I was so happy to see the recently added “Expanding Communities” segment in The Monsey View. Two neighborhoods that I noticed were not included are Nanuet (Newport Drive area, which is adjacent to Dexter Park) and Pearl River (the part on the border of New Jersey). Both of these neighborhoods have popped up recently and I personally know families who have either moved or are currently looking to move to both of these areas. As a long-time resident of Monsey, I still marvel at the development and rapid growth of all of these new Jewish neighborhoods. May we continue to grow and grow! A Happy Monsey Resident
AT HOME IN TURTLE BOO Now between day camp and school, we decided to treat our families to a day at Turtle Boo. The kids had a great time and it was a very lovely way to spend their vacation. When we were waiting around for an available table at the food court (many of us Monsey mothers had the same idea of how to spend the day!), and the children were complaining of hunger, the owner passed by, and upon seeing that we had nowhere to sit, he summoned a few workers and set up a party room so we can comfortably feed our broods. We were so impressed with this service and at the way Turtle Boo makes sure that the visit is comfortable in every aspect. We can’t wait to go back! Monsey Mothers

WORKING TOGETHER TOWARD A SAFER COMMUNITY Dear Community. Every day I take the short walk from my home to my son’s daycare. My route passes the intersection on Route 59. Hardly a day goes by without my witnessing or even experiencing a near accident, and sometimes, unfortunately, a few accidents, and always for the same four reasons. Drivers and pedestrians please be cautious regarding: 1. Crosswalks: At the Route 59/Remsen intersection there is a crosswalk with a pedestrian signal, giving pedestrians the opportunity to cross highway 59. However, drivers turning onto Route 59 (from Remsen and South Remsen) seem to have forgotten the laws. When pedestrians are on the crosswalk or about to enter the crosswalk, we have the right of way, meaning that, by law, you need to yield (slow down), wait until the pedestrian has crossed, at least past the lane you are trying to turn into, and only then can you turn. However, drivers have forgotten that turning without looking to see if there is a pedestrian entering or crossing the crosswalk is against the law. This is most important when turning right from Remsen onto Route 59, since the bushes at Enterprise Renta-Car block waiting pedestrians from motorists’ views, causing many near-accidents. 2. Crossing Route 59 near Monsey Glatt: Pedestrians may not realize this, but Route 59 near Monsey Glatt/Bates is one of the most dangerous places one can cross. Let me explain why. One: Route 59 has a higher speed limit (40 mph) than most local roads (30 mph). Studies show that while hit by a car at 30 mph a pedestrian has a 50% chance of surviving, at 40 mph a pedestrian has a 90% of being killed. Two: Route 59 near Monsey Glatt has three lanes instead of two, and there are cars coming from three different directions, and turning to three different directions. While you might be confident that you can make it through safely, drivers are not expecting pedestrians to be on the road, and when they do see you they can lose control, which can cause a fatal accident. Also, crossing halfway and waiting at the yellow lines is just as dangerous, because while the drivers may have an extra chance to see you, there is no way to communicate, and the drivers get flustered and it can end badly. Remember, If you would walk just a little farther down the 59 to the corner of Remsen (taking an estimated additional five minutes), there is a crosswalk! 3. Cyclists: Local cyclists, especially yeshiva bachurim, seem to have forgotten (or were never taught), two basic rules. One: Cyclists share the road with cars whenever possible, and need to be on the shoulder, moving with traffic, never, ever against it. Two: Since they share the road with the car they need to follow the same traffic rules as cars (or at least as pedestrians!). 4. Leaving Bates, turning left onto Route 59: This is a really tricky turn and unfortunately I’ve witnessed, far too many times, drivers turning, forgetting that there is oncoming traffic and sliding into each other. Drivers behind, please don’t honk, pressuring the first motorist in the row to make an unsafe turn. Also, please remember that there is a crosswalk there — driving over the crosswalk to wait for your turn makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross, causing them to cross in unsafe places. Let us remember, when a tragedy happens all parties and their families suffer equally. Only as a community (pedestrian and motorists) working together will we see a happier and safer community. I HAD FINISHED LEARNING with my friend Rena, when I mentioned that I planned to go to her sister, Miriam, later that day to give her some pictures I had taken when we had gone to Demarest Farms together with our kids. (Thank you, The Monsey View, for your Excursions booklet!) My friend asked if I could return some Purim costumes she had borrowed from her sister, and I was glad to do it. When I went to Miriam’s house, she was having her son try on a biking helmet. She asked me if it fit him, but I told her I wasn’t sure. However, if she was asking me if she should return it, I would say yes, and I explained why I thought the picture on the helmet was not appropriate. She decided to return it. I asked her where she had purchased it, and it turned out to be the store I was headed to next. I took it and returned it for her. The following day, I found myself with some time on my hands. I called up Rena’s other sister, whom I am friends with, to see if she wanted a forty-five minute visit from me, until I had to be at my next stop. She paused and thought for a moment and then said yes. When I got to her house, I mentioned where I was going after I would be leaving her house. She excitedly asked me if I could drop her off at her mother’s house, which was a few doors down from where I was going. I asked her if that was why she had paused when I had asked her if I could stop by and she said yes. Her mother wasn’t feeling well and she had offered to stop by to help her. It was amazing hasgacha pratis that we were able to see each other and I could take her to where she needed to go at the time she and I needed to be somewhere!

