Meet Richard and Becks not only their children and grandchildren as beneficiaries, but also their partners, ex-partners and even caregivers such as nannies. This wasn’t what Richard and Becks had intended, but as the lawyer explained, the existing trust could not be modified to remove beneficiaries.

The couple had two options: set up a new, modern trust with a smaller class of beneficiaries and settle the assets onto it, or wind up the existing trust and put everything back into their own names.

The lawyer advised them that the right to occupy the villa in the retirement village could not be owned by the trust.

Furthermore, now that they didn’t have the business risk or any family issues necessitating a trust, winding it up was the sensible option. They could still protect their daughters’ inheritance with wellcrafted wills.

Richard and Becks took this advice. They wound up their trust and drafted new, more extensive wills. They sold their Takapuna home, purchasing the occupation right to a lovely villa in the retirement village. They were very happy with the outcome, satisfied that the trust had done its job — providing peace of mind when they needed it.

Richard and Becks, both in their early 70s, were considering selling their family home in Takapuna and making the move to a retirement village. After many weekends touring the different villages, they settled on the perfect one.

When they went to their lawyer to seek advice on the Occupation Right Agreement, she suggested they take this opportunity to review their wills and trust documents. Their assets, including their home and managed funds, were in a trust they had set up as business owners in the mid 90s.

Socialising your dog gives them positive experiences that build their resilience to interactions and changes in the world around them. It also helps raise your dog to be a great companion and sets them up for success.

The first few weeks after you get your puppy is a crucial time for helping them develop vital social skills and resilience. Try experiences such as having a neighbour walk past the house, the crinkling of a water bottle or starting the washing machine.

Of course, always reward your puppy with treats to help create positive associations with each new social situation and interaction. Over time, this will help make experiences such as people visiting or going to dog-friendly cafés much less stressful.

Here are some other ideas for creating positive associations for your new puppy.

Handling: Start with the easy one – pat your puppy! Take this a step further if your puppy is comfortable, by feeling over their body, touching their feet, tail, head and ears, drip-feeding them their dinner or treats with lots of good boy/girl as positive reinforcement.

Moments with Love – The mother-daughter duo

For this month’s issue I was lucky enough to meet the wonderful Rachel Peterson. Rachel is a mother and the founder/ owner of Moments with Love. Rachel hasn’t had an easy life: she has muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair every day.

Being a mum has always been a dream for Rachel and she is now a mother to both Molly (21) and Ruby (9).

When she decided to become a mother 22 years ago and became pregnant, she was heavily judged and immediately handed a termination card by her doctors. What was supposed to be the happiest moment in her life was negatively judged by medical professionals because of her condition and her being in a wheelchair. But she didn’t give up. Rachel carried on and gave birth to her daughter Molly. Ten years later Rachel and her partner decided to have another child and her experience was completely different and more positive.

Rachel and Molly talked for a long time about starting a business together. After many conversations over much wine, Rachel and Molly finally conceived and began their Moments with Love business, where they create high-quality gift boxes with a twist. Their mission is to ‘provide you with an experience that will bring joy and create treasured memories as you enjoy a moment of love of your own.’

Each box is carefully curated to feature something to wear, something to do and something delicious to eat and drink.

Jo Robertson – design in her DNA way the light will bounce off your bathroom tiles or the softness of your carpet as your feet first hit the floor. To do that she starts with you, with how you live, what you care about and styles you love. She then creates concepts and specifications to suit your brief. Did you know that changing from Arial font to Century Gothic saves 30% ink when printing?

This is a great example of something easy that can be done to help reduce waste. We all know how wasteful ink cartridges can be as they are often used so quickly. While natural inks such as soybean options are available, most inks are petroleum based.

On top of being carcinogenic, the use and extraction of this crude oil is a large contributor to climate change.

Thankfully, you can at least recycle empty ink cartridges, toners and other printing consumables by bringing them into drop off points such as Warehouse Stationery.

Another great eco tip while at your computer is to use Ecosia as your search engine. It is funded by advertising in the same way Google is, and functions the same, however Ecosia dedicates 100% of their profits to climate action, predominantly by planting trees. They are powered by 200% renewable energy because their solar panels produce twice

the energy needed to power all searches. As someone who is highly cautious of trusting anything unfamiliar online, I can verify that Ecosia is a trustworthy site that I have been using for years.

