Keeping our Pets Safe this Guy Fawkes

This time of year can cause many troubles for us as pet owners, with Guy Fawkes rapidly approaching, and it’s never just one night to get through with many people keeping some for birthdays, Christmas and New Years. If your pet gets worried with all the loud bangs, whizzes, pops and screeches, then try these things to alleviate their anxiety:

Walk your dog earlier in the evening, so that you are home well before dusk, and bring your cat inside in plenty of time.

Make a den for your dog or cat, a cardboard box with a blanket inside is usually sufficient. If your dog normally has a crate, then cover it with large blankets.

Turn some music on so there is a constant sound inside.

Pull the curtains so they can’t see anything.

If your pet is still unsettled, pop in and talk to us about other options. Products like Feliway for cats and Adaptil for dogs are extremely helpful for stress and anxiety, and are available without prescription from us. There is also a great deal on these products in store now.

There are medical options we can try but we need to examine your pet first, so try all the easy stuff first; but as always, we are here to help you and your pets, so pop in and discuss your concerns with us and together we can find a solution that works for everyone.

Have you heard about ‘affordable housing’ in Auckland? It really does exist!

There has been a lot of talk in recent times about the Government KiwiBuild initiative designed to help first home buyers get onto the property ladder.

The first KiwiBuild homes are situated in Papakura and Onehunga. Prices range from $380,000 for a studio apartment to $650,000 for a 4-bedroom home.

The KiwiBuild initiative is not the only affordable housing initiative in Auckland. Many first homes buyers have already benefitted from buying an Axis Series home at Hobsonville Point (prices of which range from $450,000 to $650,000).

These affordable housing initiatives have criteria that applicants must meet in order to be eligible. Criteria include (but are not limited to):

•You must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident

•You must be a first home buyer or in the same financial position as a first home buyer (as deemed by Housing New Zealand)

•If you are looking at an Axis Series home you must have a gross household income no higher than $85,000 in the last 12 months for a single purchaser or no more than $130,000 in the last 12 months where there is more than one purchaser, and you must agree to live in the property for a minimum of two years

•If you are looking at a KiwiBuild home, you must have a gross household income no higher than $120,000pa for a single purchaser or no more than $180,000pa where there is more than one purchaser, and you must intend to live in the property for at least three years.

Applicants will also need to have pre-approved finance before they can enter into a ballot (from where successful applicants are drawn).

We are well equipped to help with pre-approval of finance for such initiatives. We offer FREE personalised advice specific to your circumstances and the home you wish to purchase.
