ROTHERHAM GEARS UP FOR WEEKEND OF FUN
Rotherham is gearing up for a weekend of celebration, creativity and family fun as the beloved Rotherham Show returns to Clifton Park for two action-packed days.
The region’s biggest free cultural festival will make a welcome return to Clifton Park on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 September.
The much-anticipated event, expected to attract thousands of show goers from across the region, will once again transform the park into a vibrant hub of entertainment, with something for all ages to enjoy.
From live music and outdoor theatre to circus acts, sports, comedy and fairground rides, the Rotherham Show promises a weekend to remember.
Among the many
highlights are the return of crowd favourites such as the Strongmen competitions, Companion Dog Show, Vintage Vehicle Display, and a host of roaming performers throughout the park.
The Children’s Capital of Culture Area will showcase the incredible talents of Rotherham’s young people, while the Great Bullzini, the UK’s leading high-wire walker, will wow crowds as he takes to the skies above Clifton Park.
The Made in Rotherham Horticultural show makes a welcome return, as does the laugh out loud chuckle tent, featuring comedy performers from across the UK. There’ll even be a hint of nostalgia with the chance to play retro video games from the national video game museum.
And, in a show first, board game fans can take part in Rotherham’s biggest ever game of snakes and ladders thanks to a huge land art commission by Yorkshire artist James Brunt. A wide range of stalls, street food, and local traders will also be on hand, offering everything from handmade crafts to tasty treats.
Organisers say the show is more than just an event - it’s a celebration of the community spirit that makes Rotherham special.
Cllr Lynda Marshall, Cabinet Member for Street Scene and Green Spaces, said: “The Rotherham Show is a true celebration of everything that makes our borough so special - its creativity, diversity, and incredible community spirit.
“With something for all ages, from live music and theatre to fun workshops and fantastic food, it’s the perfect way to spend the weekend with family and friends. I’d encourage everyone to come along, soak up the atmosphere, and be part of this amazing free event - you won’t want to miss it!”
Rotherham Show is free to attend and welcomes visitors from across the borough and beyond.
Gates open at 11am on both days, remaining open until 5pm.

FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE ROLL IN TO SHEFFIELD
This week, Florence Welch - also known as Florence + The Machine - announced her UK & EU tour to celebrate the release of her sixth studio album Everybody Scream this October.
The tour will be calling at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield on Valentines Day next year. Florence will be joined by Paris Paloma who will be opening the shows across the eighteen dates for the Everybody Scream tour.
The album’s title track was released last week with an accompanying
video directed by Autumn de Wilde. Everybody Scream was written and produced by Florence Welch over the past two years with a close-knit circle of collaborators including Mark Bowen of IDLES, who appears in the video for the single, Aaron Dessner and Mitski. After needing lifesaving surgery on the Dance Fever Tour, Florence’s recovery took her down the path of spiritual mysticism, witchcraft and folk horror as she felt the limits of her body
and explored what it means to be “healed”.
The album treads through womanhood, partnership, aging and dying; exposing the murky in the mundane.
Across five albums2009’s Lungs, 2011’s Ceremonials, 2015’s How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, 2018’s High As Hope and 2022’s Dance Fever - Florence has become one of the most monumental artists of a generation, with multiple US and UK #1 albums and countless awards. Known for
her earth-shattering live show and singular, iconic voice, Florence has sold out shows and headlined festivals the entire world over. She has collaborated and shared stages with icons - The Rolling Stones, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift among them - and published a book of lyrics, poetry and drawings, Useless Magic.

