More Life Magazine is a collection of stories, resources and innovative ideas that relate to the experiences of people of color affected by breast cancer. Presented

by The Missing Pink Breast Cancer Alliance, our vision is to equip those facing the worst disparities and the people who care for them with the knowledge of support available beyond their backyard. And to inspire community leaders to implement policies and practices that move the needle on health equity at the local level.

While this first edition has a strong emphasis on the experiences of Black and Latino/Hispanic people affected by breast cancer, it is my hope that through the power of partnerships More Life Magazine will not only emerge as a go-to resource, it will become a connection point for change agents, and a larger reflection of hope and possibility for all communities of color.

Three Generations, One Fight: A Family’s Story of Love, Strength and Hope One out of eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, but between my mom Penney, Grandma Bettie, and I, we defied the odds with a surprising two out of three.

The first time my grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was in middle school. I remember watching my dad cut her hair in the kitchen as it began to fall out from the chemotherapy. We threw an extra special birthday celebration that year and I had the honor of coordinating all the pink decorations.

A few months prior at a work event, I learned how to dance my finger tips in a circular motion around my breasts to check for changes. So, I took off my clothes and did the closest rendition of a self-breast exam that I could.

The second time, I was in highschool. I remember the concern in my mom’s voice when she shared the news that the cancer had returned. I have zero memories of seeing Grandma Bettie sick. I only knew Mom would frequently visit Grandma Bettie to take her Ensure and make sure she was okay.

But not long after that diagnosis, we celebrated the completion of Grandma Bettie’s active treatment, and again all was well.

When I felt the hardness of my breast and saw the discharge release from my nipple, I was more than concerned – I was 25 and I was scared.

More than 20 years had passed between Grandma Bettie’s first and her most recent diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. Now, I understand not all breast cancers are the same. I understand not all treatments work the same way. I understand not every person has the same access to care.

I understand caregiving is so much more than “making sure someone is okay.” And I know this because a couple years before her third diagnosis, I received an unexpected diagnosis of my own.

LOVE ALWAYS HOPES.

One spring day in 2016, while standing in the mirror wearing a ribbed tank top, I observed one breast was noticeably larger than the other. I knew no one had perfectly even breasts, but my left breast looked slightly swollen.

Suddenly, the signs I had reasoned away felt like indications of something more serious. The pain in my breast was almost constant, not linked to my menstrual cycle like I once thought. Having large breasts most of my life, I thought the stains in my bra were the results of fallen food, but I realized the stains were only in one cup.

The first person I called was my mom – the caregiving cornerstone in our trio. When I passed a mammogram and ultrasound and the doctor told me I was “too young to have cancer,” I called her then, too. And when months passed and the symptoms got worse and I decided to see a different doctor, she started coming to the screening appointments with me.

A few days before the results of my biopsy, I woke up singing “It is Well” by Bethel Music and a peace reassured me that no matter the results, everything would be okay. I was bracing myself for the news, but my mom stood firm in her belief of a positive report.

I was 26 years old when I walked into the doctor’s office for the results. My ex-husband, Mom and I, made jokes to ease the tension of the moment.

But when the words “We found cancerous cells” filled the air, I looked to my mom in disbelief.

“Who was the doctor talking to?” I asked.

“What happened to being “too young?” I thought.

My mom looked stunned.

And when I cried, she consoled me.

From that moment on, our relationship was never the same.

LOVE IS KIND.

Growing up, there were seasons where our relationship was complicated and strained, but as I got older, she became my best friend and I looked forward to spending time with her. But I never appreciated how strong and incredible my mom is until I experienced her love and care for me after my bi-lateral mastectomy.

Managing my pain, monitoring and stripping the drains in my chest, lifting me up to go to the bathroom and get in and out bed, washing my hair, helping me shower and the list goes on.

For months, she was by my side and she didn’t have to be, honestly.

I was married.

I was grown.

I was “independent.”

I did not want to need the help I so desperately needed.

But I was loved, am loved, and her love would not allow me to feel defeated by the circumstances.

Her love prayed the heavens down and opened doors to healings my doctors have no natural explanation for.

It inspired me to worship when I was feeling discouraged by the frequent hospitalizations in the years that followed.

It encouraged me to build businesses to give hope to other women facing breast cancer.

It got her behind the wheel for a last minute trip to Orlando so I could experience the magic of a Young Survival Coalition summit.

It even gave her strength for matching breast cancer tattoos on my first cancerversary – she was absolutely one and done.

Her love was ever present and kept me lifted when times are challenging and uncertain.

LOVE ALWAYS PROTECTS.

It was a hospital visit for a urinary tract infection (UTI) that led to the diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer for my grandmother.

By this time, I was already a breast cancer advocate for young women and women of color affected by breast cancer. So when the doctors told my mom the news, it was me trying to explain the meaning of the diagnosis over the phone. And when the doctors tried to start treatments without a biopsy, it was me that raised a red flag and asked how they could start treatment assuming the subtype of the cancer.

With much advocacy and support, for nearly six years Grandma Bettie lived with metastatic breast cancer with no treatment side effects and no evidence of disease.

But in the spring of 2023, a strange rash appeared on Grandma Bettie’s stomach under her breast, followed by lumps on her neck.

“It’s shingles,” they said.

“Nope, just body yeast,” they guessed.

“It’s definitely not cancer,” claimed a doctor as he felt the lumps.

But none of their answers made sense to me. So, I continued to tell Mom to show the symptoms to different doctors and finally, told her to pursue a biopsy.

The results came in. The cancer had spread.

And with other health complications, we were now forced to navigate options for new lines of treatment and long-term care.

The news of the progression came shortly before another hospital stay that left Grandma Bettie’s legs significantly weak. Doctors recommended she have two full-time caregivers upon her release. But when we realized the long-term care facility would not allow her to receive the new cancer treatment, nor would they offer her rehab to help her walk again, Mom decided to do what she could as long as she could.

Mom believed Grandma deserved a chance to live and live well.

LOVE ALWAYS PERSEVERES.

My mom is not new to caregiving. In many ways, she’s spent most of her life caring for others. As a child, it was her mom who struggled with mental illnesses. By 18, it was my brother, Destin, whom she had in high school.

and fuzzy.” But despite the emotional distance Grandma could create with harsh words and actions, it was never enough to stop my mom from moving mountains for her if she could – and move mountains she did.

After a rough few days of caring for my Grandma, Mom broke down and I stopped saying what I felt, that this was too much for her to do alone, and decided to pray instead.

I prayed God would give her clarity and peace, and allow her to operate in love with wisdom and discernment. She realized she couldn’t care for Grandma full-time and continue using unpaid leave.

So she kept her plan of getting Grandma physical therapy, and getting Grandma as many treatments as she could before transitioning her to a long-term care facility.

I prayed that God would bless her with financial provision to see the desire of her heart fulfilled.

While she struggled with navigating her job’s benefits, her family unexpectedly took up a love offering, empathizing with the sacrifice required to take care of Grandma Bettie.

I prayed God would give her favor and that His love and compassion would be shown to her through others. With the help of my friends at Project Life, a virtual wellness house for the metastatic breast cancer community, they found my mom a caregiver mentor, someone who understood the journey she was on and the tough decisions she had to make.

Determined to find a way to get Grandma access to her treatment, Project Life helped us understand our patient rights, which allowed us to win the fight to get Grandma access to her cancer injections while in the long-term care facility – the new line of treatment is working by the way.

I prayed God would give her strong hands and willing helpers because caring for my grandma was entirely too much for one person. I was compelled to move back home to help my mom in the transition. With the help of a physical therapist, Grandma walked for the first time in weeks and soon she was walking with little assistance. And thanks to a home care nurse, mom could run errands freely or rest during the day a few times a week. With more hands on deck, we started to see Grandma make progress – progress I wasn’t sure would be possible, but Mom always did.

LOVE NEVER FAILS.

Breast cancer has reshaped the way we rely on one another.