CAN WE TALK about muffins for a minute? If you are familiar with Nutrition by Tanya you know that we sell a lot of muffins. In fact, muffins are almost synonymous with Nutrition by Tanya. What’s up with that? Well, in short, after years of working with clients, Tanya found that from the hardest things for clients to give up while on a diet are baked goods. Ice cream can be delicious even when it is dietetic. Pizza and chocolate can be worked into a healthy plan once in a while too. But what about the daily coffee and cake that is a staple for most people?! Life just isn’t the same without them. There is something about sitting down to a baked treat on a daily basis that is pretty much etched into people’s lifestyles. Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t push products. We sell many items at our various locations, because they make dieting easier, more convenient or more fun. We have kugels and food scales, water bottles and vitamins, etc. All the products are there because we found that they help clients in some way. However, the only products you will hear me convincing people to try are the muffins and cookies. I still remember the first time I tasted a TAP muffin. It was during my training with Tanya several years ago; I tasted the muffin and was hooked. I couldn’t believe that they were whole grain, had no sweeteners other than apple juice, had no preservatives, were low calorie and were ridiculously delicious! I went home that night, my head filled with everything I had learned during my training, but kind of distracted by the muffin. All I could think about was that I wanted to go back to the Brooklyn office to have another muffin! People ask me all the time for muffin recipes, and I am happy to oblige. place oil or margarine with applesauce or apple butter, and substitute the sugar with zero-calorie sweetener. Unfortunately, what is usually left is a smallish, spongy kind of unsatisfying version of a muffin that no one really wants. I understand the hesitation to eat a three- or four-dollar muffin on a regular basis. I am a pretty careful shopper, love getting a good deal, and don’t appreciate being taken advantage of. However, when I see baked goods like kokosh cake or chocolate chip cookies on clients’ food logs, I implore them to try the TAP muffins. Here’s how I see it. Once a client has already decided to invest time and money into losing weight, it is a shame to eat baked goods that are certain to sabotage their diet, when for an extra $15 or $20 a week they can treat themselves to something similar and just as delicious and still stay on track. JUST BEFORE THE BAAL SHEM TOV left this world on the first day of Shavuos in the year 5520, he declared, “Do not let the foot of ga’ava come upon me.” (Tehillim 36:12) The Baal Shem Tov then elaborated on a posuk from Parshas Ki Savo: “V’hismakartem sham… — And there you will seek to sell yourselves to your enemies for servants and maidservants, but none shall buy you.” (Devarim 28:68) The Baal Shem Tov explained as follows: “There…” There refers to “in your heart.” “…you will seek to sell yourselves…” You should always suspect that you have sold yourself to your enemy, the Yetzer Hara. “…for servants and maidservants…” You should consider that all your mitzvos were only performed in order to earn reward, which is the level of a servant. “…but none shall buy you.” Having humbled your heart completely, no evil will be able to rule over you, and there will be no accusation against you. You will be connected to the Source of Life. In Parshas Shoftim, we discussed the pursuit of tzedek. The example we considered was that of a person who was honest enough with himself to realize that, on some level, he davened Shacharis only so that he could then have “permission” to eat. We said that he should not hide from this truth, but embrace it and daven anyway. We concluded that davening despite acknowledging these impure intentions adds a purity of intention to the tefillah. By doing a mitzvah despite realizing that our intentions are not completely pure, we prove that we know doing the mitzvah is the right thing to do, regardless of our intentions. Based on the above story of the Baal Shem Tov, we see that we should not only be willing to face our imperfect intentions when we happen to encounter them, but we should even seek them out. In fact, the Baal Shem Tov enjoins us to regard all of our intention as impure, as this will break our hearts and bring us to humility. By doing so, we will free ourselves from the control of the
Yetzer Hara. It says in the sefer Tanya, chapter 27, that if a person is saddened because impure thoughts or urges enter his mind, then it is a sign that this person is arrogant. This person must have assumed himself to be on a level so high that such thoughts and urges would never enter his mind. Rather than be saddened, this person should rejoice that he has overcome these urges and pushed them from his mind, for every time a person repels evil thoughts and urges, he suppresses the power of evil in this world. The Zohar HaKadosh, in Parshas Terumah, describes the great nachas ruach we give Hashem when the power of evil is suppressed in this world: “Then Hashem’s glory rises above all, more than by any other praise, and this ascent is greater than all else...” The Tanya concludes that even if a person should struggle with evil urges all day long, he should not feel depressed. It could very well be that he was created for the purpose of overcoming such thoughts. By constantly fighting these urges, he gives a tremendous nachas ruach to Hashem. We are moving deeper into Elul, and we struggle to reflect on what we have done and who we have become. It is natural to panic and quickly look away whenever we see something about ourselves that we feel is less than perfect. Do not be afraid. Rather than viewing each imperfect thought or desire we have as proof of how lowly we are, we should rather see them as amazing opportunities to help reduce the power of evil in this world, and to bring nachas to Hashem. When we serve Hashem for the sake of a reward, we serve him as a servant, and He is Malkeinu — our King. By embracing our imperfections and overcoming our negative urges, we elevate our avodah to that of a son, and Hashem is Avinu — our Father. May we all we conduct our cheshbon hanefesh honestly and thoroughly this Elul so that we can joyously proclaim, “Avinu, Malkeinu” on Rosh Hashana.

