Editor’s Note Jumper days and slipper nights
are upon us and the white
wines of barbeques and bonfires have been cast aside to make way for their more hearty and robust red relations. Winter has well and truly settled in. As I squelched and stomped across to the sideline of my son’s football field in a biting wind last weekend I compiled a mental ‘winter sideline survival’ shopping list: gumboots, fingerless gloves and a collapsible keep cup – do they even exist? When the sun diminishes and takes with it our natural dose of vitamin D, we can all feel a bit glum and dream of hibernating indoors. To help combat any winter woes, we have several articles in this issue focussed on physical and mental wellbeing.

New clinic and online courses with local massage therapist Gabriel recently acquired new clinic rooms in Orewa where he works two days a week. His signature massages are deep tissue, sports massage and Thai yoga massage. He works to restore energy and balance to the body, detoxing the muscles, relieving pain and improving circulation, range of motion and general wellbeing. He says that, ‘Helping a rehab patient walk unaided after a few sessions – there’s nothing better than facilitating that kind of magic.’ Gabriel believes massage therapists should hold certificates from proper schools and have many hours of training, but says anyone can massage family and friends – we all have magic and healing in our hands. He compares the difference to driving: not everyone wants to be a professional driver, but most people want to drive. To share the many benefits of massage more widely, Gabriel is creating online Thai Yoga Massage courses, similar to the successful workshops he has run since 2016 in New Zealand and overseas. The courses introduce the philosophy, history, protocols and practical positions of Thai massage, which uses weight and many parts of the body, such as elbows and knees to massage, rather than just hands. As a young boy in Brazil, Gabriel Morales massaged his father to help him with poor circulation. In 2004 he came to New Zealand, sponsored by The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Rotorua (now QE Health) to train and work as a massage therapist.
The online courses will be available by the end of the month and will eventually be accessible to people all around the world. Initially there will be three short courses available in three languages: English, Portuguese and Spanish, and they will be very affordable.
He spent 15 years in Rotorua gaining incredible experience in many forms of spa therapies, including balneotherapy. For six years he worked alongside doctors, nurses and physios treating patients with chronic diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis, giving well over three thousand massages. He then worked for many spas in Rotorua, treating local and international tourists.
Gabriel says some believe they have to go to Thailand to learn Thai massage but this is not necessary. It can happen anywhere – even online.
A few years ago, Gabriel moved to Auckland. He’d resisted moving to a crowded city but soon discovered Orewa, learned what it is to be a ‘Coastie’ and is happy here.

Vet Speak Reducing Stress for Cats There are some great products available and things you can do to help take the edge off stressful situations for them. Changing things at home, such as having multiple areas for them to hide, different levels they can climb to (especially high up places), multiple litter trays and separating their food and water bowls can help with their stress levels, especially in multi-cat households. Feliway is a great addition to any feline household. It’s a product that replicates a pheromone cats release when they are calm and content, and it can be effective in helping to settle cats. It comes as a plug-in diffuser, spray and built into scratch posts, so there are lots of options available for what you need and when. There are calming supplements and foods for cats that can make a lot of difference, such as Calmex and Royal Canin Calm, available from the clinic. These have factors built into them to settle nerves and help during moves, fireworks nights or with anxiety in general.
Cats are independent creatures, but they tend to not like change much and can get stressed without showing any outward signs of a problem. Some, however, can develop urinary, grooming or behavioural issues if they are feeling overwhelmed. Subtle changes including hiding, scratching or chatting more, a change of appetite or toileting accidents can all be signs of stress. Circumstances such as moving house, new pets, new people in the house and other animals outside can all make our pets feel on edge and nervous.
If these don’t work we are always happy to advise and discuss other solutions. Cats can go on antianxiety medication if they don’t settle with other options. Please feel free to pop in or call anytime if you want to discuss things more or you are expecting a change.

The hopeful voice of Genevieve Mora in New Zealand and that more change has to come from the government. She thinks we have come a long way but we also still have a heck of a long way to go. One of the biggest steps she feels New Zealand can take to stop stigmatising mental health is to talk, talk again and talk some more, because many people have struggled or know someone who has or is struggling with mental health. We have at least begun talking about it more, which is a good start. With this in mind, Genevieve combined her passion for video and media content with her passion for helping people and began interviewing other mental health survivors about their experiences. She quickly realised how powerful the voice of a lived experience is.
About a month ago I was lucky enough to speak with Voices of Hope co-founder, Genevieve Mora. I was amazed by Genevieve’s story and wanted to share it with our local community. Voices Of Hope was founded in 2014 by Genevieve Mora and Jazz Thornton, both survivors of mental health struggles. They’ve used their experiences to create a space for people who struggle with mental health to feel they aren’t alone and to help provoke change. Voices Of Hope ‘aims to create and implement change for mental health whilst providing hope through the voices of those with lived experiences’. Having spent many of her teenage years struggling with mental health, creating Voices Of Hope was personal for Genevieve. ‘Voices of Hope is something we wished we’d had when we were unwell. It’s somewhere people can turn to, to feel inspired, hopeful and empowered – that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and you can live a good life again.’ Genevieve believes there’s still a stigma behind mental health
I asked Genevieve, throughout her experiences, what was one piece of advice or a motto that stuck with her? When she was first admitted to hospital with an eating disorder, her mum stuck a quote across from her bed that read, ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.’ How true this is. Before you can conquer freedom from mental illness, you have to take that first step. Genevieve says, ‘That one made me realise that recovery can seem very daunting, like such a long road, so it’s about breaking it up into small pieces and taking that next step to get you closer to freedom.’ Support from trusted family and friends is also helpful in the journey to recovery. Genevieve vividly remembers her mum saying to her, ‘We’re not going to let this kill you, we’re not going to let this eating disorder take away our daughter.’ She says support from people closest to you gives you hope about getting better. Genevieve is only 26 years old and has already achieved so much. Her new book My Journey Starts Here, written with Voices of Hope co-founder Jazz Thornton, is a guided journal through mental health. She’s also developed an app for those dealing with eating disorders called Love you kite. These are just some of the ways her voice is helping to create hope. Daniella Taylor Features Contributor

