RE: THE RACKET UPSTAIRS (ISSUE #102) I’ve been following “The Noisy Neighbors” exchange in your beautiful publication with much fascination.

I am the upstairs neighbor wishing to apologize in the name of all upstairs neighbors in our community and beyond.

We are a defenseless party of fenced-in “sitting ducks” trying hard to tame the cock-a-doodle-do that is your everyday household norm.

Dear downstairs neighbor, we feel sorry for your having to swing with our tantrums, night rackets, piercing zemiros, breakfast and supper fiestas, chinuch adventures, intense sibling rivalry, falling Magnatile towers, little and big feet running marathons, guests, lebedige music, chair scraping — and you continue the list...

Please understand that we seek to create a calm home environment, though it is difficult for us to constantly shush our kids. We don’t think you’d want us to deny them regular growing-up activities.(Please note: I am horribly appalled by the family who allows pogo sticks, trampolines, bikes or scooters indoors.)

Maybe you didn’t realize, but it ain’t geshmak to have your family partake in our every move. So much as it is ear-splitting for you, it is deeply mortifying for us. We hate being heard and crave privacy just like you.

So, dear neighbor, this is a letter to make amends. Hope you’ll tune out a little now that you know the “Upstairs Part of the Story.”

Being a tenant is very different than sharing a condo! When two people own the same thing, both are “equal.”

I am working with little children for almost 30 years. I often wondered what makes one child a baalos middos, while the other not.

When Chazal say, “Derech eretz kodmah l’Torah,” they mean it! Mentchlichkeit comes before learning. Derech eretz and mentchlichkeit are mostly learned and taught subtly by parents’ behavior, The mother who tells her child, “Trampolines and pogo sticks, along with jump ropes and other outside activities belong outside,” sends a message to her children: “We care when others are hurt by our loud noise.”

The mother who takes care that her children should be quiet during quiet hours like Shabbos afternoon is teaching her children: “There are others to think about.”

I happen to love “noise of children,” but not on someone else’s cheshbon.

Isn’t’ doing ratzon Hashem fun?

“Fun” means to enjoy!

Doing ratzon Hashem is enjoyable!

Maybe if you will think of “The Perspective of the One Above,” you will have “fun” teaching your children what Hashem wants!

RE: PEDESTRIAN SAFETY (ISSUE #106) Last week someone wrote that she almost hit a mother with children as they were not crossing responsibly. You also wrote that pedestrians should only cross at crosswalks. My wife and I, as pedestrians, would like to ask drivers to yield at crosswalks according to the law. I always wait at crosswalks and cars don’t stop for me even when I have the right to walk.

When turning at intersections, cars should be careful of pedestrians walking on crosswalks in the direction they are headed to. I recently had that I was crossing Main Street at corner Grove at the crosswalk, and not only didn’t the driver yield, but he flashed his high beam so that I should run over to the other side quickly. When I continued walking at my normal pace, he began beeping as if I had done something wrong. He was supposed to stop for me, as I had the right of way. So, drivers, when you see a pedestrian waiting at a crosswalk, know that they have the right of way and are not walking into the street because they are scared to get hit.

I hope that drivers will take this law seriously.

TO MONSEY’S PEDESTRIANS AND DRIVERS, Monsey is still reeling in pain from the last unintentional killing (I can’t call it an accident), where a mother was walking with her three kids on a shoulder where cars are not allowed to be driving, and here come the drivers who start preaching about pedestrian safety. I came to work a day after the unintentional killing and asked some drivers if they knew the law regarding crosswalks (again, just because they were discussing how unsafely people crossed). Seventy percent of them did not know that they need to come to a full stop if a pedestrian just stepped off the curb.

There is a lot of talking about pedestrian education, which is a great idea, but I’m scared it could bring a lot more unintentional killings if Monsey’s pedestrians would know their rights, because as a driver told me, “I can’t stop for someone walking because the car behind me will cut me and

BACK TO GROWTH AGAIN It’s very frustrating to look around Spring Valley and see huge bombas that have totally changed our landscape. There are no trees and there’s unnecessary overcrowding. Don’t get me wrong; I’m happy that our community is growing, but why are we growing upward and not outward? Yes, there are new areas where people are moving to, but here in Spring Valley, everyone is trying to crowd into too small of lots with way too many people, into homes that are so tall they look down into other’s backyards and steal all of the privacy.

Let’s not even talk about the loss of grass! Who has grass nowadays?!

(We replaced them with garbage cans…) Not only does this make our environment look indecent, create a certain measure of discord amongst dwellers, and make us look — sorry to say — obsessively dominant to the local non-Jewish community, but it also hurts us homeowners.

While huge apartment complexes are being built, those of us who just want to extend our homes or build a new private house are stuck in the unbelievable position of being forced to wait inordinate amount of times. I applied for a permit to extend my house over a year ago — and I am still waiting for the final go-ahead to build.

Why? Because as more and more developments just keep appearing, the building department is flooded with a huge amount of work that

they can’t keep up with. What that means for people like me, is that my several kids are currently sleeping squashed in one bedroom in a tiny little house, and I step on them and their toys while making supper. With my growing family, baruch Hashem, my little house has no room to hold the things I need to live my life… Everything is bursting at the seams! Our family is suffering from our private version of overcrowding, and it is causing undue stress. Why do we have to live like this?

Yes, I know everything is bashert, but it hurts the most is that it may be people who live elsewhere on private properties surrounded by green acreage who are building, not realizing they’ve just lowered the quality of life for many of the people they’ve left behind…

RE: WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS (ISSUE #106) Dear Drenched, As a driver, there is something delightful about trying to navigate my way down the road during a raging thunderstorm, while attempting to see through the furiously swishing wipers. There’s nothing I enjoy more than pretending my car is a boat and sloshing through a foot or more of water, while drenching all passersby. If I wouldn’t be hesitant about wetting the inside of my car, I’d roll down my window and give you a “thumbs up” sign while you’re recovering from the tidal wave I’ve engulfed you in.

Are you kidding? Well, I am. You want me to “veer away” in order to prevent my dousing you? Where exactly? Into the oncoming traffic in the midst of a storm? Do you really think I notice you standing or walking on the sidewalk while I’m navigating the road during a heavy rainstorm? And, even if I do, my first thought should be, and is, on how to safely get the car through the street (which has transformed into lake). Are you really so egotisti-

cal as to think that I am deliberately trying to soak you?

