EDITOR’S CHAIR

T

his section of the paper usually has a similar tone and feel. In past issues, I have described it as a "snapshot in time". A combination of sorts of what I may be feeling or going through at the time of putting the paper together and even include a brief view into current events. My goal is to be able to look back at some of this commentary in the future and recall how I may have been feeling or what some of the current issues of the day were .

Currently, one word that seems to resonate at this point in time is uncertainty. There is a level of nervousness and instability that exists.

From record gas prices approaching $5.00 per gallon, an unfortunate and disturbing trend of mass gun shootings, high inflation, baby formula shortages, and talks of a recession, I find myself not even wanting to watch the news in an effort to protect my peace.

I then question myself as to how does this translate to a newspaper? I feel that my role as Publisher of The Midtown Press is to inform, educate and entertain you as the reader. Since assuming this role, I have been operating on cruise control with a focus on maintaining the status quo so that I felt comfortable in producing each issue. However, with each issue, I feel the need to do more. To grow more, to connect more, to be more. I want people to feel good when they pick up a copy to read. With that in mind, I want to hear from you. I will be making some gradual changes over the next few months, but I

would like to listen what you like about The Midtown Press and what you would like to see more of. While I can see a survey of some kind in the future, in the meantime, feel free to email me at anytime your thoughts at glen@themidtownpress. com.

Despite the proliferation of other digital outlets, I am encouraged that there is still a strong desire amongst readers to "get ink on their fingers." With that in mind, please rest assured that we will continue to print and distribute a physical copy of The Midtown Press.

From initial conversations, I believe there are opportunities to grow the paper digitally, provide more up-todate content and even produce events. I subscribe to the motto, "if you are not growing, you are dying." My initial plan is to focus on new sections and introduce new faces and writers to the paper. I want to be more deliberate about connecting to the community to include more about the good happening in our community despite the current climate. I am excited about the future of the paper and the impact that I believe it can have on our community.

Stay tuned for a revamped website that will hopefully attract new readers and satisfy our current readers. As always, I thank you for your support of local media and The Midtown Press!

t's that time of year for our fathers to get their annual replenishment of socks, T-shirts, grill gear, and power tools! Yes it is Father's Day!

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), consumer spending this Father’s Day is expected to hit $20 billion, which is in line with last year’s record-setting figure of $20.1 billion. Based on NRF survey data, approximately 76 percent of U.S. adults are expected to celebrate Father’s Day. Consumers this year plan to spend approximately $172.00 to honor their fathers and other important men in their lives, with the majority of that spending on special outings such as a Father’s Day dinner or brunch.

By the time this issue is published, we will be in full-swing in the "dog-days" of summer! Smack dab in the middle of the calendar is Independence Day (the 4th of July)! While the holiday is meant to commemorate the Declaration of Independence of the United States, the federal holiday is commonly associated with fireworks, beaches, parades, barbecues, picnics, concerts, and family reunions. According to survey data from research company Numerator, approximately 90% of consumers plan on celebrating the 4th of July holiday this year. In fact, the holiday is a "Top 5" holiday for gathering with friends & family

behind Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, and New Year's Eve. Shoppers estimate they’ll spend closer to $100.00 on Independence Day celebrations, including food, decorations and, of course, fireworks! 

Family Summer Safety

I

t’s summertime! Across the country, kids are rejoicing that there is no school or textbooks or teachers’ watchful looks. But for parents, summer takes on a whole new set of worries...Summer safety concerns. Don’t fret; this summer checklist will help keep the kids happy and healthy all summer long.

Heat Safety There are nearly 700 deaths each year due to heat-related illnesses, per the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The young and old are most susceptible. Staying cool, hydrated, and informed about the heat will keep your family safe on the hottest days of summer.

Remember these tips: • • • • • • •

Wear loose-fitting, light-colored, lightweight clothes Choose activities in the morning and evening. Stay in between 10 am -4 pm Frequently rest in the shade or find a cool area Prevent sunburn. It alters the ability of the body to cool itself Drink plenty of fluids Recognize danger signs (dizziness, headache, confusion) and STOP the activity Never leave a child or pet in a hot car

Sun Safety In a 2016 Position Statement, the American Academy of Dermatology voiced concern about the increased prevalence of skin cancer in young adults. It reports that just one blistering sunburn during childhood or adolescence can nearly double the chance of developing melanoma later in life.

