Life’s neither science nor art, my child, but a sprinkling of both. The secret is to strike the perfect balance. And that balance is not something you find. It’s something you create. It’s the product of generations tinkering, experimenting, their trials and errors clearing the path to perfection upon which we embark.

HONEY GLAZED BALSAMIC CHICKEN SKEWERS An Original Recipe by @raizyscookin Kebobs are easy, pretty, and a filling meal! They are great for grilling, entertaining, or just for simple weeknights. These are best grilled, yet we include insturctions for both grilling them outdoors and baking them in your oven. Enjoy!
Ingredients: 8 boneless skinless chicken thighs (or breast), each cut into 3 pieces. (about 3 lbs.) 1 large red onion, peeled, cut through the root into 8 wedges. 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar 1 clove garlic / garlic cube Kosher Salt Black Pepper - freshly ground 2 Tablespoons Honey 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
Directions: GRILLING: Grill over medium heat for 4-5 minutes per side, or until charred and chicken is completely cooked through. Keep on turning the skewers to avoid burning.
IN THE OVEN: Preheat the oven to 375. Stir together all marinade ingredients in a big bowl. Add the cubed chicken and onion to the marinade. Marinate for about 20 minutes, tossing occasionally. Thread 6 pieces of chicken and 1 onion wedge onto skewers. Transfer threaded skewers to a lined
baking
sheet. Drizzle the
remaining
marinate on top of the skewers. Roast on 375 till chicken is cooked through; about 25 minutes. Plate skewers and drizzle sauce on top. Serve immediately NOTE: These are best eaten immediately out of the oven, once rewarmed it loses the moisture that makes this recipe a hit.

I write these lines on Erev Shabbos past chatzos due to its urgency! I just walked through my door, shaking, having walked up Maple Avenue and witnessed two misses, baruch Hashem! The first one was a boy who rode his bike towards Hatzlacha Grocery and b’hashgacha pratis only side-swept my arm and almost tipped over off of his bike, trying to keep up with another half-dozen friends. The other was a boy who came flying out of a driveway and almost hit a car in a head-on collision. Neither wore a helmet. Boys should utilize their free time by having a good time and enjoying themselves. Biking is a very healthy outlet, yet, it says that one must guard his health, hence the need of a helmet is a mitzvah m’d’Oiraisa. What scares me most is that nine out of ten boys I encountered didn’t wear a helmet! It is shocking that a parent would allow their child on a bike without a helmet. These helmets are here to protect us, are they not? A Concerned Neighbor

DO IT FOR YOURSELF My daughter loves going to Finch Park in Ramsey, NJ. She enjoys the sandbox, and every time I go during the week, I see a few local residents there with their children. This past Monday we went and after playing in the sandbox, my daughter decided to go on the slides. I was upset to see many Mayim Chaim water bottles and empty bags of kosher snacks on the ground of the play area. I went around and cleaned up the place, asking myself why this area where frum Jews do not live had so much frum litter and no other litter. I can only assume there are more local residents who frequent the park then Jews. Why do they M&S SHOE REPAIR

know how to keep things cleaner than us Yidden? Please remember, what goes around comes around. If you allow your children to leave litter all over, especially in places where it can create a chilul Hashem, it may come back to bite you in the future in a way that you will be unhappy with. It really is so much easier to make a kiddush Hashem and either throw away your children’s garbage or be proactive and not bring food or drinks to the park so it won’t be an issue. One more thing, regarding Ruach Hachaim park, people should be aware that this park is closed in the morning during the week. Sincerely, B. Klein
RE: THE RACKET UPSTAIRS (ISSUE #102) Dear C.B. , You are 100% right on all points! The fact is that parents of large families have a hard time controlling the noise, even though they know how it bothers other neighbors. That being said, they definitely need to consider which toys may be used indoors. You can’t change existing condos, but for the current and future developments, we can only turn to our dear builders and ask: Please, please, consider the agmas nefesh you can spare families by building wisely and insulating well (the way you would build your own house). Thank you, The Monsey View, for your weekly awaited publication! A Reader

Dear C.B. of “The Racket Upstairs,” Thank you for your well-written letter; I was itching to write a similar one for weeks now! We have a large family living on top of us (we each have a full floor with the same rooms on top of each other…) Let’s just say I honestly pity them for the complete lack of privacy this arrangement gives them. From regular walking around, playing, turning on water etc., we hear it all. We gain a lot of chinuch dos and don’ts from the goings-on upstairs! When the noise gets louder than typical day-to-day stuff (which we had no choice but to get used to), it is very bothersome. A toddler’s bike being ridden upstairs sounds like a train zooming through our apartment. While I know we can’t expect neighbors to curb regular inevitable noise, I believe families living with people under them have an achrayus to limit the unnecessary extra noise that can be controlled — like ball playing, chink chonk (rubber), bikes, extra-loud music and yelling after a reasonable nighttime hour when little kids are usually asleep. In general, special care should be taken over bedrooms to keep the noise level down in the early morning and late night hours, and of course, on Shabbos afternoons. Unfortunately, this problem cannot be solved; the best we can do is to raise awareness and to hope that upstairs neighbors gain a sensitivity and understanding toward their downstairs neighbors and realize how much an effort to limit their noise will mean to them. Hatzlacha, Another downstairs neighbor who knows exactly what you mean
AN OPEN LETTER TO CLOTHING MANUFACTURERS To Whom It May Concern, We, the 8th grade students of Bais Rochel School of Monsey, would like to bring something to your attention. Since we spend a lot of time in school learning about the chashivus of tznius, we’d like to make a request that would enable us to put all those inspiring classes into practice. Please, when you sew and sell beautiful tznius’dige skirts and dresses for us to buy — can you please make them long enough that the taller girls can also wear them k’halacha? Most of the skirts sold in the stores are too short for the average-to-tall girls, and that creates a big nisayon for us. 1. It is very time-consuming and extremely costly to buy add-on material or ribbon to lengthen the skirts. Finding a matching or contrasting piece of material can be challenging. In addition, dressmaking fees are very expensive. 2. Even if you leave enough of a hem in the skirts, very often after taking down the hem, a mark — that cannot be ironed out — remains on the skirt. Thus, the beauty of the skirt is compromised. To benefit the taller girls, you might consider manufacturing your merchandise in two lengths (ranging from 25” length to 29” length). 3. All the abovementioned hassle and expense can be a nisayon to some girls and women who don’t have the resources, knowhow or ability to put so much effort into making their skirts wearable k’halacha. It might cost you a little more, but the schar, the reward, will be immeasurable! Thank you for taking the time to read about our concerns, and we hope something good will come out of it. Sincerely, 8th Grade Girls, Bais Rochel of Monsey
As told to: Basya Lev
ONE THURSDAY NIGHT, I drove into Brooklyn to pick up my nephew for Shabbos. Traffic being what it was, I saw I would not make it home in time to prepare supper for my husband. Using the bluetooth in my car, I called my husband and suggested that if he was hungry, he should pick something up to eat for supper. He said he would have loved to go buy a slice of pizza, but he didn’t have any money on himself. On the way home, I took my nephew out to eat and the place we ate in gave me a scratchoff card. I had won a free slice of pizza, which I brought home for my husband!