There is a language the three of us speak that’s made up of doctor appointments, scans, lab results, aided bathroom trips, and the desire – and need – to share the burden of all, physically and emotionally.

It reversed roles and created dependencies we never had before.

When breast cancer takes a shot at one of us, we move together to dodge the blow or face the impact.

The relationship between my mother, grandmother and I was forged in the fight to do more than survive, but to thrive in the face of breast cancer. A fight to not give in when times are hard and the deck is stacked.

A fight to believe God is able and greater is always possible. And a fight to love – and be loved – through it all.

THE more YOU KNOW Family history: The risk of breast cancer in women is higher if they have a first-degree relative, such as a mother, sister, or daughter, who has had breast or ovarian cancer.

Additionally, having multiple family members on either the mother‘s or father‘s side with a history of breast or ovarian cancer increases the risk. Having a first-degree male relative with breast or prostate cancer can also increase a woman‘s risk.

Genetic predispositions: According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, about 5% to 10% of breast and 10% to 15% of ovarian cancers are hereditary. Hereditary cancer means cancer runs in your family, and could be caused by a genetic mutation (change in certain genes) that you inherited from your mother or father.

Young breast cancer: About 5% of breast cancer diagnoses occur in women under the age of 40 and young women are more likely to find their breast abnormality themselves.

The American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging recommend women receive a breast cancer risk assessment at age 25. According to the Cleveland Clinic, younger women who have breast cancer may ignore their symptoms because they believe they are too young to get breast cancer. This can lead to a delay in diagnosis and poorer outcomes. Some healthcare providers may also dismiss symptoms in young women or adopt a “wait and see“ approach, emphasizing the importance of young women knowing their normal and advocating for themselves.

Caregivers: While caregivers tend to be bighearted and well intentioned, they can often neglect themselves to care for others. Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that can be accompanied by a change in attitude – from positive and caring to negative and indifferent. It can occur when caregivers don‘t get the help they need or when they try to do more than they are physically or financially able to. Symptoms may include fatigue, stress, anxiety, and depression.

To manage caregiver burnout, it‘s crucial to prioritize self-care. This involves setting personal health goals, such as a healthy diet and regular exercise, scheduling time for relaxation and social activities, and seeking professional help when needed. Also, caregivers can benefit from joining support groups to share experiences and coping strategies. Leveraging respite care services can also provide temporary relief, allowing caregivers to take a break and recharge.

Ageism cancer: Age adds an additional layer of complexity to cancer diagnoses, creating barriers to quality care for people over the age of 65. In addition to symptoms often being mistaken for agerelated illnesses, older adults are more likely to have chronic conditions like high-blood pressure and diabetes.

THE POWER OF CHOICE: How Shopping Smart Can Lead to Better Health

We often think fancy products make us look good. But did you know they can also harm our health?

I had a chat with Dr. Dede Teteh and Tiah Tomlin-Harris about how some beauty products can increase the risk of cancer, especially for Black people. Even though these items might make us look and feel better, they can secretly damage our health. But don‘t worry - we can do something about it.

The beauty industry has been called out for not including all skin tones and hair types. Women of color often don‘t have many options that suit their unique needs. Plus, many products out there contain chemicals that can harm our health and the planet, including increasing our chances of getting cancer.

Dr. Teteh, an Assistant Professor of Public Health, has been studying the relationship between these products and Black identity for almost ten years with community partners. One study showed that many didn‘t know about harmful chemicals in

beauty products. Plus, many black women didn‘t want to stop using their favorite products, even if they could be dangerous.

For many black women, hair is a big part of who they are. The idea of giving up certain products was met with anger and other emotions. But Dr. Teteh says more and more people are starting to talk about these harmful chemicals, thanks to news reports and growing awareness. This move towards safer, non-toxic products is empowering and helps address the specific needs of this diverse community.

Dr. Teteh is continuing these types of conversations with community members and research colleagues through the Bench to Community Initiative.

WHAT EXACTLY IS ‘CLEAN BEAUTY’?

STARTING AT HOME: LEARNING ABOUT SAFE BEAUTY PRODUCTS

‘Clean beauty’ is a term that‘s been popping up a lot recently. People are becoming more aware of the health risks linked to beauty products. But Dr. Teteh warns that ‘clean beauty’ might not be as simple as it seems.

Big companies have started using ‘clean beauty’ to sell more products. The term suggests these products are safe, but it‘s often just a way to attract people who care about their health. This can mislead people trying to make healthier choices.

Also, ‘clean beauty’ usually only refers to makeup, leaving out other daily-use items like hair and skincare products, even cleaning supplies. These can also contain harmful chemicals.

That‘s why Dr. Teteh prefers terms like ‚‘non-toxic’ or ‚‘safer product selection.’ These cover more than just makeup and stress the importance of being mindful of what we put on and in our bodies, from dish soap to sprays.

Men should also pay attention to this. They can be exposed to harmful chemicals through their personal care products too. As Dr. Teteh says, research shows that black men, like women, need to be aware of the chemicals they‘re exposed to.

“Even though ‘clean beauty’ sounds nice, we‘re really talking about teaching people to choose safer alternatives,“ said Dr. Teteh.

“It‘s about reducing the harmful substances we come into contact with every day. It might not sound as cool as ‘clean beauty,‘ but it‘s a super important discussion for everyone who cares about their health.“

STANDING UP FOR SAFER PRODUCTS

Tiah, a breast cancer survivor and CEO of My Style Matters, adds a personal touch to this issue. After being diagnosed in 2015, she started replacing potentially harmful products in her home with DIY alternatives. This made her question the safety of the products she had been using and how they were affecting her body.

Tiah‘s path to smart shopping wasn‘t easy. At first, such changes were seen as strange in her community. But after her diagnosis, she understood the importance of being health-

Tiah believes that understanding our bodies and the things we use on them is really important. She runs an organization called My Style Matters and her Breast Health Matters program teaches young girls and women about how their bodies work and how some products can affect them.

When girls hit puberty, their bodies change a lot, including their breast tissue cells becoming more sensitive. So, Tiah‘s team teaches these girls about these changes and the risks of using certain products. They hope this early education might help girls make healthier choices in the future.

The girls also learn how to use mobile apps like Detox Me to scan products and see what‘s inside them. This knowledge can help them influence their families to choose safer products too. They are even encouraged to think about careers in creating safer products for black women, extending the reach of their education. In addition to education, My Style Matters provides non-toxic care packages to women in active treatment to kickstart their journey to choosing safer products.

There are other resources out there as well for selecting safer products, such as the Non-Toxic Black Beauty Project and the BLK + GRN All-Natural Marketplace. These platforms not only guide people towards healthier options but also support communities of color by putting money back into them.

TAKING IT TO THE LAWMAKERS

Tiah and Dr. Teteh support the Safer Beauty Bill package, which is a group of four bills that aim to protect people who are most exposed to harmful chemicals, like nail care and hair salon workers.

These bills also want to make product labels clearer so everyone knows exactly what they‘re using.

While changes in laws can take time, there are different organizations working towards safer product laws in various states. This shows the need for everyone to work together – through personal actions, education, and advocacy – to make a safer future possible.

Ready to make a change? Here are some tips to help you switch to safer, non-toxic products: •

Use apps like Clearya, Detox Me, or EWG’s Health Living and Skin Deep databases to learn about harmful ingredients in beauty and personal care products. Look out for chemicals like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, formaldehyde, and synthetic fragrances.

Try out smaller brands that may use safer ingredients.

Join online communities or social media groups that talk about safe beauty products and share your concerns and questions.

Start by changing your everyday items, like cleansers, moisturizers, and hair care products. Later, you can switch your makeup, detergents, and cleaning supplies too.

Think about making your own skincare or haircare products with natural ingredients. You can find many easy recipes online.

Remember, it‘s okay to start small. Even reducing the number of products you use can be a step towards better health.

Project Life Opens Doors to Wellness for MBC Community Interview by Jasmine Dionne Souers

In a world where support for people living with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) can be difficult to find, Alycia Villasana, a metastatic breast cancer thriver, found a safe haven at Project Life. The innovative virtual wellness house that addresses the unique survivorship needs of individuals living with metastatic breast cancer that’s redefining what surviving truly means.

