Getting to Know Mr Gregory Pierce

Living as we do in a place of considerable development and growth, it’s common to hear conversations about current developments and the changes they bring – grassy hills growing streets and houses, new shops and cafes opening their doors and motorway off-ramps with turning lanes to places that never used to exist. What will this area look like long after the last Millwater and Milldale contractors have packed up their final drop sheets?

As well as construction already underway, there are those projects you heard of long ago, passed down to new friends and neighbours over coffee cups and whisky – a kayak ramp and club rooms at the Millwater Sports Grounds, another pedestrian bridge over the estuary, a Curley Ave extension to Bunnings and Pak’n’Save. Which legendary projects will come to fruition and help shape our local future?

In March, as the world marked the 10th anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan and tsunami warnings here in New Zealand saw thousands evacuated to higher ground, it brought home that nature can also bring about change. The Orewa Seawall is one example of this. I wonder what other physical forces over the next few decades could affect the future of the Coast?

The world we live in is dynamic. Even without the current construction and development our community would still be constantly changing, just in different ways. I look forward to being both bystander and occasional participant in the process.

Fishing Spot The mornings are getting darker, the evenings shorter, and the water is now starting to cool down. April will see the last of the gamefish in our waters, the scallop season behind us and some of the best snapper fishing of the year.

Change of light is the best time to capitalise on this season. The shorter days mean you don’t have to get out of bed so early to chase the sunrise and it’s well worth the effort for a 5am start. You will have your limit of snapper before 9am leaving plenty of time for a dive or live baiting for kingfish and John Dory.

Evening fishing is perfect for anchoring up and throwing big baits out the back while the sun goes down.

March was a difficult month to get out on the water with the two COVID-19 lockdowns restricting fishing for us again. Once we were out of lockdown, we also had to contend with busy boat ramps with the America’s Cup racing. For us, this meant only one short trip out and even then, it was a last minute decision on a Sunday afternoon and we all know how tough that is washing down and cleaning up on a Sunday night before work the next day.

We left from Omaha to avoid the queues down here and headed out to the middle ground to drift in 50m east of Kawau. Two long drifts produced about a dozen fish for the bin before we headed to the north channel of Kawau Island. We realised we hadn’t packed any strayline gear on the boat, so we decided to drift the incoming tide from Maori Rock into the north channel towards Jones Bay. We actually did quite well in there, landing some good specimens to finish the evening off. It was great to get out on the water even though it was a short mission.

The bite times over Easter look great both at

dawn and dusk on Saturday and Sunday (5am to 7am and 5pm to 7pm). Make sure you get out there and enjoy some fishing over the long weekend. Until next month – tight lines!

Getting to Know You – Mr Gregory Pierce New Principal of Orewa College relationships with the students and staff.’

When thinking about the responsibilities of being a principle, running a school and getting to know 2000 students, you would wonder if Mr Pierce has time to do anything else, but as well as these school commitments he also has a wife and two children at home who keep him busy and balanced.

Outside of school you are most likely going to spot our new Principal in the outdoors! When Mr Pierce was younger he used to be involved in a lot of sports including cricket, rugby and basketball. His involvement with sports didn’t end there, as he went on to coaching and managing sports teams as well. Mr Pierce said that he really enjoys the co-curricular aspect of school, whether it is sports, culture, drama or music saying, ‘I think it’s really important that students are given those opportunities.’

If it wasn’t for COVID-19, during school holidays Mr Pierce would most likely be on a plane travelling when possible and getting to experience lots of different cultures around the world.

For this month’s issue I had the pleasure of talking with the new principal of Orewa College, Mr Gregory Pierce. Prior to taking on the role at Orewa College, Mr Pierce worked at Aorere College. Living further north has been something quite different for him. Mr Pierce explained by saying ‘The culture on the Hibiscus Coast is unique and it is going to take a little adjustment because I came from a different context and community.’

Orewa College is an amazing school filled with approximately 2000 students and 150 staff, so it is no surprise that Mr Pierce has wanted to take some time to get to know the students and staff. He has done this by getting involved with the cocurriculum activities at the school as well as taking part in Orewa College’s school house system competitions, such as tug of war where he helped out his house, McLaren.

