Twilight

REVIEW

Synopsis: Teen girl, Bella Swan, moves to Washington, and starts at a new school where meets a boy named Edward Cullen. When Bella finds out he is a vampire, she is intrigued, but, unaware of the dangers he may bring.

The book was turned into a movie in 2008, with Robert Patterson and Kristen Stewart playing the leading roles.

The Twilight movies made over $3 billion and the 'Twilight' franchise is one of the most popular movie franchises of all time!

The first book in the series has dry language and repetitive words and phrases. There are only so many times you can read "he growled" or "he chuckled" before it gets dull. Some scenes dragged out, making the book hard to stick with. Despite this, the strong character development kept me hooked. I'm talking about Edward, obviously. Bella is as dry as the popcorn they give you at the ANU school holiday program movie incursion. I'm looking forward to reading the second book, New Moon.

VAPES

Addiction, one of the first things that comes with using a vape pen. Vapes feels cleaner because of the fruity smells and the loss of

tobacco. However, there is no reason to start vaping. In a singular vape there are around 50 cigarettes!

With, vaping you may feel symptoms such as being light headed, shaking, headaches, coughing up blood and shortness of breath. Vaping can cause permanent lung damage and causes 'popcorn lung' which causes coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.

Many people state that the reason that they started to vape is because of the amount of stress you have.

INTERNATIONAL Women's Day

On International Women's Day, we celebrate the incredible achievements and progress that women have made throughout history. From the suffragettes fighting for the right to vote, to the many women who have shattered glass ceilings in the workplace, women have proven time and time again that they are a force to be reckoned with.

But let's be real, women are pretty amazing every day of the year. They are the ones who can simultaneously manage a successful career, raise a family, and still find time to save the world. So, in honour of International Women's Day, let's take a look at some of the fun and inspiring things women have accomplished.

Did you know that the first computer programmer was a woman? Ada Lovelace, born in 1815, worked alongside Charles Babbage to develop the first algorithm that could be processed by a machine. Today, she is considered a pioneer of computer programming, and her legacy continues to inspire women in STEM fields.

Speaking of STEM, did you know that the first person to identify a black hole was a woman? In 1967, Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered a pulsating radio signal that she initially thought was interference. However, after months of analysing the data, she realized that the signal was actually coming from a previously unknown celestial object - a pulsar. This discovery eventually led to the identification of black holes and earned Burnell numerous awards and prizes.

And let's not forget the women who have made their mark in sports. Billie Jean King, for example, is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time, winning 39 Grand Slam titles throughout her career. But King is perhaps best known for her role in advancing women's rights in sports. In 1973, she defeated Bobby Riggs in the famous "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match, showing the world that women were just as capable as men.

Of course, women have also made a huge impact in the world of entertainment. Beyoncé, for example, has become an icon of female empowerment, using her music and platform to advocate for social justice and gender equality. And let's not forget about the many women who have broken down barriers in the film industry, such as Kathryn Bigelow, who became the first woman to win an Academy Award for Best Director in 2010.

So, on International Women's Day, let's take a moment to celebrate all the amazing things that women have accomplished. And let's not forget that there is still work to be done to achieve true gender equality. Let's keep pushing forward and supporting each other in our quest for a better future.

Fashion Staples through the decades (1900s-2000s)

1900s:

The style did not change much from the 1980s. Modest dresses were fashionable as well as corsets and showy ornamentation. The desirable silhouette was an 'S' shape.

1910s:

WW1 changed everything including fashion. A Softer, more natural silhouette was in style. Skirts began to taper towards the bottom and by the end of the decade, there was a completely new style. Later in the decade, the empire waist became popular.

1920s:

In this decade clothing was all about simplicity (partly due to WW1).Shorter skirts and simple shapes with a Tubular silhouette was now what everyone wanted. The Dropped waist was popular until 1923 and then rose again. Hemlines rose until 1926 and then dropped again. This style is known as “flapper” style. Short hair also became fashionable and a boy-ish figure was preferable.

d

1950s:

Dresses with a nippedin waist and full skirt were the style this decade. However, as the decade moved on the desired silhouette become straighter and slimmer and inspiration was drawn from what was known as the “teenager” style. Also, the pattern of the decade was… POLKA DOTS!!!

1940s: WW2 stalled fashion as resources were all used in the war and a huge amount of the fabric available was used to make parachutes and other necessities.

Both men and women were usually in uniform. The skirts of this decade were knee length and sleek.

1960:

This decade was all about fun, bright and colourful designs. Mini skirts were the most popular trend, but multiple styles became popular and the 'hippie' style was born. The first lady (USA) Jacqueline was a fashion icon, meaning whatever she wore became trendy. This was mainly colourful suits and skirts.

1980s:

This decade was the definition of “power dressing.” Shoulder pads and suits were one of the many staples of the decade. The other side of the 80s included bright colourful clothing and makeup looks with what is seen today as crazy haircuts. There was also the sportswear craze of leotards and legwarmers. Princess Diana was the style icon of the 80s.

1990:

The 90s mainstream style was casual and minimalistic, the opposite of the 80s. This decade was known as 'heroin chic' and "The perfect body" was all that everyone wanted. Blazers were still popular and unique hats went with them hand in hand. The 'Grunge' style was also a big part of the 90s.

2000s:

The 2000s, also known as Y2K, had staples that are coming back today, the most prominent of them being low rise jeans. At the beginning of the decade, new technology inspired fashion with metallic silvers, blacks, and the use of straps and belts. A matrixesque look. Showing skin with tight crop tops and miniskirts was also a very popular look. Britany Spears was the trend-setter for this decade.