Thankfully, so many workplaces now go paperless and commutes to work have lessened with the increase of working from home, but these are all things to think about when pressing print or starting your car. My husband’s workplace has removed all personal rubbish bins from desks so that employees are forced to bring their waste to the itemised bins for landfill, recycling and compost. Are there any suggestions you could bring to your place of work to improve your global footprint? Maybe a lovely desk plant for better air quality would be a nice touch!

Let’s celebrate Matariki at Estuary Arts Centre Saturday 25 June, 11am to 12pm: Paul Conroy ‘Creating Art with a Camera’. An open and interactive discussion on how we move from capturing an image to creating a piece of art through the medium of photography. Everyone is welcome to attend and no prior booking is required.

In Gallery Two, Marina Waller will be showing her plein air travel sketches. This exhibition titled ‘From Sketch to Frame’ showcases Marina’s creative process from raw sketches done outdoors at the source of inspiration to their final completion.

‘There is such a vibrancy in the raw sketches which I think is beautiful and vital, often more powerful than the refined completed works’ says curator Kim Boyd. If learning to sketch and paint from real life is something that you are interested in, let us know so that we can schedule a few weekend workshops.

In Gallery Four, Estuary Arts members celebrate Ngā Mata o te Ariki, more commonly known as Matariki or Māori New Year. The exhibition will feature a range of artwork from painting and printmaking to harakeke woven kete and kono. Come along and view the variety of artwork on show.

Estuary Arts Centre was part of Ara Taiohi Youth week this May, running a two-day mural painting workshop for teenagers coordinated by local artist Susannah Law and Creed Bell, who are part of the Mural Moreporks artists group. The outcome is fantastic. The theme was an Orewa version of Van Gogh’s Starry Night Sky painting. This was designed and drawn up by the students and then painted. It incorporates the South bridge to the North bridge of Orewa and includes the beach with Norfolk pines, Pohutukawa and familiar landmarks and buildings of Orewa.

The end of June is Estuary Arts membership renewal time.

June brings the Auckland Festival of Photography, which EAC is always keen to be part of. This year from 8 June to 3 July the Hibiscus Coast Photographic group will feature 38 photos by their members in Gallery One called ‘Captured with Light’.

Images range from traditional and contemporary landscapes to figures, and flora and fauna. There will also be two FREE artist talks in studio one: Saturday 11 June, 11am to 12pm: Martin Sanders ‘A Guide’s Bird Photography on TiriTiri Matangi Island.’ While the emphasis of the talk will be on photography, it will also promote Tiri and the photographic opportunities this special Island offers.

Why do we need food?

Our bodies are in a constant state of activity; old cells are being broken down and removed as waste; new cells are being built; hormones are being constructed; enzymes need to be manufactured to name a few. The human body is made up of 30 to 70 trillion cells and about 200 different cell types. The cells lining our entire intestine are replaced every 5 to 7 days.

On average, we manufacture 2 to 3 million red blood cells every second! We need the right components to make them properly and these must come from the food we eat. So what components are we providing for our bodies to perform these vital tasks properly?

Food is not just about calories, it is about providing our bodies with the many different nutrients it needs in order to make these critical components that keep us not just alive, but healthy. We can’t make the components our bodies need if we don’t have the right building materials and we need to consume food that provides these critical components to us.

Which is why what we eat matters. If we are consuming lots of ‘food-like’ products lacking the essential components, we can ‘starve’ the body of building materials. Malnutrition is no longer something that only occurs in poor countries. Western nations are now becoming overfed and undernourished as we move to increasingly nutrient-poor ‘foods’.

So are we eating food that supplies our bodies with the crucial building-block nutrients it needs?

It seems like a bit of a daft question. Everybody knows we need to eat food to survive, right? But what do we define as food? In our ever-changing food landscape, this is becoming increasingly difficult to determine. Are we largely consuming ‘food-like’ substances? Are these ‘food-like’ substances supplying what our bodies need to function properly?

Food must provide nutrients that support the millions of biochemical reactions happening in our bodies every day. Nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals, fibre, proteins, carbohydrates and fats are all equally important.

Check the lifejacket has not been previously activated, as the cylinder can only be used once, by checking that the green or red clip is in place and that the cylinder does not have a hole pierced in the top. If it does, replace the cylinder.

Replacement cylinders can be purchased from most marine supply shops such as Burnsco. Replace the cylinder and check it is tightened firmly, then open up the lifejacket and fully inflate using the oral inflation tube. Leave the jacket overnight to check there is no loss of pressure/inflation. Then deflate the jacket by turning the inflation tube cap upside down and pressing the one way valve to release all of the air. Once all the air is expelled, re-fold the jacket along the printed lines, starting at the side furthest from the oral inflation tube.

