SEFFIELD RELAUNCHES LEGENDS WALK OF FAME
To celebrate some of the city’s greatest achievers, Sheffield City Council is proposing to relaunch the Sheffield Legends –the city’s walk of fame honouring individuals who have achieved national or international acclaim.
As part of the proposed refreshed approach to civic honours, the Sheffield Legends, who need to have a strong connection to the city, will once again shine a spotlight on those who have made a substantial contribution to Sheffield’s reputation and culture. Those who are awarded the honour will have a plaque with their name on installed at the top of Fargate, outside Sheffield Town Hall.
If the proposal is approved
by the Strategy and Resources Committee on Thursday 10th July, a sixweek public nomination process will launch this summer, inviting residents to put forward individuals or groups who meet the criteria for Sheffield Legend status.
The Sheffield Legends honour is awarded to individuals or groups who are or were at the top of their field, easily recognisable at a national or global level, and who have made a significant contribution to promoting Sheffield in a positive light. Their achievements should be widely acknowledged and verifiable through public acclaim.
This award is one of three key civic honours in Sheffield:
• Honorary Freedom of the City – The highest honour the city can bestow. There is only one nomination a year, made by the Lord Mayor after seeking advice from the Civic Awards Panel. The nomination is considered at a special meeting of Full Council, with the decision requiring a twothirds majority vote to be granted.
• Lord Mayor Awards –Annual awards across six categories recognising outstanding contributions by individuals or organisations that live, work or are based in Sheffield. These awards celebrate excellence in community service, sport, and environmental impact.
• Sheffield Legends – A lasting tribute in the form
of a plaque in the city centre, recognising those whose achievements have brought pride and recognition to Sheffield on a national or international stage.
The proposed relaunch aims to build on the success of the 2025 Lord Mayor Awards, which received over 500 nominations from across the city. The Sheffield Legends campaign would continue this momentum by engaging communities and celebrating the city’s diverse talent.
“Sheffield is a city of makers, creators and hard workers and we are bursting with talent.
The Sheffield Legends relaunch is about celebrating success and honouring the great achievements from

people in our city.
“Whether in sport, the arts, industry, or public service, this is about recognising those people who inspire us and the world. We want to hear from the public about which legends should be recognised and join our walk of fame.”
- Cllr Tom Hunt, Leader of Sheffield City Council
If the suggested approach is approved on July 10th, the new plaques will be unveiled in a public ceremony later this year, including installations for two previous recipients – Danny Willett and Joe Root - whose plaques have yet to be laid.

News, Information and Advice
international paramedic daY
International Paramedics Day on 8 July is a great opportunity for Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) to pause and reflect on the extraordinary contribution of its paramedics and frontline responders. This year’s theme ‘unity and community’ perfectly encapsulates the collaborative spirit of YAS’s 2,165 paramedics who play a pivotal role in the health and wellbeing of communities and work alongside crew members and colleagues to achieve real impact and deliver excellent patient-centred care. They were involved in responding to around 900,000 emergency incidents across Yorkshire in 2024-25.
Paramedics are often the first healthcare professional many people encounter in their most vulnerable moments. It’s a role that not only demands exceptional clinical skill and rapid decision-making but also compassion, resilience and adaptability.
Dave Green, Chief Paramedic at Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said: “Paramedics are highly skilled autonomous clinicians who provide essential care in challenging and often unpredictable circumstances. Their role is far-reaching, from quickly evaluating complex situations, identifying lifethreatening conditions and formulating immediate treatment plans to coordinating with other emergency services at complex incidents. In recent years, the paramedic role has evolved significantly, with clinicians increasingly providing ‘see and treat’ and ‘hear and treat’ care, preventing unnecessary hospital admissions and referring patients to alternative and more appropriate community services. This expanded scope highlights their expertise and their crucial role in managing the wider demands of the NHS.”