Start these skin protective habits early in life to maintain healthy skin: • • •

Wear sunscreen of at least SPF 30 (people of color as well) Cover up with sun protective gear (i.e., clothing, glasses, and a hat) Find some shade

Water Safety According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of death due to unintentional injury in children ages 1-4. Most occur in and around the home. Set up these layers of protection to prevent drowning: • • • • • •

Assign a water watcher (no distractions from a phone, chatting, or drinking alcohol) Utilize water safety equipment to prevent young children from entering the water unsupervised-ex. Gate, locks, bells, alarms Someone should know CPR Learn to swim as soon as possible Have non-swimmers wear life vests and keep a life ring close by Do not use floaties! They give everyone a false sense of security and make children think they can swim.

Bug Safety People love to get out for a bit summer fun. But so do insects who thrive in the warmth and humidity. Mosquitos and ticks potentially carry viruses, including Zika, West Nile, and Lyme disease. And for individuals with allergies to stings, buzzing bees can also be dangerous.

Don’t forget these tips to prevent bug encounters: • Apply an EPA registered repellent www.epa.gov/insect-repellents • Remove stagnant water around your home • Create a Tick Free Zone www.cdc.gov/lyme/prev/in_the_yard.html • Keep a bee sting Anaphylaxis Emergency Action Plan if your child is allergic www.aaaai.org/Aaaai/media/ MediaLibrary/PDF Documents/Libraries/ Anaphylaxis-Emergency-Action-Plan.pdf Injury Prevention In the US, nearly half of all unintentional injury-related deaths among children ages 14 and younger occur during the three months of summer. Teach and practice injury prevention at home with these life-saving tips.

• Supervise younger children • Safety proof your environment, especially home (i.e., plug covers, stair gates, medications, guns, and ensure chemicals are properly secured) • Wear safety gear, including bike helmets, seat belts, car seats, and life vests • Warn teens against being impaired or distracted (i.e. alcohol, drugs, texting while driving or boating)

Ongoing COVID-19 Prevention As COVID cases rise and fall and new variants emerge, don’t let your guard down because we are still in a pandemic! Continue to practice safety measures according to COVID activity in your community via www.cdc.gov, including: • Hand hygiene • Keep gatherings outdoors when possible • Wear masks indoors when appropriate • Stay home if your sick • Get vaccinated And finally, don't forget to get yearly checkups before the back-to-school rush. Orange County Launches Community Development Plan and Fair Housing Study Orange County's Housing and Community Development division will soon develop strategic plans that will feature important community feedback.

The community development plan also called the Five-Year Consolidated Plan and Annual Action Plan, assesses the current housing market, discusses characteristics of the County population, identifies community improvement priorities, and outlines a plan to fund and implement them. The plans help to guide investments of federal dollars in affordable housing, social services, community development, and homelessness assistance programs across the County for 2022-2026. The community's opinions and perceptions are an essential part of these planning processes, and everyone is invited to participate. Your input will provide crucial information to local policymakers, County staff, housing providers, social service providers, lenders, and affordable housing advocates. Residents are encouraged to complete an online survey to engage in this process and share ideas with the planning team. Please scan the QR Code to access the survey. 

Regular Curbside Collection to Continue During Summer Holidays Orange County Utilities reminds unincorporated customers that garbage, recycling, yard waste, and large items will be collected on Independence Day (Monday, July 4th) for residents who regularly get their waste picked up on Mondays.

Regular collection rules are still in place. Customers are asked to be mindful of how they dispose of items like fireworks, block party leftovers, and yard waste. Please be aware that fireworks are not recyclable and should be soaked in water and cooled before being disposed of in your green-lid garbage cart after use. It is officially hurricane season, and now is an excellent time to trim trees and prepare your property. Don’t wait for a storm warning to cut down limbs or clear foliage. As a reminder, yard waste items should be cut down to size, bundled appropriately, and follow weight restrictions.

Public Works Makes Safety Improvements at Dangerous Intersection The Orange County Public Works Department has made significant safety improvements to the intersection of Clarcona-Ocoee Rd. and Gaymar Dr. The intersection is the site of a fatal crash that tragically claimed five lives in March 2021.

In response to the tragedy, Orange County Public Works staff expedited the installation of the new traffic signal at the intersection, which became operational on May 3, 2022.

A site analysis determined adding a traffic signal would improve safety at that location.

Public Works’ Traffic Engineering division accelerated the process of installing the traffic signal by using internal resources, saving nearly a year in design and construction. In addition, pavement markings showing the speed limit were installed approaching the intersection, as well as speed feedback signs. 