Your inflatable lifejacket should be serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. Refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations for full servicing details relevant to your inflatable lifejacket. If you aren’t sure then it’s worth taking the jacket to your marine supply store and asking the question.

It is the skippers responsibility to carry enough lifejackets of the right size and type for everyone on board. We recommend that lifejackets are worn at all times when underway, especially by children and non-swimmers. Lifejackets must also be worn in any situation where there is an increased risk to safety. You will notice our volunteers wear the Hutchwilco 170N inflatables all day, every day we are onboard either of our vessels.

Before you store them away this winter, check zips, buckles, waist belts and all other fastening mechanisms and devices for excessive wear, cracking, fraying corrosion or anything to indicate possible loss of strength.

Your inflatable lifejacket is a life saving device. Care for it as though your life depends on it. One day, it just might.

June is typically when the cold weather hits and the fish are harder to find. It seems the weather changes around Queens Birthday every year, but that’s not to say you shouldn’t be out there fishing. You just need to change your tactics and perhaps use a little bait to bring on the bite.

I have been in between boats the last couple of months with limited access to fishing but I’m all sorted now and I’m ready to hit some mid-week weather windows as soon as the wind settles down a bit. This time of year, I will be focussing on early morning and late evening bait and burley sessions in close, or finding signs around the 50m mark south of Little Barrier Island and drifting lures with small bits of bait on them.

Last month we booked a charter with Mad Max, based out of Whitianga, to chase a swordfish. We headed down on the Friday night and the next morning we left the marina at 5.30am

and headed for the 500m contour lines. The swell was an easterly 2-3m with a mixed wind chop on top. Needless to say the hazy pale ales from the night before and the bacon and egg pie for breakfast wasn’t sitting too well in our stomachs. By daybreak I was having to clear the bacon and egg out of my nostrils after losing my breakfast over the side. This was the first for me in a very long time. We always get into holiday mode as soon as we get down there and pay for it the next day. One day we will learn. By about 1pm we managed to open our first beer but it was a very slow day waiting for a bite. Sword fishing is a game of patience but the reward is worth the effort. We had a couple of enquiries and a trailer boat near us landed one but unfortunately we came home empty handed this trip. But hey, that’s fishing. Otherwise it would be called catching. Tight lines!

Getting the most out of cheaper cuts of meat this winter rise in price. Now I love a big piece of pan roasted eye fillet – it would be my favourite due to its tenderness and subtle flavour – but not far behind is a perfectly braised lump of beef cheek, cooked so it falls apart when you cut into it. I have several cheaper cuts on my menus – everything from beef cheek to brisket, chicken livers and braised lamb shoulder.

Eye fillet is easy to overcook if you aren’t confident in cooking a steak, and overcooking an eye fillet will make it dry and tougher. Beef cheeks require more effort to prep, but once they are slowly braising in the oven you can forget about them for four hours. When they are finished you will have a far more flavoursome meat that is more tender and it will have made its own gravy during the slow braise. It’s exactly the same with most cheaper cuts: low and slow. Beef brisket is around the same price as cheeks and once it’s been braised you can just pull it with a fork to have an awesome flavoured and tender meat. Braising is just cooking a tougher cut of meat gently in liquid until it is transformed into a tender, succulent, fall-offthe-bone masterpiece.

When I was a younger chef, there weren’t many cheaper cuts of meat on the menu as people didn’t really know that much about them. Restaurants used first class cuts (prime cuts) such as eye fillet or loins.

When you did get the cheaper cuts, such as lamb shanks or livers, they were super cheap as they certainly weren’t in vogue so they were very plentiful to buy.

These days you will find a lamb shank, beef cheek, brisket or ribs on most menus, but they certainly aren’t as cheap as they used to be as demand for their use has seen them steadily

Some other cuts you could try this winter include pork belly, pork shoulder, lamb shoulder or neck. Give them a try. You’ll be surprised how easy it is and how much more flavour you will achieve. But remember to cook them low, slow and with liquid. Use lots of fresh or dried herbs and items such as stock powders, tinned tomatoes and wine for added flavour. There’s nothing like eating a hearty winter warmer when it’s cold and saving some money at the same time.

