MAYOR TO HOST PUBLIC Q&A ON AIRPORT

South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, is hosting a live Q&A event where residents, businesses and stakeholders can hear more about the journey to reopening Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) and the wider vision for South Yorkshire Airport City. The event, titled ‘Cleared for Take-Off: A Q&A on the Future of DSA’, will be held on Friday 26th September between 5 and 7pm at the Eco-Power Stadium in Doncaster. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear directly from South Yorkshire’s Mayor and about the

progress made so far, the challenges ahead, and how the reopening of DSA fits into South Yorkshire’s broader ambitions for economic growth, connectivity, and sustainability.

The event will be chaired by Dan Fell, Chief Executive of Doncaster Chamber of Commerce.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said:

“Reopening Doncaster Sheffield Airport isn’t just about restoring flights - it’s about unlocking opportunity.

DSA is a vital part of our plan to grow South Yorkshire’s economy, improve our connectivity, and build

a region where people can stay near, and go far.

“The Q&A is a chance for people to hear directly about the journey so far, the challenges ahead, and how we’re working to deliver an airport that works for our communities and our region.”

Mayor Coppard and Council Leaders took the historic decision to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport, approving a £160m (£159.52m) funding package that will see commercial flights return to the region, earlier this month. The decision was made at a meeting of the

the way for the airport’s reopening.

You can find out more information and register for a free ticket for the Q&A event on the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority Eventbrite page.

HAPPY MONDAYS TO VISIT SHEFFIELD ON ANNIVERSARY TOUR

ahead of the 35th anniversary of their classic album ‘Pills ‘n’ Thrills And Bellyaches’, the Happy Mondays have confirmed a 22date tour calling in at the Octagon on the 22nd of March.

Happy Mondays

frontman Shaun Ryder, Bez (freaky dancing and percussion), Mark Day (guitar), Gary Whelan (drums), Dan Broad (MD/guitar/keys) and Firouzeh Berry (backing vocals) will perform the album’s highlights, including the massive hit singles, ‘Step On’, ‘Kinky

Afro’ and ‘Loose Fit’, in addition to other hits and fan favourites, such as ‘24 Hour Party People’, ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Judge Fudge’ and ‘W.F.L.’.

Joining the tour as very special guests are The Farm and Northside, who were both on the bill for the Happy Mondays’ legendary 1991 concert at Elland Road in Leeds. Tickets are on sale now, available from www. alttickets.com and www. happymondaysofficial. co.uk.

Shaun Ryder said, “I’m really looking forward to getting back on tour with

the Mondays in 2026, especially with our old mates The Farm who are touring with us.”

Bez added, “Really excited to be going back on tour again in the UK next year! I love being on the road with the Mondays, there is no better feeling than playing to the fans of live music. I’ll see you all next year.”

Happy Mondays became the pioneers of the Madchester sound after signing to Tony Wilson’s Factory Records in the late ‘80s, blending their love of funk, rock,

psychedelia and house with the sounds of the UK’s emerging rave scene. The band became icons of Britain’s biggest cultural phenomenon for a generation when they crossed over into the mainstream with ‘Pills ‘n’ Thrills And Bellyaches’, which reached #4 in the UK Albums Chart following its release on 27th November 1990. It remained on the albums chart until the end of May 1991, establishing itself as one of the decade’s defining albums. The Happy Mondays’

reputation as one of Britain’s most influential and loved bands was recognised in 2016 when they won the Ivor Novello Inspiration Award. Very special guests The Farm made their breakthrough in 1990, with the first of their nine Top 40 singles being the huge hits ‘Groovy Train’ (#6) and the evergreen ‘All Together Now’ (#4), both of which featured on debut album ‘Spartacus’, which topped the Official UK Albums Chart following its release in March 1991.

The Farm’s lead singer

Peter Hooton said, “We are absolutely delighted to be joining the Happy Mondays as special guests on their forthcoming tour. We go back a long way, having first met them at one of our gigs at the Boardwalk Manchester in 1986, when their style and attitude struck a chord. We also played with them at the legendary Elland Road gig in 1991 and toured with them in 2005, so we can’t wait for these gigs. It will be like a meeting of the tribes once again!”

hilsborough activity hub

A landmark development for community sport, health and recreation in Sheffield has been officially unveiled, as the local community came together to celebrate the official opening of the new Hillsborough Park Activity Hub.

Councillor Richard Williams cut the ribbon at the new Hillsborough Park facility to mark the culmination of the facility’s official opening to the public. This followed an open day on Sunday the 14th with activities for local residents, schools groups and partners, giving them a chance to try out everything the site has to offer.

