A Message From The President And CEO Welcome to Mi Magazine!

We are excited to present to you a magazine that provides a glimpse into Mitsubishi Motors and an understanding of the brand behind the three-diamond logo. It all starts with people: our customers, our dealers and our team. I’ve worked for Mitsubishi Motors all over the world for the past 25 years, and I can tell you that at Mitsubishi Motors this business is a people business first. From the moment you walk into our dealerships, to your return for your first service appointment or 100th, our teams across the country are here to serve you, to keep you safe and comfortable. From the Seiji Watanabe, Mitsubishi Motor Corp.’s Chief Designer, to Paul Simmonds, one of the first employees here in Canada and the man behind our famous 10-year warranty, we are excited to share our brand and the people behind the brand, and the customers who are delighted by their brand new Mitsubishi. This year, we are celebrating 20 years in Canada and with an entirely refreshed lineup we are ready to take on the next 20. There is so much to be proud of: we are a team of 100 strong at Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada, Inc. and 1,000 more at our 94 dealerships from Vancouver Island to PEI and Newfoundland. And in these 20 years, we have sold 330,000+ vehicles to Canadians like you, some of whom were the first in the country to buy a plug-in hybrid SUV. We could not have reached this special milestone without the loyalty and support of our valued customers and our dealer partners. In these pages and in our next special edition 20th anniversary we hope to tell you a story that makes you even prouder to be part of our family. From our team to you, thank you! Sincerely,

Celebrate Canada 2022 Spring And Summer Events

As pandemic-related restrictions lift nation-wide and spring gives way to summer, people will be out in full across the provinces soaking up all the fun warm weather activities Canada has to offer. And there are many spanning coast to coast: below we highlight a few events both old and new no resident or tourist should miss out on this season.

British Columbia Abbotsford International Airshow August 5 to 7 The Abbotsford International Airshow is celebrating its 60th anniversary and hasn’t missed a step yet. The three-day spectacle, happening at the regional airport approximately an hour’s drive outside of Vancouver, is often ranked among the top 10 air shows in the world and features not only aerial acrobatics, but a kid’s area, displays and fireworks. 10

Veterans of the Airshow, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds are a particularly popular draw, flying their Canadair CT-114 Tutor jets solo and in formation up to nine while leaving signature white smoke trails in the sky. Other performers vary yearto-year: for example, in 2021 some high-powered military aircraft such as a USAF F-22 Raptor and RCAF CF-18 Hornet made special appearances.

Alberta

Yukon

Calgary Stampede July 8 to 17

Yukon River Quest June 22 to 25

July has become synonymous with the Calgary Stampede in southern Alberta, an annual weekand-a-half-long rodeo, exhibition and festival that calls itself “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.” Holding the first one way back in 1912, more than 100,000 people visit the grounds each day to be a part of the excitement going on well into the later hours.

Participants the world round annually descend upon the territory for the Yukon River Quest, touted as the “toughest and most alluring marathon paddling race,” which is a 715 kilometre aquatic journey beginning in Whitehorse and ending in Dawson City. Solo and tandem canoes and kayaks, standup paddle boards, and bigger canoes are all invited, and a Half Quest is offered too.

Besides all the live entertainment, the Stampede has developed quite the reputation of serving an eclectic assortment of concession items from Louisiana gator bites to rainbow grilled cheese sandwiches. And don’t worry about opening up the wallet in the a.m. — Several businesses around the city continue the time-honoured tradition of serving up free pancake breakfasts.

The Yukon River passes through Five First Nations on the route — Kwanlin Dun, Ta’an Kwachan Council, Little Salmon/Carmacks, Selkirk, and Trondek Hwechin — and the race honours their culture and those who have lived off the water and nurtured it for centuries. Not ready to take the plunge just yet? Help cheer on the teams at the start or finish line.

Queen City Ex August 3 to 7

Winnipeg Folk Festival July 7 to 10

Taking place in Regina’s REAL District, the largest interconnected event complex in Canada, Queen City Ex(hibition) kicks off on Aug. 3. Formerly going by Buffalo Days, and a lot of different names since the fair has been coming to town since 1894, visitors can look forward to food, music, rides, a petting zoo and shopping.

Following a two-summer hiatus due to the pandemic, the 47th edition of the Winnipeg Folk Festival is back at Birds Hill Provincial Park in July. Whether driving, bussing, cycling or walking in, or camping on-site, all guests are treated to an extensive lineup of acts that in past years have included Death Cab for Cutie, Sheryl Crow, Feist, and many others.

Legendary Rapper, actor, filmmaker and allaround cultural icon Ice Cube will be headlining the coming Ex. Additionally, homegrown blues rock outfit Wide Mouth Mason and six-time Juno Award winners the Sam Roberts Band is set to hit the stage as well.

12

Families attending can also take advantage of kids’ programming like watching performances under the Chickadee Big Top, catching the Castlemoon Theatre puppet show in the Reading Tent or trying hoop dancing out in the field.

Ontario

Quebec

ROM x new Acropolis Museum March 12 to September 30

Montreal Cirque Festival July 7 to 17

Escape the heat and wander through the Royal Ontario Museum’s latest exhibit observing eight decades of Canada-Greece relations. Engaging in an exchange of objects with the Athens-based institution, the centrepiece on display is the best preserved and most stunning of the Korai group of ancient female sculptures discovered at the Acropolis of Athens.

Quebec has become the home of modern day circus, having exported the world-renowned Cirque du Soleil. Naturally, then, the uber-popular company is participating in the Montreal Cirque Festival where artists from around the province dazzle audiences with high-flying acrobatics at the TOHU theatre and the Quartier des spectacles downtown.

Created between 520-510 GCE, Kore (the name meaning freestanding maiden statue) 670 is considered one of the most important artifacts of its kind due to the fine level of detail and preserved colour. Reciprocally, ROM has loaned two Panathenaic amphorae (vases) to the Greek museum for a six-month residency.

In addition, there is plenty of free entertainment scheduled at various outdoor venues, parks and right on the street and sidewalks across the city. Expect jugglers, zip liners, acrobats, tightrope walkers and more.

Newfoundland and Labrador

New Brunswick

Iceberg Festival June 3 to 12

Greater Moncton Highland Games & Scottish Festival June 17 to 19

Few spring activities are as visually impressive as observing icebergs, which have broken off 10,000-year-old glaciers near Greenland and the Artic, float along Newfoundland and Labrador’s aptly named Iceberg Alley signalling the arrival of the season in the north.

Celebrate Scottish and Celtic culture at the Greater Moncton Highland Games & Scottish Festival showcasing “feats of strength and feasts of lobster.” Receive an introduction to the Gaelic language at one of the dozens of workshops, or watch the demonstrations featuring highland dance, pipe, drum, falconry and sheep dog herding.

Accompanying the viewing of these majestic products of Mother Nature are a series of fun events held by the communities of St. Anthony, Conche, L’Anse aux Meadows, Raleigh, Roddickton and Bird Cove where attendees get to connect with local craftspeople, storytellers, chefs and musicians against the backdrop of amazing landscapes and seascapes.

14

Located at the Hal Betts Sportsplex on the beautiful waterfront in downtown Moncton, the 2022 Masters World Championships will be hosted simultaneously where men and women are set to compete in numerous categories including stone and heavy hammer throw and caber toss.

Prince Edward Island

Nova Scotia

Island Tides Yoga & Wellness Festival June 16 to 19

Digby Scallop Days August 4 to 7

The last couple of years in particular have really shone a spotlight on the importance of personal health. As a result, the Island Tides Yoga & Wellness Festival was born. A collaborative effort between the Discover Charlottetown travel association and local partners, beginners and seasoned yogis alike are welcome to join on classes led by some of the best teachers in Canada.

Head to the scallop capital of the world for Digby Scallop Days, a four-day celebration of Nova Scotia’s scallop fishing industry and the people who brave the seas to harvest them. Virtually all the eateries in the area serve the specialty shellfish during this weekend seared, fried, barbecued and in delicious chowder form.

Alternatively, learn about clean beauty and self love from thought-leaders in an informal setting, partake in a stand-up paddleboard session or experience guided meditation to quiet the mind. After working up an appetite, visit the food vendors offering up fresh and nourishing fare the Maritimes is known for.

Then, walk off the meal and check out the boat gear and shucking demonstrations right off the dock, car show & shine and even a woodsmen competition. Make sure to bring a lawn chair as there are live concerts and a fireworks show as well.

2022 Mitsubishi Outlander GT Premium

New Halo Vehicle Best Equipped Mitsubishi Ever Built

For its fourth generation, Mitsubishi Motors designers gave the 2022 Outlander a bit of a radical redesign. No longer can it be considered on the tame side, this is an in-your-face concept that is hard to miss.

16

But this is more than just some new sheet metal and chrome. In fact, the Outlander was rethought from the ground up, with the three-row SUV sitting on a new platform and featuring a new engine. The Outlander is available in seven trims, starting with the ES and topping out with the GT Premium. All trims come with an enhanced version of Mitsubishi’s S-AWC integrated vehicle dynamics control system. And the gasoline-only version of the Outlander will soon be joined in Canada by the fully-redesigned Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) version, which is expected to go on sale in the second half of 2022. Powertrain: Under the hood, Mitsubishi introduces a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine for the Outlander. Rated at 181 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque it delivers a strong everyday driving experience

and overall excellent performance with smooth acceleration and quick response to throttle inputs. The Outlander also comes with Mitsubishi’s renowned electronically controlled AWD system (S-AWC). Exterior: When you walk up to the 2022 Outlander, you are immediately struck by the front fascia, which highlights a very tall setup overall. The focal point is the wide and deep centre grille, which is flanked by thin slits for daytime running lights. Below that you will find the headlights, which are purposefully designed to standout and flanked by chrome accents for added style. The Outlander also features a sleek side profile, with crisp accent lines front to back that provide a sense of movement even when standing still. The topline GT comes with a very attractive set of 20-inch two-tone alloy wheels.

17

Interior: The cabin of the GT Premium stands out in particular thanks to its two-tone semi-aniline leather seating, which is very stylish and extremely comfortable. That Saddle tan accent colour scheme carries through to the dash and door trims, giving the Outlander a definite upscale vibe. The cabin’s design is clean, with controls neatly packaged in an easy to operate style around the centre stack. The centre console is equally well thought out, featuring an electronic shifter, drive mode selector and parking brake button. The GT is also equipped with a 12.3-inch digital display for the gauge cluster, an elegant and clear interface that gives the driver all the information they need. It also comes with a head-up display for an extra layer of convenience and safety.

18

The second row of the Outlander deliver occupants a generous amount of legroom and comfort, with heated rear seat, while the third row remains a practical space to be used for passengers or extra storage. When not in use and folded flat, the Outlander has a cavernous cargo compartment for your family travels. Safety: Outlander was built with families in mind and taking care of precious cargo. From advanced semi-autonomous driving such as Mi-Pilot Assist to 11 air bags, and almost everything in between including automatic rear emergency brake from base, the vehicle incorporates over 50 new safety and technology features. For the first time, Mitsubishi Connect is available in Canada which links you to an emergency call centre 24/7 as well as many remote functions from the convenience of your cellphone.