Shareholders’ rights – what are drag-along and tag-along clauses? to also sell their shares or the business to that same buyer. Put more simply, the minority shareholders can be ‘dragged’ or forced into the sale.

Drag-along clauses are a protection for majority shareholders.

Often an incoming purchaser will want complete control of the business and a drag-along clause allows the sale to proceed despite a minority shareholder who is reluctant to sell. Minority shareholders should therefore be weary of such clauses due to the risk they could be forced to sell their shares if the option is exercised.

Tag-along In contrast, a tag-along clause provides that where a majority shareholder has negotiated a sale of their shares to a third party, that majority shareholder will, at the request of the minority shareholders, endeavour to procure an offer on the same terms for the minority shareholders, i.e. minority shareholders are able to ‘tag-along’ on the sale.

Starting a business is an exciting proposition. However, life circumstances may change or shareholding relationships may alter such that you wish to exit the company. It is important to ensure all parties are on the same page from the start as to how you will manage your exit arrangement.

The best place to record this agreement is in a Shareholders’ Agreement, which sits alongside a company’s constitution and governs the relationship between the shareholders.

Shareholding exit arrangements can be complex, but two common types of clauses are ‘drag-along’ and ‘tag-along’ provisions.

Tag-along clauses are an important protection for minority shareholders as it provides them with an opportunity to possibly exit the company should the majority shareholder decide to sell their shares. In these circumstances, a minority shareholder may not want to be in business with the new majority shareholder.

As we head into the second half of the year, I find myself reflecting on the last four months since my leap of faith into real estate business ownership, and I can confidently say it’s been a fantastic ride so far. The real estate market has certainly changed and I remain very grateful for the team I have by my side.

Looking at the local property market, it’s neither good nor bad, the glass is neither full nor empty, it’s just how you look at it and prepare for it. The cooling housing market means opportunity for some and stress for others. There has certainly been some change this year and with this change comes definite opportunity for both buyers and sellers. Well presented, well priced homes continue to sell but the full-throttle ‘pedal to the metal’ price rises of 2021 have definitely eased.

The reality is this: if you are thinking about purchasing in Millwater at any stage in the future, now is the time to do it. Try keeping things in perspective and see the wood for the trees. Yes, house prices have shifted downward and there are additional pressures on the market such as interest rates and the CCCFA, but as long as your intention is not to flip the house in the short term the market will catch up. Such is the lifecycle of the New Zealand property market.

Try not to let the media hype of a property crash lead you to make poor decisions that could mean you miss out on something you really want. If you can’t find what you want on the market now, chances are you are looking for something that doesn’t exist, or possibly is so sought after it will always be in strong demand.

If you’re wanting to buy in Millwater and don’t have an unlimited budget, you are better served focusing on the fundamentals of real estate: location, orientation and size. Don’t worry about curtains, tiles, kitchens and bathrooms that you may not love. Ask yourself: Is it in the right area? Can the kids walk to school? Does it get great sun? Smart buyers are out there buying right now.

They are buying houses with good fundamentals and investing their significant savings in changing the things that they don’t like.

There is some talk about Auckland suffering no shortage of housing within the next 18 months. This will be based not just on the population decline and brain drain, but also a boom of close to 21,000 consents over the past year compared to less than 4,000 ten years ago. Construction of new homes are slowly filling in the gaps.

For those of you thinking about selling or currently trying to, the focus needs to be on what you are going to do next, rather than fixating on the potential value of your current home. The ultimate sale price on your property may be lower than you expected, but it will put you in a strong cash position and the cost of your next place will most likely be much lower than you would have paid six months to a year ago. Overall, you have a win and get to move on.

Welcome to my latest monthly Property Talk – a chance to share some general knowledge about the property market in our local area.

There is a lot of chatter throughout New Zealand surrounding the housing market and what is to come. However, here in Orewa we are holding steady. The market saturation in Rodney is staying relatively level (1,496 listings in early April and currently 1,517 for early May), and the median house price is also holding – $1,548,000 for April compared to $1,351,000 in March.

Last month we mentioned the increase in the OCR, and it will be a time before we see the impacts of this change by the Reserve Bank. At the time of writing we are expecting another increase on 25 May. We are seeing a little more time taken in the actions of buyers and an increase in days to sell, but with an active agent on your side the market isn’t as doom and gloom as it may appear in some media. If you are looking to sell, understanding where your property sits as it is presented to potential buyers is vital, which is where an effective agent comes in. The success of auctions is falling, however, a great campaign may still include an auction and be successful. It is all about navigating and understanding your niches and targets.