Obviously, this is something that has occurred to you. I’m inclined to think that if such a large “puddle” has formed near your bus stop or edge of road, then either there’s a severe dip in the road or a clogged drain in your area. I would suggest you either call the town for repairs or stand as many feet away from the edge of the road as feasible so as not to feel as though you’ve just jumped into a pool fully clothed when a car swims by, while still catching the bus or walking down the street.

I just wanted to share a little story of how Hashem repaid me midah k’neged middah. I saw a scooter with a name near my house. I called the owner, and she was very thankful.

That day, my friend saw my child’s scooter near a park and took it home for me. A few days later, I saw another scooter and called the owner. Marvelous as it sounds, the next day I got a phone call from someone who found my child’s scooter that she had lost a year ago.

I also wanted to be m’oreir that people sometimes say brachos so fast that they mistakenly leave out words and parts of a word, skipping whole syllables. Please be careful to enunciate each word slowly and correctly. So many brachos come down when a bracha is recited with kavana. I heard from Rabbi Dovid Ashear that it is good to be accustomed to say “Baruch Atah Hashem,” and then pause before continuing on to the rest. It helps a person have kavanah.

Ha! You scared me there. I’m just helping the kids put together a lemonade stand to raise money for charity.

MY SON AND DAUGHTER-IN-LAW went to Brooklyn with their family for Shabbos to attend a kiddush. Since my daughter-in-law’s brother was going to her parents for Shabbos, she arranged to stay in her brother’s empty apartment. They got to the apartment with plenty of time to prepare before Shabbos. They had brought everything with them, so it took some time to organize things and making sure everything was in its place. After a while, they were all ready and had a relaxing time waiting for Shabbos to begin.

Soon it was time to light the candles. My daughter-in-law went looking for the matches, but she could not find them. Aware that they were dipping into the eighteen minutes, my son suggested she use the extra candle they had to get a flame from the stove, then she should use that candle to light the Shabbos candles. She went to do just that and found out to her disbelief that the flame under the blech was not on. Not being able to find the matches had saved them from having cold food on Shabbos.

Becoming Weigh Smarter Overcoming Long-Term Criticism IMAGINE THE FOLLOWING SCENARIO: You’re sitting outside and enjoying a nice afternoon under a breezy tree, and you are listening to a mother reprimand her daughter, Charny, for two hours. “Why are you so lazy?” she asks.

“Why can’t you go play with the other kids?” Then, a few minutes later, she continues, “Charny, what a lazy girl you are. Go run after your brother and keep an eye on him, will you? You are so lazy — when will you ever change?”

How do you think this child feels? How soon do you think she will change to meet her mother’s expectations — or will she ever? Charny’s brain took the “lazy” statement from her mother and imprinted it somewhere deep in her brain. And now, for years to come (unless she seeks help), she will hear a little voice in her head telling her over and over again that she’s lazy. Chances are you cringed after reading the anecdote about Charny and her mother. You may have questioned the mother’s education, although a select few may have judged her favorably. Regardless, it’s sad to think about how many children are subjected to unfounded criticism, and to picture the long-term effect it can have on their wellbeing.

AFTER TWENTY YEARS of development using the latest technology, a team of the finest engineers and software developers finally produced a device named The Designator. The Designator empowers whoever has control of it to turn plain, ordinary objects into special restricted objects, bringing the full force of the law and tremendous punishment upon anyone who touches that object or uses it in any way except the Designated way.

By pointing The Designator at an object and pressing button A, for example, the object becomes prohibited for anyone to use. By pressing button B, the object becomes prohibited to the one who pressed the button. Button C makes the object only permitted to use in a certain place.

If such a device were ever created, who should be permitted to own one? What would happen if it were misused? The power of this tool is frightening, yet each and every one of us has been created with this very tool in our possession.

It says in this week’s Parsha, “Ish ki yidor neder l’Hashem… — When a man makes a vow to Hashem, or swears an oath to prohibit something to himself, he shall not profane his word; all that his mouth has expressed he must do.” (Bamidbar 30:3) The Shem MiShmuel explains this in the name of his father, the Avnei Nezer, as follows.

“Through a mere declaration, a Jew may dedicate an item to the Beis HaMikdash, or prohibit its use for himself or others. Violation of this vow is considered a grave offense, punishable within the usual Torah framework. The power of speech is sufficient to alter the nature of an object entirely, changing it from something ordinary into a mitzvah object.”

The Shem MiShmuel cites Rabbeinu Yonah that if a Jew is careful to guard his mouth and use it only for holy purposes, then the mouth itself becomes kadosh and adds kedusha to the speech that passes through.

The well-guarded mouth thus becomes like one of the keilim used in the Beis HaMikdash, capable of transmitting kedusha to other objects. Just as flour or oil

that comes in contact with one of these keilim becomes kadosh, the mouth can pass kedusha to speech, and when a person who guards his mouth carefully speaks about another person, his words have the power to be mekadesh that person.

The Shem MiShmuel emphasizes that we have the tremendous ability to be mekadesh the world with our speech, and the Torah admonishes us not to misuse this power by speaking nonsense or uttering vows that we will later profane. We can use every part of our body to do a mitzvah, but only our mouths have the power to be mekadesh.

Why is only the mouth given this special power, and no other part of the body? The Shem MiShmuel explains that Hashem tells us through the navi, “This people that I have formed for Myself, they shall tell My praise.” (Yeshayahu 43:21) The Shem MiShmuel concludes that the purpose of Yisroel is defined by this verse: Hashem created us so that we should praise Him. Therefore, he continues, the power of speech is granted special properties and is, in some ways, the property that is the most similar to Hashem.

This is why it is so important to guard our mouths and use our power of speech properly. When used correctly, the mouth is like one of the keilim in the Beis HaMikdash. Indeed, the Vilna Gaon writes in his Iggeres HaGra, “Your mouth is your Kadosh HaKadoshim.”

In his hakdama to his sefer Chofetz Chaim, the Chofetz Chaim proves that lashon hara was the cause of the destruction not only of the second Bais HaMikdash, but of the first one as well, and lashon hara is equivalent to the three aveiros for which one must give up his life (shfichas damim, avodah zara, etc.)

We are now in the Three Weeks and approaching Tisha B’Av, when both the first and second Beis Hamikdash were destroyed. We daven that the Bais Hamikdash be restored with all of its keilim. May we all help make this happen by guarding our speech, and in the process, creating a keili as kadosh as the keilim in the Beis HaMikdash itself: our mouths.