Orange County Commissioners Vote to Advance Sales Tax Referendum to November Ballot By a vote of four to three, Commissioners Christine Moore, Mayra Uribe, and Maribel Gomez Cordero joined Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings in voting to place a Transportation Sales Tax Referendum on the fall election ballot. This means that on November 8, 2022, when Orange County voters go to the polls, they will have the opportunity to decide if they want a one-cent sales tax increase that would be a dedicated funding source for transportation needs.

Mayor Demings, whose push for the sales tax referendum began in 2019, re-engaged residents earlier this year by creating open houses and launching an online survey to ensure Orange County’s transportation priorities in 2022 aligned with initial surveys. 19,000 residents responded to the survey, and 270 community meetings were held to gather resident transportation needs and feedback.

Respondents overwhelmingly stated traffic congestion is a big concern and want a better mass transit system for the community, as well as improved traffic signal technology, and pedestrian and bike safety.  T H E M I DTO W N PRESS / 1 1

he vision of the Pine Hills Seniors is to stay active, independent, stay involved, and that we have been doing even still while under COVID-19 precautions. In order to be in compliance with meeting guidelines, we have had to divide President our seniors into two groups to not Pine Hills Seniors exceed occupancy restrictions.

Ms. Lorna Wilmoth Since returning in person on March 30th, we celebrated Women’s History Month with speakers including Lavon Williams, Manager, Neighborhood Preservation and Revitalization Division, and Roselyn Clouden, President, Pine Hills Safe Neighborhood Partnership. In April we participated in the Wayne Densch YMCA 5K Walk project of Ms. Debra Allen, and the Multicultural Festival at Eagles Nest Park. A highlight for our group was having our Vice President, Ms. Andrea Jackson reading a proclamation from Orange County Mayor, Jerry Demings on her Radio show S.T.A.R. “Straight Talk with Amazing Reality on WOKB 1680 Radio. Our next event will be on June 16, 2022, at Orlo Vista Park, where we will be celebrating Caribbean Heritage Month. We will then be closing out for the summer and look forward to returning in September anticipating that our space at the new Orange County Cultural Center will be ready.

range County Public Schools will provide free breakfast and lunch to children ages 18 and younger throughout this summer. The program will be available at 224 locations throughout the county. Free meals will be available at schools with summer programs, summer camps, and at several churches, as well as six branches of the Orange County Library — Chickasaw, Fairview, Shores, Hiawassee, North Orange, South Creek and South Trail.

According to OCPS, all menu items are taste-tested and approved by at least 80% of students. Each meal served will include fresh fruits and vegetables, an entrée, and milk.

The program began full operation on June 1st and will continue through July 31st. Please note that eligible children must be served and eat each meal on-site, in a supervised setting. Meals must be consumed within the site's approved serving times, and only one meal may be served during each service time. Parents must sign in at the location's front desk and be directed to the designated dining area.

KNOW THIS Florida Hometown Heroes Housing Program

O

n June 1, 2022, the State of Florida officially launched the Florida Hometown Heroes Housing Program to help Floridians in over 50 critical professions purchase their first home. The Hometown Heroes Housing Program will be available to Floridians, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, educators, healthcare professionals, childcare employees, and active military or veterans.

The program is administered by the Florida Housing and Finance Corporation.

It has the highest and most inclusive eligibility of all Florida Housing down payment assistance programs. The program is geared to expanding on Florida’s existing housing programs to reach critical workers and those who have served our country.

This year, the Florida Housing and Finance Corporation received $100 million from the state Legislature to establish and administer the Florida Hometown Heroes Housing Program. The program will aid essential community workers in 50 different eligible professions with down payment and closing cost assistance to help first-time, income-qualified homebuyers purchase a primary residence in the communities they serve. Funds will be available to reserve starting June 1, which coincides with National Homeownership Month. This occasion celebrates the value that comes with owning a home brings to families, communities, and neighborhoods.