At this point in time, if you’re looking to sell, it is imperative that you have an agent that is well-versed in the market and can position you and your property to sell. This includes a current and very precise marketing scheme that will put your property at the forefront of buyers’ minds. Why do I keep coming back to Toastmasters? others. But finally, my most recent reason for re-joining (and I’m still here) is to meet some local people.

Silverdale-Orewa Toastmasters June meetings are Thursday 9th and Thursday 23rd from 7:30pm to 9:30pm and visitors are most welcome.

People join toastmasters for many reasons. Some leave after a couple of years, having achieved their objectives. Others stay for life or, like me, just keep on coming back.

I first joined Toastmasters at the recommendation of my sales manager and a sales trainer over 30 years ago. I had zero interest in public speaking but was very keen to make a success of my sales career. Confidence would be found at Toastmasters they said. They were right.

A number of years later, when looking for help in my new management position, I returned to Toastmasters. They said it would help with my leadership skills. They were right again.

Creating a mood with colour Tones that can help create certain moods include: • warm and muted – come across as friendly, softer, and more approachable • bright and clear – come across as strong, intentional and attention-grabbing • light and bright – come across as fresh and happy • dark and muted – come across as serious and commanding Knowing this information can help you project yourself in a certain way that may in turn help you achieve a desired outcome.

Let’s say you are more of an introverted person, but you want to be seen as professional and in charge. Using dark and muted colours to speak the words for you will help you gain confidence without having to say too much, so you can save your energy for when you need to most.

Or, if you are an extrovert and love to be loud and bold, but in a certain situation you need to come across as gentle, soft, and approachable, then you could consider lighter shades or even go floral.

A few other examples of colour combinations for different situations include: • navy blue and powder blue for a professional projection • periwinkle and deep plum for an elegant evening • beige and pink for a delicate, soft approach • purple and red for a fun approach

Illuminate Community Trust appoints parenting coach and kicks off first community seminar therapeutic care and more. She has also recently become accredited in the facilitation of two HALO Institute (USA) associated courses, ‘Making Sense of Your Worth’ and ‘Parenting for Positive Self-Worth’.

Illuminate Community Trust (ICT) has announced the exciting addition of Emma Berry as parent coach, to strengthen support to the local community. Emma’s time will be shared between ICT and her role as a therapeutic care advisor at Open Home Foundation NZ. One of the first ICT initiatives for parents this year is an upcoming short seminar hosted by Emma entitled ‘Build healthy connections with those around you’. The seminar open to all and the cost is nominal.

Emma says ‘At the seminar you will discover that our earliest relational experiences have a profound impact on all subsequent interactions throughout our lifetime. The way our needs were met (or not met) and the emotional responses we received from our primary caregiver – as an infant/toddler – have hard-wired our brain and formed the lens through which we see ourselves, others and the world. If your needs were met by a loving, responsive and caring caregiver, you will likely have a secure attachment style. Experts suggest approximately 50% of the population have a secure attachment style.

Preventing breakouts and how to treat them

Sometimes it may seem like your skin is impossible to manage, especially when you wake up and find a huge zit on your face.

The good news is, this is where a trained skincare therapist can help. We help to prevent and treat teenage acne skin problems.

A pimple starts when pores in the skin get clogged with a type of oil commonly referred to as sebum, that normally lubricates the skin and hair. Breakouts and acne are common during teenage years (puberty) when hormones go into overdrive, causing the skin to make too much sebum. Many oil-producing glands are on the forehead, nose and chin area, known to as the T- Zone, so this is where people are most prone to pimples. They can, however, occur anywhere on the face, back and chest area.

Here are 10 ways to help prevent breakouts and clear them up as fast as possible.

1. Getting a proper skincare routine with products prescribed for your skin condition is key.

2. Wash your face twice a day (no more) with warm water, gently massaging in circular motions. Too much washing and scrubbing can irritate the skin and worsen the condition instead of clearing it.

3. Please don’t pop your pimples. It’s tempting I know, but popping pimples can push the infection further into the skin, leading to more swelling and redness, spreading the bacteria and it can even cause scarring. If you notice a pimple coming before a big event your therapist can treat it for you with less risk of scarring or infection.

4. Avoid touching your face with your fingers. Touching

your face can spread the bacteria that cause pores to become inflamed and irritated. To keep bacteria at bay, wash your hands before applying anything to your face, such as treatment creams or makeup.