Around the school and within the community Mr Pierce has been putting out questionnaire surveys for students, staff, the board of trustees and also parents and community members ‘for feedback on what they perceive the college is doing really well and what they perceive to be the current challenges and areas to work on for the college’. His engagement, even with the lockdown disruptions, already seems to be paying off because teachers and students have described him as doing really well, saying, ‘It’s obvious that he is making an effort to build

For now, the new principal at Orewa College is going to spend his year understanding and getting to know the students, staff and this amazing community we are a part of. For this year, Mr Pierce said ‘The focus on and acknowledgement of being culturally responsive, in practice I think is well established at the college. Both staff and students realise it needs to be an ongoing area of focus, to keep on developing and improving.’ His other focus is on having clarity and a better understanding of the school by the end of the year.

Mr Gregory Pierce has made an amazing start at getting involved with his students and community and it is safe to say he is already filling the big shoes that were left by Kate Shevland.

One thing that struck me when I was talking with Mr Pierce was that he said, ‘we can always do something better tomorrow than we can do today.’

Good Luck Mr Pierce with the many years ahead of you as principle of Orewa College. We all look forward to seeing what else you can bring to the table.

Vet Speak Helping our pets adjust to cooler weather are very subtle and hard to pick up, we usually brush them off as just ‘old age’ but as the cooler weather approaches these symptoms may start to be noticed. If you are concerned please pop them in to the clinic or think about a ‘Senior Surfer’.

Our ‘Senior Surfer’ programme is a comprehensive wellness check of your pet that includes full blood tests, urine tests and a screening x-ray to check for arthritis and general health. We provide a full report on discharge along with any recommendations for preventative healthcare or indeed treatment if indicated.

As summer begins to leave us and it feels like autumn in the air we need to remember our pets feel it too. We need to help our pets adjust to the changing weather and keep them comfortable.

It is a good time to check the outdoor kennels and shelters for weather tightness, are they draft free and dry? Do they need a blanket or extra bedding in their kennels? Maybe they could be moved inside overnight? These things seem so simple but can have a huge impact on our pets. It can also help manage other conditions such as arthritis.

Are they getting slower in the morning? Are they having difficulties jumping or getting up? Are they less inclined to play? Sometimes the symptoms of arthritis

Lastly, as it gets cooler, rodents move inside and if you are laying bait, it’s important to keep any rat baits or poisons laid out of our pets’ reach.

Dogs especially are inquisitive and eat things they shouldn’t. If you think your pet has eaten bait or a poisoned rodent please give us a call to discuss the options.

There’s a new Law Firm in town and it’s being noticed

Richard Worker has lived and worked on the Hibiscus Coast for almost 20 years and in that time has served the community, being the ‘go to’ lawyer for Age Concern Rodney. He is also on the board of Destination Orewa Beach. He loves living in Millwater and is looking forward to serving the local community.

Other locals who contributed to this prestigious office are Withers and Borwick, Tahi Electrical, Clare Chapman from Hello Darling, Coastal Carpet Installations and Silverdale Landscape Services Ltd.

Millwater ROWENAs

Once again, we were very fortunate to be able to enjoy our monthly lunch outing before we went into lockdown on the 28th February.

There were 11 ladies present and we visited the recently opened Jacaranda Cafe in Tamariki Avenue, Orewa. The table that had been set up for us was a delight; the covering was a lovely lace cloth with a beautiful vase of peonies on the table (even though they were artificial they brought a lovely ray of sunshine to the day).

The lunch was delicious and everyone was very happy with

their choice – I can definitely recommend the Island Fish Cakes. The staff were very friendly and attentive.

The conversation as usual flowed well. We were delighted to welcome one new ROWENA, Judy, to the group – and, lo and behold, it turned out that she was a familiar face to one of our existing members, Sue. Sue’s husband and Judy’s husband had worked together at a bank in Wellington many years ago. It then turned out that our other most recent member, Elizabeth, knows a friend of the daughter of Diane, another of our ROWENAs. It just goes to show what a small world we live in!

Eco Tip of the Month

As we hop into Easter, let’s use our purchasing power to influence the world and its practices for the better.