Infotainment: The GT Premium comes with a large 9-inch central display screen for the infotainment system, which offers navigation and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android AutoTM, wirelessly. You can also make sure you don’t run out of juice with wireless charging of mobile devices. There’s a mix of on-screen commands and physical buttons to scroll through the various menus and functions of the system which are user friendly. Audio sound quality is excellent thanks to the 10-speaker Bose premium audio system included in the GT trim. Drive: The Outlander delivers a solid drive experience, whether you are in the city or traveling on the highway. The S-AWC system also means that it can handle a variety of different terrains and road conditions.

Ride quality and steering feel of the Outlander is comfortable for longer trips, and the suspension setup does a good job of quelling any impact from bumpy roads. Through the drive mode selector in the centre console, you can choose from six different modes to reflect the driving conditions of the day. These include Normal, Tarmac for sportier performance, Gravel, Snow, Mud and Eco to maximize fuel economy. Conclusion: The all-new 2022 Outlander offers a fresh take on SUV design that is certain to turn heads and start a conversation. The interior is equally well executed, delivering a stylish and quiet cabin that is certain to be a popular with drivers and families alike.

Angel and Dexter are a couple from Toronto who know each other so well they finish each other’s sentences. It follows, then, that when it came to choosing a new family vehicle, they wanted to be totally in sync.

the car into scenarios that resonate with people,” he says. “Can they see themselves in the vehicle— carrying a kayak or towing a boat? Yes, this new Outlander can meet all your needs. That’s the message.”

Angel and Dexter both work in wealth management. Prioritizing value was central to their decisionmaking. The 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander sport utility vehicle was the perfect fit. “We knew that the pricing made it the best choice,” says Dexter. “You’re getting everything, including the great safety features.”

And it looks the part.

They also found themselves making the decision not just with their logical left brains, but also with the creative right sides. Angel recalls being won over by design: “When I first saw the new Outlander on YouTube, I immediately said, ‘I want a test drive.’ When we drove the demo, the materials were soft, the leather high-quality. I said, ‘We have to have it.’” That was that. Their three-row SUV is ideal for a family looking for space without the bulk of a hulking SUV. They’re also getting noticed. “The first time we took it out,” says Angel, “the other drivers were giving way just to get a good look.” Angel and Dexter’s story is one that Steve Carter hears all the time. Carter is Mitsubishi Canada’s marketing director. It’s his job to get the word out about the new Outlander. “That’s about putting

The array of updates to the fourth-generation, allnew 2022 Outlander includes an award-winning design with sculpted sides, strong shoulders at the rear, a distinctive face and 20-inch wheels. There’s an elegant cabin, along with cavernous cargo space, hands-free liftgate, seven-passenger seating and a panoramic roof. The Outlander also has a high stance, for ease of entry and visibility. The ride is super quiet and the technology includes a 12-inch driver display, excellent 10-speaker Bose audio, wireless charger and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™. Under the hood, there’s a strong 2.5-litre, fourcylinder engine. There’s good fuel economy and six all-wheel drive modes. Safety is an emphasis; the Outlander has 11 airbags and all sorts of driver-assistance features. The safety piece is what initially appealed to Rose, a relatively new driver in Metro Toronto. The Outlander is her very first car, one she uses for her commute every day and for shuttling duties for her daughter.

21

“The very first thing that caught my eye was the 360-degree-view,” says Rose, referring to the Outlander multi-view camera system, which employs cameras to assist drivers in parking manoeuvres. “As a new driver, I valued the safety features. I did several test drives of other cars, but none of them has as many features as the Outlander. It also has seven seats, which is an added bonus for us.” Rose also found herself pleasantly surprised by the ride quality and responsiveness of the familysized Outlander. “It’s very nice to drive,” she says. “The interior is luxurious and comforting. I couldn’t find another vehicle with so many features in this price range.”

22

Daisy, a human resources professional, also did her homework, testing 15 different competitive models with her husband. “We test drove so many cars, went to so many different dealers,” she says, laughing. “I was exhausted. But it was an important purchase—our first new car in 10 years.” The Outlander’s new design was appealing, sure, but the many features at an affordable price sealed the deal. “I love the driver information—especially the head-up display,” she says before ticking off a long list of other features: moonroof, blindspot assistance, lane departure warning, parking cameras and more. Add to that the 10-year warranty, bumper to bumper. “It has a lot at a price that starts at just under $32,000. It’s competitive to any luxury car that costs you $20,000 more,” says Daisy. “And the warranty—If you are giving me 10 years of warranty, that means the car will last. Who gives 10 years? Most give three or five. That’s a lot of support.”

Amping Up the All-New Outlander With Accessories

There are so many options available to make the all-new 2022 Outlander your own. Take a look at some of the accessories available.

25

Gear And Accessories Now that warm weather is chasing away any remnants of winter, many will be shifting their attention to the sunny drives ahead. But don’t hit the road just quite yet — first ensure you’re packing the right gear for the upcoming four-wheeled journey. Mi has put together a shortlist of items to bring along so you can live your best summer life.

Jooki 2 Keep the little ones entertained on vacation without them having to stare at another screen: meet the first child-oriented and Spotify-friendly wireless W-Fi speaker. Rather than poking at icons to select a playlist, the Jooki 2 boasts NFC connectivity so touching the complimentary tokens or optional figurines to the unit will trigger custom pre-loaded music or audiobooks. The unique operation channels Montessori education principles helping promote creativity and independence. MP3 songs may also be directly transferred to the (MicroSD expandable) internal storage using USB-C to listen offline. When it’s quiet time, pair a set of Bluetooth headphones for personal listening. The onboard battery lasts a maximum of eight hours per charge.

LEGO Ideas Seinfeld Is there any better way to spend a lazy weekend afternoon inside than assembling a shrunken down living room set of the iconic show? Conceived by an Australian 3-D artist and super fan, the whole gang is back in Minifigure form, from Elaine to Newman, donning 90s appropriate outfits. And the fun doesn’t stop with the iconic New York apartment, as a bonus comedy stage is part of the kit too. Everything is incredibly detailed, especially given the relatively compact size of the finished model — you’ll want to put aside a few hours to build — down to the Easter egg accessories thrown in such as the marble rye and Kramer’s coffee table book. And of course, the framed Porsche poster hanging above the cabinet, a nod to Jerry’s love for automobiles both on and off the series.

26

Vivid-Pix Restore Are the phone or digital camera pictures of your holiday looking underexposed, a little blurry and/ or kind of meh overall? Vivid-Pix Restore software comes to the rescue, utilizing patented artificial intelligence to bring the best out of every shot with one click. Improving all formats like JPEG, TIFF, PNG, DNG, BMP and RAW, the original files are untouched and a smaller version is automatically generated perfect for sharing on social media or email. Restore lets users fine-tune and customize their images themselves as well by manipulating simple on-screen controls and sliders to crop or adjust contrast, saturation, etc. It even works on scans of old film prints, slides and newspaper clippings. Both Apple and PC compatible, a free trial of the program is available to try before buying.

Comica Audio BoomX-D PRO Whether you’re an aspiring vlogger or just interested in creating high quality videos of your adventures, a proper microphone is a must. This wireless offering from Comica Audio fits the bill nicely, comprised of a two-channel receiver and a pair of mini transmitters. Connect the former to a smartphone, camera or laptop via the USB or 3.5-millimetre cable, and then clip the latter directly onto clothing to capture crystal clear mono or stereo audio. Or take advantage of the bundled lavalier mics for a more discreet appearance. The transmitters also pack 8GB of internal memory serving as a backup. Dedicated gain buttons on the receiver allow quick changing of the signal levels on the fly, and built-in rechargeable batteries eliminate the hassle of lugging around disposable ones. 27

Gear And Accessories INNOCN 15K1F For those that can’t part with their video games for any duration, or multi-taskers who need to work while they play, the INNOCN 15.6-inch OLED portable monitor might be the ideal solution. Featuring high definition 1080p resolution, a seven-millimetre-thick profile and weighing less than a pineapple, the travel-friendly 15K1F may function as a second laptop screen or gaming station thanks to both USB Type-C (two) and mini HDMI inputs, embedded stereo speakers and an ultra-fast 1ms response time. OLED hardware and DCI-P3 colour gamut support means the screen produces deep blacks and rich colours, and low blue light technology reduces eyestrain during extended periods of use. The slim aluminum frame is sleek, housing subtle power, volume and menu buttons on the top and right side, and the handy cover doubles as a stand once folded up.

Mitsubishi All-weather Floor Mats These genuine branded all weather floor mats are made to fit perfectly in all products across the Mitsubishi lineup, such as the refreshed Eclipse Cross. Coming in a set of four, the high bordering edges and inner grooves protect the carpeting against rain, snow and mud potentially sloshing around (or even messy passengers). An anti-slip design prevents unintentional movement when driving. Crafted out of heavy-duty stain-resistant rubber, they are easy to clean using soap, water and a brush, or spray the mats down safely using a pressure washer. Visit your local Mitsubishi dealership for model-specific pricing.

28

Mitsubishi Roof Carrier Kit Perhaps you wish to bring a full-size kayak up to the lake in your RVR, or you simply want to keep all three rows upright in the new fourth generation Mitsubishi Outlander while still being able to carry some gear. Depending on the application, the easily installed roof carrier kit adds everything needed to secure a storage carrier to the top of the SUV like lockable side rails and crossbars and is backed by a factory warranty. Once attached, there are many alternative accessories owners can choose to install besides a box, including different mounts to hold recreational equipment from snowboards to bicycles.

The One and Only All-New Outlander PHEV

31

The world has changed considerably over the last twenty years. In 2002, social media had yet to entrench itself into our lives, television was starting to embrace its highly defined future and the legend of Trent Evans and the “Lucky Loonie” was just beginning to implant itself into the Canadian psyche. At this same time, Mitsubishi Motors was turning its attention to the adventure seeking motorists with the introduction of the Outlander crossover Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). The Outlander was Mitsubishi Motors’ very first vehicle in that growing segment. Based on the ASX (Active Sports Crossover) concept vehicle, that first Outlander brought the higher ground clearance and all-wheel-drive capabilities that the Montero (Pajero) had earned fame for, to a smaller, more efficient vehicle with car-like handling. And through the course of the next two decades Outlander would evolve over three generations, while cementing itself as a core model in the company’s lineup. More importantly, Outlander would also become one of Mitsubishi’s most advanced vehicles, too. 32