The upgraded facilities include:

• Two covered padel courts

• Three dedicated Macadam tennis courts with energy efficient LED floodlighting and a multiuse games area including a fourth tennis court

• A community café and indoor activity space

• A mini nine-hole golf course

This pioneering site is operated by social enterprise, Courtside Hubs CIC and is entirely run on a community pay-and-play basis, with no membership fees, ensuring accessibility for all. The addition of floodlighting allows for extended hours of play, supporting increased participation across all age groups and abilities. Courtside at Hillsborough is committed to delivering inclusive and engaging programming, including coaching for both padel and tennis, tailored to all skill levels. The site also serves as a vibrant community hub, with strong links to local schools and social groups, anchored by the welcoming café space. The project has been made possible thanks to funding from the LTA Tennis Foundation, Sheffield City Council, Courtside, Sport England,

and the UK Government’s Community Ownership Fund.

Cllr Curtis Crossthorn said: “It is fantastic news that the new activity hub at Hillsborough is now open to the public. This new facility brings together sport, leisure and community in one of Sheffield’s most cherished green spaces. From padel courts and mini golf to a welcoming café and free-to-use games area, the hub offers something for everyone. It’s a brilliant example of how we’re bringing investment in to help deliver inclusive, high-quality spaces that support wellbeing and bring people together. I’d like to thank everyone involved in making this vision a reality, and I look forward to seeing the community enjoy it for years to come.”

Tom Gibbons of the LTA commented: “Thanks to funding from LTA Tennis Foundation and partners, Hillsborough Park now offers some of the most innovative public facilities in the country. This development is a brilliant step forward in opening up the game to new audiences and reflects the LTA’s commitment to working with partners who share our vision of tennis opened up. It’s a powerful example of how investment in community infrastructure can create lasting impact.”

And Jeff Hunter of Courtside Hubs remarked: “We are proud to have partnered with Sheffield City Council, Sport England, the LTA and the LTA Tennis Foundation to deliver this local facility which we believe will bring people together and help them be active. We’re excited that this new social infrastructure will provide people of all backgrounds and generations the opportunity for rest, recreation and refreshment and achieve more social impact in Hillsborough and across Sheffield.”

st john “save a life” campaign

Our Save a Life September campaign is back again in 2025 and this year we’re aiming to teach at least 300,000 people vital lifesaving skills through public demos, online videos and first aid advice like this column.

People would do many different things to help and show appreciation for their loved ones, neighbours and friends - such as sitting through their child’s favourite show for the 15th time, or sharing a last piece of chocolate - so why not set aside half an hour to learn how to help them when they might most need it? What can you do if called upon to help in an emergency to ensure the best chance of the person surviving?

St John Ambulance advocates that everyone should know the skills vital to try to save a life. Let’s go through each of these in turn so you too can have awareness of what to do and know where you can get more information and help.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using a defibrillator If someone suffers a cardiac arrest, they will not be breathing normally and their heart stops. With no help, they are unlikely to survive, but by alerting the emergency services and starting CPR we can increase their chances. If someone collapses, and is not breathing normally, call 999 and then start chest compressions.

Kneel beside them, placing your hands one on top of the other in the centre of their chest, and with your shoulders directly over their body push down hard and fast, letting your hands come up fully between compressions. If trained, give two rescue breaths after every 30 compressions. The call handler will tell you what to do and tell anyone with you to fetch a nearby available defibrillator. Once the defibrillator arrives, turn it on and follow the instructions making sure chest compressions continue.

Bleeding and catastrophic haemorrhage

The priority is to stop the bleeding. Make sure the area is safe for you, and if you have them, put on first aid gloves.

Cover and raise the wound with a clean non-

fluffy cloth, or a sterile dressing and apply direct pressure to the wound. If there is an object in the wound, don’t remove it but apply pressure each side of the object to push the edges together. Call the emergency services for advice while maintaining pressure. The loss of blood may cause the person to develop shock, so, if possible, lie them down, raising and supporting their legs, and loosen tight clothing. A cover over them will help. If the bleeding is not controlled and comes through the dressing, remove it, and reapply pressure using a new pad. If the injury is very severe, the call handler may advise on how to improvise a tourniquet.

Choking

Choking means the airway is partly or completely blocked, often by food. Ask if they are choking, and advise them to try to cough, but if they can’t, and are unable to speak and are very distressed, you will have to help them. Give the person up to five sharp back blows, between the shoulder blades. You need to support them to lean forwards while you give these and check after each blow to see if anything has come out. If five back blows don’t work, give up to five abdominal thrusts. To do these, stand behind them, put your arms around their waist putting a clenched fist midway between the belly button and the bottom of their chest. Grasp this hand with your other hand and pull inwards and upwards. Check between each thrust to see if it has worked.