Do you really want to buy your children chocolate eggs that were manufactured by trafficking, enslaving and beating children to enforce them to work 12-hour days and subjecting them to hazardous agricultural chemicals? Companies that use fairly traded cocoa are avoiding this by ensuring farmers are paid a high enough wage to support their families and send their children to school rather than enlisting them in child labour.

For environmental reasons, we should also avoid cocoa from farms that have been converted from rainforests or any chocolate containing unsustainable palm oil. Guides for recommended brands can be found at https://www. consumer.org.nz/articles/ethical-cocoa-can-you-reallybuy-guilt-free-chocolate and https://justkai.org.nz/guides/ cocoa/#chocolate-sweets. In brief, go for products with the Fairtrade, WFTO, UTZ or Rainforest Alliance logo on them, such as Trade Aid, Green and Blacks, Bennetto and most Whittaker’s and Nestlé products. Samoan chocolate is also known for its sustainable and fair practices while Cadbury rates poorly because it has its own self-appointed scheme that isn’t as robust or transparent.

Needless to say, I would encourage you to avoid Easter

treats wrapped in plastic (foil wrapping is preferable which can be rolled into a ball and recycled) or just avoid Easter consumerism in general due to all the packaging involved and focus on sustainable family traditions instead. A neat activity is to break a small amount off the top of a free-range egg and empty its contents (don’t waste the egg use it for lunch!). Then rinse out the shell and carefully fill it with collected flowers and leaves or even a small toy. Next, fill it with water and freeze overnight and then peel the shell off to reveal your amazing ice egg creation!

Blue Zones The Okinawans’ have the saying ‘hara hachi bu’, which means ‘eat until you are 80% full’. It takes about 20 minutes for the hormonal message that we are full to reach our brains. If we eat slowly and stop before we are 100% full, it helps to prevent us consuming more calories than we need and thereby helps with maintaining a healthy weight.

Maintaining a healthy weight is a key preventative strategy in avoiding the most common lifestyle-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and certain forms of cancer.

There are certain regions in the world where people have much lower rates of chronic disease and live longer, healthier lifespans than the average. They are known as Blue Zones.

The Blue Zones include Sardinia (Italy) where a substantial proportion reach the age of 100, Seventh-Day Adventists in Loma Linda, California (USA), Okinawa (Japan), Nicoya (Costa Rica) and Icaria (Greece) where one out of every three people make it into their 90s, they have 50% lower rates of heart disease, 20% lower rates of cancer and dementia is almost unheard of.

These zones were discovered by demographers working for National Geographic in 2005. The demographers identified some key things that people living in these zones do on a regular basis, including:

Art Speak If you can’t travel to Bali then Bali will come to us Estuary Arts is thrilled to be hosting a brand new set of exhibitions in April.

View new paintings by Catherine Mitchell and Diane Taylor in the foyer space, and in the whole of the downstairs gallery view a range of upcycled funky furniture, sculpture, homeware, macrame and more.

We in NZ are fortunate in more ways than we can imagine. While so many of our family members and friends abroad are still living in COVID-19 lockdowns, we have enjoyed a relatively carefree Kiwi summer. Sure we can’t travel abroad but we can travel locally in our gorgeous country.

We can also work with charities such as the Kindness Project to bring diversity to our gallery. In April we are pleased to host Kindness Furniture, who will bring a bit of Bali magic to our galleries.

Kim Boyd, curator at Estuary Arts, talks to founder of Kindness Furniture, Gary Parkinson: What is Kindness Furniture? Kindness Furniture was born out of travels to Bali and falling in love with the authentic handmade range of furniture and homewares. I was looking for a new direction where business could be a force for good! Enabling and empowering others with the motivation that what was offered was kind for the planet also. Hence the name!

Where is the furniture made? The Balinese people are gentle, humble, caring, very skilled in crafting natural materials and recycling what’s available. Best time to plant trees and shrubs

April is all about soil replenishment and nourishment ahead of winter vegetable gardening. Traditionally it’s time to plant hardy brassicas, carrots, and herbs and to sow a crop of Broad Beans. Green crops are good for bare areas. Sowing lawns will be easier now there’s some rain.