Rachmanim B’nei Rachmanim: Jewish Community Steps up to Lend a Hand in Harvey Relief Efforts THE FIRST OF TWO TRUCKLOADS of emergency supplies made its way from the Town Square shopping center to Houston last week, as kindhearted Monsey residents did their part to help Texas residents whose lives have been irrevocably altered by the floodwaters of Hurricane Harvey. Evergreen manager Yoel Schonfeld told The Journal News that a truck filled with donated toiletries, water and other items left for Houston last Thursday. Evergreen is also part of a group effort that includes Achiezer, Amudim, Seasons and the Orthodox Union and had generous residents of Monsey, Brooklyn, Lakewood, Manhattan, Queens, the Five Towns, Westchester and Baltimore filling a convoy of trucks filled with supplies to hard-hit areas this week. The response at all locations has been overwhelming, with many in the area recalling how difficult things were in 2012 when Hurricane Sandy decimated local Jewish communities in areas such as Seagate and the greater Five Towns area. Schonfeld said that shoppers have been bringing full carloads of supplies to the store which continued to accept donations through Sunday for shipment to needy individuals in Texas. “It’s a must,” said Schonfeld. “It’s what we do.” Agudath Israel of America is one of several other organizations that have set up disaster relief funds providing humanitarian assistance to Houston, home to many Jewish families. The catastrophic flooding in Houston has left many homeless, with financial damages reach-
ing staggering totals. Rabbi Barry Gelman, the head of Houston’s largest shul, reported that the facility was deluged with six to seven feet of water. All but one of the shul’s sifrei Torah were moved to safe locations before Harvey hit the area, with the remaining Torah successfully rescued after the storm struck. Rabbi Gelman, who was evacuated from his own home by boat, told Hamodia that the home of nearly every member of his shul had been flooded by Harvey. “Hundreds from our shul have been affected and will be out of their homes for many months,” said Rabbi Gelman.
Butcher Shop Employee Arrested for Ongoing Theft AN EMPLOYEE AT A NEW SQUARE butcher shop is under arrest after he was spotted on surveillance footage taking money from the store’s register. The Journal News reported that Salomon Cuenca-Ramos broke into Oneg Butcher Shop on the night of Friday, August 25th and was spotted by an area resident when he left the closed store. The owner of the store, who suspected that cash had been taken, called the Ramapo Police Department after the weekend and a review of the store’s security cameras showed 30-year-old Salo-

Detective Dennis Procter of the Ramapo Police Department said that investigators believe that CuencaRamos had been stealing small amounts of money for weeks and estimate the total amount taken at several hundred dollars. Cuenca-Ramos was released on $500 bail.

Follow this recipe for each layer of the cake, adding the item for that specific color listed at the end of the ingredient list.
INGREDIENTS: 1 cup sugar
½ tsp baking powder
5 whole eggs
For brown layer: 2 T. cocoa diluted in a drop of water
¼ cup oil
For green layer: green food coloring, measured according to desired color
1 T. vanilla sugar 1 ½ teaspoon almond extract
For pink layer: red food coloring, measured according to desired color
1 cup flour
For white layer: 1 tsp. vanilla extract
RAINBOW CAKE
LAYERS:
DIRECTIONS: 1. Beat eggs and sugar well. 2. Add oil, vanilla sugar and almond extract, and mix. 3. Lower speed and add flour and baking powder, and then the ingredient for that specific layer color 4. Pour each layer into a silver foil-lined cookie sheet. 5. Bake at 350° for 18–20 minutes and check for readiness.
CHOCOLATE GLAZE: 9 egg yolks
¾ cup sugar
4 T. cocoa
1 ½ T. vanilla sugar
¾ pound margarine
¾ cup water
1 ½ T. coffee
6 ounces baking chocolate
DIRECTIONS: 1. Mix egg yolks and margarine in mixer until creamy.
4. Refrigerate for two hours.
2. Cook remaining ingredients on a low flame.
6. Blend with a hand blender and slowly pour glaze over cake.
3. When cooked, pour into creamy mixture.
5. Heat mixture in a double boiler.
ASSEMBLY: 1 ½ cups raspberry jam
DIRECTIONS: 1. Spread ½ cup raspberry jam on each layer, except the top layer, and layer one over the other. 2. Pour glaze onto top layer.

CHOCOLATE LAYER: 2 sticks margarine 1 ½ cups sugar 4 whole eggs 4 oz. melted baking chocolate 2 tsp. baking powder 1 ½ cups flour
DIRECTIONS: 1. Beat margarine and sugar until smooth. 2. Add the rest of the ingredients. 3. Pour batter into a 10”x16” baking pan lined with silver foil.
COCONUT LAYER: 9 egg whites 1 cup sugar 1 T. vanilla sugar 1 T. lemon juice 3 cups ground coconut
DIRECTIONS: 1. Beat egg whites well to form a snow. 2. Slowly add sugars and beat. 3. By hand, slowly add lemon juice and coconut. 4. Pour batter slowly over chocolate layer. 5. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes to an hour.