5. Take off your makeup before you go to sleep. When buying makeup, make sure you choose brands that say ‘noncomedogenic’ or ‘nonacnegenic’ on the label. Throw away old makeup that smells or looks different from when you bought it.

6. Keep hair clean and out of your face to prevent dirt and oil from clogging your pores.

7. Protect your skin from the sun.

8. Use a zinc supplement to help with healing and scaring.

9. Try Blue LED therapy or skin peeling.

10. Have a deep cleanse.

Fine Travel Destinations Otahuna Lodge

Healthy eating for your eyes in winter

As we begin substituting our morning routine of fresh smoothies on the deck while taking in the sunrise for a hot chocolate in the cold, it’s a great time to embrace winter coats and cosy socks. It’s also a great time to check in with our health and wellbeing.

At the age of 25, Pat lives in Fiji for two years and discovers her spiritual home, a place she returns to often. At age 40, Pat makes it to Egypt, which she dreamed of visiting as a girl. She goes to Venice for her 50th birthday and the following years are filled with more adventures around the globe.

This is a wonderful book of small, perfectly formed vignettes that capture each destination with a sense of place and a slice of the history from when Pat visited. She brings a great deal of curiosity to each of her stories, which are all laced with warm humour.

Tenancy agreements – why you need one

Negotiating a tenancy agreement can be a little overwhelming, however, understanding the obligations of both parties creates peace of mind and starts the landlord-tenant relationship off on the right foot.

A written, signed tenancy agreement is a legal requirement under the revised RTA from February 2021. This is a record of what the rental property owner and rental customer have agreed, and covers information about the property and specifics of the tenancy. The property owner or manager acting on their behalf and the rental customer need to sign the tenancy agreement and keep a copy. The tenancy agreement should be signed by the landlord or property manager before presenting it to the tenant to avoid a fine for failing to sign.

2. The address of the rental property.

3. The date the tenancy agreement is signed, the date the tenancy will start and the date the tenancy will end, if a fixed term has been agreed.

4. Confirmation of the tenant’s age – if they are under 18 years old.

5. The amount of the payable, frequency and due date and bank details for deposits.

6. A list of furniture, curtains and other fittings (chattels) provided.

A verbal offer implying you have entered into a tenancy agreement is also deemed to be a tenancy agreement.

However, in this case, the landlord could be prosecuted for failing to provide a signed, written agreement. A Tenancy Agreement (verbal or written) is a binding contract, so it’s important that everyone reads and agrees on key information.

7. An insulation statement and, from 1 December 2020, a separate statement from the landlord confirming the property insulation levels, type and condition in the walls, floor, and ceiling in compliance with the Healthy Homes Standards. (Healthy Homes Standards and insulation statements must also be included in any variation or renewal of any existing tenancy agreement.)

What information is included in a tenancy agreement?

8. An insurance statement from the owner to confirm insurance details covering careless damage caused by the tenant that includes the applicable excess or a statement that the property is not insured is required.

The Residential Tenancy Act requires that certain essential pieces of information are included in writing within a new tenancy agreement, including: 1. The full name and contact details, including address, mobile and email (if you have one) for the property owner and/ or property management company and tenant. The contact address of the tenant (if different from the rental premises) should also be included.

Local Asian Corner Manga to have a wide diversity of manga translated into our language. With a broad range of genres there is always something that fits our interest.

Manga is much more than just cute characters or fighting. I especially love to read manga about food and cooking (some are very educational!)

While there was never enough money to buy them all, manga cafe was a place we loved to hand around. All you needed to do was pay a small fee and buy a drink, then spend a day indulging in the sea of manga.

Surprisingly, when I unboxed some of hubby’s manga to show my boy, he was instantly stuck to them like a magnet. He cannot read any of the printed characters, but the drawings are enough to spark his interest. I started to throw him some of the popular ones to read.

Amazingly, we found the library has some of the manga we both love in English. Whoa, that was a life changing moment. I no longer need to translate to him (trust me, translating every single box of drawing and speaking bubble is a hard job), and he can finally read and understand everything in the book. We can start to talk about the scenes, the characters, the things that we like and dislike. These are the most joyful moments I’ve had lately.

There are a lot of joyful moments in every stage of parenting; their first laugh, their first step, but above all, I think being able to share what I love with them is probably the most joyful feeling in the world.

Recently, I found my boy loves to read manga. At first he borrowed some Pokemon from the library, then he started to read a few more. What he doesn’t know is that my husband and I have a good collection of manga, if only he could read our language.

