Tucked away in an anonymous warehouse unit in the heart of industrial Silverdale is one of the area’s best-kept secrets – the Laughing Bones Brewery. It was there that 10 ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) went on a recent Thursday to learn about the brewing methods of American John Morawski, who currently runs the successful business as a one-man band. As a brewer with a Master’s degree in Food Science behind him and 30 years’ home brewing and commercial ventures all over the world, he is more than qualified to produce the award-winning and often quirkilynamed beers his brand is known for.

The first question for John was the derivation of the brewery’s name. Laughing Bones is a southern US states’ term for gambling dice, which were made of bone, and John took the term from a Grateful Dead lyric in the song Candyman. In his recently commissioned taproom, the ROMEOs enjoyed samples of Element 5, The Duke, Jokers Wild, Lazy Bones, Anchors Aweigh and Shake Your Mangoes, which are the current six brews John is selling. His eminently quaffable beers are usually American-style with a Kiwi twist, though there are European influences in some of his brews too. The public can buy them at Orewa Liquorland, Faro Fresh outlets and the Fine Wine Delivery Company, or by visiting the brewery at 32D Forge Road.

After an informative and thoroughly-appreciated tasting session, the ROMEOs went on to the Wade for an excellent lunch before returning to the organiser’s home for coffee, cake and more conversation.
