Foreword
“Finding a myriad of reasons to celebrate every day is the key to having passion for life.”

For over a year, the pandemic has set limitations on life as we know it, making it easy to become drained and lost. However, the duller our days are, the more imperative it is for us to build rituals. Rituals help to draw our eyes to the details and refresh our perspectives on the everyday, and many of our most treasured memories are intimately connected to rituals and celebrations. In this issue of The Mills Paper, through a delightful assortment of festive ideas, we hope to inspire you to find your own reasons to celebrate. Every moment of life is worth enjoying.
Find Your Festivity
Find Your Festivity
These days, our lives have changed. This can cause anxiety and uncertainty, however, it is much easier than you think to spread positivity and encourage others to do the same — start with a smile and inspire others to rediscover their joie de vivre! Festivals have played an important part in human history for centuries. Perhaps it is because we all need a sense of anticipation in the repetitiveness of our daily lives. When our perspectives are refreshed, it is not hard to find reasons to celebrate each and every day. In Find Your Festivity, The Mills shares different ways of celebrating everyday life and imagines ten unique festivals to bring back the joy of celebration. Let’s explore your very own festival and let life take on refreshed colours and meaning!

Single Sock Day
Inconvenient things always happen at the most inconvenient time. A prime example of this is the missing sock. From this day onwards, set a date in the year to bid adieu to all your single socks — it’s a practice of discipline as well as clearing physical and mental clutter!
2
Documentary Day
Documentaries have a certain charisma compared to scripted stories. Watching a good documentary shines light on different issues and even helps us to bond with what’s around us. Regular documentary viewing will help stimulate the way you see the world.

Every year, set a date to start a plan that’s been on your mind — whether it be learning a language, collecting stamps or writing a novel. Don’t worry about the result — simply enjoy doing something new.
In the days past, the lifespan of an object easily outlasted that of a person. Fast forward to today’s consumerist society and it seems like we have long left behind the beauty of loving maintenance. Give your tools a regular clean — it’s the only way to make them last.
Before photographs were everywhere, families usually gathered on special occasions to take a family portrait. These portraits go on to become treasures. With instant communication these days, such shared experiences and memories have faded. Why not set a date to go to a studio for a professional set of some rather “proper” photos? Some of the most beloved things start from seemingly unnecessary rituals.

Role Play Day
Sometimes we wonder what it would be like if we were somebody else. In our pursuit of a more exciting life, why not find a day to play the role of a character of your dreams? Perhaps you may just find that back in your life, ordinary old me is not so ordinary at all.
7
Postcard Day
8
When was the last time you wrote something? Handwriting holds and reveals each person’s unique character and temperament, and becomes treasured items over time. Gather with some close friends and exchange hand-written postcards for sentiments that social media could never express.
Listening Day
Many of us lack listening skills. How about a quiet day to prioritise listening? Listen to the radio and share a connection with strangers, or listen to a musical performance and be in the moment, or quite simply, listen to someone else. The most important things are often hidden in silence.

When we reset our phone or computer to factory settings, for some reason we feel an unexplained sense of satisfaction. From time to time, life also needs resetting to clear the clutter for space to breathe again. So go on, turn off your devices and spend a day with yourself doing anything or nothing at all. Reset to refresh and reinvigorate.
Today’s the day! Create a festival of your own and create your own way of celebrating. Imagination alone is enough to enliven! Don’t forget to share your ideas with others and make a small difference in our community.

Kenry Chan and Lora Yuen, founders of Between Haru Kenry and Lora, founders of Between Haru, have their unique way of gathering. Regardless of how busy their patisserie cafe is, they regularly find a day to close the doors, spread their tools on the table, and get ready to share and journal. They call these “Journal Meetings”. Perusing their journals, you will find daily moments captured through stamps and stickers, washi paper and polaroid photos. Their process of journaling is filled not only with tool sharing, but also conversations around the aesthetics and techniques of layouts and colours. Since founding their cafe, Kenry and Lora spend most of their time at Between Haru. Their journals are filled with the particulars of the cafe, from dessert ideas to tasting notes. Most interestingly, notes from the months before the cafe opened show stamps of pendant lights and chairs sourced from around the world. Perhaps the most unique aspect of stationery is that, unlike drawing, it is not easy to encounter the right stationery every day. As time passes, pages turn yellow and the ink of stamp pads fade. Some even bear traces of coffee. Perhaps the beauty of sharing hobbies with friends lies in witnessing the passing of time together.
Between Haru’s “Journal Meetings” are much like spontaneous art jams. With stationery lovers commonly gathering in places such as Japan, Taiwan and Korea, Kenry and Lora hope to find fellow stationery lovers in Hong Kong.

