Dear Reader—

A well-known saying of Confucius, although of doubtful anthenticity, is “May you live in interesting times.”

Intended more than likely as a blessing, the adage is better known as the Confucius curse.

Whether curse or blessing, there is little doubt that the times in which we live fulfill the meaning of 'interesting'? When we take account of the extraordinary events and experiences of the past year, it is no easy task to differentiate the good from the bad and the ugly.

Despite achieving remarkable economic progress, the economy took a deep dive into uncharted territory thanks to a virus visited upon the nation like some stealthy thief in the night. Wreaking havoc on the nation’s health and on both the livelihood and well-being of the vulnerable, the resulting contagion also made loners of us all. And, as if in imitation of that havoc, gangs laid waste to some inner cities while also tearing at the social fabric with their inflamed rhetoric and violence.

Who could have imagined or foretold this climate just one year ago? Many people will continue to struggle as the economy sputters along the road to recovery. Others will suffer from Covid-19 and from the effects of isolation.

Thankfully, no one should go hungry. Many churches, civic organizations, non-profits. agencies, businesses and local volunteers of all ages, young and old, have been packing and distributing large quantities of food on a regular basis. We cannot possibley name them all, but they include Second Harvest, Feed the Need, United Foundation of Central Florida, area churches along with the Sheriff’s Office, and officials partnering with area businesses and civic groups to help sort, pack and distribute assembled food products.

Yes, these are interesting times, but rather than drifting apart, as the political pundits warn, it has also become an opportune time for coming together in service to our common humanity—and thus a blessing. 

THE MASK - Safeguard,Symbol or Both

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) advises that a mask limits one’s exposure to the viral contagion and also protects the vulnerable from our own potential spread of the disease. That’s the obvious and practical purpose for the mask, but like so many other things in life, mask-wearing has a rather checkered history largely due to its varying symbolism over time  Among the ancient Greeks an actor could vanish into his role by putting on a mask.

Indeed, the Greek word for mask is ‘persona’. The mask became the personification of the role played by the actor. The mask both disguises and reveals, as we know from our own experience at Halloween, when the “tricks or treaters” appear with the persona of a fearsome or funny character, but they are just the neighborhood kids engaging in a bit of the-

ater of their own.  Exactly the same phenomenon occurs when adults attend a masquerade ball or frolic on Bourbon Street during Fat Tuesday celebrations.  Many ancient cultures observed rituals in mask and costume to represent supernatural beings and ancestral figures.  But the mask’s function as disguise to hide a person’s true identity is more common—think of the masked bandit, the executioner and even the present-day protester bent on destruction rather than peaceful, civic action.  With the increasing prominence of identity politics as a result of which one’s facial appearance became regarded as an indicator of destiny, perhaps the mask serves both as an antidote against the viral spread of Covid-19 but also against the viral spread of that cultural toxin, identity politics. 

Will 'Vision 2050' Benefit Pine Hills?

n compliance with the federal requirement to implement a comprehensive plan to manage growth and guide public investment, Orange County is launching Vision 2050 to substantially restructure its Comprehensive Plan through the adoption of a new Land Development Code.

The program is encouraging from the standpoint of citizen participation which is actively sought, but also more specifically for the future of our greater Pine Hills area. The plan seeks to direct “growth to previously urbanized areas that are located near existing or planned transit corridors” and to "promote new and intensifed urban development through infill and redevelopment with a greater mix of uses and enhanced walkability.” Those criteria would appear to favor this area.

Also, of the Place Types to be focussed on, Pine Hills appears to conform to two of the three types, namely Corridors and Neighborhoods.

However, the Vision 2050 plan defaults to the Maintain strategy rather than either

Transform,Evolve or Grow, which means that the existing character of an area would not change, i.e. business as usual.The Vision 2050 website actually refers to this strategy as applicable to “most of Orange County’s geographic extent." Seems that Vision 2050 will apply only to a select few areas.

The window for online citizen input is already past, but townhalls are promised as a next step. So stay tuned and prepared to speak your mind about the many plans and promises made for Pine Hills that have yet to become reality.

eople in the greater unincorporated Pine Hills area have benefited for months from good access to Covid testing, masks and flu vaccines. With a combined population base over 100,000, this preparedness has allowed us to get ready for the flu season, to quarantine and to seek the necessary treatments for combating infections and reducing the spread of the virus. Both molecular (standard nasal swab/PCR) and rapid antigen tests are available. 