In 2003, Alycia‘s life took an unexpected turn when she discovered a lump in her breast. After enduring a lengthy process of diagnosis and treatment, Alycia was labeled a survivor of stage 2b hormone-receptive breast cancer. Although people told her she had the “good“ kind of cancer and to “move on with her life,” her cancer journey was far from over.

Years of battling health issues, enduring unexplained pains, and breathing problems eventually led to a metastatic breast cancer diagnosis in December 2019. With metastasis in her lung and lymph nodes, Alycia started a new round of treatment while simultaneously being the primary caregiver for her elderly parents.

The year 2020 brought additional changes as the pandemic forced Alycia to close her childcare program due to health risks, leaving a void in her life.

It was during this search for purpose and support that she discovered Project Life.

Unlike many survivorship programs that exclude those in active treatment, Project Life recognizes the importance of supporting the MBC community throughout their experiences after a metastatic/terminal diagnosis in a holistic way. Recognizing the ripple effects that an MBC diagnosis can have on those around the patient, they‘ve created programs specifically tailored to caregivers and are exploring ways to better meet the needs of the LGBTQ+ community.

The leadership team, all living with MBC themselves, understands the challenges faced by the community and aims to fill the gap left by traditional medical systems and survivorship programs. By prioritizing quality over quantity, Project Life provides small, targeted educational opportunities, such as cooking classes, the Ask the Expert series, and personalized legal clinics. The goal is to create a supportive online community where individuals can find hope, healing, and personalized support tailored to their unique survivorship experience. Through initiatives like virtual open houses and mentorship programs, Project Life strives to meet the specific needs of each person, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.

Alycia‘s first class, “Expressing your feelings through color summer series,“ provided a safe space for her to

acknowledge and embrace deep emotions, with unwavering support from fellow Project Life members.

Engaging in healing circles, yoga, art therapy, cooking classes, and more, each session becomes a unique and personal experience that makes her life better. But her involvement with Project Life goes beyond participation. Alycia‘s life with MBC has transformed into a journey of advocacy and mentorship. As a mentor, she aspires to guide others through their own MBC journeys, ensuring they feel seen, heard, and supported.

“Project Life offers a safe and inclusive space where I can truly express myself and connect with others who understand the unique challenges of living with MBC,“ said Alycia.

The resources and guidance provided by Project Life have been invaluable in helping me navigate this complex journey.

Taking their cues from the community, Project Life also recently debuted an Advocacy Boot Camp specifically for those MBC patients feeling left out of cancer advocacy efforts and are utilizing peer mentorship and personal connections to help those graduates find their advocacy niche.

Project Life, as Alycia passionately describes, is much more than an MBC support group; it is an everevolving community that offers a variety of resources. Alycia encourages anyone grappling with MBC to explore the incredible offerings of Project Life, where a nurturing community awaits with open arms.

From Diagnosis to Degree: HOW INFINITE STRENGTH HELPED A SINGLE MOM ACHIEVE ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Today, Marlena Murphy provides mental health therapy to people diagnosed with breast cancer at TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation. But in 2017, Marlena’s life looked very different.

Marlena‘s day-to-day life was a bustling whirlwind.

She worked as a dedicated federal background investigator. Her work days involved locating records and interviewing subjects and their acquaintances.

On top of her demanding career, she was a devoted single mom who volunteered at her daughter‘s school. She cherished time with friends, traveling to new places, and reconnecting with nature on hiking adventures.

During her annual wellness exam when she turned 40, her doctor opted not to recommend a mammogram. The decision was based on the absence of any family history of breast cancer and the potential for false positives.

THE POWER OF A WOMAN’S INTUITION

But Marlena discovered a lump in her breast while showering six months later. Although she could only feel it when she raised her left arm, she intuitively knew she needed to have it checked out. Her primary care physician confirmed the lump and suggested an ultrasound. But the earliest appointment was a month away. This left Marlena uneasy, inspiring her to push for an earlier date. Fortunately, her primary care doctor was able to secure an earlier appointment.

As Oprah Winfrey once wisely stated, “A woman‘s intuition is her guardian angel.“ And this sentiment certainly held true for Marlena.

The ultrasound and subsequent needle biopsy confirmed her suspicions – she had breast cancer.

The news was not surprising. But Marlena was unprepared for the complexity of the diagnosis and the difficult journey ahead.

Marlena‘s diagnosis was triple-negative stage-three breast cancer in her left breast. “Triple-negative“ refers to the absence of receptors commonly found in breast cancers. Unfortunately, a triplenegative diagnosis limits the effectiveness of certain treatments and often requires a more aggressive treatment plan. Moreover, the cancer had already spread to nearby lymph nodes.

BEING OPEN TO SUPPORT

Throughout her treatment, Marlena leaned on her network of family and friends for support.

Marlena recollects, “I had people come from out of town. I had my family, church members, and friends.

So, literally every single time I went to treatment, I was not by myself.”

It was an unsettling yet necessary lesson for her – to allow people to be there for her. Marlena says, “I’m the person that people tend to lean on. [I had to] allow people to be there for me [and] it was uncomfortable.”

Due to the intensity of her treatment, Marlena had to leave her investigator position. Yet, amidst this setback, another opportunity presented itself.

Friends and family had long encouraged her to become a counselor. She had a lot of reasons at the time why she couldn‘t, but her cancer diagnosis gave her the space to reconsider.

A NEW GOAL TO ACCOMPLISH

A year and a half after completing treatment, she took a leap of faith and enrolled in a three-year counseling program. She took out student loans and began driving for Uber Eats to keep some income

coming in. She also began working part-time as a cancer patient advocate.

Then, four years after her initial diagnosis and two years into school, life took an unexpected turn. Both she and her physical therapist noticed unusual swelling in her left breast.

Once again, she was scheduled for a mammogram and ultrasound more than two months away. Instead of accepting the first appointment, however, she advocated for herself and secured an earlier appointment. Her intuition was right again. Cancer was detected in her left breast and under her right armpit. This time, the diagnosis was stage 4 metastatic breast cancer (MBC).

Marlena was angry and frustrated. She was only two months away from starting an unpaid internship, a requirement to graduate. She remembered how exhausting chemotherapy was the first time around. And she wasn‘t sure she would be able to manage both the treatment and the internship at the same time.

Nonetheless, her determination propelled her forward.

As expected, the time commitment for the treatment and the internship was significant. Marlena had to cut her UberEats driving hours and reduce her hours as a cancer patient advocate. As a result, her income was cut drastically.

THE FINANCIAL IMPACT OF CANCER CARE

With six months left until she completed school, Marlena was running out of funds.

Marlena’s financial situation, it turns out, is quite common. According to breastcancer.org, almost 48% of the women in a 2018 study reported that breast cancer caused financial problems for them. And while both black and white women were included in the study, there was a significant difference between the percentage of black women (58%) vs. white women (39%) who stated that breast cancer caused them financial difficulties.

The researchers concluded that a primary cause for the financial issues was lost income after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis.1 Undiscouraged, Marlena leaned into her network, and a door opened for her. A colleague from GRASP, a cancer patient advocacy group, suggested she look into Infinite Strength.

FINDING HELP AND HOPE WITH INFINITE STRENGTH

Infinite Strength was founded by breast cancer survivor Roberta Lombardi. She considered herself lucky because her cancer was caught early. And she could afford the lifesaving treatment for her cancer. But she knew she was a rare patient.

During her treatment, she became aware of a painful reality. She heard other patients questioning whether they could continue treatment because they were on their own and had bills to pay. Others considered not continuing treatment to save their families from further financial struggle.

She was frustrated that women were having to choose between treatment and keeping their families housed and fed. So, she founded Infinite Strength. The organization’s aim was to provide financial relief to women diagnosed with breast cancer.