I gave up my seat to a blind person on the bus. That’s how I lost my job as a bus driver.
Apparently the clocks go back next month. Well I’m screwed then. I can’t remember where I got mine from.
I went to a funeral and asked the widow... “Mind if I say a word?”
“Please do.” She replied. I cleared my throat and said: “Plethora.” “Thanks, that means a lot.” She said.
I just bought 50 bottles of Tipex. Big mistake!
My wife works as a magician’s assistant. I think she’s picked up a few tricks I came home from work early and she was in the bedroom. She said, “Abracadabra!” and my mate, Dave, came out of the wardrobe, stark naked. Poor sod must have wondered what the hell was going on.
My girlfriend and I are trying this whole “long distance relationship” thing. I have to stay 100 feet away from her at all times.
Also, the police say I should stop referring to her as my girlfriend.
My grief counsellor died recently. Luckily he was so good, I really didn’t care.
Knock knock... Who’s there??? Grandad.... Oh bloody hell stop the funeral!

mayor’s keynote speech on doncaster sheffield airport
South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, has delivered a keynote speech on Doncaster Sheffield Airport to an audience of business leaders from across Doncaster and South Yorkshire. He said:
“A few weeks ago I was invited onto the ‘Save DSA podcast’ by Mark Chadwick, who you will all know, and who’s here in the audience today, the most famous man in the room. Mark’s first question was about where I was when I heard the news about DSA being put into a ‘strategic review’ by the owners, Peel, in 2022.
For the record, I was in the office, which probably wasn’t as dramatic as Mark was hoping for.
But while my story may not have been very dramatic, the impact of that announcement certainly was, right from the outset. It was immediately obvious that the decision by the owners would not go unnoticed, or unchallenged. In fact, there was huge interest: locally, nationally and internationally. And huge concern from people right across South Yorkshire, as well as further afield.
Airports, I quickly came to understand, are not just transport hubs, gateways to international travel, or simply valued for their ability to create jobs or generate wealth. Airports generate an unusual degree of attachment, local pride, and even hope.
For the people who worked there, I know DSA felt like a family.
For those who relied on the airport as a base for their own businesses, there was suddenly a scramble to imagine a new future. For those who used the airport regularly, the threat of its closure meant a new degree of uncertainty and inconvenience.
But I think the immediate response was about more than uncertainty or inconvenience.
There is something about airports that generates a sense of optimism and opportunity, something about air travel that still seems almost impossible. Despite the very real challenges of climate breakdown, and the rise and regularity of low-cost air-travel, I think, there remains something special about getting on a plane.
There was an outpouring of not just anger or
disbelief, and a very real and significant sense of loss. In hindsight, perhaps it was something closer to grief. But there was also an outpouring of genuine enthusiasm for DSA, and what it means to people across our communities and beyond.
And an almost universal demand that it be kept open. At this point, I think it’s perhaps worth listing the work that has been put in with partners to save DSA; to make real my commitment to this project.
Just days after the news about Peel’s decision I was the first – and only – person to organise public meetings to bring together our communities behind the goal of saving DSA.
• I instructed my team at the MCA to negotiate with Peel, and negotiated myself, with a view to brokering a deal to either save or sell our airport.
• For months, I chaired weekly meetings, bringing together the City of Doncaster Council and our MPs, to coordinate our response.
• I asked the government to use the Civil Contingencies Act as a mechanism to keep DSA open. I even tracked down the AviationMinister at the Tory Party Conference in Birmingham, and made our case in person.
• I authorised an offer of £7 million to Peel; an offer designed to keep DSA open for an additional 12 months past the putative closing date, in the hope we could try to negotiate a sale while the airport remained open and operational.
• I lobbied the government to designate DSA and Gateway East as part of the UK’s first Investment Zone, offering us the opportunity to use Business Rate Retention to invest in the future of the project. And since it was closed in November 2022…
• I’ve already committed £16m to the process of reopening DSA.
• I’ve brokered an additional £30 million investment from government, and personally secured the support of the Chancellor for our plans to reopen our airport. I brought the PM and the Deputy PM to Doncaster, who have both been vocal in their support too.
• I’ve established a working group with government, to explore
any and all opportunities for further investment in the wider project, from defence contracts to sustainable aviation research.
• And I’ve commissioned one of the most indepth business case assessments the MCA has ever undertaken, so we can truly understand the risks, the benefits, the opportunities inherent in reopening DSA; giving us a robust analysis of what the pathway to success looks like.
Because I have been driven by two very clear, yet potentially competing imperatives; to respond to the demand to save DSA and to exploit the huge opportunity that this project represents, to do the very thing I committed to doing when I first stood for election in 2022; to restore the pride, purpose and the prosperity of South Yorkshire.
But also, to protect the interests of taxpayers across South Yorkshire; to use the finite public money at my disposal to best meet the needs of communities across Barnsley, Rotherham, Sheffield and of course Doncaster.
I think it’s fair to say not everybody has always recognised the scale of that challenge, and perhaps we haven’t always done a good job of explaining it.
We have not always explained the relatively limited capacity we have in the MCA or in Doncaster to take on projects of this size, type and scale.
We have not always explained that the rules governing our funding mean we often have limited flexibility or scope to do things that may look straight forward from the outside, of course, and that every significant funding decision we take is subject to a huge amount of scrutiny, legal process and governance. Quite rightly.
So I want to take this opportunity to talk a little about the work we have been doing, at the MCA and alongside our partners at Doncaster Council, to work out whether we can reopen DSA and create a world leading sustainable aviation hub and advanced manufacturing hub at Gateway East. We had initially hoped that a private sector operator would take on the work of financing and reopening DSA.

