As I write we’re halfway through two weeks of level 4 lockdown with a good chance, in Auckland at least, it may be extended. All of us at the Millwater Mag hope all of you are doing okay out there, whether you’re sequestered in your home or heading out to work in one of those essential roles that keep everything ticking over during these strange times. How has your perspective shifted since you began working in the industry? Far from being sleepy, quiet communities, retirement villages are an opportunity for a ‘second spring’ and village living can be a wonderful exploration of a whole raft of new experiences. What attracted you to The Botanic? I relocated from the Bay of Plenty to be a part of this amazing opportunity. What kind of community do you envision for The Botanic? Silverdale’s newest retirement village, The Botanic, is backed by talented professionals who genuinely care. Village manager Deborah Naysmith shares her perspective as The Botanic opens its doors.

How did you come to work in the care sector and why is it important to you? My introduction to the care sector was by way of a developing lifestyle retirement village in Papamoa, Bay of Plenty. I quickly learnt there is incredible friendship and fellowship that being part of a village brings to the lives of residents. The valuable care and service resonated deeply with me. It’s incredibly rewarding to make a difference in people’s lives, and I loved seeing our residents flourish.

What will the first few months look like? We have an opening celebration planned a few weeks after the first of our residents settle in. Then, as a tightknit community we’ll be looking to establish connections, share social time together and celebrate all the important milestones along the way. From first contact, the journey will be supportive, warm and welcoming. Understanding what is important to residents, who they are as a whole person and how they choose to live their lives is key.

For those who haven’t heard, Dad’s Pies café underwent a major refresh and relaunched the new look Baker’s Son Café at the start of 2020, with a new menu and improved indoor and outdoor seating and loads of parking. The Baker’s Son opens every weekday at 6am with freshly made muffins, scones, slices, sandwiches and hot and hearty savoury offerings ready to grab and go. If you have time to sit and soak up the atmosphere there’s an all-day menu offering bacon and eggs, burgers, mince on toast, omelettes, blackboard specials, salads and soup that changes daily.

The Saving Hope Foundation room. This is where you can help. Would you like to help foster puppies, adopt a puppy from them or even donate some goods to Saving Hope? To foster puppies, fill out the form on their website at https:// savinghope.co.nz. You’ll get a call to discuss the process and see how many puppies you can foster at once, with the recommendation usually being two or more puppies at a time. After the call, if you’re still keen to foster there’ll be a home check and then you’re all set to go! Fostering these puppies gives a real sense of achievement. I was able to help look after foster puppies (the gorgeous black and white dog in one of the photos) named Buddy and Buster and it was a truly amazing experience. The dogs are so cuddly, playful and definitely keep you busy, but it’s all worth it. If you’re interested in adopting, the process includes meeting the puppies at their foster homes and having a home check. Saving Hope doesn’t give people the puppies unless the prospective new owners have met the puppies and have had house checks. Then the fosterers choose who is the best fit for the dog.

This month I had the chance to meet with the wonderful team at Saving Hope. Saving Hope is a foundation that saves puppies at risk of being put down, from unsafe homes and those thrown out onto the streets. These puppies are then put into the care of a wonderful team of foster homes that look after the puppies until they find a forever home. Janine Hinton is one of the amazing ladies that put together Saving Hope. The idea for the foundation came when Janine’s daughter found a four-week-old pit-bull that was about to be euthanized at the vets because of her breed. Janine says ‘My daughter got the media involved and then the SPCA decided to save the puppy’. This is how Saving Hope came to be. Each year Saving Hope has been around helping puppies and dogs find new homes demand for their services has gone up. This year over 300 dogs were in their care. It got to the point they had to turn away puppies because they had no more