The landscape of pre-hospital care is constantly evolving, driven by innovation and a commitment to improving patient outcomes. Yorkshire Ambulance Service paramedics are at the forefront of these advancements which include:
• Telemedicine integration - the ability to consult with doctors
and other clinicians in real-time, providing enhanced guidance and support for complex cases. One example is the roll-out of stroke video triage at Hull Royal Infirmary which connects ambulance crews with specialist stroke clinicians by video call, allowing the hospital assessment to take place earlier in the patient journey.
• Enhanced trauma care new equipment and protocols for managing severe injuries, improving chances of survival and recovery. YAS now has 45 Specialist Paramedics in Critical Care who have undergone advanced training to manage and treat patients in lifethreatening emergencies. YAS has also introduced a Medical Emergency Response Incident Team (MERIT), made up of a Pre-Hospital Consultant and Specialist Paramedic in Critical Care, to better support major incidents and to provide enhanced clinical care to patients on a more routine basis.
• Development of alternative care pathways - this ensures patients receive the right care at the earliest point in their healthcare journey. One example is linking with mental health crisis teams, hospital-based mental health units and local safe spaces across the region to connect mental health patients with the right team as soon as possible after their contact with 999, avoiding unnecessary ambulance dispatch and attendance at an emergency department where this isn’t clinically appropriate for the person’s needs.
• Electronic patient records - streamlining documentation and ensuring seamless information transfer between ambulance clinicians and hospital teams which improves continuity of care International Paramedics Day takes place every year on July 8 because this marks the anniversary of the birth of Dominique Jean Larrey, the French military doctor who became Napoleon Bonaparte’s chief surgeon of the Grand Armee and the man often referred to as the ‘father of modern-day ambulance services.’

sY maYor gives commitment to active travel plan
South Yorkshire’s
Mayor Oliver Coppard has signed up to an ambitious pledge by England’s Mayors to create a new national walking, wheeling and cycling network that will help millions more people make happier, healthier and betterconnected journeys. The commitment would deliver new high-quality walking, wheeling and cycling routes to schools, the shops and workplaces across the region, giving communities more choice about how they travel.
Work that will be delivered in South Yorkshire includes:
• A new South Yorkshire walking, wheeling and cycling strategy to be published in September setting out Mayor Oliver Coppard’s vision to create safer, healthier neighbourhoods for children and more routes to opportunities A comprehensive programme for schools, building upon Mayor Oliver Coppard’s Walk and Wheel Challenge, which saw over 144 primary schools in South Yorkshire moving more and differently on the school run during Walk to School Week (19 - 23 May 2025).
• Completion of our existing £160m programme of projects to help people choose to walk, wheel and cycle more including better crossings, better pavements, School Streets, cycle paths, walking and cycling community groups and e-bike loans.
Joining a coalition of eleven of England’s Combined Authority Mayors, Mayor Coppard attended a summit in York alongside West Yorkshire’s Tracy Brabin, York and North Yorkshire’s David Skaith, the North East’s Kim McGuinness, the West Midlands’ Richard Parker and the East Midlands’ Claire Ward. Mayor Coppard met with National Active Travel Commissioner, Chris Boardman, and the UK’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Sir Chris Whitty to kickstart the plans.
Greater Manchester’s Mayor Andy Burnham, Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotherham, Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen and Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Mayor Paul Bristow have also signed the pledge published today. Mayor of London
Sadiq Khan has also added his signature in support.
Oliver Coppard, said: “I want South Yorkshire to be the healthiest region in the country. That’s why I’m putting neighbourhoods and schools at the heart of our plans, to make our region the best place for children to walk, wheel and cycle. To give every child the best start in life. Our shared commitment as Mayors, that we’ve discussed with government, strengthens our ability to deliver the safer neighbourhoods, healthier journeys, and more routes to opportunities we need –to make South Yorkshire a wealthier, happier, healthier, and better connected place for everyone.” Collectively, Mayors have committed to delivering a national network of 3,500 miles of safe routes connecting housing to schools, providing routes to opportunities, and targeting neighbourhoods where health and air quality are poorest, helping to reduce stark health inequalities. It aims to help residents in South Yorkshire and across England meet recommended activity levels, reducing risks of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and depression while supporting the Government’s Plan for Change by easing pressure on the NHS and boosting growth.
