Interviewing Him Lo

Him Lo

Imagine and join our community– Interview with Him Lo

After meeting Him Lo in the atrium, I was led toward the seats outside KOKO Coffee Roasters. He remarked, “this is where I usually work — much more comfortable than the office.” On a more serious note, he states “here I can always see how this space is being used by the public. This is the only way to come up with suitable activities to stimulate imaginations.” As the Community and Learning Curator of The Mills, he believes The Mills is a cultural hub. Here, the main goal is not to showcase sophisticated art pieces, but to return the space to the users — allowing them to feel involved in the community on the day they visit, and bring small but real changes.

Q — There is plenty of space that can be used freely in The Mills. What are the reasons behind such design? H — The biggest advantage of The Mills is to provide flexibility and freedom, allowing the public to reimagine how to use a space. Urbanites are accustomed to receiving information, but active participation in the use of a space is rare. Take the atrium as an example — one can sit on the stairs and the whole floor, to draw, write and have conversations. Given the freedom, people will naturally rethink their everyday habits. That being said, when designing the community program our imaginations did not run too wild. We deeply value the public nature of space and carefully considered how we should guide people to reflect on topics like conservation, consumption habits, labour rights, and sustainability through the organisaton of various activities. On Saturdays, sharing sessions, screenings, book clubs and shadow plays are held in turn in the atrium, to let members of the public at different ages, with different aesthetic preferences, participate through different media. While no one can tell another how to live, we hope that The Mills is a place that provides opportunity for self-reflection. As an example, taking selfies is an often criticised habit. However, observation and understanding of this behaviour allows us to organise related activities that allow everyone to enjoy taking selfies while instilling our community values.

05

Q — Are there any innovations in The Mills’ conservation activities? H — The Mills is housed in a former factory, and we wanted to establish a “manufacturing line” assembling all kinds of stakeholders, including vendors, designers, artists and the public. It is our hope that this group of people can mingle, imagine and implement ideas together. On every Saturdays, our “Social Weaver Bird” guides participants to knit scarves which will be gifted to the elderly in need. Using a traditional craft, we hope to connect different people in a traditional way. So yes, we plan to continue developing fun, yet quick activities that give back to society, giving participants a chance to experience the joy of creativity and changing the way the public interacts with us. Only the satisfaction experienced first-hand will make people want to continue taking part in our activities. We also hope to create a selfsufficient supply chain here. For instance, food waste and coffee grounds from eateries can be used as fertiliser for farmland, and the produce can be used by the shops — setting up a self-sufficient system within a relatively small space.

Q — Why is there an emphasis on the “story” element in the activities organised by The Mills? H — The identity of The Mills is a fine balance between honouring our existing structure and providing a springboard for future innovation. If the ideas don’t work with the hardware, we would simply become traditional trades housed in an old building. Our story forms a very important framework, shaping what we do in our programming and what we have done in terms of design. We have reached out to “Fleurs des lettres”, a local literary magazine, to share stories mentioning the labourers and textile industry of yesteryear. In the future, it is our wish to find old workers to return and share their experiences. A place needs a story to form not only its own character but reflect that of the supporting community. Q — You mentioned you like mingling with people at The Mills. Can you share any memorable experiences? H — I definitely enjoy observing the people here and their diverse lifestyle. Not just myself, but my colleagues Vicki (Project Manager) and Lin Lin (Community Facilitator) also reflect on the effectiveness and direction of our activities through observation. The most interesting thing is, I realised the human landscape of a place is quite similar to tie-dying and weaving textiles — some people supply the raw materials, a cohort of previously unrelated people assemble, reflecting collectively on their own and the whole city’s lifestyle. In this process, time is of the most importance, engagement and imagination happen naturally, requiring time and space in order to develop into something special.