To qualify for this program, home buyers must connect with a participating loan officer, have a minimum credit score of 640, provide certification for one of the eligible occupations, and meet the income threshold for their county. Eligible borrowers will receive up to 5% of the first mortgage loan amount (up to a maximum of $25,000) in down payment and closing cost assistance in the form of a 0%, non-amortizing, 30-year deferred second mortgage. RISE Employment & Training Program

T

he RISE (Rapid Increase of Skills & Employment) Training Program is a City of Orlando initiative hosted in partnership with CareerSource Central Florida to ensure Orlando’s residents impacted by COVID-19 have equitable access to opportunities for assessment, education, training, coaching and support services to increase their employability. ith warmer temperatures now upon us, now is a perfect time to remind everyone about the dangers that hot vehicles pose to children and pets. Never leave children unattended in cars and take precautions to prevent children from entering unlocked vehicles. Heatstroke in children can happen quickly, as their bodies are smaller, heat up faster, weigh less, and are more prone to the effects of extreme temperatures. Heatstroke fatalities can happen in vehicles parked in shaded areas and in temperatures as low as 57 degrees, even with cracked windows. In 2020, 24 children died in hot cars. Additionally, leaving an animal in the car for even a few minutes on warm days can be detrimental for your pet! These tips can help prevent tragedies for children and pets: • Check the back seat every time whenever leaving your vehicle.

Place a stuffed animal or toy up front as a reminder, or place your purse or another important item in the backseat.

• Ask your child’s daycare or school to call if your child does not arrive at an expected time.

• Keep parked vehicles locked at all times to prevent a child from climbing in and becoming trapped.

• Teach children that vehicles are not a place to play.

• Never leave a child or a pet in a vehicle when running errands.

Leave pets at home when possible.

• Bystanders can also play an essential role in saving a life – if you see a child or pet alone in a vehicle, call 911 and get help immediately.

"The People’s Hob Nob" & Straw Poll

oin the Pine Hills Community Council for the 2022 Hob Nob & Straw Poll, on Thursday, July 14, 2022, from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at the Central Florida Fairgrounds (Hall A) located at 4603 West Colonial Dr., Orlando, FL 32808.

This event is designed to help educate the community on making informed decisions at the ballot box by becoming more familiar with community issues and the candidates running for federal, state and local offices. It is a unique opportunity to express your solidarity with the community and mingle with the candidates. The last Hob Nob event held in 2018 had a record attendance with over 400 participants. This Pine Hills and Greater Orlando event will include a "Straw Poll" courtesy of the Orange County Supervisors of Elections Offices.

Participating candidates will be introduced and allowed two minutes to introduce themselves and the office they are running for. A moderator will be present to enforce time limits. The Pine Hills Community Council is providing this event as an opportunity to candidates running for public office to meet and inform constituents about their position on various policies that are important to directly affect the community.

fter meeting with Orange County Government and State Representatives, the Pine Hills Safe Neighborhood Partnership participated in a Town Hall meeting with Senator Randolph Bracy and State Representative Travaris McCurdy. Also, with the assistance of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Code Enforcement, and Orange County Government, we have started to see a positive change regarding the maintenance of the roads in Pine Hills. This is just the beginning, and we expect to see more progress in the future. The Pine Hills Safe Neighborhood Partnership continues to work with our elected officials to bring about positive change in the Pine Hills Community.

Evans Welcomes Newest Trojan During the Freshmen Experience

O

n May 17th, more than 150 students of the Class of 2026 came to the Evans campus to see their new home for the next four years. Students and families had the chance to tour the campus, hear from SGA members, meet with representatives from various clubs and programs and learn about the services and resources that the HUB offers.

Trojan Leaders joined Evans Community Partnership School HUB team members to talk with parents about our partnership with Orange Blossom Family Health, introduce students to our Trojan Mentoring Program and sign-up parents for information about the PTSA and other resources. The group is excited to work with the newest students in the Fall.

The Game of Life Comes to Evans

T

ruist Bank and Heart of Florida United Way brought a little bit of financial reality to graduating seniors. Over 60 students had the opportunity to participate in the "Reality Store" experience and learn about how to manage their money and plan for expenses. Students selected a career, received a salary for that career, paid taxes and expenses and learned how critical their financial choices are with the guidance and support of over 25 volunteers from Truist. When asked about the experience, students shared:

"I thought the simulation was a very good learning experience. It was a wakeup call to the reality of financial stability, especially for seniors. It was also fun and interesting and could definitely be a learning experience that I will use in the future and now." ~E. Gonzalez "The workshop was very fun, and insightful about life and managing money it was very enjoyable and I’d recommend people to actually do it the next time it happens." ~T. Bryan Students loved the experience and said all students should participate, which is what Evans administrators hope to see next year.

ay 2nd - May 6th was teacher appreciation week at Evans Community Partnership School. Students and community members stepped up to thank and appreciate the 165 teachers who "light a fire" every day for our students. The HUB kicked off the week with breakfast from Krispy Kreme. Thanks to Glen Providence, Community Leadership Council vicechair from Hebni Nutrition, teachers were able to cool off with some of his homemade SMILE Ice Cream in partnership with Roben Dunnings with Simply Healthcare Plans.