When it debuted in Japan in 2013, the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) became the first ever PHEV SUV the world had seen. Employing a small and fuel-efficient gasoline engine with two 60kW electric motors, the Outlander PHEV had the potential to travel in relative silence, using only its lithium-ion battery to power the electric motors, while maintaining its all-wheel-drive capability. With its combination of interior comforts, SUV practicality, rugged capabilities and an environmentally conscious powertrain, the Outlander PHEV quickly found favour with families committed to taking nothing but memories and leaving nothing but footprints on their adventures. Outlander PHEV was even a finalist for World Green Car of the Year in 2014. In 2018, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was introduced to Canadian consumers for the very first time. It was the first affordable PHEV SUV in Canada and the only vehicle of its kind to offer both 100% electric All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) and fast charging capability. Canadians were quick to realise the

advantages this offered, and the Outlander PHEV began breaking records, becoming the first PHEV of any kind to sell five-thousand units in a calendar year. Since then the Outlander PHEV has continually earned its place as the best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV in Canada. Not content to rest on those laurels, Mitsubishi Motors recently introduced the next generation of Outlander PHEV in Japan. Boasting both increased power and range, the 2023 Outlander PHEV also moves the needle ever further for passenger comfort and safety. The drive unit controlling the front electric motor also now employs a boost function that will actively monitor and raise the voltage supply to the front motor while optimising the efficiency of the

generator. Coupled with its larger capacity fuel tank, this means the all-new Outlander PHEV can take you and your family even farther between recharges and fuel fill-ups. Increases to power and range, while always appreciated, will always come second to ensuring that all your adventures, both near and far, are safe. As such, the Outlander PHEV is equipped with the most advanced version of our world renowned Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive system. The S-AWC employed in Outlander PHEV maximizes the traction capabilities of the twin-motor layout by adding braking-integrated Active Yaw Control (AYC) function for the rear wheels. This system finds optimal traction by actively monitoring conditions

33

and re-distributing power to the wheels with the most grip. Torque vectoring is applied on all four corners via the braking system to maximize the handling characteristics of Outlander PHEV delivering increased stability while also enhancing the fun-to-drive aspect behind the wheel during spirited drives. Drivers can also tailor their driving experience with Outlander PHEV, thanks to the integration of seven different selectable drive modes. Normal is the basic mode which has been optimized for normal daily driving conditions. Tarmac mode spotlights Outlander PHEV’s sportiest behaviours, 34

with a more responsive throttle and enhanced handling performance on dry paved surfaces. If your adventures take you off the beaten path, Gravel mode will provide a balanced approach to unpaved roads, and Snow mode maximizes traction response while navigating Canada’s wintery conditions. Taking things one step further, Mud mode optimizes tires slippage for superior handling and response on muddy roads and in deep snow. In addition to these modes, drivers can also select between Power mode, which delivers powerful acceleration when needed, and Eco mode which prioritizes efficiency for economically friendly driving.

The all-new Outlander is also equipped with our latest iteration of the MI-PILOT driver assistance system. This new evolution integrates Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) to actively monitor and adjust distances between vehicles while helping to keep your Outlander PHEV where it belongs in the centre of the lane. In addition to that, the MI-PILOT can also detect the posted speed limit for the road you are enjoying and automatically adjust travel speed accordingly. Taking this technology even further, MI-PILOT with Navi-link integrates map data to automatically adjust vehicle speed as needed according to the winding road ahead.

Based on the “Mitsubishi Touch” approach, every surface of Outlander PHEV has been scrutinized to ensure comfort while also exuding a luxurious aesthetic. Everything from the heated, diamondstitched, leather seats to the touchpoints for HVAC and infotainment control have been chosen for their high-quality finishes and tactile feel.

The experience of both driving and being a passenger in Outlander PHEV has been further enhanced with Mitsubishi Motors’ most luxurious interior to date.

The next-generation Outlander PHEV will be available in Canadian Mitsubishi dealerships in the second half of 2022.

The world has changed a lot in the last twenty years. With our increased focus on battery electric vehicle technology, as best exemplified currently by the 2022 Outlander PHEV, the changes Mitsubishi Motors makes now are with the next twenty years in mind - and beyond.

New Roads

Bucket List Drives What makes a great driving road? For some it’s the scenery on the horizon, for others it’s the greatest number of twists and turns along the segment of pavement. Or why not both? The Great White North certainly has no shortage of such examples —we’ve highlighted a handful of cross-country favourites below, as well as a few international routes thrown in that should be on the top of any auto and travel enthusiasts’ bucket list. Prince Edward Island • North Cape Coastal Drive Arguably one of the best ways to see P.E.I. is navigating the winding 350-kilometre North Cape Coastal Drive. A good departure point is Summerside, the second largest city in the province about an hour outside of the capital Charlottetown, from there heading towards Malpeque Bay and up the western part of the island to North Cape and then back down and around. 36

Several points of interest exist in the area, among them the Canadian Potato Museum showcasing the largest potato sculpture in the world; the house/tavern/chapel made of out of 25,000 recycled bottles in Cap-Egmont; and the West Point Lighthouse housing a museum and a fourstar 13-room inn that makes a perfect place to break halfway.

Nova Scotia • Cabot Trail A well-known destination for petrolheads, Cabot Trail is coined as “one of Canada’s ultimate scenic highways” representing a 298-kilometre tour through Cape Breton Highland National Park and the Atlantic Coast. Try starting at Baddeck and end Chéticamp going counter clockwise.

While doable in a day we recommend taking at least two or three to fit in spots like the Uisge Bàn, where a cascading waterfall awaits hikers; the Parks Canada Lantern Walk guided by a representative who tells tales (and ghost stories) of early settlers; and the grave of the Unknown Sailor at White Point paying tribute to fishermen lost at sea.

Alberta • Icefields Parkway The Icefields Parkway, also known as Highway 93, links Banff National Park and Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies, and over 232 kilometres motorists are treated to views of more than 100 ancient glaciers including the Athabasca Glacier, dramatic rock spires and emerald lakes set in valleys thick pine and larch forests.

Note: a valid day or annual national parks pass is required to drive the parkway and can be purchased from the government online or at select in-person locations listed on the website: www.pc.gc.ca/en/ voyage-travel/admission. Free for youth under 17 and new Canadian citizens.

37

British Columbia • Nanaimo to Tofino Even though it doesn’t have a cool name, one is not needed as the spectacular natural beauty of Vancouver Island is well encapsulated along this short-but-sweet road trip spanning 207 kilometres. Taking three to six hours depending on pace and stops, the route goes up mountains, past old growth forests and around bodies of water.

Coombs Old Country Market is worth the fiveminute detour where goats are often found munching happily on grass atop the roof, seemingly oblivious to the goings-on below. And for those interested in seeing what an 800-yearold, 75-metre tall Douglas Fir tree looks like, be sure to drop by Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Provincial Park.

Tennessee/North Carolina • Tail of the Dragon Another locale popular with the two and fourwheel crowd is the much vaunted Tail of the Dragon. Less than 18 kilometres in total length, a whopping 318 curves are crammed into the section of US 129 between Chilhowee Lake in Tennessee and Deals Gap mountain pass just across the North Carolina state line.

38

Visit Deals Gap Motorcycle Resort for a night’s stay, camping, to fill up gas or load up on snacks and memorabilia in the shop. Afterwards, check out the Cherohala Skyway approximately 58 kilometres away offering an amazing, elevated perspective of the entire region and plenty of places to park and admire the landscape.

Oregon • Historic Columbia River Highway Most car enthusiasts know about the Pacific Coast Highway and rightfully so, with its more-than 1000-kilometre long view of the ocean. But that’s not the only magnificent stretch of waterfront asphalt on the American west coast. Enter the Historic Columbia River Highway (HCRH) in Oregon, which runs from Troutdale to The Dalles. Not only is HCRH the first paved road in the Pacific Northwest, but the first designated scenic highway in the U.S. Bordering the Columbia River Gorge, the canyon boasts sheer walls of basalt accented by ferns, rare endemic plants and is home to no less than five waterfalls: Latourell, Shepperd’s Dell, Bridal Veil, Wahkeena and the 189-metre Multnomah. Japan • Mount Haruna Fans of the hit Japanese drifting anime Initial D will recognize this as the home turf of main character Takumi Fujiwara and his legendary Toyota AE86. In real life Akina is actually called Haruna, a dormant stratovolcano in the Gunma Prefecture featuring five ways up and down the mighty mound via automobile (preferably something lightweight and rear-wheel). The most famous is the Jomo-Sanzan Panorama Highway, containing all of the off-camber, gradient shifting hairpin turns and switchbacks depicted in the show. Pro tip: first timers should go during the day when visibility is greatest, as there are many blind corners and certain points where the lane narrows down to a single car width. Ireland • The Wild Atlantic Way Number one on the list for longest drive is this epic 2,500-kilometre journey connecting Malin Head, County Donegal in the north to Kinsale, County Cork in the south. Mother Nature is in full display throughout the route with towering cliffs, deserted bays and beaches and weather-beaten islands. And here’s a fun fact for Star Wars lovers. Episode VII “The Force Awakens,” Episode VIII “The Last Jedi” and Episode IX “The Rise of Skywalker” were all partly filmed along Wild Atlantic Way at Loop Head, the Dingle Peninsula and Skellig Michael Island off the coast of Kerry. 39

2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross

Bold Styling and Superior Handling Just the Beginning

The 2022 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is the next step in the evolution of the Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) first introduced in production form to the global market in 2018. Built to slot in between the RVR and Outlander, the first Eclipse Cross showcased a bold, new direction for Mitsubishi Motors design language, and this carries forward to the reimagined 2022 model.

40

In the same way the new Outlander has been revised from top to bottom, the Eclipse Cross has received significant attention paid to the front, side and rear exterior design, as well as the interior cabin experience. And it is an excellent step forward that pays significant rewards for the driver and all passengers.

In real world terms, the Eclipse Cross is equally capable around town where short bursts of acceleration may be required in stop and go traffic, or cruising on the highway between large cities on your way to the office, or taking that long-awaited cross country family trip with bags and pets along for the ride.

The 2022 Eclipse Cross is available in four trim levels starting with the ES, SE, SEL and the range-topping GT. Mitsubishi Motors’ exceptional S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) system is standard across all trims.

Braking is quick and controlled with ventilated front and solid rear disc brakes, plus anti-lock brakes that include Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) paired with S-AWC. In heavy-braking situations, ABS allows the wheel to keep turning and not lock, so braking power is maintained and stops happen quickly and controlled on all road surfaces. The Eclipse Cross is perfectly suited for the rigors of driving in all four seasons in Canada.

Powertrain: Powering the new Eclipse Cross is a 1.5L direct injection turbocharged 4-cylinder engine matched to a CVT transmission with sport mode. It delivers a robust 152 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 184 pound-feet of torque at 2,000-3,000 rpm. Steering wheel mounted paddle-shifters allow for up and down selection through 8 gear ratios for added control and performance.

Exterior: New is an elegant way of understating just how much thought and design has gone into the 2022 Eclipse Cross. For starters, the front dynamic shield design features available sophisticated LED 41

headlights that not only look stylish, but function at the highest level. A new grille adds further distinction, as does the blackout trim featured on the GT model. At the rear, bold angular styling continues, but it is less pointed than the previous model while retaining its uniqueness from any other CUV currently in the marketplace. Contoured taillights not only look inviting, but they offer the practical benefit of getting noticed for their style and call to action during the day or night with their sharp design and bright glow. Interior: Step inside the new Eclipse Cross and you quickly realize there is a level of comfort and convenience not found in most CUV’s with a price starting well below $30,000 CAD. Seating is for five and there is plenty of head, hip, shoulder and legroom for both front and rear occupants. In the GT model featured here, a 6-way power driver’s seat and 4-way power passenger seat is standard. Heated front seats are standard on all trim levels in 2022, a welcome feature especially here in Canada, with heated rear added to the SEL and GT models.