Kelv Chan and Edchi, founders of CARRYin Everything you find at urban outdoor store CARRYin is personally recommended by its founders, Kelv Chan and Edchi. Always dressed in outdoor clothing as if ready to head off to a distant destination at a moment’s notice, urban outdoor is not only a hobby but a way of life for Kelv and Edchi. Under the pandemic, many city dwellers choose to explore Hong Kong’s rural regions. Kelv and Edchi are no exception. From spending the weekend with friends in a camper van, to preparing cold brew to tackle climbing the peak, they have found endless ways to experience the outdoors. Recently, they asked friends to each bring a bag of coffee beans from different origins and as they sat around the fire, ground the beans, boiled water and brewed coffee together. Discussing brewing tools, flavours, and brewing methods as they sipped steaming coffee was a unique experience for all. “Sometimes when friends visit us at the store, we grab some drinks and a foldable chair and head to the rooftop to chat,” said Kelv and Edchi, “It doesn’t just have to be in nature.” The mobility and versatility of urban outdoor furniture allow us to be ready for communication and connection wherever we are, whether it be home, outdoors or any other setting. “We value being present, open and free,” they concluded.

Music, Whiskey and Endless Conversation: Dinner with Designers Book B 主理人 Renatus Wu
Renatus Wu, founder of Book B The last time designer Renatus Wu carefully prepared for a gathering was the Friday just before the interview. One of his close friends was preparing to move overseas so a few friends, also designers, gathered at Renatus’ house for a farewell. “I’ve always invited friends over, but this time was special as I designed every aspect,” said Renatus. On the night before the gathering, Renatus designed an exquisite menu, checking beforehand that any unfavoured ingredients were off the list. The menu included an entree, main and dessert, with wine pairings. On the day of the gathering, he picked up fresh ingredients from a nearby grocery store in Wanchai. “Besides design, cooking is my favourite thing to do,” he said, “In some ways designing and cooking are very similar. But the process of cooking always opens my senses and relaxes my mind.” After dinner, conversations flowed. Under the soft glow of the lights, surrounded by music carefully selected by Renatus to each person’s taste, these longtime friends sipped whiskey and talked about the past and the future. In rare moments of silence, music filled the room and memories resonated. Life is about being present in every moment, otherwise we wouldn’t have memories, right?
Renatus runs a bookstore, but he also enjoys the unique experiences that music brings. Juggling multiple projects at work, Renatus uses music as a tool to help him shift his mind and mood. When gathering with friends, music facilitates many important conversations, often leading to surprising results.

This year, we invited students from previous The Mills Techstyle Summer Programs back to The Mills to share about their recent endeavours. With social design as the theme, longtime collaborator and designer Terry shared with students many real world examples of upcycling designs. From collecting to upcycling, the design process extends the lifecycle of textiles and broadens the application of these designs. Further, designer Jane also shared many overseas case studies and invited students to join a social design program creating custom aprons for members of the community which will be launched by The Mills in partnership with local community organisations.
School Program at The Mills

My Own Rituals
Start your day with a moment of silence
On any given day, we communicate with many different people in a variety of situations. Before we know it, life becomes a race to get things done, and we neglect our own thoughts and needs. After waking up, light a stick of incense and give yourself a moment of silence with your inner thoughts and feelings. Begin your day with this ritual to clear your mind and focus on what truly matters. B’IN SELECT

My Own Rituals
Often we forget that it’s the basic details, rather than luxuries, that make our day. Nothing beats a well-buttered toast and perfectly scrambled eggs in the morning to make you feel blessed. Add a cup of coffee and you’re ready for a great day! Cozy Coffee

Take cleansing seriously
After a busy day of work, all we want to do is to lie down and do as little as possible. Have you found how that seems to tire you even more? Like tidying your home, cleansing your body is a ritual to be taken seriously. Truly let go of the day in the process and emerge a lighter, cleaner, fresher you. Pimary

Create your ideal life starting with daily necessities
Do you remember the excited curiosity you had as a child amongst the rows of packed shelves in the supermarket? As adults, shopping for daily necessities has become an errand, with all the wonder gone. Look at it another way: careful selection of items is a conscious decision on how we live our lives. The difference between today and yesterday can lie in the rituals we perform and the mindset we perform them in. The Common Ground

Eat well
The importance of dinner lies in how closely it intertwines with our memories. A homemade meal is memorable not only for its taste, but also the texture of the tablecloth, the sound of cutlery in action and conversations with loved ones. Over time, these experiences resonate in our hearts and minds. Promise yourself that you will eat well, even when alone, because a good meal, with all its delights, is worth savouring. Pimary