Saving Hope are also grateful to accept any form of donation. They are always in need of extra towels, blankets (especially the polar fleece ones), wet wipes, disinfectant, paper towels, bowls, dog food and crates. By March 2021, Saving Hope’s income was just over $500,000 and just over $474,000 went on vet bills, so they do run pretty tight. If you would like to donate money towards the foundation you can donate through their website – even if it’s just a dollar. ‘Every $1 counts and we are so grateful for it’. Sacked employees: is reinstatement an option? In a recent Employment Court case, Dr Humphrey was employed by Canterbury District Health Board. Complaints had been made to management about Dr Humphrey by other staff. An external investigator was appointed and while some of the complaints were substantiated, others were not. Crucially the report concluded the employment relationship was not irremediable. Despite the external report, the Board decided to dismiss Dr Humphrey for reasons that can generally be categorised as ‘incompatibility’. The Employment Court was not impressed. The Court found in favour of Dr Humphrey and ordered Dr Humphrey be immediately reinstated to his former position on an interim basis until the main court hearing took place at a later stage. Learnings from this case are as follows: • ‘Incompatibility’ is very rarely a legitimate ground for an employer to dismiss an employee; • the employer is required to shoulder significant responsibility for the employment relationship working (or not working, as the case may be); and • if the employee is willing and ready to move forward in the relationship constructively then, generally speaking, the employer is required to do the same. Generally speaking, if employers get things wrong they have to pay. For example, the owner of a mechanic workshop recently had to pay over $16,000 to a former employee because the owner did not follow the required legal process for redundancy. In New Zealand employers must follow the required legal processes to ensure the employer’s actions are lawful.

However, paying out an employer is not the only remedy available to employees who have been wronged by their employer. In 2018, reinstatement was reintroduced as the primary remedy to award if an employee has a personal grievance. Reinstatement requires an employer to reinstate the ex-employee back into their former position (or a similar position).

She could barely walk or talk because it used up her energy too much to do these activities. This woman, myself, was experiencing burnout.’ So begins local author Annamaria Garden’s invaluable book about burnout, based on her personal experience, her PhD research and consulting work with clients suffering burnout and clinical interviews with 20 people. It covers what burnout is and isn’t. Annamaria goes on to discuss how to get out of burnout and how to prevent it. Burnout and the Mobilisation of Energy is well researched and is written in an engaging and personable way, with many practical stories. This is a must-read for anyone suffering burnout or who feels they might be heading in that direction. I know I’m not the only one who lies awake on windy nights preceding rubbish collection, worrying about toppled bins and items of rubbish and recycling taking flight. It’s heartbreaking the morning after to see all the debris strewn around our neighbourhood and finding its way into our waterways. That’s why I wish it was mandatory to own the genius invention of the Safewaste latch, a magnificently simple cart lid securing system.

This elastomer clip easily straps onto wheelie bins and absorbs the shock-load if the bin is knocked over and keeps it closed. Its S-flex design then expands when the bin is inverted for emptying, allowing for auto release. When we see the term ‘superfood’ many of us assume they are more expensive, exclusive, exotic and more health promoting than other foods. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines superfood as ‘a food (such as salmon, broccoli, or blueberries) that is rich in compounds (such as antioxidants, fibre, or fatty acids) considered beneficial to a person’s health’. However, there is no scientific or legal definition and the word is mostly used as a marketing term to enhance consumer perception.

The idea of superfoods began in the early 20th century not by nutrition experts, but by the United Fruit company trying to sell more bananas by promoting their food value. This was reinforced by a study that showed a banana diet could treat conditions such as coeliac disease and diabetes, before it was discovered gluten was the culprit in coeliac disease.

Let’s talk about maths morning. From Year 7, when the students join the college, Maths is taught by specialist teachers who are passionate experts. Ask any Maths teacher at the college why they teach this subject and they look at you quizzically. ‘Because I love it,’ asserts Mrs Banyard, the head of Mathematics, who chose her career around her favourite subject. The lunchtime Mathematics Club, run by senior students, is popular and voluntary. Mrs Banyard also attends to extend those wanting harder work. After school, Wentworth runs a Maths tutoring programme that offers extra tuition to Years 7, 8 and 9 students. Distinguished Mathematics Professor Graeme Wake enjoys tutoring Wentworth’s top Maths students; they work on Olympiad questions together. Student David Zong was in Year 9 when he achieved 99% in IGCSE (Year 11) Mathematics. This year he has begun to study his A Level despite being in Year 10. Scientists have been discovering to their amazement, just how far some of these birds travel to their regular feeding grounds. Tawaki, the Fiordland crested penguin, for example, swims 8,000km to its feeding grounds twice a year after breeding in New Zealand waters. The July lunch outing of the Millwater ROWENAs (Retired Old Women Enjoying Nice Afternoons) was very local; 12 ladies met up at the House of Boulevard in Silverdale. The surroundings are very pleasant and the staff extremely polite and helpful. We had all pre-ordered our lunch and it was just a case of remembering on the day what you had ordered. There were a number of ladies who had ordered the fish and

chips. Whilst they were good, the overall consensus was that, for a fish and chip meal, we prefer salt water fish rather than the Vietnamese basa freshwater fish that was served on the day. The remainder of the ladies all enjoyed their meals. It was lovely to welcome Elizabeth back from her trip to Australia and hear about her experience having to spend two weeks in MIQ on her return.