One great change we see is education. There is so much great information and there are so many teaching methods out there; so many amazing people to learn from. It can get a bit intimidating and overwhelming. So the first thing to remember is: I don’t have to try everything, and whatever I try doesn’t have to be perfect. Another
important detail to keep in mind: Not every method works for every parent and child. That’s why there are so many good ideas that work and you can tweak the methods to make them your own. Your binah yeseira, your motherly instinct, is Gd-given. With every baby Hashem blessed you, He gave you a set of tools to help aid each child in reaching his or her potential. The beautiful reality is that Hashem, in His infinite wisdom, has partnered up parents with their children as perfectly as He sees fit. That’s the number-one thing to remember. Even before I start tackling any real-life situations, I thank Hashem every day for my little ones, my big ones, my sticky ones, my silly, funny, cuddly ones and everyone in between! Hashem made them —
they are perfectly imperfect. Hashem gave them to me; I can handle this! Mommies often beg me to “fix” their children. One mom was kidding (I hope!) when she said, “Please take my kid until he’s 18 and then give him back when he’s perfect!” There are no cookie cutters for children and baking them on 350° for 10-15 minutes will not turn them a beautiful shade of golden brown on the outside while keeping their in-
sides gooey and fudgy. We are surely learning many new things in the parenting education area, but along with that, our fears are increasing. We know what’s out there, what could happen and the anxiety can paralyze us. Still and all, let’s not throw out the baby with the bath water. A lot of the old-fashioned parenting methods do not work in today’s generation. I handpick the triedand-true methods that have stood the test of time and use it in my day-to-day. For instance, threatening and shaming was a big go-to in the past 50 years. I know it does not work today! In fact, it causes untold damage. But positive reinforcement is something that has always worked and is the foundation of a child’s future. We call it “writing a good story.” As a parent, I need to be aware that my children take the words I use to describe them very seriously. They see them as labels and subconsciously rise to fulfill them, whether they’re negative or positive. That’s why it’s so important to praise, compliment and give positive feedback. A child thrives on good words and it gives him chizuk to improve. On the flip side, when a kid hears negative things about themselves it spurs them on to continue down that road. They believe they don’t have the strength to be anything but that bad character they were labeled as. Constructive criticism is the fine line in between. Like a tightrope walker, we must know this thin line means life or death. It is definitely a parent’s job to correct a child, but it must be done in a loving way for the child to properly accept and process it. An example would be, “Wow, Moshe, I love how you are helping your brother with his home-
work. It is not okay to yell at him. Can you try saying it gently?” A child will feel his parent’s appreciation and love, while being taught the correct concept. If, chas v’shalom, I make a mistake and call my child a liar, he will believe that about himself and try to be the best liar Mommy has ever seen. Because if Mommy said that’s what I am, it must be true. But if a parent shows they have endless belief in the potential of their child, suddenly the sky's the limit. A child thinks, “I can do anything! My Tatty and Mommy said so!” Such an attitude sets a young, impressionable mind up for the idea that she can accomplish anything she tries to do. To send them down the road of success or failure takes the same amount of energy. I want to give my beloved child the best tools and the greatest fighting chance they have in this world. I cannot take away their nisyonos, but I can help build their muscles so that they can survive and thrive as great assets in Klal Yisroel. As a mother of eight kids, bli ayin hara, I know there is no “one size fits all” when it comes to discipline. What works on one little girl may fail miserably on the next. I need to remember there is no specific formula that works on each child, and no one is guaranteed positive results. We keep an open mind and work hard at trying different ways until we find what works. Then we stick to it with confidence and daven to Hashem for a positive outcome. Have you ever wondered why some people really enjoy reading? Or why some spouses are better than others at empathizing? Or why your coworker excels at thinking logically? Or why writing comes so easily to some people, yet is so dreaded by others? After many years of research, Dr. Howard Gardner, a psychologist and professor of neuroscience at Harvard University, came up with a well-accepted theory that, perhaps, explains the answers to all of these questions and more. His theory also helps us recognize and appreciate people’s varying strengths and talents — including our own — so we can understand the effect they have on our daily life. In the popular book, Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences (1983), Dr. Gardner elucidates his theory in detail. Basically, his research of “intelligences” led him to the conclusion that we all possess at least seven different types of intelligence, rather than just one type of mental intelligence which is typically measured by an IQ test. These, he feels, can be observed and measured in daily life; they reflect the different ways we interact with the world. According to Dr. Gardner’s theory, for example, a young boy who is able to quickly learn his multiplication tables is no more or less intelligent than a boy of a similar age who can do incredible chasunah shtick, like spinning on his head (with a helmet on, of course, like my nephew does). Although one boy has a mathematical intelligence and the other has an athletic type of intelligence, both are utilizing types of intelligence that use different sets of skills. Traditional views assume that intelligence is passed down, genetically, and is primarily measured by a cognitive test. They strongly emphasize the academic skills of linguistic and mathematical intelligence and downplay abilities of those who exhibit other types of intelligence, such as artists, musicians, dancers, therapists and entrepreneurs. Dr. Gardner, by broadening the definition of intelligence, says it is not a question of whether a person is intelligent, but rather in what way is he or she intelligent.