Employment Law Changes Bereavement leave extended for employees Until recently, pregnant employees were not entitled to bereavement leave if they suffered a miscarriage or stillbirth. The Employment Relations Act 2000 has now been amended so an employee is entitled to take up to three days paid bereavement leave if they or their partner experience a miscarriage or stillbirth. People planning to have a baby through surrogacy or adoption are also eligible. Again, all employment documentation should be updated to reflect this change. Minimum wage increased From 1 April 2021, the adult minimum wage increased from $18.90 per hour to $20 per hour. If employees are paid a high proportion of their remuneration by way of commission, it is important to ensure that minimum wage entitlements continue to be met. Mandatory accreditation for employers of migrant workers
The last 12 months has seen significant upheaval to employment laws in New Zealand. Here are bite-sized outlines of the changes to employment law, to help you understand the new landscape. New privacy act The new Privacy Act 2020 came into force in New Zealand on 1 December 2020. The privacy changes affect all employers and any organisation that gathers customers’ details for any reason, such as newsletter databases, payment purposes, repeat bookings or loyalty programmes. Particular changes for employers are that HR material (such as notes from performance appraisals) may have to be disclosed to employees, employers must appoint a privacy officer and mandatory notification is now a requirement. All employers should ensure their employment agreements and staff handbooks have been updated to reflect the changes.
From 1 November 2021, all employers who hire migrant workers on the new Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) must be accredited employers. This requirement will replace the previous scheme where accreditation was not mandatory. To become accredited, an employer must (among other things) ensure that all employment operational practices are robust and all employment agreements and staff handbooks are up to date. Government parental leave payments extended From 1 July 2020, government funded parental leave payments extended from 22 weeks to 26 weeks. This payment comes directly from the government to the employee. For further information about any of the above law changes, contact our employment team.

Millwater Books of the Month Folded by Tina Clough
The King’s Nightingale by Sherryl Jordan
The latest thrilling instalment in the Hunter Grant series once again features the unforgettable couple Hunter and Dao. They are a formidable team, with her keen intellect and uncanny observational skills and his combat and surveillance experience. It all starts with Grace, a quiet, reserved woman finding notes folded into origami notes outside a city apartment building, the author of the notes in desperate trouble. Or are the notes a scam? Grace shares the notes with a work colleague, Linda, but then Grace abruptly resigns and disappears, and Linda worries that there has been foul play. Linda approaches Hunter and Dao and they reluctantly agree to help find the missing woman – even though this will put both their lives in grave danger. Like the other books in the series, each can be read as a standalone, but if you read all three books in order, you will be rewarded with the growing relationship between Hunter and Dao, a compelling part of these engaging books. Folded will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page!
Lightpool Publishing, RRP $35.00 This novel opens with Elowen and her younger brother being brutally seized by pirates from their peaceful village and suffering a terrible voyage that many others don’t survive. Weak and scared, they finally arrive in a distant land and are sold separately in the slave market. Elowen is given the title of the King’s Nightingale, after the Sultan hears her beautiful singing voice. Elowen lives a life of luxury, but she is determined to escape and rescue her brother and return home. But just when she thinks she is on the way to achieving her goal, she offends the king and is sold into ruthless enemy hands… The King’s Nightingale has it all – a feisty young heroine attempting to overcome terrible danger and injustice, sultans and sumptuous palaces, and a story about standing up against oppression, learning loyalty and finding love. If you have caught the fish yourself then you know its origins, and there is a fabulous website called justkai.org.nz that will tell you which purchased products are free of slavery and child labour. Beef is still the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, due to its on-farm stage of production involving methane gases and nitrous oxide, so with that reasoning, beef should be avoided more than any other food type. Studies have shown that eating a more plant-based diet results in lower emissions, better population health and reduced healthcare costs.

The New Zealand food emissions database: comparing the climate impact of commonly consumed food items in New Zealand. DREW ET AL., 2020
There’s been a lot of talk recently in response to the Netflix documentary Seaspiracy, which covers sustainability dilemmas in the fishing industry. There are valid arguments that the statistics and data are over-simplified to the point of inaccuracy. However, if your research is anything like mine, you’d be hard pressed not to find articles or YouTube clips that, in their attempt to debunk the documentary, just fixate on a few discrepancies and have

Mortgage Matters Getting a home loan when you’re self employed application approved without any hiccups is to work on building a strong credit file. The best way to do this is by paying down any credit cards or outstanding debts, and making sure you pay your bills on time. Some lenders will consider borrowers with an imperfect credit history, but a good credit history can help selfemployed borrowers get their loan across the line. Talk to your accountant
Becoming your own boss is the dream of many Kiwis, but some self-employed borrowers may find it harder to get a home loan. Thankfully, there are flexible lenders who can support you to find the right loan for your individual needs. And, with the help of an experienced mortgage adviser who can guide you through the steps below, securing a home loan could be smooth sailing. Evidence of income First, you’ll need to provide evidence of your earnings. Traditionally, lenders have required at least two years of personal
and business tax returns to confirm a borrower’s income, but some may accept alternative documentation. While this differs between lenders, documents like bank statements, business activity statements or an accountant’s declaration can help. This information helps the lender determine whether you can comfortably afford to make your regular loan repayments. Improve your credit file Another way to help get your loan
If you regularly see an accountant to support you with your business finances, it’s a good idea to seek their support, as they would have a great understanding of your business performance. Contact me to find out more about flexible lending options suited to self-employed borrowers.