But, Roberta quickly realized the process for awarding

financial help was broken. It wasn‘t truly helping women and families. Most organizations offering financial help to cancer patients serve patients with all types of cancer. So, they frequently have many people requesting support. As a result, the amounts awarded are not enough to truly relieve the financial burden.

According to Roberta, “Giving someone $1000 one time, that’s not enough. Sure, you’re helping them for one month, but then the next month they’re back with the threat of eviction” or another hardship. Realizing this, Roberta knew that to really make a difference, Infinite Strength needed to get specific. This specificity is what sets Infinite Strength apart from other organizations. Infinite Strength exclusively serves single mothers with metastatic breast cancer, and they’re committed to complete financial assistance for the women they serve.

For women who qualify, Infinite Strength provides six months of assistance, up to $1000 each month.

The six-month time frame is key because it gives women the time and space to figure things out and find additional resources.

While financial assistance typically ends after six months, the emotional support continues. As Roberta says, “[The women are] always with us, [they

are] always in our system. We make sure everyone that we support…knows…they can come [to us]”.

A driving force for Roberta is to support and protect children after their mom receives an MBC diagnosis.

“I think these kids who have seen their moms struggle financially and health-wise, the worry that is placed on them…[is] soul-crushing,” Roberta says, “If we can show them that there’s a community that cares for them and isn’t gonna let them just be homeless and turn a blind eye, then to me that’s what we should do.”

“I think that if kids grow up feeling that support from the community, I think it can change their future.

I think it can change how they look at the world,” Roberta continues.

A DREAM NOT DEFERRED

For Marlena, the financial assistance from Infinite Strength was a lifeline. She received her first assistance amount in December. With her upcoming graduation in May, she knew she would be able to start working and have an income again. The financial help from Infinite Strength provided a bridge crucial to her completing treatment AND fulfilling her dream of becoming a mental health counselor.

emotional stress while trying to go through school and go through [my] internship [was very important]. [With my internship] I needed to be in a space where I [could listen to clients] and not have…to worry about how my bills are gonna be paid and make sure my roof is over my head.”

Navigating Breast Cancer Beyond the Binary

After graduating from Montclair State University in 2020, Cindy Bernard (she/they) was finally fulfilling their life purpose by teaching English at a high school in Newark, New Jersey. In Cindy’s words, “I love working with freshmen because it’s such a cool age.

They‘re transitioning from the eighth grade to high school, and learning some independence. I was at a very high point in my life.”

Everything was going great in Cindy’s life until they found themselves feeling more tired than usual. “I started feeling a strange pain radiating from my back to my arm,” said Cindy. Thinking nothing of it, Cindy shrugged it off and took some Tylenol. But then a few days later they felt a lump in their breast.

They went to the hospital thinking it was just an abscess that could easily be removed. Initially, the doctor thought it was just a cyst, but one of the nurses knew something was wrong. After an ultrasound and biopsy, Cindy was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 29. A genetic test revealed they had an inherited genetic mutation called BRCA 2 that increased their risk for breast cancer.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SELF-ADVOCACY

As a non-binary person, meaning their gender identity falls outside of the traditional gender binary structure of girl/woman and boy/man, Cindy had to navigate another layer of challenges with their healthcare provider.

From the consistent use of gendered terms of endearment to the assumption, and push, for breast reconstruction after the recommended mastectomy, Cindy was a little “off-put” by interactions with their oncologist.

“Although biologically I’m a female, I don‘t identify as a female. So there was a barrier there,” Cindy said.

But they stood firm, seeing the mastectomy as an opportunity to embrace their whole identity.

According to the National LGBT Cancer Network, LGBT people often face ignorance and discrimination in healthcare. One study revealed, on average, medical students receive under 5 hours of training on LGBT issues in their medical education. The lack of education and awareness can create barriers

Cindy Bernard between patients and even the most well-meaning providers. Organizations like the National LGBT Cancer Network have developed trainings for healthcare professionals like Welcoming Spaces, and provide guidance to help LGBTQ+ patients advocate for themselves as they navigate healthcare.

LEARNING TO ASK FOR HELP

Like many young survivors, a cancer diagnosis can change the dynamic of relationships.

“I’m a people person, so I love hanging out with people. But during that time, I felt like I lost a ton of people in my life.” Cindy stated. Many of Cindy’s friends and family didn’t know what to say to them or how to support them when they learned of their diagnosis.

Cindy explained, “During that time when I was on chemo and having all those surgeries, I just stayed home. I slept a lot and snuggled with my dog. And that was my life.”

The simple act of admitting they needed support from their loved ones wasn‘t so simple for Cindy. It took a year of trying to do everything on their own before they decided to do things differently.

“So basically I‘m not the type of person to ask for help. I like doing things on my own, but eventually, I just ended up going into a dark place. And I reached out to friends to let them know how I was feeling,“ Cindy admitted.

Their friends and family stepped up, accompanying them to medical appointments, checking in regularly over the phone, and even flying in from out of state for support. But the process was not straightforward for Cindy. They had to learn how to communicate their needs, something they found challenging due to their outgoing but private nature. “For me to tell them, ‘Hey, I would love for you to go to the appointment,‘ they would have had to say, ‘Oh, maybe I can go to one of your appointments.‘ So, I‘m still trying to figure it out, but it‘s a work in progress and it does make a huge difference when it comes to asking for help or accepting the help.“

FINDING A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE ONLINE COMMUNITY

Despite being proactive about their mental health and attending a support group for depression, Cindy felt a lack of support in navigating life after a breast cancer diagnosis. She sought a community where they could connect with younger individuals going through similar experiences, and that‘s when they came across Young Survival Coalition (YSC) online.

YSC is a nonprofit organization that strengthens the community, addresses the unique needs, amplifies the voice and improves the quality of life of young adults affected by breast cancer. This organization became a lifeline, connecting them to a new friend they interact with daily.

While Cindy hasn’t attended YSC’s LGBTQIA+ Virtual Hangout yet, they enjoy the monthly All Survivors and Thrivers Virtual Hangout so much, they wish the meetings were more often. “I wish we could have it like every week,“ said Cindy. “It‘s amazing how many women join and I‘m the type of person that I like to use my experience to help others.“ Cindy hopes to have the opportunity to put her experience as a group facilitator and mental health first aid to help other members of the YSC community one day.

We‘re amplifying the voices that have been muted for far too long - the voices of minority breast cancer patients and survivors. Leading this chorus of change is Marissa Thomas, CEO of For the Breast of Us, and her team of Baddie Ambassadors. Their mission? To transform the conversation around breast cancer for minorities and to create a beautiful symphony of hope, strength, and unity.

For many years, the narrative surrounding breast cancer has been dominated by a single voice, leaving women of color feeling unseen, unheard, and unsupported. The experiences, struggles, and triumphs of these women often go unnoticed, creating a void in our understanding and approach to breast cancer care in minority communities. Marissa Thomas, a breast cancer survivor herself, recognized this glaring gap and decided to take action. In 2019, She co-founded For the Breast of Us, a pioneering platform dedicated to empowering, educating, and supporting women of color affected by breast cancer.

At the very core of this initiative is the Baddie Ambassador program. The term ‘Breast Cancer Baddie‘ isn‘t just an expression; it‘s a badge of honor, a symbol of resilience, and an emblem of strength.

Instead, they‘ve chosen to use their experiences as a megaphone, reaching out to others navigating similar paths and providing them with guidance, support, and most importantly, hope.

BREAKING THE STIGMA

One Man’s Resilience in the Face of Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a widespread concern, but there‘s a side to it that often goes overlooked. While male breast cancer only makes up less than 1% of all breast cancer cases, it‘s a reality we shouldn‘t ignore that hits Black men the hardest.

Garry Davis, a man living with metastatic breast cancer, shares his story to encourage other men to be proactive in taking care of their health and support those who are diagnosed with what many have misperceived to be a “woman’s disease.”

AN ACCIDENTAL DISCOVERY

Garry‘s journey to a breast cancer diagnosis began in an unexpected way. While his wife was giving him a chest rub, she noticed a lump on his right side. This discovery caught them off guard and left them both puzzled about what it could mean.