With the soil still being warm it’s a great time to plant trees and shrubs.

Dig the hole twice the width of the root ball, loosening the soil at bottom.

• Replenish the soil after summer crops have been removed. For bulk, add Garden Mix or dig in compost, for nutrients add sheep pellets or Organic Boost, a granular fertiliser

• Nature’s planting time – the soil is still warm and

Millwater ROMEOs We arrived at our destination via the North Shore Busway for our 10:30am tour. After scanning COVID QR codes and logging in, we were given an introduction by one of the delightful hostesses in the Wind Tunnel. Using Spark 5G technology, this visualised the real-time wind and could be changed for several coastal locations around Greater Auckland.

Next, we saw a map of the different race courses projected onto the floor, showing how wind direction affects the choice by the race director. Team NZ has an exclusive contract with NIWA for this historical and real-time information.

There was a great visual surround theatre showing their earlier boat ‘Te Aihe’ (The Dolphin) in action on the water. We also had a chance to meet the team virtually and have augmented reality (AR) photos with the cup and crew. Other interactive exhibits were Boat Builder, Spark 5G Portal – and the amazing AC75 Simulator, where you can attempt to sail these hightech boats, trying not to tip them over.

For the March outing of the Millwater ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out), eleven members took a timely visit to the ‘Spark 5G Race Zone’ at the Emirates Team New Zealand base on the Viaduct Basin in Auckland.

After our hour was up, and having narrowly missed a downpour, we walked to O’Hagan’s Pub for a pint or two of Guinness, and to enjoy one of the best pub lunches in town.

Then it was back on the bus to the Hibiscus Station, from where our ROMEO drivers delivered everyone back home safe and sound.

Just for Men – Living with Prostate Cancer

A new specialist fitness class for men living with prostate cancer has been started in Stanmore Bay on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.

The Prost-FIT exercise group is one of only seven such classes throughout New Zealand and is the only one being held anywhere north of Auckland’s North Shore.

A pilot programme for 8-10 prostate cancer patients drawn from the PCFNZ Support Group network was started in Christchurch in 2018. It proved successful and these classes are still going strong today with about 20 men participating each week.

Research shows exercise is an effective medicine for men with prostate cancer. Men with prostate cancer who exercise regularly have fewer and milder side effects from their treatments, particularly hormone treatment for advanced disease. This includes feeling less tired and distressed, being better able to continue normal activities and feeling better

about their quality of life.

Group trainer Lis MacLeod says research shows that exercise can increase cancer survival rates by as much as 60 percent and the classes will benefit men at any stage of diagnosis or treatment.

Sessions feature tailored activities including cardio, resistance and ball skills to help to improve men’s overall strength, balance and stamina.

The Prost-FIT class runs every Tuesday from 9.15am to 10.15am in the Stanmore Bay Community Hall at 41 Waiora Road, followed by coffee at the Beans N Bites cafe in Whangaparaoa.

Each session costs $10, though the first class is free and there is funding available for anyone unable to pay.

Property Talk Well another month has passed by and still the local market is struggling to get underway from its summer holiday hiatus.

Yes, there have been a small smattering of sales over the last couple of months and yes, those sales have been at generally high prices, but the market is still operating below normal and well below peak turnover levels.

Interestingly we have now seen two months in a row with Millwater recording its highest ever median sales price, although this may be somewhat distorted by the relatively low volume of sales. More importantly, we have seen the rolling 12 month average sail past the previous highs. This means that we have now eclipsed the previous high points of 2016 and 2018 and it is likely, given the current drought of property for sale, that we will see these numbers go higher still this year.

Milldale also goes from strength to strength, with it too achieving its highest rolling average sales price to date on the basis of strong sales numbers, despite the shortage of property for sale. Sales volumes for Milldale will come and go with the release of sections and history has shown that the developer manages supply to avoid flooding the market, so we expect these volumes to stabilise at moderate levels.

So, with low stock numbers locally and nationally, we are seeing buying options for would-be sellers as very limited.