Silverdale-Orewa Toastmasters Celebrating a very successful year communication and leadership award, particularly impressive as only about 1% of members worldwide gain this award. Another member was the most successful division director in our district, with a district of 22 clubs. Silverdale-Orewa Toastmasters club members are very diverse, with half our members being born overseas. Our president is just 26 years old and our members ranges in age from late teens to 65 plus. Anyone will fit into our cosmopolitan club. Toastmasters was founded back in 1924 and the founder wrote ‘We learn best in moments of enjoyment.’ Silverdale-Orewa club has this as one of our key principles. Our meetings generally have 3-4 prepared speeches from members and a session with 1-2 minutes impromptu speeches, with feedback from a member on grammar and word usage and a member also gives feedback to the speakers not on what they talked about, but how they presented their speech.

Most people join Toastmasters to becoming a more effective speaker and to build confidence for and through public speaking. We achieve this though our education system, which has eleven different paths and new members select the path which most appeals to them. There are awards recognising individual member’s achievements and last year our members received 11 educational awards. We are one of the 16,200 clubs making up Toastmasters International. The organisation has a quality management system focusing on clubs achieving the club mission. PROPERTY TALK with Grayson Furniss Franchise Owner Residential Specialist

So my original thinking when writing this month’s article was that the market was showing some excellent signs of kicking off again as we start to head into spring. The volume of sales has recovered on the basis of a few more properties listed over the last few weeks and some sales of slightly dated stock. Median prices were down slightly, but this has more to do with the mix of sales moving towards slightly smaller homes than an actual change in market pricing. Open home visitor numbers were healthy, with a high number of buyers willing and able to transact in the immediate future. All in all, things were looking decidedly normal and positive. Then we headed into an immediate seven days of level 4 lockdown with the potential for that lasting much longer. The one lesson we have learned repeatedly over the last 18 months is that the impacts of lockdowns are not always what we expect them to be. I was lucky enough to be in a briefing with the economist Tony Alexander the day before lockdown. His considered opinion was that, based on local and international evidence, we would most likely see a significant rebound in economic activity after any further lockdowns. We would support this as the most likely outcome for Millwater and Milldale property sales, with the expectation that there will be a catch-up of sales volumes needing to happen over the period after we return to normal. With Christmas and the summer holiday slowdown period rapidly approaching, we are expecting that there may need to be another frenzy of sales activity before this period. We do know a few things for certain. Level 4 means that nothing can really happen in terms of property sales. Most sale and purchase agreements for the last 12 months have included a clause that provides some certainty over how settlements are managed under the various COVID-19 alert levels. What is not provided for under those conditions is any allowance for the expiration of time between a property being declared unconditional and settling if there is a lockdown during that time. We know there are a number of buyers out there who have sold and not yet purchased and are now unable to view existing properties until we return to level 3. In the meantime, the settlement date for their existing property is still ticking over. We also know that many locals are waiting on progress of their new homes, with the timing of the marketing of their current properties managed around these dates. This is likely to mean a delay in those properties coming to market, worsening the shortage of options buyers are currently facing. So, once we return to level 3 and have some ability to conduct business, we expect we will see some buyers rushing to secure property amid a period where many would-be sellers are re-evaluating their timelines and potentially delaying selling. Basically more distressed demand and less supply. One of the few things we can do for locals over the coming days/weeks is talk and evaluate. We can perform virtual appraisals and discuss potential timelines and marketing options via phone or video chat. We would suggest with the compression of timelines likely caused by this change in alert levels, having these discussions sooner rather than later is worthwhile. We are talking to a lot of concerned buyers who are wanting to know what options are available, it may just be your place they are looking for.