Luckily, Garry‘s wife works in the healthcare field, which helped him get an appointment with his primary care doctor the very next day. When the doctor mentioned the possibility of cancer, Garry couldn‘t believe it at first.

“I had no idea that men could get breast cancer,“ he admitted.

But as the news sank in, he had to confront the potential reality.

Despite the weight of the situation, Garry didn‘t let the fear of cancer overwhelm him. He saw himself as a fighter and survivor. Garry‘s healthy lifestyle and his age, around 57 or 58 years old at the time, gave

him the confidence to handle the challenge. With a positive mindset, he decided to face the diagnosis head-on.

DEVELOPING A GAME PLAN

“After the biopsy, we had to wait for the results. The specialist confirmed that I indeed had breast cancer and it had spread because it wasn‘t caught in time,“ Garry shared.

Garry‘s experience isn‘t unique. Many men, like him, get diagnosed with breast cancer at later stages.

Often, this is because people aren‘t aware that breast cancer can affect men too and not just women.

Garry‘s treatment journey kicked off with a six-month round of chemotherapy. During this time, his wife reached out to different cancer treatment centers to get second opinions and more information.

Garry‘s advice? “Don‘t rely on just one opinion.“ He felt his first oncologist wasn‘t as involved as he‘d hoped, so they sought a second opinion from a doctor who was not only well-reviewed but genuinely cared about his condition. This new doctor had connections with specialists at a local research hospital, which would later turn out to be a gamechanger.

Garry gives a lot of credit to his wife for helping him navigate the complex world of medical decisions.

MAINTAINING NORMALCY THROUGH TREATMENT

Garry managed to keep a sense of normalcy in his life while going through treatment. He found humor in the possibility of losing his hair due to chemotherapy because he‘d always been bald. His weight stayed steady, and he didn‘t deal with much nausea thanks to medication. “I kept working. I knew I had to go through treatment, so I took some time off work, but it didn‘t stop me from functioning,“ Garry explained.

Apart from some minor side effects, he managed to keep moving forward. And things were good until he started to develop neuropathy around the fifth month.

A CHANGE IN TREATMENT PLANS

Neuropathy, a nerve-related issue, led to a change in Garry‘s treatment plan. Chemotherapy was stopped, and he began taking Tamoxifen, an oral hormone therapy medication. However, Garry wasn‘t a fan of this treatment because of its impact on his life.

He explored a clinical trial as an alternative, but unfortunately, he didn‘t meet the criteria.

Over the next couple of years, Garry continued with the oral medication, but his condition took a turn.

“The tumor was growing, and I was experiencing intense discomfort in my bones. The cancer had

spread to my bones, and by January 2023, the pain became unbearable. I had to start using a cane to get around. The medication I was on just wasn‘t working,“ Garry shared.

A SECOND CHANCE AT CLINICAL TRIALS

Thankfully, Garry‘s doctors found another clinical trial that was a perfect fit for him. “I began this new clinical trial in February 2023, and it‘s been a gamechanger. I can walk, exercise, and even work in the backyard. It‘s a complete 180-degree shift from how I felt back in November or December of the previous year,“ Garry said with a smile.

Participating in a clinical trial wasn‘t a decision Garry and his wife took lightly. They did extensive research and talked to others to understand the possibilities.

Even though they didn‘t know anyone personally who had been in a clinical trial, their determination to find the best treatments motivated them to explore this option. “We trusted each other and were open to trying new treatments. We scoured the internet for information and spoke to people running clinical trials to gather as much knowledge as we could,“ Garry explained.

FINDING STRENGTH IN SUPPORT

At first, Garry was hesitant to join a support group, but his perspective changed with encouragement from his wife‘s friend. “I was unsure initially, but as I started exploring online and getting involved, I realized how beneficial it can be,“ Garry admitted.

His experience inspired him to advocate for more men, particularly Black and African American men, to break the silence and become part of support groups. Garry‘s journey was significantly impacted by his involvement with the Male Global Breast Cancer Alliance. This alliance created a space for Garry to connect with other men who were going through similar challenges. This connection provided an opportunity for him to learn from their experiences and gather practical insights about various treatments. “Listening to others‘ stories was enlightening, and I found a lot of value in learning about new treatments, like one for neuropathy,“ Garry shared.

Garry draws his strength from his unwavering faith and active involvement in his religious community.

“I‘m deeply religious. My relationship with God has grown stronger during this time. I‘m also part of a men‘s group at my church where we pray daily,“ Garry shared. The support and shared faith of this group have been invaluable to him.

CANCER CAN BE OVERCOME

In the face of challenges, Garry radiates positivity and strength. He has some powerful advice for others who might find themselves in a similar situation: “Stay positive. Hang in there. There are many effective treatments and skilled doctors available. Do your research, ask questions, connect with support groups, and learn from the experiences of others.“ Garry wants everyone to know that a breast cancer diagnosis isn‘t a death sentence; it‘s a call to action and resilience.

Garry remains optimistic about the future, foreseeing even more promising treatments on the horizon.

“New advancements are happening all the time.

Today, breast cancer is more treatable than it was in the past because of increased research and funding.

Perhaps, one day, we‘ll find a cure.“ Garry Davis‘ story shines a light on a lesserknown aspect of breast cancer -- its impact on men, particularly Black men. His courage and determination stand as an example of hope, dispelling the stigma surrounding male breast cancer. “There‘s no need to feel ashamed,“ Garry asserts. “If it hasn‘t happened to you, take charge of your health. While it can happen, remember, it can also be overcome.“

Because men are born with a small amount of breast tissue, they, too, can develop breast cancer. For men, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 833.

Male breast cancer is most often diagnosed in men in their 60s.

Exploring the Integrative A Patient Guide to Conventional and Holistic Healing

We all encounter pivotal moments that transform us into our true selves. Such a defining moment occurred in my life in 2021 when I was 38 years old. At the peak of my physical fitness, having just earned a well-deserved promotion, and celebrating 14 years of marriage with my husband, life was seemingly going as planned. Little did I know that a daunting and terrifying battle awaited me.

Being told “you have cancer” changes your life forever. Life is a tapestry woven with controllable and uncontrollable events. In August 2021, during a routine self-examination, I discovered a small lump.

Although I had no symptoms, I trusted my instincts and promptly scheduled an appointment with my doctor.

As the days turned into weeks, I anxiously awaited the results. Finally, on November 1, 2021, at 4 PM, the wait was over.

I was filled with optimism, but my doctor’s words shattered my hopes and brought my world to a standstill: “You have invasive ductal carcinoma,” she said.

A rush of thoughts flooded my mind.

I can’t die now; there’s still purpose left in me.

I felt betrayed by my own body because I thought I had done everything I could to stay cancer-free.

Yet, in that moment, I joined the 1-in-8 women who would be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

I made the decision to undergo a double mastectomy, hoping for a quick recovery, reconstructive surgery, and a return to normalcy.

But life had different plans.

The cancer had spread to my lymph nodes, extending my anticipated two-month journey to 12 months. Sixteen rounds of chemotherapy, 30 radiation treatments, and four surgeries awaited me.

FINDING SOLACE IN HOLISTIC HEALING

Recognizing the importance of holistic healing, I sought various coping mechanisms beyond conventional treatments. During and after my treatment, I found two amazing organizations—Cariety and DoCancer—that provided complementary care for patients. Their partnerships and free wellness programs were tailor-made to help patients excel both during and after treatment.

Mind-body techniques played a significant role in my healing journey. I incorporated practices like

meditation and journaling to calm my mind and process my emotions. I also embraced a healthier diet and exercised regularly to strengthen my body. Exploring natural methods, I turned to acupuncture, which helped alleviate treatmentrelated side effects and improve my overall energy levels. Massage therapy became a nurturing ritual, offering relaxation and relief from physical and emotional tension. Additionally, I attended psychotherapy sessions that provided invaluable support in navigating the mental aspects of my journey and embracing the rollercoaster of emotions.