Thanks to Community Leadership Council members Patricia Rumph from The Pine Hills Community Council and Casey Evans from Orlando Economic Partnership, teachers received fun snack bags. Trojan Leaders and SGA also created personalized “thank you” cards and a special candy treat for each teacher.

The Trojan Market Goes Online

T

his Spring, the Trojan Market continued to evolve. Jinnelle and Nick serve as the student managers for our Trojan Market, a place where students can get food, clothing, and school supplies. This year the market moved into the main Evans Administrative building, providing easier access for students and helping to erase the stigma of using such a resource. An online ordering system was also piloted so that students and families could "order" their food similar to what you might experience using Instacart. This resulted in more than 2,000 visits to the Trojan Market by our students. Thank you to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida for their support and providing much of the food.

Summer wellness tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle!

A

lthough living in Florida every day can feel like summer with the heat we experience, once the calendar hits June, we experience a different kind of heat. However, now is not the time to slow down or ignore your wellness goals. Summer's longer days and bright sunshine tend to help us enjoy improved moods and can help us achieve better diets and new fitness goals. Now is the perfect time to embrace the feel-good energy of the season for your healthiest summer yet.

Whether traveling or enjoying a beach day, here are some tips and tricks to keep you fit and healthy all season long. Be creative in finding everything you need to support your well-being and beat the summer heat.

So what can you do to embrace wellness during the summer? Try some of these tips.

Eating - With produce at its peak during the summer months, now is the perfect time to indulge in nature’s finest by eating the freshest vegetables and fruit.

• Expand your palate by trying new recipes that include seasonal foods you can’t get yearround.

• Get on the grill - from pears to pineapple, grilled fruit to really bring out the flavor.

• Summertime smoothies are a great way to get your daily requirement of fruits and veggies.

• Use portion control - Let's be realistic! Healthy eating does not mean cutting out all of your favorite foods, but it doesn’t mean you can eat whatever you want. For those few unhealthy items that you can’t live without (like ice cream), use moderation and stick to one serving a few times a week.

Exercise - The summer heat can be a major drawback for people looking to work out in the summer.

If you're not careful, you can suffer from a heat-related health condition such as a heat stroke, heat exhaustion, or extreme dehydration, all of which can greatly derail you from your fitness goals.

• Wear light clothing - Bright colors are good since they will reflect the sun and also help to make you more visible to oncoming traffic. Also, consider opting for sweat-wicking shirts and shorts to keep cool.

• Don’t forget the sunscreen- Stop the burn before it occurs by slathering on the sunscreen.

Look for sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50 and one that is water-proof so that it doesn’t come off once you start sweating.

• Timing is everything - 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. is the hottest time of the day in the summer. If you’re planning an outdoor workout, try to do it either before or after this time slot.

• Don’t fear the water - Summer is the perfect time to make water your friend, especially on hot days; try adding a water activity like water aerobics to your workout schedule.

Kale Salad Ingredients • • • • •

½ cup pecans 8 ounces kale ½ cup dried cranberries (or dried cherries) 1 medium Granny Smith apple 2 ounces soft goat cheese, chilled

Dressing • • • • •

3 tablespoons olive oil 1 ½ tablespoons apple cider vinegar (or white wine vinegar) 1 tablespoon smooth Dijon mustard 1 ½ teaspoons honey or maple syrup Sea salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

Preparation 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spread the pecans on a baking tray. Toast them until lightly golden and fragrant, about 5 to 10 minutes, tossing them once or twice to make sure they bake evenly. Remove the tray from the oven and set them aside to cool.

2. Pull the kale leaves off from the tough stems and discard the stems.

Use a chef’s knife to chop the kale into small, bite-sized pieces. Transfer the kale to a big salad bowl. Sprinkle a small pinch of sea salt over the kale and massage the leaves with your hands by lightly scrunching big handfuls at a time, until the leaves are darker in color and fragrant.

3. Coarsely chop the pecans and cranberries (or cherries) and add them to the bowl. Chop the apple into small, bite-sized pieces and add it to the bowl as well. Crumble the goat cheese over the top.

4. In a small bowl, whisk the dressing ingredients together and pour the dressing over the salad.

Toss until the salad is evenly coated with dressing. Serve immediately, or for even better flavor, let the salad marinate in the dressing for 10 to 20 minutes beforehand.