In the past many outsiders used to describe Orewa as a sleepy seaside town north of Auckland, but now it is seen as a buzzing township and vibrant community. Being local, and perhaps a little biased, we really do have everything here that we need. From the multitude of cafes, awesome estuary cycle and walkway and the beach, to the huge amount of sport and leisure activities, all within a walk or short drive. I would encourage any new or existing residents with extra time on their hands to research the various options out there from the largest bowling club in NZ with its huge roof over the bowling green, to the friendliest bridge club around, according to my mum. So, what is happening with property? REINZ July data has Orewa medium sale price at $1,400,000 compared to $1,250,000 for June. At the time of writing there was only one two-bedroom unit (excluding apartments) for sale in Orewa. That is compared to 83 houses with three or more bedrooms. Currently, and pretty much since the beginning of 2020, we are in a sellers’ market. There is a lot of fear of buyers missing out, particularly with many houses continuing to sell within a short time frame. If you are considering selling, it is important to know the value of your home in the current market, have a good idea of where you plan to move to and know how much it is going to cost. Millwater ROMEOs The second Thursday of August found the Millwater ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) gathering at the new Wet & Forget office/factory/showroom in Emirali Road, Silverdale, where we are greeted by Rod Jenden in the car park. This massive construction was completed in February this year and is their new head office. After several minutes talking about some interesting cars parked there, Rod took the 13 of us into the premises to show us the production area and the warehouse. The production line for the Wet & Forget moss, mould and lichen remover was operating and the latest automatic techniques are incorporated. Did you know, for example, that the aluminium foil seal inside plastic bottles, such as milk bottles, is ‘welded’ in place by microwaves? Apart from supplying all of New Zealand with their innovative range of products, they also supply Australia and the UK. Furthermore, the USA is supplied from factories operating over there under control of Wet & Forget New Zealand.

We were then shown a video of the construction of the new building, which was very impressive. Amazingly, pouring the vast concrete floor took 40 hours, non-stop. Rod further entertained us with anecdotes from the journey he has made with the company. Unfortunately, we had to leave for our booking at the Beach House Eatery, where the ribs proved very popular. Later, afternoon coffee, cake and conversation were enjoyed by all at the organiser’s house. Altogether a most interesting and enjoyable day!

A brighter year for Bella Brazilian specialise in waxing. I really love treatments where you can see results straight away. In May 2020, after the big lockdown was over, Lainey Everett came on board. I was pregnant and she was going to cover for me while I was on maternity leave. The clients were so happy with Lainey. She is also very experienced with 17 years as a beauty therapist doing waxing for 10 years in London. Lainey also introduced a couple of new treatments to Bella Brazilian: dermaplaning and lash lifting. Both the treatments have been very popular.

A tough few months In June 2020, the unexpected happened. One week past my due date I went into labour and on arrival at the hospital no heartbeat could be found. Conor Micheal Kivits was delivered by caesarean on the 18th June, stillborn from cord compression. A tough few months followed for me and Mitchell, but with lots of love and support from family, friends and clients we have come into 2021 feeling much brighter. Lainey ran the business fabulously until I returned to work at the end of October. She then headed up north to start a new venture for a few months. In March Lainey returned and I was so excited to have her back working with me. She found it very easy jumping right back in to Bella Brazilian life.

The property itself is becoming a tradeable commodity rather than a capital item for generating cash flow. Along with a reduction of available rental properties the arrival of Kiwis from overseas is creating a perfect storm of housing demand. Now we have hotels leased by the Government for MIQ facilities, motels leased for emergency housing and rental properties enjoying soaring rents. There is either a shortage of houses or a surplus of people (or both). We need to build more housing units, faster than the supply is being absorbed by population growth and immigration. I believe putting the brakes on housing prices is desperately needed to allow the market to regain stability. The rental market will be secure only when short term capital gain becomes less attractive than rental cash flow.

Fishing Spot with Tim opportunity to take my son for a fish and then low and behold, a good mate realised the same opportunity so we both took the day off to go fishing with the boys. Having had an average day on the sliders the previous trip I was determined to have a bait and burley session this time around. We left Gulf Harbour around 8am and headed north to Kawau Island. On the way through we passed dolphins and gannets off Shakespear Regional Park. It was hard not to stop and throw a lure down, but this wasn’t the game plan. Always stick to your plan. Once we arrived at our spot, we deployed the burley pot and waited for the tide to change, bringing the wind and tide together and setting up a nice long burley trail down onto the reef. Over five hours the boys caught around 30 fish each including scores of small kingfish, which made the fishing much more exciting. Our next trip will be a mission out wide and probably overnight. Until then get out there and get into it. Tight lines!