In a world where strength is often equated with invincibility, Ashley Wood‘s story reveals the profound burden that being strong can bear, especially for Black women. Ashley‘s tale is one of love, sacrifice, and the devastating consequences of hiding one‘s pain behind an appearance of resilience. As we dive into the heartfelt account of Ashley‘s mother‘s diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer, we uncover the collateral damage caused by delayed treatment and the enduring struggle for Black women to overcome the expectation of unwavering strength.

Ashley‘s mother, Yvette “Tracy” Woods, was more than just a parent; she was a pillar of support, a teacher, and a central figure in her life. Her unwavering belief in Ashley‘s dreams propelled her to start her own photography business, an endeavor she couldn‘t have pursued without her mother‘s encouragement and guidance. Their bond was unbreakable, built on a foundation of trust and openness.

But unbeknownst to Ashley, her mother was grappling with a hidden illness. In her role as the family matriarch, her mother, Tracy, cared for everyone, attending to the needs of her children and siblings. But beneath the surface, her health was declining. Ashley began noticing subtle changes in her mother‘s behavior—constant donning of tank tops and extended periods spent in the bathroom.

These seemingly innocent signs were the first hints of a serious concern.

Then came the day Ashley will never forget. She stumbled upon her mother, unconscious in the kitchen. The large mass on her arm, once thought to be a “cyst,“ was revealed to be a tumor that had been left unchecked for far too long.

Ashley‘s heart ached as she wondered why her mother had chosen to bear this burden alone. Their relationship had always been open and honest, making the silence surrounding her mother‘s health

concerns all the more bewildering. It was a painful reminder of the societal pressures faced by Black women, expected to be everything to everyone— to be the rock that supports, the nurturer that comforts, and the strength that endures.

Ashley believes the delay in diagnosis was a direct result of her mother‘s reluctance to burden her family.

But the consequences of this decision were dire.

Treatment was delayed, allowing the cancer to spread and lowering Tracy’s options for effective treatments. The news that chemotherapy might be too much for her already weakened state sent shockwaves through the family and they were forced to face the reality of a shorter life expectancy.

Yet, even in the face of such dire circumstances, Ashley‘s mother refused to give up hope. She insisted on going back to work, finding peace in the familiarity and routine it provided. At first, Ashley and her father, Dwayne Woods Sr., and brother, Dwayne Woods Jr., opposed this decision, fearing that it would worsen her mother‘s condition. But they eventually realized that work was not only a source of distraction for her, but also a lifeline—a way to maintain a little normalcy amidst the chaos of illness.

Radiation and chemotherapy became a part of their everyday lives, but as time went on, the treatments seemed to lose their effectiveness. Ashley watched helplessly as her mother‘s strength waned, but the love from their immediate family was stronger than ever.

Ashley was inspired by the love and support her father demonstrated to her mother, a reminder that true love is worth waiting for. Her aunt, Jennifer Barry, gave Tracy the freedom to just be a little sister without worrying about the needs of their extended family. In her final days, Ashley‘s mother was admitted to hospice care. Though weakened and less communicative, she remained aware of the family members who came to visit, a testament to her enduring love and connection to them.

And in her final act of trust, she bestowed upon Ashley the responsibility of planning her funeral—a heavy task that Ashley tackled with pride.

She emphasizes the importance of self-care and avoiding the trap of shouldering the burden alone.

Her newfound eagerness to travel and to experience life to its fullest is a testament to the enduring impact of her mother’s love and support. And while the pain of her absence will always be felt, Ashley is determined to live a life that honors her mother‘s wishes and carries forward her spirit.

The cultural and societal expectations placed on Black women to be strong can create a barrier to accessing necessary healthcare and support. The fear of burdening loved ones, the fear of being perceived as weak, and the fear of not living up to the expectations can lead to a detrimental delay in seeking help.

Body and Soul:

A Journey of Self-Discovery After Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a journey that no one willingly embarks on, but it can often lead to life-changing transformations. For Dulce Santiago-Montoya, a woman full of positivity and resilience, this journey became a path to self-discovery and a deeper love for herself.

In March 2015, at the age of 33, Dulce was diagnosed with stage 2b HER2+ breast cancer. But by September of the same year, a more serious diagnosis emerged—stage 3a triple-negative breast cancer. Her treatment plan included 21 weeks of chemotherapy and a partial skin-sparing mastectomy. Yet, despite these intense treatments, her tumors persisted, requiring further treatments and radiation.

Dulce’s healing journey wasn’t merely physical—it was an emotional transformation as well.

Before her diagnosis, she lived a life centered around pleasing others, particularly her husband. She had married young and tailored her lifestyle to fit her husband’s expectations. But when he left her in December 2016, Dulce’s world shifted.

Feeling abandoned and struggling with low self-esteem, especially after another relationship ended, Dulce chose to fight back. Instead of succumbing to depression, she embraced self-love with the help of her friends.

The physical impact of breast cancer initially left Dulce feeling like “the bride of Frankenstein,” questioning her worth and attractiveness. However, with time and support from her community, including Stori Nagel, the founder of Haus of Volta, she learned to embrace her scars as symbols of her strength and resilience.

She discovered her beauty ran far deeper than her skin, sparking her journey towards self-love and acceptance.

BEAUTY BEYOND SCARS Haus of Volta, a non-profit organization, offers complimentary photoshoots to women diagnosed with breast cancer. It was through this initiative that Dulce met Stori, a state leader with the Young Survival Coalition (YSC), and found a powerful opportunity to reimagine herself.

Participating in Haus of Volta’s photoshoots was transformative for Dulce. It gave her a platform to express her creativity, reclaim her sensuality, and most importantly, see herself beyond her scars. Reflecting on her photos, she saw a woman who was beautiful inside and out.

Stori believes that women, especially those who are married or have children, often put others’ needs before their own and need to be reminded of their beauty. At Haus of Volta, women learn they’re more than just their diagnosis—they’re unique, special, and undeniably beautiful.

BECOMING A BEACON OF HOPE For Dulce, breast cancer isn’t just about surviving; it’s about thriving and inspiring others. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, she noticed a lack of resources and support for individuals like her battling breast cancer. This spurred her to create a safe space as a Young Survival Coalition support group leader, where unique frustrations and challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community could be openly shared and understood.

Dulce encourages those wrestling with their identity in the breast cancer community to see beyond their scars. She urges them to be bold, fearless, and do what brings them joy. She underscores the importance of self-advocacy, particularly during decisions surrounding mastectomy and reconstruction.

Dulce’s journey is a testament to resilience, self-love, and the power of community. Through her story, she inspires others to recognize their own beauty and strength, and to face any challenge with the heart of a warrior.

Fear Not:

Safeguarding the Choice of Motherhood with The Chick Mission

In 2019, Roshni Kamta was a young, vibrant 22-year-old who had recently graduated from college. She moved to New York City to embark on her career and establish her independence. Nights were a blast with laughter, adventures, and embracing everything the city offered. But, sometimes, life can throw a curveball even when you are young and Roshni full of life.

It started with a lump in her left breast, a symptom she didn’t think much of, figuring many young women just have lumpy breasts. She reasoned that the pain on her left side was a result of her workout routine. And the large bruise on her left arm? Just a regular bruise.

But things escalated after she got stuck in a subway door. She started noticing blood and yellowish discharge on her sheets and nightshirts.

She thought the blood was due to her period. But when she noticed the discharge in her bra, she thought, “I need to get this checked out.”

Her appointment with her first doctor left Roshni feeling unheard and dismissed. The doctor didn‘t think she needed more testing despite her worrisome symptoms. Even after receiving a sonogram and a recommendation for a needle biopsy, the doctor seemed unconcerned when the first available biopsy appointment was almost a month away. Roshni wondered if she was overreacting to her symptoms. She questioned if she should trust her doctor and ignore her own voice.

Thankfully, Roshni stood her ground, and she secured an earlier appointment for a biopsy. Trusting herself was the right way to go. The biopsy confirmed she had stage 2 triple-negative breast cancer.

