Signs of dental disease: Dental health is a very important part of your pet’s overall health and dental problems can cause, or be caused by, other health problems. Your pet’s teeth and gums should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian, to check for early signs of a problem and to keep your pet’s mouth healthy.

The most effective way to look after your dog’s/cat’s teeth is to brush them. Of course, your pet may be reluctant at first to having their teeth brushed. It normally takes about 5-6 weeks for them to get used to brushing, but it’s worth it in the long run.

If the tooth brushing ends in blood, sweat, or tears, there are still choices you can make to help improve your pet’s oral health. Crunchy kibble is better than soft food, as soft food is more likely to stick to the teeth and cause decay. Special dental foods such as Hills T/D are designed to clean the tooth surface and fight bacteria-laden plaque. Dental chews and toys, and drinking water additives such as Prozyme will also help.