Becoming Weigh Smarter The Lowdown on Safe Drinking Water TWO WEEKS AGO WE DISCUSSED the danger of drinking tap water. Today, I would like to discuss the safe alternatives we should be drinking. Take note of the following list: • Spring water • Pure water • Bottled water • Filtered water • Distilled water • Natural water
Now, that’s quite a bit of information, not to mention many different names for water! Since these names can be confusing, let’s take a closer look at our options. The above list may seem like the same thing repeated in six different ways. If I tell you I cleaned my oven, for example, it’s impossible to determine how I cleaned it. I could have used a rag, a rag and water, steel wool with dish soap, steel wool with Soft Scrub or Easy-Off, or a combination of these items. If I don’t explain how I cleaned my oven, you wouldn’t know how I went about it. And more importantly, wouldn’t you need to know how dirty the oven was before I cleaned it? If it was covered with stains and I told you that I simply used a rag and water, you would probably assume I did a lousy job. This leads me to the problem with bottled water. Every company can pretty much write the word “natural,” for example, and include a beautiful picture of mountains and rivers to give you the impression that it’s worth paying a few extra dollars for their bottled water. But really, that doesn’t tell you anything at all. What does “natural” even mean? And what does the word “filtered” say about the specific filtration system being used? Not much! Moreover, while the word “spring” certainly has positive connotations, spring water may be pretty much the same as the tap water from your kitchen sink! Consider the following information. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is an organization that specializes in research and advocacy in the areas of toxic chemicals, agricultural subsidies, public land and corporate accountability. These were some of their findings:
68 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 21, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
After reading this, it almost seems as though no longer drinking water is the safest option!
• 18 percent of bottled water companies do not tell you where their water comes from, and 32 percent do not disclose anything about the treatment or purity of their water. • About 40 percent of bottled water is regular tap water that may or may not have undergone additional treatment. This leaves us with the same toxic chemicals! • An independent test performed by the EWG in 2009 revealed an astonishing 38 contaminants with approximately 10 brands of bottled water containing an average of eight chemicals. Tylenol, nitrates, arsenic, lead, industrial chemicals, disinfection byproducts, bacteria and fluoride were all found. That’s a very high price to pay when you think you’re getting safe, clean water! • The plastic used for bottled water was found to contain the chemical BPA, which is extremely dangerous to our health. It leaches into the water — especially in the heat, once opened, or standing in room temperature for a few days — and is known to disrupt the endocrine system, thyroid function and cause certain cancers. After reading this, it almost seems as though no longer drinking water is the safest option! But that would result in significant consequences too. So let’s explore our options — here is a drinking-water hierarchy I’ve come up with: 1. Choose to drink from glass bottles only. This can be very pricey, but it’s safe. Mountain Valley is considered a great choice, and there are hundreds more to look into. 2. Put water filters in your

home. There are cheaper and more expensive options, ranging from $400 to $4,000. While there are hundreds of companies, what you want to look into are those that filter out all the chemicals and can be tested for purity. 3. Purchase bottled water that clearly states it is BPA-free; alkalizing (with a pH of 7.4 or higher); ultra-purified with at least a seven-stage purification process;
free from chlorine, lead, arsenic, fluoride and other chemicals; and contains electrolytes and minerals added for hydration (note that you can always add mineral drops to your water filter as well). Guess what? I found a company called Core Hydration that meets all the abovementioned criteria. The taste is awesome, and the price is very affordable. Again, there are likely other options as well, so if you decide to do your own research and
find other companies like Core Hydration, share your findings so the public can benefit. 4. Drink plastic bottled water. 5. Resort to drinking tap water.
I hope I clarified the different forms of safe drinking water. Please feel free to reach out with comments or questions.

Korach
By Malka Schneps
REBBETZIN ROSEN* ONCE RELATED to me a story that happened to her husband. Rabbi Rosen had been selected by a national organization to be one of the speakers at an out-of-town community’s “Shabbos of Chizuk.” Soon after his selection was announced, Rabbi Levi* approached him. “I don’t get it. Why did they choose you? I was sure they were going to choose me!” Korach was not alone in his hunger to serve Hashem through another man’s position in Klal Yisroel — in particular, a position of greater honor. To some small degree, we can all probably relate to those feelings, and we must work hard to overcome them. We might think that we could serve Hashem better if only we came from “his” illustrious family, or if only we had the luxury of time that “she” has — or the money, the position, the honor, etc. Rebbe Dovid of Lelov, zt”l, said, “If Korach would have known that he could make a nachas ruach for Hashem by serving Him behind the oven of the beis midrash, and that it would be as special as the service of the Kohen Gadol on Yom Kippur, he would not have made the machlokes.” R’ Elimelech Biderman, shlita, concludes from this statement that each and every one of us has the potential to give Hashem the same nachas ruach as the Kohen Gadol on Yom Kippur, but only by being ourselves. R’ Biderman adds that every single one of us has a unique personal and family background, and a unique set of talents and challenges. When we do the most with what we have, rather than wishing for what someone else has, only then can we bring Hashem a nachas ruach. Indeed, the Mesillas Yesharim begins: “The foundation of piety and the root of perfect avodah is for a man to clarify and come to realize as truth what is his obligation in his world...” Each of us must figure out what our own obligation is in our own world – not someone else’s obligation, and not in someone else’s world. Perhaps this ties in with the Mishna in Pirkei
Avos which states, “Rabbi Elazar HaKapor would say: Envy, desire and [the pursuit of] honor drive a man from the world.” (Pirkei Avos, Chapter 4, Mishna 21) Pursuit of honor comes from a lack of satisfaction with one’s current lot, and thus takes a man out of his world. The Rambam says in Hilchos Teshuva 5:2 that each and every one of us has the potential to be as righteous as Moshe Rabbeinu. Every single one of us! The only one holding us back is ourselves. Many people are too hard on themselves. They do not realize the greatness they carry within. When the Lubavitcher Rebbe, zt”l, began sending out shluchim, he did not use the word kiruv. A rabbi once wrote to the Rebbe telling the Rebbe about his own involvement in “kiruv rechokim” — drawing close those who are distant. The Rebbe wrote back, “You call them ‘distant?’ What gives you the right to say that you are close and they are far? You must approach each one of them as though you are the King’s servant, sent with a message to His most precious child!” This statement applies to the way many of us think of ourselves. We judge ourselves to be distant, thinking that we could never draw close to Hashem. We often think so based on the very circumstances Hashem gave us: We do not come from a family of yichus or Torah, or we are very poor, or we do not have the time to learn more or involve ourselves in more chesed. We must realize that we, too, are Hashem’s precious children. In the story above, Rabbi Levi* was selling himself short by wishing for the honored position that had been given to another. He failed to realize the infinite potential he had to bring a nachas ruach to Hashem by simply doing the job that Hashem had given him, rather than wishing for the job Hashem had given to Rabbi Rosen*. May each of us realize our special uniqueness, treasure it as a special gift from Hashem, and use it bring Hashem a nachas ruach.
Many people are too hard on themselves. They do not realize the greatness they carry within.