Exercise – a key to quality of life as we age? • under 5 years, limit sitting time and encourage regular active play • 5 to 17 years, at least one hour a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity, with movement that strengthens bones and muscles to facilitate growth • 17 to 65 years, at least 30 mins moderate intensity movement or 15 mins of high intensity movement five days a week (include muscle strengthening at least two days per week and avoid sitting for long periods) • over 65’s, as above, along with balance and flexibility activities three times a week.
How to get started
The World Health Organisation defines physical activity as ‘any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure’. The Ministry of Health says ‘physical activity can help people live longer, healthier lives’. Movement has powerful health benefits. Being regularly physically active is about so much more than just assisting with weight loss or weight management.
Why do we exercise? What are the benefits? We exercise to maintain muscle mass and function as we age to continue living independent, active, quality lives. Exercise also helps maintain bone strength to prevent falls that can lead to fractures, one of the leading forms of disability in the older population. Exercise also reduces risk of developing diseases such as diabetes, cancer and heart disease, offers significant cognitive benefits and improves symptoms of anxiety and depression. Of course we also exercise for weight maintenance (though eating habits have a greater impact on this than exercise).
Always check with a health practitioner before beginning an exercise programme. Start slowly and build up to at least 30 minutes, five days a week of moderate exercise, then include some activities listed above. Variety ensures we are moving and engaging different muscles. It keeps it interesting too, so make sure you mix it up. Most importantly, find an activity you enjoy. This increases the likelihood you will continue exercising. Regular movement needs to be an integral part of our lives, for a good quality of life now and in our older years. If you’d like help creating a more healthful way of moving, eating and guidance for healthy weight loss, contact me at paula@nutritionsense.co.nz. In-person and online consultations are available. Art Speak Explosion of colour, culture and texture now on at Estuary Arts Come on down to Estuary Arts for a feast of new exhibitions from 8 June. In Gallery one, be blown away by the hyperrealism achieved by master pastelists Michael and Julie Freeman, alongside other members of the PANZ (Pastel Artists of New Zealand). PANZ promotes pastel as a fine art medium to the public, artists, galleries and exhibition organisers to raise the profile of pastelists within New Zealand and overseas. Pastels are such a versatile and portable art medium, great to take on holiday to capture your travels as you only need paper and your pastels. If you are keen to learn about this medium, there are two upcoming workshops being run by Julie Freeman. An Introduction to Pastels is on Saturday, 12 June from 10am to 3pm followed by a two-day workshop on Saturday, 26 June and Sunday, 27 June, focussing on flowers in pastels. Estuary Arts is pleased to announce that it will feature two digital photographic exhibitions during the Auckland Festival of Photography. The first is the Contemporary African Photography (CAP) Prize, which will run for two weeks from 8 to 22 June. The CAP Association is a not-for-profit association based in Basel, Switzerland, that executes the CAP Prize for Contemporary African Photography awarded annually to five photographic portfolios that engage with the African continent or its diaspora. This show will give you a glimpse into modern Africa with a twist. The second photographic show, Isolation, features haunting images of emptiness and isolation experienced during the COVID-19 lockdowns. On a brighter note, do also have a look at Jeremy Groves’ Nature Photography in the Café. One of the winners from the 2020 Hibiscus and Bays Annual Art Awards was local artist Robyn Kay, who uses fluid acrylic pours to create magical artworks. If you are a fan of fluid acrylic and have not had a chance to try out this intriguing way of making art you can sign up to one of Dill Schroff’s short workshops on paint pouring and paint pulling. More details can be found on our website www.estuaryarts.org. Although winter is looming, EAC is partnering up with local restaurant Northern Union to offer one-off social art nights. These are great, affordable fun nights for a group of friends, work colleagues or partners to enjoy a bit of creativity, wine and a bite to eat in a fun and, most importantly, warm setting. All art materials will be provided and the evenings will be run by a supportive and friendly EAC tutor. For more information and to book your group, contact the Centre on 09 4265570. There is a full range of interesting and fun art workshops in sculpture, painting and even Zentangling on offer in June/July, so we can assure you that EAC is not going to be hibernating this winter! Early retirement is all about the lifestyle ‘It’s more about lifestyle for people in their retirement years. Downsizing to an apartment allows people to free up money by selling their house, and it gives them the freedom to lock up and leave. That campervan trip becomes a lot easier.’ It’s also about security and planning for the future. ‘With everything that’s going on in the world we’ve learnt that few things are certain except our homes, and that’s why where we live has become increasingly important to us.’
The year 2020 painted a fresh picture of retirement – one that steers clear of cruise ships and overseas travel, at least for the time being. We spent more time at home and our values shifted as a result. People began investing in their homes and prioritising their lifestyles more than ever, while appreciating all that New Zealand has to offer in domestic travel. It was also the year that The Botanic, the Hibiscus Coast’s modern, new retirement village was born. The Botanic is designed around an amplified appreciation of lifestyle for young-atheart retirees who want to get the most out of their golden years. A fantastic range of amenities at The Botanic helps to bring this dream to
life. Highlights include a light-filled clubhouse, bar, cafe and a wellness centre equipped with a 20m swimming pool, and a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. Stage One Villas sold out quickly and Stage Two Apartments are selling now. The apartments provide an opportunity to secure a resort-style lifestyle at The Botanic for a great price. Michelle Pipping, a Millwater resident and sales agent for The Botanic, says the apartments are attracting a lot of interest.