Warnings and Summonses Issued to Area Walkers, Motorists as Ramapo PD Continues Safety Programs WATCH OUT PEDESTRIANS: It’s not just unsafe motorists who are being targeted by the Ramapo Police Department...

Safety for the town’s walkers has become a high priority since the recent fatal accident that injured three members of the same family and killed a baby boy. The Ramapo Police Department sent out notifications in advance, warning of the July 13th safety crackdown that had police officers hitting local intersections frequented by a large number of walkers. Police warned that there would be zero tolerance in effect during the effort which was designed to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities on local roadways.

Sergeant Blaine Howell of the Ramapo Police Depart-

ment said that the department issued 20 summonses during the one-day program, with 19 given out to pedestrians and just one to a motorist. An additional 12 warnings were handed out to those under 16 who were found to be crossing illegally.

The goal was not to blame or punish pedestrians, reported the Ramapo Daily Voice.

“A lot of factors play into the safety issues, but on Thursday we wanted to concentrate on pedestrians who were not obeying the lights and crosswalks for their own safety and education,” said Howell.

The town will continue conducting similar programs in order to promote greater safety in Ramapo.

Funding Issues Plague Spring Valley Police Department INFIGHTING BY SPRING VALLEY officials has left the village’s police force understaffed and ill-prepared to serve area residents, according to reports by members of the Spring Valley Police Department.

According to The Journal News, only five of the village’s thirteen patrol cars are actually operational, with some bearing odometer readings that top 80,000 miles. The equipment shortage means that the department is “putting a tremendous amount of strain on our membership to maintain the expected level of performance and professionalism that is expected,” said Office Matthew Galli of the Spring Valley Police Department.

Patrol Officer Keith Gonzalez said that some of the vil-

lage’s cruisers have duct tape holding their damaged bumpers in place.

While the village budget includes funding for 64 police officers, there are currently only 44 on staff. Members of the village’s board of trustees, who have been engaged in a long litany of disagreements with Spring Valley mayor Demezza Delhomme, have said that they could resolve the police car issue at the next board meeting but that the number of officers required to effectively serve the village required further study.

“The board doesn’t want to rubber stamp anything,” said trustee Vilair Fonvil.

New Warning System will Protect Rockland Police Dogs in Hot Weather A NEW SYSTEM BEING IMPLEMENTED by the Clarkstown Police Department will protect the force’s fourlegged members from danger during hot weather.

The AceWatchDog™ system will automatically alert police officers whose K-9 partners are inside a car whose temperature has risen above 85 degrees, reported The Journal News. Temperatures can soar rapidly in a locked car in the hot summer months, creating a potential danger for anyone inside the vehicle.

The new system was donated by a Nanuet couple to thank the local police force and will notify both the local

dispatcher and the police officer assigned to the dog by phone. It will also roll down the car’s rear windows and turn on a fan inside the car.

Officer Michael Keane, who works with one of the Clarkstown Police Department’s three police dogs, said that excessive heat can become deadly in a matter of minutes not just for police dogs but also for children, who should never be left unattended in cars for any length of time.

“Unfortunately we get those calls all the time,” said Keane. “The car can heat up and put children in danger.”

“I can’t continue trying,” he said, “but I can start again. Every day is a new chance to start over.”

She nodded, too nauseated now to swallow.

SOUR CREAM SOUP This nostalgic intergeshlugene zip was one of my grandmother’s signature dishes. She would prepare it when her daughter spent her kimput in her home and when her granddaughters convalesced at their mother’s. As much as I tried to recreate this old-fashioned soup, I’m sure some of her unique flavor was lost in the process. But the result was delicious, nevertheless.

CRUST: 1 lb. fresh green beans 4 loose potatoes 2 small carrots 1 medium onion 6 cups water 2 tsp. kosher salt 3 oz. sour cream 1½–2 tsp. fresh lemon juice

DIRECTIONS: 1. Trim green beans and cut into 1½ inch pieces. Cut potatoes into small cubes and slice carrots.

2. Place in a 4-quart pot with water, whole onion and salt. Bring to boil and cook for 40 minutes.

3. Allow soup to cool down a bit, approximately half hour.

4. Place sour cream in a soup bowl and pour in about ½ cup liquid from the soup, mixing with a fork until a smooth texture is obtained. Pour back into soup, mixing well. Add 1½ tsp. lemon juice, or a bit more for a more sour taste.

CHEESY VEGETABLE PASTA BAKE For this filling dish, I use thin soup noodles.

Feel free to use any shape and texture that your family enjoys.

INGREDIENTS: 1 10–12 oz. package noodles, cooked ½ butter stick or 6 T. whipped butter 1 Spanish onion, sliced 1 24-oz. B’gan Capri Blend Salt and pepper to taste 4 oz. whipped cream cheese 2 cups shredded mozzarella, divided

DIRECTIONS: 1. Melt butter in large frying pan 2. Add sliced onions and saute for 5–10 minutes.

3. Add vegetables and allow to cook for 20 minutes.

4. Close flame, add spices and cream cheese. Mix well.

5. Combine with pasta and 1 cup shredded cheese in a 9x13 pan.

6. Spread rest of cheese on top.

7. Bake at 350°, covered, for 20–25 minutes.

ZUCCHINI WAFFLE This light and airy savory waffle can be served on its own or next to a salad.

CRUST: 1 large onion, diced and sauteed in 3 T. butter 2 zucchini, shredded 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 T. baking powder 3 cups flour 1 ½ T. kosher salt ½ tsp. white pepper 1 ½ cups milk 6 eggs 1 cup sour cream

DIRECTIONS: 1. Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.

2. In a separate bowl, combine milk, eggs and sour cream.

Mix into dry ingredients and add shredded squash and onions.

3. Heat waffle maker and spray with oil or smear with butter.

4. Pour approximately 1½ T. of batter onto the grid.

Flatten to cover surface, but do not overfill.

5. Cook 3–4 minutes.

ALMOND FLAVORED CORNMEAL SHORTCAKES SHORTCAKES: ¾ stick margarine

¾ cup sugar

½ cup flour

2 eggs

½ cup yellow cornmeal

¼ teaspoon salt

¾ cup sliced almonds (make sure it is sliced and not slivered almonds)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

FILLING: 1 lb. frozen strawberries

¾ cup whip cream

1/3 cup sugar

DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. In a food processor, blend ½ cup sliced almonds with sugar until finely ground. Add margarine, eggs, vanilla and salt. Blend until well-combined. Add flour and cornmeal and continue blending until just combined.