Palisades Parkway Nighttime Construction Shifts to Northbound Lanes JUST IN TIME FOR THE BUSY summer travel season, weeknight travelers heading north on the Palisades Interstate Parkway can expect to see lane closures and delays. Ramapo Daily Voice reported that single lane closures on the two lane roadway will start at approximately 8 p.m. nightly, with traffic diverted off the Palisades between Exits 15 and 18 after 10 p.m. Signed detours will be in place to guide drivers back to the highway north of Exit 18, with delays expected in the area as the project continues. While construction is expected to be completed at 6 a.m. daily, in some instances work may extend through noon. The northbound construction comes after similar work took place on the southbound lanes over the last several months and is part of an $11.9 million repaving project announced by Governor Cuomo in March. Officials said that the work, which affects approximately nine miles of the Palisades Park-
way, began on June 19th and is expected to be completed by mid-August. “This stretch of the Palisades is a vital part of this region’s transportation network that is depended upon by Rockland and Orange residents and helps drive the local economy,” said Governor Cuomo. “These repairs will help increase the safety and efficiency on the critical roadway and help keep it viable and in good repair for years to come.” The project will include new pavement markings, sealing joints and cracks in the roadway and cleaning and repairing drainage basins. Rockland County Executive Ed Day said that he was pleased to see the state stepping in to improve conditions on the parkway. “I genuinely appreciate the efforts of Governor Cuomo to move this matter forward to improve safety on this critical roadway,” said Day.
Compromise May Finally End Legal Battles in Kiryas Joel YEARS OF COSTLY LEGAL BATTLES and frigid relationships may finally be coming to a close with a tentative agreement negotiated between Kiryas Joel officials and the United Monroe citizens group last week. Over the last three years, Kiryas Joel has attempted to annex several hundred nearby acres into the village in order to accommodate future growth, but neighbors in the Town of Monroe have opposed the plan, citing environmental concerns and other issues. But an agreement reached this weekend may finally put an end to the bitterness, with the two sides agreeing to spin the Village of Kiryas Joel into a new and as
yet unnamed independent town and removing it from the confines of the Town of Monroe, as reported on VIN News. The new town, the first to be formed in New York State in 35 years, would include an unspecified amount of additional acreage that is expected to be far less than the 382 acres the village asked for in its latest petition to the court. Kiryas Joel administrator Gedalya Szegedin described the agreement, which still has to be approved by local officials and voted on by residents, as “historic,” calling it “a recipe for living side by side in peace and mutual respect and understanding.”
Correction to last week's Week in Review: East Ramapo voters rejected a $232.6 million budget that included a 2.49 percent tax increase last month. The new budget, voted on this week, came in at $231.6 million with a smaller 1.48 percent tax increase of just $151 million.

Bianca would help Henya decide how to help her, wouldn’t she? She was good at running other people’s lives. And even if not, she told herself, her friend Bianca was sick. So… to visit. Henya had rushed the dinner so that the flounder fillet, cabbage lokshen and stirred zucchini lecho were in the fridge, ready, for when she’d return that night. She was feeling dirty with guilt as it was, because this trip… it wasn’t right. But it was. But she knew it wasn’t… She had just applied the final pat to her silk neck scarf when there was a knock at the door. She couldn’t imagine who would be knocking now. It had to be one of the neighbors. Through the etched glass of her storm door, she saw Tilla’s face. Why was she bothering her? The van was leaving in So… her neighbors saw everything. ten minutes. near the thick oak tree, where a boulder marked the center of town. “Tilla—” “I wanted to make it for you.” “I appreciate it. But—” “No problem at all. It was my pleasure. I thought it’s time to sit down and discuss what is happening in town. Crazy, these people. We can’t lose what we have.” What was she talking about? Tilla was talking with an acquired urgency, and Henya had to go. She’d miss the van for sure. They’d never know to wait for her. She still hadn’t even donned her sheitel. “Tilla, what are you talking about? I must go. I have to run and catch the van to the city.” “Oh, so you are avoiding this conversation as well.” “I’m not. I wish I knew what you are talking about.” But Tilla didn’t believe her and Henya felt the fool, being so ignorant. “I was about to tell you,” Tilla looked sad, then guarded. “Tilla, walk with me to the bus stop. Let’s talk on the way.” She ran to scoop up the baby, ran to grab bottles and powder and pacifiers and money, just in case. Tilla was already walking down her cement walk, cake plate still in her hands, the fresh scent of nuts and chocolate spreading like a perfume cloud when Henya caught up, and she was so hungry. How had she forgotten breakfast? How had she served her husband and not taken a bite? Because… Bianca. She always forgot about herself in the face of her friend. “What is it about?” She had to know. Was she the only one who didn’t know? Was it about her? Did people know about Bianca? “It’s just, you caught me on the way out.” “Where do you go every day? Is everything alright with you? We worry.” So… her neighbors saw everything. Unsure of whether to see them as sisters or intruders, she filed away this nugget of bothersomeness to examine later, her hysteria growing. Was it about Bianca? She tried again. “So tell me what this is about.” “It’s about Blima Malka,” Tilla said soberly, the weight squeezing down her words. “And it’s not about her at all. It’s about all of us. We’re all going to suffer if this happens. The shtetl might as well close down. We are nothing if not for each other. I can just see the end.”