Having access to care and increased support may not be important to many retirees now, but it will become important in the future. The Botanic, in construction now, will ultimately offer a full suite of aged-care living. ‘The best advice I can give people is to plan for the future now and not wait until your much older and facing a health crisis.’ One-, two- and three-bedroom apartments are available now, and all have generous balconies or patios.

Millwater ROMEOs
Twelve Millwater ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out) met for morning tea and an instructional hour in The Botanic sales suite at 1 Painton Road in Silverdale (adjacent to the HBC Bus Station). We received a very warm welcome from Michelle Pipping, one of the sales team, who talked – and virtually walked – us through what will become one of the largest retirement lifestyle villages. We were informed of the notable differences and points of distinction that set The Botanic apart from most other retirement villages; not least the lifestyle leisure facilities that include a 20 metre lap pool. Michelle also explained the advantages of not having to move to a serviced apartment (there aren’t any!) in the event of needing support services. She advised that the policy of The Botanic is to provide essential services in your own villa or apartment, so the potential disruption caused by relocation to another part of
the village is avoided. We received clear answers, all of which made sense, to our queries about registering expressions of interest, the fully refundable deposit process, and many other details. Lunch was at Joe’s Garage, just a short stroll from The Botanic sales suite, where eleven ROMEOs partook of the widely varied menu options, all of which were delicious and served with attentively discreet service. Co-owner Tim Lawrence (pictured, in the baseball cap) was proud to show off the gleaming V8 beer pump, which dispenses a selection of fine beverages. Definitely and grand day out for us all.
Bringing new ideas to existing homes Galleryhouse Projects are passionate about bringing new ideas to existing homes. If you like your views, street and neighbours, renovating may be a logical consideration. Renovations can be anything from a cost-effective revision to a more substantial remodel whereby you engage a draughtsman or architect. Budgetary constraints may mean you have to be more creative in your ideas and approach. We look for ways to transform high-end concepts into more cost-effective options.
Renderings Tracy Mathewson began creating renderings for a few land agents and has now included this service at Galleryhouse Projects. Reimagine your home with this cost-effective visual transformation, to illustrate hidden potential before you engage your contractors. For land agents our property transformations can be an excellent selling tool. First impressions and street appeal influence the property appraisal,
perceived value and ultimately the final selling price. A client may not want to spend thousands of dollars upgrading their home or garden to sell. We can improve a property’s street appeal without the time and expense of renovations. Our visuals generate excitement and enthusiasm with a property that lacks creativity or a point of difference. Get buyers excited about a property’s potential upfront and that can often generate multiple interest. Reimagine your home or real estate listing with a ‘before and after’ visual transformation to illustrate potential renovation and upgrade ideas before you engage contractors. To start, all we need is a good quality image of your home. See galleryhouseprojects.nz for more information.

Property Talk It’s time to make hay. The sun may not be shining in the literal sense, but as far as the local property market is concerned, it’s 30 degrees with clear skies for miles. Our local Millwater and Milldale markets have never seen prices this high and property stock this low. So, if ever there was a time to take advantage of a market strongly tilted in the direction of the seller, now is it. I appreciate the current market doesn’t suit many looking to repurchase locally, but for those considering a move to a lifestyle village or out of Auckland, now is certainly a good time to cash in on the massive increases in local sales prices. We know many would-be sellers are waiting for next spring, following the Kiwi adage that houses sell better when the sun is out. However, our experience of recent years is that some of the best sales are achieved over the winter months, when there are less properties for sale but buyer activity is still high. Buyers like seeing a house when the weather is bad so they can check how warm and cosy it can be in those conditions. On the subject of conditions, the government has indicated a desire to see the rapid price escalation of the current market abate sooner rather than later. While it’s yet to be seen whether the latest changes around investment properties will have a material impact on the market and especially pricing, what can be certain is they will keep pulling available levers until they find the right one to slow things down. What other impact this may have on the market and economy in general is open to speculation, but we have seen the law of unintended consequences working overtime for the last 12 months and this will continue as long as the unprecedented circumstances we are experiencing still dominate the world.
What does seem certain is at some point we’ll see a slowdown of the current price increases with the potential for a long term flattening of the market and, as seen previously in Millwater, an overshooting of the effectiveness of changes leading to a short to medium term drop in prices. To put things into perspective, the medium price in Millwater was $1,257,000 in August 2016 prior to the move to 60% LVRs nationwide being introduced and the market hadn’t consistently passed this point again till December 2020. The reality is that prices will plateau if the government wishes them to and as happened previously, they will probably overshoot. The difference between the 2016 peak and the following trough was -18%, which at today’s median price of $1,500,000, looks like a potential drop of $270,000. That’s some scary food for thought. To give you more nutrients for the grey matter, here’s some ideas on how far your Millwater money can go in other markets outside Auckland. Just a short hop up the ever-lengthening northern motorway is Whangarei, a thriving city that has massive potential to gain with port developments, better road and rail access and a climate very similar to Auckland. In April 2021 the median house price for Whangarei District was $670,000 versus Rodney District at $1,141,000. Obviously Millwater is a more expensive suburb than many in Rodney, so to give you a clearer idea of what you may actually expect to spend in Whangarei, here are a couple of recent sales: 39 Maunu Estate Drive – 2-year-old single level home of 269m on lifestyle 2.1 HA site, $1,125,000 39 Wairau Drive – single level brick home of 175m on 625m site, $832,000 13 Scotia Place – single level brick and tile of 216m on 746m, high $800,000’s
A stunning property is available there today, 453 Mt Tiger Road. Spacious modern single level home of 230m on a bush clad 4 hectares with expansive views. Price indication in the $1,000,000’s.
DID YOU KNOW?
Please feel free to get in contact with Jenny Martin from Mike Pero Whangarei for more information on this property. It’s certainly worth having a look at online.
You could save over $10,000 in commission compared to other real estate brands when selling a home for $1,100,000. Find out more at mikepero.com/fees/
So, it is certainly possible to sell a medium priced home in Millwater, purchase in Whangarei District, and potentially downsize the mortgage or increase your bank account by around $500,000. With the increase in work from home options and the general re-invigorating of the provinces, this is certainly a viable option for some and could lead to a vastly different lifestyle. If you would like to discuss how to make this or other alternatives a possibility for you, please get in touch for an obligation free discussion. We’d love to discuss how this may all fall into place for you.