WHAT ARE THE SEVEN INTELLIGENCES? Dr. Gardner theorizes that just as everyone is born with a unique fingerprint, so too, every person has multiple intelligences and a unique profile of how they fit together. Our challenge is to identify our dominant intelligence, use that avenue for learning new skills, and find an occupation that is fulfilling for us. A multiple intelligence test can define the type of intelligence each of us has, and suggest the attitude, characteristics and job that best suits us. A typical multiple intelligence test consists of questions that don’t only relate to math, logic or science, but also include questions on day-to-day life — e.g., what your hobbies are, how much you like music, how adept you are with directions, how you mix with people, how you like social gatherings, etc. THE FOLLOWING are the seven types of intelligences and sample career matches for each:
1. LINGUISTIC INTELLIGENCE The ability to express your thoughts and ideas well, using language. It allows you to understand the order, the meaning of words, to learn grammar quickly and apply verbal skills smoothly. Those who excel in linguistic intelligence would typically be good at reading, writing, telling stories and memorizing words. Career matches: writer, journalist, speaker, lawyer, orator, politician, translator
2. LOGICAL/ MATHEMATICAL INTELLIGENCE Those people who are strong in logical-mathematical intelligence, have the ability to understand the underlying principles of cause and effect or to see logical relationships between ideas, numbers or concepts. They are very competent at math, creative problem-solving, organizing, logical reasoning and investigating new ideas. This type of intelligence allows you to understand abstract concepts and it equips you with debating skills and inductive thinking. Career matches: scientist, mathematician, accountant, computer analyst, engineer, detective
3. SPATIAL INTELLIGENCE Spatial intelligence is the ability to think in 3D images and shapes. It also incorporates abstract and analytical abilities that go beyond merely seeing images. This type of intelligence is a primary function of the right side of the brain and is used when solving puzzles and figuring out maps. It is also used in any type of construction or engineering project. Training and improving one’s spatial intelligence can help improve many areas of your brain including memory, cognitive ability and thinking. If you can visualize solutions or patterns to solving a problem, you have a distinct edge over people who have to have everything laid out before they can try to find a solution. Career matches: pilots, architects, interior designers, engineers

MUSICAL INTELLIGENCE If you excel in musical intelligence, you have an ability to quickly pick up rhythms, hear patterns and tones, and/or express yourself through singing or playing an instrument. People with musical intelligence learn best through auditory means, e.g., lectures or conversations. They typically are thinking about, listening to, or playing music as much as time allows. They are often able to compose music and reproduce music that they hear. Career matches: professional musician, music teacher, music composer, music therapist, singer
5. BODILY-KINESTHETIC INTELLIGENCE The ability to use your body to accomplish a task. Those who exhibit a strong bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, gravitate to activities that allow them to solve problems by moving around and becoming physically involved. It allows perfect control to your moves. Career matches: professional athlete, doctor, actor, firefighter
6. INTERPERSONAL INTELLIGENCE Those who are strong in interpersonal intelligence understand and effectively interact with people. They have effective verbal and nonverbal communication and are aware of individual uniqueness and sensitivity. They excel in sympathy, comfort and inspiration. Career matches: salesperson, leaders, teachers, entrepreneurs
7. INTRAPERSONAL INTELLIGENCE People with intrapersonal intelligence — aka Self Intelligence or Emotional Intelligence — are adept at looking inward and figuring out their own feelings, motivations and goals in a profound way, which they can use to plan and orient their life. They understand themselves, are introspective and seek understanding. Career matches: psychologist, coach, philosopher.

Tell us a bit about your program. Music n’ Minutes is a program that enables children to play the piano book without any musical background. How is that possible? Each package includes a piano booklet, colored stickers and a CD. Children put the colored stickers onto the designated keys of their piano, which serve as their playing guide. Each song in the piano book is written in professional sheet music but also has color-coded notes, so all the child has to do is press the coordinating keys on the piano and he’ll be making music.
Each time the child practices, he gets more comfortable with playing the tunes and finding the colors, and eventually, by osmosis, the children also pick up on the notes and which keys they represent. This instant satisfaction encourages them, and because they feel it’s doable, they are eager to practice and cultivate their skill.
Can every child learn music? Absolutely! It is a common misconception that only the musically inclined or those who can afford private

lessons can tap into this special gift of music. Music is a language that can be learned and mastered. And here, it is so easily accessible. What ages is your product geared for? We recommend our product for ages 7+, and I’d compare it to swimming lessons: One is almost never too young and certainly never too old to learn music. ANIMAL SCHOOL is a popular short story about some animals that started a school. They put together a curriculum consisting of running, swimming, flying and climbing. All the animals had to take each subject. The duck did excellent in swimming, but very poorly in running. As a result, he had to stay after school to practice his running. The rabbit did great in running, but had a nervous breakdown because he had to do a lot of make-up work in swimming. The squirrel was super at climbing but had problems in flying class, since his teacher made him start from the ground up instead of the treetop down, which he was much better at. Then there was the eagle that was constantly being disciplined because although he beat all the others at getting to the top of the tree, he insisted on doing it his own way.