The options for upgrading in the local market are difficult with the very high prices being achieved and with regional

markets experiencing high price increases also, the options for selling here and moving out of Auckland are looking less and less attractive. This lack of options is creating something of a stalemate in the local market, with would-be sellers unable to source a buying option and often making the decision to do nothing rather than risk ending up without a house. As an aside, last month’s article suggests ways to get around this conundrum and it can be found online.

The latest announcements by government around reducing investor involvement in the market have certainly indicated their intent, even if the outcomes are still to be determined.

At first glance there are three significant elements that may impact our local market. The increase in the Brightline test to ten years will certainly make many would-be investors reconsider this option, as the tax on sale profits will often make the whole undertaking less viable. The second significant issue for would-be and existing investors is removing the deductibility of interest expense. This could be huge for many current investors who have highly leveraged property and rely on the tax benefit (primarily through interest deductibility) to make the investments viable. The third element is that neither of these changes apply to new build property, the Brightline test will remain at five years and there is no detail around interest deductibility at time of writing. It would be sensible to predict that this deductibility will be reduced over the years – the detail here could be very important.

So what does this all mean locally? We can see that investor interest in existing houses will now be reduced, only those looking at very long term investments who have a large portion of the purchase price in cash are likely to be shopping for existing property. This may vary a bit depending on the investors personal requirements but new builds are likely to be a far more attractive option. We are also likely to see some sell-off of existing investment property, particularly where the vendors are highly leveraged. It is quite possible the local stock of rental properties will reduce over the coming years, likely forcing rents up further. We are also expecting areas with significant new builds like Milldale to experience even higher investor interest. What impact all this has on local property prices and turnover numbers is going to take time to establish.

There are likely to be some interesting side effects, such as investors choosing to move more wealth to their family home, potentially pushing up the top end of the local market. The announcement that a National government would reverse these changes might make some investors consider whether they can hold out and bet on a change in government in 2023.

So short term, we expect to see an immediate increase in investor purchasing in Milldale with an equally immediate reduction of investors buying in Millwater. There is likely to be some knee jerk selling of investment properties, but this will be a small number as most have existing tenancies in place, restricting the ability to sell.

Over the medium term then, say July through December, in Millwater we are expecting demand to slow at the lower price points, while at the same time more current owners, particularly

investors, will want to bank their gains and sell. Neither this decrease in demand nor the increase in supply will likely be large enough to cause decreases in prices, however, we would anticipate a slowing of the pace of increases over the year followed by another couple of years of stagnant pricing and more difficult selling conditions. In Milldale, we would expect even more competition for all available properties, potentially pushing first home buyers out of that market also.

The longer term implications will depend almost entirely on political party popularity in 2022 and 2023. If a change of government is likely then it is quite possible all these changes will mean nothing. Investors will hold off selling existing property until they know the outcome of the election. If it is possible these changes will be retained by the government then you will start to see something of a transformation in the real estate market throughout New Zealand, with a general shift away from residential investment, supply finally increasing and more generational stability in pricing.

The recent Auckland cases of community spread were from people who were unaware that they were contagious.

What, then, entitles us to assume that we are not? The many Aucklanders who fled town in the night before the latest alert level three may have thought they were not taking the virus with them. But could they be sure?

In the interests of those around us I hope we all do what we can to prevent the spread of COVID-19. That includes using contact tracing methods, even if we think we know better than the professionals who are trying to contain its spread.

Twice New Zealand has been lifted into COVID-19 Alert level two and twice we have dropped back to level one. This has been rather painless for most of the country compared with the higher level three restrictions imposed on Auckland.

Dried Herbs, Spices and Fresh Herbs by Culinary Lane Most authentic Indian recipes would require the spices to be ground from their whole form as required so as to get the maximum flavour and colour from them. When using dried spices such as paprika, coriander, cumin and similar spices, toast them in a dry hot frypan first, stirring constantly as this will allow the oils to be released and intensify the flavours when used in your dishes.

Where possible try to use fresh herbs over dried. The difference between fresh coriander, thyme, rosemary, chives, parsley, basil, dill, bay leaves, cinnamon, oregano etc is chalk and cheese with the fresh herbs having a far superior flavour and colour. What you can do is buy larger batches of fresh herbs, remove them from the stalk and place in small airtight containers in the freezer and add them to your dishes directly from the freezer as this suspends the aging of the herbs. Chop the leafy herbs first as they will keep better in the freezer in a smaller form.