Growing up in Asia, manga is almost a staple in one’s childhood. We are lucky

Use strawberry runners for new plants this season, grow hardy rocket for winter salads, protect citrus and other trees from frost. Cover the worm farm over winter.

Plant some fiery winter reds, get spring flowering bulbs in now and check out flowering camellia varieties. Rake the leaves up and check out NZ’s smallest kowhai.

• Lift strawberry runners and trim away from the parent plant – these can be planted in fresh Garden Mix to produce delicious strawberries in the summer season. Spread sheep pellets around the new plants.

• Camellias are a wonderful winter shrub, producing

• Stake or build supports around broad bean crops as they grow, because single plants can reach 1.5 – 1.7m high.

• Frost coming to the garden? Make shelters for young citrus, tamarillo plants and passionfruit vines. Frost cloth from the local garden centre is also a cheap and easy option, as is newspaper if you’re caught short one evening.

• Lift and trim the roots of mint plants, replanting with compost. Mint roots tend to take over garden beds and limit the growth of other plants and herbs.

Mint can be planted in an open-ended pot buried in the soil, away from other desirables.

• Cover worm farms for the winter as worms are sensitive to cold. Old carpet, blankets etc can add that extra layer of warmth.

• Time to clean out summer crops in the glasshouse and replace the soil.

• Small but rewarding: the dwarf Kowhai ‘Dragon’s Gold’ flowers now. It’s easily clipped as a shrub, hedge or topiary and it adds colour in winter.

Similarly, the pacific Metrosideros ‘Tahiti’ is a shrub to 1.5m and its red flowers are spectacular.

• Showy winter red shades include red stemmed dogwoods and the coral bark maple. Early flowering Magnolia ‘Vulcan’ is a stunner and Camellia ‘Takanini’ has a long flowering period. At ground level plum coloured hellebore flowers and Azalea ‘Ward’s Ruby’ are stunning.

• In Auckland it’s not too late to plant any winter

bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths. Our warm climate means the soil is only just beginning to cool down now. If growing them in pots, plant in Garden Mix.

• Rake fallen leaves off the lawn. Leaving them kills off grass creating muddy areas.

Youth theatre off to see the Wizard

Multiple generations have been enchanted by The Wizard of Oz, and locals of all ages will get the chance to be transported again when a youth version of the show lands in town for a limited season.

Run by Theatre Company Ardent Performing Arts, Director Linda Marais is delighted to be able to get primary to high school youngsters back into acting.

‘COVID-19 has been hard on kids,’ she says. ‘We wanted to get young people back into engaging with each other and the wider community through something timeless and fun.’

The Wizard of Oz was an easy choice. ‘It’s such a classic and the whole theme of the story, that ‘there’s no place like home’, is a great way to learn appreciation for what we already have,’ says Marais. ‘A perfect message for these times.’

Getting together in groups again is just one of the many

benefits of youth theatre, which includes increased confidence, more self-respect and exposure to different points of view every time they step into a new character’s shoes.

Kids who participate in drama often do better at school in all subjects and build lifelong skills that will benefit them in adulthood.

The Wizard of Oz performers are aged from six years old and Marais has seen so many of them blossom through the rehearsal process.

‘You can see them contributing more to the creative process as we progress,’ she says. ‘Young people don’t realise how much they’ve got to give and how much they will gain.’

Do you enjoy or endure winter? disconnection, disappointment or disbanded dreams.

Acknowledging a time as a ‘harsh winter life experience’ may not lessen discomfort, but can ease the fear of permanence.

Spring always follows winter.

We are currently navigating winter in New Zealand. If the weather is negatively impacting your wellbeing, position yourself in the presence of something uplifting or enjoyable.

Connect with someone you have fun with, immerse yourself in nature, play with a baby, cuddle a pet, toast marshmallows over a fire, jump in puddles, dance, sing, paint… Give yourself permission to be, do and have what works for you.

For some, the winter season heralds participation in winter sports or throwing snowballs. For others, it’s boarding a plane or cruise ship and travelling to warmer climates. My favourite place on a cold winter’s day is beside a roaring fire, sipping a favourite drink and getting immersed in a good book.

Winter, like each season, has an important process to complete.

Autumn is the time for discarding what is depleting the life source of a tree while winter is the time of replenishment. The decomposing stage of fallen leaves is the preparation stage for the new leaves of spring. The tree rejuvenates during these months but the process is not evident until new buds appear.