Spring is here and you know what that means – time to fish! The Hauraki Gulf will jump into life as the daylight hours increase and the water warms up. Already we are seeing dolphins and gannets working the bait schools in and around Whangaparaoa Bay and further north. It won’t be long before the work ups become frequent and the fishing more consistent. September also brings the start of the scallop season, although the water will still be a little fresh for another month or two yet. You’ve got to be pretty keen to jump in the water at the moment. The wind hasn’t been playing ball for us over the last month, limiting opportunities to get out. Finding fishing buddies midweek is also proving a challenge. Last week there was a weather window but I couldn’t find a mate who could take the day off so I missed on the first day. Then I found out there was a teacher’s only day at school, which created a perfect

The July outing for the ladies was to the Puhoi Organic Distillery, owned and run by three members of the Kirichuk family, originally from the Ukraine. We arrived on a cold and damp Wednesday morning to be met by Victoria, who gave us a quick introduction outside. She informed us that the distillery is the only solar-powered distillery in New Zealand, with the solar panels sitting up on the roof of the distilling shed. The water they use is all drawn from an 8,000-year-old aquifer on the property. We then made a quick dash inside as the rain began falling again. Inside, Victoria told us a little of the history of how the family came to be in New Zealand. They arrived under the Professional Scheme, having to deposit money, prove they were healthy and pass an English test. Originally they lived in Rotorua, then they moved to Northcote and eventually, in 2003,

they bought the property in Puhoi. The father Alex, who is the master distiller, was originally a nuclear engineer in the Ukraine. The mother Iryna was a medical doctor and now specialises in the organics and herbs used to create their products. Victoria is their daughter. She spent nine years in the New Zealand Police force before joining the family business. She is now a qualified junior master distiller and a perfumier. They create over 80 products at the distillery and all of them are organic, with no chemicals, colourings or caramel. They are also the recognised supplier of gin and rum for the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. If you wish to try their dry gin or vodka just pay a visit to the Puhoi Pub right next door to the distillery. You can, of course, buy bottles at the distillery after your tasting.

Rooms are self-contained, have private outdoor areas and for the cooler months there is a fireplace. Each room also has an outdoor bathtub – the perfect place for stargazing. For larger groups there is the option of booking the lodge for exclusive use. Facilities at the lodge include a 20m outdoor pool that is nestled into bush and looks out to breathtaking views. There is also a hot cedar tub, pine wood infrared sauna and a gym and yoga studio.

There are plenty of activities close by including walks such as the Mangawhai Cliff Walk, beach bike riding, bird watching, surfing, fishing and golf (at close by Tara Iti Golf Course). Alternatively, if you just want to relax, a massage or facial can be organised back at the lodge. It was a fantastic event and

Purchasing property Why you should obtain your own LIM report Firstly, the LIM may be out of date if it was ordered when the property first went on the market. Having a current LIM is important so that you have the most recent information on the property. What if a resource consent for a major new road has just been approved or an area rezoned to allow high rise apartments to be built next door? This is likely to be information that you would want to know when deciding whether to go ahead with your purchase. Without obtaining an up-to-date LIM you would be unaware of this. Secondly, if you (or your lawyer) did not order the LIM yourselves, your recourse against the council, should there be discrepancies in the report, will be limited. For example, if you purchase a property relying on an agent’s LIM and then a few years later discover there are contamination issues with the land, you would want to be able to seek compensation from the council for their failure to disclose this relevant information. However, because you were not the person who ordered the LIM, your ability to seek that compensation is likely to be limited. It is for these reasons we recommend purchasers obtain their own LIMs when completing their due diligence on a property. A couple of hundred dollars now could save you a much greater cost in the future. When purchasing property, a key document that potential purchasers should review is a Land Information Memorandum (LIM). LIMs are important as they provide valuable information about the property such as its zoning, whether code compliance certificates have been obtained and whether there are any hazards you should be made aware of prior to purchasing. Purchasers will often find that agents/vendors provide a LIM as part of the property information pack. With LIMs costing anywhere between $200-$400, we can understand why relying on the vendor’s LIM may seem like a good way to save costs. However, there are two key issues with not obtaining your own LIM.