3. Divide batter evenly among 6 jumbo greased muffin tins.

Sprinkle with remaining ¼ cup sliced almonds. Bake for about 20–25 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out dry.

Cool completely.

4. Quarter strawberries. Combine in a bowl with ⅓ cup sugar. Let stand until syrupy, for at least 20 minutes.

Fettuccine Pasta with Eggplant Fritters ¼ stick Mehadrin Butter 1 small eggplant, peeled and cubed 1 small onion, diced 2 frozen garlic cubes ½ tsp salt 1 egg 1 ½ cup bread crumbs 2 cups Mehadrin Shredded Mozzarella Cheese 2 cups milk 8 oz J&J Cream Cheese 8 oz Mehadrin Sour Cream 1 cup marinara sauce 1 package fettucine pasta/Asian noodles 1 Tbsp oil

IN THIS RECIPE

Heat butter in large skillet. Add eggplant, onion, garlic, and salt. Sauté until soft. Transfer to a bowl and use a fork to mash until no large pieces remain.

In a large saucepan, add milk, cream cheese, sour cream, and marinara sauce. Bring to a boil. Add pasta and cook 8-12 minutes.

Add egg, ¾ cup bread crumbs and shredded cheese to eggplant mixture.

Mix until well combined. Form 1 inch balls, coat them with remaining bread crumbs, and gently pat to flatten.

Fry the fritters over medium heat for 3-4 minutes on each side until lightly browned.

Serve with pasta.

Teriyaki Tuna & Salmon Blend 3 one inch slices tuna steak 3 slices salmon 2 Tbsp Mehadrin Butter 8 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced 3 crushed garlic cloves ¼ cup sesame seeds 1/2 cup teriyaki sauce 3/4 cup Mehadrin Sour Cream ½ cup white wine (or moscato)

IN THIS RECIPE

Cut tuna and salmon into thin long strips.

In a large skillet, heat two tablespoons butter. Add the fish slices and sauté for 5 minutes. Add the sliced mushrooms, garlic and wine; cover and sauté for an additional 5 minutes. Add sour cream, teriyaki sauce and sesame seeds. Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Creamy Potato Gratin 2 oz Mehadrin Garlic Butter 1 medium onion, diced 1 package fresh baby portabella mushrooms, sliced 4 potatoes, cut into 1 inch cubes 16 oz Mehadrin Sour Cream ½ stick Mehadrin Butter 1 cup milk 5 oz heavy cream 2 tsp salt 1 cup Mehadrin Shredded Cheddar Cheese 1 pack Mehadrin Sliced Mozzarella Cheese

Add garlic butter to a large saucepan over low heat. Sauté onions and mushrooms for 5-10 minutes until soft. Add potatoes, sour cream, butter, milk, heavy cream and salt and bring to a boil. Cook 20-30 minutes until potatoes are fork tender.

Remove from heat. Add shredded cheddar cheese and mix until well combined. Transfer mixture to a 9x13 aluminum pan.

Top with sliced mozzarella cheese. Bake on 350oF for 10 minutes, until cheese is melted and slightly browned.

Feta Focaccia

IN THIS RECIPE

DOUGH 1 cup warm water 2 tsp dry yeast 2 ½ cups flour 1 tsp salt 2 Tbsp Mehadrin Butter, softened TOPPING 4 Tbsp Mehadrin Garlic Butter, softened 2 tomatoes, sliced 1 small purple onion, sliced 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced 1 small eggplant, sliced Mehadrin Feta Cheese Handful of fresh rosemary 1-2 Tbsp olive oil Salt for sprinkling

In a bowl, add warm water and dry yeast, and mix until dissolved. Add flour, butter, and salt. Mix until a soft dough forms. Turn dough over on a floured surface, and knead.

Place dough in an oiled bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let rest for 10 minutes.

Divide the dough in two on a greased parchment paper. Pat into long oval shapes, cover with a damp towel and let rise until double in size (about 30-45 minutes).

Heat oven to 375oF. Using a fork, poke some holes in the dough.

Generously spread garlic butter over the focaccias. Arrange sliced veggies over it, then top with crumbled feta cheese and rosemary. Drizzle olive oil and salt.

Bake for 30 minutes or until golden.

IN THIS RECIPE

Onion Cheese Quiche 3 Tbsp oil 2 large onions, diced 16 oz Mehadrin Cottage Cheese 4 eggs 6 Tbsp flour 3 slices Mehadrin Mozzarella Cheese Pinch of salt and black pepper Topping: 3 slices Mehadrin Mozzarella Cheese Basil or Oregano

IN THIS RECIPE

Heat oil in a medium saucepan and sauté onions until golden. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix until cheese is melted and well combined.

Transfer to a 9 inch round aluminum pan. Top with sliced cheese, and basil/oregano.

Bake on 350oF for half hour, until the cheese is melted and slightly browned.

French Toast Cheese Pockets 1 loaf sliced bread 8 oz J&J Whipped Cream Cheese 2 4 oz Mehadrin Vanilla Pudding ¼ cup honey ¼ cup brown sugar Dash of cinnamon 2 eggs ½ cup milk Dash of salt

Blend cream cheese, pudding, honey, brown sugar, and cinnamon until smooth.

Using a rolling pin, flatten the slices of bread. Cut a circle from each slice of bread with a cookie cutter, or anything round. Spoon 1-2 tsp of cheese mixture onto half the slices. Cover them with the other half and use the spokes of a fork to press and seal the edges all around.

Heat oven to 350oF. Whisk eggs, milk and salt. Place the pockets in the mixture for 2 minutes. Line them on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes until top is golden.

Use the remaining cheese mixture as drizzle/dipping sauce.

Optional: Sprinkle confectioner’s sugar and drizzle maple syrup before serving.

IN THIS RECIPE

Piquant Plum Soup 8 plums 4 peaches 1 cup frozen blueberries 1 cup frozen strawberries 16 oz Mehadrin Sour Cream 2 cups orange raspberry passion fruit juice 1 cinnamon stick 1 ¼ cup sugar

Pit and slice the plums and peaches. Add all ingredients to a pot over medium heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low.

Cook for 20 minutes or until fruits are soft.

Discard cinnamon stick. Using an immersion blender, pulse several times, leaving some fruit chunks intact. Serve chilled.

Optional: Garnish with a dollop of Mehadrin yogurt and fresh fruit.

