AUSTRALIA’S UNDER-16S SOCIAL MEDIA BAN

Australia plans to ban under-16s from social media by December 2025, but enforcing it is proving difficult. A government-backed trial is testing age assurance technologies like facial recognition and hand-movement tracking; however, these tools are often inaccurate, easy to bypass, and raise major privacy concerns, especially for children.

Big tech firms like Apple and Google are largely uncooperative. Apple hasn’t responded to outreach, and Google’s proposed ID-linked system lacks privacy safeguards and cross-platform use, especially with competitors like Meta opting out. While the ban shifts internet regulation toward restricting communication platforms rather than just content, critics argue it limits children’s rights without addressing the root causes of online harm. Without tech giants' support, the trial’s effectiveness and the ban’s success remain uncertain.

StickyDatePudding

A comforting winter recipe

Ingredients:

250g pitted dates, chopped

1 tsp Coles Bicarbonate Soda

1 1/2 cups boiling water

125g Lurpak unsalted butter, softened

1 cup brown sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 eggs

1 3/4 cups self-raising flour, sifted Caramel Sauce

1 cup brown sugar

300ml thickened cream

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

60g butter

Instructions:

Start by preheating your oven to 180°Celcius. Then, grease and line the base of a 7cm deep, 22cm (base) cake pan.

In a large bowl bowl, place dates and bicarbonate of soda. Pour over boiling water. Allow to stand for 20 minutes.

Using an electric mixer, mix butter, sugar and vanilla until pale and creamy. Add the eggs each one at a time, beating well. Using a large spoon, fold through date mixture and flour until well combined.

Pour mixture into prepared cake pan. Bake for 40 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. Turn onto a plate.

To make sauce: Combine all sauce ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Mix, stirring often, until sauce comes to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 2 minutes.

Pierce pudding all over with a skewer. Pour 1/2 cup of warm sauce over warm pudding. Stand for 10 minutes. Cut into wedges. Serve with remaining sauce.