Funny — and yet sadly realistic. Our society has made it that instead of celebrating the differences in our children and focusing on each child’s strengths, we often put them in a box. Schools group children together by age, and they are expected to succeed academically according to the way things are set up, or suffer. Often, we forget that once a student graduates, it is not the academics that count but their communication and socialization skills. Interestingly, it is usually these out-of-the-box people who have made discoveries that have benefitted mankind. Therefore, this article wants to salute the programs that help a child who needs something beyond the typical classroom setting so that they can feel good about themselves and their way of learning. These programs are an essential part of our community. UNDERSTANDING that sometimes the classes are very large and a child might just need a lower teacher/student ratio to grasp what
is being taught, the federal government has set aside Title 1 money for each school district. About 48 Jewish elementary and high schools in East Ramapo receive Title 1 funding. These schools hire teachers to work with students either one-onone or in small groups of up to six students. This is at no cost to the parent, but because it is funded by the government, only secular subjects can be taught. There are also rules for how long a student can be serviced per day. Therefore, when Satmar girls’ school found some students still needed more than what Title 1 could give, they started an intensive resource room for the teacher to continue teaching their students what they needed in order to succeed. Viznitz girls’ high school also found that Title 1 only helped a certain amount of their high school girls. As a result, they set up individualized programs for each girl who needed more than the Title 1 help. Depending on the need, a girl might be in class some periods and
have a non-academic program that focuses more on their strengths, interests and capabilities during other periods. Although it is only for the families within their school and can be costly, seeing the confidence and self-esteem these girls have makes it worthwhile. Another girls’ high school that jumped in to help girls succeed according to their abilities is Ateres Bais Yaakov. Understanding that some girls needed a smaller class but would benefit from the constant social interactions a larger school provides, Ateres gladly accepted Ashira’s request to be housed at their school. The girls are considered 100% Ateres students and get to socialize with girls their age. At the same time, due to the academic supports they need, they get their individualized instruction in a self-contained classroom. Their strengths are not overshadowed by their weaknesses. Ashira’s well-thought-out program makes sure the girls learn in a way that facilitates their social and academic growth. They have a regents and non-regent track, like many high schools, and integrate within the academic classrooms when it is appropriate. However, the building blocks really begin at a younger age. The Skill Building Center is an exceptional program that tries to catch these children at a young age to give them the skills they need before the gap starts to widen and the problems become overwhelming. Currently, they are working with children ages four to fourteen who have either academic or social challenges. Trying to help the children before their self-esteem is destroyed, the Skills Building Center keeps their classes small with an individualized program that teach the children to move beyond their weaknesses. With some children, it takes one or two years for them to have the skills needed to successfully function within the general classroom setting. For other children with more serious issues, they need the continued support of the Skill Building Center. However, though it is self-contained, the children are able to mainstream when it is appropriate at two general education schools: Yeshivas Eitz Chaim and Bnos Bracha, which has the distinction of being one of the very few Jewish schools in America that offers a gifted program to their students. Another school that works just like any other boys’ yeshiva is Bais HaChinuch. They stand out because of their low teacher-to-student ratio. For boys who are struggling within the general education classroom of thirty boys in the class, this school offers them the same classroom education but with eight to twelve boys in the class, depending on the grade. The teacher is able to set the curriculum based on the needs of the students. The focus is on giving the boys the skills they need in order to succeed. Like any other yeshiva, they also have children who need Title 1 services and will be pulled out if extra help is indicated. The yeshiva has found that when the boys are happy

and have self-confidence, many behavioral issues that get in the way of their learning disappear. Often, these children return to the very same yeshiva that recommended their placement. Maalos is a well-known program located at Bais Rochel. It is a selfcontained program where children learn either one-on-one or in small groups, based on their academic needs. The girls are mainstreamed for every non-academic activity and integrated into the classroom when it is appropriate. The focus is on the children in the younger grades, although they do have some students in middle school. The point of the program is for the girls to eventually go back into the classroom setting with all the tools they need to be able to function properly. Therefore, they also concentrate on social skills and there is a lot of encouragement for the Bais Rochel girls to interact with the Maalos girls in and out of school. There are also some private selfcontained classrooms that have been started in a few schools. It started when a parent approached Mrs. Schlesinger, knowing how successful she had been in setting up such classes throughout Lakewood. She advertised, formed a class, and found a school willing to
host the class. Currently one class is integrating back into the regular education classroom. This year there will be a boy’s class in a cheder and a possibility of two girls’ classes. Her goals are to give the children the skills needed to go back into the mainstream classroom. When this occurs, the children will still get the help they need throughout the transition. As for the children who learn best in a smaller class environment, she wants them to get their needs filled, while still being part of the school environment. Various communities have this type of program in place, sometimes with the different community schools working together to help make it successful. Baruch Hashem, there are people and schools that are willing to do what they can to make sure many children succeed and feel good about who they are. Learning confidence and being able to succeed at their own pace and level helps to make children not only feel happy about themselves, but also safe. Since children are our future and number-one priority, it is essential that we give as much support as we can to these programs and the future ones that will be created. After all, one size does not fit all.