Alternate back blows and abdominal thrusts calling 999 if the blockage does not clear. Be aware they may become unresponsive and need CPR.

We hope that you will never need to use these skills, but it is much better to be prepared. For more information on any of the topics discussed here, or to find online and face to face training opportunities, visit sja.org.uk/save-alife-september/.

skydive for support dogs

Nurturing trainee assistance dogs is no mean feat – that’s why Jess Huckstepp has gone one step further and is planning to jump out of a plane.

The 29-year-old is taking part in the Sheffieldbased Support Dogs charity’s first-ever mass skydive day.

Jess, and her husband Tom, a 29-year-old primary school teacher, hold the charity close to their hearts as they have been volunteer doggy foster carers for Support Dogs’ wonderdogs for around three years.

The Beachief couple have looked after Millie, Jack and Rowley long-term, as well as Barnby, Derek, Skye and Nix short-term.

Jack is currently partnered with an autistic eight-year-old girl from Wickersley, Rotherham, and Rowley, whose full name is Rowlings, will be leaving the Huckstepps on September 8 to experience living in another foster family environment.

Barnby graduated earlier this year as an epilepsy seizure alert dog.

Jess added: “I’ve never ever done a skydive before. I’ve always wanted a good reason to do it. I’m absolutely terrified, but the charity means a lot to us and it seemed like the perfect opportunity. I’m really excited to support the charity in such a fun way.”

Jess has raised more than £1,000 in sponsorship so far.

Clients and relatives whose lives have been changed by the awe-

inspiring dogs trained and provided by Support Dogs, which provides specialist assistance dogs to help autistic children, as well as people with epilepsy or physical disability, are also amongst those tackling the skydive.

Also taking to the skies on the day is Annabel Love, a client services coordinator with Support Dogs.

Annabel, who has raised around £370 in sponsorship so far, took part in Support Dogs’s charity abseil on the Monsal Trail in May, raising over £200, and has previously done paragliding in Tenerife while volunteering abroad.

She said: “I’m very excited. You can see the huge difference the dogs make in everyone’s lives across all programmes.

“It’s lovely to see the change dogs make to kids’ lives. During home placements, you can see a massive change in the child’s behaviour and how the family dynamic has improved. It’s heartwarming to see first-hand.”

Scream Time arrives at Wentworth Woodhouse

Enter at your own risk! A new spine-tingling experience, Scream Time is coming to Wentworth Woodhouse, one of the grandest stately homes in the country, this Halloween. With nods to thehaunted history of the Georgian house, a curse has taken hold and death is the guest of honour.

Zombies, ghosts, and ghouls brush a little too close for comfort on this spooktacular Halloween trail featuring terrifying experiences and scare actors who remain in character.

Visitors will be greeted by a Georgian-era police officer who will brief them that a curse has taken hold of Wentworth Woodhouse and the terrifying secrets are buried deep within its walls.

As visitors go from room to room, they will encounter horrifying scenes. In the reception room, library, haunted bathroom, drawing room, ballroom and bedroom. You can run but you cannot hide.

The event takes inspiration from the history of Wentworth Woodhouse and those who once lived there.

Neil Power, Events Delivery Officer at Wentworth Woodhouse has conducted paranormal events, he says: “I was a total sceptic before I came here. I am often here late at night and early in the morning and things have happened. I believe I heard someone tell me to get out when I was in the Earl of Strafford’s bedroom one night.

“I can’t explain it, the house was empty. We’ve heard doors slamming, chairs moving and footsteps.”

Records show that sightings of ghosts have been reported at the House since the 1800s, with maids spotting what they thought was the ghost of the Earl of Strafford. Outside, the trail continues and visitors are dared to walk along Arachnophobia Alley to the murderous axeman and zombie groundsman. They will be sure to give you a fright. Watch out as the graves have been disturbed and you don’t know what is lurking there.

Visitors will be able to calm their nerves in the Scare Village with hot chocolate, marshmallows, and delicious themed street food. Devilish drinks will be available at the Spookeasy Baralongside Halloween decorations and fire acts. There will also be a headless man and guillotine – perfect for those Halloween photo opportunities.

Once refreshed you can attempt the final test – getting out

alive. The gatekeeper of souls may deny you exit. Will you make it?

The event is being brought to you by the team who deliver the popular Great British Food Festival and Luminate, light trails. They are working with Events Creative Director Lee Rath to create the experience.

Janine Maycock events organiser says: “The Scream Time trail is strictly for those aged 15 and over. It is not for the faint of heart. Spooky Time is at an earlier time slot for our younger visitors. You can become a police officer and solve the crimes room by room with an interactive game looking for clues. There will still be zombies and skeletons but it’s not as terrifying.

