From a family paint shop in Sheffield to performing in front of half a million people in Berlin and writing songs that have become global classics, Paul Carrack’s remarkable musical journey has been celebrated in his home city. The Legendary singer, songwriter and multiinstrumentalist was honoured with a Sheffield Legends plaque outside Sheffield Town Hall last week, recognising a career that has spanned more than five decades and established him as one of Britain’s most respected and enduring musical talents. Known worldwide as “The Man with the Golden Voice”, the Sheffield-born
released 19 studio albums, written songs recorded by artists including Diana Ross and Sir Tom Jones, and performed alongside an extraordinary roll call of music legends including Eric Clapton, Elton John, Ringo Starr, B.B. King, The Smiths, Madness, Roxy Music and The Pretenders. His career has also been woven into major moments in global history. In 1990, following the fall of the Berlin Wall, Carrack was personally selected by Roger Waters to perform at The Wall Live in Berlin, singing before a crowd of more than 500,000 people and a television audience of millions around the world. Despite his international success, Carrack has remained proudly

From penning the timeless hit How Long and co-writing global favourites including Love Will Keep Us Alive and Over My Shoulder, to lending his unmistakable voice and musicianship to some of the biggest names in music, Carrack’s influence has been felt across generations and continents. The 75-year-old’s rise to international fame began in humble circumstances. Teaching himself to play drums and organ in his family’s paint shop, Carrack developed a passion and talent that would take him from Sheffield to some of the world’s most iconic stages. Over the years, he has
connected to Sheffield throughout his life and career. Speaking about his new honour Carrack said: “I’m sure there are hundreds of Sheffield men and women who have served this great city well and are far more worthy of this award than me, but I accept it in honour of my late father and mother, my brother John, my grandparents, my aunts, uncles and cousins – all of them solid Sheffield folk who instilled in me the values of honesty, determination, hard work, humility and love. Values that have served me well in my life and career.” The honour comes at another milestone moment for Carrack, who recently released his latest
studio album, The Country Side of Paul Carrack Vol 2, on 7 August 2026. The album continues a remarkable independent career that has seen Carrack successfully build and run his own label, Carrack-UK, for more than two decades, giving him complete creative control over his music while maintaining a loyal fanbase across the world. The plaque was unveiled outside Sheffield Town Hall on Tuesday 4 August, with Paul Carrack being joined by family, friends, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield and civic leaders. The unveiling is the second in the latest series of Sheffield Legends honours, with further announcements expected in the coming months.

FUNDING FOR GRASSROOTS SPORTS CLUBS ACROSS SOUTH YORKSHIRE Grassroots sports clubs across Yorkshire are being urged to apply for funding from Aldi, as the supermarket brings its support for local sport together under one Aldi Sports Fund programme. Eligible clubs could receive funding to help cover essential costs such as equipment, kits, coaching, training programmes and facility hire. This development comes as part of Aldi’s drive to support sport at every level, from local clubs through to Britain’s Olympic and

abbeydale dam repairs supertram works commence doncaster great bear hunt Sheffield City Council is celebrating the successful completion of the £1.3 million restoration of Abbeydale Dam and the adjacent grinding hull at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, marking a significant milestone in the protection of one of the city’s most important historic assets. The project has addressed serious structural issues that threatened the integrity of the 18th-century dam, which forms a vital part of Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet – a Scheduled Monument and one of the most complete surviving water-powered industrial works in the world. Back in 2021, substantial leaks emerged in the dam’s north-east corner, resulting in water flowing through the structure and creating dangerous pressure behind the walls. Emergency measures were implemented to lower water levels and stabilise the dam, but a permanent solution was required to safeguard the historic site and prevent further deterioration. Working in partnership with Sheffield Museums and specialist contractor Esh Construction, Sheffield City Council has now completed an extensive programme of repairs. The works included rebuilding and repointing displaced stonework using traditional stonemasonry techniques, installing clay linings and waterproof membranes to prevent future leaks, grouting voids within the structure, and undertaking repairs to the grinding hull and associated infrastructure. Cllr Brian Holmshaw said: “This marks an historic moment in the long history of the scythe and steelworks at Abbeydale. Addressing this has saved one of the cornerstones of Britain’s industrial revolution. I’m delighted to see that this project has been completed and the hamlet is open for future generations to visit, learn from and enjoy.” With the structural works now complete, attention is turning to the careful refilling of the millpond. Following ecological assessments undertaken by Sheffield City Council’s ecology team, refilling will not begin until September to ensure compliance with legislation protecting breeding birds and