I’m sure we all have dried herbs and spices in our pantry that we don’t know how old they are. I’m sure you would be surprised to see the age of some of them are years old and you just haven’t thought of throwing them away.

Dried herbs and spices don’t truly expire or ‘go bad’ in the traditional sense. When a spice is said to have gone bad, it simply means that it has lost most of its flavour, potency and colour, which happens due to its age since packaging.

Dried spices last approximately one year and dried herbs around two to three years if kept correctly. The best way to store them is in an airtight container, in a dark and dry area, like a pantry. When you use dried herbs and spices that are past their use by date, they won’t add the punch of flavour and colour that is required to make your recipes and meals as flavoursome and appealing to the eye as possible.

Mindful Self-observation for Post-COVID-19 Blues Observe your body Our body is a mirror of our mind (and our mind is a mirror of our body!). Whenever you sit down or stand up or walk, notice how your body feels. If it is tense, take a deep breath and relax. The more tension there is in your body, the more tension there will be in your mind. A relaxed body thinks more clearly, responds more healthily and bounces back more easily from stressful situations.

Observe your feelings Notice your emotions and allow yourself to feel what you feel, instead of trying to reject it. Unpleasant feelings are a part of you as much as the pleasant ones are, and they’re all meant to be felt – even anger and despair – because that’s how you receive the vital information they bring. Aim to accept all your feelings – even if they don’t seem logical – and be curious about why you are feeling them.

Observe your social patterns

New Zealand may have been spared the extended periods of COVID-19 restrictions that some countries are having, but it is very apparent that the pandemic has taken a toll on Kiwis too. Even though we’ve had few cases in our own community, what the pandemic has done everywhere is bring a LOT of uncertainty about some pretty fundamental things like our own health, our livelihood, our financial future and the sort of world we’ll be living in from now on. And of course, we have had a lot of uncertainty about day-to-day things like ‘Shall I book a holiday?’ and ‘Are the kids getting enough schooling?’

Now that we are 12 months down the pandemic track, if you are feeling tired, frustrated, sad or anxious and generally ‘over it’, it is not just you. ‘Pandemic fatigue’ is a new term that is starting to be used to describe the very real feelings of stress and exhaustion stemming from the day-to-day effects of living through this event. People are reporting changed sleeping or eating patterns, feeling on edge, having a shorter fuse and being stressed by tasks (and emotions) that they used to manage well.

So, how can the mindfulness skill of self–observation help identify and manage pandemic fatigue?

Observe your thoughts We are not our thoughts, but our thoughts can massively influence us if we allow them to. Frenzied thoughts and worrying are signs of stress and generally result in knee–jerk reactions rather than helpful responses. Look at your thoughts without judgement and if they are anxious, ask yourself: Is this true? How likely is this to happen? Is this worry because I feel powerless to change anything? What can I do right now that will help me feel better? What plan can I make to deal with this if it happens? Aim to be an accurate thinker instead of an anxious thinker.

Notice if you have been reaching out to friends or family or if you have started isolating yourself. There’s a difference between deliberate healthy quiet time where you just sit in silence without distractions for 10 minutes and hiding away because you don’t want other people to see that you are feeling crappy. One proven approach that will help you feel better is to connect regularly in a meaningful way with other people, such as through a community project or group activity (even if it’s online).

Observe the expectations you have of yourself Don’t force yourself to be happy or stay on top of everything all the time (and notice if you unwittingly expect yourself to be a super–person). If you have been COVID-19-stressed for some time, continuing to push yourself to do more will only make the fatigue worse. Allow yourself to be less than perfect and make mistakes. Allow yourself to not have all the answers and not be at maximum output. There is great value in being considerate and compassionate towards yourself because it helps the body and mind to return to a better state, from where you can then make a healthy reassessment of priorities.

Observe where you spend your day The stress-relieving effects of being outside and sleeping enough have been proven over and over. Notice if you are spending all your time inside – including inside a car – and make it a priority to have contact with nature every day and eight hours in bed every night.