Rendezvous with clothes — Interview with Green Ladies & Green Little

Petty Lee

Green Ladies & Green Little 項目經理 Project Manager

Founded in 2008, Green Ladies, a boutique selling second-hand clothing, has seen a recycling rate increase of 25 per cent to 75 per cent over the course of the past 11 years. The project advocates sustainability as much as wearing high quality pre-owned garments. The store’s third outpost is located at The Mills, with well-lit rows of clothing neatly organized by color, a contrast to the typical second-hand clothing store. Aside from the aesthetics, there is much more to running the store. Petty Lee, project manager, shares a few thoughts:

Second Life 07

Q — How does the consignment system work at Green Ladies? P — We have laid down a sharp and precise categorisation for consignors given that Hong Kong is not accustomed to this method of retail. We collect garments, regardless of style and the age of targeted buyers, by seasons and sort by materials and conditions. The period of consignment lasts for two months. Consignors receive a monthly report and receive 30 per cent of the sales price as commission when their piece is sold. Q — What is the biggest factor setting Green Ladies apart from other fashion boutiques? P — We would like to prolong the decision-making process for our customers. Most boutiques encourage customers to purchase out of impulse by having a onemonth return policy. That does not incentivise customers to think before purchasing and leads to so much waste. At Green Ladies, we have applied 4 steps between the moment you set your eyes on a particular item and the moment you pay: First, there is a bio-cost on each tag; for example, one particular garment costing HK$80 comes with a number of 8,000, which is the number of chemicals used on that

garment. Second, we encourage you to try before you buy. Third, there are three hooks in each fitting room — one labeled “Yes”, one labeled “Nay” and one labeled “Second Thought”, encouraging customers to rethink whether they already own something similar. The final step is a sign at cashier with the saying “Buy less, choose the best”. Q — Could you tell us more about the thoughts behind the efforts you have put in for the interior design and displaying arrangements? P — We really want to reach out to people who are not interested in second-hand clothing. We have therefore put more effort in the spatial design, making it cozy and comfortable, to change perceptions of pre-owned garment stores and enabling customers to understand more about their personal tastes, styles and preferences in the process of selecting clothes. This is a unique experience of time in our opinion, and we find that most customers spend half an hour to an hour on each visit, which is rare in first-hand boutiques.

Q — What is so special about your store at The Mills? P — If you pay extra attention, the full name of this outpost is Green Ladies & Green Little, which is our collection for children. Adults of course are prone to pick items with no flaws. But our observation tells us that children have no such tendency. Instead, they like clothes as they are. We hope to make this space become more than a boutique, but a venue for the next generation to learn more about sharing and caring. Q — Over the last decade, what are the most memorable anecdotes from running this business? P — Many. But the most memorable one should be one incident where a customer was able to encounter another customer picking the items she consigned. At that moment, she was mesmerised by the special feeling of a garment being hung at a particular spot in the shop and being picked to go home by someone else, an engagement between shoppers and clothes, more than a mere commodity.

Q — What do you think is the importance of live music? M — When we started, we were just playing music with a few likeminded friends. A few years ago, we decided to perform outside to a wider audience. We talked about how there are different jazz musicians performing at different bars every evening in Harlem. These musicians sometimes joining in on a whim, substituting for someone else. The more often we performed, the better the quality of our music became. The audience began to ask for new songs involving more complex skills. It was a competitive age that gave rise to so many great jazz musicians, we thought why not act first, and develop along the way? B — From the audience’s point of view, it is an opportunity to hear musicians make mistakes. CD or digital files are perfect, but most performances are greatly restricted, and mistakes can be remedied. Live music is completely different. In fact, many of the musicians' ideas can only be tested in a live setting, and the other performers may not even be aware of it. Musicians must be very sensitive, to feel other performers’ emotions, the audience’s

mood, and then participate in his or her own way. This is a dangerous, but at the same time a wonderful process. In a jazz performance, no one is talking on the surface, yet the communication is happening discreetly and passionately. In other words, while the audience may hear mistakes, they can also appreciate the art of an unrepeatable, improvised performance. Q — Is there a particularly memorable performance you can share with us? M — We both studied jazz guitar in Portugal many years ago. At the time I felt that my achievements were few and far between, but my teacher lined up an opportunity for me to perform at a bar that normally housed professional musicians. The venue, publicity and musicians were all top-notch. That night, it dawned upon me that there was a vast difference between the skills and talents of professional musicians and myself. Since then I have kept a humble heart. B — For me, it was a performance last week in Thailand. While most people were watching from the sidelines, a one- or two-year-old little girl was swinging along to the music. The extraordinary thing is, her rhythm was absolutely spot on. Afterwards I reflected – jazz is not to do with knowledge or aesthetics, but it begins from the soul, resonating from inside out.