to minimise impacts on wildlife, including insects and other species that have established themselves within the drained pond area. Before refilling can commence, larger vegetation including willow and elder trees that have become established within the pond bed will be removed to help reduce future silting and improve the long-term management of the pond. These works will also take place after the bird breeding season and will be undertaken by specialist contractor Horticon. Once vegetation clearance is complete, the sluice from the weir can be reopened and the pond will be refilled gradually. A slow refill approach has been recommended to allow animals and insects sufficient time to relocate as water levels rise, while also helping to minimise impacts downstream and ensuring compliance with current Environment Agency requirements. In the meantime, pumps will remain in operation to manage the flow entering the site from Ecclesall Woods. This watercourse is separate from the dam sluice and helps maintain existing water management arrangements until the refill process begins. The Council is continuing discussions with stakeholders on future management considerations, including whether fish should be reintroduced to the pond once refilling is complete. The authority will also continue to monitor river levels ahead of September, recognising that prolonged dry weather conditions could affect water availability. Any future proposals relating to the wider water management system, including potential changes to the weir, would require further technical assessment, including detailed hydrological studies. The completion of the repair programme represents a major investment in Sheffield’s industrial heritage and ensures that Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet remains protected, operational and ready to continue inspiring future generations with the story of the city’s manufacturing past. Preparations are also underway that will see the Hamlet’s waterwheels back in action from next spring.
Major Supertram improvements got underway last weekend, as part of a wider £110 million investment to improve the network. The essential works will focus on renewing the major junction of all tram routes, known as the Delta junction, which sits within the Park Square roundabout, near to Hyde Park and Fitzalan Square, in Sheffield city centre. The Delta junction is of vital importance to the network with over 440 trams running across it every day, serving all lines on the network. The works - which will run from Saturday 8 August to Monday 31 August - will involve installing new track, points, signalling equipment and pedestrian crossings. Works will also take place near Hyde Park to replace the tracks as they cross Bernard Road. The £3.5 million of improvements this summer are part of South Yorkshire’s wider People’s Network vision – creating a better-connected public transport system that makes it easier, greener and more reliable for people to travel. Investing in Supertram is a key part of building a network that links communities to jobs, education and opportunities. Whilst Blue, Yellow, Purple and Tram Train services will continue to run, all services across the network will be subject to changes to their routes and timetables to accommodate the works. Replacement buses will be provided to help keep people moving to those areas which cannot be served by the tram network. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys. The works have been scheduled during the school summer holidays when passenger numbers on the network are lower. Melanie Corcoran, Executive Director of Transport at South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, said: “This multi-million pound investment we’re making will create a more reliable network for all of us who depend on Supertram every day. The investment is essential if we’re going to build a tram network that is fit for the future and will serve us well in the next 30 years. We know carrying out this work will mean some disruption during
the school holidays, and we’re grateful for everyone’s understanding while it’s completed. Supertram is at the heart of the South Yorkshire People’s Network that we’re building together – creating a public transport system that is more reliable, better connected and makes it easier for everyone to get to work, education and opportunities.” From 8 August, all tram services will operate to revised routes and timetables. Replacement buses will run between Cathedral and Granville Road for connection to the Purple and Blue routes, and between Cathedral and Woodbourn Road for the Yellow and Tram Train routes. All valid tram and multimodal tickets will be accepted for travel on the replacement bus services. Customers can buy their ticket in advance using the TSY Mobile app, or from a tram conductor. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased from the bus driver using contactless card or cash payments when boarding. Separately, children between 5-15 can travel free on the Supertram system over the month of August. Longer journey times are likely, particularly during peak periods. To minimise disruption, Supertram recommends those travelling in the area plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys. The new rails, points, signalling equipment and pedestrian crossings will give passengers a better travel experience by improving comfort, reducing noise, and minimising the risk of unplanned closures on the network.