42

Dual-zone climate control in the SE, SEL and GT models works flawlessly and heats or cools the vehicle quickly. A thick, sporty 3-spoke leatherwrapped steering wheel houses audio, voicecontrol and cruise control switches, with adaptive cruise control standard on SEL and GT models. It feels good to the touch and offers a solid connection to what’s happening on the road. Large white on black gauges provide easy-to-read information and there are a host of buttons to the left and right of the steering wheel for fine-tuning the Eclipse Cross to the way you drive. Storage is always an issue with vehicles today, and there is plenty of it placed throughout the interior cabin. From large front door pockets, a centre console with storage and dual cupholders, plus behind the front seat storage pouches and a folding center armrest with cupholders for backseat passengers. Leather seating is featured in the GT, while a heated steering wheel is standard on all but the ES model. Infotainment: Mitsubishi Motors is renowned for its electronics and this is not lost on the Eclipse Cross as it delivers dynamic sound throughout the range. The GT model gets the Mitsubishi Power

Sound System with 8 speakers for excellent audio throughout the cabin. Even with the available dualpanel power panoramic sunroof fully open, the interior is quiet and refined with hardly a whisper of outside air to interrupt the musical performance or never-ending sports talk radio update. Safety: Eclipse Cross is designed with safety at its core. Standard equipment includes a full compliment of 7 airbags, Anti-lock Braking System with EBD, stability and traction control, brake override and that is just the start. SE, SEL and GT models add Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, plus Lane Departure Warning and Adaptive Cruise Control on the SEL and GT. Drive: S-AWC and four unique drive modes are standard in the Eclipse Cross for 2022, delivering traction and power where it is needed most in all settings. This includes Normal, Snow, Gravel and Eco.

Normal offers the performance needed for most summer drives, dirt road excursions or a midday downpour. But for those times when that backroad to the cottage is little less obvious than you first thought, or driving through that sudden snowfall, its good to know the Eclipse has you covered with Snow and Gravel modes. Eco mode driving helps to improve fuel economy, without sacrificing power, and that is important in this time of rising fuel costs. Ride quality of the Eclipse Cross is exceptional; bumps, potholes and uneven paved surfaces are no match for this roadworthy utility vehicle. Conclusion: The 2022 Eclipse Cross has been redesigned to meet the needs of today’s compact sport utility driver. It offers bold styling, a refined interior, all-weather driving prowess and room for five. With plenty of storage space and comfort, it is the perfect choice for Canadian families to start their next road adventure in style.

Five Guys, A Clean Sheet Of Paper And A Car Company Paul Simmonds: The Man Behind Mitsubishi’s 10-year Warranty Retires

It all began in a small cluster of rented office space on Matheson Boulevard. And yes, this is a true story, one about Paul Simmonds, the retiring Vice-President of Sales and Marketing at Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada. And it’s also an origins story going back 20 years to the very founding of the company. “It was just five guys and a clean sheet of paper, and we had to put a car company together,” chuckles Simmonds, the upbeat, good-humoured people-person who is retiring at the end of March 2022 – he being the last of those Founding Five. “Yes, it was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun.” 44

Drift back to 2002 for a moment. Simmonds was part of team that included President Randy Sears and finance chief Andy Chong, and Tony Laframboise who would later become President among others. In just months, they needed to secure a permanent office, recruit staff, create processes and policies, develop dealers and so much else. Simmonds notes that the team had a lot of help and support from their counterparts in the United States, “but we also needed a lot of customization for Canada. The taxation (regime) is different, the regulations are different, the market is different and all these other things.”

So here we are in 2022, with Mitsubishi Canada celebrating its 20th anniversary and coming off an extraordinary 2021 with an industry-leading sales rebound. As Simmonds prepares to leave the company he helped to establish, Mitsubishi Canada’s 2021 sales were up 147 per cent. “2021 is a true testament of Mitsubishi Motors ability to adapt, to navigate the ever-changing and challenging environment,” Kenji Harada, President and CEO, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada, Inc.

“The last two years have been really crazy,” says Simmonds, whose team was deeply involved in: • the launch of the all-new Outlander, a completely redesigned flagship vehicle and a definite turning point for the brand; • the launch of the all-new Outlander in dealerships in Spring 2021; • the launch of the refreshed Eclipse Cross in Spring 2021; • in fact, the redesign of every vehicle in their tight line up; • the continued growth and investment in dealerships, helping them provide a safe environment to buy and services vehicles; •

the launched Click Shop, an online end-to-end tool that helped facilitate dealer sales

• supporting the community with a $150,000-plus donation to Food Bank of Canada and aiding the Red Cross BC Flood Campaign.

45

All during the worst months of the pandemic. “Working from home, Zoom meetings, and the rest. It’s impressive how well it’s worked,” he says. “Here we are two years down the road and we have successfully navigated this – managed every function remotely. That’s not to say it’s been easy. But it has been incredible.”

“So, I went over to Hyundai for the first five years,” he says. It was exciting, but a lot of work. Remember the Pony days? It was incredible. The first year at Hyundai we sold 8,000 cars. The second year we did 25,000. Then 55,000. Then 80,000. Then it fell off a cliff before turning itself around to the success it is today.”

Perhaps it’s fitting that the last of the original Founding Five is leaving after helping to steer the company not through two years of not just a Canada-wide crisis, but a global one. Then again, Simmonds’ career has been all about adapting to change and meeting challenges. He is something of a self-styled corporate executive but with the heart and sensibilities of an entrepreneur.

That’s another long story, of course. From Hyundai, there was a brief interval back in the retail side of the business, as a parts and service manager, and then another call – another OEM opportunity.

“I would lean toward the entrepreneur side of things,” he says. “There is a bit of balance there, but I definitely think entrepreneur.” Simmonds’ career path to Mitsubishi amounts to a series of start-up companies – to a history of helping to create something out of, well, nothing. After slightly more than a decade selling cars at retail, interspersed with periods working as a parts and service manager and an interlude in logistics at a non-automotive OEM (original equipment manufacturer), Simmonds literally got the call that changed his life. A contact he’d worked with at the OEM reached out. Hyundai Canada was starting up and they needed a manager for logistic, parts, supply and inventory. That was in the early 1980s. 46

“Do you want to come and work at Lada,” asked John Wright, a former colleague. “I don’t think so, John,” I said. And he said, “Do me a favour. Let’s go to dinner and chat. “ “The next thing I knew,” laughs Simmonds, “I was his new vice-president for technical services.” He calls that interval a “very interesting time,” which allowed him to learn “a tremendous amount about the safety, emissions, compliance side of the business.” Then it was on to Toyota before being recruited to help start up Daewoo Canada. Finally, the Mitsubishi start-up team came calling. “It’s strange to say I’ve been here at Mitsubishi for 20 years,” concedes Simmonds. “Because as you can probably sense from my story. I was involved

in the start-up operations of a few companies, not the ongoing operations. That represented an interesting challenge here. But I like the people and the product so I’ve been really happy here.”

“And it’s been a huge success for us; it’s the strongest (warranty) offering in the industry,” he says. “It remains one of the top purchase reasons to this day.”

Today, Simmonds says, the Mitsubishi customer is higher income, looking for high style and leadingtechnology. We’ve kept our loyal customers who continue to look to Mitsubishi for its reliability and value for money.

A second milestone came in 2009-2010 with the establishment of Mitsubishi Canada’s parts and distribution centre which today is highly ranked for operational efficiency and is central to customer satisfaction on the service side of the business. A key supporter in that effort, again spearheaded by Simmonds, was current Mitsubishi Canada President Harada.

A new customer base is attracted to Mitsubishi’s recent shift in strategy to SUVs and a commitment by the brand to introduce product innovation like the disruptive Outlander PHEV. But the journey here hasn’t always been easy. Simmonds argues that the Mitsubishi Canada story became charged with optimism with the arrival of the landmark 10-year bumper-to-bumper warranty launched for the 2003 model year. In fact, some around Mitsubishi Canada call him the Father of the 10-year Warranty. Back in the early 2003, he says, Mitsubishi needed to stand out in a crowded market, says Simmonds. “We were not well known,” he notes, describing the internal discussions around “what we needed to do differently. What if we come up with a stronger warranty?” At the time, Simmonds was in charge of aftersales, so it was his job to crunch the numbers – to look closely at warranty costs and determine if the 10-year-warranty would be viable. “The costs were very low and that made the argument easier” he chuckles, though he concedes it took several months to get final approval.

“We’ve been friends since 2008,” Simmonds says of Harada. “He came over for four years to help get that (parts depot) project approved and launch it with our own systems and processes. It was a big undertaking.” “Now fast-forward to 2022, new President Kenji Harada is charged with leading the company to its next chapter with the launch of the next-generation Outlander PHEV. This vehicle means so much for the company and its going to be incredible. I’m sorry to miss it but I’m also happy to cheer from the side lines…hopefully from some place warm.” Looking ahead to the next phase of his life, Simmonds says traveling, golf, curling, time with family and friends, and lazy days at the cottage, are all on the horizon. And while looking back on all those start-ups and then shifting to ongoing operations at Mitsubishi, he most fondly thinks about the relationships he’s developed over a career. “This is a people business. Cars are our product, but the business is people. Whether a dealer or a customer. Those relationships are what drives the success,” he says.

2022 Mitsubishi RVR

Mitsubishi’s Top-Selling Vehicle – a Stand Out

Standing out in a crowded market is tough these days. It takes a fresh design, class leading capability, modern technology and a focus on driver and passenger safety. When it comes to the ever-popular subcompact Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment, the Mitsubishi RVR not only stands out, but it also stands tall.

Whether optioned with the 148 horsepower, 2.0 L, dual-overhead cam, MIVEC 4 cylinder engine or the larger, 2.4 L, 168 horsepower MIVEC engine (available in SE, SEL, LE and GT trims), RVR has ample performance on tap. Mated to the third generation INVECS (Intelligent & Innovative Vehicle Electronic Control System), Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), RVR has been tuned for both responsive performance and efficient civility. Combined city and highway fuel economy is rated at 8.8L/100kms (2.0 L engine FWD), 9.2 L/100km (2.0 L engine 4WD) or 9.4 L/100km (2.4 L engine 4WD). 48

With roots in the World Rally Championship and the famed Dakar Rally, Mitsubishi Motors’ off-road capabilities are legendary. The RVR benefits from the experience and knowledge gained in these performance arenas by incorporating Mitsubishi Motors’ advanced All-Wheel-Control (AWC) system. The system allows drivers to choose between 2 wheel-drive (2WD) 4 wheel-drive Auto (4WD) drive modes to enable RVR to generate the utmost traction and control in a myriad of terrain and conditions.