What was she talking about? Blima Malka? Henya had never really gotten a feeling of comfort and camaraderie around her. But then again, until Tilla came along, she hadn’t felt it with anyone. “What happened to Blima Malka?” Henya asked. But the van was here, not even stopping. She lunged for the road, holding her right fist out to be noticed. The van garbled over the rocks and rolled to a stop. Tilla helped her onto the van, squeezed her carriage in, pressed the plate of cake into her hands, and waved her off. And there she was, receding around a bend, until her new friend could no longer be seen, but her worry that she’d slapped into Henya’s face over those last few minutes, it stung. She preoccupied herself with worries for Bianca, patting the baby absently until Faivel fell asleep. The way was long. Longer than the first time. She knew that only if she deluded herself would she think of finding fulfillment once she arrived. And here she was. Up several floors, in the hallways, and there, that frail but proud girl, was… Bianca? Up, in the hallway? “Bianca?” She hurried up in a near run, her chest pushing awkwardly when her legs barely caught up. “Bianca.” She would have given this woman a bear hug but stopped short of even patting her arm, her hands wavering midlevel. “Bianca.” Bianca turned to her and away, looking far, at nothing, avoiding her face. “Yes. I am Bianca.” “I was so worried. I missed you.” Henya’s voice trembled on like a sheep. Bianca seemed unimpressed, not even deigning to answer. Her head was covered in a light, floral garden but her eyes, they were icebergs, merely the tip of their coldness seen. Henya remembered what Yosef Yitzchok had said, what she’d refused to hear. You can’t give your power away because nobody is careful with it.

Henya was so hurt. So hurt. She had to make it okay. But… Bianca. She was back in her power. Using ice to freeze a melting heart. “I don’t want to talk to you,” Bianca said. “It’s not good for me. I need to recover.” Henya looked at Bianca closely, eying her wide, disbelieving. “Bi-

Always. I think about you all day.” “And yet nobody would have known about it. You could have come. Called. Wrote.” “I couldn’t. It’s far. I was getting acclimated. It’s been hard. Especially without you.” “Yet you came now.” “I did. Because—” “Because I was sick enough. So you had to. And not for the first time. You also came yesterday. Wasn’t too hard of a trip, was it?” “Bianca…” She held out a hand to the other woman’s arm. Bianca started walking away.
Henya followed. “Bianca.” The woman walked away, entering the doorway to her room. “Talk to me.” Bianca sat in the hard chair Henya had used just yesterday. She said nothing, and Henya waited at the edge of the room. “It was meshigah,” Bianca finally said. Henya listened, her eyes nearly folding, not comprehending, not daring to ask. “It was meshigah then, and it is meshigah now,” Bianca repeated. She shook her head sadly. “It was meshigah.” She lifted her eyes up, searching Henya’s, searching deep in the holes of her eyes, as if with trepidation stepping into a canyon. Finding it too steep, however, Bianca shook her head, resigned, and smiled at Henya. Contented herself with just smiling at the other, less intense, mellower woman. Henya dared not move, not wanting to upset… anything. Not sure what she was part of, she looked back at Bianca, not daring to examine her clothing, her shoes, to find out what, exactly, was making her feel so weird. Scared. Henya might have felt violated under her friend’s scrutiny, except it was Bianca, and Bianca’s look was a homecoming, her acceptance so broad it held all of Henya in it. “This world is a mad, mad place,” Bianca said. In that moment, a completion. Yes. It was all so meshigah. “The only normal ones retaining their sense of reality are those who go insane. From the pain of it, a world tilted upside down, shaken so that the inhabitants fall out, hit the ground.” And it made sense what she said. It made sense. To be continued... Originally I thought I’d present a delicious onion soup in this column, but over the years I’ve come across so many different recipes for onion soup in every cookbook and publication, that I decided to try something inspired by this favorite, yet a bit different and lighter. This creation, with added zucchini and mushrooms, was just the right combination and proved to be an instant winner.

Norman’s has done it again with another Cholov Yisroel first Rutherford, NJ – No bowl, no spoon, no mess! Say hello to the perfect on-thego snack: Norman’s Dairy’s new Greek I.Q. yogurt pouches. No matter where you’re traveling this summer, by plane, train, or automobile, the Greek I.Q. is the smartest way to snack. Toss it in your purse, pack it for a day at camp, or bring it along on a trip to the country. It’s protein-packed and bursting with powerful probiotics to benefit digestion “and make little tummies happy.” So what can be smarter? The Greek I.Q. is the first on-the-go yogurt pouch in the Cholov Yisroel market, as Norman’s demonstrates once again that it is at the forefront of innovation and ingenuity. “In the kosher world it can be hard to find healthy, portable snack options that don’t create a mess or require adult supervision,” said a Norman’s spokesman. “So often timepressed parents will grab a candy bar or bag of chips when they’re running out the door. Usually these snacks are packed with calories and do not really satisfy hunger. Our yogurt pouches feature easy screw tops, so children only need to give them a simple squeeze to reach the yogurt inside. In addition, each pouch is loaded with 8 grams of protein to keep kids fuller for longer, as well as BC30 active live probiotic cultures that don’t lose their efficacy by the time they’re eaten.” The Greek I.Q. yogurt is produced in Norman’s very own state-of-the-art factory, allowing for vigilant quality control and the highest kashrus standards possible. “As the leader in the Cholov Yisroel market we are constantly product testing and dreaming up new ideas. As soon as we trialed the Greek I.Q. yogurt we knew we were onto something, because there is such a need for kosher healthy snacks on the shelves.” Bring it anywhere and enjoy it any time! There are 4 tasty flavors to choose from: banana-berry, smart strawberry, virtuoso vanilla with chocolate bits, and brilliant blueberry. If you’d like additional information on the Greek I.Q. yogurt or any of Norman’s other delicious products, simply head to www.normansdairy.com. It’s just really smart, really good yogurt!

