easily find their way back to the dairy they came from. Milkmen would make their rounds each morning, dropping glass bottles of An American milkman with a delivery New Orleans milk cart milk at the homes of their wagon, 1925 customers, who’d be expected to rinse the previous day’s bottles and leave them at the doorstep for collection. In the 1950s, after World War II, the growing popularity of supermarkets and refrigerators meant the steady decline of home milk deliveries, and thus ended the era of the milkman.

Before the advent of milking machines in 1894, farmers milked about six cows each hour. Today, the average dairy farmer milks more than 100 cows an hour.
A single cow produces an average of 90 glasses of milk each day, which means a yield of approximately 200,000 glasses in a lifetime!
It takes about 10 pounds of milk to produce a pound of cheese, 21 pounds of milk to produce a pound of butter and 12 pounds of milk to make a gallon of ice cream. In many areas in the U.S., a gallon of milk costs more than gasoline.

Whole milk, or regular milk, contains 3.25% fat, while low-fat milk has only 1% fat. Skim milk, in contrast, contains only 0 to 0.5% fat.

Milk is naturally the most nutrient-rich drink in the world. Despite its thicker texture, 85 to 95 percent of it is water, and the rest of its volume is comprised of vitamins, proteins, carbs and fat. This is why drinking milk is so important for children, whose growing skeletal systems need all the nutrients milk has to offer.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends whole milk for toddlers between one and two years of age because healthy fats are critical for a child’s developing brain and nervous system. Only toddlers who are at risk of becoming obese should drink low-fat milk. Goat’s milk is becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason! Goat’s milk is easier for your body to digest; has fewer allergenic proteins; and is also lower in lactose, or milk sugars, than cow’s milk, which means it’s a great choice for people who are slightly lactose intolerant.