“Wentworth Woodhouse is the perfect location for Scream Time and Spooky Time. It has this incredible history, a huge house, and of course the resident ghosts. We can’t wait to give visitors the tremors.”

Scream Time and Spooky Time at Wentworth Woodhouse runs from October 20th to November 2nd.

Chris Wilder was frank in his assessment after his third spell in charge of the Blades began with defeat at the hands of Charlton Athletic.

Substitute Issac Oloafe won it late in the day for the Addicks and speaking in the aftermath, the boss offered no excuses.

He remarked: “The players are desperate

to do well, those that have come to the club, haven’t come to be bottom of the division, but we are bottom of the division at the moment.

“The players I had last season and the ones that have come in, it feels damaging what has happened over the previous five games, so maybe I was too much on the optimistic side to

think that we’ll be okay, but there has been a good vibe around the place since coming back in.”

“The biggest thing is producing it on a Saturday when the pressure is on and we looked anxious at times and rushed, the word chaotic is a word I’d use about the second half performance, there was no sign of dominance,

and we made some really poor decisions.

“I never felt in real danger, but it is about getting the balance right because we did look fragile and damaged, a result could change that attitude, but we have to get over the position we are in and man up really, accepting it is a pressure situation, and it is rightly so a demanding crowd.

mCCANN WANTED mORE FROm ‘SAFE’ ROVERS IN WImBLEDON LOSS

Grant McCann felt Rovers were far too safe in their play as the fell to defeat against AFC Wimbledon.

McCann was frustrated by the manner of the goals conceded as Rovers let their lead, courtesy of Owen Bailey’s header, slip at the Eco-Power Stadium.

But he was also disappointed by the tame showing in the first half during which Rovers struggled to find their usual tempo in possession.

Wednesday registered their first win of the 2025/26 Championship campaign on Saturday, on a day where they entire team excelled at Fratton Park.

Barry Bannan and George Brown scored the allimportant goals against Portsmouth to give the Owls a maiden league win of the season.

With a huge sense of pride at full time, manager Henrik Pedersen had nothing but praise for how his team

prepared, performed and prevailed.

“First of all I am very, very proud of the boys,” Pedersen said. “They have trained so hard, had so many knocks but they keep getting up again and again and again.

“This togetherness today and discipline for the gameplan, wow, there was so much courage in the performance.

“There was so much intensity and I have so much respect for them all.”

Bannan opened the scoring with a wonderfully taken free kick and on the skipper, the manager continued:

“I think he was a great captain today, one thing is what he does through his actions, how he plays, winning balls but the other thing is how he supports his players.

“He was great but today, our best player was the team. “How they worked together and the discipline for the gameplan, we played a

little more direct than we had in the other games but the clarity today was amazing for the boys.

“We spoke about three phases in the game; one to get a good beginning because we have been sloppy in other games, we spoke about staying in the game and then how often we can break the defending line of the opponent.

“You can do a lot if you do it with heart and the boys played with heart today. They stayed

together, but you also need a little bit of luck to change the result and we were lucky with the muscle injury in the second goal.

“We had a fantastic keeper today and sometimes you need all these things to turn it around.

“When you search hard for it, sometimes that luck will come for you and the boys have searched hard for it. They have tried everything and today is a well-deserved win.

“When you lose a game, you always need a new game and a new energy to go again.

“It will be exactly the same after today, we have won the game but now we go back to zero and put all our focus in again. What do you need to win a game in the Championship? You need to go all out, with heart and do all what you can – that’s what the boys did today, they really deserved it.

“Wimbledon are a difficult team to play against,” McCann said. “We knew we had to be patient but I thought we were too patient in the first half.

“We didn’t take enough risks. We didn’t play off our back foot enough, didn’t create any sort of real issues for them at all in the first half.

“It’s difficult to play against that sort of system unless you take risks and we just didn’t take enough risks.

“We didn’t ask the players to go out there and pass backwards and be safe. We asked them to take risks. The whole week was based around taking risks, beating people and committing people. We didn’t have enough of that.

“When we scored, I thought we were going to kick on. We didn’t and I think conceding the first goal hit us a wee bit, which is frustrating.”

The Rovers boss also pointed to a catalogue of mistakes for Wimbledon’s two goals which saw Rovers surrender the lead all too easily.

He said: “I said to the players that if you don’t do the basics of what we’re trying to do then you’ll get punished. That’s what happened.

“We’ve made mistakes for the goals and it’s as simple as that. It’s really down ton to what we’ve done and not what they’ve done and I’m really disappointed with it.

“The reality is if you don’t do the job you’re asked to do then you’ll get punished in this division.”