March 24, 2011 The day began as usual at the Rock Island water treatment plant in Illinois, with no sign of anything unusual on the horizon. Workers bustled about, engaged in the various activities that are involved in preparing water for community use. Shortly before 1 p.m., however, the plant was enveloped in sudden excitement when a tanker truck began to leak hydrofluorosilicic acid, also known as fluoride. The leaking chemical quickly began to eat holes into the cement as it made contact with the ground. Due to the obvious danger, employees evacuated the area. An emergency crew suited up in hazmat gear to protect themselves from burns caused by the undiluted chemical, and began working to clean up the spill. Though it took several hours, eventually, work returned to normal. Only patches of dissolved concrete remained as a reminder of the day’s event. It was a shame, really. Perfectly good fluoride had just been lost in the incident — fluoride that could have been put to good use in Rock Island’s drinking water.
THE DISCOVERY The year was 1901, and Dr. Frederick McKay had his eyes set on Colorado Springs, Colorado. There he would open his own dental practice, far from the home of his youth in Massachusetts. Despite his training, however, he was unprepared for a common scenario that met him there: Many of the natives sported chocolate-colored teeth, their mouths testament to some unique environmental force at play in their town. McKay was flummoxed by the prevalence of the condition and dug through all of the dental literature
108 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 21, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
available at the time, but nowhere did he find any mention of this odd condition which was dubbed Colorado Brown Stain. Only eight years later did McKay make headway, when dental researcher Dr. G.V. Black agreed to collaborate with him to discover the cause of this unsightly affliction. Several years of study later and they were no closer to epiphone. They did, however, make several noteworthy discoveries, once of which was that despite the discoloration, teeth with Brown Stain seemed surprisingly resistant to decay. It wasn’t until the 1920s—1930s
that the link between water and Brown Stain began to be suspect. At that time, several other Colorado communities were noticing telltale mottling on their children’s teeth. Parents of Oakley, Colorado were able to directly link the appearance of the stains with the installation of the town’s new water pipe that sourced from a warm spring five miles away. Based on McKay’s advice, Oakley began using water from an alternative spring, and within a few years, the brown stains were no longer found on children’s teeth. Despite this success, McKay was still unable to pinpoint exactly what in the water was causing the condition. While certain towns showed a high rate of enamel discoloration, other towns were inexplicably spared. It was only in 1931 that advanced testing revealed elevated levels of naturally occurring sodium fluoride in certain water sources which were the cause behind Colorado Brown Stain.
THE BIG IDEA After the breakthrough discovery of the source of Colorado Brown Stain, later referred to as fluorosis, Dr. H. Trendley Dean, head of the Dental Hygiene Unit at the National Institute of Health, began investigating water fluoride levels in the hopes of discovering exactly how much fluoride it takes to develop fluorosis. What he discovered was that 1 part per million of fluoride in water (roughly one drop in a full bathtub) was not likely to cause fluorosis in the majority of the population and could cause mild fluorosis in some. Coupling this information with McKay and Black’s discovery that fluorosis patients seemed to have a special resistance to cavities, Dean began to wonder: What would happen if fluoride was introduced to water in a nationwide effort to reduce the rate of cavities? In 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan volunteered to be the lab rat, adding manmade fluoride to their water supply. Several other cities quickly joined the study, and while some noted a drastic decrease in the cavity rates of children, there were no stud-
ies done on the general safety of water fluoridation or its effect on special populations. Despite this, however, American cities began to jump on the bandwagon, with the state of Wisconsin at the helm. By the 1960s, over 50 millions Americans were drinking fluoridated water.
THE BATTLE BEGINS While water fluoridation was gaining popularity throughout the states, naysayers began raising the red flag, worried about the potentially dangerous chemical being added to tap water. Fortunately, the decision to fluoridate was in many instances left in the hands of local governments, allowing each municipality to decide for themselves whether to fluoridate or not. In Rockland County, a fluoridation order was issued in 1978, requiring all tap water to undergo fluoridation. To that end, the Spring Valley Water Co. spent $100,000 investing in fluoridation equipment. For two and a half years Rockland’s water underwent fluoridation. And then, the opposition began. At the head was a local physician who was quoted as saying, “It’s amazing to me that fluoride is still being promoted,” he said. “It’s more toxic than lead — the effort should be to get it out of the water, not to put it in.” In 1981 The Rockland Board of Health convened and voted against fluoridation, leaving Rockland fluoride-free ever since. But what, exactly, are the concerns about fluoridation?
FLUORIDE: FRIEND OR FOE? While much of the world points to the fluoridation of water as a powerful reducer of childhood cavities, nobody can claim that fluoride is, by nature, safe. In fact, everyone admits that it inherently a dangerous substance, used often in rat poison. The benefits, however, of carefully monitored fluoride levels, they say, outweigh the harm of ongoing, daily exposure to the substance. Others beg to differ. Here are their concerns:
Over-fluoridation Easily Possible The U.S. Department of Agriculture determines the highest level of fluoride intake that “is likely to pose no risk of adverse health effects” to be 10mg a day for the average
PARENTS BEWARE!
In 1979 Mr. and Mrs. Clay Kennerly of Brooklyn were awarded $750,000 after the loss of their son to a lethal dose of fluoride. The three-year-old had been taken to the dentist for a routine cleaning — his first — and despite no evidence of cavities, was treated with a fluoride solution that the dentist smeared across his teeth. The child was handed a cup of water, but not told to rinse and spit. He instead drank the water, and with it, the fluoride. The fluoride solution contained triple the amount of fluoride sufficient to cause a fatality. When the child complained of dizziness and headache a few moments afterward, his mother took him for medical care, but he lapsed into a coma and ultimately succumbed three hours later. Fluoride solutions should never be swallowed! (And perhaps, used…)
person, with infants and young children’s maximum intake running in the range of 0.7–2.2 mg a day. Nowadays, though, not only is water fluoridated but most foods contain fluoride as well. In fact, a study revealed that certain brands of grape juice were discovered to contain up to 6.8 parts per million of fluoride! And then, of course, there are fluoride dental treatments, fluoride found in vitamins, and even fluoride in toothpaste. In this generation, fluoride is easily come by — and easily overdosed upon. In the 1950s, toothpastes containing fluoride were required to label their products with the warning that they were not to be used in areas in which water was already fluoridated. Likewise, the mega-manufacturer of toothpaste, Crest, put this warning on their products, “Caution: Children under 6 should not use Crest.” The regulations to put a warning on fluoridated products were dropped in 1958 despite the continued — and heightened — risk of overdose. With common fluoride levels in toothpaste standing at 1,000 parts per million, it is not uncommon for children to ingest up to 2 mg of fluoride a day from toothpaste alone, way beyond the daily max. According to the National Academy of Sciences, ingestion of 2 mg of fluoride a day for the average individual has the potential to result in crippling skeletal fluorosis after 40 years, causing bones to become extremely brittle. Since 1997, fluoride containing toothpastes are required to include information about what to do if a child swallows more than a pea-sized amount. Of course, the most obvious danger of over-fluoridation is the effect on teeth, with that old Colorado Brown Stain raising its ugly discolored head. In mild cases of fluorosis, white streaks or patches of abnormal, lacy white patches appear on teeth, but in more severe cases, the teeth may turn dark brown, gray or black, begin to pit, and even become abnormally susceptible to cavities — exactly what fluoride was introduced to combat! According to the CDC, 41% of children ages 12–15 have some form of dental fluorosis.
June 21, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 109 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
medical care. This is without consent of the individual, and many times, without the individual’s knowledge. How many people even stop to think about their drinking water and what is inside it? Why in the world should medication be found floating around in there?!
Maybe… It Doesn’t Even Work…?
But over-fluoridation doesn’t just affect the teeth, it affects the full body as well. Former Chief Chemist at the National Cancer Institute, Dr. Dean Burk, in conjunction with Dr. John Yiamouyiannis, released a study in 1977 that linked fluoridation to 10,000 cancer deaths per year in America. As part of their study, they compared data between the ten largest fluoridated and non-fluoridated cities and discovered a 5% increase of cancer in fluoridated areas. Another study of the National Toxicology Report observed rats that ingested elevated levels of fluoride. In addition to fluorosis of the teeth, some of the rats developed extremely rare bone cancers. While these studies may not be conclusive enough to say that fluoride is a definite culprit in the rising rates of worldwide cancer, it certainly demands that thinking individuals give pause… In another instance, a case study was conducted on a man suffering from an underactive thyroid gland who exhibited additional symptoms of pre-skeletal fluorosis. Three months after stopping to drink fluoridated water, the man’s thyroid spontaneously regained function. There are also studies that suggest high levels of fluoridation may negatively affect IQ. An analysis conducted by Harvard University and funded by the National Institutes of Health came to the conclusion that areas of high-fluoridation have “significantly lower IQ scores” than areas with low fluoridation. Certain populations may specifically be at high risk of fluoride poisoning and are urged to exercise caution in regards to fluoride intake. This includes children, the elderly and those with impaired kidney function, diabetes, heart ailments or bone disorders. Unfortunately, when fluoride is available in the water supply, as well as in food and beverages, and is absorbed through skin contact via bathing, it is extremely hard to monitor intake. Health officials caution parents to never use fluoridated water in preparing formula for babies, as just one step in protecting against over-fluoridation.
Medicated Without Consent Many opponents of fluoridation point to the simple fact that fluoride is added to water as a preventative form of
110 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 21, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Despite the commonly-cited reports of drastic reduction in tooth decay, there are other reports that suggest that maybe fluoridation doesn’t even contribute significantly to the decrease in tooth decay. A report by the World Health Organization states that decay rates in Europe are sometimes even lower than those in America, despite a 98% non-fluoridation factor. It seems that the decline in cavities in developed countries may have little to do with fluoridation, considering that many non-fluoridated countries are on par with the U.S. We can see that up-close and personal just by looking at our surrounding communities:
Third-Graders Decay Rates in Non-Fluorinated Nassau, Suffolk and Rockland County Nassau = 50%
Suffolk = 54%
Rockland = 46%
Third-Graders Decay Rates in Highly-Fluorinated Areas Monroe = 56% Erie = 59%
Chemung = 55% Broome = 63%
Wayne = 66% Jefferson = 66%
At the end of the day, water fluoridation may not be all bad, but certainly presents significant health concerns.
So while the CDC lists fluoridation as one of the top ten most important public health measures of the 20th century, I’d venture to say that Rockland’s vote against fluoridating our local water earns a spot up there as well. After all, fluoride is a caustic chemical capable of eating it’s way through cement… I’d rather not take chances with overdosing on it. Would you?