Chassis tuning and a compact wheelbase mean that the RVR delivers a nimble driving experience. The multi-link rear suspension and MacPherson struts up front have been optimised to deliver performance focused handling, without sacrificing compliance and comfort. Combined with active, intelligent Traction Control Logic and Anti-Lock Braking systems, the RVR is up for any challenge. Inside, RVR treats occupants to an efficient, upscale and comfortable interior. The dash is highlighted by an intuitive, 8” touchscreen that incorporates a Smartphone Link Display Audio system that works with both Android AutoTM and Apple CarPlay. To ensure you can enjoy your music to its fullest while the road and RVR entertains you, a 710-watt, Rockford Fosgate sound system can be optioned. Heated front seats and premium materials give the spacious interior a refined feel throughout the lineup and there are multiple charging options available to keep your devices ready to capture all your adventures. A large, fixed-glass panoramic roof is available on the GT AWC version of the RVR. To help you and your family arrive safely, Blind Spot Warning and Lane Departure Warning systems can also be optioned on RVR to let you know when a vehicle is approaching your blind spot or when your RVR is leaving its lane, while Mitsubishi Motors’ Rear Cross Traffic Alert system detects vehicles

Starting MSRP for model year 2022*

approaching your sides while you’re backing up. Forward Collision Mitigation with Pedestrian Detection senses vehicles and pedestrians in front of you and helps you brake to avoid or reduce the impact of frontal collisions. The RVR’s modern sheet metal is the perfect complement to its capability, performance and efficiency. The hood, fender and front & rear bumpers were sculpted to give the RVR a stylish aggression and sophisticated stance. The Mitsubishi Motors’ familial Dynamic Shield front grill is worn proudly by RVR, and the LED headlamps add more than just a sporty touch. RVR is an execution of design that is unique to its class. The rearward sloping roofline continues the sporty aesthetic of RVR, while still maintaining roomy and accommodating rear seats. The rear hatch opens to reveal up to 1,402 litres of cargo space with a trunk floor that sits at the ideal height for easy placement and removal. Couple all of these features with Mitsubishi Motors comprehensive 10-5-5-Warranty that provides ten years of powertrain protection (up to 160,000 km) for your RVR – and five year basic (100,000 km) and roadside for five years – and you have a compact SUV that has clearly risen to the top of its class.

Mi Design

The Dynamics Of Design With Seiji Watanabe

Seiji Watanabe is based in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, where one of Mitsubishi Motors’ major manufacturing and R&D facilities are located. A graduate of Tsukuba University, School of Art and Design in 1987 Watanabe joined Mitsubishi Motors Corporation in 2018 as Executive Design Director. As head of design, he oversees design studios around the globe. With the introduction of the new Mitsubishi Outlander, we wanted to get his perspective on what makes the Outlander so unique in the marketplace and how it fits with the brands unique design language. In an exclusive zoom conversation for Mi Magazine, Watanabe-san shares his insights.

50

51

Where does inspiration for the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander come from? We have set a design personality for the vehicle, like a human personality. The design keyword is Bold Stride, showing confidence, adventurous and generous personality. Confident means that it is full of confidence, strong and positive. It is shown in the high location of the eye and the forward position of the grille. Generous means plenty of space for off-road performance and an attitude of calmness because of physical abilities for highperformance driving anywhere.

52

The front design language is called the Dynamic Shield. It is a perfect fusion of performance and performance and protection, with the grille of the Lancer Evolution with a big air intake and the bumper of Pajero/Montero. It is a combination of our asset of Mitsubishi strengths. The surface of the body side is three-dimensional with powerful fenders and balance between the tire and the body. Hexaguard Horizon language is inspired from the backdoor of the Pajero/Montero and shows off-road capability and stability. We were particular about the width with a good stance to show high performance. These identities start with this Outlander.

The design is backed by Mitsubishi Motor’s technology and unique know-how in the rally activities. Adventurous means Outlander always has a challenging spirit and knows the risk of adventures. That is why the eyes are sharp and look forward with adventurous spirit. I drove this car in Hokkaido. It was very nice and controllable. It felt as if the vehicle and human are unified, and I can control the vehicle smoothly and easily. I was very surprised. After driving, I thought that the design matches the performance. Not only design, but also the technology is sharp and gives confident driving. Does the Outlander’s design process reflect your company’s overall design philosophy? Mitsubishi design is always accelerating to the next stage with our Robust & Ingenious design philosophy. Robust means securing confidence, performance and functionality for customers. Ingenious means challenging to create new things to set our unique position in a different way from other companies. From Mitsubishi history, our strength is the rigid driving performance backed by rally activities. We have confidence in our SUV and 4WD technologies. The Outlander is the first and next generation of authentic Mitsubishi-ness and the front runner

of our evolving design strategy. Our vision for the future aims to match the customers’ adventurous spirit with our mobility and design to excite and answer the needs of aspirational customers. We have an asset of rally activities and high potential technology, and we enhance this asset through design. We also provide trust for the quality of the vehicle through the customers’ lives and usage. What differentiates Outlander’s design in today’s competitive marketplace? Mitsubishi design invites customers to augmented possibilities, to drive their ambition. We are particular about making solid, robust and meaningful design. At a glance, customers can see authenticity and not fakeness. This is important for us, because we are challenging other companies even though we have a long history. We secured competitive roominess with the width, and the overall length and height are mostly the same level as the previous Outlander. The stance and the width are different with roomier interior. We were particular about showing performance image backed by Mitsubishi technology. It was important to show the Mitsubishi brand and technology in this flagship model. We perfectly controlled the stance/body, body/tire location, and A-pillar/tire location. We reformed the proportions and packaging.

The Art Of Travel Experience Cuba

One trip to be on every car enthusiast’s Bucket List is to the Republic of Cuba in the Northern Caribbean Sea. This island is a unique time capsule of architecture, cultures and of course vintage vehicles. Before 1959 Cuba was known as the Vegas of the Caribbean with heavy influence from the United States and the lifestyles of the rich and famous due to its proximity across the Gulf of Mexico. All that changed with a revolution and the island is currently under Communist rule leading to a trade embargo on the USA, making time stand still in Cuba for more than a half a century. The beautiful world influenced architecture is starting to show its wear, but a slow rebirth is underway with new foreign investment taking root and the spirit of Cuba stronger than ever.

54

55

But the cars are the stars and you will be amazed at the variety of marks and ingenuity of the Cubans that drive and own them. Most cars have been passed down through the generations like a treasured piece of jewellery. Without access to new cars or parts from the USA many have been lovingly restored and parts Macgyvered together to make these classic machines work. Havana is a must see and you will need a few days to take it all in. Hang out at de Marti and Neptuno Parque Central and prepare to be entertained and amazed at the variety of vehicles chugging and clunking by as the morning rush takes place. Some cars are classics and then some very utilitarian. Most Cuban cars are family sedans that double as Taxi Cabs picking fares up and dropping people in a symphony of synchronised chaos. It’s quite a sight, if you watch them long enough it starts to makes sense.

Once you get tired of the Havana scene you can hire a ride and visit the more rural Viñuales in the Pinar Del Rio province for some beautiful mountains and a good Hand rolled cigar.

58

Another great destination is Trinidad of Cuba. Stay a few days and enjoy one of the oldest ports of Cuba where the architecture, culture and daily activities have not changed over the centuries.

It’s not a quiet beach resort but an adventure. No US banks, no US bank machines or debit cards, no cell phone reception. The Cuban Peso C.U.P is the only currency. But ironically US cash is accepted and exchanged everywhere!!

Travelling to Cuba is an adventure and if you are prepared it is a trip of a lifetime like no other. The people and places are wonderful, they love Canadians and the car culture is the best!

The Cottage Experience Chef Alexandra Blagdon

At 8 years old Alexandra Blagdon fell in love with cooking. Her culinary adventure started with apple and ham omelettes for her mother and mastering the easy bake oven. For the remainder of her elementary school life, she made all sorts of creations — which included a cheesecake business that turned over zero profit but always made enough to provide another cheesecake. Little did she know, she was pursuing the life of a chef. She attended Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland which focused on fresh produce and respect for all ingredients. With the luxury of having 100 acres of organic farm land, came harvesting the vegetables and milking the cows. They truly embraced the farm-totable mentality which inspired her to forage in her home of Newfoundland & Labrador. Shortly after culinary school, she went back to Newfoundland to join the kitchen at The Reluctant Chef. They would create a 5 course tasting menu that changed bi-weekly and was redesigned to accommodate any food aversions. While working directly under the chef in a kitchen the size of a closet, she learned a wide variety of cuisines and skills that would follow her throughout her career. After a year at The Reluctant Chef Alexandra moved to Tuscany, Italy to work at Villa Bordoni. Surrounded by olive trees and vineyards, Villa Bordoni focused on traditional Italian dishes with a modern twist. Throughout her stay she focused on making fresh pastas, picking fresh figs and lemons in the backyard, tasting the varieties of olive oil, and enjoying all things food and wine. After experiencing the authenticity of food culture in Europe she couldn’t stop travelling and cooking in various countries. She has shifted her passion for culinary into the world of education with her online cookery school The Alder Cottage. The Alder Cottage now has students all over the world who partake in classes virtually from their own kitchens! Join Alex online for a culinary experience to remember or in person if you ever find yourself in Newfoundland! 61

From The Kitchen Alex was walking through Montreal searching for Tacos & Margaritas when she was forced to accept that it was only 11 AM and the majority of taco establishments weren’t opening their doors until 11:30 - and for this gal, she was simply way too hungry to wait. Next door was a sushi restaurant that had been open since 9 AM. Not exactly wanting to start the day with sushi it was time to venture into the menu and see what other options were available at this hour. Then we reached the page that had nothing but dumplings. Boiled, pan seared, fried, veggie, pork, spicy, mixed etc. What do you do when you’re faced with so many options? YOU GET A MIX OF EVERYTHING!

Mix together with ground pork, soy sauce, sesame oil, cumin & ground coriander. VEGETABLE MIXTURE Shred carrots & cabbage. Thinly slice onion. Grate garlic & ginger. Sauté all ingredients in pan until soft & aromatic. Season to taste. Chill in fridge — until completely cool. SHAPING Line up your dumpling wrappers. Fill small bowl with water. Brush water around the half the perimeter of the wrapper. Place a generous teaspoon of filling in the centre of each wrapper. Fold over & seal tight. Fold edges over each other to create a ripple effect. COOKING Set up steamer — fill pot with 2 inches of water, place steamer on top of pot [tight fit], & bring water to boil. Line the bottom of steamer with parchment paper. Place dumplings in steamer — nicely spaced apart. Steam dumplings with lid on — 6 minutes. Pro tip — frequently check pot to ensure there’s always 2 inches of water, add more as needed. Heat nonstick pan on medium heat — coat bottom of pan with oil. Fry steamed dumplings until golden on each side. Pro tip — don’t overcrowd your pan while frying. DIPPING SAUCE Combine ingredients & place in small bowl. 63

A Somm’s Tale

Sommelier Scott Patrick Cowan

For 17 years Scott Patrick Cowan chained himself to restaurant life in St. John’s, taking one intermission to assist in the beverage program and training of seven restaurants at AAA-Four Diamond Fairmont Château Lake Louise, which had grossed the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence. When he realized that he had to learn over 400 wines by memory without tasting, he was very frightened. Completing his certification in Seattle through the Court of Master Sommeliers in 2013, Scott has delighted in helping guests and colleagues throughout the ever-growing expanse of restaurants in Newfoundland. Oftentimes remembering the wines on his list without tremendous fear, led by fluke. Guided by Master Sommelier Cameron Douglas of New Zealand and Seamus Dooley, who represented Canada in the Competition of Best Young Sommelier in the World held by Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, Scott went onto win the Best Sommelier of Atlantic Canada award in 2021, and compete for the title of best Sommelier of Canada. While he was disqualified from the competition, they did allow him to accompany the others on numerous winery tours and master classes, where he stubbornly refused to spit. While consulting, he has been fortunate enough to succeed in helping new restaurants land on the En Route Magazine Best New Restaurant Lists, Canada’s Top 100 Restaurant Lists, and Canada’s Top 50 Bar Lists. He is currently studying to compete again for the title of best sommelier in Canada for 2023, staggering through the rudiments of the Spanish language, finishing something between a novella and a novel, and enjoying the serenity of living next to Quidi Vidi Lake. You can find him at Mallard Cottage, being wildly unprofessional and silly on the dining room floor. He often bumps into bar stools after soliloquys about Italian wine.