Personal insurance policy ownership and why enduring powers of attorney are important Enduring powers of attorney For this reason, it is important to have enduring powers of attorney (EPA) in place, with respect to your (i) property and (ii) personal care and welfare. This will give you peace of mind that your assets and personal welfare will be properly managed on a temporary or permanent basis by someone you trust if you become unable to do so. People tend to think only the elderly are likely to need someone to manage their affairs, but anyone can become mentally incapable at any age. An accident or illness may be the prompt for needing an EPA. And, as an EPA needs to be created when one is still mentally capable, it makes sense to do it as soon as possible.

How do I create an enduring power of attorney? Last month we highlighted the importance of having the right policy ownership structure for your personal insurances, the most common ones being sole or joint policy ownership. Policy ownership means that the policy owner(s) is able to make any changes that may be required or to lodge a claim.

You can set up an enduring power of attorney through a lawyer or trustee corporation. There are options available to set these up online but it pays to seek professional advice so you are sure everything is correctly in place. This will give you peace of mind, knowing any decisions about your property or personal care are being made in your best interests or that your loved ones will be looked after should you pass away.

Policy administration One important consideration is that any administrative matters relating to the policy will be able to take place only with the agreement and signatures of the policy owner(s). While one is healthy, this will not present any problems. However, in a situation of a terminal illness, trauma or in the event of one being so mentally or physically incapacitated as to be unable to sign a claim form (such as being in a coma), the only option is to go through the courts to facilitate the claim. This means the money is not available when most needed and it can create unnecessary issues and stress for the family.

Local Asian Corner Father’s Day Happy Father’s Day to every dad and grandfather out there. A few months back I shared some stories of my belated grandmothers, now is a great time to celebrate the life of my grandfathers.

Passing away in Hawaii eight years ago, my maternal Grandpa Kwong was probably the most gentle and caring person I have ever known, at least he was after retiring from running a construction material supplying company and becoming my grandpa. He suffered much from the war and had some hard days living in fright and uncertainty, with very limited food and resources and he even lost his sibling. I still remember the way he talked about it. There were no brightness in his eye although there was always a tear holding back inside. Despite the hard life he has encountered, he had a positive and optimistic personality. He was the one who would walk me to kindy, carry me back when I was sick and buy me an afternoon snack from the bakery. Even when he was living in America, when we first arrived in New Zealand, he flew all the way to stay with us for months to help us settle in. I proudly have one thing in common with him: we both always seemed to bang our elbow into a wall or kick our little toe on a door. Every time I have this kind of little accident I will think of him. My paternal grandfather Ping is much of an opposite to Kwong. Sharp eyes, clear mind and rotund voice, he is now close to 100 years old and still living a great life. Being a businessman for his whole life, he never stopped learning. He learnt to speak many languages in order to close business deals; French, English, Thai, Vietnamese, some Chinese dialects and, of course, his mother tongues of Cantonese and Mandarin. When he was shipping goods from France to Hong Kong he always made sure there were loads of snacks and treats for us. He was the one who introduced me to wine at a very early age. ‘Drink in the French way,’ he said. Always keeping up with new

Central’s Tips September 2021

The growing season has started – control aphids, feed citrus and berry plants and stake fruit trees. There’s a great variety of vegetable seedlings available now, and it’s a good time to sow pumpkins. Weed control now will reward you in a few months by giving desirable plants plenty of room to grow. Plant spring flowering shrubs, adding water storage granules. Stake tall growing perennial plants so they don’t fall over in spring winds.

• Check for aphids on young seedlings, particularly

• Seedlings of old-fashioned tomatoes, capsicum and

other summer crops are available at garden stalls at farmers’ markets now. Plant directly into Garden Mix in a sheltered area, placing tender young seedlings under cloches (cut off plastic drink bottles will do)

• Get the leafy herbs cranking: coriander and parsley are

best planted before it gets too warm – but basil is much more susceptible to cold, so wait a month or so

• Liquid feed all edible plants with Aquaticus Garden Booster, particularly at the root area as everything begins to grow

and allowing desirable plants to thrive. It’s tricky spraying amongst plants that you want to grow, so choose a sunny day and pop the headphones on and get digging!