Q — What kind of experience do you want to offer listeners without music background? M — Through constant emulation and learning, I have gained a freedom of expression in jazz music. I hope listeners can feel that emotional resonance, arousing a fervid desire for freedom. B — The younger generation has mainly been exposed to music via computers. It is my hope that through close interactions, they can understand that music is actually created and played by a group of people, not a file that can be accessed by pressing a couple of keys to generate a melody.

Getting back to the heart of the cafe —Interview with Retold Upon entering the coffee shop, I hear a soft rhythmic jazz amidst the morning glow. As I wait for the owner Grace to brew my coffee, I hold my head on the wooden table and notice a tiny snail painted next to the store glass door sign.

Q — Can you explain the name of the coffee shop? G — Hong Kong people naturally associate coffee shops with hearty, photogenic foods like English breakfasts and scones. I believe that drinks should be the soul of a coffee shop. We focus on three kinds of drinks — coffee, Chinese tea and cocktails, to have the essence of the coffee shop “Retold”. The name emphasizes the aesthetic and spiritual experience that we want to remember as the spirit of the coffee shop. Take coffee as an example — we offer the “one plus one” tasting method, allowing customers to taste one variety of coffee bean rendered differently in espresso and piccolo forms. We also mix different cocktails incorporating tea and coffee, developing a flavour unique to us. Q — Why would you invite musicians to perform in the coffee shop? G — A few years ago, my job made me realise that I have missed a lot of things on the spiritual level. Urbanites are more or less a bit dichotomous — to me a coffee shop

is a place that allows you to stop such self-imposed compulsion. With this in mind, we invite a band to perform every month. Whether it is rock, jazz or other kinds of music, we are happy to provide a platform for performances. During this time, customers can listen to music while chatting with friends, or enjoying their hard-earned solitude. This kind of experience matches well with the soul of coffee shops — life is a process, not a result. Q — What is the customer reaction to these performances? G — To be honest, every time there is a performance, many people only peek in from outside. Even those who have come to sit down stare nervously at the musicians as though they are watching a concert. Hong Kongers are too uptight, even in relaxation they are anxious about losing something. We really should learn to slow down, experience a drink and the little pleasures of life. A place where there is no need to rush, where it is fine to be oneself — this is the kind of place I envision Retold to be.

The view atop— Interview with The Deck

After the interview concluded, Ann, in charge of our rooftop urban farm, gave me a tray of freshly harvested leaves and okra. I took a few steps and realised I have not taken any photos, and as I turned around — I took a second look at the farm, a small patch of land growing all kinds of crops. Farmers were working hard to harvest, and factory buildings and office buildings were not far away in the background. I thought to myself, what a contrast, and what a unique view The Mills has!

Q — Can you explain briefly how The Deck operates? A — Divided into two sections, the farmland is partially rented to tenants of The Mills, with sessions every Wednesday guiding them on farming methods; the second section is taken care of by professionals, mainly growing edible flowers and dye (materials) for activities at The Mills. Suitable crops are chosen for each season, and support is offered during every step from sowing and transplanting seedlings to harvesting of crops. Also, we are entirely organic, with no chemical fertilisers or pesticides being used. Q — Is rooftop farming difficult for urbanites? A — Not at all. As long as the environmental constraints and needs of the crops are understood, rooftop faming is easy. We have noticed that some Hong Kongers less exposed to farming do not believe they can grow crops they can eat in a location like The Mills. However, during the last crop season when we planned to grow extralarge turnips for turnip cake, some

of our tenants only expected the largest of the turnips to be palmsized, yet upon harvest they found that each turnip weighed between 1-2kg. For those farming for the first time, this was a huge surprise. Upon tasting, we hope to highlight the difference between crops grown by yourself and those purchased from outside. Newly harvested crops less oxidised and taste incredibly fresh as they still have life in them, to allow this to nourish your bodies is a continuation of that life. Q — Can you share a fun anecdote? A — On a heavily raining Wednesday when the Black rainstorm warning signal was hoisted, I was standing on one side, observing the farm’s drainage system. At that moment, I saw a drenched office lady holding an umbrella making her way to the farm. She said she wanted to ensure the crops she was growing were okay. When urbanites learn farming, they don’t just learn about simply treasuring food.