Coffee Cheesecake Blend 3 cups Mehadrin Vanilla Ice Cream 1 8oz Mehadrin Sour Cream ¾ cup J&J Ice Cappuccino 4 oz J&J Whipped Cream Cheese 1/3 cup confectioners’ sugar 4 lotus biscuits ½ bar dairy chocolate, room temperature Caramel cream

Break the chocolate into chunks. Add all ingredients, except the caramel, to a blender and pulse until smooth. Use the caramel cream to decorate the glass, then fill with the drink.

Optional: Top with whipped cream, lotus crumbs and pieces of chocolate.

Cut the ice cream cones into chunks and add to a blender. Pulse until the big pieces are gone, but still chunky.

Carefully remove cheese snacks from packet. Place in oven on 250oF for a bit, until warm.

For the topping, crack 2-3 sugar cones into large pieces. Drizzle melted chocolate and sprinkle nut crunch or any desired brittle over it.

To serve: Put cheese snack on a dish, smear the top with caramel cream and add a scoop of razzle crunch.

Top with sugar cone shards.

The Nine Days is a period of aveilus (mourning). There are several halachos guiding us on how to be mematim b’simcha, beginning from Rosh Chodesh Av, until the end of Tisha B’Av. (Some of the restrictions apply until chatzos of the tenth of av).

Below are some of the halachos that apply to the Nine Days.

Showering, bathing and swimming • One may not bathe or shower during the Nine Days.

• One may wash away dirt from any part of the body.

• If one feels uncomfortable from sweat on one’s body, then one may shower.

In such situations, one should wash with lukewarm water and plain soap.

• One should preferably use a hand shower to wash. If one uses a full shower, one should not wash the entire body all at once.

• Girls who feel uncomfortable with very greasy or itchy hair may wash their hair with lukewarm water and unscented shampoo.

• If one has to go out in public, for example to a meeting, or, one has to be amongst goyim and it will be an issue of kavod habriyos, it is muttar to wash with lukewarm water and plain soap. If one cannot use a hand shower, one should not wash the entire body all at once.

• If one has to bathe for health reasons, one may take a bath in the usual manner.

• One may not go swimming.

• Children and babies under the age of nine may be bathed in the usual manner.

• If one waxes or regularly removes unwanted facial or body hair, one may do so during the Nine Days.

• A kallah who is preparing for her chasunah, may go to the shaitel macher, if it is necessary.

• If one cuts nails every Erev Shabbos, one may also cut the nails l’kavod Shabbos in the Nine Days.

Laundry • One may not wash laundry during the Nine Days.

• However if one does not have enough clothes or undergarments, etc. for children, one may do laundry, preferably with a shinu’i for example, by using the left hand to turn on the washing machine.

• If one falls short of laundry and is uncomfortable wearing unclean laundry, it is more acceptable to wash laundry than to buy new clothing.

• Soiled clothing or laundry that could become ruined or moldy if left standing for too long may be washed.

• One may not iron clothing or any other laundry such as linen during the Nine Days.

Wearing freshly laundered clothes or sleeping on freshly laundered linen • One should not wear freshly laundered clothes.

• One may wear freshly washed undergarments.

• Men who always wear an outer garment during the day, such as a reckel, chalet, waistcoat, etc., may wear clean, permanent press shirts.

• Some are makpid to wear these garments for a few minutes before Rosh Chodesh, specifically people who wear shirts as the outer garment.

• Some accomplish this by putting on one shirt on top of another. There are those who throw the clean laundry on the floor and step lightly on it with socks in order to remove some of the freshness.

• Newly washed outer garments should be worn for at least ten minutes before the beginning of the Nine Days.

• One may not use clean, freshly laundered linen.

If one does not have acceptably clean bed linen, one may use clean non-ironed linen after stepping slightly on them with socks. This applies to someone who is a guest at someone’s house, or at a hotel.

• One should take care to wash linen or bedding on or before Erev Rosh Chodesh, in order to avoid going to sleep on the first night of the Nine Days on freshly washed linen.

Seudas Mitzvah • One may eat meat at a Seudas Mitzvah.

• One may not wear Shabbos clothes at a simcha. One may not wash hair or shaitels for a simcha. A father may wear Shabbos clothes to his son’s bris.

Housework • It is muttar to do regular housework during the Nine Days. One may wash floors during the week if the dirt is visible and one is disturbed by it.

• It is muttar to perform additional housework, such as cleaning out refrigerators, if such housework is performed on a regular basis.

• Beginning from zayin Av, one should only wash floors if they are sticky or dirty.

• One may not spring clean or polish silver.

• One may clean the house l’kavod Shabbos in a manner that she usually does on a regular basis.

• On Erev Tisha b’Av one may not wash floors.

Learning to ride a two-wheeler is a highlight of a young child’s life, but it’s often the dread of many a parent as well. While bike riding is a skill that “once learned is never forgotten,” it may be difficult to teach — especially if the parent doesn’t know how to ride a bike!

Here’s a breakdown of how to teach your child to tackle that two-wheeler.

IS HE READY TO RIDE? Think your child is ready to learn to ride? He just might be. Most kids are ready to learn bike skills at the age of three or four, though some might need additional time and won’t master the skills until the age of six. What exactly is a balance bike, you ask? It’s a bicycle that looks just like the real deal but was manufactured without the pedals. The reason for balance bikes’ popularity lies in the secret of muscle-memory. Traditional training wheels teach the child’s body to treat the bicycle as if it were a tricycle, causing the child to use his upper body to turn the bike, rather than learning to balance and use the weight of his body to change direction. What this means, is that when it comes time to take off the training wheels, your child will have to retrain his brain and body to function in a manner completely different from what he’s already learned.

Enter the balance bike.

By starting your kid off on a bike that doesn’t have its own built-in balancing mechanism, your child will build balancing skills so that when it’s time to learn to truly ride, he’ll be able to focus on tasks like pedaling and braking, instead of retraining his brain.

Train your child to use the balance bike while walking at first, then graduate to picking up his feet to coast. Once he’s got that down pat, you can let him go down mild inclines and work on turning skills.

Turning skills are easily mastered by setting up a line of cones and having your child zig-zag through them.

Before you head outdoors with two-wheeler in tow, make sure that you’ve got everything properly

prepared. Of course, the first step is to get a properly-fitted helmet that was made for your child’s age and size. You can usually find those in the same place you purchase your bike. (For help in getting the perfect fit, flip to FYI.) After that, you’ll need to prepare the bike. Most kids starting on a two-wheeler need a bike that is 14 or 16 inches, though sizing may vary.