• Many shrubs and annuals can be planted now.

Plant into weed-free Garden Mix and liquid feed straight after planting. Larger shrubs and trees in exposed areas need to be staked

• Pretty spring-flowering shrubs enhance the seasonal

change. Californian lilac (ceanothus), Mexican orange blossom (choisya), viburnums and lavender all provide good early spring displays

• Place stakes alongside tall growing perennials such

as delphiniums, heleniums, salvias, phlox etc. These plants grow quickly and new growth can be soft, so they need anchoring

• Water-wise: use Aqua Turf Max granules in the planting holes to enable plants to maximise use of water, as it gets hotter

• Feeding garden trees, shrubs and roses is best done

now. Roses, which use a lot of food to produce their beautiful blooms, will benefit from both rose fertiliser and a dressing of sheep pellets

Induction or gas for your household cooktop? I find one of the main disadvantages is that it’s easy to accidently turn up or turn on an unwanted element by accidently touching the controls. I have burnt several pots this way. This could be due to the model I chose, which has individual controls for each cooking zone. I also find if I have all the elements working together the efficiency can slightly drop. I also use smoking as a method of cookery to cook things such as salmon and it is harder to generate the heat required due to the flat surface required to cook on induction. I find gas is instant and very responsive to turning up and down and is harder to set to the wrong temperature by accident. But I find the cooktops are harder to keep clean and tend to scratch easily. There is also the situation of when you are using very low heats that they blow out. I really enjoy cooking on both. We are presently building a new home, so this kitchen will have half induction and half gas as they complement each other and then I can get the best out of each hob. Whether it’s gas or induction, remember the hob is only as good as the user!

As a professional chef I have used gas all my career for stovetop cooking. Most professional kitchen ovens under the stove top are gas but when we use combi ovens, such as Turbofan (Moffat) or Rational, they are electric.

In my home kitchen, which is council certified as I cook there professionally for my catering business, I have a 900mm induction cooktop and three electric in-wall ovens. This is the first time I’ve had an induction cooktop and it definitely has its pros and cons. Induction is very quick and precise and for methods of cookery such as boiling, poaching and stewing it is great. The main advantage is the ease of cleaning as there are no nooks and crannies to clean around. It also doesn’t get anywhere near as hot on the elements and surrounds as gas, so is a lot safer due to the lower risk of burns.

Parents should decide when it’s bedtime Firm: Bedtime is not a time for negotiation but be aware that you will be invited into one. Your kind and firm manner says, ‘Goodnight my love, have a lovely sleep.’ Try not to swerve off this one. Calm: This is not easy, but calmness is very settling for a child. Toddlers are looking to you for reassurance that they’re not too hard to handle. Your calm tells your child that you’re okay and so are they. You’ll also need to try and stay away from these three things: Threats: This might sound familiar – ‘If you don’t stay in your bed, I am going to take away your snuggly.’ ‘I mean it this time – you’ve had your last warning! Okay, you are not going to Nana’s tomorrow.’ Threats add tension, anxiety and uncertainty into the mix. Some children will comply, but it will be a short-term solution.

As parents, it’s our job to decide when it’s bedtime. This is not a task we should outsource to a toddler. We often wait for tired signs or ask our children if they’re ready for bed, but this may mean we end up waiting too long – and getting an overtired child to settle and sleep is a much trickier proposition. Try setting up a consistent bedtime routine. Children love the security of predictability. Type up a little plan to use as your reference guide. You could even make a rocket chart for your child with a countdown to bedtime, like the example below. 5 = Dinner time 4 = Bath or shower time 3 = Teeth time 2 = Story time 1 = Cuddles, prayers and goodnight Your manner will help too. Try to stay KFC: Kind: Try to keep anger and emotion out of your voice – huffing and puffing will definitely work against you.