Culinary Lane also provides top quality grazing tables (min 20 people). Mark says he’s seen some grazing tables where the food is scattered around the table too much, with fish, seafood, vegetable, fruit, breads, and cured and cooked meats all touching each other. This can affect flavour and cause cross contamination. With Mark’s grazing tables, the main foods are served on separate wooden platters and plates to keep everything as perfect as when it was first displayed. He sets up your grazing table just before guests arrive so it is extremely fresh and visually appealing.

Fourteen ladies of the Millwater ROWENAs (Retired Old Women Enjoying Nice Afternoons) gathered for our April lunch at The Ship and Anchor in Orewa. This proved to be a very popular venue for lunch, not only for the ROWENAS but also for a number of other people enjoying their meal. It always amazes me what we find to talk about during these very pleasant lunches, but there never appears to be a shortage of topics or a lull in the conversation. In between all the chatter we did manage to enjoy our lunch, the choices for which were varied and everyone enjoyed their meals (I have to admit the French fries were very good!). Our sustained membership levels continue to prove that our varied lunch venues and great company are an ideal formula for all. Margaret Mullan

Crockery for your evening meals Experiment with different colours of crockery also, to help improve the look of your plating. To be honest, most of my crockery is white as it usually contrasts with the colour of the food and makes it stand out better than it would on coloured or patterned plates. Say you are plating a steak with baked potatoes in the skin, broccoli and gravy. They are all dark in colour, so plate them on a white plate to make them stand out. However, if you are plating chicken breast with mashed potatoes and cauliflower, then a dark plate will provide contrast. I have a bit of a fetish when it comes to purchasing crockery. Due to my catering business, Culinary Lane, I require lots of different styles of crockery, but I really do shop around and don’t buy expensive plates unless they really are special. I also tend to use a lot of ramekins, small jugs and little dishes to place sauces and condiments in. This keep the foods separate and helps them look more interesting. Treat yourself to a nice set of cutlery too – it feels so much better eating with heavy, matching cutlery. Next month I will talk about how to place food on the plate to improve its visual appeal. We have all heard the saying ‘you eat with your eyes’. I was also told as a young chef that ‘presentation is 50% of the meal’. I don’t know about that, but it is important to present meals that are visually appealing to the customer. Even when I am cooking for my family, I think of them as the customer. So rather than the flavour of food, let’s talk about what it is served on. I know we can slip into old routines when it comes to plating the family evening meal. I know I am sometimes guilty of grabbing the standard stack of unmatched, white, round and sometimes chipped plates from the cupboard when feeding my family. The easiest solution to improving the look of your food is to buy some new crockery. It really doesn’t have to be expensive, but can provide variety. You can use oval, round and square bowls, and square, rectangular, oval and round plates. You can also use a variety of sizes. A dish can look totally different when plated on a larger plate as it gives the illusion of that ‘restaurant’ look.

The Importance of Meth Testing
level, then the tribunal sensibly had to fall in line. Despite this, the double standard is still causing confusion. Some landlords don’t bother with meth testing, but they are laying themselves open to potential claims if they provide a property for letting that happens to be above the safe level. The lesson is simple: follow a meth testing regime to protect yourself as well as the inhabitants of your property. A couple of recent tribunal decisions indicate that, even if the detected meth level is below 15mcg, a pre-tenancy test showing an absence of methamphetamine is sufficient to match with a detected presence at end of tenancy, establishing that contamination occurred during the tenancy. That becomes a slam dunk, showing that the tenant did not maintain and leave the property ‘reasonably clean and reasonably tidy’. A win for the landlord here will enable the tribunal to order a claim against the tenant, helping to cover the owner’s insurance excess. It is better to be safe than sorry. Craig Harrison | Principal, Quinovic, Millwater https://www.quinovic.co.nz/millwater/ It is not unusual these days to read a news item about methamphetamine contamination. This blight has been addressed by government in the development of regulations and laws specifying unsafe levels in housing. In mid-2017, the long-awaited standard for testing and decontamination of methamphetamine-contaminated properties, NZS 8510, was released. This standard adopts a single level of 1.5mcg of methamphetamine (per 100cm2 of surface sampled), regardless of whether a property was involved in the production or use of meth. A year later, the government’s chief science advisor reported that current science indicated a level of 15mcg was acceptably safe. This has thrown the rental housing industry into a level of uncertainty and confusion. The standard remains at 1.5mgc, but the Tenancy Tribunal started enforcing the higher level of 15mcg. One adjudicator noted that when New Zealand’s largest landlord (Housing New Zealand) regards 15mcg as the new