Serve and enjoy!

s a child growing up, and ever since I can remember, I have been told, “you just like your father.” I can remember going into my parent’s bedroom on occasion because they had a big mirror hanging behind the door and glaring at it and thinking to myself, what are people thinking? “I look nothing like him.” Fast-forward some 30+ years later, and I have my own son (who is 18 years old), and now the comments I get from people when they meet him is, “he looks just like you .” I get a kick out of it, and as crazy as it sounds, I honestly don’t see it! I think he is an extremely handsome young man, so I take it as a compliment that people think we look alike, but I think he has his own looks. When he was growing up, what amazed me were his mannerisms and some of the things he did that I did around his age, like sucking his tongue, grinding his teeth, or love for chocolate milk. I never told him or showed him any of that. Still, he picked it up somehow, which intrigued me and made me recollect about the “nature vs. nurture phenomenon .”Fathers play such an integral role in the lives of children.

Mothers do an incredible job nurturing, kissing bruises, and serving as the “glue” that holds the family together. Fathers, I believe, are designed to be protectors, providers, and the foundation for which the family is built.

One of my all-time favorite movies is The Pursuit of Happyness, a 2006 movie starring Will Smith (years before “The Slap”). The semi-autobiographical film is about a single father who is raising his son. He is down on his luck, and after his wife leaves him, he is forced into survival mode, sleeping in train station bathrooms and shelters. While I enjoy the movie, it is tough for me athers play such to watch due to the painful moments that Smith’s character must an integral role in endure throughout the movie. I put myself in his shoes and wonder what I would do? What lengths would I take to ensure my children the lives of children. had a roof over their heads, a bed to sleep in, and food on the table.

As I’m sure many of us can relate, there have been times when the paycheck wasn’t enough, and there was more going out than coming in, and only by the grace of God did you make it through. We all want the best for our children. The best schools, the best activities, and the best opportunities to grow up to be educated, well-rounded children with the best possible potential to be successful adults. But what happens when those expectations don’t meet reality? What do you do? Now while I am nowhere near being close to the plot in the movie, I am somewhat motivated to never be in that position. There is no doubt that I am busy with the many hats that I wear. I am in pursuit of greatness! I want to set an example for my children to follow. I need them to know that nothing will come easy, and you have and that there is no substitute for hard work.

Summer is a time for a fun, but it can also present moments for learning. While school is out, introduce your child to the building blocks of financial literacy with age-appropriate learning opportunities centered on their summertime activities.

Elementary School

Summer is the perfect time for a neighborhood lemonade stand. If your child is earning money by selling homemade lemonade and treats from your driveway, encourage them to set goals for their earnings.

Saving: Has your child expressed interest in a new toy that is on the pricier side? Show them how to save up for it. First, place their hard-earned money into a piggy bank or a wallet of their own so they can see how much they have.

Spending: When your child is ready to make their purchase, do the shopping together. At the register, let them give the money to the cashier and place any change back into their wallet. This puts value on their money.

Planning: Before doing any of the above, have a money chat with your child. Show them how much they made at their lemonade stand. Then weigh the options of purchasing an item they want now versus saving for an item they may want later.

Middle School

Maybe your child is taking on small jobs, like weeding the neighbor’s garden, or earning an allowance for completing chores. This is a great opportunity to show them the benefits of building their savings.

Saving: Encourage saving by matching a percentage of your child’s savings contributions each month.

Start with 10% and increase it as they get older. Place their money in a jar labeled “earnings” and your contribution in a jar labeled “dividends.” This allows them to see the extra money they earn by saving while teaching them a new financial term.

Spending: Ask your child to contribute to small purchases, such as a candy bar at the checkout line or movie snacks. Seeing the money come out of their savings jar will show them how even the smallest purchase can add up.

Planning: Introduce the concept of a budget by getting your child’s help in planning for a summer get-together. Create the menu, set the amount you will be spending, and shop together. See how under budget you can get by shopping weekly sales.

High School

At this point, your child may be working a summer job and earning a regular income. Build on the basics you’ve taught them by integrating financial services.

Saving: Help your child open a checking account with a local financial institution for direct deposit of their paycheck and to build their money management skills.

Spending: If the financial institution allows, get your child a debit card for their account that you can monitor. Then encourage them to check their account often to review transactions and the account balance.

Planning: Watching money go into and out of their account can help your child budget for necessary expenses, such as gas if they have a car, as well as items that they want. The account balance is a solid visual that can help your child weigh their needs against their wants.

There are many ways you can teach financial literacy this summer. Just keep your lessons practical and fun!