The Shabbos candles flicker gently as the Kleins enjoy the Shabbos seudah together. Chaim sits together with his family, delighting in the warmth and love that Shabbos brings to his family each week. Chaim’s favorite day of the week is Shabbos! He participates loudly in the zemiros, trying to match his father’s booming voice. But then comes the hard part of Shabbos. Chaim gets quiet as his father starts asking his siblings the Parsha shailos. The enthusiastic voices drone over his head. Words he is unfamiliar with. Bo. Moshe. Paraoh. Makos. His frustration and confusion compels him to sabotage this scene, to pull the tablecloth, to tantrum and cry. He is left out, alone. THIS SCENE, ONCE TYPICAL of many homes in Monsey, has radically changed. Chaim, and many children like him, attend the special program at the local public school. The education they receive each day is sorely lacking a beautiful gift most children take for granted. They do not learn Torah. This is a hard pill for many parents to swallow, but the needs that their children have outweigh the desire of learning about Yiddishkeit. Seeing no better option, they enroll their children. They know there is no other solution. In the past, parents could only dream about a supplemental cheder program. Rayim jumped in to fill the gap, that yearning deep inside the hearts of our most beautiful children. The Cheder is run by Mr. Sperber and dedicated rebbeim: Rabbi Hershkowitz, Rabbi Oshry, Rabbi Gross, Rabbi Leibel and Rabbi Frank. They are genuinely devoted to running a program designed especially for our children. The children come to Rayim Cheder right after their day school program. They excitedly embark upon their daily learning, enthusiastic about absorbing the lessons and activities. Rayim’s curriculum includes learning about the parsha and yomim tovim, davening and other special activities. Learning the parsha is an experience. Each concept is presented in a manner that is clear to all types of learners. The rebbe explains the parsha and each week includes activities, such as play-acting the scene and arts ‘n crafts. The children bentch each other with their hands crossed, like Yakov Avinu. They daven with a tallis, like Moshe Rabbeinu. They design Avraham Avinu’s tent. The parsha comes alive to them, and they actually understand and know the material. Yom tov lessons are exciting and taught well. The children learn about kapparos and design them on sticks. They delight in preparing for each yom tov,
with scenes enacted at Rayim’s cheder with enthusiasm. They learn and practice the Mah Nishtana at the Cheder, and then say it with pride at their Seder table at home. They dance around a Lag b’Omer fire. They blow shofar. Everything they see at home is now understood and part of their life. Rayim’s cheder program aims to teach the children key skills. Alef-Bais is taught in an interactive manner and clearly presented. Social skills are taught and implemented in real-life role play. Watching the children daven is heartwarming and inspiring. The loud “al mitzvas tzitzis” portrays an enthusiasm that is only found at this special place. Rayim’s cheder also grants the children the fun parts of Torah. They enjoy special activities, such as trips and events. When Rabbi Gross had a baby, they participated in the voch nacht experience, saying Shema eagerly and receiving pekelach. They also go on trips and get to enjoy a petting zoo. IT’S SHABBOS AGAIN. The Shabbos candles glow, and the challos peek out from beneath their cover. Chaim bounces in his seat. It’s Shabbos! He cannot wait to answer the shailos his father will ask him. And he will know every answer! He now is an integrated member of his family and community. His mother beams as Chaim answers, “Parshas Shemos!” confidently and with glee. He retells the story about Mitzrayim. He now knows who Paroah is. The Klein family is complete, enjoying the Shabbos seudah, the gift of Torah shared by all.
Rayim has included Chaim and his friends in our most beautiful heritage, in learning about the Torah and our yomim tovim. It’s a gift that can be shared by all. It’s a gift, presented by Rayim, now shared by all our children.

All around us, kids are heading off to school with their new gear, safely packed inside their fresh, ummm, what do you call those things? ‘Round these parts the average person calls it a briefcase, but to most of the world, a briefcase conjures this image:
Once upon a time school children would shlep their books to school using a book strap — which was basically just a belt — or carry them in their arms. Briefcases are a relatively new invention. One of the first attempts at creating a soft carrying pack was in 1874 by Colonel Henry C. Merriam. His design was aimed at army units, but due to bad marketing, his idea only caught on in 1927 — after competition was already in business.

In 1922, Lloyd Nelson, an outdoorsman, based his “Indian Pack Board” somewhat on an Inuit design that featured a stick base and seal skin covering.
1938 brought with it the invention of zippered backpacks. Gerry Cunningham, an outdoor enthusiast, was the first to make this type of bag, which closely resembled the versions we are used to today. He also started using nylon instead of canvas, to create a lightweight but durable bag for his excursions. He started selling his backpacks, and they sold well in the ski and outdoors market. In 1969 the Ski and Hike daypack by Jansport hit the market. Here’s where things get interesting: One of the outdoors stores that bought the bags for resale was connected to an institute of higher learning in the rainy state of Washington, and due to the weather, students began purchasing the bags to keep their books dry. The trend started slowly catching on. Over in Chico, California, a student decided to create his own version of the backpack in the 1970s, based on the measurements of his textbooks. He called it the Cricket and tried to sell it to the local school bookstore. They laughed at him, not believing anyone would buy backpacks, but upon agreeing to try it out on consignment, the store sold out. L.L. Bean featured the design in their catalogue, and sold tens of thousands of them almost instantly. By the ‘80s almost every school child had his own backpack. The bookbag was here to stay!

• Backpacks should never carry more than 10% of the wearer’s weight; doing so can result in permanent back issues. • Proper fit is important. The bag should never be wider or longer than the wearer’s torso or hang more than four inches below the waist. • Make sure the bag has well-padded straps! • If your bag has a hip or chest belt, they can help to transfer the weight of the load from the back to other areas. • Multiple pockets? Use them to distribute the bag’s weight more evenly. • Try to pack lighter-weight items at the bottom of the bag.

Trending food makes a statement; plating speaks even louder. Black pepper tunasashimi strategically angled on a bed of green, a perfectly formed kani salad and vinaigrette droplets speak to the discriminating eye and palate.
A triangular dish is perfect for these miniatures. Small in size, yet huge in taste, the chocolate-filled ice cream melts slightly with dripping, hot, caramel sauce. To fill the plate a bit more, we add a tiramisu, caramel sticks, and rosemary garnishes.
As soon as attendees enter the room they are handed a fluted, champagnefilled glass to help them relax after a full workday.