Invisible Doors and Fridge Hidden doors have become a popular addition to many home owners’ dream list as they help use space in clever ways and create a minimalistic aesthetic. This feature can provide discreet concealment of some of the more mundane aspects of the house; butler’s pantry, powder room, laundry, storage or even the master bedroom, for privacy. While integrating your fridge is no longer a new idea, there are many different ways to present this integrated feature. Forward planning is required as perfect alignment of every panel and a precise finish that attends to every detail is necessary to create the illusion of invisibility. In fact we think successfully integrating your fridge into your kitchen requires a little bit of wizardry! Can you find the fridge in the photo? Are you planning to build or keen to know the latest trends in building? This month we’ve gathered a few ideas to keep you up to date.
Flush fit curtain tracks How wonderful would it be to have a minimalist look with no visible curtain tracks? Flush fit curtain tracks are recessed into the ceiling. The track sits inside the ceiling lining and require no brackets for installation, creating a superior finish. A thicker than standard ceiling is required for this feature, so remember to discuss with your builder at the pre-construction stage of your project.
YOUR WISHLIST SPECIALIST Bring us your wish list with your needs and your niceto-haves. Always lusted after a scullery? Dreamed of a man cave? A secret door? Let us know and we’ll find a way to make it happen using our experience and knowledge to guide you in the right direction. Magic!
Louvres Louvres do not need to be just a roof system that can be opened or closed based on the weather. They can also be used for a wide range of purposes. These include an alternative option to shade your home and as a screen for privacy, as well as creating a strong design feature for your home. If you drive up Manuel Road in Millwater you will find some good examples there. Fancy of any of these ideas? Check out our website for more photos. https://www.maddrenhomes.co.nz/innovation

Welcome Mr Kurt Dorset New Head of Wentworth Primary School A focus on Mathematics, English and Science In 2013, Wentworth Primary School adopted the International Cambridge Primary Curriculum for Mathematics, English and Science. This is a worldrecognised academic programme. At a time when the media is reporting a weakness in Maths and Science achievements in New Zealand schools, Wentworth students consistently gain high achievement standards ahead of the national average.
A happy child is a child who will learn
The new Head of Wentworth Primary School, Mr Kurt Dorset, joined Wentworth this year following 11 years at Saint Kentigern Boys’ School. Mr Dorset has held many management roles and brings with him a great deal of experience in the areas of curriculum and enhancing teaching practice. He enjoys playing and following a wide variety of sports and spending time with his wife and two young sons. Mr Dorset states, ‘I was excited to accept the position at Wentworth Primary School. The educational philosophy and values that underpin the current success of Wentworth fit well with my own educational philosophy.’ Wentworth Primary School is an amazing school with just over 100 students. The average class size at Wentworth is 15 students, with class sizes capped to preserve the school’s culture. In addition, it only has single year level classes. There is a growing trend in primary education to use composite classes with multiple year levels in one classroom, and open plan learning areas. Wentworth believes there is plenty of research that shows this model does not work, with children disadvantaged by noise levels, a lack of one on one attention by the teachers and a lack of quiet place for focussed study.
Wentworth Primary provides a nurturing and kind environment for young students. Its low student– teacher ratio means that the teachers know each child, their social, emotional and even medical needs. Belonging to a close-knit community is important for developing a sense of safety. When a child feels safe and happy in school, they are able to grow and develop, learn and succeed. Mr Dorset agrees, ‘The sense of community and family at Wentworth is very strong and contributes to what makes this school so special.’ Wentworth Primary School’s next Open Day is on Wednesday, 23 June.

Fine Travel destinations NZ – Eagles Nest Eagles Nest is a boutique, award-winning retreat set on 75 acres with panoramic views of the Bay of Islands. Made up of five luxurious, completely secluded villas each with their own hot tub (four also with their own heated infinity pools), it is the perfect location for ultimate relaxation. Each villa has a home cinema, gas BBQ and a fireplace for those colder months. The most amazing of the villas is the four-bedroom premier villa, Rahimoana, which is set on 44 acres with a 300-degree view of the ocean and landscape. It comes with a 25m pool, eight bathrooms, sliding glass walls, gym, sauna, helipad, and a private beach and bushwalk. If you feel like exploring further afield, the use of a Porsche Cayenne is also included in the rate.
Eagles Nest is an amazing place for a thoroughly relaxing getaway, however, if you are feeling a bit adventurous during your stay, there are 75 acres of native bush, secluded beaches and 144 islands close by to explore. The resort is also the perfect base to explore the beautiful Bay of Islands, which has plenty of activities on offer from fishing trips, scenic cruises, swimming with dolphins, parasailing or even sky diving. Although the retreat itself is very secluded, Russell is a just short two-minute drive away, and for a bigger selection of restaurants and shopping you can catch the ferry from there to Paihia. The retreat has a fantastic collection of New Zealand wines
and their private chefs spoil guests with delectable menus showcasing a diverse range of locally sourced food (crayfish, lobster, venison, oysters, cheese, olives, chocolate and more). If you prefer to cook yourself, each villa has its own gourmet kitchen and there is a general store close by in Russell. If you fancy a drive to Kerikeri you can also source local produce from The Old Packhouse Market (every Saturday) or the Bay of Islands Farmers Market (every Sunday).
Next month we will explore closer to home in the Auckland region. Jennie Ready