65

The Perfect Pairing Hinterland winery based out of Prince Edward County, Ontario - the nether regions of where European grape vines grow, often fitted with sleeve-like armor or buried underground in the winter - are naught to mess around with. Their stylings are crisp and lean if made into sparkling. Funky and defiant in their natural wine efforts. The winemaker Jonas, calls himself “The Viking.” Their Red Herring Syrah, in the years that Dame Nature allows, is a smoldering fire of lingonberry. It cannot be made every year. During the winter, temperatures of -22°C can permanently damage the vine. Frost is a jack knife. All of these factors make their syrah virtually abominable. It’s a wonder that pinot noir, the least hardy vine of all, continues to avoid extinction. Best here, with dumplings would be Hinterland’s Blanc de Noirs (red grapes made into clear, sparkling wine). As feeble as pinot noir is to grow (even a little Spring wind can cause a tailspin) it is a virtuoso at the dining room table. It savors the challenges of toosweet root vegetables. Umami in soya that can put another grape to its knees - bitter and defeated. Frothing, pinot noir anticipates it. These bubbles are an Olympic ribbon dance with tactile dumplings and trickling ponzu sauce. Hinterland Blanc de Noirs, grown on top of fossilized shellfish, broaches the argument that wine can take something from the soil - such as the salt from a dried up ocean, and bridge that to any food with the same treatment and delicacy.

66

Don’t like Vikings? Don’t eat salt? Try Culmina Unicus from the Okanagan Valley. Its namesake references that this is the culmination of a lifetime of viticultural efforts. Unicus means that it was the first planting of the Austrian grape grüner veltliner to adapt to the soils of Canada. It’s raised in a concrete egg, ancient Greek amphora, and still sees oak. In spite of this, it is delicate and packed with tropical fruit concentration. It is mineral, but not one bit salty. Unicus can be the bridge between zealots and novices. I would introduce it to my mom, who rarely leaves the New Zealand sauvignon blanc aisle. I would pour it tableside for high profile international clients, confident that it possesses old world charm and gravitas. Unicus is a unicorn, only because it is fearless with food ingredient monsters (sorry, Chef). The vegetables may even lend it more fruit. And at the very least, a note of lemon grass will be placed on top of every sip. Don’t like wine? I’ve heard whispers from brewmasters and cicerones that the beer style Saison - a farmhouse ale - is great with dumplings. It’s bottle conditioned to have the same froth as a bubbly wine. Saison Dupont from Tourpes, Belgium gets my vote. Before it was imported (and perfected) Belgian shepherds used to drink litres of this style of beer a day out of a sheep’s bladder. I recommend a tulip shaped beer glass instead, or heck, even a half-cleaned tea cup. They might not have enjoyed their lukewarm beer with mouth-watering dumplings (we don’t know!) but you should. And chill it in the fridge if you can.

Nomadic Indulgence: Must Stay Hotels And Resorts It may seem an obvious overstatement to claim anything as “must stay”, but one of our goals with Mi Magazine is to inspire you to get out and explore this amazing world for yourself and then find that perfect place at day’s end to relax and rejuvenate. With that in mind, our recommendations for where to stay will always feature hotels and resorts in North America and at least one in a unique location around the globe. Why? Because as a Mitsubishi owner, you have the perfect vehicle to explore the open road and see where it takes you. And if that road happens to lead to one of these exceptional vacation properties, then our work here is done, at least until the next time. Let the inspiration begin!

Oak Bay Beach Hotel • Victoria, British Columbia www.oakbaybeachhotel.com

Canada’s #1 Hotel in 2021 as ranked by Condé Nast Traveller, the drive into Oak Bay Beach Hotel winds through a series of city streets and past oceanside parks, with coffee shops at every corner and pedestrians crowding sidewalks. It feels more suburban than getaway, but this makes the surprise of arriving at the hotel even more enticing. A grand fountain anchors the round, interlocking brick driveway where doorman arrive to take your luggage and escort you in. Large windows face the Pacific Ocean; the view is breathtaking. This is British Columbia at its finest! The original hotel was constructed as a Victorian Mansion and dates back to 1927. Fire destroyed the building in 1930, but it was quickly rebuilt and continued on as the place to see and be seen until 2006 when it closed to undergo a complete, modern-day resort renovation. Today, a total of 100 rooms range in size from standard guest rooms to one-bedroom suites and the two-level 1,072-1,225 sq. ft Penthouse suites. Furnishings are designed to be comfy with thick duvets, earth-toned colours and dark wood fireplace surrounds.

68

Dining takes place in three locations. Locals are well-versed in what’s on the menu or on tap at the Snug Pub with its indoor and outdoor seating areas. Like the pub, the formal dining room faces the ocean, with floor-to-ceiling windows, natural wood trim and a grand fireplace adding to the warmth and charm. FARO is the setting for wood stone pizza, fresh salads, quick bites and a cocktail or glass of wine in a casual setting. Activities at the hotel are in no short supply. A large free-form pool overlooks the Pacific Ocean and offers poolside dining when you need a quick bite. Take advantage of the adjacent mineral pools, or just lounge and enjoy the view. The top-rated Boathouse Spa offers a full menu of services and is Victoria’s only oceanfront spa. Pets are welcomed as V.I.P. guests with pet-friendly rooms available and there are plenty of island and ocean activities in the area to take advantage of. In B.C, the opportunities for exploration and fun are endless.

Hotel Joaquin • Laguna Beach, California www.hoteljoaquin.com

If the notion of walking on the beach where Hollywood’s elite have strolled since the early 1900’s is what you would call a little piece of paradise, Hotel Joaquin has a room with a view you may want to reserve. With the tagline, “Soul is our style”, it’s not hard to imagine this might be the best place to recharge your personal batteries and that of your Outlander PHEV, before heading to Los Angeles for a night of big city fun and excitement. Purchased in 2016 by Auric Road, the original Motor Inn at Laguna Beach has been completely reborn as a Pacific Coast resort retreat. Designed by Studio Robert McKinley, rooms range in size from the compact and elegant SEL and CRES to the spacious and sophisticated BARTO, LA VUE and SOLEIL. Some feature mountain views, others face the ocean, but all showcase sunshine and Pacific breezes along with natural wood elements, bright white interiors and deep, comfy bedding.

70

Breakfast, lunch and dinner, or just hanging out for drinks in the late afternoon and evening, takes place at Saline. The Mediterranean inspired menu is designed to energize guests for a busy day of activities, or to relax at day’s end with low alcohol cocktails so you wake in the morning refreshed and ready for new adventures. Poolside spritzers and backgammon games in your double daybed are the perfect recipe for a tranquil stay. Walk two minutes and the staff will set you up oceanside at beautiful Shaw’s Cove. Here you can also take advantage of the snorkelling, surfing and kayaking options available at the Adventure Outpost. Take a city bike for a ride, or jump in the passenger seat of a 90’s Land Rover to start your trek up Laguna’s Top of the World trail, eventually reaching the summit on foot. It is all designed to allow guests to renew and get plugged back into what’s most important.

Chablé Maroma • Mexico www.chablemaroma.com

If the goal of a resort is to provide guests with the opportunity to really escape off the beaten path, listing the kilometre number as your official address is a sure way to get things started in the right direction. The address at Chablé Maroma in Mexico simply says Km. 51; not 52, not 50 and not a business address number. Be sure to check your mileage, or you may just drive right past. For those who arrive, the only thing left to do is to find a beach chair, an umbrella and their favourite pair of sunglasses. There are no standard hotel rooms at the resort, rather it is characterized by exclusive villas and suites, including the exotic Presidential villa. Mayan culture is celebrated throughout the resort, with a focus on working in harmony with the jungle and surrounding beach setting. Warm wood accents are featured on the walls and floors. Villas highlight xucun stone, marble and galzrza quarried stone. Colours are light and natural, striking a harmonious balance between modern-day guest requirements and a back-to-nature approach. Dining is considered an artform at Chablé Maroma. Two restaurants, KABAN and BU’UL, along with the Raw Bar By BU’UL, take their inspiration from Chef Jorge Vallejo and his top-rated restaurant Quintonil in 71

Mexico City. Under the care of Executive Chef Luis Quiroz, the menu changes daily and is based on what the guests want rather than just dictating what will be served. Homemade breads, a juice bar and full menu of vegetarian and vegan options are always available. The Spa also incorporates the wellness of Mayan culture. Getting in touch with nature and in tune with the rhythms of life is a way to honour the past and present. A full menu of services is available, with the three goals of Purification, Balance and Transformation defining the Signature Treatment Programs. For those looking for a little more excitement, there is much to see and do in the area surrounding the hotel with Playa Del Carmen a short drive away. But then it might just be the best thing to do at Chablé Maroma is to simply do nothing at all. 72

Sheen Falls Lodge • Ireland www.sheenfallslodge.ie

A member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux group and one of Ireland’s finest five star hotels, Sheen Falls Lodge embodies all the beauty and tranquility for which Ireland is so revered. It’s name denotes not only the style of accommodations; your home away from home, but the fact it is situated directly beside a waterfall, so the sounds of babbling water and the relaxation it brings are always close at hand. Rooms and suites are designed to induce relaxation, but as you would expect in a grand Irish lodge, minimalism is no where to be found. Here the theme is the balminess of an open fire, deep carpeting on the floors, comfy couches and bedding with plenty of pillows highlighting warm earthy tones. Expansive windows with thick wood trim and accents showcase the natural setting of Kenmare Bay. For an overthe-top stay, 2 and 4-bedroom villas offer the tranquility of a thatched roof cottage or home with unparalleled comfort. Dining is an artform at every Relais & Châteaux hotel and Sheen Falls Lodge is no exception. The Falls Restaurant is a 2 AA Rosette awarded elegant or casual dining experience, it’s all up to you. An extensive wine cellar with more than 10,000 bottles is certain to have the perfect pour. Close by, the Sheen Cocktail Bar offers terrace seating in the spring and summer. Afternoon tea and casual fare is enjoyed in the Sheen Lounge. The list of activities available on the property is extensive and benefits from the surrounding countryside. Located on a 300 acre estate, the options include horseback riding, falconry, salmon fishing, golf, clay pigeon shooting, tennis, kayaking, cycling and more. Nearby the remains of a 6th Century monastic settlement on Skellig Islands is worth exploring not only for its rich history, but as the setting for the 2017 movie Star Wars The Last Jedi. At the end, a therapeutic massage at The Easanna Spa is the perfect way to restore your inner force.