You can ask the experts at Toys 4 U to help you get the proper size and make. Bear in mind that too large a bike is always a no-no. Rather go a bit smaller than too big.

Adjust the seat of the bike so that your child is on tiptoes. This will help prevent the pedals from whacking your kid’s shins and calves when they put their feet down.

FIND THE RIGHT LOCATION You’ll want to find a nice, open location that is far from traffic for the first day of learning biking skills. This will give your child the ability to maneuver without fear of falling off the sidewalk or crashing into something (or someone!). Find a place that has pavement, like a big parking lot or a park with paved biking areas.

Many people opt for grass for that first lesson, but the truth is that is much harder to learn on such dense flooring.

Stick to pavement for best results.

BUILD ONE SKILL AT A TIME First focus on the pedaling — assuming that your child has already mastered balance through practice on a bike without pedals. If not, start with the balancing tips listed above.

Teach your child how to get started pedaling by positioning one pedal upward and slightly to the front, the other downward, toward the back. Teach your child to put his full weight on the front pedal and then put his other foot on the lower one. Have him practice this skill while you hold onto him under the armpits, since it’s too hard for many kids to focus on both balancing and pedaling from the get-go. Once he’s a pedaling pro, train him to focus his eyes on the road ahead and not look down. When you see he’s able to focus, balance and pedal all at once, you can drop your hands and run alongside, just in case of falls. Eventually, you won’t even have to do that!

Teach your child to stop the bike’s motion by first telling him to simply put his feet down and out to the sides.

Once he’s mastered balance and pedaling, you can teach him to backpedal or use the handbrakes to stop.

Most kids learn to bike within a day, while others can take a week or more. Just bear in mind that biking is supposed to be fun! Leave pressure out of the equation so that you and your child will build great biking memories! Get out that camera and snap away!

Bikes need maintenance — and sometimes, accessories, to up the fun factor.

Don’t forget to check your child’s bike for lack of air or tear, chain problems or need of lubrication. If you see something that needs fixing, bring your bike into Toys 4 U for heimishe hands-on care. That is why you want to bring it into a bike shop on a regular basis.

Since we carry such a huge variety of bikes — for kids, teenagers, as well as adults and cyclists who ride long distances — there isn’t one bike that’s our bestseller; we have many. ​Every rider is fitted to their perfect bike, depending on their needs and age.

Can you tell us which specific bikes are geared for which ages and stages?

Any bike has to be fitted by a professional at a bike shop, as they have the skill and knowledge. Generally, for little kids, bikes will be more simple so there’s less to break and it’s ​easier to use.

Teenagers and adult bikes will generally have more gears and features for different riding styles.

What ​is the most important feature one should look for ​when purchasing a bike?

​Quality components make the biggest difference. What differentiates a bike-shop bicycle from a department store bike are the components. The more you spend, the better the components.​ What are some signs that a bike may need repair?

If the bike is making any sort of noise that it wasn’t making when you bought it, you should have it checked out by a professional. If the brakes are rubbing, you s​ hould get it looked at right away. A bike should be checked periodically, at least once or twice of year for a regular tune-up.

Maintaining your bike can be compared to your biannual dental visits. When a cavity is neglected, the treatments needed are more complex and more expensive. Neglecting a bike is no different. Problems only get worse and cost more money. So check your bike regularly, and bring it in for repair as soon as the slightest problem arises.

Do you have any specific tips regarding storage?

Bikes ​should be kept indoors​. A shed is a second-best option. If you can’t store it indoors, make sure to get an outdoor bike cover to protect it from the elements.

Can you share some simple maintenance tips?

• Your bike chain should be oiled with specific bike lube, and not with WD40.

• Check your brakes each time before you go out to ride to make sure t​ hey work. If it feels loose, get the brakes serviced immediately.

• Tires should be checked once a week. T ​ he sidewalls of the tire will have a minimum and maximum recommended tire pressure. Inflate them to somewhere in the middle. Or just bring them into the bike shop, and we’ll check for you.

What are some safety tips you’d like to share?

• Wear a helmet whether you’re going across town or just across the street. Helmets should be replaced every few years, as they deteriorate, thus providing less protection for the head.

• ​It’s a good idea to have a red taillight even during the daytime as it will make you more visible to cars.

Our busy season is from when the sun starts to shine in the spring until the snow starts to fall in the winter.

Harriman State Park: I enjoy the quiet, wide roads with good road surface and the fact that there are way fewer cars there.

Rockland Lake h ​ as a three-mile loop around the lake that is closed to cars.

For a longer route, I enjoy the Heritage Trail. It is a former railroad which was paved over, and starts near Monroe in Orange County and c​ overs 12 miles until Goshen.

For a younger child it would most likely be a 16”-bike with training wheels, and between the ages of 5–7 they will often graduate the training wheels. Keep in mind that pushing a child too early may make them afraid, and it makes breaking into biking that much more difficult.

I often see kids’ bikes lying on the floor. One has to be very careful with a bicycle and protect it as much as possible.

And safety is very important. Bicycles are classified as motor vehicles, and you have to take the responsibility seriously. I see too many people riding bikes without helmets, and besides for being a law, please watch your head.

The head is the most sensitive part of the body, and helmets help avoid countless serious head injuries. You have only one brain. Watch it wisely.

First and foremost, you need to look for quality, because most of the bicycles available for sale today at bargain prices are classified as sidewalk bikes only, and should not be used on the road at all. The park is huge with several parking lots. Use one of the addresses at the right for the closest access to their one-of-a-kind playground. What sets their equipment apart is a spider web climbing structure made up of nets, that soars up to 15 feet high with a trampoline at its center.

Their massive jungle gym is also full of fun with rock walls, spans and all kinds of monkey bars. There’s a gazebo near the playground for some shade.

Use 50 Fort Lee Road, Leonia, NJ as your address, make a right at the first traffic circle, go past the wooden bridge and down the road until you hit a second traffic circle. On your right will be the parking lot.

A HISTORY OF HELMETS

Helmets have been around for many, many years. The Assyrians were known to wear leather or bronze helmets in battle to protect their heads from swords, arrows and physical blows.

High-wheel riders of the 1880s realized that head injuries were a risk and created the first biking helmet.

As helmets evolved, designers began adding features like air vents and holes to make helmets ponytail compatible.