And remember these truths: nothing lasts forever; this thing that is so hard right now will pass. And however you are feeling, don’t judge yourself for craving relief.

A guide to Enduring Powers of Attorney As part of planning your personal affairs, you might consider signing an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA).

An EPA gives someone you trust (your attorney) the power to make decisions on your behalf regarding your personal care and welfare, and/or property.

When should I get an EPA? Some people believe it is only relevant to put an EPA in place when you are older. However, this is not necessarily the case. For example, what if you had an accident or health issue and were in a coma?

If you are in a state where you are not able to make decisions for yourself, including a loss of mental capacity, and you have no EPA in place, a relative or other representative will need to apply to the court to be appointed as your property manager or welfare guardian. This can be a costly, time consuming process at an emotional time.

When do EPAs come into effect?

EPAs normally become effective when you lose mental capacity – many clients tend to choose this option. In some cases, for example in relation to your property, you can elect to have the EPA come into effect immediately.

If your EPA records that it is effective from when you lose mental capacity, your attorney can only act if your doctor or the family court has declared you mentally incapable.

The authority of your attorney(s) to act

comes to an end when you pass away, or when your attorney(s) are no longer able to fulfil their duties, by court order or if you cancel or suspend your EPA and revoke their power to act.

The importance of a timely ‘warrant of fitness’ insurance review A case study suggesting that as the family’s circumstances would have changed after nine years, it was very timely to undertake a review.

They agreed wholeheartedly, as after nine years their financial position had changed dramatically, now that: • both parents were earning good, full-time incomes • the children were aged 21 and 18 • the mortgage had been dramatically reduced Whereas nine years ago they required the shortest wait period available (four weeks) and the longest benefit payment period (to age 65) for the mortgage protection cover, they were now happy to switch to a 13-week wait and a five-year benefit payment period. With the reduced outstanding mortgage and the children now virtually independent, my client’s life cover could also be reduced.

A ‘warrant of fitness’ insurance review I recently undertook highlighted the value of such an important exercise.

I put a client’s insurances in place in 2012, when: • he was the sole income earner • he and his wife had taken out a substantial mortgage • his wife was not earning income • their two children were aged nine and six Given these circumstances, my client required substantial life, trauma, mortgage protection and medical cover to ensure that in the event of incapacitation and inability to earn income, or premature death, the family would be securely protected.

Each successive year, I routinely contacted my client to see if they wished to review their cover. Each time they were happy to let things run as they were. However, after the ninth policy anniversary notice in January 2021 I contacted my client, noting that the premium was starting to get quite expensive and

At the same time they made use of their existing Future Insurability Benefit, which allowed them to increase the trauma cover without the need for a full application or medical underwriting.

The net result: a saving of $200 per month, $2,400 per year – money best in the client’s pocket – while still having an excellent protection plan which is now suited to their current needs.

You are what you eat

soy products. Pak choy, daikon and Chinese cabbage. There was also loads of rice, miso and all the little bottles of sauces she had never seen.

I remembered this incident while in the boredom of lockdown. Out of curiosity I opened up my kitchen drawers and realised if my friend had also opened my drawer that day, she would probably have found its contents quite interesting too.

Besides spoons, forks and other common utensils, I also have a set of handmade utensils made specially for dipping ingredients into a hot pot. We have forks designed solely to dig out crab meat from crab legs. There’s a wasabi grater made from wood and shark skin, a utensil made precisely for spooning up tofu and countless pairs of different kinds of chopsticks, in different lengths for different occasions.

While our wardrobe contents may be more or less the same, I guess ‘you are what you eat.’

When we were young my brother suggested that we were living in a tri-cultural world; a Kiwi one, a Chinese one and a third one that is a blend of both cultures in order for us to feel comforted and contained. There was a balance between each one and it took us some time to find that balance.

A while ago a kiwi friend came to my house for morning tea.

When the coffee was prepared I asked her to help herself to milk from the fridge. When she swung the door open she shouted with amusement ‘Oh, your fridge looks very different to mine – I mean the contents of it.’ Then she started to study what was inside my fridge that she doesn’t have. It felt like she was looking at an x-ray of what’s actually inside me, which was a bit embarrassing!