Adolescents and young adults, people diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 39, can lose their sense of invincibility when diagnosed with cancer.

Roshni was no exception.

The cancer diagnosis shook Roshni‘s world in ways she never imagined. She struggled to understand why and thought, “I am so young. How could this possibly happen to me?“ She didn‘t have a family history of breast cancer and no known genetic mutation. It took her a while to accept that a “why” wouldn‘t change the diagnosis or the impact of the diagnosis on her future.

At her first appointment with her cancer surgeon, she learned that the treatment could affect her fertility. At this early stage of adulthood, she hadn’t even thought about whether she wanted to have children. To make matters more complicated, not only did Roshni have to think about her fertility, she was presented with an option that cost thousands of dollars. One IVF single can cost up to $20,000 out of pocket.

Roshni was fortunate that her surgeon was proactive in discussing how her treatment could impact her fertility. According to experts, fertility preservation consultations and procedures are low even in women who expressed a desire to have children or more children before diagnosis. In a study designed to identify barriers to fertility preservation, 93% of the patients who desired future children at the time of diagnosis received chemotherapy; however, only 34% of these patients had a consultation with a fertility preservation specialist.

The most common reasons for declining fertility consultation were cost, concerns about delaying treatment or fears of cancer recurring in the future.

Besides providing Roshni with fertility preservation advice, her surgeon‘s office recognized the financial burden. And they were able to provide a glimmer of hope: The Chick Mission.

The Chick Mission is a non-profit organization working to ensure every young woman newly diagnosed with cancer has the option to preserve fertility through direct financial support, educational programs, and advocacy efforts.

Roshni was skeptical about applying, having not received much financial help before. She thought, “No one’s going to help me, so why am I gonna ask?” Once again, Roshni believed she would have to figure things out alone.

The staff member thought otherwise. She told Roshni, “Give me your information, and I will do it for you. You don’t have to do anything.” By her own admission, Roshni wouldn’t have applied since she believed that she wasn’t going to receive any help.

After that, it was a blur for Roshni with the egg retrieval procedure, cancer surgery, and starting chemo. A few weeks post-surgery, she inquired about paying for the egg retrieval procedure. Roshni couldn’t believe what she heard: The Chick Mission had paid the entire cost!

An appreciative Roshni messaged The Chick Mission on Instagram (@chickmission). Through her diagnosis and surgery, Roshni felt unseen and unsupported by the medical community, but this organization saw her and provided the help she needed.

According to Roshni, “They actively want to help people…and want to change the way we handle people with cancer.” She was grateful The Chick Mission saw her “as a whole person and not just a young person who went through cancer.”

Roshni is a vocal advocate for The Chick Mission because “They realize there is a hole in the health care system in helping cancer patients. Doctors want us to get our eggs frozen before [surgery] but [don’t acknowledge] the financial barrier because of insurance [not covering the cost].”

Besides providing need-based grants to cover the cost of fertility preservation procedures, The Chick Mission’s goal is 1) to raise awareness about fertility preservation and 2) to advocate for those who live in states that do not have legislation mandating insurance companies cover fertility preservation. Currently, only 16 states have legislation that ensures the cost of fertility preservation is covered for cancer patients.

Four years post-diagnosis, Roshni is looking forward to a bright future. She’s embracing her healing journey on her own terms, accepting more help, and appreciating the life she and her fiance (and adorable pup) have built together.

Embracing a ‘to and through’ philosophy, TOUCH delivers a comprehensive range of programs and services tailored to Black women at every step of their breast cancer journey. Hayley explained, “We stand by women through the journey – from maintaining breast health to diagnosis, and on into survivorship.” However, what truly sets TOUCH apart lies in their groundbreaking approach to collaboration and community engagement.

Gone are the days of long lectures at health events.

“WE DON’T KNOW WHAT WE DON’T KNOW.”

A profound lack of knowledge and understanding is the most pressing challenge facing Black women regarding breast cancer according to Ricki and Hayley. They argue that Black women simply

do not know what they’re up against when it comes to breast cancer. When diagnosed, Black women are confronted with a terrifying amount of unfamiliar terms and treatment paths. Yet, they are forced to make life-altering decisions almost instantly, often without the necessary information or guidance. Often, Black women are not given the full picture, leading to decisions that could be potentially fatal.

Time, they stressed, is precious, and too often Black women are losing out. Delays in diagnosis and treatment, fear and confusion, all contribute to the loss of precious time with family and loved ones.

TOUCH seeks to address these pressing issues by educating women with the right information before they even step into the dark. By creating accessible, culturally sensitive resources and fostering an environment of trust and support, they hope to arm Black women with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their health.

BREAST CANCER IS THE ONLY ENEMY TOUCH’s inspiring efforts extend beyond the services it provides, reshaping the very essence of collaboration. Ricki Fairley’s dynamic approach to confronting the status quo and her commitment to challenging every aspect of breast cancer awareness, screening, treatment, and survivorship, is truly a breath of fresh air. She firmly believes in the necessity to question everything until a significant reduction in death rates is observed. As Ricki and Hayley emphasize, the journey to better treatment and survival for Black women is not a solitary path.

They urge everyone to think differently, challenge preconceived notions, and continuously strive for better solutions.

In the end, Ricki measures the success of TOUCH by life – people are not only alive, they’re living their best lives. At TOUCH, they see the relationships they build and their collaborative efforts as pivotal in the fight against Black Breast Cancer, making the journey easier for everyone involved.

Supporting Children After A Parent’s Cancer Diagnosis

It was as if the earth had given way beneath me, leaving me surrounded by a sense of apprehension and ambiguity. Having been diagnosed with stage 3 inflammatory breast cancer just a few days prior, my primary concern was the impact this news would have on my children’s mental health. My husband and I agreed that it was crucial to be candid with our children, informing them of the truth regardless of their ages, and guiding them through the complexities of cancer.

HAVING THE CANCER CONVERSATION WITH KIDS

We held a family meeting in the living room and shared what was happening to me. Our children were young – only 11, 7, and 3 years old. We were conveying a topic that even some adults had difficulty comprehending. Our youngest son was unaware of what was occurring, but our two older daughters were saddened by the news, yet hopeful that everything would eventually be alright.

Not too long after, I perused a bulletin that I picked up from my oncology office and discovered a nearby cancer center named Life With Cancer, which offered a remarkable program tailored specifically for children whose parents had been diagnosed with cancer. The program provided a secure haven where children could learn about cancer, express their emotions, and connect with others facing similar challenges.

BUILDING RESILIENCE IN CHILDREN

We enrolled our girls in the six-week program, and the impact of this support on my children’s lives has been immeasurable. One memory that stands out is the joy and relief my middle daughter experienced during her participation in the program. She was only seven years old at the time, and Life With Cancer provided her with an outlet to explore her emotions, ask questions, and share her thoughts among a group of understanding peers. Through storytelling, coloring activities, and interactive sessions, the program nurtured a sense of empowerment and resilience within her young spirit.

One activity that had a lasting impact was when each child had the opportunity to create their own bear. As they carefully assembled each piece, it became more than just a stuffed animal. It became a symbol of their strength and growth in the face of adversity. My daughter proudly declared that she wasn’t growing like a weed, as some had suggested, but rather like a beautiful flower, reminding us all of the resilience that can flourish even amidst the toughest circumstances.

Reflecting on that challenging time, I am grateful for the immense value that the Life With Cancer program provided to my entire family. They not only provided a sense of community and understanding but also equipped children with the necessary coping mechanisms to navigate the complexities of the cancer journey. By acknowledging their fears, validating their emotions, and fostering connections with peers who share their experiences, such programs create a space for healing and growth.

IT’S POSSIBLE TO PARENT WITH CANCER

Parenting with cancer is an arduous journey, but with the right support, it becomes more manageable.

Programs like Life With Cancer play a vital role in ensuring that the emotional well-being of children in such situations is addressed with care and compassion.