Until next time, travel well! 73

Mi Future

Mitsubishi e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT

The Mitsubishi e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT is more than just a styling exercise underpinned by wishful thinking. It is the embodiment of where Mitsubishi Motors is heading as a car company and, more importantly, the realization of everything we have ever been.

74

Sleek and powerful, the styling combines Mitsubishi’s passion for performance with the functional needs to navigate any terrain. An elevated, SUV stance with broad shoulders, narrow hips and short overhangs exudes comfort, power and agility. Our quintessential Dynamic Shield design is taken to its next level. The familial black grille is shielded under glass, a subtle hint that this car is indeed a high-performance electric vehicle. Race-derived engineering techniques like the large air intakes have been exquisitely tucked in below the headlamps to route cooling air towards the electric brakes, turning function into beautiful form. The hexagon shape at the rear draws inspiration from the legendary Mitsubishi Pajero, a hallmark of off-road driving, and one of the iconic chapters of Mitsubishi’s heritage.

Inside, the cockpit of the e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT welcomes the driver and passengers into an open, airy and spacious greenhouse. The driver is ensconced in a cockpit that is both familiar and futuristic, highlighted by an instrument panel that appears to float in front of them. A large, intuitive and interactive screen spans the full width of the dashboard. It displays outside conditions, navigation and coaching information – rally racing is in our blood, afterall. That large screen is flanked by two smaller screens that display images from the front and rear cameras. Full-frame windows provide near unobstructed 360-degree visibility, for a feeling more akin to a jet fighter than a car. And that feeling continues when you drive e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT too.

75

The e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT uses three high-torque, high-performance electric motors, fed by a highcapacity battery system to deliver smooth and powerful performance. Acceleration is instantaneous at all speeds but also controlled and optimised for changing conditions. Our three-motor 4WD system places a single motor in the front to drive the front wheels and two others dedicated to the rear. Those rear motors are complemented by a new Active Yaw Control (AYC) system that transmits power through an electronically controlled torquevectoring AYC unit.

76

Active Yaw Control uses individual brakes to responsively and precisely control the driving forces, through electric calipers that supersede the conventional hydraulic caliper. The effects of the system can be felt and appreciated immediately, even at low speeds when G-forces are low. All of this is integrated with Mitsubishi’s unique and dynamic Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system. Developed on the company’s all-conquering World Rally Championship and Paris-Dakar rally cars, it will ensure optimal and precise traction and performance in all conditions.

Combine these technologies with the fact that the drive battery powering the e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT is located under the floor, mid-ship of the vehicle, providing a low centre of gravity, and you have a vehicle that is both incredibly stable, predictable and responsive as well. Whether driving around town, on expressways, or winding roads, the fully electric e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT always provides crisp and nimble handling that faithfully mirrors driver intent. Many of these technologies are already available in some form or another in many of Mitsubishi’s current lineup of vehicles. But with the e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT, we have pushed the envelope and taken things even further. The brain of the e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that has been designed specifically to heighten the driver’s capabilities. An array of sensors allows the AI system to instantly read changes in road and traffic conditions, as well as the driver’s intent.

Seamlessly coordinating driver intent with vehicle performance, the system supports drivers of all abilities. By making it easier and safer to control the vehicle, the driving experience is brought to a new level. There is also a special coaching function that allows the AI system to educate the driver, and seamlessly enhance their driving skill. After building a profile of the driver’s skill level, the system constructs a training program that provides advice through voice dialogue and a large dashboard display. As a result, drivers of all abilities quickly experience a vehicle that has become an extension of themselves, further enabling future Mitsubishi owners to drive their ambition like never before. Nobel Prize winning physicist Dennis Gabor once wrote that “the future cannot be predicted, but futures can be invented”. With the e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT, Mitsubishi Motors isn’t predicting the future, we’re inventing it.

Nova Scotia Seven Beaches Seven Days Grab The Beach Blanket And Go!

On the eighth day, we rested but we felt sad. There would be no beach today. For a stretch of seven days this past summer, every afternoon toward the end of our workfrom-home day, we packed up the beach blanket and headed out of the driveway. Our self-imposed mission? A beach a day for seven days within a 90-minute drive of our house in Halifax. Visiting beaches is easy in Nova Scotia. With 7,500 kilometres of coastline and a province almost completely surrounded by water, one is never more than 60 km from the ocean. You can escape the bustling city of Halifax and be at the seaside in less time than a weekday commute to work. And, after visiting seven beaches around our city, all we can say is: WOW! How lucky are we to have these white-sand, natural, spectacular beaches, practically at our doorstep!

79

Conrad’s Beach We were there on a weekday afternoon, so the beach was practically ours. It’s somewhat sheltered in a large cove. The waves that roll up onto the warm white sand are not really surf-worthy, but who cares? So accessible, right on the edge of Dartmouth, Conrad’s has a small parking lot and no facilities. This is probably why there are not many people on the beach. But again, who cares? It’s gorgeous, perfect for social distancing, and one of our favourites. Walking the length of the beach is a must. dropping people in a symphony of synchronised chaos. It’s quite a sight, if you watch them long enough it starts to makes sense.

Crystal Crescent Beach Crystal Crescent near Sambro is a beautiful natural beach that is rugged yet intimate. Speaking of natural, if you take the scenic hiking trail from the main beach, you’ll eventually get to another beach that has a reputation for being VERY natural. We honestly didn’t know about this ‘naturist’ beach until after we left. Honest. Sitting on the beach or strolling is lovely but the best part about being at Crystal Crescent is staring out at the island offshore with its lighthouse. The Sambro Island Lighthouse is the oldest standing and operating lighthouse in the Americas! The original interior tower, built in 1758, is intact. For 250 years, the light has guided vessels into and out of Halifax Harbour, through wars and peace, storms and calm, greeting immigrants, refugees and war brides. We will definitely be revisiting this beach, if only to walk to the third beach and have a peek. That’s all. Just a peek.

80

Rainbow Heaven When I told a friend that we had been to Rainbow Haven Beach on our self-imposed challenge, she commented: “I feel like all the people that were at the Liquor Dome on Friday night are at Rainbow Haven beach on Saturday.” (The Liquor Dome is a long-standing nickname for a club that throbs with dance music until the wee hours in downtown Halifax). Well, I guess the various deep-bass drum thuds coming from a few different pods of people gathered on the beach would indicate that, yes, my friend may be on to something. There are lifeguards so it’s a great beach for kids. If you want to be alone without the 808s vibrating the sand, go early in the day.

Crescent Beach We hit Crescent Beach in Lunenburg County on a spectacularly large, deep-blue-sky Saturday. We love everything wheeled so Crescent Beach is a stand-out because you can drive and park on the beach. The rear cargo floor of our Eclipse Cross quickly morphed into the best beach tailgater. Ever. Crescent Beach is exactly what it says, a twokilometre long, sandy crescent that consists of a beach and a parallel road behind the sand dunes. The sandbar connects the mainland to some of the LaHave Islands. Before we left the Crescent Beach area, we deemed it our duty to drive to the end of the road on Bush Island. What a calm and peaceful surprise. The drive from Halifax to Crescent Beach can be as direct as possible on Highway 103. However, we recommend Route 3. Take your time, stop in the charming, historic South Shore villages and towns, like Chester, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg.

81

Martinique This is probably the beach we’ve frequented the most. It’s far enough out of the city to feel like you’re getting away from it all, yet close enough for those ‘are we there yet?’ passengers. Martinique Beach is another long expanse of luscious white sand, Nova Scotia’s longest white-sand beach at 5 kilometres actually, with plenty of room to spread out. The drive along the Eastern Shore, a more rugged coastline than the one along the South Shore, is beautiful but we opted for the express Highway 107 that gets us to Musquodoboit Harbour quickly and to Martinique Beach from there. On the way home from Martinique, duty and tradition demand a stop for clams and chips at Harbour Fish N Fries in Musquodoboit Harbour. The Bandwagon Food Truck across the street at the Musquodoboit Railway Museum serves up tasty treats, like fish tacos. Mmm fish tacos.

Clam Harbour One word: Spectacular! It’s a bit further away from the city along the Easter Shore than Martinique but it’s a scenic, fun drive that lets you stretch the legs of whatever vehicle you’re driving. Make sure to walk the length of the beach. At its westernmost end, depending on the tide, is a fastflowing shallow river that carries you effortlessly to the ocean. We came home from Clam Harbour feeling like we had had a true beach day.

82

Lawrencetown We got to Lawrencetown after a workday. If I surfed, what an activity to blow off steam and think of nothing else. Talk about being in the moment. Turns out, watching surfers is also therapeutic. The wind, the waves, the light - all helped with after-work decompression. Lawrencetown Beach is renowned among surfers the world over. Even in the icy, dark months, you’ll find die-hard surfers trying to catch a wave in full wetsuits. Wow! When you put them all together like this, what a selection of beaches in the Halifax-Dartmouth region. Nova Scotia is Canada’s Ocean Playground, after all. Even our license plates say so.

2022 Mitsubishi Mirage

Canada’s most fuel efficient non hybrid gas car and one of the most affordable comes into its own

Fuel efficiency, reliability, comfort and safety. These are the key ingredients that go into making a truly great subcompact car. But with its recent redesign, Mirage has brought class-defining style to that recipe too.

The entire front end of Mirage has been completely redesigned to proudly display the signature Mitsubishi Motors Dynamic Shield design. The revised design draws attention to the wideset headlamps, delivering a wider and more stable presence. The styling cues it creates sweep around the sides, toward the nose of the car in a protective embrace. Combined with the square grille lines and the available integrated fog lamps, the Mirage has a sharp and purposeful look.

84

Towards the rear of the car, a new, wider bumper has been crafted. Its lines echo the styling cues from up front, giving the Mirage a lower and wider stance that optimises the proportions of its hatchback design. This is further enhanced by the design of the new L-shaped (LED) tail lamps. Mirage also benefits from the available multispoke, 15” alloy wheels which, combined with the changes to its sheetmetal, bring a characteristic style that combines a sense of motion, protection and craftsmanship to Mirage that makes it unique in the subcompact class.