In the medieval times helmets were made out of heavy metal, weighing between 4-8 pounds. (And can you imagine how hot it got in there?!)

Helmets only began taking on their current foam-filled design in the 1970s.

The 1980s welcomed the invention of infant/ toddler helmets.

In the early 1900s bike helmets were made of leather straps that wrapped around the head.

Nicknamed “the hairnet” they really didn’t provide much protection from impact.

Though rounded helmets proved through testing to be safest, a winning biker in a race sported an elongated helmet that he claimed to be aerodynamic, which he felt helped him to win. The style took off.

A Swedish company is working on a specialized collar to be worn by riders.

When a fall is sensed, airbags are deployed, surrounding the head with airfilled padding. Will this be the future of helmeting?

GETTING THE PROPER FIT

A helmet that doesn’t fit well can double the risk of head injury. Here’s how to make sure your helmet fits.

Step 1: Make sure the helmet fits snuggly. It should not rock side to side. You can add the provided padding or adjust the sizing ring that comes with some helmets. Remove pads and loosen rings as children’s heads grow.

Step 2: Correctly position the helmet. It should be level on your head and low on the forehead, only one or two finger-widths above the eyebrow.

Step 4:

Step 3: Buckle the straps. The V-shape on the sidestraps should be under and slightly in front of the ears. Tighten strap until it is snug and no more than one or two fingers can be inserted between the strap and the skin.

Check your fit by pretending to give a big yawn. You should feel the helmet pulling down on the head if the fit is a good one. If not, tighten the straps. Make sure the helmet doesn’t rock down into your eyes. If it does, tighten the back strap and tighten the chin strap if needed.

WHY WEAR A HELMET?

Bike-related head injuries are more common than those caused by rough-andtumble contact sports.

The risk for a bike-related fatality rise more than 14 times for non-helmeted riders in relation to helmeted riders.

Every time a concussion is sustained, the chances for a person to develop early-onset dementia rise.

Male riders make up 82 percent of bicycle-related fatalities. Males aged 1014 have the highest risk of fatality from bike-related head injury.

Children 14 and under are five times more likely to be injured in a bike crash than older riders.

An estimated 75 percent of bike-related child fatalities could be prevented with helmet-enforcement by parents and caretakers.

WE’RE GOING AWAY. THIS TIME, I schlep my husband along. Arranging places for the kids might take as much time as the vacation, but I hope the efforts will pay off.

We scour ads studiously and finalize our choice: a quaint apartment in Tzfas with old-style stone walls, and a jacuzzi too. I insist on a two-night getaway, and we depart with our suitcase of belongings and expectations on a Thursday afternoon. I made all my phone calls before the “grand escape” so I don’t spend half the vacation on the phone.

It is truly a dream. The view from the porch is breathtaking: rolling hills with lush greenery all around that beckon by day and sparkle at night. We settle down in the cozy apartment, and then I immediately set out on an important mission: procuring food for our hungry souls. It turns out to be an adventure of its own, and I arrive an hour-and-a-half later with a meal I put together of the finest offerings of the pizzeria, grocery store and bakery combined.

The only pain in the neck is — well, my pain in the neck. I bent over a novel for a better part of the threehour trip, and now I have this annoying crick and no novel — because I finished it.

At night, I lie down with a self-help book I brought along, and try to absorb the advice and suggestions for a while, until I stop. I really need a novel. How can I relax when I’m reading about everything I’m doing wrong?

I opt for the jacuzzi instead. The pressure surprises me, and after a few minutes, I have to shut the pressure valves. Right now I need calm, not intense. I just close my eyes and relax.

My husband is not such a vacation enthusiast. He claims he doesn’t need it, but he came for me and really hopes I’m enjoying. While I studiously try to squeeze every last drop of vacation out of our hard-earned money and the allotted 56-or-so hours, my husband is usually learning (and not even on the porch!).

Isn’t he desperate for a breather? Well, apparently not. There are different kinds of people in the world — not to mention genders. And I am the mother, so I am burnt out. Fathers? Maybe they’re burnt out from their wives’ burnout…

The pressure to maximize our vacation pushes me to go out, get milkshakes, sit on the porch and tour the city until my legs ache. This has to be worth it. But then, I can’t really relax this way. How can you make sure to pack it in while being on vacation mode? It’s all a bit confusing.

I spend practically half of Friday buying ready-made Shabbos food. My husband laughs when he sees the bulging bags I plunk on the table. On vacation, you gotta spend money, and you gotta eat. It’s all part of the package.

Shabbos is peaceful and quiet. I venture out to a scenic spot as the sun sets and breathe in the beauty. The streets hum with Lecha Dodi and Shabbos joy. A few men dressed all in white link hands and dance in the street.

I drink it up. There is holiness and antiquity and sheer beauty that you can practically touch. Now I know it: This spiritual inspiration will follow me home. A jacuzzi is good (although I’ve learned I’m not a fan), and so is great food, but a spiritual experience really endures.

My husband enthuses about the davening in a shul lit up only by candles — oh, and the dancing afterward! The

shul shamash explained to my husband the rationale: the semi-darkness and candles “break the ice” between the diverse people who frequent the shul. In the dark, everyone is less self-conscious. I store that useful piece of information for future reference.

Really, I’m most relieved that my husband also got something out of the experience. I’ve been starting to feel that he’s made humongous efforts trekking halfway across the country just for me, and I don’t like that.

As the sky turns purple Shabbos afternoon, a bleakness overcomes me. It is hard to pack up and leave. I feel like I’ve just been starting to settle into the place and enjoy the peace, and already it’s time to get home and pick

On vacation, you gotta spend money, and you gotta eat. It’s all part of the package. up the kids. With that thought, I correct myself: No, the two days were not that short. Suddenly, the kids seem so far away and I feel I haven’t seen them in a really long time.

That means I’ve really been on vacation.

As we ride home, it’s easy for me to harp on the mistakes and discount the whole experience. Oh, I really don’t know how to do it right. I didn’t bring enough novels, didn’t spend my time well enough, didn’t sleep enough…

Enough.

Isn’t life a learning experience? By definition, that means there will always be mistakes, or experiences to learn from. And just as I learned that pressure to maximize vacation will result in the opposite, focusing on what went wrong will undo everything I’ve achieved over the blessed hiatus.

There’s a lot to be said of letting go. And that has something in common with going on vacation.

HI EVERYBODY! The kids are off, baruch Hashem, wherever they’re off to! Looking forward to a relaxing week with a bit of me-time.