Going Soft on Water By: Sandy Eller
IF I HAD TO PICK AN ADJECTIVE TO DEscribe water, the first one that would pop into my mind would probably be “wet.” I know, it isn’t very original, but what can you possibly say about the physical characteristics of water? It is liquid, wet, colorless and if pressed to come up with another word I guess it would have to be “watery.” And then came the day when my sister who lived in Monsey started telling me about how her water was “hard.” Water? Hard? Did that mean that water could be soft as well? Was it a difference that you could feel? Would my own water in Baltimore feel soft and mushy, compared to my sister’s firm Monsey water? To be honest, none of it made any sense, but when I picked up and moved to Monsey in 1990, I found out firsthand what hard and soft water were all about. According to the United States Geological Survey, a governmental scientific agency that studies our country’s natural resources, water is characterized as hard if it has a high content of dissolved calcium and magnesium, and possibly other metals as well. Those minerals typically get into the water supply in areas like Monsey, when rainwater flows over or through limestone. While elements like magnesium and calcium are both essential
components of our daily diet and don’t pose a health risk, hard water can create other problems. According to the May 2017 annual water quality report issued by Suez, our local water provider, water in
our area is classified as moderately hard. Have you ever noticed spots on your glasses when you take them out of the dishwasher? A filmy residue left on your hands after you wash them with soap? Or solid scale deposits on
your faucets or in your hot water urn? All of these are a result of hard water, whose effects can range from unattractive to problematic. While those spots on your glasses may not look all

that nice, they really don’t cause any harm, but the filmy soap scum left behind when soap reacts with calcium in your water renders it less effective and will likely have you using extra soap, shampoo or detergent to get yourself and your laundry clean. More of a concern is that when hard water is heated, it can leave behind solid calcium deposits which can cause clothing to wear out more quickly, damage appliances, lower the efficiency of your water heater and clog your pipes. The best way to reverse the effects of hard water is to get a water softener, a device that gets hooked into your home water line and neutralizes problematic minerals by using resin beads to exchange the calcium and magnesium for a small amount of sodium chloride, also known as salt. The resulting water is considerably softer, solving the aforementioned problems, with the system recharging itself either at preset intervals or when a predetermined amount of water has been processed. The first step in getting a water softener is having your water tested to see if it qualifies as hard. If you live in the greater Monsey area, trust me when I tell you that you might as well just skip this test, because your water is hard and a water softener will definitely improve the quality of your water. You can find out your water hardness level, which is measured in grains per gallon, by calling your local water provider, although realistically speaking, most local companies and stores that sell or lease water