Families are being invited to join in with a free city centre event as one of the nation’s best-loved children’s stories comes to life in the heart of Doncaster this summer. The Great Doncaster Bear Hunt is coming to Sir Nigel Gresley Square on Saturday 22nd August, 10am4pm, bringing a day of free, family-friendly storytelling, imagination and adventure by the much-loved classic ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. The event is part of the ‘South Yorkshire Mayor’s Reading Network: Little Big Book Club’, an initiative designed to inspire a love of books and reading among children and families across South Yorkshire, and is part of a wider programme of readinginspired activities in Doncaster throughout August. Young visitors will be able to follow an interactive trail through storybook scenes led by Artists from Doncaster’s participatory arts charity, darts, whilst also enjoying bear-themed crafts and activities with Doncaster Family Hubs, as well as bear facepainting, balloon modelling and much more. The day will also feature live storytelling and illustration sessions with Doncaster author and illustrator Phil Sheppard, who has created the bears featured in the event’s artwork, in collaboration with the National Literacy Trust. Families will be able to take home a special
story-themed treat and well as free books to continue the magic – and hopefully inspire their next reading adventure. The Great Doncaster Bear Hunt is taking place alongside Summer in the City, which is transforming Sir Nigel Gresley Square throughout August with seaside-inspired family fun, including sand, rides, games, activities and entertainment. The bear hunt is the showcase event for a full programme of free reading-inspired activities as part of the same initiative, which includes the Concerteenies’ ‘The Duck with No Luck’ musical tour coming to Doncaster, and ‘Tuneful Chatter on a Bear Hunt’ sessions with darts, all taking place on various dates throughout August at a range of Doncaster community spaces including Family Hubs and libraries. The full programme has been supported through the South Yorkshire Mayor’s Reading Network: Little Big Book Club, with funding from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and Mayor Oliver Coppard. All events are free to attend and drop-in, with no booking required. The event is running on Saturday 22nd August at Sir Nigel Gresley Square in Doncaster Ciry Centre, 10am-4pm (10am-11am will be designated as a SEND friendly/quiet hour).
With kindness in every stitch, an exhibition of patchwork quilts made for military veterans is proving an emotional experience for visitors at Wentworth Woodhouse. Quilts For the Longest Day, a community sewing and not-for-profit group with nimble-fingered members from across Yorkshire, is displaying its intricately-made quilts in the mansion’s Old Hall. Exhibits include a quilt especially made for Doncaster’s much-loved former paratrooper Ben Parkinson MBE, who was the most severely wounded soldier to survive the War in Afghanistan. Ben, who defied his doctors’ expectations by learning to walk and talk again, is now a veterans campaigner, author and charity worker. He has loaned his quilt made by the group to the exhibition and is also the group’s patron. Quilts For The Longest Day began as an initiative in 2023. Its founder is Lisa Birkett, a Hillsborough 53-year-old with a passion for crafting, who set up her own shop, the Happy Hare, in Chapeltown 10 years ago. Explained Lisa: “The 80th anniversary of World War II’s D-Day Landings was coming up in 2024. My greatgrandfather died in a World War I shell attack, leaving a pregnant wife. That baby went on to fight in WW2 and died in an accident coming home from war, just months after my dad was born. The anniversary meant a lot to me and I came up with an idea to make 80 patchwork quilts for local veterans. Happy Hare customers and women from local veteran groups joined me. It was a big success. We made and distributed 108 quilts and
enjoyed it so much we just kept going, setting up as a proper not-forprofit organisation. We have now made 239 quilts and 217 have been donated. They are gifted to veterans of any age.” The exhibition, Quilts For The Longest Day: A Sewing Group’s Accidental Journey, is in Wentworth Woodhouse’s Community Exhibitions Space and runs until November 14. One quilt on show features the Military Intelligence Corps, which used Wentworth Woodhouse as its headquarters and training depot in World War II. Lisa hopes the exhibition will help her reach more veterans and educate people in the time and skill the craft requires. It takes the equivalent of a week to make each one, with quilters working on a specific task on a mini production line. She is also hoping to gain a few new members. To that aim, On September 20 the group will be teaching the basics at a Sit and Sew session in the Low Drawing Room at Wentworth Woodhouse. “We can always use more hands at our quilt-making workshops at the Happy Hare. We always have a waiting list. There are 30 veterans waiting at the moment,” said Lisa. “Their faces light up when they see their quilts. They love the fact that someone has taken the time to make something especially for them. Most of the recipients are male and I have never seen so many grown men cry.” Quilts have depicted Second World War fighter planes, 21st century warships, medals, poppies and soldiers.