But Mirage is more than just stylish, it’s remarkably safe too. Mirage comes equipped with a wide array of safety features and technologies including seven airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), Hill Start Assist, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, Active Stability Control and Mitsubishi Motors’ patented Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) impact-absorbing safety cell technology. In the event of a collision, the RISE system’s energy-absorbing body structure helps to dissipate kinetic energy away from the driver and passengers. In addition to this, Mirage integrates available advanced semi-autonomous technologies in the form of Forward Collision Mitigation system (FCM) with Pedestrian Detection. This highly advanced system of cameras and laser-radar work in conjunction to detect both vehicles and pedestrians to prevent collisions or, in the case of something unavoidable, reduce the severity. Mirage also benefits from the latest generation of available Lane Departure Warning (LDW) technology. LDW uses an onboard camera to monitor lane positioning in front of the vehicle. If, for some reason or another, Mirage begins to unintentionally leave its lane, the system will audibly and visually alert the driver to ensure safe travel ensues. To further enhance safety but also provide occupants with utmost convenience, drivers and passengers will enjoy more refinement with new

fabrics and an available large 7” Smartphone-link Audio Display system. Thanks to its integration with available Apple CarPlay and Android AutoTM, Mirage will help ensure eyes are kept on the road. Mitsubishi Motors’ efficiency-first engineering philosophy is behind a weight management strategy that offers structural optimization and extensive use of high-tensile steel for the overall structure, resulting in low overall weight and excellent structural rigidity. While this philosophy has obvious safety benefits, like those found in Mitsubishi Motors’ RISE system, it also greatly enhances fuel efficiency by creating a strong, lightweight chassis that underpins an aerodynamic body design. The Mirage continues to utilise a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder DOHC engine featuring the latest version of Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) variable valve-timing system that maximizes fuel efficiency and power output while greatly minimizing exhaust emissions. That means this engine is extremely efficient. In fact, Mirage is the most fuel efficient gas-powered non-hybrid vehicle on the road in Canada, according to 2022 Natural Resources of Canada (NRCAN) Fuel Efficiency Ratings. It delivers a fuel economy of 6.6/5.6/6.2 city/highway/combined L/100 km when equipped with the optional Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Efficiency, reliability, comfort, safety and style. Mirage has it all plus a price that can’t be beat!

with Camille DG The Original Social Influencer

In the past few years, the term social influencer has become part of our everyday lexicon. But it seems as quickly as new media stars appear, they can disappear. Not so, for Camille DG, an original social ‘influencer’ in Quebec who has transitioned her early start in the social space to the independent content powerhouse Le Cahier. She has captured an audience who found inspiration in her active lifestyle, her fashion sense and energy. Now, with a newborn baby, a new 2022 Outlander and an appreciation for vehicle safety, Camille has traded in her jet-setting lifestyle for long road trips, without losing her thrill for adventure. Let’s catch up with new mom and content creator Camille DG, a Mitsubishi Motors brand ambassador.

Tell us about your start. LeCahier.com is one of the biggest independent websites in French in Canada. What was your journey like? Like many, I graduated from university and there weren’t many media jobs. I wanted to write about news and I wanted to travel and back in 2009 there really wasn’t a big social media world. So, I founded my own website. During the past 10 years, I’ve had a TV show, I became a TV host and VJ and founded a social media agency. Today, I’m proud to say that we have 75 writers working with us. How do you know that you were resonating with your audience? The moment I’ll never forget is we did one of the first get togethers with the readers, so I was expecting to maybe have twenty people attend. And I remember when I looked, there was a big crowd in downtown Montreal and there was a line-up going across the street. That was a big moment for me. When people say they have read you for 10 years or you’ve been in my life and now I have a baby; it’s those little things that make the difference. I still remember the month that we had our one millionth visitor, I was just screaming. Incredible! How is social media changing today? Well, we’re in a big, big switch at the moment with the metaverse and everything. Social media is becoming its own world where people sometimes develop a different personality.

So, there’s good and bad stuff at the same time going on. The bad stuff… I would say is with the algorithm, people are only reading and seeing things that comfort them and what they believe. So viewpoints are becoming really segmented. But the good thing is, with the pandemic, for a lot of people, it was a place where they could exchange ideas, talk and have that normal life. It’s changing a lot. When I see younger generations getting into social media, they want real life not a photoshopped version of life anymore. They want something they can relate to. Social media is switching to something that’s more normal and that’s a good thing. How has becoming a mother changed you? Are you now a mom influencer? Oh, my God, it’s changed so, so much. I mean, when you’re on social media and you’re talking about the things you wear or places you go, people, well, they tend to exchange a little bit. When you’re a mom, everything is like times 10 times, 20 times, even 50 times greater. It’s a community that is actively engaged where people really want to talk or really want to learn. I think it’s very important to not set the expectations so high and to speak the truth to moms. It’s not easy and it’s not perfect. One thing that has changed is that you now drive a car? You are driving Mitsubishi’s new flagship vehicle the 2022 Outlander. Yeah, I’ve never owned a vehicle before. When I got pregnant, I thought, well, I need a car.

For me, having Paul, I didn’t want it to slow down my life. It was getting into my head that I needed to do stuff. I was a little lost, to be honest, because when you have never had a car, you don’t exactly know what you want. But I started trying the cars of my friends and I was like, OK, first of all, the number one priority is safety. I want something that when I’m going to drive it, I know I’m going to feel safe driving it because I’m not an experienced driver, like someone that had a car since they were 16. So, I wanted something that I felt safe in and my baby would feel safe in. The night before I gave birth, we were on the Jacques Cartier Bridge and a car pulled out quickly in front of us and the Outlander stopped itself. At that moment, I thought this car makes a difference. We could have been in an accident on a bridge the day before Paul was born. I was also looking for enough space for all my gear because I’m a diver, so I have my diving gear. I’m a skier. I have my skiing gear. I love hiking. We love camping. Like this summer. We want to go to Sandbanks. I wanted something that has a lot of space and I can bring people in. I wanted something that would be a little higher on the road just because I’m really short and I know I feel more comfortable driving when I’m a little higher. I don’t know why, it’s maybe just a feeling, but it’s important. A vehicle that has a lot of technology features into it too. That may sound really stupid, but just to have a big screen and be able to see a map directly in the windshield (Head Up Display HUD), it’s all the little stuff that makes it so much easier when you’re driving.

Tell us about an adventures on the road. We’ve had so many adventures already, from diving two months after Paul was born and taking a long road trip with a newborn, to driving for scallops in New Brunswick. I sat in the back with Paul and it really was amazing to have these adventures with my boyfriend and Paul. Switching gears, it’s Mitsubishi Motors 20th anniversary in Canada this year. Do you have any advice as a social and content strategist? First congratulations! The path that Mitsubishi is taking with the Outlander is amazing. The new design and all the features have great appeal to a younger family. I think Mitsubishi is on a really good path and I hope it keeps going in this direction where many families can be adventurous with them. In the next 20 years, it’s important to be as ecological as possible. I’m excited about the plugin hybrid version of Outlander. Marc, my boyfriend, is especially excited to try it. Well thank you Camille, we look forward to following you on more adventures in the Outlander with your family. @camille_dg @bloglecahier

Service Tips And Advice Get Ready For Summer Driving

School will be out in a few weeks and families across the country will be taking longer trips in their vehicle. For most, a trip to a cottage or to see new sights will be a happy and enjoyable experience, but for some, vehicle problems on the road will interrupt travel plans or can even cancel them completely. Here are a few tips to help prevent vehicle problems during your travels.

forces put on them. This is especially true of front wheel drive vehicles. Uneven tire wear indicates the need for a wheel alignment, which increases tire life while improving fuel economy. If you see bands of solid rubber (tread wear indicator) going across the tread of the tire, then there is only 2 millimeters of tread remaining and the tires are due for replacement.

Checking tire pressures once every two weeks is often enough when near home, but if you are driving long distances, check them regularly. A tire that is low on pressure may have been damaged or picked up a nail. Often you can detect a problem

Next, check all the fluid levels. If there is coolant showing in the radiator overflow or surge tank, then the radiator should be full. Never remove a radiator cap while an engine is hot because the coolant may boil when the pressure is released

before the tire gets too low, about 17 PSI minimum. Then you can drive very slowly to a local repair shop rather than changing the tire on the side of the road. Be sure to check the spare tire pressure too. A flat spare is of no use to anyone.

causing serious burns to anybody nearby. Look at radiator and heater hoses for any spots that may have been rubbing and wearing against another part. This could cause the hose to burst suddenly. Most hoses fail at connections, so if they look cracked or have soft spots, have the hose replaced. Many of the vehicles that have problems on the road are due to overheating or loss of engine coolant. Consider having the cooling system flushed. It will increase the life span of cooling system parts and reduce the possibility of the engine overheating.

Keeping your tires at the recommended pressures will increase tread life and decrease rolling resistance of the tire for better fuel economy. Inspect the tire tread while you are checking the pressure. Tires should be worn evenly across the tread surface, but the outside edges of the front tires tend to wear faster due to steering 92

Engine oil should be checked regularly. Internal engine problems may not cause the engine to use much oil when driving around town but can cause oil to be used quickly when driving on the highway. If you are unfortunate enough to find yourself driving a vehicle that uses oil quickly, carry extra oil to keep it full. Check for leaks beneath the vehicle and have serious ones repaired. If the engine leaks one drop of oil every kilometer, the engine could run dangerously low on oil in less than a few hundred kilometers. If equipped with a dipstick, check the automatic transmission oil for particles or burnt odor several days before leaving on holidays. If you find any, take it to your service shop for further diagnosis. By removing the pan and filter, a transmission specialist can often diagnose future transmission problems by the amount and type of debris found. It is cheaper to get it fixed at home than on the road. Don’t forget other fluid levels such as the power steering, windshield washer, and brake fluid in the master cylinder. Low brake fluid levels may indicate a leak or worn brake pads. Don’t take a chance on your brakes. Some shops will do a free inspection. Any problems they find could save your life. If you inspect the brakes yourself, pay extra attention to the brake hose condition. Cracks or checks on the hose can indicate a potential brake hose failure. Don’t take chances – have them replaced. Have the brake fluid flushed too. It may not be in the owner’s manual but replacing brake fluid every two years will remove moisture from the brake system to improve braking performance and protect expensive brake system components. Pack an emergency travel kit as well. A flashlight, duct tape, flares or an emergency sign, some simple tools and additional clothing and water should be part of your travel kit. Packing one will ensure you will never need it! Finally, be sure to check your vehicle before you travel. Service departments get extra busy approaching summer travel season so plan ahead and enjoy your summer. 93

Last Word Mitsubishi Motors has a storied heritage developed over 100 years. It is a name that means many things to many people depending on where you live in the world. When you go to Japan, you’ll find yourself immersed in a world of hundreds of Mitsubishi Group companies from rockets to trains to air conditioners, hotels, the Bank of Tokyo and, of course, automobiles under the Mitsubishi Motors name. In some places around the world, we are in the top three automakers in the country. In Canada, we are a smaller automaker but growing larger every year. No matter our size, we bring a big heritage to all markets and a big commitment to quality and innovation. The soul of who we are is our brand promise, ‘Drive your Ambition’. It gives guidance to our company to dream bigger and go farther. It is this drive that pushed our team to first develop the PX33 in 1934, the first Japanese built sedan with full-time 4WD, which had evolved into Super All-Wheel Control, one of the best all-wheel drive systems in the world. Mitsubishi has pushed itself by conquering the toughest of Rally Races from Paris to Dakar with Montero/ Pajero, one of the first SUV styled vehicles, or introducing Lancer EVO, the stuff of childhood dreams or producing the first mass-produced electric vehicle in the world in the i-MiEV. The mindset to push forward culminates into Outlander PHEV, the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV, backed by 80+ years of 4WD and AWD heritage. Later this year, we’re launching our next generation vehicle and it promises to be next-generation in every way with a much larger battery, more power, more range and well more of more. Within these pages you also saw e-Evolution, a concept that embodies our brand. It’s where we see ourselves in philosophy where driving and autonomy is not about letting the vehicle selfdrive but utilizing artificial intelligence technology to drive with passion. So, as we plunge back into a new normal, where days of solitude make way for hybrid work and face to face interaction, we ask you to spend some time to Drive your Ambition and see the new world as we do. Until next time,

Steve Carter Director, Marketing Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada, Inc. 94