Too much praise: It’s tempting to reward something that’s done well but children also sniff out the control that often comes embedded in praise. Limit your praise to a simple, ‘You had a good night’s sleep last night. Your body loves all that sleep.’ This helps keep sleep in the everyday expectation that it will happen. It’s not special or praiseworthy – it’s part of a healthy life. Lots of talk about sleep: Parents may not realise that lots of reference to sleep (the lack of it or the antics described in detail) makes bedtime very interesting and all the talk about it confirms how challenging parents are finding it. Getting into a good sleep rhythm takes time, patience and gentleness. Your child may be used to a little dance around bedtime so brace yourself for repeat performances for a while. If they get up, gently and patiently walk them back to bed – no talk, threats or bribes. Let your child hear your kind words – ‘Goodnight my love, see you in the morning.’ It might help to note the number of times you have to take them back. The first night might be 38 times, the second 33 and the third 15. Slow and steady is the way to go. The Parenting Place

Local Recipes Cheesy vegetarian savoury muffins Makes 8 large

Ingredients 2 ½ cups of white standard flour 1 ½ tsp Vegeta stock (or other vegetable stock powder) 1 ½ Tbsp baking powder 1 tsp dried mixed herbs 1 ½ small diced medium ripe tomatoes 2 x thinly sliced spring onions 180g crumbed Danish/Greek feta 90g grated mozzarella, cheddar or colby cheese 80g shredded baby spinach (chiffonade) 150ml sunflower oil or similar 400ml milk Grated cheese and pumpkin seeds (for the top)

Method Mix the flour, baking powder, Vegeta and mixed herbs together in a large bowl until well combined. Add the feta, grated cheese, sliced spring onions, chopped tomatoes and shredded baby spinach and mix well. Add the milk and oil all at once and gently mix until well combined. Don’t overmix as this will make the muffins stodgy and dense. The mixture should have a thick dropping consistency. Place into a well sprayed/oiled muffin tin (8 large or 12 medium). Place a sprinkle of cheese and/or pumpkin seeds on each muffin. Bake in a preheated 180C oven on fan-forced for around 40 minutes for large and 30 minutes for medium. You may need to release with a knife around the edge of the mould if they stick due to the melted cheese. Be gentle and patient when removing them. Keep in an airtight container in the pantry for up to two days. To serve, warm slightly in the microwave. To make these savoury muffins vegan, just use soy milk and vegan cheese.

Cheats chocolate caramel slice Ingredients

Method

Base:

180g butter

Preheat oven to 180C.

90g sugar

Cream butter, sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Gently mix in the flour. Press into lined sponge roll tin. Bake at 180C for about 15 minutes or until it is lightly golden.

1 ½ cups flour 1 tsp vanilla Topping: 60g butter 1 Tbsp golden syrup ½ tin condensed milk

Topping: Chop chocolate into small pieces. Set aside. Melt the butter, golden syrup, condensed milk and salt together in a saucepan over medium heat (you may need to use a whisk to emulsify the mixture). Continue stirring and cooking until the caramel mixture turns golden. Take care not to let the mixture burn or get too hot as it will separate. Leave the mixture to cool until it is cold (warm will do if you can’t wait).

Pinch of salt

Pour the cooled mixture over the partially cooked base. Place the entire thing in the oven at 180C for 30 minutes.

125g 50% chocolate

Once the slice has finished cooking, sprinkle over chopped up chocolate and use a spatula to get an even coating on top. Leave to cool and cut into desired size pieces. Katie Graham

Separation and relationship property agreements If you’re going through a separation, hang in there! And get a good lawyer. Whether it’s the end of a marriage or de facto relationship, expert legal advice is essential to ensure you know your rights and protect your interests. In New Zealand, if you have been married or living in a de facto relationship for at least three years, then pursuant to the Property (Relationships) Act 1976, unless extraordinary circumstances make equal sharing repugnant to justice, there is a presumption that all relationship property (and debt) will be divided equally. If it can be shown that equal sharing is ‘repugnant to justice’ then property may be divided according to the contribution each partner had made to the relationship (being financial and non-financial). It’s worth noting there is no presumption that a financial contribution is of greater value than a contribution of a non-monetary nature, such as maintaining the household or raising children. Negotiating the division of relationship property (and debt) can be daunting, but a formal separation agreement, prepared by your lawyer in accordance with the Act, draws a line in the sand in full and final settlement, so you can move on with your life. Following full disclosure of all assets to each other, the separation agreement will deal with division of assets including (by way of example) the family home, KiwiSaver, superannuation, the family trust, chattels, vehicles, shares, investment property and the business. Before the agreement is signed the other party must take independent legal advice, which means both parties will need a lawyer.