While you can buy a water softener from a specialized dealer, they are also readily available at mass merchandisers including Sears, Home Depot and Lowe’s. Expect to pay anywhere from $400 to $2,000 for a water softener which typically will last for about 15 years, and unless you are good with your hands, you will also need to hire a professional to hook up your system. HI EVERYBODY! The kids come home the last day of school, singing “Last day of school; now we jump in the pool!” and all you’re thinking is: Yes, yes, go to the pool, and take the zillion papers and books with you. How in the world did they have place in the classroom for all these things, times 25 students? I once let the school know how much money they could make by renting out storage space to the students. The idea was so successful that the mothers started bringing their own stuff to the school’s storage. It was so packed that they had to shut the storage room down. So let’s work out a better solution at home. Allow me to explain the process first. Teaching children the art of keeping a clutter-free home starts when they’re young, as does anything we want to teach them. Now is the time to let the kids make simple choices. Let’s take a look at what they’re bringing home: Books, papers, loose-leaf binders, projects and pencil cases with 63½ broken crayons. Sometimes they bring home stuff which make me wonder if they had gone to a garage sale in middle of the year without me knowing and picked up things or if I had actually bought them the first day of school. This is how I do it, and it’s really very simple. I have one large, clear container. Each child gets to decide

on their own what they want to keep, but not more than a shopping bagfull. You label each bag and put it into the container. Name: Malky Grade: 4 Date of school year: 2016–2017
to take it to their own apartment, believe me they’re going to want to get rid of mostly everything besides the yearbooks. But I think we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s plan the kids chasunos in a different article. To a swimmingly clutter-free summer, Sara
It’s funny how certain age groups are so thrilled when school is done, Sara Goldstein is a professional organizer yet they find it very hard to part with and decorator serving the Tri-State area the stuff. And then they want to keep and beyond. half in the house because they want to play school. Comes the day We organize your home to perfection. after school and half the neighborhood is indoors fighting to play teacher. Go figure. Every end of the year I bring out the container and when we organize the current year’s stuff, we go through the bags of the previous years and discard things that were extremely important then, but now the next year’s stuff is more important. Eventually every child will have her own container from nursery until 12th grade. Then when they’re ready

^ Blauvelt State Park Trail Map (only the red and blue trail are shown here.)
Blauvelt is an undeveloped state park (no facilities) with woods, streams, plenty of trails and places to explore. The two main attractions are stunning views from some points, and a system of World War I era tunnels, which were part of the abandoned Camp Bluefields. The camp was originally built in 1910 as a training rifle range, and was used later in 1918 as a training facility for soldiers during World War I. The most fascinating parts that now remain are target walls and three tunnels of varying lengths. Tunnels can be accessed and two of them can actually be walked end to end (not for the faint of heart! Bring a powerful flashlight, as parts are completely dark). Be advised that the trails are not clearly marked.

TO SEE THE RUINS AND ARMY TUNNELS Access via the parking lot at 404 Greenbush Road. There’s limited parking there. This access point is on Greenbush Road, right after Route 303. The trail will start off being paved, on which you will see the ruins of the site of the army headquarters. Follow the orange trail (left) to see the target walls and tunnels (you may have to veer a bit onto the blue trail for a full view), and then take the orange trail back down, where you will come across a stone wall and then hit the paved area that will lead you back to the parking lot.

FOR SCENIC VIEWS Red trail: This connects to the white trail leading from Buttermilk Falls County Park. Or it starts from 942 Bradley Parkway, across Schuyler Town Park. Take the red trail up (you’ll see markings on a tree from Bradley Parkway) and around back, and you’ll hit two high points with stunning views.
FOR THE ENTIRE PARK Take the the blue trail which starts at Tackamac Park in the Town of Orangetown, on 68 Clausland Mountain Rd. in Blauvelt, where you can find parking. The blue path runs through the entire park, first taking you past the tunnels and walls, past stone walls until it reaches a high point with stunning views.

Chapter 1 IT ALL BEGAN AS A “MAKESHIFT YESHIVA”...
Roughly 365 days ago, you joined me in our quest in setting up an educational system for our precious autistic son Chaim. Little did I expect the overwhelming response of your support that would flood me in the 12 months following. The phone calls and letters just kept pouring in, literally filling my inbox and heart to the very brim. Letters of your personal hardships, struggles, of the footsteps in the sand, which you were able to call your very own. And then there was the warmth you showered me with, every contact a balm to my heart. It gave me the strength to move on, push obstacles out of my way. Stumble, yet stand up and go on. For it was a fight I needed to win, and
that would provide for the needs of these suffering children. It couldn’t be too small, required personal space for each of them, yet needed a large enough room for social time. It needed to be colorful, yet not too overstimulating. A place that would provide a safety zone for a lost soul. We set up shop in a beautiful place, with individual rooms for downtime, a relaxed social room with plush seating and a wall length blackboard for the children’s happy creations. Next came the art of individualization. However, an individualized program for each child meant a personal Rebbi and teacher for each student. So began my career of putting
Together the kids would build towers, brainstorm ideas and share dreams... for they knew their dreams finally had the potential of coming true... yes, my dear supporters... we won! And so, now, I feel it to be only fair to share with you the details of my amazing journey, involving trial and error, heartache and triumph, of what evolved our basement cocoon into a beautiful haven for our precious children. There’s a famous quote by Dr. Stephen Shore, a professor who is on the autism spectrum, “If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.” How much meaning and truth these few words have proven to contain! Every child who walked through our door within the past year brought along his own set of challenges and weaknesses. Where one would be jumping on the trampoline while learning, the other would be deep into his books, oblivious to the world around him. Where one would be talking nonstop, the other would be reserved and scared. We needed to make this work. The first step was to find a place
together a staff that would suit the personality, challenges and unspoken language of our children. Some of them are English speaking, others speak only Yiddish... We needed to make sure every child feels secure with his staff member and learns in the same havara as they are comfortable with. Thus we interviewed, matched and then assessed each child’s comfort level within the staff member’s presence. Our efforts were to create that perfect match, ensuring that if a child were an especially gentle soul, he was treated with like-minded methods, whereas if another needed more structure, he was able to receive just that. Then came the evaluation process. Of figuring out where each child stood, academically, behaviorally and socially. We were challenged with designing a program that tackles all areas of development so that the kids would be able to grow and develop into the best little boys they could potentially be.
The beginning was rough, as our precious children brought with them so much pain that they carried in their hearts. But our wonderful staff rose to the challenge by building their little charges’ trust, and beautiful relationships were born, between staff and student, and eventually, between student and student. What started out as short social intervals often filled with aggression and hurt, slowly became joy-filled journeys of each bringing out the very best in his friend, by complementing the other’s weaknesses with his own strengths. Together the kids would build towers, brainstorm ideas and share dreams... for they knew their dreams finally had the potential of coming true... That’s when we knew they could be pushed even further. So we set up a classroom for them and they began learning to adapt to a classroom setting while concentrating on the academics being taught. Now that required a double effort on their part... efforts in concentration, classroom skills and of sitting quietly while their friends had a chance to speak. It took time, great sweat on their part, but did I tell you our children are little heroes? Yes, they made it with flying colors. How do I know, you ask? It’s the smiles, the contented faces, the children telling stories of acceptance, of love. Of truly being the best they can be. Locked inside the bodies of a tiny caterpillar, they have finally found in themselves the amazing courage to spread their beautiful wings and fly towards the future they dream about each of their 365 days every year! Perry Kiszner is the mother of Chaim and the founder of The H.O.P.E. Oasis, a not-for-profit organization that is working towards educating Monsey's extraordinary children who are falling through the cracks within the mainstream system. She can be reached via email at perrykiszner@gmail. com or at 845. 288.1884.