Still waiting.

Maybe when second half starts.

Maybe when school starts.

Or maybe we can make a decision and say, “Right now is me-time.”

Swimming, some sushi, catching up with a friend or a good book.

And we can throw in organizing as some metime. No, no! No rolling your eyes.

THURSDAY, JULY 20: LAUNDRY AREA If you’re reading this in your laundry room, looking around at your spacious cabinets and hanging racks and space for your ironing board and a bunch of counter space to sort and fold, good for you. It is a gift to have more than five inches of folding space, so use it well. However, I’ve seen the cons of the grand laundry area being used only too well.

Like leaving the laundry sitting around for, umm, an undisclosed amount of time.

So that’s why it’s a laundry area and not laundry room.

• Feel free to throw, throw, throw any outdated substances. This place tends to attract all elements from around the house that don’t have a place.

• The ideal laundry area should have shelves on top of the washer and dryer.

• There should be bins for detergent, and softener, Shout and starch.

• A bin for the iron • Some tools in another bin. Not a whole toolbox. Just some handy ones you need around the house.

• Shoe polish paraphernalia in a bin • Sewing supplies • Ribbons and wrapping supplies • Spray paint, light bulbs etc. on top shelf.

• It’s used for a utility area only if you have the shelves and there’s no other room in the house.

• Install a strong hook on the side of the washer for the ironing board.

FRIDAY, JULY 21 SNACK CLOSET Ahem! We have arrived to the most used space in the home.

I’ve done my research. Big bags of snacks do not come out cheaper in the long run and for some reason nobody wants the last few ounces of the bag even when they fought over the first few ounces. If you do buy the big bags, divide them in Ziploc bags for ready snacks.

Small packets look neater in the closet and it’s portion-controlled. Even if you eat three snacks at a time, it’s still portion-controlled — just three portion-controlled portions.

Confused? Nah, you know what I’m talking about.

I’m always talking about bins because that is one of the key reasons closets stay organized.

Especially the snack closet that’s used multiple times a day.

You can get them in a dollar store to start out with.

Candies and jellies or any packets: As soon as something is more than half empty, transfer the remaining to a small Ziploc so you have the space for your next grocery order.

SUNDAY, JULY 23 COOKBOOKS/ CLIPPED RECIPES Hi to all cookbook collectors. Yes I’ve seen places where a separate bookcase has been designated just for cookbooks. I have utmost admiration for moms who read cookbooks instead of novels. Or dictionaries. You know one of those?

However, you don’t put your seforim closet or books in the kitchen for a reason.

Here’s what I propose to you die-hard fans of cooking.

• Ten cookbooks max. But every cookbook you leave in the kitchen should be for a reason.

• Most people end up using three and the rest are just for clutter, uh, I mean decoration.

• Sit down with all your cookbooks and look through them slowly and enjoy your time doing it. Then ask yourself if it’s worth keeping the cookbook in the kitchen for that one time you’ll maybe make that one thing to impress your mother-in-law?

• Clipped recipes are definitely a winner!

Especially the ones from The Monsey View, which I use again and again. (No, they did not tell me to write this). ;) • Get a binder and sheet protectors. Divide it with regular dividers for milchig, fleishig, sides, soups and baking. Keep it simple and basic.

• Index boxes tend to get messy, plus the recipes you take from magazines fit nicely into the binders, so no need for those.

• Do kindly throw out the recipes you don’t use. It’s good for the environment.

MONDAY, JULY 24 WHAT’S UNDER YOUR KITCHEN SINK? Hmmm... okay, I believe I see an assortment of stuff here that doesn’t belong.

First of all, potatoes and onions do not belong under the sink. I’m not sure who invented that idea and started using the space for those things.

So empty everything out. Scrub the shelves.

I’m not a big fan of shelf liners, but for under the sink I use the silicone ones.

Okay, If you have drying racks and you use them, fine. But those are bulky and take up a lot of space and many of you don’t use it. I prefer putting a towel and letting it dry that way. I don’t like extra things if another option is available. So if you haven’t used it in awhile, chuck it. Otherwise stand it straight so it doesn’t take up half the closet.

TUESDAY, JULY 25 TOY CLOSET I recommend doing half by yourself and the other half with your kids.

Half you make the decisions what to give away/throw out. And the other half you give the children choices. Which toy (that wasn’t used in a looong time) would you rather keep: the dollhouse that takes up half the closet and is used maybe twice a year or the 12th memory game that nobody will know is gone?

If you have a tough time parting with toys, put them in the shed before giving it away.

If the toy closet is overstuffed, and I see it all the time, the kids feel overwhelmed and they don’t enjoy what they have as much. They take out ten things at a time and get bored fast, and five minutes later empty the rest of the toys and leave it sitting around.

If there’s a system and everything is in bins and has a place, they will want to help you keep it neat.

Don’t squeeze it in the closet if there’s no space!

I’m very happy you have an abundance of play material for the child, but it ain’t gonna work.

Personally, I think toy shopping is more for the parent than the child.

ecently, a Tehillim Kollel member called us to request that we daven for him at one of Tehillim Kollel’s daily locations, the grave of the holy Ari Hakodesh ZY”A in Tzfas. He shared with us a story that he read in the Sefer “Elef Ksav”.

In the times of the Ari Hakodesh, the Rebbe of Klal Yisroel, there was a yid, a Mekubal, named R”S Haleivy, who would recite the entire Tehillim on a daily basis at the grave of Yirmiyahu Hanavi. One day, while he was saying tehillim, he saw a yid clothed in white, holding a silver trophy filled with water. The yid gave him this trophy filled with water, but R”S Halievy was so terrified by this experience that he fell down and blacked out.

When he awoke, he did not see the yid anymore.

When he returned to the city, his rebbe, the Ari Hakodesh, told him, “You should know that your daily Tehillim made a storm in heaven, and you had the zechus to be Mekarev the Geulah! From heaven, they sent down Yirmiyahu Hanavi, who is a Kohen, and since you are a Leivy, he gave you the trophy water so that you could wash his hands for the Avodah.

Together, you would have brought the Geulah! But we missed the chance!”

The new Tehilim Kollel member continued and said, “This story so clearly demonstrates the power of saying Tehillim on a daily basis at the grave of a holy man. I am sure that your special Tefillos said at the kever of the Ari Hakadosh each day will bring Klal Yisroel so many yeshuos and brachos! Thank you for being our holy messengers.”