amanda thanks support dogs
But we were simply not prepared to sign that deal no matter the cost. So we have taken on that challenge ourselves; City of Doncaster Council, the MCA and now with support from the government. But that material change has required us to undertake a new and deeper level of analysis, to satisfy the very significant demands of using public funding for a project of this nature and this scale.
I have made, and will make, no apology for that approach; for doing the proper due diligence when being asked to potentially spend in excess of £150 million of public money, to make real a project that has the potential to be either a huge economic driver, or a significant drain on public funds.
An unprecedented challenge requires an unprecedented approach. That is why we have commissioned one of the most comprehensive business case analyses in the history of the MCA. That work has included: risk assessments and reviews of our own assurance processes, independent analysis of aviation forecasts, including commercial passenger and freight targets, programme planning, an ongoing review of the lease arrangements with the landowners, Gateway East master-planning, that offers a greater understanding of the infrastructure and investment needed to create a world leading sustainable aviation hub as part of the South Yorkshire Airport City project, a new analysis of the cost-to-benefit ratio of the project, a climate and sustainability impact assessment, skills and employment considerations so we can make sure local people can access the opportunities we want to create, and more. And we have undertaken that work at pace.
To have gone from the closure of our airport in November 2022, to a position where we now have moved this project forward to this point, and to have almost completed investment-grade due diligence with nearly 1,000 pages of analysis, is – in my opinion – if not extraordinary, then certainly notable.”
From tackling Mount Snowdon in her wheelchair, to breaking Paralympic national records in archery, Amanda Davidson is not letting disability stop her from living life to the fullest – with a little help from her furry friends.
The 56-year-old and Fox Red labrador Chris recently qualified as a successful Support Dogs partnership. Chris has been trained by the Yorkshire-based national Support Dogs charity to help her with a range of everyday tasks, from fetching her walking stick, picking up items Amanda may drop and closing doors to dragging the laundry basket around the house and loading the washing machine. Already Chris is proving to be super-clever.
Amanda said: “Even though Chris is only three and still has a lot of maturing to do, he is so fast at learning things – in one session we taught him how to help me fold my wheelchair, and in another, how to pull my office chair across the office to my desk and he can also retrieve my wheelchair if it gets blown away. He is so eager to learn.”
Amanda is a retired Metropolitan Police officer, whose career was cut short when she was injured in the line of duty aged just 29, and later contracted auto-immune disease lupus before suffering a stroke aged just 38. She is now a case worker for the Parliamentary Health Service Ombudsman
– and Chris helps her not only negotiate her commute via Meadowhall Interchange, stabilising her wheelchair when she unloads it from her car, but also helps by pushing access buttons, for instance on lifts and trains.
He instinctively also pushes buttons for automatic doors –conserving the little energy Amanda has so she doesn’t have to manoeuvre her wheelchair before they close.
Amanda added: “Having a support dog makes it so much easier to keep your independence to work. I was driving in before, but now we go by train and we do things like everyone else does. I don’t have to think everything through, about whether it’s feasible – we just do it.”
Following her disability, Amanda had been left feeling isolated, but having her support dogs gave her confidence to get out and about. Not only that – Amanda took on a series of challenges, becoming part of Team GB’s Paralympic potential archery team, conquering Snowdon and tackling a virtual London Marathon.
Amanda has committed herself to raising muchneeded funds and awareness for Support Dogs, which trains and provides assistance dogs to help adults with a physical disability, as well as autistic children and adults with epilepsy.