As a proud 10-year survivor of inflammatory breast cancer, I now look back on the tremendous impact that Life With Cancer had on our family’s journey. The support we received helped us weather the storm and emerge stronger, both individually and as a unit. It is my hope that more families facing similar circumstances find solace in programs like these, allowing their children to thrive and grow amidst the 2023 - 2024 MORE LIFE MAGAZINE |

challenges of the cancer journey.

Beyond the immediate impact of the Life With Cancer program, the lessons and experiences my children gained have continued to shape their lives as they journey through adolescence and into young adulthood. The seeds of resilience that were planted during those early days continue to sprout, helping them face life’s challenges with strength and grace.

A LASTING IMPACT

As my children grew older, they carried with them the understanding that life is not immune to hardships. They developed a deep empathy for others facing difficult circumstances and became advocates for those in need.

They learned to approach life’s obstacles with a sense of determination, inspired by the resilience they witnessed in the faces of fellow program participants.

As we continue to nurture the seeds of resilience, my family and I carry forward the spirit of hope and empowerment that the Life With Cancer program instilled within us. We are proof that support programs have the power to transform lives, nurture strength, and foster unity. Together, we can create a world where no family faces cancer alone, where every child finds solace and support in the embrace of a loving community.

Seeing is Believing: A Personal Call For Asian Breast Cancer Visibility

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I immediately started shuffling through names in my head, trying to find someone I could talk to that had cancer.

Someone my age.

Someone like me.

Someone whose experience I trusted.

The good (and bad) news is I couldn’t think of anyone.

I had so many questions, ranging from the expected fearful ones to the lighter, superficial ones.

How bad is chemo, really?

Am I going to die?

What will I look like bald?

Will I get chemo curls?

What do radiation burns look like and are they permanent?

What is breast reconstruction?

How will I survive this?

No, seriously, does Asian hair grow back curly?

I turned to social media and searched hashtags like #breastcancer, #chemocurls, #breastcancersurvivor, but didn’t see a single Asian-looking person. So I tried #asianamericanbreastcancer, #asianchemocurls, #asianbreastcancer, and still found nothing. I cried.

Because first, it’s personal.

You look for someone like you because you want to see yourself in another survivor.

I searched for videos of cancer patients ringing the bell so I could visualize myself finishing chemo.

Survival requires believing, and seeing is believing. I did the best I could to imagine myself in the pink ribbon world of breast cancer survivors, even though it was overwhelmingly populated by white women, grandmothers in their 50s and 60s, to whom I didn’t know how to relate.

The personal stories started to accumulate: other BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) patients who hadn’t been told about the full range of treatment options, who weren’t offered the same pain meds or anti-anxiety meds as white patients, whose doctors didn’t educate them on long-term effects, and who didn’t know about supplemental treatments like physical therapy and lymphatic massage.

Then, after the personal, it becomes political.

Why can’t I find Asian American breast cancer survivors?

If they’re not easy to find in public, like in social media, are they being represented in clinical trials and research?

Asian The Census Bureau defines a person of the Asian race as “having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent including, for example, Cambodia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippine Islands, Thailand, and Vietnam.” According to the Pew Research Center, the Census definition of “Asian” — the fastest growing American population — covers more than 20 ethnicities and 20 million citizens in the United States (TIME Magazine).

Are these medications going to work for me?

Is genetic testing going to detect anything in me, or is there not enough relevant data from other patients of Asian descent?

Why are breast cancer rates in Asian Americans rising more than in any other group?

I wonder if the “model minority” myth has found its way into the healthcare arena, allowing the medical community’s implicit biases to simply ignore Asian Americans. Or maybe we are not getting screenings or accessing preventative health care due to language barriers and a lack of education.

Would a stereotype explain why many Asian cultures are less likely to share their health issues among family members, much less in public? Well, when there is insufficient research, data, and accessible public health initiatives, it’s easy to reduce us to stereotypes.

In actuality, we need our data to be disaggregated to better show the truth of each Asian American subgroup, as well as allow Pacific Islander Americans and Native Hawaiians to receive their own unique focus.

For me, I can start with representation. Showing up for my community by sharing my story and publicly advocating for health equity for Asian Americans and all BIPOC cancer survivors.

I want the next newly-diagnosed patient to not come up empty-handed when starting the worst, scariest internet search of their lives.

I want all of us to be able to find someone whose very existence proves that survival is possible.

And yes, my Asian hair did grow back with thick, wild chemo curls! It lasted for about a year and then my hair started growing straight again, similar to, but not exactly as before. Not that all Asian hair is the same, of course (our diversity is infinite), but maybe this is the reminder I needed to start that hashtag.

Model Minority According to an article published by Petrie-Flom Center at Harvard Law School, the model minority myth is that Asians in the U.S. are successful and free from racial bias. Not only does this bias usually exempt Asian people from benefiting from health equity interventions, assuming all Asian people are of a higher economic status, it distorts the diversity of the needs, experiences, and cultures by grouping them under the single label.

Health equity, the state in which everyone has a fair and just opportunity to attain their highest level of health, is still far out of reach for minority communities. But with increased awareness, numerous opportunities arise to improve access and break barriers for those who are farthest from reaching the goal.

By making efforts to ensure health services align with people’s cultural backgrounds, we can help communities achieve health equity. This means better health outcomes for all. Let’s dive deeper into the concept of cultural relevance and examine how transformative organizations like Bag It are working differently to better support Spanish-speaking populations.

WHAT IS CULTURAL RELEVANCE IN HEALTHCARE?

Cultural relevance in healthcare is all about tailoring healthcare to respect and accommodate patients’ cultural backgrounds, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. It’s a holistic approach that recognizes how culture affects how people view health, illness, and healthcare. By understanding and respecting different cultural perspectives, service providers can communicate better with their patients, build trust, and improve patient compliance and satisfaction.

The role of cultural relevance in achieving health equity is huge. It helps bridge the gap between healthcare systems and diverse patient populations, making sure that culturally diverse individuals receive appropriate and respectful care.

By understanding and responding to different cultural perspectives, we can reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes for everyone. It’s all about creating a more inclusive and fair healthcare environment.

KEY ELEMENTS OF ACHIEVING CULTURAL RELEVANCE

Achieving cultural relevance in healthcare involves several important elements: • Cultural Competence: It requires cultural competence among service providers, which involves understanding, acknowledging, and respecting cultural differences.

This includes knowledge about different cultural beliefs, values, and practices related to health and well-being.

Community Engagement: It includes community engagement, which involves working closely with local communities to understand their health needs and culture, and to co-create solutions that are culturally relevant and effective.

Continuous Learning and Improvement: Cultural competence is not a onetime achievement, but an ongoing process of learning, reflecting and adapting. By incorporating these elements, healthcare providers can move towards providing culturally relevant care that promotes health equity and improves health outcomes.

HOW BAG IT REVAMPED RESOURCES FOR SPANISH-SPEAKING COMMUNITIES

Bag It was created by Sherri Romanoski, a breast cancer survivor, to help individuals with cancer regain control of their lives and access resources for coping with the disease.

Each convenient bag is filled with helpful items and information to provide support and assistance for life after a cancer diagnosis.

Now, the Bag It team is making their services even better by focusing on making their resources more accessible to Spanish-speaking communities. By redesigning its resources in collaboration with the communities it aims to serve, Bag It is incorporating the principle of cultural competence into its services.

The bi-cultural bag is dual language and has 4 full-size printed booklets, a 3-ring binder and a journal-size appointment companion for people to take with them to their medical visits.

To create this bag, Bag It took deliberate steps to not just translate existing resources but to rethink the content of the resources altogether.

To create accessible and relevant resources, Bag It did a deep dive into the Latin/Hispanic culture and community. The new resources are translated using Universal Spanish. Content was added and adjusted to be tailored to the values, beliefs, and attitudes of people in Latino and Hispanic communities. They also included short stories to highlight the importance of selfadvocacy, understanding one’s diagnosis, navigating family relationships, faith and spirituality and more. They even added a dozen recipes for popular Latin dishes with a healthy twist.