Our group of nine women had limited experience of ten pin bowling but did not let this stand in the way of having a good time. To everyone’s surprise there were a large number of strikes, followed by a few nines! Competition was tight but the winner on the day was Carolyn Robertson, closely followed by our new member, Judy Forbes. It was generally agreed that we could all benefit from playing more regularly, judging by the number of gutter balls and the ensuing hilarity, but it proved to be a fun way to spend the morning. After the game we drove to Silver Moon café in Silverdale for a much needed energy top-up. The food was, as usual, up to their high standard and we enjoyed a good catch-up.

Responsibilities of Company Directors The recent Mainzeal Court of Appeal ruling has highlighted the risk to those in the position of company director. While the Mainzeal decision addresses issues for directors of larger companies, it is important for all company directors to recognise that, regardless of how big or small the company is, as a director you must comply with specified directors’ duties. The key piece of legislation that sets out these duties is the Companies Act 1993 (Act). The Act also sets out the consequences for a breach of directors’ duties.
Directors’ Duties The Act sets out some of the core directors’ duties, including that a director must: • act in good faith and in the best interests of the company (Note that in an insolvency situation the interests of the company’s creditors may also need to be considered.) • exercise due care, diligence and skill • exercise their powers for a proper purpose • ensure that the company complies with the Act and its constitution • not allow or agree to the company carrying on business in a manner likely to create substantial risk of serious loss to its creditors • ensure that the company does not incur obligations unless they are satisfied on reasonable grounds that it will be able to perform them.
For further information on the full extent of a director’s duties, there are some good resources available online. A good starting point is the Companies Office website, https://companies-register. companiesoffice.govt.nz/help-centre/ company-directors/what-it-means-tobe-a-director/. What could happen if I did breach my duties? If a director were to breach one of their duties and a claim was brought against them by a fellow director, shareholder or interested party, they may be ordered to repay money (with interest), restore property to the company or provide compensation. In cases of a serious breach of the duty of good
faith, directors may be convicted of an offence, be subject to penalties such as a fine or, in some cases, face imprisonment. If you are setting up a business and want to understand the best structure and your role and obligations under that business structure, contact us on 09 421 0559 or at silverdale@simpsonwestern. co.nz. Hats off to an Innovative Insurer ability to earn income, the lump-sum TPD payment was very gratefully received by my client. In my client’s words: ‘Wow! Thank you so much again. I know this is your job, but it is life changing for us at this time.’ It was a pleasure to be able to help this family at a time of medical and financial stress and a blessing that we had secured excellent cover for them with a quality insurer.

At UProtectNZ Insurance Services we have agency relationships with six different insurers, which provides us with access to a full range of products in the market and enables us to take account of the points of difference between insurers. By retaining access to a wide range of insurers we are able to identify the best match to meet our clients’ needs. All insurance companies have their specific ‘sweet spots’. It’s our job to find the best ‘sweet spot’ for each client, in terms of the type, quality and amount of insurance cover, while ensuring the cost is competitive and manageable. Since entering the market in 2011, Partners Life has forged a reputation as a high-quality, innovative insurer. It was the first to offer $50,000 child trauma cover as an inbuilt benefit of a parent’s trauma cover. Partners Life was also the first to include own occupation Total Permanent Disability (TPD) as an inbuilt covered condition under its trauma cover. Other insurers now offer TPD linked to their trauma policies but, unlike Partners Life, it comes at an additional premium cost! The value of having TPD as a free covered condition with the Partners Life trauma cover was recently illustrated. Following a serious back injury, a long-term client has been unable to work for 19 months and is presently receiving a monthly disability insurance benefit. A subsequent failed spinal fusion operation caused further complications, leaving him unable to ever return to his normal, pre-disability occupation. Partners Life accepted the TPD claim lodged under the trauma cover policy. While nothing can never replace a lifetime of normal mobility and the

Millwater Asian Corner beauty in herself. She found her passion was so strong that she decided to quit her high-paid job as a senior merchandiser to pursue a Diploma in Professional Make-Up Artistry. After all the hard work, her talent shined. She was employed by a renowned TV station as a make-up artist for celebrities for TV drama. But it didn’t take long for her to realise the job didn’t fulfil her vision and values. ‘I want my make-up to make individuals feel confident and believe that they are uniquely beautiful just the way they are. Genuinely.’ In search for a more meaningful and connected relationship with clients, she started focusing on bridal make-up, which she enjoys. ‘It’s about meeting people and making dreams come true on their special day.’ Around the same time, she started a blog about her life in Singapore, but she kept receiving requests to share beauty and make-up tips. Finally, Elrica decided to turn her blog into a beauty blog. After not very long she became the most popular and successful beauty blogger in Singapore and has now accumulated 2.2 million views. Beauty brands flooded in, sending her samples for review, such as SKII, Kose and Kiehls, to name just a few. It was a colourful life, mostly spent in photo shoots, magazine interviews, product launch events and TV interviews; some were live, which was pretty scary!
Bling Bling! Let’s meet Elrica, one of the most successful beauty bloggers in Singapore, who has just settled down in Millwater to start the next stage of her life. Born and raised in Indonesia, Elrica started her working life in Singapore after finishing university. Elrica always felt she was not beautiful enough in her childhood, with her parents comparing her to other children (I am sure many Asian readers can relate to this), especially to a beautiful cousin of the same age. Carrying low self-esteem for years, her life changed when a friend said to her, ‘Don’t feel ashamed, you are beautiful. You are just not taking good care of yourself.’ From that moment on she started to take good care of herself, put on some makeup, try different beauty care products and began to find the
The highlights of her blogger life is winning the Singapore Beauty Blog Awards two years in a row, being appointed as ambassador for Korean cosmetic brands and winning a makeup beauty contest that lead her to Japan for Tokyo Fashion Week. Elrica and her family moved to Auckland six years ago. She now works full time as a beauty product merchandiser and has two beautiful children. Life is still colourful, just in a different way.