The People’s Business ~ App for Rapid Testing Results Announced by FL Department of Health

T

he Department is excited to announce the launch of a mobile application (app) that will deliver COVID-19 laboratory test results quickly and securely to Florida residents. Developed in partnership with mobile app developer Twenty, the Healthy Together app will send test results to residents who receive COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing in Florida.

Once test results are received by the Department, a text message will be sent from the number 78549 to the phone number provided during the testing process.

Recipients of the text message will be able to download Healthy Together and enter their date of birth and the phone number they provided during testing for authentication purposes to ensure the confidentiality of their results. Results will then be available in the app. The app can also be downloaded by going to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and searching for Healthy Together.

2020: The Year of the Coronavirus

T

he year 2020 will go down in history as a year of marked change. As the dawn of the new decade arrived, there was a noted sense of hope, optimism and vision. After all, it was the year 2020 - perfect vision. However, no one had the foresight to predict what we were about to face. Ever since the unfortunate helicopter tragedy that took the life of beloved, NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, his beautiful daughter Gianna and the other seven souls on that fateful January day, our entire world turned upside down.

On January 21, 2020, the first case of a new coronavirus strain called COVID-19, which had sickened nearly 300 people in Asia, was reported in a patient in Washington State.

Little did we know that in just two short months, our entire country would be facing a war unlike it had ever seen before, an invisible enemy that was airborne. As news of the virus spread, at every step, we were left trying to figure out what to do to protect ourselves and our loved ones. As of the date of this printing, there have been over 261,000 confirmed COVID-19 deaths in the United States. In Florida, there have been over 18,000 deaths. The numbers are undeniably alarming and heartbreaking. However, if you take a closer look at the numbers, when you begin to drill down on how the disease has affected minority populations, the numbers paint an even more dire picture.

One organization, the APM Research Lab, which is made up of researchers who work to inform the public with both original and curated research, facts and analysis, maintains ongoing data into a project called The Color of Coronavirus: Covid-19 Deaths by Race and Ethnicity in the U.S. According to the project data, Black Americans have the highest actual COVID-19 mortality rates in the country. One in 875 Black Americans has died (or 114.3 deaths per 100,000). Unfortunately

when compared to White Americans, the latest U.S. ageadjusted COVID-19 mortality rate for Blacks is 3 times as high.

Inequities in the social determinants of health, including areas such as education, poverty and access to healthcare access, have had a direct effect on the outcome of the disease in minority communities. These are barriers that will not vanish overnight. Deliberate efforts need to be placed on different groups, including our local health departments, schools, community and faith-based organizations, to work together to connect people to healthcare resources that will help them get the testing, treatment and medicines they need.

Recent news about the efficacy of vaccine trials appear to be promising, which introduces yet another potential concern. The matter of trust has always been an issue in African American communities in regard to vaccines and immunizations due to past history, including the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment. Because of this, working with trusted sources will be pivotal in helping to share information in formats and languages suitable for diverse audiences.

In the end, we all want to get back to a sense of “normalcy” – how things were before 2020. So much of what we hold dear has been uprooted.

Even the upcoming holiday season is already proving to be atypical with discussions surrounding limited family gatherings or even cancellations altogether. It is with renewed faith and optimism that as we approach the New Year, we can finally hit the reset button and begin looking at COVID-19 through the rear view mirror. In Health, Glen R. Virtual Community Conference Recognizes Pine Hills Leadership , Youth and Neighborhood Activism

his year’s Orange County Community Conference, was held virtually on the County’s social media platforms. Hosted by Orange TV, viewers watched workshops related to COVID-19, neighborhood enhancement projects and chatted with Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings.

District 2 Citizen of the Year– Leigh Blackwelder Burritt is a dedicated community servant, who has spent countless hours researching and interviewing individuals to compile information for more than 50 historic and environmental sites in District 2. District 6 Citizen of the Year – Deby Smith was instrumental in helping secure a traffic signal at the intersection of Oak Ridge Road and Chancellor Drive to relieve traffic obstruction and unreasonable delays for Oak Hill Manor residents attempting to enter or leave their subdivision.