Millwater Recipes Crispy Pork Chop Ingredients 1 pork fillet, cut into 1cm thick slices 1 egg 1/2 cup standard flour breadcrumbs cabbage – cut into thin strips Japanese mayo Marinade sauce: 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil

2. In a bowl, whisk eggs with a bit of salt.

3. Put flour and breadcrumbs on separate shallow plates.

4. One by one, lightly roll pork slices in flour before dipping in egg, then roll in breadcrumbs.

5. In a saucepan, heat up oil then carefully line up pork slices – do not overlap.

6. On a medium heat, cover with lid for 1 minute, remove lid and check the colour of bottom side. Fry until colour becomes brown.

7. Turn to the other side and continue frying till brown.

8. Serve on a bed of cabbage with mayo.

Mark’s Chicken Tikka Masala Ingredients Marinade: 1kg x skinless chicken breast or boneless thigh 2-3cm diced 80gms x tandoori paste 60gms x natural yoghurt 30gms x finely chopped garlic 30gms x finely chopped ginger Sauce: 30mls x canola oil 40gms x butter 20gms x finely chopped garlic 20gms x finely chopped ginger 2tsp x hot curry powder ½ tsp x red chilli flakes 8 x crushed cardamom pods ½ tsp x fenugreek 1 x cinnamon stick 1 tsp x cumin powder 1 tsp x coriander powder ½ tsp x turmeric powder 3 x medium finely sliced onions 20gms x coriander stalk sliced 50gms x tandoori paste

3 x finely sliced red capsicums 200mls x water and Vegeta stock powder 200mls x cream 1 x tin chopped tomatoes 30gm x caster sugar salt 20gms x fresh coriander leaves

Method Place the diced chicken in a bowl and mix in the garlic, ginger, yoghurt and first measure of tandoori paste. Glad wrap and refrigerate overnight. You can use after 2 hours.

Place the marinated chicken onto a tray with greaseproof paper and put into a 190C preheated oven for 15-17 minutes.

Remove from the oven and place the chicken in a strainer but keeping all the juice that runs off.

In a heavy-bottomed large saucepan on a medium heat, melt the butter and canola oil. Add the garlic and ginger and sweat for 1 minute. Add all of the spices and cook for a further 2-3 minutes to release their flavours. Add the onions, coriander stalks and sweat until soft, around 5 minutes. Add the tandoori paste and sliced capsicums and sweat for 1 minute. Finish with the juice from the chicken, diced tomatoes, cream, sugar, water and Vegeta. Simmer for 10-15 minutes. Then add the chicken and chopped coriander and bring to the boil.

This musical tells the story of real heroes who had to face difficult choices in a world where the state had ultimate power and personal life decisions had dire consequences. Our story happens in 203AD, allowing us to step back in time and, through the performing arts, have a glimpse of how life was and experience, to some extent, what they went through.

These were the heroes of 203AD and they were UNBREAKABLE.

Unbreakable is an original work that will be staged at the Centrestage Theatre in Orewa from 8–15 May 2021, with music, costumes, props and songs you will remember for years to come.

Despite setbacks experienced with COVID-19 lockdowns, endless postponements, lost rehearsal time and a dwindling cast, Ardent Performing Arts have endured to bring you this epic drama.

Linda Marais (Director) says although it felt at times that we ourselves were fighting gladiators in a dusty arena, we had to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and make sure the show goes on! We are so proud of cast and crew who persevered and continue to believe this story needs to be told.

It is a story of courage, a story of faith, love and hope.

It is a story of people with indomitable spirit, immovable faith and incredible courage.

It is a story not to be missed.

Millwater Women’s Group The Millwater Women’s Group met for morning tea in February to arrange the outings for 2021. We also had a mystery guest who turned out to be local line dance teacher, Kylie Aspinall. As most of us have not danced before Kylie took us through some basic steps before turning them into dances.

Some of the members had hidden talents and a good time was had by all. Kylie told us that line dancing is good for

fitness and gives the brain a good workout too. I think we all agreed with that!
