Out to Lunch at Okahu Bay

outtolunch Okahu Bay

True Food and Yoga is a brand-new restaurant and wellness centre that had been open for a little over two weeks when we visited for lunch at the beginning of last month. Husband and wife owners Nic and Kelly Watt have cleverly converted the old Hammerheads at 19 Tamaki Drive in Okahu Bay into a very stylish and modern all-day restaurant and an adjoining wellness centre.

Nic had been chef some time ago at Hammerheads before leaving to work in Michelin-starred restaurants in London and then returning to open Auckland’s Metro Top 50 restaurant MASU by

Nic Watt before opening True Food and Yoga, which enjoys unobstructed ocean views over the Hauraki Gulf and Rangitoto. Considering that it was a Monday when we called in for lunch, the restaurant was pleasantly busy and obviously already popular with some of the varied clientele.

The menu designed by Nic and Kelly is exemplary and it was difficult to decide which of the organic, locally-sourced dishes we would have. In the end, I chose the medium-sized Bones to Broth, which presented chicken broth, kombu seaweed, pulled chicken & egg, edamame, shiitake & puha (gluten-, dairy- and nut-free). Management decided on the Lean Green, which comprised turkey, courgette, cumin patti with smoked eggplant & grapefruit labne (gluten-free). Both dishes cleverly combined a delightfully clean eating experience, with the Art of Copper cutlery adding just the right touch of luxury.

The thoughtfully constructed, internationally-inspired drinks list is equally involving and, again, focuses on the organic – all chosen by Nic and Kelly to complement the dining experience. I chose and was delighted by the Thierry Germain Domaines des Roches Neuves Cabernet Franc, with Management being equally impressed with the Central Otago 2015 Maude Pinot Gris.

This is a truly great restaurant that will draw us back, again and again. Highly recommended for its innovative and top-quality dining experience. Check it out at truefoodandyoga.co.nz/