Orange County Announces ‘Re-Establishment Day’as Annual Event in December for the People of Pine Hills

Deserving residents and organizations that continue to work diligently to improve the quality of life in Orange County, either through their professional work or volunteer activities were also recognized.

Candice Jones, M.D., was awarded the Mayor’s 2020 Distinguished Citizen of the Year. Dr. Jones is a boardcertified physician and practices as a general pediatrician in the Pine Hills community. As a leader and advocate for pediatric healthcare, she provides a standard of care that enriches the lives of thousands of children and parents in the community. She has also made it her mission to provide innovative/virtual tools (especially during COVID) to local residents to ensure they remain informed, educated and empowered on healthcare matters.

The Little Angel Angelina And how reindeer first began to fly

nations and continents. Others were childsized, to avoid frightening even the youngest of boys and girls they were assigned to watch over.

Angelina was surely among the smallest. Her duty was to raise the spirits of sad and lonely children.

Because angels are made entirely of light and are able to travel very fast, she could bring encouragement and good cheer to many children in a very short time, There was just one problem.

Because Angelina was so small, she did not have knowledge of whole nations and continents like the much bigger angels. As a result, Angelina frequently needed help locating all the children she was appointed to visit.

So, every time Archangel Michael sent her on an angelic mission, Angelina had to ask other angels for directions.

Now it happened that during one of these journeys, Archangel Gabriel announced a momentous event about to take place on earth. It was such an important occasion that Archangel Michael commanded every angel to be present. No excuses.

Well, Angelina would often linger for a while with children whose sadness was not so easily turned to joy. But this time her late return home found only a few angels left in all the heavenly realm.

On hearing about Gabriel’s announcement, Angelina prevailed upon one of them to give her the details.

The angel replied, “Have you forgotten why we have been practicing mass choir?”

“Did I miss something?” Angelina asked.

“Where has everyone gone?”

“ They are on the way to Bethlehem, where the heavenly Father has sent his Son as a new-born child. Nothing like this has happened 2 2 / THE MIDTO W N P R E SS

since the beginning of time. We’ve got to leave right now. We would not want to miss this most glorious occasion.”

Angelina was hesitant because she had never been to Bethlehem. So she called after another angel, who had already taken wing, for directions.

As the angel departed, he yelled back, “Look for the brightest star in the sky as a guide for you.”

Still uncertain about the destination, but earnestly wishing to catch up with the others, Angelina left instantly to locate the brightest star.

More swiftly than a flash of lightning, Angelina descended to earth. In her haste, she thought that she had caught a glimpse of the star, but there were no other angels where she landed. In fact, there was nothing at all there, except what seemed like millions of stars overhead. It was the middle of night and bitterly cold on the frozen plain where she stood, alone and lost.

“How will I ever find the way?” Angelina wondered. “ There are so many bright stars.

How shall I ever find the right one?”

Angelina was not one to give up hope. So she began to pray silently that somehow she would find Bethlehem in time to celebrate the Christ Child’s birth. Then she heard a crunch-crunch sound approaching.

Peering into the night, she could see a shadowy figure in the luster of starlight on the snow and ice. It was very large and strangely shaped.

Angelina called at it, “What are you? What do you want?” She did not know whether to fly away, or to get closer. But when the figure came near she could tell it was a reindeer.

Sensing her uneasiness, he said “It’s okay, little angel, why are you here in this frozen place?”

“I am looking for a special star, but there are so many. I think I’m lost,” Angelina said.

Wanting to help, Reindeer asked, “Where are

you going?

“A place called Bethlehem,” she replied.

“You mean where the Christ Child will be born?” Reindeer asked.

Excitedly, Angelina said “Yes, but how could you know that?”

“Oh, all the animals know that. It’s just too far for us to go there and back again without a very long, difficult journey!” Reindeer exclaimed.

“Do you mean that you know how to go to Bethlehem without a guiding star?” she asked.

“Why certainly!” Reindeer stated confidently. “ That’s just natural know-how in the animal kingdom.”

Angelina thought a moment.

Then, startling Reindeer with her excitement, she cried out happily, “Maybe I’m not lost after all!”

She hopped to his back, grabbed the antlers and yelled “Away!” so loud that the echo came back in waves of repeated AWAYs.

But Reindeer was confused: “I don’t understand. You are welcome to ride, but it would take weeks to go to Bethlehem.”