Time for solitude

Whether it be reading a book, journaling, or having a drink, end the day with some alone time to reflect on the day and wind down for a restful sleep. At the end of the day, rituals are simply a way of giving thought to the way we live amongst the repetition and chaos of our daily lives. When we embrace everyday rituals, we can give our own meaning to life. Tankyu Distillery

A Date with Seeds
A Date with
Inspired by the concept of a Resilient City, the “In Time Of” programme is Nan Fung Group’s community initiative aimed at connecting people from all walks of life through social partnerships in sustainability, social design, culture, and arts. Under various project themes, the public can observe what is around them and reflect on how to rebuild the bond between humans and nature in a fastchanging society. Living in a globalised city, we are lucky to be able to enjoy foods from all over the world anytime and anywhere, without thinking about whether certain fruits or vegetables are in season. Our tastebuds have adapted to this convenience and we have forgotten that food is in fact sourced from the land and nature. This summer, The Mills launches “A Date with Seeds”, a new food and farming project exploring the link between seeds, land, and the importance of seasonal food. Working alongside local agricultural organisations, we hope to promote local sustainable agriculture practices.

“A Date with Seeds” seeks to provide a platform for improved understanding on our food sources and the latest developments in local farming so we can learn how to respect our land and live more sustainably. Together with Sustainable Ecological Ethical Development Foundation (SEED), The Mills holds a farmproduce market and various food-and-farming workshops on our rooftop farms in July and August. Participants can explore the diverse and different uses of farm produce and learn from farmers on how to pick the best crops. Getting to know stories through seeds will let us learn and change how we consume in the daily life, as well as become advocates of local farm and sustainable development.

To consume seasonally means to primarily eat foods harvested or produced in the current season. This eating habit can benefit both our health and nature. Crops grown during off-seasons require more fertiliser, and possibly an artificial environment. These farming practices can lead to increased carbon emissions, soil degradation and long-term environmental damages. In July and August, Organic Greenfield, an organisation based in Tsuen Wan that has long promoted “community-supported agriculture” by arranging produce co-purchases and holding farming workshops, has set up a pop-up store in The Mills selling exclusively seasonal foods. All products will be made from seasonal produce and tell the story of local farming and land. Buyers receive their vegetables with information about farming seasons and the farms that they come from, strengthening the connection between farmers and consumers.
Trunks and branches of plants are nutrient deliverers during planting and growing periods. Once the plant is harvested, the fruitful fibers are incredible ingredients for making papers. Workshop collaborator Lomfafair will pass on this traditional paper making technique by using natural materials in a sustainable way to create a unique texture and warmth of “Authentic Hong Kong Paper”. Plant fibers come from trunks and branches of local produce at The Deck of The Mills. We hope to make good use of every part of the plants in order to make a specially hand-made paper with seeds. Seed will be integrated into paper through the making process, participants could plant a new plant afterwards.

This summer, CHAT (Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile) will present Yee I-Lann: Until We Hug Again, the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong by Yee I-Lann, an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist from Kota Kinabalu, the State of Sabah, Malaysia. The exhibition showcases past and current works by Yee that offer a postcolonial reading of the Southeast Asian Archipelago and engage with the multi-ethnic and multicultural nature of the region. Speaking on themes of communal art-making for sustainability and preservation of nature and culture, the exhibition and its affiliation programmes engage its audiences with solidarity, compassion and humour. The exhibition shows not only the transcultural influence between Hong Kong and Malaysia but also common threads in terms of colonial impact over local culture and lifestyles. Visitors can expect to see newly commissioned works including one inspired by classic Cantopop songs as well as a special immersive installation at The Hall that invites their participation with heartwarming performances from local talents over the course of several weeks. A variety of hands-on experiences and workshops around themes of heritage and textile at The D. H. Chen Foundation Gallery will also be available. Exhibition opens on 1 September and concludes on 7 November.

Seed to Textile

The textiles we wear are made of fabric. Most fabrics are made from woven or knitted fibres, some of which are derived from natural plants. CHAT’s project Seed to Textile, a year-long community project, traces down textile manufacturing to its origin. The seed was sown when Krac-A-Dawna Organic Farm, CHAT’s collaborator from Mysore, India during Summer Programme 2019 visited Hong Kong and introduced to local farmers and dyers their operation ecosystem and their proud products made of home-grown and -spun cotton and self-processed indigo. In Spring Programme 2020, participating artist Kato Izumi created a commission artwork that incorporates living indigofera tinctoria, the same species growing in Krac-A-Dawna Organic Farm. After some processing, the indigo leaves that CHAT harvested last Summer have become their first jar of indigo pigment. With this homemade indigo, CHAT embarked on the journey of Seed to Textile. This summer, CHAT is delighted to wrap up the experiment and showcase their artistic explorations. Simultaneously with the Colour of the Earth exhibition at The Mills in the same period, CHAT will present the project and invites the public to join them in the accompanying indigo dyeing related workshops.