Of the 30 billion plastic water bottles sold in the U.S. in 2005, only 12% were recycled — that means 26,400,000,000 bottles went to the landfills. What you may think is money earned on bottles (and cans) that are recycled, is actually a refund on a bottle deposit you already paid when purchasing your drink. Looking for a supplemental income? One person made $1,500 cashing in soda cans he collected at work.
In the making of a plastic bottle, twice as much water as fits into the bottle is used.
The 10-cents-per-bottle recycling rate offered in Michigan prompts people to illegally smuggle in empty bottles purchased out of state to double their rewards.
Since many people don’t bother collecting their refunds on bottles, it’s easy money for bottle and can collectors.
While there are stores (among them Target, Costco and ShopRite) with reverse vending machines for cashing in used bottles and cans, according to New York’s Returnable Container Act, also known as the “Bottle Bill,” any vendor or store has to accept returns of the brand/size containers they sell. They may limit it to 240 containers per day (or 72 if it’s a smaller establishment) but only if that’s clearly posted. Or if they may have a clearly posted written agreement with a redemption center within a half mile of their store.
In California, tap water costs about one-tenth of a cent per gallon, and bottled water about 90 cents per gallon. That makes bottled water 900 times more expensive!
In 2007, Aquafina (Pepsico) had to change their label to reflect that their water is derived from local municipal tap water sources. They started using the term “Purified Drinking Water” and added a disclaimer that their water comes from a “public source.” It is estimated that if tap water would cost as much as the cheapest bottled water, your monthly bill would easily run into $9,000.

I know! I’ll watch the beis midrash, and see what’s going on when no one is inside.
I must figure out who is hiding these mysterious notes
Chana stood by the window for hours, not budging from her spot.
The only one there after learning times is Shalom who tidies up the beis midrash. Could he be the one?
If so, why didn’t my father think of it?
He’s a simple bochur, not a lamdan...
But could it be?
I’ll have to wait patiently and track his every move.

Real Estate Loan Fraud IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK, the FBI arrested a local attorney who was accused of lying to bank and law enforcement officers to hide the fact that she actually lives in New City, instead of Monroe. The U.S. Attorney’s office accused Town Justice Lurlyn Winchester of faking a lease and rent checks two years ago to make the mortgage lender believe she and her husband were planning to rent out their New City home. It is alleged in the indictment that she applied for a mortgage to purchase a condominium in Monroe to satisfy the residency requirements to maintain her position as a judge. She applied to a local mortgage broker. During the processing of the application she did not qualify for the loan due to insufficient income. She then supplied a lease on her current home in New City for $4,500, and she also provided proof of receipt of the security deposit and first month’s rent totaling $9,000, which she deposited into her bank. Based on this information, she closed on the purchase. She is being accused of not moving into the home in Monroe and not renting out her New City home. She is also being accused of providing the $9,000 to the proposed tenant who then gave it back to her to satisfy the bank’s requirement of proof of receipt of the first month’s rent and security deposit. Mortgage fraud is a federal offense. With the technology available today, it is very easy to detect fraud. Today’s fraud is not the reporting of false income, fake pay stubs, falsified tax returns or inflated assets. One of the highest growing mortgage fraud is occupancy fraud. It seems so easy. Despite signing a document stating that the borrower will move into the home within 60 days of the closing, how many times are there seller lease-backs (when the seller rents the home back from his buyer), a phenomenon that’s becoming more and more popular? If the time period is more than 60 days, then the loan is a fraudulent loan due to the occupancy. Or if a buyer is planning to move in, but not now, in a year and they will be renting out the house in the interim.

Why would a borrower purchase a home as an investment property when they are actually moving in? The reason is simple qualifications.
Or the other way around: The buyer asserts that they will not be living in the house and purportedly will be renting out the home, and then they move in. That is also a fraud. Why would borrowers commit this fraud? Let us go through the simplistic reasons. Buying a owner-occupied home affords the buyer certain benefits. 1. Lower down payments. 2. Lower rates. 3. The allowability of gift funds for the down payment and closing costs. 4. The borrower may qualify to participate in First Time Home Buyer programs. 5. Borrower can have a nonoccupying co-signor. Why would a borrower purchase a home as an investment property when they are actually moving in? The reason is simple qualifications. When purchasing a home as a rental investment property, the rental
income that will be received can be used to qualify for the new mortgage. An example is as follows: A specific buyer who comes to my mind who is making less than $60,000 a year can qualify for a $250,000 loan, owneroccupied in the Rockland area. As an investment purchase, he qualifies for a $465,000 loan. The reason is that they pay no rent since they live in a home belonging to a family member. Therefore, their housing debt is 0 and all their income and the rental income is being used. Readers of this article need to understand the severity of mortgage fraud. The borrower can get arrested. The lender who closed the loan will have financial consequences. If it can be proven that the lender and/ or its loan officer and/or employees were complicit in the fraud, the lightest consequence is that they will lose their jobs. They can be banned from working in the industry, they can be indicted and face jail time and the loan officer will lose his license. On a good note, it is possible to obtain a mortgage legally. I urge all prospective home buyers and ones who wish to refinance to speak and or meet with a qualified mortgage loan officer in advance of finding a home so that the proper steps for the loan structure can be put into place.