Spring will always follow winter – such is the cycle of the seasons. Our life progresses through seasons, also.

A winter season requires extra measures for maintaining good health. Lack of sunlight disrupts our internal body clock and can impact our well-being. Similarly, loss and grief in our lives can feel bleak as a rainy wintry day and requires extra kindness to our mind, body and soul.

Local Recipes Mussels with tomato, thyme and chorizo broth Serves 3-4 Work on 500gm to 1kg of mussels per person

Ingredients ¼ cup light olive oil 1 large onion, finely chopped 6 cloves garlic, finely chopped 3 Tbsp chopped fresh Italian parsley 150ml white wine 1 cup canned chopped tomatoes, drained 5g fresh picked thyme 2 spicy chorizo sausages 1 red chili, finely chopped 2kg mussels, cleaned and debearded fresh-ground black pepper and salt garlic bread or warm buttered crusty bread

Method

1. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, heat half the oil over a medium heat. Add chopped chorizo and sauté until slightly

coloured, then remove from the pan. In the same pan cook onion and garlic, stirring occasionally until onion is translucent, about 5 minutes. Add white wine and reduce by half. Stir in tomatoes, thyme and fresh chili. Reduce heat and simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

2. Clean the shell of each mussel using a blunt knife removing any barnacles and wash well. Add the mussels to the pot.

Cover with a tight-fitting lid and bring to a boil. Cook, shaking the pot occasionally, just until mussels open, about 3 minutes.

Remove the open mussels. Continue to boil, uncovering the pot as necessary to remove the mussels as soon as their shells open. Discard any that do not open.

3. Stir the black pepper, crisp chorizo and chopped Italian parsley into the broth. Taste the broth and, if needed, add salt.

Ladle the broth over the mussels and serve with garlic toast or crusty bread.

With the price of everything going up at the moment, don’t forget the humble mussel is less than $5.00 per kilo at most local supermarkets. It’s a great source of protein, vitamins and minerals, including iron and Vitamin C. The kids may take a while to get use to them but my kids love them and they’re great pre-cooked, removed from the shell and served in pasta or rice dishes.

Lamb Curry Ingredients 1 Silver Fern Farms Lamb Leg Roast, cut into 2.5-3cm pieces

Method

1 tablespoon oil

Heat oil in a heavy-based saucepan over a low heat and add onion, garlic and ginger and cook until the onion is soft, about 10 minutes.

1 onion, finely chopped

Add spices and cook until fragrant.

3 cloves garlic, crushed

Add tomato paste and lamb and stir to coat lamb in the spices.

2.5cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated

Pour in the water and bring up to the boil (lamb should just be covered in liquid), cover and reduce heat to low and simmer until the lamb is tender, 60-70 minutes.

4 cardamom pods 2 star anise 1 tablespoon mild curry powder 1 teaspoon ground coriander

Season with salt and sugar and, if wished, stir through some mango chutney.

To serve:

1 teaspoon ground cumin

Serve with naan or roti bread, rice, mango chutney and fresh coriander.

1 teaspoon garam masala

Serves: 4 for shared plate dining.

3-4 tablespoons tomato paste

Preparation time: 20 minutes (plus cooking time for the lamb).

Hibiscus Coast Society of Genealogists A visit from The Waipu Museum material, with visits to Waipu being planned as a result.

The Waipu Museum is open 7 days each week from 10am to 4pm, closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day. Museum genealogy experts also provide research assistance for Scottish ancestry.

The Hibiscus Coast branch of the NZ Society of Genealogists holds meetings at St Chad’s Church, Centreway Dr, Orewa on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 2pm. Visitors always welcome. Orewa locals may have noticed a strange noise coming from the St Chad’s Church grounds last Tuesday, where a tartan-clad bagpiper welcomed visitors to the monthly meeting of the Hibiscus Coast branch of the NZ Society of Genealogists.

The meeting’s Scottish theme was in honour of visiting staff from the Waipu Historical Museum, who presented on the emigration of Scottish ancestors who settled in Waipu. The wealth of information and details of the historic buildings on the Waipu site was inspiring.

More than 65 members of the Hibiscus Coast branch attended the meeting, with several remote visitors by Zoom. Many family history links were discussed over a Scottish-focused afternoon tea of Dundee cake, Scottish shortbread and Empire biscuits. Much of the focus of discussion was prompted by the Scottish presentation