Q — Can you explain the thought behind the name “Pimary”? D — We really like the concept of Pimary – primal, essential, and fundamental. My previous job was too busy, I found myself buying more and more luxury goods but still felt unsatisfied. When the opportunity to open a shop arose, I wanted to go back to basics and focus on essential everyday goods including homeware and skincare. As for the missing ‘r’ in Primary, what is left is Pi, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter in maths. This is an infinite, endless number. The idea behind this is, just like being environmentally friendly, Pimary is a lifestyle with no end. Q — Your other store is in a rural area, has this store brought you any unique experiences? D — Our Tai Po shop is nestled in a 50-year-old building, surrounded by flowers and trees, so naturally it has more exchange with nature. When conceptualising designs for the shop at The Mills, we wanted to continue this theme, and used many wooden boards and branches to create a natural, rustic sensibility that emulates nature. Branches

used in our interior decorations are from trees damaged by the Super Typhoon Mangkhut, I picked them up along the roads myself after the storm. Similar to Japanese flower arrangement ikebana, it is about the feeling of “Ichi-go ichi-e”, which is the concept of treasuring the unrepeatable nature of a moment. Q — In recent years, Hong Kong has been promoting green living. Do you see any shortcomings? D — To me, the people who talk about environmental friendliness in Hong Kong tend to pressure those around them. I often hear about friends checking if the people around them have stopped using straws and plastic bags. Though well intentioned, it comes with unnecessary pressure and may suffocate people, making them feel bad. At Pimary, environmental friendliness is not a sense of identity, but a way of living. We want to present a zero-waste lifestyle that reduces the burden on the earth in a comfortable, stress-free way. We must first communicate internally with ourselves and with nature, only this way are we able to truly and easily live a sustainable life.

TG3D Studio is a very forwardthinking fashion technology company that primarily offers digitalised solutions for the fashion industry. Here below is the sharing of Rick Yu, one of its founders.

Q — Can you share the original idea of starting TG3D? R — TG3D wants to find a brand new operation method for fashion industry. For half a century, fashion design, production and its wholesale to retail distribution method has not changed much. Other than the possibility of purchasing clothes online, the whole process has basically remained unchanged, so we wondered if there is any way to solve the problems now. Right now there are three key issues with the current process: first, the manufacturing process is highly costly in terms of labour and capital. From design, to sampling and confirming the design, the back and forth of the process takes a few months; second, it is the manufacturing issue. Right now products need to start being made a year before they reach the shelves, how many to produce can only be an educated guess from past experience and forecast of the future; third it is the retail issue, consumers often cannot buy what suits them and they either get returned or discarded. At the end of a season, a lot of products that are left are sold at discounts, in outlets and eventually burnt. Therefore, while the unsustainability of fashion has a lot to do with the materials, it is also closely related to manufacturers not knowing what to produce and how much to produce. Q — How does TG3D solve these problems? R — In the face of these problems, TG3D has done a lot of early stage discussion and research, and reached the conclusion that the digitalisation of fashion is a necessary process. Right now only very few brands know the body shapes and sizes of their target consumers. We first use fabric scanner to digitalise fabrics, and then the sample silhouette and the finished garment as well, to virtually complete different styles and sizes in 3D. The most important is to digitalise the consumers’ body shapes. Brands only have to put a scanner in their stores; after scanning, you will not buy the wrong sizes of clothes, so it will be much less likely you buy the wrong garment. When the clothes fit, consumers might keep them for longer instead of throwing them away after wearing just a few times. Meanwhile, the brands accumulate this data and gain an understanding of the spectrum of body sizes of their consumers. When developing new products, this allows them to produce clothes that suit their target consumers better. Q — What are the plans for TG3D in the future? R — By the end of this year TG3D will summarise all the aforementioned digitalised processes, whether in physical stores or online, to “visualise” clothes shopping through virtual fitting just like in a fitting room, and solve the existing problems of the fashion industry at the same time.