60% of Tramlines 2027 weekend tickets snapped up ALREADY
Following another sold-out Tramlines, excitement is already building for 2027 (23rd - 25th July), with 60% of weekend tickets snapped up and the first ticket tiers selling out within minutes. It follows an unforgettable weekend at Hillsborough Park, where 40,000 music fans each day came together for three days of global artists, grassroots talent and unmistakable Sheffield spirit. Across the weekend, festivalgoers enjoyed headline performances from Fatboy Slim, Courteeners and Wolf Alice, alongside hundreds of artists spanning established names, emerging talent and Sheffield favourites. Beyond Hillsborough Park, Tramlines on Track brought live performances to Sheffield’s tram network, while the city-wide Fringe once again transformed venues across the city into part of the festival experience.
This year’s festival was packed with standout moments. Fatboy Slim wowed fans with his first major outdoor show in Sheffield while Saturday saw thousands embrace Tramlines’ first-ever Fancy Dress Day and The Everly Pregnant Brothers paid a moving tribute to the late Sheffield photographer Glenn Ashley alongside The Leadmill Studio Orchestra. Blossoms brought out Rick Astley (who also played a standout solo set) and Reverend at The Makers included Sheffield legend Richard Hawley and rapper K Dot in their set. Festivalgoers once again praised the atmosphere, organisation and Sheffield pride across the weekend, with many highlighting standout performances, improved accessibility and the unique Sheffield feel of the event. Angela, who attended all three days, said:
“Loved it, managed all 3 days but my legs are aching today! Favourite by far was Fat Boy Slim on a Friday night. Tramlines was very well organised. You only see how well organised it is when you’ve been to a not well organised one! Beer choices were much better this year and the food was nice too. I tried something different each night.” Bobbie praised the atmosphere and inclusivity of the festival: “A real credit to Sheffield and the team behind the festival. The staff were amazing and the atmosphere was brilliant. It’s such an inclusive, multi-generational event.” Ellie highlighted the diversity of acts and accessibility improvements: “Standout act for me was Wolf Alice by far. It was great to see more women-fronted bands and modern punk acts. I also noticed more accessible areas this year, which was really nice to see.”
Timm Cleasby, Festival Director at Tramlines, said: “Every year we challenge ourselves to create a festival that feels unmistakably Sheffield, and I genuinely believe we’ve achieved that again in 2026. Seeing 40,000 people through the gates each day is incredible, but what we’re most proud of is the atmosphere those people create. Whether it was families enjoying their first Tramlines, artists like the Rosadocs reflecting on their journey through the festival, surprise performances or thousands embracing Fancy Dress Saturday, this weekend has been full of moments that simply couldn’t happen anywhere else. Tramlines has always been about much more than three days of live music. It’s about celebrating Sheffield’s creativity, supporting grassroots talent and creating opportunities for artists to grow.