Q—Fabrica Lab is made up of the Design Lab, Fashion/Textile Lab and Hardware Tech Lab. How does the environment and facilities stimulate the creative process? T — Our Hardware Tech Lab provides machines such as 3D printers, laser cutter, power tools and electrical workbench which are very helpful for members with a technology background. The Design Lab is more focused on software skills. Our computer workstations are fully equipped with design and CAD software and are also host to the latest fashion design software such as CLO and Browzwear. Usually, those are quite difficult to access for the public, so having them available for our members makes a big difference in the way they can approach their workflow. Our Fashion/Textile Lab not only has state-of-the-art machinery and sewing equipment but also sources a variety of textile samples from manufacturers around the world. Designers, students and recent graduates can find samples made from entirely new materials and keep up with the latest trends. Lastly, through our industry network, we can also provide our members with technical and professional support based on their needs. Q—Can you share some interesting episodes while co-working with different creative units at Fabrica Lab? T — Recently, together with NMES Group, one of our newer incubatee companies, we created prototypes for a new version of their “tech suit” which comes equipped with a special conductive carbon membrane. It was interesting figuring out how to work with this new material and
technology, including how to process it into the right shape efficiently and integrate it seamlessly into the final garment. It is always an amazing opportunity to be involved with current and innovative projects. Q— Fabrica Lab provides techstyle workshops to the public. In what ways do you think these workshops benefit people from non-textile or design backgrounds? T — In the age of fast-fashion, most of the public today is disconnected from the things they wear and use. Our workshops aim to bridge that gap a little by showing people the involvement and care that is put into creating a garment. In addition, by bringing in new technologies and techniques into our workshops, we hope to show the public that these are very contemporary issues and encompass other subjects such as sustainability, community, and advanced technologies. By providing youths with this knowledge as well as tools, skills, and opportunities, we hope to foster new talents so that they can move the industry in the right direction with new ideas and projects. Q—How would you describe Fabrica Lab? T — Innovative, unique, creative, educational and interactive. These are all very important aspects of the work we do at Fabrica Lab. Q—Lastly, what change does Fabrica Lab hope to create? T — Inspiration, awareness, and innovation are our core goals for change at Fabrica Lab. They all work together to help us to create more sustainable techstyle futures.

Art is a Lifelong Practice Ven. Chang Lin
A few years ago, actress Karena Lam curated an exhibition for Japanese calligrapher Yūichi Inoue. Visiting the exhibition, I was deeply moved by his simple yet expressive calligraphy. When the opportunity arose, I borrowed a friend’s empty office for a month to try it myself. During that time, I intentionally replaced the traditional tools of ink brush, ink and rice paper with a paint brush, latex paint and crumpled cloth. Through the experience of clearing my mind of all thoughts, I created some calligraphy paintings. I asked director Kwan Pung-leung to capture my creative process which has been edited into three short documentary films, “Photography”, “Creativity” and “Practice”, and shared with you all through the exhibition “Weaving Lives - Zen Art Exhibition by Changlin Fashi 2021”. The concept of the exhibition is interwoven with The Mills’ vision of textiles. Representing life, a single length of fabric, woven from a variety of materials, forms a continuous axis linking the irregularly spaced artworks in the exhibition. Through the Zen photography and calligraphy artworks, I shared sentiments from life, reflecting on the impermanence and changeability of everything in the universe. With no such thing as perfection or imperfection, we can learn and improve even in the most difficult circumstances. Just as Zen practice and daily life are intertwined, art, creativity and practice cannot be distinguished nor separated. Problems are much easier to solve when you simply learn to change your perspective.
Nan Fung Textiles was founded in 1954 by Dr. D. H. Chen and grew to become a cornerstone of the territory’s dominant textile industry in the booming manufacturing era of the 1950s. Nan Fung Textiles initially comprised 6 factory buildings named Mills 1 through 6 respectively. While Mills 1, 2 and 3 were redeveloped in the 1990s, Mills 4, 5 and 6, completed between 1960-70, are the buildings that have been transformed to become The Mills today. Together, The Mills now covers roughly 260,000 sq. ft. and houses 3 pillars: Fabrica, Shopfloor and CHAT (Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile).