Events

Perhaps “wearables” is a newly coined term lately for modern people, though the concept had already emerged half a century ago. Moreover, Hong Kong is the originator of “wearables”. In last century’s HK films, all kinds of wearables sparked off various trends. From Mark Lee in “A Better Tomorrow” to the stockbrokers in Central, everyone had a brick-sized handset, as though that could bestow a status symbol upon the users. From Vintage to Techstyle is an exhibition that traces back to the 60’s in the last century, explores HK’s style evolution of the “wearables” in these 60 years all the way till after the millenium. From Camel brand vacuum flasks to Nintendo’s Famicom and the recent sensory vests for gaming, it demonstrates how electronics and technology have influenced people’s lifestyle. It also delves into how HK’s wearables culture may return to the roots of manufacturing industry after the millenium, incorporating fashion and science, from which it emerged the brand new “Techstyle” wearables.

This summer, CHAT will present Indian artist N S Harsha’s first large-scale solo exhibition in Hong Kong, titled Gathering Delights. N S Harsha was born in 1969, now resides in Mysuru, India. The artist is inspired by multi-dimensional visual languages, including Indian painting, Western modern painting, graphic novels and Japanese manga. His multi-faceted art encompasses paintings, sculptures, art installations and workshops, etc. Harsha often deploys textiles and sewing machines in his works as materials as well as key motifs, depicting personal memories and collective gestures that weave human acts with the state of the world and the universe. CHAT’s Co-Director Takahashi Mizuki said, “Through Gathering Delights, we hope that audiences will be able to see how textile is a blank canvas that allows for imagination and interpretation”.

The Mills's Security Guard

I am a security guard at The Mills, running errands and handling miscellaneous duties including answering guest enquiries, inspecting the tidiness of the venue, and stocking of leaflets. One of the most asked questions I get from visitors is the best route of going through the venues, because the set up here is different from the typical mall. I enjoy my work here because I get the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. The most memorable event for me so far is a performance led by an artist from Sabah, Malaysia, where we all danced bare foot, on some clothes to some fun music. Once the clothes were removed, I saw the vibrant colors and the print we collectively had a part in creating, and the image has been embedded in my mind. Of course, scenes like this are not part of my daily routine. I really enjoy my time being here as the scenes change constantly, resonating changes of lights beaming through The Hall.

The imminence of literature about labours

Editor of Fleurs des lettres

At The Mills, busy production lines, loud machines, and crowded rows of workers have been replaced by air conditioned, well-lit, trendy cafes and modern retail housing sophisticated consumer goods. As a regular employee, I contemplate whether we live lives that are superior to labor workers of yesteryear. Do we live more relaxing lives with less economic pressure than they did? Our literary magazine organized a book club to discuss the literature available on Hong Kong labor with the aim to expose the difficult lives of laborers at textile factories. We have invited Mr. Cen Wen-jin to share his poems, and the pleasures and sorrows of his works, in exploring the differences or similarities between the lives of workers then and employees now. Under capitialism, we are all equal.

(The

Nan Fung Textiles was founded in 1954 by Dr. D. H. Chen and grew to become a cornerstone of the territory’s dominant textile industry in the booming manufacturing era of the 1950s. Nan Fung Textiles initially comprised 6 factory buildings named Mills 1 through 6 respectively. While Mills 1, 2 and 3 were redeveloped in the 1990s, Mills 4, 5 and 6, completed between 1960-70, are the buildings that have been transformed to become The Mills today. Together, The Mills now covers roughly 260,000 sq. ft. and houses 3 pillars: Fabrica, Shopfloor and CHAT (Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile).