“Don’t worry,” Angelina assured Reindeer. “ Together, we can fly there in no time, but you will have to guide, because I don’t know the way.”

Reindeer was not quite sure what it meant to fly. Leaping and bounding were

the nearest thing he could imagine, but he agreed to do his best if Angelina was so sure that together they could make it to Bethlehem.

Still astride Reindeer ’s back, and with a firm hold on his antlers, Angelina cried out again, “Away, Reindeer, away!”

And away they flew, effortlessly, into the starlit night.

In mere moments, the pair came to rest by a manger in Bethlehem.

There was a small gathering of shepherds and a flock of farm animals nearby.

Angelina thanked Reindeer for his generosity and accurate direction, but then glided quickly into place among the heavenly host of angels, who began singing, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men of goodwill.”

Reindeer listened attentively to the angelic sounds of the heavenly choir while standing alone before the newborn Christ Child. Aware that he was the only reindeer, he marveled at his being there at all on this wondrous and joy-filled night.

From that first Christmas night and ever after, reindeer have been said to fly—especially to bring happiness to little children, just as the little angel Angelina had done.

The wealth of talent and professional expertise in Pine Hills youths have produced many publicly acclaimed leaders by its high school, Evans High.

Pine Hills went from a beautiful suburban community, then to a state of decline and now has re-evolved and blossomed to a beautiful community where residents can raise their family, own a home and be proud of their community. This took a lot of hard work, perseverance and patience.

There were a lot of negative obstacles in the way. However, our Pine Hills Community was able to weather the storm and conquer the obstacles.

We have come a long way. As we continue the work this Proclamation will remind us all how special our community is—that it is a safe and stable community

FOOD DISTRIBUTION...

A GIFT OF HOPE IN TIMES OF NEED

F

or many people, these times are difficult. There are scarce resources, often no work and many mouths to feed. As a volunteer for weekly food distribution at 6001 Silver Star Road, it quickly became apparent that the local need is deeper and greater than what appears on the surface. Cars begin lining up hours before the start time as volunteers start their job of collect-

ing, organizing and packing up bags and items to be handed out.

Somewhere between 250 and 300 vehicles will eventually drive through to receive supplies and, with few exceptions, all are very appreciative. Many are older, some come with family or friends and they represent a wide diversity of cultures and ethnic backgrounds.

To make this happen a network of local people of all ages have regularly attended over a period of almost 6 month to help support and distribute the weekly supplies. Community partners, such as Feed the Need and others, help fund and provide food for distribution. Initiatied by United Foundation of Central Florida (UFCF) the 6001 location has serviced to date 16,650 families and 83,250 individuals. According to UFCF President, Sandra Fatmi-Hall, she plans to continue

holding the food distribution every Thursday at 10 a.m. at the 6001 Silver Star Road Ste 1 until December 22nd.

On the last day the food distribution team plans a final ending celebration for Christmas with a tree, decoration, music and other items.To donate or for more information, contact Sandra Fatmi-Hall at 770-789-7004.

Democracy or Mobocracy?

S

o much of today's debate and dissent reveals a failure of education and lack of understanding, or both, of the nature of our government. the Electoral College is seen as a relic of ancient history, but its purpose is to preserve representative government, not to undermine it. It was established by the U.S. Constitution in Article II, Section 1, Clause 2 and modified by the 12th and 23rd Amendments.

To put it in the most concise terms, the Electoral College assures that the large population centers on both coasts do no control our representation at the federal level. The coastal, urban centers comprise concentrations of wealth, institutions and population. Without the Electoral College, the rest of the nation would become a political backwater (“flyover country”) with no influence whatsoever on the presidential election and would pose the risk of a potential break-up of the union.

The Founders struck a very delicate balance to prevent a “mob-ocracy” takeover of our “demo-cracy” by creating a Constitutional Federal Republic that distributes power equitably. They called it “a more perfect union” because they conceived of its structure as a means of correcting the flaws that brought previous governments to ruin.

In short, the people do not govern themselves directly but rather through elected representatives.

The presidential election is the closest our electoral process comes to a pure democracy.

To prevent it from fostering a “mobocracy” and to preserve states' rights (the federal structure) the Electoral College accords a favored status to the

The structure of our government is the product of pure genius and should be revered and protected as a profound legacy and also as the quarantor of a government that is answerable to all the people, not just to some coastal elites.