Chris Boardman, said: “Our regional leaders have today marked the start of an exciting chapter, by pledging to give people across the country more transport choice. We know that more walking, wheeling and cycling will improve our countries mental and physical health, but it will do much more; it’s the foundation for thriving integrated public transport networks, it increases access to work, boosting local economic growth and it will give millions of children more independence. People will only consider traveling actively if it is easy and safe. That’s what the Mayors have today pledged to do and that’s why Government is backing them. It’s going to have a hugely positive impact on millions of people’s daily lives.”
The Local Transport South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, Ed Clancy, added: “Walking, wheeling, and cycling
bring about countless benefits but safer streets, better connections to bus, tram and train, and more routes to opportunities are essential to making everyday journeys easier, healthier, and happier. Everyone deserves the freedom to choose how they get around - whether it’s walking, scooting, or cycling to school, the shops, the park, or work. For children especially, moving more and in different ways helps build lifelong healthy habits. That’s why the school run is at the heart of our plans for South Yorkshire.”
As part of the agreement the Mayors have committed to:
1. Work with the Department for Transport, Active Travel England and local authorities to create a country-wide national walking, wheeling and cycling network, comprising of local networks that are safe and easy to use. This will give their regions’ 20 million residents access to high quality, safe routes in their communities.
2. Transform the school run by delivering highquality, safer routes in neighbourhoods nationwide.
3. Boost regional integrated transport networks by giving people easy walking, wheeling and cycling access to buses, trams and trains which will link to new housing and support local economic growth.
The initiative comes as recent research shows one in six early deaths could be prevented with regular moderate exercise. Meanwhile, a study from 2023/24 found that, in England, 35.8% of year 6 children were overweight or living with obesity, with 22.1% living with obesity. The first wave of improving active travel routes to schools will include the delivery of proven and popular schemes, including school streets, traffic calming measures, new crossings and wellmaintained pavements. Regional mayors will lead local implementation, selecting interventions that best fit their communities’ needs and developing programmes to encourage active travel, such as walking and cycling buses for children. The initiative aligns with the government’s Plan for Change, focusing on prevention rather than cure by building health and wellbeing into everyday activities. The programme will be delivered primarily using existing transport resources, with additional targeted investment from Active Travel England, improving efficiency by consolidating separate funding streams into a mission-focused approach.
nhs urges waste reduction
The NHS in South Yorkshire is urging people to only order the medicines they need as part of a region-wide campaign to tackle medicines waste.
Each year, about £18 million worth of medicines are wasted across South Yorkshire, meaning NHS resources are not being used where they are most vitally needed.
To help address this issue, the NHS is raising awareness of the financial and environmental impacts of avoidable medicines waste and encouraging patients to ‘only order what they need’.
Patients are being encouraged to check their medicines supplies before placing an order to ensure they only ‘order what they need’.
How you can help
• Only order what you need - before getting more, check what medicine you already have.
• Return any extras – when picking up your medicine at the pharmacy, only take what you need. If you return something before leaving, it can likely be used again.
• Stick to your routine – order your medicine

• Save NHS resources
David Smith, Chief Pharmacist highlights the importance of using medicine responsibly. He said: “We are asking everyone to take simple steps to check their cupboards and see what medicines they need before ordering their prescriptions.”
“We want people to have the right medicines and the right care while also reducing avoidable waste. Only ordering the medicines you need also helps to keep people safe.
“Having too much medicine at home can be confusing, especially if your prescription changes.
“If you already have enough, there’s no need to order more - you can always ask for it later when you do need it. If you have any concerns about your medicines, you can always speak to your pharmacist or GP practice team for advice.
“By making small changes, we can all make a big difference.”