Millwater Recipes Vegan Banana Bread 1 x loaf recipe This banana bread recipe is vegan and one of the best I have cooked. It has no eggs but more banana so it is very moist and flavoursome. I still like it toasted and spread with butter though!
Ingredients 200gms x soft brown sugar 280gms x caster sugar 160gms x melted coconut oil 5 x ripe bananas (the riper the better) 375gms x white flour (high grade or standard) 1tsp x baking soda 1tsp x ground cinnamon 1tsp x mixed spice powder 175mls x organic soy milk ½ tsp x vanilla extract
Method Peel the bananas and puree in a kitchen whizz or place in a large bowl and puree with a potato masher. Place the sugars, spices,
baking soda, vanilla extract and flour in a large bowl and mix well. Add the pureed banana, soya milk and melted coconut oil to the dry ingredients and mix gently to form a smooth batter. Oil spray a bread tin and line with baking paper and re-oil the paper. Put the banana batter into the mould and place on the centre rack of a 160C preheated oven for around 25 to 30 minutes on fan bake, or until it is fully cooked in the middle of the loaf. Place a wooden skewer into the centre of the banana loaf and if it comes out clean the loaf is cooked in the middle. Remove from the oven and when the loaf has cooled slightly, remove from the mould and place on a baking rack to cool. Keep in an airtight container in the pantry or fridge for up to four days.

Pork with tomato and egg bowl
The Hope Shop Relaunch
Ingredients 1 pork fillet 6 tomatoes 5 eggs Boiled vegetables of your choice Cooked rice Soy sauce Corn flour Sesame oil 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar
Method 1. Cut pork into 1cm thick slices. Marinate with some soy sauce, pepper and sesame oil. 2. Cut tomatoes into quarters, remove hard core. 3. Coat pork with some corn flour, panfry on medium heat for 1 minute then turn to low heat, cover and cook for 1 minute. 4. Turn, cover and cook for further 1 minute or until pork is fully cooked. 5. Stir in tomato, brown sugar and quickly stir until tomato is soft. 6. Remove from saucepan and set aside. 7. Whisk eggs with approximately 2 tablespoons of water. Cook as you do scramble egg, but make it thinner so it can cover the rice when it is served. 8. Assemble everything in a bowl with rice and boiled vegetables. An easy and healthy family meal. Happy cooking!

Youth in Transition, the youth support charity covering Orewa, Silverdale, Millwater and Whangaparaoa Coast, recently relaunched The Hope Shop at an evening event in Manly Village. The Hope Shop is a recycled clothing designer store based in Manly Village. The shop was established as a pop-up op shop in 2019. From January 2021 it is a new look, new style shop featuring designer brand womenswear and menswear. The Hope Shop plays an important role in helping to support youth in our community, through the Journey Back to Awesome programme. This programme is unique and has proven highly successful in addressing the needs of our young people who are dealing with such issues as low self-esteem, anxiety, depression and suicidal thinking and all the stresses of transitioning into adulthood. Thanks to the generous support from our community, the shop has enabled Youth in Transition to support even more young people. The Millwater Women’s Group, who already provide grocery items for client sessions, will now also donate clothing items for sale at The Hope Shop.

D ES IG NED IN STE P W I TH N ATURE CREAT ED FO R L I V E S F UL L O F P U R P O S E At The Botanic, we believe our retirement years are our very best years. It’s a magical phase of life when we renew, connect, find purpose and live joyful lives immersed in community and surrounded by nature. We know how important it is to support people to live healthy, active lives and that’s why we’ve placed purpose, wellness, nature and joy at the heart of our vision for The Botanic – a stunning new retirement village in development in Silverdale, and the very best in class in modern aged care living. Swim laps in the 20m pool, play Pebble Beach on the golf simulator, stroll along the tree-lined boardwalk, relish delicious cuisine at our restaurant, or enjoy a glass of wine at the light-filled Club House in the heart of The Botanic village. Or perhaps you’d like to busy yourself in the Resident’s Workshop or take sanctuary in our Wellness Centre? There are vegetable gardens, orchard trees in the park-like setting, a cinema, an arts and crafts centre, croquet, pétanque, private dining rooms and a fitness centre with a spa and sauna. It’s all here and it’s your choice. You choose how to live your magical years, your way. The Botanic offers 80 villas and 383 apartments for independent living residents, and our aged care home will provide 40 care beds to meet the full range of care needs. Adjacent to the Silverdale Park and Ride, 15 minutes from Albany’s Westfield Mall and 5 minutes from the Northern Motorway.