FOOTBALLR UNDUP
A busy evening at Bramall Lane saw four incoming players with one outgoing. United have bolstered midfield options with the permanent addition of a young midfielder with Premier League experience.
Alex Matos has penned a three-year deal at Bramall Lane, with the Blades paying Chelsea an undisclosed fee for the services of a player who can operate in a number of positions.
“When I heard of the interest it was a nobrainer move for me,” said Alex. “I feel this is right time for me to move on and play regular football and this is the right club for me. I spoke to Alfie (Gilchrist) and he told me that it’s a good club, with good people, and I would enjoy it. Last season, the 20year-old spent the second half of the campaign back in the Championship with Oxford United, making 21 appearances for the U’s in all competitions.
The Blades have also completed the deadline day signing of Republic of Ireland international Chiedozie Ogbene.
The exciting forward player has joined on loan for the season from Ipswich Town. He was given permission to leave his international camp to complete a medical and sign for United ahead of returning to Republic of Ireland duty.
Ben Mee has put pento-paper at Bramall Lane following a period of training with the
Blades, signing a oneyear contract with the option to extend.
The veteran defender arrives with huge experience playing in the Premier League and Promotion winning Championship sides with Burnley & Brentford.
“It is good to finally be a Sheffield United player, having been around the club and group for the last two weeks,” said the defender. “The atmosphere could be better, but that’s because of results not going our way and hopefully things are going to turnaround.”
International defender Mark McGuinness completed the defensive investment by signing a four-year deal with the Blades from Luton Town.
Upon signing, McGuinness commented: “It has been a bit of a crazy window and obviously things can happen late, but Sheffield United has been a club which has been in my mind ever since I heard that there was some interest.”
Jack Robinson has departed Bramall Lane after an agreement was reached with fellow Championship club Birmingham City late on transfer deadline day.
The defender moves to St Andrew’s, leaving Bramall Lane after serving the club for over four-and-a-half years.
During his time in S2, Robinson made 162 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals.

Harry Amass says he is excited for the months ahead and getting started with Wednesday.
The Manchester United youngster secured a loan move to Hillsborough on deadline day and has spoken of his delight at getting the deal over the line.
The 18-year-old told swfc.co.uk: “I’m very excited, I can’t wait to get going and I’m just really happy that it has all happened.

I want to be exciting for the fans to watch.”
On his move to the Owls and the deciding factors in choosing Wednesday, he continued: “I just had a good feeling instantly when I spoke to the manager.
“I got the feeling that this will be the best place for me, the history of the place is massive and that’s why I chose here. I think I’ve learned a lot, the move to Manchester United was a good step, the right step for me and since then I’ve been with the first team.
“From that I have taken a lot of things, learned a lot of things and it has really developed me as a player.”
Amass made seven senior appearances last season for Manchester United, in the Premier League and Europa League.
“It’s been massive to have those opportunities and experiences,” he added.
“They are hard to come by and it’s such a good experience, so much learning comes from them and you just get better and better from playing those games.
“I want to take all of that into this next stage and that’s what I’m here to do now.
“I want to get training, get in with the lads, meet everyone and get started right away – I can’t wait to play. I want to walk out down the tunnel and get playing in front of everyone.”