HI EVERYBODY! I just had a thought. Not that I don’t think at other times; don’t get the wrong idea, I do think sometimes. Really I do. What would be if we did things a bit differently this year? Think about it. We run around looking for that perfect outfit with the perfect matching headband and tights and belt and shirt. The time, oh, the time! That’s spent on searching for all these things. No matter how organized you are or how early you start with yom tov preps, there’s always a lastminute to-do list. It’s just the way the cycle of life works. Unless you’re going to a five-star hotel for yom tov; in that case you can disregard mostly everything I say. Make a list of what you need. (And yeah, some wants, too.) Write down what store you’ll go to for that particular item. Yup. That’s the deal. You go to one store for that item and that’s it. They don’t have exactly the shade of grey you wanted? Too bad! By nature I’m a perfectionist, so I will see how this experiment works. Let me know if you’re trying it, and let’s see how much calmer we are this year. Wednesday! School day! Kids are up at dawn. The buses, baruch Hashem, came. Some an hour late, some 20 minutes early. It takes about a week for the drivers to get the routes down pat, just about enough time for the mamas to get their own route down pat. Just saying. Take this day to recharge from your hectic week (months?). If you’re keyed up, and can’t sit still, then today is the perfect day to pack away the summer toys. Put them in a container and store them in the attic/shed.
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7: Buy containers to store the summer clothing. Preferably clear ones with click-it closures. Moth balls keep the clothing from staining, but the smell is not a welcome one to most people. You can put bounce sheets alongside them. Label each container. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8: Shopping lists! School lists are all done! Now you can start with yom tov lists. Was that a sigh I heard? Oh... you said yay! Great! Right away! SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10: Today is my favorite part of the list. Shopping! Yes, I know Sunday the stores are the most

crowded but I actually thrive on that! Also, instead of taking your boys along to try on clothing, you can take it home and they can try them on in the comfort of your home. You can return/ exchange the next day. They can’t throw a tantrum over the green velvet pants while you prefer the burgundy wool ones, while they are in cheder. Oh, the choices. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 11: Yom tov menus. While you’re surrounded by all your cookbooks, you can make your supper menus. You’re goal this year should be to make wholesome, simple dinners. As long as the chicken is cooked and not served raw, (yeah, I know they serve raw beef in fancy restaurants but not here, thank you very much) for supper, not necessarily a six-course meal and frazzled mom, the children are usually happy. So stick to basics. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12: Today, check the previous year’s winter clothing Make it your mission to fill up at least one large garbage bag to give away so you have place for the new stuff. Practice blowing the shofar. Oh wrong list. Sorry. And now... it’s been a great ride! I’m so proud of you all who followed the program the past few months! Real Estate Eyewear and Sight WHEN ONE GETS A “NO” on a pre-approval or a denial for their mortgage loan, should one give up? I say a resounding no. I have always surrounded myself with mortgage professionals in my office. When I get stumped with a question on a guideline or how to structure a mortgage loan I always say that one set of eyes on a mortgage is not always enough. Unlike other industries that have gone completely tech, the mortgage industry still has a huge human element. Even if a file is begun online, a human processor is organizing the paperwork presented. Once all the paperwork is in, it is submitted to a human underwriter who validates the automatic underwriting system (AUS) approvals required in each loan. So, although the actual approvals (AUS) received are uniform, different underwriters, lenders’ policies, overlays and quality control departments view each file individualistically and therefore, all lenders are simply not the same. If one receives a denial, or their lender is requesting documentation that seems way out of line, know that a different set of eyes may come to a different conclusion. Here are three short examples that occurred this summer, where a different set of eyes came up with very different results! John M. was purchasing a condo. The home was a foreclosure, and there was no kitchen. Bank A denied his mortgage, because they didn’t believe he was moving in since he wasn’t selling his current residence. Bank B was okay with the occupancy but realized halfway in that the condo was not FHA approved and therefore could not close them with a 203k renovation loan. Now John was out of time! Bank C closed the loan with a post-closing escrow for the renovations. The whole process took 25 days. Marie O. was purchasing a primary residence. Her in-

come was solid, her assets were solid, and her credit scores high. She had a pre-approval from Big Bank A. Her loan was denied, because she had cosigned for a sibling and the loan had gone into foreclosure. Big Bank B took the complete application, ordered an appraisal, and then denied the loan for the same reason. Bank C took the application and had the same issue, but this time the lender did research and was able to procure documentation showing that although the loan went into foreclosure, the property was sold prior to an auction and the bank was paid every penny owed to them. Smaller Bank C overrode the AUS denial and closed the loan Shaya B. was purchasing a home for over one million dollars. He went to a mortgage broker who sent him to three different lenders and all three turned him down. One lender did so because the home appraised at 300k below purchase price. The next lender because he had “payment shock”: his current rental was much less than the new mortgage would be, and the third lender wanted a 24-month proof that he had paid rent and because he did repairs in lieu of rent for two months out of the 24, even with a letter from the landlord explaining that, they denied his loan. Shaya gave up and he thought that he had lost the house. His realtor suggested one more try. He went to a new bank. Bank D, who researched the guidelines, submitted and closed the loan in four weeks. Not only must your vision be sharp and the correct corrective eyewear is key, but the same is with every other aspect of one’s life: One’s vision must be clear and the correct set of eyes is needed to guide and direct one in the right path and direction.
